From the beautiful Bride… Mike and I met in the seventh grade, but it took twenty years for us to see each other as more than classmates. Through our middle and high school years in Florida, we shared many experiences and friends, but we never got to know each other well. After high school, we went in different directions; I studied at the University of Florida before moving to Austin and then Australia, while Mike attended TCU, played golf professionally and returned to Orlando. It was not until early 2012 that we were both living in the same place at the same time. We (individually) attended a mutual friend’s wedding that summer in Spokane, WA, and after talking, laughing and dancing all weekend, we came back to Orlando and started dating. Two happy years later, Mike popped the question!
From the start, we knew we wanted a destination wedding. We considered a few options that were special to one or the other of us, but Cashiers was the only location that was meaningful to us as a couple. My parents spend their summers in Cashiers, and it became our go-to spot for long weekend getaways. As luck would have it, they had taken us to Canyon Kitchen for dinner once before getting engaged, and we never stopped talking about its beauty and charm. It was the first and only place we contacted when we started to plan our North Carolina mountain wedding.
The pieces fell into place from there, starting with our wonderful event planner, Becca Stefan Knuth. She embraced our vision for a romantic, elegant and intimate affair, and went above and beyond to bring that to life. The concept for our wedding required a certain flow through the Lonesome Valley property, and three things were very important to us above all else. First, we wanted an outdoor ceremony, with the breathtaking mountain scenery surrounding us. We chose not to have a bridal party (just us, our niece, nephew and dog of honor), and the intimacy of the two of us framed by this spectacular backdrop made for a beautiful moment.
The second important piece, especially to me, was a seated dinner under an elegant tent, draped romantically in ivory and soft blush with chandeliers and lush flowers. In fact, my vision began with the look and feel of our dinner tent, and the rest of our decisions stemmed from there. Lastly, we wanted our guests to dance the night away to our band, Groovetown, and the open-air barn provided the perfect space. It also sheltered us from the rain, which fortunately held off until we were safely inside! Other details, like having a local artist paint the Lonesome Valley scenery on-site to serve as our ‘guestbook’ and late night to-go food for the shuttle ride home, were simply icing on the cake.
A unique aspect of our wedding was that we planned the entire event from a distance, but each and every person we worked with made the process absolutely seamless. Without exception, our vendors took the time to understand us as a couple, and made sure that our personalities came through in all details of our special day. Mike’s favorite moment of the night was during our ceremony, looking out at the scenery with friends and family gathered around, then finally seeing me make my way down the aisle toward him. For me, walking into our stunning tent and being introduced for the first time as husband and wife was a moment I’ll never forget. Our wedding was more than we ever envisioned it could be, and we both fondly look back on it as the best night of our lives.
From Asheville Event Co.… Lindsey and Mike were a joy to work with. They initially met in middle school and reconnected later at a friends wedding. When Lindsey first contacted us regarding her wedding we were thrilled to be a part of it as Canyon Kitchen at Lonesome Valley is one of our favorite venues. Lindsey had a pretty good idea of what she envisioned which included incorporating elegant touches into a rustic environment. Lindsey wanted her guests to feel as if they were transported to a place they have never been. It was also important that the ceremony and reception be in the same location so that guests could easily walk from the ceremony to the reception. From details, such as the custom printed materials – from Atheneum Creative, to gold chandeliers and gold chiavari chairs, there was an air of elegance and romance amidst the natural box canyon. We enlisted the team at Floressence Flowers to assist us in bringing her vision to life. With an assortment of lush arrangements in varying heights the floral decor was stunning and brought in the pink and blush colors that Lindsey was drawn to. Atheneum created a custom logo for the couple that we incorporated throughout the decor elements. We also hired an artist to paint the setting during the reception – capturing the stunning view and allowing the guests to sign the canvas and offer wishes to the couple – which now hangs in their new home. It was a wonderful experience getting to work with Lindsey + Mike and assisting them in bringing their wedding vision to life.
