This Hometown Affair is the Definition of Dreamy

It’s not every day you meet the love of your life while waiting out a hurricane, but for cuties Caitlin and Thomas, that’s exactly what happened. It was a movie-like beginning that all lead to a stunning hometown affair that can only be described as classic with a big ol’ side of romance. Think lush florals from Quatre Coeur, pretty paper goods from Wedding Paper Divas and a VAULT of gorgeous moments all captured by the amazing Kelsey Combe. See you there.

From the Bride… TJ and I met at a bar on the Upper East Side of Manhattan during Hurricane Sandy and after two and a half years of dating, he proposed to me on the street corner where we first kissed. Almost immediately after the proposal I began envisioning what I wanted our wedding to be like. As a couple, the thing we value most is the people in our lives and I knew our main priority was to have all of our family and friends there with us, and to throw an awesome, memorable party to celebrate. We also sought to have sentimental touches weaved in throughout the day which captured us as a couple.

I grew up in a small square mile town in Westchester and knew that I wanted our wedding to be in the place where I grew up. Right away we knew we wanted the ceremony to be a Catholic mass and I quickly landed on the perfect place for our ceremony – at the Catholic Church in my hometown. My parents also still live in the home where I grew up and early on I decided that I wanted to get dressed there. I also knew that I wanted my dad to see me for the first time in our front yard that I spent countless hours playing as a child.

In terms of the reception, the one place I could not get out of my head was Shenorock Shore Club, the beach club I grew up going to. The Club has absolutely beautiful views, delicious food, and amazing facilities and staff. More importantly, it meant a lot to me to be able to share a place where some of my fondest memories were made with all our family and friends. So it was a no brainer, and within two weeks of the proposal we booked it.

Once the venue was squared away, photography was my next biggest priority. I wanted photographs that we could look back on and would truly feel transported back to our wedding day. I ended up only talking with one photographer, Kelsey Combe, and immediately knew she was the person for me. From her website I knew that her photos were beautiful and seemed to capture natural, organic wedding moments, but once we met I knew right away that she was such a genuinely nice person that I enjoyed talking to. She told me she never forgot any of her couples and could recall names and wedding dates for everyone she shot and I knew that this was the type of person I wanted with me on the day of my wedding. She truly captured what being at our wedding was like and made us look our best; her eye for natural lighting is absolutely unbelievable and she made me feel confident and beautiful the entire day!

In terms of flowers, I knew that I wanted something that had a soft, romantic vibe that would make the space feel intimate despite the fact we had almost 200 guests. The reception room was essentially a blank canvas so we knew we wanted something that would totally transform it. My floral designer Ruth was beyond patient with working with an unartistic person like myself and helped me refine my vision over many in person meetings and emails. Did I mention I basically knew nothing about flowers before this process, except that peonies were my favorite? I quickly learned those would not be in season for my September wedding and would need to be open minded to the hundreds of other beautiful florals that would be in season. Early on we decided to do a mix of round and long tables to make the room feel not overly uniform which would require different types of arrangements.

I loved the overall aesthetic of the flower arrangements we chose but my favorite aspect by far was the escort card table installation. In lieu of place cards we had each person’s table assignment written on a collection of antique mirrors. Then Ruth constructed a “flower frame” above the table with beautiful greens and an array of flowers including dahlias, ranunculus, hydrangeas, and garden roses in ivory, blush and lavender hues. Bubble candles, like the ones in the round table centerpieces, hung from the top of the installation which made the table seem to glow off the reflection of the mirrors.

Cocktail hour was on the deck of the club house which is right on the beach and looks over the Long Island Sound. As guests walked in they were greeted by steel drum music and signature cocktails (the groom’s drink was a Dark and Stormy and the bride’s drink was called Cool as a Cucumber; a vodka lemonade with muddled cucumber) with custom stirring straws. We also decided to an array of passed hor d’oeuvres, including a bite sized grilled cheese with a shot of tomato bisque and lobster mac and cheese served on a spoon. We also had a raw bar, which fit in perfectly with being right on the water.

My favorite memory of the day was getting to see TJ before the ceremony. It was amazing to get a few moments alone before the craziness of the day started. The photos from that part of the day are probably my favorite to look at, as it was the first moments when we really felt like the wedding was actually real.

Mint Green + Gold Sweet Brooklyn Winery Wedding

Cozy, chic and as sweet as the cake they sliced at the end of the night. This wedding may have been in the Big Apple but it was warm and welcoming, removed from the hustle and bustle at Brooklyn Winery. Soft mint greens and golds decked out the space and Brklyn View Photography captured it all for our eyes’ delight – see it all in our Vault right this way!

From Brklyn View PhotographySometimes when you meet the right person, you instantly click and you know in your heart you were meant to be together. For Sammie and Tomer, that was exactly the case. These two wonderful people are deeply in love, you immediately notice how they light up the room with laughter and smiles! Celebrating their wedding with delicious food, amazing wine and awesome music was very important and once they visited the Brooklyn Winery, they were smitten with the venue!

The bride wore a stunning lace gown and drool worthy, crystal encrusted heels by Badgley Mischka. The House of Makeup kept Sammie camera ready throughout the day which was an amazing treat for any bride-to-be. This sweet couple had their first look in Brooklyn Heights before heading over to Brooklyn Winery for their wedding ceremony and reception. Violet and Verde’s mix of white and green flowers created a beautiful muted color palette which helped bring their cozy chic vibe to life. Each bridesmaid wore a soft pale green dress by J. Crew and a unique gold bracelets engraved with the latitude and longitude coordinates where each lady first met the bride. How wonderful is that? Sammie and Tomer stood under the floral Chuppah as they exchanged their vows to become husband and wife. The newlyweds danced to Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” for their first dance and were simultaneously serenaded by all of Sammie’s bridesmaids. It was such a sweet and touching moment! Words cannot express how much being part of Sammie and Tomer’s wedding has meant to me. They are two of the kindest, sweetest and most fun couples I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know. I knew from the very first moment when we spoke, I was meant to be their wedding photographer and part of their love story forever.

They Planned a New Year’s Eve Wedding in 55 Days!

If you thought planning a wedding set smack dab in the middle of the holiday season was impressive, just you wait. Because this couple did that with only 55 days to make it happen. Thanks to the DM Events, along with 74 Events and Trent Bailey Studio behind the camera, you’ll see how just the right vendors helped bring together the New Year’s wedding of their dreams. Oh and this year? These two will now be celebrating as a sweet family of three.

From the Bride…Chris and I met in 2009 when we both worked at a large law firm in New York City. Our transition from colleagues to friends to dating took a brief four and a half years, but when we finally got together in August of 2013 it was clear to me that it had been him all along. Our relationship moved quickly after that, and on a chilly night in January of 2015 Chris proposed to me on the streets of Manhattan with the Chrysler Building as a backdrop.

Soon after, we started considering wedding options. I knew the exact feel I wanted for our wedding – an intimate, outdoor summer affair, full of soft light and natural, organic details. I spent hours browsing Style Me Pretty for inspiration images of peony-filled bouquets and soft-hued bridesmaid dresses. But that all changed in late October, when we unexpectedly found out that I would likely have some infertility issues. Our doctor told us that in order to have the best chance of conceiving naturally, we should move our family planning up as much as possible. Chris and I didn’t hesitate. We knew that having children was something we both wanted dearly, so I got to work.

We decided on a New Year’s Eve Wedding, which gave us exactly 55 days to plan. We couldn’t believe our luck when we found out that The Wythe Hotel, a venue we had previously toured and fell in love with, was available. We booked it immediately and everything started to fall into place. I eschewed the soft, organic details I had planned on for a color palette that was moody and romantic. The deep burgundy accents and pops of gold were a perfect complement to the industrial setting and already celebratory night. As the clock neared midnight, our friends and family all joined us on the dance floor to say farewell to 2015 and usher in 2016 in the most amazing way possible.

My favorite moment came when we had our first dance. We chose ‘It Had To Be You,’ – a song we picked from ‘When Harry Met Sally,’ which always somehow felt like our story – two friends, living on the Upper West Side, who eventually realize they were meant for each other all along. In those moments, time seemed to stop and for the first time that day it was just Chris and I, dancing to our story and enjoying everything that was taking place around us.

While our wedding looked nothing like what I had imagined, it turned out to be exactly what we needed. We were so lucky to have had the most incredible day and to start our lives together surrounded by our closest family and friends. Chris and I are now expecting a little girl in November, and we could not be more excited to celebrate this coming New Year’s Eve as a family of three.

Classic Central Park Celebration – Complete With a Donut Cake

Classic weddings are my jam but I reallyyyy like those with a little edge. And this one has it in spades. From the rings to the shoes, this Bride has style. But it didn’t stop there. Their wedding cake is by far my favorite one yet – a Momofuku birthday cake with a doughnut base. And with that, I’m sold. Merari Photography captured every detail for us to ooh and aah over – see them all in our Vault right this way!

From the Bride… Allan and I met in class freshmen year of college. Funny enough, we had most of our classes together and Allan willingly became my study buddy after I bribed him with food from the dining hall of course. We were first study partners, then good friends, and a few dates later the rest was history! After college, our relationship became long distance with Allan in upstate New York and myself in DC. On a weekend we had planned to be together in DC, Allan had to back out last minute so I made brunch plans with one of my friends. As we were walking to brunch along the Georgetown waterfront, we ran into this a cappella group singing. It turned out to be my friends from the a cappella group I sang with in college and out came our family members holding signs of the significant dates of our relationship. After we made it through the dates, Allan popped out proposing. It was such a memorable day and I’m so glad he had our family and friends involved.

As we started planning the wedding, we were going back and forth between venues in Maryland and New York. Once we saw the Central Park Boathouse, it was a no brainer to celebrate our marriage there. It’s such a beautiful venue and Central Park has always been special for us since it’s where we had one of our first dates. On our ten year dating anniversary, it just made sense to celebrate our marriage where it all began!

Since we chose the iconic Central Park Boathouse as our venue, we wanted our wedding to be timeless, classic, and romantic with hints of our personality. We wanted our venue to be flooded with florals and metallic details and the colors to be blush and gold mixed with other neutrals.

I absolutely loved our seating cards! I loved the idea of merging the wedding favor and seating card all in one. The simple bud vases with flowers coordinating our table arrangements were perfect. Once people brought them to their tables, it added to the table arrangement we had and made the tables look so beautiful flooded with flowers. I also loved our wedding cake. It was a mix of our two favorite desserts – Momofuku birthday cake and Dough doughnuts. Ask anyone of my friends and they’ll tell you Dough is one of my weaknesses.

Walking down the aisle is a memory I’ll never regret. I walked halfway down the aisle by myself and as I turned into the church, just seeing all of our family and friends was such a special moment. I met both my parents halfway down the aisle and they continued to walk with me. I loved having both of them walk me down the aisle. I can’t pinpoint just one favorite memory from the day, but when planning the wedding Allan and I just wanted our special day to be a big party with all of our family and friends. Halfway through the reception seeing everyone have fun was definitely the highlight of my day and sort of a sigh relief that all of the planning and prep was worth it!

If you had to do it over again, I don’t think I would have done anything differently! All of our vendors really made the day special and turned our dream into reality.

Elegance Was the Goal of This Backyard Wedding in the Hamptons

If you thought backyard weddings were a bore, think again because this sweet ceremony planned by Duke + Van Deusen is here to prove you wrong. Because not only did these sweethearts marry infront of a rose garden, the bride incorporated traditional in an incredible feat and folded 1,000 paper cranes to hang from the alter. It’s entertainment meets easy elegance and we’ve got every bit of beauty that unfolded underneath the Sperry Tents reception captured by Meg Miller Photography waiting in The Vault!

From the Bride…When I was 8 years old I was a flower girl in my Grandma’s wedding. She got married in front of the rose garden at my parent’s house in Quogue, NY. I always thought that wedding was perfect, and the rose garden was the perfect place to get married.

My husband, Byron, and I met at Gaffney’s, a bar in Saratoga Springs after the Travers Horse Race in 2011. I was there was some of my friends from Skidmore and he was there with a group of childhood friends. Hurricane Irene had just started and I was trying to get all of my friends to leave the bar before the storm escalated, but no one else seemed concerned so I went inside to get out of the rain and ended up sitting down next to Byron, who claims he’d been eyeing me from across the room.

Three years later, at the top of the tram in Jackson Hole. Wyoming, Byron popped the question. We celebrated our engagement at the top of the mountain with ice cold champagne that had been hidden in the snow earlier by a friend.

Back in Brooklyn, we started planning our wedding and I was thrilled to find out that Byron loved the idea of getting married in front of the rose garden at our house in Quogue as much as I did. We wanted our wedding to feel like an intimate, backyard wedding, despite the fact that we were inviting over 200 guests. With a year and half to plan our wedding, we enlisted the help of Duke and Van Deusen to help us make our vision a reality.

We didn’t want our ceremony to be too serious, but instead more fun and personal. Byron walked down the aisle with his mom and our cocker spaniel, Coco. We asked a family friend officiate (the same friend who had officiated my grandmother’s wedding, 21 years ago) and my uncle played guitar. My mom walked me down the aisle to “April Come She Will,” by Paul Simon, a song that had always been a family favorite. Byron and I wrote and recited our own vows and my mom read a passage from one of my favorite childhood books. Based on a Japanese tradition that is supposed to teach a bride patience, I folded 1000 white paper cranes which hung from our altar.

As the chef and owner of a farm to table catering company, Pickle and Link, I wanted to incorporate local produce into the floral décor, an idea that Ovando, our florist, executed perfectly. At dinner, all of the centerpieces were made up of flowers and potted herbs. The head table had a runner of eggplant, artichokes and cabbage. I hand wrote our guests names on all of the place cards which were then tied to a piece of rosemary.

Keeping with the backyard wedding vibe we had created, for dinner we had a family style BBQ by chef Peter Ambrose, complete with a whole roasted pig, cedar plank smoked bass and heaping amounts of creamy mac and cheese, so delicious that even I, the bride, made time to sit down and eat!

Our band, Eturnity Star, was so amazing that every wedding guest was on the dance floor from the moment they entered our amazing Sperry Tent. I was very lucky that my good friend and photographer, Meg Miller was there to capture the whole thing!

You’ve found that dress of your dreams and now it’s time to focus on putting the entire look together with hair and makeup.  Need help? Well, we’ve got you covered, because today we’re joining forces with Jennie Kay for a quick run-down on all things beauty with tips + tricks on achieving that glam wedding day look, no matter the gown or style you’re dreaming of. Let’s get started.

LOOK 1: CASUAL GLAMOUR

Your style? Laid-back with a big ol’ side of sophistication. Which means rocking a stunning gown that shows some skin and hair + make-up that is just as sleek and glamorous. Jennie Kay suggests pairing your dream dress with a rope braid pony or soft low bun that is dressy enough for a wedding, but is also completely effortless.

LOOK 2: VINTAGE ELEGANCE

You’re a vintage-inspired lady looking to rock that elegant lace number, but still maintain a modern, yet sexy edge. Jennie Kay’s tip? A bright red lip for that much-needed side of sophistication and a stunning updo that frames one side of the face, plus sweeps across the back in a beautiful style that is reminiscent of the past.

“Look at the way you wore your hair at your initial dress fitting. It usually mimics your initial idea on how your hair should be.” – Jennie Kay Beauty

LOOK 3: BOHO BEAUTY

Crave a look that is soft, romantic and free, just like you and your wedding? Then this fab boho look from Jennie Kay Beauty is sooo for you. Simply keep your hair natural in wave and texture and add three gorgeous braids for a little pop of WOW.  Want to add a little glamour to the look? Really make those eyes stand out with just the right shade of shadow and mascara.

LOOK 4: SWEETLY CLASSIC

For those of you who want to keep it sweet + classic on the Big Day, Jennie Kay suggests a low twisted ponytail that is equal parts show-stopping and wholesome. Pair it with subtle makeup (like a light pink lip) and a gown that has just a pop of sass and the results are absolutely timeless.

LOOK 5: TOUSLED SOPHISTICATION

Waves are a girl’s best friend and when it comes to a wedding day look that is equal parts laid-back and sophisticated, Jennie Kay keeps those tousled waves down with just a few sweet strands pulled back for a look that is all sorts of romantic. Add some soft pink lips and some barely-there makeup to complete the look.

An Ivory, Pink + Rose Gold Ballroom Affair

From NST Pictures… Danni and Matthew met on the first day of college…At Bed, Bath and Beyond! They already had mutual friends, but bumping into each other on the first day of school and then realizing they were in the same dorm quickly brought them together to become best friends and then start dating a year later. Seven years after that, they finally tied the knot at Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, New York!

It was an emotional day that was filled with tears of love and, of course, laughter. The first look with the bride and her parents couldn’t have been sweeter, with Danni dabbing her mother’s eyes with a tissue. With black tie on the chic invitation, friends and family showed up dressed to the nine’s and watched as the gorgeous couple were pronounced husband and wife under a beautiful chuppah. Amidst a color scheme of ivory, rose gold and pink, Danni and Matthew’s chic modern Jewish wedding was the perfect fairytale “happily-ever-after.”

From Love and Light Photographs Danni and Matt may have crossed paths with each other when they were 13 years old but it wasn’t until they traveled all they way to Bloomington, Indiana that they fell in love. On the very first day of school Danni spotted Matt at Bed, Bath and Beyond and found the courage to reintroduce herself. The two learned that they were living just one floor apart in the same dorm and instantly became best friends. Danni and Matt’s relationship started with a friendship, however, it was obvious to every single one of their friends that this blonde haired, blue-eyed couple were perfect for each other- and they were right!

After what felt like a very long summer apart, they returned to Indiana University for their sophomore year where Matt finally mustered the confidence to make his move. Since that day, their love has only continued to grow stronger and stronger, along with that amazing friendship that started it all.

Mimosas + Marriage = This Brooklyn Brunch Wedding

What do you get when you combine mimosas and matrimony? Why this colorful brunch wedding of course. It’s Brooklyn meets bold details and we’ve got it all captured by Emilia Jane Photography in The Vault!

From the Bride…Tom and I first met in high school in Orlando, FL and reconnected in New York City in November of 2013. He proposed on July 30, 2015 at the Top of the Standard in Manhattan.

New York City has been our home for a number of years and we wanted to celebrate our marriage in the city we both love. After touring many event spaces in Manhattan and Brooklyn, the River Cafe was our last stop in early September of 2015. We were both immediately drawn to this beautiful and historic restaurant next to the Brooklyn Bridge.

Many people asked why we chose to have a daytime wedding. The truth is, we not only wanted to do something a little bit different but we also wanted to show our closest family and friends why we enjoy living in NYC so much and what we like to do on a typical spring Saturday – enjoying the city with our friends!

We were married in an intimate ceremony in the private garden behind the River Café, overlooking downtown Manhattan. After the ceremony, we moved to the flower-bedecked terrace for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, followed by lunch in the garden room. It was doubly amazing when we noticed the FDNY fireboats shooting water in all directions behind us on the East River!

Having our wedding celebration at the River Cafe combined many things that we both love: a beautiful and historic setting by the Brooklyn Bridge, wonderful food at a Michelin star rated restaurant and breathtaking views of the NYC skyline.

Another favorite part of the wedding planning process for me was working with wedding dress designer, Samantha Sleeper. I found her line in a tiny boutique in Brooklyn and decided to reach out to her directly to meet her. Soon after visiting her studio in Gowanus I found the dress of my dreams, a beautiful combination of lace and flower embroidery. After working together from January to May, we became friends and she also attended our wedding.

Having a daytime wedding celebration was a dream come true for us and our families and we could not be happier with our choice.

Florals + Creative Cuisine Come Together for this Rustic Wedding

Blue Hill at Stone Farms has been on my “must visit” list since the day I was first introduced to this foodie haven and the idea of saying “I do” there gets my taste buds buzzing immediately. But add in all the floral beauty created by The Little Glass Slipper and it upgrades to one fabulously rustic wedding wonderland. Tory Williams captured it allflowers and food – for our gallery right this way!

From the Bride… Matt and I first met during a night out in downtown Charleston. We were both in college and met through a mutual friend. We talked, danced, and eventually exchanged phone numbers. We had our first date a couple of days later. It was the first and last time that Matt cooked for me. While the meal itself wasn’t quite memorable, this shy, cute, intelligent and sweet boy was. We have had almost seven amazing years together sharing our love for travel, sports and food. We are currently living in Boston until Matt finishes grad school in May of ’16.

The proposal happened on the night of May 8, 2015. We had tickets to go to a concert, “Of Monsters and Men,” in Boston. I was coming from work, running a bit late, so we hurried right into the venue. The night seemed nothing from the ordinary as we casually got dinner and then grabbed a night cap at a local hotel bar. As we decided to call it a night, Matt suggested that we take the elevator down. As we stepped in, Matt pressed the #17 button and dropped on one knee. I think we actually rode up and down a couple of times during the emotion and excitement, but once we finally got out he had a room booked with champagne waiting on ice. It was the best night of my life.

From A Kismet Meeting in the Elevator to “I Do’s” in Brooklyn

It’s one of those stories you hear about from time to time but wonder, is that how it really happened? In this case, it sure did! These two met in the elevator of their apartment building and well, after a couple more run-ins… let’s just say the rest is history. But not before they kicked it all off with a spring celebration filled with cherry blossoms and sweetness. Brklyn View Photography captured it allsee their happily ever after right this way!

From Brklyn View PhotographyThe story of how Nadia and Tim met sounds like it’s the plot of your favorite romantic movie. They met in the elevator of their apartment building in Brooklyn. It was love at first sight and after a few weeks of bumping into each other, Tim finally asked Nadia out and the rest, they say, is history! The happy couple wanted to celebrate their wedding in the place where their love story began and Brooklyn was the only choice. They chose Maison May (formerly iCi Restaurant) in Fort Greene for it’s quaint location, gorgeous outside garden and of course, delicious food.

Nadia wore a stunning structured wedding dress and veil from Carol Hannah. She splurged on her blue studded Valentino shoes and wore her grandmother’s crystal vintage necklace and earrings for her something old and borrowed. Nadia’s bridesmaids each chose their own dresses. The only prerequisites were that they had to be blush and sparkly – so pretty! The bride and groom got ready separately at the Wythe Hotel before heading to the church in Manhattan. Tim was in awe of his blushing bride as she was escorted down the aisle by her Father and Step-Father. After their wedding ceremony, we headed back to Brooklyn to the breathtaking grounds of the Pratt Institute to take their bridal party portraits.

It was peak cherry blossom season in New York City and we took full advantage of the lush garden and fresh blooms. Guests arrived at Maison May and were treated to glasses of champagne in celebration of the nuptials. Custom table names were created by Laura Hooper Calligraphy that represented important Brooklyn streets and locations that were meaningful to the couple. Each place setting was set with a package of lavender shortbread as their wedding favors. The intimate space of Maison May was perfect for their small wedding. Guests dined al fresco outside in the garden under the string lights. Nadia and Tim’s wedding day was perfect from start to finish and I’m so happy that they asked me to be part of such a lovely celebration.

They Pulled off a Garden Wedding in the City

The task? Plan a lush, organic, Napa-inspired wedding…and do it in the middle of New York City. Luckily, floral genius DESIGNS BY AHN didn’t even flinch but instead took their vision and ran with it. The result is an urban garden party photographed by Sawyer Baird and there’s a whole lot more this way in The Vault.

From the Bride…When it came to planning our own wedding, my husband and I knew we didn’t want to get married at a banquet hall. As a native Californian, it only made sense to be surrounded by nature but since my husband wanted hard liquor served at our wedding, a Napa venue was out of the question. We also found it difficult planning a wedding across the states amidst our busy work schedules. I was then recommended by two of my coworkers to check out the Foundry. The Foundry was definitely a stunning unique space amidst a desolate area. What drew me in was the lush ever growing ivy wrapped around the exterior of the old restored building and inside the greenhouse. I never imagined finding a garden venue in the city. Even though my husband and I had our concerns of the limited capacity the space could hold it helped us narrow our guest count to our closest family and friends.

After selecting the venue, everything else fell into place. I am usually drawn to neutral, organic and very simple aesthetics. Since the venue is naturally beautiful in itself, it allowed me to keep decorations minimally romantic with lots of greenery, candles, and ivory flowers. It tied back to my flowing gown, the bridesmaids’ long chiffon dresses and lush ribboned bouquets. We opted out of the bridal party prom look and had the groomsmen in classic dark navy suits while my husband wore a midnight blue and black tuxedo. My florist, Victoria of Designs by Ahn took my vision and created something more than what I dreamed it would look.

My amazing calligrapher, Esther Clark, whose style I adore, created all the delicate organic paper pieces for the day. Our DJ, James Mulry played our favorite rock songs during cocktail hour and then uptempo beats after dinner. With the help of our caterer everything was cohesive, lush and absolutely beautiful. Our wedding definitely looked like a secret garden party and served as an amazing backdrop for photos.

Planning for the wedding can at times be overwhelming especially during an extreme work schedule but it was well worth it in the end because we got to celebrate the love we have for each other with all of the wonderful people in our lives ALL on the same coast and city at the same time. And there may never be a time when that happens again. We only wished the party lasted a few more hours.

Learn What Danish Word Inspired This Black Tie Wedding

Lesson of the day, inspiration can literally come from anywhere. Ask this beautiful bride who used the Danish word “hyggeligt” to plan this entire affair. Loosely translated, she wanted an intimate celebration complete with flickering candlelight surrounded by loved ones and boy oh boy did she nail it. Captured by Clayton Austin we’ve got every cozy moment waiting for you to fall for via The Vault!

From the Bride…My vision for our wedding was to create an atmosphere and experience for our family and friends of hyggeligt (a Danish idea that is hard to translate in English). I studied in Copenhagen during my junior year abroad and that was the first time I was exposed to hyggeligt, which is loosely understood as comfort, intimacy, flickering candlelight, and the joy of sharing time with loved ones. We wanted the evening to have three stages: a romantic sunset ceremony, an elegant dinner party with great food and lots of wine, and then a wild dance party under the stars.

Peach and blush are my two favorite colors so we began our color palette there. For the ceremony, our florist Ariella incorporated coral for a pop of color to keep the bridesmaids’ bouquets bright and festive in contrast to my lighter and whiter bouquet. As the last weekend of summer, we wanted the color palette to transition from more summery colors for the ceremony to fall tones for the dining room arrangements, so we incorporated darker reds and plums in our centerpieces as well. Dan is colorblind so creating contrast in our palette was a priority! To honor the harvest season, we used figs and plums and vegetables to augment our flowers. The style I imagined was a secret garden that our guests happened upon where there was a formal dinner party underway. With that image in mind, it was important to me that the flowers breathe and look natural and airy. Ariella was the perfect choice as a florist to create a chuppah and centerpieces that were elegant but captured the feeling of a garden coming to life. She also created a stunning panel of ferns and moss to add greenery and texture to our family portraits.

We were blessed with perfect weather and so our ceremony was set up outside in the courtyard at Blue Hill. Our florist, Ariella, had suggested arranging the ceremony in the round to take advantage of the expanse of the courtyard. Dan and I loved being surrounded by our bridal party seated on fabric ottomans and then our extended family and friends encircling the bridal party. For us, having the ceremony in the round brought to life the tradition of the chuppah being open and welcoming on all sides. Dan and I wrote our own vows in part based on the text of a letter my high school English teacher wrote me. I’ve kept this letter since high school because the message he conveyed in it has meant more to me over the years than I can say. We combined some of Mr. Mellonig’s words with the other pledges we wanted to make to each other. Finally, Rabbi Darcie Crystal chanted the traditional Seven Marriage Blessings in Hebrew, but we also had members of our bridal party read a modern interpretation of the blessings, coming up one at a time to read to us.

After we signed our marriage license and ketubah, the bridal party walked through Blue Hill’s kitchen to avoid being seen by our guests who were already seated in the courtyard for the ceremony. Blue Hill has a beautiful tradition that everyone in the kitchen stops to salute the bride and groom as they walk through by banging their pots and pans and cheering. The noise was profound and carried such enthusiasm and encouragement. Dan and I were incredibly touched by this gesture made by complete strangers who were already working so hard to make our day special. Of all the crafted details, Dan and I really enjoyed the process of designing our wedding invitations and other wedding paper created for us by Bianca of Little Miss Press. Our save-the-date featured Blue Hill’s flower cart and Bianca helped us create ceremony fans to serve as programs. I love texture and ribbon and even spied some on Bianca’s Instagram that I loved, so our program fans and our escort cards were tied with different types of textured metallic ribbon, which for me added that special touch.

My mother selected my gown and I selected hers. With almost all of the other details for the wedding, I had a very clear vision of what I wanted, but when it came to my dress I really struggled to make my selection. In the end, I chose my gown because I loved the thin layers of the tulle, the lightness of the dress, and the tone on tone beading. The dress was appliqued and beautifully beaded with pearls so the dress sparkled without having any sequins. I still look at my dress and the matching veil all the time! Dan and I also spent quite a bit of time deciding on the flavors for our wedding cake. I think the cake tasting was the absolute highlight of the wedding planning experience for Dan and he spent much time and energy on it, even organizing a cake tasting 30th birthday party for me so our close friends could come to our apartment to taste cake and vote on their favorite flavor combinations. Of course, our friends all went rogue and wrote in their own combinations, so we did not have much help in making our final selection, but we did have fun!

My best advice is to rely on people who you know are reliable. Be honest with yourself in identifying who among your friends and family are interested and well suited to helping you on your big day. If there are little details that are incredibly important to you (a specific photograph or retrieving the broken glass), but that can be easily forgotten by you in all of the excitement, communicate them ahead of time to your most trusted bridesmaids, friends, or family members. Those individuals really want to be helpful and it will take the pressure off you to remember every little last thing and just enjoy the moment, because it goes by so fast and there are no do-overs!

Synonym of softness and purity, yet sensual and free, the gowns evolve through time. Our muse parades embellished by milky soft fabrics resembling divine immaculate snow. From the Bride… Carson and I were married at Buttermilk Falls Inn in Milton, New York overlooking the Hudson River. Having been raised on separate coasts, we wanted to find a location outside of the city that felt like an intimate weekend getaway for all of our friends and family. Buttermilk Falls was the first location we visited and we immediately knew this was the place we wanted to get married. The grounds overlooking the river are stunning and we loved that we could create the wedding of our dreams on the property. We wanted the weekend to feel special and unique and encapsulate who Carson and I are as a couple. It was amazing having our immediate family and bridal party stay with us at the Inn for the entire wedding weekend, everywhere we turned we were surrounded by loved ones.

We wanted our wedding to feel elegant and understated, and wanted to highlight the beautiful grounds of the Inn and the Hudson River in the background. We encouraged guests to take advantage of the Hudson River Valley in the Fall- peak foliage season! All of our guests received a hand drawn map of the area along with a weekend itinerary created by Village Invites, who also designed our beautiful invitation suite. Friday night we hosted our rehearsal dinner in the barn at the Inn and the night ended with a surprise karaoke party, everyone was singing and dancing into the night- a great sign for the big day ahead.

The ceremony took place overlooking the swan pond, and Anthology strings played beautiful versions of some of our favorite songs for the procession and recession. For the cocktail hour and reception we served seasonal fare that highlighted vegetables grown at the Buttermilk farm along with other farm-to-table delights.

Dennis Nutley of the Green Cottage really captured our floral vision. He created beautiful arrangements for the cocktail hour along with stunning garlands that ran the length of the farm house tables. We wanted to highlight the beauty of the wooden tables so we kept the table scape free of linens and let the florals shine, accentuated by votive candles.

The reception tent was truly one of the decor highlights. We wanted to feel like we were dancing under the stars, and Events Unlimited provided the clear span tent with views of the Hudson River to one side and the Inn on the other. Stortz Lighting created a magical chandelier of twinkle lights above the dance floor.

The Stingers provided the BEST music we could have ever asked for. The dance floor was packed even before the cocktail reception officially ended. We were even treated to a very special performance by Carson’s cousins, which made the evening even more unforgettable.

Following the reception, everyone was invited to the after party held at one of Buttermilk’s cottages right on the Hudson River. The dancing continued into the wee hours of the morning.

Lydia Bailey for Charmed Places made our entire wedding vision a reality, no detail was spared and she made our wedding the best day of our lives.

The perfect venue. The perfect details. The perfect wedding.

They say when you know, you know… and for this darling duo and their search for the perfect seaside venue, that statement couldn’t have been more true. Because the second they stepped foot into the Montauk Yacht Club, they knew THIS was the place they would host their incredibly thoughtful + classic day. From their beautiful invites from Bella Figura to their popcorn place cards to their heartfelt moments all captured by Brklyn View Photography.  See it all in THE VAULT right this way.

From the Bride… Since the beginning of our relationship seven years ago, Brian and I have shared a love of visiting lighthouses. When we arrived at the Montauk Yacht Club during our venue search and saw that they were not only just down the road from the famous Montauk Lighthouse but that they had their own small lighthouse featured in the middle of the hotel, we knew we had found the perfect place.

As we began our planning, we decided we wanted our wedding to have three things; all of our activities at one location (from the rehearsal dinner to the ceremony to the reception to the day after brunch), a getaway feeling for our guests so they could properly unwind, relax and celebrate and finally bursts of both of our personalities throughout. We often read during our research that after picking the venue, everything else is simple – and it happened exactly that way for us. The venue search was a bit stressful, we saw many places, but neither of us felt a connection to any of them until we arrived at the Montauk Yacht Club. It was our third venue visit that day (the other two were disappointments) and the last one we had scheduled – and luckily we walked in and felt it – that connection. After that, as they say, all the pieces fell into place.

We were able to create a three day weekend for most of our guests (we both have very big families so more than half the wedding was invited to the rehearsal dinner) which allowed everyone to relax and take advantage of the Montauk Yacht Club’s numerous activities – from spa services to water sports. This made us so happy. One other big advantage of having all our events at the same location all our guests were staying at was that it eliminated any transportation or driving for the whole weekend. We think this allowed everyone to relax a little bit more knowing they didn’t need to worry about any logistical issues.

We let our personalities shine through at every opportunity we could over the weekend. We wanted our wedding to be unique but more importantly, we wanted everyone to feel like they knew us a little bit better as a couple when they left. We started this with custom ceremony programs that featured a timeline of our relationship, highlighting major and memorable moments as well as a breakdown of our relationship by the numbers – showing how many movies we had ever seen together, how many birthdays we had celebrated together and so forth. It continued with Brian’s father officiating the ceremony and us reading our own vows to each other. We felt like it was like no other ceremony we had ever been so, and it was very much ours.

The cocktail hour featured a playlist curated by Christianna as well as a few of our favorite foods including two different types of hot dogs and macaroni and cheese. The wedding began with guests picking up their place cards which were fastened to the front of small boxes of popcorn – Brian’s favorite snack and heading to their tables which were marked with pictures of both of us at the age of their table number. Throughout the reception we included more personal touches like a cigar table featuring my father’s favorite brand and our mothers’ signature cookies and our favorite frozen yogurt, 16 Handles, for dessert.

As we look back on the day, I still cry when I think about the ceremony and Brian remembers how happy he was that our personalities shined through so much. If we can give one piece of advice to couples planning their own weddings it would be to remember that your wedding should reflect you both – from your favorite colors, the hobbies you share, and even the hot dog recipes you both love. Make it yours!
