Florida Weddings

We’ve been known to go a little crazy for an adorable duo here at SMP, so when Caroline Nicole Photography sent along this sweeter than sweet Malabar engagement session, well.  We had ourselves a little party.  Because if anything deserves a fab celebration, it’s a beyond breathtaking day of soon-to-be married bliss, especially when that day includes a dashing firefighter, a stunning bride-to-be and moment after moment of pretty.  Care to bask in a whole lot of lovely?  Join us in the gallery for more.

From Caroline Nicole Photography… Joe is a firefighter, and so he and Caitlin wanted to tie that in to their session… so we shot some of the photos at a park next to the station, and the rest in the station itself.  Joe and Caitlin were such an easy-going and fun couple to work with, that even the fact that the skies threatened rain didn’t faze them a bit!

We are making our way through this oh-so-pretty day, and there is still so much gorgeous on the agenda. Like this darling farm wedding as seen through the lens of Elizabeth Davis that just happens to be filled with style and gorgeous blooms and pretty details – which makes us all weak in the knees over it as SMP. It’s the perfect combination of style and sweetness, and you can see every bit of it right here!

From the Bride… I can honestly say that our wedding was the best day of our lives. There have been countless times that I have longed to go back and do it all over again. “Epic” is the word we use to describe March 18th. In our eyes, nothing could have been better. I have always been a firm believer of short engagements. I was ready to marry Rob the moment he proposed in December. He and I love the outdoors and the fresh air, so from the beginning we knew we wanted an outdoor ceremony. I am currently in pharmacy school, so summer was really the only option. The catch was a summer wedding outside in Florida would be miserable. I had always imagined a spring wedding, so we bumped it up to March (my spring break) — which meant three months to plan a wedding. I knew right of the start that it would be possible, because I had three amazing people around me that I trusted so very much. First, my mother, who is amazing. She has worked as a florist and understands weddings and what our priorities would be. Second, my florist and friend Amy Fretto at The Conservatorie in St. Augustine. I could have given absolutely no direction to Amy, and knew I would love every part of it. She was phenomenal. Then there are my sisters: Helen (my sister) and Kate (my sister-in-law).  They understand my style and taste so well, which helped tremendously when decisions had to be made quickly.

My mum has always said one the most important things to do when throwing a wedding is to take care of your guests. Some have traveled hundreds of miles to be there on your special day, so it your responsibility to make sure they are well taken care of. The best way we knew how to do this was to serve incredible food. With Rob’s southern roots and my British heritage, we wanted a southern menu full of shrimp of grits and biscuits done with a classic style. Puff n’ Stuff was the company that we hired for this.They immediately put me at ease over all the many details of the big day. The things I would forget, I knew they would remember, and they did just that.

Photography is something that was very important to Rob and me. We wanted someone that would capture the essence of the day in its natural form. I have known Elizabeth Davis since college and have seen her grow into the outstanding photographer that she is. I had been in weddings that she had shot and loved the presence she brings. She knew when to be there and when to be invisible. It was so exciting to finally see the images she had captured, because I honestly didn’t remember what she had shot. She did a wonderful job capturing not only the details of the day, but our spirit as a couple. March 18th was a perfect day, thanks to the help of all the amazing vendors and my family. Rob and I were true to ourselves and focused on what is really important: the covenant we made before the Lord to live our lives together, loving and serving each other.

From Kt Crabb Photography… From New England to across the world, these two have been in love for over five years. Hannah is pursuing a fashion degree in NYC so you knew her sense of style would play well into the attire of the evening. David spent many months studying abroad, and although long-distance brought its challenges, their relationship stood the test. And flourished. Upon returning to America, Hannah greeted David in San Francisco. It was there that he asked for her hand in marriage and there that they got their inspiration for their day. With traveling an exciting passion of theirs, they incorporated places they had been and places they hope to go. It was a wedding focused on the adventure ahead.

From Captured Photography by Jenny… These two were high school sweethearts. During the session, Melanie kept talking about how awesome it was that she and Matt have shared so many big moments together already… prom, graduation, 18th birthdays, 21st birthdays, college, first jobs, etc. Now they are engaged and looking forward to spending the rest of life’s moments together. They love spending time by the ocean or on the ocean, so we headed over to the pier in Juno Beach for a picnic and fishing. Melanie hand-made all of the little details herself, including the personalized basket, tumblers, signs, and more.

You know we like to kick off the work week with a whole lot of pretty, so when the ever-fabulous Yvette Price Events sent along this sweeter than sweet Boca Grande affair, we knew it was the perfect Monday morning treat.  I’m talking a too-cute-for-words bride and groom, a ceremony that will take your breath away (literally) and a whimsical meets rustic vibe that is crazy gorgeous in every.which.way.  All snapped up in pretty images by the oh-so-wonderful team of Ashlee Addison, Mike Wolanin and Morgan Matters, this, my friends, is one SERIOUS love-fest.  See it all right here.

From Yvette Price Events… Back in 2003, after his freshman year in college, Tim was asked by his friend and fraternity brother Todd to join him for dinner with a group of 11 young ladies that Todd had gone to high school with. Not wanting to be the only man in the group, Todd invited Tim, and Tim eagerly accepted. Tim however had no idea that he was heading to a dinner that would eventually alter his future path. There, he met Kilee for the first time. Kilee, a recent high school graduate, was heading to her freshman year at the University of Indiana, while Tim was entering his second year of college at Miami of Ohio. People say, “Timing is everything,” and for this delightful couple this could not be truer! Since their reunion in 2007, Kilee and Tim remain devoted to each other, their families and friends.

In March 2011, with the help of Kilee’s immediate family, Tim flew down to Boca Grande, Florida, for a very special proposal. During that same weekend, the couple decided Boca Grande and Gasparilla Island would be the perfect backdrop for their romantic, shabby chic destination wedding. Throughout the last four years, the couple has enjoyed countless ventures in diverse places, yet Boca Grande seems to be among the couple’s favorites. For Kilee in particular, Boca Grande has endearing memories of family vacations and numerous hours spent climbing the canopy of banyan trees with her siblings, which is yet another reason she chose this iconic street on the island as her backdrop for her nuptials. Kilee’s ONE and ONLY must have was that she had to get married on Banyan Street under a gorgeous crystal chandelier, surrounded by rustic elements, welcoming flowers and, of course, the canopy of banyan trees dripping over the entire street. And with the help of some amazing vendors, we were able to pull it off!

I am sure that I have seen the images from this very wedding in my dreams and I truly thought images so magnificent could only be real in my wedding imagination. It was not until I saw these real-life photographs from the oh-so-talented and lovely Tonya Beaver Photography that I became a true believer in what are some of the most gorgeous bridal portraits I’ve ever seen. Plus, this celebration’s honey and yellow themed sweets and treats were perfectly appropriate for a fête taking place at the Honey Lake Plantation in Greenville, FL. From Tonya Beaver Photography… I arrived to meet the girls and immediately noticed the themes of honey and yellow for this Honey Lake Plantation wedding. The girls were dressed in yellow, and their flowers incorporated more soft yellow. Unfortunately, it rained the majority of their wedding day so we were unable to get certain outdoor shots, but we made the best of it, using a gorgeous, all-white room and wrap-around porch. For the boys’ photos, I hopped in a bus with them, and we went down to a certain “man area” on the property — a building made mostly of wood, with antlers on the walls and a crocodile coming out of the coffee table.  It was a perfect spot for man photos.

Leading up to the chapel for the ceremony were lots of little wooden signs the couple had made. Once inside the doors, there was a chalk board with Instagram instructions, lots of photos of the couple and very subtle aisle markers. This chapel needed very little decor. Actually, rumor has it that the stained glass is THE oldest in the state of Florida! One of the couple’s friends played and sang “Marry Me” by Train as Lisa’s father walked her down the aisle. It was a breathtaking moment. Lisa’s father is a pastor, so he walked her down the aisle, then traded with Lisa’s brother-in-law at the altar. So not only did he get to give his baby girl away, but he also got to perform their ceremony. After the ceremony and a few family photos indoors, the rain stopped for a short time … enough to hit all the spots Lisa had hoped for her formal photos. She and Brad were such troopers, enduring the wet air and mud on the dress. 

The wedding party was introduced into the reception, and they all danced the night away with friends and family. There were tears and a LOT of laughs. Again, Lisa played up the honey theme all throughout the day with the candy bar and yellow throughout the decor. We even got to sneak out for five minutes to take some night-time photos with Honey Lake lit up behind us. Once the reception was over, Lisa and Brad ran through a tunnel of sparklers and hopped in Brad’s fully-restored ’69 Camaro SS. A perfect ending to a perfect day.

I had the hardest time putting this wedding together for you today. Why? Because it’s TOO beautiful. The soft pretty colors paired with pops of gorgeous. The photographs by KT Merry that are subtle and yet heartbreakingly sweet and lovely. So beautiful that I secretly want to order a few for myself despite the fact that I’ve never met the bride or groom. And the details. Oh the details. Just so pretty, so organically beautiful. I simply couldn’t figure out a way to do this stunning wedding justice. From the Bride… Justin and I met while attending Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. I remember thinking he had really cute shoes and lovely brown eyes. :) We became fast friends, and over the course of a year and half, we became best friends. In 2005, we both finally had the guts to admit to each other that we were both incredibly in love. I remember the exact moment we decided to be together — it felt like I had just made the most important decision of my life, and I was completely and totally, happy. We supported each other through three HUGE moves back and forth across the country. Supporting each others’ hopes and dreams, failures and accomplishments. Then, finally deciding after six years together to make things official, Justin proposed to me on a beach in Seattle on Feb. 25, 2011, with our German Shepherd, Charlie, and my mother and sister looking on. It was perfect. Justin is my absolute best friend, confidant and soul mate. He makes me laugh every day and brings absolute joy and happiness to my life. I’m so incandescently happy to now be his wife.

From the Bride… Kevin and I met when he moved from Arizona to Florida. I was working at a furniture store in Orlando, and he was a manufacturer’s rep who would come in the store once a month. We would always talk when he would come in, and one day, I asked him what he was going to get my for my birthday. His response was, “What, are we dating?” I don’t think either of us thought that day when he said those words, that two weeks later we in fact would be dating. Our first date was the weekend of the Florida/LSU game when I invited him to come from Tampa to Orlando to watch the game with me. Little did I know at the time, he was standing up his friends to drive an hour and a half away to watch this with me. Two years later, I had moved to Tampa to be with Kevin. Traveling to work between Orlando and the Bahamas, Kevin sneaked to Cincinnati, Ohio, to pick out an engagement ring. After a trip to Clearwater Beach and a sunset proposal, we went from, “What are we dating?” to “We are getting married!”

I had always envisioned our wedding being timeless, classic, and romantic. I wanted the color scheme to be soft and romantic, so we went with tones of ivory, champagne and soft pink. I was referred to Gina Leigh Photography from a college friend and immediately fell in love with her style. Gina shoots with film and is able to capture so much emotion, texture and feeling in every photograph. She also gave us guidance on what vendors would match our style. We could not have had such an amazing day with out all of our vendors.

Wedding Wednesday.  An entire day of basking in SEVEN gorgeous fêtes chock-full of pretty.  A morning, noon and night of lovely, if you will.  And today’s gorgeous lineup?  It’s just one stop-you-in-your tracks affair after another with everything from a glorious ranch fête to an e-session and wedding that will make your hearts sing.  Prepare for a day swooning in the gallery, lovelies… it’s going to be sooo good.

We’re kicking off the day with a big ol’ dose of sunshine, all thanks to a breathtaking Lake Mary, Florida affair and the oh-so-amazing images of Vine & Light Photography.  Literally overflowing with one gorgeous detail after another, it’s beautiful blooms by Amanda’s Florist meets fun-filled lawn games meets sweet navy blue hues.  This, my friends, is what we call a summertime masterpiece and you can see every last HAPPY moment in the full gallery.  Join me there for more.

From Vine & Light Photography… Megan and Dustin’s wedding was the epitome of a sweet, southern, summertime occasion, complete with bow ties, a signature cocktail (vodka lemonade with muddled herbs), the wedding party playing corn hole, homemade apple and key lime pies (made by the bride’s mom!) and lots and lots of dancing and wholehearted celebration. Their big day was classic, elegant and laced with nods to family and tradition (they had a wall of doors built and decorated it with vintage family photos). Megan had vintage hankies set out for her wedding guests to use to dry their eyes during the ceremony. She also incorporated many antique store finds throughout her wedding decor to marry the two styles of classic and vintage. Overall, there was such a sense of family and community put into their wedding day style.

From the Bride… I don’t really know if I had a theme for my wedding; I have just always dreamed of having a very classic wedding with lots of antique touches. I love the color navy, and I thought that was a good classic accent color to use throughout the wedding. My mom made key lime pie, blueberry bramble, peach cobbler, apple pie and pecan “tassies” (using my grandmother and her twin sister’s old mini pie tins that they used to make the same thing for various weddings and special occasions), and then a family friend made cheesecake.

I know it sounds cheesy, but my favorite moment was the moment I’ve been dreaming of my whole life: walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Dustin’s face. Little did I know he’d be crying way harder than I was! I was shaking like a leaf, but my dad placed his hand on mine and it calmed me right down. As I was walking I tried to take it all in as much as possible, and I feel like I did. It was as special as I had hoped.

From the Bride… I’m an indecisive lady, I’ll admit it. I spent months going back and forth, frantically searching blogs and venues and dwelling over the details.  One night, after a thorough six hours of wedding research, my fiancee Brad sat me down and said, “You need to stop obsessing over everything that could be, and determine what it is that you want and what reflects our personalities.” To be honest, Brad and I aren’t exactly wedding people. We prefer to be behind the scenes, we’re not dancers, we like to spend our nights in, and big groups of people overwhelm us — especially when that big group has their eyes on us. I wanted a place that could make us feel comfortable, not grandiose or intimidating. I wanted to be cozy and relaxed. What I wanted was to be home. The problem was, home was on the other side of the country in Florida. So I made the call to my parents and asked if it would be okay to have a backyard wedding. Supportive as always, they agreed. My husband and I are based in Los Angeles, both in the film industry. Our life and love revolves around films. Our first date was at the movies, and our proposal was at home while watching that same film we saw on our first date. All of this stirred up my ultimate crazy vision: a movie theater lounge wedding. I finally knew what I wanted and could imagine every last detail. I just had no idea how I would be able to achieve it from 3,000 miles away.

I’m fortunate that my mother and I have the same obsessive online behavior. She emailed me the link to Rockstar Catering Company, based in my hometown of Jupiter, Florida, and told me she had invited them over to talk. Within a week we had determined Rachel and Kyle were the ones for us (my mom was also ready to adopt them as her own). Rockstar was accommodating, understanding and completely on board with making the wedding in my head come to life. And they did. The day was perfect. I know everyone says that, but it really truly was. What moved me to the core was seeing everyone in our lives lend a hand in our big day. Our parents helped find us every single last item we dreamed of featuring at the wedding. My poor sister ran all over town in a desperate search for donut holes to go with the evening’s coffee (it was one of those touches I for some reason was dying to have). My best friend, Corey, treated our wedding like a film set — and produced, designed and helped run the show. Courtney Lindberg flew out from LA to take the most incredible photos, while the sweet Amber Moon of Pitbulls and Posies pulled an all-nighter designing our invitations. And then there was Ian, our dearest mutual friend, who married us as the sun set under a gorgeous mason jar chandelier.

As our reception didn’t feature any dancing, Brad and I wanted to ensure that there was plenty of things for folks to do. So we set up a canvas for everyone to paint a special mark on, a photo booth for silly pictures and a movie screen where we played The Princess Bride. I was so thrilled that everyone took part in all of the fun. And then there was the food. Oh, the food! Kyle’s team made everyone stuffed to the brim and happy with his amazing treats. He even featured a taco bar for us! My favorite! The highlight of my night came from the two most important men in my life: my husband and my father. My husband created a breathtaking film where we both spoke our honest “vows,” the words we knew we would never be able to pull off during our ceremony. We hadn’t seen each others’ segments, and when I heard him share his feelings about our love — the floodgates opened. And the tears kept coming. After having demanded no speeches from anyone, my father rebelled and delivered the most thoughtful, sweet and charming speech that tugged at my every heartstring. These were by far the most important, memorable and touching moments of my night. It’s been almost a year now, and I still look back and have my heart flutter over how perfect and beautiful our wedding was. I wish I could curl up and live inside the happiness of that day forever.

From the Bride… Our wedding day was inspired by the merging of our two cultures into one — my husband is a Cuban born and raised in Florida, and I’m a German from the Midwest. We wanted to acknowledge both of our families, backgrounds and heritage and create a sense of unity throughout the entire day. We incorporated this by maintaining our wedding mantra, “joining lives, cultures and hearts.” We kept that idea in mind when we made all the decisions regarding our big day. Our first dance was a combination of salsa and waltz to music that transitioned from English to Spanish. We located our band at a work function of mine; they incorporated Spanish music into their performance as well. I created signage throughout the day at the ceremony and reception that was written in both German and Spanish. The thank you signs, the drink signs and card signs all reflected this. I added the monogram motif to every stationery item and sign that I created, which also brought a unity to all of the signage. The menu also offered food representative of both cultures. My mother, sister and I made the cookie favors; one was a replica of my dress and the other a similar design to my husband’s tuxedo. We wanted to tell our story through the details of our special day, and we wanted our guests to feel they were getting to know more about us from this event.  

Looking back, the day felt magical. We’re so fortunate to have worked with an amazingly talented photographer, K&K, and cinematographer, Tampa Wonderworks. We wanted to ensure every detail that we put into our special day was captured. Our guests commented that our wedding felt very warm and personal, which was exactly what we wanted … although it was a large wedding and in a hotel ballroom. The love we have for each other and our families was reflected throughout the day, which I know was special to our parents as well. My favorite memory of the day was my husband’s tight embrace at the church when the priest made it official. We’re so happy to begin our lives together.

From the Bride… Our wedding reminded me of a movie — set in the ’30s while Bing Crosby played in the background. It was all about vintage glamour. We got ready at the Mayfair Hotel in Coconut Grove 20 years after my parents stayed there for their honeymoon. It rained like cats and dogs until an hour or so before the outdoor ceremony, then 1922 Ford Phaeton arrived, ready to bring us to our ceremony. Wildflowers, queen ann’s lace and daisies were the perfect touch to my bouquet. The conservative Jewish ceremony featured a chuppah designed by Field of Flowers. It was made of twigs, curly twigs, moss, butterflies and my husband’s late father’s talus to cover the top. Rabbi Eliot Pearlson conducted the ceremony, keeping us smiling and laughing, knowing we had made the perfect choice — each other, that is. My dress was exactly how I had envisioned — classic, vintage lace created by La Sposa. Jennette Sandifer created a hairstyle for me that was very “vintage ’30s chic” and made me feel like a movie star. The groom and his groomsmen wore sand-colored linen suits by Calvin Klein and bow ties.

We married under giant banyan trees right outside the reception venue at the Historic Women’s Club of Coconut Grove. The reception featured of hundreds of candles, strategically placed for a subtle glow. The flower centerpieces included vintage copper teapots handpicked by the bride and groom, which held wildflowers in colors of blush, ivory and orange. The interior of the room resembled the Kennedy’s living room, including a baby grand and a gorgeous fireplace which my planner, Teresa Fernandez, filled with ivory candles that flickered all night long. A gorgeous chandelier was added for an extra bit of glam. We provided a vintage typewriter, film projector and black and white photographs of family. Guests dined on kosher food provided by Majestic Caterers of Miami Beach. The menu featured blackened snapper with parsnip mash, lemon chicken with three potatoes, a grilled vegetable tower, butternut squash ravioli and endless amounts of petite pastries. The party danced to the sounds of a live band playing songs from artists such as Nat King Cole, Elvis, Sam Cooke, Perry Como and Frank Sinatra. Pure classic. Our first dance was “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” It was almost as if we had been transported to another time, which was exactly what I wanted. Classic, vintage, elegant, perfect.

From the Bride… Gray and I had a very serendipitous start. I signed up for a free three-day trial with eHarmony after seeing a TV commercial. By the end of those three days, I’d met a charming man I had a lot in common with. We discovered that we share a love for Jesus Christ, estate sales, family vacations, pets and ice cream! All of the important things in life. :) Gray proposed by sending me on a scavenger hunt around town to all of our favorite places. At each spot, I found a sweet letter from him detailing what he loved about me and his dreams for our future. It ended on my doorstep, where we’d had our first kiss, followed dinner where we’d had our first date.

We were so excited to get married at Cypress Grove Estate. My grandparents used to take my sisters and me there to play when we were little. I’d always loved the gardens and the house on the water. Our wedding day was a magical joyful whirlwind. I’ve never seen so many flowers in my life! My favorite detail was our table settings. I wanted our wedding to be like a big cozy dinner party for all of the people we love, and I really think it was! I had my sisters and sisters-in-law as bridesmaids, and all of my best friends were “friends of honor.” They picked their own pink dresses and took their seats in the front row. We also had an ice cream station where a chef would make the flavor of your choice using liquid nitrogen. All in all, it was a perfect weekend. Even more exciting than the weekend is the fact that I get to be with Gray every day! We are so thankful to our families and to Heather, our wedding planner, who tied over 1,000 bows for us by the end of the weekend.

One other special thing to note was in lieu of favors, we made donations to four of our favorite charities. We had a table set up with apothecary cards that had the charity name on them. One jar was filled with gumballs. Each guest had to take a gumball and put it in the jar of the charity they liked the most! It was a fun, interactive and meaningful idea!

From the Bride-to-Be… If you’ve ever spent a weekend with Ryan and me, you have probably been subjected to the feeling of wind in your hair, salt on your face and a few sunburns while sailing down in Tampa Bay. Ryan and I both grew up sailing with our families every summer, and things haven’t changed since we’ve met. We live by the motto “Work like a captain, play like a pirate,” so naturally we knew that a sailing-themed shoot was a must. I knew I wanted it to be different from all the others — something glamorous, something fun, and, well, something that would let me rent this fabulous gold gown I had been eyeing… Having been born and raised in Miami, I knew just where to find that old vintage sailboat that would really send it over the top. We chartered the beautiful, antique, 31-foot Nepenthe II out of Key Biscayne; with its teak deck, classic feel and intimate setting, it was perfect. Our photographers, the amazingly talented Katie Lopez and her husband Cito, could have not been more up for the challenge. We tested their balance as boats passed by too closely to see what was going on — apparently my dress really caught the light! There were a few close calls overboard: a straw hat that found its new home in the ocean and the fun time of explaining what sequins were to Captain Michael. The day was filled with laughs, great wind, and even my fiance telling me that the only thing that could top this day was the wedding. Overall, I can honestly say that I feel like the luckiest girl in the world; I got the engagement shoot dreams are made of and landed the man of my dreams.

It’s Wedding Wednesday, lovelies – and you know what that means!  A morning, noon and night of uber-fabulous inspiration is coming your way, all thanks to SEVEN drop-dead gorgeous fêtes and one gallery after another of some downright pretty.  I’m talking glorious outdoor affairs, fab barn soirees and everything in between.  So, clear those calendars, cozy on up and let’s get this party started, shall we?

How’s this for the perfect start to our day of lovely?  A breathtaking Vero Beach affair boasting beautiful blooms from Thallo Floral Design, a to-die-for color palette (yellow and pink!) and two seriously adorable sweethearts that will warm your hearts from here to all eternity.  Sounds fabulous, no?  Well, if you can believe it, that’s just the beginning of this pretty party, because the gallery is chock-full of devastatingly gorgeous moments captured by the ever-amazing Vitalic Photo.  Join us there for more.

From Vitalic Photo… Lindsay and Shaun were married May 19 at Orchid Island Beach Club in the most gorgeous setting. Not only are these two beautiful, but they are also kind, genuine and so very stylish. We walked into the suite where Lindsay was getting ready and squealed just a little when we saw all of her amazing accessories neatly organized on the bench at the foot of the bed. Shaun had to have been the cutest groom ever having been so involved in the planning process; his main goal was to make sure Lindsay was happy.  How adorable are their two Shih Tzu puppies decked out in their wedding day tutus? They were even present at the cocktail hour, scurrying around the guests’ feet near the reflecting pools. One of our favorite features of Orchid Island is all of the gorgeous, vine-covered walls and breezeways … we could have been busy taking photos there for days. Three words to describe Lindsay and Shaun’s wedding day: stylish, organic, soft.

From Sara + Ann of Thallo Floral Design… The bride carried a traditional, Euro-style nosegay featuring dusty pink garden roses, peonies in white and blush, viburnum, billy balls, limoncello spray roses and dusty miller. The bride and groom both had one attendant, Lindsey’s being her sister, who wore cream lace. She carried a nosegay similar in style, but with more vibrant shades of pink and yellow. Lindsey’s mother carried a petite nosegay. Mercury glass accents, provided by the bride and her mom, accompanied the florals and lent an old-world, rustic glow to the atmosphere. Orchid Island is beautifully appointed on its own, and these flowers were so pretty in that setting. The dinner tables were trimmed with mercury glass votives and lush centerpieces in pedestal glass compotes. To us, a pedestal glass vase has the same effect on flowers as the perfect high-heel has on one’s legs — it elongates! Tables were covered in custom, white hemstitch linens, our favorite for summer weddings. The place cards were perched atop wheatgrass flats with the club’s reflecting pool as backdrop. Inside the dining room, table numbers mimicked the place card set-up, perched in wheatgrass-filled mercury glass pots.

From the Bride… My now-husband Chris and I have a surprising amount in common, and planning our wedding was maybe the simplest thing we’ve done together. We were on the same page with almost every decision, from food trucks to a DIY playlist of golden oldies. Aside from letting me do most of the crafting solo (by mutual agreement), Chris was involved in every decision and even came up with some creative solutions when I got stumped. We were on a limited budget ($5,000) and paying for everything ourselves, so DIY was definitely the name of the game.

We decided on the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club because it was a date night destination for Chris and I and it is such a cute location. We wanted to stick with local and independent vendors as much as possible, which ended up being a great choice for our budget. I worked with the chef at Fire Monkey Food Truck to develop a hearty menu that wouldn’t be too heavy for summer, would satisfy some of my vegetarian friends and satiate Chris’s army boys and Texas family. He came up with an amazing custom menu that we still get compliments on. At a local food truck rally, I tasted Whatever Pops, a gourmet popsicle vendor, and knew that with our date (May 26), I had to have popsicles for our dessert. I still made the cake and got extra dessert trays from Fresh Market, but everyone raved about having gourmet popsicles on what turned out to be a scorchingly hot night!

Our theme was a loose vintage Florida feel, and since I call Chris my “bear” and I was the mascot at my college (Gladys, the Fighting Squirrel) I designed the programs, table numbers, and cocktail descriptions to match. Our colors were navy, yellow, and green to kind of keep with the shuffleboard courts coloring and a vintage/preppy feel. I found the cutest dresses for my bridesmaids, and I was so lucky that they liked them too. I made the wrapped bottles in our colors (tip to other brides — start at the top, not the bottom); I made the burlap table runners, the aisle runner, the bunting (out of Chris’s old shirts!), invitations/save-the-dates and cocktails. Chris came up with idea of the four posts around the altar, and he made them for me himself two days before the wedding! We hung the bunting from there to set the ceremony space apart. For the favors, I wanted to keep with the Florida vintage theme and so I made a mini orange crate with real Florida oranges in a small wooden berry box with a vintage orange crate label I edited to personalize with our names and the wedding date. I also included the mason jar drinking glass, straws, packets of bug spray and packets of sunscreen.

One of the most important things to both Chris and I was to find a way to honor his combat brothers, the men of Dog Company. Chris is a Purple Heart recipient from the Iraq War as a member of the 506th Infantry Regiment. While serving in Iraq they lost a beloved leader, Sgt. David Herrera, and it meant a lot to Chris to have our wedding be a sort of reunion for the guys who were able to attend. So to honor Sgt. Herrera and all the men they served with, Chris and his groomsmen wore the “Currahee” crest instead of boutonnieres. It was a small touch but full of meaning. Following the wedding, one of Chris’s groomsmen told us that so often, he’s been to weddings where people want to make it laid-back and fun and that we should be proud that our wedding truly was laid-back and fun. I can think of no better compliment, and I’m so glad that our friends and family were able to enjoy the day, celebrate our marriage and get down to shuffling!

From the Bride… Gareth and I met by chance through our shared love of rugby. We met about six months after Gareth had first moved to the USA from Johannesburg in the fall of 2007. Gareth had recently started attending a local college, and on the recommendation of a neighbor, ne joined my university’s rugby team — he had previously been at the University of Pretoria rugby academy and wanted to keep playing in the US. Meanwhile, I had just returned from a year abroad in London, where I started watching the game. When I returned to college in California, one of my good friends was dating another rugby player and invited me out to a game and dinner. Gareth and I met at a rugby dinner event, and we began dating a few months afterward. I feel like it was love at first sight, but Gareth was a little shy, so it took months of hanging around the pitch to get his attention. However, once we went on our first date, we have been inseparable and dated for four years until he proposed.

We wanted as many family members from all over the world to join us, so summer seemed like the best time to wed — despite the Florida heat! We had guests come from South Africa, Japan, Europe and Australia. It made us feel so loved that so many family and friends came from so far to share in our day. The ceremony took place in the roofless chapel of the Mailtland Art Center under a canopy of trees. The oak-nestled art center provided a perfect Southern style back drop and was highlighted with floral arrangements flown in from South Africa. We had a traditional Catholic ceremony, but instead of communion our priest gave a homily about a pineapple and passed out pieces of pineapple to eat. He equated the pineapple growth to the growth of a marriage — how it takes years to grow, it needs love and care, and will be full of sweetness on the inside if done right. We did not know he was going to do this — he actually cut up and served the pineapple to us at the altar. It was quite a surprise, but something that we will always remember.

310 Lakeside, our reception venue, is located on Lake Eola, the center of Orlando’s downtown. Although the restaurant is located a the base of a high-rise building, it has a warm, inviting feel (lots of Southern hospitality) mixed with just the right amount of sleek modernity. It was the perfect venue for our intimate wedding and provided the upscale service and feel I wanted our guests to enjoy. I wanted to add a bit of South Africa to everything I could, starting with our flowers. My bouquet was made from a King Protea, the national flower of South Africa, surrounded by eucalyptus and a few gardenias nestled behind the main bloom. Every woman in my family carries gardenias, and I also wanted to honor that tradition. Our table linens were brought in from South Africa by my mother-in-law, as were our favors. Each person was able to take home a hand-beaded tortoise, a traditional Zulu handicraft. Our cake topper, a beaded couple, was also hand-made in South Africa. We also named each table after a city that was dear to our hearts; the table signs were made from simple wooden frames which I painted a pearl-gold. The calligraphy for the table signs was down by my mother in law. Our cake was also a special touch — we chose Sprinkle Custom Cakes, as the owner was able to make us a traditional South African wedding cake (fruit cake, but not the Christmas kind — more like a rum cake). And we served our cake alongside vanilla, lemon and red velvet cupcakes (a Southern favorite).

My mother made a beautiful quilt with African fabric, which doubled as our guest book. Guests were given the opportunity to sign a block and leave us a special message. Together with my mother-in-law, we a made the table signs and calligraphy for each sign. We also tied all the ribbons for the palm fans one each seat at the ceremony. Also, I am not sure if the counts as DIY, but we did have a surprise visit from Elvis at the end of the night! A family friend of ours, who works as an impersonator in Las Vegas, put on a great show. I think our guests from overseas loved it more than the Southerners! The whole event was a bargain at under $10,000, including invites, dress and all!

From Cheryl Dawn Photography, Inc.… Perfectly elegant and memorable! The wedding was family to the core. Family heirlooms were used as decorations, and even the seating was done “family style” on long, beautifully-done white tables. Then wedding took place on the bride’s grandparents’ farm in Wellborn, Florida, where she grew up spending a lot of her childhood with their horses. The weather and sweetness all around couldn’t have been more beautiful! I loved the unique touch of “tying the knot” at the hitching post during the ceremony. The rope they tied, a forever memory.

There is a charming ferry that is the only transportation on and off the island. As far as a design direction, we were aiming for classic simplicity, utilizing lots of lanterns, flowers and natural elements such as the gorgeous banyan tree that we were married in front of. Because this was a destination wedding for most of our guests, we wanted to be thoughtful about them having a good time and creating a party atmosphere, so we shortened the time sitting at the table by eliminating appetizers and added a cocktail hour instead. And who doesn’t appreciate to a sweet, late-night snack? So we included a dessert bar, and towards the end of the night, we had an additional ice cream sundae bar when everybody was dancing and hungry again.

My favorite details of the day were Ellie (our pup!), lanterns (on table and around pool), video cameras for the guests to use to videotape (and photograph) for us, a Polaroid camera for guest book and our best friend from college as our officiant. I wore a bracelet that my great-grandmother, grandmother and mom wore, and we provided flip flops on the dance floor so the girls could dance the night away.
