From the bride… There might be nothing more cliche than a guy and a girl meeting in a bar, but Brandon and Tessa wouldn’t have it any other way. Tessa had moved back home to Chicago in 2011 after a stint living in Argentina and decided to waitress for awhile before making her next move. An ordinary football Sunday turned into one of the most important days of her life, when she was finally introduced to that cute boy from down the street who always came in to have a drink or dinner with his friends. After years of dating in Chicago, Brandon proposed to Tessa on their fourth anniversary after a romantic dinner and drinks overlooking Chicago’s skyline. He designed her engagement ring with the help of one of their mutual friends, incorporating the center stone from her mother’s engagement ring.

The wedding location was easy. Tessa’s father’s home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin was a natural choice — the 300 acre, former farm was always the site of family gatherings and occasions, previously hosting two other family weddings. The lush greenery and tranquil lake was perfect for a rustic, yet elegant wedding. Tessa and Brandon both love personal touches at weddings, and focused on making their wedding unique and special to them.

Little did they know how memorable their wedding would be. After some early morning rain, the sky had cleared to reveal a cloudless, sunny day — perfect for an outdoor ceremony overlooking the lake. About 15 minutes into the ceremony, with Brandon in the middle of his vows, a singular cloud provided a sudden summer storm, bringing the wedding to a brief intermission while guests took shelter under the veranda and the bridal party ducked into the nearby garage. After the brief storm passed, the couple resumed the ceremony outside, only to have it produce a stunning pink sunset.

The bridesmaids wore a mix of blush and sage dresses in different styles, while the groomsmen sported grey, custom suits. The bride chose a lace Anna Meir gown from a boutique in Chicago and the groom wore a navy Banana Republic suit. Guests were then led to a tented reception. When they searched for their place at dinner, place cards indicated the name of a restaurant that was meaningful over the time of Brandon and Tessa’s relationship, including the name of the bar where they met.

This Classic Meets Romantic Affair is the Definition of Pretty

Saying “I do” in classic fashion is never a bad thing, and when these two sweeties tied the knot in their traditional meets romantic affair, it was everything you want your wedding day to be. Think gorgeous details, a beautiful locale and moment after moment of HAPPY. Oh, and the bride’s amazing hair? It’s beyond. See it all captured perfectly by the talented Kristina Lorraine in THE VAULT.

From the Bride… It all began on a hot and humid day back in July 2012, fittingly, at a Chicago street fest a few beers deep. It started innocently enough, Kurt’s friend knew mine, which started the introductions. This led to an afternoon of a few awkward flirtations and a whole lot of Bud Light. Kurt claims that he had asked for my number that day, but this part of the story is still a little hazy. It took three months and the magic of Facebook to reunite us (we’re a shy duo).

We had our first date at a romantic local establishment (Kirkwood in Lincoln Park), and again keeping with the theme, learned more about each other over a few adult beverages. The next few years were spent meeting each other’s wonderful friends and family (Kurt was welcomed with party hats and boas and thankfully my introduction was a lot more tame), a few weekend getaways, moving in together to our cozy Roscoe apartment, and a little bit of heartache. All of which showed us that we can pretty much handle anything that is thrown our way. Our story shows that love can be found at any corner even when you least expect it. Even the corner of Lincoln and Montana!

Our wedding vibe can be described in three words: light, romantic and antique-y. This made the most sense due to our casual venue and our laid-back personalities. We went to a countless number of good will stores and a few antique rental spots to make our look complete! Our theme for the wedding was “love” (unique right??) which we were able to incorporate all over our venue. Starting from the drink we loved, to Polaroids of the people we loved (in lieu of a guest book), to centerpieces with displays of Kurt and my favorite things. It really turned out to be a perfect day of love!!

A Classic New Year’s Eve Wedding that Defines Glamour

Beaded bridesmaids’ dresses, faux fur shrugs, golden hour lighting and a sparkler exit — does it get any more glam than that? Combine those elements with a New Year’s Eve wedding date, and you have all the makings of the most glamorous wedding possible. Fall in love with every moment of this gorgeous day, thanks to lovely photos from Carly McCray Photography, in The Vault!

From Carly McCray PhotographyYou may remember Lindsay + Jake’s adorable Wisconsin engagement session (featured on SMP last summer!), when they visited my neck of the woods — the pine forests of Central Wisconsin — from where they call home in Chicago.

They welcomed the new year in style during a quiet evening ceremony at the Grand Geneva Resort on a snowy night, after years of a long-distance relationship between Minnesota and Chicago, and a secret bridge proposal with all of their friends watching.

All of their friends joined them in their NYE celebration, adorned in a soft palette of grays, blush BHLDN bridesmaids dresses, soft greens and gold tones. Sparks flew at a sparkler exit for the books, and the night wouldn’t be completely with, of course, a New Year’s countdown + celebrating late into the night!

Romantic Lake Geneva Summer Wedding

These two cuties met at law school, and as photographer Heather Cook Elliott noted, you may think that predicts a serious nature between them – and you’d be so wrong. Laughter and smiles spill out of every one of Cook’s photos from their summer celebration planned by Lola Event Productions. And with Toast & Jam behind the music, it was a good time from start to finish – join me in the VAULT to see it all!

From Heather Cook Elliott Photography… Jessie and Austin met in law school, a start to their story that suggests they might be a rather serious couple when in fact the opposite is true. They are fun and funny and manage to make being incredibly stylish look really easy. I think their wedding style says a lot about who they are in their everyday lives and they are the kind of people I love to photograph: they approached their wedding with a sort of no-fuss attitude mixed with boho charm made elegant by the fact they they are, well, really put together people (they are lawyers, after all.) Lake Geneva held up it’s end of the deal too, offering their combined out-of-state and Wisconsin friends and families a delightful place to relax and unwind on a late summer weekend. I love that they married lakeside at the classic Lake Geneva resort that is The Abbey, and followed the “I do’s” up with the first of two cocktail hours (2!) before heading to the stunningly beautiful Yerkes Observatory (and a University of Chicago institution) for bridal party fun. Then the always lovely Riviera Ballroom played host to cocktail hour number 2 and dinner plus a riotous dance party made possible by Chicago area favorite Toast & Jam. And finally I love that Jessie and Austin enjoyed every second of it – enjoyed the tiny moments together and the big moments in front of everyone, the heartfelt hugs and the rousing toasts – every second of everything.

Romantic Lake Geneva Wedding in Wisconsin

From the Bride’s vintage veil to the puppy place cards, this lakeside affair is bursting with heartfelt details. Romantic and sophisticated, Kristina Lorraine Photography captured every detail and it’s waiting for you here!

From the beautiful Bride… Growing up, my family had fond memories of trips to Lake Geneva; we knew it would be the perfect wedding destination to share with our closest family and friends. After choosing our venue, we learned that Brian’s parents honeymooned at the very same resort. It was truly meant to be!

When Brian and I started to plan our wedding, we wanted to keep the weekend intimate and personal. We set out to include as much of what and who we loved as possible. I chose to walk down the aisle on our wedding day wearing my mother’s veil (the same veil she wore 32 years earlier), along with my maternal grandmother and great-grandmother’s jewelry. We were also fortunate to have our only living grandparent in attendance at the wedding, where we celebrated her 83rd birthday and served her famous cookies along with the family recipe.

Not only were we able to incorporate these relatives, but also our favorite furry family member – our dog, Penny. Penny was instrumental in Brian’s proposal and although she did not attend the wedding, she made an appearance in the form of Penny-shaped place cards.

To make this event even more special (or as Brian says ‘one helluva party’), we enlisted some spectacular vendors. Our unique venue, the Grand Geneva Mountain Top Ski Chalet, was transformed with the most beautiful spring flowers created by Frontier Flowers of Fontana. While flowers bloomed outside, they also hung throughout the venue to create the intimate party we’d dreamed of. The additional decor we selected helped us pull together an elegant and classic environment for our celebration and our band, Soda, kept the dance floor packed all night long!

We feel blessed that we can say we had our perfect wedding. We couldn’t have asked for anything more – thanks mom and dad!

NFL Player & Amazing Race Contestant Tie the Knot

Black tie with a glittery twist, this glammed-up fête from Kristina Lorraine lands in touchdown territory. You may recognize the tuxedo clad groom, Green Bay Packer’s player Brett Goode and groomsman Aaron Rogers, but all eyes were on his Amazing Race bride, Monica Cayce. Planned in less than a month (you read right!) every detail from the cocktail cruise to the lush Frontier Flowers of Fontana, make the gallery a truly perfect place to be.

From the beautiful Bride… I knew I had a huge task at hand when my fiance (Brett Goode, long snapper for the Green Bay Packers), and I decided to get married on his by-week, less than a month away from our engagement.

We chose the idyllic destination of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, about 2.5 hours away from Green Bay. I knew I would need quite a bit of help to pull this off, but I was up for the challenge. I enlisted the help of florist, and wedding genius, Renee Cerny of Frontier Flowers of Fontana. Using a mix of blush, sage green, metallics, soft neutrals, and modern and rustic elements, she tied in our Arkansas roots. There were also unique touches like chic antlers mixed in with hanging amaranths and lush flowers. It was also very important for me to incorporate a lot of rose gold elements to pay homage to my engagement ring.

We kept the wedding small and intimate, with only close friends and family being in attendance. Our ceremony was perched lake side in a gorgeous Sperry tent at Abbey Spring Yacht Club in Fontana. It was then transformed into the reception space, while the guests enjoyed a sunset cruise on a gorgeous, classic, steam yacht, from the Lake Geneva Cruise Line. We wanted our guests to have a fun getaway, and share in our love for one another and our friends and family.

From the bride…Rory and I decided that the most important goal of our wedding was to create an amazing celebration for our family and friends to dance the night away! We LOVE music, and our relationship started by going to music festivals and to see our favorite bands together. We wanted to create the feeling you get seeing your favorite band at our wedding reception and for everyone to feel like part of the festivities. The day of the wedding was chilly for the end of July, but in the end it was perfect for dancing with the doors open, providing natural air conditioning for our dance party.

We got engaged at Yerkes Observatory, and we thought the building was too beautiful to not return to take pictures the day of the wedding. Ideally, we would have gotten married there, but they do not allow receptions to take place on the grounds. We wanted to make sure the ceremony and reception took place in one location, and when we found Horticultural Hall, I knew it was perfect. The courtyard felt like a lush secret garden and created a lovely intimate ceremony space. The additional contributions from family and friends, like my mom & sister making the place card/plant tags and my reception sash, my friend Kaitlin making “Smores Pops” for everyone, and Rory and I making little details for the guest tables, using my mom’s antique bottle collection for budvases on tables, my friends at The Flower Firm making my gorgeous floral designs, it all made the whole day feel like a giant hug!

From Carly McCray Photography… Melanie + Chris’ warm, Wisconsin fall wedding in Lake Geneva was one part nautical-goodness mixed with about three parts Wisconsin fall colors, abundant rustic elegance and a ski chalet with the most beautiful wood beams!

Living near Washington D.C., Melanie and Chris chose Melanie’s hometown of Lake Geneva as their perfect Wisconsin fall day wedding backdrop. They exchanged their ‘I dos’ in Melanie’s childhood church…where she wore her mother’s long, gorgeous veil…and celebrated that night where she spent many chilly winters skiing at the Grand Geneva Mountain Top Ski Chalet! They filled the day with their own handmade touches including save the dates with a custom Wisconsin print, handmade wooden table numbers, rustic wood signs, pennants, take-home mason jar favors, chalkboard signs, and more.

Tables overflowed with fall pears nestled in silver vessels and full fall arrangements, and were surrounded with rustic wood chairs and golden afternoon sunset light bouncing off the beams + red brick floor! Lovers of good food and beer, Melanie + Chris incorporated this into their dinner menu of three favorite dishes paired with three favorite beers! Their puppies even came along for portraits, two girls appropriately named Barley and Hops.

Lake Geneva Wedding from Jacqui Cole Photography

If you need a little something to put the pretty in your Friday, you’ve come to the right place. Because this wedding from Jacqui Cole Photography is simply as lovely as they come. With gorgeous florals from Frontier Flowers – Fontana, a color palette to die for, and one stunning couple – it’s the perfect way to ease into the weekend in style. See it all here.

From the Bride… Throughout our five years of being together, David and I have faced many obstacles along the way. Many of these obstacles stood in the way of us moving forward with our lives and ultimately tying the knot. When May 25th finally came I knew nothing could get in the way of what we had waited so long for. For a colder than average May day, the clouds and cool weather made for the most romantic setting. We loved our lakeside ceremony that was personalized just for us, our flowers that had a vintage spring feel and our spectacular tower of cupcakes that were a big hit. Most of all we loved the moments we had alone together that no one else could feel what we were feeling. Our family and friends were there when we read our personalized vows and our first dance was just magical. But when we saw each other for the first time by the beautiful lake, those are our moments and memories alone together. It was about David and me and our journey together. Realizing in those exact moments that everything that lead us to this particular day had all been worth the wait.

Lake Geneva Wedding from m three studio

This wedding gives me a serious case of the warm fuzzies. I can’t pinpoint exactly what about it is so special, but in my vast experience as a wedding blogger, I’ve come to learn that usually means the whole affair is the special part. Everything from the flowers to the setting to the laughter and love is extra heartwarming, especially when captured by m three studio. Molly always knows how to capture the essence of the warm and fuzzies, which is why this gallery is one of my favorites!

From the beautiful bride … Mike and I first met in junior high, but it wasn’t until our mid 20’s that we reconnected and started dating. Unfortunately, shortly after we started dating, Mike was relocated to Milwaukee, which was about an hour and a half away from the suburb of Chicago where I lived. We continued dating long distance, only seeing each other on the weekends, but after quite some time, we decided that we wanted to be together every day and started searching for our first home in a suburb of Milwaukee. Mike proposed to me on the fifth anniversary of our first date, with a surprise, romantic dinner in the home we had built together. Getting married was an easy decision for Mike and I. We already felt married and we knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. Having a wedding?! Now that was a different story!

Mike and I were thrilled about hosting a party for all of our favorite people, but we did not even know where to start. We knew we liked the idea of a destination wedding and spending the whole weekend with our closest friends and family; however, we wanted it to be within driving distance for everyone. We decided that the Grande Geneva Resort in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, would be the perfect location. The Grand Geneva Resort was a very special place to Mike and I and we knew the Mountain Top Chalet would serve as the perfect backdrop to our non-traditional wedding ceremony and reception.

Once we had the date and location, choosing our vendors was surprisingly easy. We were able to book our dream photographer, Molly Michel of m three studio. Molly was able to recommended our DJ, Sound by Design. With the Grand Geneva taking care of the catering, bartending and cake, the only thing left to book was our florist.

My mom and I planned to spend a girls weekend, meeting with several florists in the Lake Geneva area. Luckily, our first appointment was with Renee Cerny, owner for Frontier Flowers of Fontana. Renee seemed to completely grasp the floral design I had created in my head and didn’t squirm when I said that I did not want traditional flowers, but more textural elements, including artichokes and lotus pods. After we left our meeting with Renee, we cancelled all of our other appointments because I knew she was going to be the one to bring my vision to life!

Now came the little details, which was the fun part! My mom and I were able to spend so much time together, from researching lanterns to working with an graphic designer to custom design our invitations and name cards. My Dad built the flower boxes for the centerpieces and I hand made our table numbers. My mom decorated 100 jars that held the candles that lined the stairs and outdoor patio. All of these personal touches made the wedding that much more special to Mike and I. Walking into the ceremony and seeing everyone’s hard work come together, took my breath away. It was far more beautiful than what I had pictured it in my mind.

Most importantly, Mike and I wanted our wedding to be a celebration of love and life, among our closest family and friends. When we talk about our favorite part of our wedding (besides all of the laughing, drinking and dancing, of course), we both agree that it was when our officiate addressed our guests and reminded them that they were all an irreplaceable part our yesterdays, our today and our tomorrows. Our hope was that they would know it was through all of their unconditional love and support, that this unforgettable day had become a reality.

Lake Geneva Engagement Session from Kate Romenesko Photography

This Lake Geneva e-session from Kate Romenesko Photography is too sweet for words. The Chicago-based couple made a trip back to the lovely spot where the soon-to-be-bride grew up and where her handsome fiancé spent summers for a shoot filled with gorgeous light and lots of LOVE. Be sure to see the rest of this little beauty right here!

From the Kate Romenesko Photography… Although Danielle and Sean currently live in Chicago, they chose to capture their love in the beautiful Lake Geneva area where Sean spent summers at his family’s lake home and where Danielle was raised. They chose two stunning locations for their engagement session that perfectly reflect each of their personalities. The afternoon began at the wonderfully unique Northwind Perennial Farm where we found plenty of natural beauty in the surroundings and even an old grand piano in the woods – an amazing find! Northwind perfectly captured Danielle’s rustic side and memories of her own family’s farm. Afterwards, we moved to the lake, a perfect compliment to Sean’s personality and a reminder of many special summers. The beautiful sunset, gorgeous surroundings, and an unusually warm winter day made for the perfect setting to capture Danielle and Sean’s magical love.

Lake Geneva Wedding from Christy Tyler Photography

As much as I’m loving this preppy lakefront wedding from Christy Tyler Photography, I’m seriously smitten with the story behind it! This couple was married in the garden of the bride’s parent’s house in Lake Geneva; the same garden where they were engaged, where her parents were married and where her brother and his fiancé will be married later this summer!  Be ready to spend the rest of your morning parsing the full gallery!

Click here for the FULL wedding!

From the Bride… Although our motto throughout the wedding planning process was “the wedding is just one day, the marriage is the rest of our lives,” we knew we wanted that one day to be special. Our ceremony was held in the garden of my family’s lake house in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, a place that is special to us for a host of reasons: the home has been in my family for five generations, my parents were married in the same garden, my brother and his fiancé will be getting married there later this summer, and it is where my now-husband proposed. We were very excited about sharing this special place with our friends and family — we wanted to give our guests a real taste of Lake Geneva, so they arrived at the ceremony site by boat!

Our goal was to create a feel of casual elegance on our wedding day. We wanted to make sure our guests felt comfortable and tried to create that feeling by incorporating personal touches throughout: My husband and his dad built the arbor that we were married under, we created a family tree with wedding pictures of family members over the years and put our flowers in pitchers to remind us to “serve one another in love” (Galatians 5:13).  We also wrote personalized notes in each place card for our guests, thanking them for being a part of our wedding day.

My husband and I were blessed with an amazing wedding day and are ready for a lifetime of happiness!

Fun, Charming, Completely Whimsical Wedding

I am on a whimsical kick today…featuring affairs that don’t take themselves too seriously, that are filled to the brim with spirit, spunk and charm. So when Jeremy Lawson sent me this particular soiree early today, you know I scrambled to get it right up! It’s absolutely adorable and anyone who is looking to have a little fun with their wedding will seriously fall in love…

jeremy lawson

The wedding was held in the bride’s backyard at her parents house on Lake Geneva. Even Jeremy said that there were so many details, he felt like he was on a scavenger hunt. I love that! And to be honest, any bride that serves fries at their wedding is A-OK in my gook!

jeremy lawson

And I la la looooove that guests threw colorful confetti as the bride and groom made their way out. SUCH a cute little gesture of celebration. There are so many elements of this wedding that remind me of a birthday party and the confetti is one of the best. I love the pure and honest nature of the design, the spunky approach to wedding planning and the all out personality that just shines through every image. Jeremy did such a great job at capturing the day!
