Christine Dovey’s home was first featured on SMP a few years back. And y’all. The joy that I got in sharing it was a little embarrassing, a little fan-girl stalker-ish. I can admit that now. But I was sitting at my computer last night, going through the TONS of home tours that we’ve gone on and boom, there it was again. Just as pretty. Just as forever. And here I am, gushing all over again, like I haven’t missed a beat. And, I’m pretty sure that each of these rooms would make the very top of the most-pinned ever spaces on SMP too…the nursery alone, is pretty much an SMP ICON. ALL rooms here!
Our living room is a large rectangular space that is lined with windows on one wall. It’s a difficult room to arrange because of its long narrow shape. To start, we painted all the walls with my new favourite white, ‘Snowfall’ by Para Paints. A speckled hide sits on top of a graphic black/white rug and on top of both, a DIY’d IKEA coffee table in a small scale keeps the floor space nice and open. And a modern photographic portrait by artist Stephanie Vovas makes the fireplace a fabulous focal point.
A brass curtain rod was hung to cover the entire window wall and store bought panels with custom pleated pink silk were added to frame each window. The cream and black scheme of the chairs is also picked up throughout the space. For furniture, I large selected a tuxedo style sofa and upholstered it in a dark charcoal durable fabric.
On the opposite side of the room is a pair of very modern lounge chairs. I love how sculptural they are and how the wood arms pick up on the sideboard.
A vintage rosewood sideboard that belonged to my mother in law is the main storage piece in the room and adds a clean modern feel to the space. On top of the sideboard, sits a sculptural vintage tulip lamp, which is literally my husband’s favourite thing in our home.
On top of the credenza is an amazingly original painting by artist Jen Mann…the graphic portrait and bold colour absolutely set the the modern, gallery like tone of the room. Beside both sits a large leaning floor mirror- its ornate style is a nice contrast to the clean lined credenza.
And perhaps my favourite furniture piece, the antique gilt settee…it’s chippy paint and feminine lines make it such a foundation piece in the room.
FOYERBecause our main floor is made up only of a hallway, kitchen and living room, I really wanted the foyer to feel like a special space in its own right. I chose the ostrich wallpaper first and it really served as jumping off space for the whole room. A pair of vintage French chairs were re-upholstered in a bold black and white graphic fabric with a more feminine floral on the back.
FOYER Mirrors were placed behind each chair so that the delicate fabric could be showcased even when the chairs are placed against the wall. To make the space feel even wider than it is, I added a vintage tessellated stone console with brass detail – its narrow profile helped keep the space open.
A vintage Moroccan shag keeps things neutral but adds more texture and plays off the colours of the wallpaper. A large scale fashion print brings in a hit of subtle pink and the chandelier above adds some sparkle. For paint, I chose Para Paints ‘Snowfall’ for the walls, while the stairs were done with a combination of ‘Snowfall’ and ‘Black’.
Unlike most traditional floor plans, our kitchen is at the front of the house and the first thing you see when you enter our home. As such, I really wanted it to be a very real reflection of my personal style…the mandate with the design was to actually make it feel unlike a kitchen. Working with designer Meredith Heron, we collaborated to create a space that feels more like a Parisian studio or a New York gallery.
The island was designed to feel like a campaign dresser with a waterfall edge chosen to keep things clean and modern. When it came to the lighting, I really wanted to source vintage fixtures. The French inspired chandelier above the island was chosen because of its great juxtaposition with the clean lines of the island. For the cabinets, I wanted to again keep things slightly un-kitchen like so we chose to do open shelves on one side and a clean and modern rectangular custom hood in white keeps that side of the space open and simple. In place of countertops, we chose to do a slab marble shelf that feels reminiscent of an antique washbasin/vanity. For hardware, we chose various brass finishes for everything.
Above the dining table sits a matched pair of vintage Murano chandeliers in a blush glass- their large scale and hit of pink add a very dramatic element to the space. And for the seating area, we again mixed styles and eras by using a mid-century tulip table, Panton chairs draped in sheepskin fur, and a more feminine style banquette upholstered in faux snakeskin.
And to finish things off, a pair of framed chinoiserie panels flank the pink and white hand-painted (by Meredith Heron) silk curtains…the later are actually my favourite thing in the room.
Our basement started off as a glorified storage room. After deciding to renovate, we were thrilled when Home Depot and Para Paints approached up about working together on the revamp. After the structural work was complete, the cosmetic changes began. For the living room area, I took an antique fireplace surround, painted it white (Para Paints ‘Chrysler Hall’) and had it installed to give this area a much needed focal point.
From there, I added some comfortable furniture to create a great family room/TV watching area. My favourite pieces in this space are the custom media unit our carpenter created and the large scale mural from ‘anewall.’
For our laundy room, I covered all the walls in a standard 3×6 white subway tile; dark grout was added to make the space feel a little ‘old world/subway’ esque. Floating shelves were hung for display and a butcher block counter was added to span the space. I added some much needed character to the space with a set of amazing vintage doors from Hungary. To make them even more special, I painted them in a high gloss black and had etched glass with the words ‘laundry room’ installed in the door openings.
In the bathroom, we used the same subway tile as we did in the laundry room to line all the walls. A suspended sink was chosen to take advantage of the small space and above it, we selected an ornate Moroccan mirror for its great juxtaposition with the more modern finishes.
Because there wasn’t room for a large shower, I chose not to have the area completely glassed in but instead, installed one solid piece of glass and had a custom powder coated steel grid created to add interest. The floor in a black and white marble mosaic, really helps with the old subway station feel.
I really wanted my youngest daughter’s room to feel like a fairy-tale jewelry box. My daughter is most definitely a girly-girl who loves fashion and all things pretty so I really ran with that when designing this space. To start, I selected a gold floral wallpaper and put it on all the walls. Because there was only one full height wall to hold the bed, I had a custom valance made to completely conceal the one narrow window on the wall and serve as a great backdrop for the bed.
A fuchsia pink settee was added for drama and opposite to it, an IKEA vanity was given a coat of high gloss pink. Next, I took big box curtain panels and customized them with pom pom fringe. An antique French chair, vintage wardrobe and pair of ornate figural lamps help to make the space feel even more feminine. And finally, on either side of the desk I DIYd a pair of clothes wracks by spraying them gold…my daughter has always loved creating displays with her clothes so I love how she’s able to now display her favourite ensembles.
After many design boards that ran the gamut of styles, I decided that I really wanted my nursery to be soft and serene so I settled on a palate of white, cream, grey and black. To start, I had my carpenter apply detail moulding to all the walls to really add some architectural interest. Then, I painted all the walls white, put down a cream shag rug and hung a pair of cream/black curtain panels.The crib was one we have used with all of our children and across from it, I selected an IKEA dresser for its clean lines and amazing storage.
For the focal point, a reproduction French daybed was chosen and is the perfect place to read bedtimes stories, feed and cuddle with our little one…it’s absolutely my favourite piece in the room. And finally, some custom artwork and dramatic lighting really make the room come to life.
I wanted to create a dynamic space for our eldest daughter’s bedroom. To start, I took advantage of the dropped ceiling to hang a pair of suspended bulb pendants on either side of the bed.
Wall to wall hand painted silk curtain panels were hung to help conceal the small window and make the otherwise bland wall, a focal point. A low slung gloss bed was chosen because of the built in side tables and modern feel. And underfoot, an abstract rug was placed to add some much needed colour and graphic edge.
