An Industrial Gallery Wedding With Gorgeous Art Deco Vibes

‘Tis the season for jewel tones and this San Francisco celebration will have you welcoming vibrant hues with open arms. Crafted with a industrial meets art deco vibe at the hands of A Savvy Event and Shotgun Floral Studio, this day brings beauty and a whole bunch of personality to the Terra Gallery. From moroccan rugs lining the aisle to bridesmaids dazzling in sparkling gowns, get lost in the beauty of Sylvie Gil’s photographs.

From the Photographer… Vi & Sean’s San Francisco wedding was truly an art deco masterpiece. The couple decided to get married in the city where they met and live, incorporating lots of personal touches into the design and flow of their special day. This included playing “The Final Countdown” by Europe at the beginning of the ceremony (it was playing when they went to pick up their marriage licenses) and lining the aisle with Moroccan rugs (the two got engaged while in Morocco on holiday). The ceremony was held at the Terra Gallery, a trendy art gallery in the SOMA neighborhood of San Francisco. Gold geometric accents, including a custom monogrammed, laser-cut cake topper carried the art deco theme throughout the night. Traces of a modernized 1920s aesthetic were present in the bridesmaids gown, Vi’s birdcage veil, reception bar, and the metallic lettering and graphics on their invitation suite, menus, and welcome sign. Rose gold utensils and jewel-toned glassware and florals on reclaimed rustic, dark wood tables made for a bright and inviting reception.

When Rain on Your Wedding Day Is Actually a Blessing

This Bride had two dreams for her wedding: to hold the ceremony in the backyard of her childhood home and to wear her mother’s wedding dress. And while the carefully preserved gown fit her like a glove, rain threatened the other dream. At the last second, the weather looked like it would clear, so the sweet Bride decided to delay the ceremony – which ended up being her best decision! She quietly waited in her parent’s bedroom for the sun to reappear, and for the first time in months, she was able to sit and soak in all that was happening that day. Ashley Baber Weddings and Legendary Events are the duo who pulled off this outdoor wedding just minutes after the rain, and we’ve got the pretty photos by Virgil Bunao Photography to share with you here.

Backyard

From the Bride… William and I had our wedding in my parents’ backyard, which had always been a dream of mine growing up. It is a magical backyard: eight acres of beautiful valley filled with green grass, big trees, fragrant honeysuckle, merry creeks, and dragonfly ponds. So the morning of my wedding day, I woke up in my childhood bedroom. It felt right. The walls that had seen so much of my life story so far were now sending me off into a new chapter.

Two lovely young women from Aura Hair & Makeup arrived bright and early to do up the ladies. William and I decided just to have our siblings in our bridal party, so my future mother-in-law, Rose, my future sister-in-law Jordan, my mother, and I gathered in the kitchen for beautification. I also asked my dearest friend, Meghan, who has been my surrogate sister since middle school, to come and hang out with us. She brought her brand new baby girl, Elizabeth, with her, and everyone took turns cooing over the baby when they weren’t in one of the hot seats. There were some very happy moments of exchanging gifts, working on last-minute homemade crafts with my little brother, Tanner, hugging beloved grandparents as they arrived, and watching the final preparations under the tent outside. At some point, the boys arrived, and I hid on the kitchen floor behind the island while they headed down to the basement for their own preparations. Don’t worry; it is a very sexy basement, with a pool table and ping pong table to keep them occupied. But I loved the idea of William and I getting ready for our big day in the same house. Once it came time to change, I dressed in my parents’ master bedroom while William donned his suit directly below in my dad’s office. The nearness was such a fun tease.

In addition to getting married in my parents’ backyard, my second childhood wedding dream was wearing my mother’s dress. I grew up looking at pictures of my mom in her bridal gown and thinking she was (and is) the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Well – would you believe it? – that dream came true as well. We took the dress out of the sealed box, where it had been residing under my parents’ bed for over 30 years, and it fit perfectly. Perfectly! All we did was add an inch or so of lace to the hem because I am taller than my sweet mama. And I wore flats, which I would have done anyway because of the whole backyard wedding thing. (And the I-hate-heels thing.) So it was a very special moment when my mom helped me into the same dress that she had worn on the day she married my father. I also wore a pearl necklace from my paternal grandfather who passed away in 2013, a sapphire ring from my maternal great-grandmother, and a pearl bracelet that William sent up to me from the basement that very day. I felt quite literally wrapped up in love and family. Also, I will add this nifty suggestion from my mom for any Brides or Grooms reading: Find a perfume or cologne that you love but which you wouldn’t wear every day. Only wear it the week of the wedding and on your honeymoon. Then, if you ever wear it again in the future for an anniversary or special occasion, that scent will immediately take you back, since your sense of smell is the one most closely tied to memory! I chose Jo Malone’s Peony and Blush Suede, and that scent now magically conjures some of my happiest memories.

Once we were all dressed, it came time for the father-daughter first look. We had a tradition in my family that my little brother and I always sat and waited at the top of the stairs on Christmas morning until my parents gave us official permission to come down. At various intervals, we called out, “Is it okay to come down yet?” until they replied “Alright!” with camcorder in-hand. It seemed fitting to sneak upstairs in all my bridal glory and call out, “Is it okay to come down, Daddy?” He followed tradition and replied, in a chipper voice, “Alright!” I descended that stairwell and felt so much love and appreciation for my family waiting below that I thought I would burst. My paternal grandfather, who is normally a tough teddy bear, probably lost it the most. I was doubly glad to be wearing my mother’s dress, knowing how much it meant to the man who bought it the first time around.

The weather predicted rain, and the sky sure looked ominous, so I resigned myself to the “Rain Plan” and quickly moved on. After months of worrying about the weather, it suddenly wasn’t important now that I was hours away from marrying William. That was all I cared about. I just wanted to get married. Pictures were a bit of an improvisation because the rain started coming down and coming down sideways. But Virgil Bunao and his photography team worked wonders. I am forever grateful to have had Virgil by my side throughout the day. It was imperative to me that I feel comfortable, relaxed, and myself with our chosen photographer, because in some ways, that is the person you see the most on your wedding day. When I met Virgil, I immediately fell in love with him. And when he journeyed to New York to shoot our engagement photos, William did, too. Virgil filled our day with laughter, joy, fun, and calm, and he let us be one hundred percent us, one hundred percent Hanley-and-William. And he took some gorgeous, unparalleled photos while he was at it.

Once guests began arriving, I went back into my parents’ bedroom to hide. Originally, the guests were supposed to head straight down to the ceremony site – a bridal path lined with enormous oak trees that formed a natural cathedral– but because of the rain, they all ended up in our living room and kitchen. I could hear the chatter grow and swell as more and more people arrived. Then my dad came in and said something unexpected and a little miraculous: “Hanley, I think this rain will pass if we delay. Do you want to get married down on the path if possible?” I hesitated for just a second and then gave him a fervent yes. So we delayed! And I entered into one of my favorite memories of the day. I got to sit quietly in my parents’ bay window, all ready to go, and just wait. It was the first time in days, maybe weeks, that I had sat still and basked in the moment. I could hear all those voices in the living room, the voices of people I loved, who had come just to support us, to witness for us. William and I are both actors, and it felt a little bit like what we call “half hour,” when the audience is taking their seats and you are getting ready to go on. I was in a real-life dressing room, sitting through a real-life half hour, waiting to go on for the most real-life of performances. And somewhere nearby, William was waiting, too. I cherish that moment so deeply. The moment before. And sure enough, the rain stopped.

The incredible team of Ashley Baber Weddings and Legendary Events, who between the two companies did everything from planning to tenting to catering to portable restroom-ing, rushed down to the ceremony site and dried off all of the seats, pulled tarps off of seating areas, got the outdoor bar ready, set out the lawn games, and basically did their best to hide the fact that we had just endured several hours of torrential downpour. Slowly the living room got quieter as guests made their way outside. I could hear our two dear friends, Trevor and Andrew, playing guitar and singing through a setlist that William and I picked out together down on the path. I watched from the bay window as our co-officiants, William’s best friend, Quin, and a beloved minister from my childhood, Reverend Wolf, headed down. Soon, only my father and I were left. After a moment of panic when we realized I had left William’s ring in my bedroom and my poor dad had to race back into the house to get it, we headed down. I hid behind a lace parasol that my mother bought for me since there was no way to disguise our approach. Once we arrived, I handed off the parasol and hid behind my father instead. The music changed, and the ceremony began.

William didn’t want us to see each other before the ceremony so that he could get an undiluted emotional wallop as I walked down the aisle to “Sweet Thing” by Van Morrison. I clung to my dad’s arm, shaking all over with the importance of the moment, and tried to take in all the faces as I walked by. But the face I was most excited to see was waiting at the end of the aisle, beaming at me. William and I wrote our ceremony script together, a mixture of traditional liturgy and our own ideas, a balance of the secular and the sacred. The best example of this: When Revered Wolf said the traditional “If anyone here can show just cause why these two people should not be married, speak now or forever hold your peace,” Quin countered with “Conversely, if anyone here can show just cause why these two people absolutely SHOULD be married, please reach below your chairs and do not keep your peace at all, but make a joyful noise in support of their union!” And guess what? We had taped kazoos to the bottoms of all the chairs. It gave us a wonderful chance to really look back at our guests and soak up the sight of them, feeling their positivity and blessings pouring over us. William and I also said both traditional vows and our own vows that we wrote independently so as to surprise each other. Holding William’s hands, staring into his beloved, beautiful eyeballs, making promises to each other, and feeling the loving presence of our guests, our witnesses, our village… That was my favorite moment out of the entire day. I LOVED our ceremony.

Unbeknownst to our guests, the Big Fun Brass Band from New Orleans snuck up behind them during the ceremony, and as soon as we kissed and were announced husband and wife, they struck up a rendition of Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3 in C Minor, more popularly known as “If I Had Words,” as our recessional. Once William and I reached the end of the aisle, I picked up my parasol, the trumpets really blared, and we danced our way up to the house in a good, old-fashioned, NOLA-style Second Line Parade! We had bought white umbrellas for the guests as their party favor to protect them from rain or sun (or both, as it happened), so everyone grabbed one as they left their seats and we paraded to the reception. Along the 5-minute route, we had a drinks stand and passed appetizers, because eventually William and I stopped, turned around, and made the Second Line Parade into a Receiving Line so that we could greet all of our guests. This way, everyone had sustenance while they waited. We took our photos while the guests enjoyed a very Hanley-and-Willliam-esque cocktail hour. There was a Bacon and Biscuit Wagon (two of our favorite things) with multiple kinds of bacon, biscuits, and spreads. In addition to the regular open bar options, we offered two delicious craft beers specially-made for us by our friend Matt Curling, who will soon be opening up his own brewery called Variant Brewing in Roswell, GA. William’s beer was a Centennial-style IPA and mine was a raspberry gose. There was beer pong, corn hole, etc. and all with the fabulous brass band music bouncing along in the background. Thankfully, my childhood friend and professional videographer, Chandler Mays, of Bright Elephant Productions, beautifully captured the whole day, so I have a sense of the fun that was had while we were elsewhere.

William and I took a moment to ourselves so that I could change into a reception dress – a fabulous, lightweight gown by Modern Trousseau with pockets that looked like the playful baby sister of my mom’s dress – and so that we could just be alone for a second to revel in our newly-married state. Then we made our grand entrance into the big tent and ran straight onto the dance floor. We commissioned the brass band to compose a version of “Clair de Lune” as William and I both love that song, and it turned out to be a great, jazzy, danceable rendition and a very unique first dance song. Then we bid a grateful farewell to the wildly-talented Big Fun Brass Band, and the truly show-stopping Atlanta Showstoppers took over for dinner and dancing.

The two things I hear the most from our guests about our wedding are: 1) I loved your vows, and 2) THAT BAND, THOUGH. The Atlanta Showstoppers are the best wedding band on the planet. They can play anything and everything and sound like the original band while they do it, and they are as kind and lovely as can be as human beings. I barely got to speak to anyone because we were all so busy dancing like maniacs. My favorite mishap: William danced so hard that he literally ripped his pants open, from belt buckle to crotch, and he had to borrow a pair of my little brother’s khakis for the rest of the night! Thank goodness the wedding was in the backyard!

If it isn’t apparent already, William and I really wanted our wedding day to be filled with our personalities, and I think the way we exited the wedding is one of the best examples of that. We had discussed a fun, old car, but that was a little more expensive than it was worth, so William came up with a brilliant Plan B. We are both runners, so what if we literally ran out of the wedding? I loved it, and we decided to go whole hog. We created a hand-painted “Start” banner; we made “race bibs,” mine with the number 64 and his with the number 16, for our wedding date, 6/4/16; he wore a “Just” sign on his back and I wore “Married” on mine; we tied penny-filled PBR beer cans attached to strings to our waists and they dragged along the ground behind us; we replaced our wedding shoes with running shoes; and we wore headlamps on our foreheads to light our way into the dark. Our guests lined up with sparklers, creating a kind of runway for us, with the start line at the end, and with a big huzzah, and maybe a bit too much speed, we ran off into the night and into our lives as a married couple! In a kind of perfect circle from the beginning of the festivities when I could hear our guests in the living room, we could hear people cheering in the distance behind us as we jogged through an otherwise quiet and still evening. We traveled a full mile together, and it was actually magical to have another chance to soak in the moment, to revel in what we had just done, to honor the fact that we were now an official team, and though we had our village behind us, our marriage was now ours. The wedding was just the beginning.

I cannot thank my parents, our families, our friends, or our vendors enough for that day. While things went awry and some balls were dropped and it rained off and on the whole day, none of that matters. It is forgotten in the glow of all the things that went absolutely right, often in ways I could never have predicted or planned. That would be my last piece of advice to any Brides or Grooms: lay the foundation and then let the day happen. Live it. It really is just the beginning! Many blessings to you!

How to Make Your Side Hustle a Full Time Reality

I’m a firm believer that making a living shouldn’t just be about dollar signs, but rather, making your living a lifestyle that you love. Easier said than done, I know, the rent won’t pay itself. But I’m betting a lot of you out there who aren’t 100% happy in your job have a side hustle that you’d like to eventually make a full time reality? If you’re feeling ready to take the leap, make sure to read our tips below.

Setting Financial Expectations

The first (and most obvious) is to have a financial plan in place—and I’m not just talking about paying your bills for the next six months. Do a deep dive into the numbers of your business and give yourself a forecast for the next few years. Can you get off the ground on your own? Do you need an investor? After being laid off from my first job out of college, I thought I could take my side hustle full-time. A business planning course brought me to this hard realization: If I wasn’t willing or able to invest in myself, who would want to invest in me? Being an entrepreneur is all about risk taking (and I know lots of people who started out with just a few hundred bucks), but make sure you give yourself a chance to think through those risks before diving in.

Be Ready to Outsource Tasks

Sure, you might kill it on the creative side, but do you have a plan in place for the actual business side of things? Once you make that leap to full time entrepreneur, you might find yourself spending more time on marketing, social media, accounting, website maintenance, etc. which is why a lot of small businesses actually fail. It’s important to strike a good balance between the beauty and brains of your business. Outsourcing tasks might be hard to do (financially and mentally), but in the long run it will actually help to grow your biz by allowing you to focus on your passion.

Learn From Your Competitors + Fellow Entrepreneurs

Embracing #CommunityOverCompetition is so, so important when starting your own business. Taking your side hustle full time can be a scary thing! Get your networking on my friend. Talk to other entrepreneurs in your industry and even those not in your industry, but who have successfully made their side hustle a full time reality. The support, knowledge and advice will come in handy because there WILL be ups and downs. Don’t be scared to reach out to your role models either—the worst that can happen is they don’t respond! But most times, you’ll find that fellow entrepreneurs are willing to lend advice and you might actually make life long friends in the process.

Get to Know + Engage With Your Audience

In today’s entrepreneurial world, it isn’t just important (and professional) to have those social media buttons active on your website—it’s crucial to actively engage on social media and get to know your audience. This means investing time and effort in getting to know your readers, users, clients, customers, admirers, etc. Whether you are providing a product or service, there are real people inviting you and your passion into their lives. Get to know them… ask questions, provide incentives or giveaways, reach out, comment back, start a hashtag, repost. Don’t have the time? Here’s where that outsourcing comes in!

5 Things We’ve Learned From Celebrity Weddings

When it comes to celebrities tying the knot, there are a few lessons to be learned. Who doesn’t love flipping through the gorgeous photos, elaborate decor, and stunning florals? But by looking to the stars, you can also learn how to throw the wedding you’ve been dreaming about—without their star-sized bank account.

Koby Brown Photography

Keep it simple.

When Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock tied the knot in 2013, they had a low-key farm affair. Originally, they had a huge party planned, but Clarkson said that after getting too “overwhelmed” the couple opted for a reception that felt more like them. Don’t feel the pressure to have a huge, Gatsby-style dance party if that just isn’t your thing!

Nikki Mills

Consider an unplugged “I Do”.

When Kim and Kanye said their vows, they asked guests to not snap photos of their own. Now, you probably don’t have magazines willing to pay you millions for your wedding photos, but the point’s still a good one–by asking guests to leave the snapshot taking to the photographer, they’ll be more in the moment, your dress won’t be shared before you’re ready, and you won’t get tons of pictures of iPhone screens.

O’Malley Photographers

Emphasize what matters most to you.

Blake Lively has a passion for baking, so the dessert table at her wedding to Ryan Reynolds featured tons of different tasty treats instead of one wedding cake. Find a way to incorporate your passions and hobbies into your wedding vibe.

Aaron Delesie Photographer

Make a weekend out of things.

Carrie Underwood’s 2010 nuptials to hockey player Mike Fisher included renting a resort for her family for the weekend. The day before she said “I Do”, Carrie was able to spend the day getting pedicures with her mom and two sisters, reminiscing and spending quality time together. When planning your wedding, don’t forget to make the day before special, too–it’s the last day of your single life and deserves to be cherished.

Trent Bailey Studio

Don’t feel pressure to follow traditions.

When Amber Tamblyn walked down the aisle in 2012, she was rocking a bright yellow frock. Why? Because she wanted to! According to Amber, there’s “nothing really traditional” about her, so she wanted to wear a color she liked. When it comes to your wedding, wear what you want. If you’ve been dreaming about that white Cinderella gown since you were a little girl, go for it! But if you’d like to explore out-of-the-box hues, that’s okay too.

From the Bride… Given our multicultural families, we wanted to incorporate elements of Indian, Persian, and American cultures into our wedding in a way that felt authentic to us. Our wedding planners at Shannon Leahy Events did an incredible job executing our vision of a colorful, vibrant, and welcoming event. We did the first night – which in Indian culture is traditionally known as the Sangeet – at the California Academy of Sciences where we served Persian inspired food and danced the night away to Persian and Indian music. The second night – the ceremony and reception – was held at the NWBLK, an old sign factory in the Mission district of San Francisco. Indian patterns and bright neon colors contrasted the grey and black interior and exterior of the building. Indian street food was cooked and served outside stations style. Dancing went until 2am with the addition of a taco truck and churro stand rolling up around midnight. Needless to say the food, dancing, and energy were the priorities at the wedding and we were thrilled with how everything turned out!

This Glam Office Started With a Drawing on a Napkin

If this gorgeous office is any indication, Jessica Lauren Events is a genius at crafting pretty things. That penchant for curating layers of lovely in a wedding is easily translated into her new work space. And would you believe, it all started when she doodled her dream office on a restaurant napkin? Fast forward 6 months and voila! Industrial meets all out glamour and some insanely chic blush velvet swivel chairs in this inspiring space captured by Sanaz Photography. Take the full tour here!

In October 2016 I sat down in a little Italian restaurant and drew my dream office space on a napkin. By March 2017, I was sitting at my new desk! I love the industrial glam aesthetic, it’s intense and strong yet still very feminine. I feel that reflects my personality in a way and I wanted to make sure that showed in the design. There is definitely a good mix of furniture and decor that help to create the vibe, like the black geometric chandelier with hard edges, the ultra soft blush swivel chairs, and the faux fur throw blanket. Everywhere you look there is some sort of hard element next to a softer one. One of my all time favorites in the world of design is rose gold, and I had the opportunity to pick the rose gold shade that all the furniture would be hand dyed in. I love subtle elements that make a big impact, like the textured wallpaper on the back wall, ostrich pattern side table, and especially the black sliding glass french doors! I wanted the space to be light and bright at all times, so we painted the walls bright white and made sure we had tons of bright lighting. I also wanted the space to be multifunctional. We built a lobby, my office, a mockup room, and a storage space. The mockup room table can be taken away and the area can be closed off by drapes. The empty space can be converted into a bigger storage space if needed on a busy day. This was so crucial for me because my team is always in need of more space leading up to event days! It is always fun as well to have a big reveal during a mockup in the office because we can hide a gorgeous table and then pull back the drapes and it’s a big wow-factor. Everything in the office was picked and custom designed with meaning and purpose, and hopefully it shows! Thank goodness I didn’t lose that napkin!

A Traditional-Yet-Fierce Look for This West African Bride

The wow-worthy gele. The statement, coral beads. The glamorous, gold heels. The absolutely flawless makeup. Ladies, today’s Bride looks fierce, and we know you’re going to be just as obsessed as we are. Aleeka Events conceptualized this luxe, London wedding editorial, which showcases the meaningful, traditional, and clearly beautiful wedding attire of the Nigerian Yoruba tribe. Dupe Gele and Nikita Baffour are just two of the talented artists that collaborated on this shoot, captured through the lens of Amy O’Boyle. And let me just say, it is sure to inspire.

Captured by the amazing Amy O’Boyle, the inspiration for this editorial derived from wanting to showcase the rich colors and glamour that one typically sees at a traditional West African wedding (also known as the traditional engagement), while contrasting this against the rustic aesthetic of the African landscape.

West Hampstead is a small picturesque village located in the hustle and bustle of London. However, it’s not just another London borough. This one is home to a rather special, yet hidden, gem. The Hill Garden and Pergola served as the perfect location as it boasted faded opulence, serenity, and stunning hillside views.

The traditional wedding is a colorful and significant ceremony that requires both the Bride and Groom’s families’ involvement. It is also filled with many different traditional elements such as prayers, the exchange of gifts and money, and a lot of bantering back and forth. Whether it is the food, music, or clothing, for many West African couples living in the UK, infusing their traditions and culture into their wedding day is a must.

For this editorial, we focused on the traditional clothing of a Nigerian Yoruba Bride and Groom, and the intimacy, love, and closeness between a Bride and Groom on their special day. The couple wore the most beautiful coordinating aso-oke (a hand loomed cloth woven by the Yoruba tribe of western Nigeria), completed with coral beaded jewelry, which represents power, wealth, and royalty.

All for Love, an award winning boutique florist in London, created the beautiful hand-tied bouquet and centerpiece. Both arrangements were quite loose and natural, with unique textural elements and luscious blooms. Lola and Blush created a modern stationery suite with gold calligraphy, African patterns, and a custom crest featuring a tribal mask. This is a great way for any couple to personalize their special day. Also included was a marriage acceptance letter, which by the time the wedding actually happens, the couple have already agreed that they will marry. Therefore, the letter simply marks the occasion and expresses the good will of the families to each other. Other details included a ‘Thank You’ gift basket and a two-tier textured cake by Monannie Cakes. We put a modern spin on the gift basket and incorporated popular snacks such as chin chin and plantain chips, cooking utensils and spices, fruits, and African brewed beverages.

Say Yes to A Dress That Fits Your Personality + Personal Style

The big day has FINALLY arrived. From the second that ring landed on your finger, you’ve devoured every bridal magazine you can get your hands on, created a Pinterest board that dreams are made of and can’t stop watching recaps of runway shows from bridal fashion week. Yes, today is the day you will say YES to the dress.

Before you dive headfirst into a dazzling and dizzy display of charmeuse and chiffon, you will want to consider our top three tips to ensure your dress is both chic and comfortable.

Elizabeth Fogarty

1. Prepare For Your Fitting

Shopping for your dress is one of the most important parts of the planning process so it is important that you prepare ahead of time to ensure you get the most out of your fitting. Owner and stylist of Beth Chapman Styling & Consulting, Beth Chapman, says you should be sure that your date and venue are on the books before setting up bridal appointments.

“It is next to impossible to select the perfect gown for your big day when you cannot envision yourself in the place where you will be saying I do! We love it when a bride comes with her Pinterest board to show us some idea of the aesthetic of gowns that she is attracted to. This provides the stylist with a great jumping off point!”

Kristen Beinke

You will also want to be sure to keep numbers to a minimum when reaching out to your girl squad to invite them to your appointment. Chapman recommends that brides shop with no more than 2 people to ensure you have a successful bridal appointment.

“We suggest bringing guests with you that truly understand your personal style so that they can assist you in selecting the perfect gown.”

Including your entire bridal party along with family members and close friends can often hinder the shopping process and leave you feeling overwhelmed and unable to make the right decision. Feeling like you are leaving people out? Fear not! Chapman suggests involving those special family members and friends in the alteration process or doing a meaningful reveal with them on your wedding day so everyone feels included.

2. Pay Attention to Personality and Personal Style

Chapman stresses the importance of being true to your personality and individual style when selecting your wedding gown. Personality is a huge factor to consider to ensure the dress will look and feel like you.

“If you are a bride who is type-A and is worried about your gown looking wrinkled, you might want to select a forgiving fabric like lace that will be effortless on the day of your wedding. If you are a bride who loves to dance and wants to be fancy-free on your wedding day, be sure to keep the weight of the gown in mind when making your final selection.”

3. Shop Silhouettes that Boast Your Body Type

While playing with personality and personal style is important to your dress shopping experience, paying close attention to body type is imperative for ultimate comfort on the day-of.

“If you are full chested (over a D cup), it is highly recommended that you wear a bra with your gown to ensure that you have the proper lift and support of your bust. You should keep this in mind when selecting your gown silhouette. You may have to raise the front or back neckline of the gown if it is plunging, in order to accommodate your foundation.”

Remember to enjoy the ride and take in every moment of your gown shopping experience. These are the memories and stories you will share for years to come.

6 Stylists Share How To Stay Warm and Still Look Chic at a Winter Wedding

Colder weather weddings are beautiful but it can be tricky getting dressed for the occasion. Underdress, and you’re likely to be uncomfortable and at risk of catching a cold. Overdress and be prepared to look like the Michelin man.

In order to help you avoid all of that stress we rounded up a group of style experts to not only weigh in on what’s on trend, but to make sure you’re warm wearing the season’s most popular looks. Here’s their advice:

Bonnie Sen

Dress up your layers.

Let’s start with the obvious: wear layers. Once temps start dropping, layering is crucial to stay comfortable between indoor and outdoor locations. Regardless of whether you’re wearing a dress, trousers or even a jumpsuit, Devoreaux Walton, style expert and consultant at The Poise Pursuit, recommends wearing leggings, tight, thermals or shapewear under your clothes for an extra layer of warmth (bonus points for streamlining and lumps or bumps).

Fashion stylist Brandy Joy Smith, recommends dressing up the very ‘of the moment’ pleated metallic skirt and sweater look with a pointed toe pump or sleek bootie. Finish the outfit off with statement earrings and you the have the ultimate cool girl wedding vibe look. Velvet is also trending! Fashion stylist Brandy Joy Smith says the fabric is having a moment, which is perfect for the cold because it offers major warmth.

Upgrade your accessories.
If you’re like me and not one for trend spotting, take a tried-and-true little black dress (preferably with long-sleeves) and fancy it up “with bold accessories,” says fashion expert and tv personality Jessie Kalin Mash. “Add instant glamour to any look with glitter heels, feathers and lots of color. Red is the color of the season. Incorporate the tone in your dress or via your clutch or shoes.”

If you’re looking for a more dramatic look, Devoreaux recommends a pair of leather gloves and a wide brimmed hat which are both fashionable and functional. The trick to pulling the look off is to properly coordinate the colors of your outfit with the accessories. Limit yourself to mixing three colors max. She recommends rich jewel tones like royal blue, plum and evergreen for a perfect contrast to the white and gray backdrop of the colder months.

Justine Milton Photography

Have fun covering up.
High necklines are not only on trend, they also offer a fashionable way to stay warm says Brandy. But if you need a bit more help warding off the cold, wrap yourself in a fur (or better yet), faux fur stole. She says they’re not just for the bride and this offers the perfect pop of color for a wedding look.

For a wrap alternative, George Robert Fuller, stylist to the Obamas and Chaka Khan, recommends a capelet. It’s easily removed and provides a dramatic, multi-dimensional look to any outfit.

If you prefer something more traditional, then simply upgrade your wool scarf or pashmina with the unique, textured look of alpaca wrap says Brianne Garritano Owner, Marquette Avenue Events.

This Bride Shares the Best Advice for Anyone Planning a Wedding

One look at the emotion-filled photos by Nicole Clarey, and it’s clear there’s something special about this Scarlet Oaks Estate wedding. The Bride, wise beyond her years, shared her one-word advice that made all the difference in wedding planning: meaning. From the head table – built by a friend for a couple to use at the wedding and in their home – to the carefully chosen wording throughout the celebration, each wedding day detail was carefully considered solely based on its meaning to the Bride and Groom as a couple. Read more about their thoughtful choices below, in the Bride’s own words.

From the Bride… When I thought about planning for our wedding, there was one word that I kept coming back to: meaningful. This word started to become a filter for how I made choices about what we would and wouldn’t include in our wedding day. It’s easy to get lost in the details (because, obviously who doesn’t love details?!), but at the end of the day, the details only matter to the degree that they help reflect the celebration and joy that is the real center of the day.

Here are some ways we wove meaningful details throughout our wedding day:

My husband and I decided to write commitments to one another that were unique to us. Not only was this super special for us, but it gave guests a deeper glimpse into our relationship and added a personal touch to our ceremony.

Our first dance song was one that my husband and I picked out together, and we loved the lyrics. We decided to order a tapestry that featured some of the song lyrics on it and use it as a backdrop at our wedding. It was such a unique piece at our wedding, and we’ve now repurposed it as a decor item in our first home together.

Our head table was built by one of the Groomsmen as a wedding gift to us. We use this table in our home now, and I love that the first meal we ever shared on it was on our first day of being husband and wife.

In the midst of planning, I came across so many invites and programs that were very traditionally worded. When we were creating our paper details, we decided to keep it simple, including text that was light-hearted and felt like us.

We ended our celebration with friends and family surrounding us, cheering us on, as we entered this next season of our life. That meaningful moment is one I will never forget.

5 Wedding Registries You Never Knew You Needed

How many weddings have you been to where you get two choices of registries. I’m guessing quite a few! If you don’t need a toaster and a lemon zester, have a read of these five wedding registries you’ve probably never heard of!

Les Productions de la Fabrik

Thirsty Nest
This registry is for the fun, sophisticated, modern couple, where they can register for wine and spirits! You can select specific bottles and also barware for your new home, and they really have something for everyone. Choose something off their 1-Click-Registry Essentials list, or create a selection for your wedding specifically! This one is definitely for the cool couple everyone wants to hang out with on the weekend!

Give:Tendr
This is a new site, all about allowing couples to register for “gifts that make an emotional, financial, and social impact”. You begin by choosing a charity off their list for a percentage of each gift to go toward, and on your page you can explain to your guests why you’ve chosen the charity and why it’s important to you! The benefits are pretty win-win: It costs you nothing to register for gifts on Give:Tendr, a charity of your choice automatically receives a percentage of every gift you get, and your givers are given the option to make their purchase tax-deductible! The current charities include: Action Against Hunger, Americares, American Red Cross, Muddy Paws Rescue and many more! If you don’t see the charity you’re after, you can always request it and they will reach out to get them on board!

love is my favorite color

Travelers Joy
This registry is essentially like crowdfunding your honeymoon! Personally, I think this is a brilliant idea. Many couples are already living together prior to getting married and may already have a lot of typical home items on common registries. This option allows your guests to be a part of allowing you and your partner to go on an adventure where you can make great, lasting memories! Travelers Joy is free to use, and the best part? It automatically generates a list of all your guests, the gifts they provided, and their full contact information so you can easily create your thank-you cards: insert praise-hands emoji!

Tessa Neustadt

Feather our Nest
On the other side of the coin, you could chose a registry where your friends and family help you, literally, build a home! Feather Our Nest allows you to post photos of exactly what kind of ‘nest’ you and your husband are hoping to create, such as a new nursery, an addition, or a remodeled kitchen. This way, no one has to take the time to wrap a small appliance that may potentially go un-used, and you get to specify exactly the type of gift or contribution you are after. On a bigger scale, you can use this registry to fund a down payment on your dream home. If that doesn’t say “be a part of starting our new lives”, I don’t know what does!

Dominos Wedding Registry
Finally, I can practically guarantee you haven’t heard of this one! I may need to take back what I said about the cool couple- the coolest couples definitely have registered for pizza over high-tech toasters! With the Dominos’ Registry, your guests can gift you vouchers for varying amounts of pizza for different occasions. It’s simple, easy-to-navigate, and perfectly cheesy. We’re guessing the groom out there will love this one!
