Elegant Wedding in Wynnewood

We love this timeless wedding – antique rings, subtle grays and greens, a fresh blanket of snow (not to mention a bold, peacock-blue to make everything else pop). No theme’s more fitting for these high school sweethearts, whose story spans years, states and life stages, their hometown ceremony and reception truly as beautiful as they are. Check out these images from Asya Photography, you can find the full gallery here.

From Asya PhotographyNickolas Bogdanovich and Julia McLaughlin first met as high school freshman at Delaware County Christian School in Newtown Square, PA in 2003. By their sophomore year, they had formed a friendship and soon started dating. After high school, Nickolas went to study at McGill University in Canada while Julia attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, but they remained friends and enjoyed returning to Philadelphia to see one another on their breaks. Unbeknownst to Julia, in March 2013 Nickolas asked her parents, James and Vivian McLaughlin, if he could ask Julia to marry him. After gasps, tears, and laughter, they said yes and Nickolas began hunting for just the right ring. He finally found a beautiful antique ring with a filigree setting that he knew Julia would love. He then set his mind to scheming up just the right surprise.

In May 2013, Nickolas told Julia that he was taking her on a surprise trip to celebrate her birthday. He drove her to Chestnut Hill and the two spent the day in search of little love notes hidden inside scallop shells that Nick had concealed around the town as part of an elaborate scavenger hunt. After they had found the last note, Nickolas suggested that they go by the Tyler Arboretum to see the gardens. There—when Julia thought all of the surprises for the day had been discovered—he proposed. Needless to say, she said yes! The pair then returned to Julia’s parents’ home to celebrate with her family, who—to her astonishment—had known of the plan all along.

Nickolas and Julia were married on January 4, 2014 at All Saints’ Church in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. It had snowed the day before so the church was covered in a stunning fresh blanket of snow. The ceremony was particularly moving to them as they made their commitment before God, their family, their friends, and their congregation. During the service, Julia’s sister and maid of honor, Laurel McLaughlin, sang Schubert’s Ave Maria and her brother and groomsman, Mark McLaughlin, played Bach’s Lute Suite No. 1 during communion. After the ceremony, the bridal party and guests made their way to the Racquet Club of Philadelphia for the reception. Many guests had braved the wintery weather, and Nickolas and Julia were so grateful that their family members and friends had traveled all the way from Canada, the Midwest, and Alabama to celebrate with them. Throughout the toasts, dances, and constant laughter, Nickolas and Julia reveled in the joy and love of the day. It was truly a precious one, and they look forward to many more of those days together.

From the Bride…  I tried on many dresses at several different shops in the area before hearing about Elizabeth Johns in Suburban Square. Elizabeth Johns is—bar none—the best wedding boutique in the area. The consultants made so much time for me and were also incredibly genuine in their desire to help me find just the right dress. When I tried on this dress, I loved the lace sleeves, the fitted-to-full shape, and the cathedral train, but I knew it was the right dress when my Mom started crying. My sister and I then started crying—and before we knew it the consultant even started crying! It was a very special moment, and I was amazed that I had found a dress more beautiful than I could have imagined.

Heather Potter from Cottage Flowers in Malvern did our flowers. She is truly a fantastic artist and captured my vision of a wintery wedding exquisitely. She met with me and my Mom several times, wanting to make sure her plans were just right (and, of course, they were gorgeous!). She also worked very closely with my Mom to help design the table settings and decorate the mantelpiece in the Racquet Club. I would recommend her to any future brides and grooms in a heartbeat.

We had CTO’s Fifth Avenue as our band and they were amazing. We requested that they play a mixture of old and new so that all of our guests could enjoy the dance floor. Fifth Avenue certainly delivered! We loved their mixture of Motown, Classics, and Top-40 songs, and our guests did too! We also appreciated that they learned the songs we wanted for our first dance and dances with our parents.

We are both pretty traditional and all along we described our vision for the day as “uniquely elegant” and “timeless”. We wanted to retain beautiful traditions but add some artistry and personal touches as well. The colors were a wintery peacock blue but we added juniper, grays, whites and greens to create a wintery look, particularly with the flowers. We also used a lot of candles (and I mean a LOT) at the reception to create a glowing, warm atmosphere. And last but not least, we loved our photographers! Especially, Asya—who even took a fall on a slippery patch of ice to get a beautiful shot of us running away from the church!

Art Deco Ballroom Wedding in Philly

You can’t go wrong incorporating an era of luxury, glamour, and most importantly, progress, into your big day. Which is why we’re so taken with this Philly couple’s amazing Art Deco wedding. Hotel Monaco provided a perfect backdrop for the modern affair with era-appropriate accents like gold sunbursts (and that dress!) laced throughout. Photographer Jennifer Sosa was there to capture the stunning event.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/80280406 600 338]

From the Bride… When Matt and I first went to see the Hotel Monaco, it was still a construction site. We squeezed past ladders and tried to visualize how the ballroom would look when it was painted, but we knew – this modern, quirky space was where we would get married. And this was before we saw the showstopper rooftop bar to be used for cocktail hour! The deco-influenced space was our jumping off point for our vision for the wedding and our vendors brought it to life better than we could ever have imagined. We tried to incorporate the deco theme in a subtle, contemporary way: sunburst patterns on our wedding cake, a letter-pressed deco design on our invitations, and the beautiful beadwork on the Jenny Packham dress I fell in love with. Our ceremony was interfaith, so we mixed and matched traditions in a way that felt right for us – we used my mother’s wedding veil as the fabric for our chuppah, we did a unity candle ceremony, our cousins shared readings, (including an excerpt from “Plato’s Symposium” that Matt had originally shared with me in a 1st anniversary card years before), and we were married by the judge that he worked for. Since we would be moving back to NYC days after our wedding, the night was also our farewell to Philadelphia. We loved the map of the city that our invitation designers used in our invitation suite so much, that we had it blown up and used it as a guestbook. We even sent our guests off at the end of the night with some special Philly treats – water ice and mini soft pretzels! It was an amazing feeling to see all the planning and little moments come together, but in the end, the best part was having all our beautiful friends and family come together to celebrate our new start as husband and wife.

Elegant Philadelphia Country Club Wedding

The best way to describe this Philly affair? Classic with a twist. A gorgeous, pop of hot pink twist, to be specific. Morrissey Photo captured this wildly elegant labor of love, and just in case you want more we’ve got a WHOLE gallery waiting right here.

From the Bride… The inspiration for our wedding was to really capture the past, present and future and Dave and My life. To really make it about the important and special things in our lives. My mother had my clutch made out of my grandmother’s wedding dress and a brooch she used to wear. My grandmother passed away two years ago so this was really special for me to have a part of her there. I also was wearing her wedding ring. I had all my bridesmaids belts made by one of my vendors who i worked with when i was a buyer. This was a special touch to make their dresses unique and a nod to my job.

All of the flowers were done by my uncle. The flower company has been in my mother’s family for 3 generations now. On the candy table, we brought candy from South Africa and Pittsburgh to share a part of our background. There was a Steeler’s helmet cake for Dave’s love of the team and our cake was made from a friend of ours who is a master pastry chef at the top restaurant in Philadelphia called R2L. The cake stand even came from New Orleans. We had wine brought in from South Africa, and on each table we had wine notes detailing the trip Dave and I took there with my family and about each wine. The men got dressed at the shooting lodge while the women got dressed at my parent’s house. We had our monogram on everything, the menu, seating cards, programs, on the wall and napkins. we also had a little bit of a LOVE theme that was on the ice sculpture, mugs that were the ladies gifts at the end of the night and in the ladies bathroom.

We had an eye chart on our picture table that represented what Dave does for a living. The men’s gift at the end of the night was a small bottle of Amarula which is a sweet South African after dinner drink. There was a cigar bar with Ashton cigar’s. Our special drink came from our favorite speak easy in Philadelphia Dave and I always went to. We named it the Jetty since that is where he proposed to me in Avalon.

Some of my highlighted moments was when the doors to the church opened and I saw Dave for the first time. The time i got to spend at my parent’s house with my bridesmaids getting ready before the wedding. Also reading Dave’s letter on my bed at my parent’s house. Our first dance and seeing all our friends and family on the dance floor together having an amazing time. The speeches were also very special to me since everyone talked about Dave and I before we knew each other and then talked about us when we were together. It was great to hear new stories and old ones.

Romantic Wedding at the Colonial Dames in Philadelphia

Garden meets glam with a little DIY thrown in for good measure – this wedding captured by Redfield Photography is the whole shebang. Tucked inside this beautiful gallery by Redfield Photography is detail after detail of darling personal and elegant touches that will no doubt make your heart melt, so join us in swooning over every moment right here.

From the Bride…My husband and I were married exactly seven-and-a-half years from the day we started dating. College sweethearts, we had achieved so many milestones together: college degrees, first jobs, my graduation from law school and passing the bar, promotions, adopting the most amazing puppy, and the icing on the cake: our engagement and unforgettable wedding.

Once we visited the National Society of the Colonial Dames, we knew it was the perfect venue for our big day. It is an oasis inside center city Philadelphia: the building maintains a rich, historical character and the outside garden transports you away from the chaos of the city. Playing off the gorgeous blue walls of the Colonial Dames’ main room, we chose pale pink and gold for our wedding colors. The theme of our wedding was romantic and elegant: lace, chiffon bridesmaid dresses, lush flowers, simple stationery. We wanted to complement and enhance the character of the space.

While we quickly decided on the general theme of our wedding, many of the details did not come into place until a few weeks before the wedding (I do not recommend, ladies!). Because I am incredibly indecisive, I looked at, without exaggeration, over 250 pages of photographs on Style Me Pretty to achieve our look (along with countless magazines and pinterest pins!). After seeing styles from other real weddings, we decided that we wanted our bridal party to complement one another, but not to look exactly the same. For the maids, each got to choose a different style, short blush chiffon J.crew dress, and wore tan or pale gold shoes. For the groomsmen, each wore their own navy suit, cognac shoes, and a tie with blush and navy. Given the shade of pink, we ultimately purchased more than 30 ties (2 of which were purchased the day before the wedding!) before we were able to find the right colors! For our flowers, I fell in love with gorgeous pink and coral garden bouquets that were featured in a Style Me Pretty spread. We had our florist modify the shades to complement our wedding colors. Already way over budget, we made our own centerpiece vases from gluing together bowls and candlesticks from the Dollar Tree. It cost less than $2.50/centerpiece all said and done!

We also tried to add our own personal touches where possible. I created and printed all of our stationery myself based on a template I fell in love with. Rather than hire a calligraphist, we asked my mother-in-law to address our invitations and escort cards. My mother and I put together welcome bags for our out-of-town guests, which included my husband’s and my favorite snacks. For an alternative guest book, I cut paper hearts for our guests to sign (which will later be framed and displayed when we buy our first home). Our wedding favors were homemade cupcakes using a special recipe from my husband’s late-nana. To ensure our beloved pup was part of our day, we also had a friend create large cardboard cut outs of his adorable face that our guests used in the Photo Booth. Last, with the help of my mother-in-law, I had a handkerchief in my husband’s clan’s tartan made with the hope that our children and our children’s children will each carry it on their own wedding day.

Overall, our day was filled with so much love and happiness. We had just shy of 100 guests: our most important people. It was a priority of ours to have an intimate day. Our ceremony was held in the back garden and included classical music that was beautifully performed by the Philadelphia String Quartet. Although very nerve-wracking, we recited our own vows before we exchanged rings and officially became Mr. and Mrs. Wanting to maximize use of the outdoor space, the cocktail hour was also held in the garden. Despite the chill in the air, our guests enjoyed drinks and hors d’oeuvres that showcased a compromise between my husband and my culinary tastes: comfort and foodie. Our caterer, J. Scott Catering, did an impeccable job in creating and executing the amazing bites and ensuring the day ran smoothly. Following a delicious dinner, we and our guests danced the night away.

I believe our photos really capture the love we share with each other and our family and friends. We could not have asked for a more perfect day!

Homemade Vanilla Infused Honey

With a little help from Juniper & Dash and Alexandra Whitney, honey gets a delicious facelift with the addition of vanilla bean. Can you think of a better combination? I certainly cannot! And this little nugget is so easy, and so delicious, it needs to make its internet rounds. And if it hasn’t already occurred to you, I have a good feeling mom would go nutty for the stuff this Mother’s Day!

From Juniper & Dash… I am obsessed with infusing things, combining two flavors to create a super flavor, perfection! This vanilla infused honey is so yummy I just kept eating it with a spoon. It wasn’t until I made the second batch that I actually got around to using it in tea, on bread, in a cocktail! These are now my go to hostess gift and will definitely be going out to the moms this Mother’s Day!

Vanilla Infused HoneyHoney gets a delicious facelift
prep time

cook time
total time
5 Minute/s
Serves 0Ingredients
  • Jar Local Honey
  • 1-2 Vanilla beans
  • Airtight container (the one I used was 7.4oz, try to keep around 1 cup}
  • Sharp knife
  • Honey spoon or chopstick for stirring
  • Cutting board
Instructions
  1. Pour honey into airtight container
  2. On the cutting board take one vanilla bean and slice halfway through the bean’s skin
  3. Spread the bean open and take the knife and scrape the beans into the honey
  4. Use the honey spoon and blend the beans into the honey
  5. Wipe off rim and seal container
  6. Vanilla beans will separate from honey the longer it sits. So stir well before serving.
  7. NOTE: When infusing honey most herbs must be removed from honey after sitting for 2-3 weeks. Vanilla honey is ready to serve immediately. Vanilla is one of the few spices that don’t need to be removed from honey before serving. So if you choose to make other infused honey’s make sure to refer to safety instructions.

Gold + Sparkly Kimmel Center Wedding

Very rarely is it that a wedding comes across my desk and stops me in my tracks for hours. I rework my own wedding plans (said wedding happened almost 5 years ago) while dreamily flipping through the gallery. Today, it’s happened. Lauren Fair Photography captured a wedding that is gold and sparkly, beautiful purple blooms, and a couple who looks like they are the happiest couple on earth. I’m enamored.

From the photographer… Classy + beautiful. That’s the two words that come to mind when thinking back on Rose Anna + Will’s STUNNING Philly wedding. They are the sweetest couple ever, with so many wonderful family + friends – not to mention impeccable taste! I was mildly obsessed with Rose Anna’s Jenny Packham gown and sparkly bridesmaid dresses, and when paired with Sullivan Owen’s drop-dead gorgeous florals, they looked good enough to eat.

Autumn Inspired Philadelphia wedding

This wedding is my everything today. Seriously, if I had to pick a favorite today, this would be it. Because not only is it stylish as all get out and filled with STUNNING florals from Sullivan Owen but it’s also filled with so much love I can barely stand it. It’s all captured in a way by Siousca Photography that makes me want to cry the happiest of tears, and you can see it all here.

From Siousca PhotographyI’d like to share this intimate fall wedding that I shot this past year. Both the wedding and reception were held in a industrial-chic restored textile mill just outside of Philadelphia. The floral details had a beautiful autumn woodland theme created by Sullivan Owen. She used lots of colorful fall leaves in the brides bouquet and reception centerpieces…unlike anything I’ve seen before. There was no bridal party, only the couples three sons.

Philadelphia Wedding at The Old Mill

This Philadelphia wedding at the The Old Mill captured beautifully by Asya Photography warms my heart right up. Not only is it gorgeous (hello stunning bouquet from Amaranth), but it’s also filled with that kind of obvious love that makes me weak in the knees, and you can see every sweet moment right here.

From the Bride…Nick and I met after a Jack Johnson Concert in the parking lot of the then “Tweeter Center” in Camden, New Jersey while sitting in traffic and after my car batter died and had to be jumped. Nick approached my car and told me that I had the prettiest eyes he had ever seen and told me I was cute. We exchanged numbers, texted, and hung out a few times for about 2 months then went on a trip to Riviera Maya together and the rest is HISTORY!

The Dress: AHHHH, the dress!!! I always knew that I wanted a LACE dress, because that is “so me” (everyone who knows me well says that). I found a picture of this dress and fell in love with it. I did a lot of research on this dress and called around and hunted down who had it….. The first dress boutique I went to was Bijou Bridal…. The first dress I tried on was the Enzoani Diana Dress (which I fell in love with). I also tried on about 10 other dresses that day, and about 20 other dresses over the next week or so….. Nothing fit or felt like or looked like the Diana…. The shape, the straps, the neckline, and the detail on the belt—- I knew this was the ONE, especially for the venue that we chose! My mom, her good friend Charlene(who is like family to me), and my best friend since the 2nd grade Liz came with me on multiple occasions to support my decision!

The Cake: We fell in love with the tiny little family owned bakery when we went to our tasting. David, the owner was super friendly and accommodating. We tried about 12 different cake and icing combinations and loved that fact that we could get several different flavors all in one cake for our wedding. We chose a layer of chocolate/vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream and fresh strawberries in between, banana walnut with an amazing cream cheese icing, and red velvet with that same amazing cream cheese icing in the middle. What makes this cake unique? Our cake was unique because I never have been to a wedding with the different, yet simple icing design that we chose. I feel like most weddings these days have super formal, fondant cakes which I knew I didn’t want! I loved how our cake turned out!

Music: We had our musician friend David Duong (aka Phat Asian) play our ceremony music which was handpicked by Nick and I. We had him play a mix of Beatles and Jack Johnson Love songs as guests arrived. We also asked Dave to learn Jack Johnson’s “Angel” because Nick said that the words reminded him of me, and we hold Jack in a special place in our hearts because we actually met at a Jack Johnson concert in 2008. Our DJ’s name was Binh Nguyen and we gave him a list of all of our favorite songs to play throughout the night including everywhere from motown to Jason Mraz to Miley Cyrus. Our guests definitely had no problem working up a sweat on the dance floor!

Flowers: Amaranth in Narberth. I absolutely LOVED working with Loretta. I met with her about 10 times before the wedding and she probably was so sick of me by the time the wedding weekend came to be! I had a vision from day 1… I wanted color in my bouquet and I wanted blueish green succulents in there somehow to pick up on the color of the girls dresses. I kept tweaking exactly what I wanted adding more color and texture (then feathers) each time I met with Loretta. I also designed the boutineers for the guys— I took a few ideas I saw on Pinterest along with my own twist and Loretta made it happen. I also purchased all of my own center piece lanterns for 1/2 of the tables, and for the other 1/2 I purchased large mason jars and glued a pretty ribbon to the rim of them. the bridesmaids each put their amazing bouquets in the mason jars after the ceremony. My bouquet was magical! I will never forget the moment when I saw my flowers for the first time while I was still getting ready, I knew it was a sign that the rest of my day was going to be as perfect and magical as my bouquet looked!

The day was rustic, warm, personal, magical and picture perfect. Perfect temperature/weather for the beginning of November….. Loved how my hair and makeup turned out, ALL of the bridesmaids looked absolutely gorgeous and the groomsmen all looked amazing in their Vera Wang Suits! I think that our wedding felt intimate even thought there were over 100 people.

I had a vintage gold heart pin that belonged to my godmother, my aunt Marie, who passed away a few months ago and I attached it to my bouquet alond with a heart charm that my former babysitter and lifetime friend, Lisa gave to me. My something blue was a heart cut out from one of my dad’s old shirt and sewn to the inside of my dress. I basically designed my bouquet and the guy’s boutineers with some inspiration from a combination of different bouqets I had seen before. I hand stamped and decorated the bridesmaid’s gift boxes and bags.

Fairmount Park Horticulture Center Wedding

Oh my goodness, is this wedding crazy gorgeous.  Like so crazy gorgeous, I am not even sure what to say. It’s like everything I absolutely adore about weddings (vibrant colors, lush blooms, adorable duos) all wrapped up in one stunning affair held at the always-amazing Horticulture Center In Fairmount Park.  In other words, it’s pure perfection captured by Asya Photography and you can see it all right here.

Romantic

From the Bride… We got married and had our reception at the Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park. The Horticulture Center was actually the only venue that we looked at. A close friend had seen the venue the week before us and told me that I would definitely get married there; she turned out to be right. We loved the venue so much that we immediately put a hold down for an autumn date and cancelled any other venue visits we had planned. We loved that the Horticulture Center is inside the city limits of Philadelphia but feels so removed and serene. The grounds are huge and we knew they’d provide for gorgeous photos. We wanted to get married in one of the gardens outside, but knew our backup option, inside the display garden of the greenhouse, was an amazing second choice (so much so that we even considered it as a first choice). The small lush greenhouse felt like a magical secret garden with tropical plants, and turned out to be the perfect place for our cocktail hour, with the sun lowering in the sky overhead and fountains trimmed with votive candles at twilight. Our outdoor ceremony was stunning, as our guests had a view of the fountains behind us and the sun-setting picture perfect behind us as we said our vows. Our reception was inside the larger greenhouse in the succulent room. With white lights and plants hanging from the beams, it was a gorgeous setting accented by simple white flowers and candles on the tables. We hung photos of our parents and grandparents wedding days on the lattice wall behind our sweetheart table. All in all, the venue transitioned perfectly with the greenhouse windows, from daylight outside during our ceremony to a twilight cocktail hour and reception under a starlit sky.

We picked a beautiful venue that spoke for itself and added some simple flowers and personal touches. Because there was so much green in the venue we chose dove gray tablecloths and white flowers with pops of green on the table numbers and menus. The color showed up in the beautiful bouquets.
The biggest DIY project that we did was our escort cards. With the help of Dan’s sister we made and canned over 100 jars of homemade applesauce that served as escort cards. We loved the idea of incorporating autumnal elements into the wedding, like apple cider and pumpkin cheesecake. We wanted to do something homemade and I love to cook, so the applesauce seemed really fitting. After the wedding was over our guests had something to remind them of our special day. Many of them called us for weeks afterwards to tell us how much they loved the applesauce… maybe we have a future business!

We looked at a few bakeries but fell in love with Bredenbeck’s in Chestnut Hill. They had so many delicious choices it was really difficult to decide. We chose to have one display cake as well as two additional sheet cakes, which meant 3 flavor combinations: almond pound cake with nutella filling, chocolate chip pound cake with cannoli filling, and butter pound cake with caramel filling. We had little boxes for our guests to take extra cake home, and every single piece went. Our guests told us that this wasn’t wedding cake because it was simply too good. Bredenbeck’s recreates your top tier on your one-year anniversary (rather than us having to store it in the freezer for an entire year), and we can’t wait to savor that nutella filling again.

I tried on dresses a few times, and found it was difficult to decide because every single dress was gorgeous and I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted. I went shopping with my mom in Philly and Baltimore (where I’m from) and found a dress I loved but felt like something was a little off—mostly I think it was more trendy than “me” and I wanted to look like myself on my wedding day. My sister-in-law convinced me to try on some more form fitting dresses because I started running a few years ago and she thought I should show off my figure that I’d worked so hard on through endurance running. My maid of honor came with me on a final shopping trip when I found my dress. It was classic with special details and figure flattering. I brought my mom, mother in law, and sister in law back to the store (Bridals by Danielle) to see the dress, and when they all got emotional I was completely confident in my decision. The veil with lace edging was the icing on the cake. I got a lot of compliments and absolutely loved my dress!

I saw the shoes I eventually purchased for my wedding on Style Me Pretty. They were Vera Wang Lavender Label but from last season and were sold out everywhere. They were exactly what I was looking for so a friend helped me hunt them down to a Nordstrom Rack location relatively close to home. They were perfect to me—peep toe flats with beautiful detailing. Half-way through the reception I changed into my sparkly silver Tom’s, which were also a gift to all of the bridesmaids.

Our very good friend’s dad made my engagement ring, as well as both of our wedding rings. The center stone in my engagement ring was from my great-grandmother and Dan had it set in an antique style setting, which was exactly what I envisioned. I used my paternal grandmother’s wedding band during the ceremony and wear it along with a second band that Mark from Engagement Rings Direct made for me. The second band is a diamond and sapphire infinity band. I really wanted unique engagement and wedding jewelry, and find that not many people my age use sapphires. My maternal grandmother used to wear a diamond and sapphire ring that was unfortunately lost at some point; my band reminds me of her. I also wore diamond and sapphire earrings of my mom’s and a diamond teardrop necklace that was my maternal grandmother’s. Additionally I pinned an antique cameo pin on my bouquet that was my paternal grandmother’s. Even though neither of my grandmothers are alive, I very much felt their presence at the wedding as I was so fortunate to wear many of their heirlooms.

A family friend, Nancy, did our flowers. Nancy owns Unforgettable Affairs and stopped working as a florist full time several years ago, but still does a few events a year. We knew she would do an amazing job but she really exceeded our expectations. The bouquets, boutonnières, and centerpieces were exactly what we were looking for. The simple centerpieces surrounded by candlelight were the perfect complement to the already beautiful and floral Horticulture Center.

It’s hard to narrow it down to just one thing but there are definitely a few stand out moments. Our first look was incredibly emotional and beautiful; we didn’t talk to each other at all after we went to bed the night before the wedding and it just felt like there was a lot of build up to that moment. Our first look was on a picturesque and quiet side street in our neighborhood. As I walked up the street to greet my groom, one of the groomsmen stood off to the side playing some of our favorite songs on guitar. Tears of happiness streamed down my face and I felt like I was in a dream.

The weather was definitely a memorable component of the day—I had secretly hoped for 80 degrees but the week earlier it had been incredibly cool so I bought a cardigan just in case. Luckily it turned out to be 85!

During the ceremony when our best man and maid of honor walked down the aisle, the best man Alex, who also gave a hilariously memorable toast later in the night, walked right up to Dan and gave him a big kiss on the cheek, one of Dan’s favorite moments of the day.

We first started looking for a ketubah about 6 months before the wedding. We really wanted to get something custom designed that incorporated special elements about our relationship, including our summer camp. We were having a hard time finding an artist we liked that also fit our budget. I started to look on Etsy for artists and kept coming across designs I liked by the same artist so I finally clicked on her shop to learn more about her. It turns out it was one of our friends from camp! She is now working in New York as a ketubah artist and makes stunning watercolor Ketubahs (thepaintedketubah.com). We had a few skype meetings with her and gave her some really basic ideas of important elements and she ended up designing the most gorgeous ketubah. It includes a picture of the chapel at our camp, the pine trees that are omnipresent in the Poconos, and succulents because our reception was in the succulent room. There are tiny corners that are images of the night sky at camp; one of them contains the opening lyric of an old camp song and reads: “We went away when we were very young, to find the person that we would become”.

Our ceremony was really important to us, so we spent a lot of time planning with our rabbi and including traditions that were meaningful to us. One tradition we really wanted to include was havdallah. This ceremony marks the separation between Shabbat and the rest of the week. In this case it also marked the separation between our old lives and our new life as husband and wife. During the ceremony a beautiful braided candle is used that burns brightly because it has multiple wicks. We asked all of our camp friends to participate in this part of the ceremony and they each held a braided candle. It was really beautiful and we felt enveloped in the love of this community. We also took havdallah as an opportunity to turn around and face all of our guests. It was so wonderful to truly engage with everyone during this incredibly intimate moment, being able to give and receive smiles from our favorite people in the world.

During the reception we just loved all the dancing. The horah was terrifying, joyous, and exhilarating all at the same time. Towards the end of the night there was a catwalk dance-off. At the very end of the night our guests cheered for one more song and the band played “Shout”; our friends surrounded us as things got more energetic and we ended the night with friends dancing and singing around us as we danced our butts off, smiling and enjoying every single second of it.

From the Bride…I grew up in Wayne, PA and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. I currently am in my second year working with Philly Cru doing campus ministry at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University. I live in Philadelphia’s Chinatown with Corey, and am involved at liberti church east in Fishtown. I love any red velvet flavored treat and strong coffee.

Corey grew up in New Rochelle, NY and also graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in May 2013, with a Bachelor of Science in Bio Engineering. He’s in his first year working with Philly Cru and is involved at liberti church east. Corey enjoys exploring Philadelphia and sampling dark beer.

Corey and I met at Penn, where we were both involved in Cru as students. In fall of 2010 (Corey’s sophomore year, my junior year) we began a deep friendship that endured through my semester abroad in New Zealand in Spring 2011. Over time it became apparent to both of us that our friendship had the potential to become a long lasting commitment. On a cold January night in 2012 (Corey’s junior year and my senior year), 16 months after we first met, Corey took me out for dessert on our first date. In May of 2013, after two and a half years of wonderful friendship, Corey decided to take the step to make it a lifelong one and asked me to marry him..

On May 3, 2013 Corey came over with a bouquet of yellow lilies and took me out to an early dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, Jones. After dinner Corey suggested a walk on the Ben Franklin bridge so we could watch the sunset behind the Philly skyline (my favorite view in the city). Right as the sun was setting Corey got down on one knee, pulled a custom-designed rose gold ring out of his shirt pocket and asked me to marry him. When I said yes, we shared our first kiss. After Corey proposed, he took me to Talula’s Gardens for drinks to celebrate. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed cocktails in their beautiful outdoor garden area. It was lovely and so romantic!

My vision for the day was to have the wedding, reception, and decor display the things that Corey and I love, to reflect our personalities, and to invite our guests into that. Fall is my favorite season, so it was really a joy to have the wedding in November even though that’s not a very popular time to get hitched. Also, Corey and I have come to really love Philadelphia, in spite of its obvious brokenness – this is a big part of our story as a couple. So, it was a no-brainer to have the wedding and reception in the city itself, although I grew up in the suburbs of Philly. Our church, liberti, is also a place of great meaning for both of us, so having both the ceremony and reception in the warehouse where the church meets was really important too.

I think there is often beauty where we least expect it – at least this is what I’ve found in Philadelphia – so it was part of my vision to incorporate splashes of beauty into an urban, weathered, industrial environment. I chose my favorite colors for our palette – mint, mustard, blush, and pumpkin – and chose to stick with a simple, clean, antique industrial feel. We even had red velvet cupcakes for dessert, one of my personal favorites. During the ceremony, we had two of our siblings read passages from the Bible that you don’t normally hear at a wedding, ones that talk about how to love others well and how to live in relationship with people in a loving way. It was a neat way to share some of our values with our guests in that way. I also walked down the aisle to “Processional (Mason Jar remis)” by one of my favorite artists, Josh Garrels. Before my bridesmaids and I processed in, we also included each one of our immediate family members in the processional, because our families are of such great importance to Corey and I. I’m really overjoyed with how the ceremony, reception, and decor came together. I feel like our guests were able to truly see, experience, and connect with the things that we deeply love.

A piece of advice I wish someone had shared with me is: don’t feel guilty or silly if your wedding day emotionally overwhelms you (to the point where it actually feels relieving to leave the party)! It truly is a wonderful, beautiful day. But it is jam-packed with emotionally intense experiences – committing your life to another person, seeing all the people you love in one place at one time, getting to speak with all those people, having tons of pictures taken of you, being the focus of many people’s attention for several hours in a row, etc. Your emotions feel a little heightened all day, so looking forward to resting from that level of excitement isn’t bad. It’s even okay if you need to take a couple minutes during the reception to just stand outside with your sister, friend, or new husband and escape the spotlight for a bit. Do what you need to do to enjoy the special day/evening, even if that means taking a quick second alone!

Vintage + Modern Philadelphia Wedding at Front & Palmer

When modern meets vintage in downtown Philadelphia, this is what happens.  A drop-dead gorgeous day planned to perfection by Proud To Plan with amazing decor from Maggpie Vintage and one insanely beautiful moment after another captured by Alison Conklin. It’s basically a dream come true in every way possible (believe you me) and you can soak in every lovely moment right here.

And a little something special from Tree Of Life?  Yes, please.

From the Bride… Sal and I had a long-term romance, meeting in college and growing together as we began our professional lives in separate cities. Distance did not deter our seven and a half year romance. After a special surprise engagement in none other than Disney World (my favorite), a summer 2013 wedding came to fruition.

While our taste is similar, we tend to vary on overall design elements (myself being drawn to more of a whimsical/vintage inspired décor and Sal slightly more contemporary). We knew we wanted to blend our styles together for this special day. We set out looking for a soft romantic setting for the ceremony. Our dream was realized as soon as we saw the beautiful hidden gem in the Morris House Hotel’s garden setting. Who knew such a beautiful setting was present in the middle of Philadelphia’s busy historic district? Morris House Hotel’s serene surrounding with flourishing greenery makes anyone feel like they are miles away. The beauty was only enhanced at this venue by the ever-so-talented Maggie Farrell of Maggpie Vintage, with an amazing display of vintage décor to create a delightful ambiance for guests as soon as they arrived. The stunning floral creations of Sullivan Owen and her team were captivating and added such beauty to the garden-esque environment. Guests were treated to the lovely vocals and music provided by Sharon Sable and the E. Shawn Qaissaunee Ensemble. A dual religious ceremony was enjoyed by all and Sal and I left under a flourish of glitter and confetti thrown by our guests. We are still finding glitter in shoes and suit jackets today.

After a brief set back from a venue cancellation nearly two months before the wedding, we stumbled upon the industrial chic warehouse setting of Front & Palmer. Fortunately, they had availability and a wonderful team that came to our rescue to help us put the pieces back together (perhaps better than ever). Front & Palmer’s beautiful features of high ceilings, unique light fixtures, white washed warm brick walls and original hardwood floors add so much character but, allow a couple to transition the space into whatever atmosphere they wish to create. The team at Proud to Plan helped lead the overall planning process and make our special day run as smooth as possible, they were such a joy to work with! The venue was transformed into a romantic setting to pull in the soft garden feel from earlier in the day. Once again, the talents of Maggpie and Sullivan Owen, along with lighting from Synergetic Sounds, and fun stationery from Loveleigh Invitations helped set the tone. We were lucky enough to get to work with the genuine and wonderfully talented Alison Conklin to capture our day with her unique eye, as well as Tree of Life’s videography to capture so many memorable moments.

Ultimately, our planning process was a bit… unconventional. However, Sal and I look back upon this experience with the most magnificent memories. We feel incredibly fortunate to not only have had our closest family and friends by our side to share in this great memory but are also truly honored to have worked with the vendor team we did. Without them, this would not have been possible. They absolutely made our dream a reality and we will remain forever grateful!

Tented Backyard Colmar Wedding

Call me predictable but I love a backyard wedding, all thanks to Father of the Bride. And when the backyard is this grand, it’s my favorite way to start the day. Susan Beard Design captured a day so beautiful, I’ll be spending my day right here in the gallery!

From the stunning bride…  Jen and Brian met at Georgetown University in the Fall of 2004 (Brian a sophomore, Jen a Freshman)! They began officially dating in April of 2005 so hit the 8 year mark prior to their June 8th wedding! On May 26th, 2013 Brian got down on one knee during a bike trip over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California! They continued on the trip celebrating at vineyards all over Sonoma and Napa Valley. Jen is a Buyer at Bloomingdale’s and Brian is an Associate Investment Banker at Credit Suisse. They currently live together in the West Village of New York City.

Jen cannot imagine a more wonderful place to grow up than in her 100 year old stone home (know as Colmar) in the mainline of Philadelphia. As fate may have it, Brian’s grandmother lives just ten minutes from Jen’s family and so the area became a popular destination for the couple to spend time with the family and take a break from busy city life. Growing up with two sisters, The Donohoe family home was always buzzing with girls running around the 3 acre estate which include a pool and tennis court. Whether it was a fashion show, a pool party, a game of dress up, tag or tennis, the last three decades flooded this home with wonderful memories of a loving, happy family and childhood. Jen and Brian found themselves lucky to be given the opportunity to not only share with their loved ones such a beautiful place that has been so special to them both but to make their first memory as husband and wife in a place that so clearly embodies the spirit of love and family. As the pictures clearly indicate it was no doubt the happiest day of both Jen and Brian’s life.

The backyard is filled with beautiful, formal gardens inspiring an elegant garden party theme. Envisioned as a romantic and lush garden-chic affair, combining casual garden elements (such as wooden farm tables in the tented dinner) with formal details such as silver vases, draped tenting and hanging chandeliers. The black tie optional dress code injected formality to the concept of a backyard wedding. The evening began with cocktails around the pool and gardens followed by a seated dinner and dancing on the family’s tented tennis court.

American Swedish Historical Museum Wedding

There are the pretty weddings and then there are the real, pretty weddings. I’m not talking extra pretty (though this one is especially gorgeous) I’m talking real. Real, feel the love, laugh the laughs, grab the tissues thanks to Peach Plum Pear Photography’s captures, real. The kind of wedding that puts a permagrin on your face for the rest of the day.

From the photographer… We are so excited to share Julia and Aaron’s amazing wedding! Our day started at Loews Hotel in Philadelphia, where Julia and her “ladies of honor” were getting ready (and having fun!) After that we took a cab to FDR Park in South Philadelphia (we loved that Julia was singing along to the radio in the cab!) to walk around and take some photos of Julia and Aaron and their bridal party. FDR Park is a great location for photos, and we were especially excited about shooting at the FDR Skatepark that is under I-95. Julia and Aaron had their ceremony at the American Swedish Historical Museum, followed by cocktail hour and reception outside of the museum. Delicious food, great music, good vibes and lots of dancing made for a very special celebration. After the reception was over, Julia and Aaron and their friends went for an EPIC subway ride to get to their after party. It was an incredible ending to their celebration with playing guitars, singing and dancing on the Broad Street subway. Congratulations Julia and Aaron! And thanks for being awesome.

From the lovely couple… When you break it down, it’s simple. We wanted a meaningful yet non-traditional ceremony and an evening of celebration, eating, and dancing with all of our dearest. Okay… so maybe not so simple. But we (read: mostly Julia) had envisioned a few details from the get-go: a bountiful summer buffet complete with a whole roast pig and strawberry rhubarb pie, decorations of spring peonies and garden globe lights, and musical performances by our talented friends and family. There was definitely a homemade, quirky, and intimate feel to the day that felt very “us”, and we cannot express the gratitude we have for our family and friends who contributed in some way to the festivities, from singing to sewing to shlepping. Mother Nature was kind, and we had a perfect night in South Philly. And the Broad Street subway ride back to Center City was one for the ages.”

Philadelphia Wedding from La Petite Fleur Weddings and Events

This darling day hits all of my wedding sweet spots… it’s romantic, stunningly gorgeous and chock-full of whimsy.  A bloom-filled paradise crafted by the ever-talented La Petite Fleur Weddings and Events with some of the coolest details you will ever lay your eyes upon.  Think tea cups, vintage books and china table numbers and you haven’t even begun to crack the awesomeness.  See it all captured by Jason Messer and Gene Smirnov right here.

From La Petite Fleur Weddings and Events… Ivy League graduates with a love of rowing and tea, Mary Pat and Karl wanted the history they had been making together to be reflected in their June 15th wedding at the historic Philadelphia Horticultural Center.

It was all about blending the couple’s history and interests with the beauty of their blush palette to create their big day look. To get started, La Petite Fleur pulled from its library of style— mixing and matching mercury and milk glassware filled with lush garden blooms, with the Wixted Family’s heirloom china, tea sets and books (many belonged to Mary Pat’s father in college)— to create a scheme with interest at every turn.

LPF also designed an installation that literally ‘framed’ the head table with hand-created paper poppies, accented with vintage tea plates and frames filled with flowers and fabric.

Mary Pat and Karl, both first year MBA candidates at Yale School of Management, reside in New Haven , CT.

Philadelphia Wedding from Love Me Do Photography

The vision behind this backyard soiree is simple. A casual, completely personal party that celebrates a love spanning across 10 years. And by bringing Truly You EventsPetals Lane and Eventions on board, the day turned into all that, plus more. Love Me Do Photography snapped up every swoon-worthy second, and it’s all sitting pretty right here.

From Chrissy at Truly You Events… Julia and Dan were absolute dreamboats when it came to planning their wedding. From our first meeting, and throughout the planning process, they were able to communicate and stay true to one clear vision for their big day: a laid back, beautifully detailed wedding in the backyard of Julia’s family ranch. Having dated for 10 years and attended many weddings together, Julia and Dan were strongly committed to creating something totally personal and unique for their special day. Instead of having a traditional bridal party and long straight aisle, Julia & Dan exchanged vows underneath of an apple tree surrounded by all of their siblings, nieces, nephews and parents. A few chairs were set for VIPs, and all other guests gathered round with drinks in hand. A close college friend officiated their self uniting ceremony and as Julia entered the backyard from a side gate, an acoustic version of “Julia” by the Beatles was played.

For the reception, Julia and Dan wanted to highlight the beauty of the ranch and its backyard as much as possible. The tents were erected two feet higher than usual so that guests could look out and enjoy the beauty of the gardens and pond as they entered the event from inside of the ranch. The escort cards were wrapped around another tree near the pond, and the dining table flowers were selected to compliment the blooms that grow naturally in the backyard. Even the rosemary sprig that put the finishing touch on each place setting was inspired by the rosemary bush grown on property by Julia’s step dad.

For dinner, guests enjoyed a family style meal underneath of a canopy of lights. In each of the two tents, Eventions strung up over 450 lights to create the canopy effect. Julia’s stepbrother actually raised the pigs that were brined all week and then slow cooked on site by the Garces chefs for dinner. Instead of the traditional wedding cake, Julia & Dan opted for seasonal pies and cakes presented in mason jars and french macaroons for each table. The wooden lifts on the dessert station, directional sign post and beautiful card catcher were hand crafted by Julia’s Dad who dabbles in woodworking. As their planner, I loved seeing the way their DIY pieces worked in perfect harmony with the professionally created design elements. One of my favorite moments happened when Julia’s step dad welcomed guests on behalf of the bride, the groom and both of their modern families. The whole crowd raised a glass and let out an audible cheer. The warmth and openness in that moment really encompassed what this wedding was about. Working with Julia & Dan and their loving modern families was truly something special.

Philadelphia Wedding from Wren & Field Photography

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a wedding that’s not afraid to color outside the lines. A wedding that bucks tradition and embraces personality and flair. Designed with one part spunk and one part sweet, this Philly affair is the prime example. Wren & Field Photography snapped up this modern-meets-whimsy-meets-gorgeousness “I do,” and there’s much, much more waiting right here.

Be sure to also take a peek at this fun little feature from Tree of Life Films!

Industrial

From Wren & Field Photography… Erin & Stephen were married on April 27th, 2013 at Front & Palmer in Philadelphia, PA.  They had a host of dedicated and creative vendors that helped make their wedding remarkable.  Falls Flowers filled the industrial space of Front & Palmer with beautiful spring and summer blooms.  Erin & Stephen were exuberant and overwhelmed with joy the entire day, at the end of the evening Stephen serenaded Erin with “I’ll make love to you” by Boyz D Ment.  For photos we traveled around center city first visiting the historic Rittenhouse Square, the site where Stephen proposed to Erin, and then the new Barnes Museum.  Stephen is an architect so we decided to have photos at the new museum and highlight the sleek modern architecture of the Barnes.

Philadelphia Wedding from Scott Hopkins Photography

This is about to get a little mushy, my loves. You see, there are those certain photographers who can capture the soul of a wedding, and Melissa + Scott of Scott Hopkins Photography are two of them. As you can see by their stunning images, they are able to capture the beauty and energy of a wedding like this (and by this, I mean gah-orgeous) and preserve them forever. Which is exactly why I love Scott Hopkins Photography, with all of my wedding obsessed heart.

From the photographer… Megan and Andy were married at the Valley Green Inn overlooking the Wissahickon Creek in Fairmount Park. Megan wore a stunning Junko Yoshioka gown paired with Sigerson Morrison heels. Scott had photographed Megan’s sisters wedding in 2007 and it was such a joy to see their family again.

Philadelphia Wedding from OneLove Photography

We all collectively love this couple here at SMP. In major part because their wedding captured by onelove photography is the perfect amount of city chic and a healthy dose of gorgeous fashion; but maybe even more so for their fun, silly moments caught on camera. These two are adorable. There’s no denying it. And you can see even more of their Philadelphia shindig right here in the full gallery.

From the Bride…We have both always been attracted to vintage old-world charm and as we started to plan the wedding, a 20s/30s old Philadelphia feel seemed to just fall into place. To set the tone, we created Western Union Telegrams as save the dates and vintage world maps as invitations. We wanted the evening to feel like a dinner party from the past with wonderful food, gorgeous gypsy jazz music, some great cocktails and an overall sense of elegance and ease.

We had stumbled upon a collection of antique dictionary pages with screen printed images of vintage cars, phonographs and typewriters. We loved the idea of each table having an image instead of a number and started from there. We then combed Los Angeles flea markets for vintage frames in which we placed black and white old family photos that were to be part of the centerpieces on each table. From the antique decanters and suitcases to the brass tea kettles and mercury glass, we spent countless hours selecting items that had both history and personal meaning to us as a couple.

The more personal you can make your wedding, with touches that reflect who you are as a couple, the more meaningful the experience will be for both you and your guests. From the food and wine selections, to the hand type-writer typed invitations and vintage family photos, we felt the whole experience from start to finish reflected our style and taste. Right after the ceremony as we were walking down the aisle of the recessional, we were whisked outside to a balcony that overlooked the city. Someone guarded the door and had set up champagne and a single cocktail table in the center of the patio. We had 10 minutes alone outside together…the first moments as husband and wife and simply held each other as we looked out at the skyline. Having that private time was incredibly special and allowed us to pause and take it all in.

From the photographer… Julie is loyal, thoughtful and unique; her favorite foods are cupcakes, cookies and chocolate and her hobbies include baseball and fashion. She lives by the words, “There’s no crying in baseball.” David is dedicated, funny and resourceful; he enjoys brewing his own beer and cooking. His motto is, “Last words are for fools who haven’t said enough.”

The two met in a Wharton college legal studies class where they ended up in the same debate group. Nothing like a little healthy banter to bring two people together! Their first date was an intense battle of rockband for Xbox at David’s house, after which Julie went out and bought her own Xbox…the battles continue to this day.

The idea for Julie and David’s wedding was “Timeless Elegance.” They danced to “More than Words” by Extreme because they thought it was funny; these two don’t take themselves too seriously and enjoy laughing together. After the wedding they jetted away to their honeymoon in Hawaii where I’m sure this laid back and fun couple had a blast with lots of laughs!
