Spaces Don’t Have To Be Big To Be Bright

Editor’s Note: There’s so much style packed into this tiny space it’s almost UNFAIR. Like seriously every square inch of it proves you don’t need thousands of square feet to highlight good design choices. Oh and try not to let your jaw just hit the floor when you see the view from the living room. *heart eyes*

Location: This 500 square foot apartment above a 2-car garage is located in downtown Jackson Hole, WY at the base of Snow King Mountain, which is the beautiful view out the living room window as seen in the photos.

About the Owner: The apartment is owned by Paul Kinnard, a contractor and the best man in our wedding. I met Adam, an architect who became my husband, when I moved next door to the first house he and Paul built together. It turned out we had more in common than our red hair – I’m an interior designer. Fast forward several years and projects later, and Adam, Paul and I purchased this property together with the intention of dividing it in two, which we have since done.  Together, we first designed and built this garage apartment, which now belongs to Paul. Paul was kind enough to let us live in the apartment while we all three worked on restoring a historical cabin from 1936 next door. Once our daughter was born and the construction was finished, Adam and I moved into the cabin.

Design style: Despite having divided the property, the two structures which are adjacent, speak to each other. We love the balance of old and new, which is reflected on the interiors as well. I would describe our aesthetic as ‘clean and collected’. Since the apartment was new construction, we juxtaposed that with several antiques. The kitchen table was found at a local thrift store for $20 and is the perfect scale for the space. Because of the drop leaves, it serves as a console or dining table. The living room chairs are original mid-century modern. They are perfect for the small room because they feel light but were comfortable enough to become our favorite spot to sit and watch skiers come down the mountain during cocktail hour.

Inspiration: Our inspiration for the project was all about making the most of a small space that is functional but feels very charming. Because the kitchen is concise and open to the living room, we decided to panelize all of the miniature-sized appliances. The fireplace is a focal point and it was important to us that it be wood burning. Adam and Paul love to cut wood in the fall, so luckily there’s never a shortage of firewood. I have the fondest memory spending Christmas in this small apartment, playing cards by the crackling fire. The sconces were a great addition to the plaster fireplace as they create great ambient light. In the bedroom, we built in Ikea dressers which were cost-effective and functional. The closet doors are integrated into the tongue and groove paneling so that it reads as a solid wall.

Process: We established Third Wheel, LLC in 2016 and first went to work on designing the garage apartment. Adam and Paul built the structure themselves on nights and weekends. I was in charge of finishes, furnishings, and sandwiches for lunchtime. The finishes are simple but refined. We went with basic tile but allocated more for lighting, which instantly elevated the space. Even if you’re planning on living in a space temporarily, there’s no reason not to design and furnish your space to the best of your ability. Look for plug-in sconces, great shelving, or beautiful outdoor planters that will give your space a custom look that’s not permanent. A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into building this little apartment and we are lucky we still get to enjoy it since it’s right next door.

This Might Just Be Our New Fave Barn Wedding Venue in the Northwest!

“I’ll love you as long as the river runs and the mountains still stand”… a quote so beautiful and so fitting provided by Kaity Brawley Photography for today’s beautiful Jackson Hole wedding. From beginning to end, this day exudes natural beauty. We’re absolutely LIVING for the brides long sleeve lace gown, her cape absolutely took our breath away. Hitched coordinated every thoughtful detail flawlessy while Flowers by Chloe created simple yet stunning arrangements that perfectly complimented the natural beauty of their surroundings. See it all unfold at the full gallery!

From Kaity Brawley PhotographyMeghan and Matt said their vows along the bank of the Snake River surrounded by the Tetons and their closest family and friends. Vacationing to Jackson Hole in the summers as a child Meghan always knew it was where she wanted to one day get married.

Meghan and Matt are both in the event industry and knew they wanted their destination wedding to be a unique immersive weekend for their guests, planning every detail with their experience in mind. Starting with custom welcome boxes upon arrival, to a river rafting rehearsal dinner, to dancing under a meteor shower at their reception.

Their ceremony design was simple to let the natural landscape really shine. Wooden benches, green aisle pieces, and some vintage rugs were all it needed. The Tetons provided the perfect backdrop behind the bride and groom.

At their reception they chose florals to echo the colors of the landscape and horn napkin rings to pay homage to Snake River Ranch

Long dining tables provided the perfect amount of intimacy for their plated dinner under the shadow of the rugged Teton mountain range.

Jackson Hole Vow Renewal at Spring Creek Ranch in Every Shade of Pink

Do you all love when a Groom writes the love story as much as I do? Today’s real-life vow renewal from Simply Sarah, is paired with the sweetest damn writeup and a meet-cute that’ll have you aww-ing up a storm. Hitched JH helped to plan this celebration of love, while Magnolia Ranch tackled design and florals—making for a vows and views moment like no other. Pull up a seat and enjoy this mountainside jaw-dropper … after you finish oooh-ing a wee bit more over these killer Bella Belle shoes!

A Valentine’s Day reminder that “The real act of marriage takes place in the heart, not in the ballroom or church or synagogue. It’s a choice you make – not just on your wedding day, but over and over again…” (from barbara de angelis).

From the groom on how he and Victoria met and fell in love… Victoria and I met on a bus winding through the astounding beauty of the Swiss Alps. We connected immediately, sharing a profound respect and reverence for the spectacular peaks that passed by our windows. As we winded through the alpine valleys and through the mountainous tunnels, we discussed our lives and families. It didn’t take long to realize that we had more in common than our love for travel. Victoria’s family had recently purchased a vacation home in Jackson Hole. I am a Jackson native and this lovely woman sitting next to me had just shared that she vacationed in my hometown. If that wasn’t coincidental enough, her family’s house was on Snow King the exact same neighborhood where I grew up.

When we met I was working as a travel guide bringing people to destination resorts throughout greater Europe. My colleagues and I frequently talked about how lucky we were to get paid to travel the globe. My job, however, provided me with even more luck than money and experience; it placed me on a path that crossed Victoria’s. We talked for nearly eight straight hours as our bus brought us to the Jungfrau resort town of Interlaken. I remember thinking to myself that whatever paths my youthful, meandering life had brought me down, I sincerely hoped my life would end up on the same trail as Victoria’s. The conversation concluded, and I told her that the next time she was in Jackson hole, I would love to be her guide to the valley.

As life sometimes does, time and space separated Victoria and I. We kept in touch over the following years; she was in D.C. and I was living in Rome, Italy. Fate finally saw fit for our paths to cross again during a winter vacation in Jackson and the rest was history! We are so excited to call Jackson our home and to raise our family in this fairytale of a town. We are so happy to have shared our love for the mountains with all our friends and family!

The Epitome of A Cozy + Chic Wedding

People may dream of Napa Valley nuptials and long for sweet Southern celebrations but these regions better watch out; the North is amping it up. Specifically, Wyoming. They are pulling out the wedding works and delivering jaw-dropping results. Look no further than this Jackson Hole inspiration shoot from Simply Sarah Photography. The epitome of cozy, chic and crazy romantic, it is making us crave more winter weddings immediately. See all the details right this way!

From Sami with Magnolia Ranch… It is always great fun to collaborate with fellow creatives and this was no exception! Inspired by the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year, we were excited to pull in the vintage glassware in similar colors. The Top Montana’s tabletop items combined with La Tavola’s gauzy table runner and velvet napkins created the perfect reception table. Of course the flowers are our favorite part, and the Japanese ranunculus in the perfect muted tone of ultraviolet just made our hearts sing! We wanted to keep the florals loose and organic without feeling messy or too wild so we chose to incorporate Lunaria which is delicate and has such an ethereal feel to it making it perfect for a snowy wedding day! We love keeping ceremonies intimate, and the roaring fire and candles en masse, seemed appropriate for Snake River Sporting Club’s cozy indoor location.

The Perfect Winter Vow Renewal

The only thing more beautiful than committing your life to the one you love is making that very same promise in a vow renewal. Set in the snowy mountains of Jackson, Wyoming, Callie and Brad recreated their wedding day, complete with a cozy outdoor dinner celebration. Simply Sarah photographed the day and you won’t want to miss a single second.

Callie + Brad’s Love Story

Brad and I met in January of 2011, however, our actual first encounter is up for debate. Brad says we were introduced by our good friend at a concert at The Mangy Moose. I remember our first meeting being a couple weeks later after skiing one snowy Saturday. A friend and I had just finished skiing and were walking towards Nick Wilsons for a beer when I heard someone call my name. I turned around to see a very handsome bearded man walking towards me. He smiled familiarly, said hello and reminded me his name was Brad. I excitedly nodded and smiled back. He asked for my number and after he walked away my friend asked, “Who was that?” I laughed and said, “I have no idea.”

Brad called me a month later (nearly too long) and asked me on our first date, and because of the ever-changing facial hair of men in Jackson, I didn’t quite recognize him when he came to pick me up. That night we had one of the best times dancing at a friend’s birthday party in Jackson and knew this was something special. We immediately enjoyed doing all the things that come so easily to everyone in Jackson. We spent most of our time together skiing, biking, camping and floating the river. Over July 4th weekend 2015, the two of us hiked the Teton Crest trail.

The Teton Crest trail traverses throughout the Teton Mountains and is an absolutely stunning 40-mile trek. On our second day of backpacking which happened to be July 4th, we found ourselves at the Alaska Basin, a beautiful, peaceful, subalpine basin scattered with tons of little sparkling lakes, ponds, and boulders. It is a magical place. After a long, hot day of hiking, I went down to the water to take a dip and Brad said he would set up camp. As I was sunning myself on a big boulder next to the water, Brad quietly came up behind me and surprised me. I honestly thought he was trying to throw me in the lake. When I turned around he had dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him. I said yes!

We both grew up on the East Coast, but we knew instantly that we wanted to get married in Jackson so all our friends and family from back home could come see this beautiful place. Jackson is where we fell in love with each other and the place we now call home. All the adventures we experience together here make our relationship and love stronger. When you are out in the mountains challenging yourself and pushing your limits, it gives you a deep sense of trust and admiration for the place and people around you.

Rustic, Romantic Wedding for these High School Sweethearts

Some things are meant to be and the story of these high school sweethearts is a perfect example. When it looked like rain was coming, the sun came out and shined down on their big day so they danced and laughed and loved all night long and Moonstone Pictures got it all on film. And don’t miss the true little love bird that followed along on all the day’s moments… doesn’t get cuter than that!

From the Bride… Just about a decade after meeting Mekki, I walked down a rose petal-laden aisle to an acoustic guitar to become his wife in an incredibly beautiful, special, and loving ceremony in our new home town of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Flanked by our closest friends and family, with the beautiful Teton Mountains engulfed in fog in the background, the rain paused, clouds parted, and the sun shone as I walked arm-in-arm with my beloved father to meet my soon-to-be husband and we said our vows. It was the only time the sun came out that day! I had a Cindarella moment as a precious little bird followed me down the aisle and stayed with us the length of the ceremony, and even hopped over to be part of our pictures! During our reception we sipped spicy blood orange margaritas, dined on delicious short ribs, listened to the most thoughtful speeches, and danced the night away to the most incredible wedding band I have ever heard. I don’t think there was one person sitting down once the party got started, and I most certainly ruined my hair and makeup! From the miraculous change in weather, to the overwhelming love expressed and felt by everybody present, our day was nothing short of magical and the most fun, special way for us to begin our new chapter together as husband and wife.

From Moonstone PicturesJane and Mekki had been high school sweethearts, so there was an added specialness to the day as most of the guests had watched both of them grow up together. We were all prepared for rain and an indoor ceremony, but as often happens, the skies opened up just as guests arrived. With umbrellas ready, everyone stood for the ceremony, with the sun only beaming brighter, in the face of the Tetons at the beautiful Lost Creek Ranch.

Oh, and that bird!! You’ll see him in a couple of shots, but he actually was somehow part of the entire event, unexplainably connected to Jane and Mekki. He arrived just before start time, traveled up and down the aisle for the full ceremony, stayed close for pictures and even ventured into the tent for toasts and dancing. A true love bird!

Rustic + Romantic Jackson Hole Ranch Wedding

Maybe because I’m saying my own “I do’s” beside gorgeous mountains in only a mere couple of weeks, but these pics from Carrie Patterson have me practically jumping out of my seat. From the intimate ceremony scene to the detailed decor throughout the celebration, In Any Event created one beautiful bash weaving the rustic natural elements elegantly through it all (I’m taking notes!). More this way!

From the beautiful Bride… Sami’s first trip with my family was a ski trip to Jackson Hole, a place my family has enjoyed many a summer and winter vacation. It has always been a special place to me, and it didn’t take long for Sami to fall in love with Jackson as well. We met five years prior while Sami was in med school and I was in nursing school. We’d like to say we met thru some scholarly endeavor, but we met at a graduate school event in a bar in North Carolina. After a few bourbons (I’m a Kentucky girl afterall) and teaching Sami the pretzel, the rest was history. Our dog, Pup, joined us shortly thereafter, and the pack was complete. It was only fitting Pup attend our wedding as the flower girl.

The day of the wedding was cool and rainy, but it didn’t matter. The sun peeked out from behind the clouds for a short moment after we said our vows, and that was enough for us. We are forever grateful to our wedding planner, Elizabeth Kelleher of In Any Event, for arranging a back up tent for the ceremony just in case. Outdoor weddings can be risky, and you have to be just as excited about your rain plan as you are about your perfect weather plan. The weather also provided an excellent opportunity for Carrie Patterson to showcase her incredible photography skills. Enduring the cool temps was well worth the amazing photographs!

Although we decided to get married on a ranch in the great outdoors, we were hoping for an intimate, spiritual feel for the ceremony. What better way to accomplish that than church pews and classical music? Yes, under that intimate tent in the great outdoors, we had church pews to provide that sense of reverence and community. Beautiful classical music provided by my brother, an amazing cellist, was icing on the cake for what proved to be our perfect ceremony. At the reception, we kept the décor simple, but elegant and added a few local touches. We flew the Wyoming state flag atop the reception tent and used a moose icon on several items including the cocktail stirrers. Instead of a traditional guest book, we decided to frame two photographs by Tom Mangelsen, a local legendary nature photographer. Guests inscribed their well wishes on the matte border of the photographs. Both photographs now hang in our home, and are a constant reminder of the love and support we felt from our family and friends on our wedding day and every day. Many of our guests were traveling to Jackson for the first time. We were so excited to introduce them to all Jackson has to offer from rafting trips to bike rides to mountain hikes. A wedding day is special for any couple, but add in your best family and friends in your favorite place on earth, and it doesn’t get much better than that.

From the beautiful Bride… I moved to Dallas from New York in 2009 and we both worked at JP Morgan, but we worked in different divisions and didn’t know each other. We met three years later and discovered that we had several mutual friends and knew all of the same former colleagues. We dated for several months, but our work schedules were so radically different that we didn’t have time to see each other and ultimately decided that it wouldn’t work. Several months later, I changed jobs and fate brought us back together. We literally bumped into each other on the street one Sunday afternoon in the winter of 2013 and knew that we had to try again. We went to dinner the following week and were both lamenting about the fact that neither one of us had time to ski much that season. That Friday morning Brad called to tell me it was dumping powder in Taos and we needed to chase the storm. Three hours later we were at the airport. The rest is history.

We both share a passion for the outdoors and adventure, which was one of the major qualities we liked about each other. Skiing is our favorite activity. I grew up in Michigan skiing every weekend, and Brad spent summers at Mt. Hood race camps. When we started dating, we were each so excited to finally have a partner in crime and began chasing powder together – literally booking trips on Friday mornings during ski season and leaving work hours later to find the freshest snow. Brad proposed on top of the mountain in Vail last winter, and we knew we had to incorporate the mountains into our wedding. Jackson Hole is our favorite ski town so it was an easy choice!

The weather was critical for us because the whole reason we were in Jackson Hole was to share the beauty of the mountains with our friends and family, but unfortunately it was cold and rainy all week. We chartered a rafting trip for all of the guests and could not cancel, so we made everyone raft the Snake River in 48 degree weather in the pouring rain. Even with the rain everyone thought it was really fun and of course memorable. Our wedding day was the first day all week that you could see the mountains and the clouds parted dramatically right before our ceremony. In the end we were so thankful for the weather because it created the most beautiful lighting and backdrop for photos.

From the handsome Groom… The reception featured elk and trout as local fare and had a whiskey and rye bar, but the big hit of the cuisine was a key lime pie that was served in lieu of the customary wedding cake. I’m a key lime pie connoisseur and thoroughly approved. We also had custom suits from D. Jones made which made the wedding extra special for the groomsmen. Whiskey, elk, key lime pie and Phil Round in the shadow of the Tetons sky is pretty hard to beat.

From The Bride… Mountain towns and skiing have always held a special place in our hearts. Shortly after learning to walk, Nick and I both learned to ski. What united us after our graduation from Vanderbilt University was our career goals in medicine, our love of the outdoors, and of course our love of skiing. In early spring of 2011, Nick proposed while skiing at Beaver Creek Mountain with photographers in tow. This location was carefully chosen, as it is where I learned to ski. With this epic proposal, I knew that we would have to wed amidst the beauty of the mountains. Nick’s grandparents’ home in Jackson Hole, a destination where he skied as a child, provided the most incredible backdrop for our rustic and elegant wedding. Instead of fine paper invitations it was wood thanks to the design of Chick Invitations, instead of a ballroom it was a finished barn and a tent among the Tetons, instead of table numbers it was ski trails, and instead of crystal glassware it was ski boot shot glasses. Growing up, my mom and I used to say that my style was Shabby Chic. I wanted my wedding to portray this style, polished yet rustic.

Most of our guests were traveling from the East Coast, so we decided to make their long journey memorable. The weekend started with a cowboy themed welcome dinner at the Four Seasons and welcome bags put together by Jackson Hole Marketplace which included locally sourced items; huckleberry jam, buffalo jerky, and Kate’s Tram Bars Friday night, the rehearsal dinner was held at the Couloir. At the top of the Gondola, the views are unparalleled and the food was just divine. We envisioned our wedding day as one full of family and friends, a mountain backdrop, sunshine, colorful florals, plenty of libations, and an energetic band. We danced until we dropped and all aspects far exceeded our expectations and our day was absolutely magical.

The most memorable moment of our beautiful day was seeing Nick for the first time as I walked down the aisle. I had kept all of the details of my dress, veil, hair, and makeup a secret. His face was truly priceless and I am so lucky that my amazing photographer captured this moment.

We danced to Nizlopi’s “Love Is”. When Nick and I first started dating we were obsessed with this British band and would listen to their CD on repeat for hours. Although it is a song that not many people know, it held a lot of meaning for the two of us.

The menu featured Grilled Flat Iron Steak, Mashed Potatoes, Haricot Vert, Tarragon Chimichurrin paired with Seared Steel Head Trout with Chipotle Corn and Napa Cabbage Veegetable Slaw. Probably the biggest hit from the evening was the Pig Candy – a Bistro Catering secret: spicy candied bacon. Our friends are STILL talking about this and the band, Party Crashers. For any party in the west, Party Crashers knows how to make everyone put on their dancing shoes and sing their hearts out. What we wanted was an epic evening in a magnificent place-we truly couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day and are so thankful to all of our vendors, friends, and family for making our day perfect.

Jackson Hole Wedding at Shooting Star

Jackson Hole ranks high on my list of places I want to visit, and after fawning over this beauty captured by Carrie Patterson and planned to perfection by Lovely Day Events I’m ready to book my tickets for tomorrow. From the Bride…Our wedding day was absolutely magical. From the beginning, Riley and I knew that we wanted our day to be an elegant mix of modern and rustic, with playful touches, amazing food and great music. It was also important to us to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere for all of our guests, where everyone could relax and enjoy themselves. On a trip up to Jackson Hole to visit Riley’s parents, we fell in love with Shooting Star, with it’s beautiful modern barn and gorgeous view of the Tetons.

Because Jackson was quite a trek for most of our guests, we decided to make our wedding into a weekend getaway. We kicked off the wedding festivities with a cowboy-themed Welcome Party the night before the wedding, and held what we lovingly referred to as the Recovery Brunch the day after. On the wedding day, guests were greeted with Arnold Palmer’s before the ceremony, and we had galvanized buckets full of pashminas in case anyone got a little chilly.  We also placed an overview of the evening at each table that highlighted the special things we had planned. No one missed the milk and chocolate chip cookies during dancing or the sparkler send off at the end of the night!

From the programs to the horseshoe escort cards, the table numbers to the organza bags filled with lavender for guests to toss as we walked down the aisle, we did the vast majority of wedding projects ourselves, wanting to put our own spin on the details. Riley and I designed the invitations, balancing the formal design with playful copy. My mom even handmade each of the table runners. I wore broaches borrowed from my grandmothers, one in my hair and one on my bouquet, and had a piece of lace from my mom’s dress sewn into my own. One of my favorite elements had to be the star lanterns we hung above the dance floor. They provided a little bit of sparkle that was absolutely gorgeous. All of these little touches created a very personal, intimate feeling.

Our wonderful vendors also helped us bring everything to life. Pastor Ben set the perfect tone with a ceremony that was funny, thoughtful and incredibly meaningful.  Maho Catering made the most amazing food and provided an incredible level of service to our guests (one of my favorite quotes from the evening was a friend who said “It was like we were at a 5-star restaurant and a wedding broke out!”).  Phil Round and the Snake River Band played fantastic music that everyone enjoyed. Carrie Patterson and Jared Wortley each captured the day in breathtaking detail. And Lisa, our day of coordinator from Lovely Day Events, made sure I didn’t have to worry about a thing.

At the end of the night, the band played  “Hey Jude” as the final song, and all of our guests surrounded Riley and I in a circle as we danced. It totally spontaneous and was absolutely magical. It was the perfect way to end the perfect day. We could not have asked for anything better.

Finding Love In The Aftermath of a Storm

When this groom signed up as a volunteer with Medishare after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, he knew that his experience would be moving and gratifying. What he didn’t know was just how much of an impact it would have on the rest of his life. He wrote, “Not only did I learn how resilient and appreciative Haitian people are, but I found out what great types of folks take time out of their lives to help after such disasters.”  And thus began this couple’s love story — captured so beautifully by Carrie Patterson. See more in this gorgeous gallery.

From the Bride… Ed and I met in 2010 after the devastating earthquake in Haiti. We were volunteering at a tent hospital near the airport and it was love at first sight. Although the days (and nights) were long, we found a little time to learn about each other over warm Imperial beers. Back in the states, we were both quickly accruing frequent flyer miles commuting between San Francisco and Houston before deciding to co-habitate in the Bayou City. (More on our story here) Two and a half years later (and a 12 hour assent) he proposed to me on top of the Grand Teton in Jackson, Wyoming. It was one of the best and most exciting, days of my life. Although the view at 13, 775 ft is breath taking, I could not wait to get down (which took about 8 hours) so I could wear my ring!

Having our wedding in Jackson Hole was a no brainer as we love vacationing there and we consider it our “special” spot. Of course we wanted the main attraction at our wedding to be the jaw dropping views of the Tetons, so picking out our venue was the most important. Choosing the Jackson Hole Golf and Country club was perfect for the view we wanted.

Little details were very important when planning our wedding. Some of my favorites were using a part of a climbing rope to tie a “love knot” (or a figure 8 and fisherman’s knot to us climbers) during the ceremony, using a special letter we received from a family member as part of our vows and our cocktail recipes that we crafted ourselves.

One of our other favorites from our wedding that we think gave it a unique touch was the choice of our transportation, a 1948 Chrysler Windsor highlander edition. It was such a classic, beautiful car but what we loved most was the interior, Scottish tartan. With Ed’s Scottish heritage, that car was even more special for us.

We wanted to treat our guests to an amazing meal and we wanted to have a slightly more modern reception so we decided on Hotel Terra. Hotel Terra definitely blew us and our guests away with delicious food and spectacular service. We were very detailed with how we wanted our dishes prepared (some were inspired by our favorite restaurant in Houston) and they executed every detail perfectly.

Through out the whole day, I was just stunned by all the beautiful peonies, hydrangeas, garden roses and other flowers. The moss monogram used for the reception really added a unique touch. Sami of Magnolia Ranch definitely went over the top, turning what I could only dream of, into reality. It was absolutely breath taking!

Our guests were given parting gifts of stainless steel water bottles with a traditional Jackson Hole logo, a bucking bronco with a cowboy. Attached to the bottle was a small red carabiner with our names and wedding date. The carabiner was an important touch I wanted to add since Ed proposed to me with the ring on a red carabiner.

Even though the wedding was 6 months ago, we are still getting complements over and over again from friends and family on what an amazing day our wedding was. Ed and I are thrilled that the day turned out the way we wanted with our family and friends, full of love and beauty. It truly was a day I never wanted to end and I am so happy that we can re-live it through the photography that captured our day perfectly.

Jackson Hole Wedding from Carrie Patterson Photography

Question: What do you get when you cross a rustic setting with modern design, plus a mountain landscape that looks straight out of a postcard? The answer lies in this Wyoming destination wedding designed by Kari Andersen and Lovely Day Events, with decorations crafted at the hands of the bride herself. It’s a super fresh take on a nature-driven affair with a slew of gorgeous details woven in along the way. Carrie Patterson made sure you didn’t miss a moment, and we pinky promise not to judge if you spend the entire day pinning away right here.

From the Bride…With a gorgeous place like Jackson Hole, Wyoming, as our wedding backdrop, nature did most of the heavy lifting when it came to decor. Since the setting was taken care of, Kevin and I decided to put our hearts into the small, special details that really made our wedding uniquely us. During the planning process, we kept one thought in mind: we wanted this wedding to be as beautiful and special for our family and friends as it would be for us. Here’s how we made our personalities shine through while playing off of our amazing surroundings. After scouring the Internet for pictures of possible locations, we chose Jackson Hole as the setting for our beautiful day. Kevin likes modern, simple and unique elements while I am a full-color girl at heart, so incorporating natural elements while adding some fun, fresh accents was a must. We found a great website that printed some of our wedding suite on wood, including our save the dates and wedding invitations.

Twenty of our closest family and friends were able to make the journey to Wyoming. We knew that we wanted to provide them with a classy yet relaxed atmosphere, so as guests arrived at their hotels, they received a welcome bag printed with the same mountain from our invitation. The bag was filled with a number of custom-labeled goodies, including trail mix we made ourselves, a small beverage set and information on Jackson Hole restaurants and activities. We also hand-wrote thank you cards to guests to express our gratitude and emphasize their importance in our lives. They were included in the bags along with directions to the wedding and reception. To ensure that everyone felt relaxed and enjoyed themselves, our cocktail hour included lawn games with beanbags that were sewn with the same material used on other wedding elements. The boards for the game were painted by Kevin and my mom and featured the same moose that were on our invitation.

I learned how to sew from my grandmother, who is a very important person in my life, and wanted to infuse that love and creativity into as many wedding details as possible. Together, we spent months sewing a variety of projects for the wedding using bright, modern fabrics. I created a quilt for the cake table that included a mountain, our names and the date on the back. I also made napkins for the dining tables that featured a different appliquéd heart for each person’s setting. We tried to incorporate the nature-inspired decorwhenever possible, so the tables featured a number of natural textures such as centerpieces in wooden boxes, handmade linen napkins and burlap chair sashes. Even the butter pats were moose-shaped!

Dinner was the perfect place to add a bit of Wyoming flavor – literally! For the more adventurous guests, we offered a moose medallion entrée. For those who wanted something more familiar, we had pork (an Iowa favorite). We also used a Jackson Hole staple to create a fun twist on my favorite drink as our signature beverage: huckleberry margaritas! Huckleberry was also a filling in our cake. We opted for a non-traditional guestbook. Each guest was invited to sign their name on a heart “to wish the couple a happy start.” Our favorite signatures were those of our young nieces. It will be fun to look back on those scribbly signatures in a few years! Instead of writing our own vows, Kevin and I exchanged cards and gifts that we opened when we were apart. Kevin gave me a simple but beautiful pearl bracelet. I wore this along with special earrings that I had custom-made using diamonds from my late (and very special) uncle’s wedding band and pearls that were a gift from my cousin. For Kevin, I used our invites as the inspiration for custom-made metal cufflinks shaped like small mountains with a heart in the middle. He loves tequila, so I wanted to find a special bottle I remembered him mentioning when we were first dating. I quickly discovered that the tequila had been discontinued, but that didn’t stop me from calling every listing I found online. My determination paid off: he was surprised with a bottle of Milagro Romance on our wedding day.

While some people may think that having such a small number of guests might impact the overall experience, we enjoyed all the perks of a big wedding, including a cocktail hour, our first dance as the sun set, a traditional cake cutting, a toast and dancing with our guests. Some folks headed home early, but the younger crowd ventured out with us to the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar where we spent the rest of the night sitting on saddles, sipping drinks! And throughout the next couple days after the wedding, we were able to participate in activities with family, including river rafting.

Now, more than six months later, it is so satisfying to have subtle daily reminders of our wedding. Our guestbook hangs on the wall in our home, we use the handmade napkins for dinners together, Kevin wears his cufflinks to other events and we even occasionally play the lawn games with our friends. Someday – though not anytime soon – maybe our cake quilt can be used for a little one. I am grateful for all these special little touches that we continue to appreciate. The day truly ended up being a beautiful affair with the focus on celebrating our love and the importance of our closest family and friends. Tip for brides with a tight budget: Have your wedding on a weekday or off day, especially if you are planning a destination wedding. Since everyone was traveling to the wedding, we decided on a Thursday, which allowed us to negotiate lower rates with some of our vendors.

Jackson Hole Winter Engagement from Amy Galbraith Photography

Santa may have officially packed up his sleigh for another year, but that doesn’t mean the gift giving has to end. Especially when that gift is a breathtaking Jackson Hole engagement session captured perfectly by Amy Galbraith Photography and features two ski loving cuties and one of the most stunning mountain backdrops you will ever lay your eyes upon.  (Literally.)  It’s a magical winter wonderland wrapped up in a whole lot of pretty and you can see every last love-filled moment right here.

From Amy Galbraith Photography… Annie & Chase are two awesome people that I’ve met during my time living in Jackson Hole. They met here, got engaged here, and are getting married here! Their wedding is this summer but we decided to do some engagement photos during the winter. Since the two of them are amazing skiers, running around in the snow for a few hours didn’t seem to bother them much. We took these classic Jackson Hole engagement photos in Grand Teton National Park at Mormon Row, and had so much fun! I love these barns. They are so rustic, and provided the perfect background for this wintery photo session. With the crazy blizzards that have been rolling through this December, we got super lucky with cloudy skies, light snow, and no wind. Love these two!

Jackson Hole Wedding from Carrie Patterson Photography

I’m going out on a limb here when I say Jackson Hole might be the ideal spot for a wedding. It’s perfect – beautiful weather, beautiful scenery, and some of the most beautiful couples in the world. No wonder Carrie Patterson Photography captures utter gorgeousness every time she clicks her shutter. This wedding is no exception to the beauty rule of Jackson Hole, but on top of the stunning, there is so much heart and laughter, I simply cannot force myself to leave the pretty, pretty gallery!

Tim and I probably crossed paths long before we actually met.  We both went to the same college but never met while we were there.  Years later we were set up by mutual friends in New York who happened to be getting married in Jackson Hole shortly after we started dating.  Little did we know at the time but many of the same guests would be headed back to Jackson for our wedding just a few years later.

I grew up in Jackson Hole and Tim may love Jackson even more than I do so there was no question where we were going to get married.  We also wanted to share with our friends the outdoors and western hospitality that we love.  Our ceremony was held in a small chapel in Grand Teton National Park where my parents were married.  I think my favorite memory of the entire day is walking up the steps to the church and seeing Tim looking at me from the end of the aisle.  Carrie Patterson, our photographer, took a great picture of this moment.  We had our reception in the backyard of my parents’ home.  The weather was perfect so we were able to have the cocktail hour outside as the sun was setting over the mountains.

As the evening got cooler we gave out pink pashminas to all the ladies and had Too Haute Cowgirls popcorn (so delicious!) sent home for the guys.  It could not have been a more perfect day for us.

My husband and I met six years ago on April Fool’s Day. He had just left a blind date and I was out with a girlfriend celebrating her birthday. My eye caught his gold-buttoned blue blazer and his my smile. Over the next three years, we dated, traveled and enjoyed our life together. During the week of Thanksgiving 2008, we vacationed in Florence, Bruges and Paris on our first whirlwind European adventure. On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Chris hired an undercover professional photographer to follow us around the enchanting streets of Bruges in an effort to capture each moment leading up to and during the proposal. On bended knee on the city square, he asked me to marry him and then subtly pointed out our secret follower.

The decision to get married in Jackson Hole was an easy and an obvious choice. We refer to our 2006 encounter with Jackson Hole as our first grown-up vacation and it was simply love at first visit. Our families and friends live all across the country and Jackson Hole became not only the wedding location, but also an endless source of inspiration during our planning process. Once engaged, we visited JH and finalized our plans with a powerhouse list of vendors. Carrie Patterson topped the list with her breathtaking photography and endless guidance to ensure our wedding was the perfect balance of beauty and entertainment.

Inspiration for the style of the wedding played homage to a comfortable weekend getaway with our closest friends and family. Our primary goal was to ensure that each of our guests had the opportunity to fall in love with Jackson Hole, just as we did. From each detail from our save-the-date postcards with Wild West old time photos to line dancing to The Devil Went Down to Georgia, we hoped to indulge our guests with a relaxed western experience. Two weeks prior to the wedding, we mailed a custom stamped local map along with a detailed itinerary of the weekend’s events. Thursday we met as a group for Snake River Lagers and Friday’s rehearsal dinner took each of our guests up the Bridger Gondola for cocktail hour and then back to Nick Wilson’s Cowboy Bar for BBQ, dancing and a photo booth.

The day of the wedding was pure magic. I spent quality time with my sisters and two best friends and while getting ready, I experienced a tremendous, indescribable closeness with my mother. Chris and I had a “first look” with our bridal party and I remember a quiet excitement that rushed over me as I took those last steps towards him. The moment he turned around and looked at me was one of the most special moments in my life. During the entire day, I felt so absolutely beautiful and loved and Carrie captured that exact essence in each of her photographs.

Carrie’s photography of our wedding tells a story of love and life and happiness. There are moments caught on film that were easily and unintentionally overlooked. Her ability to seek out an oasis of emotional purity is unlike any other photographer I have ever encountered. She loves her art so much and it shows in each smile and tear and glance.

Bonfires and gorgeous tulle gowns, pine trees and peonies; it’s combinations like these that completely redefine the idea of rustic. AND it’s weddings like this gem that merry those rustic details with a gorgeous layer of elegance that fits right at home with the backdrop of Jackson Hole. From the Bride… Jackson Hole has been important to my family ever since my dad headed out west in 1969, at age 16, to work on a ranch as a cowhand. Over the years, he convinced the rest of us to love it as much as he does (it wasn’t hard!). Garrett and I first met during our freshman year of high school in Philadelphia. After being best friends for the first two years of high school, we finally dated for our junior and senior years. It was after our college graduation on a trip to Jackson Hole that we rekindled our romance. Since that time, Jackson has become our home away from home. Over the years, Garrett and I have enjoyed countless adventures there and could not think of a better place to start our life together.

Sharing Wyoming with our closest friends and family brought us so much joy. We knew that planning a wedding out west would be a logistical challenge because we live in New York City, and my parents live in Philadelphia, but we were determined to make it happen. It has been my dream to have a wedding at my parents’ home for years, so my mom, sisters and I worked together, and in the end, all of our ideas came together to make an event that felt personal, warm, and reflective of Garrett and me as a couple. Even my dad chipped in to the design by creating that awesome sign post and our Just Hitched signs! Our wedding weekend was everything we imagined it could be, and most of all it was about family, friendship and the authenticity of young love.

From Leslee Mitchell Jennifer and Jonathan’s wedding was a celebration encompassing the many things they cherish about their beloved Jackson Hole. Their laid back, adventurous souls and love for their community was evident in the planning of what their wedding day would include. The ceremony took place atop Snow King Mountain, overlooking the gorgeous Teton Mountains. Guests took the ski lift up the mountain to the ceremony location and rode the alpine slide back down the mountain when the ceremony was over.

Jennifer and Jonathan made their way back down the mountain on a ski lift decorated with a Just Married banner Jennifer made from old quilt patches, card board, ribbons and twine. Once they arrived at the bottom of Snow King, they hopped on their custom cruiser bikes and headed for a victory ride around Jackson Hole Town Square along with several guests who had arrived by bike to the wedding. Owners of Grizzly Country Wildlife Adventures, Jennifer and Jonathan knew some of the most spectacular spots for their day after portraits.

Jackson Hole Wedding by Carrie Patterson Photography

When we first discovered (and promptly fell in love with) Carrie Patterson it was through the photographs of what remains to be one of SMP’s most beloved weddings. It was a wedding that pretty much convinced me that Jackson Hole is one of the most beautiful places on earth and just happens to provide one of the most stunning backdrops for ANY wedding, no matter what the style may be. So when we found ourselves staring at yet another Jackson Hole beaut, well we knew we couldn’t keep this one to ourselves. It’s the epitome of laid back gorgeousness with details that are as effortless as they are stunning. So without further ado…(oh and don’t forget to click on the gallery to see even more)…

From the Bride…I wanted the wedding day to be pretty and romantic and at the same time reflect something significant about the life David and I have together.  So I chose a color scheme that came to me one morning while hiking up Glory Mountain with David to squeeze in some backcountry skiing before work.  As the sun came up over the mountains it cast an incredible peach glow across the snow and threw every boot print into an equally stunning bluish shadow.  Even though our wedding would be in the heat of summer, these elegant muted colors seemed to fit our quiet characters perfectly. I designed the invitations, programs, and menus in these colors, reinforcing the natural theme with motifs of mountain ridges and soaring eagles. On the wedding day, Sarajane, from Lily and Co., flawlessly interpreted the flower images I brought to her.  The soft peach garden roses from a local grower were the highlight against the delicate blue flowers and berries.

We decided to hold the ceremony in a small log cabin chapel at the northern end of Grand Teton National Park.  The setting was perfectly quaint and rustic.  Adding to the spiritual feeling of the day were moose and bear visitors that greeted us from afar as we drove to and from the ceremony location.  The reception at Jackson Hole Golf and Tennis was unparalleled because it offered our guests – many from out-of-town – a spectacular view of the mountains at sunset.  The band lit up the dance floor with a series of country western favorites, to which our guests happily practiced the western swing moves they had learned at the rehearsal dinner.

To add some significant family touches to the occasion, my mother and I baked up special sugar cookie favors from an old family recipe using the cookie cutters my great-grandfather made over 100 years ago.  The pearl necklace I wore was my great-grandmother’s. Instead of table numbers, I drew local animals and placed them in frames at each table.  For escort cards, I painted guests’ names on river rocks which I had collected from the dike along the Snake River.  This is where David and I had our first date and where he asked me to marry him.  Every element of the wedding reflected us as a couple, the histories and inheritance which we carry into our future lives together, and the Jackson Hole area where we met and fell in love.

We really wanted the wedding to be laid back and comfortable for everyone.  We envisioned a big vacation for everyone with a big party at the end.  We invited the guests (just close friends and family, total of 30) to come a week early so we could visit and enjoy the outdoors (fishing, hiking, rafting, etc.).  We kept it simple and focused on the beauty of Jackson Hole, it’s our favorite place in the world and we wanted everyone we love to share it with us.

For the ceremony, I wanted to have the perfect view of the Tetons and I scouted so many different ranches for the right spot.  I wanted to say our vows outside with the mountains surrounding us.  We had a tent set up in case it rained (thankfully, it didn’t), bar, and appetizers.  Overall, I went for a sort of mountain chic vibe.  I wanted it to be simple, natural, and elegant.  The Amangani was exactly what I had in mind…modern but a bit rustic.  It was a great contrast to the Lost Creek Ranch, which was pretty rugged (it’s a working horse ranch).  It was a little unconventional, but we like to break some traditions.

I was happy with everything, but of course, there were things that didn’t go perfectly.  If I could go back and change anything, it would be to try to slow down, enjoy every minute of that day, and just focus on my husband!!

Cowboy Themed Rehearsal Dinner by Jessica Claire

My favorite sorts of gatherings are the ones that truly reflect a couple’s personality, that play homage to their roots, and ones that allow a girl to throw on a pair of cowboy boots and kick up her heels. So of course, the country girl in me is dancing and twirling at the sight of this good ol’ ranch rehearsal dinner. Jessica Claire and her wondrous photography were at play behind the scenes to bring you every last stinkin cute detail. I mean, they seriously thought of everything when it came to this Jackson Hole, Wyoming hoedown. Fire-pits, s’mores, a bluegrass band….sounds fun, right? See the rest of the party here!

See the full rehearsal shebang in the gallery!

From Jessica Claire:

Katie & Dave’s wedding took place this weekend on her father’s ranch, and what better way to kick off the weekend than with a good old fashioned hoedown at Q’s Roadhouse BBQ joint?!

The mother of the groom, Claudia Merritt, left no stone unturned in planning this adorable event! From the bold flowers in jars wrapped in leather and twine, to the photo booth with both cowboy/cowgirl and bordello props, it was absolute perfection. There was even a square dance and a bluegrass band!

The little touches such as horseshoes, a smores bar, and fire pits covered in animal printed blankets made this a wonderfully fun evening for all the guests!
