Salem Waterfront Wedding

Most Massachusites know that Salem is SO much more than the witches we learned about in grade school. It’s boating and sunsets and culture all wrapped up into one incredible little town. And when you layer in a beautiful wedding – with subtle nautical details, a couple that is all style and photos from Zac Wolf – onto the already lovely backdrop, well Salem simply gets even more lovely. Click here for more!

From the bride..My husband Anthony and I didn’t have a set place we wanted to have our wedding. Once we started touring venues, we decided that having an outdoor wedding on the water in historical Salem, MA made the most sense for us. We both love nautical style and historic New England, so Salem was the perfect spot for our wedding.

We didn’t really have a wedding theme, but we tried to include dots, stripes, and anchors into as many details as we could, without over doing it. From the striped ribbons on the flowers, to the dotted stripes on our invitations, to the anchor socks the groomsmen wore, we successfully showcased our love for nautical style. The Salem Waterfront Hotel and Marina was a perfect venue to show off these details. We were fortunate to have the first outdoor wedding at the venue and we’re so glad we got to take advantage of the beautiful backdrop of the wharf on our big day.

We can’t say enough about Zac Wolf’s photos from our wedding day. We wanted him to capture our day from a candid point of view that showed our genuine reactions throughout the day rather than just having traditionally posed photos. He did exactly that and gave us some unbelievable images that we’ll have forever to look back and remember our special day.

After months of planning our wedding day was beautiful. The ceremony was short, but incorporated some of our favorite music and the reception was a great party. We spent the whole night on the dance floor with our families and friends, which was exactly how we wanted to celebrate becoming Mr. and Mrs.

Boston Inspiration Shoot at 9ofs

When prettiness dreamt up by some of our favorite vendors lands in our lap, we get just a tad bit excited. So this Boston chic shoot at 9ofs from Petal Floral DesignTrue Event and Paper Moss has us doing a serious happy dance. Captured by Hello Love Photography every single image sitting in this gallery is gorgeous and then some. See it all here.

From 9ofsOpened in 2012, 9OFS is a spectacular indoor/outdoor event space located in the heart of Boston’s financial district. The newly-renovated open-air garden, complemented by a reflection pool, provides a unique perspective of the Boston skyline and calm contrast to the bustling energy of the city below. The interior space of 9OFS is modern and sleek, offering an attractive backdrop for any event.

9OFS is located on the ninth floor of One Federal Street in Boston and is only steps away from the newly constructed Boston Waterfront, Faneuil Hall Marketplace and many other attractions. It also has excellent accessibility to all of the major highways and public transportation.

Visitors can overlook and be inspired by the dynamic daytime cityscape, dramatic sunsets and nighttime sparkle of city life. With a flexible layout and awe-inspiring views, the possibilities for 9OFS are limitless.

From True Event…For the design we wanted the table to feel modern and chic yet elegant and timeless. Set on the rooftop in downtown Boston this new venue created the perfect backdrop for our city shoot. We used a palette of deep plums, peaches, lilac and creamy whites and gold and silver. Using mirrored chargers and lucite chairs we brought in a few modern details and combined them with the mix of metallics, fine china, glassware and copper flatware to create an elegant tablescape.

From Paper Moss…We wanted the paper goods to incorporate some of our absolute favorite stationery trends of late, but with a timeless feel. Working with Larry Orlando Calligraphy, we paired bold hand lettering with a romantic gold foil printed emblem and gold painted edges. This pairing resulted in a modern, yet playful elegance. For the “day of” accessories, we played off of mixed typography & patterns… and we just couldn’t resist using round menus to make the table settings pop!

Colorful DIY Wedding

There’s a reason we love colorful DIY weddings, and that reason is simple: they are awesome.  Especially when those DIY details are wrapped up in a gorgeous Overbrook House setting with a sweet whimsical vibe, yummy treats from Crema Cafe (the bride!) and one pair of crazy cool green shoes.  See it all captured by Zac Wolf in the here.

From Zac Wolf Photography… Jake, Gwen and their families spent the week preparing for their Overbrook House wedding, decorating and filling the venue with the gorgeous details. Their families came in from the midwest and filled the venue with love, delicious treats from Gwen’s bakery Creama Cafe, and amazing homemade details.

Vintage Inspiration Shoot

Give me an inspiration shoot with rich gold and pink hues and you’ll see one very happy lady.  But add in one perfect detail after another from D.S.MeeBee Custom Event Design and Planning, an adorable real life duo and an entire gallery of lovely from Sam Haddix and, well… you just made my Wednesday.  See it all right here.

D.S.MeeBee Custom Event Design and Planning is a company that designs and creates custom weddings based on the unique qualities of the bride and groom. This shoot was designed and styled by Danielle from D.S.MeeBee. All of the wedding decor was handmade with love by Danielle. Every detail of this shoot is representative of the bride and groom in the photos. The cameos that are in the design of the shoot throughout are the bride and groom’s profiles. The custom cake toppers are made to look like the bride and groom and the custom base also was made to look like the life size frame that was used as a photo prop. The bouquet was made with fabric petals, vintage buttons, and broaches. The pink petals were made from the hems of the bridesmaids dress and the white petals were made from scraps from the bride’s mother’s wedding dress. The bride’s mother had passed away when she was 12 and it was important to her to have things that reminded her of her mother throughout her wedding. The bride’s mother’s wedding dress had been damaged from not being preserved correctly so Danielle from D.S.MeeBee used parts of the dress as the petals of the bouquet. The use of a hand painted peony in the menus, invitations, escort table, and signage was also in remembrance of the bride’s mother who always loved peonies.

Nantucket Yacht Club Wedding

Dawn at Soiree Floral is basically a floral genius: we all know that.  But pair her insane talents with the camera expertise of Zofia & Co. and it’s a one-two knockout of pure awesome set against the breathtaking setting also known as the Nantucket Yacht Club.  In other words, this is a wedding that will elicit the most swoon-worthy of reactions, and you can see it all in the full gallery.

And a sweet film from September Productions?  Yes, please.

From the Bride… Paul and I met four years ago at a party at my apartment for a mutual friends birthday. Surprisingly, our paths had never crossed until that night even though we both often hung out with the same people. We hit it off instantly. We spent the entire night talking, went on our first official date a week later, and the rest is history.

It wasn’t long before I wanted to introduce Paul to my favorite place in the world, Nantucket. I had grown up spending summers on Nantucket, and it only took one visit for Paul to fall in love with the island as much as I had. From then on, any chance we had, we would make the trip from New York, even if only for a day or two.

On a random Wednesday in January of 2012, Paul called me at work and asked me if I wanted to go to dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in downtown Manhattan, Stanton Social. I, of course, said yes. He picked me up in a cab and we headed to the restaurant. On the way, the cab stopped at a red light at the corner of Houston and Elizabeth Streets, right across from old apartment where we had first met. Paul immediately jumped out of the cab and told me to get out and walk with him from there to dinner. Confused, I said no; it was freezing outside, it was far from the restaurant and I was in heels! But undeterred, Paul continued to jog across the street. When I begrudgingly followed him to where he had stopped at the front of my old apartment building Paul got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Laughing, crying, and in complete shock I, of course, said yes.

When we started thinking about what sort of wedding we wanted we both quickly agreed that the place we really wanted to get married was on Nantucket. We tried to be open-minded to places in New York and New Jersey that would be closer to home, but none felt as perfect as when we walked into the Nantucket Yacht Club on a cold February day when we were on the island looking at venue options. We instantly knew that was where we were going to get married. The Nantucket Yacht Club embodied the classic Nantucket feel, but was the ideal blank canvas which would allow us to add in all the unique details that would make it our wedding. The people at the Yacht club were a dream to work with. They were so helpful and professional throughout the planning process up to and including the day of the wedding.

After the venue was booked it was time to start thinking about all the details and how the entire wedding weekend would unfold. Growing up in New York and New Jersey we had very few friends or family who had ever made the trip to Nantucket, so it was important to us that everyone coming to the wedding understand why we love this island so much. We wanted our wedding to have a bit of a traditional Nantucket feel, but with intricate details and surprises that were unique to Paul and me.

Being a creative person, from the moment we finalized the location the ideas started streaming in as to how we would make it our wedding. We first hired Nicole Wheldan, a wedding planner with Unique Nantucket Events. She was so helpful throughout the entire planning process and kept us calm whenever we needed it. Lucky for us, Nicole shares an office space with Zofia and Mark of Zofia & Co. From the minute we walked into their office and saw the incredible photographs hanging we knew we wanted to have them photograph our wedding. They have an amazing talent for capturing the actual emotion and moment in a picture. Our engagement session with Zofia was when we first experienced their talent. We took pictures in areas all over Nantucket and also got the ones we needed for our special save the date card. It consisted of four separate photographs of us in various poses holding up a different sign in each, reading: save, the, date, 6-15-2013. It was perfect and kicked off the unique feeling we wanted for the entire wedding: classic, fun, loving and full of surprises. The save the date and so many other custom details were made by the very talented Nico and Lala. They tailored everything so beautifully to reflect us and the feel of the wedding. From the custom cups and koozies, to the napkins, menus and of course the invitations, everything was done with so much thought and detail to make sure it was exactly what we wanted.

After we booked Zofia & Co, it was on to the flowers and dcor. After looking through photo books in Nicole’s office I knew the only person I wanted to work with was Dawn from Soiree Floral. Not only did she put together gorgeous arrangements, but she thought about the big picture as well as the intricate details. She understood how important the little details were to making the wedding feel the way we wanted it to. When we met, we immediately clicked and fed off of each other’s ideas, and little by little everything was figured out. I had decided that the color scheme would be mostly whites, creams, and blushes with pops of coral and aqua throughout and wanted the overall feel of the dcor to be a little rustic, yet still formal and classic. To do this we rented long rectangular farm tables to mix in with the traditional round tables, with high arrangements on the round tables and low centerpieces with driftwood on the farm tables. Both types of tables were covered in beautiful flowers and tons of candles which were also spread out throughout the room to give it an overall glow and romantic feel. The dcor on the day of the wedding was absolutely beautiful and captured all of the ideas, pictures, and conversations wed had about how I wanted it to look, and the feel I wanted to give to our guests.

One of the most important decisions for the wedding was finding the right band; one that knew how to make the room party and dance all night. Paul and I really wanted our wedding to be an evening where no one would want to leave the dance-floor. When else were we going to have our nearest and dearest together in our favorite place? We researched, talked to friends from Boston and found the most amazing band: Eye 2 Eye. They were amazing to work with and on the night of the party they did exactly what we wanted: they gave us a party that not one person wanted to end.

One of the last decisions we made was booking our videographer, and we were so fortunate Dan Driscoll of September productions was still available. He and his team were absolutely incredible and we were so glad that they were there to capture all the special moments throughout the weekend. The video is unbelievable and still makes me cry every time we watch it.

As we received wedding responses we sent the guests a welcome packet designed by Ellie Gottwald that included all the details of the wedding weekend events. It also gave suggestions on where to eat, shop and play, and all of the information to make the wedding weekend more than just a celebration, but also a vacation. We wanted our guests to experience some of our favorite places on Nantucket during their stay, so we had a kick-off party on the Thursday before the wedding at the Cisco Brewery, where we gave out our custom koozies for everyone to enjoy the amazing Cisco drinks and atmosphere. Here, they could get a feel for where we like to go to relax at the end of a beautiful Nantucket beach day. We also wanted part of the wedding weekend to have a truly authentic Nantucket feeling, so we held our rehearsal dinner and Dessert and Cocktails at Cru, a new restaurant with very nautical Nantucket dcor, great food, and an incredible view of the boats in the Nantucket harbor.

From beginning to end on our wedding day, there were little details that were parts of our Nantucket that we shared with our family and friends. We wanted the wedding to be formal but with a rustic Nantucket feel, so the groomsmen wore black tuxes with a beautiful aqua blue printed bowtie. We had a basket of pashminas available for the women in case they got cold during the ceremony which was held on the Yacht Club lawn by the harbor. The ceremony was so beautiful by the water under the Chuppah, which was covered with billowy white fabric and beautiful flowers adorning the four posts. I gave Paul a special surprise and had the local Nantucket A cappella group The Cobbletones break out into Forever by Chris Brown at a certain point towards the end of the ceremony. His face and everyone elses reactions were priceless.

The cocktail hour on the patio was incredible, from a customized grilled cheese station to a raw bar in a boat with a Lindsay and Paul plaque out front, all under an amazing Nantucket sunset. We shot off the cannon at the end of the cocktail hour to signal everyone in to the reception, and the band immediately got the party going. The night was filled with laughter and dancing from beginning to end and one of our favorite things are all of the photos we now have from the photo-booth we had brought in. Towards the end of the night we passed out mini ice cream cones on the dance floor filled with our favorite Green Monster ice cream from the Juice Bar, and gave out our favorite mini cookies from Something Natural for everyone to take home. When the party came to an end Paul and I left through a sparkler send off by our friends and family and got into a boat that took us to our hotel for the night. There are so many little things that made it so special to us, but the best part of it was how unique it felt simply because of it being in Nantucket.

In the end the vision I had in my head came to life perfectly. All of the details and planning added up into the perfect weekend for everyone and made it a weekend that we will never forget. Our friends and family now understand why we love Nantucket so much, how special and unique it is and fell in love with the island, too. It was so special to have all our friends and our families together in a place that we love so much as Paul and I started the next chapter of our lives together. We are so thankful to everyone that was a part of making the day so special, we couldn’t have asked for a better group of people. My words of advice to brides out there is to never lose sight of why you are putting in all of this effort and time in to one day of your life. It is one of the few times in life that you are surrounded by so much love in one place and it just doesnt get better than marrying your one and only surrounded by all of your loved ones on your favorite place on earth.

Lyman Estate Wedding

Any mom that handcrafts 1,001 origami paper cranes – a Japanese symbol of good luck – deserves some sort of medal in my book. And when that origami serves as the most gorgeous ceremony backdrop you ever did see? Let’s just say I love it all the more. Captured by the lovely Ze Liang Photography with blooms by Hiromi Flowers, this cultural beauty is one you just mustn’t miss.

Whimsical

From the Bride… I had the pleasure of photographing Beth and Matt’s wedding at Lyman Estate. It was very special because they incorporated their Japanese and Hawaiian styles. Not only did they have a traditional Hawaiian ceremony where Beth and Matt put leis on each other as well as their parents, but they also had a banzai toast during reception where everyone yelled “Banzai!” three times as loud as they could, which symbolized good luck. One of the most special elements in planning and decorating their venue (Lyman Estate) was the crane origami. Beth’s mom’s full time job a few months leading up to the wedding was to make 1001 cranes, which was used as their ceremony backdrop as well as place cards. In Japanese culture, cranes also symbolize good luck.

A very person touch that was incorporated in the making of Beth’s bouquet was the lace that was pinned on the handle. It was a part of Beth’s grandmother’s wedding dress. Beth and her grandmother had a close relationship so she wanted something that belonged to her that she could carry with her all day. There were photos of Beth holding her grandparents’ wedding photo and Matt holding his grandparents’. As a photographer, I love photos like those because they tell a story, a story about the bride and groom and their tie to their grandparents. It captured a timeless moment because no matter how long from now they look at the photos, their relationship remains the same.

Beth and Matt’s modern romance began on Valentine’s Day when Matt messaged Beth on OkCupid. They had exchanged messaged for a while until Beth suggested they met up. Matt was solving a crossword puzzle and was struggling on a word; when Beth arrived, she was able to solve it right away; Matt had then known he found a smart one. On their first date, they went to “Little Italy”, aka the North End. They were huge fans of standup comedy shows so of course their first date involved going to Comedy Connection in the North End.

Lyman Estate was beautiful. It’s a historic property surrounded by tall trees and a huge lawn. It felt like the wedding took place somewhere in the suburbia when it was right in Waltham, which wasn’t too far from the city. There was a small hill next to the estate where most people seemed to neglect, we did bridal party photos and formals on the hill and it turned out to be gorgeous. All of it was possible because instead of wearing heels, Beth wore flats so she could walk on the pebble road for the ceremony, being able to walk to the top of the hill was an added bonus.

Intimate Backyard Wedding

I’ve been to many weddings in my day, but I have to say, backyard weddings totally steal my heart. They are intimate, heartfelt and filled with darling details that never fail to fill me with happiness. Take this beauty from Lisa Rigby Photography for example, it’s practically perfect in every way, and you can see even more right here.

From the Bride…With our families living so far apart (London and Boston) we wanted to create a really intimate and personal atmosphere where everyone could come together and just have a really fun evening. One way we did this was by including some small, subtle details that would represent different aspects of us both. The sailcloth tent by Sperry Tents spoke to the grooms love of sailing, while the homemade strawberry jam guest favors were a nod to the bride’s love of crafts and baking. With both of us working in environmental fields, we wanted the event to have minimal impact by choosing vendors with similar values. Season to Taste, who catered the event and specializes in locally sourced food, served a delicious vegetarian/pescatarian dinner. Our wedding planner/floral decorator, Whim Events, perfectly captured the feeling of a garden party with delicate flowers and lots of tiny tea lights. To top it all off, Darlingside, a local band who are really growing in the Boston music scene, collaborated with the bride’s brother and sister to play a surprise cover of the bride’s favorite song, setting the tone for an evening of wild dancing.

Colorful Horse Farm Wedding

I’m a Montana native, which means that I’m born to love farm weddings.  So give me a gallery full of colorful fun at The Arabian Horse Inn and you can bet I’ll be spending my entire day swooning over every last awesome detail.  Especially when those details include vibrant blooms from Stillman’s Farm and gorgeous images from Zac Wolf Photography.  See them all here.

From Zac Wolf Photography… The Arabian Horse Inn provided a dreamy backdrop to Jordy and Rhiannon’s wedding. As you can see, I fell in love with all the animal friends. If you are going to have animals at your wedding, don’t be surprised when you see me petting them. But back to the topic at hand, this wedding so filled with love and personality it was impossible not to smile all day. It’s amazing to see two of the kindest people I have ever met tying the knot.

From the photographer… I am so excited and giddy to share this inspiration shoot put together by some amazing vendors in MA! We wanted this styled shoot to reflect the beauty and serenity of New England in the winter. We chose a lake behind a private residence in Wellesley, MA called Lake Sabrina. The edges of the lake were covered with snow and it added the perfect wintry backdrop.

Our vision was a wintry-inspired, white, light green and gold theme. We were inspired by both the simplicity and beauty from the lake and its quiet surroundings.

Alison and Paul got ready together in their apt and we took the 10 minute walk over to their venue.  They had a beautiful ceremony at the Arlington Town Hall, a great reception at the Whittemore Robbins House and a night that ended with an ice cream truck. Almost every part of this wedding was DIY –  flowers, desserts, and even officiating was done by Alison’s father.

From the cinematographer… On a crisp fall weekend in September, Bess & Ben celebrated their wedding in a Nantucket weekend-long celebration. Festivities started with an oyster bar and dinner on the beach at The Jetties. The next day, the couple was married in a beautiful daytime ceremony at First Congregational Church, a quintessential 1800s New England church, with views of the entire island. Guests tossed rose petals as the couple departed in a classic old car.

Dinner & dancing followed at the historic Siasconset Casino. The couple celebrated their love of the island with details such as a Nantucket map as their guest registry. They celebrated their decidedly different cultures (he is British, she’s from the South) with food reflecting each region. The couple & their friends danced the night away to the Sultans of Swing!

Romantic New England Farm Wedding

This Harrington Farms wedding from Zac Wolf Photography is seriously making my morning. Not only is it gorgeous and filled with stunning color and style, it’s also overflowing with the obvious love these two share. The result? Image after image of pure happiness, and you can see it all right here.

From Zac Wolf PhotographyMeghan and Daniel’s Harrington Farm Wedding was nothing less than perfect. Weather: exquisite, venue: perfection, details: on point, and music: performed not just by friends, but also by family. With Daniel’s dad singing during the ceremony. And his dad and brothers playing during the parent dances, and at the end of the night he picked up his guitar and sang a song to Meghan. Easily this was one of the most heartfelt and romantic weddings I have ever seen in my life and I am so happy to share these images.

Whimsical Seaside Wedding

This is one of those totally fun weddings that I sooo wish I had been invited to.  A seaside extravaganza that is one seriously pretty party.  I’m talking the fab stylings of LoLo Event Design, a breathtaking backyard ceremony and a bride and groom who really know how to celebrate saying “I do.”  See every vibrant moment captured by Zev Fisher right here.

From LoLo Event Design… Lizzy and Alec are a classic college love story, yet with a dedication and respect for each other that makes them wise beyond their years.

The couple approached LoLo Event Design looking to create a wedding that reflected not just their seaside venue, but their personal fun, whimsical style. Instead of a strict color scheme we explored a mix of vibrant patterns layered with nautical touches.

We created an intimate ceremony, held at the bride’s childhood home, through the use of mixed Adirondack seating and a ukulele player. Pinwheels, custom made from Orla Kiely wallpaper, lined the aisle to the tree under which Alec and Lizzy would say I do. A tree adorned with DIY embroidery wheels of mixed fabric.

Following the ceremony guests were treated to lemonade as the wedding party boarded a boat, named “Elizabeth M” which was changed to “Elizabeth R” (the bride’s new initial) for the recessional trip. Even the boat running aground couldn’t put a damper on the mood. The bride and groom posed with a “Just Married” life preserver diy-ed by LoLo Event Design.

At the reception the pattern theme continued with blue and white striped napkins and flag table numbers accented by bright pink menu cards. Custom DIY escort cards were created to be reminiscent of nautical knots.

The bride and groom danced the night away with family and over 30 friends from Union College.

Mad Men Inspired Wedding

I am completely obsessed with this wedding.  Maybe that has a little something to do with the fact that it happens to be styled after one of my favorite shows (Mad Men) AND it’s drop-dead gorgeous in every which way possible.  I’m talking rich purple hues, a crazy cool Omni Parker House setting and one seriously adorable bride and groom.  See it all captured by Forevercandid Photography right here.

From the Bride… Jim and I got engaged while we were living in Boston and even though we are both from Connecticut, we knew that we wanted to have our wedding in the city. Boston is so beautiful in the summer and holds a lot of special memories for us. We toured a bunch of venues but when we first walked into the Omni Parker House, I knew we had found our place. As soon as you walk into the lobby you feel as if you have been transported to a bygone era complete with rich furnishings, fresh flowers, and ornate, brass elevators. The rooftop ballroom has huge windows that display gorgeous views of the city and make for some spectacular photos at sunset. Add to that all of the history that the Omni has witnessed – JFK proposed to Jackie in their restaurant, Charles Dickens took up residence there, Malcolm X worked as a busboy – and we were completely in love.

Once we found our venue, a lot of the other details began to fall into place. We both love the show “Mad Men” as well as that era in general, and the historic beauty of the Omni lent itself perfectly to having a 60’s inspired wedding. After some research and quite a few DIY notes from SMP, I sat down and began to put the details together. I wanted our color palette to contrast with all of the gold and brass at the Omni so I chose eggplant with green and ivory compliments. Our fashion was a nod to the classic style of the 60’s – I wore a lace gown with a small birdcage, the guys wore James Bond style tuxedos, and the girls wore clean and simple A-line dresses with a small brooch at the waist to give them some sparkle.

I’m definitely not the craftiest person, but with the help of my friends and family I added some fun touches that carried our “Mad Men” vibe through to the reception. I incorporated an antique typewriter we found buried in the basement to our guest book alongside a vintage suitcase that I found while treasure hunting at an antique shop. We wanted to get some fun candids of guests so we set up a makeshift Polaroid station complete with handmade “Mad Men” inspired props created by my MOH. Guests were greeted at cocktail hour with a signature Vodka Gimlet to go along with the 60’s tunes played by the jazz trio. Later, as a surprise, we brought in Boston Cigar Factory to roll handmade cigars for all of our guests (and included chocolate ones for non-smokers!).

All of the special touches came together perfectly, but the one thing I will never forget is looking into Jim’s eyes as I walked down the aisle. Both of my parents walked with me while my good friend Molly, a professional violinist, played “Canon in D.” My grandfather, who was a Holocaust survivor and one of the most important people in my life, was honored and his prayer shawl hung over us as we said our vows – which I made it through without crying! It was the best day of my life and the perfect start to a beautiful future together.

Top Questions To Ask Your Vendors

Narrowing down your wedding dream team is meant to be an exciting part of the wedding planning process. With so many amazingly talented and creative event purveyors out there, you want to make sure you’re selecting pros that not only fit your wedding aesthetic, but compliment your personal taste. To guarantee you’re working with a supportive and thoughtful selection of vendors, jot these questions down before your next big meeting. xoxo, SMP Blogger Bride Amelia

AVAILABILITY: When thinking of hiring a wedding planner, after you inquire about the availability of your wedding date, it’s important to ask about the most challenging wedding they’ve planned and how they handled the issues that popped up. You want to make sure your wedding vendors have strong problem solving skills.

EXPERIENCE: If you’re planning on having a larger wedding, ask certain vendors (wedding planner, venue, catering, etc) if they’ve worked with a party of your size. It’s also helpful to know if they’ve worked with your type of budget before.

PORTFOLIO: When meeting with any type of wedding vendor you should always ask to see their portfolio and a list of references. You’ll be able to get a sense of their aesthetic from past weddings and figure out if their style will be a good fit for the venue and your taste.

RESTRICTIONS: When looking for a venue, make sure to inquire about the restrictions for the space. Do they allow candles, balloons, sparklers, etc.? If any of these details are extremely important to you then you may want to rethink this particular venue option.

BACK-UP PLANS: If you plan on having an outdoor wedding, I’d recommend asking your potential wedding vendors to describe how they’ve handled an event with unfortunate weather conditions. It’s important to know how they would resolve this type of dilemma.

FEES: Before signing a contract, make sure to ask if their is a service charge on top of the bill and if so, how much will it cost.

SCHEDULE: Don’t forget to ask how many wedding/event clients the vendor will be working with during the month and weekend of your wedding. Will they be swamped in the months leading up to your Big Day or will they be able to give you a solid amount of attention?

FINE PRINT: Although this question may seem very basic, it’s important to ask for a list of every detail that is included in the vendor fee before you sign the contract.

COMMUNICATION: It’s important to hire vendors that have similar communication styles, if you’re the type of bride that wants to finalize details early in your engagement, then you should search for vendors who share that similar goal.

DAY-OF: Make sure to inquire about whether or not the exact vendor will be at your wedding. Some vendors hire day of help or will send assistants to work your wedding, if they have more than one obligation on that date.

Nautical Martha’s Vineyard Wedding at Edgartown Yacht Club

New England is the place I call home, and weddings like this one remind me of why. Captured beautifully by Betsi Ewing Studio, every gorgeous image showcases not only the beautiful Martha’s Vineyard, but also the couples’ obvious love for each other and their oh-so gorgeous day. The result? A gallery worth spending your day pursuing. Do so here.

From Betsi Ewing StudioJulia and Jesse officially met their sophomore year of college, at Savannah College of Art & Design. Things seemed just right from the start, and have just kept getting better. After 8 amazing years together – Jesse popped the question one very special evening (Julia’s 27th Birthday!) on Martha’s Vineyard. They continued the tradition by celebrating their commitment to one another on the Vineyard, this past September with friends and family for their wedding and look forward to continuing the tradition for years to come.

Jesse had been thinking of asking Julia to marry him since they met. And then he finally saved up enough money…On August 7, the night before Julia’s birthday, Jesse asked Julia’s parents for their blessing and permission to marry their daughter. Of course, they said “Yes!” This gave Jesse an entire day to hide the secret from Julia and attempt to act as normal as possible. Jesse, rather nervously, asked Julia if she would like to take a post-birthday dinner walk on the beach with their dogs, Chloe and Lucky. As the sun started to set, Jesse knelt down on one knee and asked for Julia’s hand in marriage. Julia, rather surprised but entirely over-joyed, answered “Yes!” They walked back from the beach to Julia’s thrilled parents, Jesse’s future in-laws, and continued the celebration with champagne and birthday cake. It is safe to say, this has been Julia’s most memorable birthday yet!

They started their wedding planning right away since they had such busy schedules but the vineyard was not the easiest place to get to. They decided to get married on September 28th, the day after Jesse’s 28th birthday. Ever since Julia was a little girl, she had dreamed of getting married on the Island and to keep the tradition going, Julia followed in her parents foot steps not only by getting married on the island but also by honoring the number 28 – as her parents wed on May 28, 1978.

There is not shortage of beautiful places to get married on the vineyard – but they found the Edgartown Lighthouse to be the best fit and it was just a quick boat ride to the yacht club – where they would have their reception From there on, Julia’s mother Patti, Kathy Miller – her mother in law, and Julia’s maid of honor, Cameron Archer helped Julia and Jesse plan the rest of the details of their Vineyard dream wedding.

A month after the wedding they moved from Manhattan NY, to Brooklyn. They now happily live in Brooklyn Heights in an exposed brick, skylit brownstone with their dog Chloe.

Intimate Cape Cod Wedding

As much as I love a larger, grander affair, intimate weddings are my favorite.  There’s just something about celebrating your day with only your closest friends + family that makes me happy… and this darling Cape Cod affair?  Filling my heart with joy.  A nine person guest list, beautiful blooms from Wild Bunch Studio and moment after moment of pretty captured by Kate Preftakes.  Sigh.  See it all here.

From the Bride… Being an enthusiastic-to-passionate type, I can get very excited and wound up in the moment. So for my wedding day, I knew I needed to find a way to keep the celebration relaxed and low-key. We had scheduled later receptions with our respective hometown family, friends, and live bands in New York and Chicago. But an intimate wedding day involving just our parents, siblings, and officiant (a priest friend) proved a great way to keep the focus on each other.

My husband, Matt, had grown up summering on Cape Cod and enjoys sailing, so we made that our setting and style inspiration. A graphic designer friend, Donny Skelton, created invitations, programs, and menu cards with a modern, unstuffy take on that theme, incorporating a sailboat and diagonal stripes. I chose a corset-style dress with subtle striping to reflect the East Coast’s preppy, seaside vibe. My sister and Maid of Honor wore a statement pearl necklace. The men wore cravats—just like my stylish groom’s Italian grandfather had tied on at his wedding—and morning coats with tails. Our coral and navy color scheme, a fresh take on the standard nautical red and blue, completed the elegant coastal-infused feel.

Our ceremony was held in Cape Cod’s traditional gray shingled St. Pius X Catholic Church, which was also Matt’s family parish. My friend Tom Gibbons, now a priest in Toronto, flew in from Canada to preside. He made our ceremony personal and full of laughter. For instance, after pronouncing us husband and wife, he said, “Lynn, you may now kiss the groom.” Our nine guests tossed coral rose petals to send us off, and we drove off in a Toyota Prius with my name on the license plate. And Matt’s name had been added on through some cute surprise decorating by my siblings!

We took pictures among the sailboats at Claughlin’s Landing, a classic beach on the Cape’s southeastern tip. Then we held a post-ceremony dinner at the Chatham Bars Inn, one of the loveliest old-fashioned resorts in Massachusetts. The Captain’s Room, with its 12-person seating, was perfect. Our florist, Katie McConnell of Wild Bunch Studio, created the most beautiful table we’d ever sat around. Texturally, contrasts set things apart: a rustic stone runner against elegant candles in mercury glass; spiky orange pincushion flowers against soft spray roses.

We went around the table, and each person offered a funny or heartfelt toast. Photographer Kate Preftakes had beautifully captured the special moments of our ceremony and then our time on the beach. To finish, she caught us laughing, toasting, and occasionally tearing up during the dinner. It completed the intimate wedding day we’d imagined.

DIY Valentine’s Day Bouquet

This next DIY project falls under the “why didn’t I think of that?” category. A do-it-yourself Valentine’s Day Bouquet? It’s kind of brilliant! Not only is it easier on the wallet, the lady (or gent) in your life is guaranteed to be swept of their feet as a result of your craftiness. Not crafty you say? Have no fear, Pollen Floral Design and Zac Wolf Photography are here to share every last step.

Materials
Red Amaryllis
Ranunculus
Piano Garden Rose
Anemone
Majolica Spray Rose
Red Cestrum
Gardenia Foliage
Leucothoe Foliage
Red Leucadendron
Sea Star Fern
Floral Tape
Various Ribbon

instructionsstep-1Prep your flowers: remove any leaves or thorns from the stem so they’re ready to be used in your bouquet. Give them a fresh diagonal cut and let them soak in water for several hours before using them.

step-2Set out all your flowers in vases or a bucket so you have easy access to your stems.

step-3Start by making a small cluster of flowers. I like variety in my bouquets, so I usually start with a focal flower (in this bouquet, garden roses, amaryllis and anemone) and add in some smaller flowers (ranunculus, spray rose) and filler/greenery (bouvardia, gardenia foliage).

step-4Once you have your starting bunch, you continue to add flowers to fill out your bouquet. Try to turn the bouquet in your hand as you add so that you are building it all the way around and not just in the front. Continue turning and adding flowers until you reach your desired size.

step-5When you are satisfied with your bouquet, wrap the floral tape securely around your stems several times.

step-6Tie on your ribbon wrap so it covers the floral tape.

step-7Hold the stems together and make a clean, straight cut about 8-12 inches long. Spritz the bouquet with a floral finisher (such as Crowning Glory) and put it in water until you are ready to use your bouquet. If you are leaving it overnight, put it in your refrigerator so that the life of the flowers will be preserved.
