Ocean Air Bliss and Coastal Design at Watchmere in Martha’s Vineyard

[section title=”The Planning”]
[field title=”The Inspiration”]Martha’s Vineyard in the summer is nothing short of a dream. The weather is phenomenal, the crowds are lively, and there is just an essence of enjoyment in the ocean air. The only thing more magical than spending a day on Martha’s Vineyard is spending a day attending a wedding on Martha’s Vineyard. The couple wanted to share the love of the area with the guest through the design. This was truly the inspiration behind the whole event.

[field title=”Wedding Colors”]Their colors were shades of blue and green which gave resemblance to the natural landscape.[/field]
[field title=”The Venue”]Jill & Marek, our bride and groom, hosted their guests on the Vineyard for a coastal, New England style affair. Watchmere has it all. The guest favorites were the comfortable coastal guest poolside seating and iconic canvas tent with waving flags.[/field]

Coastal Neutrals and Understated Elegance in Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard

[section title=”The Planning”]
[field title=”The Inspiration”]

The coastal dream of Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard was itself the inspiration for the design. The traditional New England coastal manor was the perfect setting for an elevated soiree, brought to life by Britt Jones Co. Completed by a soft blue palette and delicate florals, this wedding was an homage to the understated elegance of Martha’s Vineyard itself.

[/field]
[field title=”Wedding Colors”]

The soft blues, whites, and delicate greens encapsulated coastal neutrals perfectly. From the florals to the linens to the settings, the effortless design pulled in the colors of Edgartown.

[/field]
[field title=”The Venue”]Watchmere in Edgartown was the dream location for this wedding. The coastal manor covered in cedar shingles in the traditional Vineyard architectural style boasts a private estate for a luxury event. Complete with a shimmering pool and plenty of space for a tented reception, Watchmere has all of the coastal charm and minimal elegance required for a Vineyard wedding. [/field]

[field title=”Wedding Gown”]Our bride began the day in her first gown, a cream Wilden London scalloped edge dream with delicate bow and ruffled details. The unique design of the gown showed off her Chanel shoes while still having all of the elegance of a full ball gown. She then changed into her reception look, a Sébastien Luke lace gown with a long flowing bow and ruffles. Both gowns captured the day’s commitment to old world glamor and coastal elegance, with exquisite details and unique designs.[/field]

[field title=”Florals & Decor”]Inspired by the florals that bloom in Edgartown in the spring, the hydrangea-forward arrangements filled wicker baskets and bud vases to create a chic minimalistic design. The soft blues, greens, and whites of a New England summer carried through all of the stationery pieces, the place settings, and the decor. The sailboat escort table was a show-stopper, hand painted by Courtney Kibby Designs. Every intentional design element felt cozy and coastal, including the “Coastal Grandmother” signature cocktail and hand painted lamps on the bar. [/field]
[field title=”Favorite Design Element”]My favorite design elements were the tiny, thoughtful, and personal details. The “Coastal Grandmother” signature cocktail was served with fresh sprigs of lavender, which grow naturally on Watchmere’s property. Martha’s Vineyard is a haven for sailing, and the sailboat escort display was breathtaking and intentional. Even the cheeky cocktail napkins that reflected the spirit of the signature cocktail were perfection. The day was filled with small details that brought together the elegant celebration. [/field]
[field title=”Tips To Pull Off The Look”]This coastal elegant wedding can be achieved through a soft color palette, stunning florals throughout, and a commitment to small, personal details. Chic stationery that is perfectly on-theme ties together the elegant design, and understated luxury, which is the definition of Martha’s Vineyard, is essential to this design aesthetic. [/field]

This Upscale Backyard Wedding Screams ‘Coastal Grandma’ Style

[field title=”Design / Vibe / Vision”]This wedding on Martha’s Vineyard set itself apart with the bride’s clear vision for an upscale “coastal grandma vibe.” Maeve and Connor chose to host their wedding at Maeve’s parent’s summer home on the island. This allowed them the flexibility to transform the space into a wedding venue for the evening while still being able to feel at ease and snap photos in the family garden.[/field]
[field title=”Proposal Story”]Three weeks after Maeve moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, she ran into Connor at a local brewery. Soon after that day, they went on their first date, where they rode scooters around the city and enjoyed the local fare. Connor proposed about a year and a half later. That day Maeve had made brunch plans with some of Connor’s family. Connor got ready for his usual Saturday mornings at work, sending Maeve and her company off to brunch without him. That morning the city was also covered in a surprise snowstorm, the biggest it had seen in years. Maeve didn’t think Connor would be in attendance, but when she arrived, the restaurant was closed due to the weather. Connor came out from behind the corner and surprised her with a proposal alongside all her guests.[/field]

West Coast Cool Meets Martha’s Vineyard Charm at This Edgartown Wedding

Personalization was the key to this Martha’s Vineyard dream of a day! Sandy and Robert filled their wedding with nods to where they’re from, things they enjoy, and even the hotel that started it all. Timeless Event Planning effortlessly planned and designed the details (check out the rattan lighting at the reception!) and Morrice Florist put together soft-hued florals that added to the romance. When we say we’re swooning, we mean it. The full gallery captured by Elizabeth LaDuca is just waiting for you to dive in!

In 2014, Sandy and Robert both quit their corporate jobs and moved to the little island of Martha’s Vineyard. Both were looking for summer fun and landed jobs at the Harbor View Hotel, Sandy as a wedding planner and Robert as a pool boy. They met the first week of work in front of the copy machine that Sandy had jammed, and she was instantly smitten.

After four years of dating, Robert brought Sandy back to the Vineyard to the same hotel and the same copy machine, surprising her by popping the question at where they first met.

For their wedding, personalization was key, with everything needing to have a purpose and make sense as to why they would include it in their big day. Since they both lived in San Diego, the goal was to bring a touch of West Coast vibes to the traditionally East Coast island and the hotel that started it all.

The color palette was vibrant like the sunsets they enjoyed together, and all of the food was inspired by their favorite date nights. Their signature drinks were even called the Pool Boy and the Wedding Planner as a nod to how they first met.

Since they had to cut the guest list short due to COVID, creating a personalized experience for their guests was important for the couple. Sandy handmade ceramic vases that doubled as escort cards for each guest. Once guests found their seats, each place setting featured a personalized letter sharing a favorite memory about them.

Classic Summer Wedding on Martha’s Vineyard

Planning a wedding on Martha’s Vineyard is no easy fete. Speaking from experience during my own venue search—things book up quickly! That is, unless you’re parents have a home on the island like this stunning Bride, done up by Stacie Ford Weddings. Their classic church ceremony followed by a tented reception is pulling at my seaside-loving heartstrings. Craving a coastal affair packed with elegance? Spend some time with this fete planned by Lyndsey Hamilton Events and captured by K Robinson Photography.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/215126064 600 338]

From the Bride… Matt and I grew up in the same small town just north of the Manhattan. We unofficially met when we worked down the street from each other, he at his family’s pizzeria, me at the town bakery. He’d come in on Saturday for glazed donuts. We officially met in high school when he starting hanging around with my group of friends- and we became lab partners in physics and we’ve been partners ever since.

It took 10 years for matt to propose and a second for me to say yes! In July of 2015 we got engaged on Edgartown harbor in Martha’s Vineyard and decided there was no better place for us to say I do! We were married in St Elizabeth’s in downtown Edgartown by Matt’s cousin Michael White, who also married Matt’s parents 31 years earlier.

The reception was held at my parents property on the Edgartown great pond. Lyndsey Hamilton Events planned and designed a fairytale wedding. We started with cocktails, passed hors dourves, and a raw bar, in my backyard over looking the Edgartown great pond. During cocktail hour and dinner we enjoyed the beautiful musical styles of the lovely Parkington sisters- including an hour of old Irish songs as a nod to our heritage.

Matt, a chef in downtown manhattan, worked with Jaime Hamlin catering to curate a delicious menu; to start a plate of local cheeses and honey, then the main event of a whole roast pig, roast chickens, and grilled sword fish- complemented with a side of fresh succotash, and the biggest culinary hit of the whole night; cornbread. We made our way from the Sperry dinner tent to the clear top tent with a clear dance floor covering the pool. We used big sky tents for all our rentals. After all the important dances and the iconic moment, of my best friend jumping on stage to sing with the wedding band Sultans of Swing with Jerry Bennett, we cut our delicious carrot wedding cake made by Cakes by Val. The cops shut us down at 1045pm but that didn’t stop us from we heading over to the barn for my favorite part of the whole evening; the late night food truck from The Artcliff diner. We danced all night under the stars and ended the day sitting cuddled by the fire pit.

Blogger Bride Jessye of City Tonic’s Colorful DIY Wedding

We’ve had a front-row seat to our blogger bride Jessye’s wedding planning journey, and today is finally the big reveal. She’s sharing an inside look into her Martha’s Vineyard nuptials photographed by Ruth Eileen, and it’s the ultimate East Coast celebration with pops of color woven throughout. Jessye, it’s been a joy having you guest blog on our pages and your special day, simply put, is everything. Excuse us as we go spend the rest of the day pinning in The Vault.

From The Bride… I’m so excited to share my wedding with you today! When I think back on the crazy blur of our wedding, a few moments really stand out to me. On the morning of, I woke up to a crisp and cloudless blue sky and an adorable text message from Kevin – both of which put me at ease. After that brief moment of calm, all I can remember is the frenetic energy around me as I finished some last-minute DIY details with my bridesmaids (thanks guys!) and wrote notes to Kevin and our parents. Suddenly, the frenzy of the day came to a halt and I found myself looking at my dad as we were about to walk down the aisle, violin music floating in the background. I remember locking eyes with Kevin and watching a smile flash across his face as I approached. Somehow — even after anxiously waiting and planning and daydreaming about it for months — nothing really prepares you for how exceptional that moment feels.

When we first started discussing the big day, we agreed that we really just wanted everyone to have fun. We also hoped that our guests would be able to see all of the personality and love that went into the planning. My mom and I (and Kevin, at times) planned the entire wedding ourselves and the experience made me realize how lucky I am to have a creative and innovative mom and a supportive husband. Since the wedding involved plenty of sourcing and DIY elements, I thought it would be fun to break it down into pieces — in case anyone else is as obsessed with the details as I am! (And I owe a huge thank you to the immeasurably talented Ruth Eileen Photography for capturing all of those details and moments so beautifully.)

The venue

My family has a home on Martha’s Vineyard and the island has always been a huge part of my life — I spent a few glorious summers there waitressing and babysitting, and it’s probably my favorite place on earth. When I met Kevin (a native Californian), I made sure we visited MV early on in our relationship — luckily, he fell in love with it too! We chose to get married at a private estate in Edgartown where we could hold both the ceremony and tented reception — it was situated right on the water and surrounded by beautiful sea grass and Montauk daisies. As an added bonus, it was large enough to house the whole bridal party so everyone was able to stay in one place (and enjoy plenty of leftover fried chicken the morning after the wedding!).

The fashion

As a fashion blogger and overall style enthusiast, I was particularly excited about dress shopping. I eagerly scheduled appointments at multiple boutiques in Boston, and was pretty certain I knew what I wanted. My first appointment was at L’elite Bridal during a Reem Acra trunk show (one of my favorite designers). I’m generally a very indecisive person and I like to know all of my options before committing to one — so it was pretty surprising when I fell for the second dress I tried on (miraculously, I never second-guessed my choice either). The intricately embroidered bodice was peppered with just the right amount of sequins (although it’s hard to see in the photos!) and I loved the fluid movement of the skirt. I had small silk buttons added to the back as an homage to my mother’s wedding dress and a sequined belt for a little extra sparkle and texture. My favorite addition; however, was the beautiful diamond starburst brooch that was used to fasten the belt – it’s a family heirloom that’s been worn by every bride on my mother’s side since the early 1800s, and I felt very lucky to continue the tradition.

The DIY

After learning calligraphy and designing our save-the-dates and invitations, I knew I also wanted to design all of the other stationery components (like table numbers, menus, directional signs, etc.) to keep everything visually consistent. Our wedding invitations were foil stamped in copper and rose gold, so I decided to incorporate these metallics throughout the wedding. However, professional foil stamping can be really cost-prohibitive when you’re printing menus, ceremony programs, table numbers and advice cards. It simply wasn’t in our budget, so I found a way to print DIY foil at home using foil transfer paper and a laminator. It was extremely time-consuming (I ended up printing a few hundred pieces, which I would not recommend!) — however, I’m one of those weirdos who thoroughly enjoys big craft projects so it all worked out.

In order to achieve the same rose gold theme in my wedding signs, I enlisted the help of my cousin who owns a custom print wear shop. I scanned my own brush script and designed the layouts — and from there, he came up with a way to print these beautiful banner signs in shiny foil. My mom and I constructed frames for the banners using copper pipes and fittings from the hardware store (I thought this added a bit of an unexpected edge to the look). We also made stands for the table numbers using thin copper pipes. For the escort card display, we wrapped an old door in that ubiquitous banana leaf print fabric — the same print I used for envelope liners in our invitations (it was like a little wink to… myself). I ordered a giant box of copper plant markers and wrote all of our guests’ names on the individual tags. My darling bridesmaids helped organize all of the tags by table number and attached them to the display.

The menu

Since we got married at a private venue, we had the freedom to customize everything. Instead of picking a few options from a fixed menu, we worked with an incredible local chef, Gina Stanley, to create our dream menu (think: sweet potato beignets, fresh island oysters, buttermilk fried chicken with Tabasco honey, braised short ribs and parmesan risotto). Kevin and I are huge foodies — and we especially looove comfort food, so we opted for a family style dinner made from all local ingredients. That way, everyone could try everything and the informal family-style meal facilitated more introductions and conversation between guests. (P.S. I always hear that brides forget to eat on their wedding day, but I definitely did not have that problem.)

The party

After all of the anticipation, stress and excitement that comes with wedding planning, we were so ready to unwind and have fun at our reception. I was laughing and dancing nonstop – catching up with friends and family, smooching Kevin and repeating “I can’t believe we’re married!”, not caring about my windblown hair or grass-stained dress. It was the perfect celebration. After dinner and our first dance, Kevin and his groomsmen changed into these crazy printed short-shorts (Chubbies) with socks, and danced like maniacs. I wasn’t sure how the outfit change would be received by all of our guests, but it was a hit and it totally kept the party going! After that, we had a sparkler and paper lantern release that, unfortunately, we had to cut it short due to a fire hazard with the surrounding sea grass. For all you brides-to-be: this is a perfect example of those inevitable wedding day blunders you’ll have to force yourself not to stress over! Luckily, no damage resulted and the ordeal was quickly forgotten as soon as the late-night donuts and apple fritters arrived!

Martha’s Vineyard Summer Engagement Session

While we may be enjoying the glories of fall at the moment, winter isn’t far off and jumping into feet of snow is just not as fun as jumping into a pile of leaves. So in this state of denial that I’m fully embracing, I’m quite happy to go back to the sweetness of summer with this seaside e-shoot from Jocelyn Filley and soak up every last second of sunshine and saltwater kisses in our VAULT right this way!

From the Bride-to-be… Claire and Alex met on an otolaryngology (ENT) residency interview at Tulane University School of Medicine during their fourth year of medical school. Claire was a student at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA, and Alex was a student at UCONN School of Medicine in Farmington, CT. They had a lot in common, including UCONN – Alex had rotated on Claire’s father’s psychiatry service (Claire’s dad is a psychiatrist at UCONN) as a medical student! Days after the interview, Alex got Claire’s phone number from a mutual friend and sent her a text.

Not only were Claire and Alex smitten, but Tulane was too! They both matched at Tulane for their residency. Alex was thrilled when he found out Claire had also matched at Tulane, texting a friend, “Stop it! I love her!” when he discovered they matched together. They were a support system for each other by phone, email, and text over the coming weeks as they each prepared for a big move to New Orleans.

Sparks flew instantly once the two arrived to New Orleans. They shared their first kiss seven days after residency started and have been inseparable ever since.

While Claire and Alex were on vacation at Lucy Vincent Beach in Chilmark, MA during the spring of their intern year, surrounded by views of the Atlantic and the Allen Farm, Alex told Claire he knew where and how he was going to propose to her.

Two years and much teasing from their residency attendings later, while on a Vineyard vacation with friends Thérèse and Grayson Gremillion, Alex planned to propose. He wanted to surprise Claire and so he picked the only rainy day of the trip, when she would least suspect it. Claire, Alex, Thérèse, and Grayson went on a drive to the Menemsha fishing village. On the way, Alex suggested going for a walk on Lucy Vincent Beach – to which Claire responded, “No! It’s raining!” He had originally planned on proposing at the beach that inspired him two years before. But Claire drove them up to the Gay Head Lighthouse and cliffs. Though Alex had never been there before, as soon as he saw the beautiful brick red lighthouse and clay cliffs, he knew this was the perfect place. With Thérèse and Grayson snapping pictures, Alex told Claire he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. After he asked her to marry him, Claire was so excited that she jumped up to hug him. Alex had to ask if that meant yes! Which it did, of course.

Alex and Claire will be getting married 6/11/16 at the Allen Farm in Chilmark, MA on Martha’s Vineyard – right by Lucy Vincent Beach. After they selected their wedding photographer, Jocelyn Filley, they took more traditional engagement pictures in Edgartown, MA on Martha’s Vineyard. Claire wanted just a few shots where she wasn’t crying or looking completely shocked!

From The Bride…We met on Match.com in December 2009. Yes, one in five couples!

Since Mike had attended College of Charleston for undergrad, he had always wanted to take me there. We planned a trip in April 2013. Upon arrival at the cute bed and breakfast, Mike had ordered champagne to the room and a gorgeous bouquet of flowers. We had a day to ourselves and went sightseeing around the city. On the second day, we went to the beach near where he lived during college. After laying out on a blanket for a bit, Mike proposed! Short and sweet…he opened the ring box, told me he loved me, and asked if I would marry him. I said yes! We cuddled for a bit and took a couple pictures to commemorate the moment.

After that, we went for a burger (our favorite food) at a great local place. Then returned to the hotel, where I was instructed to dress up. After changing, we walked downstairs to find a horse and carriage. We took a ride around old Charleston. Very romantic! We ended the ride at a fancy hotel, where Mike said we were going to get a drink on their rooftop. I had always said that I wanted my friends to be around to celebrate my engagement, as my Mom had passed away in 2004 and I felt it would be comforting. Upon getting to the rooftop, I was surprised by my now Maid of Honor (Laura) and Bridesmaid (Caroline), as well as their boyfriend/husbands. It was such a perfect moment and really completed the day! We spent the rest of the weekend celebrating with our friends, enjoying the beautifully classic Charleston, and getting so excited about the future.

We actually don’t have any roots in Martha’s Vineyard. Maybe it’s our planning sides, but we loved the idea of taking on an unknown place and making new memories. Overall, we really just want our close friends and family to have fun and be in love at our wedding. It is a destination party weekend.

One of our unexpected and favorite parts of the day was the wind during the ceremony and pictures. Out on the lighthouse/beach, it’s very windy and most people complain about that. We think it added a natural, unexpected energy. It blew my veil and toned down the formality that weddings can have. Best part of it all – We can always go back to the spot we got married and remember the day.
