From the Bride… We had searched and searched for locations that were not only vineyards but they also needed a rustic chic outdoorsy feel. When we arrived at The Barns at Hamilton Station that’s exactly what we found. We loved it! Another great thing for us was it was only about an hour or so from the city which meant all of our guest could make it no problem. On top of all of that, the staff at the Barns are absolutely wonderful to work with. We couldn’t have found a better place for our wedding.

The whole day was my favorite, but two parts stood out. The first was me hiding in the farm house watching Ray get out of his truck looking all handsome in his kilt. I was so,so, SO excited that I was getting to marry my very best friend. The second was when Ray and I were standing outside of the dining area waiting to be introduced. We finally had a moment to ourselves to just be quietly together. He said some of the sweetest things to me in those 5 minuets before returning to the fabulous wedding whirlwind. Definitely my two favorite moments.

Favorite part about planning: This is a hard one! I am so, so grateful for my wonderful mother and our amazing wedding team. If it was not for them I probably would still be planning our wedding. I think my favorite part was dress shopping with my mom. She was a trooper! My sister lives in Illinois and all of my best friends are out of state. So she had to be like 6 people in one. I finally settled on the 4th dress I bought after months of searching (OMG that’s crazy to think I went through so many dresses!). I also really enjoyed the small things like wine tasting with my dad & step-mom and trying out different caters with Ray or even putting together our music for the dj. It’s fun to be able to spend time with loved ones while planning a huge life event.

Advice to couples planning: ASK FOR HELP. This is such a big day for the couple and I know every bride wants things to be perfect. I know for a fact that if I didn’t have my family and our wedding team I would have struggled through the planning. I went in with a plan to do a lot of things myself (flowers, cakes, take home gifts) and I am happy that I let other people take over those task for me. Working a demanding full-time job and having to find time to plan is next to impossible. I know I would have been such a wreck before the wedding if I was up all night doing flower arrangements or icing a wedding cake.

Montanta Mountain Destination Wedding

Living in a city can sometimes make a girl crave those wide open spaces. The mountains, the fresh air, and those rugged landscapes for as far as the eye can see. But lucky for me – and all you fellow city dwellers – we’re getting one such (virtual) escape via this Montana affair set at Moonlight Basin Resort. Snapped by the amazing Cluney Photo, it’s a gallery of natural beauty you don’t want to miss.

From the Bride… We wanted our wedding above all to be a celebration with all of the wonderful friends and family who traveled so far to be with us. And the wedding was nothing if not an expression of those with us. My bridesmaids made bouquets and set up escort cards, friends arranged our flowers and set up our places, Dan’s grandfather played jazz at our cocktail hour and his aunt made a wedding cake. My father gave me away, and the priest who baptized me flew out to perform our ceremony. And after a beautiful and touching ceremony, we danced the night away to the terrible pop music which is a favorite of both my husband and I.

Dan and I were astounded by the wonderful vendors of our wedding. Ladyfinger Letterpress created our invitation which became the symbol of our wedding. Avant Florists gave me the most beautiful bouquet I could imagine with absolutely no guidance. Elle’s Belles made the most beautiful dessert table we have ever seen (or tasted.) Cluney Photography humbled us with such beautiful photos. When planning a distance from across the country, I could not have hoped for most wonderful vendors.

From the Bride… Steven proposed in December of 2012. In the new year, I launched into wedding planning. I started by sending Steven an elaborate survey asking how involved he wanted to be (or not be) in every aspect of the wedding. The results looked something like this, “flowers-leave me out of it please!; music–I want to be involved every step of the way.” It helped keep the wedding stress between us to a very bare minimum and it is a strategy I would recommend it to any bride. Don’t expect your beau to have a new found love of hairdos, invitations, or bridesmaid’s dress swatches.

After getting all of our expectations out in the open, Steven and I started thinking about location. We considered mountainous locations such as Vail, Los Olivos, and Shenandoah NP but ultimately decided on Bozeman within a few weeks. A friend and Bozeman resident recommended Springhill Pavilion, a historic dance hall nestled at the base of Ross Creek and peppered with apple orchards (bear-nip). The venue dates back to 1907 and has a rich history of Saturday night dance parties; pioneers used to come from miles away on horseback, by buggy, and on draft-horse-drawn sleds to attend weekly soirees. (Side note: Robert Redford has also danced at Springhill Pavilion during the filming of The Horse Whisperer). We thought of our wedding as a moment in time when our lifelong community of family and friends would come together. A historic, community dance hall where so many others had celebrated the special people in their life, seemed ideal. When I called the owners I thought they might be the two nicest people on earth. They told me that they had one Saturday left and I said, “September 21st it is!”

With the venue booked, we charged on to find our other vendors. I spoke with several wedding planners in the area but ultimately decided to go with Marci Jones from Habitat events out of Missoula; she was bubbly, fun and was born in Vail–it was just meant to be! Hiring Marci was the best wedding-related decision that I made (besides deciding to marry Steven, of course). We use Habitat for florals as well. The next big vendor milestones were to choose a photographer, caterer, band and ceremony musician. We looked into about 10 different photographers but decided on Jeremiah and Rachel because we loved their work and got a great vibe from them on the phone–another amazing decision. Steven and I traveled out to Bozeman in March for engagement photos and so that we could meet some of the vendors that we had already hired or were still considering. We settled on a cake baker, a photo booth, a bluegrass band, a harpist, and a caterer who was willing to execute our dream dinner.

One of the biggest challenges was getting everyone to understand our vision for the farm-to-table meal with wine pairings. This was not customary practice for weddings; caterers were more used to the terms “sit down dinner” or “buffet”, neither of which we wanted for our special day. We didn’t want guests to have to choose between local Idaho trout, Montana beef tenderloin and local lamb–we wanted them to get to eat all three! And we wanted them to enjoy wine pairings to go with every course. It was a tall order but our caterer, Food for Thought, did an impeccable job. We were told by our guests that it was one of the best meals they had ever had. And did I mention that there was no kitchen at the venue?! We loved having locally-sourced ingredients as part of every dish down to the bagel bite hors d’oeuvres made especially for Steven. The wine pairings were a fun surprise for our guests; we announced our vision for dinner and the initial pairing as a couple (Honig Sauvignon Blanc). The next three wine pairings were announced by my bridesmaids (Whitehall Chardonnay, Sean Minor Carneros Pinot Noir, and Klinkerbrick Zinfandel). They got so into the descriptions it that it was like something straight out of the documentary film, Som. We had dump buckets on every table but they hardly got any use so I know our guests loved the wine.

We did not expect much dancing since we had a bluegrass band, however, it was probably the most wild dance party I have ever seen. I learned quickly that night that anyone can dance to bluegrass and everyone loves it! As if the party wasn’t perfect enough, the owner of the venue, Chum, alerted me mid-dance-party that he had a surprise for us. We walked outside and what was in the apple tree? A BLACK BEAR AND TWO CUBS!! Their performance was so perfect that you would think that we hired them from the circus to entertain us. Many of our guests got to see the bears making for an unforgettable experience (note: one should always use caution around a bear and her cubs.)

Every aspect of the evening was incredible from the planned bits to the unexpected surprises. I thoroughly enjoyed wedding planning and was thrilled to have the freedom to carry out some of my dreams for our wedding. I also loved personally designing logos for our wedding, the menus, gift bags, cocktail napkins and cups and playing a large part in the design of our save the dates and invitations. However, there is no way I could have survived it without the help of so many people. Marci was incredible, poised, enthusiastic, and has great taste. I just loved being around her and got excited about our phone dates. She helped us immensely. Steven was very helpful when I needed him but we ultimately agreed that the wedding planning was my (and Marci’s) baby. Steven’s Mom & Sister were instrumental in assembling several of my DIY projects and my parent provided constant support by being great listeners and giving wise sage advice when things got stressful, and executing the 9 zillion tasks that need to be done the week before the wedding. My bridesmaid’s were also incredible. When my veil did not get signed for two days before the wedding, two of my bridesmaids went to a sorting facility and begged the shipping company to release my veil. They were in the back of the plant with the conveyor belts looking for a package from Hitched Bridal in DC. Also, none of Steven’s groomsmen knew how to tie bow ties so my brother tied.them.all. Weddings can be stressful, yes, but the number of people who come together to make your day run smoothly is a truly amazing phenomenon. A wedding is the best display of your community of family and friends and how they express their love and blessings for your future together. It is also a day when a bunch of people that don’t know you that well (vendors) rise to the occasion and make your day extremely special. For that reason, the wedding was one of the greatest days of our lives and we are so thankful to all of our guests, our vendors, and to each other!

Finally, there is one additional secret I haven’t told you about how our day ended up so perfect; it is kindof a wacky tale. So, we were told by my sister-in-law and her mom to hang a bottle of liquor in a tree to ensure that it would not rain. We were specifically instructed to hang the bottle according to the following guidelines: (a) at the ceremony location, (b) the tuesday NIGHT before the ceremony, (c) only females could be present, (d) we were to chant, “sister, sister go away; evil sister stay away; good sister come and stay” and (e) the chant was to be repeated three times with lots of feeling. I didn’t ask questions, I just knew that I did not want rain and that based on my sample size of two, it was going to work. When the Tuesday before rolled around I organized the forces: my mom and best friend who had flown in from London minutes before. It was dark, pouring, and we had previously been warned about bears. For this reason, my Mom was in a slight panic. I assured her it would be fine and we started on our mission. Alas, a beast was present. My opinion: it was one of the owner’s Bernese mountain dogs. My moms: definitely a bear. With much trepidation and very soaked we persevered, beast or no beast. We did not have any string so we hung the bottle from the tree using dental floss! Given the high winds on the following Wednesday, I was certain the bottle would not be hanging from the tree on our wedding day but guess what? It was. And. It didn’t rain. So, never underestimate the powers of perseverance (and a little bit of weird wedding voodoo).

From Marianne Wiest Photography… We loved dreaming up this styled spring shoot with Marianne Wiest Photography full of romance and rustic vintage details. We picked an old restored barn with huge fields full of gorgeous mountain views. Our adorable couple got married a month prior to the shoot and their love was so obvious in these photos. The bride wore a simple, a-line strapless Alfred Angelo gown and the precious flower girl donned a simple white sundress with peach tie and a green and white floral crown.

We set a vintage dressing table for the desserts overflowing with delicious local huckleberry pies, tarts, and naked cakes from Sweet Notions. We kept the color palate fresh in peaches, pinks and bright spring greens paired with vintage china place settings and white hobnail compotes overflowing with floral. Vintage Whites Weddings provided us with linen couches, green velvet chairs, white vintage trunks, and lace runners. The ever talented Thorn + Sparrow custom designed craft paper invitations, place cards, and menu cards in hand painted watercolor florals.

It was such a joy to work with Marianne Wiest and Ten Arrows Ranch, the perfect Montana wedding venue. We shot late into the golden evening light, soaking up every ounce of the spring sunshine.

Montana Bridal Shoot Inspiration

If you want to get lost in some serious lovely today, you’ve come to the right place. Because this heaping dose of inspiration captured by Orange Photographie is just beyond. Not only is it image after image of pure gorgeous, but there is also a headboard made of flowers involved from Beargrass Gardens Floral & Events – making this shoot so next level. See it all here.

From Orange PhotographieFrom Beargrass Gardens Floral & Events: Wedding days come and go, and I often hear brides say they wish they would have stopped, even for just a moment, and taken some time on their special day to reflect and relax. This shoot was inspired by that thought exactly: for each and every bride to take a period of time to stop, breathe, and be ready for what is a very big and monumental day. To reflect alone with nothing but one’s thoughts can be very peaceful and even heavenly. With that reflection comes beauty, and every bride wants nothing more that to be her most beautiful on her wedding day!

My hope for this photo shoot is to inspire future brides to take some time, even with their photographer, and relax, breathe, and have a moment or two of silence. Again, nothing is lovelier than a calm and tranquil bride ready to take in the day! And can you imagine waking up to a headboard completely made of flowers? Simply heavenly!

Winter Wedding Inspiration in Lakeside, Montana

This is an inspiration shoot that marries Winter and Spring for a beautiful take on the March wedding. With design and styling by Goldfinch Events & Design, blooms and floral crowns galore by Mum’s Flowers and imagery by Hope Kauffman Photography, this shoot is out to prove that snow and Spring touches are a mighty fine combo. See even more right here.

I have always loved the old saying, “If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb.” By this time in northern Montana, we are growing weary of winter storms and are grasping for any hope of Spring. Because winter lasts SO LONG up here in the freezing North I wanted to do a shoot that was inspired by winter textures {fur and ice} but with hints of spring {lamb’s wool and pretty pastel blooms}. I feel like this shoot really optimizes that transfer from Winter to Spring that our Northern states always feel in March (and it just happened to be a full on blizzard the day we shot).

We did a series of 3 different head pieces, each one reflecting a different stage of March. The first, all dark ferns and burgundy color pallet. The second, we paired with a winter table setting with hints of emerald and gold. The third, a bright tropical piece with gloriosa orchids and protea.

It was such a pleasure working with Hope Kauffman of Hope Kauffman Photography. Her eye for high fashion and all the little details brought extra life to this shoot. I am so proud of our model (photographer Tyler Brown) who braved the blizzard and freezing temps for the shoot!

From the Bride….I had known for quite a few years that I’m completely obsessed with weddings. I love fashion, styling, space layout, floral design, being organized and planning our wedding seemed to come very naturally. When the day came and Tom proposed, I was so excited to start executing the details that had been dancing around in my head!

I traveled to Seattle for a dress-shopping trip with my sister, mom, and soon-to-be sister-in-law. I absolutely fell in love with my dress and it set the tone for the rest of the wedding. The dress had a vintage feel, while still being chic. It was intricate while still being simple. I wanted the wedding style to be tasteful and simple, while still lush and bountiful, like the dress.

I collected glass containers from thrift stores and made vintage pedestal bowls that would serve as the centerpieces. We kept it simple and used mostly greens like eucalyptus, buplereum, and hypericum berries mixed with fresh fruits like grapes and plums. I made paper cones for rice tossing out of pages from The Great Gatsby. My sister’s fiance built us an alter using wood from my father’s property in Montana, and surprised us with a small metal plaque on the back that said our names and wedding date. The hand-made touches made it special, and reflected us.

My dad strung hundreds of bistro lights above the dinner tables and dance floor and it was my absolute favorite piece of décor. It added such a nice glow and created the most wonderful ambiance to dance the night away in! Such a simple piece of the décor that added so much!

The morning of the wedding was a dream. The girls had a morning yoga and swim session on the dock while the boys played Frisbee in their swimsuits at Tommy’s parents cabin. My sister was so attentive to me the entire day, and made me feel at ease. She always knew what to say to calm me and make me laugh. My grandmother brought a very special bracelet of hers for me to wear with blue sapphires, diamonds, and silver filigree. She and my grandfather have been married for 60 years and it was so special having it around my wrist on our wedding day.

I’ll never forget the walk down the stone steps towards Tommy. It was so intense and emotional. After our vows, we scurried away for photos and returned back to the reception via boat! It will be one of my most cherished memories riding the boat with my new husband, best friends, and new family members surrounding us.

Our family style dinner was casual and even with 180 people, the dinner felt close and intimate because we positioned the tables close together. Surrounded by all of the love of our friends and family, filled with the words of our siblings and their wonderful speeches. We were so emotional as they presented us with such beautiful words and quotes.

We danced our first dance to Ellie Goulding, “You’re Song” and were joined shortly after by our friends and family on the dance floor for the ultimate dance party under the lights and stars! Tommy made it a point to grab me close and kiss me constantly. We were hand-in-hand almost the entire night, which I loved! As the night came to a close, we hopped on Tommy’s scooter and jetted up off into the distance! We were overwhelmed with joy and in awe of an evening that was pure love.

From the stunning bride… Jason and I first met on the sidewalks of Whitefish in 2006, during the Whitefish Winter Carnival. After that time, I slowly got to know Jason through mutual friends and get- togethers. During the summer of 2008, when what we thought we had was nothing more than an innocent friendship, something between us began to grow and we knew we would never want to let go. Before we knew it, Jason and I were spending more and more time together, just the two of us sharing laughs and going out on little adventures. Somehow we found through our friendship that we both have the same drive for the outdoors and love for trying new things, even though Jason was way better than me at most new things we tried. He somehow pushed me to levels that I would never have gotten to on my own. This is why I love him and why I realized at the end of that summer in 2008 that I didn’t want to spend another day without him.

Two years into our relationship, everything came crashing down on us. On April 10th in 2010, driving home, we hit black ice and our vehicle rolled twice, ejecting me from the vehicle. You always hear about these stories or see them on the news but never do you believe that one day it will happen to you. The sound of the alert helicopter was so pronounced that night and I knew it was coming to get me. I knew this because I could not move my legs. I knew something bad had happened but tried to stay calm in the situation. Sure enough, I was flown to Harbor View Medical Center after a quick stop at Kalispell Regional Medical Center. It was in Seattle where I was diagnosed T12 Paraplegic. I would never walk again. Since the accident I have continued rehab and upper body strengthening. Despite being paralyzed, I continue to do almost all of the same activities that I did prior to the accident with the support of Jason, my family and friends.

Just a couple weeks following the two year anniversary of our accident, on April 24, 2012, I came home after work to find my perfect diamond waiting for me. Well, not quite like that! We went out back on our porch to eat dinner and when Jason told me that the resident fox was in the field, of course I turned to looked, right? When I didn’t see it, I turned back around to find my diamond ring sitting on the table. It was then that Jason asked the big question, and without a doubt, I said YES!

Oh, the wedding! So you would think I would be ecstatic, right? Well, I was excited to be marrying Jason, but about the actual wedding, I had mixed emotions. This is the kind of thing I think every girl dreams about from the time that she is a little girl. I know I did. I had a vision of what my wedding was going to be like and I will tell you, it did not include a wheelchair. If you think there weren’t tears during the planning process, well you can think again. I didn’t know if I should just go to the courthouse or maybe have a destination wedding. I knew I didn’t want to “roll” down the aisle. One day, my mom showed me a video on YouTube of a girl who walked down the aisle with her leg braces on; braces which I own, too. It appeared that she walked with what looked like her father and a sibling. I thought to myself, I can do that. So, I decided and I set my mind to it that that was what I was going to do. I would walk down the aisle with my father and my brother. Now, practice, practice, practice!! The thing was, I could walk great with my walker and braces, but I have to watch my feet because I cannot feel them touch the ground. At my wedding, I would be in a dress and maybe only be able to see the tips of my shoes. Also, I would be replacing my walker with the arms of my father and my brother. Everything was a learning process to us all but eventually we would figure it out. And so, the planning began. I knew I was going to walk down an aisle, stand through my vows and once we said “I do”, Jason would carry me out. Since we had a plan, we set a date. July 13, 2013, we would get married.

We decided to book our wedding and reception at Diamond B Weddings in Kalispell, MT. Our theme for the event would follow in the direction of vintage/shabby chic with a splash of rustic. Having our ceremony at Diamond B, we could all gather down by the shore of Flathead River and enjoy the view of the mountain range in the back drop. I also chose to arrange the seating in a semi-circle to create a shorter aisle for me to walk down and to allow a better visual of the ceremony and beautiful arch hand made by our good friend Jon. When the time came, and it did, I walked arm in arm with my father and oldest brother, John. In my eyes, it seemed flawless. If you can only imagine, there were just a few tears and I even got a standing ovation for my efforts. Jason and I stood face to face through our vows and once we were announced husband and wife, with some help from our wedding party, Jason swept me into his arms and carried me down the aisle.

We were honored to have Jason’s brother-in-law, Joe Kola as his best man and Chance Buckallew as his groomsman. Also, I had my sister, Sarah, as my Maid of Honor and Hilary Shepard as my bridesmaid. We had all four of our nephews for ring bearers, Jack, Caden, Michael and JW. Our flower girl was my niece, Maura.

Following the ceremony, everyone would gather up at the red barn for wonderful food and appetizers served by Johns Angels Catering and cocktails by Scotty’s Bar. While we let everyone get comfortable with their favorite drink and a bite to eat, we took advantage of the setting sun and got a few more amazing photos by Shannon and Jeremy with Shannon Hollman Photography. Once the photos wrapped up, everyone gathered in the barn and we shared some laughs and memories with a slideshow. The last song during the slideshow, we got up and did the best of what we could and had our first dance. We like to call it “an eighth grade sway”. It seemed to fit.

After we cut into our gorgeous cake from the IGA in Bigfork, it was time to get the party started. Chance broke out the limbo bar made from the glow sticks at the reception and got the DJ from Mobile Beat to start playing her top hits and that was all it took. The party took off from there. If you can imagine, Jason and I went side by side under the limbo, wheelchair and all. I’m pretty certain that I even got a few jitter bug dances in as well. One thing I miss for sure is dancing, but I made up for it at my wedding. I never thought that I would ever dance so much in my wheelchair. We kept that place rocking until one o’clock and continued back at our place gathered around a bonfire with a group of our close friends until the early morning. It was absolutely a night that I will never forget.

I never thought that I would feel so calm and stress free on my wedding day. I feel a huge part of that credit goes to Michelle and the crew at Soucie and Soucie for doing my hair and makeup so perfectly. All I really had to do that day was put on my dress. And walk down the aisle of course! A huge thanks to Don Bestwick and the crew at Northern Physical Therapy because they helped make my walk possible. Of course, thank you to my dad and my brother, John, for helping make that walk possible, too. I also could never thank my mother enough. This wedding would have never happened without her and my sister, Sarah. With their help, all of the signs, so much shopping, and any idea I had, they helped make it happen. My sister-in-law Elena, thanks too, for all that she did before and during the wedding. She was literally there for anything that I needed on my wedding day. Any many thanks to so many friends and family, including my brother Matt and Jason’s sister, Tracy, and parents, and grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and more, that helped make it all happen and for being there to support us on such a momentous day in our lives! Thank you to Eileen at Diamond B Weddings; she is one of the hardest working women I know, and the Party Store for all of my tables, chairs, linens and more. Thanks to Jacqueline at J Scott Couture Bridal in Bigfork; she was so patient with me as we got my dress to fit so perfectly, and trust me, it wasn’t an easy process. John’s Angels Catering and Scotty’s did a great job serving food and drinks to our 250 guests. Mobile Beat kept us dancing all night. Thank you! I can never say enough about how beautiful the flowers were from Mum’s Flowers in Whitefish, and I certainly had plenty of them to enjoy. I felt like the flowers were the finishing touch on the rest of the decor. They truly were stunning! Last but not least, my photos. Ahh my photos! Maybe this truly does become the only memory you have left of your wedding, but one thing is for sure, I chose a photographer that truly was amazing, not only at capturing these memories, but to work with as well. Thank you so much, Shannon and Jeremie with Shannon Hollman Photography.

From the handsome groom… Annie is unquestionably the strongest woman I know. She has taken such a painful loss of being able to use her legs and turned it into such powerful accomplishments. I am so blessed to be with a woman, that no matter what we do, people come up to her and say what an inspiration she is. It is an amazing sight to be on the ski slope with her, and everywhere I look all of the attention is focused on her. When people are either yelling from the chair lifts ‘you go girl!’ or skiing by her saying ‘never give up!’, she brings out the best in everyone. So, I guess one of the many things I love about Annie is her amazing amount of will power.

From Janie OsborneThere was never any doubt for Frances and Todd that they would get married in Montana. Sheep Rock Ranch is Frances’ family’s property and Frances and Todd wanted to share the beauty of the place, not to mention all of the outdoor activities available, with their family and friends.

Frances’ and Todd’s wedding theme was in keeping with the overall Montana surroundings: Tables were decorated with felled birch trees, mushrooms, an assortment of ferns, succulents, pine cones, and lotus pods. The tent poles were designed to look like trees.

A ten-member gospel choir sang Edwin Hawkins’ “Oh Happy Day,” as the bride processed out of the front door and down the front lawn of her family’s second home.

In keeping with the bride’s family’s southern roots, the menu was strictly southern and included Bourbon Glazed Chicken, Corn Pudding, Okra and Tomatoes over Rice, Black Eyed Peas and Greens. The late night menu consisted of Cheeseburgers, cookies and milk! The fondant, hand-painted cake was inspired by Montana’s aspen trees and featured the couple’s carved initials.

Music for the wedding was provided by Simply Irresistible, an eleven piece show band out of Atlanta, Georgia. The couple’s first dance was to Doris Troy’s song, “Just One Look.”

Whimisical Wedding at Chico Hot Springs, Montana

When a wedding planner gets to plan her big day, we always make sure to stop and take note. Because we just know that big things are going to unfold – and that’s just what happened for this beauty of a Bride (who also happens to be the talent behind Lovely Day Events) when she said I do to her dapper hubby. Their day was filled with color, fun and love – making all the images from Katy Gray so wonderful you can’t help but smile. See even more here.

From the Bride…I have the best job in the world, I am a wedding planner. This job is as fun and and rewarding as you are imagining right now, and so much more. For the past few years my job was a bit awkward, because I had been with Eric for almost ten years and people were always asking “You are a wedding planner, so when are you getting married?” Well, finally it was the right time for us to get married and we started planning. Picking the location was the easy part, it would be at Chico Hot Springs in Pray MT (about 45 minutes from Bozeman, MT). Even though we live in Jackson Hole, WY and love it dearly, I did not want to feel like I was at work. Plus, we have been vacationing at Chico Hot Springs for the past few years and are absolutely in love with it. It had everything we wanted in a location and more: lodging on site, mountains, activities such as horseback riding and rafting, greenhouses to serve meals from, a late curfew for the reception, a saloon for the after party, the list goes on. Sigh… this place is simply magical.

We wanted our wedding to be a vacation and memorable wedding weekend for our guests. We did not have wedding colors, instead we chose a theme: festive, fun and celebration. The next step was to spend my free time over the winter on Etsy. Festive was brought out in the pops of color. Banners were custom made on Etsy, bold table runners ordered from Etsy and (after a DIY project gone horribly wrong) I found limited edition reproductions of the adorable vintage blue Ball mason jars at a local store. The festive banner theme was carried through the paper suite, cake topper and custom At Last banner for the ceremony. Fun could be found in personal touches. For example, instead of table numbers, each table was named after a place in our life together complete with photos from that location, such as college, Europe and Jackson Hole. My personal favorite fun touch was the mismatched white bridesmaids dresses and bright shoes each gal wore. My dress had to be made for fun. My criteria for the dress was able to dance in it, able to sit in it and able to have fun in it. I found this lovely Sue Wong beaded dress in a boutique in California and am hoping I get invited to a Great Gatsby party so I can wear it again. Nothing says celebration like cigars, Eric is the manager of the local cigar store so many touches included getting creative with cigar boxes for decor and cigars during the cocktail hour. Other celebration details such as “I’m Yours” and “You’re Mine” cake toppers, “I do” and “Me Too” forks with matching cake server were found on Etsy.

When I look back on my wedding day I think of all the fun, the celebration and a very festive day. From the Etsy finds, to farm to table food, to the pops of color it was a wedding filled with ten years of our style and well work waiting for.

From the Bride…Kyle and I met on April 6, 2006 on a New York City sidewalk outside of a recording studio. We rode the elevator up together exchanging nervous glances and barely saying a word. I knew the moment I saw him that I loved him. I was only sixteen at the time, Kyle only eighteen, but it felt like I had known him all my life. Once we made it up to the studio that day, Kyle sang a song of his that he had written called “Girl I’d Sing For”. With his blonde hair, blue eyes and guitar, I melted.

After our chance meeting that day, I feared I would never see him again. He grew up in Montana and was a freshman in college at the time in California, and I had just graduated from high school, still living at home in Connecticut. However, a few days later I received an email from him, and I knew then and there that it was the start of something extraordinary. We talked every single day from then on. It started with emailing, then constant texting, and quickly turned into talking on the phone for hours each day. It wasn’t long before Kyle moved to NYC and asked me to be his girlfriend.

We met through music. It has been each of our passions our entire lives and the true foundation our relationship has been built upon. When we met at that recording studio we were both working on solo projects, however, we decided it made way more sense to become a duo and pursue our career in music together. After a year of dating, and eating our way through NYC, Kyle decided he wanted to move back to California so he could finish college. I had always wanted to move to the West Coast, and with lots of persuading, my parents allowed me to go. So while Kyle finished school, we pursued our music together and I continued my career as an actress. I have acted all my life and starred alongside Denis Leary on the Emmy nominated FX television series “Rescue Me” for seven years.

It was exactly a month past our six-year anniversary that Kyle asked me to be his wife. It was one of the top three best days of my life so far. The other two being the day I met him and now our wedding day.

We weren’t really one of those couples that talked about our wedding day at all. It was more of an unspoken thing. We knew it was something we both wanted, but never spoke about. Our engagement was a total shock and surprise (I would’ve thought it would be another couple of years before he asked) and Kyle picked out the ring completely on his own without us ever talking about it. We decided very quickly that we would get married in Montana where Kyle grew up. Planning our wedding proved to be the most exciting yet stressful fourteen months of our entire lives. Especially since we were planning it all from California and made a big move to Nashville just five months before our wedding day. Thankfully, we had a TON of help from our family, most of all our amazing mothers. We are blessed to have extremely close families. Our moms are literally best friends and our dads are basically the same person. They even have the same name! Kyle’s sister served as maid of honor, his brother as Best Man, my brother as a groomsmen, and Kyle’s and we were finishing up dinner at Natalie’s family’s house cousin as our Officiant. Kyle’s mom was on the ground in Montana, helping with all of the day-to-day things, and was the one who found our amazing venue. We opted to go without a wedding planner and plan everything ourselves, so our moms and I were on the phone every day discussing anything and everything having to do with our wedding. We really wanted a romantic, rustic, vintage, barn feel, using the natural beauty of Montana as our backdrop. Also with an underlining arrow theme, which was very apparent in our paper goods, since our last name is Archer. Our venue had all of those things, and we fell in love with it as soon as we pulled up.

Next, was finding our amazing photographers, florist, caterer, and the rest of our vendors. Things came together really quickly and really perfectly, and we had the best team of professionals working with us to make our wedding a dream come true. Something we knew we needed to have were the gorgeous barn wood tables that our rental company carried. To me they just screamed Montana wedding and set the scene for our outdoor dinner perfectly. At each guests seat, we had a fun mad lib on brown Kraft paper tucked into an ivory napkin with a barn wood pencil. I was lucky to have one of my incredibly talented best friends create all of our paper goods, and my mom collected hundreds of barn wood pencils over the year to place with the mad libs at dinner. We also had antique cut wine glasses and some vintage couches and furniture to tie in the vintage theme we wanted. When it came to flowers, we wanted everything to look very loose, with scattered succulents and pops of green, ivory and pink. Our florist did the most incredible job of capturing exactly what we wanted, and I am obsessed with how our flowers turned out! At the bar we had fun ivory cocktail napkins with a Walt Whitman quote written on them in gold foil. They read, “The strongest and sweetest songs yet remain to be sung.” On our first valentines day together, Kyle gave me a ring with this quote engraved in it. Saying those words was also how I ended my vows to Kyle, so needless to say this quote is very special to us. For food, we really wanted a very simple, summery meal, nothing too heavy. All of our food was organic and locally sourced, and complemented our Montana summer wedding perfectly. At dessert, we chose to do a small bride and groom cake, and then had lots of fun finger treats for guests so they could have a little bit of everything. We also had an ice cream truck!

Since music is such a huge part of our lives, we wanted to make that a theme throughout the wedding as well. When deciding what music I would walk down the aisle to, I knew that all I wanted to hear was Kyle’s voice. So Kyle recorded the song he wrote and proposed to me with and the DJ played it as my father walked me down the aisle. It was perfect. We also wrote our own vows, which made our ceremony feel so special and personal. It was so cool to hear what each of us had written and how similar certain parts were. By the end of the ceremony, my eyelashes were falling off from how hard I had been crying! When it came to our parent dances, we knew we wanted to do something extra special for them. They are our biggest fans and have supported us through everything, so we decided to surprise them with songs that we had written specifically for them. We each picked out our “pretend” dances with our parents and told them those would be the ones we’d dance to. My dad and I chose a song by Tim McGraw and Kyle and his mom chose one by Rascal Flats. I will never forget the look on my fathers face when our song came on and it was me singing the song that Kyle and I had written just for him. I’ve never seen him cry so hard in my life. When Kyle’s song that we had written for his mom came on, it was the best feeling knowing that we had pulled it off and surprised everyone. Those were truly the greatest gifts we could’ve possibly given our parents to say thank you for everything they have ever done for us.

After dinner we all head inside to the barn for dancing! The barn featured a sawdust floor, a giant tee-pee tent with a bar inside, picnic tables, string lights, and a dance floor surrounded by hay bails covered in Pendleton style blankets. One thing we really wanted to have during our reception was a photo booth for our guests. We were so lucky that our venue had the coolest one already set up inside the barn! It was an old porch backdrop, with old-fashioned costumes, props and all, which made for the coolest old time photos.

We truly could not have asked for a more perfect day to vow our love to each other and start our new life together. We were blessed with the most beautiful weather, and the most incredible family and friends surrounding us. It was our absolute dream come true!

From the Groom…After years of falling in love with Natalie, I knew that one day I would ask her to marry me. We had always talked about it like it was way off in the future, years away – she was not expecting me to pop the question, which was what convinced me that it was the perfect time. Keeping it a surprise was very important to me, so I was very careful to tell only a few people what I was planning. My sister, my brother, my parents and my best friend. It just so happened that my friend was planning to propose to his girlfriend and had been researching rings and diamonds –thankfully because I had no idea! So he took my sister and I to downtown Los Angeles where we looked at many different styles, cuts and colors and with my sister’s help we found the perfect ring for Natalie.

The timing of where and when to ask the question was the next big thing. It just so happened that Natalie and I were planning a trip to visit her family in New York at the end of June (about a month away), so I decided that’s when I’d do it. I knew that it’d mean so much to ask Natalie at her family’s house, with all of them around to celebrate with us. So then came the question of how to ask her. Natalie and I are songwriters, we met through music and it’s something that we’ve pursued together throughout our entire relationship. It just felt right for me to write her a song, so I started working on something that would tell our story and show her how much she means to me. It took me a few weeks of tweaking and finally I had it ready.

About a week before our trip, I was driving to pick up the ring and finally got the courage to make a phone call to her father. That was one of the most nerve-racking phone calls of my life! As soon as he picked up everything kind of hit me, and I just started crying. He said “Kyle, take a breath”…so I pulled off the road, gathered myself and asked him for his blessing. He said “of course” and was very excited when I let him know my plan to ask her at their house. I asked him if he would like me to call Joann (Nat’s mom), but he thought it would be so exciting for us to keep it a secret, so that’s what we did.

It was Friday, June 22nd in Connecticut when her father asked us to play some new songs. I ran upstairs, grabbed the acoustic guitar, tucked the lyrics to Natalie’s song in my front pocket, and the ring in my back pocket. After we played a few favorites for her family, I pulled out the worn and torn lyric sheet from my pocket and told Natalie I had finished a song we’d been working on. As I started to play, the words really hit me and I could barely finish the first verse…as I went on, I looked up at her family and they were crying – but everyone (except Jimmy, Nat’s dad) thought it was just a sweet song and how cute that I was singing it for them. As I came towards the last third of the song, I stood up, put the guitar on the couch and got down on my knee in front of her and her family. I squeaked out “Natalie I want to make music with you for the rest of my life, will you marry me?”…the expression on her face was the best thing in the world! She immediately started balling and screaming “Are you serious?!!”… “YES!!”.

The surprise, excitement, and pure happiness is one of those few moments that will stay with us for as long as we live. With help from friends and family, I had pulled it off. I was now engaged to the most beautiful girl in the world! That night was a night we’ll never forget.

Sky Ridge Ranch Wedding

Montana weddings have this way of infusing the outdoors with elegance in the loveliest of fashions. But never have I seen a wedding combine raw beauty and romantic details quite like this. Think reclaimed antique doors and long rustic tables against the most stunning natural scenery you ever did see. Let’s pay a visit to the full gallery of Cluney Photo’s captures and don’t miss the film from Sure Shot Video to tie it all together.

From the Bride… Casey and I met in the summer of 2009 while traveling on a tour of Europe for college students and have been best friends and travel buddies ever since. As we planned our wedding, we knew we wanted to incorporate all the beautiful places we’ve traveled together since that was a big part of our story. We did long distance for awhile from Georgia and Montana so we thought we would add a little bit of the Northwest and the South to our wedding theme. We chose to get married at Sky Ridge Ranch in Ronan, MT with the beautiful Mission Mountains as the backdrop, where Casey is from. Our wedding had a lot of vintage and rustic chic decorations, with a backyard BBQ feel complete with a grill full of local Montana beef and a bonfire pit with a s’more making station.

When Casey proposed, he hung framed pictures of us on birch wood trees along a path depicting our whole timeline together. Our wedding venue had the exact same trees, so we were able to recreate the proposal by hanging some of the same photos used in the proposal for our guests to look at as they walked along a path that led them from the parking lot to the ceremony site.

After exiting the birch trees, guests walked through two antique doors connected to a large barn wood wall that Casey and his dad built out of scrap wood from one of the original barns on the Cable family ranch. The antique doors were the original doors on Casey’s grandmothers house. In addition to the entry door, we were able to make a lot of our other decorations which helped save on costs and gave our wedding the personal touch we were looking for. I painted all of the signs, windows, made name tags, and helped design the flower arrangements. Our dessert table was Georgia/Montana themed with a vanilla wedding cake with huckleberry filling, peach and huckleberry ice cream, with glass coke bottles on the table filled with fresh cotton. We also had lemon and raspberry macaroons for dessert to throw in a touch of Europe in the mix as well.

From the Bride… When we fell in love in Montana, we knew that Montana was the place we wanted to celebrate our marriage. We wanted something small and casual, so we decided on Great Northern Resort. We did our first look in a meadow and said our vows with the wonder of Glacier National Park. In typical Montana fashion, the sky gave way to a rainstorm. The rain, however did not do anything to dampen the spirit of the evening, and in fact made our reception dinner in a log-pole tent even cozier! The scene of the sun setting behind the mountains and passing clouds reflected the majesty of nature for which Big Sky Country is known.

Aside from focusing on Montana, we also wanted our reception to have a 1920’s feel. We spent weeks researching and perfecting old-style cocktail and RJ mixed up drinks for the entire party. Our caterer happened to collect antique cookbooks and served up a meal of hors d’oeuvres from the era. We spent the night enjoying wonderful food and drinks with our family.

The night turned out to be even more amazing than we ever could have imagined. We had intended to elope, but realized at the last minute that we wanted to celebrate with out loved ones as well. The night ended with us sharing one last drink by ourselves in the candlelit tent, enjoying our first moments as husband and wife in the cool, Montana summer night.

Bitterroot Valley Wedding from Paige Jones Photography

DIY’ing a wedding with 170+ guests is a ginormously brave undertaking and one that proves this Bride and Groom are so meant to be. Together they crafted their heart and souls into this Montana affair. It’s a classic tented wedding in the great outdoors with florals by White Antler Flowers and festivities wrapped in the true essence of easy elegance. Paige Jones photographed all the beauty and you can see even more from the day right here in the full gallery.

My husband, Fritz, and I met almost five years ago at a friend’s birthday dinner. Since then we’ve traveled around the world (proposed to me on a hilltop in Florence Italy!), moved from coast to coast, and both started our own companies – together – and planning our special day was no different. Although at 170+ people, we considered our wedding an intimate event. Our prerequisite is that we knew every guest at our wedding and that those people had been active parts of our lives together. I was in charge of all the aesthetics of the event, while Fritz handled a lot of the organizational work. We opted to not have a planner, calligrapher, or even an event designer so our guests felt as if they were walking into our homes and experienced the details that are unique to us as a couple.

It was somewhat of a DIY event. Fritz coming from a large family, we enlisted his four younger brothers, cousins, aunts, and our close friends to help with the video production, paper suite, flower arranging, hair, dress alterations, our best man and brother singing our first dance to our friend officiating the wedding. I did my own makeup, hand addressed each invite, and had a lot of things custom made on Etsy. Even my dress was a bit of a DIY project. I purchased an off-the-rack 2009 Jason Wu dress that was a little big and a little too much “floof” but I saw my dream dress in it – so I hired an amazing couturiere to reconstruct it into my dream dress. The transformation was really amazing and now I have a unique one-of-a-kind dress. Maybe I will die it to wear again?!

We chose Hamilton, Montana as it’s a city we discovered together, near where I grew up in Idaho. Living in New York, it’s a place we love to escape to the outdoors to satiate Fritz’s love for fly fishing, be one with the great outdoors, and get much needed r&r. I dream of moving there one day and I think after our wedding weekend, Hamilton has a lot of converts! Our guests probably expected a western affair in a barn, but we opted for the Daly Mansion as our venue as it was more our style with it’s Gatsby-like charm. While my vision for the event was “a rustic Gatsby affair” I didn’t tell the guests as I really wanted the event to look natural and modern, rather than costume-y. For the reception music we hired a 17 piece Big Band that played 1920’s jazz, and I am pretty sure it was one of mine and our guests favorite parts about the wedding. We ended the evening with two hours of Motown spinning on Vinyl. The dance floor was packed until we had to leave!

The single western element was a horseshoe that our officiant had blessed for us by the Dalai Lama. We passed to all of our guests to bless them as well. For our guestbook, we ordered a vintage map of the world and had our guests “pick your home and sign your name” as we basically had guests travel from every continent but Antarctica. It will be the start of our vintage map collection. I didn’t really have a color palette but I didn’t want my maids in black as I knew having a black tie event most of the guests would show in black. I wanted to make sure that the decor and color palette was in sync with the Daly and it’s natural surroundings. I am not one to have things too “decorated”.

We were pretty relaxed about the details. One example was our flowers. I had no idea what they were going to look like until I sat down to eat dinner. I used a cut farm called White Antler Farms and could only cut what was in season. I only paid for my bouquet and a few other small details to be done by the owner of the farm as she usually doesn’t do floral design, so I enlisted my husband’s talented aunt to arrange flowers for tables. They turned out beautifully and better than I dreamed of.

Our cocktails and food were all inspired by the 20’s and what could be sourced locally. The cake was a spin on Fritz’s favorite cake as a child – dirt cake.. you know the cake with oreo cookie crumbles and gummy worms? Our cake maker landed on a sophisticated spin and made a gluten free top tier for me and other GF guests. We also had sweet and savory pies with salted caramel ice cream delivered around 9:00 PM to fuel guests to keep them dancing until 11:00 PM. I was surprisingly zen on our wedding day. Zero nerves and felt overwhelmed with happiness. Some of my favorite intimate moments were the first look, seeing my bridal party all dressed up in their gorgeous dresses, especially those adorable mini maids, and the crazy wind that picked up during our ceremony and swept away my veil. It was all so romantic and magical and a happy day I will always remember.

The Resort at Paws Up, Montana Wedding Film from Moonstone Pictures

It’s no secret that a good wedding film gets the waterworks started over here. Cinematography gets me every single time. But this Montana wedding from Moonstone Pictures really got me. You know that half pout, half smile that happens when you see the sweetest thing ever? Yeah. That’s happening.

From the gorgeous bride… Chad and I both worked in Pittsburgh and I would often see him walking around the city during the lunch hour. I always thought that he was so handsome! One Friday evening at happy hour with my girlfriends, I saw him there. We ended up talking and exchanging business cards. I worked for attorneys at the time and Chad happen to be an attorney. We said that we could do “business together”. The following Monday, Chad had emailed me and asked me to lunch. I accepted his offer! While walking to lunch, I had told him that I was going to look at an apartment that evening on Mt. Washington. He said that he lived there. It just so happened, that I was looking at an apartment in his building and his roommate was the one that was showing me the place! I took the apartment and we spent everyday together since.

My favorite flower is a lily. Chad would often get them for me and said once I got 12 of them, that is when we would get engaged. I was stuck on 11 lilies for 5 years! One random January weekend we took a trip to a resort called Nemacolin. We would go there a few times a year, so I wasn’t really expecting anything to happen that weekend. On our way to dinner we ran into a couple that we knew and said that we would meet up with them afterwards. We hadn’t heard from them, so Chad recommended that we go to our room, freshen up and order desert until they call. When the desert arrived, there was a lily in a vase on the tray. I said, “Chad, look there is a lily, does that mean that we are going to get engaged?” I said it joking around. Nemacolin was a nice resort, I thought that there was a lily just because it was a nice touch for room service. He looked at me and said, “Actually, yes that is what it means.” I was totally shocked and felt so bad that I ruined the special proposal. At least we have a funny story to tell our friends!

We knew that we wanted to do a destination wedding and travel west every year on vacation. Chad loves to fly fish and the outdoors. Our families have never been out west, so we thought that our wedding would be the perfect opportunity for them to see why we love it so much. We had seen Paws Up on the travel channel and thought that it looked amazing! While visiting there, the wedding coordinator had so many great ideas! The food and service was beyond our expectations and we loved that each of our guests would have their own house to stay in, rather then all be in a lodge together.

I arrived to the ceremony in a horse drawn carriage. We had each of our guests drink a glass of Moet and hold a lily during the ceremony. Jay Straw played our ceremony music on acoustic guitar and played all Beatles songs. The Mayor of Missoula, John Engen, married us.

At the reception, we had a long elegant table set up on the Blackfoot River. We had a band, The Tom Cats, who were amazing and so much fun to dance to! We also had an old western style photo booth.

After the reception, we went to a different location on the resort and had the band come back and play acoustic around the fire. We had more food, a bourbon tasting and cigar bar set up and fireworks!

Our wedding day was actually the best day of our lives and we often say that we wish that we could do it again, because the day was so perfect. I have so many awesome memories from that day. I loved arriving at the ceremony site and seeing Chad standing there with our all of our family friends supporting us. It meant so much to both us, that our family and friends traveled so far to be with us that on that day. It was totally worth the wait!

Maggie McGuane and Chad  Franscoviak were married in Paradise Valley in Livingston, Montana a couple of days after Thanksgiving. After the Cold Hard Cash, a Johnny Cash Tribute band, played a set, Katy Perry, John Mayer and his band played another set, and then John was the DJ for the next few hours. Maggie, a mother and writer, and Chad, a sound engineer and music producer, met at a local bar during the famous 4th of July celebrations in Livingston. They quickly fell madly in love and decided a month before the wedding date to get married.  Maggie’s two children, Maisie and Charlie, fell into the mix perfectly and adored Chad as much as Maggie did.  Maggie’s brother was the officiate, Charlie, Maggie’s eleven year old son was the best man and Maisie, Maggie’s fourteen year old daughter was the maid of honor.

Bozeman Wedding from Eye in the Sky Photography + Leslie Lukas Weddings & Events

If there is one thing we love here at SMP, it’s a pretty wedding. And we’re seeing more and more pretty soirees coming our way out of Big Sky Country, due largely in part to Leslie Lukas Weddings & Events. She takes the natural beauty that is Montana, bottles it up, mixes in a little of her own special love, and sprinkles it all over weddings like this from Eye in the Sky Photography to make them super special and super pretty. The whole wedding is some kind of magic, and it’s all right here.

From the gorgeous bride … Ramiro asked me to marry him on New Year’s Eve 2010 in front of my best friend with two glasses of champagne (our favorite) and an entire restaurant! It was very romantic. He was in the middle of explaining everyone that he really loved me and thought of the night as our anniversary, and I kept flipping my hand and telling him “yeah yeah yeah you so sweet.” He got down on one knee and I said “what are you doing?!” And he asked me! I was shocked!

For wedding venue, we chose Bozeman because my family has a had a home there for the past 10 years and Ramiro and my family go there every summer, so we thought it was the perfect place! Somewhere we both love and holds the greatest memories. I remember walking around the property when we decided and was amazed how little we had to do, the natural landscape is beautiful they prompted my colors, and I wanted to keep the integrity of the natural beauty. My husband is a romantic so I wanted my decor to be modern with a romantic farm edge. Chandeliers in the tress, lots of flowers, mismatched silverware and glassware and lots of candles!

There were so many things I loved about our day. A couple that stand out and really made my day wonderful: my uncle Steve married us which meant so much to Ramiro and I, as someone who knew me as a baby and has known Ramiro since we started dating. He was wonderful at it! My dance with my father, he’s a wonderful dancer, and being able to thank him for everything he’d done when it was just him and I.

It was such a magical, amazing, romantic, non stressful week and wedding, Leslie Lukas and her team made me and my family’s experience wonderful she introduced us to amazing people and businesses and to this day we still keep in contact with.

Glacier Park Inspiration Shoot from Glacier Park Weddings + Habitat Events

You may or may not have heard, but I’m from Montana.  Yeah, I know.  I am borderline crazy for my home state.  But, growing up just a 30-minute drive from Glacier National Park does that to a person. And in my humble opinion, there’s just no place in the world that beats the majestic mountains, crystal clear lakes and breathtaking views.  Need proof?  Take a look at this stunning shoot from the uber-talented Glacier Park Weddings and Habitat Events, which is like a little slice of heaven with a whole lot of wedding pretty mixed in.  Dying to say “I do” in the Big Sky State?  Check out even more from Green Door Photography right here.

From Glacier Park Weddings… In styling this mountain wedding shoot at Glacier National Park in Montana, we were inspired by the combination of distinct elements: a natural setting with shocks of bright colors, vintage details in a contemporary palette, gorgeous raw scenery with a modern twist.  We styled the bride and groom — a sweet couple who actually got married shortly after the shoot — in two distinct ways: a more flowy, boho look for the outdoor ceremony and a more flirty, hip vibe for the reception under the tent’s twinkly lights.  When the day of the shoot turned a bit rainy, we were glad for all of our cheery fuchsias and corals, which outshone the gray skies and complemented all the surrounding lush greens perfectly.  A game of croquet in the lawn livened things up, and the day ended with wedding cake and champagne for two in our intimate pine-framed wall tent.

Big Sky Engagement Session from Buffy Dekmar Photography

I can tell you first hand that Montana is spectacular place…. but pair the breathtaking scenery with an adorable couple and you have a recipe for serious swooning. These high school sweethearts (double swoon) had a little fun in the sun and snow for their e-session and the result is so good we almost don’t mind if winter lingers a bit longer. Their laughter and sweet kisses are made even more heart melting by the absolutely gorgeous images of Buffy Dekmar. It’s Big Sky beautiful and you can see even more right here in the gallery.

Colors

From Buffy Dekmar… This set of photos comes from a sweet engagement session in Big Sky, Montana, in January. Duncan and Tyler are high school sweethearts and I cannot wait to photograph their wedding later this year. I especially love the tones in this set–the warmth of their outfits against the evergreens and the snow.

Jackson Hole Photo Shoot from xowyo paper and press + Katy Gray Photography

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I have the biggest sweet tooth. I’m the kind of girl who could eat cupcakes for breakfast and feel no shame. But when this Jackson Hole shoot featuring the prettiest array of sweets hit my inbox, I came to the conclusion these desserts crafted by Persephone Bakery were just too cute to be consumed. They instead deserve a home inside this rustic chic photo shoot so perfectly put together by Katy Gray PhotographyLovely Day Events and xowyo paper and press. It’s a shoot packed to the brim with inspiration, and we’ve got every last pin-worthy picture waiting in the full gallery here.

Rustic

From xowyo paper and press. Our vision was rustic, wild and western, all while being elegant and feminine. We decided to shoot after the trees had lost their fall-colored leaves. Why would we do that? So many of the most beautiful weddings are held in the peak of summer or fall. But our shoot shows that you can have a gorgeous Teton wedding any time of year. We created a relaxed, rough, dusty, rustic look. Our florist describes it as dirty mountain chic, like a scene from a movie star cowgirl’s wedding. It’s laid back and gritty but simple and gorgeous.

The look of the shoot really started with the vintage Airstream from The Silver Bungalow. As Airstreams have become a big accessory for many weddings, this Jackson company has created a business around renting out its vintage Airstream. We wanted to show brides how they can incorporate an Airstream into a wedding, not just for pictures but as a staging area, as the bride’s dressing room, a lounge for the reception and as a decorative, showcase item. From there, we chose elements to capture a rustic, soft feminine look, combined with the beauty of the outdoors. A local rental company, Hunter Gatherer, provided a ton of vintage furniture, pillows and other decor to keep with our theme. And as the name suggests, owner Greer Terry hunts all over the West for unique pieces of vintage furniture and decor to accent weddings. Some of her favorite items in this shoot were vintage church pews.

Flowers were selected with rustic elegance in mind. The florist chose silver bowls to tie into the metal and silver theme of the Airstream. Those set the look from the bottom up. The Wyoming/Jackson Hole landscape color palette was the inspiration for the flowers. The silvery/white smooth bark of aspen trees dappled and cut with dark black swaths of color Inviwas mirrored in the flowers. The florist used locally cut dark (almost black) cone flowers and branches to contrast with the dusty pinks and the romantic, elegant look of the dinner plate dahlias and hydrangea. She also incorporated tons texture to mimic the wild grasses, sage brush, aspens and jagged mountain peaks, the rustic essence of our town. As for the cakes, a local artisan bakery, Persephone Bakery, created an artful elegant cake that expressed both rustic femininity and a connection to the beautiful floral abundance present in the Tetons during the summer months. They used a soft peach palette with subtle touches of lace to create an understated vintage element while keeping the design both simple and beautiful. They also provided French macarons to play off the monochromatic palette of oranges, pinks and peaches that reflect the colors of the setting sun in the western sky.

xowyo paper and press created invitations suites that paid homage to Jackson’s wildlife and color palette. The images have a vintage, throwback feel that are reminiscent of the Airstream era. But to keep things wild and rustic, they printed individual menus on brown paper bags and one larger one on a sheet of muslin. The gals at xowyo are always looking to keep things fresh and different, and the muslin menu not only served as decor during the reception, it’s also a sentimental piece the bride and groom can have framed to hang in their kitchen later on. The xowyo gals really wanted to show how some iconic Jackson images can be used in a way that is refined, fun and elegant, not hokey western that so many people are afraid of.  The one thing us vendors lacked was an actual wedding gown. But out model, Tara, used her mother’s old gown from when she was married in Jackson 20 years ago. She spent the morning like an actual bride, getting her hair done by Kate Kelly and makeup by Tanya Crocker. They really gave Tara a natural, ethereal look without making her look too done up. This is the Wild West, after all. Of course, none of this could have come together without the help of Lindsey Nickel at Lovely Day Events She kept us all organized and on schedule.
