Classic Washington DC Hotel Wedding

Remember that adorable #StyleMeBlooper photo we shared last week? Well, this ladies and gentlemen, is the real wedding behind it. And it just happens to be my beautiful sister-in-law, Jessica. Who I met when she was 17 years old, desperate to get out of the house to go hang out with her friends. Fast forward over a decade and here she is. The most beautiful, kind, lovely person I know who married one of the most handsome, gracious, funny guys I’ve ever met. Set in the beautiful Hay Adams Hotel, it’s everything you love about a classic ballroom fête with no shortage of fun little moments planned by Karson Butler EventsJustine Ungaro snapped the photos, Josh Gooden filmed the day and that bride made even more stunning by Amie Decker Beauty? Oh and there is so much more right here!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/115944269 600 338]

From the Bride… It was a gorgeous day filled with the love of our friends and family, many of whom took part in the festivities to make every moment uniquely special. The laughter and tears of our nieces and nephews kicked off the day as they ran down the aisle as flower girls and a ring bearer. Our good friend gave us the gift of music as he shared his outstanding musical talent on the piano. He played his own personal rendition of mixing Cannon in D and Sweet Child of Mine by Guns and Roses as I walked down the aisle with my dad. Right before my dad and I stepped onto the aisle, he recognized the rock song playing on the piano and he said, “Oh, that’s cool,” bringing a huge smile to my face knowing he was by my side.

My husband and I were lucky enough to have our dear friend travel from Cambodia to officiate our wedding, bringing jubilance and serenity to the day. To add to the wonderful moments of the ceremony, both my brothers and my godson spoke during the wedding bringing tears to my eyes as they provided my husband and me with advice and blessings for a lifetime of happiness. Once my husband and I shared our own vows, we danced down the aisle to the music of Sweet Caroline – a hometown favorite – as our friends showered us with bubbles.

After the ceremony my husband and I enjoyed laughing and dancing in front of the White House as our good friend Justine Ungaro took incredible photos to capture our happiness. All of our friends and family watched from the rooftop of the Hay Adams Hotel as we danced into our first few moments as Mr. and Mrs.

When my husband and I joined the party on the rooftop of the Hay Adams I was once again reminded that I married my best friend. We entered the room wearing leather jackets and goofy sunglasses, jamming to a Mayer Hawthorne song called, Her Favorite Song. During our first dance (Donovan Frankenrieter – Dance like nobody is watching) my husband surprised the crowd by ripping off his coat to reveal a giant eagle stitched into his tuxedo shirt, while I ripped off the tulle skirt of my wedding dress to wear a white cocktail dress. My husband and I giggled as we kicked off the night of dancing.

During the reception we were showered with love from our sisters – the Matron of Honor and the Best Woman – as they gave touching speeches that made us burst into tears and laughter. We would not be the people we are today without them.

The day would not have been complete without the support of my husband’s Marine Corp buddies. That evening they gathered together to welcome me into the family. Unbeknownst to me, they coordinated my surprise “promotion” to the Wife of a Marine, with my father-in-law (a proud Marine) leading the service as all of the Marines stood at the position of attention, a few of them wobbling. I was in awe that I was in the presence of such remarkable men.

I will never forget my last dance with my sister and mom. With them in my life I know I will always have best friends to carry me through.

As I danced with my mom and sister, I saw my husband boogieing with his mama – nothing but smiles – and I realized how lucky I am to be part of so many wonderful families.

I am blessed to have Abby Larson as my fabulous sister-in-law who made the whole day happen. Let’s just say, I kind of had an unfair advantage :)

From The Bride…Mike and I met in college junior year, and after 5 years of dating long distance, I finally made the move from New York City to Washington, DC. When it came time to pick a location, we knew Washington, D.C. would be the perfect backdrop for our spring wedding. It is home for Mike and I, which made wedding planning easier, and was a great excuse for our guests to get away for a long weekend.

I have been dreaming of getting married since I was a little girl, and patiently waiting for Mike to propose, so when it finally happened – I had so many ideas! We wanted a classic black-tie feel, with a romantic, ethereal, and organic vibe. Bill from Edge Floral Event Design was wonderful and helped us bring this vision to life by using a ton of candles, white florals, and greenery in the decor.

When it came to the wedding gown, I had my heart set on wearing Israeli designer Inbal Dror, and the team at Mark Ingram Atelier was so wonderful! Because the dress had a lot of detail on the neck line, and a sheer corset back, I wanted to keep my jewelry and veil very simple, and opted for a long tulle veil, which displayed the back detail of my dress. For shoes, I chose a classic gold Miu Miu heel, with an embellished heel. I loved these because they were so simple from the front, but sparkly from the back. I knew with a heel like these I would wear them again, and always think of our wedding day.

Mike and I had three priorities when planning our special day. First off, we wanted all of our guests and us, to have a ton of fun and let loose. This meant hiring an amazing band, which is why we brought Creations Music from New York to help us celebrate. Second, it was important to have a fantastic photographer to capture our special day. Bonnie Sen was a doll. She was so sweet, hands on when needed, and took such dreamy and ethereal pictures that captured our day perfectly! Lastly, we wanted to make sure we were both relaxed, and Christine Godsey from Elegant Affairs and Leigh Murdock from the Ritz Carlton, helped us to make sure our day ran smoothly.

For us, the cherry on top came from our videographer, Ryan Geldermann. Often times, people pass on a videographer for their wedding, but when I saw Ryan’s films I knew I had to have him!! Ryan and his wife, captured our day in the most special way, and literally made us feel (and look) like rock stars.

We had such a fun and incredible time surrounded by people we love, and couldn’t be more grateful for our beautiful day!

Classic & Romantic Washington D.C. Spring Wedding

The only thing I love more than a pretty wedding is a pretty wedding with personality. Take this sweet duo’s nuptials—yes, their wedding is beautiful with hair and makeup from Amie Decker Beauty and linens from La Tavola, but it’s also full of special touches, like the surprise Groom’s cake and handmade leis flown in from Hawaii. And that’s only the start. See it all from Abby Jiu Photography here.

From Abby Jiu PhotographyOur bride and groom put a lot of thought and effort into picking each and every aspect of the wedding. The bride was absolutely stunning with just the right mix of classic (how can you not love a red lip and finger waves?) in her Rosa Clara wedding dress and wore her mom’s headpiece over her veil. A. Dominick Events collaborated with Amaryllis, Fabrications and Frost Lighting to transform the Decatur House tent to a classic and timeless space for guests to enjoy dinner from Occasions Caterers. The mix of La Tavola linens and the DC Rental chairs created a comfortable and residential feel in the space.

There were so many personal touches and surprises from all sides – the bride surprised the groom with a bottle of Dom Perignon from the year he was born, the bride’s aunt flew handmade leis all the way from Hawaii, a surprise groom’s cake shaped like a bear wearing running shoes (a nod to the groom’s nickname and favorite hobby), a cigar and bourbon bar with the groom’s favorites and a dessert display with the bride’s favorite local pies to satisfy her extreme sweet tooth – each detail was the perfect compliment to this sweet couples personality and love for each other, their friends and family.

Romantic Multicultural St. Francis Monastery DC Wedding

This wedding is special: what began as a demure and pastel-filled romantic garden affair became a vibrant and glamorous party by night’s end, complete with an outfit change from the Bride into a traditional red qipao to honor her Taiwanese heritage. And with Dyanna Joy Photography behind the camera and Jewel Hair Design behind the Bride’s romantic ‘do , you know it was amazing. See it all here.

From the Bride… I was never a girl who had dreamed since childhood of what her wedding would look like and what her wedding had to have, so rather than wanting a certain look or style, we focused on what kind of environment we wanted for one of the most important days of our lives. We wanted a wedding that celebrated not just us, but our guests as well; something intimate and meaningful that made everyone feel special and loved.

We chose mainly soft pinks and greys, with touches of pastels and metallic gold and silver, and splashes of green and brown from natural elements. We wanted something simple, classic, soft, and a little bit rustic that would stand the test of time through our photographs, our videography, and most of all, our memories.

As Andrew and I are Taiwanese American, we wanted to include elements of our heritage within our wedding. Within each wedding invitation and menu, we included the traditional lucky wedding character, which literally translates to “double happiness”. We also worked with our caterers to include an Asian influence on the menu and to serve our guests bubble tea, a Taiwanese drink that Andrew and I and many of our guests love, as a surprise mid-evening treat. Each seating card was printed and decorated with washi-tape by me, which added a personal touch to each person’s card as the tape was strategically placed around each person’s name and none were exactly the same. The table number signs were photographs of us in some of our most special moments, chosen from thousands of photos amassed over the 7 years we have been together. I hand-cut each number out of glittery stock paper and pasted them on vellum paper molded and folded around the photographs so that they could easily be removed and we could hang up our framed photographs in the future as a mosaic of some of our favorite moments together — a wedding photo to be added later, of course! Each program was also designed and printed by me; they had a very simple yet cohesive look that tied into the aesthetic used for our wedding invitations. For our card box, we visited art stores to check out the selection of regular card boxes, but we were not drawn to any of them so we found a wonderfully rustic-looking birdcage. We dressed it up in silk flowers and ribbons to not only tie in our color theme and add a softer touch to it, but also to add some security to the cage so that no cards would fall out.

My favorite DIY project was our welcome sign, a mirror that we bought, spray-painted its frame gold, and, after three drafts sketched on paper and on the mirror itself, calligraphed and drawn on using paint markers. For the large decorative pieces, such as the table numbers signs, the card box, and the welcome sign, we thought about their uses and utility after the wedding before committing to buy them, which also helped us budget on how much we would spend on them. The table number signs could be hung up on walls in the future, the card box could house a few large LED pillar candles, and the mirror could be hung in the entryway of our future home together. For items we knew we would not use again, such as the seating cards and table signs for the wedding treats and guestbook, we budgeted lower for them.

My favorite moment of the whole day was standing with Andrew at the alter in front of all our friends and committing to our love together. In that moment I only saw and could only look at Andrew, though I knew our love was being celebrated with us with 100 of our closest family members and friends. As a naturally quiet person, I do not favor the spotlight and of all things to be nervous about during the wedding, I was worried about stage fright, but up there with him, all those worries simply melted away.

Going into my hunt for the right dress, I knew I wanted something classic that was not too trendy or too decorated and was not strapless. When I tried on my dress, it felt quite classy, very comfortable, and extremely “me” with its delicate lace top, cinch at the waist with a touch of sparkle, and full tulle skirt, but when I saw the grand chapel-length train behind me, I knew that this dress was the one I wanted to wear. Once I committed to the dress, I never wavered or lusted any other dress. It wasn’t until my second fitting, about one month before the wedding, that I decided to give a nod to my Taiwanese-American background and don a second dress during the reception, a traditional red qipao that Taiwanese brides typically wear.  My red dress contained the typical traditional elements such as the mandarin collar, cap-sleeves, form-fitting silhouette, and of course, the vibrant red color, but also fused it with beautiful, modern elements, such as lux and heavy underlying fabric with a beautiful lace overlay, rather than the traditional satin brocade, golden threads and beads, and my favorite, a small mermaid train. As a girl who loves having two of everything, these two dresses made me feel like I had the best of both worlds, not only in dress silhouettes but also in honoring both my American and Taiwanese roots.

I don’t know much about flowers, so my flowers were only dictated by color — light pink with touches of white and dusty mint green leaves for me and more vibrant pinks for the bridal party, and the rest was up to our talented florist. For our centerpieces, our florist followed the same rules and since I loved the look of tall arrangements at my venue, we included tall and low centerpieces with the same flowers on every other table.

The first thing that Andrew ever made me was mint-swirled chocolate cookies because I absolutely love mint chocolate flavored anything. These cookies are thin, but soft and slightly fudgy, with a refreshingly cool Andes mint layer on the top. For our wedding favors, Andrew made 250 cookies (approximately 2 cookies per guest) from scratch in the days before our wedding, pouring a lot of love and effort into those cookies. As one of my favorite treats ever, I hope that my guests enjoyed them!

During the cake tasting, our fantastic vendor walked us through a myriad of different cake flavor combinations, but we decided on 2 wonderfully different flavors: a fresh fruity flavor and a sweet, guilty-pleasure flavor. The top two layers of our three tier cake were white cake with passion fruit curd and strawberry Italian meringue buttercream. The lowest layer was something called the “candy bar cake”: white cake filled with salted caramel, dark ganache, vanilla Italian meringue buttercream, and chocolate crunchies. Both Andrew and I ate slices of each at the wedding and they were delicious!

Planning a wedding is definitely very hard. At times, it can be overwhelming, but don’t give up! Every little detail and you spend hours over and every stressful decision you make will pull together a wonderful event that will definitely be noticed by your friends and family. Things will probably go wrong on the day of, but don’t despair — you have wonderful friends and family there to celebrate with you and your husband and that’s all that matters in the end.

From Dyanna Joy PhotographyIt didn’t take long for Jamie and Andrew to fall in love; about one week. They met during college, and soon after their first encounter, Andrew asked Jamie if she would be his girlfriend, and Jamie confidently said yes. They have been together ever since.

Jamie and Andrew’s Washington, DC Monastery wedding was a dream to photograph. I loved everything about their style; Jamie’s couture Mori Lee wedding dress and cathedral veil, the combination of pink roses and wildflowers, the gorgeous columns at DC’s St. Francis Monastery, bubble tea, a red dress, and a grand exit.

Simply Breathe Events did an outstanding job and the wedding day was flawless. From the thousands of twinkling lights, colorful name cards, a white and pink cake topped with roses, and pink linens, the day was perfectly bewitching.

At the reception, guests enjoyed Bubble Tea. Also known as “pearl milk tea,” bubble tea contains a tea based mixed/shaken with fruit or milk, to which chewy tapioca balls and/or fruit jellies are often added. The “bubble” refers to the foam created by shaking the tea, which makes it foamy. It was absolutely delicious.

Halfway though the reception, Jamie changed into a traditional asian red wedding dress. We ended the evening with dancing, night photos, and a sparkler exit.

Elegant Washington, D.C. Anniversary Session

Anniversary sessions just might be my favorite. They prove that you should never stop celebrating that amazing day you walked down the aisle. And when we get to see a session like this one from Bonnie Sen and Floral and Bloom unfold, we count our lucky stars. Liz Fogarty stepped out from behind the camera to cozy up with her super cute beau, and the result is a collection of images I am sure they will treasure forever.

From Bonnie SenLiz is a a wonderful local photographer in the DC/MD/VA area, and her firefighter husband Gavin is one of her biggest fans. Since they didn’t have any engagement photos and their 3-year anniversary was coming up we came up with the idea of doing an anniversary session with lots of details to celebrate this milestone. As a photographer, I love working with other photographers because they totally understand the importance of location, lighting and details. Gavin rented a white tux, Liz got a new dress and some of her “fren-dendors” (Friend-Vendors) were hired to help with the details. The colors of blush, white and gold fit their brand and style. The locations were all monuments in DC. Starting at the DC World War 1 Memorial we found it was just the right size for a couples shoot like this. Later we walked across the street to the Martin Luther King Memorial for a sunset view of the Jefferson and Washington Monuments. We are so spoiled here in DC!

Meridian Hill Park Engagement Session

This gorgeous couple didn’t have to go far to find the perfect place for their engagement session. Meridian Hill Park, right by their neighborhood was the perfect serene escape from the big city where they could relax, kick back and have some fun! Their connection was undeniable, and Angela Newton Roy captured every moment of their perfect day; see it all for yourself in the full gallery right here!

From Angela Newton RoyJody and Benji are the epitome of a fun-loving, perfectly matched couple. From the moment we met, I could tell how in sync they were with each other – from their sense of humor, to their love of family, good food, and fashion. I have often joked that Jody is my style twin (I love everything she wears, her taste… she’s flawless!), and I know their wedding this fall at Woodlawn Estate with Sweetface events will be the perfect mix of elegance, style, and have at its center their love for each other and their cherished family and friends!

From the beautiful Bride-to-be… Benji and I met in the spring of 2011. He was living with a good friend of mine so we often ended up seeing each other out at group outings. At first I thought he was too good looking to be real. But he was real and once we started talking I realized he wasn’t just super good looking, he was also a super nice human being. We found out pretty early on that we share the same loves and values – family, friends, music, adventure, travel and fashion. We also both share a weird sense of humor so we spent a lot of the next few years laughing both with and at each other.

Benji proposed on September 21st, 2015. I had just accepted a new job and my mom and sisters were in town for the weekend to celebrate. Benji told me he had to go out of town for work on Friday, but really he flew back to my hometown to ask my Dad if he could marry me. When he got back, after all of the celebrating, he asked me to marry him. It was just the two of us, at our place, really early in the morning. I had no make up on, I was grumpy, but when he got down on one knee I was overwhelmed with happiness and I still am.

We love our neighborhood. It is where we got engaged, live together, go out with friends and spend so much of our time so we knew it was the perfect reflection of us for our engagement photos. Meridian Hill Park is right next to us. There is so much beauty and green scenery that you don’t even feel like you are in a big city. Not only is it picturesque, it is the perfect place for us to get away, to be fun and silly and to just be ourselves.

Romantic Washington D.C. Meridian House Proposal

Grooms, take note: this is how you plan and pull off the perfect proposal. It has it all: an absolutely gorgeous ring, family and friends in on the secret, and took place where the Bride-to-be has always dreamed of getting married. This handsome groom thought of everything and thanks to Kimberly Florence Photography, who captured it all, you can share in the newly-engaged couple’s bliss here.

From The Groom…Whew! A lot of excitement and nervousness. I began planning the big day about one-and-a-half months ago. Of course, I started with the ring. My recommendation to all guys who are planning on getting engaged is drop subtle hints about rings and she will give you hints or idea. I think it’s very important to buy a ring that she will love and have no problem wearing in public. Being that Adeline is big into event/wedding planning, she has seen or heard about these amazing engagements, so I wanted to be able to impress her and have her look back and say “Wow! My engagement was amazing.” Once the ring had been purchased and was being made I decided to start the conversation with a few of her closest friends and family to see if they could be a part of her special day. Once I had her friends and family on track, I had to begin planning all other aspects: venue, flowers and clothing for her. I would recommend to all future grooms planning an engagement to make sure you give yourself and others plenty of time to prepare—it may seem like plenty of time but it creeps up on you fast.

My whole idea of the engagement was a mini scavenger hunt which led her to her friends and family along the way. After Adeline left for work that morning, I began the day by picking up one of her friends that was secretly staying at her mom’s house who had flown in the day before. We picked up some small flowers and snacks for all the girls who would be staying at her mom’s house to help Adeline get ready. I wrote out three cue cards/hints of the scavenger hunt and gave them to the individuals who would be a part of the day. Her first card instructed her to go to a nail salon so she could have her nails done. (Guys make sure her nails are done before you propose.) One of her friends was waiting at the nail salon for her where they got her nails done and the second cue card was given to her, which instructed her to go to her moms house where more of her friends were waiting. At her mom’s house Adeline had three dresses to choose from that I had purchased ahead of time. Once Adeline had hair and makeup done by friends, she was given her third cue card where she was picked up by a black car Uber and driven to me at the venue. I chose the Meridian house venue because this is where Adeline has always dreamed of being married.

It’s painted on their faces with sweet smiles and evident in their body language’s closeness and comfort. Fall in love with love all over again here.

From Sally PineraThis engagement session was deeply inspired by natural tones and gorgeous organic feel. We hoped for a whimsical and effortless environment. And in the a very busy city, Dumbarton Oaks is a gem!

From the Bride…Working with Sally and Robert was everything we hoped for. SMP Blogger Bride: Makeup Artist Questions with Carl Ray

One of the best parts about being engaged is planning the big day. I remember being overwhelmed with ideas and questions for myself, but before my fiancé and I selected a date, decided on a budget and picked a venue, I was sure to book one vendor that ranked much higher on my priority list at the time—my bridal makeup artist. I mean I am a beauty blogger after all!

There are a bevy of great makeup artists, but my go-to bridal makeup professional is Carl Ray (you may have seen his work on the cover of Vogue or Glamour). You see, outside of his outstanding bridal artistry career, Carl Ray is personal makeup artist to First Lady Michelle Obama and I got the opportunity to ask the man behind the beauty to dish on all things bridal and FLOTUS while he primped me for my engagement shoot. Read on for the answers to all your beauty questions!

Why should a bride have professional makeup applied on their wedding day?

CR: Hiring a professional makeup artist is essential just like any other vendor for your wedding because their knowledge and expertise will have you flawless and camera ready. Also, it will help subside your wedding day jitters.

How far in advance should brides book their makeup artist?

CR: Brides should start the search for a good makeup artist when they get engaged and have a wedding date locked in. Personally, I can book up to a year in advance.

What should brides look for when searching for a makeup artist for their big day? What types of questions should they ask?

CR: Brides should look at a makeup artist’s portfolio or website to get a feel for their aesthetic. It’s great if the artist comes highly recommended. Find out how many years of experience the artist has in bridal makeup and look up reviews online!

Why is scheduling a bridal makeup trial so important?

CR: Bridal trials are important for both the artist and the bride. During the trial, the bride should express their thoughts and feelings on the inspiration of the ‘look’ she is going for on her wedding day. Brides can see and feel how they will look on their wedding day while the artist can get to know you and your personality. Together you can both tweak the look to exactly what you envision.

How can SMP brides prep for the big day skincare wise?

CR: To start, lightly exfoliate your skin one or two times a week. Drink plenty of water, exercise and make sure to get your Z’s. To keep your skin in tip top condition, I recommend using a creamy cleanser, SPF, face and eye cream or serum appropriate for your skin type.

What should brides avoid doing/wearing before/on the day of their wedding?

CR: Brides should avoid getting deep cleansing facials so close to their wedding day because you run the risk of breakouts.

What products should a bride keep on-hand for touch-ups after the ceremony?

CR: Carry a pressed powder or blotting papers for touch-ups throughout the day. Also, keep a lip color handy since you will be eating, drinking and kissing!

What’s it like being THE makeup artist to First Lady Michelle Obama? How do you balance a busy schedule between working with FLOTUS and being a go-to bridal makeup guru?

CR: It’s an honor to be FLOTUS’ personal makeup artist. FLOTUS is rarely busy or traveling on weekends and I know my White House schedule at least three months in advance.

US National Arboretum Engagement Session

With its sandstone Corinthian columns, forestland filled with flowering dogwood and azaleas, and hidden away trellises, the United States National Arboretum may be the most romantic place to have your engagement session. Just take a look at these gorgeous photos from Jacqui Cole Photography for the proof—plus more pretty in the full gallery right here!

Colors

From Jacqui Cole PhotographyI love when my couples choose to have their engagement session in a meaningful location. Sarah Beth and Josh will be hosting their 2016 wedding in the brides’ home town of Tampa, FL at the Tampa Yacht and Country Club. However, they both currently live and reside in DC. Since I love to travel for my clients, I was thrilled to be able to capture their engagement in the city where their story begins. We spent most of the morning hours at the US National Arboretum which was the perfect romantic backdrop! I couldn’t be more excited to capture Sarah Beth and Josh’s wedding day next March!

From the Bride-to-be… Josh and I met during our first year of law school in Washington, DC in the Spring of 2011. After graduating and settling into jobs in DC, Josh proposed in March while we were on vacation in London. On the last night of our trip, we went to the Shard for one final toast to a great vacation, and he took me by total surprise when he dropped down on one knee! We had already planned to fly to Tampa (my hometown) the next weekend, and Josh’s parents were also visiting there from the Midwest, so we were so lucky to be able to celebrate with both of our families just a few days later.

We decided to have our wedding where I grew up in Tampa, but DC has become our home, so we wanted to have our engagement photos taken here. On the morning Jacqui came up to DC for our shoot, we woke up early to catch the sunrise and started taking photos on the waterfront near where we currently live. We then drove to the National Arboretum, which is one of our favorite places in DC. Josh first took me there for a surprise picnic a few years ago, and we love visiting whenever we have the chance. We used the old columns from the Capitol building and the beautiful gardens of the Arboretum as a backdrop for our photos. We were a little worried about waking up so early, but it was completely worth it to get the best light and avoid crowds (which is nearly impossible in DC). Now we just can’t wait until next March for our wedding!

Surprise DC Picnic Proposal

I don’t think I’ve ever met a proposal quite as cute as this one. With Cheers Darling Events at his side to plan every lovely detail, this Groom-to-be was determined to surprise his sweet, beautiful Bride and that he did—picnic style, complete with a couple of calligraphy-adorned bottles of bubbly by Laura Hooper, a cake from Buttercream Bakeshop and of course, Lisa Ziesing of Abby Jiu Photography there to capture it all. It’s just the dose of love we need to start off another pretty week and it’s all right here in the gallery!

From Cheers Darling EventsChristina is hard to surprise, so when Ryan reached out to organize a perfect proposal, we knew we would have to be really sneaky. Having met while both working in Washington, DC and spending many early mornings running the National Mall together, Ryan knew the Mall would be a perfect spot to propose to Christina. To set the day up, Ryan recruited a friend to take Christina to get her hair and make up down in the afternoon in preparation for what she thought was a friends birthday party. Ryan mentioned to us that Christina loved anything personalized, so we recruited Laura Hooper Calligraphy to pen her favorite F. Scott Fitzgerald quote on a bottle of bubbly and wrapped her favorite flowers in quote covered kraft paper. Playing off the patriotic feel of the National Mall, we created a picnic using pieces of red, white and blue in a subtle way. Ryan arrived at the National Mall with Christina on the pretense they were snapping some photos before meeting their friends at the party. As they made their way down the Mall, the picnic came into view and Christina started to question Ryan and just then, he dropped down on one knee and ask her to marry him! We captured the whole thing thanks to Lisa from Abby Jiu Photography. After some newly engaged photos of the couple, they sat down for a picnic together, soaking up the good news and the beautiful DC sunsets!

Washington DC Cherry Blossom Elopement Inspiration

No photos capture the glory of cherry blossoms quite as beautifully as these right here. Jenna Henderson snapped away as the pretty petals swirled about, and combined with the intimate romance of an early morning elopement, this shoot is sure to make your heart beat a bit faster. Designs in Paper’s talent and Modern Bridal Studio’s magic are on full display and these are the sorts of pics I’ll never ever tire of.

From Jenna HendersonClassic, timeless, and elegant. These are the words that come to mind for this shoot. The inspiration came from both the beautiful blooming cherry trees of Washington, DC as well as the classy city itself.

Our model wore a stunning BHLDN dress, full of dreamy movement with an heirloom feel. Paired with her groom in a sharp black tux, these images feel like they could have come from any time over the last century. Adding to the timeless feel of this shoot was the film, including some black and white film shot with and old camera belonging to the bride’s mother.

The location was completely magical, with the cherry trees in peak bloom. We shot just as the sun was coming up, before the crowds came out. A light wind stirred falling blossoms, making them feel like confetti as we wandered around the tidal basin.

This shoot was styled as an elopement, as if this pair were just quietly and intimately married on the firm foundation of the marble steps of our nation’s capitol.

Bright + Colorful D.C. Bridal Shower

If your idea of the perfect springtime soiree involves sunshine, cocktails and donuts then look no further because Cheers Darling Events has made your dreams a reality. Marrying pink refreshments, blooms, and a pastry fueled brunch, this colorful shower is feminine yet fun. From brightly hued accents to the hand-painted cake a la Buttercream Bakeshop, Megan Chase Photography has it all waiting for you in the gallery!

From Kaitlin Przezdziecki of Cheers Darling EventsLiving in DC, nothing makes us happier than a terrace cocktail as soon as the weather warms up! We drew our inspiration from our “sunshine in our face and champagne brunch” love for a bridal shower styled shoot.

For the colors, we selected bright pinks, greens, oranges and a pop of gold (calligraphy) to celebrate the warm weather and the bride-to-be! Highway to Hill brought the color palette to life with two fluffy arrangements for the table. In contrast to the metallic tables and brick terrace at Iron Gate Restaurant, the flowers brightened the entire space up! We added feminine and cheerful touches to the shower with hand-painted cakes from Buttercream Bakeshop and oversized yellow balloons. We love anything that makes a bright statement and draws attention to our guest of honor.

Our favorite detail? Our “bridal ask”; the bridesmaids lifted their doughnuts to reveal “will you be my bridesmaid”! We love the idea of asking your closest girlfriends to be a part of your day with a sweet treat — and who doesn’t love doughnuts?! Instead of traditional flavors, the ladies snacked on Nutella and Carrot Cake doughnuts from Astro Doughnuts.

As a favor to each bridesmaid, all the ladies left with customized stemless champagne flutes – we love the classic look of each guests name handwritten on the glasses. We had so much fun laughing and styling with Megan Chase Photography (it is so great to have friends who make such beautiful models!)

From Megan Chase Photography From 7th grade to present day, these two have always been by each others side! I am SO lucky to be apart of their journey! Luisianna and Ryan met me before the sun rose. The entire DC tidal basin was peaceful and adorned in cherry blossoms. I couldn’t have asked for a better backdrop to capture their love. Although they are currently stationed in Hawaii, this gorgeous couple came back home for wedding errands. It was great to finally meet them in person as they prepare for their August wedding. They survived the “cold” sunrise session and looked like models the entire time. I think it is safe to say that their big day will be a stunner!

Romantic Ballroom Wedding at the Ritz, D.C

Why every wedding doesn’t have a floral chandelier is beyond me. After seeing this masterpiece from Amaryllis Inc., I’m convinced no wedding is complete without one—after all, what could be more romantic than dancing under a halo of romantic roses and delicate orchids? Get ready to fall in love with every detail, including glamorous hair and makeup from Amie Decker Beauty and photo booth fun from Booth-O-Rama, in the gallery captured by Readyluck.

From Anne at A Trendy WeddingDanielle & Matt’s wedding was the perfect combination of timeless elegance with some fresh modern elements. The soft color palette of cream, soft pink with assorted metallic looked stunning in the Ritz Carlton ballroom. The highlight of the room was the floral wreath suspended over the dance floor and was the perfect wow factor and first things guests laid eyes on when entering the reception. The watercolor design that was carried out in all the paper products and signage kept the look fresh and fun, but still held a very classic feel to it all. We had the larger canvas signs hand painted to mimic the other watercolor design and in the end everything felt very cohesive and connected. The personal elements of the bride’s cuban heritage were also incorporated in the bar details, such as the custom cocktail napkins and specialty drinks, which guests thoroughly enjoyed.

Elegant Washington DC Fall Wedding

Is it me or is D.C. getting cooler by the day? Every wedding from our country’s capital that crosses my desk seems to have a certain style and this elegant bash isn’t an exception. This couple embraced their city, from their invites by Gourmet Invitations to their cake by Fluffy Thoughts, with Andrea Jacobson for The Observatory capturing all. This gallery has me adding D.C. to the top of my travel list pronto.

From the Bride… John and I met at Howard University over a decade ago. After he proposed on New Year’s Eve, we began planning our DC themed wedding because DC is where our relationship started and grew.

When we were looking for venues, I knew that I wanted a location that would be a good fit for an elegant evening. We both wanted the wedding to be formal and fun. We decided that we wanted traditional tuxedos for the groomsmen and I wanted the bridesmaids in floor length glittery dresses. I don’t think that John liked the idea of having the bridesmaids in different dresses but I think he finally came around when he saw them all together on the wedding day.

Because so many of our guests were coming from out of town, we wanted to infuse the DC theme throughout as many elements of the wedding as possible. We searched everywhere for Save the Dates that a touch of DC and found a DC skyline Save the Date online at Etsy. However, when it came to the invitations we knew we were going to need a custom invitation because of all the details we wanted. We found Tifany from Gourmet Invitations online. We shared with Tifany that we wanted to incorporate the DC map on a custom die cut invitation, as well as emboss a DC skyline that my Dad had designed for us that included each our initials hidden in the design. The invitations Tifany designed brought together our wedding colors and showcased the DC theme.

I don’t even know if I can name just one of my favorite details of the day. I loved that we had an opportunity to have a first look because John and I were able to see each other and spend some time with the wedding party before the ceremony and reception. We were able to take pictures at the Lincoln Memorial where he proposed and John’s brother had us all laughing so hard we were in tears. I loved the ceremony because our officiant really captured who we are as a couple and John’s vows had me and guests crying.

The wedding venue, Andrew Mellon Auditorium, is amazing on its own but seeing the phenomenal flowers and décor from Amaryllis took my breath away. We utilized every space in the Mellon Auditorium. The Auditorium has a foyer that is usually used for cocktail hour but we used it for our ceremony. It was the perfect size for the number of guests and the lighting really made it feel intimate. Amaryllis provided a large frame to hold our escort cards. The cards incorporated our DC theme, we used pictures of locations throughout DC, including Howard University buildings and DC landmarks and monuments. The pictures were taken by myself and my friend, Yoori, and Tifany from Gourmet Invitations helped us design cards that looked like a Polaroid photos.

The element that really brought together the DC theme in our reception was the wedding cake with the DC skyline. Lara at Fully Thoughts made a cake that was not only beautiful but also delicious. We were able to have three cake flavors and I still dream about the pumpkin flavor. All the guests raved about it.

My favorite moment of the day was when all the wedding guests formed a circle around us and sang Lean on Me. It’s a tradition with John and his friends. John’s favorite moment of the wedding was the best man’s speech. His brother Jason had the guests laughing and in tears. The entire day was full of lots of laughs and happy tears. It seems a bit cliché to say it was the best day ever, but it was.

Green + Gold Modern Washington DC Wedding

There’s just enough sparkle in this Washington DC wedding to really catch our eye. It’s an emerald green and gold affair at the beautiful DAR Constitution Hall with fun, modern twists like shimmery dresses, a library cocktail hour and donuts for late-night snacks! Adam Barnes Fine Art Photography captured the Bride (flawless thanks to Real Doll Makeup) and Groom on their special day in the full gallery right here!

[iframe https://player.vimeo.com/video/120268153 600 338]

From the beautiful Bride… John and I spent over half of our relationship long distance – he’s from Pittsburgh and I’m from Texas, and his job kept him on the road for most of the week. Although we’ve seen more than our share of airports and cities, DC is the place that we’ve made our home. It became even more special to us when John proposed to me at Reagan National Airport last winter!

Even though we are both in notoriously intense and unfunny professions (John is a consultant, I’m a lawyer), we are both huge fans of comedy shows. One weekend, we went to an Aziz Ansari stand-up comedy show at DAR-Constitution Hall, right across the street from the White House. While waiting in line outside, all I could focus on was how stunning the building was and whether the venue allowed weddings. Luckily for us, it did, and it was the first vendor we booked! The second vendor we booked was our incredible photographer, Adam Barnes of Adam Barnes Fine Art Photography. We fell in love with his work the instant we saw it; he did a beautiful job capturing the day and was also a wonderful person to have alongside us the entire time.

Our wedding is incredibly special to us because it was 100% tailored to us – we both wanted a traditional, elegant wedding at the core, but with a modern, personal twist, which we executed through DIY projects and lots of Etsy. ;) The DAR was perfect for us because it’s a classic DC venue, but also has gorgeous lighting and details without being too ornate or over the top. The space was beautiful and fit our needs perfectly – our ceremony was outdoors, the cocktail hour was in the library (the check-out desk became a bar!), dinner was in the O’Byrne Gallery, and dancing was outside under the Portico.

We were able to make the wedding our own with all of the details, big and small: huge gold XOXO balloons, the processional music (our wedding party walked down the aisle to songs originally by Michael Jackson and the Beach Boys; I walked down the aisle to “Can’t Help Falling In Love”), the wedding cake made by my talented sister, beer from Pennsylvania and Texas, photos on the mantle of our parents and my family dog who had sadly passed away the day before our wedding, Krispy Kreme Donuts and late night snacks, an American flag sendoff (did I mention John wants to be President one day…?), and other homemade touches – John’s dad and grandpa built our wedding gift box, and John built the arch that we got married under. We put a lot of work into the wedding to make sure everything felt like us, and seeing how it all came together was indescribable. Our month-of planner, Jen Bryan of Elegantly Chic Events, took away so much of the stress that comes with wedding planning and made sure the entire weekend went off without a hitch. Our DJ, Michael Cruz from Bialeks Music, did a perfect job reading the crowd and helped make the night so much fun. At the end of the night, we were able to donate all of our flowers to nursing homes, hospice care and shelter facilities through Repeat Roses.

One of the most special parts of the day was standing under the arch John built, saying the personal vows we had written for one another. I loved hearing what John had written, and laughed when I realized we had even made some of the same references in our vows to one another. I love that we can someday put the arch in our backyard and be reminded of that memory.

Since our wedding was in the fall, we chose a color scheme of emerald green, blush pink, and gold. The bridesmaids wore emerald green dresses, while my three older sisters (Matrons of Honor) wore the same dress in a sparkly gold. I knew my wedding dress would be tulle from Day One, and when I found my trumpet cut tulle dress at a boutique in Dallas, I knew it was the perfect choice for me – made even more perfect when my wedding dress tailor, Angie Cavallaro, created a silk organza bow for the back of the dress to add some extra oomph! In one of my favorite fashion choices of the day, John wore a custom-made navy and black tuxedo to stand out from the groomsmen. It fit him like a glove and he looked extra handsome that day!

We had such a fun and incredible time surrounded by people we love, and couldn’t be more grateful for our beautiful day!

Elegant Washington D.C. Hotel Wedding

Cinderella had a fairy godmother to help make her dreams come true. This beautiful Bride had an amazing team. From the flawless event planning from Howerton + Wooten Events and the gorgeous photography from Stephen Bobb to the prettiest details—music from MyDeejay, calligraphy from Laura Hooper, and bridesmaids’ dresses from Jenny Yoo—this fabulous fête proves you need talent, not magic, to have your own fairytale day. Swoon over all the amazing photos here.   [iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/109716679 600 338]

From Howerton+Wooten Events, LLC … Ashley and Andrew were a true joy before, during and after their emotional wedding day. They were such a sweet couple—It was pretty evident that they loved life, loved their families, and most of all, they loved each other. Ashley walked down the aisle while Da Vinci Strings performed Christina Perri’s romantic song, “A Thousand Years.” Andrew’s emotion was palpable as Ashley walked down the aisle. Their flower girls and ring bearers brought a joy and spirit to their wedding that only children could bring to a wedding day. They danced, giggled and sang until they collapsed on the floor during the reception. This stylish wedding had the most gorgeous romantic style and it was filled with classic details in ivory and gold colors. The first word that comes to mind for the wedding ceremony is flora – The ceremony was filled with white and cream-colored lilies, orchids and roses, and they were complemented with an abundance of lush greenery. The wedding stationery was ivory with gold lettering – This included the ivory escort cards written with Laura Hooper’s gold lettering. As the wedding guests arrived, they were welcomed to the wedding, offered a beverage and escorted to their seats. As the wedding guests departed, they were treated with white chocolate and milk chocolate pretzels that resembled brides and grooms. The wedding guests had so much fun during Ashley and Andrew’s wedding that the dance floor was hopping during dinner and the dancing continued lasted until the very last song of the night. The wedding cake was a sleek design with blush-colored orchids cascading down the sign. This wedding cake sat on an ivory pedestal from Sarah’s Stands. However, the Fairmont banquet staff presented the wedding cake to the guests in a miniature trio of cakes, crème brulée and chocolate mousse.
