Chicago Engagement Session from Studio Finch

Love stories are the best.  That first meeting, that first date, that first look across across the table when you just know something special is taking place… I could seriously listen to tales of “how we met” all the livelong day.  And this dapper duo?  Well, their first date story is awesome.  An hour turned into ten kind of awesome that most of us only dream about.  (Seriously.)  And their e-session captured by Studio Finch? Well, it’s amazing, too.  See it all in the full gallery.

From Studio FinchOwen and Matt wanted their engagement session to be a reflection of their everyday during this time in their lives. We started off in their neighborhood, at The Cozy Noodle, where they went on one of their first dates.  From there, we went to Montrose Harbor, an amazing place to go jogging by the lake.

From the Groom… Matt and I met through Match.com (oooh, the internet), I don’t remember who contacted who first, but Matt says it was him. We sent a few cute emails to each other, and then agreed to meet for coffee a few days later. I remember it was completely empty except for us. And usually that is a little awkward, but we didn’t really mind. Matt remembers that “i was stretched across the booth like I owned the place.”  That does sound like me.  We hit it off right away, and the conversation flowed naturally.  Neither of us really wanted the date to end, so we agreed to keep it going, and we went for a walk around the neighborhood. It was July, so it was actually nice enough to walk around. I remember walking down inner Lake Shore Drive, and then eventually over to Halsted, and we ended up going into Halsted’s to get something to eat. I wish I could remember what we talked about.

We chatted and chatted, and then went back to his place, this is where it gets interesting. We put in a movie. It was the movie “Go” from 1999.  I remember thinking “I thought I was the only person who liked this movie.”

We wanted our engagement pictures to reflect this period in our lives–the city, the neighborhood we live in, the places we liked to eat, the little house we moved into.

Matt is more crafty, so really he made the little DIY bits for the engagement photos. We chose our colors together (pine green, teal, and gold).  And the end of the day it turned out to be a nice reflection of the both of us!

Chicago History Museum Wedding from Gerber + Scarpelli Photography

New Year’s Eve.  One of my favorite days of the year.  It’s fun, fabulous and, if you ask me, the perfect way to celebrate a wedding.  Which is why I may or may not have let out a little squeal of delight when I laid my eyes on this stunning Chicago History Museum affair.  (Truth: I totally did.)  Because not only is this wedding a fun-filled January 31st celebration, it’s a serious lesson in all-out glamour and sophistication, with some elegance 101 thrown in for good measure.  See it in amazing images captured by Gerber + Scarpelli Photography right here.

From Gerber… It all started when Griffin surprised Lauren by showing up at her parent’s house Christmas evening to pop the question.  Once she said yes, they decided on a New Year’s Eve wedding.  Their next year included planning, lots of crafts, and the incorporation of countless personal details into their big day. Both Lauren and Griffin were raised in the midwest, but now live in Austin Texas. They wanted their wedding to be a mix of Texas, where they met and fell in love, and their Yankee upbringing. With a ton of glam thrown in for good measure.

Lauren and her bridesmaids got ready at downtown Chicago’s Waldorf Astoria.  While there, she gave her groom a special gift: a leather bound book called “Letters to Lauren.”  She had saved all the love notes Griffin had ever wrote her and turned them into a beautiful keepsake.  After getting ready, the bridesmaids put on their custom faux-fur shawls (gifts from the bride) for some photos outside before making their way to the Chicago History Museum for the ceremony and reception.

The ceremony and reception were executed beautifully; Darcey Gerber’s planning and all the DIY elements made it a fantastic affair.  The bride and her artistic mother handmade the glitter animal escort card holders, all the table numbers, the stars down the aisle, the tassels on the bars, the tassels around the cake, the head table display, and the backdrop for the photo booth. Whew! The reception seating was both communal and intimate, with a mix of harvest tables and rounds.

Chicago Cafe Brauer Wedding from Gerber + Scarpelli Photography

Two things that make me happy?  Gerber + Scarpelli Photography and Cafe Brauer weddings.  When I see one (or both) of those names pop up on my computer screen, I know it’s going to be a very good day. (Emphasis on very.)  So when I first spotted this gorgeous traditional soiree, I swear to you, an all caps JOY consumed my body.  And I have the aforementioned lovelies, beautiful blooms from The Flower Firm and a whole lot of pretty planned by Blossom Eventz to thank.  Did I mention it was going to be a very good day?!?  Join me in the gallery for more.

From Gerber + Scarpelli PhotographyKatie and Chris tied the knot on a chilly autumn day. This wedding was truly a family affair. We met up with Katie and her ladies at the couple’s condo in Lincoln Park. The bridesmaids surprised the bride by each reading a six part note from the groom. There was not a dry eye at the end of it.

The ceremony was held at the newly restored St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Lake View. It is truly one of the most breathtaking spaces in the city. Members of the bride’s extended family provided the music for the ceremony. All nine of the couple’s nieces and nephews preceded the bride and her father down the aisle.

After the ceremony, we all hoped on the party bus and headed downtown for a few pictures. Chris is a trader, so we had some fun shooting in front of the iconic Board of Trade. On our way back north, we stopped at North Pond and snapped a few pictures in the exact spot where Chris proposed to Katie the previous year.

Cafe Brauer is one of the most sought after venues in all of Chicago. An intimate space set on the South Pond in Lincoln Park. It is a stunning example of the Prairie School of Architecture. The reception was held in the ballroom on the second floor. Over a dozen homemade cakes graced the sweets table. All were made by a close friend of the bride. The colorful cakes were as scrumptious as they were beautiful. Flower Firm provided the decor and personal flowers. The orchids have to be some of the prettiest we’ve ever seen! The evening started with a few tears and many laughs (mostly at the groom’s expense). As the meal came to an end, Final Say took up their instruments and rocked it so hard the floor shook! It was the perfect wedding. Nobody could have asked for more!

Southern Illinois Wedding at Blue Sky Vineyards from Brad Rankin Studio

I know I’ve said it a million times before, but I learn a little something new every.single.day here at SMP.  I like to call it Weddings 101, because I am constantly taking note of some amazing new venue, stunning dress or a gorgeous color combo that I didn’t even know existed.  And today’s darling lesson?  When you mix some crazy cool DIY projects with a whole lot of pink, the result is nothing short of amazing. Especially when those DIY projects happen to include fab paper goods, peony bouquets and stunning baby’s breath centerpieces.  See it all captured by Brad Rankin Studio in the full gallery.

From the Bride… When planning our wedding we knew location had to be special and mean something to us. That’s why we decided to have our ceremony and reception where we had our second date, at Blue Sky Vineyard. We envisioned more of an intimate wedding with a mixture of classic and contemporary style. So we chose the color scheme; black, grey, ivory and different shades of pink. My husband is a Graphic Designer by trade so we knew buying invitations was out of the question. Instead he designed our wedding invitations and stationery. He even included an illustration of my engagement ring and other personal details that represent our personalities on the invites.

For the wedding party attire, the maids all wore different styled short black Angelina Faccenda dresses and carried peony bouquets. The guys wore grey suits with different patterned black ties along with matching argyle socks. I didn’t want the guys to wear a traditional long stem boutonniere. Instead I had my mother make a more modern style boutonniere with just a flower head and guinea feathers. When it came to looking for my dress it was such a process. I always envisioned my wedding dress very simple and classic. After looking in three different states, I finally found the ONE. It was a simple ivory Mori Lee gown that had a small embellished flower at the waist with covered buttons down the back and on the train. I didn’t want a traditional veil, so I found a beautiful feathered flower to use in my hair and I added some Russian veil netting that I ordered from England.

For the ceremony we kept the decor very simple. The aisle was draped with white organza and pink flower balls on shepherd hooks. Over 12,000 light pink rose petals were scattered down the aisle and at the gazebo. I also had the decorators add just a couple flower arrangements on the gazebo. It was just enough decor without taking away from the beautiful vineyard setting.

The reception decor was a mixture of mercury glass, silver tapered candles, hydrangea flower balls and bunches of baby’s breath on the guest tables. I wanted lots of candles to create a soft glow for the reception. Since we were married in the middle of July, I opted to use wax LED candles everywhere instead of real candles to avoid excess heat in the room. I didn’t want a traditional wedding cake, so we opted for a cupcakes and a ruffle inspired cutting cake for the top tier. Marks Bakery did a wonderful job and executed our vision perfectly. During the reception my husband surprised me with a slideshow. He worked with both our parents to gather up old home videos and photos of us growing up. I had no idea that he was staying up late weeks before our wedding to work on this surprise for me. It was a moment I will never forget.

Our photographer, Brad Rankin, was amazing. His attention to detail and his overall aesthetic is what drew us to him in the first place. He captured all our emotions we felt on our special day. Just looking back at our photos now, it’s like I’m reliving my wedding day all over again. Because of our wonderful vendors, family, and friends, our wedding day was perfect. We were able to enjoy every moment and spend time with the ones we love the most on our big day.

Chicago Anniversary Shoot from Kristin La Voie Photography

Best idea ever?  Dusting off that wedding gown, grabbing your honey and celebrating your newlywed bliss with a little something we like to call an Anniversary Shoot.  They are awesome.  And whether it’s one, two or ten years down the road, they are always, always chock-full of some of my favorite moments. Need proof?  Take a look at this lovely session captured by the always-wonderful Kristin La Voie Photography.  It’s the breathtaking Chicago skyline meets a dreamy Vera Wang gown meets a whole lot of l.o.v.e.  See it all in the full gallery.

From the Bride… My husband and I were married two years ago, in a beautiful winter wedding in our hometown of St. Louis. While our wedding was everything we imagined and hoped for, we always wanted to take photos in our adopted home of Chicago, where we have lived and worked for the past ten years. When we decided to do an anniversary shoot in our wedding finest, I set about finding the perfect photographer. I found the amazing Kristin La Voie Photography on SMP after scouring the site and marveling at all of the amazing weddings. After our first meeting with Kristin, we knew she was the perfect choice for us. Her warm, kind and bubbly personality immediately put us at ease, and she made our photo shoot such a joy, and a truly wonderful experience. I can’t thank her enough for the beautiful images she created for my husband and I, and I only wish every day could be a photo shoot with Kristin!

Modern Chicago Greenhouse Loft Wedding by Christy Tyler Photography + Five Grain Events

Crisp, clean loft weddings get me every.single.time. I just adore them. So this Greenhouse Loft wedding captured by Christy Tyler Photography? SO up my alley. It’s understated yet perfectly refined, letting the couple in the middle of it all truly shine. Five Grain Events was on hand to make sure the entire day was beyond perfect, and one peek at the gallery and you’ll see that they succeeded and then some.

Morgan and Brady’s wedding day started for the ladies at the lovely Hotel Palomar where Andie Cumber and Livia Caporale worked their magic. Brady and his groomsmen got dapper in a gorgeous suite at Trump International Hotel & Towers. Joan, of Five Grain Events, was on hand to coordinate the day’s logistics.

Rain was a constant concern in the days leading up to that Saturday, but Brady and Morgan lucked out and were able to do their first look outside. The resulting photos, expertly captured by James and Christy of Christy Tyler Photography, really show off the glow that both the bride and groom carried all day! After the first look, the bridal party headed around town for some group shots at some iconic Chicago locations.

Morgan’s inspiration for the day was a neutral palate–nothing overly showy or trendy–and Greenhouse Loft was the perfect place for that. The blond wood, floor-to-ceiling windows, and warm lighting hardly needed anything to make it feel dressed up for a wedding. Morgan chose to line the aisle with paper poms and Pollen’s simple arrangements framed the altar. The couple wanted some unique pieces played during the processional and ceremony, and Artistrings executed their requests beautifully!

The meal was definitely one of the best parts of this occasion. FIG Catering offered guests an arugula salad with sliced fresh figs, bleu cheese and hazelnuts followed by a choice of whole roasted chicken with lemon and herbs or braised short ribs. It really felt like a meal one might prepare for a dinner party at home–only perfectly executed and without all the cleanup!

Morgan and Brady knew that their crowd would be a rowdy one, and wanted to get the dancing portion of the reception going as quickly as possible. Final Say totally rocked out the dance floor–guests couldn’t believe that they were listening to live music and not a recording!

Dessert was served buffet-style once dancing began and featured a simply beautiful cake by Amy Beck supplemented with some of FIG’s world-renowned dessert bites. It was a glorious day for all involved!

Chicago Wedding from Aaron Delesie

Everything about this windy city wedding just happens to be my cup of tea. I’m talking about those sweeping city views, layers upon layers of sparkle, and romantic details galore that add up to maybe the best wedding ever. But the only thing better than this crazy awesome day are all the vendors behind it.  Vendors like Birch Design StudioKehoe Designs, and Alexandra Kaehler Design (the super talented bride herself) who produced a wedding so flawless, you’d never EVER guess the indoor ceremony was actually a weather-based plan B. Aaron Delesie, being the photo genius that he is, captured a collection of stunning images, and you can find them all right here.

From the Bride…Spencer and I met when we were 17 years old and have been dating ever since. I dreamt of our wedding for years… I had secret folders filled with flowers and dresses saved on my computer long before Pinterest ever existed. A couple years before we got engaged I even shared this not-so-secret folder with Spencer, luckily for me he loved everything I had saved. A couple weeks after we got engaged we started bringing everything to life. The venue was the first and only one we looked at. Suggested by my husband, it fit our need to be close to the city, with our want of something that didn’t feel urban. It was perfect. Marina and her team at Birch truly helped our entire vision come to life perfectly. Being an interior designer, creating the tent felt like designing a house and I was so happy when it all came together. The day of our wedding was the most amazing day of our lives. The weather definitely didn’t cooperate for our planned outdoor ceremony but we got to dance the night away with every single person we know and love regardless!

A couple highlights from the night… When our good friend, comedian and officiant let everyone in on the secret of how Spencer truly proposed. He had always told me girls and boys couldn’t be best friends and although I disagreed, he felt strongly (for 8 YEARS!), when he went to propose, there was a note in the ring box that said “to my best friend, will you marry me?”. Following my dad’s speech, he surprised 350 guests by singing “I Will” by the Beatles (he doesn’t sing, but had taken voice lessons for 6 months prior to the wedding). And finally, Spencer and I being the very last ones to leave at 2:00am. It was too much fun to possibly leave early!

Chicago Wedding at Galleria Marchetti from Kina Wicks Photography

Sweet as they come and stylish to boot, this Chicago wedding captured by Kina Wicks Photography is really everything I love about weddings. It’s tradition and thoughtful touches, it’s a day overflowing with love and it’s a gorgeous Bride that couldn’t look happier if she tried. How could you not love every inch of that? Well I most certainly am head over heels, and you can see all the reasons why right here.

From Kina Wicks Photography…  I loved all the sweet little details from this day and of course the love, emotion and family involved.  The Ukranian ceremony at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha was like a little piece of heaven with the wreaths of leaves placed upon their heads, the beautiful music from the choir loft in the balcony and the turquoise blue ceilings.  The evening party commenced at the Galleria Marchetti with the stunning vine chandeliers lighting the tent.  Christina & Marion danced the night away to a live band who played a perfect mixture of modern songs and music from their native country.  The floral arrangements were just the icing on the cake to me… they sparkled and glistened in the candlelight and provided a beautiful pop of color.

Chicago Loft on Lake Wedding from Victoria Sprung Photography

This wedding from the talented Victoria Sprung Photography? It’s quintessential Chicago. Elegant with a side of style and a dash of fun. From Victoria Sprung PhotographyJustin and Jessica have a beautiful balance of romance and goofiness. I think this is a perfect combination. They were SO fun to work with, and were up for anything. They trusted me when I led them under some el tracks, going along with my vision of bringing out the water stains on the wall for a background texture.

We started out the day with both the Bride and Groom’s preparations at the Crowne Plaza in West Town. The hotel has a really pretty corridor where we had their ‘First Look’. We hopped in the limo, and it was off to some nearby locations to take some fun, creative portraits. On the way back to Loft on the Lake, we picked up Palmer, the Couple’s ADORABLE Pomeranian dog.

It was time for the Ceremony, and guests were treated to a warm, romantic atmosphere at Loft on the Lake. Jessica did a lot of the decor herself, and she knocked it out of the park. Their Ceremony was officiated by a friend, and was full of funny stories, heartfelt vows, and all smiles. I just gotta put this out there: I love doggie ring bearers! Though I don’t know if you could find a better behaved little guy than Palmer. He was pretty much sleeping in one of the Groomsmen’s arms, just being his adorable little self.

Cocktail hour went underway, and I was able to capture some candid moments of their guests, as well as documenting all the gorgeous details and decor in the reception room. In between courses, we heard amazing speeches…including an extremely memorable one from the Bride’s Sister. As a surprise, she had written a song about Jessica and Justin to the tune of Taylor Swift’s “Love Story”. I think you can see by the photos how much of a hit it was!

Catering was provided by Phil Stefani. Not only is their food top notch, but I always notice how wonderful and attentive the staff is. Style Matters is one of my favorite DJ companies, and Dustin did not disappoint! He had the dance floor moving all night, and it was so much fun to watch everyone go crazy.

University of Chicago Wedding from Matushek Photography

Is it awkward that I want to call these two cuties up? Probably a little, but I seriously can’t help myself. Because with just one look at their seriously stylish wedding snapped up by Matushek Photography I can just tell they might be the coolest people ever. Or at least the most adorable. Let’s just say if their wedding was a reflection of them as a couple, I want to be their best friend. See more of their amazing day here.

From Matushek PhotographyMargaret & Will were such a dream to shoot. Not only are they super adorable, but they are such good, kind people. Margaret has fabulous style, and it showed in every aspect of the day. Both her and Will work and study at the University of Chicago, so it was only fitting to have their ceremony on the beautiful campus in Hyde Park. The beautiful old architecture and lush greenery made a great backdrop. The reception was held at Quartino, a great restaurant in the heart of downtown Chicago, which had a really intimate and relaxed vibe. It was a wonderful wedding and we were so honored to be a part of it!

From Joshua Albanese PhotographyWe first met with Alison and Paul in the fall of 2011 and we felt an immediate connection with them.  Their playful and sarcastic sense of humor and the way they teased each other could in no way hide the affection and attraction they had for each other and we loved that, despite their strong personalities, their sweet sides would peek through in the most unexpected ways.  We were especially charmed with the way Paul proposed to Alison, sending her on an Easter Egg hunt through their home that led to a special purple egg nestled on a shelf among their photos that contained a gorgeous diamond engagement ring.  There isn’t a girl in the world that could resist that sweetness, and Alison responded with an excited “Yes!”

The Wit quickly became one of our favorite wedding venues, with a great downtown location and a perfect blend of eclectic and modern décor.  We found a shoji door near the restaurant that was perfect for Alison and Paul’s “first look.”  They chose to do a unique variation that relied on their senses of sound and touch, saving the actual reveal for the ceremony.  As Paul and Alison joined hands around the door and called out to each other, shaky and nervous voices became steady while they talked about the morning’s events.

With hand squeezes and words of encouragement, Alison and Paul were ready to exchange their vows.  As the musicians began their sweet melodies, Alison’s mother adjusted her daughter’s veil and gave her one more quick hug before escorting her down the aisle.  The couple was married in a touching, personalized ceremony that included a fantastic Robert Fulghum reading and – much to our amusement – anecdotes about their relationship and alter egos.

After the final blessing, Alison and Paul were pronounced husband and wife and quickly stole away to the Phoenix Lounge to enjoy a private moment together while guests enjoyed cocktail hour in the ultra-swanky rooftop lounge.  They toasted to their marriage and Alison showed off the finer details of her attire, including her something blue – a small heart patch with their names and wedding date that was sewn into the lining of her dress.

We gathered up the bridal party and snagged some of the photo booth props to take on our photo walk.  Paul and his groomsmen rocked some funky socks and Alison sported some sparkly Kate Spade heels that would make Dorothy tired of her own red pumps.

While guests were upstairs enjoying views of Chicago and Lake Michigan in the Rooftop Lounge, Jill Hankee from IC3 Events was downstairs supervising the reception decoration, setting out the Lucite name cards and helping Stemline arrange the lush pomanders and centerpieces.  Take the Cake provided a stunning 4-tier confection that fit seamlessly with Alison and Paul’s “elegant with a twist of modern” vision.

Because Alison and Paul chose to have a more intimate celebration with just close family and friends, they were able to give every detail their personalized touch and treated their guests to a delicious meal, sweet favors, and our favorite – Morning After Bags that included Bloody Mary mix, mini bottles of vodka, tabasco sauce, Advil, and water.  Best idea ever!  Glasses were raised and clinked to the heartwarming and funny toasts, and Alison and Paul shared their first dance as husband and wife before opening the dance floor for everyone to party and enjoy the views of the evening city lights.

From the Bride… My fiance just proposed to me, and Shar helped him plan everything… and I was SO SURPRISED. Everything was unbelievable! I am not one to be shocked, because I am very inquisitive (probably to the point of annoyance) but Shar helped him trick me well. Our proposal was so romantic – like something out of a movie!

Shar arranged for a photographer to ask my fiance and me to pose for a promotion for the Mystic Blue boat on Navy Pier. The photographer and assistant said that if we participated we would receive free Bulls tickets. Well, that was it – I bought it hook, line and sinker (pun intended). The photographer and assistant (decked in Mystic Blue and Official Photog gear) asked us to take a few last pictures on the Mystic Blue and we obliged. They lead us to a table display for Valentine’s Day (again a promotion for the boat), and on the table were framed pictures of me and my fiance amongst chocolate covered strawberries, framed love quotes, champagne, and roses. Next thing I knew he was down on one knee and a guitarist appeared playing one of our favorite songs! It was magical and the photographer captured everything. It could not have been more perfect!!!!

From Dabble Me This  I’m beyond thrilled to share Kristi & Luke’s adorable Chicago engagement session with you! Let me tell you, these two are made for each other. They have it all… a lust for life, each other and an amazing urban J.Crew style! To top the cake Luke searched San Francisco, New York and Texas for the perfect engagement ring! Kristi’s diamond is actually from the 1900s and I could not believe how stunning it was! Luke also mentioned the sapphires mean fidelity and are for Kristi’s eyes- which he admits is his favorite things about her.

I hope you fall in love with the details of their shoot as much as I did, I think this shoot suited them so well. Plus the light was beyond stunning and with a slight dusting of snow, it could not have been more perfect!

Salvage One Wedding from Jayne Weddings and Events

I surrender. That’s right, I officially surrender. Because this couple? They have completely out-styled me and then some (and then some more). As a Bride that initially never intended to have a big Chicago wedding, I am sure glad that she finally caved – because the day she said I do to her new (handsome) man at Salvage One might go down as one of the stylish days in SMP Illinois history. That day came to life via the visions of  Jayne Weddings and Events, and thanks to Pen Carlson we get to soak in every stylish moment right here.

From the Bride… I am not someone who ever pictured myself as a bride or even getting married.  All that changed when I met Dan, and when he asked me to marry him we started entertaining the idea of having a wedding.  Our wedding “plans” started out as a destination wedding in Kauai with just our families by our side.  They evolved from there into a big dinner for our family and friends to an actual wedding once we found Salvage One just a few blocks from our house.  We loved the venue and decided to bite the bullet and have a full on wedding here in Chicago.

“True Romance” has been my favorite romantic movie (albeit a non-traditional romance) since I was a teenager.  Our wedding theme started out as “wouldn’t that be cool to have a True Romance wedding?” and turned into us meeting Katie Sprenkle of Jayne Weddings and her falling as in love with the idea as we were.  From there the whole wedding began to unfold.  The table numbers were inspired by all the amazing outfits Alabama wore in the movie.  The custom sequin table runners were a nod to Clarence’s love of Elvis.  We had a projector showing kung fu movies and popcorn in movie theater cups was served as a late night snack.  Even our dessert buffet of pies was a nod to Alabama and Clarence’s first date.  We had comic blocks on all the lounge tables, as Clarence worked at a comic shop. Our cards box was a hot pink makeup case similar to the one Alabama carried the entire movie. The groom’s cufflinks were similar to the wedding rings from the movie. We had custom cocktail napkins made with Alabama’s handwritten note of “you’re so cool” on every one of them.

Our wedding was so much fun to plan because we just did everything our own way but worked it into the typical wedding elements.  Our wedding party walked down the aisle to Morrissey’s Break up the Family.  I walked down to the True Romance theme song, You’re So Cool by Hans Zimmer and Dan and I had our recessional to a Bad Brains song.  The bridesmaids wore leopard print heels.  Our french bulldog Toast was the ring bearer.  My yoga teacher and good friend did an incredible job as our officiant.  The whole event was both beautiful and playfully irreverent.

It’s hard to pick a single favorite element or part of the wedding planning.  The entire process was so much fun and a wonderful creative outlet.  I guess the best part would be seeing all the little projects or ideas you had on a whim come together and getting to share them with all your friends and family.  The whole thing was just so cool.

From Katie Jayne from Jayne Weddings and EventsWhen this Cass and Dan came to me with this idea I totally freaked! I watched the movie about ten times during the planning, each time finding another way to pull in something from the movie. We wanted it to have a theme but not be theme-y, we wanted it to still feel like a wedding. Have a crafty couple to work with was a dream. We were constantly trading ideas late into the night. This was one awesome wedding to work on!

Modern
From the Bride… We wanted our wedding to be artsy, creative, bold and above all, to be a representation of us. Early on, I adopted Hiroshige prints as our inspiration for our wedding day, and incorporated it all throughout our color scheme of royal blue, chartreuse, green and red. We had the blue and green flowers, a blue runner down the aisle, a modern cake with cascading and gradually fading blue flowers and even our macarons were selected for both color and taste from Vanille Patisserie. There were tons of DIY elements, mostly because I had something in mind that just wasn’t available through a vendor. I designed our invitations, programs and menus based on an asian fan motif, created our signing screen (which incorporated a few of the chosen Hiroshige prints on fabric and had a lattice for our guests to leave us notes), created and stenciled our table names from various “first’s” of our relationship (like the first basket ball game Nik ever took me to and the first opera I ever took Nik to) and put a little chartreuse description of the significance of the table name on each table (the red and chartreuse cardboard plates echoed the signature stamps on the Hiroshige prints).

Everything turned out great, and the DIY elements were done in time for our wedding, but I have to confess, we were putting together the brackets and gluing lattices on our Hiroshige signing screen on the day before the wedding, so we definitely cut it close! It was a labor of love, and in the end we were so happy everything came together the way it did. With all my perfectionist tendencies, I have to say it was great to give the control away to the event coordinator (she was so organized and the best coordinator we could have asked for!) and to let all of the vendors do what they do best (we loved our caterer). Sure there were a few changes – like one of our wedding photo shoot locations being commandeered by an Indian film shoot of all things, right outside our hotel, and improvising our first dance to make sure my train can be accounted for (ladies, please do take this into account when you are practicing your first dance!) but really, these are all great memories, and nothing I would wish differently. Everything being the whirlwind it was, I will remember the most glorious perfect mid-70’s weather in the middle of August, how I felt like a modern-day princess in my mermaid Angel Sanchez dress with the asymmetrical train, my mother’s beautiful Korean han-bok and all of her traditional accessories, how Nik made me teary with his vows, our perfect first dance to Adele’s rendition of Lovesong, and being amongst all the people we love. It was pure magic!

Whimsical

From Modern Image StudiosThe playfulness and charm of the day created such a dreamy experience.

Salvage One is one of our favorite wedding venues! The atmosphere, elegance, and quirky, charming details all lend themselves to gorgeous looking photographs. In speaking with the bride ahead of time, we knew that this wedding was going to be out of this world. The bride expressed that details shots of the food was very important to her, and we are suckers for detail shots! Probably the most unique appetizer we’ve ever come across was at this wedding– mini meat loafs in the shape of cupcakes! Seriously too cute! The couples’ dog is basically like their daughter, and so their wedding cake was made to look exactly like their French Bulldog, Jersey.

There were other dog details throughout, like the table numbers– which were plain and simple, but the concept was brilliant and edgy. And who wouldn’t want their dog at their wedding in spirit! These are the reasons that we were head over heels for this couple! Of course there was a very special photo booth with unique props, and the candy and treats were amazing. The candy buttons are a big time favorite. Even the bags of popcorn were beautiful. There was no part of this wedding that was left overlooked. It was truly a gorgeously-done event from the ground up. The building itself is enough to swoon over. Every corner of that place was a new photo op– the wall of clocks, the beautiful couches, the awesome Chicago sign outside. And add this couples’ creativity and the bride’s vintage tastes to the venue– it was such a great combo that made some truly unforgettable moments for all those loved ones of the couple. And who doesn’t want their guests appreciating every last piece of a wedding day?! The whole day seemed just like a living, breathing piece of art.

Geneva Wedding at Mill Creek from Sarah Postma Photography

A wedding inspired by wildflowers. How amazing does that sound?  Well, that’s what’s coming your way thanks to Sarah Postma Photography this morning, and it is all just as gorgeous as you can imagine. But as beautiful as the blooms may be, it’s the heart and soul in the sweet DIY touches found around every turn that will really make your heart melt – making this gallery one you simply can’t miss.

From the Bride… The inspiration for our wedding day was the wildflowers surrounding Mill Creek when Jason and I first toured the venue. It was late summer and absolutely gorgeous. We loved the idea of bringing those flowers into our ceremony and reception, so we chose all local wildflowers as our wedding flowers.

Some of the flowers were even grown in my mom’s backyard. We wanted our wedding to be personal and to tell the story of events, people and places that helped us become husband and wife. Burlap invitations from The Blue Envelop were a perfect way to invite our guests to become a part of our story. We included a snippet of our story on the invitation envelopes for guests to get a sneak peek to our wedding day. Jason and I decided early in the planning stage to name each table at the reception after a place we visited together. We included a story about each place on the tables so guests could learn more about our Love Story. Guests enjoyed going from table to table to read our story and were sometimes surprised to see their name pop up in the story along the way. For months leading up to the wedding, Jason and I created scrapbook pages of all the places we visited together to put on display at the “Welcome Table.” Our guestbook was made with empty scrapbook pages to match the display pages. We put the scrapbook pages and guest book entries into a book after our wedding. It is so fun to look at from time to time!

To go along with the personal vibe, we incorporated customized and DIY projects as much as possible. Friends and family helped us collect mason jars which were later decorated with burlap, lace and buttons from my grandmother’s collection. My bouquet included buttons from her collection and even some from my other grandmother’s wedding dress. We also used her buttons for the escort cards. My mom and grandma made the bunting that hung from the head tables, bar, candy table and lemonade stand. As part of our love story, we played tribute to our home states (Illinois and Michigan) by including only local items in goody bags for our out-of-town guests and Michigan beer at our reception. A dear friend made a bean bags set with a vintage map from each state and the bags were from our alma maters.

Since the wildflowers were the inspiration for our wedding, we wanted the reception décor to be carefully planned. I wanted to DIY all the flowers, but it seemed impossible to be a bride and florist at the same time. Our good friend Kristen France was a lifesaver and made all the bouquets, corsages and most of the centerpieces. She also set up everything on the day of the wedding. I was still insistent on arranging some of the flowers, so my mom and a couple friends helped me make about 40 flower arrangements they day before our wedding. It seemed like a perfect stress reliever to me! With the local wildflowers being lots of bright colors, I decided to have each of my bridesmaids wear shoes to match the flowers. It just happened that they were each able to wear their favorite color! It was fun to put their gifts together to match their shoes – handmade gift bags and boxes, flip flops, clutches and tote bags. I loved seeing all the colors come together on our wedding day.

Museum

John and I knew from the start that we wanted a Chicago wedding. Since we are both from the same home town in St. Charles, Illinois, this may have been a surprise to our family and friends, however, we were really looking for an experience for our guests and to have our special day in our favorite city!

There are so many incredible reception locations in the city and we had a blast doing all of the research and tours, but we knew The Chicago History Museum was it the moment we walked into the space. John and I envisioned a classic and elegant evening that reflected our personalities, and the Chicago History Museum was perfect for that. We fell in love with the beautiful chandelier in the Robinson Gallery, the history surrounding the space, the beautiful and elegant Chicago Room with black and white tile, and the stunning outdoor plaza. Plus, with so many out of town guests, it was the perfect location to show off the city that we both love!

We were so fortunate to have Lauren with LK Events keep us organized along the way and introduce us to some of the best vendors in Chicago. Being in the event planning industry myself, choosing a theme for my wedding was much more challenging than I thought – I just loved everything! Our vendors did an amazing job taking our vision of a summery, elegant, and classic wedding and making it a reality. Our colors were cream, blues, and pale pink which we incorporated in my favorite part, the flowers and décor!

Our wedding day was absolutely perfect and we are so thankful! The weather couldn’t have been better and all of the details fell into place just the way we envisioned. The highlight for me was walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing John for the first time that day in front of all of the people we love so much. Father Manny, at St. Clement Church, lead a beautiful and personal ceremony and pronounced us husband and wife, a moment we will never forget!

The wedding day was flawless from start to finish. After the ceremony, our guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the outdoor plaza of the museum while listening to music from John Sabal, a guitarist from Stitely Entertainment. They were then escorted to the Chicago Room for dinner in which the tables were assigned with classic Chicago inspired name cards. After a fabulous meal by Food for Thought catering, our guests enjoyed dancing and getting their photos taken at the photo booth. The night was topped off with Lou Malnati’s pizza and Chicago style hot-dogs!

We couldn’t have wished for a better wedding day and we thank our parents for making it possible. We were so happy to be able to share our love and commitment for one another with all of our loved ones. Our bridal party consisted of our family and best friends that mean the world to us! We are so glad we have the photos from Becky Hill and video from Keith at Poetic Productions so we can re-live the day and cherish the memories forever.
