Ahhh, the constant hunt for the perfect foundation. I didn’t find mine until a couple of years ago, and I’m 32! In a world of YouTube beauty tutorials and friends claiming they’ve found the best one yet, it’s easy to see why we’re constantly changing up our makeup routines—particularly our foundation. So instead of titling this post How to Find THE Perfect Foundation, I felt …YOUR Perfect Foundation was a better fit. No two skin types are exactly the same, so rather than trying what works for everyone else, start by doing your own homework with the steps below.
Understand Your Skin Type
First things first, make sure you really understand your skin type. Are you dry, oily, combination or normal? Do you have acne, redness or brown spots, wrinkles, etc.? Knowing your skins strengths and weaknesses is the first step toward foundation success. Keep the following in mind with each of these skin types:
Dry
If your current foundation leaves your skin feeling flaky, you’re in need of a moisture-packed foundation. Creamy, gel-based and oil options are great for your skin. Also, consider your pre-foundation routine. Are you using a moisturizer? When my skin feels extra dry, I’ll actually mix a little of my moisturizer in with my foundation for a boost.
Oily
Sure, you want to glow, but you don’t want to look like you just got out of the gym all the time. If you’re on the oily side, avoid foundations that are oil based and try a silicone option.
Combination
For combination skin, a clay option is great. It mattifys, while balancing out those dry and oil spots at the same time. You’ll also want to avoid illuminating options that boast a dewy finish.
Normal
If you’ve got pretty normal skin, great! If your skin tends to change slightly with the seasons (like mine), focus on the tips above for dry or oily moments. You might even want to keep two foundation options on hand for those seasonal changes.
Not quite sure what your skin type is? Book a consultation at your local spa and ask for someone who specializes in dermatology. It is absolutely worth spending the money, rather than spending it on foundation after foundation that doesn’t work for you.
Choose Your Shade
Once you’ve figured out your skin type, time to select your shade. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
This seems like a no brainer, but when testing out shades, avoid applying while you already have make up on! Also, test on a few different areas of your face and neck (not your hand or wrist! who else has done this?!) and make sure to do your testing in as natural light as possible.
Consider that your skin tone will change seasonally with a tan, or if you use self tanners. I recommend having two shades on hand. One to use during the time of year your skin is most tan and one to use when your skin is at it’s most fair. Then, during those in between months, you can mix a custom combo of the two!
Ask a pro. Just like figuring out your skin type, it is always helpful to get help from a makeup artist who knows their stuff!
Master the Application
Choosing the right tools for application is JUST as important as understanding your skin type and selecting your shade. Different formulas work best with specific tools. Here are some pointers for selecting the right tool:
A foundation brush is ideal for applying a liquid foundation. There are several types of brushes you can go with which is personal preference! I personally loveee this brush for applying my liquid foundation. It is a bit pricey, but sooo worth it, I promise!
A sponge is great for focusing on smaller areas and blending concealer with foundation.
Simply using your fingers is ideal for applying lighter foundations, BB creams or tinted moisturizers.
