Boston Public Library Wedding From Kari Herer Photography

We are big fans of Kari Herer over here at SMP, and one peek at this beyond stunning Boston Public Library wedding and you’ll see why. It’s as though each of her images tell the most lovely of stories, and when those stories are surrounding a Bride and Groom as gorgeous as these two? Pure wedding magic happens. We end up with a gallery worthy of some serious swooning, and you can do just that right here.

From the Bride… Our wish for our wedding was for it to be a reflection of us. We looked inward to identify what details were most important and how we could achieve something special and comfortable for us and our guests. We appreciate thoughtfulness in details so when I was having my gown made (which included elements from the wedding dress my great grandmother made for my mom) we asked for Michael’s tie to be made from the same fabric. The arbor we stood under during the ceremony and the way the chairs were set up was done so that there was no barrier between us and our guests. Planning the menu, music, flowers, and ceremony was done with cohesiveness and quality at the front of our minds. Everyone we worked with was incredibly kind and professional, making the day even more pleasant. Some of our favorite memories happened during our wedding and the photography we have captured the moments that made for an incredible day.

Martha’s Vineyard Wedding from Jocelyn Filley Photography

Weddings will always make me swoon, that’s a given. But if you want to really know what makes me tick, it’s the stories behind the soirees. The effort, the thought, the days that led up to a beautiful Bride walking down the aisle to meet her Groom. Which is precisely why I fell head over heels in love with this Martha’s Vineyard beauty captured by Jocelyn Filley Photography. It’s gorgeous backyard wedding meets the sweet stylings of this lovely Bride, and it all went off without a hitch thanks to ZBR Events. See every sweet moment right here.

From the Bride… When Jesse and I got engaged, we knew right away that we wanted to get married at my parents’ house on Martha’s Vineyard. Martha’s Vineyard is such a great place to have a wedding because you really can source so many items locally. Our caterer, Jan Buhrman of Kitchen Porch Catering emphasizes locally grown and sustainable food, and our florist, Krishana Collins, grows all of her own flowers right on the island. I felt really comfortable giving her free reign to design the flowers because I knew that they would be gorgeous no matter what. The only thing I knew I wanted were those dark purple dahlias in my wedding bouquet. Everything else I left up to her. She amazed me with what she came up with!

I was so lucky to have Zoe Barbey Ross and her assistant Megan Leonard of ZBR Events help plan the wedding. I knew that I could do most of the decor by myself, but I really needed their help coordinating with vendors and dealing with lots of the organization and logistics. They were wonderful. I didn’t have to think about any details on my wedding day. They understood what I wanted and they just took care of it!

Jocelyn Filley and her assistant Elizabeth Cecil were the perfect photographers for our wedding. They were so unobtrusive but also managed to be everywhere at once. I felt like they appreciated all of the little details as much as I did, and their pictures reflect the sense of fun and humor that we tried to capture in our wedding day.

Most of the decor we did ourselves. I could not have done it without my family and all of the friends who pitched in in the days before the wedding. We framed old family wedding photos and hung them on the porch. We found a lot of great items from Pottery Barn and save-on-crafts.com including shepherds hooks, mason jars, signs, and lanterns. Jesse painted all the signs and I hand-wrote all of the name cards on shipping hang tags decorated with a paper punch. My friends were so great — they labored over string lights and gift bags and they made the fantastic chair garland out of an old Martha’s Vineyard map. My friend Cate did everyone’s makeup. My parents’ gardener Ali Hedin made the chuppah (wedding canopy) from a fallen oak tree and cut all of the stumps for the table markers and the pie servers. I used a local printer for the menus and the programs rather than trying to do it online and I’m so glad I did. I didn’t need a designer — I just put together the text I wanted using a pretty free font I downloaded, and Kevin Cain at Tisbury Printer took care of the rest.

East Bridgewater Country Club Wedding from Katie Hall Photography

I basically live for two things: football and weddings.  I know, I know… it’s a strange combo.  But, every once in awhile those two things merge in the coolest of ways, like in this beautiful East Bridgewater wedding captured by Katie Hall Photography.  You see, this darling bride and groom happened to meet at a Patriot’s game – and after a day spent cheering on their favorite team, well… the rest is history.  A move to Seattle, an engagement in London and one drop-dead gorgeous wedding later (pretty pink hues + sweet details included), we’re here soaking in all of the lovely.  See every last moment the full gallery.

From the Bride… Eddie & I met in typical New England fashion at a Patriots football game. After a year of dating we embarked on a new adventure and headed west from Boston to live in Seattle. It became pretty apparent after the move that we were both in it for the long run and soon after we shared a memorable engagement in London. Thus began the 2-year cross country wedding planning. There was never a question geographically where we would get married, as we both pictured a vibrant New England Spring wedding. Having a shabby chic feel in mind when scouting a venue, The Villa at Rider Country club’s Madera room stuck out. We fell in love with Madera room’s rustic yet polished feel with their dueling fireplaces and exposed beams. We turned to a simplistic approach with decor, partly due to the fact that we were planning the wedding cross country with limited trips back to Massachusetts, but it turned out beautifully. The tables were decorated with rustic birch & mercury glass flower vases filled with peonies, football mums, & spray roses. Candles lined the mantels and the room glowed with amber uplighting, giving off a warm and romantic feel.  We BOTH have a love for pink, which played a dominate role in our color scheme, from a bright Raspberry on the bridesmaids to the light pink linens.

Everything about the day went perfectly, from beginning the day pampering with my ladies, to the first look, to our traditional vows, to our very last dance.

DIY Nantucket Wedding from Henry + Mac

An intimate Nantucket wedding at The Chanticleer basically sounds like heaven to me, and one peek at the pretty captured by Henry + Mac and it’s safe to say it looked like heaven too. With sweet DIY touches to make the wedding personal, a candlelit dinner and florals so beautiful they’ll leave you breathless – this Nantucket wedding is a one for the books, and you can see all the reasons why right here.

From the Bride… Eric and I wanted to have a small wedding, to be surrounded by the people we love and care about the most. We got engaged in Nantucket and knew right away that it was the perfect place for us to be married. And as soon as we walked into the courtyard of the Chanticleer, we both knew that was it. It just felt right. It’s absolutely beautiful but felt relaxed and comfortable. It was a bonus was that the food is spectacular. When I started planning the decor for the wedding, my goal was for it to feel comfortable and not too fussy and for the color palette to be soft – pinks, peaches, creams, seafoam greens, gold. Most of our wedding was DIY – we created our invitations, menus, centerpieces (we spray painted the candlesticks gold and all the flowers were done by my very talented aunt). We were lucky because the restaurant is already so gorgeous that we didn’t feel the need to go overboard with flowers and decor. I loved the idea of everything being illuminated with a lot of candlelight, so there were lots of candles everywhere.

I think my dress fit the decor and space perfectly – it was flowy and breezy and super comfortable. It actually isn’t a wedding dress and I’m excited for when I can wear it again! The day and the entire weekend was beautiful and full of so much love. There were definitley some hiccups and and it wasn’t perfect, but the thing I remember most is how happy and loved I felt and that will stay with me forever.[dotted] Wedding Photography: Henry + Mac | Wedding Venue: The Chanticleer, Nantucket, MA | Officiant: Lisa Ann Donegan | Floral Design: DIY by the Bride’s Aunt | Flowers via  Flowers on Chestnut | Beer + Wine: Cisco Brewery, Nantucket | DJ: Phil Taylor of ACK DJ Services | Hair + Makeup : Joey Rose of Rinse in Philadelphia | Wedding Dress: Chloe | Shoes: Miu Miu | Groom’s Suit: J.Crew | DIY Details: Bride, Owner of  Home, a furnishings boutique in Philadelphia

Lyman Estate Wedding from Pizzuti Studios

Any girl who describes her dream wedding as “soft, sophisticated, and, mostly, pretty” is a girl who would fit in here at SMP without the blink of an eye. And when she handmakes her entire, soft, sophisticated, pretty soiree, well, let’s just say we’re rolling out the welcome mats. She wed her love in a wedding captured by Pizzuti Studios, that simply put, was a gallery full of good.

From The Bride… The night Devrin and I met, my friends were trying to set me up with his roommate, but there was something about Devrin that caught my attention instead. He had a 1979 Mercedes 240D that was pea green and didn’t turn off when you took the key out of the ignition. And his candlepin bowling skills rivaled mine for being the worst in the group. Devrin and I ran into each other occasionally over the next few years and despite my attempts to convey my interest in him, he just didn’t seem to catch on. It wasn’t until we both graduated from college and independently moved to Boston, and I had nearly given up, that he finally asked me out. We shared a great first date at a little Italian restaurant and we never looked back. Two and half years later, he proposed on a quiet night at home with flowers, lots of candles, and homemade cupcakes that spelled out “Will you marry me?”

While I wasn’t the girl who grew up imagining my wedding, I am a definitely girl at heart. I love pink and gold, flowers and lace, ribbons and pearls. As soon as I started envisioning our wedding, I knew I wanted something soft, sophisticated and, mostly, pretty. Somehow I managed to convince Devrin to let me have a wedding that was decidedly feminine. Coming from a creative background with some event planning experience, I wanted to plan everything ourselves. We fell in love with our venue the minute we walked in, and we let it guide our planning process. We incorporated details to make the day feel special, intimate and “like us”, but allowed the natural beauty and architecture of the venue to come through. I made much of the décor myself; the ribbon wands to wave during the ceremony, the bridesmaids’ jewelry designed specifically for each girl, every single piece of paper from the invitations to ceremony programs to individualized menu cards. I even spent 4 hours writing every one of our guests’ names on the giant mirror that took the place of escort cards.

The day of the wedding was an amazing whirlwind. Months later, I still have to remind myself that it actually happened and I didn’t dream it. Many of our guests traveled quite a distance to be there and we felt so loved and honored that they were able to celebrate with us. Everyone had a blast and Devrin and I did not stop smiling for the entire day. All of our planning had come together and the result was so much more beautiful than we could have ever imagined. We could not have asked for a better day.[dotted]Wedding Photography: Pizzuti Studios | Venue: Lyman Estate, Waltham, Massachusetts | Floral Design: Karla Cassidy Designs | Caterer: Harvest| Invitations + Paper Goods: Bride, Nicole Talen | Hair: Mia at MiAlisa Salon | DJ: Sheldon from C-Zone Music | Dress: Casablanca (with alterations)| Bridesmaids Dresses: Bill Levkoff | Shoes: Something Bleu by Butter | Groom’s Attire: Brooks Brothers | Groom’s Shoes: To Boot NY | Decor: (ribbon wands, guestbook frame, seating mirror, table number frames) Bride, Nicole Talen

Backyard Williamstown Wedding from Daniel Aaron Sprague

This couple has made it through some pretty great, big distances in their relationship (just see below) so at the end of the distance and the beginning of the “we” they decided to throw a gorgeous, and I mean gorgeous, soiree to celebrate their love. And lucky for us, the amazingly talented Daniel Aaron Sprague was on hand to capture the whole thing… so we’ve got a fabulous gallery in which to spend our day!

From the Bride… Chris and I were married in the meadows outside Chris’ family home in Williamstown, Massachusetts.  We met seven years before as undergraduates at Middlebury College in Vermont, so we were thrilled to exchange vows with the Green Mountains of Vermont behind us.

When Chris graduated from Middlebury in 2006 and I had one more year of college, we were prepared to go our separate ways but our break-up lasted only two weeks. We decided not to let distance or life circumstances get in the way of a good thing. Since then, we pursued graduate degrees on opposite sides of the country and along the way have made long distance work from the following state combinations: CA-NJ, NY-VT, NY-CA, OH-CA, WA-CA.  This only added to our excitement because we knew our wedding symbolized the end of long distance and the beginning of our new chapter as husband and wife.

When I envisioned our wedding day, I wanted bright punchy colors to accent the lush green setting.  It was important to both of us that we also celebrate all that is wonderful about New England and the Berkshires in late summer with colorful, seasonal flowers and locally sourced food.  I wanted all of my bridesmaids to feel beautiful and comfortable and asked each of them to pick their own yellow dress and whatever shoes they liked best.  Their festive footwear signified the personalized and playful feel I wanted to create.  One of our favorite keepsakes from the wedding was the certificate that Jenny from Wendu Ink created for us.  It is now framed and hanging in our kitchen and we love looking at the signatures of all of the family and friends who surrounded us with their love on our wedding day.

We were so thankful for the special, and unique contributions that our family and friends made to our wedding weekend. My mother, a Superior Court Judge in New Jersey, performed the wedding ceremony that left most guests with a few tears in their eyes.  One of my bridesmaids sewed yellow table runners while another worked with her husband to create custom directional signage pointing to important places for our families and wedding party.  For dessert, Chris’ parents provided a family favorite, Graeter’s Ice Cream straight from Cincinnati, OH.  We departed through an aisle of sparklers and hopped in my father’s 1985 station wagon, which he has proudly owned since I was a baby.  Thanks to our incredible vendors and generous family and friends, our wedding was truly everything we dreamed of.

New Bedford Whaling Museum Wedding from Jennifer White Photography

When your mother is the owner of Fatima’s Bridal in New Bedford, finding the dress of your dreams becomes the easiest part of planning your wedding.  Especially when she happens to have custom gown making down to an absolute science.  And when this darling bride found the prettiest lace ever in NYC, she knew it was just the fabric she needed to create her dream gown.  The result?  A seriously gorgeous work of art that shines bright in this classic meets vintage stunner of a wedding.  See the dress (and every last breathtaking detail) captured by Jennifer White in the full gallery.

From Jennifer White PhotographySandy & Ben planned an amazing wedding day that perfectly captured their unique style and incorporated a ton of personal details. The ceremony, initially planned for the gardens of the Roch-Jones Duff House in New Bedford, was held under a tent on the grounds due to the rainy weather. Rather than dampen their spirits, the rain only served to enhance the romantic and intimate feel of the ceremony, and provided a great opportunity for cuddling under an umbrella for some portraits! The cocktail hour and reception were held among the New Bedford Whaling Museum’s historical artifacts, whale skeletons, and replica ship – a nod to Sandy’s heritage and Ben’s love of Melville (who can be seen worn in finger-puppet form by their wedding officiant!).

From the Bride… In planning my wedding, it was important to me to find unique little details that reflected my taste and personality: that is anything handmade and artistic with a vintage feel. I found local artists (some of which are friends and family) and sourced some things from Etsy. My dress was made by my wonderfully talented mother, Fatima Rocha, owner of Fatima’s Bridal in New Bedford, Massachusetts.  Although she has a store filled with beautiful dresses, I wanted something really personal and unique, and I knew what she was capable of, so we hit Mood Fabrics in New York City and found this amazing lace and she went to work! It was really hard to find the perfect vintage inspired shoe, until I stumbled upon Rachel Simpson, the downside is that they are not available in the US yet.

My husband had read Herman Melville’s Moby Dick because he was fascinated with the history of the whaling industry in New Bedford where my family is from.  So of course I took him to see the Whaling Museum during one of our visits to New Bedford, and that’s when we decided it would be the perfect place to have our reception! I felt it was not only a beautiful setting with rich history, but also a great way to pay homage to my Portuguese Azorean roots that have so many strong connections to both whaling history and the city of New Bedford.

Martha’s Vineyard Wedding from Rachel Kate Photography

Charming. If there was one word I could place on this picture perfect wedding from Rachel Kate Photography, that would be it – charming. It’s the type of fête where you can just feel the sweetness by simply scrolling through the gallery, and I can’t think of anything better than that. Add the gorgeous vistas of this couple’s beloved Martha’s Vineyard, and it’s image after image of pure pretty. See it all here

From Rachel Kate PhotographySara and Garrett are the perfect couple. They had their beautiful summer wedding On Martha’s Vineyard in August of 2012. It was an insanely hot day but one of the most gorgeous weddings I have been lucky enough to be a part of. Garrett grew up on the Vineyard and his family still lives there. Of course the Vineyard is therefore a big part of Sara and Garrett’s lives. The got married at the Old Whaling Church and the reception was held right next door at the Daniel Fisher House. A beautiful estate that lent itself to the Vineyard charm with so many thoughtful details everywhere we looked.. The best part of the wedding was how each and every guest fit perfectly, like a puzzle into the landscape of this day. The Nantucket reds, bow ties, and pastel colors of the guest attire just went so perfectly with this day.

Cape Cod Wedding from Katie Pietrowski Photography

I love coastal New England. And it’s weddings like this one from Katie Pietrowski Photography that make me remember all the reasons why. Beyond its gorgeous beaches, delicious clambakes, and shingled houses – what I absolutely love the most are the people that retreat to the stunning sandy shores. Take these two newlyweds for example, they nailed that seaside chic feel on their big day in a way you would only see in New England, and for that, I couldn’t love them more. See all of this seaside soiree here.

From the Bride… Tom and I were set up on a blind date by Tom’s roommate and one of my best friends, who were themselves best friends from Middlebury (they went on to get married themselves…I am convinced the setup was a ploy to make sure they ended up together!) But masterminded scheme, or fate…it ended up working! Tom and I dated for 3 years, before he proposed in a romantic/ridiculous fashion on a cold January night on the  Boston Harbor with a Pat Benatar impersonator to serenade us! (Pat B is my favorite).

Planning the wedding was a ton of fun. I have always spent the summers in Falmouth, Cape Cod, and Tom had also been spending summers there with his grandparents, so it made perfect sense to have our wedding there, in the fields behind my parents’ house. Our vibe for the wedding was a relaxed summer feel from beach to field, we wanted it to feel very welcoming and low key. Basically an ideal summer weekend.

From there we just made the event our own, from the wedding party lunch on a schooner in vineyard sound, to a welcome cocktail party on the beach with bonfires surrounded by adirondack chairs made by Tom, his father and uncles, the beginning of the weekend couldn’t have been more fun!

And the wedding itself was no exception…it was pretty special to be able to invite everyone to my home and to share a place that was so important to me and Tom. As a sailor myself, the Sperry Tents made of sailcloth is just a magical venue set against the backdrop of the fields. We overstuffed our guests on tons of appetizers (Chef Roland is a genius with the apps) and oysters from the Shuck Truck. And then for dinner we mixed it up a bit by having our favorite Boston restaurant Orincco cater two of our favorite dishes. Well fed & boozed up (warning: those ball jars can hold a lot!), our guest took the dance floor by force, which isn’t hard when the band is Sultans of Swing! Of course, fake Pat Benatar made another appearance…it wouldn’t have been complete without her. And then we closed down the night with some Crab Rangoons – another personal element as my friends are all rang fans and dedicated celebrators of National Crab Rangoon Day (Feb. 13th!). The whole weekend was just perfect. And it was awesome to have Katie Pietrowski be able to capture it all from the first look to the last dance, she was able to capture all the little touches and all the guests experiences!

For all you beginning this process..HAVE FUN! It is a pretty awesome experience to craft an evening for all your friends and family. And even despite all the planning and hype, you will be blown away by the experience on your wedding day. The love, support and energy of everyone you love around you just can’t be described!

Kentucky Derby-Inspired Bridal Shower Shoot from Lauren Wells Events

I’ve never met a styled shoot I didn’t want to swoon, but this Kentucky Derby bridal shower takes that love to a whole new level. And what’s even better than playful pastels, pretty pink florals and those wide brimmed hats are the vendors who pulled it all together. I’m talking creatives like Lauren WellsPollen Floral Design and Cambria Grace who brought this detail-driven inspiration shoot to life. Spend your morning in the full gallery of gal pal goodness and you’ll see why this, my dears, is one for the books.

From Lauren Wells Events: We loved the idea of a Kentucky Derby themed bridal shower for so many reasons… it would allow us to play with all the beautiful pastel colors that are perfect for spring, it would let us use real, live horses as models, and Krissy from Pollen would get to go nuts with floral hats and garlands!

For the colors, we incorporated peach, mint, yellow, pale pink and lavender, with accents of silver (julep cups) and gold (DIY elements). With the Derby being in Kentucky and all, we knew velvet. Vintage and lace would really capture that Southern vibe. We used mismatched vintage seating and china, and loads of milk glass for the vessels. We also found the most perfect venue for the shoot, aptly titled “Inn on the Horse Farm.”

The mint julep bar was a fun and classic element, with the praline and bourbon-infused naked cake and bourbon-bacon-coffee-caramel popcorn adding a fun twist to some traditional sweets. To go with the Derby’s “running of the roses,” we used rose lemonades as the non-alcoholic drinks. Being a huge fan of puns, we worked with Alaina at Cheer Up Press to design the beautiful paper goods, such as the “sure bet” invitation and the “mint to be” cocktail sign. We also had fun with a few DIY projects, such as the lace doily lanterns strung from the tree, the gold horse place cards, the wood horseshoe sign, and of course some drink stirrers – what is a party without some cute drink stirrers? The shoot was an absolute blast, and perfect inspiration for a wedding, a shower, or any spring-time party!

Martha’s Vineyard Wedding from Kristen Leigh Conklin + Desiree Spinner Events

There’s just something about a Martha’s Vineyard wedding that can’t be replicated elsewhere.  Maybe it has a little something to do with the breathtaking scenery and beautiful traditions steeped into the island’s history… the exact something that drew these two sweeties to Edgartown to host their nautical-inspired soiree.  Styled to perfection by Desiree Spinner Events and featuring beautiful blooms from Sayles Livingston Design, it’s Martha’s Vineyard perfection, all captured in pretty, pretty images by Kristen Leigh Conklin.  See every last one in the full gallery.

Can’t get enough of this beautiful day?  Soak in this film from Zinnia Films.  It’s amazing.

From the Bride… Brant came out to Martha’s Vineyard for the first time over Labor Day 2011, which is when I normally rent a cottage for myself and whatever friends I can scramble together to stay with me.  Brant came out for a few days and fell in love with the island.  As a native of Montana, he had no exposure to the beauty of New England summers, except for what he had read about in books and seen in films.  The beauty of the island that time of year astonished him, and so the day after we got engaged, when I asked him where he wanted us to get married, his immediate response was “On the Vineyard.”

So, on September 22, 2012, Brant and I married at St. Elizabeth’s and had an outdoor reception down the street at a private home overlooking the harbor.  After a fun welcome clam bake at Seafood Shanty the night before, we woke up Saturday to overcast weather.   Our first look photos at the harbor had a cloudy backdrop, but at least it wasn’t raining.

As I waited to walk through the church door, the most magical thing happened — the clouds parted and the sun started glowing against a clear blue sky!  When the doors opened, the bright light shined on my back creating an almost halo-type effect as I walked down the aisle with my father.  It was magical.

After the wedding we walked over to our reception.  It was more beautiful than I had ever dreamed.  Not only was I blown away by the amazing styling, but being on the water with the perfection of a New England Indian Summer day put me in a complete state of euphoria. Most of all, it made us so happy to see so many of our friends from different places and times in our lives come together and develop new friendship through the wedding weekend.  Many had never previously met, so it meant so much to us that everyone became such fast friends.  We danced all afternoon into the evening — almost everyone was on the dance floor the ENTIRE time!  What a bizarre scene it must have been for an outsider to see all these people dancing in the middle of the afternoon!

We ended the night with a sparkler exit — using sparklers, our guests created a tunnel of light as we ran up the driveway and off to our afterparty.  It was truly a magical end to a magical day. Six hours passed in a blink.  I’ll admit I was a bit sad as I got ready for bed that night and I turned to Brant and asked if we could do it all over again.  I remember he smiled, laughed a little bit, and agreed that it was the best day of his life too, and reminded me that what made it so special was that its a once-in-a-lifetime event and that type of magic could never be recreated.  True.  I have come to realize that we don’t need to do it agin to relive that day because months later, whenever I look at our wedding photos or reminisce with friends about that day, I get the joy of revisiting that day in my memory and that dizzying feeling of euphoria quickly returns.

Boston Engagement Session From Kirra Cheers

Stories are what make my heart sing. I love to hear how two people go from strangers to lovebirds, and Kirra Cheers is my kindred spirit in that regard. Her images of these two soon to be Mr. & Mrs are beautiful, of course, but they are also taken on the street in Boston that started their love story – which has my heart singing the sweetest of songs. See it all here.

From Kirra CheersI like my photos to tell stories. I don’t believe in choosing photo locations simply because they are pretty or hip or worse because that is where everyone else gets their photos taken. Their has to be a story and a connection to the couple.

So when considering locations for their engagement shoot in Boston, I asked Shannon & Mike to consider places that meant something to them. The answer was so simple and beautiful. When they first met, Mike & Shannon lived in apartments directly across the street from one another, so I photographed them on the street where their love was born. We then took a stroll through the neighborhood to their favourite cafe and watched the sunset. It was such a nice afternoon and a wonderful opportunity to get to know Shannon & Mike.

From Boston to Byron, a winter wonderland to a summer paradise – I can’t wait to photograph their wedding in Byron and capture the next chapter of their journey together.

Cape Cod Wedding at Overbrook House from Katie Gardner Photography

Looking for some DIY inspiration? Look no further than all the details tucked into this Cape Cod celebration. It’s DIY done oh-so-right, all in the prettiest of Cape Cod settings, surrounding the most adorable of duos. Katie Gardner Photography captured all the crafty goodness, so be sure to soak up every last inspirational image right here.

From the Bride… Most of our friends and family were all in New England, so we knew right away that we had to have the wedding back east.  When I discovered Overbrook House I just knew it was perfect for us.  It was rustic, beautiful, secluded, required a DIY-er, was so quintessential New England and was conveniently located for many of our guests. This was the first party we had ever planned, it was a huge undertaking and we insisted on doing everything ourselves.  We were definitely on a budget and we knew that doing as much as we could ourselves would not only save us money but give us the most control and satisfaction with the finished product.

We decided on some themes early on: Romantic (French shabby chic inspired), Woodsy (forest, moss), Rustic (garden party), and Vintage (like stepping back in time).  With our DIY save the dates sent out, we started getting down to the details. I wanted it to feel like stepping back in time under the sailcloth tent with the soft lush romantic tablescape.  We decided to spend the money renting pricier but the beautiful sailcloth tent with wooden poles and antique-look lamps and the wooden painted ballroom chairs.  The chairs dressed up both the ceremony and the reception and banquet seating gave the reception a community feels which felt more like a small intimate party rather than a huge event.

We spent a few days folding paper cranes then stringing them on twine so when we got to the venue we just had to tie them up, which seemed like it was going to be easy!  Well it turns out that strung up paper cranes get into a tangled mess so easily.  So we almost gave up on the whole thing about 10 times, but in the end they look beautiful and added a nice element to our ceremony location.  The other garland we created was hung from the limbs of the tree where we took our first look photos.  I had spent so many hours cutting, folding and gluing the garland that I was so disappointed when I ran out of time the morning of the ceremony and had to head inside to get ready without hanging it.  But when I came out to surprise Andrew for our first look, I was also surprised to find all the garland had been hung by my friends and family.

The bouquets and arrangements had to be rustic but also soft and romantic.  I wanted them to look like they were just picked at random from the most beautiful garden in the world. All the vases used for centerpieces were items my mother had collected in the months prior to the wedding at yard sales and antique shops.  I ordered the flowers online and had them delivered to the venue and our close family friend Brian Flynn and his sister.  It was a ton of work!  I had no idea so much worked went into the prep and arrangement of all these bouquets there is no way I would have been able to do them myself so Brian and his sister absolutely made our day.

For Our Beloved Boston

Photography: Gabe Aceves Photography

There really aren’t words for what our beloved city has been through this week. This horrible event has hit so very close to home, and although we are all safe at this moment, it has shaken us to our core. These are our neighbors, our friends, our friends of friends. And to our fellow Bostonians, we pray that you stay safe and sound and that we can all use this time to pause and really understand the magnitude of what our city is fighting for.

For those of you watching from afar, hold your love ones extra tight today, and know that we are so grateful for all of your well-wishes as we pull through this together.

Below are just a small few of the many, many families who have been touched by this tragedy. They are our friends and people that have touched our SMP family in one way or another. If you know of additional authentic online fundraisers for the victims feel free to share them in the comments below, and we’ll be sure to spread them to our readers.

Boston Engagement Session from Fat Orange Cat Studio

There is so much I want to say about our beloved city right now. I could go on and on about how its cobblestone streets are the most charming, or how its historic sights can’t be matched, or how it’s quirky design can’t be compared (have you ever tried to navigate this pretty city?) – but the thing I absolutely love most are the people that fill it’s gas-lamp lit streets. People like these two cuties captured by Fat Orange Cat Studio.  Who, even though they weren’t born and raised in Boston, couldn’t imagine their engagement session anywhere else. And how can you blame them? The spirt and sights of Boston simply can’t be beat. See the entire session right here.

From the Bride… Even though we are in getting married in Charleston, South Carolina, we really wanted to do our engagement photos in our cozy little Boston neighborhood and in our apartment with our pug, Winston, and cat, Chloe. I also wanted it to reflect our style and really represent us. After six years of dating, we got engaged on a California convertible road trip at the Parker in Palm Springs, which is designed by my favorite designer Jonathan Adler. Our amazing photographer Li Ward from Fat Cat Studios incorporated a lot of our Jonathan Adler-esque accents in our apartment, including the “happy” pillow that was in the hotel where we got engaged. We live in the coziest neighborhood South End and really wanted to take some shots steps outside our front door to have memories of where our first home together.

Choosing Entertainment for your Wedding with Boston Common Band

I love to dance. Being an 80’s baby, I will forever love Dirty Dancing and Footloose. So, it’s no surprise that when the tunes start at a wedding, I kick my heels off and don’t stop for the rest of the night. But behind the scenes and before all the fun can happen, choosing entertainment for your wedding can be quite a challenge. Should you have a band or a DJ? What should you look for when hiring entertainment? How much should you budget? Jonathan Wiegratz of Boston Common Band is here with us today to answer all of those questions and more. So put your dancing shoes on (or kick them off!) because your wedding should be a party you’ll never forget.

SMP: Tell us a bit about Boston Common Band. What do you do and why do you rock?
BCB: Boston Common Band is a multi ‘Best of Boston’ award winning wedding band serving all of New England. Comprised of recently graduated musicians from the prestigious Berklee College of Music & Northeastern we have shared the stage with artists from John Mayer, Lady Gaga, Jason Mraz, Ben Folds, The Deftones, and many others.

Our trend-setting style and approach to performances always deliver a high-energy, heart-racing, booty-shakin’ experience by blending a perfect mix of Pop Rock, R&B and Dance music. Our professionalism and creative talent will energize your guests and ensure that your event will be the success you always dreamed for it to be!

SMP: What is the advantage of having a band vs. a DJ and vice versa?
BCB: This is the age-old question about what type of entertainment to have at your wedding. A DJ’s strength lies in the fact that they have a nearly unlimited play-list. A DJ is only limited by the amount of songs on their hard drive and skill at seamlessly beat-matching song mixes together.

Where a DJ can certainly “bring it” to the party, having a Band brings a different element all its own. The aesthetic appeal of a band, combined with the stylistic flare they put on a song can take a party to a whole other level.

Having said that, Boston Common Band has revolutionized the wedding entertainment industry by offering a “Band & DJ” package with a real DJ as a member of the band.  This gives Brides and Grooms the best of both worlds, in that they have the flexibility that a DJ provides, combined with the excitement and energy that only a band can bring.

SMP: What qualities should a couple look for when choosing a Band or DJ?
BCB: When speaking to a prospective Band or DJ, get a sense for their style and approach to weddings. Ask what type of genres they perform and does that line up with your favorite genres. Perhaps most importantly, get a sense for your entertainer’s personality and pride in their work! When looking at diamonds, you have the “4 C’s”… in the Entertainment industry, we have the “3 P’s” : Performance – Professionalism – Production.  There’s a huge distinction between many bands that bring their “A-Games” to every performance, versus some of the other bottom-feeder groups.

Furthermore, top-quality entertainment does more than just perform songs. Band’s and DJ’s who will make your party successful act truly as your host for the evening, keeping guest where they need to be according to the agenda, managing the energy level effectively, and ultimately ensuring that everyone is partying all night long. Things to ask or look for…

MC / Host — Does your entertainer understand your vision for the evening? What’s his/her personality on the mic for introductions and for guiding the evening along? Have they spent time working with you and the event coordinator, planning the evening agenda?

Sound System — Does your entertainer have scalable sound systems that can cover small spaces as well as large venues? IE; A small boombox won’t be enough for your 400 person ballroom… just the same as a 2000 watt speaker system is probably overkill for cocktail hour!

Lighting — Does your entertainer have intelligently controlled lighting… or is it just set to ‘random’ flashing? IE; Do the lights change tastefully and fluidly with the music, or will there be random blinking lights while you’re having your “First Dance”?

SMP: What other factors should couples consider when choosing entertainment?
Other factors to consider when looking at Entertainment are the logistical items. Make sure your chosen venue has enough area for a Band or DJ to setup. For example, a seven piece band would not be able to fit into a 75 sq ft area, yet a DJ could.  Also, make sure the venue has sufficient power for speakers and lighting. A DJ will typically ask for two circuits, whereas a band will require three or more. Lastly, be sure to ask about any travel policies, if the wedding is not local to the area. Many entertainers have a certain distance they are willing to travel before an overnight stay will be required.

SMP: How much should a couple budget for a great band or DJ?
BCB: Entertainment budgeting is possibly the most overlooked and under budgeted item of all in weddings and other private parties. Ask yourselves about what the major things are that have the biggest impact of creating the party atmosphere and having a great time. You’ll likely find most people will say: The Band/DJ & The Booze! Add to that, it’s your DJ/Band who will be MC/Hosting (running) the reception. Therefore, nothing is more paramount than making sure you have true professionals to keep the party running smoothly.

Having said that, one of the biggest items considered and budgeted when it comes to planning a wedding is the food and other decorative pieces. This is not to diminish the importance of a phenomenal food – we’ve certainly had some amazing meals at weddings we’ve performed at. Although, consider the cost of entertainment on a level playing field with the cost of the other major expenses. For a Saturday night in summer, take into account that most wedding plated-meals will cost $70, $80, or even up to $100 per person. Then consider the cost of a great band – $6000 (in New England), dividing by an average sized wedding hosting 150 people, equals to around $40 per person for the entertainment. That’s a pretty big difference, less than half the cost in most cases… clearly visible, once the math is on the table!

Cape Cod Wedding from Forever Photography Studio

Reading love stories simply never will get old to me. And I do believe my heart will always pitter patter when I come across a story as sweet as this couple’s. That darling tale lead them down the aisle of their perfectly Cape Cod wedding, which is something I’ll simply never tire of either. Forever Photography Studio was on hand to captured every gorgeous moment, leaving us with a gallery that shouldn’t be missed. See it all here.

From the Bride… Eric and I met in 2007 while living in New York City. The first summer we were dating he did a share house in East Hampton with some friends and me, it was that summer that I fell in love with him and knew that someday he was going to be the man I would walk down the aisle to! However, between that summer and the wedding our lives took many twists and turns. I went to business school at Notre Dame then took a job in a leadership rotational program, moving every 8 months. Eric was working as a consultant so was able to move with me each time. Then in July of 2011, it was Eric’s turn to go back to school to pursue his MBA. I was doing a rotation in Chicago and he was headed to school at the University of Southern California. Just before leaving for LA, he made me the happiest girl in the world by asking me to marry him!

Like most brides, I had been waiting my whole life to plan my wedding and luckily Eric was happy to let me run with the plans. He had 2 deal breaker criteria however: his tux & the cake. He wanted to buy a nice, timeless tux and not only must there be cake, it had to be out for the whole reception. We had been to many weddings where the cake is cut while everyone is dancing and then taken away before anyone eats it, my groom wanted it available as long as possible! We compromised with a cake and also a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream bar, which was a big crowd pleaser.

I loved the idea of something outdoors with natural elements, but still elegant and classic. We stumbled upon a private estate in Truro that seemed perfect. My grandparents lived on the Cape when I was growing up so it was a special place for my family and me, and Eric loved the idea as well. At that point we moved forward planning a week long wedding celebration for our family & friends. I spent countless hours on Pinterest and wedding blogs looking for just the right décor and tablescape ideas, choosing vendors and dreaming of the big day! Wanting to have unique touches throughout without breaking the budget I looked for creative ways to cut some costs. For instance, finding a classic car to ride to and from the Chapel was not easy. So I went on the Facebook page for Cape Cod Classic Cars and posted asking if anyone was interested in working with a bride & groom on their wedding day. I got a number of responses and fell in love with one of the cars & the owner, Jeff, was great he even stayed for our cocktail hour to celebrate with us!

Most of our guests began to arrive at the Cape on Thursday and we kicked off the fun with a whale watching trip that exceeded everyone’s expectations and a dinner at Bayside Betsy’s in Provincetown (where the lobster ravioli is to die for!) Friday after the rehearsal we had another informal party with our guests. It was so fun for all the people we love from many different parts of our lives to get to know each other and mingle the days leading up to the wedding.

My favorite part of the wedding day was our vows during the ceremony. We decided to recite traditional vows but also read personal vows to one another. I was blown away by the emotion evoked hearing a unique pledge of love by the person I care about the most in this world, Eric’s words have stayed with me every day since. As I look back on it all, I can sum it up by saying that our wedding was all about love. Not only our love for one another but the love we felt from the amazing friends & family in our lives. We spent over a year planning the smallest of details, but learned that it is the things you cannot plan that make a wedding so memorable…the joy of having all the people you care about in one place, seeing friends sharing stories with parents, cousins dancing with classmates and everyone lending hands to help make the day one that we could never forget!

The Barn at Gibbet Hill from Hello Love Photography

I love First Looks.  Love them.  So, when I read that this adorable bride and groom opted on a First Look at the high school where they met, I quickly decided that they were awesome.  I mean, how amazing is it to spend the morning of your wedding frolicking around the very place you fell in love?  Pretty, pretty fabulous.  And their wedding?  All kinds of crazy gorgeous with the sunniest of yellow hues, a yummy cake from Konditor Meister and one love-filled image after another captured by Hello Love Photography. See them all in the full gallery.

From the Groom… Inspiration for the day as far as the setting and vibe, I know Kristen really wanted a wedding in a Barn in VT, but we have such big families that are local to the Boston area, we worried that we wouldn’t get the turnout we wanted. When we found Gibbet Hill, Kristen fell in love with it immediately. She loved the look of a rustic/vintage weddings and how close the venue was to our families. I was excited about how good the food was. The music chosen was a lot of vintage soul and alternative stuff for cocktail hour and dinner which added to the vintage vibe.

For our first look, Kristen had the idea of going back to Central Catholic, where we first met, which turned out great because it was a little rainy that day. There were a ton of neat little photo opportunities in the Library, the classroom, the theatre and even the locker where we used to meet before and after school.

We choose St. Patricks Cathedral, because it was where Kristens parents got married. We tried to get as many people involved in the wedding day as possible. My cousins played the music for the ceremony, we had friends and family get involved in the wedding mass.

From the Bride… When Collins and I became engaged, I knew selecting a date and planning a wedding in the middle of “wedding season” would prove to be challenging.  As a Boston-area wedding photographer, I know that the summer and fall seasons are traditionally popular among local brides and it could have been quite possible that most, if not all, warm-weather weekends for the 2012 were already taken.  One of the perks of being a wedding photographer is that I get to experience first-hand the different area venues and what they have to offer.  So it’s no wonder why we chose the Seaport Boston Hotel to be the setting for our ceremony and reception.  The weddings I have witnessed at the Seaport have been consistently flawless and the staff is just wonderful.  When we heard that September 1st was available at the Seaport, we knew it had to be our day.  Not only would it be a perfect time of year to have a wedding in Boston, but it’s also the day before Collins’ birthday.  Having an entire weekend celebration with our friends and family made perfect sense.

Having photographed hundreds of area weddings, I have seen so many beautiful and incredible wedding elements that I knew exactly what I wanted to have to create our perfect wedding day. Everything from floral design, furniture, linens, entertainment, to menu selection. Being in the industry, the word on the street was that our wedding would be the “most talked about wedding in the Boston wedding scene”! It was definitely exciting, but a little daunting, none the less!  And being a wedding photographer not behind the camera on my actual wedding day was going to be a little stressful! Selecting a photographer true to the style I shoot like also was challenging to find, hiring my friends at Click Imagery was a no-brainer.

We did a “first look” that was quite emotional for both of us.  I’m so glad we had those few moments alone together before the ceremony.  It was both exciting and personal.  What made it even better was our  adorable Boston Terrier Ollie, who looked quite dapper in his white bow tie and top hat that my mom surprised us with.  He made it down the aisle along with our two ring bearers and of course, a few chuckles from our guests, too. He most definitely stole the show! Collins and I wanted our color scheme to stay true to who we are. So selecting grays, silvers and whites with a hint of sparkle was definitely in mind when planning our wedding. The ceremony was held in the gorgeous Wintergarden Room.

My father walked me down the aisle and I just remember starting to cry, and he looked at me with the biggest smile and said “What’s there to cry about?  This is a HAPPY DAY, I love you.” Having that moment with my father was something extra special that I will always hold close to my heart. After the ceremony, the Seaport Hotel arranged for a silver Cadillac to whisk us away to the top level of the hotel. Our reception was held in the Harborview Ballroom which overlooks and has panoramic view of the Boston Harbor.

Boston Public Library Wedding from Corinna Raznikov Photography

The Boston Public Library might just be the most romantic place in the world to get married.  Either that or every bride and groom who ties the knot there really knows a thing or two about romance.  That’s because every single wedding we see from this pretty little locale hits it right out of the park in the love department with thoughtful details, gorgeous stylings and more than their fair share of meaningful moments.  And this breathtaking day planned to perfection by The Catered Affair?  Well, it just so happens to be boasting all of the above (here’s looking at you beautiful blooms from Winston Flowers), plus a Mr. and Mrs. who are the epitome of stunning.  See so much more from Corinna Raznikov in the full gallery.

Oh, and we’re not done yet.  Check out this lovely film from Long Haul Films… it’s gorgeous.

From the Bride… Before going out to dinner on our first date, Jared and I met on the corner of Boylston and Dartmouth Streets in front of the Boston Public Library, neither of us knowing that we’d be back there four years later as we vowed to spend the rest of our lives together. After Date #1, we were inseparable. Jared proposed on July 4, 2011 during an early morning walk along Walden Pond.

I’d always dreamed of getting married at the Boston Public Library, and it was easy for Jared to fall in love with the great space that captured our passion for Boston, architecture, and literature all in one venue. We chose to have our First Look on the library’s marble staircase. I stood at the top, flanked by 2 marble lions, as Jared climbed the steps to meet me. It was the moment I looked forward to most, and I couldn’t hold back the tears when I turned and saw my handsome husband for the first time.

Our ceremony took place in the Abbey Room beneath richly colored murals depicting the Quest for the Holy Grail. Jared and I created a personalized ceremony from start to finish. Our good friend served as the officiant and relatives read passages from famous writings on love, including a quote from The Alchemist. Our wedding was elegant and classic. I scoured antique shops to purchase globes, books, a typewriter, and other vintage touches to decorate the tables. Winston Flowers created beautiful centerpieces using white, peach, and pink garden roses, rich green succulents, and touches of fresh lavender. In place of a guest book, guests wrote their well wishes on library cards stamped with our wedding date. Our wedding DIY projects included designing and printing the programs, table assignments and signs, crafting lavender sachets, and assembling a colorful candy bar.

Jared and I wanted to emphasize our wedding reception’s party atmosphere, so as soon as the carrot cake had been served, the DJ turned up the music and we hit the dance floor. Our guests were on their feet for the entire evening; the energy was amazing. Jared and I loved watching our friends and family come together to celebrate, laugh, and dance the night away. As the evening drew to a close, I changed into a short strapless dress so Jared and I could make our Grand Exit. Guests waved ribbons as we left the Library and made our way to the Lenox Hotel for the after party.

Jared and I owe a huge thank you to our wedding coordinator, Erin Davies from the Catered Affair. During the year leading up to the wedding, I stayed in touch with Erin via email and monthly meetings. She helped with everything from table linen decisions to a wedding dress disaster. We are forever grateful that Erin was there to make sure that Jared and I were able to live out the wedding of our dreams.
