From the Bride… We knew we wanted an intimate ceremony and reception that gave us the opportunity to highlight each special person that has supported us. Also we know we wanted it to be an elegant, unique and most of all cozy celebration. Through out this past year, we began to plan and create, detail by detail. As a starting point, we used our invitations to inspire and casually link all the details together. The day of the wedding was cozy, joyous and perfect. We were inspired by a solo cellist that we often hear playing in the Harvard Square T stop and found a beautiful cellist at Atlantic Strings to set the mood of the ceremony! Also, we had my cousin Christian DeRoeck play a rendition of Amazing Grace during the ceremony, which was both personal and beautiful.

Our guest book was a gift made by my mom. She also hand made the paste papers inside based on our color story. She designed the book to allow for photos and memorabilia to be added, which was perfect as we had an old school Fuji instax camera set up next to the guest book. (A modern photo booth would not look right in this beautiful house.) My girlfriends helped me figure out the design for the seating card stand. I had a few fun ideas, but they were all costly and time-consuming. They helped me combine my ideas into an easy-to-make, low-cost version. We wanted to honor our grandparents that have passed away, so we choose to gather photos of them to display at the reception, just like we do at home. The process of searching for the old photos was unique, as each photo search was a little dive in to our family history. My sister’s best friend from childhood, Nicolette is an amazing florist in NYC. I always knew when I got married, I wanted her to do the flowers. She has an eye for color and texture that is so unique. She made the arrangements look effortless and jaw dropping all at the same time. Nikki is the best (not to mention she had a four-page spread in Martha Stewart’s magazine this past February)! At my wedding shower, my dad had made birch candles holders as a little gift for all the women. They were so simple and so elegant that I asked him if he would make them as part of the centerpieces. Luckily, there were some birch trees that had recently fallen on their property, so my dad hand cut each candle stick with love.

My dress was a sample I found at Tulle Bridal. The label was cut out, but I didn’t care. It fit like a glove and the lace was old world. Deby helped make the dress perfect by altering the neckline to a sweetheart and adding a sash and applique. She also cropped an old fur coat of my mom’s for me to wear to/from. This was all done effortlessly. My shoes were from Piperlime. I found great shoes that did not rub, gave me height and were my favorite color! Being a footwear designer at Puma, when I found out that a limited release collaboration between Puma and Shinzo Pairs had just been released with a pair that perfectly matched my heels, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity! It was meant to be.

Boston Public Library Wedding by Snap! Photography

Winter in New England might deter some couples from hosting their nuptials during this fickle season but not so for this couple.  And good thing too because their Boston Public Library wedding is simply stunning with chic and elegant details fit for this majestic venue.  Their celebration, captured by Snap! Photography, gives winter weddings a good name and will, hopefully, inspire other couples to follow suit.  See it all in the full gallery!

From the Bride… Dan and I love winter in New England, so it was the natural choice for our wedding, but that put a lot of pressure on finding the perfect venue. We wanted a place that would be an ideal setting for our ceremony, cocktail hour and reception, was convenient and accessible and represented us as a couple. We visited only one venue in Boston – the Boston Public Library – and knew instantly it was the perfect backdrop for our big day. Not only is it a stunning historical building with many unique spaces, it is located in the heart of Boston and two blocks from our home. The BPL and my antique engagement ring, which was passed down from Dan’s great grandmother, were the two inspirations we used when designing our wedding. We wanted the day to be elegant, classic, and fun with lots of personal touches!

We performed the ceremony in the Abbey Room, which has beautiful murals, dark wood paneling, an ornate ceiling and marble floors, giving the room a very regal feel. It was important that we represent both our faiths so Dan and I wrote the ceremony from scratch with guidance of our priest and rabbi, tying in many Catholic and Jewish elements. For escort cards and one of our favors, we made wild blackberry jelly with the help of Dan’s mother, who is known for her delicious homemade preserves. For a second favor, SNAP! Photography took pictures of our guests on the BPL’s grand staircase during the cocktail hour, printed them and put them in glassine envelopes sealed with thank you stickers as keepsakes for guests to pick up at the end of the evening. These turned out beautifully and were a huge hit. For the reception, I swapped my long veil for a one-of-a-kind feather hairpiece made by Lo Boheme. Dan’s mother made a beautiful loaf of challah that she gave a blessing over before dinner and my mother led a prayer. We had photos of both our parents’ and grandparents’ weddings on the mantle over the fireplace behind the head table to honor where we came from. For dessert, in addition to our cake made by The Catered Affair, we brought in cannoli and rainbow cookies from our favorite bakery in Boston’s North End called Modern and reminiscent of my Italian heritage. Sayles Livingston created lush, beautiful bouquets and centerpieces full of texture and rich colors that complemented the space and time of year. She used candles everywhere from the grand staircase to the fireplace, and Groove Entertainment provided amber uplighting in the reception room to create a warm glow.

Beyond our ceremony, one of my favorite moments of the night was smoking cigars on the front steps of the library with Dan, my father and many friends and family members. It was the perfect opportunity to catch my breath and take everything in. Another favorite moment was late in the night when my 10-year-old cousin challenged Dan to a “dance-off.”  Each performed the worm, among other break dance moves, while guests went wild. I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes. The night was everything that we had hoped and more.

From Leah of Leah Haydock PhotographyBecky and Duke are self-proclaimed foodies and their vision for their intimate winter wedding was “a dinner party on steroids.” They chose to do a first look and family pictures before the ceremony so they could enjoy the rest of their day together. The day was full of surprises, from the stunning diamond earrings that Duke surprised Becky with to the a cappella group that sang “All You Need is Love” as the newlyweds kissed. After the ceremony, everyone relaxed with champagne and hors d’oeuvres before being transported to Mistral Restaurant for a delicious dinner. Becky and Duke decided to forgo dancing to spend time over delicious food and conversation with their close friends and family in the private dining room of Mistral. The cake had two dummy layers so that guests could enjoy the dessert tasting option and chocolate truffles at Mistral. The wedding cake was sent home with guests as wedding favors. Although it was a very chilly night with snow on the ground, we found time to stop by The Butcher Shop in the South End, which was the scene of Becky and Duke’s first date, and by Commonwealth Avenue for some night-time portraits.

Jackie and Matt got married in September of 2011 in Lincoln, Massachusetts, where Jackie grew up. Their wedding was held at the historic Pierce House, a beautiful Georgian mansion and surrounding property used as a venue for weddings and other receptions. The bride’s maid of honor, Alexa, is also a wedding designer and planner, and she spent so much time on the DIY details of the day, from the wooden, handwritten escort cards displayed in vintage library card catalogs to the wedding favors in small burlap sacks and decorated with hand-stamped, personalized tags with the bride and groom’s initials. All the personal, handmade elements of the wedding gave the whole evening a truly intimate feel. Jackie had eight bridesmaids, who all wore navy. There was lemonade and iced tea available to refresh guests before the outdoor ceremony, a box of cigars for guests to enjoy at the bar and a bonfire and s’mores station set up for late in the reception. The evening was full of laughter, tears and dancing — what a wonderful day!

From Kim of Kim Chapman PhotographyJolene and Robert had three requirements for their ideal wedding: good food, a view of the ocean and great company. A wedding caterer since 1999, Jolene is no stranger to planning weddings and was an integral part of the design every step of the way. With the Nantucket Sound surrounding the beach-front property and a nautical-themed reception tent, Jolene knew she’d found the perfect venue, the Popponesset Inn in Mashpee, Massachusetts. “When we walked in for the first time, I just knew there was so much to do with the ‘raw’ space, with the eclectic tent top,” says Jolene, who chose fuschia and yellow to accompany the navy and white of the Inn.

Anticipating rain, Jolene and Robert were relieved to find their wedding sky cloud-free and the beach a lovely backdrop for a photo-shoot prior to the big event. “For us to be able to share some quiet, private moments prior to the whirlwind of events was truly amazing and forever cherished,” recalls Jolene. As their event drew to a close, the couple exited through a gathering of their friends and family, all holding sparklers to commemorate the burst of love that had taken place that day.

With a vast amount of experience tacked to her name, Jolene opted to share some advice with future brides and couples: 1.) Stay completely true to yourself in all aspects of planning. This is, after all, your day. 2.) Etsy.com! For those of you who love unique items, but don’t trust yourself to “DIY,” Etsy is key. The talent and the wide array of all things handmade on the site is endless!

From the bride… We wanted our wedding to reflect our tastes and interests, which lean toward the past. We love the vintage aesthetic and old towns that remain seemingly unchanged. The Pierce House, in historic Lincoln, Massachusetts, was really the perfect venue for us. And we were lucky to find amazing vendors who truly gave us the look and feel — and food! — that we wanted. We were especially thrilled with the flowers, which were painstakingly assembled the morning of our wedding by a friend, and Lisa’s beautiful photography, which captured all of the wonderful moments and visuals from our special day. It is a joy for us to look through the photographs and have that day come to life for us again.

From Lisa of Lisa Rigby PhotographyMeredith and Todd used her grandmother’s vintage champagne glasses for their toasts. In lieu of favors, they donated to Farm Forward.

From the bride… Matt and I met in college, but it wasn’t until five years later that we reconnected during a getaway at a Newport, Rhode Island, beach house with group of friends. I soon moved from NYC to Boston, where he was living, and we’ve been together ever since in what feels like a fairy tale. I’d always envisioned a colorful, vibrant wedding on the waterfront. Living in Boston, with most our guests coming from out of town, I knew I wanted a wedding in the city that would be convenient and accessible. Luckily, I didn’t have to compromise my dream of an ocean-side wedding: we got married at a historic church and had the reception at the New England Aquarium, along Boston Harbor. Keeping with my Irish roots and love of all things Irish, I chose kelly green bridesmaids dresses by Jenny Yoo and kept the green theme throughout the wedding in our stationary, welcome bags and more. I wore a Priscilla of Boston gown in ivory.  The bodice was fitted with spectacular detail and a bow on my left hip. Inside the dress pocket, I was able to pin my grandmother’s four leaf clover pin, which was the perfect way to have her there with me. My engagement ring is my grandmother’s diamond which Matt got beautifully reset. I also wore her vintage emerald and diamond bracelet to complete the simple, elegant look.

A few days before our wedding, the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup championship. This was great news for the city, but when I learned that the team’s victory parade would close streets and fill the city on the same afternoon as my wedding, with a celebration right near the church, I got very nervous. It ended up being the best blessing in disguise. The energy around Boston that day was something we can’t even explain.  Our guests had a blast and were so excited to be part of history.  Matt especially loved getting our picture taken with one of the Boston Bruins’ star players.

Our reception was a dream come true. When we discovered the New England Aquarium’s spectacular pier overlooking the water, we were immediately hooked. We had both really wanted a wedding on the water so this couldn’t have been anymore perfect. Plus, we are both huge animal lovers so it really made the venue something special to us as a couple. We were able to take pictures inside the penguin exhibit, and our guests could watch the harbor seals and fur seals during cocktail hour. Everyone loved it! The aquarium catered the reception with many delicious hors d’oeuvres including a fabulous mashed potato martini bar with all the fixings.  They made each and every dish unique with little animal figurines, which the guests loved. The reception started at 6 p.m. and gave way to the perfect sunset over the sailboats in the harbor. The tent was a stark white so we added in some lanterns and up lighting to give it a soft romantic feel. The tables were covered in greens, whites, navy, and pinks with breathtaking floral centerpieces by Milestones Flowers. The view of the harbour was the best decoration of all! The guests danced the night away after dinner and as they just started to get hungry again, we had a late night food station of sliders and mini grilled cheeses — our favorite foods. After sunset, we were surprised when a boat parade of lights sailed across the harbor — it was like our own special finale.  It was my dream come true in every way … It was the perfect day!

From the bride… When my amazing husband and I started thinking about wedding venues, we wanted something that would reflect our personalities: a place where our guests would feel comfortable, welcomed and grounded, a place that would be just as memorable as the event itself. A barn wedding seemed to be the perfect union of everything we hoped for. Finding a site within our budget (that didn’t require cows being moved out) was a daunting task, until we found Gedney Farm in New Marlborough, Massachusetts. Gedney was once a dairy farm but has been renovated into a quaint B&B and reception hall. It embodied the simple elegance and earthiness that we’d been searching for.

Steve and I, selfishly, chose not to share our “first look” with our wedding guests. We wanted that moment be ours alone. Gedney set us up at Mepal Manor, which is just down the road from the farm. The unparalleled brilliance of our photographer, Judy Pak, captured the enchanted spirit of the moment. We feel so lucky to have found Judy! Besides being fun to work with, she effortlessly finds beauty and life in what most people see as just ordinary.

Our ceremony was outdoors under a beautiful tree surrounded by family and friends. I chose a peachy-coral palette, which was perfect for August. Each of the bridesmaids were encouraged to choose their own dress style and color within the theme. Their choices highlighted the whimsical atmosphere, which was echoed by the playful flower arrangements and bunches of sunflowers we purchased from a farm near the wedding venue and a local farm near our home in Connecticut. Andrea Wadsworth of AW Confections infused the ambiance of our wedding into her cakes. Yes, cakes! Andrea made an individual cake for each of our tables; each was as beautiful and delicious as the next. Repeating the countryside theme, each cake was placed on blocks of wood, a DIY undertaking by the groom himself. To add a personal touch, our guests used their own wedding cake knives as a tribute to the relationships that have influenced us. Everyone involved, especially our family and friends, helped us pull off a truly amazing day full of love.

From the bride… Keith’s Farm, with its rolling green fields, grazing cows and views of the big blue ocean beyond, set the mood for the whole wedding. It’s a a stunningly beautiful place, but also has a rustic-country vibe — the Vineyard at its most Vineyard-y. For colors, I picked my two favorites: green and purple. My friends picked their own bridesmaids dresses in different shades of purple. For flowers, I told Krishana the bouquets could be really wild, full of texture, with lots of deep purples and greens. She has her own flower fields on the island, and in September, I was able to walk through them and pick out what I liked. We wanted the wedding to highlight what we love about Martha’s Vineyard, from the Sweet Neck oysters to the music of Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish. On our invitations, we used a print from island artist Daniel Waters. To put a little personal touch and add some whimsy to the elegant tables, we bought a whole bunch of novelty and vintage salt and pepper shakers. We found most of them at Granddaddy’s, a giant antique shop in David’s home state of North Carolina.

I bought my dress at The Bridal Garden in New York City, a non-profit bridal boutique that sells discounted dresses, donated by designers, to raise money for New York City public schools. The boots and wreath I found on the BHLDN website. When I close my eyes, I can still see the sunset casting a golden glow in the tent, the faces of my friends and family, the tables set for dinner, and Johnny Hoy tuning up. I just knew it was going to be an amazing night.

From the bride… I wanted to incorporate my Greek culture with his Irish culture. We included a bagpiper at the ceremony, which was at a Greek Church. I also wanted the reception to look very “spring-like,” so I incorporated a lot of purple and fuschia with light green to make it feel like spring. The tablecloths were a light sage green and our escort card table was grass-colored.

We had a cigar roller, so the cigars had our names printed on them and were customized to people’s likings (mild, strong, etc). We also had a sausage cart at the end of the night serving sausages, which to us felt very Boston since when you come out for the bars in Boston, there’s always a sausage cart around cooking them up. We also had personalized rose flower petals made up around the base of our big centerpiece in the foyer for the reception. Also, donation cards made to St Jude’s in lieu of favors memorialized the groom’s cousin who passed away from brain cancer and who was supposed to be a bridesmaid.

Instead of a traditional first dance with my dad, we busted into a Greek dance across from each other with people throwing money at us, which was very different from what people were used to.

From the bride… Our love story began at the start of high school. Steve broke the ice during freshman year by asking me to “go out” via instant message. We dated throughout high school and during our four years together at college. Our lives then took us two hours east, to the wonderful city of Boston. This is where we started our careers and the rest of our lives together. Stephen proposed on the first morning of a 30+ person family vacation! It couldn’t have been more perfect to be celebrating with our loved ones once reaching our vacation destination!

We had just over a year to plan, and our vision was to have a romantic and personal wedding. When we walked into our venue for the first time, it literally took our breath away. We knew immediately that The Riverview was THE place for us.  It was both romantic and fabulous, with its all-over marble, gorgeous chandeliers and sky-high ceilings. Just a few of our personal touches included multi-generational family wedding pictures, cork place card holders for our love of wine, favors containing a secret family recipe of homemade limoncello, table names of our favorite things as a couple and a vintage family car! Our wedding day was a day to remember and a dream come true … finally getting to marry my high school sweetheart and best friend!

Julianne & Austin Wedding Trailer from GENERATIONS cinemastories on Vimeo.

From the bride… Despite growing up in the same town practically down the street from each other, Austin and I had never met. Set up by his mother on a blind date, we had a cup of coffee at a little cafe in Boston, the city which has now become our home. There were butterflies right away and the rest is history! When it came time for the wedding, we found the perfect venue at the beautiful Fairmont Copley Plaza right in the center of the city. The historic hotel captivated us with its gilded and lavish European details. As soon as we stepped foot in the Grand Ballroom, we knew right away that a New Year’s Eve event would match perfectly with our vision and the elegance of the space. Both the ceremony and reception were held in the ballroom. The amber-toned uplighting from Boston Event Lighting gave the room an extra glow. Under the guidance of wedding planner Alice Fay, it was a magical weekend captured by our talented photographer, Kelly Lorenz.

Keeping with the air of romance and vintage details of the wedding venue, the Lazaro dress I wore matched the tone of understated glamor. It had a sweetheart neckline, satin bow ribbon belt, and a tiered Victorian lace appliqué pleated and tiered skirt. I didn’t want to take it off! Every detail of the night kept to the warmth and luxury we envisioned. Silver and gold accents on all the paper products from The Greeting Shoppe and Papermart brought in the New Year’s Eve theme in a fun, casual way. The ivory cake with gold scroll embellishment from Cakes to Remember was a rich chocolate framboise flavor. We made sure to have leftovers the next day. The ceremony was held in the round which created an intimate feel as we stood under the crystal embellished huppah with our loved ones surrounding us on all sides. Since words are very special to both of us, we added special touches by writing our own vows, having my grandmother read and our mothers share a poem. The songs were also specially picked to enhance the ceremony. I walked down the aisle with my father to “Songbird,” sung by Katherine Jipson. She also sang “Feels Like Home” and “You Raise Me Up.” After all of the emotion of the ceremony, of course there had to be some laughter, which I provided by missing the breaking of the glass three times in a row until Austin came to my rescue!

The reception had a warm feel set by votive candlelight accenting the gorgeous variety of soft ivory flowers in mercury urns. Secretly, we had taken a few dance lessons at Boston Ballroom Dance Center to learn how to sway and dip in a style to match the elegant feel of the high-ceilinged room and sparkling chandeliers. We danced to “Ache” by James Carrington and then had our DJ, Cory Harding of Murray Hill Talent, start the party early. The dancing continued in to the wee hours of the night. Confetti and champagne at midnight helped to ring in the New Year as a surprise for guests. Before leaving, guests had midnight munchies and were given a medley of torrone from Modern Pastry as a favor — the same yummy dessert the groom hid the ring in when he proposed!

Alice and Ben met on Martha’s Vineyard in August 2001, on the eve of Ben’s 21st birthday, at a concert performed by Alice’s college singing group. Both were undergraduates at Yale (he a senior, she a sophomore), and they began dating the following school year. Martha’s Vineyard carries additional meaning for both of them, as their families have spent time on the island over the years. Alice’s mother’s home is perched on a hill in Chilmark with splendid English gardens throughout, as well a 180-degree view of the lush New England greenery below and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. When Ben proposed almost nine years later, there was no question where the wedding would be held.

With the indispensable help of wedding coordinator Julie Hatt, the couple set about organizing a ceremony and reception that combined simple elegance with the natural beauty and intimacy of the property. The bride chose a color palette of vivid purples, magentas, and blues, which went beautifully with the lush greenery and bright colors of the gardens. Stone walls are ubiquitous in Chilmark, and the stone wall that runs parallel to the ocean in the backyard of the house became a motif of the exquisitely designed and elegantly produced paper goods by Bryn Chernoff of Paperfinger. Alice and Ben recognized the risk they took in planning a summer wedding on an island in the Northeast, but as it turned out, the weather was absolutely perfect the entire weekend. The incredible team of photographers, led by Shawn Connell of Christian Oth Studio and supported by second photographer Glen Allsop, captured every detail and moment of the day to perfection.

As guests arrived for the ceremony, they were greeted with lemonade in mason jars and were provided shade under parasols that had been used previously at the weddings of two of Alice’s close friends. The simple ceremony celebrated the warmth and familiarity of the occasion. After the ceremony, guests milled about the grounds for an extended cocktail period before heading to the dinner tent where they were served a delicious meal of summer gazpacho (Alice’s mom’s recipe), local striped bass with island vegetables and corn pudding, and individual servings of mixed berry shortcake. The escort card table displayed wedding photographs of the couple’s parents and grandparents. Instead of a guest book, guests were invited to write personal message on simple cards, which the couple plans to incorporate into a scrapbook. As the sun went down, many guests sat perched along the stone wall chatting and enjoying the striking Vineyard sunset over the Atlantic. Ben and Alice departed through a path lined by sparklers waved by all of their friends and family who were given little boxes of chocolate for the journey home.

Because the wedding took place on an island and it was a destination wedding for everyone, it was important to the couple and their parents that all of the weekend’s events reflected a warm, intimate and hospitable atmosphere. The rehearsal dinner did that and more, and it really set the tone for the following day. The groom’s parents hosted a fabulous traditional lobster clambake, complete with fire pit and lobster bibs that said “Alice & Ben” above a red lobster. During cocktail hour, the guests wandered about the property, which includes lovely stone walls, grazing horses and an idyllic pond. For dinner, the guests were seated under a beautiful tent at nine long tables lined with gorgeous sunflowers and set with mason jar mugs, black-and-white checkered tablecloths and red napkins. A close friend of the groom’s brilliantly emceed a program of roughly 15 toasts and speeches. The night concluded with a fantastic slideshow created by a sister of the groom, and everyone departed having eaten well and laughed hard in a truly lovely setting.

From Lisa of Lisa Rigby PhotographyThese are some of my favorite photos from Courtney and Adam’s wedding at Willowdale Estate in Topsfield, Massachusetts. Courtney wore her mother’s wedding dress from 1976, her grandmother’s wedding band, and carried her grandmother’s beaded purse. For their first dance, Adam’s brother played guitar and sang. Courtney’s brother made their cake topper.

Courtney and Adam did something at their wedding that I’m seeing more often. After their public ceremony, they took time just for themselves and, through hand-written letters, exchanged private vows. It was my favorite part of the day.

Ashmont Grill Wedding by Spring Smith Studios

My love affair with this wedding by Spring Smith Studios started with the pops of purple around every corner  – I somewhat adore a perfectly-used hue (can you blame me?). Then my heart started to beat a bit faster with the way you can just feel how excited this couple is to be tying the knot, and when I wrapped my arms around the laid back yet causally elegant feeling of this fête – it was officially love. So let’s just say I started swooning over this duo’s big day from the beginning, and I have the full galley to thank for my goofy, wedding-loving grin this morning!

From the bride… We met at a college party. He was my friend’s cousin and just visiting for the weekend. I thought he was cute, and he thought I was cute. :) We didn’t have our first kiss until the second time he visited. We fell for each other hard right away; he told me he loved me after just one month of dating. I knew pretty soon after I met Dan that he was “the one.” I had never had so much fun with someone. My favorite memories are so simple: making dinner, watching a movie and falling asleep to records together. When he asked me to marry him, he knew I was expecting it (we picked out the ring together) but he also knew I wanted to be surprised. One time, we went on a hike and we were sitting on this rock overlooking the Flatiron mountains and I was so sure he was going to propose to me then, and he didn’t! Instead he woke me up in the middle of the night and asked me to turn around.  The ring was on my pillow and he asked me then. I was so surprised! And we still laugh about that time in the mountains — he says my face looked so disappointed that day! Our wedding day was perfect, so reflective of us. It was low key, classic and just fun. We didn’t want to do a formal sit-down dinner, cake cutting ceremony or have a giant bridal party. We did simple vows in the church I grew up in, followed by a big cocktail party at our favorite restaurant back east with 60 of our closest friends. Good food, drinks and some motown! I do remember the day, despite getting only 4 hours of sleep the night before! My favorite moment is a tie … seeing Dan in his suit, and me in my dress … and dancing with my Dad. Dan and I danced to the Black Keys “You’re the One.” Planning the wedding was actually fairly smooth! I think I was a little too ambitious. At one point I was going to do my own invitations, but after doing the save-the-dates, I nixed that idea. Leave lots of extra time if you plan on doing your own! Remember to laugh together … no matter what kind of day we’re having that always brings me back to why I fell in love and married him.

From the bride… We are lovers of the great outdoors and knew that we wanted to get married outside — somewhere beautiful and serene. We found our perfect spot at Spohr Gardens in Falmouth, Massachusetts, where I grew up. It holds a special place in my heart as my grandmother used to come down every spring when I was young to take a trip to these gardens to look at the thousands of daffodils that bloom there every year. She is long gone, but she was there with us on our wedding day. We got married on a dock overlooking the pond. It was warm, but there was a breeze and it was just perfect. Once everyone had left to go the reception, Stacey had Jim and I walk around the grounds, and snapped photos. These are some of my very favorites! It was all as magical and sweet as it looks, and we are so very lucky to have found each other. We are excited for all that lies ahead for our growing business and are enjoying time with each other before taking the next step to expand our family!

Nantucket Wedding from Soiree Floral + Cary Hazlegrove Photography

It’s almost February, LBBers, which means it’s pretty much almost March… which in turn means it’s almost April too… long story short, it’s almost time for some fabulous beach weddings right? We’re jumping the gun a little (don’t worry – we still LOVE everything about winter nuptials, we just needed a little watery vaca this morning) and heading straight for Nantucket with this gorgeous wedding, captured by Cary Hazlegorve Photography. The fantastic floral design, courtesy of Soiree Floral, is just one of the many things – like those adorable flower girls, or the rope bracelets the ‘maids are sporting – we love about this wedding. Click here for the rest!

Eliza and Anthony started dating in April, 2008 following an introduction by Eliza’s brother-in-law, Chip, who attended Princeton University and played lacrosse with Anthony. It seemed like just an introduction, but it was so much more. Eliza had just moved from Philadelphia to New York City in pursuit of her career as a nurse, but little did she know she would also find her future husband. Three years later, Anthony proposed under the Tree in Rockefeller Center following The Christmas Spectacular.

It was never a question where Eliza and Anthony wanted to have their wedding. Eliza’s Family has been going to Nantucket for over 40 years and Eliza has been there every year since her birth. To her, it is a family place, full of memories and tradition. When she was younger, she would put on rope bracelet the day she arrived on island and keep it on until it the end of summer. The bracelet always ended up worn with memories of her summer. She wanted to share these memories and create new ones with her family and friends, with her and Anthony’s special day as a centerpiece.

Fall has always been Eliza and Anthony’s favorite time on Nantucket; the colors of the island are still vivid from the summer sun and the ocean is still warm. Since they started dating they have visited the Island mid or late September, avoiding the summer crowds, having the beaches virtually to themselves, and lighting a fire when the sun went down. They were sure October was the perfect time for a wedding, and it turned out they were right. It was 65 degrees and sunny on their special day. It was simply magical.

It was important to Eliza and Anthony that their wedding not only represent them as a couple, but also the beauty and tradition of the island. From the moments guests arrived, they were greeted with bags filled with traditions of the Island; good luck pennies to throw off the departing ferry towards Brant Point and a small box of chocolate covered cranberries, a tribute to Nantucket’s October Cranberry Festival. And what better venue than the Great Harbor Yacht Club! A homage to the nautical traditions of the Island.

The bridesmaids looked beautiful, with their scallop shell necklaces, starfish earrings, and traditional Nantucket rope bracelets from Eliza’s Childhood. The colors of the bridesmaids dresses was pewter, a tribute to Nantucket, or the “The Gray Lady”, as it is known to those who visit her often. The maid of honor’s dress was dark red, representative of the cranberries that are a fall staple of the Island.

Guests were greeted with a ‘Sea Breeze’ upon arrival to the reception, a tribute to Eliza’s Granny Titi. It was her favorite drink.

Local artist, Jeanne van Etten, also known as the “Nantucket Mermaid,” created mermaid and pirate themed escort cards for each guest. The cards were of course used to direct guests to their table, but were also designed as postcards with personalized E & A postage attached. A detail thought of by the bride to enable each guest to write the newlyweds their best wishes and place them in the mail. Returning from their honeymoon, the couple was greeted with some spirited memories from a memorable night.

From the bride… I know every wedding is unique. Too many details go into them to not be and too many wedding magazines told me so. But I loved the decision we made for our officiants – our dads! – and knew just how unique it was when not one person (town clerk, venue contact, wedding planner, all guests) had heard of a (non-clergy member) dual-dad ceremony. Aside from marrying Jeff (and wearing flats), it was the best decision made that day. Though Jeff and I are both Jewish, neither of us approaches the religion from anything more than a customary perspective. On this day of ‘us’ it didn’t make sense to bring in someone to forever bind us using Hebrew that we didn’t understand and quoting beliefs that simply didn’t mean anything to us. What did mean something to us: both of our parents were still successfully married and incredibly in love. They had nearly eight decades of combined marital experience under their belts. They were both married the second weekend of June. We wanted our ceremony to be about love, about finding soul mates, and about learning what makes this work. We also opted not to break a good tradition and get married ourselves the second weekend of June.

We asked my dad first. I think my mom may have tipped him off to this as I made the mistake of mentioning it to her first. He was humbled, honored, and accepted the role, while quickly adding “But if you realize that this is as crazy as it is and want to back out, I won’t take offense.” Typical advice from my dad, who’s always been keen on making sure I knew to never feel pigeonholed growing up – with his most famous line being (when I was too young to even think of marriage): “If we’re at your wedding and about to walk down the aisle, and you feel that any part of this is off — I don’t care what’s been paid for, I don’t care how many people came in to town for you — we will turn right around, no questions asked, and figure it all out. Don’t feel pressured.” As a side note, I was lucky enough to pull him aside right before I DID actually walk down the aisle to let him know I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life. Jeff’s parents had a slightly different response. After sitting them both down, we told them there was something important we wanted to talk to them about. This set off an endless round of guesses. “No, we’re not having a baby,” and “No, we didn’t run off and get married already.” So by the time we got around to asking, they were totally caught off guard and a bit dumbfounded. “But … is it legal?!” This is a question Gary asked us up until our wedding day. We assured him it was, and the two dads took to the internet to become ordained Universal Life Ministers. An official card and a bumper sticker stating his new title helped to abate Gary’s fears.

We opted not to hear it ahead of time as we wanted to be in the moment and LISTEN to what they were sharing with us, rather than go through the motions of a ceremony we were all too familiar with. All four parents had endless conference calls in which my mom read my lines, Jeff’s mom read Jeff’s lines, and the dads turned their emotions into a perfect script. They had one rule: they both had to agree to what was incorporated, and if one didn’t feel it was right, it was dropped, not brought to trial. The result was magical, memorable and something that the town clerk, our wedding planner, and our guests had never witnessed before … a marriage by the dads. After Jeff was walked down the aisle by both his parents, Gary stood under the chuppah (a nod to tradition and the one concession we made to my mom who jokingly – kind of — said “But you’re both Jewish, of course you need it!”). After the bridal party made their way to the front, both my parents walked my down the aisle. My dad joined Gary, the moms brought black choir robes to their respective husbands (a touch the dads insisted upon to clearly separate their roles of ‘officiant’ and ‘dad’) and it began. The whole ceremony, every page of which I loved, was timed to 28 minutes and was nearly 40 pages long. We have a signed copy by the dads in our living room, and leaf through it often to remind ourselves of the lessons learned and that moment the four of us shared.
