Long Island City Wedding at The Foundry from loli events

Growing up in Montana, I used to spend hours daydreaming of running off to New York, making it big (as a Broadway songstress, of course) and living in some hip, up and coming neighborhood in an uber-amazing loft.  I dreamt big.  So, whenever I have the privilege of writing a New York-based post for you all, the inner 15-year-old in me gets just a tad bit excited.  Especially when that post is a wedding held at The Foundry with a sweet vintage vibe and beyond impeccable styling from loli events.  That’s what we call a trifecta of wedding goodness – and you can see every last moment captured by Weddings By Two in the full gallery right here.

Bask in even more of this gorgeous day with this amazing film from Hello Super Studios.  Enjoy!

From the Bride… I think some of my initial inspiration came from looking at old photographs of my parents’ wedding and Josh’s grandparents’ wedding. When I looked at some of the pictures, I remember thinking to myself, “I want that.” I wanted an understated, timeless, elegant affair. It started by finding the perfect venue: The Foundry in Long Island City. There is nothing ordinary about it, and it exudes that sort of timeless vintage feel that Josh and I like. Then we settled on June 23 as a date. I wanted the day to be one of the longest days of the year, for obvious reasons. That helped with the inspiration for flowers and colors. As a summer wedding, we wanted everything to be in season, fresh and light. Josh’s grandmother lives on Nantucket and has the most beautiful hydrangeas around her house. As sort of a nod to Josh’s grandmother, it was important to me that hydrangeas, which are in bloom in June, were part of the arrangements. I let our florist decide everything else. They suggested white peonies, lavender, poppy pods and berries, and they also talked about café lights over the dance floor and candles — basically they blew me away.

Once the aesthetic details were taken care of, it came down to the most important aspects of a wedding: food and music! For music I would have gone with all Sinatra, all the time (that vintage timeless thing again) but obviously that didn’t go over well with Josh. When I explained to our band the desire to have a 1940’s French café-type ambiance to the cocktails and dinner followed by a rocking dance party, they made it happen. For the processional they managed to play Blue Danube, which was very important to my mother. It was the first song that played on the car’s radio when my parents took me home from the hospital after I was born.

Another source of inspiration was my Slovak heritage. It was very important to me to include Slovak traditions throughout the wedding. Both of my parents are Slovak, and a lot of my family from Slovakia came to the wedding. So from the ceremony where I broke a plate and Josh swept it up, to the dinner which began with shots of Slivovica (plum brandy), to dancing to Slovak folk songs, and to the party gifts of handmade Slovak corn husk dolls (which my mother brought back in her suitcase over several trips back and forth from our village in Slovakia), I felt like my heritage was weaved throughout the evening.

Lastly, a big source of our inspiration was our Brooklyn lifestyle. As I mentioned before we’re into the local food and vintage stuff craze that is omnipresent in the great borough of Brooklyn. Josh and I also brew our own beer and pickle and build stuff. We wanted to share our love of beer and our hipster skills by brewing our own beer for the wedding — we called it “Something Bottled, Something Brewed.” We also had Brooklyn Candy as place holders and party favors. My dad even joined in on the fun and brought cigars from Miami (my hometown) that he designed the labels for. On a more personal note, Josh and I also took a jewelry making course and made our own wedding bands. We now know how to solder.

NYC Wedding at The Metropolitan Building from Tory Williams Photography

It’s official, I have a new favorite wedding venue. Seriously, how amazing is The Metropolitan Building? And what is especially amazing is the fact that you can use all their gorgeous items for your wedding, which just happens to make for the most beautiful vintage chic wedding ever. Case in point, this stunning soiree sent into us by the talented Tory Williams Photography. Oh, how I wish I were a guest at this wedding! Click here for even more.

From the Bride… When Pete and I began planning for our wedding, our goal was to find an unusual space that people wouldn’t necessarily expect for a wedding. We wanted a place that was casual, not too stuffy or formal, but still grown-up. The first time we visited the Metropolitan Building in Long Island City, we knew immediately that it was exactly what we were looking for. Standing outside of the building, you would never expect to have such an elegant space behind those walls. Being on the second floor makes you feel like you’ve entered a different time period, somewhere in Paris or Vienna, with the chandeliers, architectural details and antiques spread around the space.

We decided to go with a vintage theme, incorporating much of what the Metropolitan had to offer for our décor. We used their antique chairs, tables and sculptures. We asked our florist, Barbara from Opalia Flowers, to create centerpieces and bouquets that had vintage, garden-like feelings to them. She used dusty pink garden and spray roses, cream dahlias, scabiosa pods, grey dusty miller and seeded eucalyptus for the arrangements set in vintage bottles and mercury glass vases. I wore an all-lace, vintage-inspired dress by Jim Hjelm, which fit the setting perfectly. Bryn from Paperfinger created table cards with beautiful sketches of cities that we love around the world. The table cards went along with the sketch like-feel of our wedding invitations which Paperfinger also created for us. To promote the casual feeling we wanted to set for the wedding, we had a photo booth and fun props for our guests. It was a huge hit, and many guests visited it more than once! To go along with the photo theme, we also hung fun photos of Pete and me as kids and pictures of our adventures together over the past 10 years.

The second most important decision we made for the wedding, besides the venue, was picking our photographer. There are so many talented photographers in New York, so the choice can be pretty overwhelming! There was no doubt in my mind after the first meeting with Tory Williams that she was the perfect photographer for us. Not only is she a genius behind the camera, she is an absolute pleasure to work with. She immediately puts you at ease and makes you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. She has a fun, upbeat personality while never being pushy or obtrusive. We had so much fun working with her, and we now have the most beautiful pictures that we will cherish forever! Our wedding was such a magical day, full of so much love and happiness! The Metropolitan Building was the perfect setting for our celebration, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. We are so thankful for all of our wonderful vendors, friends and family for helping us put together such an unforgettable day.

Long Island City Wedding at The Foundry from Karen Hill Photography

One look at this wedding, and I knew. I knew that my morning would be consumed with drooling over every bit of this fête at The Foundry, that my to-do list would be put to the side, and that I would be camped out in the gallery for an embarrassing amount of time. I knew it was serious when I postponed my necessary cup of coffee to swoon over the images by Karen Hill Photography just one.more.time. The flowers by Saipua? Just beyond. The sweet pup? Pulling at my heart strings. The couple? Classic yet contemporary and SO in love. It’s just too much lovely – making for a gallery I just can’t stay away from. See it all here.

From Karen Hill PhotographyThe wedding of Jiwon and Jin took place on June 30 at The Foundry in Queens with their dog Monkey, a French bulldog, in attendance. The flowers were amazing! I love the decor and the big group shot of both extended families, including Jiwon‘s Korean grandparents! She has identical twin brothers. She also changed into a second dress for the reception. A lot of laughter, love and fun at this wedding!

From the Bride… Jin and I did not want a big ballroom wedding. On a whim, we visited the Foundry, fell in love and put down the deposit right away. We knew our dog, Monkey, had to be a part of the ceremony, so the fact that Foundry allowed pets was a big plus. Jin, with his graphic design background, designed and printed the invitations, menus and place cards. Everything else just fell into place as we had Tzo Ai from Ang Weddings and Events guiding us through it all. Our wedding was a blast! We got to enjoy every moment of it.

Long Island City Wedding at The Foundry from Isabelle Selby Photography

There are few spaces that I love as much as The Foundry on Long Island. It’s modern but soulful. It’s city but a touch country. It’s girl, but boy too. It’s all together perfect and I’ve yet to see a single wedding there that I didn’t fall head over heals for. BUT. When you add in a touch of Isabelle Selby Photography, florals by Saipua and a black tie meets Anthropology vibe…well love doesn’t even do it justice. Click here to see the whole stunning celebration.

From the Bride… Alex and I knew the second we got engaged that we wanted to get married at the Foundry — we had been to a fundraiser there earlier in the year and fell in love with the intimacy of the space. We both come from large families, and it was important to us to create a family environment, with family-style food and a ceremony that all of our friends and family would be involved in. We were so lucky to find vendors who were willing to work with us to creating the celebration we dreamed of — the dress maker was even kind enough to make me the dress I loved in the non-traditional rose color I was looking for. We wanted everyone to know how much it meant to us to have them there, so we made many of the elements — including the invitations, candle holders and gifts — ourselves, with one of our best friends making all of the deserts. All in all, we were lucky enough to be married by a good friend, surrounded by our loved ones, and dance and celebrate the night away like we had always wanted.

Queens County Farm Museum Wedding from Justine Bursoni Photography

It really doesn’t get any better than a pretty farm wedding. Maybe I say that because I just got back from a weekend in farm country, but really, the fresh open air, rolling hills, and lots of cute little animals bring out the nature lover in us all. And when we tie that together with a wedding? Well, magic things happen. Like this casually chic and oh-so-pretty wedding by Justine Bursoni Photography. It’ll turn any city girl into a country one just like that. See each and every last detail right here in the full gallery!

From the Bride… I’ve pretty much been wedding obsessed for as long as I can remember. When I knew that the engagement was coming I was obsessed with stalking wedding blogs. I really loved the new trend of farm weddings because there is SO much you could do to make it your own. I love how casual, yet chic, it could be at the same time. I also wanted a wedding where we knew each and every one of our guests. I’m not a fan of inviting people just to invite them; the purpose of a wedding is to get married to the person you love and celebrate that with the people you love, and I think we achieved that. I also knew the perfect farm would be the Queens County Farm because not only is it close and affordable, but also because I grew up in Queens and have been going to this farm ever since I was a little girl.

My sister-in-law, Karrie, and my sister, Lindsey, really helped me throughout the entire process, even though they both were out of state for the majority of the planning. Karrie lives in Missouri, and Lindsey goes to school in Virginia. The Thursday before the wedding, they both came over and we took a trip to Costco to load up on flowers — we got such an amazing deal! Those were for the centerpieces and the bouquets, which were made that Thursday as well. All of the salad dishes that the tables were set with were dishes Chris and I collected at thrift stores and flea markets, and the same goes for every single item we used for our centerpieces. I’m obsessed with jars. Our cake cutter/server was also from the thrift store — $5 for the set.

I bought a huge roll of burlap and made the table squares, as well as a ton of vintage-inspired fabric on Etsy for the napkins. Chris and I sat for months cutting out 100+ napkins with pinking shears. It was definitely tedious work, but they turned out awesome. I also used the fabric scraps to make the cupcake flags. The cards box was DIY also; we bought the actual box from Home Goods and the letters from Michael’s. We painted the letters white, and Chris attached it all with pieces of wood and cut a slot for the cards. Chris also made the escort card display. For the escort cards, I bought the parcel tags and stamped each guests’ name and tables number on them, and we used old clothespins found in our basement from the original owners’ clothesline to hang them. We found the side tables that were used to hold the bathroom baskets and the water at the ceremony at the thrift store and free on Craigslist. I also made the cake stand that held our small cake.

The whole process was definitely stressful at times. DIY can be tough, but in the end it turned out exactly the way I wanted it. I am so thankful I had a groom who was super-involved and there to calm me down when I freaked out over the little things. I love that our wedding was not your typical wedding. All of our guests said they had an awesome time and thought everything turned out great. That’s all I wanted — for my guests to enjoy themselves.

Metropolitan Building Wedding from Elisabeth Millay Photography

This wedding was a beast to put together. Not for lack of detail or sentiment. In fact, it was the exact opposite. I found myself struggling between showcasing the many beautiful elements woven into the day or scrapping it all and going with the take-your-breath-away moments that Elisabeth Millay captured. So I settled for a bit of both. Wild, gorgeous florals by Saipua next to the butterfly-in-your-stomach seconds before the Bride walked down the aisle; vintage key escort cards and a million other thoughtful details crafted by the Bride and executed by Green Apple Weddings intermingling with that crazy good first kiss. It’s love like this that makes me fall head over heels for my job time and again. A palpable kind of love that shines through in each and every image in the gallery and right on through to the sweet film by Tree of Life Films.

From the Bride… Adam and I are by so much love and so many mutual friends, and over the course of a slow courtship, a friendship was built on solid foundation. We are so grateful to the people along our journey that served as examples of love, support, patience and open-mindedness, and we hoped the thought put into our wedding could be a gift back to them and a show of gratitude for all we have been given. The Metropolitan Building was the first venue we saw, and we knew instantly it was perfect. As a designer and art director, the regal, yet undone setting inspired me, and I knew there would be opportunity to create many beautiful projects to suit the space and surround our guests with details that reflect us.

A part of the wedding experience that I had not realized would be such a gift were the relationships we made with such a talented and professional vendor team. We quickly booked DJ Gaza who was reviewed extensively and who delivered exactly what we asked for: to have all ages on the floor, all night. Adam and I both liked the dreamy, soft, documentary style of Elisabeth Millay’s photography and were so comfortable with her presence and with her work. We had spent a lot of time in Long Island City, which is why we were happy to have been led to this perfect venue right in the neighborhood and we had also enjoyed a few intimate lunches at Sage General Store and were so happy to hear they catered weddings. Leslie at Sage was wonderful to work with and very flexible with our budget and our ideas. And their food was absolutely delicious!

Although we love being outside and near water, we decided to have our ceremony at the venue to make it easier for our guests. Plus, we loved the Metropolitan Building so much we wanted to extend the time we would be there! Our florist Saipua sourced gorgeous gold chenille curtains with a bit of tooth to them for our backdrop, which were flanked by two rustic wood pillars that held loose arrangements of flowering spirea. Adam and I were so grateful to have made Jeddah Vailakis our interfaith minister. There was an overabundance of joyful tears shed by us and by our friends and family and the love in the room could not be measured. The tables were dressed in pale gray linens with an assortment of mercury glass vases of varying sizes, tapers and votive candle holders. Our florist, Saipua, used lush blooms in pale pink, coral, aubergine, cream, and dusty greens for the arrangements that were placed in silver, footed bowls. The table numbers were hand-drawn by Antiquaria and placed in pressed paper frames I had purchased from BHLDN. I designed the menus and printed them on silver, foil-stamped card stock and hand set small pearls to separate menu items. These were tucked into hemstitched napkins.

The day was beyond what we had hoped for and our guests are still talking about the wedding to this day saying it was the best they had been to from food, music, ceremony, to all of the loving details. We are so grateful to our incredibly talented vendor team and for all of the love our friends and family surrounded us with that day. We could not be happier.

Long Island City Wedding at The Foundry from CLY Creation

Just one look at this Bride’s face as she made her way down the aisle to meet her Groom was all I needed to fall head over heels in love with fête at The Foundry. It’s a priceless moment captured so beautifully by CLY Creation I can barely stand it. Those moments get me every.single.time. It shouldn’t be a surprise that the rest of the wedding is equally as beautiful – from the blooms to the cake and everything in between, and it’s all waiting for you with open arms right here.

The couple met in front of Butler Library eight years ago when they were attending Columbia University. The groom stood by the bride’s side when her mother suddenly passed way two years into their relationship, and she stood by his side when he was pulling all-nighters and working weekends while he was working as an investment banker. The groom proposed to the bride by the fountain in Lincoln Center in March 2011 and took the bride to Per Se for dinner to celebrate their engagement and surprised the bride by throwing a party afterwards surrounded by their friends. Soon after, the couple started searching for the perfect venue and the bride did not like any venues that they looked at in Manhattan. They wanted an intimate wedding of no more than 100 guests but did not want a crammed space. The groom suggested the Foundry, and they booked the venue on the spot.

This wedding was a perfect DIY project for the bride and the bridesmaids. The bride chose ivory and lavender shades and later added pale pink and dove gray. The bride’s friend carefully designed the invitations and edited programs and menu cards from a DIY website. The bridal party and the bride’s friends spent hours tying ribbons on the programs and menu cards. The “Bride and Groom” sign also was a DIY job. At the bride’s request, one of the bride’s close friends made gorgeous copper wire stands for the table number cards. The wedding favors, mini doughnuts, were carefully put in open window, eco-friendly, brown boxes.

The couple did not hire a wedding planner or a day-of coordinator. They gave a detailed schedule to the wedding party and their vendors, and the groom stepped in on the day of the wedding to create a hiccup-free wedding. The couple worked with Larry from Stortz Lighting to create the breathtaking chandeliers that would seamlessly blend in with rustic brick walls and transform the place into a romantic venue. The bride worked with Larry every step of the way to create the chandeliers, and they were able to transform the raw, rustic Foundry into a timelessly romantic wedding venue. The bride and her bridesmaids carefully selected all the furniture and table tops, from the metal finished rustic tables to unpolished silverware to further create the rustic and romantic atmosphere. For the floral design, the bride chose cream and lavender. A family friend created the centerpieces and bouquets using seasonal spring flowers such as peony, lilac and ranunculus. Cherry blossom branches were placed on each side of the altar during the ceremony. Strings of white orchids were carefully hung on the big floor to ceiling windows of the main hall, the greenhouse and also on the fire place in the greenhouse. After the dinner in the main hall, the couple had their cake-cutting ceremony in the greenhouse. Their wedding cake, a green tea cake with raspberry buttercream topped off with white fondant, was created by Silk Cakes. Followed by the cake-cutting, the groom surprised the bride by serenading her. The couple ordered Laudree macaroons and Chikalicious’ petit fours in addition to cupcakes to create a yummy dessert station. The wedding came to an end when Korilla food truck came. The bride wanted a perfect hangover food for her guests. The guests enjoyed the Korean-style burritos and tacos.

From MLKL PhotographyThis styled shoot combines my passions for fashion and wedding photography. As a photographer, I don’t just shoot weddings, I work with my bride to dream up a wedding day completely unique to her style and passions, rendering photos that artfully represent what makes her day one of a kind. It’s all about personalization. And, in this shoot – it’s all about deer! Deer? Yes Dear, Deer!

In this shoot, the bride is a passionate advocate of animal rights, stemming from a great love for all things mammal — and, most of all, deer. As a refined, classic bride with an uncanny appreciation for high fashion and the avante garde, she boldly integrates artful gestures of her animal affection throughout her wedding day. With antler earring studs, a painted deer cake topper hand carved from white-chocolate by the very talented Elegantly Iced, and a stunning antler head piece in place of a veil (beautifully adorned with flowers by the Brooklyn boutique Graceful Gardens), she tastefully creates a day unique to her style and her passion. Everything was photographed in Long Island City’s stunning venue, The Foundry, this summer.

The beauty of a deer antler was the inspiration for much of this shoot. In addition to their incredible shape, the symbolism proves intriguing. While antlers are typically found mostly on male deer, it is known that some species of does have the capacity to produce antlers during periods of fertility. Being that antlers are naturally shed by the deer and have a long history of ornamental use, this animal advocate naturally selected antlers to be her main tribute to the deer throughout her wedding day inspiration.

New York Fairytale Elopement from Tree of Life Films on Vimeo.

From Teissia + Alia of Firefly EventsAs a New York-based wedding planning and design company, Firefly Events is constantly on the lookout for ways to infuse the glamor of the city with a sense of playfulness. We love to reflect the urban lifestyle of our clients while still keeping the aesthetic creative and fun. A recent trip to Paris, coupled with a new-found obsession with Biba, a vintage British clothing line, had us spending most of the winter months dreaming up combinations of soft feminine lines and bold dramatic accents. This inspired us to create this bohemian affair that was fit for the big city, just in time for Spring!

The Greenhouse space at The Foundry provided our backdrop with splashes of natural light and romantic ivy, while sprawling floral arrangements from Nicolette Owen in shades of green and white were the the perfect accent. To help bring our vision to life, we constructed two large panels upholstered in a lavender graphic pattern. We paired these with extra long fabric bunting in bright, playful colors that hung in varying lengths from the ceiling. The final addition of giant gold balloons and a vintage French settee made the space a feast for the eyes and set the stage for our fairytale elopement. The bride wore an Elizabeth Fillmore dress with a peplum ruffle from Gabriella New York, alternating accessories between a set of chunky crystal necklaces and a metallic gold turban. For her hair and makeup, we picked two of our favorite dramatic looks inspired by Biba. For the first look we added major volume to a simple ballet bun and matched it with a bright pink lip and dewy cheeks. For the second, we choose a more sultry look with teased-out hair and big smoky eyes. The groom wore a navy blue herringbone suit and light green shirt from Brooklyn Tailors, maker of some of our favorite custom suits!

In this fantasy, the bride and groom each get their own gorgeous cake — one with the classic Biba pattern and the other with whimsical black and pink ruffles, both from Elegantly Iced. Our friends at By Brooklyn worked with us to create a custom cocktail bar featuring some of the yummiest locally made syrups we’ve ever tasted! Flavors like ginger, lavender, and preserved lemon brought a fresh twist to some of our favorite spirits. For gift bags, we hand-painted canvas totes with gold acrylic paint in a bold fish scale design, filling them all with our favorite goodies from Paris (and a few from home, too!). Finally, Raya Brass Band joined us as we headed to Gantry Plaza, serenading the bride and groom as they looked out onto the beautiful New York City skyline. We were so lucky to work with Jana Williams Photography and Tree Of Life Films, who captured every beautiful moment and all the hard work from our lovely vendors. Their ability to tell a story in a fresh and unique way never fails to take our breath away!

As a special treat, we would love to share the amazing custom cocktail recipes that we developed with By Brooklyn for this magical shoot. Enjoy!

Metropolitan Building Marie Antoinette Inspired Photo Shoot by Judy Pak Photography

When a team of New York City’s finest vendors set out to inspire, they do so in a BIG way – it’s really the only way they know how. So when we set our sights on the gorgeous images of this Marie Antoinette photo shoot by Judy Pak Photography at the Metropolitan Building we stopped dead in our blogging tracks. Because it.is.gorgeous. Their interpretation of the “Modern Marie” was brought to life through the lavish styling of Michelle Edgemont and overflowing florals from Barbara’s Flowers making for a shoot that is decadent to say the least. There is SO much inspiration to be had we couldn’t possibly fit it in one post, so be sure to visit the full gallery for even more whimsical glamour!

From Judy of Judy Pak PhotographyIf there is any day that a girl should be free to live out her every decadent whim, it is on her wedding day. We New York City vendors endeavored to capture the playful, opulent, ultra-feminine spirit of Sofia Coppola’s film “Marie Antoinette” with an inspired wedding shoot for the modern bride. Sofia Coppola’s film so skillfully took a character who we all thought we knew as a detached aristocrat and portrayed her in a more relatable (though equally lavish) light. Likewise, for this inspiration shoot, we steered away from a stuffy aristocratic look and instead used glitter and pops of bold feminine colors together with accents of antique glamour to pull together a extravagant, Versailles-worthy affair for brides of today. The Metropolitan Building in Long Island City, New York, was the perfect setting for a wedding of this kind, filled with the kind of details you imagine Marie would have wanted in her own parlor: gilded molding, dramatic chandeliers, and antique books and furniture. In glittery, neutral-colored couture gowns by Samuelle Couture and Galit Levi with makeup and hair by JAC Beauty, we kept this Marie Antoinette bride and her friends’ looks contemporary with flowing hair, whimsical up-dos and brightly-colored nails. Big City Little Sweets made us all drool for their decadent, gold-dusted cupcakes, candy-colored macaroons and beautifully overflowing dessert table. Barbara’s Flowers made sure that the table spread and bouquets were designed to perfection: lavish and overflowing with a wealth of roses and greenery. Event designer Michelle Edgemont made sure that the shoot had no shortage of flirty feminine details with a lovely boudoir dresser covered in feathers, pops of color and glitter on the table, and unexpected modern details like an adorable triangle banner, glittery sneakers and confetti. Judy Pak Photography, with the help of second shooter Caroline Frost, captured every moment with playful, whimsical images that perfectly convey the sweet innocence and youthful extravagance of our “Modern Marie.”

From Ara Farnam of Rock Paper Scissors EventsGabi and Dan were looking for a sophisticated, soft feel for their wedding, and they wanted to work with a muted palette of creams, slate, gray-blue and soft green. The grays and greens were picked up beautifully by the succulents we used as accents throughout, and the flowers by Rebecca Shepherd were just spot on. We used fabric to transform the space in an easy and inexpensive way. We wrapped a sage green silk fabric around the brown leather benches in the interior space to bring them into our palette, and we used a soft cream fabric to mask the poles in the tent. Both helped to soften the existing elements in the Foundry and were subtle details that helped with the overall soft effect the couple was after. Dan, the groom, created a monogram logo for their invitations, which was carried through in their menus and programs to create a cohesive feel to the wedding with recurring images.

Let’s keep this pretty party going, shall we? This video by Kiss the Bride Films is a must see…

From Liesl of Photo PinkThe lovely Kristin and Peter were married April 10, 2010, at The Foundry in Long Island City, New York. Their wedding theme was “Vintage New York City.” The Foundry was beautifully decorated with white and pastel pink flowers, candles, and vintage-style string lights. The bride wore a custom-made Jason Wu dress with vintage-style hair (she looked like Lana Turner!) They had an awesome surf and turf grill cocktail hour, and their cake was incredible with huge feathers that swayed in the breeze. Instead of a guestbook, the couple had vintage postcards that were to be filled out with well-wishes by the guests and placed into a vintage suitcase.

Metropolitan Building Wedding by DM Events + Ryan Jensen Photography

Apparently the Golden State isn’t the only place to have a succulent infused affair; one ripe with laid back elegance and more unique details than we could ever possibly rifle off in one little post. Nope, New York is bringing the casual cool wedding to a whole new level of city chic today. With the help of DM Events, the Metropolitan Building was transformed into a sea of mismatched farm tables, beautiful birch menu cards by Paperfinger and maybe our favorite detail of all, a lovely little macaron bar. See every last bit of pretty straight from the camera of Ryan Jensen Photography in the full gallery.

From Melina of DM EventsWhen you have a bride who loves succulents as much as hydrangeas and burlap as much as silk, the first design hurdle is to find a space as eccentric, stylish, and unique as the duo saying “I do.” When we first brought Amanda and Mike to the Metropolitan Building, it was a perfect pairing! Every nook and cranny of this amazing warehouse is filled with antiques and memorabilia of a glamorous age gone by. The next challenge was to create a wedding so beautiful it could outshine this one-of-a-kind locale. The floor plan is vast and open, so we opted for both square and rectangular tables to give the eye variety as guests entered the room. The long tables were mismatched barn tables paired with a linen runner in a natural hue and square tables were covered in matching linen. Amanda did not want a lot of flowers so we used a combination of florals and casual objects in the centerpieces including lanterns, wooden boxes of lush green hydrangeas and succulents, buds vases of white flowers on wooden slabs, and tons of romantic candlelight.

The table décor was all about subtle details: The napkins we chose were actually kitchen towels, complemented by rattan chairs to incorporate natural elements.  Bryn, the amazing gal behind Paperfinger, created menu cards printed on birch! The table numbers we selected were glass bottles affixed with metal numbers, which could double as bud vases for the centerpieces. One of our favorite (and tastiest!) design elements was the dessert bar. We teamed with the fabulous Emily of Lael Cake who whipped up three gluten-free confectionery creations, including a large apple spice cake with caramel icing and two smaller, complementary vanilla bean cakes with lavender/rosemary icing.  Can we just say … yum!!!  Around the three cakes, we used antique trays and cake stands to display a variety of macarons. Our goal was to create an atmosphere where the bride and groom would feel as if they were celebrating in their own private vintage mansion for the night.

Metropolitan Building Wedding by CLY Creation

It took about five seconds for me to fall MADLY in love with this Metropolitan Building affair captured by CLY Creation.  Actually, make that one second, because these stunning images had me at hello… and then I read the gorgeous bride’s darling description of the day and, well, I was done for.  Because, not only did these two sweethearts theme their wedding “11:11 Make A Wish” and celebrate with a New Year’s Eve-esque countdown at 11:11 pm (LOVE), but they also incorporated a plethora of special touches and fabulous details that were so perfectly them.  Trust me, it just doesn’t get any better than this.  Click here for more, more, more!

From the Bride… Our theme was “11:11 Make A Wish.” We wanted our wedding to feel like our guests arrived in an enchanted space. The Metropolitan Building was the perfect space to make this happen. The ceremony on the second floor was our “Secret Garden” and going upstairs for the reception on the fourth floor, we transformed it into a “Backyard Party.”

Our guests picked up their namecards, which were hotel key cards, that brought them to their next destination. Guests went to their tables, which were numbered with the name of a city we want to travel to. The major decoration was the string lights with lanterns along the ceiling, which gave the place a magical glow. We also had a wishing tree and dream fountain for our guests to make wishes throughout the night. They even walked out of the wedding with something glowing — our wedding favor was a mason jar with a “firefly” inside (really a fairy berry LED light).

Our guests loved our photobooth on a park bench (we got engaged on a park bench) with fun props to pose with. We were excited for our first dance, which we performed to a song called “Into Eternity” by Jens Lekman. We danced the night away and even had an 11:11 countdown, which a friend suggested that made it feel like New Year’s!

New York Wedding by Jen Huang Photography

Any wedding held at the Foundry in New York is a gorgeous wedding in our book. It’s one of those venues that marries the girly beauty of a pretty wedding with the industrial beauty of the space and the result is always a little bit of magic. So when you add a crazy beautiful red haired bride, a dream boat of a groom and a whole slew of terrariums, well…you have SMP gold. Photographed to utter perfection by Jen Huang Photography , we’re completely smitten with this next little number. Click here to see the whole shebang.

From Jen Huang PhotographyAllison & Chris wanted a modern and romantic wedding, that played off the feel of fall. Poppies & Posies executed their vision beautifully with gorgeous fall inspired terrariums mixed with mushrooms, succulents and moss. Their wedding was held at the Foundry in Long Island City NY, an industrial setting juxtaposed against green ivy growing on the walls, with a view of the Queensboro Bridge off Manhattan. Allison & Chris were laid back and wanted their wedding to reflect an intimate style and subtle beauty. The large string lights set the mood for a fun dance party separate from the tented reception. The whole night glowed brightly despite the rain drops!

From the Bride…It was important to us to find a space that was raw enough to make our own, yet also stand beautifully on its own. We found beautiful places with a locked wedding aesthetic, and loft spaces that gave us the freedom to create our own wedding, but the Foundry offered the best of both worlds. The space is meticulously preserved, the staff always accommodating our sudden desire to show up, and we loved the way the light came through the skylight and large glass doors at the rear.

After our initial choice in the space choosing our caterer, flowers, photographer and DJ came from heavy research from numerous blogs trying to perfect our aesthetic. Their work and their attitudes about the work they did, heavily influenced our decisions to choose them. We really wanted something that reflected the time of year without being a fall themed wedding. We identified with the aesthetic that we saw in all our vendors, and thought in the end it really reflected our own personal taste.

In the end we were so happy to have worked with all these wonderful people and everything went so perfectly. We really couldn’t have asked for a better day.

Queens County Farm Museum Wedding by InfocusNYC Photography

This sweet, DIY wedding proves that just because you live in a huge city, amidst all the hustle and bustle, doesn’t mean you can find a quiet retreat just a short drive away for your big day. We’re loving the quaint, country feel and of course, that cute little sheep! How could you not? The bride is a designer so it was no surprise that she created many of the elements that gave her wedding such personality like the escort cards and cake topper. InfocusNYC Photography was there to capture all the details and there’s so much more in the full gallery.

From the Bride…After living in NYC for 4 years I finally met the man I was going to spend the rest of my life with.  We were engaged after a year and a few months of dating, but it took 2 and a half years of saving for that perfect day.  Saving, designing and preparing for the wedding took longer than expected but we couldn’t have done it any other way.  Myself being from Texas with the majority of my family still living there, I knew I wanted the day to feel like a piece of home.  Luckily, I found the perfect location 20 minutes outside of NYC at the Queens County Farm Museum.  They also recommended the perfect caterer that was able to work within our budget.  We also had a great photographer that was able to capture all of the great moments of the day. Being a designer and a natural do-it-yourselfer, I was able to keep the wedding cost down.  I designed our save the dates, invitations, and escort cards.  I even painted our cake topper.  After months of collecting antique aqua mason jars my parents found a florist in Queens to make the table arrangements, short notice nonetheless.  My now husband created the playlist for the ceremony and we had a friend recommend a DJ that made our reception unforgettable.  All of these things ended up being perfect for our day.

Metropolitan Building Wedding by Minnow Park Photography + Talida Bakes

From the moment I first laid eyes on the Metropolitan Building, I was hooked. The urban feel of the space, the cool vintage curiosities, the way it translates into a wedding venue… pure heaven. And with a DIY couple and a dream team of vendors on board including Documentary Photographer Minnow Park and Portrait Photographer Connie Wang, day-of-coordinator extraordinaire Talida Bakes and a slew of yummy treats courtesy by Nine Cakes, this wedding is sky-rocketing to the top of our favorites list. And talk about DIY queen, the lovely Bride made her very own dress. Yep, that gorgeous frock is 100% handmade by the Mrs. Ok, now I am officially impressed. See it all in one pretty spot!

From Talida BakesAs a close friend of the bride, I knew Cheryl and Joe’s wedding would be great. Cheryl is a “Jill of all trades”, as she can make anything and everything herself. Cheryl and Joe were married last September at the beautiful Metropolitan Building in Long Island City, where they created the most tailored and romantic setting for a wedding. There was hardly a thing in the room that wasn’t made by Cheryl, Joe, or one of their friends.

It was the ultimate DIY wedding since Cheryl sewed her own dress. Being in fashion, she had such a specific dress in mind that making it herself was really the only option. It took her 3 months, but she had the dress of her dreams. She also made the gorgeous necklace she adorned, as well as the jewelry worn by all the bridesmaids. And the bridesmaid dresses were bought from J.Crew, but Cheryl customized the dresses according to each girl’s style. Cheryl’s coworker tailored Joe’s suit for a perfect fit, and they recruited menswear line 3sixteen to design custom ties for the groomsmen.

Friends helped gather bottles over the months to contribute to the gathered look of the centerpieces. Cheryl purchased vintage wooden spools from eBay for the escort cards and spooled them with thread in their wedding colors. The favors, jars of button shaped chocolates, were lovingly made by Cheryl and friends. And on top of all this, Cheryl herself designed the entire suite of wedding stationery.

Not only did Cheryl and Joe have the eye for designing their entire wedding, but they had so many friends help pitch in to make the day happen as they dreamed. When asked what was the best part of the wedding, they said, “What made our wedding most meaningful was having so many people help out and share the day with us. We really couldn’t ask for better friends and family.

And set against the backdrop of the Metropolitan Building with it’s exposed brick and perfectly peeling walls, this styled shoot is fast becoming our favorite and is positively brimming with fabulous details for you to infuse into your own big day. From Jill La FleurAs soon as Matthew, the photographer, showed me images of the Metropolitan Building, inspiration for this shoot came rushing in. I fell in love with the location! The 9,00 square foot, 4 story building is filled to the brim with antiques, furniture and all sorts of collectibles that we were able to incorporate into the shoot. With huge wrap-around windows with beautiful city views, exposed brick walls with chipping paint & wood floors, we were able to create a unique, antique, ultra-romantic Victorian feel.

The colors for the table setting were ivory, creams and touches of light dusty blue/grey. I wanted the flowers to bring a pop of color to the table with shades of pink. The vibrant pink bouquet also played nicely off the lavender dress. For the escort card table, I had individual antique tea cups with a bloom in each one placed next to an antique door knob as the card holder. We also incorporated the antique door knobs next to the name tags on the table, along with ostrich feathers placed across the menus to add that bit of Victorian romance. The etched crystal with brass lids also added my favorite touch of Anthropologie to the table. For the linens, I layered a blue/grey natural linen with an antique ivory lace overlay, to give texture. I had a wonderful time visiting New York and being apart of such a wonderful shoot with such talented vendors. I can’t wait to plan a wedding at this amazing location!

We have a real treat for y’all this morning!  I’m doing my own little happy dance over this dreamilicious vintage-inspired photo shoot directed by Aisle Candy and photographed by one of our absolute favorite photo-extraordinaires KT Merry.  This is part ballerina, part fairy tale romance and all kinds of breathtaking.  I don’t think it could possibly get much better than inspiration featuring the latest line of wedding dresses from BHLDN, loads of details from Anthropologie and a team of some of our favorite New York vendors.  I want to pack my bags and live inside this shoot I love it so much!  What could make this little nugget of goodness even better, you ask?  How about a buying guide and DIY project from the Katie of Aisle Candy to go along with all this pretty!?  Head on over there this morning to get the low-down on all this loveliness.  But first waltz yourself over to the full gallery to see even more!

From Katie of Aisle CandyThe inspiration for our shoot was bridal fashion with a vintage New York flair. We shot at The Metropolitan Building in Long Island City which has got to be one of the coolest and most unique spaces I’ve even seen. It served as the perfect backdrop for our shoot, providing soft and warm hues to compliment our color palette of muted gold, neutral and blush tones. The shoot was all about vintage elegance and gorgeous imagery. The fashion styling was done by Dara of Preston & Olivia who brought together all the looks flawlessly with gowns from BHLDN and Marchesa.

The table scape was created by New York event stylist Ara Farnam of Rock Paper Scissors Events and featured vintage plates, glass and stemware all from Anthropologie, gorgeous floral arrangements by kat flower and sweet little placecards hand calligraphed in gold ink by Love, Jenna. Ara added texture and warmth to the eclectic mix of colorful tableware by pairing it with lace ribbon and soft flowing linens. We also had some adorable macarons made by Nine Cakes, which we ate at the end of the day – they were delicious!

The shoot was so much fun and I think everyone involved really enjoyed working together. It was truly an honor to collaborate with such amazing vendors! Everyone worked so hard on this shoot and it shows. The images are just breathtaking!

New York City Wedding at the Foundry

We are going to end the day with such a cool, awesome, perfect in every way wedding. Can you tell that we are a bit excited about this one? Well there is very good reason. This New York couple wanted to have a green city wedding where urban chic meets a natural garden wonderland. The Foundry played host to this wonderful affair and the venue couldn’t have been more spot on. The old ivy covered brick walls are such a beautiful contrast to the pale blues and greens of their color palette and all of the DETAILS are beyond. From the BBQ sauce table markers to the Tom’s shoes bridal party gifts, we are doing back flips for this baby. Wayne Yuan was there to capture all of the magic and that he did indeed.

{click here for more from this completely and totally fabulous wedding}

Originally my fiancé and I had wanted a destination outdoor wedding, but then decided to have our wedding in New York, which is where we met and now share an apartment together. We wanted a mix of a city wedding and the beautiful outdoors and found the perfect place to have our reception and ceremony at The Foundry, a restored industrial space in Long Island City. It had a beautiful blend of city with the factory feel and a view of the Queensboro Bridge and also the lush green courtyard. The weather that day was gorgeous and we were married in the ivy-lined courtyard surrounded by an intimate gathering of our closest friends and family, all while the two flower girls were blowing bubbles. We chose greens and blues as our color scheme, which was reflected in the different colored bridesmaid dresses and the paper pom-poms, which the bridal party decorated the bridal suite with earlier that morning. Our florist helped incorporate the outdoorsy feeling throughout our wedding by making the indoor area green and airy by lining the indoor railings with smilax and arranging the tables with succulents and vintage jars and vases filled with blue and green flowers.

To us, having an unforgettable menu at our wedding was extremely important. We had one of our favorite restaurants, Blue Smoke, caterer our wedding with BBQ. During our cocktail hour guests snacked on sliders, deviled eggs, sausages and smoked lamb while taking photos with instant cameras. Guests sat down at long tables with burlap runners made by the bride’s mom, dishtowel napkins, place cards written out by the maid of honor and table numbers stuck to BBQ sauce bottles. Guests chose their dinner entrees from a menu designed by the groom’s best man, who also created the letterpress invitations. There’s nothing more fun than eating ribs and mac & cheese in fancy wedding clothes! The cake was a delicious combination of red velvet cake and nutella frosting and was topped with gumpaste succulents. Throughout the night, our dog had a great time walking in and out of the tables looking for any leftovers! After drinks and dancing, our guests finished the night with monogram-stamped takeaway boxes of bite-sized cupcakes, whoopee pies and cookies as favors.
