Casual Elegance at Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum

The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum set the scene for this oh-so-lovely brunch wedding, and before you even think of diving head first into this gallery of pretty captured by T&S Hughes Photography and planned by Anticipation Events, let me just tell you it’s a certified pretty-fest. With an easy elegance and sooo much love, this post is one fine way to start your Friday. See it all here.

From Anticipation EventsMegan + Parker were married at Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in May. They had a Memorial Day weekend brunch wedding in Chicago, which if you’re as obsessed with mimosas and Bloody Mary’s as we are, then you know we were a match made in wedding heaven. We rehearsed in their downtown apartment and then they went off to dinner and caught a show at Chicago’s beloved Second City.

Sunday morning, Megan got up really early to get ready so luckily she had some serious help from their adorable daughter Olivia. Megan + Parker chose not to see each other before the wedding, but they did say hello before walking down the aisle. T&S Hughes Photography and I set them up on either end of a door outside the museum so they could squeeze hands quickly and calm each others’ nerves before we lined them up and sent them down the aisle to say “i do!” We took care of some incredibly charming details inside: vintage rentals, board games and chalkboards made this brunch casual, but still oh so sophisticated.

The dessert table got some extra special attention. Megan used to work at Milwaukee Cupcake Company so her old boss brought cupcakes down especially for the wedding. We supplemented with loads of popcorn, cookies, doughnuts and candy. Seriously, their guests had brunch and then a boatload of dessert? Genius! I loved working on this brunch wedding with Megan + Parker and celebrating with their family and friends. They were so kind, grateful and easy to be around and for all of the vendors it was a fun twist on the typical dinner reception.

Chic Chicago Adler Planetarium Elopement

If I had seen the picture of the groom helping his bride into her wedding gown before my big day, I would have thrown away any plans I had made for my wedding, booked a flight to Chicago, called up Anni Cee and tied the knot right then and there on Lake Michigan. It’s the most romantic image I’ve ever come across, and the day that followed is perfect.

From the photographer… Carmen was the epitome of a well-heeled (and well-frocked!) bride for her chic city elopement with Harry. They started the day in style at Chicago’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel (I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything as romantic as Harry taking in the sight of Carmen in her wedding dress for the first time as he helped her into it.) They had a small lakefront ceremony outside of the Adler Planetarium, with Chicago’s skyline in the background, and made a quick stop on top of the world – the Sears Tower Skydeck – as their first adventure as husband and wife.

Colorful Summer Wedding

With wintery cold spells taking over most of the country, this sunny summery affair couldn’t have come at a better time.  Filled to the brim with colorful florals from Bride’s Choice Flowers, bright pops of vibrant yellow via some crazy cool bridesmaid gowns and a sweeter than sweet hot air balloon theme, it’s the kind of day that makes you feel all warm and cozy inside… despite the zero degrees.  See every last moment captured by Ann & Kam Photography & Cinema right here in the full gallery.

From Ann & Kam Photography & Cinema… Shannon and Kevin are adventurers – world travelers who approach each new adventure with a sense of humor and a deep love for each other. They met when Shannon approached Kevin, and they got engaged when Kevin proposed on a hot air balloon ride. Yes, these two are just FUN.

Their wedding at the historic Allerton Hotel was just perfect for them. High above Michigan Avenue, their personal, emotional ceremony was followed by a Margaritaville-themed cocktail hour and a reception room as light and airy as a hot air balloon ride. We had so much fun spending the day with Shannon, Kevin and their friends and families!

Classic Chicago Engagement

You know what I really love? An e-sesh set amongst the Windy City. And while I could easily drool over Britta Marie’s captures all the live long day, what gets me even more is this sweet couple’s story. Not only are they fellow U of I alumni (Go Hawks!) but had the most darling cupcake shop engagement ever. Go pay a visit to full gallery and make sure to read it all in the bride-to-be’s words below!

From The Bride-to-be… Nick and I both grew up in Iowa about 30 minutes from each other, but it wasn’t until later into our teen years that we met. The “diamond” (the dirt filled one) is what ultimately brought us together. Nick and I met at Diamond Dreams Baseball and Softball Academy in 2004. I was there practicing with my softball team and he was working and in charge of scoring our “hits”. Little did I know he was asking my coach’s wife if I was available! Unfortunately, things did not work out and we went on to live our separate lives, BUT not for long… Fall of 2005 I took my official visit to the University of Iowa. When I finally decided to verbally commit, I walked down to the concession area to deliver the news to my high school coach. As I was talking on the phone I looked up and there was Nick standing by himself with a HUGE smile on his face! We got to talking and then I told him that I had just committed to the U of I…he didn’t stop smiling. Being that he was playing baseball and I would be playing softball, I knew we would cross paths many times throughout college and well, let’s just say that once again, the “diamond” (this time a sparkly one!) has brought us back together, forever. The rest is history! :)

The Proposal: Since my 25th birthday was a Wednesday we decided to celebrate the weekend prior with our families. We were just looking to go out for a casual dinner and maybe have some drinks after. Well, that was the plan… Around 4:30pm on Saturday, December 1st, my mom called and told me that she ordered cupcakes from Molly’s Cupcake Shop downtown Iowa City as a sort of a surprise (being that I am a total cupcakeaholic!) for my birthday, but something came up and they wouldn’t be able to make it there in time to pick them up. So, Nick and I said we would stop by on our way to dinner.

As we walk in and talk to the owner about picking up the cupcakes, she tells us that she doesn’t have the order, but they may be in the back. As she went to the back to get them, to my surprise my parents, Nick’s parents, two of his siblings and his brother’s gf come walking out yelling “Happy 25th birthday!” I was very surprised and kept thinking how sweet it was that they were there. We all got to talking and then soon after mom said, “did you really think that I was going to have you pick up your own cupcakes?” I was still a little confused, but just figured it was all for my birthday. Then my mom yells, “Well, let’s bring out the cupcakes!” There is a small hallway in the back of Molly’s so I was trying to figure out who was walking down it with the cupcakes…it immediately came to me, it was my sister!!!! I could not even believe it! WHAT WAS SHE DOING HERE!? At this point you can imagine I was bawling and shaking all at the same time. I watched her set the cupcakes on a table and then many hugs were to follow.

Finally she said, “You really think I was going to miss your 25th birthday? You should open up your cupcakes!” So, I tried to gather myself (which did not happen at all) and walked over to open the cupcake box…I opened them up and they spelled out, MARRY ME? I looked at Nicholas and he said, “I want to spend the rest of my life with you, will you marry me?” Of course I said, “YES! YES!” Right after the proposal I turned to our families and still couldn’t believe it!!! I looked at my sister one more time and Nick then told me he flew her in for the surprise! After holding the ring about 5 minutes I finally took a look at it and found out that he custom designed it! It is absolutely stunning…the entire moment took my breath away (insert sighs). It was literally the “sweetest” engagement and a moment I will surely never forget!

Chicago Engagement Pics: A few weeks before we got engaged, I had been in touch with an acquaintance from college, Britta Hundertmark, who had just started her own photography business based in Chicago about possibly taking pictures for a stylized shoot for my side styling business. After looking at her work, I was simply in awe! I simply loved all of her work. Then a few weeks later when Nick proposed, Chicago was the first city to come up so I quickly got a hold of Britta to see if she would be available to take our photos! Our anniversary is mid-September and the past two years we have planned a weekend getaway to Chicago to celebrate. We both love the city and all that comes with it, so it was a quick decision to get our pictures taken downtown Chicago. We couldn’t have asked for a better day! The weather was absolutely perfect and we had an absolute blast with Britta. We can truly say we walked away with some wonderful memories and a fabulous new friend! :) I truly think it was almost a sign that Britta got a hold of me a few weeks before we got engaged because it surely seemed like booking Britta Marie Photography was meant to be!

Classic Chicago Cultural Center Wedding

Big City Bride and Fragrant Design did Chicago proud with this classic soiree. The wedding is the kind of beautiful event that will remain stunning and relevant forever, just like the love Allori Photography captured so brilliantly.

From the beautiful bride… Sean and I met in college through mutual friends and started dating in May 2007 while we were at home for summer break. He was a senior at St. Xaiver and I was a junior at Illinois State University. We fell in love that winter and have been together ever since. Sean proposed at Notre Dame University on October 29th, 2011. The Irish were playing the Navy in football and we had a group of friends/family join us to tailgate and attend the game. While we were visiting one of the beautiful monuments “Touch Down Jesus” and taking a photo, he got down on one knee and proposed – most definitely one of the best days of our lives!

Sean and I both come from strong Catholic/Irish backgrounds and both grew up on the Northwest side of Chicago. We were very happy to incorporate the full Catholic mass at a beautiful church in downtown Chicago. The music, readings, and bagpipes at the ceremony were exactly what we wanted for our day. We had amazing family and friends to be in our bridal party and my dad walking me down the isle was especially important to me.

I could not be happier with the weather the day of our wedding, and one of my favorite moments was when my dad and I were standing outside of the church waiting to walk down isle and when the doors opened the sunlight crept right into the church and it was amazing! I was so happy to be walking down the isle and to see Sean’s face light up was one of my favorite moment. We also really loved the exchange of vows and as nervous as we were having everyone looking up at us, it was a moment we will never forget. Walking down the isle with the Shannon Rover leading us out of the church was also memorable and it was a perfect moment to finally be husband and wife!

I absolutely love fashion and everything to do with those “small” details that make such a difference. We were going for a “elegant/chic” wedding design. We wanted a larger wedding and wanted the entire pageantry of the day to show through. We agreed that we did not want the banquet style wedding that we see at most weddings we attend, but wanted something unique but keeping true to the elegance we wanted. The Chicago Cultural Center was the perfect spot!

We always knew we wanted our wedding in downtown Chicago. Sean and I both grew up on the Northwest side of Chicago, but spend a lot of our time downtown in the heart of the city. We were so lucky to be able to stay and have our wedding in such a special spot. We were also lucky enough to photos in some of the best spots to show off the city view on the beautiful day we had – it was perfect! The Cultural Center was absolutely breathtaking and I could not believe all of the compliments we received after our wedding. The entire day was incredible and we could not be happier with how everything worked out!

DIY Wedding at Bloomingdale Golf Club

Fact: when DIY details and romantic moments combine, it’s a really good day here at SMP.  The kind of day where you sit back, relax and soak in one beautiful moment after another from the talented Ann & Kam Photography & Cinema.  Because this is the kind of wedding that deserves your full attention – from the soft pink hues to the peony-filled blooms from Fabbrini’s Flowers to the breathtaking Bloomingdale Golf Club setting.  See it all right here in the full gallery.

From Ann & Kam Photography & Cinema… We knew that Katie and Jon were special when we got together for their engagement session. That day started out rainy and gloomy, but these two were so cheerful and easy-going that in the end we were actually happy it rained! That’s just how Katie and Jon are together – gracious, kind, thoughtful, and perfect for each other. They are two kind and gentle souls that just make everybody around them happy.

Katie and Jon’s wedding was just as sweet and charming as they are. Katie is a teacher, and their wedding tied this in with a vintage pastel theme. Light pinks and blues were used throughout the days in the delicate floral arrangements and detail elements. The reception tied in Katie and Jon’s love of reading with stacks of books creating charming centerpieces, and words spelled out with scrabble letters served as table names. Katie and her mom created most of the decorative elements themselves, including the centerpieces, chalkboard signs, and escort cards.

New Years Eve W Hotel Chicago Greek Wedding

Out of control gorgeous might be how I’d describe this bride (side note: does she not look astonishingly like Lea Michele?). And her wedding day? Just as beautiful. Stacy Able Photography captured the New Years Eve fête and it’s just the think to put you in the New Year state of mind!

From the stunning bride… Bobby and I decided to get married on December 31, 2012 because New Year’s Eve is our favorite holiday!

We chose the W City Center in Chicago, Illinois because it is our favorite hotel to stay at; in addition, the grand ballroom is neutral colored which was my number one request. We also fell in love with the old and new world vibe that the hotel entails.

As far as decor, I knew I wanted an elegant and neutral color scheme. Being that it was New Year’s Eve, our colors consisted of silvers, blacks, and whites. Since I am an English major and enjoy reading, we decided to add stacks of books to each centerpiece. Not only did they add height, but they also added a personal touch. We also added antique clocks to each centerpiece to symbolize the changing of time and they all buzzed in unison during the transition into 2013. We are thrilled with our decision to have had a New Year’s Eve wedding which marks a new beginning for everyone!

Fulton’s On The River Wedding

When modern meets traditional at the ever-wonderful Fulton’s On The River, this, my friends, is exactly what happens.  A drop-dead gorgeous love fest featuring a sophisticated color palette (hello black and white), lush (+ crazy amazing) florals from Chalet Floral and ombre details a plenty.  In other word, it’s the epitome of awesome and you can see it all captured beautifully by Ann & Kam Photography & Cinema right here in the full gallery.

And a little something special from Ann & Kam Photography & Cinema?  Yes, please.

From Ann & Kam Photography & CinemaSpending the day with Darcy and Todd pretty much made us feel like the luckiest people in the world. Darcy and Todd are both such kind, thoughtful, people that they are an absolute pleasure to be around. They enjoyed every moment of their wedding day just as it was, undeterred by a little rain and a little Chicago traffic. Their wedding day was absolutely perfect just as it was.

Darcy and Todd started the day at the JW Marriott, getting ready surrounded by friends and family. Darcy chose a sophisticated black and white color palette, with carefully thought out ombre details. The hangers for the bridesmaid dresses were decorated with carefully selected ombre ribbons, ranging from light gray to black. The bridesmaid bouquets and groomsmen’s ties were also ombre with each bouquet and tie in a different shade of gray! Finally, the cake was a beautiful white to black ombre cake by West Town Bakery. The day also brought in a “Chicago” theme with a sleek skyline design created for the invitations.

Darcy and Todd exchanged gifts before they saw each other, each revealing that they knew the other perfectly with Darcy choosing a Movado watch for Todd and Todd choosing a Louis Vuitton for Darcy!

They held their first look in the grand hallway of the JW Marriott, and then we took off with the bridal party and families for photos around the city. In the afternoon we arrived to Fulton’s on the River for an elegant ceremony. Elegant Event Lighting softened the urban space of Fulton’s event room with beautiful white draping, and Chalet Floral brought white birch logs from Michigan to create a white, textured, setting.

After the ceremony, guests stepped outside to the patio on the river for cocktails as the room was converted into a reception space. Chalet Floral hung an amazing birchbark and floral display above the head table, and the room was accented by beautiful lighting designs that reflected Darcy and Todd’s city theme. This theme was also carried into the seating chart, which used a map of Chicago’s “El” line and stations to list the tables.

We couldn’t imagine a more perfect day for this perfect couple!

Holiday Shoot at Ide Christmas Tree Farm

If you are looking for last minute ways to really spruce up your festivities this week, you’ve come to the right place. Because this gorgeous shoot from Amanda Hein Photography is overflowing with fabulous ideas to deck your halls. With florals from Petal Play Design, design from Violet & Pearl Vintage Revival, paper by Penelope Press and some stunning chalkboard art from Reenie Rose – this gallery is bursting at the seems with pretty. See it all here.

From Violet & Pearl Vintage RevivalThe idea of this shoot came after finding an image of a 12 point buck at dawn in a California forest. It got us thinking of nature; its most perfect offerings for a gorgeous yet effortless setting . A Northern California feel, where the sun shines for the Holidays and green remains all around you. Nature would be the main ingredient and we would lightly sprinkle the top with lovely blooms, mouth watering desserts and this couples love.

We wanted somehow to have the beautiful buck be a part of the shoot but that proved to be a difficult task! When we found a box of naturally shed antlers at an estate sale the ideas rushed in and problem solved!

The chairs where crafted by weeks end; And then of course it would not be Christmas with out a little pop of red. Our lovely red vintage dresser (Scarlett) would be the perfect stage for Toni’s Patisserie amazing sweets. Everything just fell into place after that with the collaboration of our incredible team. Flawless paper goods from Penelope Press , swoon wordy blooms from Petal Play Design, hand crafted signs from Reenie Rose and the amazing images that Amanda Hein Photography captured wrapped it all up in the most beautiful Holiday gift! We hope our shoot inspires you to let nature host your wedding.

From Ann & Kam Photography & Cinema… Megan and Niko are two of the sweetest, most thoughtful people we have ever met. We were humbled and delighted to capture their wedding day, and we are so happy that two such nice, warm, and amazing people have found each other. On top of that, Megan and Niko’s wedding was beyond charming. We love shooting backyard weddings because you can really feel the warmth of a family when they are in their own home. Megan and Niko both got ready in Megan’s family’s home, and Megan gave Niko the most amazing gift of a journal that she started writing when they got engaged. The ceremony was held in a tent in their yard, and we shot all of their portraits in their beautiful space as well. Megan’s family put so much love into decorating their ceremony, from the custom signs, to the wildflower arrangements by Megan’s sister, to the beautiful pergola that they were married under.

Megan and Niko incorporated a “tying the knot” theme. This began with the save the dates, which included a piece of rope tied in a knot. During the ceremony, Megan and Niko actually tied a rope into a knot together. At the reception, the place settings included a thank you note with a delicate string tied into a knot holding it all together.

The reception at the Kenilworth Club was just charming beyond belief. The beautiful lighting by Elegant Event Lighting, and the personal touches like the polaroid guest book made it feel personal and intimate. Megan’s mom made the most amazing dessert table we have ever seen. She decorated hundreds of unique cookies that tied in Megan and Niko’s lives – including a drum set for Niko and yoga cookies for Megan! To top it off, Niko is an amazing musician, and took the stage to play drums at his own wedding. It was an amazing evening for a wonderful family.

From the Bride… Our ‘perfect wedding’ vision honestly included just each other and the people we love most. We wanted our wedding to feel very personal, earthy, rustic and simple.

The majority of our wedding was DIY. My father made the wooden platform we were married on. My sisters made all the signs and flower arrangements. My mother made the cookies and orchestrated the sweets table. The family prepared all the mason jar decor. Everything written from our ‘Save the Dates’ to our invitation, wedding programs, place cards, menus and welcome bag notes were designed and printed by us. Basically everything was DIY besides the centerpieces, bouquets and lighting at the reception. We are a creative bunch and had an absolute blast!

Our most memorable memory from the wedding were the moments leading up to seeing each other and then finally seeing each other :) Our first dance was to ”You Can Close Your Eyes” -Brooke Fraser Version (featuring William Fitzsimmons)

The appetizers were a mix of fun and fresh favorites including Mini Sliders, Mini Mushroom & Grilled Cheese Sandwiches and Veggie Spring Rolls. Our first course was a Watermelon and Feta Salad with Golden Beets. The three entrée choices were a Pan Seared Frenched Breast of Chicken,
Braised Beef Short Rib or Savory Buckwheat Crepes. To finish, we had wedding cake and a very extensive 18 foot long Sweets table!

We are incredibly thankful and lucky to have the unconditional love and support of our amazing family and friends. In strengthening who we are as individuals, they have helped build the beautiful love we have for one another. As we look back on the most extraordinary day of our lives we are overcome with gratitude. The memories we created with each other and the ones we love most will be cherished forever.

Emerald Inspired Photo Shoot

As we say start to say goodbye to 2013, we also start to say goodbye to our gorgeous Pantone color of the year – emerald. Boy is she a beauty. But thanks to Jennifer Kathryn Photography we are sending her out in style. Serious style. With florals from Dilly Lily, design by Reenie Rose, planning by Lovebird Events, linens from BBJ Linen and stationery from Nico & Lala – I think it’s safe to safe emerald is enjoying a proper send off. See it all here.

From Jennifer Kathryn Photography...Inspired by Pantone’s 2013 color of the year, Emerald Green, Loreen Hospodar of Reenie Rose, Meghan Andalman of Lovebird Events, and Jenn Gaudreau of Jennifer Kathryn Photography designed this romantic rehearsal dinner with a masculine edge.

The shoot took place at The Boarding House, an on-trend restaurant in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. The restaurant’s existing décor – patterned wallpaper, a mounted deer head and a chandelier made entirely of wine bottles – became prominent sources of inspiration in our design.
The focus of our tablescape was a recreation of the restaurant’s dramatic wine bottle chandelier. The installation of cut wine bottles, created by Reenie Rose, mimicked the ceiling and filled the center of each farm table. Christine Noelle of Dilly Lily designed bunches of all white floral paired with mercury glass votives to compliment the piece and soften the overall look and feel.

Custom menu cards and table numbers featured a graphic diamond pattern and a silhouette of a deer head, taken directly from the walls of the restaurant. Additional table elements included Emerald Green charger plates and napkins from BBJ Linen, custom menu cards and table numbers from Nico & LaLa and a hand-painted runner with monogram by Reenie Rose. A “Scotch & Sweets” Bar featured chocolates from Veruca Chocolates, a monogramed cake by Elysia Root Cakes and a bourbon selection from the bar.

Our bride wore a short white dress from Bella Bridesmaid. Her bridesmaids were accented in Emerald Green dresses, also from Bella Bridesmaid. The groom and groomsmen were dressed in JCrew. Hair and make-up were provided by Nika Vaughan Bridal Artists. “An Evening In Emerald” was captured by Jenn of Jennifer Kathryn Photography.

From the Bride…Nelson and I met through my college roommate, his sister, and started dated long distance traveling back and forth from Memphis and Chicago. Our long-distance relationship continued for over two years until Nelson made the move to Chicago. It was in the Windy City that we began to build our life together, experiencing as much of it as we possibly could, and easily making Chicago our home. Three years later Nelson picked up the engagement ring he had designed on his way home from work and immediately proposed on Oak Street Beach. From there the wedding planning began!

Our vision for our wedding day was simple. We wanted an intimate setting where our friends and family could be relaxed, have fun, and most importantly have a smile on their faces from the moment they walked into the venue until they woke up the next morning. I think we more than succeeded because not only did both our mothers tell us that they had never had more fun in their entire lives but also many of our friends and family thanked us for steering away from the norm and making our wedding day uniquely us in almost every detail. We choose a yellow and gray color scheme because, well, if you stepped foot into our apartment you’d know I love yellow and gray. Then when I saw the amazing bridesmaids dresses at Jenny Yoo, in the perfect mustard yellow, there was no going back. We also decided to work in a Chicago theme since most of our guest were from out of state (we had friends and family from over 20 states) and we wanted to take the opportunity to highlight some of our favorite things about the City we call home.

During the planning process I quickly learned that I got my DIY gene from my amazing mother. While I concentrated on designing and coordinating of all our stationary details, with the help of a family friend, my mom got on her sewing machine! She made robes for all my bridesmaids, flags for the ringbears to carry down the aisle, even Mr. and Mrs. pillows for our seats, just to name a few! By the end, almost every detail was handmade by myself or a loved one. Even Nelson’s bow-tie!

The wedding and entire weekend were perfect thanks to our amazing family, friends, and vendors! Looking back at the pictures is so much fun and instantly puts that huge smile right back on my face!

Lincoln Park Proposal

You know what makes me happy?  A sweeter than sweet proposal.  A sweeter than sweet proposal set against a breathtaking Windy City backdrop featuring one seriously adorable duo, the fabulous stylings of CityGirl Weddings and a whole lot of l.o.v.e.  It’s beautiful decor from Life Made Pretty meets happily ever after and you can see it all captured by the amazing Ann & Kam Photography & Cinema right here in the full gallery.

From Ann & Kam Photography & Cinema… I am so excited to share the prettiest proposal we have ever seen! When Jim started planning how he would propose to Autumn, he knew just where to do it. Though they currently live on opposite sides of the country, in a few months they will be meeting in the middle with a move to Chicago. Their new home seemed like the perfect place to surprise Autumn with the perfect proposal.

It didn’t take long, however, for him to realize that planning something special from across the country wouldn’t be easy. Jim enlisted the help of CityGirl Weddings to help him create something truly special. Shar from CityGirl brought in some amazing partners, including Life Made Pretty, who provided the gorgeous florals and the perfect, romantic, setup. It was truly like a dream, one of the most romantic proposals we have ever seen! We were absolutely blown away!

Jim and Autumn started out with dinner at North Pond restaurant. As they finished, they walked up through Lincoln Park where they were serenaded by a guitar player, and on to this romantic setting where Autumn found a bottle of champagne and a personal poem that Jim wrote just for her. Jim got down on one knee, and of course, Autumn said yes!

It’s hard to look at this wedding and not be happy. I would go as far as to say it’s practically impossible. It’s filled to the brim with whimsy and fun, not to mention one pretty color palette, making every image snapped up by Rachael Schirano a pure joy to peruse. Lucky for all of us, the fun continues right here in the full gallery.

Whimsical

From the Bride…Ryan and I met for drinks one night after exchanging a few silly messages about our favorite candy back and forth on a dating site. After a few hours of banter about our families, work, and music, I left with a huge smile on my face, knowing I had to see him again. We both immediately noticed how comfortable we felt together, like we had known each other forever. A year and half later Ryan proposed to me downtown Chicago in front of the Chicago theater, my friends and family, and a hoard of surprised tourists on the sidewalk.

As soon as Ryan and I got engaged we knew we wanted to get married at Bloomington Country Club, because it’s Ryan’s home town and the club always looks so beautiful in the summer. We chose shades of purple and pink for our colors, because I love bright colors and felt they were the perfect colors for the transition from Summer to Fall since we were getting married over Labor Day weekend.

Ryan and I love to be silly and laugh so we wanted to make sure there was an element of fun throughout the wedding. We did this, for example, by finding Mario and Peach from Super Mario Bros. for our cake toppers on Etsy and using giant purple balloons in our photos. Ryan is admittedly a comic book nerd, so all of the groomsmen wore different superhero masks for their entrance into the reception and the girls wore bright pink bows on their heads, which were a hit with all the ladies being passed around to each guest all night. Ryan’s love for comics was also integrated into our Save the Date’s designed by our friend Colleen Clark, who is a graphic designer in Bloomington. She designed them to look like a comic strip and we had a great time shooting the pictures of Ryan pretending to save me from an oncoming train. He is my own personal superhero :)

Ryan and I aren’t very traditional so we kept our ceremony short and sweet, but full of meaning. We wrote our vows expressing our love; mine included the fact that Ryan is able to make me laugh every single day and feel supported no matter what. Ryan recited Adam’s Sandler’s “I want to grow old with you”, which immediately made me smile and relax my nerves, something he is always able to do. To honor Ryan’s Irish heritage and wanting to do something unique, we incorporated a Celtic tradition called “hand fasting” into our ceremony. Our hands were wrapped in silver and ivory cord to signify our unity bound forever by our vows.

When planning the overall look for the wedding I went with more contemporary designs choosing chevron and ikat to be incorporated into our invites and signage at the wedding. I worked with Courtney Callahan in Chicago to design every element of the invitations, which was really fun. I used non-traditional wording to make sure people knew right from the beginning this wouldn’t be your typical country club wedding. The ombre purple chevron design from the invites was including on all of our signage as well.

For the tables, I chose silver and white chevron napkins and had an ikat table sign made to pull in the design from the invites. We also created a simple menu using purple and pink font to complement the bright pink hydrangeas in the centerpieces. I love mercury glass so I scoured all the craft stores to collect as many mercury glass votives I could find and scattered them over all of the tables.

Another favorite part of the wedding planning was the dessert buffet. I love dessert and I especially love pie so I was determined to offer a handful of delicious choices. We had three amazing cakes made by Sugar Mama in Bloomington. Basically the only reason we had three cakes is simply because I couldn’t choose which decoration I liked the best! The hot pink ombre two-tier cake not only looked gorgeous, it tasted amazing. The options were definitely a great decision since all the guests piled their plates high with dessert with all three cakes and 24 pies being consumed by the end of the night!

We decided to offer two signature cocktails to serve at the wedding with names that represented significant events in our relationship. “Cleo’s Cooler” was a delicious strawberry mojito named after the bar we went to on our first date. “State & Lake Sipper” was a long island iced-tea named after the intersection in Chicago where Ryan proposed to me. Anyone who knows me, knows that I don’t drink anything without a straw, so we bought lavender and white striped straws to top them off.

Our overall goal was to plan a wedding that represented both of us, with a contemporary and whimsical aspect, that still felt classy and put together. Everything at the wedding was the result of our ideas and since we helped design everything, it felt very personal. It was an amazing day that we will never forget!

Chicago Wedding Inspiration Shoot

I feel this chilly December day calls for some inspiration, don’t you agree? Well lucky for all of us, For the Love of It sent over a shoot so stunning you might even forget about the temps outside. It’s filled to the brim with lovely florals from StemLine Creative and drool-worthy table decor from Two Sisters Event , so it’s safe to say after taking a peek at this gallery, your day will surely be inspired. See it all here.

From For the Love of It… For this shoot we were inspired by Chicago’s skyline. We began by seeking out romantic corners of the city for our couple to celebrate their love. Through the hustle and bustle, crowds, noise and towers of steel, Chicagoans and those who love the city always manage to find surprising places of privacy, comfort and style. We began at Saint Mary of the Lake on the North Side which provides an Old World, European charm, and the perfect setting for these lovers to share a meal. We wanted the shoot to convey the elegance of the city, so we styled the groom in a classic, fitted tux with peaked lapels, provided by Bonobos of Chicago, and the bride in several stunning dresses from Macherie Bridal Boutique.

The sweetheart table was inspired by the harsh angles of the city skyline contrasted with the softness of new love. Heavy brushed metal silverware mixed with metal vases, and metallic splashed mercury glass, is offset by the assortment of white chocolates, white chocolate truffles, and Mexican Wedding Cakes (the small butter cookies dusted in powdered sugar), as well as the soft blush table overlay. We used this overlay instead of a runner to give the table some soft color while allowing us to retain the big city formality that a floor-length, white tablecloth provides. The vases and candles, which formed a runner of sorts that filled the middle and length of the table, were made from different kinds of glass and metals that varied in dimension, mimicking the city that towered around us. We were able to create a similar effect with the place settings and chocolates as well. The height and texture of the different plates and glassware, the metallic charger, and the arrangement of chocolates and cookies all helped to provide texture and dimension to the skyline we were creating. Finally, the ornate-backed, dark wood chairs tied the elegant table together with the backdrop of the old stone cathedral.

Where else to finish the shoot off than an amazing panorama of the city’s skyline at sunset? We shot from the rooftop patio of a private residence right in the heart of the city. It was important for us to find a location that was right in the city, not just viewing the skyline from outside of town. Looking out from one side of the patio provided views of Lake Michigan and Millennium Park, while turning the opposite way showed off the two iconic antenna of the Willis (Sears) tower, one of the tallest buildings in the United States. Our couple drank a sparkling rosé, which again helped to add a soft contrast to the rigid city skyline while portraying the elegance of Chicago with their classic gold rimmed champagne coupes; the best way to end a beautiful day in the big city.

Cantigny Park Wedding

When a stunning park setting and an adorable bride and groom come together for a couple of “I do’s,” it’s a beautiful, beautiful thing.  The kind of affair, in fact, that you only see in fairytales… or those uber-romantic movies.  So to say that we were just a tad bit excited to dive into every last gorgeous detail of this stunning day captured by Kina Wicks is, well… one serious understatement.  And the gallery of drop-dead gorgeous images?  Beyond breathtaking.  Join me there for so much more.

From Kina Wicks Photography… Kelly and John had a day that was flawless. They got ready on different floors of John’s parents’ home, and the excitement was palpable. You can see the excitement in the cool photo of the bridal party on different floors of the house! It was taken before the bride and groom had seen each other yet and was such a fun idea they had. Kelly & John have such a nice mixture of being best friends and truly obviously still crushing on one another! I loved the little ways that they show love and respect to one another. When they exchanged love notes to each other during their first look, they were generous enough to share the words with me ahead of time… my favorite quote was one of John’s… “A lifetime together lies shortly ahead.” I know he means it. Their day reflected their beautiful, quiet, mature relationship at Cantigny Park in Wheaton, IL. The setting along with the people who surrounded them gave them a wedding they will always cherish.

Chicago Lakefront Engagement From Alyssa Rosenheck Photography

If you’re not the kind of person who gets along with the cold weather so well, this Chicago engagement session on Lake Michigan might just change your mind. The bright wintery whites are enticing, and Alyssa Rosenheck Photography captured them in a way that could make any summer girl trade in her bikini for a pair of snow boots (as long as they come with that sparkly canary diamond, right?).

From the photographer… I am so excited to share my fall engagement images with you of this beautiful couple in Chicago. The weather was magical and Brian + Alexandra were so excited to capture their love and their new engagement. This couple is super stylish with the soon to be bride’s Christian Louboutin Fall boots and estate engagement ring. It’s the largest yellow diamond I have seen. Her fiancé looks like he walked out of a J crew catalogue and I was so thrilled to be part of their Chicago Session and capture their love and beauty on the lake!!

From Kristin La Voie Photography… Our stunning bride Tarah describes the wedding theme as Midsummer Night’s Dream with decor full of fairies and butterflies, lace, baby’s breath, and rustic outdoorsy elements. The gorgeous mismatched pink bridesmaids dresses, the elegant florals and baby’s breath in all the girls’ hair, the kissing balls lining the aisle, and the old skeleton keys on all the tables and in the escort table were so thoughtfully made and executed perfectly. I literally felt like I had stepped into a fairytale with the most beautiful and down to earth couple on their wedding day. Tarah was the most stunning bride I have ever seen, and the choice of ThunderHawk Golf club was an excellent choice for this Orange County, CA couple!

Volkening Heritage Farm Wedding from You Me Photography

Pretty little affairs like this are exactly the reason I love farm weddings.  Why I go a little crazy for a big, red barn and rustic meets romantic details every which way you turn.  Maybe it’s the Montana girl in me… or maybe it’s just because this is a day that is just soooo darn pretty.  Either way, you can guarantee I’ll be spending every last spare second of my Friday swooning over all of the beautiful details captured by You Me Photography right here in the full gallery.

From You Me Photography… This was the wedding type that every photographer wishes to get the chance to capture. I felt in love with this young, great couple and every little detail that you could spend hours on admiring.
