From the Photographer… This couple is SUPER in love and have known each other since they were kids! He was a family member of one of her best friends. They would see one another once in a blue moon but nothing ever came of it until their sophomore year of college. Fate happened when he was to take an internship in her hometown of Louisville. Chelsea said this about it “he would also be living with my best friends family during this time. My heart dropped to my stomach. Still to this day I’m unsure why I had that initial reaction, but I guess it ended up being quite significant.” It wasn’t much later when they connected via social media and became friends once he got to Louisville. ” Really, from that day on, our three years of dating began. In those three years, we went through many life changes. We were long distance for a year while we were both at college he moved to Louisville, he bought a house, and many more. So now, three years later, WE ARE MARRIED!”

From the Bride… The biggest inspiration for this wedding was the season of Fall. I LOVE the fall! Bryan & I have had some significant and sweet memories in the fall, and I’ve been in love with this season since I can remember. The season inspired our dessert bar – to serve home made pies. They all came from women who all are significant in some way to Bryan and I – we felt like this was a sweet way to include so many more people in our big day.

I always envisioned myself having my wedding reception in a barn. I dreamt of a simple, rustic, open space strung with many lights. Smith-Berry Winery encompassed every thing I wanted. Our ceremony was originally to be outside, looking onto the winery. Plan B came into play as October 5th ended up being a day for record rainfall – 8 inches to be exact. The barn turned out beautifully!

We both love a good Southern meal. Chuck Smith, owner of Smith-Berry, whips up a feast almost every weekend of the summer. Their property hosts concerts, and he is very well known for his food. People are said to come from surrounding cities just to eat!

Jaclyn Journey, our florist & local wedding stylist, made it easy to trust her to put together something I would love; she did not disappoint! My flowers may have been my favorite detail of the entire day. I loved the simplicity, yet vibrant colors of my bridesmaid’s bouquets and the way they made the navy dresses pop.

Advice for brides planning now: No matter the weather or any hiccups, this will still be the BEST day – you’re getting MARRIED!!

Fav Memories: seeing him for the first time & dancing with my siblings at the reception (somehow only ¾ got the good dancer gene, me not included)!

Amy Wallen Reed, the bride, is a very talented photographer here in Kentucky who had a beautiful vision for her day. We loved the colors, the reception details, and the details that graced her ceremony site.

This wedding combines grace and elegance while still keeping that rustic touch. We loved how she turned an open field into a beautiful backdrop for the ceremony. This wedding is really great inspiration for the brides who are putting on a rustic country wedding.

From the ladders, to the hanging frames and flowers to the dress and the groom’s style – this wedding is so well done and filled with inspiration

Opening a Clothing Boutique with Morton James Boutique

I think anyone that has a love affair with all things fashion has at one point, dreamed of opening their own store. A perfect little space that’s beautifully curated and lovingly designed. So today we’re picking the brain of Halie Rogers – the fashionista behind Morton James in Lexington with photos by Tiffany Mitchell – to see just what kind of chops it takes to open a store of your very own.

SMP: What inspired you to open a boutique of your own?

Halie: Having lived in Nashville for the past couple of years I fell in love with the city and all it had to offer. It is filled with lots of local, thriving businesses that really seem to define the essence of Nashville. Being immersed in that atmosphere really inspired me to become a part of Lexington’s evolving community.

SMP: Tell us about your career path before openings Morton James.

Halie: I’ve been focusing on raising my 6 year old son while also studying photography. I’ve always had an entrepreneur drive so once he got old enough I started planning a business that would satisfy my creative side while still allowing me the flexibility to be the mom that I strive to be.

SMP: Tell us a few things about retail that you perhaps weren’t prepared for when you were in the “dreaming” phase.

Halie: While I knew it was going to be a lot of dedication and work, I’m not sure I knew quite how time consuming and overwhelming it was going to be. The creative aspect of owning a boutique is what really drew me into the business, but perhaps I should have taken my dad’s advice and gotten a business or accounting degree first! ha!

SMP: How do you set yourself apart in your market?

Halie: Though it’s evolving, Lexington is still a traditional, Southern city and there are a lot of great boutiques that cater to that lifestyle. After visiting other cities across the US and living in Nashville, I saw a huge void in the fashion market here. I felt like we needed an edgier, boho, casual-chic boutique for men and women, that’s more aligned with today’s modern fashion. I feel like that vision alone sets us apart as we cater to a segment of the local market that really relates to our aesthetic.

SMP: Is having good taste when it comes to fashion enough to run a successful retail store?

Halie: To be honest, I thought so- but I was wrong! Having good taste helps since you have to design an inventory that attracts clients but there’s so much more that goes into running a retail store than just that. I’m lucky to have a great friend/manager/life-saver who has extensive retail experience that’s been here from the beginning to help with every aspect of running the business. She really helps balance the work load which is a huge stress relief and it doesn’t hurt to have a friend to go through all of this with!

SMP: How do you source your collections?

Halie: We did alot of research on the lines we wanted to carry- most of which were ones that were unheard of in Lexington. We visited lots of showrooms in NYC and also went to several markets in both Atlanta and New York. We are constantly on the lookout for new lines that we think will fit our style.

SMP: What are three trends your currently loving?

Halie: Sling back booties are sure to make even the simplest outfit look great, cream colored jeans as opposed to the typical white pant and lastly, a great fitting denim top.

SMP: Who is your favorite designer right now, right this moment?

Halie: That’s a tough one to narrow down! I’m currently loving both Raquel Allegra and Mara Hoffman. Raquel Allegra produces really chic and timeless clothing so I find myself wearing a lot of her tops for almost any occasion. Mara Hoffman, on the other hand, is a great go-to line when I’m in the mood to wear bold colors and patterns. Her spring and summer designs are to die for – I can’t wait to get them in!

SMP: If you had to choose one accessory to wear every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Halie: Probably a pair of Melanie Auld earrings. Her whole jewelry line is simple yet colorful and modern making them all easy to wear on a daily basis.

SMP: What are 5 staples to splurge on?

Halie: A good bag, an awesome leather jacket, a pair of booties, black skinny jeans and a well made white t-shirt. All are staples that you’ll wear time and time again- season after season.

SMP: What is THE color for 2014? THE must have piece?

Halie: Black is THE color for me always. You can never go wrong. I tend to buy neutral and then layer in with accessories and textures. I’m not sure I have a specific piece that everyone must get their hands on – but I do know sheer detail or lady-like lace are both going to be huge trends in 2014 along with lots of rose gold jewelry. I’ll definitely be sporting all of the above!

SMP: What does the next five years look like for Morton James?

Halie: We are really content with where we are and with the vision that we have established. We just want to work toward growing new relationships within the community and nurturing those that already exist. We want to stay true to our mission which is essentially to provide Lexington with clothing to fit our modern day lifestyle. Who knows though, maybe you’ll see Morton James pop up in another southern city! In the meantime, we are staying focused on growing our presence here in Lexington.

From the gorgeous bride… Like most brides, I had been planning my wedding since I was a little girl. My vision began with a colorful Lisa Frank inspired wedding and culminated into a beautiful rustic-chic affair. Even though I had abandoned my Lisa Frank ambitions, the little girl in me still desired a fairy-tale wedding, complete with tiara, and poofy dress. I had to have a poofy dress.

I wanted to feel like a princess.

After my engagement, I began the search for a venue. Initially, I had wanted to be married in my current city of Lexington, KY, right in the heart of horse-country. After searching high and low for the perfect venue, I happened upon the beautiful Coal Reserve in Somerset, KY, only an hour’s drive away. There was a nostalgic appeal as well, since Somerset is my hometown.

I visited The Coal Reserve and was sold. I was blown away by the breathtaking architecture. It was the sort of unique I was looking for.

Since I had been planning my wedding long before my engagement (oh yes, the eager girlfriend!…luckily he was okay with my need to plan), I already had a general idea of who I wanted to make my cake, photograph my wedding, and deejay. It wasn’t until I went to the How Charming Bridal show that I found my floral and event designer.

Vendors secured, I began working out the details. I scoured Pinterest. I liked blogs on Facebook. It was my mother who suggested Style Me Pretty. In fact, my wedding cake was inspired by a photo on this blog. Let me just say, it was stunning.

Inspiration in hand, I had a vision in mind. It was an overwhelming vision but this was THE day. This was the day I had been waiting for, the day I had been dreaming of. This was it. It had to be perfect.

My Matron of Honor and best friend is super-crafty, incredibly artistic, and just all-around talented. I had the vision, she helped me bring it to fruition. Together, we made twenty-eight tissue-paper pom poms and a burlap banner that said, “Mr & Mrs.” We crafted a sign for her son to carry that read, “Uncle Lee, Here She Comes.” Our most laughable endeavor was cutting yards upon yards of tulle for chair sashes. We devised a clever plan in a living room not quite equipped for cutting that much fabric. Operation Tulle Cutting was a success!

Her largest contribution to my big day, being my Matron of Honor aside, was making the dress for my flower girl, her daughter. I sent her several photos of what I liked about different flower girl dresses and described to her what I wanted and she made it! It was the most beautiful dress I had ever laid eyes on. And to have had such a personal touch in my wedding meant the world to me.

This wasn’t the only sentimental touch to my wedding. My husband’s nanny is a seamstress. She did all of my alterations flawlessly and happily. The single thing that will always hold a special place in my heart, however, is my veil. She made my cathedral-length veil. It was when I saw it in her living-room that I was brought to tears. I was going to be a princess and she had helped this happen. It’s a piece of my wedding that I’ll hold on to for posterity and cherish forever.

I poured my heart and soul into my wedding. The week before my wedding was the most stressful week of my life. I was happy, definitely, but my vision had to be perfect! I was watching the weather carefully and rain was being forecast for my outdoor wedding. I was disheartened. In an act of desperation, I posted a message on the local weather guy’s Facebook page (Bill Meck…he’s super awesome) about the forecast for September 21, 2013 in Somerset, KY. I was hoping for a different forecast. Much to my surprise, he responded. He wished me well but said it would be raining.

A not-as-pretty Plan B was devised for the inevitable rain. My fairy-tale wedding was falling apart before me. I told myself that ultimately, it didn’t matter, because I was marrying the love of my life and rain or no rain, this was the important thing. I started searching online for cute umbrellas.

A couple of days before the big day, weatherman Bill Meck commented on the post again. He said that there was a possibility the rain would clear up later in the day but he didn’t want to get my hopes up. I was left hoping.

We rehearsed both plans.

A few days before the wedding, my mother, mother-in-law, and family friend who also helped with day-of coordination, helped me set up at the venue. My mother-in-law ironed the burlap overlays I had purchased on Etsy. My mother and family friend tied fifty-six tulle sashes onto the gorgeous Chiavari chairs. They tediously wired twenty-eight tissue paper pom-poms to every other chair. My vision was being brought to life. I was overwhelmed with emotion.

They helped me tie the stamped circles I had done that said, “Thanks So Much” with the wedding date, to mason jar mugs for the favors.

While they worked on assembly, I wrote the menu on a chalkboard my mother had made from an old picture frame.

Several hours later, our hard work was showing results. I looked at the reception hall in awe. Every small detail had come together perfectly in a venue so appropriately suited for my big day.

The day before the wedding had arrived. I had made a schedule for myself the night before, after making a wire-hanger that read, “Mrs. Cook.” and printing the programs I had designed. This schedule was strict, as I still had much to do before the rehearsal. I still had to buy shoes for our special first dance. We had taken dance lessons and our dance had me twirling. I knew there was absolutely no way I could twirl in five inch heels. I opted for a shorter and wider heel.

I finally had the opportunity to relax while I was getting my nails done. The best part of this, however, was convincing my other half to get a manicure. Watching a man who has never been to a nail salon try to navigate his way around is a reward in and of itself. Perhaps more rewarding is knowing that he did it for me.

The time for the rehearsal had come and emotions were high. The mothers couldn’t stop crying.

The night of my wedding, I obsessively checked the weather online. The hourly forecast had rain ending around 4 pm. I was evermore hopeful, since my wedding was to start at 5:30 pm.

My happiest day had arrived, heralded in by rain and humidity. Makeup was applied, hair was curled, teased, and sprayed. Dresses were put on. My dress was a thirty-minute adventure between my mom, mother-in-law, and husband’s nanny. Luckily, it had been altered so I could step into it. My hair remained fabulous.

The rain stopped, the sun shined brightly. My outdoor wedding was going to happen!

The time had come for portraits of the bridal party. We headed outside for the first-time, for photos, and the cool breeze hit us. Not only had the sun come out but the temperature had dropped to the upper sixties. And it was clear. This was a clear unlike other days. The sky was a beautiful blue and the clouds were a vibrant white. I can remember this vividly as I was walking through the grass with my bridal party because it was the first time I had seen the altar assembled and the chairs put out for the ceremony. I remember how HAPPY I was because everything was so perfect.

After our photos, the guys had their turn. All that was left was waiting; waiting to make my walk down the aisle to my dapper man.

Thirty minutes before the ceremony, I had to be stowed away upstairs so no one could see me. The caterer came up to me and asked me what my husband would be having to drink at the reception. I became emotional because it was the first time someone had referred to my groom as, “your husband.”

My mom soon joined me upstairs. She desperately wanted to give me my something borrowed but we were short on time and I told her not to worry about it. She was insistent. She pulled out of her purse her wedding band tied to a pretty pink ribbon. She began to cry. She told me that her wedding band symbolized so much to her and was so very precious to her and that she very much wanted me to have it as I walked down the aisle and made the same promises she made so many years ago. She told me how good my father had been to her. I had to look away from her in an effort to keep from crying. She tied the ribbon on my left wrist.

I was a mess of nerves. We opted not to do a reveal so I hadn’t seen my groom since the night before. I needed him desperately. It was almost time but the wait seemed like forever. The moments right before my walk down the aisle were surreal. It was a feeling I can’t quite describe. Everything was happening so fast yet so slowly. I can remember panicking and my brother-in-law came up to me. He didn’t say a word. He just held my hand in a silent attempt to calm me. His gesture was heartfelt and one I’ll always hold dear to my heart.

I can remember my father’s expression when he saw me for the first time, as he was preparing himself to walk me down the aisle. My dad doesn’t outwardly express how he feels often. I could tell this was going to be an emotional day for him. He didn’t say it but I knew he thought I looked beautiful. That was all I needed.

Everyone had made their walk down the aisle and were in their places. The doors were closed. It was my turn.

The doors opened and I saw everyone. I was nervous. My father tells that he felt my weight shift a bit on him. I wonder if this is the real reason brides are walked down the aisle by their fathers; support until the day he gives her away.

Then I saw him. I saw my groom and immediately, I was calm. He won’t admit it, but there were tears in his eyes. His composure was definitely affected. I was his princess.

My father kissed me on the cheek and shook my groom’s hand and gave me away. My groom held my shaky hands and mouthed that he loved me.

The ceremony commenced smoothly and beautifully. The scenery was beautiful, the altar was exactly as I had envisioned. The violinist didn’t miss a note and our nearest and dearest were there to witness our vows, to support our journey as husband and wife.

I was happy. I am happy.

We were pronounced husband and wife and I grabbed my groom’s bald head and kissed him! We walked happily down the aisle.

The reception was just as fabulous. We love eighties music and chose, “I’ve Had The Time of My Life” as our song. We did an easier version of the Dirty Dancing dance. He twirled me like a princess.

When I turned sixteen, my father wrote in my birthday card, “but whatever road you choose, I’m right behind you, win or lose.” I can remember being moved to tears by this and ever since, Rod Stewart’s “Forever Young” has held a very special place in my heart. This is why I chose it for the dance with my father.

I didn’t expect to get emotional during the dance. I did well until this lyric played. I broke down. I mean, I really broke down. It was in that moment that I knew I wasn’t his anymore. It was in that moment that I thought about everything that he had done for me, to support me, all the way up to walking me down the aisle.

My groom’s dance with his mother was just as emotional. She was so happy and so proud of her baby. He chose Celine Dion’s “Because You Loved Me” for their song. He had definitely gotten to his mom’s heart with that song. He twirled her, too, though, and she smiled.

The Best Man and Matron of Honor gave their touching speeches. The Best Man surprised me. As the brother of my groom, we had often disagreed and sometimes argued, but on that day, I saw how he truly felt about me. He had had something written down but then opted to speak without it. He first told a story about his little brother, my groom. It was what came next that surprised me. He explained to the audience how I had stuck by my groom’s side through his back injury and surgery, and how my support never faltered. He got choked up. It was then that I realized that he understood just how much I loved his brother. It was then that I realized I had his approval. He knew that I would uphold my vow to love and cherish his little brother, in sickness and in health.

My Matron of Honor is my best friend but she was my groom’s best friend first, then I stole her away. This made her speech so very special. She said wonderful things about both of us and said it was a perfect day that her two best friends would marry one another.

We cut our gorgeous cake. We drank our sparkling cider. We said our thank yous. We danced some more.

At midnight, we had one last dance to “Everything I Do” by Bryan Adams. We had often danced in our living room to this song.

My wedding and reception were beautiful. All of my planning, all of the hard work, the exceptional vendors I had hired, all of it, had paid off and the results were stunning. More than that though, it was the sentimental things that I’ll never, ever forget. My veil, the speeches, my first dance, my emotional dance with my father, my groom’s love for me…these are the happiest parts of my life.

During the reception, I had stepped outside to take a break from dancing. My father was outside and he pointed out to me a dove nested under the roof of the venue. He said it was a good sign.

I got to be a princess and my wedding day was as magical as a fairy-tale.

Lexington, Kentucky Wedding from Nina Mullins Photography

Every wedding starts with a love story. A classic boy-meets-girl kind-of moment that changes absolutely everything. And this particular love story all started with a visit to South Africa–her family on a safari and him being their guide. It’s the kind of chance meeting that’s so very magical, it deserves a wedding equally as special. Nina Mullins caught every moment of this happily-ever-after, and there’s even more in the full gallery right here.

From Always PlannedOur goal was to create an event that not only was a celebration of the bride and groom’s unique background, but to also invite each guest to share in their love story. The love story of how they met and fell in love while in South Africa – her family on an African Safari and him being their guide, as a professional hunter. The mix of personalities and styles proved to be a unique blend that is both glamorous and masculine at the same time.

Custom signage directs guests to the beautiful outdoor ceremony area. Surrounded by trees, the front lawn of the beautiful La Belle House at the Headley-Whitney Museum is the perfect location for the 200 guests to witness the wedding ceremony. Natural wood folding chairs keep with our rustic theme and by keeping the Alter Showpiece all white, our couple and their bridal party take center stage. Oversized rustic pillars, blanketed in all white and finished off with fresh floral hanging baskets, make this alter showpiece extravagant yet natural and rustic, thus keeping with our overall theme.

At the ceremony we combined his love for the outdoors with her love of flowers and finer elements. The rustic color of the natural wooden guest chairs, paired nicely with the more ornate gold shimmer fan programs. Blending Kentucky and South Africa could prove challenging, that is unless you have access to a steel drum band. The cocktail hour is held in the beautiful gardens and lawn of the Headley-Whitney Museum. Hi-top Cocktail tables adorned in LaTavola Dupoinique Iridesence linen in Brass color and topped off with unique floral arrangements, consisting of gorgeous purple hydrangea, garden roses, kale cabbage, stock and curly willow. Guests are greeted with the signature cocktail of Low Country Lemonade. A large oversized chalkboard has the menu of passed appetizers – Chilled Strawberry Soup Shooters, Weisenberger Mill Stone Ground Chedder Grit Cake with BBQ Shrimp and Mini Hot Brown Puffs.

Bourbon Tasting Lounge: Being from Kentucky definitely has advantages and one of those is Bourbon. We began with a 60×90 white pole tent, embellished with a white ceiling treatment and set with mood lighting. Complete with chic modern seating arrangements, rustic elements of wooden side tables and bourbon barrel cocktail tables. The area was completed with lanterns, fresh floral arrangements, antlers, a bourbon bar and cigars. To add to the overall guest experience, each guest was invited to learn the history of our Kentucky Bourbon’s and enjoy a sample as a Bourbon Expert from the Bourbon Review Magazine educated guests at the bourbon bar.

Reception Tent: Lining the pathway to the 60×120 Hi-Peak reception tent are beautiful rustic brown lanterns on shepherd hooks. Guests enter the large white tent and are surprised with antler chandeliers completed with amber colored crystals to add a splash of elegance to the rustic element. Windowpanes direct guests to their table, as a 24’ custom round bar welcomes guests to enjoy drinks all night long.

Guest tables are adorned with the stunning LaTavola Isabella Orchid linen and a series of 3 different floral centerpieces, some with antlers encased in glass domes add a touch of whimsy and dimension to the tent. A large 24’ custom round bar adds a sense of elegance, while additional cocktail tables add space for guests to mix and mingle. Each guest table is finished off with gold mercury glass votives, ivory silk napkins, gold shimmer menu cards and a glittery bon bon from Bedazzle my Bonbon’s at each place setting.

Lighting is an important element to our overall design and the reception tent is no exception. Each guest table has a pin spotlight as the wedding cake, groom’s cake and the bar become focal points with attention grabbing lights. After dinner, the live bank kicks off and our lighting instantly changed to a starry night gobo covering the entire top of the tent, washing the evening in a gorgeous hue and setting the tone for a night of endless excitement.

Louisville Wedding from Photography by Melanie Mauer

I grew up loving Sabrina and wishing I could climb up into a tree and watch beautiful parties every Saturday night, but this bride got the real deal. She grew up behind this gorgeous mansion, which obviously meant she opened her bedroom windows to listen to the music coming from the grounds all wedding season long. The only thing more romantic than that is the grown up girl’s wedding, captured beautifully by Melanie Mauer. It took place on the grounds she grew up loving, and the gallery is almost like a peek from her window into the big day. Click here to see it all!

From the beautiful bride … I met Brent four years ago, when we were both living in San Diego, CA, at a Valentine’s Day party for all our single friends. I was immediately drawn to him, not only because Brent is always the tallest guy in the room (he’s 6’7″!) but because of his energy and free spirit, he just knows how to make people smile! We became fast friends after that night and after a month or so we decided to finally go out on a date, and we have been together ever since! A few years later we were living in Manhattan Beach, CA, and Brent proposed to me on the beach by our apartment on a perfect sunset summer evening!

Picking our wedding venue was a no brainer. Growing up in Louisville, KY, I have always loved the beauty and history of the state, and Brent, who grew up in Southern California, very quickly fell in love with Kentucky as well… so he insisted we get married in my hometown! Well, it just so happens that my parent’s home is located directly behind Whitehall, a gorgeous historic home in the older part of Louisville. When I was younger I used to open my bedroom windows so I could listen to the bands play at the weddings at Whitehall. So needless to say we just HAD to get married there!!

I knew I wanted the style of our wedding to be garden-chic, with a color palette of greens and ivory that allowed the natural beauty of Whitehall’s colorful gardens to be showcased. My amazing mom, with the help of our wedding planner, Carol, and some outstanding vendors in Louisville, made all my ideas come to life! We were able to transform our ceremony site and reception tent into a work of art! We also wanted to make sure all of our out of town guests had a true Kentucky experience so we had a bluegrass band play during our ceremony and cocktail hour, had guests sign a bourbon barrel lid instead of a traditional guest book, and of course kept the bourbon flowing all night!

Our entire day was filled with so much love and was extremely personal. I lost my maternal grandparents when I was younger, so I made sure they were there in spirit by wearing my grandmother’s ring and carried a fun gold purse that she had at her own wedding. We also used the cake knife that those grandparents used at their wedding, which has their wedding date, along with my parents and aunts and uncles, carved into it. Brent and I were also blessed to each have a set of Grandparents present at the wedding, each having been married over 60 years! (My 90 year old grandpa even cut in during my father-daughter dance!) My brother has a beautiful voice, so we were honored to have him sing an acapella version of “Till There Was You” during our ceremony. It also meant so much to me that we were able to utilize my parent’s gorgeous home for the groomsmen’s wedding prep and for our after party. As beautiful as everything was, it was those personal touches that made the day unforgettable!

Kentucky Plantation Wedding from 31 Films

It’s a heartwarming kind of Saturday morning. The wedding on hand is the kind that warms your very soul, thanks to the extreme love and affection between the two lovebirds. And it doesn’t hurt that 31 Films was on hand to capture every wink, every smile, every butterfly. This is the reason I look forward to Saturday mornings. This kind of love.

From the lovely bride … Our family and friends and all of the vendors helped to make our wedding day the perfect day.  Our venue was the dream spot for us to get married because it was a southern, romantic plantation house that served comfort food and had gorgeous scenery.  There were so many aspects about the day that were so special to me.

Allure Bridals blessed us with attire for our whole wedding party as well as with a videography package from the ever so talented 31 Films.  Caleb’s groom cake was made up of Oreo’s (his favorite cookie), and our candy bar contained all of our favorite candies.  Every detail of the wedding described our relationship, and us as individuals. The flower girl wore a hot pink tutu and the ring bearers wore lime green bow ties and suspenders.  Caleb wore lime green polka dotted socks, and I wore hot pink, sparkly shoes that Caleb proposed to me with!  My ‘something old’ was a little white brooch that every women on my mom’s side of the family wore when they got married, and my ‘something blue’ was blue thread of our wedding date that my mother sewed into the lining of my wedding dress.

I prayed and prayed for good weather, and would you believe that it was sunny with a slight breeze during our outdoor ceremony?  I can’t even describe to you how perfectly everything fell into place.  I was so thankful for all of our family and friends that traveled to see us get married.  The icing on the cake was receiving our video from 31 Films.  I still cry when watching it, even after six months of marriage!

Lexington, Kentucky Wedding from Momental Designs

Weddings were made to be draped in dreamy white florals if we do say so ourselves. And by draped, we mean covering every single inch of this pretty affair captured by Angela Anderson Photography. Dripping from the chairs lining the aisles of the ceremony all the way to the hydrangea and moss table runners, the amount of lush blooms is beyond. Another lovely addition to this occasion was Momental designs, who managed to set the tone of the whole wedding with their hand painted invites and elegant signage. As you peruse the gallery, note how this couple’s vision is in every last stunning detail.

From the Bride… I like to think I’m a creative person with an artistic streak, so I drew and designed our save-the-dates. Although family and friends were nice enough to tell me how cute they were, I knew I should keep my day job and leave it to the professionals. We knew we wanted something out of the ordinary for our stationary, but didn’t know exactly what. So in our hunt for the perfect invitations, with the help of our wedding planner, we found Momental Designs! We immediately knew they were the stationary designer for us because everything is hand-painted and one of a kind! How can you get any more unique than that! Our invitations were very intricate with hand-painted flowers, lace cut-out bands and a monogram. They were elegant yet whimsical, which was exactly the mood we wanted to portray of our wedding.

Our theme of “vintage elegance with a bit a of whimsy” continued in our chalkboard inspired seating chart with fonts that brought a vintage feel, whimsically painted table numbers on clear acrylics, and menus banded with lace cut-outs. As part of the favors, we gave our guests a CD of songs we listened to on our first date, which was a southern meal prepared by Daniel (got to love a man that cooks!). Momental Designs designed the CD sleeves with our names and a caption that read “Music to Eat Chicken Cordon Bleu to” in vintage fonts. What a wonderful job capturing our wedding theme and us as a couple in our stationary!

Like a lot of brides, one of my favorite moments from our wedding day was seeing Daniel for our “first look.” I felt so much love and happiness in that moment that I broke out in tears. However, my #1 favorite moment from that day didn’t involve the groom at all. My favorite moment was when my dad gave the welcoming speech. He didn’t say much and he spoke in broken English, but he touched every heart in the room. My dad, who was always stern and serious and who I knew for sure would not be emotional on my wedding day, choked up and was trying to hold back his tears and emotions. After a long pause, he gave up and started crying. I can’t explain how much love I felt at that moment and I finally felt like I understood the man behind the stern exterior.

If I can have a do-over in life, I would be a wedding planner. I just love everything wedding-related! So of course I enjoyed most aspects of wedding planning, except the logistics and budget (which wedding planners probably have to deal with most, so maybe I wouldn’t be a great planner). What I enjoyed most was designing floral arrangements. I knew I wanted flowers galore for the reception with magical floral trees reminiscent of Preston Bailey’s designs, and table runners made of flowers, moss and candles. It was amazing to see the floral design team at Lauren Chitwood Events bring my vision to life. They made it even more beautiful than what I had imagined, and it was absolutely breath-taking!

Wine & Cheese Wedding Shoot from Nina Mullins Photography

A sure fire way to my heart is wine and cheese. As in, I’m THAT girl at the party hovering over the delicious cheese platter, only coming up for air when I need a sip of wine. And THAT girl is loving this shoot that’s bringing the idea of a cozy, intimate wedding and marrying it with heart-happy details that end in a little bonfire and marshmallow roasting. Photographed by Nina Mullins who collaborated with Magnolia Floral Design, Cara Dee PhotographySuzi Hjorth and be you, bisous! to create a spread worthy of pinning and favoriting, this is also worthy of a long perusal in the gallery. Your cheese loving heart will thank you.

From Nina Mullins PhotographyAs I snuggled up close to my husband on our couch one night, I also snuggled up to my toasted baguette and brie. It was in that moment, as I considered my extreme love of cheese, that I thought, “Wouldn’t a wine & cheese wedding be the best?!” And why not add a touch of masculinity to that wedding, with some really good bourbon. And so was born our, Wine, Cheese, & Bourbon wedding. I knew immediately that I wanted the setting of our styled shoot to have a natural backdrop, so we decided to set up all the elements of this beautiful rustic wedding down in a dried creek bed, surrounded by palisades, just as the last of the Autumn leaves had fallen.

The table was spread with an array of delicious cheeses from a local cheese shoppe here in Kentucky. To compliment the cheeses, we added a variety fruits, crackers and breads. The surrounding trees were used to hang the bride’s vintage fur coats, as it was an extremely chilly Autumn afternoon. She wore a gorgeous Jenny Yoo dress, and wore hand-crafted silver jewelry, from Savane Silver. Before the Bride got dressed, we hung the wedding gown on a leafless branch, on which we tied strips of fabric, to create a simple backdrop for the gown. The wedding favors were made up of two panes of glass, with a beautiful fall leaf pressed between them. Guests can take a memory of the wedding , as well as a small piece of Autumn, home with them, after all the wedding festivities have ended. The cake is a simple yet classic creation, adorned with all-natural elements, including fruit and lavender.

And after all the elements at the reception table have been served and consumed, we thought we’d add a touch of childhood nostalgia by having a small bonfire, where the bride and groom roasted marshmallows and baked bread on a stick. The evening ended with just the bride and groom sitting by the fire, keeping each other warm, as they stole a kiss or two as the evening light faded. The creek bed began to fill, just as our shoot ended, sealing a beautifully perfect styled wedding shoot.

From Suzi Hjorth of Magnolia Floral DesignWe wanted the look to feel completely at home in our very natural setting. Herbs were used to add earthy scents, flowers were cut fresh from the garden, we went so far as to pull off to the side of the road when we saw a patch of dried Thistle and Foxtail blowing in the wind. Even the torn silk used for fastening the bouquet and boutonniere were remnants from a wedding gown which just seemed to fit with the mood of the whole day. The Bride’s bouquet is an informal gathering of Roses, Mums, Dahlias and Hypericum berry–given a decidedly organic look by adding herbs such as Rosemary, Thyme, soft silvers with Lambs Ear and Dusty Miller and wispy Willow Corn, Foxtail and Angel Vine to trail. The bouquet is fastened with bands of torn raw silk shantung. The groom’s boutonniere echoes the brides bouquet with Hypericum berries, willow corn and lambs ear and the addition of a little native plant with tiny pink blooms called Ladies Thumb. For the centerpiece a few more surprise additions–dried thistle and blooming cotton, along with pears nestled in a bed of sheet moss–because the whole thing should look good enough to eat!

From the Bride… Jason and I met five years ago when we started working together, and three months later we were dating. He surprised me with a Memorial Day weekend trip to Destin, Florida, on our three year anniversary and proposed. I was completely surprised — it was so beautiful, out on the end of the pier in the middle of the ocean, with him on one knee with a beautiful ring. I started planning immediately. I was really inspired by the weddings on Style Me Pretty — they matched our style. We wanted a wedding that was fun and casual, with an organic, vintage, homemade feel. I wanted to do as many DIY projects as possible — I don’t think there’s any better way to make you’re wedding so personal! My mom and I set out to make fabric birds for the centerpieces, a pennant banner with over 300 flags, over 200 heart-shaped cookies and 200 sheet music cones. My dad cut all the wood pieces for the centerpieces and desert table, and my parents made the arbor we stood in front of for the ceremony out of willow branches.  We borrowed cake plates and platters from family members for all the desserts, and for a homemade look, we had the cakes dirty iced with amazing butter cream. All the cakes were different flavors, along with Jason’s Maryland Terrapins cake. I wanted an organic feel, so we put flowers that looked like they’d just been picked in Jason’s mom’s mason jars. I couldn’t have imagined anything better. With a friend singing and playing songs during the ceremony along with a violinist and cellist, the ceremony was officiated by my uncle. We wrote our owns vows, along with traditional vows and it was the best thing we could’ve done — they were sweet, lighthearted and heartfelt. One of my favorite things was having my grandfather’s rings tied into my bouquet and my great-grandfather’s favorite flowers, gladiolas, everywhere because he had recently passed away. Our wedding day couldn’t have been more special. Stephanie captured every amazing moment, and every time I look at our pictures I relive the day, the emotions I felt, and all the excitement leading up to it, which only makes me more excited about spending the rest of my life with my best friend by my side.

Right before the wedding, my aunt began playing “Doe a Deer…” from the Sound of Music on the piano and all of us girls broke out into song, dancing around, drinking and having the best time. There was never a minute of stress – it was a constant party.

I loved seeing Brandon all dressed up on our wedding day. The way we staged the first look had the perfect amount of anticipation. Sitting in my carriage hearing the call to post was such a unique and old-world moment. I remember thinking how I wish I could clone myself to see everyone’s reaction.

Listening to Brandon’s vows still give me the chills because they were so honest and loving. Nothing can surpass our first kiss as husband and wife and hearing the two simplest words: “I Do”.

From Melanie of  Photography by Melanie MauerElizabeth Lary and Steve Kirsch were married this fall on the Glen Lary estate here in Lexington. The estate itself has been in their family for generations and was the perfect thing to bring the couple to Kentucky for their wedding. They are from Los Angeles (Manhattan Beach) but planned a glamorous country wedding here in the Bluegrass to enjoy being surrounded by friends and family. Elizabeth is charismatic and extraordinarily talented! The groom is her perfect compliment, calm, level headed and subtle. The couple are now back in LA, but soon to transfer to NYC.

From the bride… From the first time I first set foot on the grounds of our family home, I knew that this would be the ONLY place in the world that I would ever get married. Steve and I met in Miami, Florida fresh out of college and have spent almost every day together since. After a stint in Germany, New York and a cross country move to California, he proposed after we got home from a magical Michael Bublé concert. Down on one knee, with our house full of roses, my favorite champagne and our dogs. Nothing could have been more magical. Being a corporate event planner by trade, planning my own wedding seemed to fall right into place. I already had the perfect venue and the perfect groom, which made the rest easy. Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a hopeless romantic who lives my life vicariously through fairy tales and romantic comedies. That being said, I knew that our wedding would have to encompass all of the above. From our “Father of the Bride”/”The Notebook” style venue to the twinkling lights above our heads, a band that was to die for and a groom that stood by my side throughout the entire process, it was the most magical night of our lives. Friends and family flew into the Blue Grass state from all around the country to celebrate our magical weekend. Horse racing at Keeneland, bourbon tasting and a wedding at our family home tied everything together into the perfect Kentucky weekend. All of our Lexington vendors and friends that we met through the planning process went above and beyond the call of duty to help out a California bride with her dream wedding. All invitations and printed materials were designed by a wonderful friend and assembled over nights of wine and laughter. Gift baskets were from the heart and wedding favors tied into our family history. All in all, our wedding was my piece de resistance and a weekend that hopefully no one will ever forget.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/30990025 601 338]

Marty and Kristina met over a decade ago when they were in high school through mutual friends. They met at an event called “Rock the Water Tower,” a fall music festival in Louisville. That was fitting because they have gone on to see over 100 concerts together since they met. Marty went to an all boy’s catholic school & Kristina was at an all girls academy. They instantly became friends and spent every bit a free time together that their parents would allow. They spent most of their “dates” playing video games with friends and at the gym working out. Marty & Kristina both spent a year at the University of Kentucky after high school where Kristina was on the dance team. They quickly discovered that the new city was not for them and moved back home to attend the University of Louisville. Kristina & Marty graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor’s in Nursing & Marketing respectively. Kristina went on to work as a nurse in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at a local children’s hospital and Marty attended the University of Louisville’s law school. Marty is now Assistant prosecutor for the County Attorney in Louisville.

Oddly enough, they never talked about getting married, or engagement rings, it was always understood that they would be together though. Marty popped the question on his mom’s birthday, their nine year anniversary, as a surprise to both of them. And boy was it! Kristina’s mom snapped the perfect picture as Kristina said, “YES”. Kristina’s whole family was there for the big moment and the rest is history.

Marty gave Kristina a gum ball machine ring he found in the junk drawer at his parents’ house, that we later found to glow in the dark. He figured he’d let her choose for herself what she would be wearing for the rest of her life. Kristina wore the hideous pink, glittery, glow in the dark ring proudly until she got the real thing. Now the ring resides in a shadow box in front of the photo captured by Kristina’s mom. They knew they wanted the wedding to be a family affair, so they incorporated as many family members as possible in the ceremony.

They were both raised catholic, so the wedding took place at St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Louisville, where Kristina went to grade school. Marty’s uncle was the priest, his aunts were the cantors, both of their living grandmothers were lectors, his second cousins were the flower girl and ring bearer, and the bride and groom’s sisters were bridesmaids.

The Wedding ceremony was a modern twist on the catholic prayer service. The couple wrote their own vows and included a poem about the hands of the husband and wife and all they will do for another in the future. Their program included a “wedding map”, which mapped out placed in the city where they met, got engaged, where the ceremony, reception, and hotel was located. The program also included a list of 25 things the couple wants to accomplish before their 25th wedding anniversary, and a horoscope that went with the “earthy” theme, entitled, which Tree did you fall from?.

The bride has always enjoyed crafts, so she decided that she would coordinate, design, and organize the whole event on her own. She was obsessed with bridal inspiration websites throughout the engagement and handmade every decoration used at the wedding and reception with the help of her lovely bridesmaids. The décor was fall themed – earthy, and vintage all in one. Music has always been a huge part of their lives together, so they had a string quartet, harp, and trumpet at the ceremony, which sounded beautiful in the old church.

Upon arrival to the reception, guests found their place cards which were rocks with their names on them. The tables were named after concerts that Marty & Kristina had been to. While the guests waited on the bridal party to arrive, they made themselves busy with the photo booth, and the local art work at the reception site. Kristina painted a bare tree on four separate canvases, and had ink placed next to each one that corresponded to the seasons. Guests used the ink to make thumb prints on the canvas. After the wedding Marty & Kristina were left with four beautiful pieces of art for their home.

Kristina collected wedding photos from parents, grandparents, great grand parents, and even beyond that for a memory table that doubled as a family tree.

On the head table, Kristina made frames for each of the bridal party members with a short biography in them for their place cards. The night was filled with dancing. One of the groomsmen did a Michael Jackson tribute including props. The limbo stick made an appearance, and during one of the DJ sets, glow sticks were handed out to “light” up the dance floor. Overall, the night was full of love, happiness, and just plain fun. A night that no one in attendance will soon forget!

From the Bride…Zach and I were high school sweethearts and on the day we wed, we had been together for over 6 years. As far as the wedding goes, I’m not even sure where to begin. I remember every thing, every detail as complete perfection. Almost the moment after Zach proposed I began my search for the perfect venue. I had a distinct vision in my head of “simplistic beauty”. I wanted to be married outdoors, I knew that detail was for sure! After a lot of searching my mom found this lovely place located in Prospect (about 15 minutes outside of Louisville) called Gingerwoods. It was a newer, mostly unheard of venue located on a windy road lined with trees and fantastic views of grazing horses every direction you looked. It had been a church at one time, and when the church moved elsewhere, someone bought Gingerwoods and “re-touched” a few details, but they were still sure to leave loads loads of charm.

As that detail was crossed off the list it was time to think about decor. I was so afraid my simplistic touch and small budget may be mistaken for unfinished, and that is when I remembered a distant friend of mine had just started a small design company. I asked if she would be willing and she dove right in! Believe me when I tell you, she did everything! I call her my fairy god mother because she made my dream a reality. She did complete design of the reception flowers, our bouquets and boutonnieres, she even did the arch we were married under (which she surprised me with on the day of). We were inspired by table numbers that we had seen on SMP months before and even did a DIY project of our own to re-create!

After all of these details were put together, the day finally arrived. I had never seen the sky so blue or so crisp, it was a perfect day for our wedding! One of the most special things about that day was getting ready at the salon I work at, surrounded by all my co-workers that I know and love. They surprised me with mimosas and took such great care of me, being with them for that portion of the day was truly special. Once 6 o’clock arrived it was time to marry my best friend, we were surrounded by only our closest friends and family. After our ceremony, guests were escorted up to a tented deck for cocktail hour while Zach and I took pictures. Right before it was time to head into the reception, a video played of Zach and I through the years, after that was played, we were announced in. This by far, was the best moment of the night. People stood and clapped, some even with happy tears, and welcomed us in. We had never felt so much love in one room!

Madisonville Wedding by Stephanie Reeder Photography

Morning glories! What a lovely morning it is! That’s right, it’s Wednesday aka the day we overload your inspiration folders with snippets of seven weddings. Seven weddings all in one day…sounds glorious right? To fit it all in we can only show a snapshot, but have no fear the galleries are full of all of the greatness!

Speaking of all things glorious and great – this backyard beauty by Stephanie Reeder Photography is all that and then some! Its southern vintage at its finest and adorable to boot. It’s also safe to say when you put cutie patootie ring bearers in bow ties I let out a squeal or two, and that most certainty happened when I saw this southern soiree. There is so much more to squeal about in the full gallery of images – so be sure to check it out!

From the Bride…Sam and I met five years ago in our hometown of Madisonville, Kentucky. There was an instant connection between the two of us and as crazy as it seemed I knew I wanted to marry him. Once Sam and I got engaged, I immediately started planning. We debated a destination wedding, but when we previewed Ruby Lodge we knew that we wanted to tie the knot in our hometown.

After buying tons of magazines, looking through blogs, etc. I was drawn to the southern vintage themed weddings. Once the theme was decided, it seemed very easy to choose things like flowers, decorations, and everything else that comes with wedding choices. Anything lace, burlap, or vintage inspired I absolutely adored. We purchased tons of old milk glasses and made all of the signs from old barn wood. I was not particular about wanting everything to match completely; every flower arrangement unique and done by family. Sam is an engineer so everything that needed to be cut or created, he was on the job.  He was thrilled when I told him about the homemade wooden alter. He gathered up a few guys and literally assembled it the morning of the wedding.

My wedding dress was decided on after it seemed there was no hope. Once the Enzoani Blue gown was zipped, I knew I had finally found the one.  Everything about the dress was what I wanted: It was timeless, lace, and made me feel like a bride. Our choice of photographer was simple. As for hair and make-up, my sister and sister-in-laws did an excellent job. I wanted natural, soft makeup and long flowing curls and they gave me exactly what I wanted. When I saw the work of Stephanie Reeder Photography I knew that she would be able to capture the simple, meaningful moments the best. Her pictures tell stories and that is what we wanted for our day.

The wedding day was everything I wanted and more. It was so worth all of the stress, decision-making, and phone calls. My step-father and father gave me away and I finally joined hands with my handsome soon-to-be husband. We exchanged our own hand-written vows, held back most of the happy-tears, it was time for my favorite part of the entire day. Sam and I lit the unity candle and he prayed over our marriage for the first time. It was so meaningful and something I will never forget. Our day was so perfect and special. It truly was the best day of our lives and such a perfect way to begin a special, new journey together.

Talon Winery DIY Wedding from Cat Satre & Martine’s Pastries

A DIY affair should not be as chic, gorgeous, creative, and glam as the ones you talented couples send us. You amaze me with your fabulosity. Weddings like this Kentucky wedding have taken Do-It-Yourself weddings to an entirely new level, and I capital LOVE it. From the fan-tastic programs, to the mason jar centerpieces, to that delish cake from Martine’s Pastries, the whole affair is phenom. Make sure to check out the rest of Cat Satre‘s beautiful images in the full image gallery!

My wedding day was absolutely everything I could have ever wanted it to be. My fiancé and I had to live six hours away from each other during our engagement because of his job and my schooling, so it was a long a difficult planning process but came out perfectly! I am a Southern California girl and he is an Illinois farm boy, so we wanted to bring together our personalities and our different lives into one for our special day. I wanted it to be comfortable, fresh, and fun! I found a lot of the ideas of blogs, but some of them just evolved through brainstorming together.

We met in Kentucky so we decided to have our wedding at a local winery in Lexington, Talon Winery. It was a gorgeous setting the required minimal decorating. We were definitely on a budget and my mom, sister, and I did most of our decorations. Mason jars and fireflies are two things I love about living in the south. I knew even before we were engaged I wanted our colors to be green, my favorite color, and blue, his favorite color. Also, I knew I wanted light, fresh flowers and to decorate with mason jars. I really wanted to utilize the beautiful space that we had. I loved adding unique touches like a birdcage for letters, or a wooden cake stand.

We chose to do fans for the ceremony because we knew it would be hot! So my mom created templates to make them ourselves. We used shepherd’s hooks to hold our flower arrangements and used burlap and white drapery to decorate the gazebo. I loved using the barn next to the ceremony site for the reception. It had perfect lighting and just felt right. We made our own photo booth, had a remembrance table for family members who had passed away, gorgeous food by DaRae & Friends, and a gorgeous cake table. We love the kids we have in our lives and so we wanted to make sure we had a kid’s table for them to play at during the reception. For the send-off, we tied ribbons in our wedding colors to wands for everyone to wave since we couldn’t use sparklers. It ended the perfect day.

Louisville Wedding by Whitney Rae Photography

Talk about a cute story. This Bride and Groom were set up by the Bride’s grandparents and the culmination is this fabulous Louisville Wedding. Amanda Jacobs and Jaclyn Thomas Designs crafted this gorgeous affair with a ballroom that is ever so pretty in pink, a beautiful blushing Bride and maybe even a few Greek crowns. Yes, this is indeed a stunning display of indoor nuptials done so, so right. Whitney Rae Photography shot all the pretty images you see before you as well as the surplus of fabulousness to be found in the gallery. From the Bride…Nick and I met the old fashioned way: we were set up by my grandparents! When we got engaged in September of 2010, I had just moved with my immediate family from my childhood home of Louisville, Kentucky, to Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania, because of my daddy’s recent cancer diagnosis. The only decision we didn’t make was that we would get married in Louisville! There was no decision to be made, it will always be my home and I’m so glad we started our life together there.

Part of the reason we got married in Louisville was St. Michael’s (the church we got married in).  My daddy was the priest at St. Michael’s for 30 years when he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and the orthodox christian faith is something that Nick and I both share (my grandfather is the former priest and my uncle is the current priest at the orthodox church Nick grew up attending in New Jersey!). We were lucky to have 15 priests and one bishop serve at our wedding.

Nick and I, unlike most of the couples on SMP, had no idea what we wanted our wedding to be like when we got engaged. So, we each picked something we loved: books (me) and travel (him). We ended up with a quite unintentionally vintage, “pride and prejudice” wedding.  All of the cookies on our “sort of viennese” table were made by friends and my wonderful aunts. Our favors were half traditional Greek bombonieres (5 jordan almonds signifying health, wealth, happiness, fertility and long life) and half bar soap made at an orthodox men’s monastery in West Virginia (they make the soap themselves!).  We used vintage postcards as our guest book and a vintage suitcase as a collecting place for them.  Our wedding crowns (another greek orthodox tradition) were made by ann clough of orthodoxweddingcrowns.com–the crowns have special significance as they are kept by the bride and groom until death, then the ribbon connecting them is cut and the crown is buried with the deceased.  Our cultural contributions continued with Greek, Arabic and Russian dances at our reception, starting with the traditional greek wedding dance oraia poy ‘nai i nifi mas!
