Moody and Romantic Fall Supper & Calligraphy Workshop

Being around creative people inspires me to no end, so this lovely little gathering hosted and designed by Filigree Suppers would be such a dream night for me. With a show-stopping hand-lettered runner by Jenna of Vichcraft (we seriously can’t get over it), beautiful blooms by Foxglove Studio and delicious eats from Dusek’s – we kind of want to dive headfirst into every image from Carolina Mariana Rodriguez. See even more in the VAULT.

Letter and Lace was a cozy fall gathering that celebrated the art of calligraphy with a moody romantic aesthetic. This supper was the eleventh for Filigree Suppers, a design focused supper club in Chicago and NYC.

Filigree Suppers is all about bringing people together to celebrate creativity and break bread. Brita is a wedding planner in NYC, and Elise is a brand designer in Chicago. We have been friends for twenty years, and started getting serious about entertaining about fifteen years ago. This past February, we hosted our first official Filigree Supper. We have three goals when throwing a supper. First, we want our guests to learn about new artisans in the community. Second, we want people to see their city in a new way. Third, we love it when our guests connect socially and creatively. Since the start, we have thrown one to two suppers a month, each with a different theme, showcasing new artists, designers, chefs and spaces.

This event, “Letter and Lace”, took place in the Tack Room, a restored equestrian tack room from the turn of the century. The Tack Room is located in Thalia Hall in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. Built in 1892 by John Dusek with the goal of having a multi-purpose property that would offer commercial storefronts, residential housing, and a hall for the community, the building has been recently renovated and serves it’s original, community-driven purpose.

The theme really evolved a few months back, when we took a calligraphy class from Jenna Blazevich, of Vichcraft. We were so impressed with Jenna’s teaching style and how much we were able to learn after just a few hours, that we knew we had to create a supper that used her wild and imaginative calligraphy as inspiration. Playing off of the letters idea, we came up with “Letter and Lace”, a play on the Don Henley and Stevie Nicks duet “Leather and Lace”.

Upon arrival, Jenna took to the grand piano to do some “live calligraphy”, hand lettering special phrases or love notes by request. For the table, Jenna created a thirty-foot black table runner filled with contrasting, white letters. Guests found their name beautifully written on gold place cards, each next to a small glass wine cup with their first initial etched on the side.

Foxglove Studio amped-up the fall vibe with coral ranunculus, dahlias, wheat, and touches of other merlot hued flowers. Caitlin of Foxglove used combination of leather wrapped vases and fluted glass vessels for a whimsical feel. Candlesticks were a mix of vintage brass and black, paired with alternating white and burgundy tapers.

Dot & Army, a custom linen studio out of Georgia, created one-of-a-kind napkins for every guest. Each napkin was hand dyed a deep burgundy and finished with matching lace trim.

Every dish was beautifully prepared in the kitchen of Dusek’s, also located in Thalia Hall. Chef Jared Wentworth carried the Leather/Letter and Lace theme through to the menu by combining heartier leather-inspired elements such as smoked sirloin with roasted squash and charred brussel sprouts, with lighter, lace-inspired elements, like micro greens and bone marrow powder. Cocktails like “The Tack Room Buck”, made with bourbon, house-made ginger beer and lemon, were created by neighboring establishment, Punch House. Guests dined by candle light as the sun set, finishing the night off with a decadent plate of cookie dough, fernet chocolate chips, egg custard ice cream, chocolate cremeux and cookie powder.

The evening was a perfect transition from the warm evenings of summer, to the approaching holiday season. Every guest took home their personalized wine glass, and memories of a lovely evening with thirty-two friends, old and new.

Chic Chicago Riverwalk Engagement Session

Sometimes the sweetest, most thought out plans don’t always work out. Case in point, this adorable engagement story from these two. The handsome Groom-to-be planned on popping the question but a snowboarding accident caused a bit of delay. It all worked out in the end and when the snow melted, Jacqui Cole was able to snap some special pics that’s helping our VAULT shine a bit brighter right here!

From Jacqui Cole Photography… Alex and Eric decided to have their engagement session start at the brand new Chicago Riverwalk! No props or additions were needed for this sweet and simple session that is focussed solely on this wonderful couple :) From the Riverwalk we headed to their rooftop deck where they played a few games of Bocce Ball, one of their favorite pastimes! Luckily we made it to the Adler Planetarium to watch the sun set behind the city skyline! Alex and Eric are getting married in Lake Tahoe on June 25th 2016. Alex just loves organic, natural elements and is having a blast planning her wedding! Expect to see a lot of greenery, hand-calligraphy and beautiful custom pieces throughout their big day. For now, I will leave it to Alex to dish all the details on how SMP has been a huge, if not instrumental, part of her wedding planning so far!!

From the Bride-to-be… Eric and I have been together more than 7 years now. We are both from California and moved to Chicago for Eric to attend Northwestern Law School. Over our three years in Chicago we absolutely fell in love with the city. We knew we wanted our engagement pictures to represent this time in our lives and serve as a lifelong memory for the city we have grown so fond of. We spent our engagement session walking around our neighborhood and exploring the new Chicago Riverwalk. We treated it like a date, tried to act natural and take in the view!

We got engaged in February 2015 in Lake Tahoe, California. However… Eric’s original plan was to propose in Tahoe in December. The day before the big day, we were out skiing and Eric caught an edge on his snowboard and not just broke, but SHATTERED, his collarbone. Instead of getting engaged, we spent the next few days at the doctor preparing for his emergency surgery. 2 plates and 6 screws later, Eric was on the mend and in need a new plan. When we returned to Tahoe in February for my annual family ski trip, he led me to my uncle’s dock over the lake and got down on one knee. It could not have been a more spectacular backdrop!

Lake Tahoe has always been a special place for us so it was an easy decision to pick it as our wedding destination. Since the engagement session, we have relocated back to California and are enjoying spending more time up in Lake Tahoe planning our wedding. We can’t wait to gather all our friends and family in Tahoe this summer to celebrate our marriage and dance the night away!

Chicago Urban Loft Wedding

It’s just not a weekday morning unless I’ve read my cheeky news recap from theSkimm. So when Olivia Leigh sent the photos of co-founder, Danielle’s stunning Chicago wedding, we happily obliged to share. North Shore Weddings & Events didn’t disappoint with a city-chic-meets-rustic-cool vibe, and transformed a spacious loft into the most cozy of receptions. From Olivia Leigh… Danielle and Adam were married over Labor Day weekend in a day that was a perfect blend of beauty and celebration! After a year of rainy weekends, they were graced with beautiful blue skies and perfect temperatures that welcomed this NYC couple back to Danielle’s hometown of Chicago.

The couple did a first look, seeing each other in a park in the Gold Coast where Danielle used to play as a child. Megan Estrada of North Shore Weddings and Events and Yanni Design Studio transformed the raw loft space at Bridgeport Art Center into a romantic space that blended rustic and glamorous elements, with sweeping fabric, candlelight and lush greenery.

Another special touch was a gospel choir that sang as Danielle walked down the aisle with her father, a moment that I think gave goosebumps to everyone! After recessing down the aisle to another song by the choir, the evening’s fun continued, with incredible food by Entertaining Company, a first dance featuring lifts and spins that made for such fabulous moments to capture, and some of the best toasts I have ever heard in almost 10 years of shooting weddings! Guests celebrated late into the night, enjoying great music, food and a Chicago-New York themed candy bar.

Classic + Elegant Pink Chicago Wedding

I went to the Lincoln Park Zoo for the first time in my adult life recently, and after visiting, it’s no wonder why this sweet Bride and Groom decided to host their classic wedding reception at Cafe Brauer. With soft pink hues, regal centerpieces and a beautiful Lazaro dress, this elegant affair, captured by Emilia Jane Photography, is sure to inspire. See all the beauty in THE VAULT!

From The Bride…We met through mutual friends. Russell and I both found ourselves celebrating the 4th of July in Lake Geneva at the same lake house. The entire weekend was filled with jet skiing, s’mores, dance parties, boating & all around summer fun. However, the highlight was during the firework show when sparks flew as we enjoyed one of our first kisses on a historic boat cruise. After that weekend, we were inseparable & spent pretty much every free day together, aside for when Russell was traveling internationally for work. I think we both knew pretty early on that we were destined to end up together. I remember Russell joking that my initials & monogrammed items wouldn’t have to change since both my maiden name & his last name started with a B. That’s where our nicknames (RB & HB) came from.

On a snowy New Year’s Day, Russell took me on a walk around the Gold Coast. He’s from Georgia, so he didn’t have the appropriate attire on. I remember him wearing Sperry’s & khakis and I thought he was crazy. When we got to one of the corners that we would frequent, he got down on one knee, & pushed aside a pile of snow to reveal he had carved our initials into the sidewalk. It was the most romantic, snow globe moment, I’ve ever felt in my life.

Favorite Part of Wedding Planning:
1. Us as a couple: I wanted to prioritize making the day as representative of the two of us as a couple and as individuals as possible. I grew up in Michigan & Russell grew up in Georgia, so I loved trying to incorporate nods to the midwest mixed with southern charm & elegance. At the reception, we created signature drinks with a variety of personalized cocktail stirrers. We served a spinach salad with Michigan cherries alongside a Georgia peach soup as our first course followed by a selection of our two favorite dishes to cook (Short Ribs were Russell’s & Salmon & asparagus were mine).

2. Family: I loved incorporating both of our family’s traditions into the day as well. We both carried heirlooms from past grandparents and great-grandparents to during the ceremony to represent those family members that weren’t able to be there with us. We also have a family recipe for red velvet cake that my great grandmother used to make, which was the flavor of cake that we had. I also did a custom Montenegrin polka with my father after our first dance, as a nod to the country that he was born in.

3. Custom Details: I had the most fun incorporating custom elements throughout the day so our wedding day felt fresh. I helped custom design our invitation with Antiquaria, actually scouring ebay to source a vintage postcard with an image of Café Brauer to use as the RSVP response card. I also did the calligraphy on all elements at the wedding, which I loved! (Menu, Signage, Envelopes, Place Cards, Escort Cards & Favors). I crafted the escort card holders via inspiration I found on Pinterest (not surprising) and Russell and I wrote personalized notes to every single guest that we had at the wedding. Each person that was invited to our wedding day has touched us, inspired us, helped shape us and become the individuals that we are today, and we wanted to make sure that they all knew that. We also made homemade sweet tea & lemonade. The sweet tea was another Georgia touch for Russell, while the lemonade was for me. All of my friends know that I drink lemonade like water, so I made mine special by infusing flavors like lavender & rose.

Favorite Part of the Day: For both of us, it was the ceremony. Walking down the aisle with both of my parents, looking at Russell, was the most impactful moment of my life. Seeing everyone that we love, come together to celebrate us as a couple & our marriage was so special. I also loved getting ready with all of my bridesmaids, mother & grandmother and my awesome hair & makeup team the morning of. Seeing the flowers that Sarah created for the first time and the reception room was truly magical – it was exactly what I dreamt up in my mind. Sure there were a few small hiccups (foggy weather, & a missing party bus to name a few), but that’s not what I remember. When people ask me how our wedding day went, I tell them it was an absolute dream that ended with me being married to my best friend and love of my life. It was perfect and one of my favorite days in my entire life.

Romantic Jewel Tone Inspired Wedding in Downtown Chicago

Most garden weddings are done in sweet pastels and light neutrals (which, I adore). But when I saw this Chicago couple’s rich jewel-tone color palette, I was taken aback by the berry-colored bouquets and sapphired-hued bridesmaids’ dresses. Combine that with this sweet couple, entertainment from Toast And Jam and photos from Emily Steffen for a perfect day. See it all in THE VAULT.

From Emily SteffenRebecca had a vision for a garden-esque, greenery inspired wedding in downtown Chicago and BOY did she pull it off perfectly, with the help of the amazing Ashley from Midwestern Bride! :) They tied the romantic and the classic together perfectly with a traditional ceremony at Assumption church and a garden-party, type reception at Galleria Marchetti! :) That night, every guest felt the romance and charm from the city as they celebrated amongst family and friends and toasted the new MR and MRS! :)

Romantic Industrial Chic Wedding

You know what I love?  This stunning bride and groom – a twosome that clearly knows everything there is to know about throwing a fab party.  Think a team of awesome vendors (hello there, Canvas Weddings), yummy food and much “too confident” dancing.  Check out the sweet film from Revolution Weddings below, then head to THE VAULT for every beautiful moment captured by Britta Marie.

From Canvas Weddings… Erin and Jon are artists, and their wedding was such a clear reflection of that fact. The entire day was rich, vibrant and full of meaning — even the flowers in Erin’s bouquet were chosen largely based on the meanings of the individual flowers.

The wedding’s aesthetic was largely based on the juxtaposition of soft and hard textures — delicate florals added elegance to the modern industrial backdrop of the reception space, Erin’s gorgeous calligraphy swirled across hardwood signs, and the light pink, ivory and gold color palette softened the dark wood harvest tables and gunmetal chairs. The day was visually striking and immaculately cohesive while maintaining a soft, laid back elegance.

The details of this day were incredible, but nothing could possibly outshine Erin and Jon and their love for each other. Their self-written vows were incredibly special.

From the Bride… Our wedding day was beyond anything I could have imagined. It was a perfect day that went by waaaaaay too fast. Jon and I keep saying “I can’t believe it’s over.”

Our ceremony was held at the Peggy Notebart Nature Museum in Chicago. The outdoor space was gorgeous and the weather could not have been more beautiful! We wanted to keep the ceremony short, sweet and meaningful. The whole event was focused around this section of Psalm 1:

“Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.”

We love the imagery of a tree being planted by streams of water. We actually originally wanted to get married standing in a river but everyone I told that to made fun of us or told us it would be a logistical nightmare! So we decided to incorporate the Psalm in different ways (hence the nature museum) and instead of a unity candle, we decided to plant a tree together. We wrote our own vows which everyone kept telling us was so brave. We discovered why they say that because both of us barely got through them. So many tears! And that was pretty much it. In what felt like no time at all, we were husband and wife! I really never thought I would be so nervous for my wedding ceremony, not because I was unsure about marrying Jon or anything like that. I just didn’t know that I was going to be able to contain my sobs, I didn’t want to trip, I wanted my dress to look pretty, I didn’t want to step on my veil, I didn’t want us to completely miss on our kiss! I even asked Jon to rehearse it a few times the weeks leading up to the wedding. Jon didn’t understand, haha. I just feel like no one ever tells you about how nervous you will be, or at least no one told me!

Next up was pictures, which Britta flew through smoothly (Side note: Britta was absolutely my favorite choice out of the whole wedding day. This girl is gold.) We rode a trolley around to take pictures with our entire bridal party. It was so fun. We sang loudly to One Direction and “Cheerleader.” Jon got a little too confident with his dance moves.

Then it was time for the reception! Second favorite choice of the day: Ovation Chicago, our reception venue. I mean this place could not be more gorgeous. The aesthetic of the whole day was very important to me and Ovation provided a blank canvas of sorts that really fit in with my vision of industrial meets romantic. This kind of became the “theme” of our wedding, if you will. I just really love the harsh industrial space with soft pretty decor. The contrast is both surprising and beautiful to me. Another favorite part of the day was all the details that I personally created! My calligraphy was all over this reception and I was very proud of that. We had some BBQ, listened to some amazing toasts, cried, laughed, took pictures in the photo booth, ate some gelato and Schmakary’s cookies and danced our little booties off!

Before I knew it, it was time to go and it was all over! So many people stayed until the very end to send us off with sparklers and shout their love as we drove off in the most elegant car I have ever been in — a ’59 Rolls Royce.

I have absolutely no regrets with the wedding and that is just the best feeling ever. Jon and I keep talking about how unbelievably grateful we are to our family and friends that put so much into making our day perfect for us, and how we are so excited for all of our friends to get married so we can humbly serve them as they all did with us. I could not be more excited to be married to the love of my life. Jon is it. He’s the best and I love him.

Romantic Chicago Botanic Garden Summer Wedding

Botanic Gardens weddings earn a gold star in my book. With Mother Nature in her element, they’re transformed into pretty little wonderlands and this Chicagoan celebration is no different. Captured by Tamara Gruner, this pair said “I do” and danced the night away thanks to Toast & Jam’s music magic. It’s Friday, so let loose and feast upon these fantastic photos in our VAULT right here!

From the Bride… I was working as a leasing agent for a summer and little did I know, my future husband would be my one and only sale! I found him an apartment, we fell in love and that apartment later became our home. Lance proposed to me in New York City at 30 Rock last August. The year that followed was a whirlwind of memorable moments.

My wedding inspiration was to create a dreamy escape into a secret garden for an evening. The Chicago Botanic Gardens was the perfect backdrop with lush greenery and pops of colorful flowers. I fell in love with the English Walled Garden from the moment I walked in. I just knew this intimate space was the perfect setting to marry my now husband. I felt that same certainty when I tried on my Vera Wang dress. I was smitten with the beautiful design. Every couple has their own unique style that should shine through from the choice of venue to the small details of the wedding. The ceremony was lovely and I felt so grateful we were able to personalize it and make it meaningful to us with our hand-picked readings, a stone ceremony and our written vows. Hearing my groom’s heartfelt words was by far my favorite moment of the day.

After cocktail hour in the garden, guests walked to the nearby tented pavilion for the reception as Spanish guitar music played. I chose a soft palette of blush, ivory and gold. Hydrangeas, roses, dahlias and gold mercury candle holders adorned the blush tablecloths. I added a little glitz to the space with chandeliers, a gold sequin table cloth on the place card table and glam lounge furniture. My mom chose a bakery to help create a delicious sweet table. I really think the details are what make a wedding, and although overwhelming at times, they are so worth it in the end! The reception had so many highlights – my Maid of Honor’s hilarious speech, dancing to Frank Sinatra with my Dad, cutting our beautiful cake and listening to our parents’ touching toasts. I loved dancing under the stars, as the night drew to a close. It was the best day of my life to marry my husband, celebrate with my guests and see all my planning come to fruition. Best day ever!

Colorful + Classic Geneva Country Club Wedding

This country club wedding from North Shore Weddings And Events is anything but stuffy. From the vibrant color scheme and adorable flower girls to the preppy tabletop design, this Eagle Brook Country Club is full of personality and pizzazz. But the gorgeous design details from take back stage to this sweet couple’s love, captured by Kristin La Voie Photography. See it all in The Vault.

From Kristin La Voie Photography… We started our first look at the lovely Herrington Inn in downtown Geneva. SO picturesque! We headed down the road to one of my favorite spots, Fabyan Forest Preserve, to capture more beauty. The nuptials took place under a stunning canopy at Eagle Brook Country Club, followed by cocktails and the reception inside their main ballroom. Town & Country Gardens knocked it out of the park with these amazing, vibrant flowers. My favorite detail was the choice of preppy table runners on each table. Of course, everything went off without a hitch thanks to North Shore Weddings & Events.

She Wore Her Mom’s Wedding Dress and It’s Anything But Boring

I wore the gown my mom and aunt both wore, altered a bit to fit my tastes, along with my great-grandmother’s aquamarine necklace,” said this Chicago bride. And if you ask us, it was a wedding style home run! Taylor Lord, with assistance by Justin Tearney, captured this summer city celebration, planned by LK Events, absolutely dripping with beauty. From the classic elegance of the Chicago History Museum to the dreamy Jenny Yoo bridesmaid dresses, your eyes are in for a fabulous feast straight ahead!

From the Bride… Rob and I met in college, but didn’t start dating until after college while traveling Europe with a group of our friends. We bonded over our love for adventure and never looked back. We lived in Dallas for a few years before moving to Chicago for Rob’s career. After five years together, Rob proposed to me at Trump Tower overlooking the Chicago River and the next day we took off for French Canada to spend a few days celebrating together and talking about our next and best adventure.

We decided to get married in Chicago even though neither of us is from here. It’s the place where our relationship grew and blossomed and it will forever hold a special place in our hearts. We wanted to find a venue that had a Chicago vibe to it. After stepping into banquet hall of the Chicago History Museum, I got teary-eyed imagining us getting married there and quickly knew that was the right spot.

The day of the wedding, the girls got ready at the Public Chicago. The bridesmaids wore grey floor-length Jenny Yoo gowns and I wore the gown my mom and aunt both wore, altered a bit to fit my tastes, along with my great-grandmother’s aquamarine necklace.

Before heading to the museum Rob and I shared our first look in the privacy of the hotel room. Rob looked handsome in his custom Hickey-Freeman tuxedo from my family’s store in Dallas, Culwell & Son. The first look was my favorite moment of the day! I was pretty nervous all morning, but seeing him before we walked down the aisle was just what I needed. It was a perfect quiet moment for us to have all to ourselves and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

After we said our vows, we had another moment to ourselves to have a quick bite and a glass of prosecco before heading out to the terrace for cocktail hour. I loved that we had taken pictures before the ceremony and got to spend even more time with our guests who had traveled from all over the country.

The reception began with the cutting of our cake and then dinner was served. One of Rob’s favorite things I do for him is cook. The catering company, Food for Thought, re-created Rob’s favorite dish that I’ve cooked for him which made dinner really special and unique. Instead of giving speeches after dinner, we had done them the night before at our rehearsal dinner which was smaller and more intimate. After dinner, we moved to the dance floor for our first dances and soon after, the rest of the guests had joined.

We knew that we wanted our reception to feel like one big party and to us that meant great music and dancing. The incredibly entertaining and talented Gold Coast All-Stars played the entire night and guests danced for hours! The very last song was our favorite though. Our guests gathered around us in a big a circle swaying back and forth as we danced in the middle and as the song came to an end, they all ran in around us creating a huge group hug of sorts. It was a really special and emotional moment for us that we weren’t expecting.

Film photographer, Taylor Lord captured our entire day exactly as I had imagined. Her artistic eye left us with dreamy, ethereal images that captured the sweetest, candid moments of the day and her cheery personality put everyone at ease. The entire night ran perfectly without a hitch under the direction of Nicole Zenner of LK Events. She was the kindest, most thoughtful, and most patient wedding planner we could have asked for! We felt blessed to have worked with such amazing people who made the start of our new lives together everything we had imagined.

Classic + Elegant Country Club Wedding

There’s something so classic and timeless about a country club wedding—the sprawling landscape and elegant ballrooms make a gorgeous backdrop for any occasion. Case in point: this lovely St. Charles affair. With a sage green, gold and cream color scheme, all-white floral arrangements and a elated couple, this day, captured by Jacqui Cole Photography, is the definition of lovely. See it all in The Vault.

From Jacqui Cole PhotographyGrace and John chose to host their wedding reception at the beautiful St. Charles Country Club. Grace looked beautiful in her Sottero gown and cathedral length veil. The bridesmaid dresses were the perfect shade of sage (celadon) and the neutral florals were a wonderful romantic touch. The reception colors were classic and elegant incorporating ivory and golds. Grace and John couldn’t stop smiling all day!

From the Bride…My husband, John, and I met in college during our sophomore years. We quickly learned that we grew up in the same suburb of Chicago. We were astonished that we had never crossed paths in the past, but we were thrilled to learn that we had numerous mutual friends. This was something that we were so blessed with and something that created an incredibly fun wedding party! We dated for around 4 years before John made me the happiest girl and asked if I would be his wife. We decided to have a longer engagement so I could finish law school and so we could have time to plan our wedding together.

The most important part of our wedding day was the ceremony at the church that I grew up in. St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Wheaton has been a part of my life since I was baptized and John joined our faith and parish about seven months before our wedding. We celebrated our marriage with a full Mass, surrounded by family and friends. From St. Michael’s, we were excited to choose a reception hall that was located on beautiful grounds. St. Charles Country Club has a long driveway entrance and is tucked away, which gives it a private feel. The country club boasts an classily decorated clubhouse with a large balcony overlooking the pristine tree lined fairways.

We wanted our wedding to have a traditional and elegant feel. This is why we chose all soft colors throughout the day. The girls’ dresses were a light green and all of the flowers in both the church and reception were white. We decided to add accents of gold within certain decorations to add a little contrast. It was important to us that everything looked and felt relaxed.

We had one goal for our reception: To make sure that our guests had a blast. We wanted our guests to walk away saying that everything from the food to the music to the company was amazing. Therefore, we decided to book a band, which was one of our best decisions that we made! The dance floor was packed from the moment they started playing until the last song of the night. My husband and I barely left the dance floor all night long.

We were so blessed with all of the vendors that we chose. We were in great hands from the beginning and because of that John and I were able to relax and fully enjoy our special day. Every vendor that we chose was incredibly professional and we were so thankful for that. Jacqui Cole, our photographer, was one of our favorite vendors. Thanks to her experience, excitement and professionalism, we have pictures that will last us a lifetime. Her photographs truly captured how we envisioned our wedding day. She went far above and beyond our expectations.

Aside from marrying the love of my life, my favorite part of the night was something my husband and I did during our reception. Multiple people suggested to us that during the reception, it is important to take a moment together to really look take everything in. Following that advice, during one song when the dance floor was packed, my husband grabbed my hand and escorted me off of the dance floor into the corner of the room. He put his arm around me and we both took a deep breath and stared out into the mass of people dancing, singing and laughing. It looked as though everyone was enjoying themselves to the fullest and we could not have been happier at that moment. We were thrilled to know that all of our guests were there because they loved and supported us. It was an out of body experiences to see that the people that meant more to us than we could possibly describe were having a blast at our wedding.

From The Bride…When Andrew and I got engaged, I knew planning would be tricky since this was going to be a classic Midwest (Chicago) meets urban New York City wedding –  but I also knew that planning would be a blast for the same reason! We made a list of the words we wanted to describe our day and came up with: authentic, personal, relaxed, and romantic. Most importantly, we wanted our friends and family to walk away feeling loved and valued, knowing they were an integral part of this new family we were creating.

In our search for the perfect venue, we sought spaces that embodied those words. We chose Chicago Temple for our ceremony because it’s a skyscraper (and you can’t get more “Chicago” than architecture!) but it’s also the kind of church open to the entire community, regardless of religion, with a congregation who does really powerful things for their community,
and that’s the kind of energy we wanted for our day.

River Roast housed our reception, because it was also so “Chicago” – an old warehouse, sitting on the Chicago River, that’s now a restaurant. We knew good food was incredibly important to us and River Roast is first and foremost a fantastic restaurant! It also had an undone, romantic quality to it – the warm exposed brick and stunning view of the river and skyline had our guests (and us) in awe.

In order to create the essence of undone romance to contrast our urban setting, I knew we’d need stunning florals and great lighting. Lynn from Pollen blew me away with what she created! She merged Andrew’s modern, edgy desires for lots of floating candles with my dreams of loose, garden-y florals and “rose trees” (as I called the tall centerpieces). I will never forget walking into our reception for the first time (I cried!) because Lynn and our lighting designer had created this magical, romantic space that blew me away. To accent the florals, we bought gold chargers and set the tables with white bowtie napkins (one of two DIY projects that I did. Note to readers who want bowtie napkins – they’re fabulous and oh-so-easy… just don’t wait until two days before the wedding to tie them!) We also had a generous helping of candles in mercury glass votives all over: The candlelight on the golden brick at River Roast created such a lovely glow, thanks again to Lynn! We included several touches to make the ceremony and reception truly ours.

For the ceremony, I carried a piece of jewelry on my bouquet belonging to each of our Grandmas who were no longer with us – my maternal grandmother’s engagement ring, Andrew’s maternal grandmother’s ring (which happens to be sapphire, his birth stone), and Andrew’s paternal grandmother’s opal brooch (which happens to be my birth stone). We also included our Frenchie, “Iceman” in the ceremony as the ring bearer – we are so grateful to the Chicago Temple for allowing him to participate!

For the reception, we greeted guests with a framed thank you note we wrote specifically to convey our gratitude and love. We framed our favorite love quotes and placed them on the highboys during cocktail hour. We also hand-wrote each person’s place card and used nicknames or inside jokes for many of our guests rather than their formal names.  We chose our funfetti cake instead of going the more traditional or “grown up” route and serving more refined or fancy flavors.  We also entered the reception via boat, which was Andrew’s TOTAL stroke of genius/contribution to the wedding planning process and it worked out beautifully! It was so memorable to see everyone waving and cheering for us as the boat pulled up to the dock.

Our reception music was so “us” – a great mix of classics with the hits of today and I loved seeing all our guests, regardless of age, jamming with us (I even noticed aunts and uncles who I’ve never seen dance out there grooving). Our photographer, Britta, snagged amazing candids of the dance floor and Andrew and I have spent hours laughing over them and enjoying how much fun everyone had together.

All in all, the day was far beyond anything I expected and I still get so overwhelmed by love, gratitude, and excitement when I think about it. We owe a huge thank you to all of our vendors and our friends and family for helping us create this day of our dreams!

From The Groom…Best. Day. Ever.  You hear those three words tossed around quite a lot when people refer to their weddings. They even put it on napkins and make signs with them. Well, I finally realized why. It was mostly the little things (and some of big things too) that truly made our wedding the Best Day Ever.

The day started with a gift (so private that she would be mad if I wrote what it was) from my beautiful wife. Let’s just say it was perfect. Then, meeting Becca for our first look was a moment I will never forget. Our photographer, Britta, made us forget she was there and the moment was completely surreal. We included our Frenchie, Iceman, in our first look (after a few minutes) and in our ceremony and I’m so glad we did.

Some of the other personal touches were really what made the day for me. From Becca including all of the Grandmas’ jewelry on her bouquet, to including Iceman in our ceremony, to spending time between the ceremony and reception with our bridal party on a boat, the day was flawless. We also used hybrid vows – exchanging the traditional vows while also writing individual promises for each other. That moment was perfect (I’m tearing up as I write this…if that tells you anything).

There’s something really magical about having so many people you love from different parts of your lives all together in the same space for one day – all to celebrate with you and to kick off your new life together. We had written and framed a thank you note to everyone that greeted them when they walked in the reception and I’m so thrilled that we did because it truly encapsulated everything we were feeling.

The other personal touch that meant a lot to me, specifically, was the pens we included as favors. They didn’t necessarily fit the “romantic” vibe Becca and our vendors were creating, but they were so personal that they were perfect. My sister, Michelle, was born with Cerebral Palsey and the individuals in her program craft these pens to raise money. Becca and I decided to offer them as our favors as a way to include Michelle and to give back while also giving a gift. My wife is so beautiful and I’m so lucky and this day was the perfect example of that :)

Elegant Chicago Engagement

From a quiet garden to that famous city skylineOrange Photographie has captured an elegant e-sesh that has got me floating on cloud nine. From the striking statement these med-school sweethearts made on North Avenue Beach, to the peaceful woodland walk they shared, it’s all waiting for you in The Vault!

From Orange Photographie… Tanuja & Amit met in Chicago after they both moved there for medical school. Their paths crossed one night at a party neither of them wanted to go to, and after a crazy night of trying to get home, they exchanged numbers and started building a friendship. The two eventually fell in love with each other and Chicago, so it only made sense that they used the beautiful city as a backdrop for their engagement session. They had plans to move back to Amit’s home state of Florida shortly after their engagement session, so they wanted these photos to represent their time in the city and their love that blossomed there.

Chicago has an amazing array of locations to choose from for photo sessions, from quiet gardens to that famous city skyline. Tanuja and Amit wanted contrasting spots that showed off the best the city has to offer. We started in the peaceful woodland setting of the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool for some more naturally romantic photos and then finished the evening with a striking statement of the two in front of the Chicago skyline dressed to kill. These two have a classic, elegant style that blended perfectly with both locations we visited, especially Tanuja’s stunning black geometric dress from Guess she wore on our last stop of the evening at North Avenue Beach.

A Chicago Pied-a-terre Home Tour

This home is what pied-a-terre dreams are made of. Tucked inside is a subtle, elegant color palette reminiscent of the Chicago skyline, striking art, and a master bathroom that we could honestly live the rest of our days in. Designed by The Chad James Group with photography by Alyssa Rosenheck, have a look here for even more from this gorgeous space right here.

This home is in a prime location off of Michigan Avenue. In this project, Chad’s inspiration for the palette was taken from the colors of the Chicago skyline at the “golden hour”, as the sun sets and illuminates the architecture of the city and Lake Michigan.

This home is the perfect balance of sophistication combining both masculine and feminine influences throughout. The combined formal living and dining area incorporates subtle tones reflection the hues at sunrise and sunset. The kitchen employs bold lines and strong steal details reminiscent of Chicago’s strong foundation in architecture and cityscapes.
And the relaxed tv room is the room closest to the lake and incorporates grays and blue hues magnifying the views of the water adorned with vintage blue prints from midway airport.

Chad James is known for implementing a harmonious blend of masculine and feminine influences with his interiors. The Chad James Group has a distinguished architectural and interior brand based in Nashville Tn. His designs incorporate accents from the local environment, so as to “bring the outdoors in” is a theme you will find with his interiors from coast to coast. You will often find thought provoking uses of texture and fabric amongst clean lines. Chad and his talented team implement intention in every detail and meaning behind every layer when designing for his national and international clientele.

From The Bride…The first Saturday in May proved to be the perfect timing for our Chicago wedding. Albeit, we prepped for the picturesque day at the Blackstone Hotel which was in the midst of NFL Draft Town. Luckily, due to our amazing team, it did not even hit the radar of any part of our bridal party, friends or family. We were able to capture the most amazing moments prior to our ceremony due to the extraordinary sunshine on a perfect Chicago spring day.

Our foremost desire for our wedding was to find a unique venue that not only allowed our personalities to shine through each facet of the day, but also to provide our nearest and dearest a memorable evening at one location. We both fell in love with the Skyline Loft and immediately thought of unique touches the moment we stepped off the elevator into the space. One of our favorite items was the bespoke champagne bar in the large freight elevator for our 250 guests as they arrived and were brought up the lift for the ceremony. Once they exited the elevator, they were welcomed into a sun drenched ceremony space overlooking the city skyline while a string trio performed.

Cocktails, dinner and dancing followed in the space, which played host to an amazing sunset view, as the night of fun commenced for all. The French garden theme shone through each table setting with hand crafted moss wreaths adorned with calligraphy and ribbon for each guest. The room was adorned with crystal chandeliers and ivory draping to add a classic garden flair to the wooden beamed backdrop. Floral arrangements at each table varied in height and composition to balance against the hanging décor.

Overall, we wanted the details to represent how much fun we have with one another, our friends and family to create an atmosphere that allowed our family and friends to have a complete blast on this joyous occasion. At the end of the evening as guests departed with donuts and coffee in hand, I believe we all agreed it was apparent that this was the absolute best night of our lives.

Industrial

From The Bride… David and I met in the summer of 2008, both working as designers at an advertising agency in Chicago. By that October (10/10 to be exact), our friendship was something more… and five amazing years later, David proposed at an orchard on a crisp October day— in honor of my love all things Fall and in celebration of when our relationship first began. So a Fall wedding the following October was only fitting… and we were married on our exact sixth year anniversary in a bright and airy industrial loft space in Chicago.

Our biggest desire for our wedding day was to create intimate memories and an extremely joyful celebration for ourselves and our guests that felt uniquely “us.” We asked two of our best friends, old coworkers where David and I first met that have known us since day one of our relationship, to marry us with a ceremony that we all wrote together that truly captured the beauty of our relationship. An intimate warming of the rings was followed by poetry from our favorite author, Pablo Neruda, read in English and Spanish to honor David’s Mexican heritage. Standing beside amazing friends, family, and our adorable dog and co-flower girl, Bananas, we recited vows we each wrote for each other as a violinist played Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” softly in the background. After the emotional ceremony, we walked down the aisle as husband and wife as the string duet played Tears for Fears’ “Head Over Heels.” Guests were immediately greeted by a live Mariachi band for an outdoor cocktail hour before a reception of delicious traditional Mexican fare, ombre wedding cake, Portraitbooth fun and nonstop dancing until the lights came on.

The entire day was made up of irreplaceable moments and intimate details. Being art directors at our day jobs in advertising, as well as running my own design company, Sugar & Gold, that specializes in events, design, and decor, David and I are constantly surrounded by design. And we know that true design is only as beautiful as the meaning behind it. So it was important for us to bring meaning in all of the little details that made up the visual richness and backdrop of our wedding. All while staying within budget… not an easy task, but we were up for the challenge.

One of the most important design elements was the official invitation… and after designing for other brides in the past, I was thrilled to finally get to design my own! It featured a custom monogram that I created with our initials E and D that took on the shape of a heart, and this element was used throughout all of our wedding stationery… including on post-ceremony pieces where our last initial “V” was added to frame the bottom of the heart. A custom accordion fold enclosure, which featured photography that I took of dozens of gorgeous peonies and Juliet roses, held blush and gold foil invitations that we designed.

On the day itself, including influences and wedding traditions from my Italian heritage and David’s Mexican culture in small ways was very important to us. Since Vaca (my husband’s last name) means cow in spanish, we had subtle hints to this around the wedding including a golden mini cow. We chose signature cocktails to also reflect our cultures — “The Emillini” (a traditional peach bellini) and “The Vacarita” (David’s custom margarita)— which complimented the mini Limoncello favors that we bottled. The sweets bar offered Italian wedding cookies made by the mother of one of my bridesmaids from a custom family recipe, as well as traditional Mexican wedding cookies that David’s mother made. The centerpieces consisted of oversized paper flowers, a nod to tissue paper flowers of Mexican culture, that sat on custom stands we built. We handcrafted over 70 paper peonies and garden roses (with the help of so many amazing friends) from florist crepe paper and gold painted paper leaves. Seating assignments and table numbers resembled papel picado (Mexican white paper flags traditional at weddings) with a custom cut pattern that we designed, which also played into a custom gold bar overlay we built that featured a V shape for our name. Other elements we handcrafted included a custom brass facet that held our rings, plaster flowers used as the cake topper, painted cake and entry tables, and glitter dipped bridal shoes and cathedral lace veil. For our guest book, we cut a slit in one of seven the giant faceted pinatas that we built for our save the date photo shoot, so that guests could slip in a note for us to read on our first anniversary when we break it open to celebrate.

The only way we were able to achieve any of this for our wedding meant doing everything ourselves that we could and, more importantly, enlisting in the amazing help of our wonderful family, wedding party, and friends. In fact, one of my coworkers and good friends, was the day-of coordinator, and she took care of every detail seamlessly so that we could simply enjoy every second of the day without stressing. It truly took a village to make our wedding as wonderful as it was, and we could not have done it without the countless hours that everyone gave us to make it happen. And we are so grateful that we found such an amazingly talented photographer and videographer that were able to craft such stunning images reflecting all of those candid moment and loving details… each frame they captured means to world to us and will just as much when we look through them and relive every moment 30 years from now.

Glamorous + Whimsical Garden-Inspired Wedding at the Art Institute of Chicago

This Chicago wedding isn’t just gorgeous and glamorous (do you see that flower arch?!)—it’s full of details that incorporate the couple’s love story, like the hand-painted paper goods (they bonded over art), the color scheme (she loves pink, he loves purple), and the Groom’s cake cupcake (the Bride explains below!). And the photos, by Olivia Leigh Photographie, are as beautiful as the day. See them all here.

Whimsical

From The Bride….If I thought being proposed to by the love of my life was the best day of my life, I could not have even prepared myself for our wedding day! Reza and I met in a hot yoga class and immediately connected because of our love for family, art, yoga, travel, and dogs. Reza proposed to me in Costa Rica on our two-year anniversary (I was very surprised!) and quickly started wedding planning as soon as we got back.

We wanted a really glamorous but whimsical (think, playing in the woods when you are little and stumbling upon acres of wildflowers and lilies of the valley) wedding in the city of Chicago since that is where we met. The Modern Wing at The Art Institute of Chicago was the most natural and perfect decision for us for a venue since we both love art, especially painting. I water-colored all of the menus, place cards, and other signage, all while teaching Reza how to watercolor—usually at 3am!

The flower arch with the hanging chandelier in the ceremony was the most important décor item to us because we both wanted something special to stand under/front of when we became husband and wife. Reza loves purple and I love pink, and the flowers that made up the arch were these springy, light pinks and purples, organic, bouncy flowers.

Our other favorite décor and moment together was right before the reception started, only Reza and I were in the reception room at Terzo Piano. I could not help but put my hand over my mouth and cry of happiness because of how all the little details we had been planning for the last nine months came together beautifully. I had a surprise grooms cake made with a big smile on the giant cupcake cake because Reza is a dentist and there is a long story of how I would  send him massive cupcakes to get Reza to finally date me. Together we picked out twenty-four postcards of famous paintings and painters we love and I wrote on the back of each card (twice because I wanted two postcards per table!) a personalized note to the guests at each table about why that painting or painter meant so much to us. Having those personal touches from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception is what was the most fun part of the wedding for me. I wanted our guests to feel like we truly appreciated them being at our special day, and I wanted to feel the love in the room between all our families and friends and of course Reza and me. I believe we achieved those goals.

Elegant + Organic Chicago History Museum Wedding

Get ready, lovies, because there’s a whole lot of pretty coming your way from this Chicago wedding. From the Bride’s bejeweled Carolina Herrera gown, Manolo Blahnik shoes and stunning makeup from Nika Vaughan to Chicago History Museum‘s gorgeous garden and ballroom, this wedding, captured to perfection from Ann & Kam Photography & Cinema, is oh-so-lovely. See it all here.

From Ann & Kam Photography & CinemaI knew I liked Rachel from the first time we talked—her easy laughter and kind nature came through even on the telephone. Then I had the pleasure of a little phone call from her mom, when I really fell in love with their whole family. It was easy to feel how much this family loves and cares for each other, and I was in love with them for it. Aaron and Rachel seem to be the perfect fit – laughing often, affectionate, caring, smart, fun, easy going. I could go on and on, obviously! We’ve been looking forward to their wedding for a year, and I am still smiling even as I edit their collection!

Rachel and Aaron’s day was a delight because of the wonderful people involved, but it was also flawlessly beautiful. The Chicago History Museum was the site for the ceremony and reception, and provided a stunning setting, as always. I am still swooning over the gorgeous florals by Life in Bloom and Rachel’s Carolina Herrera gown. Five Grain Events planned the day to perfection, and the David Rothstein Band kept the party rocking all night. Truly, a perfect day.
