Organic Brooklyn Wedding

Truth be told, I sort of want to be besties with this Brooklyn bride. She’s a rule-breaker in the most stylish of ways – hosting an ALL-white wedding Labor Day weekend – and you know what? The results were crazy kinds of fabulous. Christina Szczupak tagged along for a day of organic-driven design and you can see every lovely shot from her lens right here.

From the Bride… My husband, Adam, and I met in law school. While we knew each other our first year, we weren’t particularly friendly and as our second year was getting underway, we were both seemingly on separate paths. Then, over winter break, while most people were still gone, the two of us found ourselves in the law library working on individual projects; Adam on moot court and myself – I honestly can’t remember.

What I do remember though was how funny he was; how charming and patient he was; and how diligent and dedicated he was to his work while most everyone else was still enjoying winter break. As our second semester got underway, we found ourselves hanging out in the library frequently for study breaks. Then we found ourselves sharing a late night post-study beer and maybe some dinner. I think there was a tiramisu in the mix at some point as well. Once it became clear that our current relationships were over, our dating became an inevitable end. Being in law school, we chose to keep our relationship quiet for the first few months. When a good friend of mine speculated who I was dating, she immediately said “if its Adam, they are totally getting married.”

After graduation, dating became studying for the bar together, then moving in together, then dealing with a poor economy together and then a charming engagement in Saugerties, New York. That friend of mine who “called it” was with us on our wedding day! Adam and I have had such adventures together and we’re so excited for the adventures to come!

When Adam and I decided to be married on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, I immediately wanted to throw a white party to rival P.Diddy’s. I knew that white was a taboo wedding color, but many of the magazines and blogs had shown white wedding parties and I figured why not spread the love! I would also get pumped when I thought about how incredible everyone would look in white. Despite some hesitation from my fiancee and mom, I eventually convinced them of the ingenuity of a white wedding and they agreed with some compromise.

We encouraged guests to wear white or whatever they felt best in, which they did and everyone was pleased with the outcome. We wanted the wedding to have a sophisticated and ethereal feel without being stuffy so we focused on making it feel like a garden party with feminine touches in a rustic and industrial space. We also live in Brooklyn and had the wedding in Brooklyn, so it naturally turned into a kind of secondary theme as well. In the end, I could not have imagined a more stunning affair. Our wedding planner and all of our vendors did an incredible job – the flowers, the food, the DJ, the venue – everything was perfect! I only wish we could do it again!

When I first thought about the gown in which I would be married, I imagined I’d wear something understated, feminine and wispy. I had my eye on a Rosa Clara dress that I thought was perfect; it had sheer draped fabric and piece that wrapped around the shoulders in a modest but sophisticated way. My friend’s salon carried the dress and I had planned on trying it on when my mom and mother-in-law-to-be could both be in NYC with me.

Before that would happen though, I was dying to go to the bridal salon in Birmingham, Michigan that I had passed almost every day growing up. No one finds a dress at the first store they go to though, so I thought I’d try on some beautiful dresses that weren’t quite right and call it a day. On a grey day in July, my mom, my middle sister and I walked into the Michigan salon. We picked out some dresses to try and the day got started. We soon realized, as each dress was more incredible than the last, that we may be in over our heads. We liked this about one and that about another, but as I suspected, none were just right. Based on what we’d liked and disliked I tried on one last Lazaro dress. It was truly spectacular, but my mother-in-law-to-be wasn’t with us, this was the first place we had gone and it was the COMPLETE opposite of the ethereal understated dress I had in mind.

Despite my concerns, my mom and sister urged me to agree with them that this was the dress and the next thing I knew, we walked out with the receipt to my brand new statement piece wedding dress – sans mother-in-law-to-be approval or knowledge. I’ll admit I was a little disappointed and worried that I’d made a mistake. I’ll also admit that in the months leading up to the wedding, my sister felt so guilty, believing she and my mom had pressured me into buying a dress that wasn’t “me.” I never tried on the Rosa Clara dress and notwithstanding all these original doubts – as soon as I started my fittings and when the details of the wedding started coming together, I knew that my sister and mom had been right and that this dress was absolutely the dress! The night of our wedding, while everything was beautiful, there was little that stood out more than my dress. It was unique and stunning and I truly cannot imagine being married in any other dress!

Classic Buffalo Wedding

This, loves, is classic elegance done oh-so-right; a fairytale-esque day with the most beautiful traditional details woven throughout.  Think lush blooms by Flowers by Johnny playing nice with fabulous paper goods from French Press Design Studio and a Romona Keveza gown that will take your breath away.  See every beautiful moment captured by Ayres Photography in the full gallery.

From the Bride… I grew up in Buffalo, and because most of my family was there, and most of his family and our friends were within driving distance, we decided that it would be a good geographic fit. When I was a kid, my mom used to take my brother and me on weekend outings to the historic places in Buffalo, and I remember looking at the Mansions and thinking, ‘I would love to get married in a place like that.’  Little did I know that one day, one of those grand old homes would actually be the location of my wedding!

We had a hard time choosing a venue, since I wanted classic elegance and Ken wanted a less formal outdoor feel. Lucky for us, Buffalo had both to offer. The Butler Mansion had beautiful gardens for an outdoor ceremony and cocktail hour, while The Statler gave me the ‘wow’ factor I was looking for. We decided to do both, and show our guests all of the great things Buffalo had to offer.

While planning the details, everything was focused on favorite things. We had assorted craft beers and a cigar bar for Ken, and plenty of champagne and French macaroons for me. One of my favorite touches was the assortment of hors d’oeuvres at the cocktail hour. As a nod to all the places we’ve lived, we had a deconstructed Buffalo wing (for my childhood), a mini Maryland crab cake (Ken used to spend summers on the Eastern shore), mini lobster BLTs (we met in college in Boston), and blackened beef tostadas (we currently live in Texas).

There were countless other little touches that made the day special for us. The gladiolas in my bouquet, Ken’s boutonnière, and our ceremony arrangements were a nod to my great grandmother. They were her favorite flower and are a favorite of all the women in my family. We also chose to include wedding pictures from all the couples in our families on the gift table. The cake, an almond cake with raspberry filling from Muscoreil’s, was the same type I used to request for my birthday when I was a kid, and the detailed band matched the belt on my dress.

The color scheme (creams, golds and navy) was based on one of my favorite outfits, and the bridesmaids dresses were from my favorite clothing store, J.Crew. Scarves are my favorite accessory, and all the bouquets were tied with unique silk scarves in the same color scheme. Ken designed some of the stationery items, and the vintage Rolls Royce was his one non-negotiable. Despite the lack of air conditioning, I wouldn’t have taken our first married ride in any other way.

All the details and planning were obviously perfect, but what really made the day was the moments with family and friends. My mother and brother arranged a surprise recessional – my brother’s a capella group drove up from Cornell to sing ‘All You Need is Love’, recreating a scene from one of my favorite movies, Love Actually, and my maid of honor’s speech made me tear up. Once the music started, we never left the dance floor. My Uncle led a whole group rendition of ‘Thriller’, and both of our families came together for ‘We Are Family’.

The whole day was a success because we took everything in stride. At the end of the day, we were both married to our best friend, and that was all that mattered.

From the Bride…Choosing the date: We were engaged in April and didn’t want a long engagement, but had a lot of friends weddings before the end of the year, making things difficult. We agreed to not get married the week before or after any of our friends which literally left us one date where we could have an outdoor reception, and amazingly it worked out! However, it meant only four months of planning…

John’s parents have a house about 15 minutes from the church where I was baptized so it was the first and last place we even considered. We were SO lucky the church was available on the weekend we wanted given how little time we had! It was meant to be.

John gave his groomsmen tartan shoes as a tribute to his father’s Scottish heritage (we also had a bag piper for the same reason!). They were a surprise and everyone loved them! John’s parents walked down to the aisle to the Star Wars theme as a surprise after his dad had walked down the aisle to it at John’s parent’s wedding. We didn’t do our own vows because neither of us had any chance of getting through them without crying so we wrote each other notes to read before the wedding, which of course made me cry after I had had my makeup done. Both of my grandmothers were there (one who is 101!) which was extremely meaningful given that the rest of our grandparents are no longer with us.

One memory that sticks out is when I was too eager and said I do way before I was meant to. Driving to the church alone with my dad was so special and a moment I will never forget. I also loved that my mom was with me the whole day hanging out with my friends – she was up for anything and made me laugh the whole day. Our first dance to Wanted (by Hunter Hays) will always be one of my favorite parts our wedding because despite 200 people watching, it still felt like a private moment between us. And how can I forget my dad singing My Girl during the reception?? From his amazing voice, to his fatherly, but surprisingly great dance moves, to his ad libbing, he was incredible and a highlight of the whole night.

I wore a bracelet John’s parents gave me when we got engaged and one of my maid’s of honor’s diamond earrings, which I was totally scared of losing all night!

I thought I was being an easy bride by telling my two maids of honor that I just wanted a slate dress and that they could get it from wherever and they didn’t have to be the same. It ended up being such a pain for them and I felt terrible but they ended up in DVF gorgeous long navy dresses and looked incredible!

I didn’t want a big wedding party, so since I don’t have a sister I chose the two closest to it. My best friend from high school, McDonogh, was my maid of honor and my best friend from college, the University of Michigan, was my Matron of Honor (which I think is a silly distinction, but I guess that’s how to justify having two!)

I wore Jimmy Choo for the actual wedding, but my favorites were my red Valentino after party shoes, which sadly, I wore for about five minutes. Making sure I bought shoes that I would be able to wear forever was important, so no regrets. I’ve worn both since!

I think my favorite personal touch was the table names. John and I had been to Telluride numerous times over the four years prior to our wedding (and John for many more) and we absolutely love being there together so we named all the tables after our favorite ski runs, restaurants and bars (which was a surprise to everyone, even our parents). We had the names calligraphed on chalk board framed in wood so they are a perfect memento for us from the wedding. We have ours, “The Plunge”, a ski run on the mountain, in our apartment now. The other detail we spent a lot of time on was the music that was played by the string quartet at the church. They played everything from Bach, to Coldplay to Carly Ray Jepson. We wanted to make sure our guests were entertained. I’m just sad I missed it! (I walked down the aisle to Here Comes the Sun by the Beatles).

Décor The church on its own is incredibly picturesque, John’s parents house has an credible view of the water and we had a beautiful Sperry tent so we were pretty set from the beginning! I am obsessed with flowers so roses and tulips were essential and with lots of candles we had all we needed!

Traditional Alder Manor Wedding

I adore historic homes.  And by “adore,” I mean I am completely, totally, once was a tour guide obsessed. So give me a gorgeous wedding held at a mansion filled with history (I’m talking to you, Alder Manor) and you’ll see a blogger who is the epitome of happy.  Now add in an adorable duo and the talented Yellow Hook Productions to that already fabulous setting and… wow.  Press play to see what I mean.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/72374099 600 338]

From Yellow Hook Productions… The wedding took place in June at the Alder Manor Mansion in Yonkers, New York. Vanessa (originally from Puerto Rico) and Nathan (from England) met in acting school and wanted their DIY wedding to have a touch of old-Hollywood charm. The day included a garden ceremony,
strung lights on the mansion patio, chandeliers, projected films, a Bentley limousine, a banquet-hall dinner, an elaborate choreographed first-dance, and a sparkler-wielding crowd seeing them off.

The old mansion and grounds were incredibly picturesque in a worn-and-weathered kind of way. The crowd was a lively mix of people flying in all the way from England and Puerto Rico – some of whom hadn’t seen the couple in years – and their personalities are palpable on camera.

From Betty Brooklyn Catering… As a caterer, one of my favorite challenges is making sure that the food I create for clients not only tastes good, but also complements their overall wedding style. It’s really about making something that is pleasing to both the stomach and the eye. This inspiration wedding photo shoot was a fun chance to collaborate closely with local vendors that I’ve become friends with over the years, including Kerry Quade, a talented event and floral designer with over 25 years of industry experience and Josh Strauss Weddings, whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with several times since I started my business in 2009. We often work with brides who are looking for a sophisticated vibe, but with a bit of surprise and edge sneaked in. In that vein, Kerry and I were inspired by the Green Buildings speakeasy, a hidden side room just right for a couple to sneak off for a private toast post-ceremony. It was our jumping off point; this idea of romantic irreverence carried through the shoots overall Gatsby-esque design. We opted to incorporate a rich silky lapis blue with a tablescape void of traditional flowers. The shoots inspiration freed Kerry to consider whimsical decor that did not depend on large, blooming flower bouquets. Instead, she let the designs textures and colors provide the styles vibrant energy. She incorporated terrariums and sea urchin shells to create visual surprise; together they really bolster the shoots playful and worldly vibe. In addition, so many talented vendors lent their skills and products in helping us create this overall vision. We absolutely fell in love with a royal lounger from Patina Rentals; it is a statement piece that creates an organic space for guests to lounge and mingle. Hand letterpressed invitations from Lion in the Sun, a local Park Slope-based paperie, incorporated the shoots shade of blue and echoed its spirit. Our friends at BroadwayParty rentals raised the style quotient and referenced the Art Deco era with their addition of silver rimmed china and beaded silver chargers. Our model bride, with hair and makeup styling by the talented of Anni Bruno of NYC Faces modeled several gorgeous dresses designed by The White Gown, with streamlined, timeless silhouettes. From a caterers standpoint, I was so excited to work with this color palette. While white or cream linen is always a popular choice, I am in love with the shoots blue shade and how it complemented our vibrant menu. I really wanted my food to reflect the playfulness of our color choice. Keeping in touch with the fresh, tongue-in-cheek vibe, I deconstructed the elements of our caraway and carrot soup to rest on its surface to give a maximum visual effect. For summer, I also offered grilled mackerel, shrimp ceviche, and a coconut mango rice salad to round out a deliciously wholesome menu brimming with color and flavor. It was wonderful to end the day with a nightcap of Breuckelen Distillings whiskey, sipped from white teacups prohibition-style.

Romantic Gramercy Park Hotel Wedding

The Gramercy Park Hotel is the sort of place where romance oozes out of every corner, with a terrace turned garden paradise with views of one of the world’s most amazing cities.  In other words, it’s a place where saying “I do” is everything… and if you need proof, just lay your eyes on this beauty from CLY CREATION.  It’s gorgeous blooms from Occasion 9 meets all kinds of pretty.  See it here.

From the Bride… It was a perfect and enchanting summer’s night. Warm candlelight, lots of laughs, beautiful souls, good friends and family, and last but not least, my other puzzle piece who has always been the summer of my life.

Every time I visited the terrace at the top of Gramercy Park Hotel, I always imagined that my wedding would be held here, full of green trees and with the city’s backdrop where we fell in love and shared our adventures. When we got engaged and started to plan our wedding, I couldn’t think of any venues other than the terrace. I am very sensitive to the atmosphere of a particular setting or location… many of my fondest memories are intimately linked with the feeling around a place or surrounding. The terrace was just like a little gem with the perfect feeling for me. The space is very intimate yet open through the wide retractable glass roof. It is rustic with votive candles and bamboo chairs, yet modern and edgy with a major contemporary art collection including works by Damien Hirst, George Condo, and even young hip artists such as Dan Colen.

I wanted my wedding theme to be soft, dreamy and romantic. Our color theme was made up of soft pastel hues like light french blue, warm white, soft greens, with touches of blushed pink and peach. I pictured a garden in the summertime. Our flowers were natural looking, loose arrangements of Dahlia, Ranuculus, Mazolica, small Zinnia, Camomile, as well as different kinds of wild flowers and greeneries. We also had small vases with single-typed flowers including garden Roses and my favorite, Baby’s Breath.

Another important theme I wanted in my wedding preparation was happiness and good people. Our vendors weren’t big name companies. They were all very, very talented and we were able to work with them very closely. We are so thankful to our amazing photographers, Chung and Annie, our talented make-up artist, Eunjung, the cheerful Occasion 9 florist team in Chelsea, the delightful pastry chef Judy of Silk Cakes in the Lower East Side, and our chic DJ.

Whenever I reminisce about our wedding… it is just like a happy dream in a summer’s night.

Cultural Wedding at The Foundry

If ever there were a sweet couple meant for The Foundry‘s rustic bare beauty, this bride and groom would be it. They took their cultural backgrounds, layered in color and elegance and the result is a vibrant day with touches of grace. Click here for so much more from Karen Wise Photography.

From Mario Rivera, Lifestyle Event GroupCamille and Jonathan’s concept for their wedding developed over time. They knew they wanted a Spring rustic and elegant wedding, however, during the process we learned more about the couple which revealed a lot about their current relationship and what their union would signify; the joining of their own little families to become one big family and their deep but very different cultural roots.

The Foundry in Long Island City, a beautiful bare venue built during the 19th century was found to host Camille and Jonathan’s day of events. Their ceremony highlighted both cultures, Jonathan’s mother flew plumerias and orchids in from Hawaii to put together traditional Samoan leis for the bridal party, and Camille’s mother chose a poem written by her favorite Puerto Rican poet that she read in Spanish and English to the wedding guests.

For their reception, the design of the room highlighted the bride’s desire for a graceful rustic wedding. Guests sat at mahogany wood tables adorned with antique glass, spring flowers, ambient candle lighting and handmade kraft paper menus to display the family style menu selection. Our chef composed a menu that carefully combined cuisine from both sides of their worlds for guests to enjoy as a family.

Guests danced the night away under the incandescent lighting, took silly pictures in the photo booth, soaked in the views of the city from the rooftop garden and enjoyed the groom’s family’s special Samoan performance.

Classic NYC Wedding

It doesn’t get much cooler than a classic NYC wedding.  Well, until you set it against a fabulous City Hall Restaurant setting and infuse cultural significance into each and every moment.  That, my friends, turns any classic wedding into a day that is the epitome of stunning and when you add an entire gallery of lovely from Melissa Kruse, it makes everything that much better.  See it all here.

From Melissa Kruse Photography… This couple was all about three things: family, personal touches, and New York City. Both Anajli and Scott moved to the big city to jump start their careers, and it was there that they went on their first date, started their first home, and yes, said “I do.”

“We love the idea of classic New York,” said Anjali excitedly to me during our first meeting. From the very beginning it was all about black and white with touches of red… and no detail went unnoticed on the day of the wedding. From Saturday’s New York Times in their hotel rooms to portraits through the streets of NYC (yellow cabs, man holes, and all!).

But as big a place as New York can be, and as long a guest list as they had, they somehow managed to have the most intimate wedding. With family traveling from across the country, the vows, the toasts, the hugs, the smiles – every single one was so warm, so genuine, and so completely candid. Personal touches were everywhere, from stunning bouquets created by the bride’s mother, a mini meditation session just before the first look, a family heirloom engagement ring, and a ceremonial remembrance gong.

And to top it off, when Anjali told me she’d be weaving an homage to her Indian heritage through the details of their day, I all but turned to jello. It was the sweetest music to this all-things-from-India-addict’s ears. So with the bindi, henna, bangles, and red accents in lieu of the traditional red dress (a white dress was a must for this modern bride) I was in definitely in my happy place.

Traditional Manhattan Wedding

It never fails: I see the breathtaking work of Karen Wise and my entire heart turns to putty.  It’s just one of those givens in my day to day here at SMP, and this beautiful Manhattan affair?  I want it.  From the gorgeous stylings of James Abel Events to that stunning gown from Gabriella New York Bridal Salon to the bride whose smile lights up the entire room, it’s pure perfection.  See it all here.

And an amazing film from Clark + Walker Studio

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/58580161 600 338]

From James Abel Events… When Dana and Stu were beginning to plan their wedding, there were several things that were important to them. Creating a fun, relaxed yet interesting environment for their guests was top on their list. Angel Orensanz was the perfect location with its unique architectural details and its wonderful open space. They decided to do long tables with white flowers. A “pop” of a russet color was used throughout the wedding including invitations and flowers to mirror Dana’s amazing red hair.

With Stu’s love of Steve McQueen and Dana’s of Audrey Hepburn, these elements were definitely going to be incorporated. During the cocktail hour, classic movies of both of these Hollywood icons were shown in the background. Finally, Stu’s other love… Bourbon! A variety of boutique bourbons were set up for guests to do tasting at their leisure. Overall, this wedding was one of the most unique, that totally embraced the couple and their interests.

Modern Long Island City Wedding

Despite an awe-inducing love story literally made for the movies (read: summer camp sweethearts), when it came to wedding planning, this gorgeous bride had one priority in mind: absolutely no “wedding cheesiness.”  To help orchestrate her vision, she hired the uber-talented VAvoom Events to create a chevron meets gold meets modern dream come true.  See it all captured by Hannah Persson right here.

And a crazy cool film from Orr Bortman

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/78463287 600 338]

From the Bride… Throughout our 16-month long engagement and planning process, my mind changed several times, but one thing always remained: I was trying to avoid as much wedding cheesiness as possible. The problem with that, however, was that the story of how Jesse and I met just oozes “aww’s” and “ahh’s.” My now-husband and I met when we were 12 and 14, respectively, at sleep-away summer camp in upstate Massachusetts. We were smitten back then but that relationship quickly faded as most pre-teen summer flings tend to do. Go ahead, get the “aww’s” out of your system now!

Fast forward about 15 years, and through the magic of Facebook we reconnected. After about 10 months of dating, Jesse proposed to me on a beautiful balcony overlooking the ocean in Mexico. We were over-the-moon.

After returning home and feeling very overwhelmed, we knew we needed help and immediately hired our amazing wedding planner, Amanda Pierce from VaVoom Events. Amanda totally “got” my vision of a (non-cheesy) New York City whimsical wedding day and pointed me in the direction of Studio Square Events, an amazing loft-like event space in Long Island City with floor to ceiling views of the Manhattan skyline. Jesse and I knew this was our place. As a bonus, the ground floor is an open to the public outdoor beer garden which was perfect for our September wedding after-party.

Studio Square also works exclusively with Sterling Caterers, who truly and deliciously fulfilled our vision of eclectic NYC-style cuisine (complete with a Bacon Bar in cocktail hour and NYC street cart dinner station).

Next, we began the search for a photographer who could capture our day in the not-so-typical fashion we craved. Again at the suggestion of Amanda, we found Hannah Persson after seeing several of her weddings featured on Style Me Pretty, and immediately fell in love with her artsy style and upbeat, infectious personality. Check.

The rest of the planning process was a blur of Pinterest, google searches, chevron, chevron, and more chevron. And as a little homage to my golf-obsessed hubby, we planned a little surprise for him during the reception – a full putting green setup complete with personalized golf balls.

Our wedding day really was everything we hoped it would be and so, so much more. We are so lucky to have found and worked with the vendors we worked with, as they truly made our dreams come true. We could not have asked for a more perfect day.

From Hannah Persson… I was so excited when Ali the bride, and Amanda, the event planner/designer called me, saying they had seen my work on Style Me Pretty and had to have me shoot the wedding! As soon as I began to hear about all the details — the jumbo balloons, the chevron aisle runner, the pink champagne with gold sugar rims, the L-O-V-E balloons, the GORGEOUS venue Studio Square — I was anticipating this day from the get-go! It’s an added bonus for the photog when everything takes place in one space. The awesome videographer and I were running up and down floors – it was really cool that the cocktail hour space, the ceremony, and the reception each had it’s own floor in the awesome converted warehouse in the upcoming LIC. The bride got ready at the W Manhattan, and then we did the perfect photoshoot at Gantry Park with the vintage Pepsi Cola sign. Everything was planned to perfection because of Amanda at VAvoom events. She really outdid herself with this one, and we are all so happy with the day. It couldn’t have been more magical. Witnessing the sun set behind the beautiful Manhattan skyline was one of the coolest wedding experiences I’ve had. And the couple is so incredibly sweet, along with their entire family. Pretty perfect day.

Glamorous East Hampton Wedding

As a West Coaster, I’ve never actually ventured to the Hamptons (I know, it’s a total travesty), but judging from this gorgeous Montauk affair, it’s exactly where I want to get married.  Because if my wedding day is even one tenth as glamorous and gorgeous as this stunning day is, I’ll consider myself seriously blessed. See it all captured beautifully by Jonathan Young Weddings right here.

And a beautiful film from Tweed Weddings… amazing.

From the Bride… For years Montauk has been our favorite place to escape to. We live in Manhattan but find ourselves venturing out there as often as we can. Having vacationed there for many years with his family, Richie introduced me to “The East End” the first year we started dating and I was immediately smitten. There is something about being out east, especially on the cliffs of Montauk, that makes you feel as though you are at the end of the earth. It’s awe-inspiring and magical.  Richie proposed to me at the base of the cliff at Montauk’s lighthouse. So when the time came to start planning our wedding, we knew “The East End” was the perfect spot — we felt like it represented us equally and we were eager to share such a special place with our family and friends.

Our wedding ceremony was held at St. Therese of Lisieux in Montauk, a beautiful airy church that overlooks both the village of Montauk and the ocean. Our reception was held in East Hampton at really neat venue, East Hampton Point. Originally East Hampton was not at all part of our plan, but that quickly changed with our first visit to EHP – it was the perfect space and captured just what we were looking for. Its chic and timeless, yet modern, and provides just the right dose of nautical charm. We couldn’t have wished for a better venue or setting.

Since not only the reception venue, but our entire wedding weekend was basically set on the water, I didn’t want to play into the nautical theme too much – it spoke for itself. Instead I opted to keep our overall vision classic with tiny touches of glamour strewn throughout. I wanted it to have the look and feel of a true affair. It all came together seamlessly thanks to our wonderful vendors, all of whom I cannot speak of highly enough!

Planning a wedding without a “planner” or “day-of coordinator” can definitely be tricky, stressful and often very overwhelming. Thankfully our families and friends were very helpful throughout the entire process. Some of my favorite details were the most personal. My mom hand-wrote the calligraphy for our invitations, place-cards and other paper goods. My parents created a Gaelic inspired wedding sign (a nod to both of our Irish heritages) to help our guests find their way, and many endless hours of ribbon tying, letter stamping and other personal touches were generously donated by our families and a few close friends.

The day itself could not have been more spectacular. The weather cooperated, our mass was beautiful (a personal family friend presided over our vows), and our reception was a complete blast.  The dance floor was packed throughout the night, which is exactly what we was hoping for, the food was unbelievable and toasts so full of love and laughs. What was most remarkable however, was the fact that the most special people in our lives were there for us in that one place – a rarity that we will always treasure. There is only one thing I would change. If I could, I would have the day last twice as long. It truly was THE. BEST. DAY. EVER.

From Brian Dorsey StudiosAlex and Katie met six years ago through mutual friends while both were living in NYC. They quickly began seriously dating and fell in love. Alex proposed on a beach in Mexico and Katie began the wedding planning right away. While Alex grew up in New York, Katie came from Florida but once falling in love in the city, she knew she wanted a classic New York City wedding. From the moment she walked into the Metropolitan Club, Katie knew this was the place. The gold gilded ceilings, rich red hues, and the grandeur of the dining rooms set the tone for the entire event. They wanted the architecture to glow with candle light, and the space filled with soft white flowers that would compliment the architecture of the building.

The ceremony was held at Columbia University’s St. Paul’s Chapel, a University that is very important to Alex’s family. Because Katie is Catholic and Alex is Jewish, a joint ceremony was held in the church, combining both religious traditions. The Chuppa was designed with trees and hanging white flowers, and the same glow of candle light that would fill the Metropolitan Club later in the evening.

Pink + Purple Wolffer Estate Vineyard Wedding

When your engagement story starts with seeking shelter from the rain in a Tiffany’s, the act that follows is bound to be romantic and beautiful, and this wedding was. With Brian Dorsey Studios on the job, every single image is perfection embodied, and we’ve put everything from the Village Invites to the glowy exit, in this beautiful gallery!

From the stunning bride… Dan and I began dating in 2007 as University of Virginia undergrads, and in 2012, during a rainy July weekend in East Hampton, we dashed into Tiffany’s to escape a downpour — and who could resist trying on engagement rings? Dan observed I loved the round solitaires and discreetly noted my size. One month later, over drinks in Madrid during our August vacation, he pulled the perfect ring from his pocket and popped the question, receiving a resounding “yes”!

Now the hunt was on for the ideal wedding venue. When we toured Wolffer Estate in Sagaponack, NY, a working vineyard with a stylish tasting room, we saw it had the very atmosphere we wanted for our wedding: rustic and relaxed, yet beautiful and elegant.

One year later, on September 21, 2013, Wolffer provided the perfect setting for our big day. The late afternoon ceremony was in the vineyard, with clusters of ripe grapes hanging on the vines; this was followed by a cocktail hour on the adjacent lawn, where guests sipped Wolffer’s Cabernet Franc and a string quartet played Sinatra classics; supper was served on the open-air veranda, followed by dancing in the Italianate tasting room, to pop tunes spun by our terrific DJ, Ray Jarrell.

Our design decisions for the event were inspired by Wolffer’s glorious fall beauty. Jeff Pennington of Southampton NY was our floral designer, and his arrangements reflected the lush ‘Indian summer’ feeling of Wolffer in late September. The flowers included dahlias, scabiosa, calla lilies, and orchids in brilliant wines and purples offset with blue and green; these were flanked on the tables by compotes of pears, figs and tiny green tomatoes; and he placed trees hung with candles in amber glass pendants in the tasting room. I picked Vera Wang’s “Diedre” wedding dress, because its jagged organza ruffles had a country-chic vibe, and the spiced wine bridesmaids’ dresses stood out dramatically against the dark green vines. Lighting designer Matt Murphy installed wrought iron chandeliers on the veranda and lights that shimmered in the vines after sunset.

We couldn’t have done it without our wonderful event planner, Jill Gordon, who helped create the rustic yet elegant feeling we wanted. For the wedding supper she helped me choose gold-rimmed formal china and crystal, rich golden napkins, and dark purple menus with gold calligraphy, which contrasted with the roughhewn farm tables, burlap table runners, and craft place cards tied with raffia and rosemary sprigs. Calligraphied silver gray escort cards were placed on garden stakes in Jeff Pennington’s pave arrangement of jewel-colored hydrangeas, and the thick creamy icing of caterer Fresh Flavors’ carrot wedding cake was adorned with simple spider plants. Jill set up fun photo booth accessories, a basket of pashminas, and a late night Hamptons Popcorn bar, and she provided guests with wands of streamers to wave us to our vintage silver Rolls getaway car. Our good-bye gift for guests was a half-bottle of Wolffer Chardonnay.

It was amazing to have all our family and friends share our wedding celebration, and we felt photographer Chris Owyoung, of Brian Dorsey Studios, completely captured our joyous mood. The one thing we couldn’t have arranged in advance was the full harvest moon that hung in the sky over Wolffer that night, providing a perfect end to an incredible day.

From a Guy + A Girl… On a particularly bright Sunday morning, we arrived in red hook, Brooklyn and were greeted by NYC royalty…none other than the venue’s namesake, Ms. Liberty, herself. There she stood, about 2 miles out across New York’s Upper Bay, in all her glory.

Before heading upstairs to greet the beautiful bride, Tamar, co-host of the day with her groom to be, Aron, we walked through the high-ceilinged reception room. Tamar’s creativity and consideration could be found in the perfect placement of each vintage book stack and re-purposed antique vase within her table centerpiece decor; Tamar’s sweet, unique personality was in the perfect buttons she added to make her already jaw-dropping dress, even more special. It was in the veil she designed and the invitations she conceptualized and constructed, herself. This bride attended to every detail to ensure a “vintage and rustic feel, and most importantly a low-key and somewhat whimsical atmosphere” (her original vision, as quoted from our first correspondence).

We are, of course, biased, but from a photographic point of view, the day was exactly as Tamar + Aron described it to us, nine months earlier…and more. it was warm and whimsical and light-hearted…while at the same time, it was wildly festive and fun, emotional and over-flowing with joy. A perfect reflection of a truly incredible pair.

Colorful Indian Wedding at Tribeca Rooftop

The level of prettiness in this wedding is insane.  I mean, the vibrant hues alone are enough to spend days obsessing over, but add in the talents of Cynthia Pesce EventsJuan Villanueva Designs and Brian Dorsey Studios + a whole host of heartwarming moments and, wow.  I didn’t know weddings could be this good. Click here for sooo much more.

From the Bride… Sam and I met the way a lot of people from our generation meet, online on E-Harmony! We matched on the site, and I reached out to him first, though he always says “You just got to e-mailing me first. I had my eye on you and was going to e-mail you but you beat me to it!” Our first date was really magical (as cheesy as it sounds); we just met for a drink at The Archive right after work, but we hit it off right from the start and felt a comfort and ease and intrigue with each other that we had never felt before. One drink turned into dinner and then dancing. Sam even met my best friend on our first date, and got the approval right away!

On our one year anniversary, Sam proposed. We spent the day at the American Museum of Natural History, which had a really fun Butterfly exhibit where you were in a room with all these live stunning butterflies and they would sit all around and on you. Then we went for a stroll through Central Park and ate a delicious eight course meal at Picholine. Sam wanted to propose that night, but after a heavy meal with wine pairings, I fell asleep on the cab ride home. So the next morning, as we were getting ready to go explore Storm King for the day, he asked me to grab something on the bed that he forgot, and there was the ring box! I was so excited and shocked, and full of butterflies! It was a perfect weekend!

Both of us come from big Indian families, and we wanted to have a lot of the fun Indian traditions that mean a lot to our parents and us, but also we wanted a more chill, modern vibe to our wedding as well. So, we went with a kind of Indian meets NYC urban rustic type of feel. We cared most about the music, good food and drinks, and wanted our guests on the dance floor with us for the majority of the wedding! And that’s what happened luckily, a fun big dance party with awesome music (thanks to Bigg Romeo). We had so much fun and spent the majority of the night on the dance floor with each other and our family and friends, and were so happy all night long! One of my favorite moments was when Sam (who plays bass in a metal band) and two of his band-mates joined the wedding band – lots of head banging and awesomeness all around (he is so talented that hubby of mine!).

From Exquisite Affairs Productions… The bride, a Long Island Native and the groom, from Vermont, wanted to make sure they incorporated their roots throughout their wedding.

The guests were greeted by cheeses from Vermont upon the reception, before guests left for the evening with smiles spanning their faces, they were treated to a slice of cake and a bag of coffee from Blue Bottle.

We remembered their loved ones with white balloons, guests showed their love by circling words in a dictionary to describe Shawna and Wes.

The bride, a fashionista and television personality, wore a stunning couture gown with swoon-worthy blue suede shoes.

New York City Engagement Session

We all know that New York City is one of the coolest places on the planet… that’s a fact.  But throw in an adorable duo who are super excited to say “I do” and a day of lovely captured by Theo Milo and it becomes one of the most romantic places on earth, as well.  Greatest city on earth?  We think so.  See all of the lovely right here.

From the Bride… Even though Peter and I will be getting married next year in my home state of North Carolina, we both liked the idea of getting our engagement photos taken in NYC. Manhattan has always been the backdrop to our relationship and now it is where we have made our first home together. We live in the Bowery, right in the mecca of three hip and trendy neighborhoods (SoHo, Lower East Side, and the East village) and we really wanted pictures to reflect our real lives in our actual hang out spots. I had the idea of an ‘Uptown & Downtown’ engagement shoot theme and spent a lot of time scoping out street art locales around our neighborhood (and not to mention deciding on just the right amount of leather!).

While I love the timelessness of our shots in Central Park, I’m a bit obsessed with how our downtown pictures came out. Our photographer, Theo Milo, did an amazing job working with all of the locations we gave him. It’s hard to believe that all of the downtown photos are within a three block radius of our house – Theo even got our normal coffee spot to look magical. And we lucked out with the bold graffiti wall right across from our apartment, it changes all the time and this had to be the best one I’ve seen yet. Some of my favorites are with our adorable puppy, Bowery, she steals the show! Being a southerner it took me a while to embrace the city, but now I feel so lucky we get to spend this fun time in our lives in the greatest city in the world.

New York City Wedding at the New York Academy of Medicine

New York City weddings always tend to sparkle, but this one shines in a way that will surely leave you speechless. Captured by Justine Bursoni and planned by La Vie En Rose, this wedding is not only stylish but it’s also soulful – making it a serious winner in our eyes. See it all here.

From Justine BursoniOn, Saturday, May 18, 2013 — Carol and Terence had two wedding ceremonies in honor of both of their shared Chinese and American heritages. The first was held in Central Park’s English Garden at the Conservatory Garden and the second tea ceremony and full wedding reception was held inside of The New York Academy of Medicine.

Die hard New Yorkers and oh so proud of the city in which they live, Carol and Terence decided to have their first look inside of Grand Central Station, directly in front of the ticket window, followed by an enthusiastic round of applause from all of the strangers that collected around them to watch. They then traveled with their entire bridal party to their first ceremony in Central Park via the subway.

Carol and Terence hired their favorite band, Olivia Mancini and The Housemates to perform at their wedding + the couple and their friends danced the entire night away to amazing covers of classic Beatles and more.

From Karen Hill Photography… I love a winter wedding and The Bowery Hotel’s old world charm has the perfect NYC winter wedding setting with it’s warm brick walls and fireplaces. The bride’s Stella McCartney tea length fringe dress and Valentino shoes set this wedding apart!

Melanie and Greg were married at the Bowery Hotel on December 7, 2013. We did the first look, the family photos and then the ceremony. The Bowery Hotel is a dark venue with warm glowing lights. The ceremony was intimate, short and sweet! The couple’s dinner and dancing was enjoyed by their guests and the cake, by Baked, was amazing! It was a perfect day!
