Whimsical Maryland Wedding at Woodend Sanctuary

If the boutonniere bar is any indication of just how fun and whimsical this wedding is then we are in for quite the treat. From the gobs of cool stationery by Little Bit Heart  right through to the endless parade of pretty details by Karson Butler Events or Holly Heider Chapple’s happy florals, this is whimsy done in such an elegant way. But we’ll let Jodi Miller’s images speak for themselves. See them all right here.

From the Bride… Aaron and I met in Chinatown in Washington, DC. I went with a group of friends to see Mamma Mia and my friends insisted to go dancing afterward. Aaron was out with a friend who was PCSing to another military post. He spotted me not dancing and struck up a conversation. Our first date was dinner and a movie in Chinatown, but we took too long talking over dinner and missed the movie! We eventually saw it on our second date :)

Aaron proposed over the phone! He was stationed in San Antonio and I was in Washington (our third year of being apart). He got down on one knee when he was in town the next month (after we chose a ring together).

We designed a wedding with Karson Butler Events that was casual, creative and a fun party for all of our friends and family to enjoy. I love crafting, stationery, lettering, calligraphy and all of those lovely things!

From Karson Butler Events… Danielle also wanted a touch of DIY which we loved! She had participated in a calligraphy class and hand lettered all the playful save the dates herself. When it came time to select her wedding calligrapher, we knew her instructor Michele at Meant To Be Calligraphy was the perfect choice for her invites and day-of paper goods! (Talk about full circle! Of course, Michele was honored!

Some of our favorite design elements from their wedding included:

*A Boutonniere Bar escort card display for all the guests – Guests loved wearing their special boutonnieres and the tags let guests know what table they were seated at! We loved dreaming this idea up and all our creative partners were such troopers in helping us bring this to life!

*Gorgeous blooms – Holly Heider Chapple’s flowers speak for themselves – drop dead gorgeous!! And when a rain storm brought the ceremony inside at the last minute (despite forecasts showing 0% chance), Holly’s team were all-stars at repurposing the flowers to decorate the mantle before guests arrived! Proof that even a plan B can be gorgeous!

*Creative paper goods – Our bride LOVED paper & calligraphy, so we partnered with Little Bit Heart on a custom invitation suite that mixed Danielle’s favorite design elements. The save-the-dates even had a scratch off to show where the wedding location would be – so fun! The welcome baskets perfectly complimented the colorful paper goods too.

DIY Living Plant Centerpieces

Hello brides, Caitlin from Glitter Guide here! A few weeks ago I shared a fun floral lesson from my wedding florist, but what I didn’t tell you was I’m doing some of the flowers for our rehearsal dinner and wedding myself ! Not only is this a super affordable option for the bride on a budget – but they’d also make great favors, escort card…the options are endless. Living plant centerpieces are a cinch to put together, and today I’m sharing my top 6 tips.

1. Pick an assortment of plants that cover the three t’s: texture, tall, trailing so you can create an arrangement that will transfer to a pot and look great.

2. Fill your vessel with potting soil.

3. Wiggle the plants out of the container by pinching the bottom and squeezing.

4. Loosen the roots gently — its ok to remove some if you need room in your vessel.

5. Arrange them and add extra soil so they are firm and in place.

6. Water 3-4 times a week and replant in a planter with drainage after 3-5 days.

From Caitlin Moran… The concept for this inspirational shoot stemmed from featuring two of our favorite things — donuts and peonies, which also happen to be two popular trends in weddings right now! Sarah of Pops of Plum kept the floral arrangements super simple — after all peonies really speak for themselves, right?

I developed the tablescape by starting with two components – pale ice blue napkins and natural green leaves. White and gold were the obvious choice for accent colors and the chairs from XOXO Vintage Rentals with their pale blue velvet cushions just set the scene perfectly.

I love incorporating touches of natural, organic beauty into more formal tablesettings — so the small garlands on the bride and groom sign and sprigs in the napkins kept the table from feeling too stuffy.

I actually made the donut cake myself — which is an easy idea for a bridal shower or bachelorette party brunch! A few fresh flowers and greens on the side and a pretty cake stand are all you need!

Classic Wedding at The Tidewater Inn

One thing I completely understand: falling in love with a wedding venue years before you are even engaged.  Especially if it’s a breathtaking locale like the Tidewater Inn, a place just made for saying “I do” and dancing the night away.  Add in a fab team of vendors like Melanie BennettSeasonal Flowers and Carly Fuller Photography and you have yourself one seriously awesome wedding.  See it all here.

From Melanie Bennett… Brooke Anne and Corey were married this past September 7th, 2013 at Holy Trinity in Oxford, Maryland, and then celebrated with their reception and dinner in the Crystal Room at the Tidewater Inn in Easton, MD. In the hours between the ceremony and the reception, the newly married couple headed over to the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry to take some photographs on the docks with the talented Carly Fuller. The resulting photos were breathtaking! After taking some shots at the water’s edge, they returned to the town of Easton and found several little hidden courtyards to finish the bride and groom photos.

The Tidewater Inn had long been the bride’s choice to hold her wedding well before she was ever engaged. Her grandfather had once been the Controller at the hotel and her mother had grown up coming into work with him and playing in the back offices at the historic hotel. Brooke Anne had also attended her cousin’s wedding as a young girl and had photos of herself dancing with her dad in the Gold Ballroom. That wedding left a big impact on the little girl who decided that she wanted to hold her own wedding at the hotel when she grew up!

Oh-So-Classic Nautical Wedding

Classic is just the tip of the iceberg with this beauty sent to us by Erich McVey. It’s really so much more than the perfect white tent, the nautical touches crafted by Strawberry Milk Events, and the stunning tables lined in lace and florals by The Flower Studio. So much more. It’s a love fest and proof that the team of vendors behind this affair know full well how to craft a wildly beautiful event.

From Julie of Strawberry Milk Events… We wanted Liz and Mike’s waterfront wedding for 150 guests in the quaint town of St. Michael’s MD to appear effortlessly elegant. The lovely Inn at Perry Cabin hosted their family and friends over the weekend, where they also got ready the morning of the wedding. They were married in a little stone church straight out of a storybook, followed by a cocktail reception under the lighthouse at Chesapeake Maritime Museum. Cocktail hour highlights included an oyster bar, cheese and charcuterie displays, and a refreshing Cucumber Mint Gin Fizz signature cocktail. An upscale, farm to table, southern supper with a slight 1940’s vibe ensued under a beautiful Sperry tent on the point after cocktails.

At the wedding reception, we mixed organic linens and natural textures with mirrored surfaces and gold accents to achieve a layered look that blended the best of organic and traditional. Gold chiavarri chairs donned sheer lace chair covers at Restoration Hardware wooden tables, tied together with a hemstitch white linen runner. At other tables, wooden farm chairs accented organic white textured linens, all with glamorous accents of gold and the softest blush.

The centerpieces were romantic and lush, but with an organic “just picked from the garden” feel. The couple’s bespoke gold monogram was incorporated into every detail – from the invitations, to the programs, menus, escort cards, coasters, napkins, beverage sticks and even the dance floor. The napkins at place settings were tied off with nautical rope, and placecards were attached to mini pearl nautilus shells as a nod to the surroundings. On the dinner menu: red and yellow watermelon, feta and mint salad followed by a choice between steak frites and local rockfish. The vintage-style big band set the perfect mood – which the couple danced to under the sparkling 6 foot empire crystal chandelier, which had gold leaf detailing mimicking the custom dance floor monogram.

The couple made sure to incorporate the groom’s two daughters with special additions to the ceremony program and a special family dance at the reception. Since sparklers were not allowed on property, at the end of the night, guests waved ribbon wands while the couple made their grand exit into their vintage, wooden getaway boat.

Butchery 101 + Elegant Dinner Party

My family and I take food very seriously. It’s the main component of each of our gatherings, it’s our mission to unveil the best of the best when travelling, and we do our best to stay on the forefront of any food related event. So it’s no shock that butchery lessons, paired with a fabulous feast, from Make Tribe is totally and completely up my alley. With photos from Lindsay Hite, there’s more right here!

Knife to Table marked MAKE TRIBE’s first Skill Supper — the inaugural event in a new dinner series based on hands-on learning. Butchery brought our guests around the table and into George Marsh’s kitchen at the soon-to-be-opened Parts & Labor in Remington.

Guests were greeted with a “Field Trip” cocktail created by Stephanie Griber of Shoo-Fly Diner, a refreshing and zingy concoction of Millstone Cellars’ Gingerroot cider, organic vodka and blueberry preserves. After some mingling and introductions, attendees were ushered into the kitchen as George began his butchery demo. Guests gathered around the large butcher-block table as half a hog was brought out for examination.

George explained the technique of seam butchery and taught guests the ins and outs of carving, breaking down the hog while he spoke. After a 45-minute lesson, guests moved around the bar for Stephanie’s cocktail demonstration before taking their seats at the 50-foot table.

Petal and Print designed the greenery-filled garland that swept above the table top, and Esther & Harper made our tablescape visions come true by providing the vintage butcher scales and assorted iron weights. An array of white pillars, tapers and tealights, in addition to Petal and Print’s spring-centric floral arrangements, made for a lush, romantic setting.

MAKE TRIBE produced, printed and hand-sewed booklets outlining the butchery process and featuring an exclusive interview with George. Along with a screen-printed menu at each place, each guest also received a personal jar of Pork Rib Rub spices in a Weck jar to take home, and a conversation starter card was sneakily tucked under each place setting. Guests enjoyed a three-course meal complete with beer pairings for each plate.

butchery

In seam butchery, the butcher follows the seams of the muscles and bones of the animal for a more natural, organic cut. Below, a few pro tips on breaking down a hog from George Marsh himself, head butcher at Parts & Labor in Baltimore.

1. Use a boning knife with a curved blade, and handle it like you would a sculpting tool. The curved blade allows for more control while cutting.

2. Focus on using just the tip of the knife. The less blade you use, the smaller the mistakes you’ll make. And, not to mention, the slower you’ll dull your blade.

3. Use a butchery saw as little as possible—only when you really need it, as in when cutting the belly from the loins.

4. Don’t make the mistake of throwing away good stuff. You can use the skin to make pork rinds, grind up the skin, meat and fat to make an emulsified sausage and even use the heads for head cheese or scrapple.

5. It’s key to have a working knowledge of the cuts you can glean from a hog, which has three primal cuts: Shoulder Primal, Belly & Loin Primal and the Leg Primal. The cuts of meat derived from the shoulder primal: shoulder, lardo, copa, bottom blade, butcher’s cut, hock and trotter. The cuts of meat derived from the belly primal: boneless pork chops, pork loin, belly & ribs. The cuts of meat derived from the leg primal: various hams.

Waterfront Maryland Wedding at The Inn At Perry Cabin

Waterfront Maryland weddings are basically unbeatable. They somehow mix chic and casual unlike anywhere else. This beauty is the perfect example, it’s downright stunning but yet you know the guests had a ridiculously amazing time. And with the oh so talented Jacqueline of Birds Of A Feather behind the lens to capture every moment, we’ve basically hit the jackpot of pretty. See more here.

From the Bride…We really visited the venue at the recommendation of my father. He had stayed there at least once on a business trip and told us we should check it out. Given my mothers desire to dress me in anything Laura Ashley throughout my childhood until I was old enough to protest and Walter’s childhood spend sailing on ships with his father not to mention our shared love for the water and anything nautical, it was really the perfect fit! We fell in love when we went to visit (which was in December shortly after we got engaged). We were just blown away when we saw how amazing everything looked with leaves on the trees and the sun shining! It was really sort of a whirlwind! We met in April of 2012 (on Match.com no less! ew! you can probably leave that less than romantic part out), were engaged by the end of November of the same year and then married in October of the following year. So really we met, got engaged, planned a wedding, and got married in less than a year and a half. And amazingly we still not only love each other, but like each other too!! Invitations were all handmade by me. Walter did the typeset and printing and I put them together. Place cards were typed on Walter’s antique typewriter. The note attached to the guest gift was a donation we made to a charity that is close to Walter’s heart called the Invisible Children. Amazing moments throughout the evening…sort of a blur really. My father’s speech sort of sticks with me. He is the only man I know with the ability to make a smart ass remark in one breath and bring a crowd to tears in the next. The song he picked out for our first dance says it all. Gracie by Ben Folds “You can’t fool me I saw you when you came out, You have your mama’s taste but you’ve got my mouth…

Elegant Winter Wedding at Antrim 1844 Country House Hotel

I know we’re just getting out of the crazy cold winter we had this year, but forgive me as I bring us back for a moment (I promise, once you see the gallery you won’t mind). A wedding this elegant could only happen in the winter with a beautiful snowfall, and could only be captured by the lovely Lindsay of Readyluck. Aime Decker Beauty dolled up our stunning bride, and the day that followed was one for goosebumps and happy tears!

From the stunning bride… Maryland has been home to me my whole life, and I couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else. Antrim fit the mold for our 20’s inspired winter wedding perfectly! With it’s historic charm, and unique details, I knew it would be the perfect backdrop to our special day.

We specifically looked for a quaint and historic chapel to complete the intimate feel of our wedding day. The chapel barely fit 100 guests. I loved how everyone was so close together, and so close to us. It felt intimate and special.

We knew we wanted to have a winter wedding, but wanted to infuse an additional theme that showed our personalities and love for nostalgia. I was picturing a snowy evening on the Atlantic City Boardwalk in the 1920’s.

We infused details that evoked this feeling from the accordion player at our cocktail hour, to the prohibition era signature drinks, to the vintage reproduction photobooth, and the cigar bar for after dinner. The pre civil war parlor environment was absolutely perfect for what we were going for. The fireplaces were blazing, and there were tons of candles to create a cozy atmosphere against the snowy backdrop. I focused heavily on the typography of all of the paper goods. I designed and made all of the invitations, programs, menus, really anything that was paper. I also made the cake stands, cake topper, photobooth props, and favors.

I think our favorite detail about the wedding was the accordion player at our cocktail hour. Although we only got to interact with her for a few minutes, the warm italian classics she was playing amongst the roaring fire with snow falling outside was magical.

Our other favorite moment of the wedding was our first dance (typical, I know!). We danced to “La Vie En Rose” by Louis Armstrong. We practiced really hard on our twirl and dip finale, which got a round of applause and a few whistles from our guests! I’m just glad he didn’t drop me!

We love the fact that we got married on groundhog’s day. We joked about how awesome it would be if we could wake up the day after the wedding, and it was our wedding day again! I had to sneak one groundhog somewhere in the reception, so I made a groundhog cake topper out of a figurine that I purchased from Etsy.

Every little project that you do for your wedding, you will notice and appreciate so much on your wedding day. Although I spent many long nights slaving away on everything from my wedding invitations to my cake topper, I asked my self the question “will I even notice this?.” We noticed everything, and felt 100% happy with the end result.

An MTV Catfish Show Engagement Session

MTV’s Catfish is one of my not so secret indulgences. And to be honest, the endings are sometimes less than stellar. But for Lauren and Derek, this internet relationship ended in a proposal. In fact, it’s a happily ever after eight years in the making. Have a look at the full gallery of images captured by Daysy Photography right here and for more on this love story, read up at People.com.

From the Photographer… Lauren and Derek shot their engagement session in Frederick, MD. Little Mason, now 3 years old, was part of it and behaved like a little gentleman. They are currently living in Frederick, but things may be changing soon. The couple is planning on moving back to Texas to be close to Lauren’s parents and warm weather.

Tented Backyard Waterside Wedding

If you’re in the mood for a good garden party, we’ve got just the fix a la Jacqueline Campbell of Birds of a Feather and Arney Walker of Pineapple Productions. The colors of the sunset over the lake grace this beautiful day, which is the perfect reason to hide in your office with this gallery for an hour or two. It’s so pretty, I could cry!

Romantic

From Pineapple Productions… Christina and Grayson got married on a perfect fall day at her father’s home in Easton right on the water. Christina wanted guests to be able to enjoy as much of the water view as possible. The overall color palette were soft pinks, purples and blues to go with the colors of the sunset over the water. As guests arrived, they walked up the tree lined drive and were greeted with lemonade prior to the ceremony. Their ceremony was under a tree that overlooked the dock. After the ceremony, while Christina and Grayson took photos, guests enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails poolside. Right as the sun was setting, guests then transitioned from one side of the property to the other. Again, Christina wanted them to have the full Eastern Shore experience and so guests walked along a candle lit path by the water and sea grass to the tented part of the property. As another nod to the water, Christina had a Sperry tent with warm bistro lighting throughout. Guests had crab cakes for dinner, a true Eastern Shore tradition. Dexter Lake Club Band was one of Christina’s splurges and they kept the party rocking until the wee hours of the morning. For a little fun, the bride’s father had a DIY fireworks display during dinner, which kept everyone on their toes.

Chesapeake Bay Beach Club Wedding

These two have the cutest story.  Seriously… this is one of those romances that deserves a big screen rendition starring Reese Witherspoon and (insert dapper actor here).  It’s that good, people.  And their seaside wedding?  Well, that would be the uber-romantic ending, with gorgeous florals from Amy Wilkins, the planning skills of Kari Rider and magical moments courtesy of Katie Pegher.  See them here.

And a sweet film from Blue Sky Films… Yes. Please.

From the Bride… I remember the very first time I saw Paul in the 8th grade. At this point, you’re probably thinking “they are a fairy tale love story,” and that is actually quite far from the truth. Although there is a bit of magic to it, I like to think of our relationship as fun, spontaneous, relaxed and full of goofy moments. You see – although Paul and I met 13 years ago, we were best friends for many years before dating.

It all started when my older sister started swooning over Paul’s best friend. I ended up being my sister’s “wingwoman” and Paul was his best friend’s “wingman.” Eventually, my sister and her now husband (with two adorable daughters) didn’t need us to tag along on their dates – yet Paul and I remained inseparable. Our relationship blossomed over years of dating long distance. And – I mean, YEARS of long distance. I was working at a retail headquarters in Columbus, Ohio and Paul was living in the Washington, DC area. Needless to say, I stopped counting after our 50th trip back and forth to see each other.

Eventually I got ahold of my senses and moved to Arlington to be with the love of my life. Our hearts (and wallets!) couldn’t have been happier. That was, until August of 2012 when Paul surprised me with a proposal at Nemacolin’s uber-romantic Falling Rock followed by a surprise party with our families.

I always knew that I wanted to be engaged for over a year. I wanted to enjoy that gleeful stage of my life, taking my time to plan the details and just relish the moment. Little did I know how much work that planning would be. Paul and I went through an enormous amount of ups and downs throughout our engagement, and I have to thank my saving graces including my family, friends, Katie Pegher and Kari Rider. If you aren’t already Googling their names, then consider yourself crazy. Katie is the most talented photographer I have ever met – she is a true artist, not to mention an absolute ball of fun. And Kari, she is the most laid back, relaxed person who helped me throughout the planning process and my (occasional) bridezilla meltdowns.

Paul and I decided to have our wedding at the breathtaking Chesapeake Bay Beach Club. We wanted our family and friends to come out to the Eastern Shore, which is a very popular getaway for those who live in the DC area. We had everyone stay in Annapolis, a quintessential sailing town with rich history and a stylish, yet relaxed tone. And, crossing over the Bay Bridge to our venue just brought shivers up and down my spine at the breathtaking view on the water.

Paul and I are interfaith: he is Jewish and I am Catholic, so we wanted our ceremony to be an intimate and meaningful representation of who we are. We were ecstatic to have two officiants, each representing our individual faiths: Rabbi Block and Father Michael Kelley. It is rare and hard to find a rabbi and a Catholic priest that will perform an interfaith ceremony, and so we felt very lucky to have worked with them both. They have performed countless weddings together and we’d highly recommend them.

Last-minute rain ended up forcing us to bring our ceremony inside, but it ended up being so cozy and allowed our guests to really feel as though they were an integral part of our union. Our ceremony focused on learning about the best of what we each have to offer, appreciating both differences and similarities and confirming that we were meant to be. It was the most exposed and exhilarating moment of my life: standing in front of our closest family and friends, and giving Paul my life to keep.

Paul and I chose to do a first look before the ceremony, and I must be honest in that it was so we could make sure we were there for all of cocktail hour. Whenever we go to weddings, our absolute favorite portion is always the cocktail hour. It’s a time for everyone to meet and mingle, relax and just enjoy the atmosphere. For this reason, we wanted our cocktail hour to be comfortable and laid back – above all else. We are from Ohio, and so we had the Ohio State Buckeyes game playing in our cocktail space. And, my golly was the cocktail space beautiful: floor to ceiling windows with a view of the Chesapeake Bay at sunset. Guests were able to listen to a 5-piece Celtic group who also played during ceremony, grab a cocktail or glass of champagne, and munch on a plethora of hor d’oeuvres including: a Maryland crab cake station, slider station with lobster, asian short rib, and kobe burgers, a cheese and vegetable display, mac-n-cheese filled bacon cups, wedged pear, brie and toasted almond phyllo rolls, and pigs in a blanket with Cleveland Stadium Mustard. It was even more extravagant than it sounds, with guests spilling out of the cocktail space and onto an outdoor patio to take pictures near the huge, lit brick fireplace or sandy dock next to the bay. Boy am I glad Paul and I didn’t miss out on the fun!

As guests began to enter the reception space, they grabbed their escort card. I used vintage compasses for the escort display and each guests name was on the inside lid of the compass. It served as a cute DIY favor and nautical touch.

For our wedding, we were fortunate to have Nathan Pacheco, an international recording artist, sing at our wedding. He sang our first dance, and his voice brought tears to my eyes and made my heart just swell with happiness. And throughout the night, our 13-piece band Free Spirit made for an incredible party. For a little dancing break, we decided to have a pie bar with doughnuts and ice cream instead of cake. Guests seemed to really enjoy that fall touch. To cap off the evening, Paul and I had a sparkler exit as we drove home in a 1962 Rolls Royce. Guests were able to get their late-night hunger fix with Chick-fil-a sandwiches, which were served on silver platters as guests got onto the shuttles for the ride home.

From the Bride… From the moment we got engaged, and truth be told even before, I was obsessed with wedding blogs (especially SMP) I would scour them and ooogle at the beautiful weddings. My pinterest boards were so full of wedding ideas that I had people asking me if I gotten had engaged. When it came time to finally plan my real wedding I was sure that it would be a breeze, no sweat!

Well, after looking at more than 30+ venues and not feeling like I had found the right one, my fiance and mother gently suggested that it was time to get some professional help. In the form of a wedding planner. Thankfully, I found Elle Ellinghaus, wedding planner extraordinaire! She saved me from my confusion and helped me make my wedding dreams and pinterest boards a reality! It was priceless to wake up and be totally stress free on our wedding day knowing that it was all in capable hands.

Pat and I knew from the beginning that we wanted a wedding that was as easy as possible for our guests. My family is from the Washington, DC area and Pat’s family is all in the New England area. Making the wedding accessible for those traveling was important to us. We finally settled on an amazing venue in Baltimore, The Evergreen Museum and Library. The large house, the beautiful garden and the cozy carriage house was everything I wanted in a venue. Growing up riding horses I loved that I got to have a little bit of horsie-ness in my wedding. The carriage house had the old beautiful stalls and our escort cards were tied to horse shoes that my mom and I had spray painted gold.

I also searched long and hard for the right photographer. Serena and Chad are so sweet, wonderful to work with, and as you can see, talented! I was so happy we decided to go with a first look before the ceremony. When I first I told my Mom that we were doing a first look, she was horrified and could not believe that we were going to see each other before the ceremony. It was with out a doubt one of the best decisions we made, just ask my mom, she is now the number one advocate for first looks! I love the photos that we got from it, and it was so special to have a moment just for the two of us. Seeing each other was such a relief and I was so excited to finally show him my dress! Being able to attend our cocktail hour was important to us, we wanted to squeeze out every possible ounce of time and fun with our guests!

We danced the night away at the reception to our amazing band Black Tie. There are no words to describe how amazing it is to have your closest family and friends all in the same place to celebrate your love! It made all the difficult decisions, planning and stressing before worth every second of it. We would do it all over again a million times.

Vintage Chic Wedding at Congressional Country Club

What can I say about this wedding, other than this: it is completely amazing.  The kind of amazing where every.last.moment is filled with heartwarming details, beautiful blooms from Elegance & Simplicity, Inc. and a First Look between father and daughter that is the best you’ll ever see.  It’s a day of non-stop emotion, and you can see it all captured by Tell Chronicles in the full gallery.

Vintage

From Elegance & Simplicity, Inc.… Lindsey + Sean’s wedding theme was “history in the making!”   Their inspiration comes from the word vintage, but in her opinion – vintage is only true vintage if it is from your own family.

The bride’s bridal bouquet had photos of her family hanging from the stems. There were special photos of her mother – who passed away when she was very young and yet she is super close to her stepmother which she actually calls her mom.

She was really close to all of her friends and has a really small family – hence the reason she asked her guests to “select a seat not a side.”

She also had a beautiful family memory table along with a guest book quilt to use forever to pass down to all generations.

From the Bride… We had a lot of family history signature pieces on our special day! From our mothers’ and grandmothers’ wedding dresses on display with their wedding day pictures, to the tribute to my late mother at the beginning of our ceremony, all the way to having my fathers old blue tee shirt cut into a heart and then stitched into my wedding dress over my heart.

One of my favorite DIY projects was the groomsmen boutonnieres. They were made from various turkey feathers and old buttons to symbolize the groom’s love and passion for hunting and fishing.

I also handmade each bridesmaids’ gold bracelet from old clip on earrings!

Another favorite was my wedding band which was made by combining diamonds from my birth mother, stepmother, Sean’s mother and Sean’s grandmother’s rings.

Everything was a tribute to our families which we love so very much. Even Sean’s father, Jerry, got ordained and married us outside on a beautiful sunny fall day at Congressional Country Club.

On our wedding day, we embraced the history of where we come from, but we also made some history of our own!

Garden Wedding at The Liriodendron Mansion

As much as I adore a modern or rustic wedding, I am a true romantic at heart.  A Jane Austen lover who falls head over heels for soft, lush blooms and garden party-esque receptions that will take your breath away.  This, my friends, is one of those weddings.  A drop-dead gorgeous affair that is all about the romance, and all about the pretty.  See it all captured by Redfield Photography in the full gallery.

From the Bride… Peter and I met in middle school, but didn’t start dating until after we graduated from high school. After dating for over eight years, Peter finally decided to propose with the help of our dog, Dexter. Peter made a sign to hang around Dexter’s neck that said “Mommy, will you marry Daddy?” with a little dog paw on the sign. 363 days after Peter proposed, we got married. If I could pick some keywords to describe the overall inspiration and theme we were going for they would be: romantic, classic, and elegant. Nothing too heavy… We wanted a light evening full of love, laughter, family, and friends. We just wanted everything to be classic.

Special touches and DIY projects: We had a live artist (painter) which every single guest thought was pretty amazing! And she was absolutely incredible; a very talented young lady. Also, our dog played a special role, he was in the background of the wedding ceremony, and then after we were officially married he came forward so that we could recess down the aisle as a family. Our beer list was also hand selected by the father of the groom.

DIY PROJECTS:

• Lifesaver mints in cardstock that looked like match books with “R” on them, or the wedding date, or our married monogram in gold pen.

• The toile and navy table numbers in frames—I shopped for frames for several months, picking up one or two here or there, then spray painted all of them gold. I love toile and wanted it in my wedding in some capacity, but not all over, so I had the idea to make the table numbers toile. So with ivory and blue toile wall paper, I cut each piece according to the size of the frame, traced numbers, and then painted the numbers on with navy blue craft paint.

• I also made the “Mr. and Mrs.” sign the same way but used gold paint for a different touch.

Preppy + Chic Waterfront Backyard Wedding

I’m in awe of this one. Somehow it managed to combine so many of my favorite wedding elements: beautiful blooms, stunning gowns, waterside party, family homes, tents AND barns. All in one day, beautifully captured by Adam Barnes Fine Art Photography. I shouldn’t be surprised that it is what it is though, with Simply Chic Events behind the day!

From the beautiful bride…  We have a true love for the Eastern Shore of Maryland. It is our escape from the busy city life here in Washington DC. We could not think of anywhere else we would want to be married. My Husband is Greek and it was a must that we get married in an Orthodox Church. Annapolis Church is unbelievably gorgeous and welcoming. It was also large enough to accommodate our 300 guests. As for the Reception location, we were so excited when Gus’ parents agreed to have the reception on their beautiful property (White Banks Estate) over looking the water.

The weather could not have been more perfect. Having a reception outdoors with no back up it was a huge gamble. We had a clear blue sky and slight breeze and the guest enjoyed a gorgeous Sunset during the Cocktail hour.

Two days before our wedding a massive Hurricane like weather system hit the Eastern Shore which delayed our set up time for the tents and decor. When I left on the property on Friday only one tent was up of three. The main tent was just going up. So much had to happen to transform the Tent into our Barn like structure. We Hired a great team and it all came together as we imagined.

We had all of our parents, Grandparents, and great grandparents Cake toppers from their weddings incorporated in our dessert tablescape. My great grandmothers cake topper dates back to 1920 and is still in great condition! My husbands ‘YiaYia” (grandmother in Greek) made her famous greek cookies and pastries for our dessert bar. It was a beautiful display of yummy treats and family tradition. Throughout the year I asked family members to give the their empty wine bottles I collected and used these for our table numbers.

My father in laws 1959 Chevy Antique truck was a prop we used for our save the dates and used it again as a popcorn display for the guest “Midnight Snack Favor” Guest loved the truck many took pictures with it. We also constructed the inside of the tent to look at like barn by wrapping the poles with old wood to recreate a barn like feel used barrels with flower as accents.

The day went by so fast. But my favorite was our sparkler exit to the car. Gus and I got in the car and looked at each other and said.. “I cant believe we pulled this off.” As we drove away we looked back and admired the work we had done. Gus was very involved with the planning process. We did it together which was import to me.

Annapolis Garden Wedding

You can mark my words, this Annapolis garden fête from Theresa Choi + Blue Sky Films will go down as a Mid-Atlantic fan favorite. With romantic details around every corner and swoon-worthy bloomage for days, there’s no reason not to make a nice, long trip to the gallery for so much more. Join me right here!

From the Bride… My now husband and I were set-up by a close friend, who after numerous attempts of telling me, “I had to meet this guy” I finally succumbed to the discomfort of blind dates and went out with Matt. Maybe friends know best? Fourteen months later we were married by that same friend, who conveniently is an assistant pastor at our church, in a small white chapel dating back to the 1800s. I never had a moment’s hesitation on marrying Matt or where we would celebrate – my parents’ home in their garden. My sister had her reception there ten years earlier and for the most important day of my life I knew there was nowhere with more comfort and preexisting joy. My parents’ home has always reminded me of Orchard house from Little Women and having a “Meg wedding” in their gorgeous garden seemed idyllic.

What started in concept as a more casual garden reception was quickly elevated once the dress was found. Second dress I tried on, called “Tinkerbell” (never got over the fact that my mom made me wear a turtleneck under my tink costume in 4th grade, this must be my 2nd chance, no turtlenecks on your wedding day mom!!), I was done. I added a slim jeweled belt to the dress to define the waist and a custom pink veil was made to match the subtle shade. The gown brought a romantic and more formal attitude to the day and with that French touches, garland, silver pieces, and men in tuxes became appropriate and wonderful additions.

In fact, the French influence was already at the very beginning of our union with my Christian Dior “Oui” ring Matt proposed with. We visit Boston often, where Matt is from and where I went to law school (and no we didn’t meet in Boston funny enough. He actually moved to the DC area when I moved to Boston. What is it they say, timing is everything???). Timing issues resolved, on a trip to Boston together I spied the unique “Oui” ring at Christian Dior and fell in love immediately. After a loooong Frenchy wait for the ring to be made in France and Matt no longer able to wait, he proposed with a ring he made out of paperclips saying, “IOU” instead! Knowing him to be a man of his word I happily said, “oui!” and as with all happy endings, the ring did finally make it to my finger (thank you to John Page at Chevy Chase Christian Dior for making this happen!) and joined many other French details of the day. I selected bundles of olive branches for the boutonnieres and bridesmaid bouquet, which I had seen in traditional French weddings (it is also a symbol of peace and tranquility, definitely an emotion I had marrying Matt), French music from the movie Amélie played while we cut our French inspired wedding cake and a decadent dessert table with macaroons and a traditional French wedding cookie were served.

Even with the more formal feel to the day, Matt and I maintained our personal loves and touches throughout the ceremony and reception. I hand-drew and water colored the artwork for the invitations and programs with a floral design for guests to anticipate the outdoor reception setting. I walked down the aisle to a favorite instrumental piece, “Carl Goes Up” from the animation movie, “Up.” It was the perfect fairytale piece to match the whimsy of the small chapel and my dress. My mom found a wonderful floral and gold fabric that she made table runners for the long banquet tables at the reception. The floral fabric struck the perfect balance of formal with outdoor whimsy with a classic paisley pattern but in a soft palette with gold touches. The tones in this fabric really inspired the soft colors used in the flowers and throughout the rest of the wedding. We used all of my mom’s silver pieces for dinner, coffee service, dessert, the flower girls’ containers, and two antique silver candelabras of my maternal grandmother’s for the dessert table. Using her special silver pieces not only helped formalize the day but made it feel like it was a very personalized event, where we brought out our best pieces for a big celebration.

Another special “silver” piece was Matt’s late grandparents’ canoe, The Bud & Betty, that was displayed with artwork I created to honor their wedding day and ours together. The boat was stationed near the bar and kept self-serve drinks cool for guests who just wanted to grab a beer and prevented the dreaded bar line. We chose one of our cocktails to be a Dark & Stormy as a nod to the Bud & Betty’s unique sail feature. Another signature cocktail featured my grandmother’s famous bourbon slush (a mix of lemonade, tea and, of course, bourbon!) that my sister made and was a huge hit with guests who enjoyed the cool, adult style snow cone in mini martini glasses. In honor of my dear, late maternal grandfather I carried one of his handkerchiefs embroidered with my new initials wrapped around my bouquet. My sister’s married initials are on the same handkerchief from her own wedding. Matt and I also created a moon photo booth from scratch to celebrate a shared favorite scene from “It’s a Wonderful Life,” when George lassos the moon for Mary. It’s the perfect display of both our talents, his engineering skills crafted the structure and I painted the display and the face of the moon.

In addition to our own touches, loved ones contributed their own talents to make it even more special. A friend of mine, who owns a catering company, Paper Fan Catering, created a Dutch Masters inspired cocktail table to reflect my love of those artists. My Aunt Claudette, who I am named after and is a fabulous cook (I just got the name), made special dishes to add to the catered items, including her well loved shrimp appetizer. My mom made several desserts for the dessert buffet too, including Boston cream pie cupcakes, in honor of a our mutually loved city and mini mint chocolate chip bundt cakes, my favorite Thanksgiving dessert.

Guests were brought to the reception in an Annapolis trolley and entered through the front door that was draped in floral garland and flanked with silver lanterns for late night lighting. Inside, a champagne tower, the cocktail table and a schedule of the night’s events were placed near the seating cards which were organized under family surnames. Guests who were friends had their place cards under the title, “Friendmily.”

The interior of the home was covered with more floral garlands and large wreaths to carry the outside garden feel throughout the home. Even with a tight budget I knew there was no way around blowing up a big beautiful flower bill and Wicked Willow was worth every cent! I would say no other vendor exceeded my expectations the way Randy with Wicked Willow did in creating so many blooming masterpieces. He created everything from the vine and floral wedding party hair wreaths to the stunning and wild arrangements for the buffet tables. He got exactly the feel I was going for, soft drapey floral garlands, wreaths, bouquets, but all with substantial presence. He also took on heroic efforts to preserve the last-of-the-season dogwood branches for my own bouquet, knowing my desperate desire for them even past their prime. He is top notch in my book and if I had room in the budget for weekly high-end floral deliveries, he’d be it.

For those active guests who didn’t find staring at sumptuous flowers for an hour enough entertainment, we had yard games on the lawn, near the bar/pool area. Following cocktail hour, the garden gate was opened leading guests to dinner under a large white tent with long banquet style tables filled with gold taper and votive lights and soft touches, including branches from my grandfather’s farm (literally over the hill and through the woods) that were painted gold, with gold nests and soft blue eggs filled with fresh blooms all seated on the floral runners my mom made. The dinner and dessert buffets were placed in the garden with the cherry tree my dad planted for my sister’s wedding in full bloom, gleaming with strung lights as a backdrop. The dinner included a classic early summer dinner menu of Southern glazed ham, orzo with chicken and summer vegetables, corn pudding cakes, summer potato salad, yeast rolls and a salad of goat cheese and fresh strawberries from a local farm. Those strawberries appeared on the cocktail table, dinner salad and the dessert buffet. My aunt graciously picked literally buckets of these fresh berries the day before the wedding. My mom’s delicious homemade preserves were also on the dinner table, to accompany the yeast rolls, made with strawberries from the same farm – we have been dedicated patrons of this farm since I was a child. After dinner, we danced to classic tunes from Sam Cooke to Aretha Franklin, with one or two current tunes making an appearance before heading through a, frequently seen but no less fun, sparkler exit to our getaway car.

We are old souls and the day touched on that with traditional, romantic decor, food and tunes, winks to loved ones gone too soon, and classic movies we can’t get enough of. We spent a perfect 72 degree Maryland day (thankfully since I did my own hair!) laughing, eating and dancing in a familiar garden on a uniquely special and magical night. The soft setting of the garden leant itself perfectly to creating a whimsical outdoor wedding reception that was a dreamy concoction of Orchard house with personal and French touches. The day did have it hitches – such as our wedding cake getting pre-guillotined (not a desirable French touch by the way) – but so many things went right, we got to create a wedding that didn’t come in a box, exhibited our shared loves and we got hitched! Just as Style Me Pretty showcases, these are fabulous days to be a bride, when personalization and style are without limits and couples are free to create a non-cookie-cutter day that truly reflects them. That’s truly the best.

Pink Tidewater Inn Wedding

The Tidewater Inn is one of my all time favorite Maryland venues and you’re about to see why. This beautiful couple made it official in the ridiculously pretty courtyard with their nearest and dearest all around. I’ve been feeling the love from Melissa Barrick Photography’s images all morning long!

From the beautiful bride… Dan proposed in September of 2011, while we were on vacation in Greece. On our first night in Mykonos, while we sat on our terrace watching the sunset, Dan tossed me a small red apple, with a ribbon tied to its stem. The ribbon was attached to the cap of a Snapple iced tea bottle (my favorite), and the “Real Fact” inside it read, “Real Fact # 816: In Ancient Greece, throwing an apple to a woman was considered a marriage proposal.” He asked me to spend the rest of my life with him, and of course I said YES!

We knew we wanted a summer wedding, but did not want to rush the planning to make it all happen in the summer of 2012. Instead, we opted for a long engagement and chose June 1, 2013 as our wedding day.

We chose the Tidewater Inn as our venue early on for a number of reasons. It was a perfect meeting point for most of my family (coming from Maryland’s Eastern Shore), Dan’s family (coming from Southern Maryland and the Annapolis area), and most of our friends (coming from Baltimore and Washington). The Tidewater also provided a fabulous “one stop shop” – they had a beautiful ceremony venue in their garden courtyard, a large ballroom that could accommodate our ever-growing guest list and a big band, and a fantastic in-house kitchen. But I think the single most important thing in our decision ended up being the wedding coordinator, Melanie Bennett, and her amazing team, who said “YES!” to every request we had and made the entire day a huge success.

We also chose our photographer – Melissa Barrick – very early on. I found her through a friend’s photos posted on Facebook and was really taken by the beautiful, almost vintage quality of her photos and the way she always seemed to capture really wonderful moments between the bride and groom. Needless to say, she was fantastic!

Our families were a huge help throughout the entire process – it was a big collaboration, and the end result included little pieces of everyone. Dan’s mom has a real talent for design, and she handmade our rehearsal dinner invitations and ceremony programs. The incredible Swiss Cottage Designs created our save-the-dates (an homage to Dan’s proposal) and wedding invitations (which had more of a nautical Eastern Shore theme). My parents had the idea of letting guests choose their own seats for the reception, which worked out wonderfully. I also chose “La Vie En Rose” by Edith Piaf for my walk down the aisle, in part to pay tribute to my European roots, but also because it is a song my mom and I have always loved.

For my dress, I wanted something classic, yet romantic with a vintage feel. The intricate lace design on the bodice and the chiffon flower petals on the chapel train were what really captured my attention on the Tara Keely by Lazaro gown I ended up choosing. Extra special details were my Omi’s (“grandma” in German) ivory lace purse and handkerchief, which were both “something old” and “something borrowed.” I had a very specific idea of what I wanted for my jewelry, and Marcia Cupshalk, a jewelry designer and one of my mom’s good friends, was kind enough to create custom pieces for both the wedding and rehearsal dinner. Dan chose to have his suit made by Christopher Shafer in Baltimore. I am obviously biased, but I think he looked incredibly handsome! Ryan Hicks, my longtime hair stylist and good friend, did a masterful job getting me and my 8 bridesmaids coiffed, and Aida Alcoser-Matters from Estee Lauder did her makeup magic.

For the ceremony, we decided to be married by the judge I had worked for after law school, whom we both know well and like very much. Dan and I had long ago decided to write our own vows, and I think this exchange was one of the most special parts of the entire day. Dan’s sister also read a passage from “On Love” by Thomas A. Kempis, and another one of my best friends read the poem, “The Promise,” by Eileen Rafter.

If there is one word that sums up our day perfectly, it is LOVE – and not just in the romantic sense of the word. My family is unique in that my parents, though divorced, remain the very best of friends (including my dad and step-dad). All three of the people I consider my parents – my mom, dad, and step-dad – gave wonderful, heartfelt speeches. Their love for me, Dan, and each other, was readily apparent and really bathed the whole evening in a warm, beautiful glow. Combining this with Dan’s amazing family and our incredible friends truly made for the most unforgettable evening. We chose to have pies from Dangerously Delicious instead of a wedding cake (also a little shout-out to Baltimore), and they were a big hit. Rollex Band kept the party going well beyond our scheduled end time, and really brought down the house with their finale of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin,” which was one of the “last call” songs at Dan’s and my favorite bar at the University of Maryland. The only thing missing was our beloved Corgi-mix, Winston, who we decided to leave back in Baltimore (he’s not one for crowds!). In lieu of traditional wedding favors, we made a donation in his honor to the Humane Society of Kent County.

All of the hoping, dreaming, and planning finally came together into one incredibly fun, love-filled weekend. It truly felt perfect, and we could not have asked for anything more!

Glittery New Years Eve Party Ideas

Happy New Year loves! We have a special present for those of you who are still scrambling to plan tonight’s party, and it has glitter. Joy Michelle Photography sent this beauty over and we’re loving the gold!

From the photographer… This shoot was inspired by the glitter and fun of a retro New Years Eve party. I wanted to shoot a classic dinner table set up outdoors with a beautiful gold tinsel backdrop for a photo-booth feel. Many of the gold elements have a retro feel with a twist- like the cake design. This table and backdrop could easily be duplicated for a New Years Eve celebration or winter themed wedding. In my research for this shoot, I noticed a lot of winter events using cranberries in the decor so I had fun incorporating that into the ice bucket for the champaign and the cake decor.

A couple of my favorite elements are the custom stationery designs with hand-done calligraphy, as well as the flakey glitter you will see all over this shoot! The glitter added such a tactile movement to the images that I feel really makes them POP.

From head to toe this inspiration shoot was styled and executed with intentionality down to the very smallest detail. Even the dresses and makeup looks were picked with the retro/vintage theme. I have included the recipes used for the desserts and the DIY guide I used to assemble my own party poppers which are super cute and fun for any holiday party.

I had SO much fun putting this together, styling, but most of all shooting it! The models for this shoot are good friends of mine and I just love the emotion in the photos! I have included the recipe for the cheesecakes and the DIY party popper instructions I used to make the poppers which are so easy and festive!
