Wildfire Makes for Dramatic Wedding Photos

I’ve been happily working at SMP for over four years now and when it comes to weddings, I’ve pretty much seen everything.  Until now.  Because this, my friends, isn’t just your average, everyday nuptials. It’s a raging wildfire attempting to stop a wedding ceremony, and a gorgeous bride and groom committed to making it through their I do’s, despite the fire trucks, sirens and billowing smoke in the distance.  The result?  One take your breath away moment after another captured by Josh Newton. See it all right here.

From Josh Newton… This wedding is definitely one for the books. About 11am, a small brush fire turned into a giant wildfire about six miles from the ceremony site. The wedding was at 4 pm, and everyone was setup. Right as the bride was about to walk down, a firetruck came in, sirens blaring, and told the bride we had to evacuate. In tears, her father announced to all the guests that we had to move the wedding. Incredibly, the fireman then told us we could have the ceremony and then had to leave. I’ve never seen anything like what happened next. Everyone moved the entire wedding to a park in Bend, all with smiles and good attitudes. It showed everyone at the wedding what really mattered – the people and the couple.

The location change didn’t affect the wedding at all, it was the most beautiful day. In planning my own wedding, it was an incredible reminder to really value and cherish the most important things in life. While the guests, caterers, and DJ all moved to Drake Park and setup, we snuck away and got some of the most incredible wedding photos I’ve ever taken. The couple was happy and thankful the entire time we were shooting photos while everyone was setting up at the park. They really had the most incredible attitude and it was an honor to work with them and really see what mattered. When I was taking the photos I had no idea how amazing they would turn out, but I couldn’t be happier!

Surprise Proposal Caught on Film

We’ve seen our fair share of fabulous proposals, but a surprise beach proposal caught on film?  That just about takes the cake.  Especially when the darling couple behind the big moment also happens to be the fabulous twosome from RP Imagery, with the dapper groom-to-be setting up his camera (tricky + romantic) to catch every amazing second.  Get ready for some happy tears and press play.

From the Bride… We are a team who enjoy filming love stories and intimate weddings, so we especially enjoyed putting together our own. Drew set up a tripod (with me just under the impression that we were going to hold hands and goof around, capturing our 4th coast trip) and than came over to me and got down on one knee, asking me to spend forever with him.

As videographers ourselves, I’ve always told him that I want all of our special moments filmed or captured – and him being more of a personal guy, he made sure to make that happen – while still keeping it intimate, as we were the ONLY two people on the entire beach at that moment.

It couldn’t have been more romantic as it was a rainy, cold day at the beach and the clouds happened to part just as he proposed and stayed that way for us, just him and me, on the beach for a few hours.

Enjoy this short film of how us videographers ended up filming our own love story!

Elegant Oregon Wine Country Wedding

When both laughter and sniffles can be heard at a wedding ceremony, you know it was good. And this wedding? Oh, it was good. With design and coordination from La Boheme Events, those moments of happiness were surrounded by the brightest details that made the whole day come to life. See it all right here in the gallery from Altura Studio!

From Altura StudioWhat struck me most about Lauren and Jason’s wedding on the last weekend of August was how happy everyone was. There was something in the air that put smiles on everyone’s faces. Grins all around. Nothing could break the bubbly spell that settled over the day as everybody prepared for the wedding. Not one teeny tiny bit of stress. The bridesmaids and groomsmen seemed to have a great time and I know for certain that all the parents were delighted all day.

I don’t need to say how lovely everyone and everything looked. Pick any photo of Lauren and you’ll see her shine with happiness and excitement. Her drop-waisted, low-back dress was the only one of it’s kind I saw all season. Jason? One classy dude. The pics of Jason and Lauren meeting up for the first time are among my very favorites of the day.

Under a natural canopy of vines, a curtain of satin ribbons, hung with copper bells was a colorful backdrop for their ceremony. Jason’s father was the officiant, who at time, was both funny and sentimental. Laughter and sniffles could both heard during the ceremony. Guests where given small polished stones as they were seated at the ceremony. Guests blessed each stone with a special wish for the couple as Lauren and Jason said their vows. The blessed stones were collected and presented to the couple in a lovely basket which will have a special place in their new home together.

Afterwards, the couple celebrated with a farm-to-table style meal prepared by the groovy guys and gals at Farm to Fork. Ikat linens in blue and white complemented the colorful arrangements of blue hydrangea, and a rainbow of dahlias. The farm-to-table menu was accompanied by the venue’s local wines.

Intimate Mountain Elopement

So, this couple is pretty much the coolest duo you’ll ever meet.  Like the kind of twosome that hikes to the top of a breathtaking mountain and says “I do” amongst snow flurries with their awesome friends and family.  Think a handmade gown, red-hued florals from Passionflower Design and one beautiful moment after another captured by Jay Eads.  See them all here

From Jay Eads… Keep the intimate weddings coming, that’s what I say. If I had any control over it, I would probably do a 50/50 mix of big weddings and elopements, not only to keep things fresh, but also to sneak a few hikes a year in. It just so happens that I had been craving a good winter adventure. The snow fight… the purple hair… the good friend who went out of her way to replace the hair girl last minute… the three pairs of tights, socks, and built-in bloomers to combat the cold… Sienna’s emotion when putting on the dress that she made herself… the locket with her grandfather who passed away days before the wedding… the fog… the windy freezing fog… the gloriously tempestuous freezing fog. So much I will remember about this one.

Sienna and Evan love the outdoors and wanted a small ceremony/elopement during the winter, and I’m pretty sure they got exactly what they wanted.

Mint & Gold Portland Winter Wedding

The color palette in this wedding just makes me smile. Mint and gold? It’s just a lovely combo. But the couple at the center of this stylish fête is even lovelier. Their big day sparkles from the first picture captured by Sweetlife Photography to the very last, and you can see every picture perfect moment here.

From the Bride…Brad and Jenna met at the University of Oregon when Brad had returned from a year of studying abroad in South America to his new job at Jenna’s sorority house as the “house boy.” They came to know each other better and better, day by day, and as a winter formal house dance grew near, Jenna decided to pull a quick prank on Brad and ask him to be her date to the dance by writing in ketchup, “Will you go to Ivy Ball with me?” on the white dinner plates that Brad later had to wash…

After a few years of college, post college life in Portland, Oregon, and an adventurous move to San Francisco, Brad got up the nerve to propose ocean side at Manresa Beach in Santa Cruz. They shared the news with their family and friends and soon after the elaborate wedding festivities and a year of planning began.

They decided to have an elegant winter wedding up in Jenna’s beloved home state of Oregon. The couple fell in love with the industrial, yet warm atmosphere of the Leftbank Annex in Portland. The décor was themed mint and gold with lots of shimmering candlelight that played beautifully with the contrast of the brick and steel atmosphere. The bride wore a crystal lace drop waist gown by designer Romona Kevez, while the bridesmaids wore floor length mint chiffon dresses by Joanna August, and the men looked timeless in their classic black and white Vera Wang tuxes.

The couple walked down the aisle to an acoustic rendition of Bruno Mars’ “Marry You” played by a close family friend, whose father served as the officiant. The ceremony was funny, sweet, and very genuine highlighted by the amount of happy tears flowing from the 230 guests that attended. After the ceremony, the guests filed downstairs for a cocktail hour and upon returning upstairs for dinner, speeches and cake, were all happily entertained with a surprise rendition of Usher’s “Confessions” reworked to simply say: “we love Jenna more than you”, performed by the two hilarious brothers of the groom. The Portland craft beer and California wine flowed freely as everyone celebrated the newlyweds. It was a full dance floor and lots of love and laughter that wrapped up the rest of what the bride and groom describe as: “The best night EVER!”

From the Bride… Spenser and I met on the first day of 7th grade in our hometown of Lake Oswego, Oregon. Our relationship grew over 6 years of friendship, until we finally started dating for an additional 5 years. We were lucky to go to college just 30 miles away from each other in Southern California before my job after graduation took me to Texas and Wisconsin. Finally, after almost a year of long distance we found ourselves back in Southern California the summer of 2012. We found an apartment in Redondo Beach and Spenser proposed to me that September just a few miles up the road on the sand in Manhattan Beach, CA.

Immediately following our engagement, we knew it was a no brainer that we would have our wedding in Oregon. Known for its beautiful summers, we wanted nothing more than to bring our family and friends together to have a July wedding in Lake Oswego.

We quickly booked our venue at the Oswego Lake Country Club and planned for our vows in the Agnes Flanagan Chapel at Lewis & Clark, with a tented reception on the golf course. It allowed us to build our vision from the ground up. Because of our history, the most important thing to us was the coming together of our family and friends. While we knew it was going to be a large 300+ person wedding, we wanted it to feel intimate. We felt so blessed that everyone in each of our wedding parties had all been friends growing up together for the last 11 years. It made the day that much more special.

The vision for the day was a romantic, lush wedding in tones of blush, pinks, soft whites, ivory and cream. We loved the idea of relaxed elegance with a twist and using romantic blooms like garden roses, peonies, hydrangeas, and orchids. We wanted candles everywhere and twinkling lights. Thankfully, Kim Foren, of Geranium Lakes put this vision to life. We used Pinterest and wedding magazines to create the inspiration for one of the big focal points of the wedding: the hanging floral over the head table. We gathered a few inspirational images and let Kim and her imagination run. When we walked into the reception we were blown away by the beauty she had created.

Also, it was very important to us to weave personal touches and detail into the wedding. Our “table cards” were custom mini champagne bottles that the guests would take home has a favor. Everything from the “Redondo Love” specialty cocktail at the bar to the “Halvorsen Flank Steak” on the menu really spoke to us as a couple.

While our wedding was large, it truly felt intimate and like a reunion of all of our closest family and friends. All of our vendors were amazing, and we were so lucky to have the day captured by Jessica Hill Photography and Moetic Wedding Films. We now can look back on the best day of our lives for years to come.

Romantic Vineyard Wedding Inspiration

I’m a true believer that a nice glass of wine will make any day just a little bit better.  I also happen to believe that Oregon is one of the prettiest places on the planet.  So add in some gorgeous vineyard inspiration to all of the above (from a talented team of vendors, no less) and you have the epitome of awesome.  See it all captured by Murray Photography right here.

From Murray Photography… I am so excited to share this styled shoot with you, the winery is only a few miles from my home, and I have a deep connection with the community and wine industry. Sokol Blosser is booking an extremely limited number of weddings starting in 2014 and we were thrilled to be some of the first people to step foot in the beautiful tasting room. It was designed byBrad Cloepfil who is famous for designing the Wieden+Kennedy space in SW Portland. I worked with an amazing team to show off the beauty of Oregon Wine country. This shoot was photographed in digital and medium format film which makes it extra unique.

From Kae & Ales… Anyone who has been to Oregon wine country knows the sheer beauty that is found in the lush, endless landscape. We were honored to take a peak at the new tasting room at Sokol Blosser Winery and fell in love with the natural elements that made the structure look as if it grew right out of the ground alongside the endless rows of grapevines.

With this editorial, we sought to capture that familiar feel of close friends and family coming together in celebration. A bride with a glass of wine in hand, embracing her guests and savoring the sweet moments of togetherness as the final rays of sun hide behind the rolling hills and the warmth of candlelight spills over the garnet-infused dinner table.

Handmade Rustic Barn Wedding

Brides-to-be, take note – when it comes to planning a meaningful, handcrafted affair, this Creswell, Oregon soiree is exactly how it’s done. Held at the bride’s grandparent’s cattle-barn-turned-wedding-venue, it’s a day that celebrates family in the loveliest of ways and the the bride’s sister, Bethany Small Photography, captured EVERY bit. Want even more? It’s all waiting right here.

From Bethany Small Photography… Bride Whitney and Groom Jonathan did nothing short of creating a dream wedding for their big day. It took months of preparation as any wedding does but this wedding was different.

Jonathan emphasized over and over again to Whitney how they should just elope and forget all the wedding madness. As the months began to draw nearer to the day of their union you would find Jonathan had changed his mind about the elopement. All he wanted was to make his bride’s dream come true! You could see this in the way he spent time handcrafting benches (he’s a carpenter) for their guests to sit on, transporting giant trees to fill the ceiling space in the barn, and recovering chairs for their guests to sit on as well.

All of these months of hard work were made possible because of the venue they decided to have their wedding at. The old barn that they had their wedding at was the bride’s dream venue! She had dreamed of getting married in her grandparent’s barn years before she met the guy she would marry. Once her grandpa passed away a few years ago she made the decision to honor him by getting married in his barn. The barn was transformed from a cattle barn to a full blown wedding venue with in a year!

Whitney and Jonathan chose to honor all their guests as bridesmaids and groomsmen instead of having a wedding party up front during the ceremony. Theses two have never been the type to follow trends, that’s why this wedding was so incredible to be a part of.

I had the honor of photographing this wedding not only as a job but as a sister of the bride! It could not have been a greater honor to have witnessed every moment of this day unfold!

Blush + Gold Ballroom Wedding

Ballroom weddings make me happy.  Maybe it’s the Cinderella-esque atmosphere and gorgeous traditional details that send my heart into a flurry… or maybe it’s just because they are so darn pretty. My guess?  It’s all of the above.  And when you feast your eyes on this gorgeous day from Blum Design In Flowers and Tara Francis Photography, you’ll see exactly what I mean.  Join me in the gallery for more.

From the Bride… The Elysian Ballroom was one of the first ballrooms we saw and went to look at. We fell in love with it and looked at a few more, but none could compare. It was decorated perfectly and was exactly what I expected my wedding to look like. Most important were the chiavari chairs. All of the decorations you saw were done by Mike and his wonderful team from the Elysian.

We lucked out on my shoes, because my mother-in-law found them at DSW, but they were the last ones and happened to be in my size. When Spenser called, they were out of stock, but miraculously got one back in stock a week later.

My wedding dress was the first one I tried on and my sister actually picked it out for me. I wasn’t sure if I liked it and kept looking, but none compared to mine. I eventually went back and tried it on and fell in love with it. Each time I tried it on I loved it more and more. I loved the fact that it was both white and ivory.

I wanted a formal look for my bridesmaid dresses, so I wanted a long sleeve look and a blush color. When we went to Nordstrom’s to look for dresses, these caught my eye immediately and were exactly what I was looking for.

The groomsmen were left up to my husband. He chose a more modern tux style that were trim fitting. He loves paisely so he picked the paisely tie and vest combination. And he thought it would be a good idea to have the ivory shirt for all the groomsmen with a black vest and tie and he would have the ivory shirt, tie and vest. It was a last minute decision while they were picking up their tuxes that they decided to do the wild socks for every guy in the wedding party, including the dads.

The wine was from Spenser’s dad’s good friend, Kirk Reuter, who owns his own winery in California called Ard Aven Winery. They brought two kinds of red, a syrah and a barbera. They also designed their own label from one of our engagement photos. From making to bottling to labeling, the wine was created for our wedding.

We used six bottles with a gold sharpie as our guest book. Guests used the pens to sign and write us a message wherever there was space on the bottles. Spenser used one of our engagement photographs to make the guestbook table sign from Vistaprint and bought the stand from Micheals.

One thing we added, that was actually an idea from out pastor, was the love box during the ceremony. Engraved on the box was our names and wedding date. Inside the box were notes we wrote to each other expressing our love, two glasses for wine (that say, “I do” and “I do too”) and a bottle of wine. There is a key that locks the box and the story behind it is you open the box if you are having a terrible fight, pour some wine, and read each other the notes. If you make it to your year anniversary then you open the box, pour the wine, read the notes, and write each other new ones for the year.

Jordan from Blum did all of the wonderful work on the flowers. She just looked at pictures I had on my Pinterest and took notes in a short meeting to come up with everything. She did a wonderful job.

Our DJ, John Ross was a referral from my sister. But we had also heard him and grabbed a CD from the Portland Bridal Show. Spenser took the time to listen and pick out all the songs.

Our party favors were XS energy drinks. We ordered tags from Vistaprint, hole punched the corner, and attached them with ribbon in bows.

The cake was from Wrightberry’s and was also done based on a short meeting to describe the color scheme. We took in a few pictures from Pinterest and she also had a few of her own ideas. The best part was getting to choose the flavors. It was a 4-tier cake. The bottom tier was german chocolate. The next was salted caramel. Followed by marionberry. And the top (which we got to take home!) was Reese’s Peanut Butter.

Elegant Lakeside Wedding at Black Butte Ranch

Today is a lesson in natural beauty captured in wedding form. The couple took the stunning Oregon locale and somehow managed to bottle up all the beauty that Mother Nature had put in place on the day and sprinkle it all over their beautiful wedding, all of which captured brilliantly by Altura Studio!

From the Altura Studio… Some things turn out even better than you hope they might. Heather and Aaron’s wedding at Black Butte Ranch was exactly like that. John and I both knew that the wedding would be lovely–Heather is so warm and kind and charming to photograph. Aaron is such a good guy: steady and present and head-over-heels about Heather. But what we didn’t expect, didn’t even know to hope for, was the enormous love and happiness that spilled out into this day. Family, parents, children, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends from near and friends from far –all wishing the best of love and life for Aaron and Heather as they said their vows under the trees. Everyone was so happy for them. Everyone was so happy with them. For a photographer, when a wedding feels that special, taking pictures feels like picking flowers.

The wedding day details were a pleasure to photograph. The mountain setting on its own is spectacular, but the pretty floral details added a special-day feeling. The aisles were decked with clusters of blue thistle. The groom’s boutonniere was a simple cluster of lavender flowers. The florist created delightful table arrangements, a variety of types including old fashioned roses in vintage tins, solo hydrangea flowers, grapes or other fruits, as well as wine corks and bottles as table numbers in a nod to the groom’s involvement in the wine industry.

After the ceremony guests toasted the couple with wines from Aaron’s vineyards. Instead of signing a traditional book, guests wrote their well wishes on a magnum-sized wine bottle. And as the evening turned golden, Aaron and Heather danced to “A Sunday Kind of Love.”

Urban Orchard Inspiration Shoot

Show me a day filled with fall hues, gorgeous blooms from Blum Design In Flowers and a sweets table that includes hot cocoa (my favorite) and I’ll show you a blogger that couldn’t be more pleased.  Because when it comes to insanely beautiful wedding inspiration, this crazy cool urban orchard shoot captured by Ashley Forrette is right up my alley.  Two words: seriously stunning.  See it all here.

From Blum Design In Flowers… Our “Urban Orchard” inspiration shoot took place at Urban Studio which is located in the center of Portland’s Pearl District. Fifteen years ago the Pearl District was a primarily industrial, partially abandoned area. Since then it has undergone a massive revival and is home to many condos, restaurants and boutiques. That combination of downtown chic and industrial made for a wonderful and completely blank slate for our imaginations to play with. The area also hosts a lot of hidden spots that are fantastic for portraits that our photographer, Ashley Forrette, was sure to utilize.

For the shoot we wanted to create a look that was classic and elegant while still maintaining a really warm, inviting and fun feel. We chose the colors of plum, apple red, peach and green as they’re both rich and a little whimsical.

In recent years Portland has developed a wonderful sense of locavore pride. So we wanted to make the most of what our area has to offer not only to show clients how to share it with guests in a slightly new way. Apples, wheat, herbs, and, of course, roses (in reference to Portland’s nickname, The City of Roses) were featured in the table centerpiece and personal flowers as a fairly subtle reference to area’s farming industry. We also created a dessert buffet that featured warm drinks in addition to the cake. Fresh pressed hot cider and hot cocoa with all of the fixings made a sweet accent to the table and also warm guests up. Last but not least, a smores pit made out of a repurposed wine barrel added a really fun photo op and sweet treat at the end of the shoot!

From the Bride… Our wedding was straight out of a fairytale. We got married on September 7th, 2013 and the day could not have been any more perfect. We chose our very good friend’s ranch as our wedding venue. The ceremony was in a large pasture and the reception was featured around a beautiful red barn. We always knew we wanted our wedding to be outside with a country feel. If you ask me what our theme for our wedding was, I would say Elegant Country. I wanted the day to be chic and classic, but with a country twist to it.

The arch at our ceremony was made specifically for our special day by our wonderful rental company, Eye Beam. I saw some inspiration on Pinterest and showed it to the guys and they told me they would absolutely make it happen. It turned out better than I could have imagined, they even added a chandelier (that worked!). As many brides know, it’s those little details that make the day so special. I am so thankful for the wonderful people who helped make my dreams a reality.

Andrew and I spray painted all of the centerpiece vases for the wedding. We spray painted all of them gold, and then took half of them and added glitter. This was my little way of adding a little bit of glam to the wedding! Andrew also had a hand in all the signs. We found old windows and spray painted them with chalkboard paint. He also put together the wood sign we used to let our guests know the timing of the day’s events.

My mom owns two wineries, Silvan Ridge Winery, where our Rehearsal Dinner was, and Elizabeth Chambers Cellar. We knew we wanted wine to play a special role in our wedding. We ended up using over 30 barrels spread out between the ceremony and reception and they were the perfect accent to our “Elegant Country” theme. We also had wine openers made as our gift to all our our guests to remember our day forever.

My Maid of Honor was my best friend from grade school, Madde. My other bridesmaids were my best friend from college, my little sister, and Andrew’s three girl cousins on his dad’s side. Andrew’s Best Man was his best friend and cousin, Nick. The rest of his Groomsmen were all very good friends!

Two days before our wedding was an absolute downpour. The ranch had gigantic puddles and we started to panic about what we would do if it continued to rain through our wedding day. I never gave up faith and though it was cloudy and cold the morning of our wedding day, it cleared up and turned out to be a gorgeous and warm summer day!

After the ceremony, we had a cocktail hour to keep guests busy while we took photos,. There were horse shoes and washers to keep our guests entertained. After the cocktail hour we had a wonderful meal from Billy Macs Catering. Then it went straight to dancing. Everyone had a wonderful time dancing the night away. So many people stayed until the very last minute, when they lit sparklers and helped us with our grand exit!

A little background on Andrew and I : Andrew and I met through mutual friends six years ago and were crazy about each other. Five years later, I was in my senior year of college and Andrew decided to propose. It was the PERFECT proposal. A good friend of ours is a photographer and Andrew had arranged for her to ask me if Andrew and I would model for a photography class she was taking. I of course said no problem we will meet you at the park after I get off work. We met at the park and she was taking pictures of us when she said “Ok I need to change my lens, hold on just a minute”. This is when Andrew pulled me aside and got down on one knee. Kathryn got the entire thing on camera! We then walked back to the car where a limo waiting to take us to a wonderful restaurant in town. All of our closest friends and family were there waiting to celebrate our proposal with us. Pretty perfect, huh?

Glamorous Gold Ballroom Wedding in Portland

When it comes to ballroom wedding, brides and grooms often have to work with backdrops that don’t fit their wedding day style to perfection. But that is definitely NOT the case with this ballroom celebration. This bride used an already gorg space and added her own dose of style and style and style for days. The result – with photos by Yvonne Wong – is wedding perfection. More right here!

From the bride…My husband and I met while I was in grad school at Boston College. We love the history and architecture of Boston and the campus so we knew we wanted a venue with those features. Finding that in Portland, Oregon where we live now was a little challenging but we found the Treasury Ballroom which was formerly the Federal Treasury building. The setting really lends itself to something glamorous and romantic which is completely our style.

My grandmother is Japanese so along with my mother and I, we folded 1000 paper cranes in a blush and gold palette to include in the decor to honor my heritage. The ceremony/head table backdrop that was created with these cranes was so incredible!

I included my new 13-year-old stepdaughter as a bridesmaid and I’ve never been big on matching dresses so it seemed to make the most sense to simply give my ladies a palette and let them find dresses they loved in their own styles. Since no two of us live in the same state I was a little worried about how it would come together but one the big day I thought it looked fantastic!

I’ve always loved flowers and I knew I wanted really amazing arrangements. Kim from Swoon Floral actually understood my loose yet elegant instructions and was great about incorporating the blooms I loved.

The food and wine were our biggest priorities. We paired our wines with the food and brought it in from a few of our favorite local Willamette Valley wineries. My husband was determined to have a champagne tower which really fit in with our theme well. My husband’s a total nerd at heart and I wanted to make sure the wedding was really him as well so I arranged a few surprises including a Star Wars themed groom’s cake, Death Star ice cubes and a Darth Vader helmet for some fun pics!

We wanted really intricate signs so when my mom suggested using the vinyl on mirrors we loved it! She designed and created program, bar and guest book mirrors which are now hanging in our apartment.

Originally our ceremony was supposed to be on the building’s rooftop however we had driving wind and rain so luckily Misty and her team were able to create a stunning space for the ceremony inside the ballroom. Everything came together so perfectly! Best.Day.Ever!

Classic Black + White Country Club Wedding

If you don’t like big, giant balloons, or cute as can be puppies or black and white stripes, well, I’ve got nothing for you, but I’m guessing there aren’t many of you (if any!) so we’re going to go ahead with this ridiculously beautiful wedding from Bridal Bliss + Ben Pigao, complete with, you guessed it, balloons, a puppy, and so many stripes!

From the stunning bride… Most brides say, “my wedding day should be the most ____ (insert generic adjective here) day of my life”. When I first sat down with my wedding planner I said, “my wedding day is the only wedding day of my life.” Our inspiration came from who Tyler and I are as a couple: sappy sentimental, country club chic meets charming comedian, gregarious golfer.

Our love bloomed in Sonoma, CA where the lush wine grapes and vineyards set up a perfect backdrop to fall in love. Eight years later; our love was ripe for the picking.

Tyler and I choose a venue where we currently reside in Portland, OR. Waverley Country Club was the home of Tyler’s parents wedding celebration (sentimental and country club chic – check.) Large crystal chandeliers accented gold décor and elegant crown molding ball rooms made for the perfect ambiance. The backdrop of the stately white mansion from 1896 is a prestigious golf course set along the Willamette River (gregarious golfer – check.) Romantic private bedrooms upstairs in the mansion meant the honeymoon suite was walking distance (charming comedian – check) and the extended, private drive into the club made for a grand entrance on its own.

The little details in the wedding were written in our programs for all guests to enjoy. My cousins rang bells to start our ceremony in loving memory of my late Grandmother. As a young girl, she would always tell me that when I got married she would be at the wedding, wearing bells. I drove up in a 1950’s Bentley with my father and descended down the aisle to “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder, the first song we danced to when I was five. I walked alongside my dad in my mother’s original wedding shoes (my something borrowed.) My Lazaro gown’s sash sparkled in the sun as I moved toward my groom; we had it custom made to include my late Aunt’s ten carat blue topaz (my something blue.) My elegant orchid bouquet was wrapped in my grandmother’s handkerchief that had been passed down six generations of weddings (something old.) The ceremony began, as did the happy tears through hand written vows. My wedding band is my Grandmother’s original wedding band from my Grandfather who married in 1953 (something new.) I could hear them tear up behind me as Tyler slipped it onto my finger. The recessional song was “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” by Stevie Wonder – mirroring the processional – resembled the first song that Ty and I danced to together.

After the ceremony, we floated upstairs taking to a private dinner for two; sixty minutes of uninterrupted time to take it all in as a couple. Our guests took to the garden courtyard below where champagne overflowed and small bites kept guests busy, tipsy and mingling. Next came hilarious and thoughtful toasts, dinner and cake cutting. The floral vases on our table scape were found by Tyler and I by milk-glass vase hunting during our 15- month engagement. “Drink Champagne and Dance on the Table” illuminated our dessert display, setting the tone for continuing our celebration. Our first dance was a complete surprise to me. I let Tyler pick out our song and melted when the band started singing and we danced for the first time as a married couple (Huey, Lewis and the News “Doing it All For My Baby”).

The little details exemplified the big details. Our band kept everyone dancing past midnight and for late night snacks the local, but nationally known, VooDoo Doughnut truck treated everyone to something sweet.

Through 3 generations, Tyler and I have witnessed 280 years of beautiful vows that have lasted through life’s challenges. The guest’s smiles, laughter, energy; the dance moves, the happy tears and multiple toasts will always mark the night we committed to carrying on the tradition of life-long marriage for both of our families. We say, cheers to that!

Mt. Hood, Oregon Engagement Session

I’ve seen a lot of engagement sessions in my day, but this one from ANIKO Productions has moved straight to the top of my favorites list. It’s just captured so beautifully I could cry, and it doesn’t hurt that the couple is drop dead gorgeous too. Throw in an adorable pooch, and well, I’m basically a goner. Long story short, I’m obsessed with this gallery of images.

From the ANIKO ProductionsRose and Michael requested a snowy engagement session, and with little snow in the Portland area this year we decided we would travel to Mt. Hood to even see snow. This is about a 90 minute drive from Portland. My assistant and I arrived a couple hours early to find locations. Government Camp was our first stop, and is where the majority of the photos were taken. We had to ask the locals where we might find a running river (Rose had her heart set on having a river in some of the photos). They directed us to the other side of the mountain. We were so stunned by how beautiful the river was and the mist rolled in just as we started photographing Rose and Michael. Rose was freezing in her dress and heels, but she says it was well worth it.

From the Bride…Michael and I have been together for a little over 6 years now. We grew up near each other in the same city, but we went to different high schools. We didn’t meet each other until we went off to college. Michael and I met in 2007 at Oregon State University in class. We were inseparable then and even till this day. We love spending time with each other, especially outdoor activities involving snow. That is one of the reasons we wanted a romantic wintery engagement session. Another reason is that you don’t see too many winter themed engagement photos. We really wanted our engagement photos to be unique and reflect our personalities. We are both really silly people and love a good laugh. And of course, we had to include our beloved pup, Wester.

The Proposal:
Michael proposed on our 6 year anniversary. I had no clue though, he had been planning it for a couple of months with his sisters and our close friends. He wrote them a long list of how he wanted everything done. He wanted them to decorate our home with bouquets of rose in mason jars, pink and red rose pedals all over the floor and candles everywhere. So after dinner at ringside to celebrate our 6th anniversary…I came home to a fully decorated home and a proposal. Shortly after everyone that helped decorated came out of no where. It was super sweet.

Rustic Wedding at Brasada Ranch

I’m just going to come right out and say it – this is bar none my favorite Oregon wedding I’ve ever come across. It’s the unexpected color palette alongside rich, well-balanced blooms – not to mention a few cameo appearances of a bulldog named BamBam along the way. Marina Koslow captured all the love behind this Brasada Ranch “I do,” and you better believe there’s much more right over here.

From Marina Koslow Photography… Brasada is a rustic golf course resort boasting of an incredible view of the Cascade mountains range, luxurious amenities and an equestrian center. It was a perfect spot for Elaine and Travis to say their vows and spoil their guests with breathtaking scenery.

Elaine chose rich burgundy colors as accents for her bridesmaids and flowers. Even their well mannered bulldog BamBam was made festive for the occasion with collar adornments.

A sweet outside ceremony was followed by reception and dancing at the resort’s barn. The night ended with a spectacular sunset as a special moment for the newlyweds.

Evergreen Winter Wedding Inspiration

It may be March, but New England is stuck in what feels like a perpetual state of winter. Then again, when you’re swooning a winter-loving shoot as gorgeous as this, embracing the cold doesn’t seems so bad. With frost-covered foliage and rustic driven details, Luxe Event Productions made this a winter bride’s dream-come-true. Find every snap from Hazelwood Photo tucked right here.

From Luxe Event Productions… Crisp cold winter air and foggy frost covered foliage have become our playground in the NW this season. Record dryness and fog have graced us with it’s chill since right after the holiday, craving for more frost, ice and snow the team at Luxe Event Production dreamed up a magical and Narnia-like winter wedding inspiration shoot to cure our need to be surrounded by powdery white snow. Since it doesn’t really snow much in the Valley of Portland, Oregon we trekked up to Mt. Hood to scout the perfect location that we could not only design a scene around but that would also bring to life our idea and theme: Winter Evergreen.

Think, dry crisp winter air, frosted pines and spruce, frozen ponds and abandon snow shacks -coupled with warmth and whimsy. Using very very little floral and just a cedar garland with nestled vintage garnet glass for the table, we set out to capture the magic that is winter. Cozy sherpa blankets, furs, ice skates and natural juniper stole the scene. From our custom designed wedding gown by Holly Stalder to our vintage ice shoes and rusty orbs this shoot was one for the books. We had so much fun in the snow (2 feet of it to be exact!). We found the perfect place nestled deep in the pines where we set the scene in front of an abandon snow shack which sat right in front of a frozen pond. The raw untouched beauty of our surroundings was a quintessential winterscape that had us reeling in it’s splendor for days after the shoot.

Using Classic Vintage Rentals Robert Farm Table we coupled it with their Franklin wood chairs and their Doyle folding wood bench. Winter cedar garland from Luxe Event Productions lay cold down the center of the table; adding warmth we snuggled amist the green Classic Vintage Rentals assorted brass candle sticks and Luxe Event Productions vintage garnet pedestal votives. Swoon Floral Design added a touch of fresh juniper and fluted gold chargers with classic white plates and settings allowed our cut crystal to be the glitz of the table -using specialty glassware is just one way to add a little originality to your design in a very cost-effective way. We were having so much fun we set two tablescapes, you’ll see that we swaped chargers for Classic Vintage Rentals gold rim plates and a beautiful winter floral arrangement from Swoon in the center. Huddled around the settings we added dry pine cones and raw wax candles, which was simple yet whimsical set atop natural wood.

Our other scene was set with a classic Champagne Bar, designed and styled by Luxe Event Productions. Inspired by the Plaza Hotel we used vintage glassware from Luxe Event Productions and Classic Vintage Rentals Weston Cabinet. Silver and brass champagne buckets, mirrored serving trays and a little bubbly stole the show once finished with Swoon Floral Design’s winter greens. Using Vintage Furniture like this cabinet is inexpensive but adds a ton of authenticity to your look. Consider adding elements like these next to your bar, as your dessert display and even altar.

What was set out to be just a couple hours ended up being an entire day of winter evergreen laden design. The combination of fire and ice and the mist from the frozen pond married with the glitz of a custom wedding gown and champagne bar led us to slumbers full of wintery dreams for the rest of the week.

Huge THANK YOU to all who participated in this idea with us. It was months in the making and we couldn’t be excited about how it turned out. Thank you, all of you for all your hard work and endless ideas.

From the Bride… I didn’t have my “dream wedding” envisioned going into our engagement, so every choice was somewhat unique. As a result, I spent a LOT of time in Joann Fabrics leading up to the big day, trying to piece together the little details. Overall, we wanted it to feel like a big party with all the most important people in our life. We wanted a modern speakeasy feel that wasn’t too stuffy or over-themed.

We had a huge DIY element – we handmade each table’s stylized table number, handstamped each guest giveaway bag and seating chart, bought old small stemware to hold candles on each table, my sisters and I assembled all the centerpieces, including hot gluing lace and twine to each mason jar vase. My husband also picked out a lot of old black and white photographs from the 20s/30s/40s, including a few of old Seattle and Port Townsend.

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue: The jeweled pins in my hair belonged to my deceased grandmother. Something New: Where to start! My dress, my shoes, my clutch, etc. etc. The pearl earrings I wore belong to my sister. And something Blue: the necklace I wore. My sister bought it for me from my stepmother’s gallery. It was seafoam green, white, and light blue pieces of reclaimed glass alongside pearls.

When we got engaged, the first thing we did was each make a list of the top five priorities for our wedding/honeymoon engagement. We agreed early on what these were and tried not to let the other things stress us out – not that they didn’t! We didn’t get into a single fight about wedding choices. We knew what was important and made compromises to get that to work out.

I’d also recommend planning your honeymoon for just as long as you’re planning your wedding. Too many people skip out on this, and it is a really cathartic escape after such a stressful time. When we listed our top five wedding priorities, honeymoon was at the top of the list. A wedding lasts one day, but our honeymoon was 9 days of just us, exploring new places together. To us that was way more important an experience, so we cut our 300 person wedding down to 50 and took a trip to Italy when it was all done.

Finally, put photography high on your list of priorities. Again, the wedding day itself lasts one day, but those pictures will last lifetimes. There’s one picture in particular that when I saw it, it reminded me of one I have of my grandparents on their wedding day. Your best wedding pictures are the types of heirlooms that your kids and grandkids will fight over. Spend the money.

Blush Pink Wedding at Hanley Farm

From the Bride… Our wedding took place at a historical Farm in Southern Oregon. I was going for a beautiful rustic romantic blush wedding. We incorporated blush and ivory as our primary colors. We used vintage and romantic decor to create the perfectly beautiful pallet for our romantic wedding.

The morning of the wedding it was pouring down rain. My wedding stylist called and notified me to my horror that we had to put up tents. I had dreamt of my beautiful reception area under the large oak trees with cafe lights strung about in a huge canopy. I was devastated by the weather. By the time I got in the model to to be driven down to my groom for our first look at the farm the weather had changed. The day was so romantic because of the rain in the morning and the sun came out right before the ceremony. It was as if God was shining down on us!

The ceremony was the most romantic piece of the entire wedding. We built free standing doors for the ceremony which took place underneath a beautiful canopy of trees at the end of the farm. A model T escorted my and my dad down to the ceremony and Jason Mraz’s song “I wont’ give up” played as the doors opened and I walked down the aisle to my future husband. The aisle was decorated with ivory flower petals. After we said I do, we ran away to our getaway car, the model T. My husband had a secret surprise for me!

My new husband surprised me by taking me to another location a beautiful gazebo away from the farm. As our guest enjoyed the cocktail hour we enjoyed a quite moment alone after our I do’s. He had written a letter to me that was so beautifully written I couldn’t believe he came up with it! We enjoyed a quite moment and celebrated with a glass of champagne.
