InStyle Editor’s Philadelphia Wedding

InStyle is one of our favorite glossies here in SMP land, and when we got wind that their Senior Editor, Sharon Clott Kanter tied the knot, there was NO question it’d be fabulous. Held at Philly’s Down Town Club it’s all the elegance you’d expect of a ballroom wedding with modern, flirty touches woven in from start to finish. Cly By Chung snapped the photos, Atlantica Pictures crafted the film and there’s so many stylish moments to see right here.

From the Bride… Jared and I met when we both worked at New York magazine. He was an app developer, I was in the fashion department—we were from different sides of the office, but we met in the break room often. Soon we started dating, which led to awkward work run-ins, which led to an awkward break-up (outside our work building no less!). A few years later in spring 2012, after we had both left the company, we met up for drinks at the insistence of a mutual friend. We’ve been together ever since. Cheers to second chances.

These days, I’m the Senior Editor at InStyle magazine, where I cover events and parties for a living, among other things. The idea of planning my own event was incredibly daunting. Thankfully, through work, I had a lot of friends to offer advice through the process!

We chose to have the wedding in Old City, Philadelphia, as I grew up nearby in Havertown, Pennsylvania. The Down Town Club venue we picked was located on the eleventh floor of a Georgian Revival-style building originally built in 1921. It overlooked the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. After endlessly browsing StyleMePretty.com for décor ideas, I decided on the inspiration of pink roses and pink champagne—elegant and classy, yet totally fun and summery. The talented team at Minted helped me customize a suite of invites, programs, and stickers for favor bags, and I used the same floral Minted design to inspire the ombre white-to-pink cake created by the caterers at the venue. Then Brittany at Petals Lane dripped the black-and-white ballroom in hundreds of white, pink, and peach roses. It was absolutely stunning.

Picking out our looks for the day was one of my favorite wedding planning activities—no surprise given my day-to-day covering the fashion world. I chose an A-line gown by Pronovias, which featured a fully beaded corset. I’m only 5-feet-tall, so it took four fittings to the sizing it just right (petite sizing is different!). For the shoes, I turned to the fabulous squad at Jimmy Choo, who customized a pair of their signature Lance heels so the bottoms read “S♥J.” The finishing touch: Borrowed jewelry from Forevermark, one of my favorite diamond brands because they use all conflict-free stones. They lent me 5.2-carat diamond studs and a 7-carat tennis bracelet. Talk about a Cinderella moment! Not to be outdone, Jared was the perfect Prince Charming—he adorably wanted a James Bond-inspired look, so we scooped up a shawl collar tux from Hugo Boss and patent leather shoes from Salvatore Ferragamo. For the bowtie, we got Turnbull & Asser, the brand James Bond wore himself (in Daniel Craig era). He was thrilled.

Of course, all of the prep was worth it! Cly by Chung shot the most beautiful photographs, while Atlantica Pictures filmed all of the action. These two teams are incredibly smart, professional and talented. I am so happy I left our memories in their hands. I recommend them to everyone I know.

The reception was full of nonstop dancing thanks to the 10-piece band Rio. One of the biggest highlights of the night was when I invited my 93-year-old grandfather Poppy Hy to join me for a dance. I had coordinated with the band and my six bridesmaids that when the 1940s hit “In the Mood” came on, we would all dance with him. As the song played, each of my six bridesmaids asked to cut in, and my grandfather was so surprised and overwhelmed with joy every time a new girl tapped him on the shoulder. By the end of the song, we all joined together and danced around him in a circle while the entire room watched. It was quite the moment!

Gratitude doesn’t even begin to capture how we felt that day. It was truly like living in a fairytale. I’ll never forget how Jared squeezed my hand after we said our “I dos”—I knew our forever started right then.

Romantic Pennsylvania Wedding at Fairmount Park Horticulture Center

This wedding is gorgeous. Plain and simple. The florals from Love ‘n Fresh nearly knocked my socks off, and the images from Emily Wren are so beautiful I could cry. It’s romantic and elegant, yet comfy and intimate – leaving us with a wedding that is layered in love and so much pretty I can barely contain my excitement. See more of this beautiful day here.

From The Bride…Brendan and I met at a bar almost six years ago in New York City, where we currently live. I was basically a sucker once I heard that Irish accent. We got engaged in Kerry, Ireland, where Brendan is from, and began to plan our wedding in Philadelphia, where I grew up. From the beginning we fell in love with the Fairmount Park Horticulture Center and didn’t even look at any other venues. The greenhouse and reception room are lush and the space looks magical after sundown with all the fairy lights and candles.

I had tried on many dresses and initially thought I wanted something lace and fit and flare- very different from what I decided on in the end. When I put on the Watters dress it just felt so fresh and comfortable and perfect for the venue with its floral pattern. And it had pockets! The dream. I got ready at my childhood home in the suburbs and Brendan and his groomsmen prepped at the Sofitel Hotel in downtown Philadelphia.

Our amazing flowers were designed by Jennie Love at Love ‘n Fresh flowers. I love that she grows all her own local flowers on her farm and creates such unique and breathtaking pieces. I still dream about my bouquet with all its beautiful texture and wonderful scent.

We also loved working with Emily Wren who shot the most gorgeous photos and was so fun and fit in seamlessly with our friends and family. The forecast had been calling for rain all week and then the day turned out perfectly sunny and warm.

We were so lucky to have friends and family coming from all over the world to be with us. It was the best day filled with delicious food, great music and lots and lots of love!

Vintage Chic Philadelphia Fall Wedding

As an advocate for the use of more blues in weddings, I fell head over heels for this cerulean celebration. With various shades of my favorite color used throughout, from the gorgeous florals by Papertini to the super chic bridesmaids’ dresses, this wedding had me taking notes. Grace Winter of Asya Photography captured it all and this gallery has officially made my do not miss list.

From The Bride… Stemming from our simplistic styles and the fact that we are both lovers of all things blue, our wedding concept became a reflection of us. Dubbed “Vintage Glamour,” our wedding day could be described as clean and classic, but with thoughtful details and pops of sparkle. It was important that we stay grounded and true to ourselves, all while remaining respectful of the notion that this day was as much about our family and friends as it was about us.

Although blue is our favorite color, it was not purposeful that our entire wedding party wore navy – we actually worried there wasn’t enough variety and I didn’t want to stand out any more than I already would on my wedding day. What bride doesn’t like being the center of attention? That would be me. The sea of deep navy was rather an afterthought when we decided Patrick looked much better in a navy suit rather than the original charcoal one we had envisioned and the bridesmaids’ dresses were already purchased. Things will happen the way they are supposed to happen, we told ourselves, and it rang true. We couldn’t have been happier about the outcome as the classic dark look allowed for the other subtle details pop in a way they wouldn’t have otherwise.

Being outdoors without the fear of bad weather was an important factor that led to our decision to hold the reception in Kimmel Center’s Hamilton Garden. The beautiful atrium rooftop offered the added benefit city views and overlooks the entire Kimmel Center complex.

The look of the reception room was a beautiful blend of vintage and modern. The antique farm tables, mason jars, and linen runners were the perfect amount of contrast in the contemporary space. The “key to your seat” escort cards inspired our table names. Each table was named after a place that is special to us and explained why it was special. Tying in the purpose of keys unlocking these places, giving our guests a peek into our love story.

Overall, the entire day was very “us” and reflected our everyday lifestyles in way that we felt at home (which also happened to be our first dance song) during one of the most monumental celebrations of our lives.

Industrial Chic Philadelphia Wedding

All that glitters is gold certainly rings true for this gorgeous Front And Palmer affair captured by M2 Photo. From the ‘maids golden Lovely Bridal Shop gowns to the vivacious blooms by Belovely, every detail had the Midas touch. After scrolling through the gallery it’s evident that industrial chic has a new standard and the film from Lovesick, Inc below is all the proof I need.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/100355861 600 338]

From The Bride…We had a little over a year to plan our wedding, but like most girls, I had envisioned our wedding long before the engagement. When it came time to make decisions, we both decided we wanted our wedding to reflect us as a couple and as individuals. We wanted the venue and items that filled it to mirror our home because we wanted to feel comfortable. For that reason we decided that Front and Palmer was the perfect choice for us. Front and Palmer is a romantic and industrial chic setting.

We chose neutrals as our color palate; ivory, white, with gold accents and touches of pink. All that glitters is gold!

Just like our home, we wanted our venue to feel collected. The year leading up to our wedding, we spent several Saturdays at flea markets searching for items to fill the space. We collected over a hundred vintage brass candlesticks to use as centerpieces, we scoured through old frames to hang at our wedding and picked items that had a history to decorate the space.

When we finally saw the room and our vision come to life, I was completely taken back. It exceeded my wildest dreams. It was perfectly us, in every single detail. In that moment, sitting in the room taking in the decor, I knew we picked the perfect venue, and had the most amazing vendors. It all came together perfectly. Pure magic, just like our first dance song!

My bridesmaids wore full length gold dresses. The men wore navy suits with navy blue ties with white polka dots. Their pocket squares were floral pattern and their boutonnieres were white floral pins.

Romantic Blush Philadelphia Wedding

When it comes to a classic romantic pairing of style and color, ballrooms and blush win our hearts over every time. Case in point? This darling day snapped up by Paul Francis Photography. And when said wedding is chock-full of sweet blooms from Papertini, you can bet we’ll sneaking an extra peek or two at the gallery. See it all here.

From the beautiful Bride…When Bob and I first met, I was new to the Philadelphia area so a lot of our time together was spent with him showing me around all of his most favorite spots in the city. So when it came time to choosing a venue for our wedding, we knew we wanted to be in the heart of the city where we fell in love. Finley Catering’s Ballroom at the Ben was exactly what we were looking for. The high ceilings and warm glow of the uplighting give way to the mezzanine to create such a classic, romantic atmosphere.

The inspiration for the details of our wedding really came from the city. There is a famous park in Center City with a large LOVE statue, which became our theme, appearing on our invitations, cake topper, and ice sculpture. We also used the city skyline on our RSVP card and place cards. The place cards I was able to create myself using a template and paper from Paper Source in Marlton, NJ, but the invitation suite I needed help with. I met with a designer at Paper on Pine in Philadelphia and she was able to create exactly what I had envisioned.

In continuing with our theme of classic, romantic Philadelphia, we asked Paul and Carolyn of Paul Francis Photography to do our first look, couple’s portraits, and bridal party pictures by City Hall and in Old City. It was the perfect balance of beautiful architecture and lush summer greens. On the trolley between locations, Paul reached over to show me a few shots he had taken and I was blown away. I am so happy we trusted him to capture our day. His eye for detail and lighting is unbelievable.

Perhaps one of the best decisions we made while planning our wedding was hiring Tanti at Papertini as our florist. From our very first meeting, she completely understood my vision for classic romanticism using blush pinks, greens, and gold. She sketched out some ideas as we were talking and her enthusiasm as she was drawing and talking was electric. I loved how she turned a simple place card table into a true work of art using small elements of things Bob and I love. What I treasured most about Tanti’s work was our ceremony arch. Upon leaving her office after our first meeting, she asked if there was anything else I could think of so I mentioned that before my grandfather’s passing he had owned a lighting store and lightbulbs always made me think of him. Tanti used inverted lightbulbs as small vessels for hanging flowers from the draped arch above our heads. I couldn’t thank her enough for incorporating them; it was such a beautiful way to have him with us that day.

Lastly, my advice for brides to be, especially those who are feeling overwhelmed like I was in the beginning: hire vendors who are professional, organized, and see your vision. I cannot stress that enough. Everyone was asking how I was able to stay so calm the month of our wedding, and it was because I chose my vendors carefully. I knew that Finley Catering was the utmost professional in the business, and that Paul Francis Photography and Papertini were organized and understood my vision. The only thing you have to do is trust them to see it to fruition. Bob and I both agree if we could do it over, we would not change a single thing.

Elegant Philadelphia Greenhouse Wedding

I can’t think of any better way to beat the seasonal blues than a greenhouse wedding in the middle of winter. It’s exactly the route these two Philadelphia lovies went and I, for one, am a major fan. Of course, they couldn’t have pulled it off without Stephen STARR Events by their side, and Love By Serena captured every last bit. Cozy up with your cup o’ joe and head to the full gallery right here.

From Love By SerenaWhen I received Rhae’s e-mail about documenting their big day, I was over the moon with excitement. I first met her through past wedding clients of mine (Sylvie & Charlie), as she was the maid of honor in their wedding. Sylvie was her matron of honor and Charlie officiated their ceremony, so it was awesome to see some familiar faces.

Rhae and Nick are both doctors residing in Philadelphia, PA. Being the fun, laid-back couple that they are, they wanted to reflect that in their wedding. The two of them wanted to have some gorgeous, natural light for their winter wedding – yet wanted to keep warm. That said, The Horticulture Center at Fairmount Park (a beautiful greenhouse) was the perfect spot for their ceremony and reception!

They got ready at the elegant Hyatt at the Bellevue in Philadelphia. The two of them saw each other for the first time on the 19th floor of the hotel (XIX restaurant), with a lovely view of the city. Rhae wore an absolutely stunning Jenny Packham dress.

Philadelphia Wedding full of Colorful Florals

The colorful arrangements in this Philly wedding are beyond beautiful. Pure Design gives us peonies + garden roses all perfectly placed in shades of peaches + pink for the prettiest bouquets. And the sweet couple only adds to the cute captures by Emily Wren. Skip on over to the gallery to get a glimpse of the gorgeous.

Molly & Craig were married on 4/26/14 at the Power Plant Productions Studio in Old City Philadelphia. Before the ceremony we took pictures in Rittenhouse Square Park in Downtown Philadelphia. Molly grew up in Rittenhouse and the park held a lot of meaning to her and her family. After a few minutes there was a quick rain shower and we took shelter in a near by restaurant, Philadelphia’s Parc. Where we got some stunning vintage shots before heading over to the Power Plant studios for some more pictures and the wedding ceremony. Molly is very close with her family and the whole day was overflowing with love. I felt like as a photographer I could see the love everywhere and I think it comes through in these images.

Modern Nautical Philadelphia Wedding

As a proud New Englander, stripes and the seaside are two of my favorite things. So when this modern approach to nautical-style nuptials hit my inbox…let’s just say I was one happy blogger. It’s filled to the gills with navy accents +  Belovely’s all-white florals, and miss Emily Wren snapped every darling moment. More right here!

From the Bride… While on a vacation in Maine with long-term girlfriend Laura, Daniel proposed at the top of Pemaquid Lighthouse which would then shape the nautical theme of their wedding. Tying the “nautical knot,” the couple was married on the dock of a boathouse in Philadelphia’s historic boathouse row while guests watched from the balcony, forming a very intimate setting. Daniel and Laura also incorporated traditional wedding elements from his Jewish and her Thai heritage. With her experience working for a textile design company, Laura’s acute sense of style and eye for finishing details were seamlessly incorporated throughout the entire event.

Arboretum Spring Wedding in Philadelphia

Pink is sort of the unofficial favorite color at SMP and we will never, ever tire of it, especially when it’s done is such a soft and beautiful way. Brooke Courtney Photography captured a wedding fit for the utterly romantic at heart, and it’s everything dreams are made of, right down to the little guy in black tie.

From the Bride… From torrential thunder storms to getting in a car accident, the week leading up to our wedding was anything but perfect. Our wedding on May 2, 2014, however, far exceeded our expectations and was truly as wonderful as we had always imagined.

My husband Bryan and I were married outdoors in the gardens at the Morris Arboretum in Chestnut Hill (Philadelphia) surrounded by 70 of our closest family and friends. I wore a lace and tulle Pronovias gown that I purchased in NYC and Bryan wore a Vera Wang tuxedo. Taking the train 2 hours to NYC many times for my fittings was definitely worth it.

Bryan and I were very hands-on with the planning of our big day. We worked closely with our officiant to ensure our ceremony was exactly how we wanted it. We picked all of our blessings and wrote our own vows.

Our cocktail hour was in the Out on a Limb (tree house) at Morris Arboretum. When we first visited the arboretum, the tree house immediately stood out to us. We knew right away that we wanted a unique cocktail hour space and this was it! Jeffrey Miller Catering did a wonderful job with the passed and stationary hors d’oeuvres. Our signature drink was a champagne and St. Germain cocktail with a raspberry on top. It was delicious!

The reception space was inside the tent off the arboretum’s visitors center and was absolutely gorgeous. We kept the sides of the tent up the entire night so our guests could see the beautiful gardens around us. Bryan and I danced to Lady Antebellum’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, ate swordfish and mashed sweet potatoes, and enjoyed spending time with our friends and family.

The night was truly magical.

Whimsical Greenhouse Wedding

Once upon a time, there lived a bride with a love of Shakespeare and a dream for a wedding full of romance and whimsy. With her sights set on the Philadelphia Horticulture Center as the venue, for its overwhelming greens and playful atmosphere, she planned and prepped all the pretty details. More beautiful than she ever imagined, BG Productions Photography captured each magical moment… and they lived happily ever after in the gallery right here.

From The Bride…Josh and I are both professors in Montreal, he studies film and I study poetry and literature. As a young professor of literature, I have always loved Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I reveled in the forest imagery, the mythical creatures, Titania, the queen of the fairies, and the general sense of whimsy and playfulness in the language and scenery. When I got engaged, I knew I didn’t want to have a wedding in a hotel or associated with anything corporate, but rather, we wanted to capture that atmospheric magic and forest playfulness. We chose the greenhouse at the Horticulture Center because it was breathtaking, it overwhelmed the senses with its aromas and intense array of greens, and teh white industrial ironwork of the greenhouse looked spectacular. Our colors were mint green, coral, and yellow. We did a lot of the design details ourselves including making the menus, creating the wedding ceremony programs with poetry by ee cummings, WB Yeats, Kahlil Gibran, 150 handmade origami boxes with chocolates in them, stuffed burlap bags with Caladium bulbs paired with wildflower seeds, etc. I asked my bridesmaids too buy the vera lace yellow dress from Anthropologie, it was under $100 and I knew they could use it again. I also asked them to buy any pair of mint green heels and whatever jewelery I wanted. I bought a pair of Ivanka Trump mint green heels myself with Kate Spade mint green earrings. To continue with the woodland fairy theme, I wore a baby’s breath wreath and our flowers were mostly wildflower filler (solidago, thistle, etc). The greenhouse was so lush that we only needed floral accents. The centerpieces were either mason jars with flowers, a lantern, and candles OR a large center wreath with flowers spilling over the edge and three candles. The men wore gray suits, brown shoes, black suspenders, and yellow gold bowties.

Josh and I wrote our own vows, we had a friend marry us, and we had other friends read poetry during the ceremony. We talk about our partnership, our love for travel and adventure, but mostly our deep connection to each other.

Chic Center City Wedding with Pops of Purple

A chic city wedding is surely something we celebrate, and this Philly affair is no exception. Papertini’s beautiful bouquets of deep purple calla lilies totally pop against the historic backdrop, as MK Photo captured the newlyweds among their beloved city’s many landmarks. See the pretty details for yourself in the gallery here.

From MkPhotoChelsea and Stephan wanted their day to represent them as a couple, so making the decisions that were most important to them came easily – mainly, the decision to celebrate their family and friends.

The couple chose Philadelphia for their wedding location, as it had become their home. The wide geographic spread of family and friends also made it as central of a location as any. Chelsea and Stephan shared many of their Philly favorites through restaurant recommendations on their wedding website and welcome bags for guests with the best of Philly’s snacks (TastyKakes were a huge hit!). The chosen venue was Le Meridien Hotel. It was selected for many reasons: classic beauty, central location, and great food and drink options. Great food = happy guests!

Chelsea and Stephan wanted their wedding to be romantic yet chic, with personalized touches to symbolize them and their relationship. The wedding planner, Chrissy Lehman of Truly You Events, turned their ideas and tastes into beautiful decor and ambiance.

The day was absolutely perfect. The guests had a blast, continuing the after party in the hotel lobby until past three in the morning! There were many favorite memories from the day.

“Reflecting on our magical wedding day, we would not have changed a thing. The team of professionals who ensured everything ran smoothly allowed us to relax and enjoy every moment of the day. One regret–we cannot do this every year!”

eat.sleep.wear’s Philadelphia Engagement Session

You know her as the voice behind eat.sleep.wear, but today Kimberly is gracing the pages of SMP as a glowing bride-to-be. Along with her handsome beau, she hit the streets of Philly for an engagement sesh with Alison Conklin, and the result is a pretty + playful nod to their upcoming destination nuptials. Let the wedding planning begin!

From Alison Conklin Photography… These are engagement photos of Kimberly and Blake. Kimberly is the force behind the very popular blog Eat Sleep Wear. Her and Blake live in LA, California but are from the Philadelphia area. For their engagement session we ran around the streets of Philly hitting some of their favorite spots. They held pineapples in their photos because they are getting married in Hawaii in May of 2015.

From the Bride-to-be… Philadelphia will always be a city near and dear to my heart. And the funny thing is that I would have never guessed how I would meet my fiancé. A born and raised Philly girl, I spent about 12 years living in the city and working multiple graphic design jobs before starting my fashion, beauty and lifestyle blog. It was a journey that took me to NYC to live my dreams in the fashion world. One of those jobs in Philadelphia was for an agency where I would meet a guy named Blake. We exchanged a few emails about 5 years ago and the only connection between us were our mutual best friends.

Fast forward to 2012 when our mutual best friends got married in Philadelphia. I was living in NYC, Blake was living in San Diego. On a day filled with such love and joy for beautiful friend, I found a connection with my long lost acquaintance from my Philly days. A few months after the wedding, I invited Blake on a whim to come spend New Years Eve with me in NYC. Not expecting him to say yes at all. “Sure! When should I fly out?”

After many flights shared between NYC and San Diego, I found myself moving across the country to be with this man I loved so much. 9 months later… we were engaged

Philadelphia means so much to us both. I knew I wanted to come back for our engagement session. I also knew that no one else but Alison Conklin would shoot those photos. Her eye for catching beautiful light, and laughter between two people is something that has resonated with me for quite some time. I quickly called Alison and begged her to be part of our wedding!

I wanted some special places to my time in Philadelphia to be incorporated into the shoot. We started in Old City which boasted old cobble stone streets, unique doorways, and old world charm. I spent so much time in the green parks when I lived in the city so we made a stop at Washington Square Park to sit on the benches. Our final stop was at some of my favorite tile mosaics in the city. Philly based artist Isaiah Zagar creates mosaic murals all over the city and it makes the streets truly sparkle. It was the perfect backdrop to get silly with a bunch of pineapples. Maybe my pineapple are hinting to the location of my wedding. Can you guess?!

We had the best day running through memories of our past, but also, creating new ones in the city we love so much.

Traditional Ballroom Wedding

Without fail, traditional weddings always leave me speechless.  Why?  Because they’re the sort of wedding that perfectly combines glamour + classic stylings and props it up against a majestic setting like the Hyatt at the Bellevue ballroom.  Add in a talented team of vendors that includes the always amazing La Petite Fleur and the talented Philip Gabriel Photography and, well… there are no words.  See it all right here.

From La Petite Fleur… There’s something to be said for sophistication… it doesn’t trend, nor does it have moments… it is timeless. That said, at a time when weddings are characteristically colorful (pink wedding gowns!) and teaming with trends (the DIY look) – classic styling, like true love, is to be celebrated as unique.

This fall, Courtney and Kevin celebrated their love in a uniquely traditional style – infusing personality through very specific choices, beginning with their palette. This classy couple chose to paint their fall wedding in a rich sherbet palette and to collaborate with La Petite Fleur to design the quintessential downtown ballroom wedding.

The Bellevue glistened with gold and crystal accents at every turn, tables were dressed in pintuck linens, and garden blooms abounded in stunning bouquets; majestic candelabra arrangements atop petal-filled pedestals and sweet swags adorning the “Mr. & Mrs.” seats.

Even the entryway vignette embodied the couple’s unique signature sophisticated style. Blossom to blossom, more than 400 palette-coordinating roses were layered beneath a translucent tabletop to fashion a full floral linen-scape, upon which a gorgeous gold manzanita branch and pomander arrangement stood to greet guests. Then there were the unconventional confections – mini cakes and petite cupcakes – in shades of sherbet that further sweetened the uniqueness of the newlywed’s sophisticated soiree.

Philadelphia Whiskey Tasting Bridal Shower at The Twisted Tail

It’s a festive day in the good ol’ U S of A, and this whisky tasting bridal shower shoot just seems to be a perfect fit to keep that celebration going. Shot by Jessica Hendrix with gorgeous florals and design from Papertini, this gallery is great way to toast to America today. Cheers!

From PapertiniThis shoot was a collaboration that arose during a conversation about providing urban foodie brides with inspiration for alternative, unique bridal shower ideas. We immediately glossed over the ideas of overdone themes (ahem, wine tastings), and thought it would be fun to do a whiskey tasting instead. After all, why should whiskey be reserved for men in sport coats with cigars? We wanted to show a group of sophisticated urban women enjoying the brown liquor with class in celebration of their dear friend’s upcoming nuptial.

We connected with The Twisted Tail, located in Old City, Philadelphia. This ultra hip restaurant and bourbon bar has a healthy pork obsession which is reflected in their name, menu, and decor. The two story space, outfitted with unique details such as music sheet wallpaper, barrel hightops, electric guitars on the walls, baby blue leather tufted chairs, and a shuffle board, was the perfect space for a hip unique soiree. The Twisted Tail provided the amazing spread of cheese and finger foods as well as the “whiskey flight tree” where the girls were able to sample different varieties of whiskey. The whiskey tasting score card and beautiful bridal shower invitation was created by Paper Rock Scissors. They also created a keepsake box for the bride which had the bride and groom’s initial wood burned on the top with a copy of the invitation and small whiskey bottle inside to commemorate the theme of the event.

We meticulously brought together all the elements for the favor table, soda table, and main table. The food on the main table were set upon wood slabs and a table runner made from gold doilies. Rather than overwhelming the table with tons of flowers, we went with foliage varieties to let the food and whiskey take center stage. The soda table had strawberry and cream flavors, provided by Foam Floaterie, which we displayed in small glass bottles and labeled with sticker chalkboard labels. For the favor table, we displayed mini whiskey bottles and macaroons to be taken by the guests in kraft milk carton boxes. To reiterate the whiskey theme, we used empty whiskey bottles as candle holders. We took much care in the details such as the whiskey score card board (which we custom made!), scorecard box, signage on the soda and favor table (also custom made in-house), and the “date night book.” Instead of a traditional guest book, we custom created this date night book where guests write their date night recommendations for the couple based on the page theme. We kept the overall color scheme simple with punches of black and gold for the urban sophisticated feel.

Modern-Organic Inspiration Shoot

I like to think we’ve seen all the best moments in wedding design, but once this shoot from Sebesta Design hit our desks all bets were off. From the industrial setting to the mixed textures, geometric accents…and that vine-covered wire installation? Pure genius. SMPers, if the gallery from Redfield Photography is any indication of what’s to come in wedding trends, things are about to get good.

From Sebesta DesignAs an event designer and florist, I am always scouring the internet for the latest and greatest in design. I realized in my exploration, there were plenty of examples of modern design and plenty of examples of organic design, but few examples of modern and organic design. I wanted to show that modern and organic don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Textures can mix in a way that can be dramatic, romantic and modern.

I am personally drawn to clean, modern aesthetics, but as an event florist I love flowers and how they can bring life to any setting. While at the New York Gift Show I saw these amazing square wire forms that were linked together and used as light display shelving. They are amazing on the wall, but I knew they would be even better suspended over a table and the concept was born.

After describing the design concept and the necessary structural details I needed to pull off the design, I let the photographer, Redfield Photography, find the venue since they know what would work in terms of light and what would photograph the best. Marisa found Maggpie Vintage Rentals and it couldn’t have been a better fit for this inspiration shoot. An old warehouse, filled with fantastic light, hidden hideaways and gorgeous vignettes filled with their inventory it gave us every opportunity to showcase the theme.

Once we chose the venue, I needed to choose a fresh, bold, but still romantic color palette to bring out the details. Soft colors weren’t going to stand out in the vastness of the industrial setting so I chose muted plums, oxblood and antique gold with a light accent of ivory to soften everything.

The reception design focused around the wire structure, which was suspended from the ceiling and embellished with vine. Clusters of flowers were nestled in between the forms to make it look as though they were floating as well. The lower tablescape needed to coordinate with the three dimensional quality of the wire forms so I used a variety of square and rectangular glass vases embellished with gold washi tape that ran down the entire length of the table. I wanted the guests’ eyes to follow the lines up and down the entire design. And the flowers, needed to be both clean, but also textural in order to bring it back to the organic side.

As the idea grew into a full wedding concept I was looking to mirror the geometric accents from the reception in the ceremony setup. I used these amazing pentagon wall pockets that allowed me to bring not only the geometric dimension into play, but also allow me to design my flowers in them as well. And the look was completed with various types of vine “growing” up and around our amazing couple.

Modern Philadelphia Wedding Film

From innocent grade school flirtation to traveling the world together on a study aboard program, these two have won my heart. It only takes mere seconds into CinemaCake‘s darling film to see why. And after reading the Bride’s story, complete captivation sets in. Press play to see the entire thing!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/70960175 600 338]

From the beautiful Bride… Pat & I had been dating for 11 years – nearly half of our lives – when he proposed to me in the Rose Garden of the White House. When he asked if I would be his girlfriend outside the Ancillae Assumpta Academy library nearly a decade earlier, I replied, “Sure.” Our grade school romance consisted largely of blushing cheeks, slow dances at school formals, chocolates on Valentine’s Day, and a perceived mutual acknowledgement of “I like you, you like me.” Very little conversation. We were both exceedingly shy. Our primary means of communication was actually through letters. The Valentine’s Day card that accompanied the chocolates revealed a whole new person that I desperately wanted to get to know.

Miraculously, we carried the relationship through to high school, where it really grew. I discovered that the relationship I kind of happened upon had transformed into something much deeper; the boy that I had an innocent grade school crush on was the man I was falling in love with.

After much debate, with many family members weighing in on whether it was a good idea to go to the same college, we set off for the University of Miami together. And remarkably, in our junior year of college, we spent three months together circumnavigating the globe on a study abroad program called Semester at Sea. 13 different countries on four different continents – we saw the world together.

Ironically, it was after college that we learned to live apart. He got a job in Washington with the White House press office and me at an international bicycle company headquartered in Philadelphia – a constant Amtrak weekend ping-pong that we played for three years. Fortunately, Washington is only a train ride away, but the ups and downs of a long-distance relationship were difficult. We knew we wanted to get married. We had known it for a long, long time. It was mostly a matter of establishing some stability, getting our careers on track. But on that April day, as I walked to the White House for a “press office party,” I had absolutely no idea what was coming.

That morning after the proposal, exuding elation, Pat and I met our parents at their hotel. When we arrived, my mom was seated at a table with wedding magazines sprawled out around her. She looked up from her iPad and asked, “So what do you think about…” And that marked the official beginning of wedding planning – an incessant stream of questions that came with difficult answers and challenging decisions. The 4-hour flower appointments, the tablecloth debates, the impossible narrowing down of the guest list, the bridesmaid dress quest. Wedding planning wasn’t quite as fun as I had hoped.

But it was all utterly worth it. You know when you look forward to something so much, for so long that it inevitably doesn’t live up to your lofty expectations? That was the fear that crept into my mind in the final stretch before July 20th. But I’m supremely happy to say that my wedding – an event I had been planning for a year and a half and dreaming of for the last decade – was more than I could have ever hoped for. Truly. And I wish that line didn’t sound so cliché. When I really take the time to reflect on the day, I become unrelentingly emotional because I loved our wedding day with all my being and want to do it all over again.

My #1 objective for our wedding was that it would be a reflection of me and Pat. I wanted our guests to know what they were celebrating. While nearly impossible to pick a favorite part of our wedding day, I think I’d be safe in saying it was the ceremony. Officiated by my best friend’s father who had watched Pat and I grow up, he read and improvised magnificently from the script so to speak that I had spent so very long working on. I very purposefully selected specific readings that I thought spoke to us best. I catered the response to the readings to address us and our guests. Before the lighting of the unity candle, I wrote of our families’ heritage and history. Pat’s cousins and groomsmen sang – a surprise we left out of the program. When I told people we were writing our own vows, they’d look at me like I had three heads. And our vows were by far the best part of the ceremony. All in all, it was meaningful, intimate, personal, romantic.

We were originally supposed to be married in the Four Seasons’ outdoor courtyard. That’s what made me fall in love with the venue. I was totally enchanted by it. And when I was told the day before the wedding that we couldn’t hold the ceremony outside in light of the forecast, I was somewhat devastated. Though I have to say, the graceful draping, the flickering candlelight, the rose petals scattered along the aisle, the exquisite pattered lighting – it was majestic and all the more intimate. I’ll never forget the feeling of walking into that room, radiating joy, glowing in elation. And to see the tears streaming down Pat’s face. It seems like such a strange thing to say – but it made me so extraordinarily happy. I had hoped there would be something, but never imagined the kind of raw emotion I saw as I made my way to him – so moved I was the reason for it.

There were so many facets of the day that I devoted enormous amounts of time to planning, but the flowers perhaps encompassed the largest chunks of my time; and I simply can’t find the right adjectives to effectively articulate how stunning they were. The centerpieces were spectacular. The escort card tree was striking. The orchid placed in each napkin was delicately gorgeous. My bouquet, which we had tried so many variations of, was perfection. The orchids flowing over the waterwalls were striking. It was as if we brought a garden indoors, which was frankly what I was hoping for. To bring the natural beauty of outside into the elegance of inside. Rhoads Garden, our florist, outdid themselves – surpassed all my expectations.

I always wear and tend to gravitate toward bright colors. I think it’s why I hate the cold, gray winter and savor the vibrant, warm summer. So I knew when picking our colors that pastels just didn’t seem fitting. However, I didn’t want the colors to be overpowering and blinding. So we added the softness of the draping and some ivory and pale pink to the arrangements, along with silver-lavender tablecloths and transparent Lucite chairs (something my Mom insisted on that I wasn’t so sure about yet looked outstanding that day). But it was the pop of deep pinks and purples that I loved and seemed so fitting for summer and the fun and joy of the day.

I tried as hard as possible that night to savor each and every moment and sort of take mental snapshots. While getting ready, I looked around at all of my bridesmaids milling around laughing, smiling, looking stunning. Click. Tiffany Stout (makeup) and Alexey Kats from Architeqt Salon (hair) did a beyond phenomenal job. They made me and my bridesmaids look and feel magnificent. I especially loved my side-swept curls that I think perfectly complimented my Enzoani lace gown. Just after meeting Pat at the top of the aisle, I remember trying to soak in the room, the flowers, the bridal party, the music, and I tried to squeeze in a quick glance at all of our guests. Click. During the reception, I paused and watched all of my flip-flop-clad family members and friends on the mobbed dance floor swaying, jumping, grooving to our fabulous band the LA Starz, who had our beaming guests dancing from the minute the doors opened to the end of the reception (in my opinion, the ultimate indication of a great party). Click. Just before entering the after party next door, I snuck into the ballroom once more to get a final look at the breathtaking room. Click. And during the last song of the night, I took a moment to fully take in my husband and the overwhelming happiness I was feeling at that moment. Click.

I wish I could relive my wedding day over and over again. The good news: We invested a whole lot of time into finding the right people to help us remember the most important day of our lives, with CinemaCake being possibly the best wedding decision I made. They captured the emotions, sights, and sounds (the latter, perhaps the most important and defining) of our wedding in a way that I think so few mediums and people are capable of and in a way that so perfectly and vividly encapsulates the day with depth and vibrancy. We now really do get to relive our wedding day for which I am so thankful.

Winter to Spring Wedding Inspiration

Behind every fabulous inspiration session is a wonderful team of vendors and a crazy gorgeous theme. And this piece of wedding bliss has those two ingredients in spades.  It’s a winter turns to spring masterpiece with yummy treats from Cake Stand Bakery, fab paper goods from Liz Kelly Designs and all kinds of pretty from A Garden Party.  See every moment captured by Rachel Pearlman in the full gallery.

From A Garden Party… This shoot that captures a transitional winter to spring wedding. Our ultimate goal when coordinating this shoot was to create something that was vibrant, fresh and colorful, while still paying homage to the romanticism of a winter wedding. We used transitional florals, floral bulbs, elements of ice and sugar crystal, and shades of blue and green to create a wintery spring wonderland. Pops of burgundy, magenta and yellow hinted at the warm weather to come. We wanted the shoot to express the excitement of the first beginnings of spring, when flowers emerge from the frozen ground and greenery begins to replace what has died in winter.

The venue was a private residence, and had a rustic, traditional feel already that helped us style the decor. The bride (Miss PA 2011) wore a blue Ombre gown from Theia. Our bridesmaid wore a Caroline Deane green and lace gown. Each lady wore floral crowns comprised of garden roses, muscari, tweedia, jasmine vine, thistle, and begonia foliage. No detail was spared in creating the ceremony and reception decor; an ice blue linen was the perfect backdrop for rustic logs with spring flowers spilling out of them. Clay flower pots were decoupaged with floral printed fabric and held spring flowering bulbs. Hints of bulbs, just beginning to burst with growth were seen in the centerpieces, bouquets, and on the dessert table. Sugared pears served as a pretty little favor and the perfect vessel to pin place cards too. An ice bucket with fresh florals frozen inside made a stunning statement next to delicate glasses with floral ice cubes. Even the chandelier was adorned with hanging smilax vine. The bridal bouquet featured a primrose as the focal point and begonia leaves accented the bridesmaid bouquet. Hand painted cakes in green and blue and paper goods in washed blues tied together the themes of winter and spring.

The season in between winter and spring can be just as beautiful for a wedding as summer or fall- and this styled shoot is proof of that! This dream team of Rachel Pearlman Photography, A Garden Party Florist, Your Day Your Way ” Traveling Hair and Makeup Artistry”, Cake Stand Bakery and Liz Kelly Designs came together to bring a romantic, fresh and colorful take on the transitional wedding! From a stunning blue ombre gown by THEIA worn by our bride, to a 1920s inspired bridesmaid gown by Catherine Deane and sweet floral headpieces, this wedding inspiration is sure to make you reconsider getting married in ideal temperatures.

Glamorous New Year’s Eve Wedding in Philly

What better way to ring in the New Year than with wedding in Old City? This couple chose (in great taste, we think) to host their party in the posh Hotel Monaco surrounded by metallic accents and cuddled in lavish furs for an event that looks as fun as the bride’s reception dress. Keep scrolling for some beautiful images by Asya Photography. Feeling the love? Then make sure you check out the full gallery here.

From the Bride… Chris and I met at the University of Delaware senior year, even though we were from the same town! He went to Radnor and I went to the Academy of Notre Dame. I was instantly attracted to his charm and ability to make me laugh (he is pretty easy on the eyes too! :) ). We both found our way back home after college where we casually dated on and off until we took ourselves a bit more seriously around the age of 25. I moved in with him and his fuzzy/snuggly golden retriever into their charming condo in Conshohocken where we have spent the last four years together.

Chris totally surprised me with the proposal. I was off on a work trip to Chicago, I am the accessories buyer for BHLDN (Anthropologie wedding) and I was in town with a jewelry designer who was throwing a trunk show as a holiday shopping event. What I didn’t know is that my best friends from the office in Philadelphia, as well as the store staff in Chicago, helped coordinate the surprise of my life! I went to the event and was preparing to meet some of the team for dinner afterwards at a cute little restaurant called GT Fish & Oyster a few blocks from my hotel. I checked in with the hostess, who led me to the table and Chris was sitting there all dressed up by himself with a huge grin on his face. I was extremely caught off guard…I usually know EVERYTHING (really, the girls in the office call me Nancy Drew) and wasn’t sure what was going on… A bit shocked you could say, so surprised! As I walked up to him, he got down on one knee and proposed to me. It was very emotional, yet we still managed to laugh the entire time as well. It will always been one of my favorite memories.

I feel lucky enough to work for such an amazing brand as BHLDN because it taught me that your wedding day should really be reflective of you and your fiancé and that it is a day you can make your own to celebrate and cherish forever. I always dreamed of getting married on New Year’s Eve… a winter wedding on a night fit for celebration. I knew the colors would always be black & white with pops of gold and silver, perfectly festive for the holiday… A bit of preppy and chic with a mix of stripes and chevrons, vintage ribbons I found along my travels, and playful tinsel straws and party horns. We loved planning our big day and all the details.. We had the best wedding planner to pull it all together (Sara from Confetti & Co) too! We chose Old City as our venue spot because Chris really loves the historical part of the city. We wanted an older, charming church with an intimate feel and decided on Old Saint Joe’s on Willings Alley. Our reception was at the Hotel Monaco, which was a great compromise for us.. A modern, boutique hotel (for me) in the heart of Old City right next to the Liberty Bell (for him)- wedding bells and liberty bells exactly! We wanted to have fun surprises for our guests: a balloon drop at midnight as well as we a room setup next to the reception that had a photo booth with a balloon backdrop and our version of a guest book- wedding mad libs (one of the funniest/best parts of our wedding).
