Willowdale Estate Summer Wedding Inspiration from Forevercandid Photography

Summer just happens to be my favorite season of them all. There is nothing more magical than those few months where the weather is warm, and the activities are plentiful – particularly in New England. This shoot from Forevercandid Photography at Willowdale Estate perfectly celebrates the fact we are still knee deep in all summer’s glory, and does so with style. Beautiful blooms from Table and Tulip, pretty paper from Wicked Bride, the gorgeous gown from Bella Sera Bridal and delicious desserts from The Topsfield Bakeshop and Cookie Creatives by Jennifer – I’m talking to you. It’s summer prettiness at its finest, and you can see it all right here.

Our inspiration was all about the journey of taking your own current milestone affair and adding it to the legacy of a New England landmark mansion’s festive history. The venue induced a historic and graceful vibe, such that we wanted to enhance it with the charm of the past, while honoring the beauty of the present. In the multi-garden property, at the one and only Willowdale Estate, built in 1901, the exquisite calmness, authentic age and whimsical beauty evoked our interest in creating an ambiance that would be cherished, evolving and sophisticated.

Garlands of greenery lined our tabletop down the center of our burlap runner to call attention to the center of the table in an understated way. Our use of garlands in our centerpiece is a great example of how you can exclusively use greenery and make a visual impact, without using an abundant amount of flowers. The green also made a fresh, current vibe while it helped cut down on some costly floral bills that couples would appreciate. The large angular glass terrarium-style lantern was used as our focal point, essentially framing the sheer beauty of nature. With the centerpiece being translucent, the complete visual setting created a dynamic feel to the tablescape. We incorporated mini plants into our escort cards, having potted succulents as a natural favor to take home. In order to add some additional volume to the table, we added the appeal of real pheasant feathers standing straight up out of each succulent place-card setting. This helped tie in the theme of nature to other parts of the table all while the gorgeousness of the feather’s pattern took the visual appeal to another level.

With the location’s stonework and outdoor splendor, we made sure to emphasize on the beauty of nature by including re-purposed wood, natural tree slabs, tons of plants, florals, and an emphasis on birds and feathers displayed in the ceremony, on the style of the bride, throughout the table top items, the stationery items, and reception spaces.

An additional important aspect to our theme of celebrating the now but cherishing the past, just like the ever evolving nature we witness every day, our goal was to communicate the loveliness of gifting our guests with treasures of history: and continuing on with them as of that moment onward. Their main favors to take home would enable them the opportunity to foster history’s timepieces, while combining its destiny into the guest’s very own life-journey. Those special favors were original vintage cameras, unique in size, color and shape, embarking in a new path in real time with each of the guests to cherish forevermore. We also wanted to show brides how easy it could be to use strategically placed items and props in their wedding in order to communicate a theme without needing to go overboard with decorations.

To add some pops of color, in lieu of celebrating love and marriage in the summer, we had adorned cookies of various shapes, sizes, colors and styles customized and placed on each plate of our place settings: mostly emphasizing LOVE for outlining the day. The color didn’t end there as we mix and matched glassware with hints of green and blue to saturate and compliment the earth’s natural color scheme, topped with vintage striped straws in a strong pink just to be fun and open with color. The menus were meant to show topnotch details by using letterpress card-stock, gold shimmery sparkled backings, soft naturally patterned bird’s feathers, happy summer text colors, and whimsy text. The menu piece tied in all of our looks into one which made the table complete. We felt that a little bit of sparkle would go a long way, and it did exactly that. To continue our gold metallic touch, we used gold silverware and gold rimmed dish chargers made of glass allowing guests to see the raw exposed natural wood of the dining table. As we felt that mixing natural elements with metallics would simply complement each other over and over again, we also mix and matched the color of our dining chairs to bring that eye-popping perspective to the table from any angle. To celebrate the current trends, our bride painted her toes and fingernails with the primary popping colors we used which were closer to an aqua and pinky peach color. This was an act of reminding couples that weddings can always be fun when still creating an elegant setting. To take that mix and match concept one more level without going over the top, we took two very neutral napkins and we mix and matched them at every other place-setting to continue with establishing dimension and acting as a finish to the table.

The dessert table was important that we extended our theme almost one notch higher, by positioning it in a romantic setting, which was the initial objective. Then hanging a birdcage over the table, adorning the cage in a romantic wild look, using solid slabs of wood to display our custom desserts mixed in with gold dessert stands, and adding an extra large focal point with the cake’s very thick tree stump, the dessert table was a finale. We had personalized desserts with the last name’s initialed on it and we continued to keep the variety of popping colors consistent To add to that mix and match feel we took the same blue and green glassware along with some metallic candle holders, flipped them upside down and used them as the actual holders, or stands, for some smaller wooden tree stumps we worked with. Florals, feathers, a sign celebrating love and a variety of greens made this sweet table a center-stage.

We want to encourage couples to have fun with details and give your guests something unique to remember about that special day. For this wedding theme, our vintage camera favors added that final touch to our story by inevitably adding a few extra layers of depth to the event: where guests were given unusual items to play with while at the table, the pieces were automatically conversation starters for the newly acquainted, and they even acted as a prop for guests to use in wedding pictures! We want to encourage couples to feel free to add meaningful aspects to their décor; even if only the two of you realize the symbolism, it will be another special something that you can share on this wonderful day. It can even simply be by incorporating a flower or plant that means something special to you as a couple. We also brought this aspect to life with our potted succulent escort cards, since succulents are plants that represent endurance and longevity, these were beautiful hidden meanings to be surrounded by. They are also undeniably adorable and are a great whimsical earthy-glam keepsake guests can take home. The other example of meaningful detail that we incorporated was that we had vintage looking postcards of our venue’s property made, and used those pieces as the RSVP cards from the formal invitation set, and the postcards are then intended to become keepsakes for the couple upon receipt from all the guests sending them back.

Fun right!? Enjoy your wedding planning!

Boston Engagement Session from Forevercandid Photography

You are going to love this couple.  And not just because they are seriously adorable (they sooo are) or because their engagement session is one that will most definitely go down in SMP history.  No, it’s more than that.  It’s a fairytale meeting in London, a friendship turned romance in Barcelona and a take-your-breath away proposal in the great city of Boston that kind of leaves you speechless.  In other words, it’s a seriously amazing combo of awesome that makes this sweet duo our couple crush of the week.  See it all captured by Forevercandid Photography in the full gallery.

From the Bride-to-Be… Adam and I met the first night of our study abroad program in London. From then on we spent almost every day together: from making dinners, to going out after class, to planning our weekend trips. And it was during one of those weekend trips (to Barcelona) that we started dating.

Five years later we are happily living in Boston, and on a sunny day in November Adam completely surprised me when he had a limo pick me up from my office. He was supposed to be on an airplane going to Kansas City for Thanksgiving, but instead he was secretly planning (in my biased opinion) the best proposal in the history of proposals! The limo brought me all over Boston where I collected pictures, treats and notes Adam hand wrote and left at our old apartments and meaningful places throughout Boston. At the last stop he had rose petals leading from the hallway through the door, and he hung up pictures of us that spelled out “Will you marry me?” When I walked in, he was on his knee to propose, and of course I said yes! The last surprise of the day was when the limo brought us to our favorite restaurant and our parents were waiting to celebrate with us.

When we started talking about our engagement pictures it was important that we took them in meaningful locations, so we decided to journey from our early relationship into our future together. We started in Boston at the Public Gardens and Beacon Hill. Along the way took pictures in front of our old apartment building, and the coffee shop we used to visit. Then we traveled up to Ipswich to take pictures at our wedding venue, the Crane Estate.  I first fell in love with the Estate when I went to a concert at the Great House. I thought it was such a breathtaking combination of the castle-like mansion, rolling hills, and ocean. At the end of our engagement weekend, I introduced Adam to the Crane Estate, and we knew it was the perfect place for our wedding.

Nantucket Wedding Round Up

This time of year, when heat waves are the norm and escaping it is always top of mind, I can’t help but dream of catching a ferry every Friday to the beautiful island of Nantucket. There is no question that it is magical, and we are lucky enough at SMP HQ to be just a hop, skip, and a jump away. And although I won’t be lining up for the fast ferry this weekend, I thought it could be fun to get lost in some Grey Lady lovely today as a little virtual vacation so to speak. Care to join?

Lenox Wedding from Ira Lippke Studios

You know what’s amazing about a Fall wedding in Massachusetts?  Quite literally, everything. Everything from the changing leaves to the warm and cozy vibe to the rich, warm hues that simply scream elegant wedding.  And when it comes down to the perfect mix of those drop-dead gorgeous ingredients, look no further than this stunner of a day planned to perfection by Destination Bride LLC. It’s what I am calling “Autumn Chic” with lush florals from Ariella Chezar and an entire gallery of lovely from Ira Lippke Studios.  Click here for every last ounce of pretty.

From the Bride..Our first decisions of where and when we would get married were no-brainers.  My parents’ home in the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts had been a favorite getaway spot for years, where we love to escape from the stresses of city life.  Fall is not only our favorite season but also one of the most beautiful and iconic times of year in New England. Getting married at home was incredibly special to us, creating such special memories at a place we could revisit as often as we wanted. Though we were set on having the wedding ceremony at home, during out first meeting with our incredible wedding planner, Lisa Light, she suggested that we check out Stonover Farm in Lenox as a possible reception site.  As soon as we set foot on the property, the whole wedding came alive in our eyes.  The big beautiful old barn could not have been a more idyllic setting.  It was rustic and yet elegant, and full of classic New England charm. Having grown up riding horses, having a big party in a barn seemed to me so fitting!

We knew we wanted iconic New England touches that would really embrace the tastes and colors of the region and season.  We picked a color palette of warm autumnal hues: rose gold, burgundy, burnt orange, and marigold. Like many brides I bought stacks of bridal magazines and homed in on great blogs like Style Me Pretty. I started compiling inspiration boards for everything: flower arrangements, invitations, reception décor, hair accessories, etc.  I had inspiration overload.  Choosing a consistent theme and style was tough because I liked so many things about very different weddings.  The design inspiration came into focus when I chose my dress, a Kenneth Pool with a skirt of delicately embroidered, art deco-inspired fan shaped beadwork.  Having always been enamored of the sophisticated elegance and iconic style of that era, I adopted the fan and the vintage deco feel as a unifying theme, combined with touches of rustic New England charm.

I wanted the Save-the-Dates and Invitations to make a real statement that conveyed the style and tone of the event, and get people excited to travel to the Berkshires for our big day, so this was a place we decided to spend a little so that the first impression our guests had was a wow factor.  Having a background in the visual art and design industry, however, I wanted to take on some DIY projects. I used a wide range of art deco inspirations, including our stunning invitation suite and iconic Deco fonts to create the programs, menus and table seating cards.  They were a really special bonding experience with my mother, who helped me every step of the way, assembling and stamping invitations, program and table seating card design tinkering and then assembling.

Joe and I both love to cook, so the food was extremely important to us, and it was another way we could bring seasonal local flavor to the day.  Being British by birth, I also wanted a little infusion of British cuisine, so we had British comfort food late night snacks like fish and chips in newspaper cones. To bring in the vintage theme, we stocked up on old fashioned candies like rock candy, chocolate cigars, caramels and salt water taffies, and found some fabulous old looking apothecary glass jars to set up an old fashioned candy station with personalized paper candy bags. Instead of traditional table numbers we wanted more character, befitting of the careful arrangements of friends and family placed at each one. We decided to name the tables after our favorite cocktails – and identified tables with a framed recipe of each beverage. We also made sure that the bar could make all of the tables’ namesake drinks!

Since the Berkshires was basically a destination wedding for virtually all of our guests (and all of my extended family lives in the UK) not everyone could make it- especially elderly relatives. Still, we wanted a real feeling of family inclusion, so we asked all our family members for pictures from their weddings.  From great grandparents to cousins and siblings-in-law, we ended up with over 30 family wedding pictures. We found inexpensive vintage looking frames and set them up in the gallery space for our cocktail hour at Stonover Farm.  All our guests loved looking through the huge collection of our family’s love stories, and welcomed our whole family – especially those who couldn’t be with us–into the celebration.

Nantucket Wedding from Soiree Floral + Zofia & Co.

I’ll never stop professing my love for Nantucket  on this little ol’ blog, and how can you possibly blame me? That little island hosts some of the prettiest parties I ever did see, and this beauty captured by Zofia & Co just upped the ante on my island love affair. With the oh-so-lovely White Elephant setting the stylish stage and beautiful blooms from Soiree Floral filling every nook and cranny, it’s practically impossible not to get a little giddy when going through this gallery. So I think it’s safe to say, I’m smitten. See why here.

From the Bride…David and I first met when I was interning in NY. I met him on my first day at work! A few months later, we went on our first date in Little Italy and stayed in touch while I went back to finish up school in Boston. After 5 years, 3 apartments and lots of laughs, David proposed at an overlook with a view of the NY skyline. It was intimate and special and very ‘us.’ A few weeks after we got engaged, we planned a vacation to relax and soak in the excitement of our engagement. I had visited Nantucket when I was younger but David had never been and I was so excited to spend a week with him on the island. We rented a cute cottage in town and spent the week exploring the beaches, roaming the cobblestone streets and fell in love with the island’s natural beauty. When we had visited the island, we felt as if time stood still.

We had originally planned on having a big, traditional wedding in NY and had booked a venue and set a date but after we had some time to think our decision through, we knew it wasn’t what we envisioned for our wedding day. We went back to the drawing board and recalled all of our fond memories from our summer trip to Nantucket. David is from Upstate NY and I am from NJ – we never planned on having a ‘destination’ wedding but we knew that Nantucket was the perfect location for our celebration with our closest family and friends.

When thinking about an overall theme for our day, I wanted to be sure that the colors we used complimented our beautiful surroundings on the island. I chose to go with a rustic country theme that would bring out the island’s natural beauty. I wanted to incorporate burlap, lace and mason jars into the theme – I envisioned a romantic, garden party wedding that didn’t have a specific “color” theme but gave our guests a feeling of warmth, love, and nature.

Cape Cod Wedding from Lauren Methia Photography

When you think of Cape Cod, you might think shoreline and sailboats, but after after getting lost in this lovely wedding from Lauren Methia Photography you might start thinking it’s one fine place to host a garden-inspired soiree too. Because it just doesn’t get prettier than this floral-filled affair, and the rain that showed up? It just made it that much more intimate. So give yourself some time to soak it all up, it’s time well spent. See it all here.

From Lauren MethiaKathryn and Thomas have been together for 10 years and said “I do” among close family and friends at the Heritage Museums & Gardens on Cape Cod in May. They currently live in San Francisco but chose to get married on the East Coast. Kathryn wanted a Cape Cod wedding but with a garden romance feel rather than the nautical Cape Cod theme. The Heritage Museum & Gardens was a perfect choice because of its lush gardens and greenery. Unfortunately the sun didn’t make an appearance on their wedding day so the ceremony was moved from the gardens to the reception tent. The rain let-up just in time for us to sneak outside for some photos before dark.  The rain actually ended up adding to the romantic feel they were going for. The cocktail hour was held inside the Heritage Museum filled with antique cars making for a really unique wedding venue. Kathryn wore a beautiful Carolina Herrera gown and Thomas wore a Burberry suit. Also, the bridesmaids were allowed to choose their own dress and color.

Chatham Bars Inn Wedding from Michael Barnholdt Photography

Yesterday we gave you a peek into this couple’s perfectly New England rehearsal dinner, and today we get to devour every last detail of their dream Cape Cod day. And boy is it a dream day. Hosted at none other than the gorgeous Chatham Bars Inn, it’s seaside chic from start to finish. So ladies and gents looking to plan such a fête – you can thank Michael Barnholdt Photography for this gorgeous gallery of images. See them all here.

And just when you think it can’t get prettier, Brighter Lights Media steps in with their film…

From the Bride…Before my fiance even proposed he had booked the wedding location with my parents and had a date set. Most brides would not be so understanding but to get married anywhere other than Chatham Bars Inn on Cape Cod felt strange and we knew the summer dates would fill up fast. He had to book the date a year in advance, and the engagement was not planned for a few more weeks. After a few quick calls, asking my dad for permission, and a ring in hand Clint proposed in Napa Valley in October 2011 at Groth Vineyards, and the date was set we would be married August, 11th, 2012.

My husband grew up in Chatham, playing on Hardings beach, eating lunch at the Squire, and attending elementary school down the street. As we started dating in college we began summering in the cape every August together with his family and I fell in love with him as well as the relaxing feeling of being so close to the ocean. We had always envisioned a wedding at the cape but the moment ” I knew” I want to marry this man, was while sitting in the exact white chairs pictured here. Looking out at the Atlantic Ocean, glass of champagne in hand and a fresh summer breeze did it for me. After 5 summers in Chatham, I could not wait to plan our wedding here and share it with friends and family who would travel from all over the country and the world. It was important to my fiance and I that we share what we love about the cape with our friends and family and spend as much time leading up to the wedding with those visiting for the first time. We wanted a wedding as elegant as the historic Chatham Bars Inn but we also wanted to enjoy the smell of the salt water and to stick of feet in the sand.

We were living in Minneapolis, MN while planning a wedding from a far but with the wonderful help of the CBI staff and daily calls to vendors, we managed to pull of an incredibly special, intimate and lovely summer cape wedding. I wanted natural colors; local hydrangeas, and soft ivory’s. The inspiration for the entire day were the hydrangeas on the property of Chatham Bars Inn, and those line almost every house in Chatham. Big, overflowing bundles of soft flowers, a classic Amsale ivory dress and similar blush Amsale bridesmaid dresses made for the light and muted color scheme I had imagined. Michael Barnholdt, our photographer, traveled from Minneapolis to Chatham to capture our day, and was amazed at the beauty of the cape. I remember Michael saying “pretend I am not here unless I ask you to look my direction,” and I believe that is the reason we have such natural photographs. When I look back I think “wow, that really looks like us” and that was our goal the entire time. I wanted this wedding to be a time to celebrate the next chapter of our lives but also to reflect our relationship and upbringing.

Many of the small decorations and details were purchased on Etsy and sent to my mother-in-laws home in Boston. Without ever seeing most of them first hand, the week before the wedding allowed us to get organized and take a look at everything we had ordered all year long. One of my favorite purchases were the cards that gusts could sign instead of a traditional guest book. The vintage cards read “Marriage is an adventure, what should we add to our bucket list.” This idea produced so many fun ideas for our lives ahead of us, and our love for travel.

A few special touches that I wanted to incorporate into the day were a garter made from the lace of my mom’s wedding dress, 30 years earlier. My late grandmother’s wedding ring on my right hand, my maiden name initials sewn into my dress as my “something blue”, hand made jewelry and and a little surprise for the groom. I knew Clint would be nervous with all eyes on him as the bridal procession began so I had a wooden sign made that our ring bearer, his nephew would carry down the isle. The sign read “Uncle Clint here comes your girl,” hoping this would bring a huge grin and relax him just a bit before I made my walk down the isle. The bridal party confirmed, this did the trick. One moment that I will never forget is as I was about to walk down the isle, about hundred hotel patrons were gathered to watch the ceremony, something I had also done in summer’s past. As we were lining up out of view from our guests, a little girl yelled to me ” good luck Cinderella.” and my bridesmaids, dad and myself began to tear up. I had always loved the movie Cinderella growing up, wishing to be a princess every day of my child hood, and at that moment I really did feel like a princess. We also used an old sailing tradition to tie a sailor’s knot as a symbol of our love and commitment, and wrote our own vows that we shared out loud to one and other during the ceremony. This was the most meaningful part of the day for both of us.

One of the most important a entertainment aspects of the wedding to us was the band. We knew we wanted live music, and people up dancing every moment of the evening. This was achieved by the talent and energy of Stardust Band and left many guests saying that is not only the best wedding band I have heard, that is one of the best bands I have ever heard live. We danced all night long, including special songs from Chi Omega sorority sisters, our Alma Mater, and a sparkler exit to the after party as we left the beach.

I get butterflies every time I think back to this special day and will forever cherish that special celebration. For us the smell, sound and gorgeous beaches of Cape Cod can not be matched anywhere in the world. For my husband it is childhood home, for our families is was quality time together and for our friends it was a first but hopefully not the last trip out East.

So hosting your wedding weekend during this fabulous time is almost a no brainer. And when you do so with a lovely nautical flair, that’s when we get giddy. So soak up some of this rehearsal dinner sweetness snapped up by Michael Barnholdt Photography today in the full gallery – and stay tune tomorrow for this couple’s wedding!

From the Bride…What better way to greet our guests to Cape Cod than a traditional lobster dinner on the beach? My husband grew up on Cape Cod and spent all year running around the beach and enjoying the summer breeze. As we planned a destination wedding in Chatham, MA we wanted to plan an equally fun groom’s dinner to kick off the weekend and greet our guests. A majority of our guests were traveling from all over the country and some across the globe to make it to our wedding celebration, so we had to be sure to spend as much time with them as possible. Everyone who was invited to the wedding was also invited to the Groom’s dinner, so we hosted about 100 guests that evening.

We choose this elegant yet modern beach club because it was a favorite childhood spot for my husband to visit with his own sailboat and tie up right on the doc pictured here. In the 1980’s it was Thompson’s Clam Bar and now has been completely remodeled to an event space. We had a tent over the patio with planned lawn bowling and bocce ball but with a wicked storm on the way, we spent the rest of the evening in door indulging the the finest seafood around. Everything from Lobsters, clam chowder, clams and corn on the cob. We served local beer, and Groth white wine and appetizers as guests mingled at cocktail hour in the tent and then headed to the harbor dining rooms, with windows facing the Nantucket Sound.

Introducing the bridal party to family friends and reuniting college friends were so of the best moments of the night and brought the anticipation of the wedding day to an emotional high we will never forget. We were surrounded by every person that loved us, supported us and got us to the point we were at today, as we entered into the next chapter of our lives. Groomsman and ushers received the gifts from the Groom followed by toasts from the Groom’s mother and step father.

Luckily for our guests Clint’s step dad is a Lobster expert and gave a detail step by step demonstration for our gusts to crack, identify the gender of each lobster and make sure to eat every last piece of meat from head to claw. With a bunch of Midwesterners in the room, it was fun to tackle a lobster for the first time. For first timers, we had customized instructions to follow along. Each guest also had a nautical flag place card holder, that identified them at certain tables. We tried to mix up the groom’s and brides side as much as possible and have our guests mingle with one and other. All of the detail credit can be given to my mother in law who hand made each table assignment flag, built each sale boat on the tables and surprised guests with customized bibs with our names and wedding date on them. All within the red, blue and yellow nautical theme.

At the end of the evening guests boarded the shuttle back to Chatham and I set sights on my comfortable hotel bed for the night, preparing for the morning. We wanted all guests to feel welcome, enjoy cape cod and have a real taste of New England in mind when the left with a little excitement of a plate full of Lobster.

From the Bride… Matt and I knew from the get go that we really wanted to have a comfortable, laid back wedding that was spread out over many days. We found The Pastures after a bit of looking and knew it was the perfect place. We were able to have full creative control, be there from Wednesday to Sunday and have our whole family stay in the house with us! The house was a huge inspiration for us. It is 2 huge old dairy barns converted into the coolest mid-century modern home complete with yoga studio, sculpture gallery, sauna, library and pottery studio. We chose jade plants and succulents to mimic the plants that already existed in the house. The house is so mod and our color palette was an homage to it. I dislike limiting myself to only 2 or 3 colors, and instead used about 7 different colors that all worked beautifully together including coral, turquoise, grey, peacock and chartreuse.

Working in the world of music and production we are very lucky to have incredibly talented friends who were very generous and helpful. The invitations and website were heavily influenced by late 50’s early 1960’s design and were so much fun to create. They were bright and colorful, really setting the tone that this was going to be a serious party!

The weekend ended up being even better than we could have imagined with so many wonderful memories and surprises. The biggest shocker? My family planned a flashmob with 100 guests that was spectacular!

It was a very hot couple of days and the beautiful saltwater pool was in constant use, including during our wedding speeches. It was so cute seeing our 8 nieces and nephews swimming around like little fish while our dads gave their heart felt speeches. It was a true representation of how relaxed the weekend was. The whole thing was really quite perfect.

From the Bride… If I had to wrap up our wedding in one word, ‘personal’ would be it. Our generous and amazingly talented group of family and friends had a hand in nearly every part of the process. My husband’s uncle even married us! The weekend’s events all took place in our beloved home of Cambridge, Massachusetts, culminating in the reception– held inside the Cambridge Boat Club, a landmark we’ve come to know through our frequent jogs along the Charles River. The night didn’t go totally smoothly… my groom got a sudden migraine and had to leave our reception… but our guests rallied around us with love and support. He returned and slowly but surely came back to life and we felt humbled by the reminder that all this wedding ‘stuff’ is secondary to the commitment being honored and celebrated. Thanks to Geneve, you’d think it all went off without a hitch!

Boston Cyclorama Wedding from Kelly Dillon Photography + Brighter Lights Media

I love this Bride and Groom and I’ve never met them. How is that possible, you ask? Well it’s simple. I took one look at their beautiful Boston wedding at the Cyclorama captured by Kelly Dillon Photography, and then I read their descriptions. Yes with an s. They both sent in their viewpoints of the day (complete with the proposal story – a must read), and that always turns my heart into mush. Then I spent some time with their sweet video from Brighter Lights Media, and it immediately turned into a full-on love affair with these two. After devouring all this pretty, it’s simply impossible to avoid. See why here.

And you simply cannot miss this video from Brighter Lights Media

From the Groom… The Proposal. My future wife had no idea what was going on. We teased about the idea of getting married very early into our relationship. I knew she was the one and I knew that when I proposed, I wanted to do something she would never forget…

The previous year I had been talking to her about going to Hawaii during her spring break. My plan was to plant the seed of the idea, and then at the last minute, to unexpectedly cancel out. I was going to encourage her to go ahead and take a girls-only trip, without me. I followed through with this plan, printing out a fake itinerary for China– telling her that I had a last minute work-thing in China! She reluctantly agreed to go ahead and go to Hawaii with the girls. Unknown to her, a couple of my friends and I flew out two days earlier, scoped out ‘proposal spots’ and purchased items to decorate the private dining room I selected. We set up video cameras and made arrangements with the staff to record the surprise proposal.

I have to say it didn’t go as smoothly as I had hoped – and I experienced a few minor panic attacks during the pre-proposal hours. But soon the girls were seated at the table, preparing to watch a fake “required video presentation” as  part of a supposed Groupon deal.  As the video began, Christina Perri’s soundtrack to A Thousand Years began to play– and my fiancee’s face came on the screen. I had created a four minute video telling her how much I love her and… still pretending that I was in China… told her to enjoy the week in Hawaii. As soon as the video was over, she reached for her phone to call me. It was then that my friends and I walked in the door. She was SO surprised she literally fell off her chair! I hadn’t prepared a speech, but in the end, I just said, “Marlana, will you marry me?” She very quickly said, “Yes!”and we proceeded to enjoy a wonderful celebration dinner with our friends… followed by a relaxing week in Oahu and the Big Island. At one point, she asked me if I had to go back to China. She didn’t quite understand that part of it was all a ruse…

From the Bride… Phong and I had known each other for many years throughout college. He attended Northeastern University and I went to Simmons College — so we were a hop, skip and a jump away from each other. We ran in the same circles and were both from the Boston area. However, when we graduated we were still merely acquaintances. I went out of state for graduate school and it wasn’t until my Christmas break back home when things began to heat up. On New Year’s Eve, 2011, we shared our first New Year’s Kiss at midnight. And as they say, the rest is history!

After the totally unexpected surprise Hawaiian proposal, we planned our wedding in just six months! Phong took care of a lot of the ground work, and for that I am blessed. I was busy at school so I couldn’t be as involved as many other brides are. Our whole theme in planning and designing our wedding was to create an event that we would enjoy coming to as guests. We love hosting house parties and taking care of our friends and family and this wasn’t going to be any different. There were 3 things that were non-negotiable for us: a modern city wedding look, someplace that allowed outside catering, and and an open bar. We love Chinese family-style dinners but wanted a modern atmosphere for our wedding. And that is how we found the Cyclorama as our venue. It allowed everything we wanted and more. I loved the industrial look of the building from the brick flooring to the glass ceilings and overhead truss. It was so big, so open, and so unique. It just screamed at us, “Blank Canvas.”

I knew what I wanted, but the only way I could convey it to Phong was by e-mailing him loads of photos and links from Pinterest and blogs that I loved. He wasn’t thrilled about sifting through all the e-mails, but he did a wonderful job trying to make logistical decisions without me, and still incorporate what I was envisioning. The color scheme of our wedding was silver, white, and varying shades of purple. Phong captured that well with the silver chiavari chairs, white cushions and lounge furniture, silver table clothes, and gorgeous uplighting. Alex Bombard at Advanced Lighting and Production Services was also particularly helpful in translating my vision into real life! Luckily, we also have talented family and friends that helped us. My aunt is a florist and she helped us so much in making ALL of my floral design dreams come true from my lovely orchid bouquet to the ceremony décor.

The ceremony was kept short just like we would like it when attending weddings, the cocktail hour was a time for us to pose and take pictures with our guests, and the reception was a blast with lots of speeches, food, drinks, and dancing. We had never danced with our parents before, but on this special day we did. Even though we felt a little awkward at first, it’s a memory I wouldn’t trade for the world.

We had many personal touches around the venue. Our cake topper was customized to have our faces on a married bobble-head couple. The groom on the cake topper had a red “S” under his shirt. {My husband’s nickname in his fraternity is Superman so it was perfect.} Since my husband also worked for Keurig, we thought it would be perfect to have a Hot Beverage Bar in lieu of a desert bar. It was a huge hit. We added homemade heart shaped sugar cubes, heart shaped marshmallows, crushed Andes mints, and many other toppings I thought would be both delicious and cute.

We love kettle corn as a snack, so for our escort cards, we individually wrapped kettle corn in organza bags, tied on tags with our engagement picture, and added tags with the guest name and seating location. We named half of the tables after Marvel Universe characters (which Phong loves), and the other half after Johnny Depp movie characters (which I love). Our Photo Booth props included super-hero props to go along with this ‘theme’.

After attending many weddings where the bride and groom just walk into the reception space, Phong decided that he wanted us to make a grand entrance! We dressed up as Batman and Batgirl and had Kevin Garnet scream (just like at the TD Garden)! Once KG got everyone hyped up, the curtain dropped with a loud boom, the lights shined through and started to swirl, and the wedding party fired off confetti canons that rained down on us as we made our way from behind the dropped curtain to the dance floor to the beat of “In My Mind.” (You can see this in the wedding film!) Though it wasn’t my ideal entrance, it was fun and that is what weddings should be all about! Plus– my husband had put so much love into planning our wedding, I wanted him to enjoy this moment! I was never the type to dream of my wedding as a little girl but this wedding that my husband planned for us surpassed anything that I could ever imagine. Everything was beautiful. I wish it could have lasted forever. [dotted]

Gibbet Hill Wedding from White Loft Studio

In the unofficial Heidi fan club, we solidly rank as number one. Why? Because nothing gets our giddies going like a White Loft Studio wedding . And this Gibbet Hill affair is no exception. Layered with femininity and laced up in love, it’s an affair that’ll have your heart from the very get-go; I can promise you that. Petal Floral Design crafted up every perfect moment and there’s only one thing to expect in the full gallery — endless pretty.

From the Bride…We both love the time of year, a fusion of the warmth of late summer and the essence of fall. Every part of the ceremony was so special, the beautiful flowers and decoration, the horns, my unveiling from the castle tower to the walk down and around with my father into the castle, the personal handwritten ceremony by a close friend, and the warm uniting of our families in front of a special group of family and friends all commenced a lovely union. We are who we are…so much of the wedding style and décor was just like us! Tim and I are very simple and classic.  From our home to our wedding venue the ambience shares basic rustic and earthy tones.  We even used some of our home décor create the atmosphere! With the help of Becca, we created a “well” theme that carried through the scape of the wedding.   The programs scripted “love well” across the top; specialty cocktails served in a mason jar were tied with a twine label that scrolled “drink well”; dining silver was also wrapped in twine that offered an “eat well” message; The Van Buren Boys played beneath a gold glitter tapestry of “dance well”; a “sit well” lettered burlap sign draped above the seating arrangement; and our sweetheart table chairs were adorned with too with a burlap sign lettered “live well!”

Massachusetts Farm Wedding from Anna Sawin Photography

Every day I find a new reason to love Massachusetts weddings, from the breathtaking settings to the sweet duos that grace our pages with their uber-stylish faces.  And clocking in at number 595 (I’m estimating) is this darling affair from the ever-talented Anna Sawin Photography.  An affair, mind you, that happens to boast all of the aforementioned, plus sweet rustic details and a whole lot of happy.  It’s a combo that can’t be beat, really, and you can see it all in the full gallery.

From Anna SawinIf music can be a detail, then this was the most detail-rich wedding I’ve ever attended! Music truly filled the day, from family music rehearsals in the morning, professional choral recitals by the family, piano accompaniment by family and friends and informal song. Abby, a soprano opera singer, and Adam were married at Quonquont Farm in Whately, Massachusetts last August. They traveled from their west coast home to bring the wedding to the home locale of Abby’s elderly grandmother. The couple was serenaded at the ceremony with a rich choral harmony provided by her mother and father, as well as countless other friends and relatives, and professionally conducted by her brother.

Abby and Adam celebrated the height of the summer harvest with locally sourced and prepared foods from Whately farms, including pies made from the freshly picked, summer-ripe peaches of Quonquont Farm. Their afternoon nuptials were as warm, lovely and lingering as the summer day itself.

From Caroline TalbotAlly and Ryan decided on an intimate wedding in Boston’s North End at Mamma Maria Restaurant. It was a true union of two families, with most of the guests meeting for the first time. Keeping their decor simple and romantic, with quaint bicycle details, this event captured the classic romantic charm that no other city can offer. The pink and orange flowers popped against the spring air, and the joy shared by all of their friends and family was palpable!

Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary Wedding from Joyelle West Photography

Show me an intimate garden wedding, and I’ll show you one happy blogger. It’s always been the case. To me, they just ooze romance and meaning. So when this pretty from Joyelle West landed in my lap, I was basically in wedding heaven. And when you sprinkle gorgeous florals from Petalena throughout the entire day? That’s when I simply have to surrender to the pretty. Which is precisely what I plan to do right here, in the full gallery of images.

From Joyelle WestSmall weddings are just so intimate and lovely, and this 25-person affair was no exception. Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary, which is apart of the Mass Audubon Society, is a small nature preserve with forest and trails, a historic mansion, and a beautiful formal garden. The bride wanted a true garden wedding, which is a rarity for New England, and the couple and guests dined amongst trees and hanging lanterns. Petalena accented the natural elements of the space with lush arrangements, and used ribbons to hang roses and placecards from the trees. It was a truly magical summer evening in an enchanting garden.

Thompson Island, Massachusetts Wedding from Paper Antler Photography

It should be illegal to live in the city of Boston and never ever have heard or stepped foot on Thompson Island. Yet here I am; oblivious city dweller marveling over the gorgeousness of this harbor island wedding a mere hop, skip and a jump from my home. And the philosophy behind this celebration is something we can definitely get behind. Instead of DIY, it’s a Do It Together kind of affair – community built and wholeheartedly celebrated. Have a look at all the pretty captured by Paper Antler with even more right here in the full gallery.

From the Bride…Hugh and I met in San Francisco but had recently relocated back to the Boston area where we both grew up. When it came to planning the wedding it was important to us to stay local in every sense so community became our focus and inspiration for our wedding weekend. I had grandiose DIY intentions, but quickly realized my wants, ideas, and pinterest boards were no match for the reality of my skill level and lack of free time. We recognized how important it was to make everything a team effort, or DIT (do it together), if you will. We turned to talented friends, family and our community for creative guidance and support.

Our venues for a Friday night cocktail party, Artist For Hummanity EpiCenter, and for the big soiree, Thompson Island Outward Bound, both had missions that aligned with our values, additionally both are fabulous settings! We were also thrilled that the timing worked in our favor to be a part of the Fifty Nifty, Paper Antler’s impressive 2012 adventure. We enlisted an incredibly talented and dear friend, Elayna Feltus, of Brick and Petals, to help us organize and stay on task (this is a must for future brides). She located an up and coming local designer, Luke Aaron, who made my dress, which I did fall in love with! Everything else, from invites to guestbook to bowties, was done by friends and family. The one DIY project we stuck with from the beginning was homebrew! Hugh is a talented brewer and together we brewed seven types of beer to fill 250 bottles of beer and used them as escort cards. We never felt closer as a couple, or more loved and grateful to have such a large supportive network of family and friends to pull off what was a magical weekend.

Martha’s Vineyard Wedding from Filley Photography

Any wedding where the motto happens to be Bowties Encouraged, Dancing Shoes Required automatically gets filed under parties I wish I could have gone to. It’s a theme I can totally get behind, and when you add the fact that this pretty party took place on Martha’s Vineyard, well you can just consider me smitten. It’s was a party planned to perfection by ZBR Events (complete with late night donuts from Back Door Donut), and even though I wasn’t able to be there in person, I am sure glad we all have the images from Jocelyn Filley Photography to attend this fabulous purple-infused party virtually. Do so here.

From the Bride… Blake and I met on our very first day of college. A few months into freshman year, we began dating and have been together ever since. As a result, when we got engaged over 8 years later it was certainly not a surprise to any of our friends. We decided we wanted our wedding to be a party to celebrate the love and support of our friends and family. From the very beginning, we knew we wanted to get married on Martha’s Vineyard. My family had gone on vacation there and Blake had spent time in the chilly springs biking around with his brothers. After college, in an attempt to avoid the real world, we both got jobs on Martha’s Vineyard- he at a golf course and I at a clothing store and art gallery. We made just enough money to cover the rent of a room in someone’s house and had the time of our lives. To us Martha’s Vineyard is the happiest place on earth and we wanted an opportunity to share it with all of our friends.

The most important thing in choosing the Vineyard was that the wedding reflected what we loved about the island. We wanted island vendors and the opportunity to show people all of our favorite places and things. On Friday night we held a “welcome pig roast”for all of our guests at Sailing Camp Park near Oak Bluffs with a delicious pig raised on the island from Local Smoke. On Saturday morning, we encouraged our guests to “take the plunge with the groom” and go swimming in Menemsha- which over 40 of them did. We helped folks get around the island and rent houses for additional days so they could fall in love with it, just as we had.

When it came to the wedding, we knew that there were three things that mattered- friends, food, and an amazing band. We were lucky to work with Mike Benjamin who has been a staple on the island for years. He played an acoustic version of “Stand by Me” for the processional and we danced down the aisle to “Higher and Higher” on the way out. He even learned and beautifully performed Ben Folds’ “The Luckiest” for our first dance. The Beach Plum Inn provided outstanding food and helped us accommodate some of our other favorite island snacks- skewers of marinated chicken from Shiretown Meats, pies from Morning Glory Farms, and late night donuts from Back Door Donuts.

Our dress code was “Bowties Encouraged – Dancing Shoes Required,” as an homage to both of our fathers who wear bowties frequently. We found great gingham bowties on Etsy for the bridal party and even included instructions for how to tie a bowtie on our website. Almost all of our male guests ended up wearing one! We went with shades of purple (rather than two colors) as our color scheme and it helped everything look unified, vintage, and not too matchy. The bridesmaids picked their own dresses from J. Crew in purple and my maid of honor was in spiced wine. I gave each bridesmaid a necklace or bracelet depending on their dress and a handkerchief for “happy tears”- it was a good thing I bought one for myself too since I certainly needed it during the ceremony! Blake’s suit carried our shades of purple color scheme with a glen plaid and light purple window pane. I fell head over heels in love with my lace dress the first time I put it on. My mother’s wedding dress was also lace and I tied a small piece of the fabric around my bouquet as a tribute to her. I used my grandmother’s, her mother’s, beaded clutch from the 1940’s which meant a lot that I could include something of hers, even though we never met.

We wanted the feel of the wedding to be rustic but elegant. Zoé of ZBR Events was a magician and worked to coordinate all of our vendors and requests. She could not have been more spectacular. We worked with Big Sky Tents to have hanging lanterns in the upper tent and bulb lights for dancing. They set up large farm tables and we created runners out of lanterns, candles and spectacular flowers from Krishana Collins. One of the most memorable moments from the weekend was going with Krishana into the fields to pick the flowers used in the wedding- it meant so much to us that they were grown only a few miles from our ceremony and made our decorations blend in seamlessly with the surroundings. She also created lovely herb boutonnieres for the men and stunning bouquets for me and my bridesmaids. Since we were getting married outside at a lighthouse, we were aware of the chance it could rain so we bought umbrellas and rainboots for the wedding party just in case. Luckily, the weather cleared up right before the ceremony and we all stayed dry (and in our anticipated apparel).

Overall, we used many vendors to get the exact look that we wanted as well as save a few dollars by shopping around. To that end, we used the amazing artwork and images created by Mr.Boddington for our invitations on our welcome letter, for stamps on programs and favors, our welcome bags, and the cups that we had at the pig roast. I made 120 soy lavender candles in our kitchen (which was a bit more work than expected) but made me so happy to use them as both favors and place cards. Since we had kraft paper envelopes with white calligraphy for the invites, we continued with kraft paper accents for the reception. Nellie Barker of Whoa Nellie Press did spectacular calligraphy and even humored our desire to put nicknames on all of the place tags- which made everything feel a bit more personal. She also designed the inside of our programs and the wedding party graciously helped assemble them using stamps and ribbon a few nights before the wedding. We used Big Sky’s mismatched plates for the cake and cake stands I hunted down on Ebay to create a vintage feel.

The best piece of advice we got was to take a step back at some point in the night and take the whole scene in. Our wedding was the most wonderful day of our lives. It is humbling to look around a party and realize that everyone has travelled so far just to celebrate with you. While we remember that moment vividly, we never would have such amazing memories if it were not for Jocelyn Filley and her unbelievable photography. The whole day feels like a dream and her photography makes it look like a spectacular one. From the ceremony, to photos on the docks in Menemsha, to the reception, dancing, and late-night sparklers, we had one giant party. We tell everyone who asks- we would do it all again tomorrow!
