From Rachel May PhotographyJason and Amy’s April 6, 2016 wedding at Magnolia Plantation in Charleston South Carolina was all you would hope for from an intimate southern wedding. Magnolia Plantation was the perfect setting for the culmination of their love story. The details around the garden, and even a friendly peacock, served as a dynamic backdrop for this lovely couple.

From The Bride…This wedding was intimate and honestly barely more than an elopement with lots of pretty details, and I love that. Really traditional elements like a big wedding cake and a long veil mixed with lots of garden inspiration. It’s just magical there.

Soft Blues + Golds Have Us Dreaming of Fresh Fall Weddings

While most people think of fall in shades of vibrant reds and oranges, this shoot by Andy Barnhart has us reconsidering old ways; blue and gold may just be the most underrated fall color combo yet. With the gorgeous Flying Diamond Ranch as a backdrop, we’re swept away with new wedding wishes – from the Little White Dress Bridal Shop’s Claire Pettibone gown to the sweetest flower girls we ever did see. Hop over to our Vault for more!

From Andy Barnhart Photography… A group of vendors came together for a “blue and gold fall shoot” at Flying Diamond Ranch in Steamboat Springs, CO. It was a crisp, gorgeous fall day with the Aspen trees just starting to turn gold. The touches of soft blue and gray complemented the gold so well. Our model, Sara Eck, looked beautiful in a Claire Pettibone wedding dress, delivered to us by Little White Dress Bridal Shop in Denver, CO. Everything was perfect, the weather, rainbow, the bright blue lake on the property, etc. I even snuck my two daughters in for a few shots. I was honored to work with such a talented team of vendors and hope brides will be inspired by the contributions of this team!

How to Craft the Ultimate Guest Bedroom Retreat

We adore Elsie and Emma of A Beautiful Mess and know without fail everything they touch is going to be pure gold. That headboard is proof. Meet the coolest guest bedroom dolled up by Elsie and Emma with the help of Joss & Main plus grab tips for making the ultimate retreat for all your overnight guests. But beware, they might not want to leave. Psst… shop the look right here.

Tell us about your respective styles. In what ways do they differ?

We definitely have similarities in our styles and pretty much always have. That made it easy to steal clothes from each other growing up. But our homes do feel different in that I (Emma) tend to lean more toward rustic mixed with modern/minimal vibes while Elise tends to lean towards more clean, mid-century/modern with bright pops of color. So we have plenty of things that we both love but I think our overall designs tend to feel different because of some of these differences. But since we love many of the same things, making over my guest bedroom together was super easy and fun!

If you could use three words to describe each other’s style, what would they be?

Emma: Rustic meets Modern and Minimal
Elsie: Clean and Fresh meets Vintage-Inspired

Walk us through the process of designing this space. It’s Emma’s guest room—but Elsie spends a lot of time here—so how much input did you each have?

As with any room makeover we started by identifying our needs and what wasn’t working in the room. Elsie had been in the space plenty before but I texted her a couple cell phone pics as we started discussing. Basically we wanted the room to feel more intentional and less cluttered so there’s room to roll suitcases into the space without feeling cramped. We also identified a few problems that needed to be fixed, like I didn’t have any curtains hung and the last time Elsie and Jeremy stayed there they had trouble sleeping because it was too bright in the room (the window faces out to our street). After that we started finding things on Joss & Main that fit our needs and the colors scheme/vibe we had settled on. We mainly utilized the Idea Board feature on the site so we could see each other’s picks quickly and easily.

Speaking of working together, your blog is just one of the many ventures you collaborate on. Together, you’ve also co-authored two books, curated a line of apparel, and opened a boutique. How does your dynamic differ from project to project?

Yes, we love working together and we (clearly) have too many interests. :) I think we are able to accomplish so much together for two main reasons. First, we are good at getting out of each other’s way. Ha! But really, we both have different strengths and weaknesses and we work together rather than trying to compete all the time. The second thing as since we are family, we both have an added incentive to help the other succeed. We never feel like we are working for just ourselves, we are working hard to help our sister succeed too and I think that helps push us to keep working hard.

Tell us about your favorite pieces in the room.

We both immediately fell in love with the Rattan headboard and chair. They are SO pretty and give the room a really laid back vibe while also feeling natural. One item that doesn’t get as noticed in the photos but made the room feel SO much more cozy is the textured white rug. And one more super cozy element was the Juno Coverlet Set on the bed. We love the texture it adds to the space and it makes getting a restful nights sleep a breeze.

Your in-laws call—they’re coming tomorrow. What’s the first thing you do to the guest room?

Make sure the bed has fresh sheets. I usually remember to remove the sheets and wash after guests leave, but I don’t always put sheets back on until I know someone will be using the room, so that’s the first thing I always check.

Guest room aside, how do you prep the rest of your house for guests?

I usually make sure I have some kind of shareable snacks and also a few beverages. We don’t always buy snack-type foods, since I will eat them all way to0 quickly. :) We mostly keep our pantry stocked with items to make meals with. So if I know guests are going to be around for a weekend or even longer I try to make sure I have some chips and salsa, chocolate, fresh fruit, and good bottle of wine to share should the need arise.

One Couple Treated Their 44 Guests To A Celebration of a Lifetime

Secretly wishing to have a smaller wedding with just your closest friends and family? Take cues from blogger-turned-bride, Amanda of A Glam Lifestyle and her beau who headed to Napa Valley to make their intimate wedding come to life. Think a glamorous Beaulieu Garden party with crystal chandeliers and a sweetheart table decked out in white and blush blooms. Jana Williams captured and UHB-sessed is an understatement.

From the Bride… I was never the little girl who dreamed about her wedding growing up. But, when I met Matt I fell into a real life fairy tale. We worked at the same company at the time. I’d been there nearly a decade and he was there almost five years. Yet, our paths hadn’t crossed. Turns out, he’d been asking around about me. He just hadn’t had the courage to approach me and introduce himself. I can remember his face so clearly that day he came to say hi. It was his boyish smile that made me fall for him. A few weeks later, we knew we were serious when on our second or third date – we were already talking about wedding plans!

I confided that I wanted a small, intimate wedding. Matt had to warm up to the idea a bit, but after we took a trip to Napa Valley a few months into dating and did some wine tasting, he was hooked. And that’s when we first said I love you. A year passed and after a picturesque engagement in Santorini, we came back to Napa to scout wedding venues. I had come across Beaulieu Garden on Instagram and was immediately in love, just like I was with Matt. We started planning our “bohemian glam” themed event and enlisted the help of a stellar planner who ensured it all came together. Our wedding day, although overwhelmingly hot at almost 100 degrees, couldn’t have gone better.

The day was romantic, timeless and chic. The mirrored furniture and lounges, coupled with the crystal chandeliers, gold accents, and white florals with hints of blush truly created a secret garden for our affair. Even the bridesmaid dresses matched the landscape perfectly with their watercolor floral pattern! The bridesmaids and I were able to get ready onsite at the venue in the gorgeous bridal suite. While I was waiting to get ready, I walked around the property and watched it all being set up. It hit me then that 45 of our closest friends and family had made the trip out for our special day. I was about to marry the love of my life. Our wedding planner stopped by and she commented that I was the calmest bride she’d seen! It was true. I wasn’t nervous at all. The words just came out of my mouth and I said, “This is the easiest decision I’ve ever made.”

Matt and I are taking a few months to enjoy newlywed life and then we’ll be off to honeymoon in Bora Bora and New Zealand in November! When it comes to life, we’re definitely lucky in love.

From California to England + One Romantic Winter Wedding In Between

These college sweethearts’ adventures were only getting started when they first met at UCLA. Life took them to Seattle and then across the pond to England, but before they continued any farther, a classic, elegant winter wedding was put on the books. Kay English and Salt Water Studios were there to capture all the action live and the results (here in our Vault) are nothing short than stunning, thanks to the perfect planning of Mary Bradley Events. See it all this way!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/161655019 600 338]

From Mary Bradley Events… Ryan and Andy met at UCLA, where they were introduced by Ryan’s sister (and eventual Maid of Honor). The college sweethearts’ adventure truly began after graduation, with a move to Seattle for Andy’s career in professional soccer. They only called Seattle home for three years, before soccer would them send them across the pond to England (immediately following the wedding, no less!)… but Seattle is where Ryan and Andy got engaged and began planning their dream wedding.

With Ryan’s east coast roots and Andy hailing from England, Ryan’s hometown of Princeton, New Jersey seemed like the perfect central meeting spot for friends and family to share in the celebration. And it certainly didn’t hurt that Princeton University and downtown Nassau Street provided the perfect mix of classic beauty and timeless charm. This is where the bride drew much of her inspiration for the day and the entire wedding weekend.

January 2nd, 2016 turned out to be a warm winter Saturday with plenty of golden hour light, perfect for outdoor photos. Ryan wanted the reception to be classic, romantic, and elegant, but comfortable enough for the two families’ love to be the focal point.

Flowers have always been Ryan’s favorite piece of decor, so the bouquets and tables were overflowing with white hydrangeas, lush greenery, and pops of garden roses. To highlight the elegant floral, the tables were adorned with beautiful crystal candle holders and mercury glass votives, and floor to ceiling twinkle lights illuminated the gorgeous venue. The bridesmaids wore Jenny Yoo gowns in two shades of a soft blue to complement the neutral palette.

This Princeton wedding was everything the couple had dreamed of and more… refined, elegant, filled with lots of beautiful lighting, classic whites and neutrals, and the most wonderful celebration of love!

Check out the bride’s blog, Cheers From The Roses, to see the wedding highlight film as well as proposal and engagement photos… and to follow along on their newlywed adventures living abroad!

Bright + Cheery Modern Loft Wedding in the City

If you happen to love a modern, sleek city wedding and don’t shy away from a bright pop of color, this wedding day just might be your new best friend. Coral charm peonies stole the floral design show and perfectly offset the all-white loft space for both the ceremony and reception. High fives to Kelly Kollar for a stunning gallery that’s all at your fingertips inside The Vault.

From the couple… We live in the East Village/Alphabet City in New York and we got engaged down the street from our apartment in a community garden where the groom is a volunteer member. When it came time to research venues and pick a date, we loved the idea of a springtime celebration in the city – we hoped that our friends and family would be shedding their winter coats, loosening up into spring, and feeling festive and ready to party!

We held our ceremony and reception in mid-April at Studio 450, an all-white loft space with glossy floors, walls of windows, and great views of the city. We didn’t have a specific theme in mind, but in retrospect, the wedding turned out to be somewhat garden-inspired. We wanted the wedding to be simple and elegant with a festive dose of formality to reflect the city setting, but also relaxed and fun. I looked at lots of photos online for inspiration, but ultimately our main wedding planning strategy was to pick great vendors, trust their advice, and let them do what they do best.

Each and every one of our vendors did an incredible job, especially the incomparable Yen and Gary of Real Food Catering who not only took care of all of the fabulous food but also seamlessly pulled the entire day together. Our wedding day was perfect and we are so thankful to our fabulous photographer, Kelly Kollar, for capturing the mood and energy of the day.

We ended up getting gorgeous weather – it was warm and sunny and almost 70 degrees. The “getting ready” part of the day at the Eventi Hotel was laid-back and fun. We did a “first look” at Studio 450 and took photos before the ceremony. The ceremony was short but pretty emotional. We were surrounded by cherry blossom branches, the space was flooded with light, and it felt totally ethereal. One of our favorite details of the day was the flowers (especially all the coral charm peonies!) by our amazing floral designer, Doan Ly. We also particularly loved the calligraphy by Julia Bez for our invitation envelopes, table numbers, place cards, day-of signs, and of course the large mirror at Studio 450 with hand painted guest names and table assignments.

Our cocktail hour took place outside on the terrace as the sun was setting, and we had dinner and dancing downstairs in the space where the ceremony had taken place. We absolutely loved the Silver Arrow Band. At one point, while the band performed “At Last” by Etta James, we looked around the dance floor and noticed that some people had actually stopped dancing to face the stage concert-style and just watch the vocalists sing.

Ultimately, however, the best part of our wedding was simply being surrounded by our family and friends. Thanks to our wonderful vendors, we were truly able to savor the experience and enjoy the day.

From the Bride… I was never the little girl or young woman who daydreamed about her wedding, but the moment I got engaged, it was all I could think about! From the start, I knew what we had to work with—a limited budget, a large guest list and an amazing selection of vendors—and I knew what we lacked. To work within our budget, I quickly realized that we needed a venue with built-in personality to limit the need for rentals to build our own space. Fortunately for us, the perfect venue was somewhere we used to spend A LOT of time in our early days of dating. With its patterned tile floors, indoor and outdoor space, chic design aesthetic and ample space to hold 200+ people, Palihouse West Hollywood was our dream venue come true.

I knew I wanted an emphasis on little details, the ability to blend DIY elements with professional design and an overarching vibe that represented us as a couple. Palihouse embodied this vision, so I took their aesthetic and ran with it. I love the mixture of different styles and sought out to avoid anything matchy-matchy. I mixed neutrals, soft pinks and metallics with the deep blue walls and rich, dark furniture. Edgier materials like glass and metal were paired with organic components like wood and eucalyptus. Chalkboards, mason jars and kraft paper provided a subtle rustic undertone. It all sounds a little crazy, but it worked so well together!

To keep costs down and as a fun way to stay connected throughout the craziness of wedding planning, my mom and I combed through thrift stores once a month and found materials to DIY anything possible. We got beautiful silver serving trays, ornate candlesticks, lanterns, hurricanes of all sizes, vintage suitcases and more. A little spray paint and glue goes a long way… we made the platters on the dessert table purely from thrift store finds! My parents made the escort card display board from an example on Pinterest using a pre-stretched canvas, cork and beautiful fabric overlay. My family saved every wine bottle, beer bottle and glass jar for 6 months (and painstakingly removed the labels!) to use as floral vases. I designed our invitation suite, programs, menus and thank you cards, and I got very resourceful at the Target $1 bin to source many of the signs. My amazing calligrapher, Jasmine at Inkwell LA, made them look like a million bucks!

My signage had a bit of a rustic feel, so to carry that through to the reception, we chose exposed wood tables with eucalyptus garland runners. Using greens over floral centerpieces helped us to save while still having the tables look lush and pretty. My amazing friend Rachel worked at a greens farm, Continental Floral Greens, and helped me every step of the way from choosing the right types of eucalyptus to mix, to sizing, sourcing and even building the garlands by hand. My mom does floral designs as a hobby, so we decided to tackle flowers ourselves. The LA Flower Market is a bride’s best friend – the vendors at CF Greens and Holland Flower Market special ordered King White Proteas, lush peonies, ranunculus and garden roses for the bouquets, chuppah and vases. My family and squad of bridesmaids spent the few days leading up to the wedding at my house putting together some of the most beautiful bouquets I have ever seen… I just might be a little biased, but I could not have been happier with the flowers.

The only things better than the flowers were the donuts. While the guests were on the dance floor, our coordinator, Katie, from Best Day Ever LA, reset the welcome table as the donut table. Guests were very pleasantly surprised with plates full of delicious donuts from Kettle Glazed Donuts. I probably ate 10 of them!

From the donuts at the end of the night to the first sip of coffee the morning of our wedding, it really was the best day of our lives. Every moment from the wedding was my favorite – it’s impossible to pick just one. Some things stand out above the rest, like the fact that our best friend officiated our wedding, that our only living grandparent (who is 91) flew in from FL to be there and that my best friend from childhood came from Amsterdam with her two month old baby. But what I remember most and am the happiest about is the amount of love in the room from start to finish. The feeling of being surrounded by the people you love the most, who have all shown up to support you as a couple, is indescribable. It’s the light at the end of the tunnel when you’re mired in planning details and you think you won’t get through it. You will, and it’s worth it. Enjoy every moment!!

Pancake Lovers, This ‘Cake’ is Your New Go-To.

I’m pretty sure that the very best birthday parties happen at Abby’s house. Every year I’m in awe of the super duper cutie parties she throws for her kiddos, and this year’s Pancakes and Pajamas party she threw for Audrey? Takes the cake. Well, pancake cake that is—the perfect birthday cake for this all-out-fun theme. Grab the recipe below and go ahead, sneak some frosting in the meantime!

ingredients

2 Boxed White Cake Mixes, prepared per instructions
8-9″ round pans (we used disposable pie pans)
Parchment paper and/or spray
5 sticks butter, unsalted and softened
6-7 cups confectioners sugar
3 tbsp milk
1 tbsp vanilla
Confetti sprinkles

instructions

Preheat your oven per the instructions on your cake mix. Make the boxed cake mix. We used Betty Crocker and combined both mixes into one bowl. Prepare your pans by either lining with parchment paper, spraying well with cooking spray (what we did) or using oil and flour to coat the bottom and sides.

You should get about 6 “pancake” cake layers with each box so a total of about 12 layers. We scooped approximately 2/3 cup of batter into the base of the cake pan and made sure that it completely covered the bottom. The amount you use, will depend on the size of the pan you have. There is no exact science and if you need reassurance, remember that no two pancakes are exactly alike so it’s totally fine if your layers are a little uneven.

Bake for 1/2 the time noted on your boxed mix. Ours baked up in about 8-10 minutes. When your cake begins to brown and pull away from the sides, it’s ready to go. Let them sit in the pan for another 10 minutes, then flip them out onto a cooling rack or a paper towel to completely cool.

Meanwhile, make your frosting. You need A LOT of frosting because you’ll also adding a big layer of “whipped cream” to the top. Not whipped cream at all, just a big ol’ blob of buttercream.

In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with your paddle attachment, whip up your softened butter on medium until it’s light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Turn your mixer to very low and slowly add your confectioners sugar, about 1 cup at a time until totally incorporated. Add your milk and vanilla, stirring to combine, then crank that baby up a bit and whip the frosting for another couple of minutes.

*Would be nice to add maple syrup to your frosting. Yum!

Prepare Your Glaze

1 cup powdered sugar
2 tbsp milk

Stir to combine then set aside.

Construct Your Cake

Each cake needs to be completely level, so trip the rounded top off of each layer. It won’t be much cake but it will help the cake to sit tall and even. You can discard or devour the scraps.

Place a small blob of frosting on your pedestal or on a cake round. We constructed ours directly on the pedestal. Add your first layer of cake. Then, using an ice cream scoop, spoon about a scoop and a half of frosting onto your cake. Spread around very carefully, taking time to avoid pulling up any crumbs if you can. You want to go completely to the edges of the cake.

Add your second layer of cake and repeat with the frosting. Repeat this process until your cake is as high as you want. We did about 8 layers without needing additional support. If you are going to go higher, place 4 straws (cut to the height of the cake) into your cake and top them with a cardboard cake round about halfway through.

When you’ve reached the top, add your glaze, spreading it to the edges so that it spills over the sides of the cake. Let sit until it’s set up completely, about 30 minutes. Pop it in the fridge for a faster experience.

Add the “Whipped Cream”

For our topping, you could most definitely use real whipped cream. But we wanted to use a sturdier buttercream so we used the last of our buttercream and a piping bag to create a whipped cream effect.

Place about 1—1.5 cups of buttercream in a pastry bag fitted with a star shaped tip. Sizing here doesn’t really matter but we used a Wilton 21. Pipe a completely filled circle about 4″ in diameter. Then, starting on the inside of the circle and working your way out, pipe an ice cream inspired cone of frosting. Perfection is not necessary. Top with sprinkles!

A Wedding Workshop You’d Vie to Attend

Lindsey Brunk and Taylor Lord are here to show us all that wedding workshops? Well they’re the www.bomb.com. Because this photography + stylist shoot is any proof, we guarantee that we’ll all be vying for a spot next season. See it all in The Vault!

From Lindsey BrunkIt was such a joy to teach this workshop for photographers and stylists alongside Taylor Lord earlier this year! For this editorial, we were inspired by the gorgeous hues of the agave plants on Travaasa’s property and chose a simple color palette of white, cream and dusty green. We absolutely loved seeing our vision come together with this wonderful team of vendors!

Our bride wore a stunning Pronovias Atelier gown that is truly a piece of art. With incredible movement and delicate embellishment, this gown brought an elevated sense of elegance to our shoot while keeping things effortlessly beautiful.

One of my favorite elements of the day was the stunning raised dogwood garland Andi from Pollen Events made for our tabletop. By far one of the most innovative centerpieces I’ve ever seen, the colors and textures of her blooms and greenery absolutely blew me away.

With guests attending from all across the world – Italy, U.S., South America and the North of Mexico – Lizbeth and Massimiliano knew a destination wedding in Merida made perfect sense. They wanted a feeling of old-world charm and the Hacienda San Diego Cutz did just the trick. Elizabeth Medina Photographic Artisans captured the day and you can see it all inside The Vault.

From The Bride…I’m from Baja, California and Massimiliano (Max) is from Italy, luckily he decided to study his PhD in San Diego, where we met in 2007. From the start it was an instant spark and a mutual feeling of being at home in each other’s presence. I now believe that when two souls find each other again, the imprinted memories simply come back.

We dated for a while, with our ups and downs, but with no less love. Max did not believe in marriage, or thus he said so. So when during one of our holidays in Italy he went down on one knee, pulled a beautiful sparkler out of his pocket and proposed, I was startled and speechless! Wedding preparations immediately followed.

We both agreed our wedding was a “once in a lifetime celebration” and we wanted to make ours an affair to remember. We were looking for a destination wedding, since guests would be coming from Italy, U.S., South America and the North of Mexico. We wanted something classical with old world charm. After considering several cities and visiting different venues, we were both enchanted the minute we stepped into the mesmerizing Hacienda San Diego Cutz in beautiful Merida! We immediately knew we had found the perfect place!

Our wedding had a piece of both of us in all the details we selected. Music for me is what makes the world go round, for him it’s food! So as much enthusiasm as I dedicated in selecting each song, he equally meticulously selected each edible item from the initial appetizers to the final after coffee. We had a wonderful wedding planner who made a huge production seem effortless. It was a fantastic night, filled with fireworks, a full orchestra, endless food, decadent desserts but most importantly it was filled with family, friends and love!

From Elizabeth Medina Photographic ArtisansLizbeth and Massimiliano are a well traveled couple. With the groom hailing from Italy and the bride from Northern Mexico, they have made their home on the West Coast of the US. It seems clear to me that this cosmopolitan couple could have been married just about anywhere. Having shared the wedding day with this lovely couple and the large group of family and friends who travelled to Yucatan for the wedding I feel qualified to say that they made the PERFECT choice! Seeing the surprised excitement of the wedding guests as they discovered the wedding locations was a great reminder- Yucatan packs a destination wedding punch that is all its own.

From Claire Durán Weddings & EventsFor this shoot we were inspired by the beauty of Morven Park’s gardens. The objective was to present an elegant, classic and timeless aesthetic, based on a palette of neutrals with a pop of navy blue; while we never intended to make it an English-garden theme, somehow this was always in the back of our minds, just as a very subtle muse. Having created this shoot with a purposefully simplistic feel, we wanted to appeal to the couple who is looking for an understated yet elevated style, and who wants to explore the possible connections between the strong natural beauty of their venue and different carefully curated elements that introduce texture and depth to their events’ styling.

From Amalie Orrange Photography… During the fall of 2013, Francie and Max traveled to Morocco for a semester abroad. It was a small program, less than thirty people total. For the first two weeks of the program, Francie and Max lived in the same apartment building with different host families and each day, they shared a short taxi cab ride to and from the small Moroccan school in the city of Fes where they were taking classes. When they moved to Rabat where they would live for the rest of the semester, Francie and Max were inseparable. They fell in love walking to school together, passing notes in class, eating lunch with each other, and exploring the winding alleys of Morocco’s old Medina.

One thing Francie and Max quickly discovered they had in common was a love for travel. During their semester abroad, they traveled from the Sahara desert on the Algerian border all the way to the top of the highest mountain peak in North Africa. In addition, they toured Madrid, London, Dublin, Paris, Milan, Rome, and Belfast. It was in Dublin after a bar crawl with a group of friends that Francie finally coaxed a sheepish Max into asking her out.

The week leading up to Max’s graduation from the Naval Academy is called Commissioning Week. It’s a week full of parties, concerts, award ceremonies, a formal dress parade, and even a performance by the Blue Angels! The week culminates with the Friday morning Graduation and Commissioning Ceremony. In order to properly enjoy the week’s activities, Max’s parents Cindy and Greg, rented a beautiful home overlooking Harness Creek only a few miles from downtown Annapolis. In between events and parties, Max and Francie, along with a host of friends and family, enjoyed the waterfront home. Well, at least that’s how it appeared on the surface. In hushed conversations behind closed doors, Max spoke with his Mom, Dad, and brother, Chris, smoothing out the final details for the upcoming proposal. As Friday drew closer, the conversations became more urgent and excited. At last, Friday arrived. The entire entourage awoke early to prepare for the long day. Max dressed in his choker whites and Francie, in a beautiful red dress. It was a bright and brilliant day in Annapolis and the stadium was full with well-wishing family and friends watching their loved ones on the field receive their diploma and commission as officers in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The ceremony ended with the iconic image of hundreds of covers flying in the air accompanied by a deafening roar heard all the way to Baltimore.

After too many pictures to count, everybody made their way back to the home on Harness Creek for a party to celebrate. With one milestone out of the way, it was time for a second one. When all of the fifty or so guests had arrived, Max’s dad Greg gathered everybody on the back porch. He gave a speech telling stories, thanking guests who had supported Max throughout the years, and thanking God for all His blessings. Then, Max stepped up to speak. Max thanked the many special people who had come to support him on his special day. He became emotional telling a story about one of his roommates, Auggie, with whom he had shared so many good memories. He thanked his family. Nearly overcome by the power of the moment, his brother Chris came forward and gave him a hug.

And as he gave Max a hug, Chris discreetly slipped a small black box into Max’s hand which was folded behind his back. Max’s Uncle Joe, sitting directly behind Max as he spoke, quietly teared up as he realized what was about to happen. Just as Max began to speak about the impact Francie made on his life, Francie’s older sister, Alston, quietly stepped onto the back porch. She had been secretly spirited to Annapolis from Houston to be there with her family and for Francie. Max smiled and asked Francie to come over to him. He spoke to his best friends and family gathered there, saying: “Now, I’ve thanked a lot of people here today but I think there is one more person that needs a thank you.” Francie stood there, arms crossed, suspicion in her already reddening eyes as the realization of the moment dawned on her. What happened next Max can’t really remember because it was so surreal. But according to his family, he dropped down on one knee, told Francie he loved her and asked her to marry him. Instantly, hands shot up to women’s faces and they cried tears of joy. The guys beamed with huge smiles and chuckled. And Francie began to cry out of happiness as she reached for Max to give him a kiss. When she still hadn’t said anything, Max quipped, “You still have to say yes, you know?!” To that, Francie, who couldn’t look more beautiful in Max’s eyes, choked out, “Of course I say yes!”

From the Bride… We really wanted to have an elegant and fresh feeling for the wedding! With pastels and a few hints of gold, we hoped to create a soft and timeless atmosphere. We did almost all the planning online and via Skype calls because of distance and so each piece was tackled separately. I focused on just loving each detail and hoped they would all complement each other the day of!

My favorite design element was the stunning flowers from Velvet and Twine! They somehow managed to totally understand my vision when I still did not and the peonies they had for us were the largest and most beautiful I have ever seen. From the urns at the altar, to the pew flowers, to the bouquets, and the table pieces, I was in love with all that they did. It was more than I could have ever imagined and they captured the effortless and elegant in the best way possible!

The most memorable moment of the day for me was our exchanging of vows. Standing at the altar in front of all our guests, but only seeing Max in front of me will be a moment that I will always hold close to my heart. I don’t like to be the center of attention but I felt like we were the only two in the Church. All the stress that I had been feeling about the day being perfect melted away as we stood there holding each others hands, committing to love and honor each other for the rest of our lives. In this moment it felt as if the world slowed down and our hearts beat as one. It was a mix of intense adrenaline and a feeling of total calm, and I knew that no matter where life takes us, we can make it through anything together.

Lavender Fields Have Never Looked This Good

Everything captured by Michael and Carina already has a glow about it but when they set up shop in the lavender fields of Charlottesville, Virginia, well, we’re talking a whole other stunning story now. They snapped these two lovebirds as they strolled and snuggled among the lavender and the images in our Vault as as alluring as what we imagine the scent during this shoot must have been. See it all here!

From the Bride-to-be… Kenny and I fell in love during our senior year at Clemson University. We felt at ease around each other immediately, and suddenly our everyday tasks such as homework and grocery shopping felt special and exciting because we were together. We’ve been together for two and a half years, and our favorite way to spend time together now is exploring new cities and eating delicious food!

This engagement shoot felt like an ethereal fantasy; from the luscious scent of lavender to frolicking in the fields hand in hand with my Groom-to-be, every moment was dreamy and romantic. My favorite images from this collection are the ones that encapsulate the way Kenny and I look at each other; there is so much love between us, and I feel incredibly grateful that these photographs capture our love and admiration for each other.

Michael and Carina were incredible to work with. They put us at ease immediately, and we knew we could trust their artistic vision every step of the way. We are so excited to have them shoot our wedding next September!

Pancakes and Pajamas: A.K.A. the best sleepover Party Idea Ever

Every year, I swear that I’m not going to go all out for Audrey’s birthday party. And every year, I lie. In fact, every intro to every birthday post begins with that very sentence (click here to see her 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th6th and 7th). That said, I’m a true blood glutton for punishment and secretly love every last minute of it. And this year, I’m happy to report that there was only a little bit of sweat involved and I definitely didn’t shed any blood or tears so it felt like a win all round. And of course, we had the fabulous Ruth Eileen on hand to snap some of the smiles.

THEME

Pancakes & Pajamas. Code for a sleepover where we ate nothing but junk.

INVITATIONS

The invitation for this year’s party was cute because it also served as a party favor and something that bonded all of the little girls together with a cute “samesies” T. I found small, lidded boxes at the Container Store, then filled with pink paper shred and a t-shirt I found on sale for $3 at Khols. Finally, I printed up a quickie invite on label paper and stuck it right on the top. Since there were only a 8 little girls that all live in our neighborhood, we hand delivered them and asked that the girls wear the T-shirt inside to the party.

DECOR

My entry way chest served as the focal point for the party. It was nice because it was the very first thing guests saw so it was an insta-smile. I had our girl, Jess (who used to do DIY for SMP but is now kicking butt with her own brand) create the Pancakes & Pajamas sign then I filled the table with fun, SUPER easy to make treats. The girls ate Breakfast for Dinner (silver dollar pancakes, eggs, bacon and fruit) at our kitchen table where we had a cute, easy honey comb tissue ball table runner, gold striped plates, YAY! Napkins and a miniature bottle of syrup that I wrote each of the girls’ names on. I wrapped bamboo flatware with some ribbons and dunked our every day glasses in pink chocolate melts + sprinkles.

ACTIVITIES

Food! Eating was a major activity. The girls had a seated dinner with all the fixins. Pancakes, Eggs, Bacon and Fruit.

Karaoke. One of our gifts to Audrey was an inexpensive Karaoke machine and the girls spent a good hour (and could have gone on for longer) singing and dancing. I’m pretty sure this will be a party staple from here on out.

Movie + Popcorn Bar. We featured a Pop It Like It’s Hot Popcorn bar with all different flavors for the girls like s’mores, birthday cake, white cheddar, fruit loop and caramel! The containers and the labels being one of the many props that I end up using over and over again at birthday parties.

Snuggle Station. I gathered all of the random stuffed animals we had in old storage bins and around the house, lined them up on some shelves and had Jess make a “Snuggle Up Buttercup” sign.

FAVORS

I loooooved the favors for this party. I think the best thing about having a small get together is that you can splurge a little on the favors. That said, I looked for bargains and I didn’t waste money on any filler toys that would go in the garbage. I found clear makeup bags from papermart. Then filled with tiny donut erasers, donut lip gloss from dylan’s candy bar, a cute eye mask from H&M, chapstick that I found at Khols, and the big win was a teeny tiny nail polish that the amazing peeps at Gifts for the Good Life sent me as they had a few leftover from a big wedding conference they did.

Party Cheat Cuts!

-Having had a million parties at the house, most of which are pink and sparkly, I was able to re-use decor from parties past which saved a bundle. If you aren’t a nut like I am, ask around as friends often have extra paper plates, ribbon, tissue balls, etc that they are willing to part with.

-For favors, look for small items that come packaged together – I found a set of 6 chapsticks for $3 and donut erasers that came in groups of 3. Saved a mini-bundle.

-For signage, you can hire a calligrapher OR you can cheat calligraphy which is what I did on the tiny syrup bottles. Just write your text in a light pencil in your best cursive. Then pull up your favorite font online and follow the thickness of the letters on top of your already created cursive. You’ll add weight to the sides of the letters, then fill in with paint pen.

-Make your food in advance. I baked the cake layers the week before and popped them in the freezer. Same with the waffle sugar cookies. The day of the party, I made “breakfast for dinner” about 2 hours ahead and kept it in a warming drawer. Meant that I wasn’t scrambling at all when the girls arrived.

-Think about how store bought can translate into amazing…

We bought bagged white popcorn and then dressed it up with different toppings for our popcorn bar. In doing this, we could make the popcorn ahead of time as opposed to popping it at home and then watching it go stale.

We made Donuts & Milk glasses by slicing a small piece out of a mini chocolate donut and sliding it on the edge of the glass. Felt chic and unique but was a total cinch.

Our pancake “cake” was actually just boxed white cake that I baked in really thin layers. It used 2 boxes of mix to create the cake itself – though I did have leftovers (which was great because I used the extra layers for the cake that we enjoyed at Audrey’s family party).

-Dunkin Donuts came in for the dessert table clutch as I used a bunch of sprinkled glazed donuts to really fill up the table and make it look more impressive than it actually was.

Rich hues of blue reflect the Groom’s career

in the Navy and their shared love of the sea

From Wendy LaurelThe bride and groom are Kate and Chris who are both originally from Alaska. Chris is in the Navy and the couple lives here on Oahu now. Chris has a love of naval architecture and Kate is a talented artist. Their wedding details and style reflected all these elements.

Kate chose rich blues for the color of her wedding to reflect the Navy and their shared love of the sea. Bright and deep colored florals accented the hand dyed muslim blue tablecloths. Chris’s love for naval architecture was shown off in the naval blue prints included in the invitation suite and hung at the reception. Kate’s artistic talents created the hand drawn invitations, table favors, table numbering, and signs throughout the reception. Touches of Alaska were included as well such as Kate’s Dad’s antlers from hunting in Alaska. And of course Hawaii was everywhere from the blue sky and ocean to the golden sun and the vibrant palm trees.

Say Hello to the Peplum Dress of Your Dreams

When it came to finding the perfect gown for her Big Day, this beautiful bride wasn’t about to settle. Nope, she tried on no less than 60 (yes, 60!) stunning frocks and when she put on this breathtaking Steven Birnbaum number, well… let’s just say she found “the one.”  From the sleek and sophisticated silhouette to the sweet peplum detail, it was the perfect complement to a day that was classic meets modern in all of the right ways. See it captured beautifully by Alexandra Meseke in THE VAULT.

From Alexandra Meseke Photography… Shannon and James are the kind of couple you dream for and pray for as a wedding photographer. This was one of those working relationships that was just kismet or meant to be.

Every detail of Shannon and Jame’s beautiful wedding was flawless and represented them so perfectly. But more importantly these two are some of the kindest and most generous people the world has to offer.

We took so many pictures that day, and it could have been stressful, but we had so much fun every step of the way with these two and the wonderful support system they had surrounding them.

From the Bride… James and I had always talked about being married in a church and when we visited the restored Hotel at the Lafayette in downtown Buffalo, we knew it was the perfect place to host the reception. It has beautiful high ceilings, lots of light and character, and was spacious enough for our guests to mingle comfortably and dance the night away. We were so thrilled to be sharing our love with all of our family and friends and wanted our special day to be one that was unforgettable!

Our color palette was a mix of ivory, soft gray and pale blush. I chose neutral colors to go along with the brightness and ornate details of our church and reception venue. I would describe our style vision as classically elegant and simple, with a contemporary twist. From my dress to our unique refurbished hotel venue, we kept true to our vision.

My favorite DIY element was the stationery designed by my groom. This included the save-the-dates, invitations, welcome bag inserts, ceremony programs, place cards, table numbers, etc. He put so much thought and detail into creating all of the pieces, and everything reflected us as a couple and the style of our special day.

This is a tough to choose, but my favorite moment was when the church doors opened and I saw James for the first time. I had dreamed of that moment since I met him. There was never a doubt in our minds that we wanted to wait to see each other until the ceremony, and it was better than I could have ever imagined. I shed many happy tears while walking down the aisle to meet him that day.

I was so excited to incorporate spring flowers into our day. I carried white peonies, silver brunia and dusty miller. The bridesmaid bouquets were full of pink and peach garden roses, greenery, silver brunia and dusty miller. The reception centerpieces were a mix of beautiful spring flowers in blush, peach and ivory. We placed open white tulips in hobnail vases on the cocktail tables and baby’s breath adorned the place card table and backs of the head table chairs.

I loved my dress so much because it wasn’t like anything I had seen before and reflected my personal style so perfectly. It was very simple and elegant, but the peplum gave it a fun and contemporary twist. I tried on about 60 dresses and as soon as I stepped into my dress, I knew it was the one I would marry James in.

We wanted to find a way to incorporate our beloved chocolate lab, Rhys, into our wedding, as he is such an integral part of our lives together. We decided to do that with our favors! At each place setting was a cutout cookie of a chocolate lab wrapped in a cellophane bag with a sticker on the back (designed by the groom) explaining that we were making a donation for each guest to a local animal shelter. The cookies were not only so adorable, but delicious too, and we were thrilled that we could help an amazing cause that is so near and dear to our hearts.

Our beautiful and delicious wedding cake was made by a home baker in the area, Carly Richter. We did several cake tastings and she was by far our favorite – her buttercream frosting is so light and airy, just like whipped cream!

One piece of advice I would give to future brides is just to truly enjoy and take it all in – you deserve it! Look around at all of your guests and think about how important they are to you. Take in how much you love your significant other and how incredible you feel that day.
