Elegant Fall Berkshires Estate Wedding at the Mount

A classic affair never fails to put me in my happy place. There is something about that timeless style that just seems to strike a cord, and this beauty from Sweet Monday is filled with all the reasons why. A royalty-worthy reception, a gorgeous couple, and too many pretty details to miss – perusing this gallery should be on the tippy top of your to-do list today. See more here

From Sweet Monday PhotographyKarin Tanabe and Craig Fischer were married at The Mount, Edith Wharton’s estate in the Berkshires this past October. Karin is a novelist herself, and it meant a great deal to her to get married someplace with such literary history. She wanted a wedding that felt personal and that she crafted herself (she taught herself calligraphy so that she could address all her invitations and paper goods for the wedding), but without the typical DIY feel and we think she pulled it off beautifully. The wedding was pure elegance and so fitting for the gorgeous venue.

Traditional Massachusetts Wedding at Saphire Estate

http://saphireeventgroup.com/venues/saphire-estateElegant in every sense of the word, this Saphire Estate wedding is just as gorgeous as they get. Complete with florals from Talvy Brothers Florist so pretty I want to squeal (hello peonies, I’m talking to you), perfectly planned details from Saphire Event Group and gorgeous images from Once Like A Spark Photography – it goes without saying, spending some time in this gallery is a must

From Saphire Event GroupSurrounded by family and friends, high school sweethearts Nicole and Greg exchanged vows during a traditional catholic mass at St. Mary’s in Foxborough, MA. The newly married couple arrived to their Saphire Estate reception in a stunning 1937 Cadillac that perfectly complimented the brides shimmering Lazaro gown. The gorgeous sun-filled spring day provided the perfect backdrop for stunning photos along picturesque Lake Massapoag and throughout the lush Saphire Estate gardens. A colorful palette of blue and green with touches of pink filled the ballroom. The couple’s main focus for their reception was having stations their guests would enjoy, including a photo booth, cannoli dessert station and a cigar roller with custom cigar bands designed by Greg’s dad. The signature drink, pear vodka with St. Germain and champagne, was selected by guests at Nicole and Greg’s engagement party. From the newlywed’s first dance to Sam Smith’s “Lay Me Down” to end of the night dance-offs, the event was truly a night to remember.

Modern Boston Wedding

From a very young age, I fell in love with the charm of Boston. The city has a quaintness and an all around love that is irresistible. So when our friends at Hyatt Regency Boston sent over this modern affair filled to the brim with love, sweeping views of my favorite city and a beautifully smiling Bride and Groom, I couldn’t help but pore over the lovely imagery from April K Photography. See the full gallery!

From the beautiful Bride… After Mike and I got engaged, I had some ideas on how I wanted the wedding to be. I explored the internet and magazines, but found it to be some what overwhelming. With a budget in mind, I read many reviews about different vendors and interviewed my top picks.

Boston has so many beautiful places to get married at, but our main problem was space, we needed a place that had a potential of holding over 300 people. Hyatt Regency Boston had everything we wanted; they newly renovated the ballroom and lobby area, had a beautiful terrace, price wise was the best out of all of the hotels we looked at, and the wedding coordinator (Christine) was absolutely fabulous. Christine guided us and kept us on track with the planning.

We weren’t sure if we wanted to stay “traditional” and see each other for the first time at the church or during the “First Look.” Since we didn’t have a lot of time between the church ceremony and cocktail hour we decided to have a First Look in the Public Gardens. It was such a beautiful sunny day in the Public Gardens, although it was packed with many visitors, they were kind enough to let us have our First Look on the bridge. I am so glad we did this because we were able to mingle with our guests during the cocktail hour.

From the moment I met April, from April K Photography, I knew she was the perfect match and had to be our photographer. Mike and I don’t like having our picture taken, but April made us feel so comfortable in front of the camera. April was very passionate about her work, had great energy and an endless imagination. She was able to capture all of great moments from the wedding; I am still in awe with all of our wedding pictures!

I had no idea about flowers besides my favorite flower being Peonies, but since my wedding was in August, I was not able to have Peonies. Greg from Flou(-e)r was fantastic. He went through every single flower that was available in August to find me the perfect combinations for my bouquets and centerpieces. He had patience with me especially when I was unsure of which flowers to pick and didn’t mind when I changed the flower combinations several times. The flowers in the bouquets, boutonnières and centerpieces were bursting with the most perfect looking flowers and absolutely beautiful.

Our DJ, Peter from Groove Entertainment, was awesome and so easy to work with from the moment we hired him. He played all of the music we wanted and stayed clear of the songs/genre we didn’t like. Peter was very energetic, got everyone on their feet dancing and kept the party going all night.

I wanted to get Mike the best groom’s gift. Mike being a HUGE Bruins hockey fan, I knew I had to get Rene Rancourt to surprise him at the wedding. No one knew about the surprise besides my parents, brother, Christine and Peter. Peter was so excited to introduce Rene. He had everyone on their feet with their hands over their heart, told Mike that he liked his Bruins cufflinks that I got him (Mike was confused because he didn’t show them to Peter) and introduced Rene Rancourt. The room went crazy! Mike was ecstatic (and the guest also!). Rene Rancourt stayed for a while and was available to have his picture taken showing off the 2011 Bruins Stanley Cup Championship Ring.

After Mike’s surprise, my parents surprised us with a Lion Dance. The lion dance is usually performed on special occasions. The dance scares away evil spirits and brings happiness, longevity, and good luck.

Our vendors played such a huge part in our wedding day and to this day, we still stay in touch with a few of them. Mike and I are so happy with the way our wedding turned out. We wanted our guest to have a blast and we think we accomplished it!

Chic Backyard Wedding in Beverly, Massachusetts

An intimate backyard wedding filled to the brim with chic stylings and love? Sign me up. You’ll want to sign yourself up too when you see all the sweet images from Ebersole Photography, because there is no resisting the sweetness sitting in this gallery, and you can see what I mean here.

From The Bride…Sandy is originally from Baltimore and I’m from Beverly, Massachusetts. We met in Brooklyn, while he was in grad school for architecture and I was making my first music videos (I’m a filmmaker). But we bonded on a rock-climbing trip with mutual friends: playing new music for each other, singing and car-dancing the whole ride. We began dating and eventually moved to Los Angeles together, where we currently live.

We decided to have our wedding at my parents house in Beverly, MA, which is a really unique historic house. Planning the wedding, our focus was on having an epic dance party with amazing music which celebrated our two big families. We were married at Manchester First Parish church, which has great acoustics and a beautiful room-shaking organ. My talented sister Kat and bridesmaid Kelly, a bluegrass musician, sang a beautiful acoustic version of an Adele song, and Sandy’s cousin played Spanish Guitar. In addition, the Beverly High School Vocal Ensemble sang three beautiful acapella songs, including “In “Do you Realize” by the Flaming Lips. I still can’t believe that actually happened. The choral director Lyn is now my personal hero.

For the reception, we hired “Madhouse,” a soulful mo-town band that kept us dancing all night. My sister and Kelly both sang with the band for different songs: Kelly did a beautiful slow-dance version of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” for our first dance, and everyone began singing along. It was a moment. Kat made a hilarious vampy entrance from a balcony, singing “Love me Like a Man,” which pretty much brought down the house with the help of a family friend Gabe on saxophone. We gave all the guests mix-CDs as party favors, which included songs from that fateful rock-climbing road trip. For the decor, we never really had a strict color scheme, just black bridesmaid dresses with gorgeous colorful flower arrangements by Chapmans florist. This included a flower crown, which we paired with a beautiful veil sewn by my Aunt Priscilla. My parents Jen and Gary and my mother’s friends, “The Design Team,” as we called them, all pitched in to decorate the tent with candles and borrowed chandeliers. In addition, Sandy’s parents threw an amazing Rehearsal Dinner the night before, with decor provided by Sandy’s Aunts and Uncles.

The best part of our wedding was bringing together so many wonderful, fun-loving people. The energy in the room was pumping with love and excitement and we danced long after the band stopped. It was such a whirlwind, we are so happy Daniel was there to beautifully capture this phenomenal experience.

Classic Summer Wedding at the Boston Public Library

The Boston Public Library is one of my very favorite spots in the city that just so happens to play backdrop to this summertime “I do.” Think stately architecture, grand staircases, and one wildly in love couple completely managing to steal the show. Erin McGinn worked her magic behind the lens, and the gallery is nothing but classic wedding bliss.

From Erin McGinn… A classic and timeless summer affair at the Boston Public Library has to top the list of dream weddings. Amanda and Paul planned a stunning wedding incorporating their favorite things. One of the highlights for me to photograph was Amanda’s dress. Custom made by Daniel Faucher Couture from her family (the Adams)’s heirloom lace, it was incorporated into her gown and veil. So special and so meaningful. With a large wedding party, Amanda let me know she chose the serene colors of the bridesmaids dresses for their calming nature.

From the Bride… We wanted a bit of a ‘blended’ wedding- although we both grew up in the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts Amanda spent many of her summers on Cape Cod, Massachusetts and Paul spent much of his winters in Warren, Vermont. Because of the importance of our roots, our wedding takes a little bit of the Boston suburban feel, mixes it with Boston urban and then meshes that with Vermont rustic and traditional Cape Cod.

Family is very important to us so we also wanted a venue that could comfortably manage our large families. The Boston Public Library seemed the perfect fit- located in the heart of Boston it has an urban vibe from the outside, but the interior is serene and relaxed. Combine our choice of food (some comfort food, some wine and cheese pairings, some middle eastern fare), a lively band that can play traditional music as well as modern rock and hip hop, and throw in some Cape Cod decor and we think we’ve created the perfect feel for us.

Vintage Inspired DIY Wedding

Weddings like this make me happy.  You know the ones I am talking about – they’re rich in gorgeous DIY details, filled with love from an awesome (+ talented) group of family and friends and are high on whimsy.  Basically, they’re the perfect combination of non-stop fun and pretty, and when they are captured in beautiful images by Jenny Moloney Photography, well… even better.  See it all right here.

From The Bride…My husband and I love Wellfleet, Cape Cod, for its rustic, natural beauty. We thought Wellfleet would be a unique getaway for our family and friends. Instead of just a single day we could plan a week of celebrations, from picnics at Long Pond, to a beach bonfire, to swimming in the bay. My husband, who grew up in Connecticut, has visited Wellfleet since he was a child and I’ve become very fond of Wellfleet in the past six years since we started dating and visiting the Cape. Because we live in California we had to plan the wedding long distance. This was certainly a challenge, but once we booked Wellfleet’s Preservation Hall for our ceremony and reception, the rest of the details began to fall into place.

The hall, once a church, was built in 1912. Coincidentally, my engagement ring (a family heirloom) is also from that year, so it only made sense that I wear a dress from the teens. Before booking the hall I tried a variety of dresses, from a modern strapless sheath, to a glamorous 40’s dress, to a rather gaudy beaded ball gown. After a fruitless search for the perfect dress in antique stores and vintage boutiques I won my Edwardian gown on Ebay for $148. Yep! When I first tried on the stained, wrinkled, but lovingly hand embroidered dress, I felt like it was tailored for me 100 years ago.

With the hall and dress in place, I knew I wanted a lot of rustic and romantic details. My family and friends were there to help, every step of the way. A bunch of family friends helped me assemble the burlap runners and bunting; we had a bunch of sewing parties before the wedding. I made the guest book by hollowing out an antique French novel and binding it with new pages. My father made the doorknob table number holders (we’re keeping the antique doorknobs for a future home). I designed and sewed the wedding mice. The beeswax candles we used in our ceremony were dipped at my bridal shower by my bridesmaids and friends. The chuppah was built out of birch by my father and husband. And, last but not least, my incredible brass crown was created by welder and childhood friend, James Naish.

I’m normally not a smiley person, but from the beginning of my wedding day to the end I was grinning. How could I not? So many people came together to make our wedding day special. Chandler Travis Philharmonic, our wedding band, was truly amazing. If you’re ever in Wellfleet be sure to check them out. I had not one, but two florists, one from Boston and one from the Cape. This is because I originally thought we could buy flowers from a local gardener and arrange them ourselves in all the vintage jars and vases I’d collected. In the midst of a heat wave, arranging flowers would have been a disaster. I’m so glad I let Sharyn Lindsay take over. She’s a true fairy godmother, spreading flower magic wherever she goes. Visiting her Wellfleet garden a few days before the wedding was a delight. The desserts were made by my husband’s childhood friend and owner of the Hartford Baking Company in West Hartford, Connecticut. Our ceremony musicians were friends, including my lovely maid of honor, Laura Weinbach of the Bay Area band Foxtails Brigade. She wrote and sang lyrics to a song my father composed. As for my hair and makeup, after a disastrous appointment at a local salon where I walked out looking like a pageant contestant, my bridesmaids and friends took over, transforming me into a polished version of myself. It goes without saying that Jenny Moloney was the perfect photographer to capture our celebration. When I look at our wedding photos I feel like I’m transported back to that day.

I have too many favorite memories to pare them down to just one. One of those moments was dancing with my father. He swayed like a dancing bear, sashaying me exuberantly across the dance floor. I laughed so hard my ribs hurt. Another favorite moment was dancing with my new husband at the end of the night. The whole band surrounded us, serenading us ever so softly, and around them were all our family and friends. We were completely surrounded, encircled, by love. And a final favorite moment was our midnight swim in the bay after the wedding. I will never forget swimming in my slip, crown, and engagement ring, my husband and a few friends by my side. I felt like a queen, if only for that moment, floating under the moon. After the swim was a rather chilly walk back to our inn, as husband and wife.

From The Bride…The theme/concept was DIY Rustic Vintage. We wanted our wedding to reflect Alex and I in every way, and have unique and memorable aspects that touched our family and friends throughout the wedding day. We most of all wanted everyone to experience in the pure love and happiness, we were sharing that day in our commitment to each other. We fell in love with the rustic and romantic setting of Moraine Farm and knew it was our perfect venue to say “I do” and start our lives together. We shared our hand written vows to share with each other and our friends and family, which brought us and everyone else to tears (in the highlight video).

My mom, myself and maid of honor put a lot of work into every detail that was DIY including the signage, flowers, my dress, the family “tree”, programs, table names and centerpieces. I even wanted to make our signature drinks unique to us by naming them around our personalities the “Bubbly Bradley” and “Murphy Mule”. Throughout the day we had a subtle theme of A&A (Aidan and Alex), with wooden letters and & throughout the property as well as a large metal A&A.

My mom made the all the centerpieces from scratch and the flower arrangements (18!) as well as the Audrey Hepburn signage “The Best Thing in Life to Hold onto is Each other”, one of my most favorite quotes. We wanted to do something different than table numbers that we see at every wedding, so we decided on words that describe marriage (wonderful, love, forever, friendship). We made these as well.

Alex’s dad made us the wooden signage / guest board, and the birch trellis we got married under from a mere vision I had and they came out perfect! Alex’s Mom made our cake and all the desserts for the guests. My maid of honor designed the welcome sign for the ceremony, the appetizer sign and bar signs listing the signature drinks.

We met as neighbors in South Boston, we both had dogs and would run into each walking them around the block, from our first date we hit it off and knew we were the perfect fit we had been searching for. Alex makes me laugh every single day and still gives me those same butterflies he did when I first met him years ago. He pushes me to do better, be better and is a constant rock and support system when I need it most. Everyday is an adventure together, and we’re so excited to be joined as an official family now and someday start ours.

Since I was a little girl I dreamed of remaking my mother and grandmother’s dress into something of my own, after the ring when it was my turn to go “dress” shopping my mom and I both were so excited to create a unique work of art that was a family heirloom and had so much special meaning. I mean, when else in your life can you design a dress of your dreams that has so much special meaning.

My mother, Nancy wore the dress October 1st, 1977 when she married my dad Kevin. Before that, my Nana Betty Stangle wore the dress October 9th, 1940 when she married Frank. On May 24th, I wore my very own newly designed version to marry Alex. (We displayed before photos of the dress at cocktail hour for guests to see the transformation).

Since we met walking our dogs, and our dogs are such a big part of our life, we wanted to donate to our local animal shelter in lieu of favors. Also, Alex’s dog Charlie was a rescue dog. After going to so many weddings together, we both thought a donation favor is a nice reminder to give back to the community.

Alex and I both love good food, especially local farm-to-table. Elaine, Alex’s mother is a chef at a farm to table restaurant so it is very near and dear to our hearts, eating organic local foods. We are happy to say all the food served at our wedding was from Fireside Catering and farm to fork.

Most importantly, we wanted everyone to experience a lovely, unique and memorable wedding while feeling like family, both coming from two large Irish families (Bradley and Murphy), we really wanted it to seem like an intimate close family affair/celebration of love although there was 175 people, I think we really were able to make everyone feel the love and apart of our big day.

Fall Wedding in Amherst, Massachusetts

There’s nothing like Fall in New England. It’s total perfection, made even more so by this pretty Amherst affair captured by  Sorella Muse Photography. The brides envisioned a relaxed garden party and that is exactly what they got, complete with fresh-picked bouquets from the local flower farm. Friends, family and whole lot of love; that’s just what you’ll find in the full gallery.

From Sorella Muse PhotographyEmily and Katie’s vision for their wedding was “the last garden party of summer” and that’s exactly what their day felt like. They also knew their would be wildflowers and mason jars, two things that they both love. They wanted community to be at the heart of their wedding, as much as their love story. These are two women who deeply value and cherish community, and have built theirs in a thoughtful, genuine way. That sense of community was felt throughout their wedding, from a dear friend officiating to readings during the ceremony, to the most beautiful toasts from friends during the reception. And their schedule was created in such a way that the day unfolded at a slow and leisurely pace, nothing rushed or hurried, allowing for them to really spend time individually with their friends and family.

In the morning Emily and her sister Camille went to a flower farm where they have gone since they were little girls to pick flowers. The plan was to pick enough flowers from the cutting garden for three bouquets. But when we arrived, they explained that the cutting garden was closed for the season. What almost ended as a floral disaster was quickly rescued–when they found out it was for Emily’s wedding, they sent Emily and Camille to the display garden, and not only that, they gave all the flowers cut to her as a wedding present! It was such a lovely, sweet start to the day.

Emily got ready at her mother’s home in Amherst, doing her own make-up and hair, then slipping into a dress that was classic and simple. She wore a birdcage veil and an heirloom necklace. Both brides wore red shoes. Katie put the finishing touches to her J.Crew attire at the Lord Jeffrey Inn and then walked with her brother to the Amherst Woman’s Club, a historic house that served as a classic venue for their relaxed garden party wedding.

After an incredibly sweet first look on the wide lawn in front of the house, they mingled with guests before their ceremony started. At the end of the ceremony, Emily and Katie jumped the broom–an African American tradition that dates back to slavery, signifying a leap into a new life together.

Rustic Fall Wedding

I’m a complete sucker for rustic romance, so give me a day filled with burlap, mason jars and golden apples (yes, golden apples) and you’ll see one very, very happy lady.  Then set all of those awesome details up against a crazy cool barn setting and throw in a bride and groom who are the epitome of adorable and it basically can’t be beat.  See every moment captured by Leah Haydock in the full gallery.

And a little extra special treat… the gorgeous film from the always amazing Long Haul Films.  Enjoy, lovelies.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/78223856 600 338]

From The Bride… Mike and I met while living in Boston after college. Mike won me over with his playfulness and charm. He would do little things like bring me coffee when I was studying or leave flowers on the windshield of my car. He is quite the charmer and continues to do these little things to show me he cares every day! We have been together for four years now, and were married on September 13th at the Red Lion Inn in Cohasset. I’m one lucky gal.

I have always been a romantic. I love anything and everything soft, pretty and chic. I also love that rustic feel, so when I saw the Red Lion Inn barn with all the wooden beams and floors, I could imagine the candles glowing and people dancing and it made me get all warm and fuzzy inside. We incorporated apples throughout the wedding, with apple cake pop favors and spray painted sparkly apples, because we got engaged on an apple orchard last October. I love the look of chalkboards, so we used a lot of chalkboard signs throughout the wedding which my sister designed. One of the best parts of my day was walking into the barn and seeing it all come together. You have this vision in your head of what it will be like, and to be honest, it was more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. It was the best day ever!

It’s hard to decide on a favorite moment from the day. From getting ready with my girls, to our First Look, to riding on the trolley with our wedding party, it was all so fun! I would have to say, though, I think being pronounced husband and wife and looking out into the crowd of all of our friends and family cheering for us, was a moment I will always remember. We had an “Unplugged Ceremony” where we encouraged our guests not to use their phones or cameras to take pictures, so when we looked out into the crowd we saw everyone smiling back at us – it was truly awesome.

I can confidently say that we had the best combination of vendors. Everything about the day went smoothly and I never felt like I was stopping to answer questions or tell people where to go. Everyone we worked with was so professional and had one common goal: to make us happy. Our photographer, Leah Haydock, was amazing and had a huge part in making the day go smoothly. Her photos are absolutely beautiful and I am already trying to come up with reasons to have her photograph us again! Our videographers, Long Haul Films, just won “Best of Boston,” and rightfully so. They are so good at being there without you even knowing it and we can hardly wait to see our wedding film! Our band, Groove Authority, kept the dance party going all night long. Literally, people did not even want to sit down and eat their dinner because they just wanted to dance! Our flowers from Les Fleurs in Andover were gorgeous and Kerianne was so wonderful to work with! Jen Tawa Hair Design and Dani Wagener Makeup were both such a pleasure to work with and made myself and all of my bridesmaids feel beautiful! I feel like we had a wedding day dream team!

If I had one piece of advice to give future brides, it would be to make sure to stop and take it all in. All of the prepping, planning, shopping… everything you have done to make this day happen has come together and it is so awesome to see. Make sure you stop to take in all the details. Make sure you stop to take in all the little moments with your husband. Most importantly, make sure you stop to take in that beautiful space, whether it be a barn, a ballroom, a tent or a backyard and soak in that feeling that all of the people you love are in that one place at the same time, and they are there for you! It is a feeling like no other.

New England Nautical meets West Coast Whimsical Inspiration

What would summer be without a great beach party or, in this instance, a pretty seaside wedding? Crafted by The Little ThingsSweet Annie Floral Design, and imagery by Ruth Eileen, this inspiration pulls the essence of the West Coast and the East Coast and blends them into a nautical meets whimsical affair by the sea. It’s a land where lobsta dinners and floral laden bicycles go hand in hand.

From Ruth Eileen PhotographyThe theme for this shoot was “New England Nautical meets West Coast Whimsical,” and the idea behind it was to take a classic New England fete and infuse it with some west coast flair! We envisioned our couple eloping and celebrating with a simple but stellar reception a deux, one that they could pull off themselves without too much effort. We began by brainstorming which New England elements we’d include: a lobster bake, nautical rope, the groom in a preppy bowtie, oysters and anchors, and some classic New England florals: coral charm peonies, anemones, and hydrangea. Then, we decided on our West Coast elements: a bohemian-style pallet table, air plants, ferns, and (of course!) a custom beach cruiser! With the vision in mind and design plan in place, we assembled an amazing team of collaborators who really took to the vision and brought this shoot to life! Anna and Caitlin from Paper Moss designed custom menus, elopement announcements, and drink stirrers to commemorate the day. Bethany and Sean from Shindig events provided individual lobster bake pots (and New England clam chowder served in mini mason jars!), Katie from Sweet Annie Floral Design created the stunning bouquet and centerpiece, and stuffed the groom’s pocket with looser, fresh florals for a fun twist on a boutonniere. Shara from Chickadee Hill Cakes designed the beautiful cakes, and our bride Shayna, in her stunning BHLDN gown, was made beautiful by Tara ad TADA Makeup and outfitted with a nautical Porcelain and Stone handmade porcelain and gold chain-link necklace. Laura from Laura Hooper Calligraphy so beautifully penned this JFK quote onto our piece of navy blue Irish linen: “All of us have, in our veins, the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean and therefore, we all have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or watch it, we are going back from whence we came.” Our couple rode off into the sunset on their beach cruiser that Alexis from The Little Things scooped off of Craigslist and customized in white and gold for the shoot. Alexis and Katie wired florals to the cruiser’s spokes (and learned a lesson in patience along the way!), and Katie filled the basket to the brim with the most beautiful flowers. Heartwarming Garden Wedding

What can I say about this wedding other than that it is utterly perfect?  The kind of perfect where a laid-back vibe and all sorts of pretty join forces in a party that is all about celebrating one seriously awesome duo (the bride happens to be a crazy cool officiant) and their amazing friends and family.  It’s heartwarming to the max, lovelies.  See it all captured by Chattman Photography right here.

From the Bride… I’ve worked in the wedding industry for many years and know how monotonous weddings can get, but as an ordained Interfaith minister, helping couples to craft one-of-a-kind wedding ceremonies, I also know the best a wedding can be.

Every single detail of our wedding reflected us, and most of it we did ourselves and with the help of family and friends; from the invitations I designed (licensing the work of a local artist) to the flowers we bought by the bucket from a local farm for my mother-in-law to arrange. We were even lucky enough to be friends with our amazing photographer, Joanna Chattman, and with Carla Caruso Jewelry, who made my pearl and diamond necklace and earring set as well as our wedding bands.

Our ceremony was truly the heart of our wedding and many, many guests told us afterward it was the most beautiful they’d ever witnessed. Whitney Acres, a local farm, let us use one of their fields for our ceremony, haying it just before our wedding so the air smelled fresh and summery. My brothers assembled our wedding arch there, which now stands in our front yard.

Everyone loved the blessing ribbons. It gave our guests something to do before the ceremony began and included them in physically creating the sacred space by hanging their ribbon on lines strung from either side of the wedding arch. We felt surrounded by their love and blessings during the entire ceremony, and we moved them with us to the reception tent, too. (Plus they made a great backdrop!) Now they’re decorating our baby’s room (due mid-April!).

Both sets of our grandparents have passed away and my father died when I was 10, so honoring family, ancestors and lineage was really important to us. We asked family members to bring photographs of these loved ones, which we then arranged along a stone wall near the entrance to the field. Guests told us they spent a lot of time lingering over the photographs, reminiscing and guessing who was who. My first tears of the day were shed as we paused there on our entrance.

We also wanted to include a special ritual in the ceremony to honor our lost loved ones. We asked our parents to come up, one at a time, and say the names of their parents, ringing a singing bowl after each name. My stepfather said my father’s parents’ names, and my brother said the name of our own father. I know many couples are worried about feeling too emotional at their wedding, but, aside from our vows, the ancestor ritual was the most powerful part of the ceremony. Many, many guests were moved to tears (as was I), and many spoke to me afterward about how much they loved this ritual in particular.

Alexander and I decided not to have a wedding party, so we felt it was important to include our brothers and sister in the ceremony. We chose readings for each of them that we knew would be meaningful to them, too. (I’m happy to share which poems/readings we chose!) We also asked one of Alexander’s oldest friends, a musician, to play one of our favorite songs just before we took our wedding vows.

Though we got ready separately (by the way, my dress zipper broke and I had to be sewn in at the last minute!), it was really wonderful to make the long walk to the ceremony together. I treasure those moments we had alone, and then our hearts leaping at sight of all our cherished friends and family gathered for us. We had the children following us with bubbles, which was a great activity for them and made for some wonderful pictures, too!

It was also really important that we stood together during the ceremony, not separated between the officiant as is traditional. I loved holding hands and feeling really connected throughout the ceremony. We had our friend/officiant stand aside while we took our vows and exchanged rings so that it really felt like we married each other.

Our reception was at The Curtis House, a short walk from the ceremony site. Gloria Pacosa, owner of The Curtis House, was also our event coordinator (that’s her sewing me into the dress!). We rented antique mismatched china and silverware from her, as well as vintage water pitchers and salt and pepper shakers. The tables were very homey and eclectic, yet elegant. We hung all the lanterns and string lights and made all the bouquets using vases I’d spent a year collecting from thrift shops. My mother also spent a year collecting antique brass candlesticks for the tables, and also making the homemade jam we gave as wedding favors (boy, were those a huge hit with our guests!).

My husband’s family is Greek so we served Greek white wine and our food was Greek-Mediterranean – simple, fresh and summery. A friend also made a special batch of “A & H Love” hard cider. Our biggest splurge was probably the band, but since we love to dance it seemed well worth the expense. The 5-piece jazz/soul group was assembled by local musician friend Jon Fisher and featured New Orleans vocalist Samirah Evans. They rocked the house, and dancing alone to “At Last” was definitely a highlight of the whole day.

A wedding is one of the greatest opportunities you’ll ever have to publicly express who you are. So celebrate it! Exploit it! Take full advantage of the chance to have one day in your life be about being who you really are with those you really love. What an extraordinary opportunity.

Whimsical Barn Wedding at Gibbet Hill

One evergreen piece of advice I read over and over is to know your priorities. Really reflect, choose, commit. For this pair, number one was passionate vendors and yummy, locally sourced, food (I mean, the bride founded Nella Pasta). The result, besides total bliss, was one pretty-as-can-be rustic dream wedding, thanks to help from Mstarr Event Design and Megan Braemore Photography‘s lens. See it all here.

From the Bride… Jordan and I met during our freshman year of high school and instantly formed a friendship. After 14 years filled with on and off romance, and one adorable puppy later, we finally decided to tie the knot!

We instantly fell in love with The Barn at Gibbet Hill. We wanted a rustic and romantic wedding that truly captured our love story. We always envisioned an outdoor ceremony with an indoor reception at the same location. It had the rustic New England charm we were looking for complete with castle ruins, a rolling countryside and an elegant barn. Most importantly, we wanted a sustainable meal sourced with local and seasonal ingredients. Overall, our goal was to have a truly unforgettable wedding not only for ourselves but for all our family and friends.

We truly enjoyed the wedding planning process. We did a lot of online research to pick our vendors and logged some serious hours on our iPad’s! After scouring websites, blogs, and reviews I knew I wanted a team with a similar entrepreneurial spirit to myself. I started my own food company, Nella Pasta, 5 years ago and I understand the passion it takes to pursue your dream. It was important to us that each of our vendors loved what they did and were actively pursuing their passion because it only makes the end product that much more special. In the end, it was exactly that. Each vendor played a key role in the success of the day bringing their true talents to make our day perfect! We are so thankful for each of them.

With such a beautiful backdrop, we decided to keep our color palette light and neutral with slight pops of color. We wanted a truly romantic and rustic touch so the centerpieces alternated between tiered candles on gold rustic wood and stunning florals. When it was time for the ceremony, the guests were shuttled up to the top of the hill and enjoyed wooden signs we had placed along the ride up with cute sayings that read one thing on the way up and something else on the way down.

We wanted to keep some things traditional so we did not do a first look. Instead, we embraced the anticipation of seeing one another for the first time as I walked down the aisle. We built up the moment not only for ourselves but for all our family and friends. Our bridal party consisted of our closest family and friends from childhood, high school, college, our siblings, and even my mother who stood as my matron of honor. I was a flower girl in my parents wedding so I knew I wanted my mom to also play dual roles in my wedding and stand proudly by my side.

The morning of the wedding, the girls and I enjoyed a mimosa bar and delicious breakfast treats, and we sipped and snacked while getting our hair and makeup done. The boys had it easy by playing 9 holes at a local golf course in Groton!

My advice to all is to just enjoy the process and have fun with it! And of course, take in every second of your wedding day because it goes by quick. But if you have a great team to document the day, it will always be unforgettable!

From Mstarr Event Design… I had been itching for some clients to get married at The Barn at Gibbet Hill. Enter the super sweet Rachel and Jordan who have actually known each other since high school. Rachel is the owner of Nella Pasta, makers of (yummy!) pasta using local and seasonal ingredients so we knew that organic elements would be a major component on the design front. Among other details, that translated to herb escort cards and favors (grown locally by one of Rachel’s colleagues), one heck of a head table with a barn board top  and a lush floral runner, sage accents at the place settings, and reclaimed wood and  candle centerpieces on half of the guest tables.

Gibbet Hill is a truly idyllic setting, particularly its grounds. Rachel and Jordan chose to do the ceremony in the ruins of General William Bancroft’s castle. not everyone chooses this spot, and while it requires transportation for guests (provided by the venue, of course!), let me tell you…it. is. worth. it. You’re transported to what feels like the Irish countryside and that drive up and down the hill was complete with grazing cows brought in specifically for the ceremony and custom wood signs Rachel commissioned from a vendor on Etsy.

We kept the decor simple,  enhancing all that the venue, and time of year, had to offer. My most favorite being were the terra cotta pots for the herbs that we gold leafed. Everything is better with gold, no?

Elegant Estate Wedding In Ipswich

Few towns fit the New England Colonial aesthetic more than Ipswich, and there are few weddings that fit in with that timelessness as seamlessly as these nuptials at the Crane Estate. There’s a whole gallery of highbrow details like  the bride’s lace Lea Ann Belter gown against a perfectly manicured bouquet of white roses and peonies. Lucky us, we get to see it all through A Guy + A Girl Photography‘s lens.

From A Guy + A Girl Photography….Susannah was the most elegantly beautiful bride; her hair loosely woven into twists, her lace gown fitting perfectly. Patrick was as dapper as could be in his classic tux. The pair had a softly subtle elegance that flowed between each other throughout the fabulous crane estate in Ipswich, Massachusetts all day.

Rustic Glamour At Brooksby Farm

This, folks, is the cream of the rustic crop. Every detail from the bride’s feathered hair piece from PowderBlueBijoux, florals from Maureen At Stop And Shop, and mercury glass abound, all against the backdrop of the Smith Barn makes for the perfect ratio of glamour to bucolic abandon. Better yet, we get to relive all the fun thanks to these lovely candids from Servidone Studios.  See it all here.

From the Bride: Although we wouldn’t consider ourselves “partyers,” Billy and I like to have fun with the people we love the most. Therefore, when planning our wedding, we wanted to throw one big party full of love. Smith Barn at Brooksby Farm had the perfect laid back atmosphere with the most beautiful back drop. While maintaining a casual and rustic vibe, we wanted to keep it chic with neutral colors and touches of gold and glitter (because we, too, believe that gold makes everything better). I started gathering mercury glass votives, vases and other pieces that would compliment the barn’s already existing beams wrapped in little white lights. A couple of gold spray paint cans were put to use on mason jars and other decor including a homemade monogram. Everything came together when our band, The Wild Ones, knew exactly what we wanted. Having a mainly “younger” crowd, the band played top 40 hits and kept the party going all night. The party continues as we relive the most perfect day through our photographer, Servidone Studios. Andrea captured the day exactly how we wanted to remember it: relaxed, fun, candid, happy, beautiful.

Classic New England Wedding at Tupper Manor

With Tupper Manor being mere miles from my very own home, I instantly recognized the vast views when Arielle Doneson sent this seaside soiree along. Not only does this stunning venue set the scene for timeless elegance, but it served as a perfect backdrop for the Bride and Groom’s simple, relaxed vision and the wildly beautiful blooms from Pepperberry’s Flowers. See so much more in the gallery.

From the beautiful Bride… From the day Todd proposed, I started combing Style Me Pretty for wedding ideas – I had no idea what our wedding would look like! It was only once we found Tupper Manor that the vision really came together. Todd and I both knew that we wanted the venue to be close to the ocean, have accommodations on-site, and have a timeless feel…and Tupper Manor had all of that and more. We never really developed a “theme”, but wanted the day to be relaxed, elegant, and a lot of fun!

I found my dress before we even started looking for a venue – it was the first one I tried on. I wanted something that could work in a castle, or on the beach. The dress was light and comfortable, and I felt really beautiful. It was also important to me that my girls were really comfortable. After one of my (very patient) bridesmaids tried on over 30 dresses, we landed on the JCrew dark cove chiffon and knew they would be perfect, and re-wearable! The guys looked great as well in classic black tuxes.

The beautiful, old world feel of Tupper Manor inspired us to keep our decor relatively simple. We included silver and gold metallic accents with mercury glass and gold table numbers, lots of candlelight, and we really let the venue do the rest. For the flowers, I wanted them to look “deconstructed” and just picked from the garden. Donna at Pepperberry’s read my mind! The flowers we’re incredibly varied, and included hints of the blue and peach/coral we had chosen as our colors. Walking down the aisle felt like walking through a spring garden – the flowers were just gorgeous.

All of our other vendors were top notch. I have been a customer (and friend) of Interlocks for years, and everyone there made the day so special. We were totally pampered! DJ Josh was fantastic from the day we booked him without even meeting him first. He kept the crowd up and moving the whole time. The cake was DELICIOUS – Jenny of Jenny’s Cakes and Donna at Pepperberry’s collaborated to make it look like it was really blooming. Arielle Doneson was just wonderful…she managed the day (and the bridal party) with a smile, and we know our photos are going to be treasured. Last but not least, Tupper Manor was incredibly professional and accommodating throughout the process; we would recommend them to anyone looking for a top notch North Shore venue.

Our only struggle was the favor dilemma – favors, no favors, what would people actually use? In the end, we decided to make a donation to the ALS Association in memory of my dad. We felt this was a great way to honor him, and recognize that even though he wasn’t there physically, he was definitely there in spirit.

The day flew by, but it truly felt perfect. From the getting ready process, to the personalized ceremony, to the amazing food and the party that continued into the night, we could not have imagined a better day. We are so excited to start the next chapter of our lives, and so thankful to our vendors, friends, and family for helping us start it off just right!

Elegant Winter Wedding In Boston

This Boston pair put their beautiful nuptials together in just 5 short months — sans planner. Aside from a strong sense of dedication, everything came together with an incredible set of vendors starting out with invites from Rug Road Paper, and finishing out with a scrumptious cake from Flour Baker. And, of course, lovely pictures from Alison Conklin Photography for us to enjoy. See it all here.

From the Bride… Planning a wedding, without a wedding planner, in five months may sound crazy, but when Bryan proposed after four years of dating we both knew we didn’t want to wait long. In the end, every detail fell into place, and we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day!

We wanted everything about the day to feel “like us,” a term that was used quite often throughout those five months. We wanted it to be small, with only close friends and family, and we knew we needed to have delicious food! As we went through the planning process, we found inspiration through blogs such as Style Me Pretty. And, with the help of very talented friends and loved ones, our vision came to fruition. We were lucky enough to find the perfect place for the ceremony through a gracious friend who let us use his gallery on Newbury Street. We fell in love with art and each other at the MFA Boston, so it was a perfect fit. A very dear friend, and husband of one of my bridesmaids, married us in front of family in a small ceremony. Then, we were joined by the rest of our friends at Bistro du Midi, one of our favorite restaurants in the city.

We are both so grateful to have such wonderful families and dear friends, many of whom traveled distances to share in our day. And, for our vendors, who went above and beyond to make our wedding day exceeded our expectations!

From Denise Farwell of Emilie Inc. PhotographyRenee and George came to us by way of Sara and Brett, whose wedding I second shot with Emilie in 2011. Renee was one of Sara’s bridesmaids, and the wedding was a special treat for me to photograph because it was held at Sara’s family home, which included a barn complete with a horse and mini donkey! It was such a fun night and I knew that anyone who was in that circle of family and friends would be someone I’d like. I didn’t get a chance to formally meet Renee and George at that wedding, so I was looking forward to meeting them both when I showed up at Misselwood in Beverly, Massachusetts. I walked into where the girls were getting ready and was so happy to see familiar faces, including Sarah and her sister Megan, that I didn’t even see Renee sitting with her mom in the corner! But as soon as we said hello I just instantly liked her. You can’t not, really. She is warm, funny, and does not take herself too seriously.

I went outside after the ladies were done getting ready as the guests were milling around before the ceremony, and introduced myself to George. What a NICE guy. I know a lot of people are described that way, but George might actually be the nicest. I definitely could see how these two ended up together.

After a sweet (and hot!) ceremony, guests filtered into the tent and were treated to some touching, and pretty hilarious toasts. Renee’s side of the family had a tradition I had never seen before, drinking from a German toasting cup. It has hinged cups on both ends, so the couple can have sips of champagne at the same time. George is Greek, so his family was represented in the seating chart that was displayed on an abacus. Such fun ways to incorporate both of their families histories. This crowd was a dancing crowd, and kept things going until the very last song, which was a great way to end the night.

Renee and George, I had such a great time with you and hope you’re having an amazing time on your Hawaiian honeymoon by way of Napa Valley!

From The Bride…I had just finished my last day of teaching for the school year and was so ready to celebrate the start of summer with some girlfriends. It was a gorgeous night, so we headed to Charlestown’s Tavern on the Water for drinks and dinner. George and his pals had headed to the same place for the same reason, and we bumped into each other at the bar overlooking the harbor. As soon as we started talking, we couldn’t stop. We chatted about anything and everything, and as our friends like to joke, we still haven’t stopped. They tease us for constantly having little “side convos” – I guess we just love to know what the other is thinking – all the time :)

When we parted ways, I showed my true colors by rather aggressively making sure he had my phone number (I demanded to see his phone to check). I like to be thorough! Unfazed, George called me the next day. Our first official date was in Newburyport, MA, and we ended up spending the entire weekend together (where he oh-so-casually met my parents), and we’ve been inseparable ever since. Love!

Rustic Autumn Wedding At The Willowdale Estate

Any wedding at the Willowdale Estate is going to be full of rustic, New England beauty. But Becky and Sam’s wedding fulfilled every expectation tenfold.  It’s also pretty fail-safe when your other vendors are people like florist Michele Bernard and the Wedding Paper Divas. The couple from A Guy + A Girl Photography also worked their magic, so make sure to take in all of  the autumnal loveliness here.

From A Guy and a Girl PhotographyFor a chilly October day, it was as cozy as could be within the Willowdale Estate. Becky + Sam’s wedding was a very special celebration, not only for the happy couple but for both of their families as well; many of them traveling from not only New England but as far away as Russia. Becky + Sam braved the chilly air to walk around the estate for a few pictures. They snuggled in the forest, surrounded by extra tall pines and smooched under umbrellas in the field. Their reception was one of the wildest dance parties of 2013.
