Organic New Orleans Wedding Inspiration

New Orleans has a worn beauty that is incomparable. A distressed kind of charm that laces it’s fingers with weddings for some seriously gorgeous results—see what I mean? Oh, Marissa Lambert you work magic, you do. Kim Starr Wise, you’ve made all my floral dreams come true, and Distressed Rentals & Revival, you bring the character with your lovely rentals. THE VAULT gallery is ridiculously pretty friends—come join me!

From Marissa LambertThis shoot was seamlessly styled by Audra O’Dom of Distressed Rentals & Revival for a one-on-one workshop that I hosted for the incredibly talented Lindsey Mueller. Lindsey requested to photograph a shoot filled with elegance as well as details that represent the history and culture of New Orleans. The historic Marigny Opera House was the perfect venue for Lindsey’s request. The lovely stained glass, tarnished walls, and the colorful floor provided a truly breathtaking setting! We strived to create a very simple and organic feel to the details while maintaining rich color and elegance. Further, the models made this shoot very special. Danielle and Eric are a real couple that are engaged to be married next year! The love they share is vibrant and electric, and it was such an honor to photograph real love during this shoot!

Transatlantic Love Story from Bride Film

Do you like love stories? I’ve a feeling you do, so settle in m’dears for a real gem. Southern belle meets Irish lad on spring break, falls in love and embarks on an adventure that brings us all the way to their wedding day, captured in pure beauty by Bride Film. From the floral-filled church to the classic cake by Melissa’s Fine Pastries, it was a fairy tale brought to life. Grab some tissues and get ready to get happy.

From Bride Film… Tanya and Conor have such a unique relationship spanning the course of nine years and multiple continents. Their wedding celebration was clearly a grand beginning to their long awaited marriage, and we loved hearing about it through their family and friends’ wonderful speeches!

From the Bride… Conor and I met when he visited his best friend who was studying in my hometown of New Orleans. We hit it off instantly, and after only a few days decided to make it work, despite the fact that Conor is from and was living in Dublin, Ireland. It has now been over nine years, with both of us living together in London for the past seven. Having lived abroad for so many years, it was really important for me to have the wedding back home in New Orleans. There were so many elements that made our day special, but most of all it had to be the many Irish and English friends and family that flew to the incredible city of New Orleans to celebrate with us.

The ceremony took place in a decommissioned Catholic Church, The Marigny Opera House, that we filled to the brim with trees, foliage and flowers, courtesy of Dunn and Sonnier, as a juxtaposition to the seemingly derelict, historic building. We wanted the ceremony to be extremely personal, so we asked one of Conor’s best friends from Dublin (and the husband of one my best friends – a story for another time!) to conduct the ceremony, shared personal vows and had specially selected songs and readings from our friends and family. A highlight was a rendition of Bob Marley’s “This Is Love,” sung by my cousin and performed on the piano by my uncle.

Following the ceremony, we rode to the reception venue, Latrobe’s, in a traditional New Orleans horse and cart and celebrated with the passers-by. The cocktail hour at Latrobe’s, included a local jazz band and New Orleans fare, including Mint Juleps, fried oysters and crawfish cakes. The wedding cake, from Melissa’s Fine Pastries, was a simple white, covered in real flowers that echoed the table decorations. The surprise groom’s cake, was a large salted caramel cake, in the shape of a pint of Guinness!

We had a sit down meal with speeches, as is tradition in Ireland. The sit down meal was again classically New Orleans cuisine with a starter of shrimp and grits, followed by two taster mains of red fish and duck. After dinner, we hit the dance floor, with our first dance being the maybe not so traditional “Let’s Get It On” – the first song we ever danced to. Around midnight, we surprised the guests by having a brass band enter the venue to start a traditional New Orleans second line. Of course, this was a first for many of our out of town guests! We danced through the streets, waving hankies until we reached the after party venue, Bevolo’s Light Shop, where the party continued into the early hours of the morning.

Citrus Inspired Couple’s Shower

If you’re one of those people hanging on to the last bits of summer before pumpkin spice everything takes over, this couple’s shower is for you. It’s sweet as can be with bright pops of yellow plus playful nods to the bride and groom’s home states, and it has everything to do with the vendors behind it. Melissa’s Fine Pastries made the prettiest of cakes, Baraya Hall designed the details and Marissa Lambert is to thank for every image in The Vault.

From Baraya Hall Event DesignWhat New Orleanian doesn’t love a good party?! So, when we were approached to design a couple’s shower in honor of a bride hailing from Pennsylvania and a local groom, we envisioned it to be a chic summer celebration. We learned of the bride’s love for a good Pimm’s Cup, a refreshing and fruity gin cocktail that originated in England, and from there, our idea for a Polo-inspired, preppy chic garden party was born.

Infusing soft cremes and dove greys added the perfect amount of warmth to the all-white color palette. Bright and cheery pops of orange and yellow also complemented the neutral theme and were achieved by incorporating citrus arrangements in the décor, cake and drink garnishes. As a nod to the preppy theme, we designed a custom crest for the couple that was replicated on the invitation suite and favors.

All of the elements of the décor, from a custom built bar and floral boxes to the linens to the dessert table, were designed to be very tailored, neat and tidy. Silver trays and trophy vases adorned the tables and were reminiscent of the summer Polo matches of the English countryside. Guests nibbled on fruit ceviche, tea sandwiches and caprese skewers to keep cool and accompanied it with traditional New Orleans soul food. To integrate the couple’s native states, we created Pennsylvania and Louisiana themed favors complete with a sweet treat for the guests to take home.

We worked with some of the industry’s most creative event professionals to achieve our vision and their collaborations couldn’t have been more perfect!

Ethereal Forest Bridal Inspiration

When I was a little girl, I’d explore the woods beyond my house, diving into my own magical world. This shoot by Ryan Ray brought me back to those days and I couldn’t be happier. Sapphire Events set up a scene worthy of my fantasies and with Kim Starr Wise’s floral creations, I’m struggling to focus on anything today but this beauty. Work can wait; I need much more time in this wonderous world.

Colors

From Sapphire Events… Set in a pine forest on the outskirts of mystic New Orleans, this ethereal design evokes a sense of hushed urgency in the serenity and quiet calm of nature at sunset. The Sarah Janks gown is simple and intimate with its flowing layers of silk organza and its daringly high slit, catching the breeze as our bride briskly skips from patch of grass to cool leaves on the forest ground. Into the woods she treads nimbly and effortlessly, anxious to find herself in her husband’s warm embrace. Her bouquet – a wild and unruly collection gathered by the best florist in New Orleans, takes shape with blooms and greens sourced from the surroundings, as though the bride foraged her own assembly of forest blossoms just prior to her escape into the arms of her betrothed.

Whimsical + Romantic New Orleans Wedding

What do you get when you take the ever chic style of New Orleans, add in a dash of Disney, and throw in one dashing couple? One fabulously fun fete that’s hard to beat. Elyse Jennings Weddings planned and designed a La Tavola-decked out affair to remember, with Kim Starr Wise providing romantic fall florals. Marissa Lambert and Foto Buddy captured all the magic in the gallery here — trust us, this is not one to miss!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/127842321 600 338]

From Elyse Jennings Weddings… This bride and groom had a classic wedding with pops of muted colors! They share a love for Disney, so they incorporated a few subtle touches from the most magical place on Earth, like their escort cards as fast passes and tables named after their favorite rides! Their wedding also featured kisses in front of the New Orleans streetcar, whimsical lighting, lush organic flowers and a second line band to end the night! It truly was their happily ever after – New Orleans style!

From the Bride… From a young age, I have been enthralled with storybook romances, and couldn’t wait for the day I would meet my match. My dream came true during my first year of law school when I met Ron at a Valentine’s Day party. It was love at first sight, and five years later, Ron asked me to marry him on sunny spring day in a rose garden in Brooklyn.

There was no question in our minds that we wanted to get married in New Orleans. Not only is Ron’s family from there, but we felt that the city’s unique blend of fun-loving energy and timeless romance perfectly reflected who we are as a couple. City Park’s Botanical Garden and Pavilion of the Two Sisters was the first and only venue we visited. The glass encased Pavilion providing views of the beautifully manicured surrounding flowers and trees made for the perfect setting for our garden fairytale wedding!

We selected Elyse Jennings Weddings to help us plan our happy ending, and she and her team were integral in bringing our vision to life. We wanted our wedding to be both romantic and whimsical. We opted for a color palette of plum, blush, and gold, which we felt was appropriate for the time of year, but also captured the look and feel we were going for. Our invitations were sent to guests as a stacked package, which contained overlapping rustic magnolias and other enchanted patterns as well as a mix of formal and handwritten scripts. The package was finished with metallic gold baker’s twine and a custom monogrammed tag and mailed to guests in a gold glitter lined kraft envelope that was hand addressed in metallic plum ink.

We carried over this mix of formal and whimsy to our wedding reception as well. We opted for an outdoor cocktail hour in the Camelia Garden, which we adorned with festoon lighting, candles, and floating gardenias. Inside, guests found their seats at tables named after Disney rides – a nod to our fun-loving side. We dressed the tables in several different metallic neutral linens to provide the room with some added dimension and formality. The floral center pieces were a beautiful garden mix of roses, dahlias, tulips, hydrangeas, and greenery. Flowing garlands and hanging votives covered the lattices throughout the Pavilion, and fresh roses tumbled down the side of our tiered cake.

Because many of our guests were from out of town, we wanted them to experience a taste of New Orleans cuisine at our wedding, so provided several food stations containing local specialties such as jambalaya, crawfish etouffee, and shrimp and grits. After dancing the night away to music by the amazing Gina Brown and Anutha Level, we passed out beignets, and finished off the night with a traditional second line band. In lieu of sparklers, guests waved blush sequin wands that were hand-crafted by me and my mom.

Our wedding was truly the most magical night of our lives and a the perfect start to our happily ever after! We can’t say enough good things about Elyse Jennings Weddings, without whom our day would not have been so spectacular.

Romantic New Orleans Wedding at Race & Religious

I’ve got a huge crush on this wedding from Nicole Berrett Photography. Admittedly, I may be a little biased as so many of the sweet details of this day are similar to my very own wedding next month… gorgeous floor length Joanna August dresses, red-dotted florals (which were DIY!) and a beautiful venue, Race & Religious. It’s New Orleans charm at it best, lovelies.

From Nicole Berrett PhotographyThe bride, Jenny is originally from New Orleans! She really wanted to give her guests, especially her new husband and his family, a taste of New Orleans for the wedding!!

From The Bride… Ah! New Orleans – how I miss it. Hot and humid summers, giant live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, historic French quarter, Victorian homes with big wrap around porches. The food speaks for itself. All you have to do is taste it once. New Orleans isn’t just a place, but a unique and contained culture. I could continue endlessly. Although I grew up mostly in Texas, I am originally from New Orleans, and was fortunate enough to return for a time after college. The city holds a special place in my heart always, and is in my blood forever.

When Alex asked me to marry him, I found myself preparing to leave New Orleans for a farm in West Virginia. There was not much of a debate about wedding location. I had to marry the man that I love in the city that I love. In addition to New Orleans natives, many of our guests would be coming from out of town, namely West Virginia and Texas, and I wanted them to experience my family heritage before I started life in West Virginia. Whether they loved it or hated it, it was important that I shared my city and it’s culture. The wedding venue and menu needed to represent New Orleans through and through.

Just by chance, I selected my bridesmaid dresses before anything else in my wedding. The soft, airy color and the romantic style captured me instantly. I love the elegance of floor length gowns, as well as the practicality of my girls having their legs covered in early December. My sister helped me choose a blue for the house party gowns that would complement the bridesmaid hue.

I found my perfect reception venue at Race in Religious, a nineteenth-century Creole cottage. The guests would walk through rod iron gates into a beautiful courtyard, surrounded by walls built with bricks of Mississippi River clay, decorated with stained glass windows and gas lanterns. When we first walked through those gates, my mom described it as “very New Orleanian.” That was the goal.

In order to maintain a wedding budget, I wanted to use the talents of family and friends as resources. I was one of the crazy ones who didn’t use a wedding planner or a florist. With their help, my wedding came together quite nicely. It was a hectic but sweet time, working together toward a common goal, and I still feel so loved that these people would sacrifice their time and energy for Alex and me.

My sister, Cathy, got married in June, and my wedding came exactly six months later, in December. Having her go before me made things simpler, and meant that some choices were pre-made. For instance, we used the same fabulous photographer, who we love, and we also reused vases and centerpieces that Cathy had purchased and painted. She is the creative soul of the family, and helped me with everything. Together, we selected and ordered the flowers, and arranged them ourselves the Friday before the wedding. Her fingers deftly tied everything together, down to the tiniest detail. We hand selected the ribbon for my bouquet, as well as the leather for the boutonnieres, both Hobby Lobby purchases. She painted gold rims on some votives for the centerpieces, and TJ-Maxx goblets for smaller flowers. The main centerpieces were gold mercury glasses purchased on sale at West Elm, mixed with other parts of table settings, including pomegranates from Whole Foods. All these centerpieces and decorations were placed according to her design.

Above the dance floor, some friends hung strands of string lights, adding a picturesque touch. As party favors, my dad made homemade pralines, which my mom packaged in white paper, sealed with gold tape. Instead of a traditional guest book, I used a Louisiana plantation book, allowing my guests to sign whichever page they pleased. Now, I have a beautiful book for my coffee table, reminding me not only of the live oaks and plantations of New Orleans, but also of my wedding day. If ever I need encouragement while in West Virginia, I can flip through the pages, reading those handwritten words.

Thank you so much to all of my friends and family who made this day possible. To my parents, who probably could have killed their daughters getting married in the same year, you have always supported and loved us, teaching us to value our relationship with Christ as most precious. To my sister, thank you for always helping me figure out what to wear on a day-to-day basis up to planning my wedding day. I couldn’t have done it without you. To my cousins, who chose and performed the music for our wedding ceremony beautifully. To all who coordinated, set up, and tore down, to those who transported flowers, to those who provided food for the wedding party while we dressed, all the way to everyone who chose to spend their weekend with us in celebration. I love you all deeply and could never thank you enough. I am so blessed to have had so many good people in my life. I hope I make you proud in the Mountains of West Virginia. And to my sweet husband, thank you for loving me and supporting this emotional girl through these last 5.5 months of marriage. I can’t wait for the many years ahead.

As much as I emphasize New Orleans, I must say that more important than the New Orleans locale, the food, or the venue, was spending the day with my friends and family. They have all played integral roles in the story of God bringing two people together, the marriage of two best friends.

I loved the entire day. To pick one specific moment would be impossible. If I could give one piece of advice to other brides, I’d say just relax and enjoy it. Who cares if something goes wrong? That isn’t what your wedding day is about. If your veil falls off when you’re walking down the aisle, or if your flowers arrive in the wrong color, just laugh. Great people, eating great food, dancing the night away beneath string lights in a New Orleans courtyard – it could not have been better. As we say down in New Orleans “Laissez les bons temps rouler, let the good times roll”.

Traditionally Elegant Black Tie Wedding in New Orleans

A classic courtyard ceremony is no doubt chic, but add in a stunning lucite chuppah adorned with lush Kim Starr Wise blooms and you’ve got yourself one show-stopping affair. Planned in the hands of Sapphire Events this fete is overflowing with beauty. From the Bride’s beautiful Lazaro gown, to Melissa’s Fine Pastries atop Wildflower Linen, Greer G Photography has it all waiting for you, here!

From Sapphire EventsCynthia and Paul met through a mutual friend at The University of Florida and after a long game of “hard to get” played by Paul, the two quickly fell in love. They maintained a long distance relationship for 2 years until they finally were able to reunite in Los Angeles. Paul proposed to Cynthia at The Getty Museum overlooking the city at sunset. Soon after the proposal he whisked her off to dinner where she was surprised by her parents and her best friend who had flown in for the special day.

Cynthia is originally from New Orleans and wanted to throw an elegant black tie affair at the beautiful Ritz Carlton in downtown New Orleans. Cynthia has a very close knit family and her parents, Candy and Wally, were instrumental in the planning process. It often takes a village to plan a wedding and Cynthia and Paul’s wedding was no exception. Cynthia wanted a formal event while still throwing an over the top bash that The Big Easy is known for.

Cynthia and Paul were married in a classic courtyard under a stunning lucite chuppah adorned with white orchids and roses. The ceremony was heartfelt, both the bride and the groom had their parents stand by their side throughout their vows. As soon as Paul broke the traditional glass and their guests proclaimed “Mazel Tov” to the newlyweds the real party began.

Cynthia and her mother had a chance to walk into the grand ballroom while the guests enjoyed cocktail hour in the foyer. Both ladies gasped as they walked in and Candy said she felt she had just entered a magical secret garden. the Ritz Carlton Lafayette Ballroom was completely transformed with florals in ivory, beige and gold hues and romantic candlelight that emanated throughout the space.

The highlights of the night included a mash up father daughter dance that began with Celine Dion’s “Because you Loved Me” and ended hilariously with “Selfies” and a heartfelt toast from the father of the bride who was so happy he could barely contain his tears of joy. This was a wedding for the books! Mazel Tov to the Turbows!

Glamorous New Orleans Vow Renewal

Before embarking on a cross-country move from Florida to California, this lovely couple decided to start off their new beginning on the right note with an intimate vow renewal in New Orleans. With personal, heartfelt vows and a gorgeous setting, they pledged their love and commitment to each other once more. Take a peek at all the beautiful images shot by Matoli Keely Photography in the gallery (including exquisite baubles from the jeweler groom!).

Colors

From Matoli Keely PhotographyAnastasiia and Vadim are one of those hard to miss couples! Not only are they married, but they are also head over heels in love with each other; something that is evident the moment you meet them. It is undeniable that this couple is extraordinarily gorgeous and fashionable! Vadim wore a vintage velvet purple jacket with his slicked back hair and Anastasiia’s ethereal gold Marchesa Notte dress was perfectly accented with jewelry by Osta Jewelry. Did I mention her husband Vadim owns Osta Jewelry and creates each and every piece?

Married for 2 years, they were embarking on a cross-country move from Florida to California at the end of March, and along the way made a stop in New Orleans to exchange anniversary vows to each other as they began their new adventure on the West Coast.

They both wrote personal vows, which were elegantly transcribed by the talented Hiba Malik of Coffee & Pen Art, and exchanged them for the first time at the historic and breathtaking Marigny Opera House in the heart of New Orleans. Stammering with tears in between reading their vows, the significance of their love for each other was incredible to witness and document.

“ You make me want to be a better man in every way and I love that you make me feel this way.” ~ Vadim

“There are no words to describe how I feel when I’m with you. Thank you for showing to me what real love is, my life is so much richer because of you.” ~ Anastasiia

Glamorous New Orleans French Quarter Wedding

When you marry the fashionable NYC with New Orleans Big Easy, the results are without a glamorous. Case in point? This impeccable black tie affair snapped by Jacqueline Dallimore that is bursting with beauty. Graced with dramatic Kim Starr Wise florals, gorgeous Melissa’s Fine Pastries, and the mastery work of Laura Hooper Calligraphy it’s a gallery that you won’t want to miss!

From the Sapphire EventsNYC high fashion meets the Big Easy’s entertaining hospitality in this elegant affair! With Lauren’s impeccable sense of style and incredible taste paired with Robert’s charming Southern disposition, this recipe made for an incredible weekend of events to rival any royal wedding. Lauren donned an amazing Amsale gown and incredible cathedral length veil, and dressed her maids in Monique Lhuillier dresses for this black tie event at the French Quarter’s Old Ursuline Convent. A floral fountain created by Kim Starr Wise served as a stunning focal piece that escorted guests to their seats, and after dinner guests danced the night away under the twinkling lights of the decadently decorated tent. Moscow mules in copper mugs served as the signature cocktail as guests arrived at the reception.

From the beautiful Bride… So exciting! I’d say that our vision for the wedding design was for it to be classic and elegant. Florals were important in adding some dramatic touches (the runner and fountain) but other than that just a neutral palate with lots of candles making the tent glow was the goal. For the weekend as a whole our main objective was to bring our big families together and celebrate. We wanted this to be a family affair and we thought NOLA worked perfectly for that- gathering Robert’s family where a lot of them are from and introducing my family to the city. We also added some elements to make my family feel more at home- the Stromboli and cannoli cake! Another special element was being able to use some of the Crosby’s heirlooms (my bracelet and the cake table cloth).

Modern Melrose Mansion Wedding Inspiration

I’ve been craving a dose of modern goodness lately and this Melrose Mansion shoot from Sarah Beth Photography and Sapphire Events is just the ticket. The chic pink blooms from Bee’s Wedding & Event Floral Design pair stunningly with the sleek Amsale dress, while every details that follows fits perfectly in place… a gold striped cake from Melissa’s Fine Pastries, lucite chairs, top knot perfection—it’s all waiting right here.

From Sarah Beth PhotographyTaken at a one on one workshop with Marissa Lambert Photography, and with all of the amazing vendors in this shoot, it was destined to be amazing! We decided to stick with modern, clean and crisp inspirations for this shoot. When choosing a venue, Melrose Mansion was first on the list due to their elegant structure, along with their white walls and huge windows that let in so much natural light! Since we were going to be surrounded by so much white and light colors, we chose to add some color to the flowers to balance it all out.

Our models couldn’t have been a better fit either. Our ‘bride’ Erin Edmiston was actually Mrs. Louisiana. While our male model creates custom mens suites! Although the two only met on the day of the shoot, you wouldn’t be able to tell in the photos.

The stationery set by Heather Grimm may have been one of my favorite aspects about the shoot. The envelopes were black felt that gave an extra luxurious feeling to the set.

Romantic Downtown New Orleans Boudoir Inspiration

Nothing says utter romance more than ivory Chantilly lace, and this stunning boudoir shoot from Erika Parker Photography has plenty of it! Oh and that ring? Swoon! I’d pass on a diamond for a sapphire stunner like that any day. Ready for more? Lose yourself in all the pretty right here.

From Erika ParkerRace and Religious is a beautiful venue in downtown New Orleans. It has so much old world charm, I thought it would be the perfect place for a boudoir shoot. I collaborated with Lara from La Mintz who helped with the styling details, and the model, as well as with Destiny from Poppy and Mint Floral Company for a bouquet for the day.

We were really lucky, the day we decided to shoot was sunny and warm, and just a few hours after we were done, the temperature dropped into the 30’s! I wanted to take advantage of everything Race and Religious had to offer, the guest rooms inside are cozy, but with lots of character. Outside there is ivy, exposed brick and a pool — it’s beautiful! It was the perfect setting for an elegant boudoir shoot.

Romantic New Orleans Wedding Filled with Old World Charm

When it comes to modern glamour the results are guaranteed to be OMG-Gorgeous, but add in a beautiful Bride and her handsome groom? Well, it’s almost too good to be true. Stunning in every sense of the word, this perfect pair wed surrounded by wild bougainvillea, sparkling chandeliers, and endless love while Megan W Photography captured every single second of it, right here!

From the beautiful Bride… Since the venue already has so much old world charm and many eclectic treasures I didn’t want to takeaway from it’s natural beauty, but I also didn’t want to blend in by using anything rustic. In general, I’ve always loved the juxtaposition of old and new so this was what I was trying to create. A clean, modern look that was set in a weathered, antique space.

For the flower colors I was inspired by the bougainvilleas growing on the property. Growing up in Florida my mother and grandmother always grew these in a variety of colors and they are naturally just amazing.

Of all the decisions I struggled with the bridesmaids dresses the most and I think they turned out as one the best. I wanted them to feel great and reflect (literally) FUN, which is what we feel about NOLA. I tried on a million dresses for each of them, sent them pictures and they got to pick their favorite. This one was the clear winner!

My other favorite part (from a design perspective) was the linens and candles. Both of those vendors were so great to work with and the chandelier was awesome and achieved exactly what I wanted of old and new. I wish I could have enjoyed it more that night

Vintage Chic New Orleans Wedding at Race & Religious

I am aching to visit New Orleans and this wedding right here (and this stylish bride) captures why I’m so obsessed. Moody and romantic, rich in history and always ready to party, this wedding, like its host city, is full of personality. Anne-Claire Brun‘s photos are spilling over with this eclectic energy and until I’m able to escape to the Big Easy for a weekend, her pics are where I shall remain.

From Anne-Claire Brun… First, did you know that when you get married in New Orleans, they have this thing called “Second Line” at the end of it? It consists in having your entire wedding party and a band (a brass band) going out of the venue and around the block (so it’s basically a parade.) The bride and groom twirl an umbrella and a handkerchief in the air… And all the guests dancing and laughing while people walking by wave and congratulate the bride and groom…

The venue Race and Religious was incredible, so much character! And the girls (Brooke especially) from Southern Charm Weddings in Louisiana did a wonderful job.

I’m in love with the soft palette of colors for this wedding!

From the Bride… Nick and I met through mutual friends in the summer of 2002. I was 15 and had just finished my freshman year of high school and Nick had had just turned 18 and just graduated high school. We became friends and then started dating, although neither of our parents were thrilled at the time given the age difference. Little did we know then, that we would one day be engaged and getting married. We went our separate ways for a while in our early 20s, but always stayed in contact with one another and eventually moved in together in 2011.

One day, we were in California visiting my little brother who was doing an internship in LA. We decided to take a road trip up the coast along Route 1 to San Francisco and Napa Valley with a stop in Big Sur. We got to Big Sur just before sunset and Nick pulled to one of the viewpoints on the side of the road so that we could watch the sunset among the cliff. We could hear seals barking down below and the surroundings were just breathtakingly beautiful. I started to complain about it getting cold and wanting to head to our hotel for the night…that’s when Nick asked me to marry him (a few minutes earlier than planned, due to my whining…which I do regret now)!

For the planning process, we were lucky we had a great wedding coordinator, Brooke Casey of Southern Charm Weddings Louisiana, to help us. She made the planning process seem as seamless as possible. She also kept us on track with a timeline and reminded us of things we didn’t even think of that are in fact integral parts of the wedding planning process.

We had a destination wedding which we thought would make things easier, but wedding planning is never really easy as we now know. The fact that we did have a smaller list of attending guests did make some of the wedding planning tasks easier than if we had done a bigger ceremony and reception.

We went with a romantic, vintage New Orleans traditional theme. We really took the vibes of our venue, Race and Religious, as our inspiration. There is so much character to the venue that we decided it was best to let our wedding take cues from the venue’s eclectic charm rather than the other way around. I couldn’t have imagined a better backdrop for our day.

There were so many of my favorite moments that day it’s hard to say which one was best….

Having all my best girlfriends by my side keeping me from being a nervous wreck while getting ready was one… When Nick first saw me when I met him down the aisle… When we snuck away to a corner for private moment to just enjoy each other and eat some food… The father-daughter dance with my dad when he told me the emotional meaning for him behind the song we had picked , “In My Life” by The Beatles… Seeing all my closest friends and family having as amazing a night as we were, and last but not least, the Second Line band!

My advice for couples would be don’t stress the small stuff. Things will go wrong, they always do, but those are the things you won’t even remember the day of or they will be the things that make for a great story later on.

Also, don’t let anyone’s opinions or input influence what you want for your day. Always stick to your guns and initial ideas. At the end of the day, it should be you and your bride and groom’s personalities that shine through, no one else’s. And most importantly, at the reception, don’t forget to eat!

Nautical Elegance Wedding Inspiration

Real life isn’t perfect, things don’t always go as planned. But this shoot, captured by Graham Terhune, took lemons and made pitchers of lemonade. When bad weather hit, this shoot had to be rescheduled and squeezed in before flights departed from New Orleans, but with the talents of Sapphire Events, Wildflower Linens and Kim Starr Wise, the finished product is nothing but extraordinary. May these gorgeous pics be an example of never letting a little rain ruin the promise of pretty.

From Sapphire Events… The Anchored in Love photo shoot is a collection of images that we hope tells the story of a North Carolina girl who fell in love with a New Orleans gent. Their love story is simple and sweet, and their wedding is about their steadfast commitment to one another. On the day of the styled shoot, the sun was shining and the sky was clear until it was time to begin the photographs. At the exact moment we planned to begin shooting, the rain began to pour along with thunder and lightening. Although we were completely devastated (because we were scheduled to fly home from New Orleans the next morning) our team looked at one another and decided to make the best of our situation. We were able to take the portraits of our bride and groom along with the bridal party despite the spurts of sideways rain and we were able to schedule a reshoot of the details the next morning before our 10:30 am flight out of NOLA. As we drove to the airport, completely exhausted and slightly heartbroken, we couldn’t help but think of the beauty of our theme that enveloped our crazy circumstances. We were able to rearrange a few details in order to photograph the beautiful details created by Valerie; however, on actual wedding days, these arrangements are not to be altered. As we reflected on this during our drive to the airport we thought of the importance of anchors and how strong anchors are what make durable marriages. While the beauty that surrounds southern weddings is what we often think of their defining characteristic, during our photo shoot we realized that the beauty of southern weddings lies within the family traditions, the authentic details, the loyalty of friendships and most importantly the rock of solid relationships. Wedding days are beautiful and they mark the first day of the most important journey we embark on in this life and we are grateful for the reminder that it is the anchor of genuine love that holds us all together – rain or shine.

Elegant New Orleans Wedding

Classically elegant weddings make me swoon, especially when said wedding is a perfectly planned hometown affair by Sapphire Events. From the gorgeous Ivory And White Boutique clothed Bride, to the soft and pretty Kim Starr Wise blooms, every lovely detail snapped by Greer G Photography is positively radiant. A gallery as beautiful as this one is timeless beyond compare and can all be seen here.

From Sapphire EventsMargaret Anne and Kyle planned a destination wedding in Kyle’s Hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana. Margaret Anne is a classic beauty with classically elegant taste. She aimed for a minimalistic color palette with major “wow” factors for the reception.

The beautiful floor-to-ceiling-to-floor draping created a huge impact that amazed guests upon entering the reception venue, and the light and ethereal decor design contrasted beautifully against the hundred-years-old cypress pine beams and rustic elements of this warehouse space. Margaret Anne was the first to view the space as she arrived in her limo with Kyle, and she squealed when she saw the lights aglow. Sweet, simple, traditional, and decidedly Southern, this celebration exemplified everything Margaret Anne and Kyle had imagined for their big day!

Vintage Glam French Quarter Wedding

The best weddings are built on moments with meaning. Moments like the Bride’s cap veil handmade using her mother’s wedding gown, and modeled after her great grandmother’s veil from the 1920’s. Or the reception decor, including many pieces straight from the Bride and Groom’s own home. Pieced together, these details make for an unforgettable day captured by Catherine Guidry and Films By Dan.

From Catherine GuidryHeather and Matt are quite possibly one of the most talented couples I’ve met. They’re also wedding photographers so you can imagine how excited and honored I was when they contacted me to photograph their wedding! Not only are Heather and Matt completely smitten and so much fun to photograph but their details were also lovely, unique, and personal.

The Grimm wedding could be described as vintage, personal, and timeless. Heather told me “If Pottery Barn and the French Quarter had a baby….it would be their wedding style.”

As a photographer, lighting is HUGE. So, photographing other photographers was really a joy because I could see that this played a large part in their day…everything from where they got ready to how the string lights hung overhead at the Degas House. The feel was very comfy, cozy, and crazy cool; I literally could go on and on.

The centerpieces consisted of oversized lanterns: different shapes, sizes, and colors (Heather’s favorite). They brought a classic element to this French Quarter wedding. The color palette was peach, gold, and navy, and their mix-matched bridesmaids’ dresses were to die for.

I think the largest visual theme for their wedding was the DIY, personal feel. Almost all of the decor was from their homes. Heather also hand painted every sign, created the table/bar runners and designed the printed items and CD Favors. The photo booth props and signs were hand crafted and the marquee lights were created by the couple as well. Heather’s mom planted the mint favors from their garden and the backdrops and decor were all hand-made. The bride and groom table is their farm table from home…and even their wedding iinvitationswere designed by Heather and addressed by hand.

Her Juliet cap was made by her mom from her own wedding gown and modeled after Heather’s great-grandmother’s veil from the 1920′s. Matt’s favorite detail was their rings: Heather’s were created from her grandmother’s wedding rings!

Southern Romance Inspiration in New Orleans

I can’t pinpoint it, but there is something about New Orleans that enchants me, draws me in. It holds an allure, a seductive mystery that I can’t get enough of. This shoot captured that spirit and more, and just like the city it was shot in, I can’t look away. Designed by the talented 12th Table and shot by Marissa Lambert, the full gallery has me longing to visit this sultry city and discover some of its romance myself.

From 12th Table… Environment plays such a huge part in how gatherings should be designed. You should tap into the heartbeat of the city, the culture, the home, and really take cues from the beauty that already surrounds you. That’s what we tried to do here and really capture that spirit of New Orleans. Sultry. Adventurous. Bright. Booming. Full of life and character. The venue, Race and Religious, was the perfect backdrop. Just the right dose of history mixed with intrigue. It’s so easy to fall in love here.
