From photographer, Antonio RochaThe wedding of Ashley and Michael was one with a rich history, deep friendships, and memorable moments. Their wedding took place in the very beautiful NYIT de Seversky Mansion. Guests came from all over the world to witness this union.

During the ceremony, Ashley and Michael exchanged handwritten vows. Ashley’s Maid of Honor was her longtime friend, Ashley, who has witnessed the love couple has for each other first hand and knew Michael was in love with Ashley since the moment he met her. Michaels’s bestman, was his college friend, Kwame. They studied together at Harvard and have been friends ever since. Paying homage to their African roots, the couple jumped the broom after exchanging rings.

After the ceremony, the guest were escorted into the library where they had cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. After cocktail hour, the reception started with the traditional first dance soon followed by the New Orleans style second line around the mansion. Since Ashley is from New Orleans, it was a must for the wedding. It was an elegant and lovely wedding.

Urban Space

From the Bride… Sitting down to write about our day brings up such happy memories. The best part was that James was very involved in the planning with me. It meant so much to me to be able to put this together with him.

All we wanted was for our guests to enjoy a comfortable atmosphere, delicious food, and good music. And the most important thing – beautiful photographs to last forever.

It was held at The Green Building in Brooklyn – a big open space with chandeliers, exposed brick and french doors leading to a beautiful outdoor area. It was perfect. The idea that we could decorate this empty space was so exciting! Despite a big guest list, we still wanted it to feel casual and for our guests to make friends, enjoy themselves and feel right at home. We had a blast working with Molly from Glitter + Rye to make the space feel cozy and intimate.

Our vendors were all exceptional and went beyond our expectations. We worked with Shannon from Naturally Delicious to cater the evening. She made us feel like anything was possible and helped us plan the wedding of our dreams – a never-ending cocktail party, with an abundance of passed hors d’ oeuvres and comfort food stations.

Our all vinyl DJ, Michael Antonia – The Human Jukebox, kept the dance party going all night. He mixed old throwbacks with new music, and people still tell me what a great time they had on the dance floor. He also played some very old music which I’d requested, specifically for my grandfather to enjoy. I remember a moment during the night when I heard one of my grandpa’s favorite songs start playing. I ran over to him, and even though he couldn’t dance with me, we stood together and I held him tight. And now, only three months since the wedding, my sweet grandpa is no longer with us. But he was happy and healthy on my wedding day, and I just have to hold on to that. I’ll always be able to look back and cherish the precious moment he and I shared in the midst of the reception because our amazing photographers were right there to capture it.

Our floral arrangements were done by Sarah Bedford of Bedford & Co. Sarah was lovely to work with and her subtle, but striking flower design looked effortless. Sarah also created my beautiful flower crown.

My make-up artist, Mandy Bisesti, made me feel natural and beautiful, like myself but flawless. My hair stylist Seventy Jane Arniotis, gave me loose waves with a braided crown. Woven into my braid was a gold chain my grandmother had left to me.

And now, my dress. It was a blush Sarah Seven gown, purchased at New York’s Lovely Bride. I adored it and our entire wedding color scheme was based on the color of this dress. I intended to make it lighter, but the designer wasn’t available to work with me. I had it altered by layering sheer, ivory fabrics overtop with the help of Rebecca Schoneveld. She was a dream. I sent her my ideas via Pinterest, drew up sketches for her and she helped me bring everything together.

My bridesmaids were all mismatched, dolled up in Jenny Yoo’s Bridesmaid and Social Collections. Each of the girls chose a dress that suited her, with a few guidelines – it had to be neutral, short and the more sparkles the better. To compliment and contrast, my maid of honor wore a gorgeous, candy green Ceremony gown by Joanna August. James was in charge of the guys, who were also free to mismatch.

To capture video footage, we bought four Super8 cameras and placed them around The Green Building, with a balloon attached so they could be spotted easily and a note with instructions, just in case the camera was new to any of the guests. We encouraged people to pick them up, take some footage and pass it along. After the wedding, we digitized the film and edited together a fun party video for ourselves.

We are so lucky to have been surrounded by so much love and support. My mother’s poem she wrote for us brought tears to my eyes. And my sister gave such an endearing speech, telling sweet stories about me and my James. All of the toasts were very special. I’ll always remember their thoughtful words.

That was our wonderful day. And I’m excited for the rest of our days. James is more than my best friend, he is my heart. He treats our love as something special and important. He lifts me up and lights up my life with laughter. His happiness is precious to me and I’ll always try to make him smile and laugh for the rest of our lives.

Vintage

From the Photographer…  This wedding took place on July 6th, 2013 at the sumptuous Hempstead House in Long Island, an old estate and mansion built in 1917. The day was hot but events were planned accordingly with the guests wearing light dresses and suits and protection from the sun by Chinese style umbrellas.

Paula and David looked spectacular. They wanted to have a first look and say some special words to each other in a private space before the guests arrived. After that bridesmaids and groomsmen got together for some pictures. Everything had a “beginning of the century” feeling, framed by the gorgeous mansion and the gardens.

The music had a vintage tone as well, with old jazz tunes performed live and giving it all a Gatsby touch, which was inspired in this location.

From the stunning bride… Josh and I met Halloween 2009. Our mutual friend, Sara, invited us to a typical post-college Halloween party at a bar. I was dressed as a cave girl (complete with a bone in my hair) and Josh was dressed as Elmo. When one of my friends, Jim , also dressed as Elmo, drunkenly teased Josh – I stepped in to say hello and the rest is history!

A few years later, us moving in together and Josh proposed. We were planning a trip to Hawaii for the end of the summer and I thought maybe he would propose there, but he caught me off guard the night before we left. He first handed me a “gift” he picked up for me that day. It was stationery that read “Mr. and Mrs. Green”. Confused, I said it was wrong but once I figured out what was going on he was down on one knee. The best part was going to Hawaii the next day to celebrate!

Once we returned, wedding planning began full-speed ahead. Originally wanting a smaller wedding, our guest list crept up rather quickly and I quickly realized I would be planning a much larger wedding than I ever intended. Luckily, this made it easy to pick Abigail Kirsch and Steiner Studios. We already were thinking of getting married in October, and with that the idea of a beach or garden wedding was a little risky, especially in New York. Besides that, I always loved the idea of an urban wedding. Steiner Studios was the perfect venue for us. It was basically a raw space with a great view of Manhattan, able to hold all our guests (which ended up at 302!) and was easily accessible for us in Brooklyn. Moreover, Abigail Kirsch, the in-house caterer, had a first-class reputation as one of the best caterers in the area. From there the planning was easy, our florist- Jeannie at Atlas Floral – was more than accommodating when it came helping my ever-changing vision come to life. Josh, knowing that I had compromised with a bigger than originally planned wedding, let me go wild with my ultra girly vision of soft pink and white flowers, white draped ceilings and a white dance floor. I thought it was a nice contrast to the utilitarian concrete area. The other biggest decision- the dress – was found in Long Island at The Bridal Salon of Manhasset. With my love of flowers, it was a perfect pick…a Romona Keveza Collection dress with silk netting and hand appliquéd flowers.

As everyone told me it would, the year went quickly and the big day arrived. At 7AM my dad called me to tell me he couldn’t sleep so he walked over to Steiner Studios at 6AM to make sure the venue was still standing and the wedding could still go on, hah! My 9 bridesmaids, mother and mother in law and I spent the day at the venue, goofing off, drinking champagne and getting ready with Once Upon a Bride hair and makeup team. Before I knew it, my parents were walking me up the aisle and Josh was breaking the glass. The band, which Josh chose, rocked…one of my favorite parts of the evening was watching Josh and his fraternity brothers jump around to their favorite song Living on a Prayer. The pictures that Ron and his assistant at Brian Dorsey Studios perfectly capture the day – it was so fun to see everyone enjoying the party as much as we did!

My advice to other couples? There are bound to be a few hiccups during wedding planning…whatever it is, make sure to enjoy your day – I ripped off my garter before going down the aisle since it was so itchy, danced until I was sweaty, definitely didn’t get a chance to say hello to all 302 guests and still had the best night of my life.

Casual Wedding at Shenorock Shore Club

What we have here, my loves, is a lesson on how to use bright colors beautifully. This beachy wedding from Craig Paulson Photography is what I would imagine pure happiness and love bottled up in one day would look like, and the smiles? Well, they’re here for the rest of the day!

Casual

From the stunning bride… We wanted our wedding to be colorful, casual and fun. The day was perfect and the setting even better – a beautiful beach club on the Long Island Sound. I grew up playing in the sand here so it was a very nostalgic location for me. We both love the beach and were able to incorporate a nautical element into all aspects of the wedding – from the invitations, to the gift bags, to Kevin’s tie clip. The relaxed and low key vibe carried through to the ceremony – we read our own vows and had a friend do a reading from a children’s book. One of the highlights of the reception was our signature drink. A bar owner friend came through in a huge way and sent over cases of homemade artisanal pickle juice for Picklebacks (Kevin’s favorite – Jameson shots followed by shots of pickle juice). Sounds weird, but they were a hit!

My uncle surprised us toward the end of the night with a Japanese paper lantern, which Kevin and I lit together while everyone crowded around to watch it float away over the Sound.

Kevin and I had been dating for almost 10 years when we got married. We met in college and have been best friends ever since. Kevin proposed a year and a half ago at Blue Hill at Stone Barns, on a Fall hike at one of our favorite spots. Our August wedding was originally scheduled for June, and had to be pushed back due to damage to the Club from Hurricane Sandy. Shenorock looks better than ever and it was all worth it – the most perfect day I can imagine.

Organic DIY Wedding in Brooklyn

I remember when I first heard the term DIT. Not DIY. But DI-T. Doing it together. And I thought that it was so much more appropriate for the weddings we feature because rarely are the projects involved a solo act. Weddings just like this one – held in a loft in Brooklyn – where every element was made by the hands of friends. Click here for more from photographer Loreto Caceres.

From the bride…Ken and I got married on a perfect, sunny day on September 14th in Dumbo, Brooklyn, surrounded by our family and closest friends. The wedding itself was relaxed and fun and, looking back on it, I truly feel like one of the reasons it was so wonderful is that so many of our friends pitched-in in different ways – to help make it happen.

One of our closest friends, Lindsey, officiated our wedding and she put together a service that was personal, honest, funny and romantic. As I look through the photos, I’m struck by how much laughter there was during our ceremony. We wrote our own vows – and I was sure to include in mine the promise never to call Han Solo “Hans Solo” mistakenly again; because Ken is a huge Star Wars fan and has been HORRIFIED to hear me mess up that name on more than one occasion.

When we were dating, we spent a lot of time exploring Brooklyn on our bikes – and getting married in Dumbo, and taking our pictures in the park we’ve ridden to and under the bridge we’ve ridden over so many times made the whole day feel familiar and closely-tied to some of our very fond memories.

As I said – our friends really pitched in a lot to make this wedding happen! And there were a lot of DIY elements that brought this day together. Dumbo Loft is a raw space, so we were able to bring in whatever we wanted to make it really feel like our own. We had a traditional wedding, but we did little things differently, in ways that were important to us, so that it felt unique and true to us. Instead of walking down the aisle with my parents, Ken came out and got me and we walked down together – so that instead of him waiting for me to come to him, we were entering into this day jointly. And instead of using a traditional processional song, we chose Yr Face by Oberhofer – which is romantic and uplifting, simple and sweet.

My college roommate, Lana, along with her mother, offered to design and arrange the bouquets and centerpieces for our wedding. For vases, they coffered coffee tins with birch bark they found in the woods in upstate NY – and the resulting effect was so stunning, you’d never have known that they were handmade and basically cost nothing. After asking me about a color scheme (green and white) and the kinds of flowers I like and don’t like, Lana came up with a concept that was rustic, romantic and quirky all at once using primarily dahlias, antique hydrangeas, foxtail, hydrangea, kale flowers, white snowberries, queen anne’s lace, peppergrass and other local greens. Among the photos we have of the wedding, the ones of our flowers are some of my favorite – not only because they were even more beautiful than I’d imagined, but because the represent the love and hard work of a very good friend — who I gave very little direction and put together something that was exactly what I wanted and absolutely perfect.

For the altar area, another old friend – Jothan, who Ken knows from college – offered to make us a structure as his wedding gift to us. Based on what we liked and didn’t like, he found birch beams to purchase (to tie together with the birch bark vases of our flower arrangements) and built an awning-like structure that he then draped with white fabric to create an airy, light and romantic mood.

We flew the caterer – also a friend of Ken’s – in from Wisconsin to make the delicious farm-to-table food that we’d had twice at his pop-up-restaurants in New York (those were great dates!) OUR FOOD WAS DELICIOUS. For appetizers we served three Underground meats salamis served with pickles, mustard and crackers, three cheeses served with crackers and jam, cut vegetables served with a white bean puree, and romesco. For the main meal, smoked pork, two types of sausages and roasted pork loin, tomato and herb salad with sweet corn and grey sea salt, green bean salad, with oven dried tomatoes, pumpkin seeds and shaved gruyere, braised kale with fall onions and bacon and wheat berry, with grilled onions, carrots and parsnips. And for dessert – instead of cake – we had pie from Four and Twenty Blackbirds, lemon chess, birch beer float and fig & plum crumble.

Our engagement photos (not pictured here) were taken by our friend Dave Bunting. Our DJ, James Mulry, is an old friend of Ken’s and he hit every note perfectly – and had people dancing that I’ve never seen dance before! Ken designed our save the dates – using pictures from a photo shoot we set up ourselves in our basement. And he designed our wedding programs (written by me!) Our place cards were handwritten by one of our out-of-town guests, two nights before our wedding, using sparkly stickers she bought for dollars at a stationery store.

I love air plants. So we decided to give assorted air plants as wedding favors. I didn’t realize that some of them were going to flower – and it was such a nice surprise when, a few weeks after our wedding, guests started sending us photos of their newly-flowering air plants.

My dress. I love my dress! After scouring the internet for dress ideas, I found this Rebecca Taylor gown (it’s not traditionally a wedding dress… and it also comes in dark blue) and decided that I had to have it. I went to the Rebecca Taylor boutique in Tribeca with a few friends, tried it on and loved it. Two days later, I went back with my Mom, saw her get tears in her eyes when I put it on, and bought it on the spot. I tried on one and only one wedding dress and never looked back.

The bridesmaids dresses were much harder to figure out. Initially, I wanted navy blue dresses with little cap sleeves. Somehow, we wound up with stone gray and apricot wrap dresses from BHLDN and I love them!

Anyway – clearly I could go on and on! It was a perfect day. I felt so much love and so much in love. Make sure to check out the awesome photo our photographer captured of a woman with a screaming baby walking in front our group shot of the wedding. That was a priceless, hilarious moment. Loreto Caceres did a great job of capturing lovely, candid moments and all the tiny details that I want to remember forever. I’m so happy to share all of these pictures… the wedding was truly a collaboration between many of the people who are big, important parts of our lives and dear friends.

Colorful Botanic Garden Wedding

I have to say – if the title of this post alone doesn’t get your heart racing a million miles a minute, then I don’t know what will.  Because this, loves, is the type of wedding that marries colorful hues with layers upon layers of romantic details and some of the prettiest blooms you will ever see from Clark’s House of Flowers.  Take in every inch of lovely captured beautifully by Angela Newton Roy right here.

From Angela Newton Roy Amanda and Matt envisioned a wedding day at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanic Gardens in NYC that incorporated their love for ballroom dance, the coziness of the fall season, and their friends and family, polished off with every ounce of sophistication, charm, and warmth that you would expect from these two. Aside from the fact that the venue is located in the groom’s hometown, they chose Snug Harbor for the beautiful gardens and the romantic 19th century charm that it offers. The bride wore a delicate lace dress from Allure Bridals, perfectly accented with heirloom family jewelry and Bruno Magli suede blue shoes. Her bridesmaids looked stunning by her side in Dessy dresses that were the perfect shade of red.

For their first moments seeing each other, we visited the Chinese Scholar’s Garden. Surrounded by tall bamboo, a pond full of koi fish, and beautiful Chinese architecture, it was the perfect backdrop for these special memories. They were married outside in the Italian Garden at Snug Harbor, surrounded by roses, marble reflection pools, and serenaded by violinist’s from the Staten Island Conservatory of Music. The bride chose a gorgeous fall color palette of oranges, reds, and yellows, with orchids adorning her hair and accenting her bouquet of red calla lilies.

Sunflowers, daisies, cockscomb, hydrangeas, and roses were introduced for the reception florals, and each table was named after a different ballroom dance – how cute! – as a nod to their shared love of (and expertise in) ballroom dance. To give the alcoves in the reception hall a cozy feel, the bride’s mother handmade pillows with stitched buttons for their initials “A” and “M”. After guests worked up an appetite dancing, they were offered sweet treats at the cookie bar, with a array of homemade cookies made by the bride, her mother, and her two sisters. From handwritten love letters to each other, to the perfect first dance dip, the love and chemistry shared between these two was unmistakable, and was by far the best accent to their perfect fall wedding!

Family Farm Wedding

I have two words for you. Pie Contest. Yes, this couple took the idea of a Farm wedding to an entirely new level of awesome. With photos that tell the story to utter perfection from Gabe Aceves. My favorite part? I’ll just quote the bride…”Don’t be fooled by the styling – those are real chickens that produce real eggs in a REALLY dirty henhouse on a working farm.” Obsessed. Even more here.

Rustic

From Jill…Eric and I met on a tropical island in the Caribbean and thought in the beginning that we’d elope on the beach. When he began coming home with me to our family farm, he first learned to drive the tractor. I’d find him seeking any excuse to drive it. Then he’d disappear to organize the barn, or spend hours picking strawberries or weeding peas. When I caught him racing out the door to be the first to tend the chickens in the morning, I knew he was as smitten with this enchanted place as I was. When I suggested a down-home wedding, he agreed with gusto. It took a few weeks of convincing my family, however, that this dirty, ramshackle, wildly gorgeous place was suitable for a wedding!

Over a long engagement, we came together as a whole family to conceptualize, strategize, and craft a wedding reflective of our family and traditions. When I reflect on our engagement, I’m humbled by the amount of time and attention our entire family (brothers, aunts, great-aunts, uncles, cousins, friends) came together in what I can only describe as a “barn raising”. Winter was spent selecting vegetables from seed catalogs and spring witnessed the reception site being leveled and sewn with grass seed. Deals were done with the surrounding farms- trading a bushel of tomatoes for bales of hay.

We also honored our family’s Polish heritage, dredging up an old tradition called the “Ozcipiny” (pronounced “Cha-pea-nah”). This traditional Polish unveiling ceremony was shared with all of our guests in a touching, and simultaneously hilarious series of songs, accompanied by a full polka band (the bride’s father and his six brothers!) After a few rousing polkas, we invited guests to send off dozens of Chinese lanterns. Watching our guests illuminated by the lanterns, delighting in the enchantment of it all, was my favorite part of the evening.

We wrote the entire ceremony from scratch, which was an endeavor on its own, but we’ll never trade that time for anything. For over a year we worked to craft the words of our promises to each other. It helped us shape our road map for how we plan to live the rest of our lives together and how we wanted to present our relationship to our guests. We also painstakingly wrote our vows together in a call-and-response manner. Our ceremony was performed by a dear friend who got ordained just to marry us.

Don’t be fooled by the styling – those are real chickens that produce real eggs in a REALLY dirty henhouse on a working farm. The ceremony doors and windows were found in a pile in the barn. The quilts were pulled off of beds that morning. Little of this wedding was “styled”, but all of it was thoughtfully pulled together with love. We’re just really lucky that the rustic farm wedding is in fashion!

Flowers were entirely grown on site and picked by our bridesmaids the morning of the wedding. Mostly sunflowers, Zinnias, Dahlias, and wild field flowers. My floral crown was designed and fabricated the day of the wedding by my mother and godmother and was made of stephanotis and a weed we found growing in the woods called Virgin’s Bower- it was perfect!

Guests were invited to submit a pie in the pie-baking contest which was inspired by the beloved Erie County Fair. In addition to guest submissions, family members baked for days! Four guests volunteered to judge the pies by crust, flavor, and overall aesthetic and the Bride and Groom handed out prizes for the top three pies.

Processional- “Northern Sky” by Nick Drake, performed by friends and family | Recessional- “La Vie en Rose” (Louie Armstrong’s version) performed by the bride’s father on trumpet | First Dance- “As” by Stevie Wonder

For our DIY elements, Eric hand screen-printed all of our invitations. He also screen printed 22 different fruit or veggie designs onto Canvas bags as gifts for our guests. Their bag, imprinted with a vegetable or fruit that corresponded to a tag on their Mason jar which served as their drinking cup, indicated their table assignment. I saw guests sneaking around at the end of the night looking for extra abandoned bags! They loved it. In an homage to the farm’s earlier strawberry-production era, my uncle crafted 25 replica’s of strawberry crates in his wood shop. They held the mason jars full of flowers on the tables.

Engagement Inspiration at Martha Clara Vineyard

If I had the ability to rock the color red, this beautiful gown from Free People would be my everything. It’s absolutely stunning, and happens to be the perfect compliment to an engagement inspiration shoot that can only be described as enchanting.  From those crazy gorgeous paper goods from Jillian Schiavi to the pretty images captured by Marjorie Prvl Photography.  See them here.

From Marjorie Prvl Photography… The idea for this engagement shoot came to when I came across the stunning headdress at Free People, which then led me to discover the maxi dress that I couldn’t pass up. With a color scheme in place, Jillian Schiavi created the stunning invitation suite. We drove out to the east end of Long Island to Martha Clara Vineyard to photograph this sweet inspiration shoot.

Romantic Alder Manor Wedding

When I see the words “romance” and “manor” in the same sentence, my heart explodes.  Seriously, it does. Maybe it’s the Jane Austen lover in me, but historic homes rock my world.  Also rocking my world?  This gorgeous wedding.  It’s romance and then some with about one million reasons to fall helplessly in love. See it all captured perfectly by Elisabeth Millay right here.

And a sweet film from Atlantica Pictures

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/82296454 600 338]

From the Bride… Marc and I met through friends four years ago in New York City. Falling in love in this city has to be one of the biggest highlights of our life so far – there are so many things to discover together that have made building our relationship so magical. When we got engaged we knew we wanted to have our wedding in the same city we fell in love. Marc is from Seattle and I am from Omaha so it was an easy decision to make, being that our guests would be traveling from all over.

It took some time to find a wedding venue, but it was worth the search! We wanted our guests to feel truly in the moment, without the distraction and noise of the city. Alder Manor is a 30-minute train ride away so it allowed us to create an intimate event for the evening, with our guests having easy access to the city for the rest of the weekend. Alder is a gem. The minute we pulled up to the mansion we knew this place was special. Everything about the house is so romantic – from the garden, to the grand foyer, to the libraries. Being there makes you feel as though you were transported back in time, and what a cool vibe for a wedding!

Everything about the day was perfect. I was realistic with my expectations and figured one thing would have slipped, but nothing went wrong! Each and every one of our vendors blew us away, and I think my jaw dropped continuously as the details unfolded.

Marc and I entered our marriage with the type of memories we never could have anticipated from one single day. We knew if this was any indication of our upcoming life together, then we are in for a treat.

Candlelit Fall Wedding at The Foundry

A candlelit wedding at The Foundry sounds like the beginning to a very, very beautiful evening and my dears, that is what is on the agenda for today. As if the premise wasn’t romantic enough, the savvy couple added in vendors like Trent Bailey Photography, Rountree Flowers, Marcey Brownstein, Face Time Beauty, and SO many more that I haven’t been able to tear myself away from this gallery!

From the beautiful bride… We were so excited when we walked into the Foundry. It is a beautiful space with amazing character of its own so didn’t need a lot of decoration. We worked with Jessie from Rountree Flowers to create beautiful soft arrangements of mostly white and green. She used roses, ranunculus, large white amaryllis blossoms, magenta ranunculus for a little color and velvety gray dusty miller and sage green foliage and umbrella fern. We used tons of mercury glass votives and tapered candles and a delicately sparkling runner on the tables for a beautiful glow. We knew what we were going for, but when Jessie put it all together that night, it was so magical that it took my breath away when I walked in the room.

We didn’t have a theme for our wedding but New York and our combined culturally diversity were the focal points. New York is our home but we have roots in Jamaica, England, Ireland, Florida, Texas and Arizona. The food, bar and music were our best ways to honor all of that. We had people coming from all over the world to share our wedding with us so we wanted to show them the best party we could and encourage them to enjoy New York, so instead of a brunch the next day we took our family and out of towners to see Once on Broadway.

We had so much fun with our cocktail hour menu. Our caterer told us to pick our favorite things — it was our party! So we chose things like mini fish and chips, bite size bangers and mash, mini Texas pulled pork sliders… When we told our caterer we wanted to get Jamaican patties locally, they surprised us by researching and creating their own recipe to make us the cutest bite-size (and very authentic tasting) patties. And friends told us not only the food was delicious, but they could tell how much we put into it because it was so ‘us’.

My mom had the idea to surprise Colin with a special bourbon tasting bar because it’s his drink of choice, but he kept looking to add ‘just one more’ to the main bar. I eventually had to limit him just so he wouldn’t ruin the surprise. We ended up serving 7 different bourbons that night in total, but no one complained!

Our music choices were also really meaningful to us. My brother walked me down the aisle to “Caribbean Blue” by Enya because our late father loved Enya, and we later danced to a childhood favorite. Our recessional song was Bob Marley’s “Is This Love”, which just filled the room with happiness. It was the best feeling to turn around and see everyone dancing out behind us. Colin danced with his mom to their favorite Paul McCartney song and he and I danced to a country song. We watched a YouTube video over and over to learn how to two step, and had so much fun practicing in our apartment. We love that all these songs had meaning for us before, but even more so now. Our DJ was incredible — we gave him a list of favorites, but wanted him to do what he did best. He really played amazing surprises and had everyone dancing until the very last song.

We didn’t have a bridal party because we wanted everyone around us as part of our wedding, and we were able to include people in other really special ways. A close friend performed our ceremony and we asked couples whose relationships we admire to give advice that was incorporated into our ceremony. We had other family and friends serve as our witnesses, read poems, and give toasts. Our friend Ari led an amazing cocktail hour band, and our favors were New York City Maptote bags — a wedding gift from the founders who are childhood friends. It was an amazing feeling to have such special people playing parts in our wedding, not just watching it.

Trent & Dara, our photographers, helped us to decide to see each other before the wedding. The sun was setting early so we really wanted the amazing daylight photos we knew he would capture, but didn’t want to ruin the ‘moment’. That was some of the best advice we received. I was so jittery, but when I saw Colin I was filled this amazing calm and happiness, and to have that time together before the wedding was so special.

Some practical advice: don’t do your place cards the night before! If you do… print individual name cards multiple times and then write in or stamp numbers. That way when you have to move people around for whatever reason it would be a lot easier to change. A day of planner was essential, and ours was amazing. You do not want to be dealing with details. And stop and take it in. Everyone says it, but it really does go so fast.

Pink Wedding at Glen Island Harbour Club

Of all the weddings we feature on SMP, it’s always the rows of pink that steal my heart the fastest. With sweet girly touches around every corner and bright, Summery images to make you feel like the day couldn’t be anything other than perfect. With photography by Brklyn View, this is one of those weddings that I never want to let go of. Good thing there is more here in the galleries!

On a perfect day in August, Debra & Brad were married at the gorgeous Glen Island Harbor Club in New Rochelle, NY. Debra looked absolutely stunning in her beaded RK Bridal wedding gown and veil. She wore her sisters diamond blue earrings as her something borrowed and blue. In honor of Brad’s father, the groom wore a small photo pin of his dad to keep him close to his heart on their wedding day. The bridesmaids wore soft, flowy coral dresses with lush peach and cream bouquets. As the couple exchanged their wedding vows, there was not a dry among their guests. Debra and Brad are one of the sweetest and kindest couples I’ve ever met. They care more about each other than they do themselves and I’m so honored I could be there with them on their wedding day.

Queens County Farm Museum Wedding

When I was scouting locations for my own wedding we looked at totally off the beaten path places – like an old racetrack or a gorgeous piece of farmland. We ended up switching gears entirely for a city wedding but this bride totally stuck to her vision and guess what? Her wedding at Queens County Farm Museum turned out just a notch or two above perfections. Click her for more shots from Dutton + James.

From the bride…Even before Evan and I got engaged, we knew we wanted to have our wedding at the Queens County Farm Museum. We wanted something very non traditional that would really wow our guests, and we definitely accomplished that. The whole evening everyone asked “Where did you find this place?”. We received so many compliments on how beautiful and different it was. It was everything we had wished for and more.

The whole day was completely perfect. I can’t think of one thing that went wrong. The weather was absolutely amazing, it was sunny and 70 degrees. Our ceremony was timed perfectly with the sun setting over the fields of kale and lettuce. As soon as our ceremony started, one of the cows grazing in a nearby pasture came over to watch. It was like he knew exactly what was going on!

As a Fashion Designer, I chose my colors based completely on the J Crew “Dusty Shale” color. As soon as I saw it on their website, it totally inspired me and I based everything from the flowers, the linens, to the entire theme of the wedding around this color. I was obsessed. I did a lot of DIY, and Etsy purchases for the decor. The hand made birch cake stand, and birch card holders were from Etsy. The seller was so kind and easy to work with and was able to make anything I wanted. I found the table number chalk boards from Michael’s for $1 each! The menu chalkboard sign, my husband actually found on the side of the road and I coated it with some chalkboard paint, and hand wrote it myself. The other chalk board sign, we found in the garbage room of our building and I immediately took it and wrote “Eat, drink and be married” on it myself also.

I wanted our flowers to compliment the Dusty Shale color, but somehow make it seem more of a Fall color since we got married in September. I didn’t want the Dusty Shale to read too Spring, so Bridget from Violet and Verde was able to create the most gorgeous flowers with the hints of burgundy ranunculus and dahlias. She understood my ideas completely, and when I first saw the room set up with the flowers, I actually teared up with joy. I couldn’t have asked for more beautiful flower arrangements, and the chuppah was absolutely to die for.

The entire day was a complete success, and we were so overjoyed with how wonderful our wedding day turned out. We couldn’t have done it without such amazing vendors, and friends and family to be apart of our special day.

Classic Wedding Highlight Film at the Metropolitan Club

The way I look at it, a really good, beautiful wedding film can go one of two ways. The first requires boxes of tissues and a few minutes to touch up your mascara, and the second is this. Smiling so big your face hurts. That raise of the eyebrow at the very inside that means you’re seeing the most adorable couple in the world. Goosebumps. So many goosebumps. Thank you for sharing this beautiful couple Clark + Walker!

Colorful Brooklyn Wedding at The Liberty Warehouse

Industrial spaces are some of my favorite places ever to say “I do.”  I mean, besides the fact that they make one crazy cool backdrop, there’s just something about mixing romantic details with exposed brick walls and wooden beams that simply screams “amazing.”  Add in lush blooms by Michelle Edgemont and an entire gallery of beautiful images from Sara Wight and it’s serious perfection, lovelies.  See it here.

From the Bride… After finding out that the venue we were interested in was no longer holding weddings, we found The Liberty Warehouse through a few quick Google searches. We walked from our home in Carroll Gardens to Red Hook to visit The Liberty Warehouse on one of the first days of spring. After walking down the long stretch of warehouses, we were shocked at the beautiful views offered at the venue. We fell in love with the wooden beams and exposed brick, the overall feeling of industrial yet cozy.

Our wedding day was at the tail end of a brutal NYC heat wave, yet our close proximity to the water helped to cool everyone off. Michelle Edgemont decorated the space beautifully with bright, summery flowers. We said our vows under a gorgeous early evening sky with Kim Worley officiating a truly personal and meaningful ceremony. The rest of the night was spent eating delicious food and dancing on the constantly packed dance floor. Our photographer, Sara Wight, captured the energy and excitement of the night perfectly. At the end of the night we had ice cream sundaes from the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory carts. As a take-home treat there were key lime pies from Steve’s and pickles from Brooklyn Brine. We made a conscious effort to seek out vendors that were local, Brooklyn-based. Everything about the night felt like a true reflection of us as a couple and we had so much fun celebrating.

A Brooklyn Engagement

An engagement in New York City usually consists of drop dead gorgeous images that look like stills from a movie and this engagement is no exception. There’s just something about the combination of the city, the love, the talent of Ron Antonelli of Brian Dorsey Studios that really makes these images (especially this one!) shine bright. Click here for the full gallery.

From the very beginning, we knew that we wanted to have our engagement photos taken in Dumbo, Brooklyn. We live in Williamsburg and have been living in Brooklyn together for the past five years and love the aesthetics of “old New York” that can be found around Brooklyn. We specifically love Dumbo, since the location had everything we wanted in closer proximity to each other. Dumbo has so many different sceneries for one place, which really made it the ideal spot to capture us as a couple. We love spending time in Brooklyn and our photographer captured it perfectly – from the Brooklyn bridge, Tobacco warehouse, cobble stone streets to the carousal, graffiti on buildings and promenade. The idea was to capture the contrast between the historical aspects of the area and us having fun there. We spent about two hours one sunny and hot afternoon in August 2012 and though we were exhausted afterwards, it was well worth it. We ended the engagement shoot with some refreshing sorbet from Jacques Torres.

We both wore what resembled our everyday selves at our best. The shift dress I wore is from Theyskens’ Theory with tiny gold specks all over the dress paired with my favorite Louis Vuitton Mary Jane pumps. I love the platform that gives me height and the seriousness of the structured shoe is softened with the tiny patent strap with a small bow on the side. Marcos is wearing his typical Brooks Brother’s shirt and pants with his favorite skinny tie, from Ralph Lauren. We truly believe the images captured the joy and fun we had not only on that day, but everyday we spend together and hope that you enjoy the photos as much as we do.

Upstate New York Wedding with Cultural Infusion

Ever since the stunning work of Erich McVey first popped up on our radar, beautiful weddings have only ever followed. He tells a story through his lens in a way very few can, and today we’ve planned an entire Day o’ McVey to celebrate just that. First up – an upstate New York affair that perfectly embodies tradition with a twist. Planned in the hands of Events That Matter, this one is far too good to miss.

From Erich McVey… Brett and Kristin’s beautiful wedding day had a special energy. It was quiet and serene, but with a low rumble of excitement and anticipation. Filled to the brim with beautiful details, but also genuine and sincere. Both traditional and new. There was something so uniquely “Brett and Kristin” about the entire celebration that made it feel like you were witnessing an undeniably epic event just being there. The ceremony and reception reflected who they are both as a couple and as individuals, with family traditions, special dances, and music composed just for their wedding by a close friend’s band.

Brett and Kristin waited until the ceremony to see one another, which began with a meeting of the families for a blessing. Kristin’s father lead her down to where Brett and his parents waited. Together, Brett, Kristin and their families shared tears, laughter, hugs and and words of wisdom and blessing. They then walked together down the grassy hill to the ceremony site where their guests were seated. It was a beautiful way to begin a sacred ceremony, bringing the families together to share in the moment, walking as one, down to the wedding site.

After the beautiful ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktails and music by the pool, followed by an incredible dinner and a lot of dancing under their gorgeous Sperry tent. It was the perfect end to a beautiful day on a warm summer night. Friends laughing and dancing, families joining, and Brett and Kristin now married!

Modern Wedding in New York City

Where does the couple who met while traveling the globe decide to tie the knot? New York City, of course. Where cultures and travels and textures can beautifully mesh into a wedding that represents exactly who the couple is at heart. And this wedding – photographed by Huge Forte and designed by Bespoke Only – is the very definition of modern loveliness. Just make sure to check out all of the other details right here!

After both attending NYU (albeit at different times), later in their lives Mercedes and Paul joined foreign service separately and their paths fatefully crossed each other during their travelings around the world. In spring 2013, when the couple started planning their wedding as being stationed in Algiers, it was clear that there’s no better place to host the event other than New York, the city where all the loose threads traced back to. In the midst of the hostage and bombing crisis happening in Algeria, with our help the couple managed to plan this very New York affair in Dumbo with the unparallelled skyline as the ultimate backdrop.

With the vibrant creative energy and diversity, Dumbo was the perfect display of the current and buzzing New York to guests around the globe. Taking place in a lofty art gallery with tons of industrial architecture details, the wedding was all about the classic urban elements that represent classic NYC but remained fresh and contemporary. Special homage was paid to the couple’s artistic upbringing – black & white family photographs, works of the bride’s deceased photographer/bio engineer mother were incorporated as a gallery wall at the entrance, which was equally visually stunning and emotionally moving. The groom’s musician family performed harmoniously at the ceremony on the pebble beach under Manhattan Bridge – the graceful tune could not be veiled by any passing train noise. Iconic mid-century furniture pieces set up a modern lounge area. Nestled in a variety of matte black vessels, organically formed floral were done sparsely to keep up with the overall cool and relaxed atmosphere. Dogwood branches with hanging votive candles accentuated the height of ceiling and softened the rawness of the space.

Due to the nature of their jobs with constant traveling & moving involved, the goal was simple yet hard to achieve in their daily life – a dinner party to house all their dear ones in one place with exquisite food, wine, and the good times to be remembered and cherished in the many more years to come. With guests coming from all over the world, at the end of the night when the ice cream sandwich truck pulled over on the cobble stone street, it went without saying that everybody was having the best time as enjoying what New York city has to offer.

Classic NYC Museum Wedding

As a West Coaster who spends more than her fair share of time dreaming of NYC weddings, this gorgeous day captured by Jamie Lefkowitz is right up my alley.  It’s classic New York romance meets a sleek, sophisticated vibe meets one crazy cool setting (hello Society of Illustrators).  In other words, it’s pure, unadulterated pretty… and you can see every last moment right here in the full gallery.

From Jamie Lefkowitz PhotographyI was so honored to be asked to capture Chris and Laura’s wedding day. When we met early on in their planning, they knew they wanted an intimate and classic NYC wedding. Chris’ father is a member of the Society of Illustrators (SOI), which is a historic New York carriage house. SOI is located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan and has a rotating exhibit of famous illustrators (Maurice Sendak was on display the day of the wedding!). Upstairs, you enter into a timeless dining room which leads to a unique third floor terrace. I could not have imagined a more perfect space to meet Chris and Laura’s vision for their big day. Only a few blocks from the venue is Central Park, where we met the groom for the first look. Laura looked radiant in a sleek gown and Chris had a custom suit. The reception was filled with candles and rose centerpieces which created an intimate and romantic setting. The guest embraced their inner illustrator with a guest book to sketch and write well wishes to the newlyweds. It was truly a beautiful wedding and the bride and groom were smiling throughout the day.

From the Bride…  Chris and I are at the point in our lives in which we attend a lot of weddings. When we got engaged, we already had a sense of what we did and did not want to have at our own event. The number one thing we wanted to avoid was fuss, so we tried to keep everything as low key as possible. I was very fortunate in that my mother was enthusiastic about research and planning. Although I feel like all of the pieces just came together, she might disagree! Chris and I felt strongly about having our wedding in a location that would not require our guests to drive. Since his father is a member of the Society of Illustrators, we lucked out with a perfect venue in Manhattan. We found our vendors easily through recommendations of friends and colleagues. Jamie, our photographer, really guided us through the entire process and referred us to some great people. We really just let all of the professionals do their jobs and let the evening happen. It was gratifying to see all of our assorted friends and family members socializing and enjoying the night!
