An Insider’s Guide To Your Birmingham Wedding

When it comes to tying the knot, Birmingham is one of those hidden gems that makes your wedding weekend just as fun as it is stylish. Trust us, just one stop in “The Magic City” and you’ll be smitten. Which is why we’re teaming up The Westin Birmingham to bring you a little insider’s guide on how to make the most of your Birmingham celebration. From fun activities to amazing restaurants, we’ve got you covered.

BEST SPOT FOR PHOTO OPS

Our Pick: The Westin Birmingham.

Why we love it: We all know that choosing a venue with stellar photo ops is sooo important, and The Westin Birmingham will definitely not disappoint. We can’t get over the vertical wall and stairs combo that jumps out at you the second you walk into the lobby (hello, drama) AND the views of Uptown from the rooftop pool. Taking those newlywed images to an entirely new (breathtaking) level has never been easier.

Our Pick: Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Why we love it: Three words: sooo many flowers. Plus, gorgeous greenery and awe-inspiring structures, too. Which means that you can snap those moments with your love surrounded by everything from beautiful roses to tulips to camellias, the perfect backdrop for those fall wedding captures. Bonus? It’s just a 10 minute drive from The Westin Birmingham, so you don’t have to miss your entire cocktail hour.

FAVE RESTAURANTS

Our Pick: Todd English P.U.B.

Why we love it: No wedding is complete without a fabulous lineup of restaurants on the itinerary, and if one of those restaurants happens to be in the lobby of The Westin Birmingham? Even better. Todd English P.U.B. boasts a full Raw Bar, plus a lineup of traditional American “comfort foods” that will leave your tummies happy. And the Bloody Mary Cart? A must for your morning-after brunch AND a quick jaunt down from your luxe accommodations.

Our Pick: Perry’s Steakhouse

Why we love it: Just a short 20 minute Uber from The Westin Birmingham’s Uptown location, Perry’s Steakhouse is one of our fave spots in Birmingham. Why? It’s tasty award-winning menu will get you every. single. time. and the cocktails are super tasty. We suggest trying this locale out for a yummy rehearsal dinner or bachelor/bachelorette party.

Our Pick: Galley and Garden

Why we love it: And speaking of rehearsal dinners, the Galley and Garden is a beautiful spot for that night-before celebration with your nearest and dearest. We’re sort of obsessed with the historic Merritt House locale and the beautiful private dining options will really make your evening stand out. Oh, and the food? Spectacular.

FUN ACTIVITIES

Our Pick: Top Golf Birmingham

Why we love it: Guys, Top Golf is the best. Whether you’ve never picked up a club in your life, or happen to be the next Jordan Spieth, trust us on this one: you and your guests will love it. Plus, with good food, good drinks and fun to be had by all, it’s the perfect spot for any of those pre-wedding parties you have on the lineup… or a getaway with your love post-nuptials.

Our Pick: Sips n Strokes

Why we love it: If you’re looking for a more laid-back activity, Sips n Strokes is IT. Think wine, painting (your very own works of art) and tons of laughs with your besties. We’re loving this Birmingham hot spot as an amazing girls’ getaway with your bridal party – or a fun activity with all of your nearest and dearest who are in town to celebrate you and your love.

Our Pick: Locked in Birmingham

Why we love it: Having a list of activities for your guests is one of the most important parts of planning your Big Day and they’ll absolutely LOVE you when you add this brain charger to their itinerary. Because nothing says “bonding experience” quite like a game that requires you to use clues to escape from a room with your friends and family. So fun, you guys.

Ready to plan the week or weekend of a lifetime? Contact The Westin Birmingham as your starting point. They’ll take care of all of your wedding dreams (luxe accommodations, beautiful venues) and the city of Birmingham will handle the rest of the fun.

The Perfect Blueprint for an Ethereal New Orleans Wedding

If there were a wedding dictionary, this photo shoot would sit right at the top of the list for all things whimsical. With SIX incredible Little Black Book members behind the beauty including Kim Starr Wise, Blue Gardenia Events, Nuage Designs, Melissa’s Fine Pastries, Bella Belle and Lance Nicoll to capture it all, the beauty is bursting at the seams. Which detail is your favorite?

From Nuage DesignsThe following images, shot on film by Lance Nicoll, are inspired by Lord Bryon’s famous words “she walks in beauty like the night, of cloudless climes and starry skies.” In a place where dark and light come together, a place that time forgot – but, where memories hold fast. Abandoned ruins of a plantation that burned long ago provide the backdrop for this dramatic, ethereal, & deeply romantic inspiration.

Lush and grand florals by Kim Starr Wise adorn a dramatic tablescape with gilded details in a palette of soft grays, blush, magenta, & lilac with pops of teal and black. Our two brides are dramatic yet modern, soft yet vivid in their Kelly Faetanini and Berta Gowns. Two wildly lush bouquets are just the beginning of the floral touches. A floral sash is the perfect new accent for the modern yet classic bride; while an imposing floral headpiece is an ideal statement piece. The teal and black cake by Melissa’s Fine Pastries is perfectly set against a gently blowing blush damask linen by Nuage Designs. The lounge area again has dramatic florals cascading down a vintage settee with pops of teal and blush – a perfectly wild palette against a backdrop of lush overgrown foliage and pale gray columns. Walk amongst the ruins…to another time, another place. The ruins still stand, the memories remain, the romance continues.

Classic New Orleans Wedding Complete with an Heirloom Dress

From an antique engagement ring to her grandmother’s wedding dress worn for her first dance, this Bride is all about “Something Old”. And that sentiment fits right in with a New Orlean’s celebration filled with classic details styled by Victoria Austin and lovely NOLA charm captured through the images of Greer Gattuso and lens of Bride Film. See it all unfold, including the perfect Second Line parade, right here.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/222399788 600 338]

From the Bride… The dress I wore for our first dance is actually very special to me. My Grammy was like a second mother to me, as well as my best friend. She is no longer with us, but I was honored to wear her wedding dress and have her with me, in a way, for my first dance. It was a very special moment, not only for me, but also for my mother and her two sisters. (And yes, it is blue, but it really was her wedding dress! I like to think I get my individuality from her )

I think Grammy also inspired my penchant for antiques. We spent months searching for the perfect antique engagement ring and finally found my circa 1890 pink sapphire ring at Erstwhile Jewelry, a boutique store in NYC owned by a fifth-generation jeweler. My wedding band is a reproduction of a Tiffany & Co., also circa 1890, as the original could not be re-sized. I love knowing that my ring had a history before us and that we aren’t contributing to any unethical gemstone mining or trade practices. For our first dance, we knew we wanted a song from the ’50s and finally settled on “When I Fall in Love”, as performed by Nat “King” Cole. We took some dance lessons with the lowly intention of breaking out of our standard “turn in a circle” move, but we ended up having so much fun that our first dance became one of our favorite moments both preceding and during our wedding day. Our favorite moment, however, was exchanging our wedding vows in front of all of our loved ones. We were blessed to have my best friend, Reverend Felsha Foster, perform our marriage ceremony. Felsha has been my best friend since the third grade, so we have shared some amazing memories over the years, but having her unite us in marriage was by far the best. Finally, working with you, Greer, was a dream. Prior to the wedding, Ryan was worried that he would feel self-conscious about the photography and videography, but we hardly even remembered we were being photographed and filmed.

New York City Lovebirds Wed in New Orleans

This New Your City couple wanted their wedding to be timeless, romantic, and sweet, and they couldn’t have chosen a more perfect location—New Orleans. Complete with twinkling lights hovering over the courtyard, Erika Parker captured their I do’s and the stunning bridal portraits below. Head to the full gallery for more!

From the bride…We fell in love in New York City. It must have been our destiny to meet each other in a city of more than 8 million people. Five years later he proposed on a sunset walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. That night, he shared his dream that we get married in a small courtyard with twinkling lights. From that moment, we knew New Orleans was the perfect destination. We wanted our wedding to feel timeless, romantic, and sweet. The New Orleans Pharmacy Museum was the first pharmacy in America, and the perfect blend of the old with the new. Its rich history and beautiful courtyard were the ideal backdrop for our intimate wedding. Our florist incorporated soft touches of blush tones, with roses and dahlias, that added a beautiful elegance to the evening. Our wedding cake and delicious treats for the dessert bar were homemade with love by our families. And our mutual love for jazz filled the night—from the second line band, to the Louis Armstrong soundtrack we played throughout the evening. We loved seeing our guests enjoy the wedding together and celebrating our love. We couldn’t have dreamt of a better place than NOLA for our special day.

Southern Wedding Complete with the Sound of New Orleans Jazz in the Air

From start to finish, this New Orleans wedding planned by Blue Gardenia Events along with florals by Poppy and Mint is layered in classic elegance. It has the signature Southern style mixed with cozy details that give Il Mercato the feel of home… just with a lot more champagne and the sound of New Orleans jazz in the air. In other words, it’s perfection captured by Greer Gattuso. See every last gorgeous image right here.

Cozy and warm and effortlessly chic, Alice & Mike’s wedding day evoked a relaxed sophistication with layers of texture and elegance woven throughout. Surrounded by her sisters & her closest friends, Alice started her day at the beautiful & historic Windsor Court hotel. However, Alice had one little secret… Her very high heels from the night before combined with a traditional New Orleans second line led to some unfortunate blisters! But, Alice did not let it ruin her day for one second – she opted for her comfy tennis shoes and on she went! Alice is a classic Southern beauty & looked completely timeless in her Rivini gown & cathedral length veil. When Mike saw his bride for the first time outside of where they would saw their vows, everything fell into place & the day truly began. Alice and Mike had a beautiful and traditional service at Rayne Methodist church. Following the service, everyone gathered at Il Mercato for cocktail, dinner, & dancing. Guests were greeted with champagne and sounds of New Orleans Jazz wafting through the air. The night continued with traditional creole faire from Joel Catering and thoughtful touches around every corner. Alice wanted to combine organic elements such as wood, muted gold, aged silver, and lavish greenery against a backdrop of pale blues, grays, & creams. Lush velvet, oxford, & silk linens from Nuage Designs complemented these elements bringing in layers of texture. Twinkling candlelight and abundant florals from Poppy & Mint topped off the overall aesthetic giving everything an intimate, “your home,” feel… A relaxed sophistication. Timeless and elegant, Alice & Mike’s wedding day was pure perfection from start to finish.

Pretty in Pink New Orleans Wedding

Mindy and Harold’s wedding is proof that you don’t have to leave the U.S. for a destination experience. See even more of this charming lovefest with a trip of your own right inside the gallery.

The Recipe for a Whimsical Southern Wedding

Time and again, I’ve heard brides-to-be tell me how they found inspiration for their big day on Style Me Pretty, making it such an honor to log on every day. But the credit goes to our Little Black Book members and vendors for constantly creating the pretty for us to showcase. That lovely at hand? A dose of Southern wedding inspiration, infused with whimsy—blooms crafted with care by Poppy + Mint, details designed by Logan Doerries Design and Melissa’s Fine Pastries on cake duty… all which make for one stunner of a gallery.

From Poppy + Mint Floral CompanyWe were supremely inspired by the grounds of Southern Oaks Plantation, and Logan of Logan Doerries Design styled the shoot to highlight a theme of whimsical elegance and Southern charm! The moss covered trees, and the stately columns of the venue provided the most stunning backdrop to accomplish this theme. Overall, we wanted the shoot to be romantic and timeless. The gown provided by Wedding Belles tied our theme together, perfectly! We wanted to stay within a mostly neutral palette while still incorporating subtly colorful tones, and Destiny with Poppy + Mint Floral Company created the most breathtaking floral that perfectly fit this bill. The floral inspired cake provided by Melissa’s Fine Pastries complimented the florals in a lovely way! We also highlighted other southern elements such as the horses dressed in greenery wreaths, a classic rolls royce, and magnolia leaves and moss from the property to accent our custom stationery suite by Lady Adelaide, and southern details recently acquired from the Magnolia in Waco! Marissa Lambert captured the day through film, which gave a dreamy and ethereal vibe that radiated through each photograph.

New Yorkers Tie the Knot in New Orleans’ French Quarter

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to pull out your passport for a destination wedding. In fact, New Yorkers, Megan and Will, chose to simply bring all their people down south for a lovefest in the French Quarter. The incredible Lance Nicoll photographed their 3-day celebration and come wedding day the NOLA Dukes kept guests partying well into the night. Congrats to Megan and Will!

From Lance NicollMegan and Will, New York City residents and avid travelers, brought their international crowd of family and friends to New Orleans for a 3-day event that culminated in their wedding celebration. Megan and Will began the day with a first look because they wanted to spend every minute possible together. The courtyard of the French Quarter home rental was where they first saw each other on their wedding day. A short but eventful walk led Megan and Will to their wedding party for beautiful family portraits on the steps of the New Orleans Courthouse, which sits across the street from their ceremony location.

At the conclusion of their joyous union, the newly married couple and guests marched with their very own brass band down the gorgeous Marche. Guests were then treated to an elegant sit-down dinner and proceeded to dance the night away.

Avid sailors, the couple had Bittersweet Confections create the cutest sailboat themed groom’s cake to accompany the wedding cake. Firefly Ambiance saw to it that the design work of Weddings By LuLu was perfectly accented. Floral design, which included a beautiful ceremony arch, was done by the talented Fat Cat Flowers. Megan’s elegant white and blush filled wedding day was filled with both joy and love.

Because showing off that sassy side will only make your party that much more fun. Need help achieving that dream, out-of-the-box celebration? We’re runnimpong down a list of four steps that are guaranteed to make that happen… and all with the help of the W Atlanta – Buckhead. Dive in below.

ONE: CHOOSE A WEDDING VENUE THAT EMBRACES YOUR VISION

It all starts with the right locale, which means finding a place that will embrace your unique ideas and throw that wedding rule book out the window. We’re thinking a prime spot in the heart of the city like the W Atlanta – Buckhead with its gorgeous venue options and awesome accommodations that your guests will absolutely love. I mean, this is more than just a wedding… this is the party of the century. And you need a location that will totally get on board.

TWO: MAKE IT A WEDDING WEEKEND, NOT JUST AN EVENING

You’ve never been one to do things by the book – and saying “I do” to the one you love is a celebration that should last as long as possible. So instead of just partying for one night, why not turn your wedding into one of the best vacations you’ll ever take, fab friends + family included? Just make sure to fill your itinerary with an endless amount of fun-filled activities, like shopping, entertainment and dining at the best restaurants.

THREE: SURPRISE YOUR GUESTS WITH THOUGHTFUL TOUCHES

Choosing a venue like the W Atlanta – Buckhead? It’s the first step to winning over your guests. The second step? Filling their stay with thoughtful touches that will really make a statement. From welcome bags that celebrate your hosting city to a pre-wedding parties at amazing restaurants to luxe accommodations, you’ll want to make sure they truly enjoy their stay. Oh, and don’t forget to liven things up with crazy cool events, like scavenger hunts around the city and a goodbye brunch. They’ve never been to a party this.

FIVE: HOST THE ULTIMATE AFTER PARTY

Completely Classic New Orleans Wedding

This wedding photographed by Lance Nicoll is like a love letter to New Orleans. It’s the city where the bride, Molly grew up and she couldn’t think of a better spot to begin her forever with Matthew. From their classic church ceremony to the botanical garden reception, Molly and Matthew’s special day is what timeless elegance is all about.

From Lance Nicoll... Molly is passionate about her home where she grew up and wanted her Fall wedding to be inspired by its location. The oyster shell ring dishes and pearl invitations with custom illustrations fit seamlessly into the violet and cream color scheme. The bride and bridesmaids spent the morning at Molly’s childhood home and were adorned in violet gowns. The Church ceremony was downtown at the Immaculate Conception, a beautifully ornate and classic New Orleans Church. The day wedding continued at the Botanical Gardens where guests were invited to spend time in the lush gardens, enjoying music, food, and time with friends and family.

Intimate Elopement of Lush Greens, Soft Whites & Lace Galore

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again – if I was given a wedding re-do, an intimate elopement is most definitely the way I’d go. Just an utterly romantic day without all the big wedding fuss and only our very dearest along to celebrate. It’d look exactly like this inspiration shoot captured by Emily Fuselier and there’s so much more to see right here in the gallery.

We wanted to start the day off with an intimate session of the couple to really set the mood for the rest of the day. You can tell how much in love and affection they have for each other. We really wanted the different sets of images to showcase the different settings and emotions that go into the wedding day. Even during a small intimate elopement, we wanted to capture it as if you were really there and you could feel the excitement and joy from the couple.

We designed their wedding to compliment what the south has to offer; lush greens, soft whites, lace and plenty of sunshine was key. The bride loves white florals, so we decided to make them pop a little more to accent them with the brass candleholders and flatware. We wanted to really emphasize the emotions that go on during a wedding for the bride and groom, from the moment they wake up all the way to the reception.

Historic New Orleans Fete Complete with a Second Line Brass Band

If you are going to have a traditional New Orleans wedding, you better believe a second line parade for the new Mr. and Mrs. is in order. And that is only the beginning of this classic meets modern celebration held at the family’s estate and crafted by Everly. Also on the docket, not one but 3 insanely gorgeous dresses dawned by the fashion blogger Bride. Take a peek at the full celebration captured by Elisa Bricker right here.

From the Photographer… Fashion blogger and bride, Bridget Ryan, chose to get married in her historic home town and celebrated her wedding at the family home. Their wedding was steeped in tradition, but her personal style is modern and fresh, so blending tradition and bringing in modern touches was important. Her husband and his family are French, so their wedding was also a blend of cultural tradition, and friends from around the world. They married these styles and traditions in a graceful ceremony at the church where she grew up and celebrated their wedding in the back hard of her family’s private estate. Of course, since it was a New Orleans wedding there were local traditions such as a king cake for guests in their welcome bags, beads galore, and a second line to celebrate the new couple!

From Lance Nicoll PhotographyFernanda and Farere hosted their wedding in New Orleans, Louisiana, centered around the unique and character filled French Quarter. The day began with a joyful first look in Armstrong Park. Family and friends met the lovely couple at the home of Farere’s parents for family formals. In the evening, the couple and wedding party gathered for a formal church wedding and then went to the main ballroom of the Westin at Canal Place. The couple’s entrance was filled with energy as they burst into the room, dancing with guests before taking their seats for their formal sit down dinner. Gold and blush accents were met with deep purple and dark gray tones for an untraditional but sophisticated color palette for the wedding day.

A Wedding in NOLA Is Always a Good Idea

The French Quarter of New Orleans was the perfect choice for this couple’s destination wedding – they wanted to say “I do” in an exuberant city! Marissa Lambert captured the celebration (on film and video!), which included a lively second line parade to kick off the joy-filled night. A team of incredible vendors including Sapphire Events, Poppy and Mint Floral Company, and Melissa’s Fine Pastries put together the classic, festive event, and you can see it all right here.

From Sapphire EventsLauren knew from the moment she had met Colin, she was going to marry him. The couple dreamed of a destination wedding located in an exuberant city full of fun and happiness – New Orleans was the answer. The ceremony and reception were held at The Chicory, located right outside the heart of the French Quarter.

The ceremony decor focused on deep burgundy, ivory, and gold accents. The altar arrangement consisted of one large wreath and two smaller wreaths made of grapevines by Poppy & Mint. These wreaths perfectly foreshadowed the nine hanging grapevine spheres created by Luminous Events that guests would admire at the reception. Throughout the reception, centerpieces alternated between gold candelabras accented with flowers and full flower arrangements accented with gold votives. The marriage between the floral and candle decor gave a lush and illuminating ambiance to the reception. Above the stunning wedding cake, made by Melissa’s Fine Pastries, hung glass bubble tea lights of various lengths (also seen above the buffet). The celebration went into the night as guests joined the Bride, Groom, and family on the dance floor until the very last moment.

An Ethereal Wedding Inspo Session

It was raining all week leading up to this New Orleans inspiration session by Erika Parker Photography, but the rain clouds cleared just long enough for her to capture these images – and we’re so glad they did! With exquisite bridesmaids in Jenny Yoo and Nouvelle Amsale and calligraphy by Pigment and Parchment that makes our hearts skip a beat, this wedding inspo is worth getting lost in.

From Erika Parker PhotographyThis shoot had been on my mind for over a year before I actually started working on putting the pieces together. New Orleans has some really incredible buildings and architecture, and I always look for locations that have a timeless feel to them. We had some amazing vendors collaborate with us. Pigment and Parchment made the most incredible calligraphy suite that blew me away when it arrived in the mail. I couldn’t wait to shoot it! On the day of, it had been pouring for days. In New Orleans, it usually only rains for a short while at a time, but this particular week, it rained all week. I was so worried we would have to cancel. Somehow, for about two hours in the afternoon, the rain stopped, and the sun came out. It was just enough time to make the shoot happen. About five minutes after we got back in the car, the rain started again. Despite the mud and overcast weather, the images turned out beautiful!

A Sweet Hometown Wedding with Personal Touches

Maybe you’ve never heard of Crowley, Louisiana before today but I guarantee you’ll be happy to virtually visit with this hometown affair. The photographer-turned-bride brought a thoughtful eye for style to every component of the day, including the reception dinner hosted in the couple’s own backyard. Catherine Guidry photographed and we’re thrilled to welcome these stunning images to our pages.

From the bride… Guy ask girl to be his wife, girl says yes. The rest is history. Well, this was not exactly our story. After eight years of long distance dating, we both finally settled in our hometown. We bought a house that needed a complete renovation. With my architecture turned photographer background and my husbands handy skills, we worked endlessly on our flip house. One night after a long days work, I said, “We’ve been dating eight years, adopted two cats, and renovated a house…ok, do you want to get married now? ” He laughed and replied, “Sure!” No ring, no fancy proposal, but it was our story and I love it.

As a photographer, I envisioned a romantic natural light, outdoor wedding for our special day. We opted to host our wedding in the city that is most dear to our hearts: Crowley, Louisiana – rice capital of American and our sweet hometown. I designed our wedding crest made of rice, which was the theme for the day. This crest was printed on the invitations, napkins, cookies and more.

Our color palette was storm blue, ivory, and peach using inspiration from my dress and the rice theme for our decor. It seemed fitting that my main color was “Storm Blue” as it rained all day until 10 minutes before walking down the isle. As I was waiting in the vintage Cadillac to walk down the aisle, the sun peeked through the clouds. I looked at my dad, he smiled and said, “It’s your day, I knew it would all work out my sweetie!” He was right, I could not have dreamed it better.

We decided on the “Moody Property,” a secluded piece of land surrounded by 100-year-old oak trees, for our ceremony. Our childhood homes are three miles away from each other, the Moody Property is exactly in the middle of the two. We thought it was perfect middle ground from where we both grew up to celebrate with our 30 closest friends and family…including our 9 nieces and nephews dressed in heirloom lace attire. The violinist softly played “Sicilliano” by Birckenstock in the background as we read our handwritten vows to each other. I was so excited to see the ring he chose for me when we changed our vows. I had technically proposed to him, so he waited until our wedding day to give me the non-traditional, yellow gold, vintage-inspired ring that he said “looked like it was made just for me,” it was perfect. We exited hand-in-hand with the sweetest petal toss by all the kids.

For the reception, we celebrated over a lovely catered dinner in the backyard of our newly renovated home. The reception was full of personal details such as individually monogrammed napkins, my grandmother’s china, hand-written signage and the bar my husband built. My favorite part of my wedding day was sitting on the swing with my new husband watching our families mingle, seeing our nieces and nephews running barefoot in the yard chasing our two cats, and watching the sunset from the rainy day that turned out to be so beautiful. What was most important to us was executing a vision that was not only personal to the place but to us as a couple.
