Not Your Typical Winter Wedding Inspiration

Winter brides, just wait until you feast your eyes on this inspiration shoot photographed by Allen Tsai. Set in the rolling hills of Texas, it’s a Southern take on a wintertime wedding with must-pin moments like the stationery by The Left Handed Calligrapher and a sleek white cake from HoneyLove Cakery. Pop to the gallery for even more moments, including the absolute sweetest horse-drawn carriage.

The classic equestrian styling of Ralph Lauren blended with the regal influences of the Downton Abbey countryside were the inspirations for this shoot. The rolling Texas hills and fall foliage of The Flying V Ranch provided the perfect canvas for this refined editorial. A dessert spread was curated on top of an antique letterpress cabinet, complete with an antique silver coffee service and a simple but stunning cake from Honey Love Cakery. Another striking vignette provides masculine whimsy with a cocktail bar set on top of an antique shop cabinet featuring a set of antique tobacco pipes for the gentlemen of the evening. The floral palette, by Blushington Blooms, incorporates warm, neutral tons of white and cream, with deep burgundy accents and greenery for a loose organic feel. Wintery bliss was accomplished with a full lace Berta gown, provided by The Bridal Boutique, and a stunning mink provided by David Hunt Furs. The passion between the real life, soon to be bride and groom is palpable. Perfected by Q The MUA and captured by Allen Tsai Photography, scenes of the couple in a masculine horse and carriage among the countryside and a serene canoe ride inspire the old romantic soul in all.

Merry Christmas from Style Me Pretty!

As Perry Vaile, the photographer behind this inspiration shoot said, “No matter how it’s celebrated, Christmastime is a reminder to slow down, be grateful, and cling tightly to the ones you love most in this special season.” And quite frankly, we couldn’t agree more. Along with the design + stylings of Emily Claire Events, she captured the sentiment of a Christmas getaway, and there’s more to see right here. From all of us at Style Me Pretty, wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday!

From Perry VaileWhile some celebrate with large gatherings or boisterous parties, there’s another equally special alternative – the Christmas Getaway. Whether it’s a quiet respite from a busy year, or a way to reconnect with someone special, taking the holidays as a private experience can turn a typical holiday into one for the record books.

Pack light, bring your winter clothes, and plan for a weekend snuggled up watching Christmas movies in bed with hot cocoa, going on the hunt for the perfect tree, and then warming up with a fresh pot pie straight out of the oven.

Make an evening out of decorating the tree, and stay up late as the candles melt down, reminiscing about the beauty and challenges that 2016 brought. No matter how it’s celebrated, Christmastime is a reminder to slow down, be grateful, and cling tightly to the ones you love most in this special season.

When You Meet “The One” on Christmas

I’ve been watching my fair share of Hallmark classics this holiday season, and quite frankly, Brett and Emily’s love story could put any movie storyline to shame. These two met at the hospital working the Christmas shift and soon knew they’d found something very special. Cassidy Carson photographed all the wedding details, including stationery by Designs in Paper, and the film by Matt G Video is an absolute must-watch.

From the Bride… Brett and I met on Christmas night, when we were both stuck working the overnight shift at the hospital. I was the nurse for a patient who was getting increasingly sick, and Brett was the Medicine Resident I called to come help. The patient ended up getting much better (he was able to celebrate his 65th wedding anniversary the next month), and Brett and I went on our first date shortly after. About a year and a half after that we were engaged, and ready to start planning our wedding!

Brett and I decided to get married in Nashville, where we both currently live. The first thing we chose was the venue; Mint Springs Farm. It was the perfect combination of elegant and cozy, with its giant Swarovski crystal chandeliers and beautiful barn. Plus they welcomed our King Charles Cavalier puppy Walter with open arms! The photographer was next, and one of the most important things to me. When I saw how perfectly Cassidy captured the emotion of a wedding day, I knew immediately she would do a great job of capturing all the small moments I would want to look back on for years to come.

I am very close to my younger brother, and there isn’t a designated place for a brother in a wedding. I ultimately decided on letting him do my speech, and chose not to have a maid of honor. It was much too difficult to choose between my friends anyway! I loved being able to hear about our relationship from his point of view, and it was one of my favorite parts of the day.

The day itself was gorgeous, we couldn’t have asked for better weather. It was so great to have all the people closest to us together in one place. Once the day finally arrived I was really able to let go and enjoy the time with my friends, family, and new husband. The perfect ending to a relationship started on a cold Christmas night.

From The Bride… Griffin and I first met at Villanova University in May, 2008. We were introduced by a mutual friend at a local college hangout, the Grog. We hit it off immediately and the rest is history.

The ceremony was held at St. Thomas of Villanova Church. Getting married at Villanova was extremely important to us because it was the place the originally brought us together. There are so many beautiful country clubs around the main line it was so difficult to choose, but after seeing Philadelphia Country Club’s gorgeous ballroom and classic Christmas decor, we were sold. It was a traditional, classic, Christmas wedding and we incorporated a gold pinecones into pretty much everything.

We were nervous that we chose December 5th because of the weather, however, we lucked out and it was a perfect 50-degree day with not a cloud in the sky. It was so nice I was worried my fur stole and the girls’ black watch pashminas wouldn’t be necessary.

Our colors were gold, green, ivory, and navy. We chose colors to compliment Christmas decor. The colors were also incorporated in the navy and green black watch plaid in our wedding party and our niece and Nephew’s attire.

My Mom is an incredible artist so when it came to the fun and creative details, we had a blast. We made gold pinecone Christmas ornaments and attached to the welcome bags, my Mom drew the map of events, decorated flip flops so that everyone could kick off their heels and dance and a close family friend stitched the Mr. & Mrs. stockings for our chairs. The place card table was its own winter wonderland with Christmas tree holders and pinecone accents.

I think it is safe to say the most memorial part for us would be the door opening into the church and seeing one another. A funny moment that we will never forget was my Uncle Pat ripped off his tux jacket and had on a custom shirt with our photo and “Just Married” on the back. Another funny moment was when my MOH tried to fix my veil before we left the church but ripped it out of my hair by accident.

A Cozy Christmas Proposal Sure To Inspire…

‘Tis the season for sweet love stories and proposals by sparkly trees. And this shoot captured by Jamie Mercurio is just that and more. Emily Elizabeth Events created this Christmas story before us, and with gingerbread houses, festive wreaths and an emerald ring that makes us gasp, it’s a scene sure to inspire. Get in the holiday spirit in our Vault gallery right this way!

From Emily of Emily Elizabeth EventsThe holidays are the most romantic time of year and also one of the most popular for proposals. This gave us the inspiration for a Christmas editorial set at Beech Hill Barn. Coming home from parties galore, our couple settles in at home to relax in front of the fire and eat some takeout food before he pops the question. The scene is cozy and festive and she enjoys some prosecco while he opts for a howler from a local microbrewery. Sweet treats include a gingerbread house, cookies, and Yule Log. The house is trimmed simply and we went for a vintage-modern aesthetic, classic with a twist. A Charlie Brown Christmas tree, wreaths, vintage ornaments, thoughtfully hand-wrapped gifts, and cards from family and friends complete the look and feel. The engagement ring is an estate piece with an emerald, adding some sparkle and shine to a momentous occasion – green against the red lace of her dress. Their French bulldog joins in on the fun and approves the marriage proposal, sealing the deal.

A Cozy Holiday Home Tour that’s Guaranteed to Get You in a Festive Mood

With Christmas just days away, we are getting ready for a ton of cozy, matching pajama filled relaxation. Just add hot cocoa to that mix and you have this holiday home tour of Shauna Dean of Quentin & Co . Her philosophy when decorating for Christmas was snow, stars and anything cozy. Yep, she nailed it. Head to the vault for even more snapped by Vicki Bartel that’s giving us all the holiday feels.

As I planned out my decor for Christmas this year, I kept finding myself inspired by a few recurring elements. Snow, stars, and anything cozy! Since my oldest boy is now 2, he’s beginning to feel the magic of the holiday season too. For that reason, I really wanted our decorations to appeal to him, and I also needed them to withstand his wild toddler ways!

I started with our flocked tree and incorporated lots of non breakable ornaments, like the large white yarn balls which are undeniably cozy, and a ton of sparkly silver ornaments to up the festive factor. One of my favorite parts of the tree was the different ribbons I used to fill it out. Extra wide burlap and silver ribbons cut into pieces and placed among the branches made a huge impact for a budget friendly price.

As a finishing touch, I used a silk silver ribbon to add bows to any spots that seemed to be lacking in ornaments. In keeping with my kid friendly mission, I added touches of whimsy, like the large wooden stars at the fireplace and the Christmas tree advent calendar that hangs above them. I also dressed up the kids’ table in our living room with a flocked tree and hung giant snowflakes above it.

Decorating for Christmas with little ones in the picture really gave me the guts to go all out with the magical touches. I hung extra garlands, and incorporated all the twinkly lights and glitter I could get my hands on. Since our living area and adjoining kitchen are primarily cool tones, I knew I needed to significantly up the warmth factor if I was going to achieve the cozy feel I was after.

I added a large vintage wooden crate, and filled it with a plush fur blanket, our “joy” pillow, Cohen’s stuffed moose, and all of the leftover wrapping paper and ribbon. I also brought in warm woods in the form of several cake stands that are perfect for holding all the extra treats we have around this time of the year!

When it came to the kitchen, I added seasonal touches like a lavender tree, and pulled out goodies like hot chocolate, marshmallows, and chestnuts to display in jars on our island. A plaid table cloth and a twinkly star garland added another layer of cozy to our dining nook, making it the perfect spot for cookie decorating (and eating!).

I am so happy with how our decked out kitchen and living room were transformed for the season, and I can’t wait to start creating Christmas memories in this magical and cozy space.

6 Proposal Tips from a Real Groom

Proposal season is upon us, so if you think an engagement is in your near future…consider not-so-subtly forwarding this article to your man. It’s an epic Jardin des Tuileries proposal with tips from Ryan, the most romantic groom-to-be you’ll ever meet. He surprised his love, Marianne of The M.A. Times with a moment she’ll always remember and we’re thrilled to officially kick off this wedding journey with them.

6 Proposal Tips from a Real Groom

Know where she wants to go or places that she loves

Marianne obsesses over Paris. Her books and decor screamed Francophile! I started planning a long time before to make sure that I could bring her here for the first time. Trips are expensive, so plan far enough in advance and that way you can pivot or adjust if anything comes up. It’s important to make the occasion one to remember…you can only propose to her once!

Talk to her family

I spoke with her Dad and got his permission several months before. Though Marianne and I knew that we wanted to be together and this is more of a gesture, I’d still recommend this step not only to show respect but because they can offer very useful advice and provide extra hands in planning the proposal. After I proposed to Marianne in Paris, we were having lunch and I handed her hand-written letters from our parents and that evening we had a planned Skype call to celebrate with family. The proposal should be special and you want to make it memorable not just for her but for those close to her too.

Know the style of ring she wants

Girls want you to know what jewelry they want, you just have to listen and pay attention. Some girls don’t want a diamond, some girls like silver, platinum and white gold over yellow or rose gold. Some girls want a simple ring, other want one that is more detailed. I knew she wanted something that was vintage inspired. That’s how I landed on Heidi Gibson’s site. Amazing hand-made Art Deco rings that any girl would die for. Don’t just go out and buy a ring (she’ll love it either way), make sure the ring speaks to her personality and personal style because she will be wearing this FOREVER.

Commission the help of others

Our friend Tyrone lives in France and helped me scout out the perfect place to propose to Marianne in Paris. I had no idea what the place would look like since I’d never been there, let alone whether the leaves would still be on the trees. Tyrone checked it out beforehand to make sure. For Marianne’s ring, I wanted to choose the center stone locally so I spoke with my friend Tessa who works in a jewelry shop and she set aside the best oval stones she could find. After choosing the stone, Heidi shipped me the finished ring and I had it set here in Raleigh. People are always willing to help as long as you ask!

Do NOT be predictable

I knew the key to surprising her was getting someone involved that she wouldn’t expect. I worked with Anthropologie and our local Anthropologie in Durham, NC to concoct a story to get Marianne to show up at the designated location at the right time. She thought she was showing up for a photo shoot. I looped in the photographer that I hired (Tala Nicole) and Tala emailed Marianne the same details that were planned with Anthropologie to close the loop.

Listen to her (the perfect proposal is in the details)

I didn’t just buy a ring and propose in Paris. I knew she didn’t want a hotel so I chose a HomeAway apartment in Le Marais. I knew the style of ring she would want, and the garden we got engaged was one she had talked about numerous times (Jardin des Tuileries). She was wearing a dress that I got for her that she had previously mentioned she loved from Anthropologie. Marianne read the letters from our parents at a restaurant I knew she wanted to go to (Carette). Upon returning to our apartment, there was a bottle of her favorite champagne (Veuve Clicquot) and a framed photo of us on the table (done with help of the property management company). We ended the night with a planned Skype video chat with her sister and sister’s husband, and parents. The day doesn’t have to be elaborate, but make sure that you listen to her and do things that show her that you listen. A girl that wants to marry you will drop all of the clues you need to pull off the perfect proposal, so absolutely take the things she says to heart.

About the proposal from Ryan… Since I had met Marianne in 2012, she had always dreamed of Paris. Everything in her apartment was French-inspired, and even her coffee table books were about Paris. I come from a camp that believes life is too short to wish and dream, and that you should always aspire to make dreams come true. I knew Paris was the perfect place for us to start our love story, so I cashed in my credit card miles to buy two tickets.

A self-confessed Francophile, Marianne already knew ALL the places she wanted to go in Paris, but I wanted to choose a surprise location for the proposal. The Pavilion de Marsan in the Tuileries Garden at the Louvre Palace was a place I had seen online when planning our trip and I loved the way it looked. As a photographer, I always capture surroundings that interest or inspire me. It was important to me to have this moment captured too, so I began researching photographers in Paris. Standards held high, I was thrilled when I came across Tala Nicole Photography. I sent her pictures of Marianne, introducing myself and my plan, and she responded almost immediately, saying she would LOVE to shoot my proposal. I also arranged with Tala to shoot our engagement photos following the proposal at several of Marianne’s favorite spots in Paris.

I told Marianne that I would take care of our accommodations and I wanted it to be a surprise. I knew she wanted to be in Le Marais, and had dreamed of lavish details like hardwood floors and a balcony with a view. I had booked several beach houses and cabins through HomeAway in the past, and I knew I wanted to stay in something like that…a home away from home, but I wasn’t sure if they offered properties overseas. Luckily it turned out HomeAway had several thousand properties to choose from in Paris; which eased my hunt for the perfect property. I was able to narrow down properties in Paris by the location, the number of bedrooms, number of guests, etc. After sorting through hundreds of options, I found a property in Le Marias that was that not only 2 minutes walk to the Metro stop, but also had a wrap-around corner balcony with the most amazing view. Without hesitation, I booked.

Getting Marianne to Paris was easy (I mean, who wouldn’t jump on a plane if handed a ticket?), but how was I supposed to make sure she showed up to a given location and not get suspicious of a photographer on the grounds? Marianne partners with our local Anthropologie at The Streets at Southpoint, and after she helped host a fashion show with them, I got the idea to use Anthropologie as a way to get her to show up. With the help of Ashley and Carey at the SouthPoint Anthropologie and Kelly at the corporate office, we began crafting a master plan. I had Carey text Marianne to say that home office reached out and wanted to shoot with some of their blogger partners who had upcoming travel plans, and Marianne (as I suspected) replied that she’d love to do a shoot in Paris. Anthropologie told Marianne if she would be in Paris with a male friend to have him wear a suit, as he may be needed for some of the shots. I feigned reluctance to the idea, but eventually “caved.” To top it off, I worked with Carey to make sure Marianne had her dream Anthropologie dress to wear that day. Every little detail was coming together.

Finally, on Wednesday, November 2nd at 7:30 AM CEST, the time was finally here! We headed over to the Tuileries Garden to meet Tala and started shooting; just Marianne at first and then Tala told me to step in. While we were shooting, I turned to Marianne and started saying sweet things to her, but she tried to ignore me because she thought she needed to remain professional for the shoot. She seriously had no idea. I got her attention though and turned her toward me, grabbing both of her hands. In that moment she realized what was happening, and couldn’t hold back tears. The next little bit was a blur, and the only thing I can remember clearly after I asked and she said ‘YES,’ was that, in all my excitement, I couldn’t figure out which finger the ring went on! After soaking in our engagement at the Tuileries, we continued our journey around Marianne’s favorite places in Paris: the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Pont Alexandre III, Palais Royal and then the Trocadero view of the Eiffel Tower. This wasn’t just important to me so that we would have photos together but each spot and each photo helped to capture the feeling of that day.

The day wasn’t over after parting with Tala. I had both of our parents write letters to Marianne which were tucked in my jacket pocket. When we arrived at Carette for a late breakfast, I gave Marianne the letters from our parents – cue the waterworks again! We savored our tea and pastries and then headed back to the HomeAway. While we were out, I had our property manager set up a framed photo of us and a bottle of champagne so we could come back and celebrate our engagement. I’d also coordinated with Marianne’s family beforehand a time to do a Skype call so that they could be a part of the excitement. It was the perfect ending to the most perfect day. And that’s how Marianne Verrilli made my dreams come true and became my fiancé.

But don’t be mistaken; you don’t need to jet off in a giant balloon to score major points. Going classic – especially classic Cali – is never a bad idea. Timeless style plus natural beauty; it’s a guaranteed gorgeous moment in the making.
[dotted]

If ever in doubt, go with a jaw-dropping, stunning (red!) dress and everything will be perfectly on point.
[dotted]

Got the stylish dress already and still looking for a bit of extra “oomph”? Paris does the trick. Always.
[dotted]

But then again, roaming the romantic streets of Italy, while still super stylishly decked out, is pretty fantastic as well.
[dotted]

While we’ll always love the couples that GO BIG, we’re also believers in GOING SMALL aka e-shoots in the comfort of your own home, where you and your soon-to-be can truly be yourselves and your photographer can capture that authenticity mixed with sweetness and tenderness galore.
[dotted]

Or simply step into your own backyard (or just down the street a bit). With the natural beauty all around – and may we say some boho chic styling that we’re totally loving – capture you and your fiance just simply being together.
[dotted]

If looking to add a little extra personal touch to your session, may we recommend (aka encourage) including man’s best friend.
[dotted]

Adding in a lady’s best friend – aka beautiful blooms – isn’t too shabby either.
[dotted]

But what truly stands out, what grabs ahold of our SMP heart strings is when the love and the smiles are so real that you can’t help but fall head over heels and remember the adorable couple months and months later. Happy Engagement Planning all!

Romantically Roaming The Italian Streets…

Everything has a way of working out… just sometimes on its own time schedule. But fate proved its point for this sweet couple by bringing them to Italy, a destination that they had only dreamed off. And while there, Rebecca Yale was able to capture anniversary pics to guarantee that these memories are never forgotten. Pretty amazing, right? If these pics don’t make you want to book a trip ASAP, it’s time to have your pulse checked dear friends – see them all right this way!

From Rebecca YaleI had the pleasure of photographing Lotta and her husband Marcos’ first year anniversary photos around the charming cobblestone streets of Ravello, Italy. Lotta and I were in town working on a wedding together and fell in love with the beautiful town on the Amalfi coast known for its ceramics and limoncello and knew it would be the perfect spot for an anniversary session with her husband. We spent a beautiful fall morning exploring the 9th Century pedestrian-only town set into the mountains above the Amalfi Coast.

From Lotta of Mint DesignFate is a funny thing. Since the time we got engaged, Marcos and I were set on going to Italy for our honeymoon. Both so in love with everything Italian – the views, the culture, the history, the food, the wine, the endless possibilities of exploring. Italy was our ideal place. As life has it, we were thrown an unbelievable curveball and just shy of our one year wedding anniversary, we found the home of our dreams. But, what comes along with the home of your dreams, are financial obstacles. First thing to go was our dream honeymoon in Italy. Although we were sad, we were extremely grateful for this new chapter in our lives.

Fast forward a few months, we were finally settled in our new home and I was in the midst of planning and designing three big fall weddings. One day I received a text message from my dear friend Rebecca Yale. We had met via Instagram and had collaborated on a photoshoot a few years back. Rebecca’s text came completely out of the blue. “Hey what are you doing the week of October 17th?” I wrote her back and we quickly decided to chat on the phone. Rebecca had recruited me to floral design a rehearsal dinner and wedding in Ravello, Italy. Mind blown. After many details were mulled over, I found myself booking flights for my husband and I to Italy. A dream come true. To work and enjoy Italy for a business trip was something I never imagined would happen. Truly such a blessing.

Fast forward to the days right before the trip to Italy, Rebecca and I texted and texted and texted some more. We threw out the idea of an impromptu anniversary session while we were already in the most romantic place on earth. The morning of the rehearsal dinner, we put on our outfits we had brought with us all the way from California – hubby looked quite dapper! I, however, was excited and nervous and stressed about timing and the rehearsal dinner florals. But once Rebecca had us in front of the camera, all the nerves went away and we were able to just be us. Ravello will always have a very special place in our hearts.

A Magical Holiday Home Tour with a Strong Mantel Game

Home tours make me all sorts of happy. But holiday home tours? Make my inner Buddy the Elf come to life. And this one captured so beautifully by Ruth Eileen has my merry turned up on high. Designed by owner, Jackie of Finding Lovely, I keep bouncing from room to room soaking up all the Christmasy goodness. From the wreath trio above that gorg mantel to the decked out playroom, find the full tour in The Vault!

From Jackie of Finding LovelyThe holiday season is always a special time of year for us, with its mixture of nostalgia and sparkle. Then you add babies into the mix and it becomes downright magical, a true pursuit of lovely both in decor and experiences. We remodeled our historic home’s downstairs this last year so this was really the first Christmas getting decorate the space. With floor to ceiling windows and white built ins, it dresses up well for the holidays.

Our home is neutral with pops of aquas and blues but come Christmas time, there is something classically lovely about notes of red. A spool of cranberry silk ribbon casually set on the mantel in passing inspired the whole palate—the interaction between the sea glass aqua and the rich cranberry red was lovely. Sometimes inspiration strikes in the simplest of ways.

Decorating began with the mantel, and I knew I wanted a wreath trio, I just didn’t have wreaths. So I asked a sweet friend, Victoria Riepma from Something Felt, to make the felt flower wreath. It was stunning and inspired the gold metal flower wreath purchase from Wayfair. The small ribbon wreath was a true DIY, just ribbon folds, a foam circle and hot glue. The arrangement of wreaths works well because it highlights various textures and sizes and pulls in the inspiration colors. The faux cedar garland is from Terrain. It is interspersed with fresh pine and eucalyptus branches which have dried nicely. The stockings are from Crate and Barrel purchased a couple years ago and marked with glitter letters from Pottery Barn. Snowy houses, bottle brush and sparkly trees collected over the years are interspersed with a new gold Anthropologie candelabra to grace the mantel. The bookcases play on symmetry with matching DIY cloche bell jars from Home Decorators (filled with zinc house ornaments and faux snow from Terrain), a snowy photograph from Minted’s Art Collection, Target finds and glittery ornaments sprinkled throughout.

In the window, the live center tree is decorated in aqua and gold and sparkling with a crystal garland from Ballard Design. The two matching faux noble firs, from Home Decorators Collection, are decorated in burgundy balls, the smaller ornaments wired together in a cluster for greater impact. They weren’t quite tall enough so I set them on bowls, used a linen blanket found at Home Goods that I cut in half as tree skirts.

Given the bolder colors in the family room, I wanted to keep the adjacent dining room soft and neutral. The centerpiece is a cloche from Pottery Barn bought last year on sale and bottle brush trees collected on a recent trip to California. The mini glitter flower wreaths on the back of the chairs are from Magnolia Market and pinned in place. Sometimes the loveliest place settings are simple and sparkly with enough natural textures to ground the design.

The playroom is where our babies (and us!) spend a good portion of the day. It’s whimsical and bright and come Christmas time brimming with cheer. I changed out the dish towel and added candy cane striped bowls from Crate and Barrel to the IKEA play kitchen, Christmas and winter books to the bookshelves, a kid-friendly live tree with a DIY Pom Pom garland and felt snowflakes from Pottery Barn kids. The felt Christmas light garland from Land of Nod was a favorite touch. In simple and inexpensive ways, Christmas cheer can be added to even the most used spaces. Merry Christmas!

The Coziest Christmas Wedding at Home

There’s something absolutely magical about Christmas in New England. Just look at Abby and Aidan’s wedding planned by 42 North with festive blooms by Foret Design Studio. They married at home, in Abby’s parents’ barn, and HENRY + MAC photographed the images they’ll cherish forever.

From the Bride… To be honest, planning our wedding was easier than I thought it would be (I know, not what everyone in the midst of planning wants to hear). The reason it was easy is that we focused on what was most important to us and then hired a wonderful team of vendors (most of whom were friends as well) that made it all happen. Aidan and I decided quite quickly after getting engaged that we wanted a small wedding that felt more like a wonderful, intimate dinner party than a big, lavish wedding. We wanted our wedding to be an evening that gathered our closest friends and family and gave us the opportunity to thank them for loving and supporting us. We hoped our wedding would feel very personal so getting married at my parents’ home seemed like a natural choice. Getting married at home, coupled without desire for a short engagement, meant that we would be getting married in my parents’ barn in December, right before Christmas.

Our first call after deciding on the when and where was to our photographer, Dana. I’m not exaggerating when I say we would have changed our wedding date had Dana not been available. When you get married you literally spend all day about three feet away from your photographer. You will spend more time with this person than with your spouse that day. Dana has a wonderful energy and enthusiasm that is contagious. On top of that she is wildly talented. She is so talented that we now collaborate on all of the photography for my company.

Our next priority after photography was food and beverage. After years of working in food related businesses (including my own) I had made friends with a wonderful crew of talented chefs, bartenders and purveyors. Ben Elliott from Saltbox Farm was a natural fit for us since his food is incredible, he sources from his own farm whenever possible and he has done many events at my parents’ home over the years. Given that we were putting such a focus on the food we didn’t want the wine and cocktails to feel like an afterthought, as they do at so many weddings. Our friends TJ and Hadley Douglas from The Urban Grape helped us select all of the wines (and were guests at the wedding) and Andrew Fatato of Flask & Funnel created a perfect cocktail menu for us.

We actually hired our wonderful planners Francie and Britt from 42 North after we had already selected a number of our vendors when I realized (admittedly a little late in the game) that given that I own a retail business I was getting married smack dab in the middle of our busiest season and would have no time to manage all of the details, vendors, schedules, etc. necessary to pull off a wedding at home. After Francie and Britt came on board we never had to worry about another detail. It was like magic!

My mother is a master gardener by trade so flowers were obviously going to play an important role as well. The ladies of Foret Design took on a herculean task of taking my limited direction of “I want it to feel holiday adjacent” and my mother’s extensive collection of rare antique tussie mussie holders and creating a cohesive floral design. They did a brilliant job.

The only part of wedding planning that did cause any stress was wedding dress shopping. I went to three bridal salons in Boston and it would not be an understatement to say that I hated it. I had seen most of the dresses online before, none of them felt special or interesting, I didn’t see a single one that was close to what I was looking for and I found the high-pressure sales tactics distasteful. Thank goodness I found Daniel Faucher. Daniel has been making couture wedding dresses and special occasion dresses in Boston for years. He is a genius and every time we met to sketch, select lace or have a fitting was an absolute delight. Having a dress that has been especially designed for you and literally built for your body is a rare treat but if it is within your budget and you can find the right person to work with I think it is so worthwhile.

If I can give brides three pieces of wedding planning advice it would be the following: 1) Think long and hard about how you want your wedding to feel for your guests. So many decisions will come from that. 2) Work with local vendors and small shops who’s owners you know whenever possible. You will be supporting businesses in your backyard, the service will be far superior and it will be much easier to meet, coordinate and make changes. 3) Sneak off for a minute with your spouse after you get married. My husband and I snuck into the main house right after the ceremony, ate chicken nuggets off my nieces and nephews plates in the kitchen and had a glass of wine. It might have been our favorite memory of the night.

This Georgia Vineyard Wedding Looks Straight Out of Tuscany!

When you look through the images by Amy Arrington, it’s hard to believe this wedding didn’t actually take place in Italy. The sweeping vineyard views set the scene for Sam and Michael’s incredible day and you’ll fall hard when you dive into the gallery and film below by Before Your Eyes Cinema.

From the Bride… When Mike and I sat down to discuss our wedding, we both knew that we did not want the standard affair. We love to travel and one of our first big trips together was to Italy and wine country. When we started to discuss venues, our thoughts immediately returned to those memories of rolling hills, grape vines, and Tuscany. The venue was therefore set, a winery, but how would we transport Italy to North Georgia? Enter Montaluce Winery, the first and only venue that we visited. It was an Italian oasis set among the mountains of North Georgia, and after our fist visit, when the vineyard was coated in a light dusting of snow, we knew we had found the perfect place to get married. With the venue locked in, the rest of our preparations began to fall into place.

While he was initially hesitant, I was able to talk my husband into a first look. The pictures and memories of us looking at each other, secluded between the high vines of the grapes is a moment we will both hold onto forever. Those few moments of solitude, to be with each other outside of the events of the day, reminded us of what all the planning and preparation was for; a celebration of our love. The timing of the first look and the perfection of the autumn light allowed us to capture some of the most beautiful and unique photos of the day, and freed us up after the ceremony to enjoy time with our friends and loved ones who had come to celebrate with us.

Our ceremony was also unique to our situation. As we both worked at the Children’s Hospital, we are fortunate to call one of the Chaplains a dear friend . Mike and I are both people of faith and having a friend who is also a Chaplain allowed us to have an intimate, personal ceremony that was a reflection of our personalities and our love. Reverend Rachel was able to create a ceremony that was not only spiritual, and honored our families, but reflected the best of us as individuals, and as a couple.

While our big day was a collaboration, and my husband and I agreed on most aspects of the wedding, there was one issue on which he would not budge, a live band. This turned out to be one of our best decisions. The sound of live music from the Emerald Empire Band filling the venue, accompanied by their energy invigorated the dance floor and led to some of the more memorable moments of the night. We will forever remember standing arm in arm with family and friends singing the chorus to ‘Sweet Caroline” at the top of our lungs. The sounds of the band and looks on everyone’s faces are the enduring legacy of the beauty and love that made our wedding day so special.

From the Bride… I had so many parts of the day that I loved, but a few favorites included putting my dress on and showing it to family and the girls for the first time, walking down the aisle to see Colin for the first time, and how incredible I felt during my bridal portraits. It was the best day! For me, so much of my style inspiration was centered around the venue. I wanted the design to be elegant but to also have a rustic & whimsical feel. My bouquet was incredible and incorporated my love of succulents in a way that still tied into the fall season. I wanted it to feel casual and for people to feel comfortable, while still having jaw dropping details. Lots of greenery in the reception added to the whimsical feel, as well as the trailing ribbons in our bouquets.

The Wedding Every Fairytale Should Copy

Remember when you used to dress up in toilet paper wedding dresses and pretend to marry your next door neighbor who was covered in mud from catching frogs? Oh, was that just me? Sorry. Well, whatever your fairytale used to be, I’m pretty sure that this wedding will surpass all of your dreams of I do and With this Ring. Photographed by Natalie Bray, this gorgeous bride and groomed manage to make classic look spectacular. Click here for even more!

From Natalie Bray…Set among a beautiful canopy of trees, twinkle lights, and love. Terry and Kristina celebrated together surrounded by close family and friends. It was a beautiful Summer day and The colors of white, green, and touches of blush danced throughout the details perfectly. Not over the top, but refined. Terry and Kristina wanted to say their own vows, which was a very special part of the day as they stepped under the Ceremony Arch that was handmade by the brides father and decorated beautifully by Casi Cielo. The ceremony was luminous as they said “I do!”. And the kiss… Lined with candles and the glow of twinkle lights… Be still my heart. Hartley Botanica is a lush and secluded venue creating the most romantic experience with it’s florals and gardens complete with a tree swing. Such a heartfelt and elegant celebration. I am incredibly honored to have been a part. Congratulations again!

From the bride…I would have to say that my favorite parts of the wedding day were the personalized vows and the dancing! I wasn’t sure about sharing our vows in front of everyone at first but it ended up being so special and meant more to me than I ever would have imagined! It was wonderful to share our love with everyone in that moment.

And then of course the dancing was so fun! The day is crazy… running here and there so being able to dance with Terry and let loose with my friends and family is what really made the day what it should have been about … LOVE AND FUN! My advice to brides would be just that… to do what everyone always tells brides to do and that is to enjoy the day! I kept telling my self over and over that I was going to relax and take it all in but it is so so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of things and have little stress out moments.

Even though there were very minor bumps in the road that day when I look back none of that matters. I can only remember how absolutely amazing it was so I would say to focus on that! Oh and when picking out shoes … go for comfort not for looks. Well, maybe have 2 pairs: 1 for photos and the other one for everything else!

An Intimate Chapel Ceremony To Remind Us Why We Love Weddings

This feature was a bit of a struggle. Plain and simple, there were too many beautiful photos to include in one post – so more than ever, I encourage you to head to our Vault gallery and see every single stunning snap by Michael and Carina – you will not be disappointed. From the quiet insides of this classic chapel to the blush and burgundy bouquets (thanks to Hedge Fine Blooms), it’s a classic, romantic wedding that I’m loving more and more with every minute. Join me in this beautiful bliss right this way!

From the Bride… After long conversations during chilly walks around DC, homemade gnocchi, and more hearty laughs than I’d had in years, I knew Steve was the thoughtful, smart and witty man I’d one day call my husband. As it turned out, he’d made up his mind on day one. The evening we met, he told friends, “See that girl in the silver dress? I’m going to marry her.” Three years later I wore that same dress to our rehearsal dinner at The Brookville, in Charlottesville, VA.

Our hope for our wedding was the relaxed elegance and easy joy of a close-knit dinner party. We decided on a few key factors: a single venue for the whole day, wine, and a small list of family and friends-who-are-family.We fell head over heels with Charlottesville, VA – the leisurely pace, peaceful Blue Ridge Mountains, and the fact it was driving distance for my family in Kentucky and Ohio, Steve’s New England family, and all our friends from Washington, DC. When we stepped into the quaint, 50-year-old historic chapel at Trump Winery, my heart skipped a beat, and Steve squeezed my hand. It was a moment you can’t manufacture: sunbeams filtered through the windows and lit up the pastel colors on the ceiling’s painted mural. The classic red brick exterior and white steeple reminded Steve of growing up in Massachusetts. It was perfect for our ceremony, and because the chapel only seated 75 (our exact number of guests), we knew it would feel beautifully full. We were so struck by its charm we commissioned an artist friend, Nikki Smetters, to make a watercolor insert for our invitations and programs.

We chose a timeless, neutral palette with just a touch of Old World charm. We drew inspiration from Italy (Steve’s family heritage, and our honeymoon destination), antique books that we collected throughout our engagement (with our favorite author’s names as table numbers), and a special detail from my mother’s family’s Youngstown, Ohio roots: the cookie table, a labor of love with humble origins in which women (and men!) bake up a storm for weeks before the wedding. It was amazing, and people loved making up gift bags of cookies as favors.

I will remember the whole achingly beautiful day forever: watching my best friends lovingly do each other’s makeup, my grandmother peeking in the dressing area door, ready to be “one of the girls”, and of course, our first look. I saw Steve standing in the vineyard, and my heart had never felt so full. It definitely didn’t hurt he looked so handsome! Soft bouquets by Hedge Fine Blooms in blush, red wine, ivory, gold, and sage also had me swooning, I felt like I was holding an Italian meadow in my hands.

Our guests were greeted on the chapel patio with cold local cider and upbeat music like “Goin to the Chapel” and “L-O-V-E” by Nat King Cole. We purposefully kept the chapel doors closed so our guests could chat with each other and linger, looking out over the grapevines and rolling hills. I remember laughing out loud, while peeking through the window of the car with my bridesmaids, as people danced to the music when the chapel doors opened. My sister walked my mom down the aisle, my father wrapped Steve in a hug, and then I married the best man I’ve ever known.

It took a village: from the al fresco cocktail hour to the family-style dinner, Cristelle and her C&O Catering team made feeding decadent, delicious food to 75 people look effortless, and everyone was so friendly our guests raved about the people almost as much as the incredible food! C&O truly captured a little essence of each of our elements in our menu: from butternut-squash ravioli with Italian sage, to Southern ham on Virginia cheddar scones… let’s just say I was not a bride who forgot to eat! Our wonderful DJ’s, Chris and Rialand with Younique Moments, surprised us by serenading everyone with “Be Our Guest” as dinner was brought to the tables. Our dear friends, Michael and MaryAlice Viljoen, did AV and day-of coordination, and were a force to be reckoned with. Patrick, the coordinator at Trump Winery, was one of the most gracious people we met throughout the planning process, and Michael and Carina, our photographers, practically became family in their quiet, intentional ways… Carina even bustled my gown when no one else could! When we think of it all now we think of joy on joy on joy, and I know we always will.
