Long Island Wedding at Martha Clara Vineyards by Patricia Kantzos Photography

Any family that has the tradition of creating a unique photo booth for each family member’s wedding day is pretty darn cute in my book! That alone can tell you that this next wedding by Patricia Kantzos has got soul. I absolutely love the feeling of a dinner party hidden away in a secret barn retreat and how darling are the pretty petals by Amy Febinger!?  Keep the party going by checking out the full gallery here.

From Patricia Kantzos PhotographyAlison and Matt were great to work with, and it was an honor to photograph their wedding. It was evident from when we first met they wanted their wedding to reflect their style while making sure their family and friends had fun. You can see from the images that this is a group that lives, loves and laughs. Both Alison and Matt are in creative fields, so I knew their wedding would have many special details. I LOVED all the flowers. Amy Febinger is so talented. Another of my favorite details was the photo booth. I was thrilled when they asked me to help them set this up. Alison, Matt and their friends have a tradition: for each wedding, they together design and construct a backdrop. I provided all the photography. The Adam and Eve backdrop was perfect.

Classic Staatsburg, New York Wedding from Gulnara Studio

We saw their rehearsal dinner this morning, and I am completely convinced if you were newly engaged today, and stumbled across our little blog in your frantic Google search of all things chic in the wide wedding world, this little soiree on the Hudson River would be the reason you would keep coming back to us. It’s Farmyard Chic if I’ve ever seen it, and seen through the lens of Gulnara Studio, it is an unbelievable mix of chickens and chignons, pigs and pretty, soft cheese cakes and sweet and scrumptious love. All I can say is – you better get your gallery on.

As we started to plan our wedding, we knew we didn’t want a New York City wedding as much as we loved living there.  We were hoping to find a place that was available in late summer that would provide our guests a bit of a getaway but that wasn’t a particularly far drive for our tri-state family and friends.  After narrowing it down to a few areas outside of NYC, the search began!  We toured many different places but none seemed to have the right feel.  Then, on our way home from a friend’s wedding in Lake George, we stopped to see a private estate.  We knew immediately it was everything we were looking for!  It was elegant, it was rustic, and the view over the Hudson River was breathtaking.  Combined with the working farm that spoke to the foodie in both of us, it all came together in such a unique and wonderful way.  It was the exact vision we were looking for yet were struggling to find.  We had hoped we could also find a place where we and our bridal party could stay the entire weekend given our top choice of late summer weekends was the Labor Day holiday.  The different houses on the estate provided us with the option to have everyone stay in one place and celebrate all weekend.  It ticked every box and we couldn’t stop grinning at each other as we toured the property, we knew this was it!

The estate provided us so much natural beauty and inspiration to work with.  The windows on the barn were so lovely and Nicola at Lettuce Paper masterfully helped me turn them into a pattern that we used throughout all the stationary for the wedding – envelope liners, custom stamps, menus, and even as a single flourish at times.  As I explored the colors that both Greg and I loved, a peacock theme emerged.  I loved the idea of the vibrant peacock palate against the neutral and natural colors of the estate, especially at that time of year.  Peacocks have a natural elegance which was the perfect complement to the estate.  My goal was to incorporate the colors and feather in various different ways so that it didn’t become monotonous or overwhelming.  Linda Baldwin, our amazing florist, was able to help me achieve this.  The colors in the flowers were stunning.  I loved the way the arrangements all came together yet remained unique as we did something slightly different for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception.  I particularly loved the mint which we used in the bridesmaids bouquets.   As we moved into the evening, the amazing lanterns that lined the path to the tent and also surrounded the pool provided a wonderful ambiance for a late summer wedding.

Overall, we wanted our wedding to capture the warmth and beauty around us – from both the setting and our family and friends – and to be a reflection of who we were.  As an interfaith couple, we worked to ensure our ceremony and the events of the day reflected each of our backgrounds.  We wanted our guests to feel relaxed and enjoy the entire day, so our goal was to have an evening that effortlessly flowed from start to finish, which it did thanks to our stellar wedding planner and caterer!  I can’t say enough about them both.  Most of all, we wanted our guests to feel as if they were all part of our new extended family!  So after a family style dinner that reflected our love of food and the region, the band took over and it was time to party….and that we did well into the evening, admittedly taking advantage of the pool for the after party!  It was the perfect day and every time I look at my favorite photo of us in front of the wall to wall dart board, I’m reminded of this!!

From the Bride… Aaron and I met in 1999 when I was a freshman and he was a senior in high school in our small hometown in upstate New York. We actually went to prom together as friends the following spring and then lost touch until around 2007, where we reconnected at the engagement party of mutual friends. We dated long distance for a few months until Aaron decided to join me in Connecticut. Fast forward three years to a vacation in Myrtle Beach when Aaron asked me to marry him on a moonlit beach walk where he had written the question in the sand.  I wish that one of us could remember the genuine heartfelt things he said, but in that intense of a moment (unless on camera), I don’t think any couple does! It was a ridiculously exciting time for us, and we absolutely could not wait to be husband and wife. As the year and a half of wedding planning began, we knew the most important aspect of that day was to be surrounded by all of our family and friends. In order to stay on budget with a large number of guests, we had to get creative and incorporate a lot of DIY ideas like our chalkboard signage and Mr. and Mrs. chair markers. I am an INCREDIBLY indecisive person (except when it came to choosing my dress), and Aaron really helped to keep me grounded, focus on what was important and tell me when the shades of purple in the bridesmaids’ shoe clips and clutches were “close enough.” The theme we went with was “Vintage Romance,” incorporating classic black and white with hints of purple, and we think that our vision came together flawlessly. Jenna St. Clair, a close childhood friend of mine, designed all of our stationery as well as the seating chart, and they couldn’t have set the theme any better. We used purple stained glass lanterns and books for our centerpieces and went with classic love story titles for the table names. We tried to embrace tradition, while at the same time adding our own unique and personal touches to the day. I used some of the lace and buttons from my late grandmother’s wedding gown to wrap around the stems of my bouquet, and we had pictures of family members who have passed away surrounding our guestbook. Our cardholder was an old suitcase that belonged to my grandparents’ neighbor who had been like another grandmother to my siblings, cousins and me. Our first dance was to a song from Aaron’s all-time favorite band, Better Than Ezra. We honeymooned in Puerto Vallarta because neither of us had ever been to Mexico. Aside from what went “wrong” or was flawed or did not go exactly according to plan that day, it didn’t matter. It was a day meant for us, our family, friends and our love — and because of that it was perfect. Looking back, we wouldn’t change a thing!

Staatsburg, New York Rehearsal Dinner from Gulnara Studio

Today we’ve got a real treat. We’re spending it with Rebecca + Greg, and their beautiful, beautiful wedding festivities. First up on the agenda is the simply elegant rehearsal dinner, captured by Gulnara Studio. We’re head over heels for this sweet soiree to kick off the love fest. And as much as we love the barn and the pool, the striped straws and the whiskey centerpieces, we love the couple at the center most. The relaxed love that seems to float between them is gorgeous. Spend your morning in the gallery… but make sure to come back this afternoon for the main event!

From the lovely bride … Growing up on the Jersey shore I visited New York City more than I can remember.  I’d loved it since I was a little girl so I always knew I’d end up there.  What I didn’t know is that my move to the big city after living in London for 3 years would also mean an introduction to my future husband!  After four years of dating and enjoying New York together, Greg asked me to marry him at one of our favorite restaurants in the city.  July 2010 was hot hot hot in New York and as I noted that I had to wear a cocktail ring on a different finger due to the heat, Greg pulled the ring I had been waiting for out of his pocket and said, “Well I hope this one will still fit!”

Central Park Engagement Session by G.E. Masana

I’m seriously in love with this couple! From the very first gorgeous image by G.E. Masana, you can tell that they are 1.) super-duper in love with one another and 2.) so glad their long distance relationship is finally over! And the sweet sentiment behind where the groom-to-be proposed has given me the chills. Click here for more!

From the Bride-to-Be… As undergraduate student athletes, we were champions competing at rival schools. Needless to say, we didn’t speak — ever. Our first encounter occurred when I drove from Boston to Albany to pick up my best friend Meghan who was visiting Jonathan with Larry, her then-boyfriend. Jonathan cracked a joke about speeding, and I replied with a smart remark. A few years later, we met again at the Dreams Resort in the Dominican Republic for Meghan and Larry’s wedding. During the trip, we took two pictures together and only had a single one-on-one conversation. Jonathan delayed my shuttle to the airport to make sure that he gave me his phone number. From August 12th on, we would talk on the phone for hours every day and began building our relationship as friends. Within a few months we were officially a long distance couple. Sustaining this type of relationship would have its challenges, nonetheless, it forced us to communicate openly and grow, both individually and as a couple. We’d arrange three-day weekends and meet in Albany, NY; Boston and Springfield, MA, every two to three weeks. After two years of long distance, I was accepted to Albany Law School and excited for the move.

From the Groom-to-Be… Before she moved here, I had spoken with both her family and mine to ask for their blessing. Everyone replied with a resounding YES! I custom designed her engagement ring in New York City to symbolize how special she is to me. On August 12, the date of our second anniversary and her moving day, I planned a detour at the state border to propose. The plan was to leave Boston with enough time to see the sun set at the peak of Mt. Summit, located on the border of New York and Massachusetts. But when we got there, we had just enough time to find a campsite before the sun set. I pulled out my pre-written engagement letter and began to read it to her. She started hyperventilating and repeatedly pushed her left hand in my face … no spoken response. Although she was speechless, we understood what that moment meant for both of us.

From the Couple… Since then, we have transitioned smoothly into this stage of our relationship and have begun planning our wedding. Still over a year away from the actual day, we have already taken engagement pictures in Central Park, New York City (by G.E Masana — AMAZING!). We are to be wed on our anniversary weekend next year.

Rochester Wedding at the Harro East Ballroom by T & S Hughes Photography

Every detail counts…And that’s obvious in this wedding by T&S Hughes Photography. My favorite weddings are all about the delicate, personal touches that embody the story of the bride and groom. With prohibition style mason jars, vintage fabrics from the bride’s great grandparent’s collection, splashes of lace and so many more … my heart could literally burst! Thankfully, there are even more details to swoon over in the gallery.

From the Bride… I loved the bouquets! My mom made them herself out of old fabrics from the Great Depression era that my great grandparents had given her, fabric from my baby room and fabrics from a flower girl dress I wore in a wedding when I was younger. There was also lace from my mother’s wedding dress, as well as the finishing touch — my “something borrowed,” which was a brooch my grandmother wore to my mom’s wedding.

I was so pleased with both venues, as I felt they really worked for our day and created the relaxed and vintage tone we were hoping for. The church is a little local church in Pittsford, New York, called St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran church. It was old clapboard with white picket fences and big red doors — very typical American for our English visitors to enjoy!  The church also hosted our “English Cream Tea” reception.  Our evening reception was in Harro East Ballroom in the city of Rochester, New York.  It was a lovely old theater auditorium from the 1920-30s with big tall ceilings and huge windows! The reception hostess there is lovely to work with as well, and everyone has commented on how delicious the buffet was! Alex and I would highly recommend them both.

My main hope was to go with a feel for our day that truly represented Alex and I as a couple. Alex and I wanted a relaxed and unique wedding day. We both really like eclectic and vintage style things and really enjoy going to antique shops! The typewriter, birdcage and old picture frame with our photos pinned in were all ideas that I found on Pinterest. The suitcases were pieces that I had used in my room growing up and are something that very much represents Alex and I, as we like to travel and are living abroad in England. The heart-shaped map cutouts were a tiny detail that I really loved, as I spent time picking out maps of places we’d both been to. The centerpieces were a work in progress and developed over time out of old wine bottles, jars and swirly, feather pieces. I felt that I really wanted to display details of Alex and me in our wedding decor, which we used with the American and English themes running throughout the day as well. We enjoyed putting it all together, and it was never work — it was fun and so many people helped us out along the way!

NYC Wedding at the Gramercy Park Hotel by Maggie Harkov

I’m just slightly obsessed with the Gramercy Park Hotel, so when this gorgeous wedding photographed by Maggie Harkov found its way to my inbox, I may have squealed out loud a little bit. Okay, maybe a lot. But how can you blame me? It’s pretty much the coolest place for a wedding. Brilliant Event Planning helped the couple infuse so many thoughtful details to honor their family members that could not make the long flights from overseas and paid special tribute to them through color and music. What a fabulous idea! Click here for more!

From the Bride… Having a wedding in New York City was our dream, after I moved here in the name of love from London! Although far more important to us was incorporating a real feeling of family, as we are both from overseas. We wanted an intimate and creative city wedding with an NY theme that would resonate with our out of town guests (as the majority had traveled from Asia and Europe). I had wanted to incorporate some unique touches into the day, and when I saw Bryn at Paperfinger’s hand-drawn, personalized designs for wedding stationery, I knew they would be the perfect fit for our day. We also wanted a pop of color on the black and white invitations (featuring Calvary Church and the Gramercy Park Hotel), so we had our names in purple and ordered save-the-dates featuring Lady Liberty from Wedding Paper Divas. Our dearest grandparents were unable to be there due to my husband being from Australia and me being from England, so I used a violet color scheme in honor of my Gran, Dulcie Violet, and also roses for Grandma Joscelyn Rose in the bouquets.”You are my sunshine” was played by the pianist and cellist, a childhood favourite song (Dulcie used to sing to me as a child) as my bridesmaids walked down the aisle.

The day was just amazing from start to finish for me, having hair and makeup done in our suite at the Gramercy with my bridesmaids, while wearing my bride t-shirt, is a favorite memory. They also thoughtfully put together a collage of funny photos of me, which calmed my nerves before walking down the aisle! One of the things I will never forget about the day was being presented with a huge book of photos and hand-written messages during my maid of honor’s speech about what I meant to each of my close friends. It was incredibly touching and something I will cherish forever.

We also had some amazing vendors that truly made our day go off without a hitch. We desperately needed a photographer who would capture the NY theme of our wedding and listen to our needs, so we were incredibly lucky to find Maggie Harkov, who captured the mood and energy of the day perfectly. For that dose of the unexpected, we hired a vintage NYC taxi cab from Film Cars. It was definitely one of the highlights of the day. The ’50s car was waiting outside the church as the guests flowed out, with a “Just Married” written on the back window and the Australian and English flags on either side. The twenty minutes we had on our own in the car driving around the city with people beeping and shouting congratulations to us was an experience I will never forget! It was also a part of the day that the two of us shared alone, which allowed us to really take in the fact that we were now married.

The celebration followed and to fully incorporate our New York theme, the DJ played famous NY songs (we also had a party hamper of purple and white boas and beads that we pulled out on the dance floor later), and our table names were all NYC landmarks that were special places to us. The chocolate favors were from Vosges because of the vibrant purple box, as well as this being our favorite neighborhood chocolate shop in SoHo. They even allowed us to put a special greeting note on each box also in violet! I also incorporated violet parasols for the bridesmaids and a white one for myself. For a creative touch, I ordered fun straws online from the paper diva, and I also designed match boxes and napkins with sayings I loved for the wedding embossed on these from “For Your Party.” It was a magical day we will never forget, celebrated with family and friends in our beloved New York City.

From Exquisite Affairs ProductionsKate and Matt were married on Saturday, March 31, at Bridgewaters in NYC’s historic South Street Seaport. They were fortunate enough to have their photo sessions outdoors, documenting the famous cobble-stone streets of the Downtown/Financial District before the rain came through. They had a traditional Jewish ceremony, officiated by Rabbi David Adelson, with 200 of their dearest friends and family in attendance. During the Hora, the bride surprised her groom with an appearance by his favorite baseball team’s mascot — Mr. Met. The guests danced the night away to hits like “You Make My Dreams Come True,” “She’s Got a Way” and “The Way You Look Tonight.” A classic New York wedding spotted with intimate toasts and speeches by the parents of both the bride and groom, their siblings and friends. Before guests hit the road, they were treated to hot pretzels in classic cart style.

New York Wedding at Creative Edge DIY Project Tutorials by A.a.B. Creates

We’ve been oohing and ahhing all afternoon thanks to this pretty little party that just happens to be the wedding of one of the talents behind A.a.B. Creates. It’s a New York stunner if we’ve ever seen one, and when we heard there were a few fabulous DIY’s involved, we OBVIOUSLY jumped at the chance to share them with you. So get out your notebook lovelies and get ready to jot down all the steps, these are must try DIY’s!

No-Sew Napkin Cuffs
Sometimes a table top would be enhanced by a finishing touch, and in this case, we needed a napkin ring. Not being able to find one that was pre-fab and perfect, AND having a spool of this amazing gold lace ribbon on hand that deserved to be showcased, I decided a couple nights before the wedding to create a napkin “cuff” from the lace.  Any kind of “open work” lace will do, and no sewing is required.

Materials
Scissors
“Open Work” Ribbon
Coordinating Cord (or Fishing Line)
Measuring Tape

Instructions
1. Each cuff needs about 3.5-4″ of ribbon.
2. Cut about 5″-6″ of cord per cuff. The length will depend on how much “tail” you want on your finish.
3. Wrap the ribbon around the napkin and, using the openings of the lace as “eyes”, weave your cord through the lace in a corset tie.
4. Finish it off with a bow, trim your finish, adjust the positioning of your cuff and flip into place.
Total time per cuff: About 3 minutes

“Brass” Critters
In lieu of table numbers, we used ornamental animals. Guests’ escort cards were rubber stamped with a golden animal that corresponded to “brass” animals on each table.  Since actual brass animals were hard to find, we instead bought a bunch of rubber animals online at The Jungle Store. This is a great idea that doesn’t need to be done with just BRASS animals or figurines. A high gloss paint in white could create a great “ceramic” effect, or, a great way to add a bright hue or neon to your table top.

Materials
Acrylic Metallic Paint (Available at Most Craft Stores)
Rubber Animal Figures
A Crafting Paint Brush
A Paper or Plastic Disposable Plate for Holding Paint

Instructions
Using your brush, completely coat your animal or figurine with a coat of your acrylic paint. Allow it to dry, and re-coat.

Hand-Sewn Ribbon Wall
A ribbon wall is a great way to either create a backdrop for something like your cake or escort card display (as we did for Mayra) OR to mask an ugly wall or area at your event venue. They are a little time-consuming to make when done by hand (without a machine), but well worth it.

Materials
For a 5′ wide piece of wall that hangs about 4′ high, you will need: 3 Spools of 100 yard ribbons (one of which should be a grosgrain)
4 Spools of 25 Yards of “specialty Ribbon”
20 yards of assorted “specialty” ribbons
Scissors
Needle and Thread
Fabric Glue

Instructions
1. Cut two pieces of Grosgrain ribbon as WIDE as you want your wall to be. Set one aside.
2. Cut your ribbons into lengths about as tall as you want your wall to be.  Cut them an organize them into like piles of ribbon to make “sorting” them easier.
3. Position your ribbon behind the “base” ribbon, and tack into place with a series of simple stitches.
4. When you are done attaching your ribbons, take your fabric glue and extra length of grosgrain ribbon.  Glue the extra piece over the messy stitching.

From Xochitl of A.a.B. CreatesWhen guests entered the dining room the first thing that they saw was the absolutely AMAZING cake the Betsy at Nine Cakes created. Mayra loves Gold and actually had been obsessed with a cake Betsy created for a photo shoot we did together that was featured on Style Me Pretty a couple of years ago. So for this, we told her to “Go Gold,” and she absolutely outdid herself. The ribbon wall we made with ribbons from Tinsel Trading, and all of the peach linens were made from fabrics we found at Mood. The space, usually a raw loft, was adorned with an amazing crystal chandelier and golden lights from Luminous Designs.  And the bar, the focus of the room at any great party, was decorated with the most amazing bar runner from Original Runner Co, who took the logo that Regas New York designed and turned it, literally, into gold.

For dinner we wanted to mix and marry rustic and glamour and chose to seat guests at three square farm tables with amazing golden and pearl overlays that we had made to showcase the wood of the tables. Not to take away from the delicacy of the linen, we went with an amazing clear ghost chair. Since there were only three tables (and 35 people including the amazing photographers), instead of table numbers, we decided to make table “animals.” There was a horse table (Mayra’s favorite animal), a buffalo table (Aja’s favorite food) and an elephant table (because elephants with upturned trunks are good luck). We found the animals online and painted them gold and then hand-stamped the escort cards with corresponding images. Our friend Margo collects and rents vintage French ceramics, and she offered to loan us some pieces for the wedding. Her collection of pitchers and cake stands seemed the perfect way to display the flowers and favors and Melanie of Melarosa created the most amazing sets of floral pieces for each table in the perfect range of peaches and orange. Mayra is a fruit addict, and it only seemed fitting to me that she have fruit around on her wedding day — and it was the perfect way to spread the orange hues around the room. Aja surprised Mayra by ordering wines from the Maldonado Vineyards in Napa, a vineyard they’d discovered last summer while out there, only to find it was owned by distant relatives of Mayra’s family. Guests dined on a Caprese salad duo and an out of this world braised short rib.

Once Aja and Mayra decided to have their tequila and taco party, they quickly realized they needed another invitation. Aja, who used to DJ, loved these old 45 shaped records Mayra found on Etsy, and they set the tone perfectly that this was going to be a good time. DJ JVC provided the tunes, and The Taco Truck outside of the venue was the biggest hit of the night.  At the end of the night, guests took home little packets of Mexican wedding cookies baked by Betsy at Nine Cakes and wrapped in different peach and gold quilting fabrics. A sweet end to an amazing day.

From Xochitl of A.a.B. CreatesThe greatest challenge when you design and plan weddings for a living is what to do when it’s time for you yourself to get married! So when Mayra’s boyfriend Aja proposed, after doing this for other couples for almost nine years, we had the exciting chance to plan a wedding of “our” own. Honestly, at first it was overwhelming trying to figure out the best way to bring together Mayra’s family from California and Aja’s family from upstate New York. Ultimately, they decided that everyone should get a chance to see what their lives are like, and a New York City Wedding was decided on. Initially, the thought was to keep it super small and only invite family (and me, of course) to a small ceremony and then a dinner, but after meeting with Carla Ruben at Creative Edge, they realized that,  as a couple, they enjoyed a good party too much to call it a night after dinner. So instead, they invited friends to join them for a tequila and taco party, and we all danced into the night.

On the day itself, Mayra and I got ready at The Standard Hotel while Aja got ready at Gild Hall. Dave met up with Aja to follow him around and because we always see our vendor “friends” when we’re on the other side of the day planning, it was fun to and relaxing to have Heather and Leslie come and hang out with us. Mayra and her family took some photos around the meatpacking district and the Highline before they got on the “family bus.” Then, because Mayra is a no-fuss kind of gal — we just hopped in a cab with Heather.

The ceremony was at St. Paul’s Chapel at Columbia, where Aja went to law school. Meredith and her team at Regas New York created an amazing letterpress invitation that had a belly band with the invitation language in Spanish. The Catholic ceremony was filled with traditions from both of their backgrounds. In honor of her Mexican roots, a Mariachi was playing when guests arrived, and they incorporated both the Laso and the exchange of coins, or Arras, in the ceremony. To close the ceremony they “jumped the broom,” which was made by Aja’s mother, following an African-American wedding tradition. Their rings were made by a relative of Mayra’s in California, and Mayra had Aja’s band engraved with one of their favorite Chaka Khan lyrics “I know you, I live you.” Following the ceremony we headed downtown to Creative Edge for cocktails and an intimate dinner. Cocktails were held in their Design Studio loft, with the amazing backdrop of cool culinary displays and cooking racks. Guests munched on amazing hors d’oeuvres, such as mini pulled pork sandwiches and adorable bite-sized tacos. The Mariachi played away, and the bride and her dad danced a traditional Mexican dance impromptu before dinner.

From Melissa of MLKL PhotographyThis styled shoot combines my passions for fashion and wedding photography. As a photographer, I don’t just shoot weddings, I help my brides source original, local pieces that will set their wedding and photos apart – all while telling the story of the places they love. It’s all about personalization. And in this shoot – it’s all about Brooklyn, the bride’s hometown. The bride gives a gentle nod to her home by exclusively featuring local designers in the most important elements of her day. And while her style may be simple, its a far cry from modest! Sparing no detail, the bride is embellished with shoes lending a pop of color — specially customized for this occasion with the addition of braided blush ribbon and strands of black gemstones. Her DIY bouquet was a kaleidoscope of flowers assembled from local Brooklyn markets. Her ring is a unique design from local artisans at Fitzgerald Jewelry. And best of all, she is adorned with a gown customized by a local master of exquisite wedding couture, Samuelle Couture. Everything was shot in Brooklyn’s beautiful Prospect Park this spring.

From the bride…Ramin and I met on Easter Sunday 2002 on a Metro North commuter train from New York City to New Haven, Connecticut. I was returning from Easter brunch with my family and Ramin was returning from the wedding of a close friend in Baltimore, Maryland.  Over the next 7 years, we remained friends and dated on and off until reuniting in May 2009. In January 2010, Ramin and I planned a trip to visit his mother who lived in San Francisco. Unbeknownst to me, Ramin also planned a surprise weekend in Napa Valley, California where he proposed.  We had spent several weekends on the Eastern end of Long Island, specifically Montauk and East Hampton the summer before our engagement. We loved the relaxed and down–to-earth feeling of the seaside towns.  We knew it was the perfect location for our big day.

From the Bride… We wanted our wedding to focus on family, friends, food, and fun. Will and I decided on our wedding date to honor my grandparent’s 61st wedding anniversary. It was a special year in preparation for our wedding since my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, and this truly gave her a reason to fight. With my Chinese/Italian background, and Will’s Brazilian/Peruvian background, we had family and friends flying from all over the world. We chose Brooklyn because it is where our love began a few years back. Brooklyn’s charm really helped create our day. Our ceremony took place at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in the heart of Brooklyn Heights. I got ready in our brownstone apartment two blocks away — our landlord’s daughter let us use her floor as well as ours. This was special to us since it was our first apartment together. We kept the wedding party small because we wanted it to be intimate, but included our closest friends by having them participate during the church ceremony. The most incredible part of our ceremony was watching my 85-year-old grandfather and 81-year-old grandmother renew their vows in front of 150 people. Looking back at our incredible pictures, I have something special to remember as my grandfather passed two and a half months later. He was truly my grandmother’s other half, and Will and I felt honored to share such a special day with them.

When planning, we used Style Me Pretty for ideas, and we both knew we wanted to use all things Brooklyn and help our neighborhood’s small business owners. We chose The Liberty Warehouse on Pier 41 in Red Hook because of its warehouse feel, incredible views of the Statue of Liberty, and of course the amazing chef. We tried to stick to our theme “Savory & Sweet” by using Steve’s Key Lime Pies and Brooklyn Brine’s Whiskey Sour Pickles as our favors. Ironically enough, Steve’s Key Lime Pies is on the same pier as Liberty Warehouse, at the entrance. With its wooden sign hanging crooked as you walk the pier, this just added to the warehouse feel that The Liberty Warehouse brings you. We love pickles and at 3 a.m. a few months prior to the wedding, I woke up with the idea and emailed Brooklyn Brine to see if they could work with us a do a mass order. They had never done it before and were extremely kind. It seemed to be a hit as I noticed people munching away into the wee hours of the night. One of the most memorable parts of our wedding was that my mother made my wedding gown and veil. Watching her make such an incredible piece of art was something that I will never forget. She put such love, patience and care into each ruffle she sewed on by hand. Our wedding was truly incredible. I remember our photographer taking Will and I outside for a few photos later in the evening. For those few minutes, I remember taking a breath and thinking of how lucky we both were to have such an amazing family and such wonderful friends.

English Garden Inspired Finger Lakes Wedding from Dave Robbins Photography

If two lovebirds meeting in London and falling in love over long walks in Regent’s Park is not the most butterflies-in-your-stomach romantic thing you’ve heard today, I don’t believe you. A dreamy start to a beautiful relationship blossomed into a fabulous, English Garden inspired Upstate New York Wedding. And with Dave Robbins Photography behind the lens, we are able to experience every sweet moment as if we were there toasting this lovely couple. It’s even sweeter in the gallery, if you can believe it!

My husband Ben and I met as graduate students in London and fell in love taking long walks through Regent’s Park and the East End. I wanted our wedding to feel like an English garden party – relaxed, intimate, and not too precious. We live in Brooklyn now and considered several New York City venues, but nothing felt like us. We finally moved our search upstate to Ithaca, where Ben went to college, and we found the ideal reception venue at the John Joseph Inn, a pastoral country inn run by a married couple who are known for an on-site restaurant that draws diners from throughout the Finger Lakes.

Beyond a beautiful venue and great food, finding a photographer to capture the day was incredibly important to us. I have too many friends who have been disappointed by their wedding photos, so I wanted to make sure we found a kindred spirit in both aesthetic and demeanor. I saw Dave Robbins’s work in New York Weddings magazine very early in the planning process and felt immediately he was the one for us, which was only confirmed when my husband and I met him in person. We spent nearly as much time with Dave on the big day as we did with each other, and his unflappable style really contributed to the vibe of our day. He also engineered a magical, only-on-your-wedding-day experience by finding a field of sunflowers and taking us there right after the ceremony. Frolicking in the sunflower field with my new husband was a moment I will never forget.

We had such fun assembling the details of our day, starting with my “something blue,” shoes that I found a month after our engagement and well before we even set a date. I loved their scroll design so much that I found wedding invitations from Sesame Letterpress that recalled them and then worked with Breck, the owner, to customize the ink colors to match the sash on my gown. My parents made a sign with our names that was constructed from barn board from my grandfather’s barn, and we found a wedding “log” on Etsy for our guests to sign in lieu of a guest book, which now hangs prominently in our home. For favors, we filled glass candy jars with classic British candies, which were a big hit – except for the flying saucers, which our 6-year-old guest Lucie said tasted like cardboard.

We kept a few plans to ourselves and had fun surprising our guests with a dance we’d learned for our first dance to Louis Armstrong’s version of “La Vie en Rose.” Then my dad and I caught everyone off guard with our fast father-daughter swing dance to an Elvis song. One surprise I hadn’t anticipated came during the reception when my aunt Valeria presented us with a handmade wedding quilt she had made. My aunt is an incredible quilter, but I never imagined she’d design and make something uniquely for us. We love our first family heirloom and were so touched to receive it during our celebration.

The best advice I heard and followed was to create a few quiet moments alone as a couple over the course of the day to take in the emotion. Ben and I first saw each other all dressed up in the orchard at the inn and then stepped away to read letters we’d written to each other. We also took a few minutes right after the ceremony and then again at the end of dinner before the light disappeared. As a result, our wedding day felt completely real to me, and I have vivid memories of those first heady, blissful moments as my husband’s wife.

Jaclyn and Tim share a love story ripped from the silver screen. The couple met on September 26, 2008 in LaGuardia Airport in New York. Tim, a Boston native turned New York resident, was flying to Washington D.C. to surprise his sister for her birthday. Jaclyn, a Jersey Girl who moved to the city to attend Barnard College at Columbia University, was headed down to the nation’s capital to visit friends. Tim’s flight was unexpectedly cancelled and he was moved to Jaclyn’s flight. The two struck up a conversation in the terminal lounge and the rest is history. Their New York relationship continued while they both lived in Upper East Side apartments only blocks from each other. Eventually, Tim proposed at rush hour in the middle of Grand Central Terminal, under the clock, on December 18, 2009, amidst the holiday hustle and bustle. For the next 11 months they planned a grand New York affair. The couple was married on November 6, 2010 and the entire evening exuded the timeless elegance of a bygone era.

Their ceremony was held at Christ Church on Park Avenue, presided over by the Reverend Fred Provencher of Cornerstone Christian Church in Wyckoff, NJ (the couple’s home church). The bride’s sisters shared their gifts and talents with the couple and their loved ones by singing the hymn “Be Thou My Vision,” arranged and accompanied by her brother. Finally, the Reverend Father Joseph McShane, President of Fordham University, Tim’s alma mater, shared a moving story of his personal relationship with the bride and groom. The scene at the church was reminiscent of a sepia toned photo – the inspiration for the bride’s rich fall color scheme. Her eight bridesmaids wore taffeta, Jim Hjelm, floor-length gowns in an iridescent copper-toned brown with black lace trim to match the groomsmen’s tuxedos. The flowers had an antique hue and the entire church was illuminated with candlelight.

Immediately following the ceremony, the couple and their wedding party trotted down Park Avenue to a symphony of congratulatory honking. The two were then whisked away in a vintage yellow cab that transported them to their reception. The reception was held at Cipriani on 42nd Street, directly across from Grand Central, where Tim proposed. A dramatic, black tie affair continued late into the evening complete with indulgent food, delicious wine, and a ton of dancing encouraged by the musical stylings of the Eric Marshall Band of Hank Lane Music. The space was warmly lit with amber tones and candles. The mother of the bride designed the table settings with sheer iridescent overlays and special ordered china that matched their fall color scheme. She even collected and hand-painted hundreds of acorns, which served as a bed for the escort cards. To keep with the classic New York theme, each table bore the name of an iconic New York landmark. The centerpieces were towering gold candelabras topped with a display of bold fall colored flowers. And cast upon the wall was a custom made drawing of a “B,” representing the couple’s last name, featuring an ornamental acorn which had been featured on their invitations and ceremony programs. The bride’s vision for the event was Old New York in the Fall. Cipriani, the refurbished Bowery Savings Bank from the 1920s, served as the perfect setting for this classic affair. The rich colors, the candelabras, and the towering five tier ivory butter cream cake completed the look to perfection.

From the Bride-to-Be… We met. We clicked. We fell in love. What can we say, life is beautiful! We share mutual passions for photography (you can check out our shots on my style blog), traveling, exploring New York, dining and fine wine, desserts (as many as possible!) and all things yoga. For our shoot with Ayenia Nour, we chose Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for its beautiful backdrops and tranquil vibe. We haven’t had shots together, so it was a real treat to do some boo-blissing in front of the lens. On our way to grab some pizza at Grimaldi’s, we walked by a carousel and Ayenia began snapping photos of us. It was the perfect, unplanned moment. We want to thank Ayenia for our lovely photos!

From the Bride… Elie and I both wanted a short engagement, which meant we only had about six months to plan once we got engaged. Despite having a very traditional Jewish Orthodox wedding, we still wanted to play around on the margins a bit and incorporate as many of our own details into the day as possible. We were incredibly lucky to find amazing vendors in such a short amount of time — especially Ulysses and Jenni at Ulysses Photography, who we found through Style Me Pretty!

Early on, we had found a picture of a Ketubah with the Hebrew calligraphy intertwined, and we used this as the inspiration for our invitations. I loved the idea of our names becoming one to symbolize the start of our marriage. I also loved the font and color palette on the label of one of Elie’s favorite brands of scotch – The Singleton,  so we used that in addition to an old Hebrew font. I designed the invitation suite, which included a map highlighting milestones in our relationship — our first date, where we were engaged and the location of the wedding. We also decided to wax seal each envelope, which was a time-consuming task but well worth it. The suite was then letter pressed by the wonderful people at Boxcar Press. Once the invitations were completed, the rest of the theme of the wedding fell into place. My mother painted the flowers, which were used as the backdrop on the table numbers, and Elie wrote the program, which I designed the cover for. We also created signs for all of the bars and the sign-in table and hand-wrote all of the escort cards.

As a fashion designer, I was also very particular about my dress and veil. I ending up adding a custom lace beaded trim to the hem and train of my gown (which led to sequins all over the living room floor the week before the wedding!). I also created my veil after having the same beaded trim added to a very long piece of tulle. Sensing that this would be one of the very few opportunities Elie would ever have to wear a morning suit, he insisted that he and the groomsmen wear them. In order to match the groomsmen, all of the bridesmaids were in floor-length gowns. I wanted them to look more like a bouquet of beautiful flowers instead of all wearing the same dress, so I designed each of them their own skirt based on their specific likes and personalities. I am amazed with how beautifully everything came out. We love looking back on our photos and seeing all of the special details that we were able to incorporate.
