Oheka Castle Wedding from Robert & Kathleen Photographers

If it gets any prettier than this Oheka Castle wedding from Robert & Kathleen Photographers, I’m not sure how. Sixpence For Your Shoe pulled together a soiree that is fit for an impossibly beautiful romance, pulled in Jennie Fresa to accentuate that love, and the finished product has me, for lack of any other word that would remotely fit here, giddy. This is the kind of wedding I LOVE.

From the photographers… Jess and Dan met as students in medical school and somehow found time to form a solid relationship in the midst of studying, residency, and starting their careers.  When it came time for their wedding, they knew that they wanted an elegant, majestic place that would set the tone for their wedding weekend.  Oheka Castle provided the perfect setting for their ceremony and reception.

New York City Essex House Wedding from Maggie Harkov

Some wedding simply take my breath away. Where I literally gasp at the prettiness I get to share. This is just such a wedding. Elegant and classic, it’s the epitome of the perfectly timeless affair. And it doesn’t hurt that the gorgeous images from Maggie Harkov will most definitely stand the test of time. It’s gorgeous from start to finish, and it’s all ready for you to devour right here.

From the Bride… I’ve been told that I have an “old soul”. I truly appreciate the classics, I love to hear the history behind things and have a real love for anything vintage. Old movies, music, clothing…I love it! My husband on the other hand, thrives on modernization and technology. Together, I truly feel, we’re the perfect mix. We’re a healthy balance of old and new, much like the city where we met and fell in love. We met my freshmen year of college in New York and from then on I always knew that I wanted to be married in the city that ended up brining us together.

We both lead extremely hectic lives, so I knew before we even began the planning process that I would need some help along the way. We ended up hiring a wedding planner, Richard Newton from Atelier Weddings. This turned out to be one of the best decisions we made in our planning process. He listened to our needs and wants and tried to gain a true understanding of our vision for the big day. In short, we wanted our special day to properly represent us as a couple; we wanted it to be the perfect mix of old and new. Above everything else, we wanted our guests to have an absolute blast! With these things in mind, we found our venue, The Essex House. It screams classic New York, with its art deco design and vicinity to the one and only Central Park…it was love at first site. Then we were introduced to Marilyn and team at Belle Fleur in New York, who instantly grasped what we wanted for our reception. I think I only needed to say two words to her “light” and “romantic”…and they really took it from there. Next was the entertainment and as I mentioned this was was crucial to us. We had the opportunity to meet with Rich Greenfield and listen to some of the work by New York Edge and knew right then and there that they were exactly what we needed to get our party started. Now for a touch of the classics…why not hire some opera singers? Well, that’s exactly what we did, but they weren’t just opera singers…they were waiters too! We hired The Three Waiters to perform at our reception in addition to our band, and I must say it was an AMAZING choice. They started off their performance pretending to be waiters, they walked around greeted our guests and then surprised everyone by performing an absolutely amazing opera performance…our guests are still raving about them!

I can’t forget another very important piece of the wedding, the stationery! I knew that I wanted our invitations to really “wow” our guests and must say that this was achieved with the amazingly beautiful work of Lela New York. I wanted the invitations to have a luxurious vintage feel to them, so we implemented touches of silver, ivory lace and a beautiful crystal broach all on top of exquisite blush silk. The outcome was something I couldn’t have been happier with and we definitely got our “wow factor”.

After having gone through this whole wedding planning process, we’ve realized how fortunate we were to have found such amazing talent to bring our vision to life. Talent is not easy to come by, and we knew this was especially true in terms of a photographer. There are literally millions of photographers out there, many of which may have “the eye” for it…but when it comes down to it, I truly feel it takes more than that. It takes patience, understanding and the ability to capture moments in time that we would have otherwise never noticed. The look of your friend when she’s truly happy to see you marry the love of your life, the look in your father’s eyes as he gives you away or a glance you and your mother share as she’s zipping up your wedding dress. I know that her photos will speak for themselves, but Maggie Harkov is such talent and we were incredibly lucky to have her document our special day.

If I take a step back from it all and try to summarize our wedding day, all I can say is that it was everything we dreamed of and more. It was a perfect fairytale day that was made possible by all of the extremely talented vendors we were privileged to have met and by the love of my life, who continues to make my dreams come true each day I’m married to him.

Favorite moment of the day:
There were so many incredible moments that day, but I must say my absolute favorite was when we got into the taxi right after the ceremony and we had the opportunity to really speak to each other and take it all in. I remember looking at my husband and seeing how happy he was and the two of us just kept saying “I can’t believe we finally did it!”. That moment of calmness, looking into my husband’s eyes and feeling nothing but pure joy knowing that this day was the start of the rest of our lives together was a moment I will never forget.

Advice for other brides:
Some advice I’d like to share with other brides is to try your best not to stress the day of. Whatever you need to do to not stress, just do it. There is so much going on the day of your wedding that it will be easy to get caught up in all of the hustle and bustle and not enjoy the day, so try your best to prevent that from happening. We hired a great team of people and I made sure to stay extremely organized, so the day of I was very calm. Honestly, by the rehearsal I made sure to have everything in order and felt I could trust the team I hired. This allowed me to really take in what was going on around me because I wasn’t worried about anything. I could enjoy the day and all of the special moments that took place.

Another thing that my groom made sure to remind me of is that this is just one day and that we shouldn’t lose sight of what it represents. Needless to say, planning a wedding can be stressful. Be sure to remember that it’s more than just a big party you’re planning; it’s a day that represents the start of your lives together as husband and wife. It’s so much more than pretty flowers, invitations and guest lists; it signifies two people becoming one. Whenever I would begin to stress about something during the planning process, I would try to remember that if something doesn’t go exactly according to plan it’s okay because in the end I’ll still be marrying my best friend and that’s really what it’s all about.

New York Botanical Garden Wedding from Charlotte Jenks Lewis

As a ballroom bride myself, there’s no hiding the fact that I have a heart for the classics. The black and the white, the pomp and the circumstance, and that all around sense of elegance that comes with a traditionally crafted “I do.” And this New York Botanical Garden affair? Well, it’s all of the above. Made even lovelier through the lens of Charlotte Jenks Lewis, this is one full gallery you can’t afford to miss.

From the Bride… In March of 2012, Aaron told me we had to go to a cocktail party for his med school at Real Artways, the cinema where we saw a movie on our first date, which also doubles as a gallery and event space. We arrived to be told we were the first to arrive. I was actually sort of annoyed because I had raced home from work and changed as fast as I could so we could get there right on time when the event supposedly started. I probably should’ve known something was up because Aaron said it started at 5:45 pm. What starts at 5:45? My engagement did apparently! Because we were “the first to arrive,” one of the people that worked at the theater asked if we could wait in the theater while they continued to set up. We sat in one of the rows and waited. Within thirty seconds, my favorite Billie Holiday song “The Very Thought of You” started playing. I kept saying to Aar “did you do something?” and he kept saying “no, this is weird! I have no idea what’s going on!”

Finally, “I Believe” by Stevie Wonder came on, which we used to listen to when we first started dating, and then a slideshow of photos of us throughout our relationship started on the big screen and that’s when I knew. I started crying. Finally, after the Stevie song, another song came on but I couldn’t place who was singing or what song it was. I started to silently panic because I figured that the song must be from an important time in our relationship and I was feeling so bad that I couldn’t place it at all. After about a minute, I turned to Aaron and just said sheepishly, “I don’t recognize this song, who is this?” and he said “It’s me.” He had written the song and gone to a recording studio where he sang and played guitar, even overlaying his own voice for the harmonies and then he had the track professionally mastered!

It was the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard and on the recording, at the end of the song, he had recorded himself saying “I love you, baby, will you marry me?” When I looked over at him, with tears in my eyes, he had the ring out! After I said yes, he asked me to dance, and the last song that came on was “our song,” which is “Slow Dance” by John Legend. After our first dance as an engaged couple, we came out of the theater to applause from everyone that worked there! They had a table set up with champagne and they had laid out an amazing spread right in the theater. The manager of the theater gave us the poster of the movie we saw on our first date (which we now have framed and hanging in our living room!). I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect engagement.

As far as wedding planning went, we knew we wanted to be outside, at least for part of the wedding! One of our favorite things to do is to take long walks in beautiful scenery, so the New York Botanical Garden was perfect because of their private ceremony space surrounded by the lush gardens and beautiful greenery all around you. I used Pinterest to track down images of the type of dreamy, romantic, candlelit, garden wedding that I dreamed of and every single one of our vendors brought our vision to life! Naomi Martin and Chris Jobes of Martin Jobes Design took our Pinterest inspiration and had the idea of bringing the garden inside for the reception with gorgeous peonies, ranunculus and hydrangeas and greenery everywhere we looked along with beautiful mercury glass candleholders with long romantic candlesticks. Naomi’s display of mock privet over our escort card table still takes my breath away. It was so dramatic and beautiful.

Continuing our garden theme, Rob Charlton at Goosefish Press hand drew the Enid Haupt Conservatory for our gorgeous invitations. Callie Tein at Modern Trousseau couldn’t have dreamed up a more beautiful or fitting dress than the Ellis with its intricate, delicate, lovely flowered lace and ethereal organza bottom. I am SO excited that I was the first bride to try the Ellis on and to wear it at my wedding! Callie and her amazing team custom fit the dress to me using a muslin fit process in her studio in Woodbridge, CT. The flowered lace was just so perfect for my wedding and I loved working with everyone at Modern Trousseau! I could never have even found my dress and my dreamy cathedral veil without Anneke Lee Sharp, my lovely and amazing bridal consultant at the White Dress by the Shore in Clinton, CT, who laughed and cried with me through everything.

Our music was really important to us, especially because Aaron is a musician in his spare time, so we were thrilled with the Kenny Ford Band who really rocked it all night and kept everyone dancing, even playing our special request Pearl Jam “Yellow Ledbetter” for one of our slow songs, which is the only time I’ve ever heard that song played at a wedding (and the only time Kenny’s ever played it at one!). Kenny and the band also backed up my amazingly talented brother-in-law, Eddie, for a rendition of “Just the Way You Are” which knocked everyone’s socks off and didn’t leave one dry eye in the house. Finally, Abigail Kirsch really made everything so easy for us and our event coordinator Steph Hill is just a truly amazing human being in every way. It was really our privilege to work with her!

Last, but not least, Charlotte Jenks Lewis has been a rock for me through it all. I first met Charlotte pretty soon after we were engaged and we clicked right away (especially being fellow Vassar College grads!) and I’ve had the opportunity to get to know her over the past year and a half. It really is amazing how much you rely on your photographer and I couldn’t imagine having my wedding day without Charlotte who comforted me, calmed me and made things happen! Aside from her stunning, dreamy, ethereal photos, she is the biggest doll in the world and I am fortunate to have been able to work with her and her talented team.

Vineyard Wedding from Caroline Rocchetta Photography

It’s funny how giddy I can get just from looking at two people in love, but it’s something I just couldn’t adore more. And when I get to see that love unfold through images like these from Caroline Rocchetta at a gorgeous winery like Paumanok Vineyard, I feel like I’ve struck wedding-gold. There isn’t a better way to start your morning, so fill up your cup of jo, and join me in the full gallery.

From Caroline Rocchetta PhotographyCorey & Chris have the kind of love that exists in fairytales. They were truly born for one another and anyone who has had the pleasure of knowing them will attest to it. It was at Paumanok Vineyard where they first met and fell in love, so it was certainly the perfect place to be wed, among the vines, and at the edge of a golden meadow. The evening sky was spectacular and beneath the tent felt like a new and brilliantly glowing galaxy. It was their world and it could not have been any more amazing.

Chris’ mom did all the flowers, making sure to include lots of oats and wheat which is symbolic of fertility… someone’s excited to someday be a Grandma! Corey & Chris raised all of the oysters themselves!

Dark Horse Catering prepared an incredible “farm to table” family style dinner, which of course featured their very own locally raised Bison. Chicken was provided by Corey’s & Chris’ friends at Deep Roots Farm in Orient. And freshly caught fish was provided by a friend.

Prospect Park Boathouse Wedding from Anne-Claire Brun Photography

I love a Bride with a vision, particularly when that vision is as beautiful as this. Because the pretty things that danced around in this lovely Bride’s head during her planning process turned out to be whimsical perfection. With details that make your heart flutter and a love that will make it do flips, every image from Anne-Claire Brun is happiness defined. See them all here.

From the Bride…As much as I like to claim it was love at first sight, Jeff and I ran in the same circle of friends and chatted in passing on a few occasions. However, we were never formally introduced. To be exact, it took three times before an opportunity presented itself. As they say, third time’s a charm! The third meet was on a beautiful summer night in 2008. Jeff and I were at a friends’ rooftop party in Lower East Side. It was here when a good friend introduced us to each other as the “other friend” who did not “drink.” Yes, both Jeff and I are quite a rarity, especially in New York City. We chuckled at the candid introduction, as both of us were obviously used to this label. Then the song “Oblivion” by Anything Box came on. We both started singing it together and began discussing our music interests, which ranged from hip hop to indie rock and more. Through these two commonalities, our conversation surpassed small talk and into sharing stories about our upbringings in small town America as Chinese kids in restaurant families. From then, a wonderful friendship began. We literally have been inseparable since Jeff and Sandy have been inseparable since.

During our two year anniversary in October, Jeff planned out a secret outing that he would not unveil. The day started at our favorite Brooklyn brunch spot – Brooklyn Label. Afterwards, Jeff hurriedly and nervously drove us an hour and half out of the city still giving me no hints. I initially assumed this was going to be a nice pumpkin-picking afternoon. However, once the car pulled up the road, I saw a massive field speckled by large weave baskets with neon-colored fabrics waiting to be filled with…hot air! We took off into the air and had a beautiful ride over Northeast’s fall foliage. It was not until we landed did Jeff pulled me to the side and got on one knee and popped the question. Of course, I said YES!

Within weeks of the proposal high, we began our search for the perfect venue. Jeff and I knew we wanted an outdoor wedding with a view in Brooklyn, since it’s where we live. Initially, we thought we were going to go for another venue in Prospect Park, but when we approached the Boathouse after walking across the park, we immediately knew this was the spot. The Venetian styled building sits spectacularly by the Prospect Park Lake. Upon entering the space, we immediately fell in love with the flow of space…AND you can rent a mini boat for you and your guests to ride after the ceremony! We finalized the date within a month time.

Unlike most, I decided not to limit myself on colors, so we went with yellow gold, gray silver and light coral to compliment the romantic setting. Additionally, I wanted to make sure there was a bit of an Asian flair, since my husband and I are Chinese. I took these choices and went on hunt to find our florist. There are so many choices out there, but I wanted to work with a creative small shop. I stumbled across Park Deli, a floral shop (that also sells skateboards!) located close to the venue. Michael and Valentine, owners of Park Deli, were fabulous to work with! We wanted Asian ceramic vases to represent our heritage and they found these simple cream Japanese-style containers. The flowers and colors we selected with them in the beginning really brought all the décor and the bridesmaid’s dressed together.

With two main things checked off our list, I began day dreaming about how I would like the big day to look. The ceremony takes place on a small pier outside facing the Lullwater Bridge and landscape. As to not get lost in the view, I knew we had to create a focal point. I stumbled upon Everly Lane on Etsy who creates fun tissue tassel garlands. After measuring the pier, I created an image of how I wanted the garlands to hang above us on our special day. I sent this to Everly Lane with my color selection and in a month it came in! We had Park Deli install it the day of.

I definitely partook in a lot of the design, since we did not have a wedding planner. For the entrance, I went to a flea market and bought an old antique frame that would hold the guests name cards and table assignment. For the guestbook, I designed a massive puzzle and had someone at my work, which is an architecture firm, help me laser cut it out. The guests were instructed to write warm words on the “white” side of the puzzle and place it in an apothecary jar. To keep guests cool outside, I ordered the Chinese sandalwood fans that were placed on each chair. It’s amazing how much guests enjoyed these favors! During my down time, I started painting our cake toppers with each having a bit of our physical character. Park Deli then provided a few of our selected flowers to be sprinkled on the cake. I found this to be a quick and affordable way to decorate a wedding cake!

There is an upper level to our venue, which has a balcony that overlooks the ceremony steps and lake. We decided to take advantage of this upper level and stationed a makeshift photo booth. Our friend, Ken, helped us set up the equipment and space, while my bridesmaids created the backdrop. It was the groomsmen’s responsibility to go shop for props…and shop they did! You can check out the slideshow I created here – Jeff & Sandy Photo Booth Video (http://vimeo.com/52757840).

Luckily, my husband’s sister owns an apparel production company in Manhattan, so she was able to create any textile needs I had. Therefore, I browsed the Fashion District for fabrics to bring my vision together. I finalized with table runners in gray and light coral to ground the dining tables, while the main table linens were basic white to keep the space light and airy. For the longest time, I wanted a theme for our reception and fell in love with the phrase “Eat, Drink and be Married!” With the help of my bridesmaids, I created three favor jars for each table that were individually labeled with one word of the phrase. The labeled jars contained favors that represented each word – “Eat” contained chopsticks; “Drink” contained striped straws, “Married” contained sparklers. In Chinese, fireworks (a.k.a. sparklers) were used to ward off evil spirits and we thought this was a perfect way to end the night.

All this of course would be a visual lost if Anne-Claire did not capture it! I think the photos speak for themselves! We scheduled our first meet at a coffee shop and were immediately enamored by her personality and work. She was so down to earth and patient in telling us how the day would go from getting ready to the end of the night. It rained for a few hours before our ceremony, which worried me. However, she never fretted and assured us the pictures would turn out great. I truly believe that getting along with your vendors makes this entire experience better.

My most memorable moment of our special day was our boat ride around the lake during sunset with our closest friends, right after Jeff and I said our vows. It was during this quiet moment when my husband and I were able to take a step back and enjoy all that had transpired. As we returned to the dock, we saw how all the guests were also enjoying their drinks inside and outside! It truly was a beautiful day and we thank everyone who assisted and supported us.

Hudson Valley Wedding from Todd France Photography + True Florette

When a bride who loves flowers gets married and brings on True Florette to handle the design of the day (including all the flowers) it is good. Everyone is happy, including this giddy wedding blogger. Todd France Photography’s images of the day are like a spring breeze and butterflies in my stomach, all rolled into one!

From the designer… Maggie and Eoin’s s Summer wedding was celebrated outdoors on the grounds of Torne Valley Vineyards in the scenic Lower Hudson Valley area of New York on June 15, 2013.

The bride was inspired by rich colors and textures found in nature and she infused loads of color into the details throughout the day. Maggie’s bridal bouquet was bursting with vibrant blooms and interesting botanicals including ranunculus, pincushion protea, peonies, dahlia, blueberry branch, succulents and garden roses all in fresh Summer shades of tangerine, coral and aubergine. As a special touch, Maggie’s bouquet handle was wrapped in lace from her Mother’s wedding gown, and her Gucci bridal shoes added an unexpected fun pop of color!

The groom originally hails from Ireland and careful attention was paid to welcoming guests from abroad and blending both families in the semi-traditional ceremony on the lawn of the vineyard. Maggie and Eoin said their vows under a birch chuppah, complete with an Irish blessing and breaking of the glass.

Guests strolled across the vineyard lawn with parasols and custom-printed fans to beat the Summer heat. Maggie’s love of flowers was evident at the escort card table where a colorful garden arrangement welcomed guests. Custom-designed wooden place card holders by True Florette held place cards handmade by Maggie and her Mother with paper from Paper Source. (The bride is a medical resident – how she found time to make place cards we’ll never know!) To complement the vineyard’s elegance, traditional elements were infused with rustic details, including aged wood serving trays, iron candelabras adorned with simple crystals, and cut glass cocktail vases.

The festive black-tie reception was a true reflection of the bride and groom’s style and personality- filled with joy and exuberance!

Brooklyn Botanical Gardens Wedding from Aurelia D’Amore

I have to say, I think The Brooklyn Botanic Garden has to be one of the dreamiest venues I ever did see. There, I said it. My love struck proclamation might have a little something to do with this stunning soiree captured so beautifully I could cry by Aurelia D’Amore. It’s a Brooklyn beauty if there ever was one, and it’s all waiting for you right here.

From the Bride…My whole family hails from Brooklyn. We were scattered throughout the borough for years, but over the decades we all slowly moved away, and our ties to it have grown more and more tenuous year by year. So my family was really excited when Aidan and I re-established our roots there by moving to Park Slope in 2009—but they were ecstatic when we decided to get married at the Palm House at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

We had a late-fall wedding, and we spent months panicking about the weather. And then, the night before the ceremony, there was a pretty epic rainstorm (a week later we had Hurricane Sandy, by the way). But that Saturday morning, we woke up to bright, sunny skies: barely a cloud in sight, temperatures in the sixties… pretty much the perfect day. So nice, in fact, that Aidan walked with his groomsmen (and one groom’s lady) from our apartment to the wedding. And later on, during the ceremony, as the sun set into a clear, starry sky in full view of the all-glass Palm House, we knew we really couldn’t have lucked out more.

The ceremony, not surprisingly, was my favorite part of the night. Our friend Cody, who introduced us seven years ago, officiated, and the three of us wrote the whole thing together. Cody is a fantastic comedienne, and she had everyone laughing and crying throughout, which was perfect. We didn’t want the ceremony to be boring, but we didn’t want to make light of it either. Case in point: for our two readings one was Cody and my brother Jordan (also an actor) performing a classic comedy routine that my cousins first performed on the Ed Sullivan Show in the 60s; and the second was Aidan’s boss, Lewis Lapham, reading a beautiful poem by the thirteenth-century Sufi poet Rumi.

It was all perfect. We used a ring that had been first worn by Aidan’s great-great-grandparents in the 1890s and was used in over a dozen ceremonies in his family since. My two grandmothers and Aidan’s grandmother walked down the aisle during the processional, arm in arm with Aidan’s groomspeople—the oldest and the youngest generations flanking us to remind us of the family who produced us and the future that this wedding was a promise toward. The bridesmaids got multiple catcalls during from the audience as they came down the aisle, and before Cody said a word, there were tears and hysterical laughter from all sides. And Cody knocked it out of the park—she was basically the best officiant/emcee anyone could ever hope for.

Following on the heels of our weather luck, we soon discovered how fortunate we were to have selected the vendors we did, because they were all amazing. Of particular excellence was our photographer, Aurelia D’Amore, who flew out from Los Angeles. Her pictures are gorgeous, and we still can’t figure out which ones to choose for our wedding album– they’re all too good! And our DJ, Taro Baugham, who works with Sugartown Industries, nailed every single section of the night, from ceremony to last dance. For us, after the venue and the ceremony, the music was our biggest priority. We’re both obsessive music nuts, and Taro was extremely patient with us as we handpicked each playlist and requested a ton of must-play songs, and he took the way-too-many songs we selected for dancing and crafted a perfect set. The dance floor was packed all night; it didn’t matter whether Taro played Del Shannon or Phoenix. And watching our grandmothers shimmy with equal fervor to the Hava Nagila as they did to ODB was a real treat.

Our friends and family came from all over: Los Angeles and New York, England and Singapore. And after weeks of planning and worrying, everything went off without a hitch—and we were left with the perfect night that we will forever treasure.

Shelter Island Wedding at La Maison Blanche from Dove + Sparrow

Have I mentioned just how much I adore Dove + Sparrow?  How I seriously jump out of my seat when I see their name pop up in my inbox; how I am downright obsessed with every single wedding they send our way?  Well, if I haven’t, then consider this my official announcement: they are awesome and I love them with every ounce of my being.  Because when I see affairs like this sweet Shelter Island beauty, it’s a full-blown obsession from the get-go.  One that has me swooning over darling DIY details, a breathtaking setting and one crazy amazing Pennington Flowers bouquet.  Click here for all of the pretty.

From the Bride… My husband, Nic, and I met in 2008 in Princeton, NJ. A few months later, he accepted a job offer and moved to Maine. Over the past four years, and despite a move to Boston on my part, we have never lived less than 200 miles away from on another. Our families are even farther away, with mine still in NJ and his in Sweden. Therefore, being able to host a wedding and have all of our family and friends together in one place was very special to us.

My great grandparents purchased a home off the coast of the Hamptons on Shelter Island, NY in the 1940s, which is now shared among my grandmother’s siblings and used as a summer home among our families. Shelter Island is a small island between the north and south forks of Long Island, and is only accessible by ferry. I have such wonderful, happy memories of Shelter Island from my childhood, so Nic and I thought it would be the perfect place to get married. With its small community and laid-back feel, it was a great setting for our intimate wedding.

Many of our guests traveled from Sweden to celebrate with us. Our friends’ and family’s presence meant so much to us that it became even more important to us to have a hand in the small details. I made over 100ft of pennants for the hotel’s porches, as well as the programs, menus, cake topper, table numbers, and heart garland for the place cards (which our guests turned into name tags!). We spent the year collecting bottles for our flowers… we had about 250 of them. My bridesmaids and I had arranged about 60 jars of white roses for the rehearsal dinner the night before, which were repurposed for the ceremony. We realized that the chapel can be hard to find, so Nic and I made wooden signs pointing our guests in the right direction.

The ceremony took place at the Union Chapel in the Grove. Built in 1875, it is the quintessential Hamptons chapel, with its wooden exterior and colorful interior, complete with stained glass windows that incorporate actual local sea shells into the designs. Friends played acoustic guitar for the processional and recessional and our siblings did the readings. My father walked me down the aisle, and I held the cross necklace my late grandfather wore every day throughout the ceremony. Our best friends served as our bridal party, and our officiant read a prayer in honor of Nic’s mother. The ceremony was very personal and intimate.

The reception was held at La Maison Blanche. We wanted it to feel like a big, end-of-summer back yard party. The cocktail hour took place on the front porch of the hotel, where guests could relax or play a game of petanque on the hotel’s courts. Dinner and dancing took place on the back porch, with guests enjoying french bistro-style fare, such as lamb burgers and pomme frites. My good friend, Whitney of Whitney Stanek Photography, kindly donated her photo booth set up for the night, which was a huge hit.

Swedish weddings are typically very formal (men wear morning coats, women wear ball gowns and gloves), so our relaxed vibe was a change for the Swedes, but we did keep the Swedish tradition of speeches during dinner. Instead of toasts, friends and family give long (they can last over a half hour!) speeches, that can include anything from photo presentations to skits. In order to coordinate everything, the groom assigns one of his groomsmen to the title of “toastmaster,” which is similar to the US title of best man. (Aside from toastmaster, we didn’t have a best man or maid of honor, and chose to go with “best men” and “best ladies.”) Those who could not make it to the wedding also sent in toasts to be read aloud during dinner.

I had very specific ideas about how I wanted everything to look, from the flowers to the place settings, and I couldn’t have been happier to see it all executed. Specifically, Jeff Pennington’s team at Pennington Flowers in Southampton, NY, did an excellent job. I said I wanted a h-u-g-e bouquet, and they delivered! They were also so easy to work with and the reception flowers were exactly what I wanted. I can’t say enough great things about them! We were so happy to be able to host our family and friends in such a beautiful, happy setting.

New York City Elopement from Alicia Swedenborg Photography

There’s a reason why some of the world’s greatest love stories take place in the heart of New York City, and that reason is simple.  NYC rocks… and amongst all of the bright lights, hustle and bustle and excitement is a true and honest romantic vibe that bursts from every last building, borough and city sidewalk.  It’s the kind of place that makes you want to grab your honey and say “I do” with nothing but each other; the kind of place that is made for elopements.  And this darling duo’s day is just that.  An amazing affair with a stunning Zetterberg Couture gown and Alicia Swedenborg on hand to capture every moment.  Click here for sooo much more.

From Alicia SwedenborgThis couple is from Sweden and grew up in the country but loves the opposite – a big city! So they decided to elope and get married in New York City. It was just the two of them, no guests and we had plenty of time taking photos in the sunset!

Southampton Wedding from Patricia Kantzos Photography

East coast elegance is basically defined by this Southampton stunner captured (beautifully, I might add) by Patricia Kantzos Photography. It’s anything and everything that has ever described the perfect east coast fête wrapped up in one gorgeous post. With it’s simple yet sophisticated vibe and classic yet fresh feel, I’ll go as far as to say it’s completely perfect. Actually, it definitely is. See it all here.

From PatriciaI love everything about Whitney and Sim’s wedding. It’s elegant, fun and filled with gorgeous details. When we met to discuss their wedding photography, Whitney & Sim expressed that being near the ocean in Southampton set the tone for their wedding day. They wanted to keep things simple and free of formalities. They hoped to achieve the same with their photography. They wanted to tell the narrative of their day in a way that was real and true. Capturing the fun was key.

I was thrilled when Whitney explained she understood the importance of working with natural light. We organized the day’s photography around the most beautiful available light. I also love that Whitney embraced the elements of nature. Being near the beach, there was no getting away from wind. We took advantage of this gift from nature. Whitney is gorgeous. Her simple makeup, wind swept hairstyle and fluid wedding dress was perfect. The result was something magical – you can see it in every image. [dotted]

New York’s Essex House Wedding from Lauren Gabrielle Photography

There are so many words I could use to describe this Essex House wedding from Lauren Gabrielle Photography, but honestly, there isn’t a single one that would possibly do it justice. Glamorous, timeless, perfect? Yes, but nothing quite fits. So I’ll leave you with the notion that it’s every girls dream, (and every bloggers dream too, for that matter) and you can get lost in each and every gorgeous moment right here.

From the Bride… From the moment we got engaged, we both knew we wanted to get married in Manhattan. While we met and started dating in high school in Connecticut, we really started our life together post-college in NYC. We really wanted to incorporate the NYC theme wherever we could. The venue search was exhausting; the city has so many amazing venues, we didn’t know where to start. After visiting an extensive number of different venues we had to decide whether we wanted a hotel wedding, a loft, or one of the old banks that have been turned into an event space. in the end choosing the Essex House was an easy decision. The ballroom was so gorgeous, and the event team was so amazing and accommodating, we knew we made the right choice.

I knew I wanted a really classic and elegant black tie New York City wedding. I love black and white and knew I wanted those to be my wedding colors. I also did not want to look back in 20 years and ask myself “what was I thinking?”. The ballroom at the Essex House is so beautiful I knew I wanted to keep the flowers and decor all white because I did not want to compete with what was already going on. Ashley at Belle Fleur is an amazing artist and brought my vision to life. She had so many creative ideas and was such a pleasure to work with. From the beginning of the wedding planning process we knew we wanted a big party; we wanted our friends and family on the dance floor all night. Our band did not disappoint, they were fantastic and kept our guests dancing for the entire 4 and a half hours (we even extended the party!). Everyone we worked with was absolutely amazing: Stacy and Sally on hair and makeup, our team of coordinators Jason, Jeffrey and Peter, and Lauren our photographer. Thanks to them our wedding day was the most amazing and perfect day of our lives. [dotted]

New York City Hall Wedding from Melissa Kruse Photography

City Hall weddings hold a special place in my wedding-loving heart. Not because I personally tied the knot on city steps, but because a part of me always dreamed of doing so. And my dream looked just like this couple’s gorgeous day captured by Melissa Kruse Photography. To me, their day and their story is romance defined, and you can see every last moment right here.

From MelissaWith a bride of Russian heritage and a groom flying in directly from India the day before they wed, this is the ultimate international couple. And what’s more, this adorable and oh-so-sweet couple’s love truly transcends the test of time and distance. Having met 4 years ago while studying in Italy, they spent most of their relationship long distance with many trips in between. But after a proposal in India last year, and their recent knot-tying, he is finally moving to New York City for good!

So, to open this new chapter in their relationship we made it a point to capture New York’s finest, with the wedding at City Hall, a yellow cab ride to portraits in Central Park, and a quick stop at a quintessential hot dog stand. My favourite details of the day include the stunning emerald engagement ring they discovered in India, a dash of poppy red on the nails, classic white roses for a touch of elegance, and an ultra-lux fur shrug – a perfect touch for this chilly pre-spring occasion (and from H&M no less!)

And while this intimate marriage ceremony was already packed with so much love and beauty, they have a full wedding ceremony planned for family and friend’s this coming September in Italy, with a celebratory reception in India to follow in December.

From the Bride… I met my husband in a piazza in Rome almost four years ago. Jatin and I were students studying abroad at The American University of Rome when we met and fell in love. Since then our lives have been filled with Skype calls, airline tickets and lots of love.

Jatin is from India and I’m from the US so you can imagine the amount of frequent flier miles we have accumulated. We have had a long distance relationship for years with lovely trips in between – from the Coliseum to the Taj Mahal, we have been blessed to see some of the worlds most incredible sights together.

Jatin proposed to me a year ago in Hyderabad, India with a beautiful and unique emerald engagement ring, to this day I still can’t believe its mine! We celebrated our legal marriage here in New York City on a magical March day. We are having our Catholic ceremony back in the beautiful Italian city where we met this coming September. A reception in New Delhi, India will follow in December.

Thankfully we are finally now on the same continent, under the same roof and now sharing the same name. Love knows no boundaries! [dotted]

Highlands Country Club Wedding from Judy Pak Photography

Judy Pak has this way of making you fall in love with weddings; it’s like the moment you lay your eyes on her stunning images (works of art, really), you can’t help but seriously adore all things “I do.”  And this darling Highlands Country Club affair is certainly no exception with its rainy day awesomeness and beyond beautiful classic details mix and mingling with vibrant purple hues.  Fall in love with every last moment right here.

From the Bride… I will forever hold in my heart, the moment Travis and I sat at our sweetheart table and looked back to the candlelight glow hitting the frames that adorned the fireplace (each frame more memorable than the last), and when we looked to the right, we saw T’s family table which had friends and family that traveled across the United States to share our special day with us and when we looked forward we were overwhelmed by all the smiling faces, enjoying the day and celebrating Travis and my love for each other… we just looked at each other and reminded ourselves how lucky and loved we are on this day and in our lives. My grandma asked me the other day (as she was unable to attend the wedding), “You had said you wanted a wedding of your dreams….did you get what you wanted?” I undoubtedly answered, “Yes, Gram…. yes I did!”

From Clean Plate PicturesMargot and Brian’s wedding was an excellent way to start the year. They had a really sweet and relaxed day, with close friends officiating the ceremony. So stylish yet simple. There were fun details like fake tattoos, a candy bar and delicious doughnuts for dessert. The only thing that was missing was their adorable pup Stevie (who we met at their engagement shoot last year.) These two are so lovely and we wish them all the luck in the world.

Bridal Hair Round Up

I am such a hair girl. Not that I can actually do anything with my mane, but when I see an amazing ‘do I can’t help but be in awe. Because, to me, a good hair style is like a work of art, and picking the right one is oh so crucial for your big day. So I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite bridal hair moments on SMP, and after Face Time Beauty Concierge‘s great tips this morning – I am officially proclaiming this hair day on SMP New York. Do you have a favorite I missed? Link to it in the comments below!

Bridal Hair Tips from Face Time Beauty Concierge

Today might just be one of my favorite days on SMP New York. Because we are going to be talking all things Bridal hair with none other than Linsey of Face Time Beauty Concierge. That’s right, she is dishing all the deets on ways to master your mane on the day you say I do. And trust me when I say you will want to file these tips away for ever and ever (because they totally apply to your daily ‘do too)…

Choose your hairstylist wisely. You will know from the first correspondence with your potential hairstylist if they are “the one” as long as you trust your instincts. Ask yourself these questions. Did he/she respond to your email or your call in a timely manner? Were you comfortable with them right off the bat? Did they make you feel at ease and confidant that they would not only be able to make your hair look like a million bucks but also show up on time? Remember that you can always work with the hairstylists to make minor adjustments to your hair but you cannot change their personality. If you feel uncomfortable from the get-go, find someone else.

Don’t fight the overall aesthetic. If you are getting hitched on the beach, don’t go for a ballroom hairstyle. Your hair and makeup should be the underlay or backdrop to the dress and the atmosphere of your wedding. A beach bride should opt for something a bit more playful or casual like big waves or a whipped chignon that doesn’t look too overdone. However, if you are getting married in a ballroom or a formal setting, then go for the structured updo to play up the drama and sophistication.

Hair can’t hold curl? Try these tips: Shampoo but don’t condition. If your hair has a hard time holding texture, do this just once right before your hairstylists arrives. It will not ruin your hair, instead, it will roughen up the cuticles and help hair lock curl into place. Set your hair for as long as possible. Just before each small bunch of hair is curled, spritz a bit of product on to deadbolt it into place. Then longer your hair can set, the more time it has to conform to it’s new curly or wavy texture. Once the set is taken out, the locks should be good to go for a long time.

Consider extensions. At Face Time Beauty, we often add “clip ins” for a timely and temporary boost, when hair is limp or lifeless. Just be sure that the extensions you buy are real hair (as opposed to synthetic) and the color matches perfectly.

Scheduling should make sense: Make sure you have enough time for each person to get ready. At Face Time Beauty, our “rule of thumb” is 1 hour per service for bride and 40 min per service for each other person. We also build in cushion room at the beginning and at the end. We always suggest that the bride gets her beauty services somewhere in the middle of the timeframe. For example, if there are 3 people getting hair services, the bride should be second. This way, the bride isn’t first but she also isn’t at the tail end when nerves are running high. There is nothing worse then rushing.

Book your stylist for touch ups: Hairstylists often pack up when the bride and bridal party start getting dressed, but the bride has hours before she actually gets married. Consider asking your stylist to stay until the ceremony or longer. This way, you can rest assured that your hair will be perfect for your walk down the aisle.

This afternoon we are bringing you some of our favorite styles that have graced the pages of SMP – so stay tuned! xoxo, A.Blaire.

Manhattan Wedding from Sara Wight Photography

Manhattan weddings are the epitome of sophistication; the crème de la crème of glamour, if you will.  So when a talented photographer like Sara Wight sends us a little Manhattan ditty, we bask in its beauty like it’s no one’s business.  Because is there anything better than lush blooms from OVANDO, a swank reception at One if By Land, Two if by Sea and two sweeties in love?  Answer: no.  Join us in the gallery for soooo much more.

From Sara Wight PhotographyFelicia and Peter had planned on marrying in Italy, the bride’s native country. The ailing health of Felicia’s mother forced the couple to rethink their plans and hold the wedding in their hometown of Manhattan. They were married in a traditional Roman Catholic ceremony at the Shrine Church of St. Anothony of Padua in the West Village. The reception was held at their favorite restaurant, One if by Land, Two if by Sea. The couple loved the old-world European charm of this venue, as well it’s rich history (it was once Aaron Burr’s carriage house), not to mention the restaurant’s delicious menu! A trumpeter and pianist added ambiance to an already elegant affair.

Long Island Wedding from Robert & Kathleen Photographers

At the heart of every wedding is a love story. A weak at the knees, let’s grow old together kind of story that sets my heart aflutter time and time again. But what makes this one a wee bit sweeter is that this adorable duo grew up together — even attending the same pre-school. But as fate would have it, it wasn’t until just five years ago that they truly fell in love. The celebration? A classic Long Island affair with pops of pink blooms by Bayport Flower House. The whole day was captured by Robert & Kathleen Photographers, and there’s an entire gallery and film waiting for you below.

From Robert & Kathleen PhotographersKathleen and Dan had known each other for years. Growing up in the same town, they seemed to orbit around one another – attending the same preschool, elementary school, high school. They knew each other’s names, would recognize each other in town. But in all those years they had never really gotten to know one another. Until a dinner on the Upper East Side five years ago changed all that for good. That night, they shared sushi and traded stories and, in the process, found that they had much more in common that just living within the same zip code as kids. They talked for hours and by the time the night was over, Kathleen knew she wanted to see Dan again. Because in those few hours with him, she knew deep down that something incredible was beginning.

After that night, Dan couldn’t seem to stop thinking about Kathleen’s laugh. That infectious, Julia-Roberts-style laugh that made him smile at the mere thought of it. He needed to see her again. He needed to hear that laugh again. Because seeing Kathleen’s smile, hearing that laugh, made Dan feel something he never had felt before. Over the next four years they shared many more dinners. They discovered new New York neighborhoods, traveled to beautiful places, and dreamt of the life they would share together. After all those years of passing by one another, they knew that this time the timing was exactly right. They had “found” each other and they weren’t going to take that for granted.

Last year there was another dinner. Another night on the East Side, sharing sushi and trading stories. After dinner Dan got a phone call. He was needed at work, right away. He had to go fix something at a job site. With no time to spare, he told Kathleen she would have to come with him and that it shouldn’t take long. She agreed, thinking it must be a serious emergency since Dan would never usually takes her to a job site. They were ushered into Grand Central, met by security and granted access to the 59th floor.

But there is no 59th floor in the MetLife building. There was no work emergency for Dan to rush to either. When the elevators door opened, Dan escorted Kathleen out onto the roof of the building. He took her hand and walked her around, showing her the view of Manhattan from nearly 60 stories up. There, with the city traffic rushing by below them and the Empire State Building standing tall behind them, Dan got down on one knee and asked Kathleen to be his wife. Fourteen months later, they gathered together all of their family and friends, all the people who had shared this journey with the two of them, in one of their favorite places in the world. They promised to love each other forever and hosted the celebration of their lives, with bonfires by the water and dancing well into the night. There, at the end of Long Island, Kathleen and Dan’s married life began.

New York City Engagement Session from W Studios New York

I know I’ve said this before, but is New York City the perfect place for engagement sessions or what?  I mean, the hustle and bustle of the city, the seriously stunning backdrops, the never-ending lineup of fabulous locales… it’s a city simply made for capturing that pre-wedding bliss.  And when that pre-wedding bliss comes in the form of an uber-cute couple such as this one, it makes it all the more merrier with smile after smile captured by W Studios New York and a whole lot of happy moments in this urban lover’s paradise.  See it all right here.

From W Studios New York… Ashley and Sean moved to the city from Los Angeles last June. Our New York winters were a big adjustment for this sun loving couple, but luckily we planned their engagement session on the first warm day of the year! It seemed like all of New York decided to venture out on this beautiful day. The High Line park was filled with visitors and greenery, which made Sean a little uncomfortable, but as long as he was looking at Ashley his face would light up and a huge smile would spread across his face. Soon after, we found some secluded cobblestone streets in Greenwich Village where the two of them truly got to be themselves and enjoy the city to its fullest.
