This wedding, in my humble opinion, is exactly what a late summer wedding should be: full of gorgeous, bright flowers; overflowing with delicious, cold lemonade; set outdoors in an artisan vineyard; and captured perfectly by Anne Robert, an obvious genius. And if that isn’t enough for you, there’s the most amazing Ikat fabric (think tasteful tie-dye), picked out by the amazing talents at Pineapple Productions, that adorned everything from the tables to the place cards. From Allison at Pineapple Productions: Tricia and Jason, both DC-based political consultants, discovered Sperryville, Virginia, when they were looking for a weekend getaway driving distance from the city but seemingly thousands of miles away from the craziness of their work lives. Sperryville has a funky art gallery, a gourmet restaurant, antique shops and the very lovely Sharp Rock Vineyards.
Sharp Rock is a gorgeous property set on the Hughes River and at the foot of Old Rag Mountain. Tricia had a strong sense of wanting a late summer wedding that incorporated almost a Mediterranean inspired palette of cerulean blue, stark white and pops of bright orange red. She also asked me to find blue and white ikat fabric we could have sewn into table runners, linens and even throw pillows. The ceremony was staged on top of the bluff with a breathtaking mountain view as a backdrop. As guests arrived, they were greeted with minted lemonade and asked to begin making their way through the vineyard toward the ceremony location.
We used two of the vineyard’s wine barrels as stands for welcoming floral arrangements to designate the entrance. Holly, the floral designer, suggested involving touches of green flowers with the orange for the ceremony and having arrangements with a slightly looser and more natural feel. She incorporated things like curly willow, berry, vine and thistle with amazing orange local dahlias and green hydrangea to provide interesting texture and lushness. Tricia carried an incredible bouquet of orange roses, tulips, freesia, crocosmia and mini callas with touches of tiny green button mums. The bouquet was classic with a touch of whimsy – the perfect accompaniment to Tricia’s stunning and simple Monique Lhuillier gown accessorized with a chic birdcage veil and Louboutin shoes. Bridesmaids selected navy blue dresses from Thread in a range of styles. They wore adorable metallic gold Cole Haan wedges, the perfect shoe for an outdoor wedding! For a fresh and unexpected look, Holly created clutches of all green cabbage roses, hydrangeas and button mums for them to carry down the aisle.
After the ceremony, guests sipped Sharp Rock wines in the courtyard as calypso music played in the background. We hung breezy white lanterns with a touch of sparkle in the walnut trees and accented the Adirondack chairs with ikat pillows. Custom orange raw silk runners were placed on existing wrought iron and picnic tables. We set a farm table with fabulous artisan cheeses, stone fruit chutneys and nuts, and we created menus – and all other signage — out of chalkboard paper placed in wood frames we whitewashed ourselves. For escort cards, we tacked white envelopes calligraphed in orange ink to ikat fabric boards we hung on the wooden fence enclosing the courtyard.
For the reception, we used a mix of round and rectangular tables in the dinner tent, covering them with a combination of crisp white cotton and blue and white ikat. Holly placed cheery orange blooms in an eclectic mix of white milk glass containers, and more white paper lanterns hung from the tent ceiling. Instead of wedding cake, Tricia and Jason wanted mini pies and tarts. We ordered an assortment of seasonal tarts from the Albemarle Baking Company – peach, pear, chocolate ganache and lemon – and displayed them on rustic wooden trays. We also came up with a special dessert surprise – a late night visit by the world’s hippest donut truck, Carpe Donut. Matt Rohdie, owner of Carpe Donut, served organic apple cider donuts and cioccolata (thick Italian style hot chocolate) out of a super fun painted red wagon that turned out to be a major décor piece in itself. It was a huge crowd pleaser!
