Traditional Beauty Meets Modern Sleek Style… And We Can’t Get Enough

Virginia continues to amaze and impress me when it comes to wedding inspiration and this shoot by Elisa Bricker is perfect proof. Mallory Joyce took the traditional beauty of this historic manor and infused it with modern and minimalist detailing creating a scene I’d be quite happy to live in. Plume Calligraphy set the stage and all that followed can be found in our Vault aka where I’ll be all day long. Join me there!

From Elisa Bricker… This shoot features floral and concept design and styling by Mallory Joyce, who blended this modern couple’s aesthetic with the bride’s historic family home. She chose linens, florals, and calligraphy to nod to the more traditional home, and more modern pieces in the silverware, and glassware on the tables.

When a Fur Baby in a Bow Tie Crashes His Humans’ Engagement Sesh

There is nothing, and I do mean NOTHING cuter than a fur baby in a bow tie. *Enter* Reece the Labradoodle who crashed his humans’ engagement session and loved every second of it. Elizabeth Fogarty captured the fun and we can’t get enough!

From Elizabeth FogartyWinston and Taylor are just the sweetest couple ever, and so is their engagement session! Winston looked handsome in his navy suit and Taylor is simply gorgeous with her side braid. They brought key details like a romantic bouquet and her very own ring box from Tiffany. Taylor is truly living every girl’s dream. Winston is head over heals for her and asked her to marry him with her dream ring. The BEST part of this session really is Reece the labradoodle. He pretty much stole the show with his adorableness. He just had to be with his humans the whole time. And let’s talk about his bow tie! This engagement session is just perfect from beginning to end.

A Relaxed Beachside Wedding That’s Totally Elegant

Is there anything more captivating than a California wedding? The short answer is no, but the longer answer? Well it goes a little something like this celebration. With Wedding Kate on hand orchestrating elegance, this is one soiree that’s sure to stun. From the indoor reception to the sunkissed ceremony, Laurie Bailey Photography captured it all we’ve got it in The Vault!

From Wedding KateNot every couple is as natural as Madison and Patrick. As we sat at our menu tasting, it seemed as they didn’t have a care in the world. Food came out, they tried it, gave a whole hearted thumbs up and just went about being madly in love. And really, that’s what this thing called a wedding is all about.

Madison’s effortless style was the design focus of her wedding day. Nothing stuffy or overdone. Loose, beautiful flowers and subtle, soft colors truly set the backdrop for their love story. We used florals that spoke to the couple, enhancing the venue but also bringing forth an unexpected whimsy. The combination of greens and shades of white was executed perfectly by Camellia Floral Design. Madison chose a soft, natural arch for the alter, opposed to the overdone, heavily fabricated structure. When she saw it for the first time, I knew we nailed it. Branches and blooms formed a beautiful, organic shape that was hard to take your eyes from.

Madison wore a gorgeous, ethereal gown with tulle and lace detail that fit her personality perfectly. The trailing ribbons from her bouquet seemed to dance in the salt water breeze as she prepared to walk down the aisle. Patrick, quite the gentleman, wore a sharp suit, adorned with the sweetest matching boutonnière. They were the classic couple, exuding elegance, grace and above all, love!

The wedding day was one from the movies where truly nothing went awry. The guests just beamed with excitement for the couple, and hoards of friends from college and younger days cheered and hollered for the newlyweds. Through the night, Patrick kept beside his bride, whisking her around the dance floor in between menu courses and hugs and kisses with family and friends. At the very end, we escorted guests out to enjoy the warm Pacific air as we bid the couple farewell. Off they went from this thing, this wedding, hand in hand and even more madly in love.

They Tied The Knot the Same Place Where They Fell In Love

I have yet to meet a Judy Pak wedding I’m not instantly obsessed with. She’s got a way with the camera and when Judy captured these two loves’ special day on Shelter Island? It was sheer perfection. From the seaside ceremony to a classic Sperry Tents, it’s nautical gone chic and the film below by Meredith Heuer = icing on the cake.

From The Bride…Our wedding was held overlooking Coecles Harbor at the Ram’s Head Inn on Shelter Island. Having been raised on opposite coasts, it made sense for us to choose a location that held special meaning for both of us. Shelter Island captures deep sentimental values within our relationship; JP grew up vacationing there with his family and introduced it to me in the first few months of dating (it was on a dock overlooking Dering Harbor where we first said “I love you.”), and we got engaged at sunset on an antique yacht just a stone’s throw from my parents’ summer house, which they bought after spending two summers there with us.

We wanted our wedding to feel elegant, yet relaxed and fun, like Shelter Island itself. It was also really important to us to make it feel like a mini destination wedding for our guests and to give them a taste of Shelter all weekend. Guests were greeted with welcome bags with local treats – mini bottles of Wolffer Estate Rose Cider, North Fork Potato Chips, Tate’s Chocolate Chip Cookies – and a hand-drawn map of the island and weekend itinerary by our incredibly talented calligrapher and invitation designer, Karla Lim. Friday night, we held a rehearsal dinner at our favorite restaurant on the island, Vine Street Cafe, followed by welcome drinks for all of the guests at Sunset Beach. This was the perfect way to set the vibe for the weekend.

Given our love of cooking, planning began with the food. We were adamant that guests sample the produce, seafood, and in-season pies that the East End had to offer in mid-September. Local Catapano goat cheese and heirloom tomatoes, Montauk striped bass, Briermere Farm fruit pies, and a coconut cake from Sag Harbor Baking Co. were among some of the items served. At cocktail hour, we served our two favorite cocktails, an Aperol Spritz and Spiked Watermelon Agua Fresca, alongside rustic platters of cheese and charcuterie, crudites, and miniature lobster rolls, fish tacos, and pulled pork sliders.

The ceremony took place overlooking the water and cocktails followed from a higher vantage point. As guests were ushered into the tent for the reception, a light rain began to fall, which made for an even more intimate setting. Lilly-Anne Merat, a singer/songwriter who grew up in nearby Sag Harbor, and her two guitarists led the first dance with a beautiful rendition of “You Are The Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne. From there, our guests joined us and we danced to an acoustic mix of soul and Motown classics like Otis Redding and newer hits from Leon Bridges.

Annie Casale of Sag Harbor Florist created the most gorgeous florals throughout the inn and tent – loose, natural, garden picked arrangements in varying shades of white and green; the cutest, potted herbs on the cocktail tables; and garlands of silver dollar and seeded eucalyptus scattered with dahlias, ranunculus, garden roses, and white snowberries on archways, the tent entrance, and down the length of the dinner tables.

In the tent, it was very important to us to create an intimate space that felt like a dinner party at home. We used four long dinner tables spanning the length of the tent with La Tavola grey linen tablecloths and tons of candlelight. Sperry Tents sourced my favorite vine ball lights to hang over the dance floor – combined with the candles and strung bistro lights, it created the most beautiful ambient light and cast a magical glow on the sailcloth tent.

After dinner and dancing in the tent, we grabbed umbrellas and ran up the hill into the inn’s bar, where Abby and Tom, the husband and wife duo of Play Something Good, DJ’d the rest of the night – they absolutely killed it and we had the best dance party of our lives. The night ended at my parents’ house down the road with a pool party and late-night snacks.

We were so lucky to have Judy Pak capture it all in exactly the way we had envisioned. Her film photography is so natural and ethereal and she managed to get the perfect mix of posed and candid images. Meredith Heuer, an incredible photographer and videographer, created the sweetest, black and white wedding video that we still can’t stop watching. Carrie and Alex of Lyndsey Hamilton Events share our aesthetic and attention to detail and were the perfect partners to help us plan the most amazing day.

12 Adorable Finds for a Tropical-Inspired Nursery

We’ve seen just about every kind of nursery there is, from wallpapered pretties to mid-century modern to adventure-inspired. But the one ‘theme’ if you will, that I’d love to see and gets my ooh’s and ahh’s going is a tropical-inspired space. Maybe it’s this fun shower we shared a while back or cutie finds like this that prompted it, but you have to admit, a nursery filled with these tropical treasures would be so darling!

All the Inspiration You’ll Ever Need for Your Nature-Inspired Wedding

One thing we know for certain? Taking your design cues from the Japanese Friendship Garden in San Diego’s Balboa Park is never a bad idea.  And neither is stealing every.last.ounce of pretty from this gorgeous inspiration sesh from heidi-o-photo and Lauren Sharon Design & Rentals. It’s nature meets minimalism in the prettiest of settings. Fall in love with every stunning moment in THE VAULT.

From heidi-o-photo… Inspired by the gorgeous grounds of The Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA, this earthy, modern styled shoot looks to nature and the traditional elements of Japanese design to bring new dimension to a classic motif.

Shibui- Beauty by way of simplicity, Minimalism

Fukinsei- Asymmetrical Balance

Shizen- Naturalness, Organic Spontaneity

Lauren Kimmons, owner of Lauren Sharon Design & Rentals embraced equal parts quiet sophistication and a casual, organic warmth with her concept for the dining and lounge spaces. “Our backdrop was an award winning Japanese garden with cherry trees just coming into bloom- it was amazing. The concept was to create a space that embraced our surroundings and centered around the principles of Shibui, Fukinsei and Shizen- offering each guest their own personal experience of the garden.”

Together with Heidi Orcino of Heidi-O-Photo, they created a concept of balance: between contrasts, elements of design and periods of style. A mix of mid-century modern furniture and natural, almost wild, floral installations honors the minimalism of traditional Japanese design and its fondness for the natural- in the truest sense of the word.

Organic Elements built an amazing floral installation that brought the garden backdrop right to the table- using yellow acacia, jasmine vines and giant air plants (among other gorgeous greens) they created a mini garden that grew up from the table and down from the ceiling.

“With the help of Snake Oil Cocktail Company, we were able to create two custom craft cocktails. We wanted to see this concept through and only Snake Oil’s mindful approach to garden-fresh ingredients and innovative recipes would do,” said Lauren.

They created two cocktails for the shoot, the New Moon (Yamuzaki 12 Year Whiskey, Green Tea, Fresh Mint, Pressed Blood Orange and A Touch of Honey) and the Sun + Sky (Nigori sake, North Shore Aquavit, Pressed Lime, Elderflower and Sea Salt).

instructions

To make Royal Icing, wisk together 3 T meringue powder and 6 T water

Add 1 lb confectioners sugar mix on medium speed in stand mixer for 10 minutes.

Add water or confectioners sugar as needed to get the consistency you need. Our idea of perfect-for-sprinkles royal icing is a consistency that will slowly run off a spoon and fall in on itself in about 10 seconds. If you run a knife through it, the knife mark will be gone in about 10-15 seconds.

Divide into 2 batches. Add pink food coloring (or a couple of drops of red) in one batch and green in another.

Using your pink icing, pipe a half circle. Repeat as many times as you want watermelons. Outline the round portion of your half circle with the green icing, making sure the two colors are touching. Let dry for 24 hours.

Using your food writer, add small lines or dots to create the watermelon seeds.

Get Swept Away with This Rocky Mountain Elopement

Eden Willow Photography sure knows the quickest way to our hearts, because this mountain top elopement? Well, it’s kind of everything. Complete with watercolor calligraphy and an awesome sense of adventure, we invite you to peek the pretty in The Vault!

From Eden Willow PhotographyOne of the things that makes us so supremely happy to live in the Pacific Northwest is that there is such a spirit of adventure and exploration. We are often just an hour away from a mountain, a waterfall, or a desert and such backdrops can do little else but inspire us to wander and inspire us to create. Our inspiration for this shoot came from the very nature that so abundantly surrounds us. Our ultimate vision for this elopement inspiration shoot was not just to produce something aesthetically beautiful, but to really inspire our wanderlust brides and grooms-to-be to start their marriage off with an adventure and to never stop adventuring from day one to year 51 and beyond.

Maria of Fern + Grace did an incredible job capturing our heart and vision. We wanted to use the landscape as a literal foundation and build upon it in a way that didn’t detract from the beauty of the Columbia Gorge, but fit perfectly within it. What better way than to nestle a romantic tablescape and ceremony site right into the mountain? Maria hand dyed gorgeous cheesecloth to use as a light table runner that we knew would capture the wind and chose simple, but elegant place settings to match. She used an incredible custom vintage window set as our ceremony backdrop with added Edison lights.

The Columbia Gorge is known as a wind corridor. When we made our decision to shoot there, we knew immediately we needed a dress that could capture that movement. The Regan Gown from BHLDN (A Willowby by Watters exclusive gown) was a perfect choice with its lovely, light layers of tulle that danced easily in the wind.

Brier & Ivy did an amazing job with the florals for our shoot. We wanted to stick to a neutral palette that really spoke volumes about the abundance of flora and foliage in the Northwest. Amy picked dogwood blooms from her back yard and paired it with gorgeous white peonies and greens to create arrangements that were as organic and natural as possible. We topped the gorgeous watercolor accented cake from Dream Cakes with additional dogwood blooms, moss, and ferns.

We were instantly drawn to the beauty of The Northway Studio’s handmade bespoke jewelry. The delicate “Willow” necklace was an obvious choice, but we also fell in love with the gorgeous Moissanite ring and paired it with a simple, classic gold band for our groom.

The invitation suite by Elisa Anne Calligraphy features an absolutely breathtaking watercolor rendition of the Columbia Gorge and her impeccable calligraphy. She added beautiful vintage stamps to really complete the set.

We wanted to represent the simplistic beauty of the Columbia Gorge with simple, yet elegant hair and makeup. Bri Ellis from Portland Hair and Makeup did an outstanding job styling our bride with soft, windswept tresses and natural blush and eyeshadow colors.

All of the vendors we were fortunate to work with completely aligned with our heart and vision and refined it in so many ways. We are so thankful for their hard work and dedication!

Looking for the Ultimate Venue? How ‘Bout a Football Stadium.

You could say that this wedding lands in touchdown territory, of maybe even proclaim that it’s a ‘field of dreams’. Either way, no matter what you choose to title it, it’s plain and simple – these two planned the coolest wedding reception ever. Complete with newlywed portraits at their favorite professional football stadium, Karen Ann Photography captured the fun to share in The Vault!

From The Bride…Jay was taking care of one of my patients and naturally he made me blush (I mean he is so darn handsome!) when he asked about her condition. A week later I invited him over a Packers game. He texted me the next day asking if we were still on for the game, I had to come clean at this point! I actually didn’t have a tv equipped with anything but Netflix! He laughed and invited me to his place for the game. He was nervous and cute and charming and from that day I knew he was going to be the one.

On May 23, 2015 I was set to have a large party for my graduation from nursing school. The night before I had to work till 11pm and when I came home and pulled in the drive way he was on 1 knee with candles that said “will you marry me?”. It was romantic and perfect in every way! The next day was basically a graduation/engagement party. It was really a huge moment for us both, I was graduation from nursing school and he was graduating from his internal medicine program and we planned on moving to Green Bay from Milwaukee and the timing was perfect to start our forever life together.

We started our day meeting the guys at Jay’s parents house, then traveled to St. Mary’s Church in Luxemburg. I found the girls and Michelle started photographing the details. Kelli did an AHHH-MAAZZZINNNG job with her wedding details. Her dress was a two tone, a-line gown with a sweetheart lace bodice. The wedding bouquets were made by Buds & Bloom FULL of succulents, peonies, hydrangeas and roses. Jay’s grandmother gave Kelli a silk rose to use as her “something old”. Grandma carried this rose in her bouquet the day she married Jay’s grandfather in 1946. Each bridesmaid wore a different shade of pink, cream or purple dress. Everything coordinated perfectly!

After their full Catholic ceremony we traveled to Northbrook Country Club where we photographed the bridal party plus the first of the Newlywed portraits. After a few minutes we were off to the Green Bay Packers Stadium for the wedding reception. We had a pretty strict schedule of events for this wedding because of the travel time, so I made sure to keep us on schedule. After arriving to Lambeau Field our timeline slowed down and we added a few extra minutes to walk around on the field. Yes the field!…Which wasn’t in the original plan and maybe not even allowed but when the groomsmen walked up to me and said “Sooo…look to your right. See those stairs down to the field? Yeah…we’re going to walk really fast, walk down those stairs and do the Lambeau Leap…and GO!” Of course I followed and photographed the guys as each did the Lambeau Leap. Obviously! This was the best part of the wedding for Jay and his groomsmen. Even Kelli and the bridesmaids loved being at the stadium. This is also why I had Michelle assist at this wedding, when you travel to Wisconsin it’s usually a tradition to stop and take a photo outside the stadium. Well…Michelle had her photo taken on the field!

It was finally PARTY TIME!! Monzu Bakery made the cutest cake with a “Dr. & Mrs.” cake topper. Sash and Bow did an amazing job coordinating and decorating the Legends Club Room for the reception. PLUS again Buds & Bloom created the beautiful centerpieces. After dinner Shaun from The New Dance Machine played the perfect music for LOTS of dancing.

What was your color palette and your style vision?

The most important thing about this question is that I’m not the girl who has been dreaming of having a wedding for my whole life. I never thought about my wedding dress or had a Pinterest page full of wedding ideas. When we got engaged I quickly realized I could not do this alone and sought expert guidance. I meet with Sash and bow and buds and bloom and just told them I didn’t really have a vision or anything specific in mind. I like the succulents and I wanted something springy, soft and romantic. They basically had only that sentence to go off and I must say they nailed it!

What unique elements or DIY details did you include?

I ordered the Dr and Mrs cake topper off Etsy and spray painted it silver glitter, that is my favorited DIY detail I had. I’m so unbelievably proud of Jay for his dedication and hard work to become a doctor and thought it seems like a silly title being a physician is a huge part of Jay and our relationship as Im an emergency room RN.

What was your favorite moment? Your favorite crafted detail?

My favorited moment was walking down the aisle and staring at the man I love thinking this is exactly where we are supposed to be and this is exactly how it is supposed to be. My heart was literally pounding and I could have burst for the amount of love I felt for my husband in that moment. After the wedding we were talking about our favorite moments and Jay said this was also his favorite.

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc.

My flowers were the most beautiful bouquets I have ever seen! They were also heavy! The flowers pulled all the colors of the bridesmaid dresses together perfectly. I have to give credit to buds and bloom because they did a fantastic job with the tiny amount of guidance I gave them. The men’s boutonnières were also stunning, a simple succulent that added the finishing touch. I was fearful that Lambeau was going to be a hard place to make look soft and romantic but the large stunning centerpieces stole the show! The room was literally breathtaking with the details from the candelabras to the kissing menu. Like I said before since I have not been dreaming about my wedding since childhood I had no idea what kind of wedding dress I would like. I tried on 4 dress and as soon as I put it on I knew that it was the one. It was elegant and totally me. the color of the dress is what I loved the most, in some light it looked white but it was a very light pink; champagne. I wanted something I could dance in and feel comfortable in.

What is one piece of advice that you could give brides-to-be?

My advice for brides-to-be is to remember why you are having a wedding. Let the day be the day and roll with it. Remember why you are doing all this planning and budgeting and stressing out! Remember its to spend the rest of your life with the person you love. Stick in your means and enjoy it, enjoy the mistakes, enjoy the tears, enjoy the red wine stain down your dress and dance, dance, dance! We lived in the moment with and we had an absolute blast! Also splurge on a photographer! The photos are what we have to remember that day and I have some AMAZING photos! Karen did an amazing job keeping the timeline on schedule, her jokes made everyone laugh and happy. That totally helped Jay and I stay calm and relaxed on our wedding day because we knew she was going to make sure we were happy with everything and where we needed to be. She is much more then a photographer but also a coordinator. I am so happy we found Karen to photograph our wedding!

Unless you go the DIY route, there’s no doubt that throw pillows can cost a pretty penny. I think I spent nearly $400 bucks just sprinkling our couch with them when we moved into our first home. So my advice? If you’re planning to purchase, go for patterns and colors that can take you from one beautiful season to the next. Click to shop these all season pretties!

The Summer Heat Was No Match For This Blue + White Southern Wedding

Despite a heat index of 110, the only things melting were hearts at this Southern celebration. The Bride still beamed and her Groom had a smile on his face the whole entire time, thanks to the talented team of vendors that kept things cool and collected. Fox Events designed all the blue and blush beauty and Dana Cubbage documented it all – see every moment and every detail in our Vault!

From Dana Cubbage Weddings… The sweltering summer heat typically arrives here in Charleston in late June and man oh man, it is officially here! At the end of June, Alyson and Scott said “I do!” at The Island House, which is nestled on the Stono River just outside of Charleston, and the heat index reached 110 degrees on their big day! Regardless of the heat, everyone was determined to have a great time and I couldn’t have asked for a more cooperative group of people to work with as we photographed everything as quickly and efficiently as possible. It really made things go so much smoother and I can’t thank Alyson, Scott, their family and friends enough for being so fabulous on such a HOT day!!

The girls got ready downtown at Charleston Place Hotel and we did a few photos downtown before heading out to the venue on Johns Island where Alyson and Scott shared their First Look. Bridal party and family photos followed, with lots of breaks in between for some air conditioning and water! Lauren and her team at Fox Events were simply AMAZING throughout the day and the reception design was gorgeous, inspired by Alyson’s love of blue hydrangeas. The girls at Fox Events worked so hard all day long to keep those flowers looking fresh in the heat… and it really paid off! Alyson and Scott said their vows in front of a beautiful floral arch overlooking the river, then spent the evening celebrating with all of their closest family and friends. It was an amazing celebration and I’m honored to have been there to document it all.

Ditch the Shoes, Don the Flower Crown and Bid Summer a Proper Adieu

We love Summer so much so, that we wouldn’t dream of closing out the season without a proper farewell; especially if there are flower crowns involved. Jacquelyn of Lark & Linen + Gaby of The Vault Files are showing us how to pull off the prettiest boho inspired party where shoes are a no-go but yummy cocktails and all your gal pals are a must. See even more captured by Heidi Lau right here.

There’s just something about the warmth that summer brings that begs for long and leisurely meals with your favorite girlfriends in hand. With the weather on a steady increase, and the fleeting summer months on the horizon, my sweet friend Gaby of the Vault Files and I wanted to take the opportunity to bring together a few of our most inspiring lady-friends to indulge in a boho inspired summer soirée…

We fully took advantage of the warm lakeside breezes, and felt the sand between our toes for as long as physically possible. We nibbled on a summer-inspired citrus salad, rosemary flatbread, caprese skewers, and a bountiful, overflowing, cheese and charcuterie plate. The day was absolutely magical in its own wonderful way, and I’m simply dying to recreate it again and again.

Our darling Heidi Lau  joined us, and sweetly captured it all. If I have it my way, this was just the first of what I hope to be a yearly tradition. Because as it turns out, when you pair a handful of powerful, ambitious, and inspiring women with flower crowns, delicious eats, and tropical cocktails to sip on, magical things ensue.

This Bride’s Grandma? Best. Officiant. Ever.

This wedding is what bespoke celebrations are all about. It’s one part Southern and one part Scottish as a nod to the bride’s family heritage. But my very favorite detail? The grandmother of the bride didn’t just attend the wedding, she actually married them. Talk about a day to remember. Vicki Grafton photographed, Monachetti filmed, and we’re headed straight to The Vault.

From Ashlee Virginia EventsSince the wedding was in the fall and took place at Oatlands which is a beautiful lush outdoors venue, we came up with a color scheme that spoke to Margot and also enhanced the gardens. Since the ceremony took place in the lower gardens we celebrated the gardens that already had greenery bloomed, and decided to just highlight the space with floral arrangements at the altar. The bridesmaids dresses were navy, so we choose a color scheme of creams, grey’s, beiges, greens, and whites to compliment the navy.

James is preppy and loves the outdoors so we incorporated some items within the design that he would be surprised about, for example the taxidermy ducks, the bird stamps, and the cigar/whisky bar. Since Margot’s family heritage includes a Scottish background, she wanted to make sure we included the navy tartan pattern that still complimented the color scheme. We had the navy tartan pops of pattern throughout the design with the groomsmen’s pocket squares, blankets and scarves for the guests, and a tartan runner for the guestbook.

From The Bride… I like to think our love story is very “quintessential DC.” James and I met while standing in line on Capitol Hill. My first thought was “this is such a great networking opportunity,” because, of course, we live in DC and both worked in the same sector at that time.

We sent a few emails back and forth, but then quickly lost touch. Fast forward one year — I moved to a house in Glover Park and noticed “this man” who I recognized but couldn’t quite place. Turns out, “this man” would be my future husband James. James reached out to me soon after, and we found out that we lived and worked a block away from one another – the closest thing to fate either one of us has ever experienced.

Our first date was at a bar called Circa in Dupont Circle. A “happy hour” soon turned into a three hour discussion about everything from fantasy football to our favorite music to our love for the outdoors. We then decided to train for a half marathon together, and James spent the next few months trying to keep up with me. It was during those runs that we realized that we had something special. All of this led to an engagement on May 31st, 2014 when we were vacationing at a friend’s lake house while watching the sun set over the mountains.

James is from California, and I’m from Boston, but we’ve absolutely fallen in love with the Virginia countryside since living in DC. I grew up riding horses, and James is an avid fly fisherman, so we like to think we have a little bit of the south in us, even though we didn’t grow up here. Even though the wedding was black tie optional, we wanted to keep the design very simple, and elegant – with a lot of white and green tied in. Some of my highlights was the long farmhouse table (where the wedding party sat), the bourbon/whiskey bar, and the outdoor furniture that we brought in for the cocktail hour.

Our favorite moment by far was when we said our vows in front of our family and friends. It was an incredibly intimate and emotional for us, especially because my grandmother married us. The band was also a highlight – I barely think anyone ate the entire night!
