Stroll Through Paris’s Iconic Sites With This Classic E-Session

I had the pleasure of visiting Paris for the first time last month and immediately fell in love with the city – and this engagement session captured by the talented Amanda Wei Photo is taking me right back to the romance of those cobblestone streets. The gorgeous Bride-to-be absolutely glowed, with thanks to Harold James, as she walked hand-in-hand with her love around some of Paris’s most beautiful and iconic sites. From the Eiffel Tower to a majestic chateau, there’s so many pretty moments to see in this gallery!

From Amanda Wei PhotoThe world is far from lying when they say that Paris is one of the most romantic places in the world. Even with the gritty street art, gloomy weather, and cigarette smoke every where you turn, the cobble stone streets, petite cafe store fronts, and never-ending, jaw-dropping architecture of Paris will sweep you off your feet.

Our clients, Jessie and Shuning who are getting married at Auberge du Soleil next April, decided to have a destination engagement session in Paris, and we couldn’t be more thrilled about it! We split their session into two days to get the most out of France that we possibly could. On day one, we wandered through Paris, starting at the world famous Eiffel Tower. We began just before sunrise to beat the crowds and to capture the beautiful soft pink light, and man, was it worth it! We carried on and went to the Pont Alexandre III, which is a stunning bridge crossing over the Seine that is elegantly decorated with gold statues and old black street lamps. Continuing on our stroll through Paris, we stopped by the Louvre Museum, wandered through Les Deux Plateaux with its fun black and white pillars, passed by Notre Dame, and found ourselves wandering through tiny side streets loaded with shops, cafes, and gift stores.

Just in the nick of time before the rain overtook Paris, we ended our first session at one of our favorite locations on the side of the Seine. People were scattered along the river that runs through Paris like the vain of romance every day, just enjoying each others company, some with a bottle of wine, a baguette, or a bit of cheese. It was amazing to see how this simple place surrounded by such beauty could be the source of encouragement for so much love, chivalry, and romance.

After a stunning countryside drive about an hour south of Paris, we arrived at this magnificent chateau for day two of our session! The view of the front entrance was so incredibly breathtaking, we were all so thrilled about the day that was ahead of us, and it was only just the beginning. We spent a good couple of hours strolling through the chateau with our jaws dropped, pit-stopping every now and then along the way to shoot. Each room had its own unique style and elegance, which created the perfect setting for a unique engagement session! After covering all of the locations possible inside, it was time to head out to the garden. (It was also time to get a golf cart!) The Chateau de Vaux le Vicomte was so incredibly massive, majestic, romantic, and well-manicured! We kept day-dreaming about attending parties that were hosted there way back when… Could you imagine?! It was such a beautiful day casually strolling through the chateau that we pretended was our very own private palace, photographing such an incredibly sweet, fun and loving couple, Jessie and Shuning.

Thank you again for taking us on such an amazing adventure! We absolutely love destination shoots and can’t wait for the next one! Paris, you stole our hearts.

A Blush Colored Ode to Classic Southern Beauty

Consider this inspiration designed and styled by Bellafare an ode to classic Southern beauty. The charming grounds of Magnolia Plantation set the scene for a garden affair awash in blush colored florals by Forage & Fleur and beautiful stationery by Lazywood Lane. All in all it makes for a shoot as romantic as they come and the peacock certainly doesn’t hurt either. Get inspired to craft your own Southern affair through the stunning images captured by Simply Sarah.

From Kristin with Bellfare…This old-world garden inspired shoot highlighted the iconic Southern landscape of live oaks and spanish moss found throughout beautiful Magnolia Plantation. The glossed blush china, gold flatware, and lace inspired linen, added a soft feminine touch to the tablescape. With loose, organic botanicals woven throughout the paperie and bride’s gown, the garden theme was thread throughout every detail. To top it all off, the all-white peacocks that call Magnolia Plantation home added an element of surprise that even coordinated with the overall design.

4 Tips For a Well Thought Out Wedding Registry

In theory, creating a wedding registry is a fun and easy breezy day trip to the store. But, if you’re as clueless as me (who knew you needed to register for more than four place settings in a household of two?) it helps to have an insider to walk you through the process. Enter the wedding experts.

Ether & Smith

As planners and etiquette experts, they often act as a stand-in friend and confidante to hundreds of brides who are unsure of how to navigate different aspects of the bridal experience. Here are their tips for navigating it all like a pro.

Quantity is important
Remember when I mentioned needing to register for more than four place settings? Candice Coppola, owner of Jubilee Events, explains why: “Your wedding china, flatware and glassware will hold sentimental value and meaning for a lifetime. Plates break, they get loaned and never returned or patterns become discontinued. This may be the only time you receive the patterns you’ve selected. Make sure you have enough. It comes in handy when you host a big dinner party like your first Thanksgiving.”

For that reason, she encourages clients to register for dinner service for at least 12, but 16 is ideal.

Streamline your registry.
“These days, our clients are all about expressing their personal style in their homes,” says Shannon Leahy Rosenbaum of Shannon Leahy Events. “They find that many of the big box registries are a little too “one size fits all” for their tastes.” As a result, Shannon says many couples are hitting Pinterest for ideas and registering via third-party sites like Zola, My Registry, and Blueprint.

The upside of these vendors is that they pull from multiple vendors, but sort everything in one portal, making it an easy, one-stop shop for guests to purchase gifts from. Eliminating the nuisance of visiting multiple sites and having to submit billing information more than once.

Keep in mind some things may be out of stock if you immediately register but your wedding isn’t for more than six months, says Amy Spears, owner of Socials in the South event planning. Be sure to visit and update your registry regularly to avoid out-of-season items, particularly if you have a long engagement.

Ruth Eileen Photography

Pick items that are pretty and practical.
Modern couples are saying hello to everyday fine china. “Heath Ceramics creates high-quality ceramics I love,” says Shannon. “Their table settings feel high-end and timeless enough that they can still be special family heirlooms.” For a fancy dinner party, she recommends dressing them up with festive linens, placemats and silverware. However, they are versatile and durable enough to be used daily (aka, they’re dishwasher safe!).

Ruth Eileen Photography

Register for experiences.
Etiquette experts agree that it’s more than ok for couples to register for date night ideas. Since many people are getting married later in life, it’s possible they already live together and have already furnished a home. If you fall in that category, use a registry like Honeyfund to register for activities to do your honeymoon.

“There are plenty of sites that offer options for guests to gift couples with everything from rafting trips to car rentals,” says Amy. Not going on your honeymoon immediately after the wedding and still prefer an activity versus a product? Use a site like Zola to register for a cooking class in your city.

Throwing the Perfect Al Fresco Wedding From the Comfort of Home

This Bride and Groom didn’t have to travel farther than their own backyard for a dream wedding venue. With gorgeous mountain views and a newly landscaped garden, their Fallbrook home played host to a romantic al fresco celebration inspired by the moonlight. From a wildly romantic floral arch crafted by Plenty of Petals to the prettiest garden details designed by To La Lune Events, get inspired to throw your wedding from the comfort of home courtesy of stunning photographs by Carmen Santorelli.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/225614204 600 338]

From the Bride…David and I knew that we wanted the beautiful mountain views from our Fallbrook home to serve as the backdrop for our wedding day. The only issue was that our backyard was not landscaped or properly graded for our dream Al Fresco wedding. So, we immediately began a full-scale backyard project that included an infinity pool, extensive grading, landscaping, and hardscape. This put us in the unique position of designing an outdoor living space to enjoy for years to come while also creating the stage for our big day. Lucky for us, our visionary and daring wedding coordinator (Christy from To La Lune) was on board and the rest of the vendors that made for a design dream team followed suit. The overall style we were going for was old world elegance with a contemporary twist and we drew inspiration from the mountains that surround us as well as the moon that shines above them. Our color palette consisted of a variety of creams and soft greys accompanied by moody tones of deep indigo and dark grey along with pops of blush and golden yellow hues. From the impeccable table settings, to the floral lined aisle, to the custom hand painted guest favors, to the modern acrylic pieces, and the romantic hand calligraphy, we loved how every thoughtful detail came together. The design truly was a labor of love and collaboration that beautifully reflected our personal style. And all of the above was made that much more intimate because we were able to share it with our closest loved ones in the comfort of our own home.

The Kind of Destination Wedding You Want to Be a Guest At

An invitation arrives on your doorstep for a wedding in Greece—what do you do? RSVP, hell yes! Especially when it’s a stunner like this one planned by White Ribbon Boutique Events. From the Bride’s elegant dress to the breezy al fresco reception, Anna Roussos snapped up every bit, which will have you adding this destination to your bucket list.

From the Bride… We knew when we decided to get married in Greece that we wanted to do something different and a little off the beaten path. Our desire was to show our guests a different side to Greece and the island of Spetses was just the place. The Poseidonion Grand Hotel is not only a landmark of the island, but the most elegant destination. It offered a touch of old-school glam against beautiful blue sea views, lavender blossoms in the garden, a grand staircase (perfect for our first look!) and the glass-tiled pool. As for our ceremony and reception, we really wanted something unique. We decided on Agios Georgios Church and the adjacent Zogeria Beach. The secluded destination, lush greenery and gorgeous waters of the Argolic Gulf were the most idyllic backdrop. Our guests witnessed were transported to Zogeria (accessible by boat only) on the Buona Fortuna boat and witnessed our traditional Greek Orthodox ceremony at the most charming white washed church. Post ceremony, we ventured down the breathtaking path to our beach party setup. The soft color palette really accented the natural beauty of the setting along with the dance floor off the water and the string bistro lighting. The fireworks were the perfect ending the evening as guests danced the night away!

Santa Barbara Wedding in Shades of Pink

It comes as no surprise that we love a good pop of color here at SMP, so this Santa Barbara wedding at El Encanto sure did make us do a little happy dance when we first saw it. From the bright and fluffy blooms adorning the ceremony arch by Coco Rose Design to the soft pink accessories paired with the Groom’s light gray suit, the day incorporated pink and rosy hues in all the best ways. Head to the Vault, where all the pretty pink inspiration captured by This Modern Romance is waiting for the taking!

Sometimes you meet a couple and just get them. The way they sit, so close and comfortably. How they finish each other’s sentences and seem to continue each other’s thoughts. That is Annie and Paul. The beautiful thing here is that both of these gracious, lovely, funny, and smart people share each other’s goodness. From the first moment of their initial meeting to the last moment at the end of the last dance, these two were side by side sharing their love and goodness, not just with each other but with all of us.

Annie and Paul wanted their wedding to reflect their passion for fun and romance. El Encanto was the obvious choice for them and offered a warm and welcoming destination for their guests. Sometimes you hear “smile” about a thousand times from your photographer, but they needed no prompting on their wedding day. Stephanie of This Modern Romance captured their essence, following along as they stole kisses and playful looks. The soft neutral florals by Coco Rose made the lily pond the perfect backdrop for their sweet exchange of vows. A turtle even came up to visit and sat on his rock as he and the rest of the guests watched their first kiss. Next guests were treated to the fun. Pinks and pops of color reflected their fun personality and lively music filled the gorgeous ballroom. Soft light from the golden Santa Barbara sunset cascaded through the windows as Annie and Paul danced together for the first time as husband and wife. We used a balance of soft colors and textures from La Tavola Fine Linen to finish the tables. Guests enjoyed their dinner listening to loved ones toast the newlyweds, sharing stories, memories, and hopes for the future.

Last, DJ Gavin Roy took the party to the the next level, playing the couples’ favorite tunes late into the night. Guests danced, laughed, ate, and drank. That connection that Annie and Paul share was now shared with all of us, and it was a goodness we won’t soon forget.

You Can Have a Modern Beach Wedding + Here’s Proof

One of our favorite secrets no one tells you about destination weddings is that you don’t have to go overboard with a beachy theme. Take a look at this one by Cher Ange Weddings + Events, for example. The stylish Bride rocked a modern Suzanne Harward dress that looked stunning against the architectural backdrop of The Ungasan Clifftop Resort and Bali’s ubiquitous blue waters and ample greenery. As this modern affair captured by Balimetro Wedding Cinematography and Imaj Gallery proves, destination Brides look best when they infuse their own style with their chosen location!

From the Bride… Our style inspiration for our big day was most definitely the location, The Ungasan Clifftop Resort. These spectacular cliff-top villas are all class, style, and luxury with the most breathtaking views of the ocean. We wanted our wedding to be stylish and sophisticated to match our gorgeous setting.

Our color palette was white and a splash of gold! The location has so much color and personality – the bright blue ocean, the crisp green grass, the outstanding architecture of the villas – we thought adding any more color would be overkill (oh, except for the touch of red on my nails that matched my Louboutins!).

We were blessed with the help we received for our special day. Our chic wedding planner, Karen from Cher Ange who crafts bespoke weddings in Bali, worked tirelessly on our wedding and helped mold our vision into reality. And the staff at The Ungasan were faultless, their attentiveness and their famous Balinese smiles made the day all the more amazing.

One of our favorite moments was our first dance. It was really quite special, and so very us! We are not your waltz kind of couple, nor did we want this moment to be boring for our guests, so we employed a hip hop dance teacher to choreograph a fun little number to “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS. Lets just say my husband looked like a pro when he dipped me, and my yoga practice came in handy for the backbend!

Our flowers were superb! We had a beautiful flower arch on the edge of the cliffs with the blue ocean as our backdrop. Our flower arrangement inside the roof of the marquee was magnificent.

My dress!! Oh how I wish I could wear it again. A Suzanne Harward dress, this white, modern work of art that was so simple yet so elegant was the perfect dress to let me dance in. I kicked off the Louboutins for the reception and walked the grass barefoot; my dress was the perfect design to allow freedom whilst still looking stylish.

Without a doubt, the most exceptional thing about the day was the love. It could not have been manufactured. There was so much love in the house. And no one was afraid to say it or show it.

If I could give one piece of advice to Brides-to-be it would be to have fun! Don’t forget to enjoy yourself. Laugh, cry tears of joy, kiss your husband, and hug your family. Get swept up in the love.

Whimsical

From Jenny Quicksall PhotographyThe couple got ready with their bridal party at Westlake Village Inn in Westlake Village, CA. Jessica and the girls sipped champagne while getting their hair and makeup done in their adorable Plum Pretty Sugar robes, while in another room, David and his guys sipped whiskey and helped each other straighten their bowties. We did their first look under the rose arches at Westlake Village Inn and some Bridesmaids and Groomsmen portraits before heading to Hartley Botanica.

Hartley Botanica is a beautiful garden venue with lots of greenery and flowers – a perfect setting for Jessica’s vision. She wanted to create a romantic oasis of crystals, luscious blooms, and candles. The ceremony aisle was lined with exactly that: crystal and silk drapes, rose petals, and candles. It created such a stunning aisle for the ceremony.

Jessica and David said their I Dos under a chandelier and hanging roses. After the ceremony, we took more portraits of the Bride and Groom and their bridal party in front of a vintage fire truck. Since David is a fire fighter, it was only fitting to have one at their wedding! The reception space was designed so beautifully with dark woods, pops of pink, and white flowers and candles. They had their first dance under the sun set and twinkling lights. It was truly breathtaking. The rest of the evening, guests dined, danced, and laughed the night away. Jessica and David had a sparkler exit before they hopped on the back of the fire truck.

Send Wedding Thank You Notes Like a Pro

I will be the first to admit: I hate writing thank you notes. I was the kid that never wrote thank-you notes for my birthday presents, much to my mothers’ dismay. However, as I’ve grown up, I see the importance of a handwritten, personal card thanking someone for not only coming to the biggest event of your life, but also for gifting you with something useful and meaningful.

Emily Delamater Photography

If you’re someone who struggles to meet etiquette obligations like this, read on for some tips!

Timeline
Traditional thank-you note etiquette dictates that you should let no more than a month go by before sending out your cards. This is actually to your benefit, as it doesn’t allow you to put it off and let it pile up. If you received gifts before the wedding, send those notes out right away, ideally before the wedding.

Ashlee Raubach Photography

Stationery
Utilize proper stationery that matches your wedding suite or a custom card created with a wedding photo for a special touch. If you’re sending them before your wedding date for any early gifts, they should have your maiden name on them. If you’re sending them after the wedding, your married name is fitting. Check out some stunning personalized stationery options on Etsy!

Lauren Michelle

Get Organized
This process will be far less painless the more organized you and your partner are! Use a spreadsheet to keep track of all gifts you have received, from whom, when you got them, where (store or brand) the gift is from, if you know, and when the thank you card is sent. Reference your list as you go to make it easy to reference as write out your cards.

You can divide your list by your family and your husband’s family and have him write the thank-you notes for his side of the family and friends. Split mutual friends evenly—this will lighten the load for each of you.

Laura Murray Photography

What to Write
The messages don’t need to be lengthy— a few sentences addressing the person by name, mentioning the gift and how you plan to use it. Think of the thank-you notes as the one last task left of wedding planning and tackle them head-on!

Teamwork makes the dream work, even if writing thank-you notes isn’t exactly living the dream!

This California Wedding is Going Au Naturel and It’s Gorgeous

Inspired by their love of nature, this couple infused their Calistoga Ranch wedding with natural elements that played homage to the great outdoors along with an insanely romantic twist of course. From a chic, greenery lined aisle to elegant alfesco dining under the most insane floral + lighting installations crafted by Loop Flowers & Event Arts and planned by L’Relyea Events, this wedding is luxury meets au naturel. Get up close and personal with all the pretty details captured by The De Jaureguis.

From the Bride…We love the outdoors, and wanted to incorporate natural elements, so we were highly inspired by different textures and colors found in nature; natural wood grains, the effects of lighting, petals/greenery/foliage. We chose our venue due to it’s luxurious, natural setting. Some parts of the event come across as rustic, but I actually never thought of it that way. I prefer to think of it from the standpoint of the emotions evoked and the atmosphere that all of these elements together create. To add elegance and warmth, we included hints of cream/ivory and gold/rose gold, while featuring beautiful lighting throughout the spaces.

For the overall feel of each of the 3 locations in which our wedding events took place, we pursued a natural and lush feel: focusing on lighting and greenery. We sought to soften structures that may appear harsh aesthetically. The ceremony was in a structured tent with vines and garlands lining the cross bars, and a lovely draped garland at the altar, pooling in a grouping of ferns at the floor. The dinner took place on a lawn, with 2 long farm tables (with rose gold flatware) – hanging from the open air tent structure were custom built Edison bulb/wood plank “chandeliers” overflowing with foliage (greenery, and white flowers). Dancing took place in the wine cave, where we offered a contrast of elegant hops hanging from the more medieval style chandeliers, while 4 disco balls spun with dynamic colored lighting.

From the Sound of Music to a Wildly Romantic Wedding

After growing up with The Sound of Music on repeat (seriously, it was my fave), it’s safe to say Schloss Leopoldskron, the Austrian castle featured in the film, is the end all be all of dream venues. And for this Bride and Groom, that dream venue turned into a stunning display of romance with the help of Signature Events. Watch this Salzburg celebration unfold one gorgeous image at a time all captured by Grace & Blush. Plus even more right here!

Hallie, a native Texan living in California, and Jürgen, a native German living in London, met in Nashville, TN, at a personal development retreat. With strict rules of no cell phones, TV and portable electronics, the two were stripped of distractions and assigned the same group for the week. They learned about each other’s strengths, weakness, insecurities, and saw the person for who they really were and fell in love. They managed a long distance relationship between San Diego and London for a year and half, and On March 27th 2016, Jürgen took Hallie to the beautiful town of Füssen in Germany, where he had spent countless childhood vacations. After shopping for traditional German outfits, Dirndl and Lederhosen, they went to the magical castle of Neuschwanstein, where Jürgen got down on one knee on the king’s balcony.

The proposal set the tone – Hallie and Jürgen decided to celebrate their wedding with guests from all over the world in a romantic castle. And could you ever find more romance than in Schloss Leopoldskron, the Sound of Music castle located in beautiful Salzburg, Austria. To honour both their heritages, their three day wedding celebrations were kicked off with a Mini-Oktoberfest in a traditional beer cellar, overlooking Salzburg’s old town. Dress code “Tracht” – that meant that everybody got into Dirdls and Lederhosen, enjoying typical German games, great traditional music and, you guessed it, quite a bit of beer. On Sunday, the wedding celebrations was rounded off with a delicious American inspired brunch with pancakes, waffles and crispy bacon and a view of Schloss Leopoldkron.

For their wedding celebration on Saturday, Hallie and Jürgen had a vision of effortless, classy and organic feel that worked so well with the traditional elegance of the castle. Lot’s of greenery, paired with anemones, succulents and pillar candles created a feelings as if the woods had taken back a little piece of the castle. The ceremony aisle was lined with greenery arrangements and pictures of the couple’s parents and grandparents on their wedding day. The altar was framed with springy, blossoming twigs of pear trees, right in front of the famous horse gates from “The Sound of Music.”

Someone was watching over them, as an outside ceremony usually never happens in March in Austria – but at noon, the clouds were whisked away, the fog lifted and the sun brought out the beautiful view of the lake and the mountains. The ceremony had many emotional highlights: Hallie’s father, a pastor, officiated the service. Honoring the international background of their family and friends, Hallie and Jürgen incorporated 12 different languages into their ceremony, with friends from all over the world quoting Corinthians 13 “Love is patient” in their native languages. As a first task as husband and wife, Hallie and Jürgen cut their wedding cake, beautifully designed with their gold monogram and sugar greenery and then invited their guests to enjoy champagne, coffee and cake, a tradition amongst Germans.

For dinner, the great historic marble hall with the grand crystal chandeliers was opened, and guests found their seats at the tables which were named after milestones in Hallie and Jürgen’s love story. As spreading kindness is something very important to the bride and groom, a table was dedicated to this and had random acts of kindness hidden underneath the plates of 12 guests. Making the wedding a personal affair was also very important to the couple – so instead of gifts, they asked their guests to contribute a talent to their special day. The stationery was designed by a grooms friend together with the bride; Hallie’s girlfriend, a famous hair stylist, did her hair on the day of, a friend and singer from Poland treated them to a polish love song during the ceremony.

Hallie Heeg recently raised £1m to open up her own eating disorder centre in London. Being in recovery from bulimia herself, she wanted to create a program that would help others who were struggling. The theme of vulnerability and kindness was spread throughout the wedding weekend.

From Wedding Planner, Cathy, of COJ EventsLiz and Josh are a fun happy couple that really wanted to create an interesting and unique wedding with fun experiential elements at the beautiful Vintage Country Club in Indian Wells. Although one of the more traditional private clubs in the Palm Springs Area, the team at the Vintage were excited and happy to embrace the creative elements that were added to the couples’ special day. After a non-traditional ceremony that included all 250 guests forming a large circle around the couple, a Dixie Land Band and stilt walkers led the guests from the ceremony to cocktails. A magician entertained guests at cocktails, and as they sat for dinner, a cigar roller kept the non-dancers happy later in the night, and an In and Out Truck provided a late night snack. Interspersed through all of this were more traditional wedding element – fabulous flowers, heartfelt toasts, cutting the cake, and dancing to an amazing band. The day was flawless, creative, and fun – everything the couple wanted!

From the Bride… From a young age, I knew I wanted to feel very bridal on my wedding. I knew I wanted to be able to move in my dress and not worry about what I ate to feel in-shape for a tight dress. After traveling all over (even Paris) and trying on as many dresses as I could, I decided on the off-white Monique Lhuillier Wisteria Gown. It was formal and large but had a vintage feel. The dress featured an asymmetrical skirt, lace roses (a nod to the Groom’s last name) and tulle, a tight bodice, and thick lace straps. The back was sheer with a beautiful vine of rosettes going down the spine. You cannot go wrong in Monique. The veil was cathedral length with lace roses on the perimeter to match the dress. I think every Bride needs a cathedral length veil no matter what setting it is. It makes the pictures so much better. Jewelry was all heirloom pieces. The earrings were my deceased grandmother’s. I had a “something blue” bracelet from my deceased aunt. My shoes were Christian Louboutin Pigalle sequin flats. Attached to my bouquet was a button that I took from my aunt’s button jar on the day she passed. I have had it in my car since she passed but wanted it with me on my big day. The Wedding Detailers sewed it onto my bouquet ribbon for me as a reminder that she was with me on the day. I ended the night in a custom made bomber jacket with an embroidered tomato (a nod to my family’s business) vine-wrapped with a rose (another nod to the Groom’s last name), a blue hummingbird (a nod to deceased family members), and the words “Mrs. Rose” at the top.

The 3 Wedding Guests That Should Always Get a Plus One

Remember that great wedding you went to where you knew no one but the bride and groom? You know, the one where you sat at dinner with the grooms’ cousins sister (you’re besties now!), danced the night away solo, and then headed to the airport the next morning for a long trek back home alone? Wasn’t that wedding the best? #SaidNoOneEver

When He Found Her

It’s true—I’m not engaged and have never had to make a wedding guest list—but I do know a thing or two about being an actual wedding guest. And trust me, a plus one makes all of the difference when it comes to a great time versus just an ok time. Plus, an even number of invitees will make your seating arrangements that much easier to plan.

I know, brides, that’s not what you want to hear. But in all honesty, the following situations deserve a plus one.

Anyone in Your Bridal Party
While being in someones bridal party is absolutely incredible (hi Ali and Alyssa!), it can also be a lot of time, money, energy, and commitment. And having a dance partner when all is said and done is truly the icing on the cake. At my best friend’s wedding last summer, having my boyfriend there didn’t just mean having someone to take pictures with. It meant having the person that’s the most important to me experience and be a part of my best friend’s love for her husband. And that’s a moment we’ll always remember together.

Any Guest in a Long Term Relationship
Discounting couples in a long term relationship (but not yet married) or couples that live together can be stifling. If you know a couple is truly committed, giving them the benefit of the doubt and including them both isn’t just generous, it’s thoughtful. Imagine how you would have felt to not be included a mere months before you got engaged or married. Bonus points if you include both full names on the invitation and not just “Guest.”

Anyone Who Has A Long Way to Travel
Is your wedding a destination, out of town, or does the guest attending have to take a train, plane, and automobile to attend? If you answered yes to any of these, then by all means, plus one them. Traveling can be stressful, complicated, and getting to the wedding alone can put a damper on the whole weekend, especially if the guest doesn’t know anyone else attending. And now that weddings have become a weekend-affair, making sure your out-of-town-guest has someone to hang with at the welcome party campfire should be a common courtesy. You would want the same!

A Picture Perfect Palm Springs Wedding

Number One: this dress. Swoon central. Number Two: this venue. Can I just move here for the foreseeable future? Number Three: these florals by Artisan Events. Bouquet of white peonies? Perfect. And Number Four: this beautiful Bride. She put together this flawless wedding and with Monocle Project’s pics, we’re able to go gaga over every bit all.day.long. Don’t say we didn’t warn ya…

From the Bride… Chris and I first met in high school but didn’t start hanging out regularly until late senior year when we realized we were both headed to the same college in Boulder. Chris actually asked me to prom earlier that year, but I had another date and had to turn him down. I guess he forgave me for the prom incident, as we started spending a lot of time together first semester of college. We fell for each other as summer turned to fall that year and spent the rest of college dating. Our nine year relationship consisted of a lot of dream chasing, some unfortunate long distance, and a whole lot of adventure.

A month before the wedding, we found out Chris matched for his orthopedic surgery residency in Los Angeles, so our Palm Springs bash was kind of like a homecoming us! We wanted our wedding to be relaxed and fun, because that’s how our relationship has always been. We went with a very neutral color palette to allow for the natural beauty of the Coachella Valley to shine. Palm Springs was the location Chris and I first went on vacation together when we were 19 years old and it was always my dream wedding location!

I had a few favorite moments from our wedding day. First, the morning of I was completely surprised when Chris had set up a private massage for me to relax before I had to start getting ready. He knew I would undoubtedly be stressed the morning of, so his little surprise definitely put me at ease. Second, I have danced for most of my life so my dad and I surprised the crowd with a fun hip-hop routine we choreographed to “Dance Like Yo Daddy” by Meghan Trainor. Lastly, I genuinely felt so much love and happiness that night. I knew our family and friends were so happy for us and Chris had the biggest smile on his face all night long. It was the best.

From the Monocle Project

The dress: Seeing the empty dress hanging in preparation for the bride, you could imagine how beautiful Courtney would be in it, but when Courtney walked out of the room and everyone saw her for the first time walking out in her gown, the room went quiet with awe. One’s imagination could not have prepared them for how stunning Courtney looked in that moment.

The location: La Quinta Country Club had been a highly sought after location by Courtney and Chris because of its breathtaking views of the mountains and the inspiring architecture of the club itself. Scattered with palm trees and a reserved spot beneath a giant olive tree made this the perfect venue for all the celebrations and joy of their union with one another.

Here’s How to Do a Modern Statement Bouquet

From bright, statement bouquets to breathtaking city views, and a wedding filled with two beautiful ceremonies, this day is chock full of the good stuff. Scratch that…. beautiful stuff. Held at the Aracely Cafe overlooking the San Francisco bay, the Bride and Groom wanted to honor their love of community and culture with a celebration that showcased all of the above. See how beautifully they pulled it off through the images by Jenny Soi.

From the Photographer… This refreshing and unique colorful wedding was inspired by the couple’s love for their community and culture. Dionne and Ruel celebrated at a beautiful gem of a venue Aracely Cafe, located right on the marina overlooking the bay area, their home town. I love the bride’s minimalist gown and statement bouquet, and the groom’s unexpected emerald colored suit. Above all, I loved how much joy they shared on their first look and while exchanging vows.

This Bride Wore 3 Dresses on Her Wedding Day

We’ve seen many a wedding where the Bride wore her mother or grandmother’s dress, but this story is a bit different. This stunning Bride, Anna, wore her grandmother’s dress that was also worn by her mother, four sister and 14 other women in their family! A truly special heirloom that inspired her vintage style soiree. Anna also had two more wardrobe changes, totaling three dresses. Amazing right? Eliza Morrill captured every moment (and every fashionable number) of this meaningful day—see it all here.

From Eliza MorrillWhen most brides envision their wedding day, they likely don’t envision wearing the same dress as her mother and all four of their sisters – much less by fourteen other women in their family! For Anna, though, that wasn’t the case. Wearing the dress that her great grandmother purchased in 1965 was an honor and a necessity. For that reason, she based her whole day around the dress, keeping everything light and elegant to match the vintage gown. Anna, a nurse, and Nick, an attorney, met in Anna’s hometown of Columbus, Georgia, and immediately hit it off. Though Nick was living there and Anna two hours away in Atlanta, it didn’t take long for them to realize that they were meant to be. Anna soon moved back to her hometown and, not much longer, the two were engaged! When Anna began planning their wedding, she knew that she wanted to celebrate all of the meaningful relationships in their lives: “I envisioned our wedding day being a really happy and beautiful day. I knew it would be very emotional and full of love – not only between Nick and me, but between our families and friends.”

The end result was a classic, elegant day with pops of fun and color to make it truly stand out. As the youngest of five girls, Anna wanted to ensure that her sisters’ dresses had a little extra “something” to distinguish them from the rest of her bridesmaids, who wore floor length, pale pink gowns. That said, she opted for the same dress but with a pop of color – a colorful, floral watercolor design on the skirt. It was the perfect touch. Nick and his groomsmen opted for white dinner jackets – the perfect compliment to the girls’ attire. Even the couple’s dog, Nala, made an appearance – sporting one of the most breathtaking flower collars I’ve ever seen. When choosing her vendors, Anna made it her priority to keep things local. “It was important to me to highlight our wonderful vendors here so I decided to ‘shop small,'” she said. “My good friend Courtney made my bridesmaids’ earrings. Our family friend at Shuler Studio designed the beautiful monogram that we used everywhere from the invitations, to the cocktail napkins and stirrers, to the gobo lit up on the gorgeous rock wall at The Big Eddy. My sisters even did the calligraphy!”

Though the details and vendors made the day unique and special, one part of the day, in particular, stood out to Anna: “My favorite moment, hands down, was walking down the aisle. I loved holding my dad’s arm and I LOVED seeing Nick’s face. I also loved those couple of minutes right before walking down the aisle with just me and my dad. It was a special feeling.”

For her reception, Anna felt that a wardrobe change was in order: “Although I loved the traditional feel that my mother’s gown had, I thought for the reception I would wear something a little more trendy- So I went with a BHLDN dress and belt that my best friend and maid of honor, Rion, surprised me with!”

Anna + Nick’s reception reflected her new dress – traditional decor but with a little more fun. “I wanted to surprise Nick and my dad with a few things, so I got the local cigar store to help me find a cigar roller to come to the reception. We had a cigar and bourbon/scotch bar on the patio and the men loved it! We also served mini cuban sandwiches at the cigar bar to go along with the theme,” Anna told us. “Once the band really got started, we handed out light up flower crowns to my bridesmaids and the mother of the bride and groom, which really highlighted them and made them feel special (and beautiful because everyone feels beautiful with a flower crown!)”

To top off the night, Anna opted for one more wardrobe change – an homage to a tradition of her mother’s generation. Anna wore a hot pink dress by Abbey Glass and Nick a blue sport coat as they ran down a tunnel of tossed lavender and sped off in a red cadillac. Truly, it was a day to remember!

“Tradition, family, and community are very important to me,” said Anna, “and I think that is what the guests could feel.”

This Wedding Is the Definition of Industrial Chic

I think you can get to know a lot about the kind of love a Bride and Groom just by their smiles. And these two? Well, their smiles say it all. Working with a handful of our fabulous Little Black Book Members including Polka Dot Events, 501 Union, Cobblestone Catering, Face Time Beauty Concierge and Isabelle Selby, they pulled off an industrial chic wedding for the books. Join us for allll the moody romance, over in the full gallery!

From Tracey at Polka Dot Events… Though both New York City born and bred, it took a move to Washington D. C. For law school at Georgetown University for Manhattanite Caroline and Staten Island native Max to meet and begin their relationship. The two were engaged by graduation and soon moved back to NYC where they settled in Brooklyn with their adorable doodle puppy named Edna. Caroline, an advocate and attorney, and Max, also an attorney, decided to hold their wedding at 501 Union, a former supper club with a swanky New York vibe, and teamed up with Tracey Goldstein of Polka Dot Events and Sachi Rose Design to transform the space, and plan an event that was uniquely “them.”

From their Staten Island Ferry Save The Dates (with Edna as the Captain) to their Earth-Day influenced favors (complete with Baggu reusable bags, ACLU bookmarks, the US Constitution, and seed packets) each detail of the wedding embodied Caroline and Max’s unique touch and personalities. Groupings of wildflowers lined the aisle leading up to a wild and asymmetrical cherry blossom chuppah with colorful orange, green and burgundy floral accents. Caroline, her mother and brother walked down the aisle to Sweet Caroline as the room smiled and giggled at the song choice. The ceremony was officiated by Cantor Nancy Bach, and Caroline and Max recited their own vows. Inside the reception, a large greenery installation was created to look as it was creeping out from 501’s skylights, and large wood tables were decorated with lush and colorful urn centerpieces and still-life accents of greenery and fruit. At each place setting sat natural linen napkins, sprigs of rosemary and a combined menu-placecard complete with an illustration of Edna in her dinner gear. The night was full of delicious new American style food from Cobblestone Catering and ended with a delicious dessert table of sweet bites and a small cutting cake from Luckybird Bakery.
