How To Pick the Perfect Outfit for Your Engagement Session

Hi, fellow brides-to-be! It’s Ali from Love You, Mean It. I’m so excited to share our engagement photos with you today! Planning our e-sesh has been one of my favorite parts our engagement so far. We’ve used these beautiful images captured by Leslee Mitchell and Tarin Frantz on our wedding website and also printed a few for gifting to family. That said, it can also be stressful when deciding where to shoot and what to wear. So, I’ve put together a list of five tips to make the “what to wear” part a breeze.

1. Location

The first element to consider should be where you will be taking your photos. Will you be outside? What will the temperature be? Thinking through the locations will ensure you dress appropriately for the weather and will help inspire your outfits. If it will be chilly, you don’t want to be freezing the entire day. If you’re uncomfortable in your setting, you won’t be able to properly relax for the photos and be able to have fun. Will you be taking photos on a horse farm (like me!) or on grass? Don’t forget the appropriate footwear!

2. Number of Outfits

Once you have the location (or locations!) set with your photographer, it makes it easier to envision the appropriate outfits. Personally, I had two venues that I wanted different outfits for. I knew that I wanted to take more casual photos as well as dressier ones, and a few right in between. For me, it made sense to do the more casual photos when we were at home in Kentucky and take fancier ones in front of Perkins Chapel at SMU (just a few feet away from where we first met!). If you’re worried about coming off as “cheesy,” wear a typical Saturday outfit and it will make the photos look less staged and more real-life. On the other hand, I think it’s special to have photos that are a little more dressed-up to celebrate this exciting time. Ultimately, however, this is not the time to go completely out of your comfort zone when it comes to what you wear which leads me to my next point: deciding on the outfits!

3. Coordinate and Prepare Your Looks

It’s definitely necessary for both of you to think through and try-on your outfits before the day-of. You want to make sure you “match” each other when it comes to the level of dressiness. You also want to make sure you and your fiancé won’t clash and that everything is clean, pressed, and ready to go. If either of you have bought something new for the photos, make sure you give yourself plenty of time to receive the item and try it on so you can make any necessary alterations– you don’t want any surprises on the actual day! For our casual photos, I wore a solid color sweater and jeans and Ben wore a button down and jeans. Easy and comfortable! For the pictures we took in front of Perkins Chapel, I wore an ivory tulle skirt and embellished sweater from Jenny Yoo. My skirt felt bridal and super special. It’s actually from the same fabric that my bridesmaids dresses (also Jenny Yoo, of course!) will be made from which I thought was a special touch!

4. Test Your Wedding Hair/Make-up

If possible, engagement photos make a great occasion to test out your wedding hair and/or make-up. Luckily for me, I was able to meet with my wedding stylist when I was home in Kentucky for our photos. It allows you to get to know each other a little bit and, not to mention, your hair and make-up will be looking great in the photos! Because I wanted to look super natural, I asked for “my everyday look, just a little better!”

5. Be yourselves and have fun!

It’s a fact, staged photos can be AWKWARD. What you will wear should be the least of your worries! If you plan your outfits out ahead of time and feel good about them, it will be one less thing on your mind the day of the shoot. Also recommended: packing a cooler with snacks and champagne to celebrate as the day goes on!

From Kelli Lynn PhotographyAfter meeting when Lauren was 16 years old and Aaron was 18, these two love birds dated 4 years when Aaron asked Lauren to marry him on top of a hill overlooking the property that Lauren grew up on in Eastern Kentucky. Lauren knew that she didn’t want to have a long engagement, so after Aaron proposed last fall, they set the date for April 23rd, 2016.

The week of this wedding, everyone prayed that there would be no April showers. The morning of the wedding, we were blessed with clouds, but no rain. With the wedding beginning mid-day and all photos being taken prior to the ceremony, an overcast morning was perfect! This sweet couple are dear friends of mine and when they asked me to photograph their wedding I was beyond thrilled. This bohemian inspired wedding was filled with beautiful florals and was full of color. Lauren wanted to incorporate a lot of flowers and greenery that would give a very natural and organic feel.

Aaron and Lauren’s love is so contagious and their wedding day was filled with nothing but joy and laughter! The couple, the wedding party, family and all the guests were such a pleasure to work with and makes my photographer heart so very happy!

This Couple Said “I Do” On the Same Date They Met 22 Years Earlier

If the glow from this ceremony’s cackling fire doesn’t warm your heart, this Bride and Groom’s story and vision for their big day will: a small, immediate-family-only celebration in Kentucky. With a fireside ceremony, candles everywhere and a color palette of marsala, silver and gold, this gorgeous Bride and Groom became husband and wife on the same date they had met 22 years earlier. From The Bride…When Brad and I decided to marry we envisioned a small wedding, immediate family only, in our home state of Kentucky. Life and work had taken us away but home to us was still Kentucky with its beautiful horse farms, southern people and where all our families lived. We are so thankful we found GlenLary Estate. It is the most beautiful working horse farm with a southern plantation house and cabin that enabled all family to comfortably stay the night after the wedding and celebrate to our hearts content. Our planner, Alicia with Great Expectations, truly took care of everything and created exactly what I envisioned and more for a small intimate winter wedding with an abundance of flowers in marsala, silver and gold, candles and firelight. We couldn’t have been more delighted with every detail, especially the beautiful sitting room where the ceremony was held in front of the fireplace, and above all how kind and attentive everyone was to us and our families from the moment we arrived. We were able to truly celebrate together in the most gorgeous and relaxed setting. We wanted a full reception dinner and it was delicious. We had hoped for a little snow for our winter wedding and boy did Mother Nature deliver!!! Everything went as originally planned and we were able to say I Do on the day we met 22 years prior. Our families said it was the most beautiful, relaxed and intimate wedding they had ever attended. They loved being able to spend the day together getting ready, having the estate all to ourselves, truly enjoying the ceremony and dinner and each other.

Chic + Stylish Kentucky Horse Farm Wedding

Hold your horses darling readers, because this Kentucky equestrian farm wedding is sure to have you running a bit wild. It’s the type of pretty that is bound to carry us all away and it could only be captured by the ever so talented Whitney Neal Photography, and the results? From Jaclyn JourneySkye & Trey’s Hermitage Farm nuptials were chic, effortless, stylish, and comfortable. Both the bride and groom are Kentucky natives but live in NYC and wanted their out of town guests to experience the beauty of Kentucky’s rolling hills at the state’s oldest working horse farm.

The bride and groom hosted a weekend at Churchill Downs and Kentucky distilleries for their guests.
Skye walked down the aisle to Pretty Woman played by a bluegrass band on the porch of the historic 1800’s farm house. Her dad welded the flower covered arch they were married under.Skye chose punches of red (the signature color of Hermitage Farm) coral, peach, and pops of ivory for her color palate. She was married at the height of peony season so we were able to create lush arrangements with bold blooms.

We created a custom stamp illustration (High Fancy Paper) of their dog Louie for their wedding invitations
Skye surprised her groom with a boxwood wall for photos during cocktail hour and dinner. I surprised Skye with a wooden cut out of their custom monogram smack dab in the middle of the wall that could be removed and taken home as a little piece of their wedding.The groom created a custom bourbon bar for his out of town guests to partake in Kentucky tradition.Their late night chicken snack was driven in all the way from their hometown of Henderson Kentucky as a surprise to all their guests.

Elegant Floral-Filled Yew Dell Gardens Wedding

The personal little details that make a wedding unique are why I continue to fall in love with each new “I do” every single day. This Southern celebration took the idea of tender touches and ran with it, from the Groom wearing his grandfather’s dress shoes to a repeat of the Bride’s parent’s first dance song from their own Kentucky wedding years ago. Natalie Watson and Keepsake Films captured every magical moment, helping our VAULT shine even brighter – more this way!

From the Bride… I grew up visiting family in Kentucky every holiday and summer. The music, food, scenery, and traditions are embedded in my heart. Both our late and living grandparents were champions of hospitality. Mine of the Southern variety and his big Italian family style; we wanted the reception to have that warmth. The groom and I share a love of bourbon, music, and the great outdoors and I wanted to share the magic of Kentucky. Many of our guests had never visited the Bluegrass State (we were sure to arrange a distillery visit). As a prop/wardrobe stylist I dove whole heartedly into designing an ethereal and dreamy event.

Every detail was personal. My uncle officiated the ceremony and we wrote our own vows. The aisle was flanked by two lions to represent our matching Leo birthdays. The groom wore his grandfather’s dress shoes and his cousin sang “Can’t Help Falling In Love” which was my parent’s first dance song at their KY wedding 35+ years ago. My mom sewed and pressed 400 ft of bunting to hang in the sailcloth tent, a lot of which came from old dance costumes, dresses, and my old fabric from fashion school. I took a lot of pride in collecting the vintage crystal and creating DIY details. Comfort food was served family-style on the same china set my grandparents used for their dinner parties. Queen Anne’s Lace, a staple of my grandfather’s farm, was featured in every floral arrangement. A bluegrass quartet graced the ceremony and cocktail hour, a nod to our love of music and my Appalachian roots. A phenomenal funk band lead the dance party at the reception complete with the groom and I standing in for a song before our exit.

If I could summarize the day in a word, it would be one that many guests have used to describe the festivities: magical. The clouds parted and the sun beamed just at the moment of our pronouncement and kiss (and moments later the strings played “Here Comes The Sun”). A pleasant surprise to us, our venue had a sculpture show on display throughout the grounds. The weather was perfect even though the forecast said rain. The rare harvest blood moon lit up the sky, a night before its peak. Most importantly we got to celebrate the magic that is true love, share the beauty of Kentucky with friends and family, and through personal details honor those who have passed that made us who we are.
