Classic + Elegant Fall Dallas Wedding

classic Dallas bash complete with my favorite color palette makes me one happy wedding blogger. Rich jewel tones (those Jenny Yoo bridesmaid dresses!) and lush bouquets make this elegant affair a stylish one to boot and Stephanie Brazzle captured every perfect detail. More in our Vault this way!

From the Bride… Taylor and I met while in graduate school in his final year Texas Tech. We were introduced by longtime mutual friends who would later become married, and eventually a bridesmaid and groomsman in our own wedding! After dating for five years Taylor finally proposed in his hometown of Austin, at the scenic 360 Bridge overlook. He had a photographer and champagne ready. Afterwards, Taylor had planned a romantic dinner at Olive and June. We spent the first 30 minutes calling friends and family spreading the exciting news. Finally we had to turn off our phones and just enjoyed the evening and each other.

After a meticulous search for venues the vintage wood floors and panoramic views at Room On Main swept us off our feet. This historic and vintage feel are what I loved most. The architect in Taylor appreciated the story of the building, the clean lines and openness. Our inspiration pulled from the retro elegance of the 1920’s and art deco time period. Gold, and jeweled reds and blues were our color scheme. I wanted to include little bits of both of us and our families in the ceremony and reception. From Taylor’s grandmother’s silver cake knife we cut cake with to the family pearls I wore with my dress, we had little bits and pieces everywhere that meant so much to us.

The entire day of our wedding I kept reminding myself to slow down and taken it all in, and thought I was doing a good job, but looking back some things are still a blur! The things that stand out are my wonderful bridesmaids helping set out our personal touches in between make up sessions at The Room On Main. Teasing the gold dinosaurs into all standing up, a quirky throwback to Taylor’s childhood obsession. Laying out the chalkboards my cousin and I had lovingly penned. I remember walking down the aisle with my great grandmother’s hand embroidered handkerchief in my bouquet and not being able to take my eyes off Taylor. I’ll never forget spinning through our first dance to Unforgettable, by Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole or our polaroid photo booth we kept going back too! I’ll always remember when we dipped Taylor’s favorite pastries in coffee and traded perfect bites instead of having a groom’s cake. We capped off the evening by running through a sea of dried lavender supplied by our eager guests on our way to our getaway car.

Modern Austin Wedding at Prospect House

Weddings are like a page-turning novel to me. Each detail of a couples’ special day is like an enticing chapter I can’t wait to devour. Where did they meet? What did they love? Well, when I can figure all of that out by a single day alone, it’s pretty special. So watching a love story like this one unfold in the prettiest of ways (hello planning from Bird Dog Wedding and gorgeous imagery from Heather Curiel) might just be my favorite thing ever. See all the reasons why in the VAULT.

From The Bride…Neal and I met as random roommates in an apartment in Boston’s South End. We loved living in New England, but in need for a little adventure we moved south to Austin, Texas on a whim! Austin has been an amazing city to live in, and not long after we arrived Neal (with the help of our puppy, Brady) proposed! We couldn’t wait to show off our new city to our friends and family, so it was only fitting that we invite everyone down to Texas for our wedding.

Picking a venue in Texas was no easy feat. Our style is more modern than Texas-chic, but we wanted our guests to get an authentic Texas experience. Enter: Prospect House. We feel so fortunate to have come across this new venue in the Hill Country- the vibe is very modern-art-gallery-meets-Texas-barn and it was perfect!

Once the venue was set, all of the other details just seemed to fall into place. We kept the vibe very natural and elegant, playing off of the modern, clean lines of the venue. Even picking the dress came easy- I ended up with the very first one I tried on (despite trying on what seemed like hundreds of others)!

Including our friends in our big day was really important to us. Neal and I wrote the entire ceremony, including our own vows, and we had a very dear friend, Mike, officiate. He was ordained online, and having him there made the whole day feel so much more personal and special. We opted for a very small bridal party, but several of my girlfriends served as my “something blue” and sat up in the front row as a good omen.

Because our guests were all coming from out of town, we hosted a big welcome party at Terrace 59 on Congress, we made welcome bags full of Austin-made treats and a map of the local area highlights. Most of our guests made a long weekend out of the trip and took the time to really explore the city, which was exactly what we had hoped they’d do! There’s so much to see.

We wanted everyone to get the most out of their Austin experience, including a meal from a food truck. Dock and Roll drove out to Prospect House on Saturday night to deliver late-night lobster rolls and homemade chips- it was the perfect way to cap off an incredible evening and a great nod to our New England roots.

With the entire day behind us, my advice to future brides is that you opt for a “first look”. Neal and I were set on not seeing each other before the ceremony- he wanted to see me for the first time as I was walking down the aisle. But we had some minor snafus on the big day and by the time we arrived at the venue I knew that the only way I’d calm down was to see him. He’s my person- that’s why we were getting married in the first place. I had our photographer grab him for a quick hallway hug, and it was all I needed to feel excited and ready for the ceremony. The rest of the day was absolutely perfect!

Al Fresco Valentine’s Day Wedding Inspiration

A pink bicycle + blooms + a basket full-o-chihuahua = possibly the cutest thing ever. And it’s just one snap from this charming al fresco Valentine’s Day shoot from Sheradee Hurst Photography and Inspire Events. It’s the perfect dose of rich reds, pinks and golds to prep us for a weekend packed with love. See more in The Vault!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/145447168 600 338]

From Inspire EventsThis brook was just rolling with the sounds of romance. The kind where you can’t help but hear chirping birds and the rippling brook. The real show stopper though, was the bridge. (Oh that bridge!) The contrast in the the stone makes it both stunning and captivating by tying in some classic Valentine’s Day colors, we created a traditionally romantic, yet anything but cliche’ feel to this Valentine’s Day shoot.

Creating this setting all came together around love in nature. From the plates with the flowers and butterflies, to the charger plates that mirrored the coloring of the blue green mossy cover on the river rocks. Gold flatware played delicately with the gold color in the trees when captured on film. With the sunlight shining on the changing seasonal beauty that is revealed, the gold was magnificent in the elements.

Pops of red in the floral were a must in the centerpieces and the pomegranate addition just added that extra bit of detail to the table. I wanted to incorporate deep rich colors that would really stand out in the setting. For this shoot, the flowers were a driving factor. The flowers were selected because they added to the gracefulness of the feeling. I also loved the garland for the table top. There is prominent eucalyptus, but there’s a handmade DIY for brides on the table also. Using coffee filters, a thick thread, and gold spray paint a DIY paper garland was created to accent the greenery. The garland added additional textures to the table top, something different and unique.

The playfulness of the script on the invitations, the addition of the bicycle and the little puppy all gave this shoot a lighter flare. The deep coloring of the envelopes tied to the dark wood naked table. Again, this continues to develop the brilliance of the color pallet chosen.

The cakes were paired perfectly, by the amazing Mishelle Handy Cakes. Her unmatchable talent was on display and on the mark. The delicate design and the subtle accents made for a lavish and elaborate cake of stunning artistry.

This dress was our top choice because it is so exquisite, something so feminine in a natural setting. Something so gorgeous in this place of no expectation; it was a natural fit. The head piece was also provide by J.J. Kelly and sparkled against the water. The reflecting sun off the water, the jeweled headpiece, and the glimmer in her eyes was as though she was catching the eye of her lover. All sparkling together to create a sort of glow around this gorgeous bride.

The soft, simplicity of the bride’s hair was intentional. It’s not overly done, it’s intentionally relaxed. It allowed the bride to shine and still showed the gorgeous headpiece. Andrea Lemonds nailed it with the hair and the splendid tie to the colors, accented by the brides make up, especially the lipstick choice. Magnificent!

The original detail in the design of the sitting couch really drew me in. Immediately upon seeing this for the first time, I knew I had to have it. It takes me to a place and time, free from the hustle and bustle, to a time when beauty was held in hands of those who deemed all beauty a treasure. The demure, reserved quality that is shown by the incredible Sheradee Hurst Photography in these film images is more than we can handle. Adding the naked table and chairs (George and Martha) as the Bride and Groom table was an inevitable decision. The rawness and the dark coloring of the wood on both the table and the chairs, set against the backdrop of the trees, the brook and the floor of the earth, allowed me to continue with the naturistic beauty but also adding some sophistication to the landscape.

The sitting couch was in itself, just lovely. The detail in the design of this couch draws you in with its textures. Being the original design, there was never a doubt this would be featured in the shoot. Adding the naked table and chairs (George and Martha) as the Bride and Groom table was an inevitable decision. The rawness and the dark coloring of the wood on both the table and the chairs, set against the backdrop of the trees, the brook, and the floor of the earth married naturistic beauty by adding some sophistication to the landscape.

Classic Dallas Wedding with a Dream Oscar De La Renta Gown

Classic weddings will always win my heart. The elegance, the grace, and the tradition make for timeless celebration, and this real wedding is all of the above. Photographed by Sarah Kate, there’s so many moments to love (can you even handle that Oscar de la Renta gown?!) and we’ll be poring over each bit. Get started in The Vault.

From The Bride… Jere and I first met in Dallas. I was living in New York at the time and he was living in Midland, a small town in Texas. We were in Dallas spending time with family for Easter weekend, but I ventured out to meet my friends at Javier’s on that Friday night. Jere was at Javier’s with mutual friends. We met in the cigar bar in the back, ordering margaritas. That Sunday I got a “poke” on Facebook and a long distance relationship began. We did long distance for a year, New York to Midland and then I moved back home to Dallas a year before we got married. We now live in charming Midland and I am learning how to live in a small town. Having the love of my life next to me makes it easy.

The Proposal

I was going to Midland to meet Jere for the weekend, but he surprised me at Love Field Airport in Dallas before I could get on the plane for his town. Where were we going? New York City! Jere was a not a big surprise person so this was a huge surprise. We went and grabbed a beer while we waited for our flight to the big city. I was so curious!! Was this the weekend? I was trying so hard not to get my hopes up. He told me that he wasn’t telling me what we were doing, where we were staying or how many days we were there.

We landed and he told the cab “78th and Madison”. The cab took us to the Carlyle Hotel. I have always wanted to stay there. It is a New York classic, so romantic. We had a glass of champagne before our dinner downtown at Il Mulino. We were carbo loading as we were training for a marathon that February in Austin which meant the next morning we had a long 12 mile run to complete. Our dinner was amazing – best pasta and bread I have ever had. Jere seemed nervous, but I still had no idea if this weekend was THE weekend.

We were set to run the next morning after breakfast. Because I didn’t bring the appropriate clothing for 12 degree snowy weather in NYC, I had to put on so many random layers! I had a fancy scarf, tie dye hat, hiking socks on my feet and my hands – no gloves. We started our run from the Carlyle and around central park ending 12 miles by the Central Park Boat House, Bethesda Terrace fountain. He said “Kate, let’s go over there and look by the fountain.” I walked ahead, getting nervous at this point. Was this the moment? He said, “Kate, wait I have a question,” he was on a knee. He proposed. “Yes!!!” His little sister Catherine, my best friend Carla and his cousin Cathleen were all right there taking pictures of us, hiding!

The Planning

What type of venue were you looking for? We decided Dallas because we both had family there, it just made more sense. I didn’t like the idea of having people travel too far to celebrate! I wanted to have the ceremony at the church I grew up in and a reception outside under the stars and with a tent. I had always imagined a big tent with lights, dancing and smiles. The tent was built over the pool at the Dallas Country Club.

The Dress

Oscar de la Renta designed my dress. It was one of the last ones he designed before he passed away. That made it extra special. It was a ball gown. I felt so pretty and very myself. I stayed in my dress the whole night. I purchased it in Dallas at Neiman Marcus.

The Day

The best part of the day was seeing Jere for the first time plus being excited with my mom, best friends and future mother in law/sisters all day leading up to it. That morning, Jere dropped off a flower with a note at my parents’ house where I had been living (for 2 months) until Jere and I got married. That was special to wake up with my parents greeting me with breakfast on my wedding day.

Words of Wisdom

What advise do you have for other brides? One of my friends Brittany told me, “Don’t let the wedding get in front of the wedding.” It really is about you and your fiance, not the party, at the end of the day. The Wednesday before your wedding have a date with your person, just you two. Have a glass of wine, relax and talk about your excitement after exchanging a gift or letter.

Marriage Matters: 45+ Years of Adventure + Love

Anyone who knows me knows how much I absolutely adore Valentine’s Day. And while yes, I’m quite the fan of flowers and sweet treats, it’s love stories like this one here that truly pulls at my heart strings and gives me so much joy. This one, told by the dapperest of gentlemen, and the pure love captured in Julie Paisley’s pics, are the best #relationshipgoals I ever did see. Sound a little too good to be true? Read on – I promise you it’s not only worth it, but you’ll be smiling all weekend long.

From Fred… This story begins on a cold winter’s’ night in March of 1967, in a small, remote town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Marquette, Michigan to be exact. How a boy from Deptford, New Jersey and a girl from Floresville, Texas happen to cross paths there is beyond me, but this is where this story begins. Did I say it was a cold winter’s’ night in Marquette? Cold may not begin to describe what it’s like in the Upper Peninsula, take my word for it, when I say cold I mean cold. Snow, about 200 inches a year, and the temperature that night was probably around 8 or 9 degrees… yes, it was cold.

There was a dance that Friday night at the Airman’s Club. A small version of a Non Commissioned Officers Club on K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base, smack dab in the middle of the Michigan State Forest. And… it didn’t take long to make eye contact with a woman, who, little did I know at that time would become my wife of 45 (+) years. Yep, I was hooked. Call it fate, a chance meeting, destiny, happenstance, call it what you will, that chance meeting changed my life forever. There she was dancing in the middle of the dance floor creating a scene, and stopping traffic. Well, whatever she was doing was mesmerizing half the male population of K. I. Sawyer AFB, (the other half must have been sleeping), and of course being the suave, sophisticated Mr. Cool boy from New Jersey that I am, I asked her to dance. (Of course I was immediately turned down)….

But… persistence pays off, and before the night was over, we danced and talked and laughed. She made fun of my New Jersey accent, and I made fun of her… well, there was nothing to make fun of. Let’s just say, it was great. And, from that moment on our lives have been full of one shared memory after another. Some of the coolest, fondest, most wonderful memories anyone could ask for. I’d like to take a moment or two to share some of those memories with you.

Let’s see, where do I begin… from the Ice Carvings at Northern Michigan University, smack dab in the middle of Marquette, to about two years later, in August of 1969, when we were married in her home town of Floresville, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. It was a dream come true for me. Of course, I should mention that it was the middle of summer, 105 degree heat in Floresville, and me in my dress Air Force blues. But 105 degrees… really? But that was the day I can say my life actually began.

From that day forward we shared memories halfway around the world and back again… several times over. We spent many unbelievably special evenings on the beaches of Waikiki on the island of Oahu. Crisscrossed most of these 50 United States over the years, and made a second home for ourselves in Europe. Ramstein, Germany to be exact. In between all that we have been showered with good fortune that most couples can only dream about.

From Michigan to Goose Bay, Canada. From Washington D.C., to Hawaii, and many spots in between, we’ve had a blast along the way. Three Children and six grandchildren later and we’re still together, and enjoying a life together that most folks envy, and many families only hope for. I have a funny feeling that this journey is far from over. We have so much still to see, so many places to experience, and still so very memories to share.

Leven Rambin + Jim Parrack’s Al Fresco Texas Wedding

You know her from roles on our favorite shows like One Tree Hill, Grey’s Anatomy and All My Children, but today Leven Rambin is stepping into the role of bride with a look inside her autumn wedding to Jim Parrack (a.k.a . Hoyt from True Blood.) Taking cues from the venue, Leven and Jim’s planner, Something To Celebrate designed a day infused with European-style elegance and Heather Curiel came on board to capture. Consider your wedding plans infinitely inspired, and pin every bit inside The Vault.

From the Bride, Leven… I really wanted my wedding to have an ethereal, bohemian elegance to it. I was so inspired and elated once I found the venue, Le San Michele in the tiny town of Buda, Texas. Virginia, the owner, has turned her home and property into an adorable, unique, modern shabby church paradise with hints of European elegance. I immediately fell in love with all the lighting fixtures she had in the trees and the Moroccan lamps that scatters the property. The gardens added a romantic feel, too.

I wanted earthy Pastel tones more appropriate for a spring wedding, but I didn’t care! I knew exactly what I wanted down to every detail and my planners and florists nailed it. When I arrived, my breath was taken away at how accurately they were able to make my vision come to life! It was small and intimate and absolutely perfect.

The Karaoke on the back patio after a delicious dinner was SUCH a hit! We sang, danced, and partied until the wee hours! Numerous guests have told me it was the best and most beautiful wedding they’d ever been to, and that it was like a fairytale! And that’s exactly what I was going for, so I’m very happy!

Ethereal Autumn Wedding at Vista West Ranch

Fall is my favorite. I love everything about the season so it’d be a bit of lie to say fall weddings don’t have a special little spot in my heart. And this masterpiece, captured by Mint Photography, is rising to the top of my list of amazing autumn evidence. From the full color palette to THIS bouquet, I’m jumping ahead a couple seasons and spending today in our Vault with this beauty.

Rustic

From Mint Photography… Molly and Ross’ fall wedding in the Texas Hill Country was one for the books. Can we just talk about their amazing style? Everything she chose, from her gown and bouquet to all of the venue decor, was simply amazing. I’ve never seen a more perfect fall/winter color palette incorporated into a wedding so wonderfully! The ambience in the room as the lights dimmed was so warm and inviting, just like this amazing couple. We couldn’t have been more honored to photograph this special day!

Sultry + Romantic Spanish Elopement Inspiration

While this may be an inspirational shoot perfect for all our romantic readers out there, this style and every image from Stephanie Brazzle is so, so good, I’m begging someone to replicate for their own real wedding. All you need to do is dial up Meggie Francisco to plan and design all the details and get La Tavola and Bella Acento on board for all beautiful linens and flatware. Because it’s obvious; when these vendors come together, magic happens. See it all before your eyes in our VAULT right here!

From Meggie Francisco… Locación, locación, locación: Sultry and romantic, with creamy terra cotta arches, Escondido Golf and Lake Club in Horseshoe Bay, Texas is the perfect spot for a Texas couple who would love to do a Latin-inspired destination wedding, yet prefers to keep the festivities local.

Our palette of apricot, dusty rose, and rich greens was pulled directly from the surroundings at Escondido. To bring this vision to life, Posh Floral masterfully composed a table centerpiece chock full of roses, orchids, ranunculus, and a variety of greenery, all overflowing from a sturdy golf compote. The place setting is comprised of fantastic finds from all sorts of places – the pale pink china is from Crate and Barrel, and we found the delicate pink Mexican glassware tucked away on a busy shelf at World Market. We topped the milky La Tavola linens with a sheer tattered scarf to add texture and character to the look.

The romantic yet daring Ines di Santo gown combines delicate lace with daring lines for a sexy yet demure bridal look, which is complemented by an organic, free-flowing bouquet with abundant greens and pale apricot and blush florals. The elegantly crafted statement earrings and classic round-cut rose gold engagement ring complement the look of simple glamour. For a touch of destination-inspired fun, the Aruna Seth shoes feature ornate beading with a tiny touch of turquoise, reminiscent of warm ocean waters.

Terra cotta ink and tile place cards bring earthiness and substance to the design while tying in the surrounding architecture, while the romantic calligraphy ensures that the feel remains airy and festive.

We are excited to share this shoot with readers of Style Me Pretty to show that if your destination wedding dreams are dashed, with the right design choices, it’s possible to achieve the same sense of passion and adventure to your home state!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/142689010 600 338]

From Awake PhotographyA classic tale of Texas girl meets Southern California surfer boy. Linda and Sheyne got married in her hometown of Houston, Texas and it was a day no one will soon forget. Starting at the fabulous Hotel Zaza, Linda and her 19 bridesmaids got dolled up with the help of Kiss and Makeup and The Perfect Face. They all looked absolutely stunning in the couture Plum Pretty Sugar dresses in shades of lavender, pinks and blues. They perfectly complimented the gorgeous bride wearing a stunning Monique Lhuillier gown. After getting married at the Bride’s childhood church, St. John the Divine, everyone headed to the reflection pools at the Houston Zoo where they danced the night away under string lighting, chandelier in the trees, and perfect Texas weather. The bride and groom are animal lovers, so they surprised their guests with the animal experience at cocktail hour. Animal trainers brought out an assortment of creatures for the guests to feed and pet. It was a huge hit! Bramble and Bee created gorgeous florals full of garden roses, ranunculus, and tulips which were perfectly accented by tiny golden animals as place cards. To round out a day of celebrating a lovely couple, Pomp and Circumstance, surprised the couple and their guests with a donut holes bar as a midnight snack. The day couldn’t have been more perfect, nor the couple more radiant.

From Loft PhotographyBeing that Brittany is a talented artist, we knew her wedding day was going to have well thought out & lovely details! We adore the rich colors that she chose for her wedding, and the bougainvillea around every corner at Escondido fit right in with her unique bouquets and centerpieces.

From The Bride…My wedding day encompassed Mediterranean architecture with Tuscan landscaping meets romantic Texas Hill Country! The wedding had contrast and pops of colors with a primary color palette of fuchsia and teal mixed with secondary colors of grey, mauve and taupe with a side contrast of black and white tuxedos and a checkered black and white dance floor. There were many different textures to play off of for the tablescapes: deer antlers with gold hombre spray paint, grapewood branches, textured teak wood tables, copper chargers, romantic candlelights, mix of glassware with mercury candle votives and teal olive oil vases, airplants and succulents native to Texas. Family heirlooms also played a part in our wedding with my parents 70’s champagne goblets and ring bearer pillow, my grandmother’s jewelry and my mom’s tennis bracelet.

Elegant Villa Wedding on a Rainy Austin Day

They say rain on your wedding day is good luck, and I think this rainy Austin wedding proves it because this couple lucked out with one truly gorgeous day. Planned by the lovely Pearl Events, every detail about this day is special thanks to incredible vendors like Austin CateringMarquee Rents, and Polkadots Cupcake Factory. See all the beauty captured by Tracy Enoch Photography in THE VAULT!

From Tracy Enoch PhotographyTaking place at the beautiful Villa Del Lago in Austin, Texas, Sasha and Shea’s wedding weekend began with a historic rain and flood event. Their initial plans called for an outdoor sunset ceremony overlooking breathtaking Lake Travis, with an outdoor dinner reception underneath cafe lights followed by dancing in the covered pavilion. Sasha and Shea didn’t miss a beat as plans changed and they embraced the weather, and the end result was a beautiful, cozy wedding set in the picturesque Texas hill country. As the rain finally cleared, the night concluded with a fireworks show that the groom orchestrated to surprise his new bride.

Houston Oaks Country Club Wedding

The vision? “Create a style that mixes the effortlessly chic outdoor California vibe with Southern charm in the setting of an unpredictable Texas summer,” which is exactly the kind of day Emily Moise of Keely Thorne Events + Bows and Arrows brought to life. And though a rain storm came through right as the vows were spoken, that didn’t dampen the love one bit. See the celebration through Kelli Elizabeth’s lens and a must-watch clip from 31 Films below!

From Keely Thorne Events… Holly came to me with a date, a photographer, the dress, and a desire for a unique one-of-a-kind wedding for 300 guests at the country club her fiancé’s family owned – a homey setting where they often spent weekends during their relationship. I knew quickly that her wedding style was an outdoor California wedding in Texas. Meaning, create a style that mixes the effortlessly chic outdoor California vibe with Southern charm in the setting of an unpredictable Texas summer.

Exactly one year out from the big day, as I began pondering plans for my new bride, I sat in a restaurant for an early dinner watching the streets of the Historic Heights District flood, and I just had a gut feeling. Holly, 40 min north of me at that very moment, says she sat on the club’s patio under a clear sky toasting to one year out with her fiancé because as she always says, “it never rains out here!” But as every planner should, from the beginning I had the conversations and logistics moving along for a Plan A, and an efficient Plan B. Though, little did I know, Holly had other plans.

I introduced Holly and her mother to the perfect vendors for me to collaborate with to create her look: Papellerie for her custom branding and stationery who set the tone for guests from the beginning with the wedding website and save-the-date all the way through the wedding and beyond to custom thank you notes; Bows and Arrows for all their Texas-California experience and airy eclectic floral design; and Events in Bloom to lay out the space and dress up the outdoors with their quality rentals, linens, chandeliers, and draping.

The couple being lovers of fun cocktails, we added The Grand Bevy to the mix of vendors since they are the original craft cocktail artists for events. The groom setup their favorite restaurant, Uchi, to provide a sushi station to mix in with the club’s southern inspired menu. Nadine Moon of Who Made the Cake designed the cake around the custom floral sketches used in the couple’s stationery..

Having already hired her talented photographer friend, owner of Kelli Elizabeth Photography, we were left needing film, which was a no brainer: 31 Films. Who were so dedicated to getting “the moment” that they lost a camera to the elements and still managed goosebump inducing ridiculous films to treasure.

Holly’s fiancé, Austin, was in charge of picking the band. He wanted a big party band that would pack the dance floor: thus I turned to Atlanta for their collection of show stopping bands. They hired Jessie’s Girl, who as usual, exceeded expectations.

For hair, Holly used her go-to stylist Karla from Therapy Salon. For makeup, I introduced her to Kristin Daniell who was the perfect calm demeanor artist with exquisite talent to make Holly shine all night long, no matter what…

Now it should be noted that the Spring 2015 wedding season, as it turns out, was one of the rainiest years for Texas to date, especially on weekends. Thanks El Nino!

Fast forward to wedding week: Monday brought Houston historic mass flooding (as in, our city made national news…) Thankfully the club and roads leading to it were ok. But we were thinking, ‘it can’t possibly rain again so soon after all of that!’ But rain was still in the forecast. So we had to listen to my trusty unbiased tent guy, Derek Widis owner of SPF Event Resources, whose gut was telling him it was going to rain. Thus, the lounge and dance floor area would now be under a clear tent instead of exposed to the oak trees above. So after getting an additional décor budget approval, I made a call to Alicia at Bows & Arrows and said, “We have to make this clear tent look like a Plan A; let’s bring ‘that under-the-oak trees feeling’ back!” and Alicia, plus her team, happily worked long into the final nights of set up to get it all done to perfection.

Now for the ceremony, Plan B was a private ceremony inside the club for only family and wedding party to attend at the original ceremony time of 6:30pm. Guests knew about this in advance as we included a details card in the invitation set that stated “If it rains on our wedding day, please join us for cocktail hour at 7pm instead and we will see you there as Mr. and Mrs.! – check our wedding website for updates!” Well… as I mentioned, Holly had different plans.

Day of I still didn’t know which ceremony plan to call. I constantly checked my trusted Weather Underground app for updates. Rain chance= 30%; now 80%; then 40%; now 80%; then 30%… total gamble. It would not make up its mind…and neither could I! But Holly could. Maria at the club came outside to tell me, “Holly wants to get married outside and said you won’t let her.” I laughed and said I hadn’t decided but hey it’s a gamble no matter what plan, so if she wants to decide instead of me, that’s fine! and went to tell Holly the good news. After all, it was her wedding, so ultimately, her choice. But of course that didn’t mean I stopped checking the weather…

Holly and Austin had their beautiful first look under the club’s oak trees and sunny sky above them followed by all of their group pictures before guests arrived. (Plan A based on sunset time and ability to let their family and wedding party go straight into reception). At 5:45pm, ushers began escorting guests down the long path under the trees. The ceremony was set with sounds from the string quartet and harpist surrounded by the club’s lake with an authentic 15th Century French Chapel as the backdrop.

But once I saw a giant yellow storm cell caving in around our location on the radar, I knew we had to start early; we had to start now! In my mind, I knew I just had to get the bride and groom to the altar before the sky opened up. Once at the altar, it would be out of my hands. So I radioed my assistants inside with the wedding party to line them up and send them out. It was 2.5 min walk from their location to the altar, clock ticking, storm-a-brewin’.

Family lined up next to me, but our quartet had to stop playing and cover their antique instruments as the rain drops lightly began. As soon as the wedding party line was approaching, I cued family to walk down the sprinkled aisle. Next wedding party: No time to pace them out, couples in single file line filtered down the aisle to their place. I turn back around expecting Holly and her dad to be approaching me and sweet Holly was a minute’s walk away waiting for me to give her Plan A’s cue to walk once Austin was turned around (a calming feeling for me knowing that in her happy mindset, all was going to plan). I motioned her with discretely speedy hand movements and. as she passed me then through the ceremony gates she had a huge smile on her face, here was their big moment.. And sure enough, as her strappy flats hit the aisle, thunder boomed for the first time that day.

During the very brief ceremony, the rain got harder and harder as the smiles and laughter got bigger and louder. As I stood, literally in the aisle holding and umbrella over Kelli and her camera, I thought (and think I even said out loud with a chuckle), “huh, it’s only water…it’s only water!” I then realized that when Holly decided to get married outside that day, she accepted that she might just get rained on in doing so, and that it was ok because it was all about getting married to Austin, in front of that chapel with however many guests were willing to get rained on too.

As the officiant quickly got to their vows, the rain drops were fast and large, and as he announced them husband and wife, the sky completely opened into a complete downpour. The newlyweds ran down the aisle laughing to the awaiting a golf cart to whisk them back inside. The club staff was ready for the wet guests with towels, hair dryers and hot food ready inside as they ran for cover. The strings, now protected under the tent, played during cocktail hour, followed by Jason Allen, a friend and country musician, on his acoustic guitar while the rain continued to pour around the tents.

After getting the couple dried off and fed dinner in the club’s beautiful, well-equipped locker room, they were off into the reception to joyfully celebrate alongside their guests. They enjoyed their first dance and dances with parents before they got on the mic to thank everyone for sticking it out with them on this oh-so-special day. The band came on for a 3 hour continuous set and all danced the night away. At the very end the band’s horns section led guests out to the front of the club to clear the tent of all guests, band, and staff so the couple could dance one private last dance before making their formal exit through sparklers. The bride later told me the wedding party stayed up with them until the wee hours continuing to celebrate and even had a fireworks show lit by the groom’s brother as a surprise.

Toned Arms Workout for a Sleeveless Wedding Dress

As a bride-to-be this is THE year I want to feel my absolute best, and since I may (or may not) be wearing a sleeveless wedding gown, toned arms are an absolute must on my daily to-do list. That said, if there was ever a time to go full force into my exercise routine, it’s right now during this bride-to-be, pre-wedding dress stage. To get started, I’m sharing a few of my favorite arm exercises below!

The best part? You can do these exercises while catching up on your favorite television shows, or while your pasta water comes to a boil (basically how I spend most evenings). That said, enjoy carrying on with your post-work routine while also getting some killer toned arms in the process!

For me, motivation comes in many forms and I fully believe in the power of a colorful sports bra. I’m constantly on the hunt for high quality, comfortable and trendy pieces and Outdoor Voices encompasses all of the above. Whether you’re running errands around town or hitting a high intensity spin class, you can’t go wrong with their leggings, crop top and hoodie combo!

Ready to get those sexy toned arms for your big day?! Okay gals, time to spill the details on my favorite arm workouts! I pulled this routine from my past personal training sessions and of course, the wonderful world of online fitness videos. Do 20 reps of each exercise and complete three rounds. (Note: If you’re beyond the 2lb weight phase, scoop up whatever weight suits your fitness level)

90 degree raise

Bicep curl

Overhead press

There you have it – my favorite workouts to achieve those beautifully toned arms certain to look incredible in a sleeveless gown! Do you have any other foolproof bride-to-be workouts? I would love to hear them, be sure to share below in the comments!

Romantic + Ethereal Pedernales Falls Inspiration Session

I’m rarely at a loss for words, but this inspiration session from Sophie Epton Photography seriously has me speechless. Those wild, bright blooms from Bristol Lane Florals. That dreamy lace BHLDN gown. And that can’t-take-my-eyes-off-it ring from Trumpet And Horn. They’re all working together to create one truly mesmerizing (and totally Pin-worthy) photo shoot. If you need me, I’ll be in THE VAULT admiring these beauties for hours to come.

From Sophie Epton Photography“But I love your feet only because they walked upon the earth and upon the wind and upon the waters, until they found me.” – Pablo Neruda

This incredible quote by Pablo Neruda was the basis of vision for our cliffside bridal inspiration, an ode to the incredible power of both love and the nature that surrounds us. Set amongst the jutting white bluffs and running waters of Pedernales Falls, we wanted to portray a bride who has traveled far away to a special place of Mother Nature, a haven for her mind to be quiet and reflect on life and devotion before her wedding day.

The grand scenery of Pedernales Falls provided both a magnificently beautiful yet peaceful backdrop of rugged earth, water and a bit of wind that was the perfect site for our bride to get lost in her own thoughts. The vivid, sumptuous colors of florals by Bristol Lane seen in both the bouquet, garland and floating petals represent the idea of a love that is bursting open like a blossom in the Spring, and provides the perfect pop of hues against the alabaster rock formations. Jessica Crowell recreated the Pablo Neruda quote on a textile banner, symbolizing the passion and devotion that is required of any long-term union, and a tangible reminder that our bride was able to hold on to during this time. The ethereal BHLDN Beau gown combined with the pearl headpiece worn by our bride further elevated the romantic feel of the shoot, and the stunning vintage engagement ring by Trumpet and Horn was the final piece de resistance of warmth and sparkle.

We hope this story provides inspiration for any future bride to take the time for themselves during their engagement to go out in the living world, de-stress, and think about the incredible commitment of love happening in their near future (and maybe have a few gorgeous photos taken along the way!)

Golds and bronzes were also used in abundance to contrast the deep berry tones. Fresh fruits were used as accents on the tables and in the floral arrangements. The cake was a holiday inspired red velvet naked cake with gold deer accent topper to tie into the deer mounts by the head table. The cake table was an antique sewing machine table provided by Vintage Indulgence. The cocktail tables ties were made of pure greenery bringing some of the outdoors inside.

Elegant Wedding at La Colombe d’Or Full of Old-World Glamour

For this art-loving couple, the best part of their wedding venue, La Colombe d’Or, wasn’t the stately wood paneling, extravagant chandeliers or the old-fashioned bar. It was the incredible art collection. And against this backdrop, the ivory and gold color scheme, lush flower arrangements and beautiful couple make this wedding a gorgeous work of art. See it all from Jenna McElroy in THE VAULT!

From The Bride…Andy and I wanted our wedding to have an elegant, old world feel, and we found that immediately at La Colombe d’Or. We loved the centuries old wood paneling and the dramatic chandeliers (ok….I loved the paneling and chandeliers, Andy liked the large, old fashioned bar). What really sold us, though, was the art! We love browsing galleries and museums, and La Colombe d’Or has the most incredible collection. Our décor, designed by Plants N Petals, centered around loose florals with lots of greenery for a romantic feel.

The most important thing to us (besides the ceremony, of course) was a fun and wild dance party. The Royal Dukes Band kept everyone on the dance floor all night long! We were so lucky that our amazing photographer Jenna got hundreds of candid shots to capture the shenanigans!

Floral-Filled Texas Summer Wedding

Texas weddings have kinda captured my heart lately and after seeing this beautiful bash captured by Julie Paisley, the love affair isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. With the talented Something To Celebrate leading the charges and The Flower Girl providing some seriously gorgeous florals, it was a wedding to remember – and to fill your Pinterest boards with. See it all in our VAULT right this way!

From the Bride… We met in midtown Houston, TX at the Dogwood bar, while I was in town visiting friends. I didn’t know it yet, but my father had passed away that same day. January 31, 2014. Looking back I think he pushed me towards Nick that night. Nick later gifted me with a bracelet engraved with the coordinates of where we met. Just shows how sweet of guy he is!
He also surprised me with the engagement. We had planned a trip to Disney World and my friends told me for months that was definitely when he was going to propose, so it wasn’t really on my radar. Then one day about a month before our trip he said he just wanted to go look for fun. While inside Robbins Brothers – The Engagement Ring Store in Houston (Galleria Area) he told me to pick one just like in Sweet Home Alabama!! I was so excited when I found the perfect ring! August 1, 2014.

Being a part of the wedding industry can be both a blessing and a curse when you are planning your wedding. I had help from great friends who really helped me refine my vision; even though it changed multiple times. Overall I knew I wanted it to be a traditional Texas wedding but still feel formal. I love pastel colors, especially purple, and wanted the day to be filled with flowers. So my friends Cari (our designer) and Kari (our florist) helped me come up with a vision that was everything I could imagine and more. Thankfully the venue has a great Texas ease about it; which my very laid back groom appreciated and helped tone down the formality of it all.

It was important to me to personalize our wedding. My father passed away the day Nick and I met, so we created a memory table for him that included a yellow rose boutonniere along with his cowboy hat, a photo of him and a matching photo of me. My mother-in-law also sewed the heart of one of his blue shirts near the heart of my gown. She also gave me a sterling silver pendant that my husband had given her before he was deployed with his monogram on it for “something borrowed” to tie onto my bouquet. I attached a charm with my father’s photo, as well as the lace from my mother’s wedding gown on to my bouquet. The groom’s cake was the University of Iowa stadium, where my husband went to college. The bartenders served personalized beer that was custom made and named for the event.

Our day was perfect and I’m so thankful for the images to relive the day over and over again.

From Julie Paisley… Aaryn and Nick were a breath of fresh air. It is so important for me to connect with my clients and this was so easy with the two of them. Aaryn and I shared many texts during the process and I loved how she shared all her ideas about her big day. Details were so important to her but at the same time she wanted the wedding to be down to earth and FUN and that it was. I loved being their photographer, they have a beautiful love story and clearly adore each other.

Elegant Villa Del Lago Fall Wedding

Let me be clear as I imagine there might be some confusion: this elegant affair took place in TEXAS! Overflowing with European beauty, bright blooms by Without Wax Katy and linens by La Tavola, it’s easy to think you’ve been transported to Spain. The Nichols captured every breathtaking moment, making our VAULT more colorful than ever – see it all right here!

From the Bride… Coming from traditional Spanish roots, both Miguel and I had envisioned a Spain-inspired Catholic wedding. We chose the beautiful hill country of Austin, TX for our reception because it seemed just about the closest we could find (in the US) to the countryside of Spain… plus Austin is just a blast! We felt like Spanish royalty celebrating under the pavilion of Villa Del Lago, outlooking the vast expanse of rolling hills and Lake Travis. The best moment was when Miguel and I looked out over the balcony, my veil gracefully flowing in the wind – we felt like King and Queen of the Hill Country Kingdom! Hah!

From a design perspective, deep autumnal tones brought in a warmth that we were looking for. Wherever possible, traditional laces were used to bring in a textural softness. Miguel’s last name,’Chavez’, means “keys” in Spanish, so, being the graphic designer I am, created a custom ‘key’ monogram for the event. This motif was present on so many elements – napkins, favors, menus, etc. The entire cocktail and dinner menu was a collaboration of autumnal flavors and traditional Spanish dishes.

Miguel could not stop smiling the ENTIRE ceremony and evening. I knew that he finally understood all of the work and stress that went into planning and that my design team and I had hit the nail on the head. Just seeing his big smile made my night. At one point in the evening I sat down quietly in the corner and just watched him from afar – he is so handsome!
