Nautical Marblehead Wedding at the Boston Yacht Club

A good old fashioned nautical New England wedding will always rank among my favorites. And after taking a look at Studio Nouveau‘s gorgeous image below, it’s pretty easy to see why. With perfectly chic nods to all things nautical, this gallery is inspiration overload for anyone planning a similar fête.

From The Studio Nouveau…There was no detail too small for Kate & Erik’s breathtaking yacht club wedding. From the personalized maps on the invitations, to the illustrated day-of timeline, to his custom cufflinks with a local nautical chart, to the organic wedding cake, to the sailor’s knots on the back of the reception chairs…we could go on and on. Absolutely nothing was overlooked! Although it was in mid-October, it was one of those spectacularly warm & sunny New England autumn days that made it feel like summer. And there were so many standout moments – the bagpiper playing the recessional, the breeze that made Kate’s floor-length veil into a flawless sail during their portraits – but our favorite had to be the bridal party post-ceremony toast on the yacht club’s private skiff. It was the perfect way to have a few moments of private celebration amongst their close group of friends, and to kick-off the incredible party that was had at the reception! From The Bride…I have a very special memory of looking up at our wedding venue with the bagpiper playing over the water and our guests waving to use from the deck. It wasn’t all ‘smooth sailing’ planning our wedding, but we were both able to take a moment alone that evening and remind each other to cherish each other, everything and everyone that celebrated our wedding day with us.

Nantucket Wedding at the White Elephant Hotel

Nantucket weddings are always ridiculously pretty, but when they are hosted at the White Elephant Hotel with floral design by Soiree Floral, invitations by Ceci New York and sparkles and champagne sprinkled in wherever possible? Well, that’s a whole new level of pretty. And when Christian Oth Studio is behind the lens snapping up every perfect detail – we know we’ve struck wedding gold. See it all here.

From The Bride…Jack and I met in 2009 at a St. Patrick’s Day celebration in NYC through mutual friends. At the end of the day Jack asked for my phone number and I said no! However, over the next few months we kept running into each other and eventually I gave in and we started “hanging out.” We dated casually for about a year before we decided to give our relationship a real try. From there we had the best two years together, testing out different restaurants in NYC for date night, going on vacations together, and after a year, moving in together.

Jack proposed in September 2012 during a trip to Napa. We were flying in to San Francisco and planned to spend one night there before heading out to wine country. Jack had the ring in his pocket the entire flight from New York to San Francisco and was trying to figure out when and where to pop the question. But ultimately he couldn’t wait – right when we arrived to our hotel room, there was a knock on the door and in came a bottle of champagne. Before I knew it, Jack had gotten down on his knee with the most gorgeous ring and asked me to marry him. We then spent the rest of our time in Napa celebrating – enjoying the delicious food and wine and discussing how we envisioned our wedding.

We both immediately thought of Nantucket. We had vacationed there together several times during our relationship and it was a place that was special to the both of us that we wanted to share with our family and friends. We wanted everyone to fall in love with the island like we had – and they did! With a fall wedding, it felt like we had the island to ourselves.

Both of our families and all of our friends really enjoy a good time, so we wanted to make sure to accommodate. We kicked off the wedding weekend with an amazing rehearsal dinner at Cisco Brewery (one of our favorite spots to go after the beach) hosted by Jack’s family. The dinner was complete with lobster, barbeque chicken, the Brewery’s signature drinks and live music.

The day of the wedding started off a little rainy, which had me nervous, but as the ceremony got closer, the clouds parted and the sun started to come out…just in time! The traditional ceremony was held at First Congregational Church, officiated by Reverend Gary Klingsporn and as we left the church, our friends and family tossed glitter (instead of petals) our way. We then had a bagpiper lead the crowd as we all walked from the church down to The White Elephant Hotel for the cocktail hour and reception. The cocktail hour was hosted on the lawn overlooking the harbor and featured passed appetizers and a raw bar. Though I wanted to keep the color palette fairly subtle since the island is so gorgeous on its own, Dawn Kelly from Soiree Floral and I tried to work in my love for sparkles and champagne iwherever we could! We covered the cocktail tables with white and gold sequin chevron linens and tied escort cards to mini champagne bottles to show guests to their seats.

Following cocktail hour, guests were led into a stunning tent for the reception as Jack and I had our first dance as husband and wife to The Lumineers’ “Ho Hey.” From that point on the dance floor was the place to be. As the night came to a close (for some), guests lit wish lanterns for us and let them float up into the night sky. It was truly a picture perfect wedding.

Coastal Cape Cod Wedding at Wychmere Beach Club

Cape Cod and gorgeous coastal weddings go hand in hand, yet I am always shocked right out of my seat when I see a beach chic beauty like this one at the Wychmere Beach Club.  With the sweet DIY details under that beautiful Sperry Tent, it’s picture perfect to say the least. And from the looks at the images sitting in this gallery from Zev Fisher Photography, perfect doesn’t even do it justice.

From The Bride…Mixing Summer coming to an end with the beginning of Fall touches throughout the decor, this Cape Cod wedding was heightened by the unreal weather that we were blessed with.

Growing up on the Cape in Harwich Port made deciding on a perfect setting for our day was easy. Jay and his family summer in Harwich so it is near and dear to his heart as well. We both grew up going to Wychmere Beach Club with our families and have some of our best memories from our summers there. Ultimately, it’s where we first met! It made so much sense to have our reception there. After exchanging vows in Holy Trinity Church in West Harwich we drove off in an old-school Woody Jeep Wagoneer convertible (chauffeured by Uncle Bill) to take pictures at the overlook. We loved that drive! It was the perfect way to have a mintute to enjoy the day so far. Zev Fisher our photographer got a great shot of all the bridesmaids and myself in the back. Its one of my favorite shots of the day. At cocktail hour we had the talented Brian Scully preform some acoustic classics. He made our day. My dress (Allure Bridal) was originally strapless and we worked closely with an amazing seamstress, Karen White of Brewster, to make the hand-sewn stitched lace overlay cap sleeves.

We kept the decor somewhat simple since the scenery and overall property on Wychmere is stunning in itself. Nautical flares accented the simplicity. The DIY compass escort cards were a big hit! We tied the names to burlap with navy and white twine. We fell in love with the blue mason jars and lanterns as centerpieces. It set the mood for our guests just the way we had hoped. The table names were also a DIY project. I am lucky to have very talented and artistic mother and sister. The tables were all named after places that mean a lot to Jay and I; places that we’ve been and have wonderful memories at. On the guestbook table we had a view of generation pictures as well. It was so fun to see our parents and grandparents on their wedding days. It’s always fun to reminiscence and compare notes! We could not have asked for a better day. The weather cooperated perfectly with mild temperature, hardly any wind, and the bluebird day came to an end with a completely majestic cotton candy sunset. The backdrop was breathtaking and we couldn’t have asked for more. The flowers (by New England Gardens) added a bit of romance to the overall look and blended perfectly with the seaglass bridesmaid dresses (by Belsoie). My sister and MOH stood out with a navy sash to match the boys navy suits. The staff at Wychmere was outstanding. We couldn’t have been happier with our coordinator, Karen Rood. She became like family and made our experience unforgettable.

Throughout the planning process we referred to the wedding as a party (“Can you make it to our party??”) and that was the vibe we wanted to spread; everyone have a good time, enjoy each others company, join in on the dance party, and help us celebrate our brand new life together! Our band Night Rhythm (Monica & Brian) keep the dance floor packed all night long. It was definitely a day Jay and I will never forget and we have some many people to thank for that.

Elegant Cape Cod Wedding at the Wychmere Beach Club

It goes without saying that we see a lot of weddings on a typical day, but when a wedding like this beauty lands in our lap, we stop everything we are doing to soak it all in. This, my lovelies, has SMP written all over it. From the stunning pink peonies by Exquisite Linens And Florals to the elegant spin on a typical beach wedding to the model-worthy Bride and Groom, this gallery from Kelly Dillon had the entire SMP HQ squealing with happiness, and you can see why right here.

From The Bride… Rick and I grew up in the same Massachusetts suburban town and lived only about a mile and a half away from each other; we even attended the same elementary school at the same time but never met until we were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. Six months after our first date, Rick proposed.

We loved the idea of having our wedding on Cape Cod so our family and friends would have the opportunity to enjoy a nice summer weekend outside of the city. Rick was also a fan of the Cape because he has such fond memories from his visits to his grandparents’ summer home in Truro.

For our wedding theme and inspiration, we wanted to capture the romance of a wedding by the ocean and amplify it even more by making it feel very elegant and glamorous. We looked at a lot of different indoor venues and fell in love with the Wychmere Beach Club in Harwich Port, MA. We chose the Harbor room because of its softly lit walls, washed out floors and expansive walls of French glass windows overlooking the harbor.

We worked with a color palette consisting of soft pink pastels, blush, and ivory, along with touches of silver to match the Harbor Room’s chandeliers and the Chiavari chairs we selected for the tables. I have always loved the look of ombré and used pink ombré subtlety in our wedding invitation suite, on the ceremony programs, with the petal toss paper holders and on the outside (and inside!) of our cake.

I knew I wanted flowers to be one of the main highlights of the wedding décor and I was thrilled when I met with Yasiris Matias, owner of Exquisite Linens & Florals in Andover, MA. She saw my vision exactly and created the most glamorous flower arrangements consisting of the highest-quality and most beautiful orchids, David Austin Roses, peonies and Dutch Hydrangeas. Yasiris also incorporated an array of stunning crystal brooches by adding them to the bouquets and the vases and candles used as decor. It truly looked like a celebrity wedding and she managed to stay within my floral and décor budget.

The DIY projects we handled for the wedding were the envelope box, the guest book, the men’s and women’s bathroom signs (photos of Rick and I when we were kids), and the pink ribbon stirrers used for the specialty cocktail – a pink margarita with pink sea salt.

I chose a mermaid style gown by Lazaro, which had very unique ruffle that Lazaro calls the “wave ruffle.” It almost looked like ocean waves (fitting for a wedding by the water!). I was thrilled when my mom and sister surprised me with a drawing Lazaro had sketched of me in the dress. We put it on display during cocktail hour. My chapel length veil was custom made with the tiniest swarovski crystals, which gave a twinkling effect when the light hit just right.

The bridesmaid dresses were by Amsale; they were the palest pink I could find and very sexy and romantic, with flowing crinkled chiffon and lingerie straps.

On the morning of our wedding, the day began with a torrential downpour, which thankfully stopped right before I left for the church. The skies were overcast and there was a very wet feeling in the air, which didn’t make for the best hair but our photographer, Kelly Dillon, did an amazing job turning the drab outdoor lighting into a mystical veil of magic for the photos! Our hair might have been windblown, but the wind also helped Kelly get some amazing shots. The sun might not have been out, but God was still shining down on us – we had the loveliest day!

Classic Boston Winter Wedding at the Exchange Center

When you mention having a winter wedding in Boston, you might get a few interesting looks. It’s totally a gamble, but when you see a wedding like this one captured by Forevercandid Photography at the Exchange Center you’ll quickly see it’s totally worth the risk. The city just seems to shine, and that’s only enhanced by this gorgeous couple and their absolutely perfect wedding. See it all here.

From The Bride…It can be quite a gamble getting married in Boston in mid-November… you never know what you’re going to get, be it rain, wind, or even snow. but every inch of David and my November 16th wedding was nothing short of beautiful, sunshiny perfection. From my bouquet wrapped in pieces of my great-great grandmother’s “something old” gown to my “something blue” toenails, from the trolley to the rustic custom made street name table signs, from the wedding cake made by my wonderful aunt to late night ice cream sandwich truck, it was a deeply personal and truly special evening that we and (hopefully our guests!) will never forget.

David and my journey to the altar didn’t begin as most do. As friends for several years, our relationship slowly began to transition into something more, and nearly four years after our first official date, David popped the question in the middle of a snow storm in NYC, the city where we had met and fallen in love. Eleven months later we made it official in Boston, my hometown.

We spent much time thinking through many of the details of our wedding, and it was genuinely a jointly planned affair. We opted to keep things simple with black and white attire for the wedding party. We added color in with flowers, using an array of purples in the bouquets and arrangements. The groom wanted a few special touches of his own and opted for gingham suspenders and matching bow ties for the ring bearers. We were able to carry the black and white through the other details of the reception as well for a clean, consistent palate.

My mom and my 90 year old grandmas, my future mother-in-law, my girls and I started the day with champagne in a private room on the 3rd floor of the reception hall, wearing matching monogrammed shirts, even for our 6 year old flower girl. We all had their hair done by the same stylist and friend of the family who had done my mom’s hair for her wedding over 30 years before, and who had given me my first haircut and had done my hair for most of my life. David, the fathers and ring bearers, and the groomsmen gathered at the hotel before coming to the reception venue. They munched on some snacks and cold beers before David headed off to the first look meeting spot.

The first look was a joyful, emotional meeting of two hearts. David and I had just exchanged really sweet, personal letters so seeing each other for the first time on our wedding day was extra special. After much hugging, smiling and picture taking in front of the sailboats in the harbor, we were joined by the rest of the wedding party for some quick pics before boarding a trolley to St. Cecilia’s Church. The the flower girl and ring bearers who were David’s niece and nephews, walked down the aisle carrying a wooden heart shaped sign that said “Uncle David, here comes your girl” and a small wooden ring box with our initials. We chose readings, a poem, and a song to be performed during the ceremony, which was officiated by Fr. Kevin Wildes, president of Loyola New Orleans and close friend of David and his family. We had wanted the ceremony to be short and sweet, but personal and involve those who had helped shaped their lives. One of the highlights was my aunt singing a simply gorgeous song right after we took our vows.

Following the ceremony, the wedding party dashed off to Copley Square for some more pictures in the declining light before heading over to dance the night away and celebrate! Upon pulling up to the venue, our fantastic photographer Amber quickly snapped a few romantic moonlight pictures of David and I against the full moon. We then mingled with guests on the 2nd floor of the Exchange Center during the cocktail hour before heading downstairs for dinner. The entry table was lined with the purple bridesmaid bouquets. Place cards were stuck into chocolate dipped strawberries, also from my aunts bakery, and tables were named for streets that were important to us: where we grew up, where we went to college, places in NYC we had met and fallen in love, and the name of the street where we will begin our married life together. In lieu of a traditional guest book, guests signed a photo book of pictures of us together through the years. With big windows looking over Boston Harbor, the reception was illuminated by boats and buildings and the unbelievable full moon as a backdrop.

David and I kicked off the party with a choreographed first dance to “You Are the Best Thing” and our fabulous band had guests up and grooving within minutes of the reception starting. Dinner was a duet plate of chicken and salmon, and the cake was custom made by my aunt, who is a baker and owner of several well known bakeries in the Boston area. The loose black and white theme was reflected in the black and white paper lanterns, the black and white ivy table cloths, and the rustic driftwood street signs. After heartfelt and funny speeches from my dad, the maid of honor, best man, and David himself, the band played all of our favorite songs as guests danced the night away, especially my new mother-in-law, who put everyone to shame with her moves. Toward the end of the night, an ice cream food truck pulled up with custom made cookie ice cream sandwiches. The band transitioned to DJ-ing the last hour of the party and the dance floor remained packed right up until the end. All in all, it was the perfect celebration and a joyous night!

Elegant Heritage Museum Wedding

Love museum weddings! I think it’s idea of starting your future while honoring the larger historical context of your present. Gets me every time. Besides, who doesn’t want get down by a bunch of antique cars while DJ Cubey sets the mood? With some DIY decor and florals from Designers Touch, this wedding met every metaphor flawlessly. Don’t miss the full gallery for more of Angelina Rose Photography‘s exquisite images.

From Angelina Rose PhotographyErin & Brian were married on one of the most beautiful Saturdays in May at Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich, MA. A sweet, sentimental couple, a tear came to Brian’s eye upon seeing Erin for the first time that afternoon on the rolling green field at Heritage. The gardens were in full bloom and created the perfect backdrop for the couple. Erin & Brian were surrounded by friends and family as they pledged their love in front of the cascading waterfall above the lily ponds at Heritage. Erin & Brian brought out the importance of tradition, family and love through centerpieces by Abigail from Designer’s Touch that were built into antiques handed down by Erin & Brian’s families featuring a vintage feel and soft blush, peach and grey palette.

For a change of scenery, cocktails & delicious hors d’oeuvres were served in the two-story antique barn where the exhibit of model cars throughout the ages stood out against the exposed wood of the Automobile Gallery. Guests found their seating arrangements on the beautifully hand painted shutters that Erin refinished; one of the many details that were created by the bride.

Across from the Round Barn, dinner was kicked off by DJ Cubey and warm words from Erin & Brian and the genuine sentiments continued through the Maid of Honor & Best Man. The room was on it’s feet with glowing smiles on their faces and warmth in their hearts. The lights dimmed following dinner and guests were on their feet again, dancing into the night with cupcakes in hand! Dizzy with the joy of the day, Erin & Brian stole a moment to themselves to end the evening with an intimate kiss below the twinkling lights at Heritage Museums & Gardens.

Cocktail Class + Shrub Syrup Recipe

Up until recently, I hadn’t heard of shrub syrup. And then the darling Lauren Wells came into my life and taught me the error of my ways. Because, as it turns out, they infuse an instant hit of delicious into your every day bevvy. And we’re about to take a peek at the loveliest cocktail class to date, with a bonus recipe from Flask & Funnel and lots of stunning photos from our beloved Cambria Grace!

From Lauren Wells Events … I had the pleasure of designing and styling a cocktail class, led by the talented Andrew of Flask & Funnel. The workshop took place at one of the most charming shops in Boston’s South End – Farm & Fable. Abby (the owner) is one of those people who instantly makes you feel like a friend, and we were so grateful to make use of her beautiful space.

Contrary to popular belief, this class was not about plants. It was about vinegar-based fruit syrups, ideal for cocktails and other beverages. Everyone had a blast learning, sipping, shrubbing and tasting, and we have provided the basic shrub DIY below. Big thanks to Cambria Grace Photography for capturing the evening as well!

From the Bride…Jay and I got engaged in Paris in June of 2012. We had been together for 5 years and had been living together in Amsterdam in The Netherlands with our dog, Desmond, both working and enjoying the European lifestyle. The trip to Paris was our last European excursion before moving back home to Boston. It couldn’t have been a more fitting engagement—inside our Parisian apartment rental, balcony doors open, Wilco on the iPod dock, a cheese plate and wine on the table, and Desmond our dog sitting obediently next to Jay as he knelt down with the ring (from Antwerp).

When we got home to Boston, we looked around at venues and were convinced that we wanted an outdoor, tented affair on the coast of Maine. We initially wanted Maine because we first met in Portland. We met at a bar and made small talk before realizing that we were from bordering towns in Massachusetts and had gone to the same small college in New York (we missed being there at the same time by one year).

We were still touring waterside venues in Maine when we stopped in at the library in Copley Square. I’d always loved the Boston Public Library after having done some research there years before, so I wanted to check it out just for the sake of doing our due diligence. When we saw the library together, we were both enchanted, despite the fact that neither of us had imagined a cosmopolitan wedding. Our instincts immediately won over. I am an English teacher and we are both lovers of literature and art and the grandiosity and European style of the building charmed us immensely.

Our coordinator at the library, Eliza, of The Catered Affair, was a perfect match for us. She had already looked at my “Pinterest” boards when we first met and had a great sense of my style. The library is so rich with art and ornate designs already, I knew our decorations would have to be somewhat simple without being boring. Because Jay and I had spent the past two years traveling around Europe with our dog, we really wanted to incorporate the idea of the rich cultural heritages we had sampled into our design. Eliza and the rest of our vendors helped up facilitate this with ease. Our tables were named after the many cities we visited together, our photo booth had maps and suitcases as props, bar signs featured “Cheers” in the languages we were immersed in, our signature cocktails were Italian and Dutch respectively, and we had table runners made from cut up maps.

After over a year of planning, September 28, 2013 finally arrived and we were lucky enough to have a beautifully sunny, crisp fall day. Our photographer and videographer were both warm and fun to be around and all the preparations felt natural and easy. Eliza and her team had thought of everything and the night ran as smoothly as could be. Guests came in from all over the state, country, and even from abroad. A group of the High School students I taught came to see me in Copley Square before I went into the library. Desmond the dog walked down the aisle before me, my bike from Amsterdam held our ceremony programs in its basket, the detailing from my mother’s wedding dress was wrapped around my bouquet, and it was truly a celebration of our relationship and all the people and places we cherish most.

Classic New England Beach Club Wedding

There is something so very vintage about a New England Beach Club. So to have a wedding at one of these adorable, stuck-in-time spots is pure perfection to me. And with planning by North Shore Weddings By Ana, florals by The Singing Flower and an artist like Carla Ten Eyck behind the lens, telling a story one beautiful image at a time, well it doesn’t get any better. See for yourself right here.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/78428710 600 338]

From Carla Ten Eyck…Kate and Chris were married on September 13, 2013 with a ceremony at the Sacred Heart Church in Manchester, MA and a reception at the Singing Beach Club in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. It was an emotional, love-filled day and I was so happy to be there for all of it! Now Kate’s mom Bird is a photographer (no pressure, right??) and Kate modeled for me for a shoot a few years back, so I knew working with her would be a breeze… and it was! I started the day with Kate and the ladies, while my second shooter, Andrew Henderson spent some time with Chris and the boys. We spent the morning racing against the impending rain- as soon as the ceremony started it poured and then stopped right as we left for the reception and portraits! I was more than OK with that timing- mother nature needed to do her thing while Kate and Chris said their vows and then gave us the most beautiful afternoon and evening for portraits and a party!

Sophisticated Yacht Club wedding in the North Shore

If you’re planning a wedding remotely, it’s a good call to look for a venue that can take care of major details. Kim and Dan did just that, choosing the lovely Danversport Yacht Club. We think their wedding turned out beautifully with crisp white bouquets, navy J.Crew wrap dresses, and charming touches like a handwritten love story timeline. They chose the talented Kelly Dillion to photograph their big day. See more images here.

From the Bride… Danny and I met through our mutual friend, and Danny’s Best Man, Josh. We had been friends for about a year, but nothing more even though we both liked each other. Then a small group of us went ballroom dancing for fun and Danny and I danced together the entire time. The next day I was headed back to school in Oklahoma, but we texted like fiends and would chat online into the wee hours of the night. About a month later Danny surprised me by flying out to my school to see me in a musical production I was in and the rest is history :)

Danny proposed on May 10th right before I graduated college. Exactly a year before, we had spent the best day together after not having seen each other for months. We had lunch and spent the day sitting on a bench at a lake near my school. Danny recreated the day and brought me back to that bench to propose. For some reason it was quite cold and windy and of course I fought him the whole way over saying I was too cold. He finally got me to the bench, got down on one knee, and I just started bawling and said yes :)

Finding the venue came first. We were searching for a place within our budget that allowed for a ceremony on the water and a reception room close by and for a place took care of most of the details since we were planning everything from another state. From there everything fell into place since the venue set forth the overall vision. Pinterest was where I gathered all my ideas for the details, and I had a binder that helped me organize. The photos were our most important detail because we had a very specific vision of how we wanted the day captured and Kelly Dillon’s style was exactly what we were looking for :)

Traditional Wedding at The Mount

I’ve always had a soft spot for historic homes – I could literally spend a week straight touring majestic mansions across the country.  But give me a jaw-droppingly beautiful historic home like The Mount and pair it with a stunning meets traditional affair like this one planned by Christine Wheat Special Events and, well… happiness ensues, my friends.  See it all captured by Elario Photography right here.

From Elario Photography… I am so excited to share this wedding with you! This one was a stunner on all levels. It rained all day and it didn’t effect the couple one bit! Sara and Eddie were the perfect bride and groom, so humble and in love. The ceremony took place at Our Lady of Victory in Troy, New York. We then headed to The Mount in Lenox, Massachusetts. As we drove in my jaw dropped. The drive in was gorgeous. Everything was so GREEN from all the rain and then I saw the front of Edith Wharton’s Home, WOW! This place was built in 1902 and really is just amazing. Not only was the outside pristine, the inside was, as well. We opted to do the majority of shooting indoors because of the rain and I couldn’’t be happier with the results. Sara and Eddie were the kind of couple you need on a day like this. They were down to shoot outside, rain or shine, so we did for a little bit before cocktail hour began. The reception details were absolutely beautiful. Among the beautiful flowers were details Sara worked extremely hard on. Menu signage, seating charts and personalized scrolls for each guest at their seat. Nothing was overlooked.

From the Bride… Ed proposed to me in front of the Bryant Park fountain in New York City  – up until the day I married him, it was the best day of my life! With its casual cafe tables and manicured gardens, Bryant Park becomes this romantic escape in the middle of Manhattan. Musicians and artists roam the pathways while delicious meals and drinks are served within ivy covered terraces. This set the scene for our wedding day; casually elegant, romantic and artistic!

To us, the ceremony was the most important part of the day. Where we could choose each scripture, hymn and prayer that was used. Once we decided to have it at Ed’s church in Troy, NY, finding the venue was the next step. Where could we find a space like no other that eludes the three characteristics we found in the place that had become so important to us!? The Mount in Lenox, MA (Edith Wharton’s home) was love at first sight. From the moment you enter the grounds and travel down this windy driveway you will be in AWE. But, my breath was really taken away when The Mount appears behind the trees. The gardens are what attracted us, but with rain in the forecast we were able to take in the true glory inside of Wharton’s estate. (But, sneak outside for a few shots in the rain!)

We focused on our family and friends when designing the day; setting the tone from the beginning with our stationery. Soft colors in our Save the Date photo and an elegant twist on the classic invitation suite by adding painted gold edges. I also did all the address calligraphy by hand and created a painted version of the tree lined walkway at The Mount (the Lime Walk – which became a reoccurring theme). That piece of art was incorporated into the Welcome Bags on custom stickers, welcome envelope, the wedding program, and a custom scroll at each place setting (I had the best time making all of these details come to life!).

For the bridal party, Ed and I chose each of the gifts. He chose monogrammed belts, a black bow tie and socks for the gents. For the ladies, I chose pearl earrings in macaron boxes (I’m a sucker for Laduree), robes and custom flutes. Kaitlin and Jacqueline (from Strut Spalontique) brought a sense of cohesiveness to the ladies mix and matched dresses by keeping the beauty similar. Along with the matching earrings and bouquets! (I let all the ladies choose their own dress within a champagne/cream/blush color palette!)  To keep everything running smoothly, we had Christine and her dream team there to coordinate. I HIGHLY recommend having a day of coordinator!

After the ceremony, trolleys shuttled everyone to and from The Mount; allowing each person to take in the incredible surroundings. The Rosamund Trio was there to lend a musical touch during cocktail hour as well as, Giavana, our live painter, to give them another perspective of the main house (since cocktail hour was moved inside, they couldn’t see the back of the home from the garden). For a more personal touch, I drew drink menus, a main menu, a dessert menu and seating arrangements for our guests (all on antique family mirrors and frames). Our florist, Kris Ann, and her team transformed the terrace for dinner (even with the rain walls down!). We chose three different table settings with three different linens and center pieces (all neutral whites and creams with greenery and candles); it was all very textural. I personalized place card tags and connected them to each scroll using the same ribbon I cut for the programs and welcome bags. I brought the gardens on to the terrace by creating table numbers made from moss and attached them to mirrors. We had our musical genius, DJ Sam, there for hilarious introductions (add Avicii and the Harlem Shake together) and during dinner to create a casual cafe feel playing French cafe music who then made the flawless transition to one massive dance party! The first dances, the toasts and the cake cutting all happened on the dance floor. Joe Elario Photography (JP, Joe and Hayden) and Nuvue Cinema (John and Will) were with us every step of the way that day, capturing the most incredible moments and doing it with ease. We had the best time and would do it over and over again if we could!

Fun-Loving Backyard Wedding

We love fun couples! Just take a look at this bride who aptly describes her backyard wedding as a “New England backyard cookout crossed with a Downton Abbey-style tea party.” You can see tell how all the little touches perfectly play up their personalities, vintage princess cut dresses, faux moustaches and all! Their friends at Vitae Weddings even traveled all the way from California to capture the event.

From the Bride… Like a lot of couples that get engaged, one of us didn’t really know what was going on (me), and one of us was so focused on the proposal that he didn’t actually think about the wedding (Jesse). When we started talking about the wedding, the very first thing we discussed was our mutual (and long-held independent) desire to have a backyard wedding. I don’t remember the exact conversation but it went something like this: “I’ve always wanted a backyard wedding.” “Me too!” -End of conversation. Luckily, most of our planning was just as easy. One thing Jesse really wanted was to throw a really great party-and have a kick-ass band. I wasn’t sold on the whole wedding band thing, but I dutifully followed Jesse to these small private showcases with 3-4 other couples. All I can say is that it’s really weird to watch a sweat-drenched front man belt out “Mustang Sally” to an audience of six. I had always envisioned a barefoot bluegrass band, but Jesse was set on having a horn section. We ended up finding a local funk band: Big Ol’ Dirty Bucket that had the right not-cheesy-to-horn ratio that worked for both of us. I’m glad Jesse convinced me.

The only other really difficult part was our photographers. We had a short list of people we knew locally whose style we liked. As professional photographers ourselves, there was a pretty high bar. In a short time we exhausted the list, whether they were booked, or there were contract issues. We asked for recommendations from other friends who had gotten married recently, and exhausted the second list. We discussed not hiring a photographer-there’s going to be enough photographers there right? I don’t remember exactly how the conversation came up, but Jesse was talking with a friend he knew from school in California. She mentioned she was starting to shoot weddings. Well we booked Vitae Weddings shortly thereafter. It seemed crazy to fly our photographers from California when we know the New England area has an abundance of talent, but it really worked out great. The photos speak for themselves. Callie and Stacie did an amazing job of capturing the fun of the day from the very start, Callie documenting Jesse’s groomsmen throwing him in the Atlantic Ocean before getting dressed, and Stacie coming with me and my bridesmaids to our hair appointment, which was not nearly as entertaining, I’m sure! They stuck with us the whole day, from waking up to walking down the aisle of course, and also some amazing shots of partying and dancing. My dad even said to me later, “Those two girls were the hardest working people in the room!” We were so happy when we saw the photos – they really managed to capture the fun and the feeling of the whole day, as well as the incredible happiness we both felt.

On our wedding day, we really tried to relax and enjoy the day, as many friends had wisely advised us. It turns out we did just enough planning to do just that. The event took place in Jesse’s mom’s backyard… Well actually it stretched across three yards, luckily the neighbors were obliging and we held the ceremony in one neighbor’s yard, with a beautiful garden as a backdrop.

Being in the photography/wedding business we were able to gather around us a lot of friends who work in the industry. The food and event planning was put together by Chive Events in Beverly, MA. They throw gorgeous, locally sourced events that we had attended in the past, and knew they would be perfect. We told them we wanted a traditional New England backyard cookout crossed with a Downton Abbey style tea party! And they ran with it. For a time Jesse actually wanted a cookout. He was convinced we could get a bunch of hotdogs and hamburgers and set a few friends up on a big grill. That’s probably the only thing I put my foot down on. Our flowers were by Foret Design Studio in Somerville, MA. They also totally got the vibe. I gave them a loose color palette, and basically said to do whatever they thought was best. They did not disappoint! Our friend T.J. from Cape Ann Brewery poured a specially made-for-us beer, and Bennett from Downriver Ice Cream made us our own specially flavored ice cream (and also provided his large collection of bowties for the groom and his groomsmen). I love to bake, and had originally planned on baking enough pies for all of our guests in lieu of a cake, but Jesse convinced me to abandon that idea about a week before our big day. Thankfully, Petsi Pies in Somerville makes the loveliest pies, even on short notice.

Backyard Wedding in Cape Cod

Prep always looks fresh. Something about the simple nautical stripes and the salty ocean breeze prompts a sense of unfettered ease. And if you’re lucky enough to actually be on Cape Cod, it’s hands-down the way to go. This wedding, shot by Nicole Montmarquet, looks equal parts classy and laid-back (Also note the boating knot around the bouquet.) Love!

From the bride… I grew up on Cape Cod and Tom moved there with his family when he was 13, so we both consider it to be our home. It’s where we met, became best friends, and eventually fell in love! We knew an oceanfront wedding was a priority, but the details would make it our “dream wedding”. Our theme was nautical/old Cape Cod while being effortlessly romantic with a hint of classic Cape Cod prep.

We achieved this by offering Cape Cod favorites; a freshly-shucked oyster raw bar, locally brewed craft beers, a gourmet menu made with local ingredients, and a salt-water taffy bar! We also offered two specialty cocktails; the Dark & Stormy, and of course, the Cape Codder! Our color theme was ivory, dark navy blue, and a touch of blush pink. We used beautiful hand-crafted farm tables, bars, and beverage troughs, while incorporating preppy touches such as; message-in-a-bottle seating assignments, nautical knots as place card holders, and a custom-made oar instead of a traditional guest book.
We wanted our guests to see “us” in our wedding day. We received so much feedback regarding the little details and touches that made our wedding special and unique to us, our love, and our personalities. For example, we left the church in a traditional British black cab, an ode to our time spent living in London together. In addition to a spectacular DJ, my father’s band played, and he got everyone on the dance floor with bluegrass music (my favorite!). Although we stayed true to the classic and preppy theme, we tried to maintain a low-key vibe, because it matched our personalities perfectly. We knew that anyone who really knew “us”, would expect a comfortable, welcoming, and laid back wedding. Our wedding fit us perfectly, and it was so much fun to watch it all come together after months of planning. After years of moving to different states and countries together, it was so special to spend an entire weekend celebrating our love with our family and friends on beautiful Cape Cod!

Early Summer Wedding in the Berkshires

There are few settings more fitting to dedicate your life to someone than a grand estate with majestic hills gently unfolding into the horizon. Add in billowing canopies, a graceful color palate of subdue grays, purples, pinks, and an heirloom wedding ring, and that my friends is what dream weddings are made of. Thanks to Grazier Photography you can witness the entrancing nuptials below.

From Grazier Photography... We really enjoyed the time we spent with Rebecca and David. From the silliness at their engagement session to the constant smiles and loud laughs at their wedding, being around these two just makes a person feel good. Rebecca and David were married at The Wheatleigh Hotel in Lenox, MA on a gorgeous early summer day. Rebecca’s fabulous makeup by the talented Katrina Hess was perfect and Rebecca looked gorgeous from beginning to end. We were joined by the amazing Crocus Hale who decorated the venue with a pallet only she could devise – some of the floral elements were foraged in the White Mountains that morning. After portraits, David’s father and grandfather surprised him with a special gift of a family ring that has been handed down for generations. It was a very moving moment and I love the photo of the grandfather holding David’s hand after the ring was passed on.

Rustic New England Wedding

Ease and effortlessness are achieved only after a great deal of effort. Which is why when we come across a wedding as beautiful and considered as this, we take a moment to appreciate the finer details, like bridesmaids bouquets of succulents perfectly hued to the pink and grey color scheme. The wife/husband duo from Grazier Photography agree, and were lucky enough to be there to capture the event.

From Grazier Photography… Our favorite weddings are the ones where the couple gets a standing ovation when they exit the ceremony. Portia and Matt’s wedding was dreamy. We fell in love with these two long before their wedding day, and their celebration just cinched the deal. Portia added thoughtful and beautiful design elements at every turn – always imbued with meaning, natural beauty, and a sense of truth and authenticity. Everything was lovely but not overdone, tangible, and tied together with my new favorite Italian word ‘sprezzatura’: (Miriam Webster: ‘perfect conduct or performance of something (as an artistic endeavor) without apparent effort.’ They were good looking and they dressed sharp. But more important than decor or looks, they lived in the moment, savoring each part of the day with a profound sense of joy. Their relaxed and superbly happy attitude was infectious, and really drove home to my hubbie Matt and I as we worked that THIS is why we love to photograph weddings.

From the bride… Matt and I wanted a wedding venue and vendors that would highlight the natural beauty of the area and show our friends and family (many of whom had never visited New England) why we love living here.  When we visited the Willowdale Estate in Bradley Palmer State Park, we knew it would be the perfect location. It was elegant while still reflecting our easy-going attitude and love of the outdoors. We felt like ourselves there and knew our guests would feel welcomed and relaxed.

We didn’t want to compete with the natural beauty of the site so we opted for décor and flowers that reflected the area such as potted herbs, topiaries, and seasonal flowers. New England Country Rentals provided gorgeous farm tables, reclaimed wooden church pews, and chalkboards for the ceremony program and seating assignments.

Our good friend was kind enough to marry us, and our parents (who each share 35+ years of marriage!), siblings and closest friends stood beside us, which made our ceremony personal and intimate. We also made sure to include our dog “Georgia” as our “flower girl” -dressed in a fantastic flower collar made by E.H. Floral.

Our dinner was served station style and featured local/seasonal produce. This gave the evening a more relaxed feel and allowed guests to spend more time on the dance floor (celebrating National Dance Day!) District 21 kept the party going all night- seeing Matt’s grandparents dancing the night away with us was one of our favorite (and most inspiring) moments of the evening.  And just in case anyone is wondering how many bridesmaids can fit into the Grazier Photobooth….. the answer is 9…. trust me!

Backyard Cocktail Party Wedding

Not only did this adorable couple’s story start way back in elementary school, but they also shared their first ever slow dance in 6th grade (and you know that’s a big deal) ultimately making them the cutest couple around. Fast forward a few years and that slow dance turned into their first dance as husband and wife at their completely gorgeous backyard wedding, taking this love story full circle. Don’t miss all the perfect moments captured by Lisa Rigby Photography waiting for you here.

From the Bride…Spencer and I both grew up in Carlisle, Massachusetts, attending elementary school through high school together. In sixth grade, we were each other’s first-ever slow dance, and though we remained friendly throughout high school, we eventually lost touch. But then one fateful day in the fall of 2011, four years since we had last seen each other, Spencer and I bumped into each other taking a bus to the university where I was in my first year of social work school and he in his second year of law school.  After we had been dating for a year Spencer, under false pretenses, coaxed me back to our old middle school and proposed in the same gymnasium where we shared our first slow dance.

Spencer and I both thought there was something really romantic about getting married in the small town where we grew up. It was a very full-circle moment, and we knew that my parents’ home would provide the perfect setting for our day.

We wanted to keep our wedding informal and make it feel more like a nice backyard cocktail party. I wrote the table assignments on antique windows. Spencer set up areas for guests to play cornhole and croquet. Everything was geared towards encouraging our friends and family to move around, dance, mingle, and just have fun.

We absolutely loved the long, wooden farm tables, covered with hemstitched table runners. We wanted flowers everywhere — lots of small arrangements in mason jars, vintage tins, and glass milk bottles. Lighting was also really important to us; candles and lanterns played a large role in our decorative ambiance.  Before the ceremony, our ushers gave out beautiful vintage-inspired paper fans — a necessity for combatting the potential August heat.

But the weather, as with everything that day, worked out perfectly. And as amazing as all the decorations were, it was the love we shared with our friends and family that will always mean most to us.
