A Deeply Meaningful, Family-Focused Wedding Day

Danielle and Brendan’s wedding is the definition of a meaningful celebration. In the midst of planning, Danielle’s father was diagnosed with stage IV cancer and the couple reoriented their wedding to what mattered most – her father’s attendance. An amazing lineup of vendors, including L. Marie Events, Karen Hill Photography and NST Pictures, came on board to help and in the end “My father was well enough to walk me down the aisle,” said Danielle. “And I was met by the most patient, supportive, and loving groom. It was perfect.”

From the bride… For the beginning of our engagement, Brendan and I were living in different cities. Needless to say, planning our wedding while apart was difficult. In September 2015, I relocated to Los Angeles and assumed planning would improve. But the move put me in a different time zone from my family and vendors, thus making communication with decision makers a new challenge. Although there were certain logistical difficulties we had to overcome given our distance issues, Brendan and I worked as a team and had the blessing of time. (We were engaged for more than a year and a half.)

We were in the full swing of wedding planning when we faced with our greatest challenge in January 2016: my father was diagnosed with stage IV cancer and living in the emergency intensive care unit of a hospital. Doctors were unsure of his prognosis and the idea of planning a party, albeit our wedding, became impossible to bear. I spent the majority of that winter and spring flying between Los Angeles to see Brendan and New York to see my parents. The future was more uncertain than ever, and we were treating every day with my father as a gift. For a while, we were unsure if the wedding would happen and we decided to put all planning on hold. In February 2016, we made the decision to completely change our arrangements. We did so by taking a step back to acknowledge the things that were most important to us. We wanted to be married in the church we had both grown up in and we desperately wanted my dad attend the ceremony. Anything else would be a bonus.

Given all of the unknowns we were juggling, and in an effort to make the wedding day as manageable and comfortable as possible for my father, we opted to adjust our wedding to a family-only ceremony followed by an intimate dinner. All aspects of the day were pared down, including our guest list and our plans for a tented reception. While some people might hear this and instinctively be upset on our behalves, everything worked out for the best and allowed us to focus on what this day was all about. We felt that our wedding day should be centered around the sacred life partnership we were entering and what that meant for our parents, the individuals who had helped us get to this point in our lives. It was truly the most special day and although it was not what we had envisioned originally, we would not change a thing. My father was well enough to walk me down the aisle and I was met by the most patient, supportive, and loving groom. It was perfect. We’re incredibly grateful to our family, community, and the wonderful vendors who supported us through this entire process. You all made an impact on our wedding and greatly helped us during a bittersweet time.

Glam Mountain Wedding With Fun Pops of Red

Mountain brides, be prepared to take cues from Melissa and Morgan’s rustic-glam day. Designed with vibrant pops of red, burgundy and accented with gold, it’s a wedding design done right and you can see it all here captured by Ruth Eileen.

From Jenna Piper Emrich at Topnotch ResortMelissa and Morgan’s wedding style has been described by their Wedding Planner, Jaclyn Watson, as an “elegant epic party”…and that it was! Melissa and Morgan were dreaming of that perfect mix of a personal and timeless wedding that also turned into a throw-down party with everyone on the dance floor.

With luscious, vibrant hues of red and burgundy and gold accents carefully placed within natural, neutral grey and taupe tones, Melissa and Morgan’s wedding style was classic and fit so well nestled into the Modern-Vermont styled spaces at Topnotch Resort.

Their ceremony, at the Meadowlark Pavilion, just outside the Resort was deeply personal, very unique in tradition (as described below by Melissa and Morgan) and just gorgeous under the natural wood pergola that framed them.

Guests enjoyed fun, small bites like New Zealand Lamb Chops with Mustard-Herb Crust, Spicy Tuna Poke with Avocado on Won ton Crisps, Fried Vegetable Spring Rolls with Spicy Chili Sauce and Mini Lobster BLTs as they mingled on the Mansfield Overlook Lawn amongst the mountain backdrop and modern architecture of Topnotch Resort.

The reception, held in the Mansfield Pavilion Tent, was warm and vibrant with candlelight, lush centerpieces accented by vintage gold vases and modern gold table numbers and a romantic, gauzy fabric draped ceiling. Surrounded by gardens and views of Mount Mansfield, guests enjoyed a three-course meal focused on Vermont flavors of the season including heirloom tomatoes, local cheese, fresh garden vegetables and local beef. Milo Z, the band, really did bring on the party as guests danced well into the evening while enjoying local craft brews and a cigar bar.

From the happy couple, Melissa and Morgan…Our favorite part was the ceremony. We made it deeply personal by writing our own vows and having Morgan’s brother officiate. It was a non denominational ceremony but we wanted to infuse both our Jewish and Armenian cultures so we took the blessing of the common cup tradition that is practiced in Armenian weddings, known as the Kiddish Cup in Judaism, and made it our own by each pouring some of our favorite Vermont beer into a shared cup. Our beloved dog, Jezzie, was also part of the ceremony (roaming around) and she was the inspiration for one of our readings, “How Falling in Love is like Owning a Dog” by Taylor Mali. We were told by countless people that our ceremony was very “us” which we loved.”

NYC Elopement Straight Out of Vogue!

There are elopements, and then there are elopements like Emily & Johann’s epic day. With an emphasis on iconic scenery, designer fashion and endless love, it’s no wonder the images by Katie Grant left our jaws dropped. Dive right into the full gallery here.

From Katie GrantAfter legally marrying in Hong Kong in a traditional ceremony, Emily & Johann decided they wanted to actually start their marriage in style by eloping to NYC for the celebrations. Vows were exchanged in Grammercy Park (where photos couldn’t be taken) and the two then roamed the famous streets of NYC for various iconic shots.

Lyndhurst Castle hosted their wedding meal while the NYC skyline set the stage for their portraits. Emily embraced the Grammercy feel and wore a Netta Benshabu gown for the ceremony with quirky teal Dolce & Gabanna shoes and red lip and then changed into a more classic look for the remainder of her day; sporting a stunning Inbal Dror gown and Louboutin shoes.

4 Winter Beauty Trends to Take You from Ski Slopes to Fireside Cocktails

One thing I struggle with every winter is getting stuck in the same old beauty routine. Sound familiar? Not this year, my friends. It’s time to layer on the metallics, dark berry lips and wow-factor lashes to boot. We’ve teamed up with Tarte Cosmetics and Jennie Kay Beauty to break down four of the season’s hottest beauty trends that’ll take you from the ski slopes to fireside cocktails in sparkling style. Grab the tutorials below!

The best part about layering on these long-wearing looks for the holiday season? Our Tarte makeup bag is filled with essentials that are cruelty-free, life-tested products chock full of healthy ingredients (bye bye parabens, mineral oil, and phthalates!)—giving you the confidence that you’re not further damaging your skin during one of the harshest seasons. Why choose between beauty that works and beauty that’s healthy? It’s time to #RethinkNatural!

How To Prep Your Skin

1. Start by prepping your skin with a few drops of Maracuja Oil. This vegan oil will help give you that radiant glow (without that greasy feel!).

2. To refresh the eyes, use the Maracuja C-brighter™ Eye Treatment, which is packed with maracuja fruit, vitamin C and advanced botanicals to firm and brighten.

3. To keep makeup in place all day long, layer on Timeless Smoothing Primer.

Natural Ski Slope Glow

Say hello to the perfect snow bunny look. Not too undone or overdone, this look will have you heading down the mountain with a sweet glow.

1. We started with a tiny bit of Double Duty Beauty Hybrid Gel Foundation to smooth out the skin. Our secret for a more natural look? (You don’t want to look too overdone on the slopes!) This amazing Double-Ended Camouflage Brush. Apply the foundation with the brush end and blend in or erase with the sponge end. The curved head glides smoothly and leaves you streak free.

2. Dark circles from those après-ski cocktails the night before? Make sure to apply a bit of Aquacealer Concealer under your eyes.

3. For a pinch-the-cheeks-perfect rosy hue, we used ‘Blushing Bride’ Cheek Stain before applying our highlighter.

4. Using the Double-Ended Highlighter Brush and Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Highlighter in ‘Exposed’ we highlighted down the bridge of the nose, cupids bow, brow bones and upper cheekbone for a truly glowing look.

[dotted]

Metallic Liner + Copper Shadow

Don’t want to go heavy on shadow but still want a bit of seasonal sparkle? This is such a fun and natural look!

1. First, apply Tarteist™ Metallic Shadow in ‘Scandal’ with the Double-Ended Shadow Brush tight to the lash line with the black end of the brush and then blend out with the white end. For a more dramatic look, use the tighter bristled side and for a softer look use the looser bristled side. Then, use the highlighter to blend the shadow onto the lid to create a softer look.

2. To add a bit of drama, tightline with The Eye Architect™ Liner & Shadow in ‘Brown/Champagne’. Slightly smug the brown on the lower lid, then use the champagne shadow in the inner corner.

3. Apply Double Duty Palette Highlighter on the cheek bone, then apply exposed blush on the apples of the cheeks using the Double-Ended Highlighter Brush.

4. Curl lashes and apply light coat of mascara.

[dotted]

Dark Berry Lips

Turn up the winter drama with a dark berry lip—perfect for cocktail parties, date night and everything in between.

1. For this look, we kept the same metallic and copper liner look above, but added a bit more blush and drama to the eyes using Tarteist™ Metallic Shadow in ‘Scandal’ and Curl Boss on the lashes.

2. Transform your metallics look with Tarteist™ Quick Dry Matte Lip Paint. We tried two hues: ‘Acid Wash’ and ‘Friyay’, both fun hues for a berry wintry look.

[dotted]

Doll-Like Lashes

For all the winter romance vibes, turn up the volume with these Twiggy-inspired doll like lashes.

1. For this dreamy, Twiggy-inspired look, we started by applying Hybrid Gel Foundation and Aquacealer Concealer using the Double-Ended Camouflage Brush.

2. We then layered on Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in ‘Seduce’ and Highlighter in ‘Exposed’. Followed by Cheek Stain in ‘Exposed’ on the lips.

3. For the eyes, we created a base with Blackened Plum Clay Pot Waterproof Liner using the Etch & Sketch Double-Ended Bamboo Liner Brush.

4. Lastly, we applied our Tarteist™ PRO Cruelty-Free Lashes in ‘Girl Boss’ and layered on Curl Boss mascara.

From Rosmarin Weddings and EventsKatya and Roy are a very interesting and extraordinary couple. Katya was born in a small Russian town, has worked for a long time as a flight attendant, and Roy, a Dutchman, though from his frequent travels for work, can probably be called “a man of peace”. Currently living together in Oslo, they met each other in Moscow, when Roy headed there for work.

When Katya received the proposal (which was very romantic and quite a surprise) the biggest question appeared – what venue for the main day. From the beginning they were considering Moscow, but it was not the story which they dreamed of. Outdoor city ceremonies didn’t seemed so original to people who have seen half of the world. There was great work in choosing location and finally the insanely beautiful, green Corfu was chosen. The complex of three private villas, which could accommodate all the guests and where we organized the gentle, romantic wedding ceremony and dinner.

As for palette, we chose pale lemon colors, gray and silver. This palette was perfectly fitted into the surroundings and gently contrasted with a rich greenery all around. Pastel printings in a watercolor style perfectly complemented the whole concept. It should be noted that the guests carefully responded to the bride’s request and chose outfits matching these colors.

The villa was a wonderful wedding location. First, comfortable for all guests, and no need to organize additional transfers.. Secondly, such a beautiful interior and the beautiful nature all around contributed to the wedding photos, which were captured by the talented Julia Kaptelova. Third, for a small family wedding (and in this case, only 30 guests), the villa was incredibly cozy and a great atmospheric decision.

It was a very touching day, Roy cried twice, Kate as the bride, of course, too. There was a lot of warm words from friends and family, fun and dancing. At the end of the evening, the village Barbati, where the villa is located, lit up from fireworks.

Sparkly Crop Tops Are 2017’s Engagement Pics Must Wear Piece

These two fell in love the old fashioned way (and probably my favorite way)… over love letters. But when it came time for their engagement pics, this Bride-to-be went chic and modern with a sparkly crop top ensemble that’s giving us major fashion inspo. Koman Photography captured it all for us to ooh and aah over – and leave us excited to see the stylish vibe they’re bound to take for their wedding day too!

From the Bride-to-be… DESTINED. This is the perfect word to describe us. Eric and I first met in Seoul, Korea back in 2002. We were introduced through a mutual friend. I was teaching English after graduating from college and he was serving a tour with the United States Army. We instantly connected and became close friends, enjoying each other’s company. Unfortunately, due to our careers our friendship never blossomed into a romance… not until 13 years later. After Korea, we lost touch, going our own separate ways. We randomly reconnected in October 2015, just days before he left on another overseas assignment. After that brief encounter, we were apart again (some 7,000 miles away!!!), but Eric knew that we were meant for each other.

Being fully convinced, he decided to pursue me in the most romantic way possible, he started by writing love letters. Although I wasn’t sure at first, it took me less than a few weeks to realize he was the one. Eric surprised me with a heartfelt proposal during a hiking trip we took along the coast of Carmel, CA. Wedding planning started immediately and the minute we confirmed the venue, everything else fell seamlessly into place. We knew that we wanted a small and intimate wedding to share our union with family and friends. We are very excited to start our lives together as ONE.

Classic Southern Wedding With Non-Stop Smiles

A classic at home Southern wedding just can’t be beat and when the Bride and Groom can’t stop smiling like these two? Well, it doesn’t get much better than this and we’re loving every moment. Kristin Sweeting captured them all for us to soak up so if you need a little pick-me-up, head to our Vault gallery pronto! You will not be disappointed!

From the Bride… It is difficult for me to pick out a favorite part of the day – everything truly was magical for me – but if I had to distill it down to two favorite memories I would choose the Second Line from the church to the reception and sitting down to dinner. The Second Line was an absolute blast – we loved getting to walk out of the church as husband and wife, get to congregate with our wedding party and parents, and take the moment to just be excited together. When the band started up and started marching, it was fun to see the eyes of our surprised guests and get to get in the party spirit. I’ll never forget how big the smiles were or how gleeful I was during that walk – all I saw was Ross as we got to lead the church of our people to the reception!

Sitting down to dinner was a personal favorite moment because it offered the opportunity to get to take a moment to look around and soak in the wedding.Throughout the planning of the wedding, I had my heart set of being able to assign our guests to tables and have everyone sit down for dinner. Ross and I both grew up in families where getting together for dinner was a special time to reconnect and enjoy each other. My vision was that dinner during our wedding would feel like a giant dinner party where we could introduce our families and friends and continue to build our community. Since we grew up in different cities and went to different colleges, Ross and I had many friends who had never met, so we were excited to get to see people form new friendships. When Ross and I sat down for dinner at the head banquet table, it was a joy to look across the yard and see our friends and family laughing over a glass of wine or deep in conversation over their plates.

This sounds like a bit of a contradiction, but we wanted the wedding to feel formal and comfortable at the same time and, ultimately, we wanted the wedding to glorify God and celebrate the wonderful community that Ross and I have been blessed with. Our faith is very important to Ross and I, so we were very intentional about making sure that the ceremony was not just a celebration of us, but celebration of God – whether it be from having a string quartet play hymns as our guests were seated or special scriptural readings, we did not want the sole focus to be on us.

In terms of the reception, we wanted the wedding to be a joyful, fun, and traditional celebration filled with Motown music, cocktails, tasty food, and some surprises. My favorite parties make you feel like you are welcome when you show up dressed to the nines and when you’ve kicked your heels off for the night. Something that I consider sacred is sitting down to dinner with those that I love – Ross and I constantly host people at our home for dinner, brunch, or just a glass of wine and we wanted everyone to feel the magic of a good meal with good friends. Since the wedding was outside at my parent’s home, we tried to utilize the variety of spaces to spread out the parts and make every stage (cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing) seem special. We had seating areas and bars (and a bourbon bar!) spread throughout these areas, so that guests could feel comfortable if they were dancing or chatting or enjoying each other.

We felt so joyful and loved the whole day and wanted our people to feel that way as well!

Citrus-Infused Florida Wedding

My city currently looks like the inside of a snowglobe, so to say this sunny Florida wedding came at the perfect time is a total understatement. Infused with pops of citrus, it’s a much-needed dose of Vitamin C and Jacqui Cole Photography + Voila Cinematic are to thank for the capturing every bit.

Whimsical

From the couple… On a brisk February morning, just 8 months after their first date, Perry took Lindsay to a spot they’d visited a few times on weekend trips to Boca Grande. With prior arrangements and adventure in his voice, he led her to the top of the Boca Grande Lighthouse, overlooking the Boca Grande Pass and the Gulf of Mexico. Insisting she go before him like any other time, Lindsay stepped onto the catwalk first. When she turned around from taking in the view, Perry was down on one knee, topping all adventures they had shared together.

In agreement that a long engagement was not a priority, wedding plans commenced immediately. It was also a no-brainer that the affair would take place at the historic Gasparilla Inn, a place Lindsay had loved all her life.

Since we come from Florida families deeply rooted in agriculture, to incorporate some of these elements seemed only appropriate. My goal was to fuse Florida’s ‘woods and water’ in complete southern elegance and knew a citrus botanical would be the perfect element to compliment the Inn and its tropical locale and strongly nod to our Florida heritage. We incorporated the citrus from start to finish: from our save the dates to our cocktail stirrers. It’s something we wanted to stand strong, like our families who’ve long stuck with Florida’s citrus industry despite its ongoing hardships.

And like any true southerner, I adore a good monogram. In most of our details, I coupled the two to strengthen the personalization. I chose soft, muted colors for these details. I wanted the colors to reflect the island while keeping in mind we’d marry in October. I went a step further: Perry’s and my favorite colors are peach and green and these became our primary colors for everything.

Sharing college experiences with Old South traditions (Nashville, TN & Oxford, MS) sparks our love for a formal affair but we also feel nothing beats a down-home good time. For this, I aimed to create an elegant, yet laid-back atmosphere, which was a bit of a challenge. Customized corn hole boards and lounge seating on the lawn for cocktail hour were perfect additions for this relaxed vibe.

My favorite moments were our first look and our first dance. Our first look allowed Perry and I to have an intimate moment and really take in the magnitude of the day before being surrounded by family and friends. It also relieved so much angst, letting us relax and be fully present during our ceremony. Not to mention the time it saved by getting those one-on-one bride and groom shots out of the way so we could enjoy cocktail hour with our family and friends. It was during our first dance when I realized for the first time that I was his wife; that we would have each other forever. Being in his arms in that moment was the best feeling.

5 Tips for Infusing Your Holiday with Bright and Happy Color

While red + green hues are the traditional holiday decor route and beautiful in their own right, bright, happy colors can be festive too. And who would know better than Kendall Simmons, the Queen of colorful decor? She’s laying out 5 tips for infusing your holiday with the rainbow. From blooming trees to signature sips, read up on a color happy holiday with gorgeous images by Alyssa Rosenheck.

Who says Christmas has to mean red and green? Not me! The decor in my home is a rainbow of bright, saturated color, so I wanted to make sure that my Christmas decor felt at home with everything else!

My basic and unwavering rule of thumb when it comes to Christmas color is… More is more! Here are a few of my tips for infusing your Christmas with color.

Incorporate vintage!

My favorites are mid-century Shiny Bright ornaments in pinks and blues, as well as gorgeous glass tree toppers from the same era. They’re available in a rainbow of beautiful colors, and they’re a lot of fun to keep an eye out for at antique malls and estate sales throughout the year.

Lights!

Colorful Christmas lights are a given when you’re shooting for a brightly colored Christmas. I love to combine multi-color strands of standard Christmas lights with throw-back large ceramic lights. The big lights equal a big statement.

Gifts!

When it comes to gift wrapping supplies, steer clear of actual holiday trimmings. Instead, make a beeline for non-holiday specific, unique wrapping paper in bold, multi-color patterns and black and white prints. Mix and match your bright papers with an equally bright assortment of satin ribbon for punctuation.

Bring on the fresh flowers!

Christmas doesn’t mean that your only flower options are poinsettias and paper whites. When shopping for Christmas flowers, buy what you love, whether it’s red and green or not! You’ll be surprised how easily pink, yellow, orange or purple flowers will work with the rest of your holiday decorations.

Cocktails!

When planning your holiday party menu, mix it up with a colorful signature drink. It’s just more festive that way!

Romantic + Playful Engagement Session

Leading up to their big day, Claire and Chris knew they wanted images that captured their love to the fullest. They chose California, where Chris proposed and brought on an entire team including Jen Huang to make their dream portraits happen. One part romantic and one part playful, it’s a session that captures their relationship to a T.

[dotted]

PART ONE: ROMANTIC

[dotted]

PART TWO: PLAYFUL

From Jen Huang… As a photographer, I always look for different ways to tell a couple’s story, and this session was the perfect opportunity as Claire and Chris wanted to create a unique and beautiful set of images to celebrate their union. Claire and Chris are getting married in Hong Kong, but wanted to incorporate the place that Chris proposed – California.

They also wanted to have portraits that not only showcased the fun and playful engagement side, but also the deeply romantic bridal side. We shot in a deeply wooded oak grove and along high mountain cliffs. Claire also brought on a team of magnificent artists for her shoot – including Davia Lee Events, Chiali Meng Artistry and Camellia Floral Design.

Although she kept the same hair and makeup and bouquet, her attire and location changes in the shoot were able to highlight the two distinct styles that we were aiming for. It takes an amazing team to produce something like this, and I’m so thankful for having a wonderful bride with a beautiful vision, and the talented friends who were able to put it all together.

How to Make Star Wars and Oscar De La Renta Fall in Love

How this duo managed to mash up Christmas, Star Wars, Oscar de la Renta and nighttime Bloody Mary’s in a way that actually feels really chic and dare I say…gorgeous!? is beyond me. But they did and I’ll take it. Over and over again. It might have something to do with the fact that LVL Weddings & Events was behind the pretty and that B&G Photography was on hand to turn that very pretty into something Winter dreams are made of, but regardless, we’re toasting to the bold and yet entirely beautiful wedding that is making us smile from ear to ear. Click here for even more!

From the Bride…The wedding took place in our hometown of Pasadena, California twelve years after we started dating. Our wedding had touches from two of our passions: Christmas and Star Wars. The bride’s birthday is in December, and Christmas has always been her favorite time of year. A Christmas wedding was a must have, and the wedding took place almost exactly one year after being engaged. The wedding weekend was kicked off with a private viewing for friends and family of Star Wars: Force Awakens, other Star Wars themes included the groom’s tuxedo studs, socks, and the cake topper.

Our event celebrated our long history and included over 25 people who graduated from our same high school, nine of which were in our wedding party. The groom’s college tennis team was also represented by fourteen members. The ceremony took place in the same church that the bride was baptized in, as a baby. The reception, at the Valley Hunt Club, was just two blocks from the groom’s parent’s house – where the rehearsal dinner took place the night before. One of the best moments of the night was the parent-child dance in which more than thirteen mother/son and father/daughter pairs danced to the Beatles’ All You Need is Love.

The bride was thrilled to be wearing an Oscar de la Renta gown and holiday-red Ferragamo shoes. She also wore pearls borrowed from her mother and a sapphire ring borrowed from her 98 year old grandmother, who was in attendance at the wedding. The groom wore a custom tux from Indochino and his wedding band has been passed down for three generations. It is the same ring that his late grandfather wore.

The wedding party included the bride’s sister, brother, and 2-year-old nephew as well as the groom’s two brothers and many friends. The bridesmaids wore navy Alfred Sung full length dresses and the groomsmen wore grey Indochino suits. The ring bearer wore a sailor suit made by the bride’s mom.

Other highlights included the bride’s childhood piano teacher playing the piano during the ceremony, including Silent Night and Joy to the World as guests sang along. The dessert table had a cake with a Star Wars topper and a macaroon Christmas tree, the bride’s favorite cookie. The bride’s choice cocktails were a fig mojito and cranberry spritz and the groom’s choice cocktails were an old fashioned and a bloody Mary. Later in the evening, special hot bourbon apple ciders were served to guests. The meal was a holiday feast of pumpkin soup, prime rib, roast turkey, Brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes, roasted spaghetti squash, and more. The reception also had jars filled with silver and gold cranes that the bride, groom, and bride’s family folded for luck.

The 12 Hottest Baby Name Trend Predictions for 2017

With a 2017 baby in the works, I was especially excited to get my hands on this new year baby name hot list from Nameberry. Because naming someone is seriously tough business. If you’re going through the process yourself, you know! But thankfully, we’ve got a little more inspiration headed our way as we say goodbye to 2016—from the hottest name-starting vowels to the coolest prepster picks, let these 12 New Year naming trends inspire you!

From NameberryAmerica’s new conservative turn signals a complete reinvention of baby names. The newly-dominant red staters favor names that defy convention: invented names with unique spellings and nontraditional gender identities. And parents of all political beliefs are embracing names from a range of fresh sources—gods and wild animals, spiritual beliefs and childhood heroes—that all embody power. We foresee more than mere baby name trends in 2017: We predict a full-blown baby naming revolution.

Biggest Big Picture Trend: Ultimate Power Names

Royal, Saint, Augustus, Kylo – those names may have signaled power in 2016, but next year parents will skip directly to the head of the power line. Yes, we’re talking about God, whose names will be conferred on an increasing number of babies. Expect to meet lots of little deities with names drawn from multicultural mythology: Thor, Persephone, Odin, Freya, Jupiter, Luna, Atlas, Clio, Orion, Morrigan, Pandora, and Zeus.

And then there are those babies who are literally named God: Five boys in 2015, along with five named Yahweh, 20 named Lord, 27 called Savior, and 40 baby girls named Goddess. And Messiah, which a Tennessee judge tried to ban five years ago by claiming there was only one, has doubled in popularity: More than 1500 baby boys were named Messiah in 2015. Evil power baby names are back too. We foresee more babies named Lucifer as well as as Lilith, a demon of Jewish folklore, and Kali, the Hindu destroyer.

Pop Culture Influence of the Decade: Literary Names

Naming your child after a favorite literary character gives you a lifetime’s worth of intellectual credibility without having to actually (yawn) crack a book. But there’s power in these baby names too, the power of literature to endure and inspire no matter what’s happening in the world. The most favored names are those that summon the childhood magic of reading, the names of storybook characters such as Eloise, Maisie, Sawyer (for both genders), Matilda, Ramona, Fern, Alice, and Holden. Even more upscale: Shakespearean names, from Juliet and Romeo to Cordelia, Ophelia, Cassio, Orlando, and even Puck. And then there are authors’ names, last and first: Austen, Bronte, Poe, Wilde, and Angelou; Dashiell, Willa, Louisa, and Zadie.

Crazy Celebrity Trend Most Likely to Catch On: Inspirational Names

When Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna named their newborn daughter Dream, a baby naming trend was not merely born but launched out into the wider world. Inspirational names have been on the increase for a few years now, and include such positive virtue names as Justice, True, and Grace along with names that suggest serenity such as Pax, Bodhi, and Zen. The Puritans used virtue names like Mercy and Patience (both growing in popularity again) to inspire those qualities, and parents today are reembracing the practice.

Most Meaningful Trend: Feminist Heroine Names

We may still be waiting for the first female president, but parents are adopting the first names and sometimes surnames of feminist heroines as honorifics for their daughters and sometimes sons: Ruth (Bader Ginsburg), Ada (Lovelace), Simone (de Beauvoir and Biles), Emmeline (Pankhurst), Bell (Hooks), Eleanor (Roosevelt), Rosa (Parks), Vita (Sackville-West), Zelda AND Fitzgerald, Georgia AND O’Keefe, Frida AND Kahlo. Sojourner AND Truth. Parents are also looking to first and last names of female ancestors on their own family trees.

Hottest Vowel: O at the Start

In the recent past, boy names ending in O were the cat’s meow—Milo, Theo, Arlo–and then came girls with that o-sound ending—Harlow, Marlowe, Margot, Juno. Now that vowel has run around to the beginning position and we’re seeing an explosion of names starting with O. For girls, the movement has been led by Olivia, the #2 name for two years, followed by Olive, and now Ophelia, Octavia, Olympia, Oakley and Oona. For boys, Oliver, Owen, and Oscar have been popular and will be followed by Orson, Otis, Omar, Otto, Oberon, Osias, Osiris, Osmond, and Oz.

The New Conservatives: Prepster Names for Boys

A fresh generation of preppy names for boys reflects the new gang of rich, privileged guys leading the country. Hot and getting hotter is the sophisticated s-ending, as in Brooks, Hayes, Briggs, Yates, Ames, Oakes, Niles and Collins. And then there are the longer, loftier, ancestral-sounding surnames, including Anderson, Winston, Remington, Kensington, Montgomery, Whitaker and Winchester.

Longest-Running Revival: Downton Abbey Names

Yes, this addictive Masterpiece Theater British period drama may have ended its six-year run, but its impact on girls’ names will only continue to grow in 2017. The attractive (and not so attractive) members of the Crawley family managed to resurrect some dusty Victorian names and give them new life. We expect to see more of the already-popular Cora and Violet along with Sybil, Rosamund, Edith, Isobel, Daisy, Elsie, Marigold, and—perhaps most surprising of all—Mary, in the coming year.

Trend We Can’t Endorse: Red State Baby Names

If Donald Trump’s surprising win in November’s presidential election is any indication, we’re in for a lot more baby names with unconventional spellings, nontraditional origins, and violent references. Our groundbreaking analysis of the large divide in baby names that dominate in Red States vs. Blue States showed the Top 5 names for girls in states that vote red are the individualistic Blakely, Brylee, Kennedi, Kyleigh, and Journee, while the Top 5 boys’ names are Kason, Cason, Braylen, Chandler, and Lawson. If the political climate is any indication, the next four years will bring more girls named Londyn than Leila, boys called Gunner rather than Theodore.

Most Unexpected Genre Switch: Fierce Animal Names for Babies

Baby names don’t have to be names anymore: They can be place names, surnames, color names, and yes, animal names. Bear has gone from Crazy Celebrity Baby Name (Alicia Silverstone, Kate Winslet, Jamie Oliver) to mainstream choice, given to 134 baby boys in the US last year. Other fierce animal names on the rise for babies, mostly boys: Fox, Wolf, Lynx, Tiger, Falcon, Hawk, and Lionel. Coming soon: Puma, Jaguar, Python.

Coolest Nature Names: Water Names

Parents have taken a deep dive into the cool and refreshing pool of names related to water. A trend jumpstarted by River Phoenix and sister Rain, it continues to broaden and deepen, but sans the old hippie vibe. Most prominent are bodies of water—Bay, Lake, Ocean/Oceane, Rio, Brook, and especially River for both sexes. But we also predict the rise of related names such as Harbor, Bayou, Aqua, Ford, Marin/Marina, and Delta, and specific waterways like Nile, Arno, Hudson and Caspian. Also on the upswing: name with aquatic meanings —Tallulah, Mira and Kai.

Name Trend Ready to Jump the Shark: The Ellies and the Addies

A lot of parents start with a nickname they love and work backwards, which is what happened – happened a lot – over the past decade with names that could be shortened to Ellie and Addie. In the Top 300 are Ella, Eleanor, Eliana, Elena, Elise, Eliza, Addison, Adalynn, Adalyn, Adeline, Adelyn, Adelaide, and Adelynn, all of which can and often are reduced to Ellie or Addie. (Ellie herself is also in the Top 50). Adorable nicknames, yes, but there are now enough Ellies and Addies to take the top two spots on the girls’ popularity chart. Meaning: enough.

Broadest Trend: Anything Goes on Birth Certificates

For 2017, we foresee a continual broadening of what can be considered a baby name. There will be more word names and place names and unexpected hero names (Bowie took off soon after the singer’s death this year), and every category will be stretched to its extreme. Flower names have already moved beyond Rose and Lily to Zinnia and Azalea, so why not Chrysanthemum or Begonia? If you can fashionably name your baby Bear or God or River, why not Dog or Devil or Deluge? For better or worse, it’s truly a time of anything goes!

Say Cheers to the Holidays with the Coziest Cocktail Party

Crafting a cozy winter cocktail party is not as hard as you might imagine. With an easy checklist of essentials, this fireside gathering can be recreated and it’s as perfect as can be for the holiday season. We turned to our go-to for effortless entertaining, the Chinet® brand, to handle all the heavy lifting and paired their line of coordinating products with our favorite seasonal details. Think a crackling fire, winter greens and a delicious spread of small bites. It’s a recipe for party success and we’re showing you just how to map out this beauty on your own.

Keep ’em Cozy

Our approach to this party was two-fold. Cozy and comfy with moments of gorgeous glam. First let’s talk cozy. Fireside couch lounging was at the center of the details. We wanted our guests to never have to leave that beautiful spot if they so chose so we brought the food and cocktails to them. An oversized coffee table made the perfect home base for a large assortment of appetizers that guests could nibble on all night long. We also pulled in a beautiful bar cart that served as a festive drink station home base. And nothing brings the season to life like a delicious holiday cocktail. We have a recipe for our Cranberry Wine Spritzer coming up next.

In keeping with the look and feel of an elevated cocktail smorgasbord, we made sure guests had all the necessary tools for wining and dining at their fingertips. Chinet® Cut Crystal® appetizer plates and cutlery were set out on pretty gold trays for easy access. Cocktails were pre-poured in Chinet® Cut Crystal® stemless wine glasses and lined up for action. These simple pieces from the Chinet® Cut Crystal® fully coordinated line made this holiday bash a million times easier.

Make it Sparkle

When it came time to add in festive glam we chose details that truly sparkled. Neutral throw pillows on the sofa and chairs were swapped for deep emerald and paired with a faux-fur throw. And it wouldn’t be a holiday party without a touch of gold. Metallic accents like the gold throw pillows and gilded serving trays added that extra something special.

And we can’t forget all that pretty wintry greenery. Fresh succulent plants were repotted in gold votives to dot our table. A quick trim of some wintergreen trees and bushes right from the yard (literally!) provided us with all the greenery accents we needed. A few branches wrapped with floral wire formed the cheery garland on the bar cart. Above the mantle, a slew of white pillar candles and some sprigs of greenery and succulents made for a fresh, wintry accent.  These details all make for a simple yet totally gorgeous approach to easy holiday entertaining. Make it green and make it sparkle. That’s our motto!

This cocktail party is proof that whipping your house into holiday entertaining mode is as easy as can be. Give your guests warmth, food and something pretty to look at and we promise, they will be happy campers. And give yourself the gift of Chinet® line of products, and you too will be happy as a clam. Because the only thing better than simple pleasures, is being able to enjoy them without dish duty looming over your head. So go ahead and plan that cozy winter soiree this holiday season and make sure the Chinet® brand is at the top of your guest list.

Colorful Charleston Wedding With The Brightest Blooms Ever

When wedding industry vets get married, there’s a pretty good chance it’s gonna be gorgeous. Need proof? Check out this colorful Charleston wedding of one of the floral designers of Branch Design Studio. From Dana Cubbage WeddingsI have known Eliza for a few years now and have worked with her more times than I can count. She is one of the talented floral artists at Branch Design Studio here in Charleston and when she contacted me last year right after she got engaged, needless to say I was THRILLED!! It’s always such an honor when another industry colleague asks you to be a part of their wedding day. I knew Eliza’s wedding day would be incredible and I have to say… it was everything I envisioned and SO MUCH MORE!!

Naturally, the florals were breathtaking. The ladies at Branch truly outdid themselves for Eliza’s big day. So much texture and so many bright colors… I was in absolute HEAVEN! Eliza’s blush tulle ballgown was a definite showstopper and every single detail of the day was thoughtfully addressed. The Gadsden House was the PERFECT venue for this garden-inspired soiree and the weather couldn’t have been better for Eliza and Ben as they said “I do!” in front of their family and friends. Lauren and her team at ELM Events did such an outstanding job. Everything was pure perfection and I’m still on cloud nine!! I could honestly go one for days about this wedding, but I’ll just let the photos do the talking.

Rustic Elegant Texas Wedding Full of Love

While they may have crossed paths years ago in the military, it wasn’t until they had a second chance at love and life that they really were able to kick off their happily ever after. So, full of gratitude and love, these two said “I do” and celebrated with a rustic, elegant Texas affair, coordinated by Emily Leach, and captured by Julie Wilhite. It’s a fall fete sure to inspire – see every pretty pic in our Vault right this way!

From Julie Wilhite… Jennifer and Tim met while both working at the Wounded Warrior Project, an organization dedicated to providing unique, direct programs and services to injured service members. When Jennifer moved from Florida for the job, she vowed to remain single for at least a year in her new city. Yet two months later, she found herself on a first date with Tim. Charmed, she quickly changed her mind about staying single and they have been inseparable ever since.

They realized that they shared many similarities and experiences, both personally and professionally. They were even deployed overseas at the same time and they often ponder if they ever crossed paths, as she was a flight medic and Tim was severely injured just three weeks before coming home from his seven month deployment. Tim was medically retired after losing his left leg below the knee and Jennifer separated from the military after that deployment. Now, ten years and many not-so-happy-ending relationships later – they met one another and the rest is history.

Although they voiced no doubt that their wedding would be both beautiful and fun, they were genuinely most excited for one thing: to be married. They both had nearly lost faith in the idea of settling down based on their past relationship experiences, so they truly feel beyond blessed to have found one another.

As Jennifer says: A wedding is the ultimate celebration of two people overcoming life’s many twists and turns to get to this point. Tim came very close to losing his life, so this wedding is a time for us to reflect on the blessings of each other and, in a sense, second chances.

They didn’t necessarily have a theme; but more of a focus on gratitude, love, and celebrating their union wholeheartedly. Their outdoor celebration was many things, although heartfelt, beautiful and simple are the words that come to mind. The wedding took place in the scenic Garden Grove just outside of Austin, Texas. The design was kept soft and natural with romantic, feminine touches throughout the details. Lush florals in a range of neutrals including cream, beige, and blush were accented by bold plum and hints of seasonal fall foliage. Wood accents and a feminine color palette carried through into the stationery and signage. The party was all housed under a whimsical canvas tent illuminated by string lighting that has us swooning still! Their guests were a riot, speeches and music performances shot straight to your heart and the details were not to go unnoticed. Beyond the signage, our favorites were the laser cut name cards, gold flatware + celebratory favors!

All vendors involved can attest that they are truly the sweetest couple. It was our pleasure to make their special day everything they dreamed of!

Food + Wine + Hip Hop Music = Our Kind of Wedding

I’m just going to say this. A really good wedding boils down to three key ingredients: the food, the booze and the music. If you can nail those three elements, no matter what your style might be, your wedding will go down in the books as being the best wedding ever. And this one – photographed to utter perfection by Corina V. Photography and planned with such attention to each gorgeous detail by Ashley Pigott – is right up there at the top. Plus it features the most gorgeous dress we’ve ever seen as a total bonus. Click here to see even more!

From the Wedding Planner, Ashley Pigott…Absolute perfection – those words have never rung more true than on Karen & Matt’s wedding day. The heat of the summer had faded and what remained was the most picture perfect day, sun shining, clear blue skies and two of the most beautiful people I have ever had the opportunity to work with.

Karen and Matt wanted to feel as though they were at their cottage, which was under construction and would not be ready in time to host their guests. They fell in love with the grounds and charm of Miller Lash House before Karen set off to work abroad for 6 months. They booked the space knowing that the tent on the grounds and garden setting would allow their guests to feel as though they had left the city.

Lots of greenery and wooden elements with varying shades of purples as accents. Each Bridesmaid wore a unique gown, and we matched each bouquets with the same colour Mokuba Ribbon. Guests were greeted by a string trio playing some of Karen and Matts favourite songs. The ceremony was intimate and beautiful under the late summer sun. Cocktails included Sangria, a nod to one of the couples favourite cottage beverage. We designed a green wall that hung each place card individually with lavender ribbons. This wall was repurposed as the backdrop to our Polaroid Photo Station after dinner where guests snapped selfies and group shots then wrote messages to the couple acting as a guestbook for them to keep.

The tent was designed with the natural elements of wood harvest tables, garlands of greenery and white blooms scattered throughout. An added mix of crystal candles, gold beaded chargers and gold cutlery elevated the rustic feel and brought through the grace and elegance of Karen, our stunning bride, a classic beauty. As the sun set, and magic hour was upon us, the light that filled the tent and warmth of their friends and family created the most magical setting. A night to remember for a life time. And lets not forget the grooms Hip Hop performance to kick off the dancing, lets just say everyone was out of their seats and on the dance floor within seconds.

From Karen (the Bride)…I know it’s cliche, but it truly was the best day. Even a few months later, we are still relishing in the love we felt surrounded by. The most important element for us was for everyone to have a good time. We wanted to throw an epic party and still be true to ourselves and what we love. We love good food and wine (and hip hop music), but we are pretty relaxed and casual people and wanted to focus on what we love most – being with our family and friends.

Working with our planner – Ashley Pigott – and all of our vendors was a breeze – we count ourselves as very lucky. Especially because we were planning from afar and most of our meetings happened over Skype or FaceTime.

Ashley was with us every step of the way and was able to translate our wishes into the dream wedding. We had a great backdrop to work with – the stunning grounds of Miller Lash House. It is so quaint and charming and makes you forget you are in the city. The natural greenery both at the ceremony site and surrounding the tent lent itself to the relaxed vibe we were going for.

For my bridesmaid squad of 8 girls I wanted each of them to feel comfortable and pick out their own dress and colour. I gave some guidance with a colour palette that was inspired by the early evening sky – greys, purples, and pinks. I have always loved sunsets and the variety of colours, subtle and bright, that come out at that time of day. We had a blast going together to try on dresses. A wonderful moment was seeing all of them dressed up on the big day – I hadn’t seen all the colours and dresses together until that moment and it just worked out so well.

We worked with a wonderful florist – Gisele from Nous Design Group who, after meeting for two hours, just understood what we wanted. The final setup literally took my breath away.

The beauty of our photographs really speak to the talent of our photographer Corina. Corina was amazing to work with – she was there to make us feel comfortable and encourage us to follow her creativity, yet we never felt like she was in the way.

We are so happy with the end result. Our most memorable moment was right after our first dance together (we danced to Common The Light). As the song was coming to a close, our bridal party joined us on the dance floor in a massive group hug slash dancing circle. Then it morphed into a surprise throwback performance of Talksic – a rap group my husband and his best friend were a part of in high school. It literally got every single person on the dance floor grooving to hip hop. #missionaccomplished.
