Hudson Valley Wedding from Cappy Hotchkiss Photography

Cappy Hotchkiss Photography is filling our screens with the prettiest of pink-hued weddings today, and let me just say, I am rather thrilled about it. Thrilled because it’s overflowing with details so gorgeous I want to hug them and blooms by Green Cottage so pretty I could cry. Thrilled because with just one look at this pretty party, I feel like I know this couple…and I want to be their bestie. There is just so much to raise your glasses (or coffee mugs) to floating around this sweet fête, and you can see it all right here.

From Cappy Hotchkiss PhotographyThis beautiful wedding was filled with lots of pink details. From hearts to frills, this pretty wedding was very feminine but not over the top. The florals were just amazing! Hand-embroidered welcome signs were made by friends, and all the friends and family made the pies, cakes, cookies, meringue and other desserts. The couple’s first dance was to Iz’s version of “Somewhere over the Rainbow.” During the cocktail hour, they practiced inside the barn, and when it was time, the doors opened to all the guests outside and there they were, dancing under big paper lanterns in the middle of the barn. He wore a straw hat and they played lawn games during the cocktail hour with a local ukelele duo playing. Laura works at Nanette Lapore and also makes her own fabulous iced cookies, which were included in the gift bag, along with individual tiny jams that they made. They live in Brooklyn but love to go to farmers’ markets and discovered High Falls when they visited the area to go apple picking. Fruit was a constant theme throughout the wedding with cherries and peaches overflowing out of fruit crates and the centerpieces. Laura also scoured sites such as eBay to find old books, which the florist used in the centerpieces.

From Ulysses PhotographyThis stylish wedding had an all-white theme with just a touch of blue, which blended perfectly with the deep blue skies that served as a backdrop to their fairytale castle wedding. Their florals were overflowing with several varieties of huge white flowers, and the bridal bouquet was especially lovely in its simplicity with its sweet white peonies. The rose garden adjacent to the castle was at the height of blooming and was the perfect setting for romantic photos. Their sunny, outdoor wedding on this perfect summer day was followed by cocktail hour on the porch of the castle, then hours of dancing under the tent. We enjoyed every moment with this darling couple!

And a sweet film from Well Spun Weddings to brighten your day even more.  Enjoy!

From the Bride… Arle and I knew almost immediately that the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens was the perfect setting for our wedding. We both envisioned an outdoor ceremony that was somewhat traditional but also relaxed.  A large weeping willow tree was the perfect backdrop for our ceremony, and in case of rain, a nearby greenhouse would have provided an excellent backup location. Nothing could be more beautiful than having cocktails near the lily ponds at sunset and then watching dusk turn to evening through the stunning glass dome of the Palm House.

Our wedding was really about culture and family.  My mother is Greek and my father is Jewish; Arle is Dominican and Cuban. Family traveled to Brooklyn from as far away as Greece and the Dominican Republic to be with us. We wanted to incorporate traditions from both of our cultures into our day. During the ceremony, we did the “Stephana” or crowning ceremony and included Spanish translations in our program. The first dance at the reception was a traditional Greek dance with throwing of money (to represent wealth for the new couple), followed by being lifted on chairs during the hora (in the Jewish tradition), followed by a salsa/merengue. My mother and her sisters baked traditional Greek pastries that were given out for dessert, and gave out koufeta (jordan almonds) in traditional pouches of five to represent happiness, health, wealth, children and long life for the new couple. Our favor was a DIY bottle of Greek olive oil with a label reading “Thank you” in Greek, Spanish and English.

A few weeks before the wedding, we hosted a “Greek night” at my parents’ house, where we taught our non-Greek friends and family how to do the traditional dances. One of my favorite parts of the wedding was seeing everyone — Greeks and non-Greeks — holding hands, dancing the traditional dances together. Also, seeing my in-laws go up in the chairs during the hora was a moment I will never forget. Maggie Harkov’s photos captured every guest laughing and smiling during these wonderful moments. Arle and I joked that the theme of our wedding was “look good/feel good,” knowing that this was the best way to ensure a fun party. The bridesmaids and groomsman were “instructed” to wear whatever they wanted — no color, length, or style required. We had some guests in tuxedos and some in jeans. It was more important to us that everyone feel comfortable and have fun than to enforce a specific dress code.

Like everyone will tell you, the day goes by incredibly quickly. Don’t forget to be present in the moment, look around and have some fun! Your wedding day is the day you join your life with your partner’s, so if the flowers wilt or your dress gets dirty, try to keep your sense of humor about it and remember why you are really there in the first place — to celebrate your love and your marriage!

From Lindsay Madden PhotographyNew York City is a really special place to have a wedding because it’s filled with so much culture, excitement and attitude. Jessica and Andrew opted to celebrate their special day at the Manhattan Penthouse, right in the heart of Union Square and steps away from Washington Square Park and the West Village. The Manhattan Penthouse is a chic and modern venue that provides views of the Empire State Building and Union Square.

Their ceremony took place at the lovely Our Lady of Pompeii Church, and Andrew’s parents surprised Jessica and Andrew with a barbershop quartet to perform for their guests as they exited the church. New York City makes my heart happy, and I love nothing more than using this fabulous city as a backdrop for photos. Therefore, we held their portraits in the West Village near the super cute Cherry Lane Theater and Washington Square Park. Jessica and Andrew’s reception was an awesome party! W Floral Design decorated the space with simple white linens and candles. Jessica created the table numbers herself. The atmosphere felt warm once the candles were lit, and everyone partied well into the night thanks to BTL DJS.

Jessica looked stunning in her dress, and Andrew looked handsome in his tuxedo. It was NYC black tie elegance all the way! The bridesmaids looked chic in their varied little black dresses. They got to pick their own from wherever they chose, and this definitely allowed for their personalities to shine through. Jessica and Andrew smiled and laughed throughout the entire day, and I was lucky enough to capture their beautiful wedding!

The Plaza Photo Shoot from Carmen Santorelli Photography

When a group of New York’s finest vendors team up to create a drop-dead gorgeous inspiration shoot at The Plaza, magic happens.  Plain and simple.  And when that team of vendors includes the genius stylings of Stacie Shea Events, breathtaking blooms by Splendid Stems and some of the prettiest paper goods you will ever see from Ten Four Paper, well.  It’s magic times one million.  All captured in devastatingly beautiful images by Carmen Santorelli Photography, this, my friends, is what we call photo shoot perfection.  See it all here.

Click here for the FULL photo shoot!

From Carmen Santorelli PhotographyThis styled shoot encompasses all the glamour and elegance that any girl has ever dreamed of. We first picked our location, the ever-fabulous Plaza Hotel in NYC, which set the tone for the whole story. Stacie and I tried to create our own fairy tale with just the right amount of sparkle, opulence and romance. The breathtaking Ines di Santo gowns (Neige and Amour), gracefully provided by Bridal Reflections, were the perfect mix of dramatic and romantic. Erica Ogawa did her magic with the makeup and hair. Karen of Splendid Stems took our breath away with the most amazing floral designs. She used hydrangea, anemones, orchids, astilbe, bunny tail celosia, oak ivy and spirea branches. The linens were so opulent that she did not want to compete with them, but instead enhance them with modern, free-form elegance that included some old world romance to celebrate the historic Plaza Hotel. Ten Four Paper created the invitations and all of the paper items, and Jessica Haley’s spectacular calligraphy work makes us wish we had her talent.

Sugar Flower Cake Shop created all of cake and desserts, and we were blown away by the beauty and deliciousness of her creations. For the main wedding cake, they wanted to create a contrast between the softness of the pink/peach/cream flowers and the bronze tones of the sugar decor, while maintaining an overall opulence within a clean and simple design. Even though the main cake they used for the shoot was faux, they envisioned it to be an almond cake, layered with strawberry purée and cream filling, iced with our lemon buttercream. To continue the pink and copper color scheme, they used a lot of almond and raspberry in the dessert table. It helps that July and August are the height of raspberry season here in New York! There are a few other fresh berries sprinkled in for contrast. All of our berries came from the Union Square greenmarket.

From the Bride… Larry and I first met in a college math class in February 2001. Through our matchmaking friends, we got set up and have been together since. A couple of months after our 10-year anniversary, Larry proposed to me during our long-overdue first couple’s trip to Moab, Utah. On our final day there, we went on a sunset bus tour at the Arches National Park. Our tour guide brought us to a spot called “The Garden of Eden” where she had me climb up and perch myself on top of a rock overlooking the sunset. The scenery was amazing! Later, she situated herself on a rock down below and to my surprise, whipped out her flute and started to play a melody. At that very moment, I heard Larry’s voice and saw him kneeling on the rock beside me, about to propose. It was definitely a memorable trip.

We’re not the type of couple who are into planning events. For that reason, planning our wedding was one of the hardest things for us to do. Our vision was for a non-traditional, fun atmosphere with close family and friends while incorporating our love of biking. We chose our vendors in hopes they would help make our vision a reality. We settled on a color story of gray, yellow and teal. Gray is my absolute favorite color. Being that I’m an ovarian cancer survivor, yellow was for LIVESTRONG, and teal was for ovarian cancer awareness. The three colors worked perfectly for our spring wedding. When searching for our venue, we wanted an environment to be fun, down-to-earth and have an urban vibe. reBar in Brooklyn, New York was just the place. It’s a large gastropub with its own movie theater called reRun. It also has several rooms that gave us the freedom to be creative. The main space transitioned from our wedding ceremony to a dance floor. In reRun, we easily used the movie theater atmosphere to set up a candy buffet and played our wedding slideshow. In a room called Lowrider, we had a fun photo booth with our DIY superhero-themed props. We wanted our guests to explore and experience a wedding in true Nida and Larry fashion, which reBar helped us execute perfectly. To capture our day, we had our talented photographers from CLY Creation. They took pictures for my sister’s wedding a couple of years back, so I knew their quality of work. As expected, they were great to work with and took so many beautiful pictures of our wedding. They certainly have an eye for creativity.

Throughout the wedding planning, we focused on staying true to who we were as individuals and as a couple. Most importantly, we tried to have fun with the whole experience. Many thanks to our family, friends and vendors who helped us fit the pieces to our wedding like a beautiful puzzle.

From the Bride… Joon and I met in 2005 at the University of Michigan at the ripe age of 20. We got engaged on May 14, 2011. We had been dating for a little over six years, and our engagement took place in what was then our dream home state: California. Given how long we had been dating, our vision of what we wanted for our wedding was very much aligned — a casual, outdoor, rustic wedding that would be an unforgettably fun weekend of celebrations for our friends and family. After browsing the myriad of wedding blogs online, I came upon Apple Barn Farm through a Style Me Pretty post. It was the very first and only venue we visited, and we knew immediately that we had found the perfect location.

With a year left until our big day, Joon and I spent much of our time during the next few months coming up with 101 DIY projects that we wanted to complete for our big day. We enjoyed this part the most, because let’s face it — talking about what you want to do is frankly much easier than actually doing it. We wanted a wedding that was unique to us and our tastes, and we were determined to leave our personal imprints on every component of our wedding. Our only mistake was that we neglected to do any of these projects until two weeks prior to the wedding. Thankfully, as a teacher on summer break and with Joon’s flexible time off from work, we were able to work night and day in creating most every decorative and paper item from scratch. I would say that those two weeks, while definitely stressful at times, were some of the most fun parts of planning our wedding. Laughing about our individual preferences on paper folding styles and having debates on the best way to tie a ribbon on a glass jars reminded us that enduring such “labor” was only possible and bearable because we were together — We were doing it for a day that would mark the start of our life together as husband and wife.

The wedding weekend ended up being what can only be described as absolute perfection. On Friday night, we kicked off a post-rehearsal dinner gathering with friends and family at our guest house near the venue. Saturday, June 23 presented itself as the most beautiful summer day we have ever witnessed — not a cloud in the sky — even though there was a thunder storm in a town 10 minutes away from the venue where many of our guests were staying. Working with Matthew of CLY as our photographers made the day even more enjoyable. Watching his genuine enthusiasm and excitement over our venue and DIY pieces made us feel not only special, but also appreciated. Our outdoor ceremony went off without a hitch, and during cocktail hour guests were able to enjoy hors d’oeuvres while also feeding carrots to horses. The reception took place inside the barn, and our guests were able to enjoy what was deemed as “the best wedding food ever,” made by Renner’s Creative Cuisine. The evening of food, drinks, desserts and dancing was capped off by a bonfire with s’mores. We were also able to keep the celebrations going on Sunday morning by hosting a brunch at our guest house. During this time, Joon and I realized that while our hard work definitely paid off in creating the details of the wedding, none of it would have been possible without the help of our family and friends who supported us throughout the whole process. We loved absolutely every component of our wedding weekend and would not do anything differently. Except maybe starting our DIY projects a little earlier. :)

Long Island City Wedding at The Foundry from CLY Creation

Just one look at this Bride’s face as she made her way down the aisle to meet her Groom was all I needed to fall head over heels in love with fête at The Foundry. It’s a priceless moment captured so beautifully by CLY Creation I can barely stand it. Those moments get me every.single.time. It shouldn’t be a surprise that the rest of the wedding is equally as beautiful – from the blooms to the cake and everything in between, and it’s all waiting for you with open arms right here.

The couple met in front of Butler Library eight years ago when they were attending Columbia University. The groom stood by the bride’s side when her mother suddenly passed way two years into their relationship, and she stood by his side when he was pulling all-nighters and working weekends while he was working as an investment banker. The groom proposed to the bride by the fountain in Lincoln Center in March 2011 and took the bride to Per Se for dinner to celebrate their engagement and surprised the bride by throwing a party afterwards surrounded by their friends. Soon after, the couple started searching for the perfect venue and the bride did not like any venues that they looked at in Manhattan. They wanted an intimate wedding of no more than 100 guests but did not want a crammed space. The groom suggested the Foundry, and they booked the venue on the spot.

This wedding was a perfect DIY project for the bride and the bridesmaids. The bride chose ivory and lavender shades and later added pale pink and dove gray. The bride’s friend carefully designed the invitations and edited programs and menu cards from a DIY website. The bridal party and the bride’s friends spent hours tying ribbons on the programs and menu cards. The “Bride and Groom” sign also was a DIY job. At the bride’s request, one of the bride’s close friends made gorgeous copper wire stands for the table number cards. The wedding favors, mini doughnuts, were carefully put in open window, eco-friendly, brown boxes.

The couple did not hire a wedding planner or a day-of coordinator. They gave a detailed schedule to the wedding party and their vendors, and the groom stepped in on the day of the wedding to create a hiccup-free wedding. The couple worked with Larry from Stortz Lighting to create the breathtaking chandeliers that would seamlessly blend in with rustic brick walls and transform the place into a romantic venue. The bride worked with Larry every step of the way to create the chandeliers, and they were able to transform the raw, rustic Foundry into a timelessly romantic wedding venue. The bride and her bridesmaids carefully selected all the furniture and table tops, from the metal finished rustic tables to unpolished silverware to further create the rustic and romantic atmosphere. For the floral design, the bride chose cream and lavender. A family friend created the centerpieces and bouquets using seasonal spring flowers such as peony, lilac and ranunculus. Cherry blossom branches were placed on each side of the altar during the ceremony. Strings of white orchids were carefully hung on the big floor to ceiling windows of the main hall, the greenhouse and also on the fire place in the greenhouse. After the dinner in the main hall, the couple had their cake-cutting ceremony in the greenhouse. Their wedding cake, a green tea cake with raspberry buttercream topped off with white fondant, was created by Silk Cakes. Followed by the cake-cutting, the groom surprised the bride by serenading her. The couple ordered Laudree macaroons and Chikalicious’ petit fours in addition to cupcakes to create a yummy dessert station. The wedding came to an end when Korilla food truck came. The bride wanted a perfect hangover food for her guests. The guests enjoyed the Korean-style burritos and tacos.

Brooklyn Wedding at MyMoon from Monika Broz

Okay two things I’m certain of right at this very moment: 1. This wedding is beyond beautiful, we’re talking super gorg and 2. That French bulldog is the handsomest furry friend I ever did see. I know you’ll agree with me on both accounts once you feast your eyes on this pretty images by Monika Broz. The couple chose MyMoon in Brooklyn because of it’s eclectic vibe and I must admit, it’s pretty amazing, like possibly my new all time fave. Check out even more here!

From the Bride… We initially wanted a destination wedding, but we realized many of our friends and family would not be able join us if we did, so we decided to try to find a location at home in New York City. We didn’t want our wedding to feel like everyone else’s but finding a location in NYC that was unique and affordable was a harder challenge than we first expected. Through research online and searching through countless blogs we discovered a few locations in Williamsburg that might fit the bill. Upon visiting My Moon, we knew immediately this was where we wanted to get married. It was a former boiler room of a factory and has such chic industrial look like nothing we had ever seen before. Instead of fighting with the theme, we embraced it and created our wedding vision to be the exotics with a Moroccan/Spanish influence. I had visited the Alhambra in Spain and fell in love with its design and felt My Moon could serve as our destination wedding in our own backyard. In addition to giving a nod to my Spanish heritage. We could have all of our loved ones join us and still feel like they were going some where exotic.

Since our inspiration was set, our colors were born out of that: ivory, teal, fuchsia, saffron and gold. We wanted our wedding to feel romantic but have an edge of sexiness to it, so incorporating bold exotic colors helped to dial that up. Since our inspiration was pretty specific, we had a hard time finding invitations that conveyed the look/feel we were going for without feeling too “themed.” So I reached out to a friend from high school who had started her own invitation company. She knew immediately what we were looking for and introduced us to the Moroccan quatrefoil design, which we wound up using throughout our wedding. We knew we did not want traditional flowers, but we were also on a budget and needed to find someone who would be willing to work with us on creating and making our vision come to life. We found Tashi and Bobo, and it was the best decision we made. They allowed us to do a lot of it ourselves and then they pulled together all the pieces to create the cohesive theme. My mother and I searched through Home Goods, Marshall’s, Pier One and Ebay collecting unique vases, glassware,  and lanterns to help establish the Moroccan theme further. For our flowers, we selected bright colors and interesting textures for colorful centerpieces and lots of mini arrangements. Tashi and Bobo custom made gold toned silk table runners which really made the arrangements pop off of the rustic dark wood farm tables. The clash of dark rustic wood, vibrant colors and textures was just beautiful.

For the ceremony we wanted to get married under something, and our florist had the idea of making a structure and decorating it with metallic circles and hanging blooms so when the wind blew the gold metallic circles would flutter/glitter. We also hung jars and unique vessels and filled them with unique flowers like giant thistles to make an impact and aid in the exotic feeling around the perimeter of the ceremony space. For our card table, our florist used a bed of carnations in our rich colors for us to place our cards upon. We printed our own menus on flat bracket paper from Paper Presentation and printed the quatrefoil design on them. My father did the calligraphy for place cards, and again, we printed the quatrefoil design on them. For the ceremony, it was important to us to have a live musician, and what better way than to have a Spanish guitar playing? He played more traditional music at the ceremony, and then at the cocktail hour he played the Spanish guitar. We had black and white photos from all the generations before us on their wedding days set up in Moroccan frames to honor our families and the tradition of marriage. Instead of a traditional guest book, we created a book with My Publisher featuring a timeline of our relationship from our first date through our engagement shoot and all of the adventures we have been on. We now have a very cool coffee table book where our guest gave lots of advice and shared all of their love with us.

A passion for art and creativity brought these two together when Anthony had a “crazy” idea of opening “a cafe in which patrons could pay a monthly fee for unlimited coffee in an artsy milieu.” Together they founded Fair Folks & a Goat, and from there, their love story began.

These two tied the knot at the Pratt House, which is one of my favorite venues to shoot. Their wedding was a true reflection of them — sophistication without the fuss. Anthony and his groomsmen decided to get ready at his apartment and rolled up to St. Patrick’s Cathedral on a MTA bus. See what I mean by no fuss? Meanwhile, Aurora and her girls got ready at the Palace overlooking the church. Aurora looked beyond gorgeous in her perfect Vera Wang gown and edgy Valentino shoes.

It was a hot, humid day, but that did not stop the excitement. It was so obvious that everyone in attendance loved these two deeply. The day was rich with laughter and ended with a joyous party.

NYC Wedding at Bottino Restaurant from Pickles and Pies

Sometimes, it’s the quietest of moments. The sweetest of sentiments. The simplest of celebrations…that make for the most beautiful weddings on Style Me Pretty. And this New York City wedding, photographed to utter perfection by Sean Kim, is nothing short of lovely. And who would have thought that it was a budget friendly affair with details, touches and style for days tucked into each and every corner by Pickles and Pies. This, my lovelies, is pure pretty. Click here to see much more.

From Pickles and Pies The wedding of Romney Piamonte and Rick Walburn had so many personal touches, and it was one of the smallest budgets I have seen in awhile (for NYC). It started at $7,000, but we spent around $10,000. We got really creative, crafted almost everything and called friends to lend a hand. Rick and Romney are both creative people — Romney was a professional stage actor and singer, now turned dentist, while Rick plays in the orchestra for various Broadway shows. They had strong inclinations and opinions as to what they wanted, just no idea how to execute or fully realize them under such tight budgetary constraints.

The ceremony, cocktails and lunch were held at Bottino Restaurant in Chelsea, NYC. It is a tiny space, so creating a different and appropriate setting for each was a challenge. Romney handmade the table runners, and together we crafted about 70 white yarn balls by hand with Elmer’s glue, yarn and mini beach balls for the decor. The succulents were purchased off the internet in bulk, and we hit up New York’s Flower District for the rest of the flowers, which I put together. Since most of the budget was going toward food and drinks, I needed to find ways to personalize the wedding at a low cost. So I created a “logo” for the couple and put it EVERYWHERE! I custom designed and made the menus to be stylish and personal. The couple really didn’t want a traditional guest book, so we created “Anniversary Jars” for years 1, 5, and 10 and asked the guests to leave a note or wish in them that wouldn’t be opened until that specified anniversary. I think the BEST personal touch were the favors. Romney commissioned a friend who is an artist to make a cartoon photo of Rick, Romney, and their adorable dachsund, Hans. Romney had the art printed at Staples, then covered 75 chocolate bars he bought at an outlet store. Speaking of Hans … he was missed. Because the wedding was in a restaurant, he was not allowed in, so Hans was found in “doll form” which became the ring pillow.

The ceremony was performed by friends, which made it so special. The grooms were walked down the aisle by their mothers, and Romney’s nephew was the ring bearer. After the ceremony, I had made a video of a collection of photos the grooms gave me of their life together that I projected on the wall in the cocktail room, which started playing right as they were making their way down the aisle. It was sentimental to the couple, but a treat for the guests and family. The surprise of the wedding was when Romney sang to Rick with the help of a friend on guitar. He sang a beautiful song in Tagalog (Filipino) because while Rick has heard Romney’s beautiful voice many times, he had never sung a song just to him. Not a dry eye in the house. Sean Kim was the perfect photographer for this day. He started at The Dream Hotel Downtown, where the couple decided to stay for their wedding weekend, and followed the grooms all the way to their wedding. I think he truly captured the excitement and love this couple has on the way to their ceremony together. I feel this wedding was everything it should be. Full of love, full of style and low on cost.

Like almost every other woman, I spent years dreaming up my idea of the most beautiful wedding I could imagine. I often joke that I had my wedding completely planned before I even met Matt. While there were definite positives in being that prepared for my idea of the perfect wedding day, there was one major flaw: where was Matt in my perfect day? I realized quickly that this was his day just as much as it was mine (and my mother’s!), and I wanted him to be more than just a prop at the end of the altar. While my idea of the perfect wedding was elegant and classical, Matt had something more laid back and fun in mind.

We chose to have the wedding at Sleepy Hollow Country Club, and decided to go with very traditional details such as our beautiful flowers and wedding canopy. Having such a grand venue, however, quickly made our wedding take on the “stuffy” feel that Matt was against. To help the mansion keep its elegant feel while also representing our fun side, we made our own table numbers. While at first look they appeared very elegant, a closer look would prove that they were anything but. Matt and I are huge fans of Seinfeld, so we decided to name each of the tables after an episode of Seinfeld that we both love and include a synopsis of that episode on the number card.

We are also big baseball fans – Matt is a diehard Yankee fan, and I’m a Mets fan from birth. Our bridal party of 16 was exactly split in their fandom, as well: eight Yankee fans and eight Met fans. As part of our wedding gift, we gave each of them a jersey representing their team and a baseball bat engraved with our names & wedding date. At our reception, everyone in the bridal party donned their team’s jersey with bat in hand and made an arch as they were introduced to our band’s rendition of “Take Me out to the Ball Game.” Matt and I wore our own personalized jerseys that read “Bride” and “Groom” as we ran thru the archway of bats. To continue the baseball theme, I surprised Matt with a very untraditional wedding cake made of two boxing gloves on top of a baseball diamond – one decorated with a Yankees logo & one with that of the Mets. We also had two signature drinks, “The Met” and “The Yankee.”

We had a Photo Booth set up just outside the dance floor in a further attempt to make the day more fun. This was a big hit and made for a great guest album. We also wanted to encourage people to be out on the dance floor, so we had Troupe 212, swing dance performers , come and perform two dances. Troupe 212 then got our guests out on the dance floor and taught them to swing dance like the pros. Finally, this last detail will forever be a favorite of mine; Months before our wedding, our videographer filmed a ten-minute video of Matt and I telling the story of how we met & how Matt proposed. This was edited to include illustrative pictures and video clips that corresponded with our story as each of us remembered it. We played it just before our first dance, and it added such a great feel to our day. I’ve watched it ten times and it still makes me cry.

Looking back on our wedding day, it was perfect in every way. It had the formal, elegant feel I wanted, but was fun and represented us as a couple. The pictures of our wedding day by our photographers, Ulysses Photography, still take my breath away. Most days I look at my wedding pictures, and it really feels like a dream (as cliché as that sounds). We can’t thank all of our vendors enough, as it wouldn’t have been the perfect day that it was without each of them. It’s hard to believe that a day so perfect could happen outside of the movies.

From the Bride… Mike and I met in college, and we really got to know one another after I asked him to tutor me. I could tell right away that he was sweet on me, but he was too much of a gentleman to ask me out until the end of the semester. Just a few months after that, Mike graduated and moved five hours away. We knew we had something special, so we continued our relationship long-distance for the next two years until I graduated and moved to Rochester with Mike. A few years later, I had almost given up on Mike ever proposing, so I was completely surprised when he did! We were on a trip to Hawaii, and Mike suggested that we go snorkeling at sunrise in an old volcanic crater called Hanauma Bay. There were so many colorful fish and coral that it was like swimming in an aquarium. We even saw sea turtles! I thought Mike was leading me to see another turtle, but when I swam over to him, he pulled out a ring underwater! I had to surface and pull off my snorkel to say yes! It never occurred to Mike that he could have lost the ring in the ocean until after we came back and told people the story.

When it came to planning the wedding, Mike and I really wanted a personalized, memorable event for our guests. Since both of our families live in different states from us, we wanted to choose a location that our guests could make into a get-away vacation. We chose Glenora because of the beautiful view and great location in the Finger Lakes. We wanted the wedding to have a slightly rustic, vintage, romantic feel that drew on the natural beauty of the lake and vineyard. I’ve always had a thing for antiques and colored glass, but it was a real family affair to pull the wedding together. The tables were decorated with my stepmother’s lifetime collection of depression glass. We found the blue mason jars when my aunt saw an ad in the newspaper from a farmer cleaning out his barn. My mom sewed all of the burlap table runners herself, and another aunt made our cakes. Mike and I were both avid readers growing up, so I purchased vintage copies of some of our favorite children’s fiction and used the books as table names. I also commissioned a custom mason jar stamp with our initials and wedding date from Etsy to use as our unofficial monogram and repeated the theme of “L&M’ throughout the wedding, including the moss-covered letters I made for the ceremony. We wanted our ceremony to really reflect “us” so we chose to incorporate a wine capsule — we selected a bottle of wine to drink on our first, fifth, and tenth anniversaries and wrote letters to our future selves to seal in with the wine. Neither of us is big on public speaking, so these letters suited us perfectly. Plus, it was kind of fun to hammer a nail in my wedding dress!

One of my favorite moments was my dance with my dad. We started out dancing to “Tiny Dancer” by Elton John, which despite being a good song, does not have a lot of meaning to us. Then after a few minutes, our band faded into my Dad’s absolute favorite song, “Taking Care of Business” by Bachman Turner Overdrive. The look of surprise on his face was priceless! We had such a great time dancing that I don’t think the smile left my dad’s face for the rest of the night. Mike and I spent a lot of time during our engagement collecting and crafting to create a meaningful event, but it was all worth it when Mike said to me during the last slow song, “Could today have been more perfect?” It was an amazing day filled with fun, friends, and family, and we felt so surrounded by love.

From the Bride… When MJ and I got engaged, we weren’t sure what we wanted our wedding to look like. We didn’t know how traditional we wanted the day to be, and we were torn between a destination wedding (we loved the shared experience of the destination weddings we had been to) and a New York wedding. Once we started scoping out venues though, we fell in love with the idea of getting married in New York, since every other important moment in our relationship had occurred in the city. We met while at NYU, fell in love here and had been building our lives here in the seven years since.

And because we got married in New York, we were able to incorporate places important to us throughout the weekend. We had our rehearsal dinner at the restaurant where we had our first real date (we were in college, so by the time this “date” occurred, we had been dating for a while). And on Saturday, after the wedding was over, we school-bused our guests to Finnerty’s, our favorite college bar, for an after-party of kegs and New York pizza. As for the wedding venue, once we stepped onto the roof of Bryant Park Grill, we decided it would be the perfect place to exchange vows, surrounded on all sides by the city we love. We found most of our other vendors from Style Me Pretty weddings based in New York (even our DJ) and New York Magazine’s vendor section. We loved all our vendors and feel like we really lucked out to have such great people help make our day so special. We also felt like getting married in New York gave us the opportunity to find extremely talented but affordable vendors, and we hope to pay it forward so that other people can discover them, use them and love them like we did on our big day.

We had a non-traditional wedding party and ceremony. MJ got his guys the same green tie and asked them to wear a dark suit they already owned. I got coordinating green jewelery for my girls and told them to wear any dress they wanted.  They all looked great, and we can’t take any credit for it! My brother-in-law married us and did an amazing job, and it was so comforting to have someone who’s known us throughout our relationship marry us. We wanted predominantly candid photos to capture the day, and were so amazed with how many great shots Bartosz was able to get. Bartosz shot my sister’s wedding in Greece a few years ago, and after seeing their photos, he was definitely our top choice to photograph the wedding. After looking around a little in New York, we realized it was comparable to have him come from Poland to shoot the wedding, and it was the best choice we made. His energy throughout the weekend and the pictures he shot well exceeded our wildest dreams.

Finding ways to incorporate “us” into the wedding details was definitely my favorite part of planning. Some of the smallest details and crafts were the least expensive things we did, and we got tons of positive feedback on them during and after the wedding. I made petal holders out of New York subway maps so that our guests could shower us with petals after the ceremony, and because we were getting married in the shadow of the library, I spray-painted a couple old steel card catalogs to use for the escort cards MJ made. Our entrance song and cake cutting song were tributes to MJ’s favorite team, the New York Giants, and we incorporated the Giants into a few other details throughout the wedding, including our vows.

From the Bride… Part of my initial intrigue with Nick (my now-husband!) was how he had this way about him that just made all of the good things in life fall right into his lap. He’s a really great person, and I guess it’s to be expected that good things would come to him. I think that once we got engaged and started planning our wedding, I inherited some of that luck as well! Our first break was when we walked into the Park Savoy Estate. We were welcomed with open arms, and it was as if the staff had known us forever. We loved the place, but there was a catch — they were renovating the entire inside, top to bottom in the winter. We wanted to get married the next spring. With a roll of the dice, we decided to go with it, and what a great decision we made. The estate was everything i could have dreamed of for our wedding. We wanted our guests to feel as though they were walking into our home, warm and cozy but ever so classic.

Next up: the dress! I went shopping with my mom, aunt and grandmother. I knew the first dress I tried on was the one, and better yet, my incredible consultant at the shop told me that not only was I in love with the dress, but SHE had designed it. It was part of her first collection as a new designer, and I couldn’t be more proud to support such a wonderful and talented woman. The rest of the day’s details were also important. I wanted our wedding to feel like us, not commercial. We decided to go for a classic vintage feel in soft neutral tones. We were determined to have a hand in everything at our wedding so that we knew the day was truly ours, and we did it. One of my bridesmaids’ mother’s found a ton of vintage hankies for me to use, my mom and aunt helped to gather vintage mirrored trays for the place card table, and my mother-in-law stopped at nothing to gather all of the mercury glass she could get her hands on. It was truly a labor of love, and it was worth every minute. I designed a small “road map” of our love together, which started and has continued in our town of Hoboken. We even made a donation to the animal rescue foundation who rescued our loving dog, Mason, (pretty much our first child!). We bought a font and designed every piece of beautiful paper, from the invitations to place cards. Nick and I worked with a budget and by doing, so we were able to focus on what was most important to us.

The day was literally a dream. We were surrounded by so much love, it was almost as if there was a density in the room. My best advice for brides planning their day is to keep it simple. It can become overwhelming with the amount of ideas out there, but at the end of the day, your wedding should be about the two of you. I am so happy that Nick and I decided to take on all that we did — it was a lot of hard work, but it’s something we will forever take pride in. By personally planning every detail, it was also a time for both of our families to become closer and really share in the entire wedding process. I have so many fond memories of the entire journey leading up to our wedding day, and I will keep them forever. Enjoy the process, and most of all, be thankful that such a lucky man has entered into your life and swept you off your feet.

NYC Wedding at Tribeca Rooftop from Mademoiselle Fiona

Rooftop weddings have one MAJOR advantage over all others and it goes by the name of holy gorgeous views. Honestly, you cannot beat a sunset ceremony overlooking the skyline of New York; especially when that sunset and accompanying wedding are so beautifully captured by Mademoiselle Fiona. It’s one breathtaking image after another showcasing a pastel infused shindig with lovely florals by SPINA and a Tribeca Rooftop backdrop that dreams are made of. See so much more of that gorgeous view right here.

From the Bride… Thinking back on June 10th, 2012, always makes my heart smile. It was truly a perfect wedding and the perfect day for us. It wasn’t perfect because everything went according to plan — in fact, there were quite a lot of hiccups along the way. But the day turned out perfectly because everyone had so much fun, and it was the happiest day for Tony and me. The entire day was relaxed and comfortable — from eating deli sandwiches on the floor with the wedding party before the wedding to running down the stairs with Tony as Mr. and Mrs. Chow, Tony and I were able to enjoy every second of our day.

Before the wedding, Tony and I had our “first look” on cobblestone streets — and after that, we just walked around Tribeca (and got black tar all over on my dress!) while our most talented photographer, Fiona, took photos. Just as we were wrapping up the outdoor portraits, the skies turned completely gray and raindrops started to fall! Somehow, the sky cleared up right before the ceremony and held onto the rain until after the cocktail hour… I am still amazed and extremely thankful for the beautiful sunset we had on the roof! The night flew by as expected — and I have to say my favorite part of my wedding day was being able to see, hug, and do crazy dances with my favorite people! Tony always says it’s a shame that only during weddings can families and friends from all over the world get together and celebrate — but we are SO thankful to have our day to celebrate with everyone we love (in the most beautiful dress I own!)

As for the wedding planning process… let’s just say that you CAN begin your first year of law school AND plan a wedding that rocks! Whenever I was too stressed out about school to plan the wedding, Tony took over and reassured me that every little detail would be taken care of (thankfully, Tony is a film producer and was great with the vendors, who were all incredible to work with). I am so happy to have these beautiful photos to remind us of every little detail and emotion of the day!

Sal and I met in a dance class in 2005. His 2 sisters and I had been taking dance classes together at the same studio for 20+ yrs. When my teacher decided that she wanted 3 guys to be part of a dance we were choreographing, Sal was recruited by his sister. His job was primarily to sit on a stool while I danced around him. When Sal later asked his sisters about me, their response was simply “stay away from my friend”. A year would pass before we would see each other at a dance competition where Sal came to cheer on his sisters (and secretly me I would later come to find out). He hung out and joked around all afternoon with the girls and in the evening when the competition was over I said goodbye to my “dance partner”. It wasn’t until our 3rd chance meeting, celebrating a mutual friends birthday at a bar, that Sal asked me for my number.

The song by the way that we danced to together in that dance class was Fever by Peggy Lee. I knew I wanted to incorporate the song somehow in the wedding so I had the DJ play Fever during our cake cutting ceremony.

Sal and I don’t get many days off together, so when we do we tend to sleep in a bit. Early one morning I could tell Sal hadn’t been sleeping and when I rolled over to see if he was ok he said very casually “Can I ask you a question. Will you marry me.” This had been a question he had asked me jokingly around the house for months now and my answer was always “sure”. So I casually said “sure” and rolled over to go back to bed. He said ” No I’m serious. Will you marry me”. I rolled over again to find him holding a ring that had been under his pillow all night. I cried and said “sure”.

Our first thought was to get married in Cape Cod where I vacationed every summer as a kid and a place that Sal has come to love as well, but as much as we loved it, the thought of having a destination wedding was a little overwhelming to me. The only real request that Sal had was to get married in a church so we chose to get married at our local church. Sal and I made colorful felt flags that read YAY! for our friends and family to wave outside the church. It was the only place I chose to used bright colors. I tried to keep everything else very neutral.

We wanted to invest more in the things we felt were most important like our photographs and save in other areas like our invitations. A friend from work who is a graphic designer helped me design the invitations. I had a local printer print them and I bought matching envelopes at a paper supply store. It saved me hundreds of dollars.

I tried to keep the bridal party small but it felt like Sal kept adding guys every week. We ended up with 6 groomsmen. To keep on the simple theme we told them to just wear any black suit and white shirt they had and Sal bought them all matching ties and pocket squares. To stand out a little bit Sal bought a navy suit instead of black.

Since I only had a matron of honor and one flower girl,I chose to buy simple dresses from J.Crew. I loved my wedding dress but what I really loved were my shoes. They were a simple pair of nude shoes that I bought for $50 dollars and they were so comfortable that I danced in them all night long. I wanted a nude color so I could wear them again after the wedding.

I knew I wanted to keep the reception real simple and intimate and when we came across the Bernards Inn we fell in love with it. It was quaint and elegant with lots of character. With beautiful chandeliers and a fun black and white dance floor, I didn’t have to do much to decorate the room.

I wanted the center of the tables to look like a runner of flowers so I had 6 low square vases down the middle. I made sure to have low flower vases so my guests could talk to the person across from them not just the person next to them.

Since we had decided not to have our wedding in Cape Cod, we thought we would bring a little bit of the Cape to our guests. We got salt water taffy from our favorite taffy stand in the Cape and we put them in glass bowls near the bars and photo booth. Our guests loved snacking on taffy throughout the night.

I loved my cake. The Inn has an amazing in house pastry chef. I showed him a picture of this rustic looking cake that I saw in a magazine (it was Hillary Duff’s wedding cake) and he replicated it perfectly. I just loved the fresh flowers and the exposed layers and the fact that it wasn’t the typical sea of white fondant.

No matter how long you take to plan your wedding, whether it’s 6 months like I did or 2 years, there is one thing you cannot plan on and that is the weather. Sal and I were suppose to get married on August 27th 2011. That weekend we got an uninvited guest named Hurricane Irene!

I am a pretty easy going person and had embraced the fact that I would be one of those brides with rain on their big day. I even went out and bought rain boots to wear with my wedding dress thinking it would look cute in pictures. It didn’t really dawn on me that I might have to postpone the whole day until my venders starting calling me the day before asking me if I had a backup plan. I did not have a backup plan.

When my planner at the Bernards Inn said we could postpone the event to a future date considering the circumstances, we agreed. We were very lucky to be able to have the wedding the following weekend on September 4th.

Sal and I live in a flood zone area and we were told we should evacuate for the hurricane. After finishing all our phone calls and texts to inform everyone about the change of plans, we spent what should have been our wedding night drinking coffee and watching reruns of Monk at my parents house knowing we made the right choice.

Since we had to postpone the wedding day the number of guests changed as well. Guests who had planned to attend now couldn’t make the new date and some who thought they were going to miss the big day now could attend. Since our seating plans had to be rearranged, Sal and I did a last minute DIY project of handmade seating cards.

For me, one of my favorite moments was seeing Sal tear up as he watched me walk down the aisle. My other favorite moment when when Sal and I were having our first dance. Towards the end of the song, the DJ invited everyone up to join us on the dance floor. Since the song was about to end I thought no one would bother. But when I looked around the room, not one person was sitting. We were surrounded on the dance floor by all our loved ones who had supported us through that crazy week and who rearranged their schedules in order to share in our special day with us. It truly was a special moment.

From the Bride… My husband Stephen and I are from the Syracuse area and met when we were 11, became best friends at 14, and started dating when we were 16. Now we live in New York City, where I work in book publishing and he is a Physician Assistant student. But we chose to have our wedding back in beautiful Central New York, where almost our entire family still lives, and where our story began. We were married on May 12, 2012, on a beautiful spring day in Skaneateles, New York, a small town in the Finger Lakes region.

Our style was a bit vintage, a bit romantic and a bit whimsical, and we incorporated quite a bit of DIY into our day. My mom, aunt and I made all of the peach and strawberry jam for our favors the summer before the wedding, which was definitely a labor of love! We attached our seating cards to mason jars so our guests could grab a cold lemonade or iced tea along with their seat assignment. My mother-in-law and step-father-in-law found the beautiful birch branch that we hung from the rafters at the lodge, and my mom and I tied ribbons to it to create a backdrop for the ceremony. For the centerpieces, we collected vintage books and white pitchers. It was very important to me to feel like my sister, Paige, was part of our day, as she died of leukemia when we were children. I had our florist sew her locket onto the handle of my bouquet, and she created an arrangement for the ceremony with the flowers that my two Maids of Honor carried. I love that when we look back on these pictures in the years to come, we’ll remember all of the people who made so many personal details come to life on our wedding day.

Our wedding was such a celebration of our longtime love and our families officially coming together, and we were told by many that it was the most joyful, meaningful ceremony they had ever attended. Though we loved and labored over our handcrafted details, that was the most wonderful thing to hear. After the ceremony, we celebrated with a dance party of epic proportions, including a dance contest with a modest cash prize that our friend Jack, a talented gymnast, won with a crazy back flip! Our wedding party was fantastic, too; many of them were childhood and high school friends that we had both been friends with for years, and everyone involved truly has supported both of us individually and as a couple through the years. With such amazing friends and family, we couldn’t help but have a beautiful day!
