Event Venue

From the Bride… A week after Pablo and I got engaged, we went on an amazing trip around the world, or what we call our “engagementmoon,” visiting eight countries in three weeks. Once we arrived in Paris, it only felt natural for us to check the first thing off our wedding to-do list and buy matching wedding shoes with those iconic red Louboutin heels. Looking back on it now, I realize that matching one element to another in our wedding became a consistent theme of planning. Doing so made wedding planning that much more fun and effortless, much like finding connecting pieces to a puzzle.

Pablo and I both knew we wanted to keep our wedding close to our home, friends, and family in New York City. After some brief web surfing, I came across 501 Union in Brooklyn, and immediately upon viewing pictures, I knew in my heart that this was the perfect place for us. A week later, we signed for the venue at first sight. Having a background in art, in my eyes, the modern feel of the venue, the black and white walls, and the chic art deco wallpapers provided the ultimate canvas to host any type of wedding.

We set our date for late September, and while fall in New York is beautiful, our summers seemingly feel shorter every year. Trying to extend summer a little longer, we decided on a romantic theme with pink and metallic colors, dreamy tulle, and plenty of pink flowers to lighten up and contrast the venue. The weather on our wedding day ended up amazing, so it actually felt like a perfect summer day.

My family owns a bakery called the Runcible Spoon Bakery, and after receiving a degree in art, I decided to take my artistic talents and apply them to the family business. Over the years, while learning to manage the business and to bake, I also taught myself how to decorate cakes. It quickly became obvious that I would make my own wedding cake. Eventually, I also decided to cater all of the desserts for our wedding by creating an entire dessert bar. I must admit, baking hundreds of macarons, cake pops, and hand decorated cookies, on top of making a wedding cake and planning a wedding, was truly a labor of love.

Our entire day was magical – everything went exactly the way we had envisioned and hoped for the year leading up to it. The saddest part of the day was when it was all over. All of the planning, stressing, and, in my case, baking was so worth it in the end. After the day just flew by and our guests were leaving, I remember turning to Pablo and saying, “Aw – let’s do that again.” It was a good thing we planned an after party!

When it came to picking vendors, we were blessed to have found a team with a creative vision that we could place all our trust in to capture our day. Pablo and I still constantly find ourselves looking through our wedding photos or re-watching our video, because even though the day has gone, those pictures and video still live on and remind us of the best day of our lives – the end of our beginning.

Elegant Pale Pink Upstate New York Wedding

Want in on a little secret? The Big Apple may claim most of New York’s glory but head north a few hours and there’s a whole other wonderous world. And these pics by Greg Finck are all the pretty proof you need. This rustic yet elegant affair, planned by Bella & Co., showcases beautiful Skaneateles Lake and these lovebirds that just can’t stop smiling. Fall in love with them – and all of NY – in our Vault here!

MustWatch_swash-01

From Greg Finck… Sydney and Brian both live in New York City but have spent most of their childhood holidays around Skaneateles Lake, in upstate New York. It was natural that they decided to organize their wedding in this wonderful area, where amazing historical mansions are around the Lake. This is the first time I traveled to upstate New York, but I must say I have been totally seduced by the beauty of the landscapes and backdrops.

Sydney and Brian’s elegant day was perfectly organized and designed by Jenna, from Bella & Co. She was the sweetest person to work with, and she kept a huge smile on her face all day despite strong rain that came to change some of the organization during the summer day. Sassafras Flowers did an amazing job for flowers, especially for the bride’s and bridesmaid’s bouquets. As a photographer, shooting such nuances of pastels were just a dream. Maureen Higgins designed an amazing suite of stationery, totally matching the floral design and color palette of the day.

Even though it rained hard, the sweet couple still decided to keep their ceremony outdoor, behind that giant tree, sheltering them and their guests from that moody weather. After braving the mud for couple pictures, we all headed to Angela’s Vineyard to end the day with a wonderful dinner!

10 Pretty Things We Love About: Cedar Lakes Estate

Are you on the hunt for the perfect venue? Well, your search is about to be complete because when it comes to Cedar Lakes Estate, what’s not to love?! It’s the type of venue that is magical all on it’s own. For around ever corner of this enchanted estate lies beauty and thanks to Trent Bailey Studio we’ve got a peek of the pretty that awaits you. See it all below!

What inspired you start a business at Cedar Lakes Estate?

Stephanie and I (Lisa) are sisters. Our entrepreneurial (read: crazy) parents purchased this 600-acre former summer camp before we were born and it was the most fun place in the world to grow up. It was any child’s dream– white Christmases, fresh mountain air and lazy lakeside summer days made up the fabric of our childhood. We fell in love with the peace and tranquility of this special place; so despite where our lives took us, we always found our way back. After I graduated from Culinary School and Stephanie mastered the art of event planning in NYC, we decided to build a business where we could foster our love for food, event planning, and affection for our childhood home. Now as Cedar Lakes’ Co-Founders, we work each day to share our combined passions with our guests.

What’s your personal motto, or a phrase that inspires you creatively?

“If you can dream it, you can do it.” -Walt Disney

Can you describe your aesthetic in three words?

I am totally cheating on this one and sneaking in 6 words:

Authentic + Nostalgic

Natural + Bucolic

Rustic yet Elegant

What are three things you can’t live without?

Family, Pasta, Our dogs

Where do you find inspiration?

Travel has always been a huge part of our lives. We have collectively been to 48 states, 18 countries, and 5 continents. To us, nothing is more inspiring than learning about different cultures first hand.

What’s your favorite social media platform?

We are the Snapchat queens! It’s definitely the most fun form of social media, plus I like how it’s a little less public and a little more real.

What is a wedding venue detail that often gets overlooked, that you wish got more attention?

The freakin ceremony!!! It’s so crazy but it’s almost always the lowest priority for couples. Call me old fashioned, but I think this should be the most thought-out and perfect part of the day. After all, aren’t the “I do’s” the reason we have weddings in the first place?

What do you think is the most important question a client can ask, when deciding what venue to have their wedding at?

We think it’s so important to vibe well with your venue and the people running it. It’s not just about the day itself, it’s also about the process. You will be spending a very special year (or more) working with these people all the time, so you want that experience to be fun and stress-free. Make sure their vision and values align with yours, so that you have a flawless experience from beginning to end.

What’s been your proudest professional accomplishment as a venue owner?

Nothing makes us more proud than a glowing review from a client. Hearing things like “we went above and beyond to exceed their expectations,” gave them and their loved ones “the most memorable experience of their lives” or that they will “cherish the experience forever” – is priceless.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun?

We are truly obsessed with finding the best places to eat in every city we go to, including NYC where we live. We are everyone’s go-to for restaurant suggestions!

Classic NYC Bowery Hotel Wedding

I’ve been dying to take a weekend trip to NYC for the past couple months, and this wedding is officially pushing my urban wanderlust over the edge. Photographed by our dear friends at Christian Oth Studio with florals by Poppies & Posies, think a modern take on old world glamour with a candlelit reception that would make any guest feel thoroughly spoiled. Hopple Popple planned, Generation Events made certain the entertainment was on point, and you can keep the party going with a trip to The Vault.

From The Bride…Mike and I met 6 years ago in New York, between Christmas and New Years. The City has always been very special to both of us and it seemed natural to have our wedding there, despite currently living in Boston.

The hardest part of the planning process was honestly just figuring out where to start. Since we were making most people travel we knew we wanted to put together a full weekend schedule and I had some general ideas about look and feel: an informal ceremony performed by a close friend, a simple and elegant room design, and lots of time with family and friends. Most importantly, we wanted the entire weekend to feel like a big celebration so it had to be fun!

Fortunately, our first decision ended up being our best: choosing to work with Linda, Aya and Julie and the Hopple Popple team here in Boston to plan the event. They were terrific to work with and introduced us to a fantastic group of vendors who really brought the whole weekend together: Robin Popelsky at The Bowery (and later The Standard), Poppies and Posies for flowers and design, Jason Fioto at Generation Events for music/DJ, and Glen Allsop at Christian Oth for photography. We connected right away with Glen and I think it really shows in the photos. He was incredible!

From Little Miss Party PlannerDays before the weather turned too cool for bare legs, this beautiful couple held a low key, romantic wedding in the East Village of NYC.

This laid back pair wanted a rustic and romantic feel, with chic touches for their wedding. They decided to host the reception in the gorgeous private event loft at Il Buco Alimentari in New York City’s East Village. The loft space is ultra cozy, with exposed brick walls, rustic farm tables and dim lighting. We styled gold vintage candlesticks down the center of the farm tables where the guests dined on Northern Italian delicacies. We used fresh flowers in tones of fuchsia, peach and light pink adding subtle pops of color all through the space.

Each place setting had a personalized placemat with the main stars: Wifey & Hubby. We sourced pink champagne flutes for every setting and customized menus with a gold foil print.

We hit the cake up with some of the fresh flowers and fell in love. The metallic gold brush strokes, bright pops of pink and peach. The room was now complete and full of love.

After our bride and groom, Dara and Michael, spent time strolling around the East Village on the beautiful cobblestone streets they met their family at the venue for the big reveal. Eyes welled up with joy, kisses were flowing and the night went off without a hitch. Parties like this, make us extra thankful for the business that we run. It’s pure joy to bring such happiness to people as sweet as Dara and Michael.

From The Bride…I dreamt of having a romantic, intimate wedding, and that was exactly how the day played out. Hair and Makeup at the Bowery, Photos with my family at Gemma (where Michael and I had our first date!), A stroll with my love through the east village…and the perfect party at Il Buco. Couldn’t have asked for a better way to get married.

Fashion Editor’s Fabulous Same-Sex Brooklyn Wedding with a Custom Christian Siriano Gown

Four words: Custom Christian Siriano gown. I mean, based on that fact alone we’d say Nicolette Mason of Marie Claire had the most amazing wedding ever. The best part? The beauty doesn’t end there. We’re talking about the chicest celebration Brooklyn has ever seen. From the sweet pup, to Laura Hooper Calligraphy accents, to skyline kisses, Clean Plate Pictures captured it all for us to pin. See it all in The Vault!

From Clean Plate PicturesWhen Nicolette approached me to photograph her wedding at the Wythe Hotel I was over the moon. I met Nicolette years ago and from following her fashion blog I knew she has an amazing sense of style and that her and Ali’s special day was not only going to be filled with love and laughter, but also immaculately detailed. And they did not disappoint! From the adorable ring boxes stamped with the couple’s initials and customized temporary tattoos, to the personalized wood carved place settings, there were so many fun details to capture! Even their sweet little pug, Frankie, was dressed up for the occasion. The touching ceremony was followed by an adorable first dance and raucous hora, after which I was able to get some magical sunset portraits in front of the New York skyline. I especially loved photographing Nicolette twirling in her stunning custom Christian Siriano dress. Then, it was back down stairs for heartfelt speeches, delicious cake and more dancing! It was truly a perfect day for such a beautiful couple. Wishing them so much love and happiness for many many years!

From the Bride, Nicolette MasonWhat Ali and I envisioned was really, really close to what we ended up sharing with our friends and family. We wanted an intimate ceremony and reception with lots of bespoke details that made everything from start to finish extra special and beautiful. We prioritized FUN over everything, and spent a lot of time with our DJ, Amber Valentine, and our band, Postmodern Jukebox, on creating an atmosphere that had everyone dancing from start to finish. While we also looked at a lot of venues, we kept coming back to the Wythe Hotel. It’s been a place that we’ve visited countless times together, and even celebrated our engagement with friends at their rooftop bar, The Ides, on the day we got engaged. The space is so beautiful and reflected our home in Brooklyn, with an industrial-chic vibe, exposed brick, and flashes of brass and gold. We loved the high ceilings of their ballroom, and the open feel of their courtyard. We worked with a lighting designer to bring in additional string lights to make the entire room sparkle. We also used one of their penthouse lofts, on the 8th floor, for getting ready, taking portraits, and signing our Ketubah (Jewish marriage license). The room is beautiful, and I loved that we could look onto the New York City skyline while prepping for our wedding. The entire thing felt so true to us and like it was such a reflection of our relationship and the marriage we wanted to create together!

We knew from the day that we got engaged that we wanted to have a spring wedding, and that had a huge role in influencing the color palette and overall aesthetic – especially since most of our favorite flowers are only in season during the spring and summer! We went with a theme of blush pink, sage green, champagne and gold – and that was infused in all the details, from the stemware to our paper suit designed by Ladyfingers Letterpress to what we wore. Ali’s suit was custom made by Bindle & Keep and had a pink lining, and she wore a pink Ferragamo tie that my dad gave her as a gift. I wore a blush pink custom gown designed by Christian Siriano, which had rose gold appliqué and crystals throughout, and a custom clutch given to me by Edie Parker, which was inscribed with “N&A” in champagne and gold lucite. Virtually every detail came back to our original color palette and inspiration – even the tassel background we DIYed for our photobooth.

Virtually everything felt customized and special – and I loved that! I have a design background and work as an editor in fashion now, so it was really a labor of love to spearhead those elements of the wedding (while Ali handled more of the logistical, organizational details – she’s the queen of spreadsheets).

We were really, really excited to work on our favors – they were all personalized and felt really special. I’m sort of obsessed with place settings, and I wanted to create something really bespoke for everyone. I found Laura Hooper Calligraphy and she makes these beautiful laser cut wood nameplates; each place setting had its own nameplate which was painted gold, and it was a nice detail which everyone could take home. Then we also worked with Hartland Brooklyn, a local letterpress and design studio, to create a sheet of tattoos that were special to us; after all, we’re two Brooklyn queers with a handful of ink of our own, and it felt like a fun thing to do – so they designed a temporary tattoo pack with illustrations of our pug Frankie, tuxedo cat Lily, and pretty florals that were in our arrangements. They were so cute and by the end of the night there were a lot of pug and peony neck tattoos on our friends. Finally, we also made custom rose soy-based candles and matchboxes for everyone to take home; our florals had an amazing fragrance that filled the space, and I loved the thought of people being able to take that scent with them – especially for family who traveled far to join us at our wedding! It was definitely one of my favorite details to conceptualize!

But really – we thought about nearly every detail. We had Laura Hooper Calligraphy create a custom cake topper, as well, and we had cocktail napkins made. We even made a small welcome bag for our family that came in from out of town, again with a tote designed by Laura Hooper Calligraphy, and filled it with little New York items – a Zagat guide (an essential for visitors, obviously), Grady’s Cold Brew Coffee, Mast Brothers Chocolate… It was so fun to think of things like that.

Being a same-sex couple, I think the most special feeling was having so much love, support, and happiness around us – and that is not something I take for granted. The love in the room was palpable, without compromise, and heartwarming. It was really incredible to feel that from all our friends and family – grandparents included!

We worked with our favorite floral studio in our neighborhood, Sprout Home , to create our dream florals. They did the most amazing job – and Kalena, one of their designers, has got to be one of the sweetest and most patient people I’ve ever met. We wanted to feature peonies, garden roses, and succulents (an ode to my mother’s garden in California), and have really full, gorgeous arrangements fill the space. We had three arrangements on each rectangular table – one large, taller arrangement and two smaller arrangements. They were so beautiful and I wished we could have made them last an eternity. Sprout Home also designed the florals to cover our Chuppah – which then made their way onto mine and Ali’s sweetheart table. I absolutely loved my bouquet, too! We wrapped it in this beautiful blush pink, velvet ribbon which looked so gorgeous. Can you tell the flowers were one of my favorite parts?

Christian Siriano is one of my closest friends, so there was no question that once Ali and I were engaged, he would be the one working on my wedding dress. I came into his studio with lots of inspiration and a general idea of what I wanted to do look like for our wedding, but I mostly entrusted Christian to put his talents to work and create something beautiful. It was definitely a privilege to work with a designer who already knows my sense of style and my personality – and he absolutely created my dream gown! The gown was layered in hand dyed blush pink tulle, and covered in rose gold roses and crystal appliqué. I had full, sheer sleeves so it looked like the crystals and roses were sitting right on my skin – it was so much fun to wear that I refused to take it off – even at our after party when we went bowling across the street at Brooklyn Bowl.

Our cake was made by The Wythe in-house pastry chef, and it was an earl-grey saffron cake with vanilla buttercream. I have celiac’s disease, so unfortunately I couldn’t eat it, but I’m told that it was the best wedding cake ever. My family is Persian and English, so I loved the idea of mixing flavors from both cultures into the cake. We also had an assortment of fruit, flourless cake, petit fours – but the cake was so beautiful, and we covered it with flowers from Sprout (a cascading mix of garden roses and peonies), and topped it with a laser-cut wood topper created by Laura Hooper Calligraphy. I’m pretty sure I’m going to request a special gluten-free version of the cake to celebrate our anniversary!! Overall, The Wythe in-house catering was incredible. We’ve been to and loved many of their sister restaurants, and definitely prioritized good food when finally selecting our venue (I mean, let’s be honest- wedding food is mostly mediocre at best), and I can confidently say the food at our wedding was incredible. We worked with their chefs to create special dishes that paid tribute to our heritage and cultured – a spring salad with smoked trout for Ali’s Russian, Jewish heritage, and lots of saffron, dill, and harissa to celebrate my middle eastern background.

This may seem really controversial, but…. LAY OFF PINTEREST! I know, I know – Pinterest can be an amazing resource for finding inspiration, DIY ideas, and creating a mood board to share with your vendors, but overall it just made me feel like there were all these extra, superfluous things that I needed to have or do that…. we really didn’t need at all. We tried to stay focused on things we actually really did need and want – great music, great food, and fun details to keep everyone entertained (our Photo Booth was a big winner), and create an event where everyone was happy and celebrating — and I really think we pulled it off!

It was really important to us to work with vendors who were either women or LGBT owned. The wedding industry is enormous but we wanted to work specifically with talent from our own community, who shared our values.

Our photographer, Erica Beckman of Clean Plate Pictures, was a friend-of-friends for many years who we have shared community with. She made us feel so comfortable and at ease, and really stayed on top of everything throughout the day of our wedding to make sure all our special moments were captured – and the photos themselves are stunning and so magical. Photography was definitely something we prioritized in our budget and I think it’s a really, really worthy expense. It’s true that the day goes by so quickly, and being able to trust a photographer to capture everything as its happening (much of which you won’t even realize happened until you’re looking at your photos later) is so special and priceless.

We also worked with a queer-owned letter press studio, Ladyfingers Letterpress, to create all of the papers for our wedding and day-of materials. They were a couple who shared so many of our pre-wedding experiences and anxieties, and actually formed their business after dealing with frustrations in planning their own wedding! I loved, LOVED working with them and they are SO talented.

Our DJ, Amber Valentine, is a longtime friend who also throws some of the best queer parties in NYC. She was able to customize the music and remix things to suit our party needs, she even incorporated some Persian music that my family requested!

Our day of planner, Jove Meyer Events, was also gay and helped us find a LGBT Rabbi to officiate, too! It may seem like a little thing, but after meeting with and speaking to tons of vendors who made us feel uncomfortable, who didn’t speak our language (“so which one of you is the bride?” Um, we both are!), we wanted to work with people who would go out of their way to make the entire wedding process feel like it was inclusive and about us, and that was invaluable. Plus, being able to support women and LGBT owned businesses added a bit of social consciousness to our wedding planning process!

Eclectic + Vintage-Inspired Industrial Wedding at The Pocketbook Factory

This Bride and Groom are the very definition of “cool.” For starters, they’re the duo behind The Local Branch, a traveling boutique selling American-made apparel, leather goods, accessories, and more. Then, there’s this wedding full of eclectic, vintage-inspired touches including a gorgeous wedding dress made by the Bride’s mother, floral arrangements by the Bride and her ‘maids, and personalized favors for each guest. See every special moment photographed by Elena Wolfe and assisted by Robyn Blasi in The Vault!

From The Bride…Blaine and I met when we were just kids and started dating when we were seniors in high school. We had a few years apart for college and then after school we headed out west to California where we lived in San Francisco for about 5 years. We started a small clothing line together and we renovated a vintage Airstream trailer to be a mobile workshop, which allows us the ability to travel full-time with our business. We got engaged on the road while on the Appalachian Trail in October – and then had a late summer wedding in the Hudson Valley, NY – a place near and dear to our hearts.

We initially wanted an outdoor wedding, but all of the logistics became too overwhelming – and when we discovered The Pocketbook Factory in Hudson, NY we knew this was the ideal mix of everything we were hoping for. The large industrial windows flooded the space with natural light, and the quirky vintage furniture provided a touch of charm that we both love. The venue also allowed us the whole week to slowly transform the space, so with the help of a few close family members, we turned this blank canvas into the wedding of our imaginations!

We are both innately creative people, so we had a lot of fun dreaming, planning and executing all of the many details. We definitely had a vision and wanted our wedding to be a mix of vintage and eclectic, sentimental and authentic with a lot of charm. We loved the juxtaposition of hosting a fancy event inside of an old industrial sewing factory. We knew with a dreamy color palette, the glimmer of hundreds of candles, the big white summer flowers, an amazing family style meal, a wide assortment of whiskey and old fashioned gypsy jazz band, the mood would be set and the party would be one for the books!

We chose whites, ivories, soft pinks, golds, coppers and brass for our colors, which felt really romantic against the men’s black suits and the factory’s dark wooden floors and brick walls.

I really wanted to do the flowers myself, so when our caterer told us about the flower party option at Flower Blossom Farm, I was beyond excited. Since we travel full-time, we were able to collect dozens of vintage brass candlesticks and antique copper vessels from all over the country, which we used to adorn the tables. My mom, sister and best friends/bridesmaids went with me to the farm a few days before the wedding, where we made all of the table arrangements and bouquets. The farm hosted us with fancy quiches, coffee and pastries and taught us the tricks of the trade. The flower party was a lovely kickoff and one of my fondest memories of the weekend.

We were trying to think of something sweet and personal for our favors. We stumbled into a cute little shop in Brooklyn where we discovered little books packed full with quotes and sayings. During our road trips we’d read through the phrases, selecting the best fit for each and every guest. We tied the little quote pages around napkins with baker’s twine and a rosemary sprig at each person’s seat. The favors were really special and everyone could tell that it chosen specifically for them.

Throughout our wedding it was all of the little details which were really important to us – not necessarily that they be grand or elaborate, but more that they were sentimental and authentic with meaning behind each choice, and that was especially true with my dress.

I tried on lots and lots of dresses with my mom and sister, and although there were so many beauties out there, I just knew that it would mean a thousand times more to me if I could make make my own gown with my mom. She made her own wedding dress, and after a little bit of coaxing she finally agreed. We visited a quaint fabric store in Manhattan’s fashion district and within seconds the most beautiful lace fabric caught my eye. Just like that, my mind was made and my mom and I were toasting with the store owner to my soon-to-be wedding gown! We worked on it together a little bit at a time over the length of my engagement. When it was finally complete, she added my “something blue” to the dress – a little blue tag reading “Mom”. Making my gown with my mom was such a beautiful memory for me.

Our cake was a Tuscan Lemon Wedding Cake, which was the most delicious wedding cake I have ever eaten! It was a rich olive oil and citrus cake with a lemon buttercream frosting. The same bakery also made a few varieties of French Macarons and three different types of pies (with really gorgeous latticed tops). My mom made her famous Chocolate Bon Bons and a good family friend made darling tea cookies with jam. We also had a few assorted flavors of gelato and a french press coffee bar!

There was a moment when everyone was sitting and eating the amazing family style meal – chatting and laughing and toasting their cocktails, and then the sun began to set and warm sunlight made the entire room glow. Blaine and I noticed the lighting and this tender moment at the same time, so we just stopped and held hands and soaked it all in.

A lady told me this – “I hope your day is lovely and I hope that it goes by in slow motion”. I took that with me throughout the day, because the day flies by, and you can so easily get caught up, so just try to stay in the moment and take time to pause and breath and reflect and have fun.

Marriage Matters: Central Park Anniversary

Can I just say – after 12 years of marriage, 3 kids and life’s ups and downs thrown their way, these two still got it. I’m talking about that madly-in-love glow you only get when you’re with the one who makes your heart full. They planned an anniversary session in New York City with one beautiful Nha Khanh tulle gown to celebrate the love, and Julie Paisley came along to capture. Read their amazing love story and go peek through every image inside THE VAULT!

It’s probably not common to actually end up with the boy whose name you wrote on your high school notebooks, but I did. Michael and I dated through high school and college, and six years later we got married. Michael proposed to me in November in the middle of an empty field with candles and flowers, but, the best detail of all was a propane heater. That’s one of many things I love about this man, his biggest concern was always taking care of me, but now after twelve years of marriage and eighteen years together, it’s taking care of me and our three children.

Michael was in an accident a few years ago, and after a stint in ICU and a couple of surgeries, perspectives changed for both of us. We both realized that this person that we had by our side for so long could someday not be there. We started to travel more, and do more of the things that we didn’t make time to do.

We traveled to NYC so that we could have a vacation to date each other. We had not planned on this shoot with Julie Paisley. In fact, part of the trip was for me to attend her photography workshop because I’m a photographer. At the time it seemed like a strange turn of events, that we became the subjects of her photography, but now I know it was because there was something so much better waiting for us. As soon as we found out that Julie would be photographing us, I enlisted stylist Krissi Farrimond to style us, and she arranged for Kiara Hargrove to do my hair and make-up.

So, here we were in New York City, one of my favorite places, and I am literally about to live out a fairy tale after twelve years of marriage with this gorgeous man. A few kinks came in the timeline, and we were in a mad dash to get to Central Park for the shoot. We sprinted through Central Park, dressed as if we just fell right out of a Disney princess movie where the prince wears J.Crew and the fairy godmother is a talented stylist. I tiptoed through falling leaves in Central Park while my husband, dressed ever so handsomely, held my hand. We had just experienced one of my favorite memories of us together.

Our wedding, the three amazing births of our children, there are so many special memories, and that night we created a new memory for just the two of us that we could share with our children. After the shoot we went to dinner at one of our favorite NYC restaurants. I will never forget the feeling of that night. Even after we got home from New York City, I still couldn’t believe it happened!

There’s just no way to write a love story that you’ve lived because words could never adequately describe the heart break of him being hurt and the joy of him being okay. I could just never even tell you what is invested in the years we have together. If I started from the beginning, eighteen years ago when we started dating, I couldn’t bring your heart to feel what we do now. I can’t paint that picture with words, but man I feel like Julie captured it with film.

And now our children and grandchildren can have these images to remember our love story! My advice to brides and grooms, is don’t overlook this. After the wedding is long over, still get dressed up with your spouse, hire a fantastic photographer, document this time in your life, and go to dinner. Date each other, because daily life isn’t a fairy tale, it’s kids and work and everything else begging for your attention. You have to make time to have a fairy tale. You have to put effort into a fairy tale. I dreamed about marrying him back when I was writing his name on my notebooks, but there was something so much better waiting for me. It’s so worth the effort!

Classic Blush + Gold Wedding at The Hempstead House

Technically speaking, photography is all about capturing light and CLY By Chung captured the light (and moments!) of this Connecticut wedding beautifully. The photos of this gorgeous Bride and her handsome Groom in the picturesque gardens are completely stunning just like the rest of this traditional wedding—especially the flowers by Design By Ahn. See all the pretty for yourself in THE VAULT!

From The Bride…David and I met in the summer of 2013 in Manhattan at his best friend’s birthday BBQ. We started dating several months later, and on July 25, 2014 David popped the question! We celebrated our engagement over a weekend with friends and family in the Hamptons and the whirlwind of wedding planning pretty much started soon after!

We had a Christian ceremony at The Hempstead House in Sands Point, NY on May 30, 2015, a beautiful mansion built in early 1900s. My vision for the wedding was ethereal and romantic, with a creamy color palette of ivory, light blush pinks and peaches. We wanted to highlight the venue’s beautiful architecture, so our main decor was focused around my favorite spring flowers, peonies and garden roses, and plenty of candles lit throughout the venue!

The day was perfect and exactly as we’d envisioned and planned. We were so blessed to celebrate with 150 of our closest friends and family and will remember the day forever!

Spontaneous NYC City Hall Elopement

Completely over the stress of planning their wedding and meeting the demands of everyone around them, these cuties threw it all to the wind and ran off to City Hall. And are we glad they did – because these pics by Cynthia Chung are too sweet for words. Their genuine love for one another is evident in every single photo and isn’t that what weddings are all about? See them all in our VAULT right this way!

From the Bride… We planned our $2k elopement in 10 days and it was truly the most fun I ever had during our wedding planning. Although we’d been engaged for a year and a half and there was only two months left till our big day, we were constantly dealing with family drama and our wedding no longer felt like ours. When you’re crying almost every night because of your wedding and absolutely dreading it, you know something has to change.

We have been people pleasers our entire lives. I finally broke down one day and decided I couldn’t allow myself to have a wedding neither of us absolutely did not want. So we took the plunge and decided to get married at City Hall on our anniversary on a Wednesday morning.

I told my photographer all the anxiety I felt about my wedding and how Chris and I finally decided we were going to elope. She was incredibly supportive and helped make our day extra special by capturing it all. I bought a Badgley Mischka dress from Century 21 the weekend before and asked my florist to make me a simple bouquet of white anemones, which she kindly delivered to work for me. I put my faith into a wonderful makeup artist I discovered on Instagram and without a trial, asked her to come to my apartment at 7 am to help me get ready. I felt like Cinderella getting ready for the ball with all my amazing vendor helpers.

Right before we entered the chapel room, my mom whispered to me that I was the most beautiful bride and my eyes started watering. When Chris began to say his vows, I immediately began to cry.

After our ceremony, we blew bubbles outside the steps of City Hall and took pictures at the Ludlow Hotel, where we were staying for the night. We had lunch at the Dirty French, where the amazing staff kept bringing out complimentary dishes in honor of us being newlyweds. We spent the rest of the afternoon at the Bowery Museum and had a private dinner at the Stanton Social. The next morning, we had breakfast together at the hotel and went straight to work.

It’s unbelievable how fast the day passed for us, and that I get to call Chris my husband now. The sight of his wedding ring on his hand always makes me smile, and I am so excited for our future together. Although we are still having the big 150 person wedding and honeymoon in Mexico in December that our family wants us to have, we have absolutely no regrets for having the small and intimate wedding we always wanted. I encourage any couple who’s in the midst of wedding planning to really take a step back and see if the vision you have for your day is really yours, and to honor what both of you want.

From the Bride… Jason and I serendipitously met at a grocery store while we were both in high school (in neighboring towns) and kept finding our way back to each other through college, long-distance moves and simply growing up. When Jason and I got engaged (on the Pont des Arts in Paris a few years ago), the last thing that entered my mind was planning a wedding. Instead, I couldn’t stop thinking about how lucky I was to have found my match and that we chose each other forever. While my energy quickly turned to thinking about the wedding we’d have to celebrate our marriage, that initial thought never left my mind and still hasn’t to this day.

At the time that we got engaged, we were living in San Francisco and about to make a move back to the east coast, where we both grew up, to New York. Once we arrived back in New York, the planning was in full effect. We quickly chose The Foundry in Long Island City as our venue; it felt so much like us and the way we wanted our wedding to be – beautiful but not fussy, interesting but not complicated, full of possibilities but not overwhelming. Once the venue was secured, it was pretty remarkable how easily the rest fell into place.

We wanted the mood of our wedding to be romantic but maintain a beautiful simplicity to it. Every vendor we found contributed to this mood and beautifully executed our vision – from our band, who flawlessly played music that was personal and meaningful to us (I walked down the aisle to Sigur Ros and we had our first dance to Ben Folds) to our caterer who crafted some of our favorite foods like mini lobster rolls and grilled cheese in a beautiful but approachable way, to our florist who made the most gorgeously lush arrangements reminiscent of a romantic garden.

More important than our vision for what the wedding would look like, though, was our vision for what the wedding would feel like. It was paramount to us that our wedding was intimate, personal and family-oriented, so Jason’s dad officiated the ceremony (one of the best wedding decisions we made), we placed old family photos on book shelves for guests to look at, we had long rows of tables at dinner so our guests could feel like they were at a family dinner, and we incorporated family traditions and heirlooms into the ceremony like the ketubah and chuppah covering. I even created all of the candle favors as a personal way to thank our guests for being a part of our wedding day.

Throughout the entire planning process, we focused on one goal: to throw a memorable party for the people in our lives who meant the most to us – the family and friends who felt like family – that fill our lives with love, support and happiness. Looking back on our wedding day, I think we did just that.

Sweet Rustic Engagement Session at Bluefield Farm

Well isn’t this just the cutest duo ever? These New Yorkers escaped the city and headed to a family farm where they played with chickens and goats, all while wearing some perfectly on par ensembles (thanks to the styling talents of AOK Styling). Ashley Caroline captured it all and our VAULT is now full of this engagement sweetness to inspire us all – more this way!

From the Bride-to-be… For our engagement photos we knew we wanted to go somewhere outside of the city with lots of greenery while also picking somewhere meaningful to us. We picked my aunt and uncle’s farm, Bluefield Farm, a very special place to me where we have spent countless Thanksgivings with the whole family. The farm is located just a short drive outside of NYC and the beautiful flowers and stone walls surrounding the property were the perfect backdrop for our photos.

We wanted to keep our outfits casual and simple, like us. We decided on two different looks with help from Allie who picked out our outfits and brought our vision to life. Our first look was a bit more bohemian and dressed up. My dress was from Anthropologie and Logan wore a button down from J.Crew. Our second look was more casual with me in overalls and a crop top with No. 6 clogs while Logan wore jeans and a tee.

Hong Kong Couple’s New York City Pre-Wedding Photo Shoot

This gorgeous pre-wedding photo shoot could not have came across my desk at a more serendipitous time. At a time where I’m too cowardly to leave my cozy apartment in Jonas’ snowy aftermath, Cynthia Chung Weddings‘ photos are transporting me to the sunny cobblestone streets of the West Village and onto the scenic High Line, and reminding me why I love this city. Fall in love for yourself in THE VAULT!

Colors

From Cynthia Chung WeddingsIt was a pleasure photographing Karen and John around in such an awesome area of NYC in their wedding outfits. In Asia, doing “pre-wedding” photo sessions are very common. It’s when the bride and groom wear their wedding attire to do amazing portraits before the wedding day so they could showcase the photos at the wedding! Karen’s dress was amazing and having their classic and elegant black tie look amidst such an industrial and raw part of New York City was really unique and made for some amazing photographs. It also helped that we peaked in the High Line and some parts of the West Village.

From The Bride…New York was an obvious choice for us to take pre-wedding photos – Jon is a native New Yorker and I really enjoyed visiting Jon there from Hong Kong during our two year long distance relationship (thankfully we are together in one place now). The challenging part for us was where exactly in NYC to do the shoot. Jon and I have pretty similar taste – when we thought about what we like, cobble stone streets, brown stone townhouses and tree lined streets came to mind. One of our favorite neighborhoods in the city is the West Village and the High Line also has meaning for us since it’s one of the first places we visited together in Manhattan.

The pre-wedding photo shoot couldn’t have gone any better. It was very natural for us to work with Cynthia; her laid back style, knack for finding unique locations / angles to snap our pictures and positive attitude made the session really fun for us. We are extremely happy with the results and have been actively sharing her photos with our family and friends (with lots of compliments!).

For all of you out there contemplating whether to do your shoot in NYC, we would highly recommend it because believe it or not New Yorkers are very friendly – we received so many congratulations and compliments (probably because I was wearing a full on wedding gown which apparently is more of a Hong Kong thing than something common for the U.S.).

All-in-all NYC was an easy choice for us and we were extremely happy with the West Village / High Line and how our photos came out!

Romantic Garden-Inspired Blue Hill at Stone Barns Wedding

I dare you not to fall in love with each and every detail of this upstate New York wedding. And how could you not with vendors like Daughter Of DesignBella FiguraJenny YooOnce Upon A BrideStacie Ford Weddings and Jarrell Entertainment. Head to THE VAULT to see all the pretty details (that Monique Lhuillier gown for one) captured by Christian Oth Studio, and don’t say we didn’t warn you!

From The Bride…We got engaged at sunset on a beautiful evening in Bagan, Myanmar, the ancient temple city. The engagement was a destination, and as we were initially discussing potential wedding locations, so at first I thought the wedding would be as well. What we soon realized, though, was that the logistics of a destination wedding would be challenging for too many of our nearest and dearest. So we decided to search for something that felt like the European countryside, but happened to be on the northeast corridor line. We were fortunate enough to get the last summer date available at Blue Hill at Stone Barns. Even when we went to visit the venue on a wet, chilly day in the dead of winter, we fell in love with the location. My mother grew up on a chicken farm, so having the wedding take place on a working farm had special meaning to us. Our goal: to have a fun, casual yet elegant wedding with great food, great music, and great people, and we thought this venue would be the prefect perfect setting.

The day before the wedding, we went with our close family and wedding party for a tour of Blue Hill farm. We learned about the sustainable practices of the farm which gave us and our guests a special opportunity to really get to know the farm, the mission, and have further appreciation for the food we would be eating the day after. One part was especially meaningful: Justin helped arrange a gift that would go towards a 2016 Oak Tree planting in the memory of my father, and part of the tour included seeing where the tree would soon be planted. It was quite meaningful that Blue Hill was able to let us honor him and have him be part of our special event.

Rather than use our names or initials, we had the talented team at Bella Figura design a “goose/swan” logo for the wedding (representing our avian nicknames for each other). We used this logo on the invitation and throughout the wedding, on everything from the yarmulkes to the napkins. I’ve always loved to draw, so thought it would be fun to design the escort cards. Justin and I brainstormed and decided that rather than use table numbers, everyone would be assigned an herb, and a spring of that particular herb would be found at each table setting. We also wanted the flexibility of adjusting last- minute table assignments, so we included drawings of all the herbs on each escort card, and the Daughter of Design team waited until the day prior to circle the appropriate herb for each guest.

My dress was a Monique Lhuillier, and I thought it fit me and the venue to a tee. It was a combination of vintage classic with some modern touches.

As a pre-wedding gift for Justin, I got him a pair of cufflinks from Etsy – one with a goose and one with a swan –, made of vintage stamps. He got me an eternity band that I’d been was eyeing (but wasn’t expecting to receive for some time). I chose a gray Jenny Yoo gown for the bridesmaids – the color was flattering on all of the ladies, and each one was styled to flatter her figure. I also got each bridesmaid matching Eberjey PJ sets. I was inspired by another Blue Hill bride who had suggested them. It was fun to wear the matching sets for the sleepover the night before the wedding, and also proved an easy way to stay comfy through all the morning-of wedding prep.

For the aesthetic design, we worked with the talented Matthew Robbins. We chose a palette of lots of greens with peach, white, and pops of bright pink. We also wanted to play off the stone barns so we used hurricane lanterns. We wanted a “market table” feel for the escort card table, and leading up to the main hall were rows of live rosemary and lavender, which smelled rich and delicious, creating a subtle experience as guests walked through. Matthew also incorporated each table’s particular herb into the table’s décor.

We were very fortunate with the weather and were able to have the ceremony outdoors under a large tree in the Blue Hill courtyard. Matthew and his team designed a beautiful leafy huppah with beautiful pops of flowers. The birds were chirping as we were under the huppah – it felt magical. The cocktail reception took place in the nearby apple menagerie were guests drank signature cocktails and nibbled on delicious passed hors d’oeuvres. To our knowledge, the snacks were so good that nobody felt tempted to pluck a ripe apple off the trees surrounding us.

Music was a very important component of the wedding for the two of us. We had a talented flutist/violin duet from Julliard for our ceremony and reception. Our band, Sound House, was incredible and had all the guests on the dance floor. Justin grew up playing music with his “family band” and we thought it would be fun to incorporate that into the wedding. As the family band started playing some classic rock, Justin interrupted the song to announce that they “needed more cow bell.” Fortunately, I had one hidden under my seat! I got up from my seat (cowbell in hand) and joined the family band for a few classic rock songs, and it its own right was my full initiation into the family.

Food and drink were also important to us. We only finalized our menu two weeks prior to the event, because it is so seasonal and dependent on what would be fresh from the farm. We had a four- course tasting menu with wine pairings for our guests and there were no leftovers in sight! It was delicious – quite a few of our guests told us it was one of the best meals they have ever had.

After we cut the cake (a delicious seasonal cake with blueberry, peach and vanilla), guests kept the party going downstairs with DJ Stephen. Guests nibbled on more small bites and partied on the dance floor. At that time I changed from my wedding gown to a white sequined J Crew Wedding Romper.

As a farewell treat, guests received jars of Blue Hill’s very own honey, thanking them for being part of the “sweetest day of our lives.” We hosted brunch the next morning at the historic Tarrytown House and Estate. It was a lovely sendoff to a perfect weekend.

Colorful Shelter Island Summer Wedding

When the Bride’s from Australia , the Groom’s from Long Island, and friends and family are from around the world, where do you say “I do”!? That was the question for these two, and they settled on Shelter Island, complete with beautiful views and the summer sun. But even that beauty didn’t compare to their celebration, with the blushing Bride, and her ladies’ Jenny Yoo dresses blowing in the breeze. Ryon:Lockhart Photography captured it all, making our VAULT shine just as bright as that day.

From the Bride… When Chris proposed our first question was, “Where in the world should we get married?” He is from Long Island, and I had lived in England, New Zealand, Long Island and Australia at that point. We were both in the process of moving to Boston, after a year of a distance relationship between New York and Australia. We eventually decided that Long Island was the best place for us, because that is where we met and fell in love, where most of our mutual friends were, and it was a middle point between Europe and Oceania for my friends and family to travel to. We wanted to find a venue where our families and the wedding party would be able to stay together for a few days. I had always hoped to be married by the water, so the Ram’s Head Inn was perfect. When picking our photographers, we looked for someone who would be fun to have around on the day, and who would be able to take consistently amazing photographs in the changing light throughout the day and night. Sarah and Tim are two of the most wonderful people we have ever met, and their photographs captured the beauty and happiness that defined our wedding day.

The largest challenge of the wedding planning process was planning the wedding in New York from Boston. My mother was in Australia and my bridesmaids were scattered all over the world, so we had to utilize the internet in every way possible for planning. My mother Skyped in every time I went dress shopping, even if it was the middle of the night for her!

My vision was to keep the wedding design simple and elegant, and to enhance the natural beauty of the grounds at the Ram’s Head Inn. I love bright colors, but felt that keeping the bridesmaids’ dresses in a neutral palette and allowing the colors to be in the floral designs was the look that most suited my vision. This was also inspired by my grandparents’ house in the south of France – so many old stone buildings there are covered in beautiful flowers.

I found my dream dress, Penelope by Watters, which ticked off every one of my wishes – simple, low back, fun tulle skirt, and Jenny Yoo’s Annabelle dress in Cashmere was the perfect bridesmaids match. The versatility of the top half of these dresses allowed each bridesmaid to wear a look that they felt beautiful in. I found a picture online of flower girls wearing a leotard and a tutu, and loved it immediately. Seeing all the girls together in their dresses with their bouquets for the first time was a definite highlight on the day! The men went for a classic charcoal suit, and even though the looks were formal for an outdoor wedding, it came together beautifully.

When I walked down the aisle I could not stop smiling. I am quite an emotional person, and I expected to cry, but I was just so happy. Seeing Chris standing there made me realize how fulfilled I am in our relationship. Also, the scenery was so beautiful, the floral archway was exquisite, and the pianist playing “Can you feel the love tonight” was letting me embrace both my Disney and Elton John fandom! Most importantly, there were family and friends who had literally traveled from all over the country and the world to be there. It was so special, and we both feel such immense love and gratitude towards everyone who traveled from near and far to share this day with us. The ceremony included a speech by my grandfather: he and my grandmother were married sixty years in January. Chris and I had written very simple vows to share: to honor and respect one another, and to treat each other’s dreams as if they were our own. We performed a sand ceremony with sand from New Zealand and Long Island.

The reception was mostly outdoors under fairy lights. The food was local and delicious. We had a few personal touches – Chris had built a swing, and two groomsmen had built a fun photo frame for guests to take pictures in. We had a map where people pin where they had traveled from, and where they thought we should travel to one day. After dinner, we danced the night away. Dancing with people from all different parts of our lives is something I will never forget. The evening ended with toasting s’mores, made from Whittaker’s chocolate (a New Zealand specialty) to commemorate our first date, where Chris had tempted me to come to the beach with him to try this American delight. It was a magical day and is so special to re-live via all of these photographs!

Woodsy + Romantic Wedding at Bedford Post Inn

Carissa and Daniel’s wedding is the perfect blend of the rustic chic and girly glamour. Marrying the magnificence of the outdoors with elegant indoor details, it’s moments like this that’ll steal your wedding loving heart. A day complete with Beat Train tunes and pretty pink gowns, READYLUCK captured every moment to share and we’ve got it all in THE VAULT!

From The Bride…We wanted our wedding to have a “home-y” feeling. Super cozy and romantic. Our color palette was a crisp and clean yet soft feeling. We went with a soft blush for the bridesmaids and a clean, sharp slate for the guys. The flowers were whites and greens, a fresh and clean and crisp feeling. I had this amazing half-flower crown that was so beautiful. The venue, Bedford Post Inn, is the most gorgeous place with every single detail thought out and perfectly decorated. The linens that were used, the furniture in the venue- the whole vibe was EXACTLY what we were looking for. We wanted all of our friends and family to feel right at home, yet still a formal event.

We were stuck on party favors- everyone always has little things that just get thrown away and it’s such a waste of money (in our eyes) so we saw this awesome idea on Pinterest. We bought succulents and terra-cotta pots. We dipped the pots in gold paint (just the bottoms) and stuck a flag with every guests name / table #. This was a great 2-in-1 idea for place cards & favors. I was happy with how they came out!

My favorite moment of the entire day was right before I walked down the aisle, I looked out of the window and saw Daniel, all ready, with the guys heading to the altar. It was such an unreal feeling to see him and feel this connection of stability and happiness. It was perfect.

My absolute favorite element of the wedding was the flowers. THEY WERE TO DIE FOR. Fleurish was fabulous. Understood and executed my vision exactly. Being a creative person, myself, my ideas are always flowing and all over the place. Somehow they figured me out and totally killed it.
