Naples Wedding from Set Free Photography

Even though I grew up in the great state of Montana completely surrounded by rustic beauty, I am sort of a preppy girl at heart.  Chevron stripes, bold color palettes, sleek and sophisticated monograms… my heart is pitter pattering just thinking about it.  And when I laid my eyes on this little beauty captured by Set Free Photography, it almost jumped right out of my chest.  Because this, my friends, is preppy chic done oh-so-right with sophisticated green and blue hues, fab decor from Alter Elements and a whole lot of happy.  Click here for every moment of pretty.

From Set Free Photography… Abbey and Mario were married at the gorgeous Mediterra Golf & Country Club in Naples, Florida on a terrace overlooking their guests and the old Florida landscape. This was a destination wedding for the Atlanta couple, whose family and friends traveled from near and far to attend the union. The day was full of laughter and happy tears, as each of family’s love and support overflowed for Abbey and Mario. Their family values and hometown traditions were celebrated by sharing a taste with their guests: each place setting held a box of chocolate & peanut butter Buckeyes from Ohio, and Dolle’s Saltwater Taffy from Maryland.

Carillon Beach Wedding Film from Sixpence Productions

Joanna of Sixpence Productions admits that she “kind of ADORES” these two, and truth be told, after spending a few minutes with them via this highlight film, I’m in the same boat. They are stinking adorable and so in love. Not to mention they planned a gorgeous day and held it all on a beautiful beach. I’m smitten.

From the cinematographer… Okay, so I kind of ADORE these two. Sarah Jane was truly giddy on her wedding day and one of my favorite moments in their wedding film sneak peek was when she was telling her Daddy (in his perfect seersucker suit) how excited she was. Sarah Jane + Brad buried bourbon a month before their wedding to help ensure it wouldn’t rain on their wedding day. It didn’t, and we ended up with perfect light! I’d never heard of this southern tradition, but I kind of love it. Brad’s reaction in front of the chapel when he’s sharing the bourbon with his groomsmen just cracks me up every time – “I’ve got nothing!”

Sarah Jane and Brad’s wedding was filled with southern gorgeousness – from bow ties with horse shoes (they are from Kentucky) to cotton boutonnieres for the boys and plenty of pink peonies for the girls. One of my favorite details was Sarah Jane’s parents cake topper which graced their wedding cake, it just blended perfectly with all the gorgeous details.

From the gorgeous bride… Looking back, I’m so grateful that we made the decision to have video taken at our wedding! We had initially made the decision to put all of our media budget toward photography, but once I saw a few examples of Joanna’s cinematography, I knew that we would just have to make it work! When I saw our “sneak peek” for the first time, I was floored by the moments that I would have missed. Brad and I elected not to see each other before the ceremony, so I did a first look with my Daddy instead. Our sweet videographers were there to document it, and it means the world to me that I’ll have those special moments memorialized on film forever.

Our video captures both the planned aspects of the day, like Brad and his groomsmen digging up the bourbon buried at the ceremony site, but also the spontaneous shots like those of the flower girls running in and out of the surf. My favorite memory of the night was sitting on a chair beside the dance floor during the final dance with my new husband, just soaking in the sights and sounds. We were so blessed to be surrounded by those closest to us, and we felt completely encased with their joy and love.

It was really important for us to incorporate tradition and family touches throughout the day…We used my parents cake topper and cake knife from their wedding (which my sister also used on her wedding day), and my grandmother’s bible was used during the ceremony. So many of my talented friends and family also left their indelible marks throughout the ceremony and reception. The flower girls’ dresses were designed and handcrafted by one of my dear friends, and another friend lent her incredible artistry to all of the chalkboard signs. My sister and Matron of Honor helped me scour far and wide for the forty plus lanterns of all sizes we used for the reception as well as the pink linen slipper chairs for our lounge area.

Every time I see this footage, whether for the first or fiftieth time, I can’t hold back just a few happy tears! One thing we have heard over and over from our family and friends is how they can’t believe how invisible our photographer and videographer were throughout the entire day! This is just a great testament to how professional and talented they are! Thanks Sixpence Productions, we could not be more delighted.

Marie Antoinette Photo Shoot from Jacqueline Pinto

There’s the Marie Antoinette you think you know, and then there is this dazzling photo shoot from the ah.mazing Jacqueline Pinto, which can only be described as a crazy awesome ode to the world’s most famous queen, with a decidedly retro twist.  I’m talking pastel hues, yummy treats from Sugar Fancies and all kinds of gorgeous rentals from Unearthed Vintage coming together to create the prettiest of days, complete with fab jewelry.  See every last dazzling moment captured by Michelle March right here in the full gallery.

From Jacqueline Pinto… Most of us know the story of Marie Antoinette, but do we really? There are certain things in history we can not change, however one Sunday morning in sunny Miami, FL a group of wonderfully talented women helped me, Jacqueline Pinto, a jewelry designer, create my latest photo shot. This could only transpire from a dream. I wanted to tweak the story of Marie Antoinette and make it my own. I had Marie Antoinette “redo” the famous moments that lead France into a hoopla and turn it all around while having the present collection of JP jewelry present there for the turnaround. Marie Antoinette also helped us tell the story of our latest packaging and show just how much sweeter our jewelry can make life be.

I have a great love for designing jewelry and it is only magnified when I get to tell a story with my jewelry pieces.

My pastel dream came to be in the most enchanting bakery in Miami, Sugar Fancies. Here, my dream turned into reality. I saw “my” Marie Antoinette come into her ornate pastel dream of a kitchen, open her tiffany blue refrigerator. As she opens her refrigerator she stops, eyes all her “JP” ingredients, then passes her finger through the ones she likes the most and goes to her baking table and bakes away for her people while drenched in Jacqueline Pinto jewelry. After her job is done, and all is well, she then enjoys the sweetness of life.

I knew the day would be a hit from the moment I first stepped foot into this jewel of a bakery. The graceful owner, Sandy, opened her doors and left us wide eyed! She revealed her exquisite pastries that we would use for the shot. I knew that these pastries had nothing to envy of the pastures that must have grazed the mouth of the real Marie Antoinette.

To tell our story we had to create a kitchen worthy of having Marie Antoinette! So as we started to rearrange the scene and make this ornate queen’s kitchen a reality. I knew we had done well when we contacted the our wonderful local rental company, Unearthed Vintage. They supplied this retro refrigerator that showcased our new creative packaging designed by Llorente Design. In the style of Marie Antoinette, we like to dream ornately and out of the box. So, when we put our heads together we knew that there was only one way to deliver our jewelry. We had to deliver it sweeter than ever and drive home our slogan, what other than ice cream boxes!

Along with Marie’s wonderful retro refrigerator we also used a one of kind piece from Unearthed Vintage, a vintage cooler that was converted into a baking table top. This soft mint table was styled in a way that only Marie could have ordered. We layered the table with decorated plates, strawberry milk in tall hand carved glass goblets and styled our jewelry like so. I only thought it appropriate to have choices of jewelry accessible to Marie Antoinette so that she could change her jewelry as she saw fit, while cooking for her people.

Michelle March was in the midst of capturing the final scene of Marie relaxing as we took a quick break to let Cristina Vidal put the final touches of makeup on our model, Dawn, and then suddenly at that moment, it hit me. We had done it. We were shooting a jewelry shot that allowed us to readjust history to our liking and all while showcasing that, “LIfe is Sweeter with JP.”

We hope you enjoy and find that life is a little sweeter while you dream.

Sarasota Wedding from Lexia Frank Photography

They write songs about all white weddings and with good reason…they’re stunning. A layered approach to pretty neutrals is all at once timeless and taking a page out of the modern book. It’s a duality, if you will, that works each and every time; especially with vendors like NK Productions  and Lexia Frank Photography on the job. They take stunning details and perfectly plan them and capture images as light filled and pretty as they come. See all that beauty together in one spot right here.

From the Bride…We were first introduced by a mutual friend at the gym, but didn’t reconnect until several months later after finding each other online. We dated for five years before mike finally got down on one knee on Christmas Eve during a walk down a beautiful street with homes decorated for the holiday. We knew we wanted to get married at the Ritz-Carlton Sarasota immediately since we had visited several times in the past and loved it. Our amazing wedding coordinator, Nicole Kaney, helped us pull everything together so we could relax and enjoy the process. As for the decorative elements of the wedding, we both prefer things that are simple and streamlined but elegant. We wanted to be sure that everything was timeless, so that we’d never look at pictures and wonder what we were thinking. We chose a neutral palate of ivory and black with touches of red. Flowers by Fudgie created stunning table arrangements for us using a variety of cream colored flowers, mercury glass, and plenty of candlelight. In the end, we got the timeless elegant wedding we wanted while keeping the focus on our love and commitment. It was truly the best night of our lives!

Miami Wedding at Grove Isle from Lara Rios Fine Art Photography

I am sort of obsessed with all-white color palettes.  They’re the perfect mix of classy, chic and traditional, with a dash of fun for good measure.  And when you add in some dazzling silver accents?  Even better.  Which is why this sophisticated Miami affair is right up my alley.  It’s elegant white hues meets a gorgeous (+ yummy) masterpiece from Elegant Temptations meets a gallery of lovely from Lara Rios Fine Art Photography.  Join me there for all of the pretty.

From the Bride… Ernesto and I met while attending the University of Florida. He had his eye on me for a while but the timing never really worked out. Finally, during our junior year, a mutual friend set us up. My friends and I were having a party at our apartment and he “coincidently” showed up. We ended up talking, I gave him a beer from the refrigerator and we’ve been together ever since. After graduating we moved to New York City where we spent three years. We had enough of the winter weather and decided to move back to Miami. One weekend Ernesto decided it would be a good idea to go kayaking in Brickell Bay. I did not like the sound of it, but figured I would be a good sport and tag along. We ended up stopping at the Mandarin Oriental, a hotel with a path along the water and a beautiful view. Next thing I knew he was down on one knee asking me to spend forever with him. Soaking wet from the kayak ride, in Nike shorts and a white t-shirt, I was in complete shock! Hands down best day of my life. Well, actually, second best day. Our wedding was definitely number one!

About the wedding… We both really wanted a venue where we could have the ceremony, cocktail hour and reception all outdoors. Grove Isle was the first place we looked at and the last. We fell in love with everything about it, how could you not? From the very beginning we knew we wanted to try and keep the dcor as simple as possible. Grove Isle is so beautiful on its own that you don’t really need much. We decided on all-white flowers with gray and silver accents. I wanted a soft and romantic theme with a little modern flare. The most fun about wedding planning was choosing all the little details that reflected our personalities and relationship. The entire day was absolutely amazing, everything came together better than we could have imagined. The day was filled with love, tears, laughter and lots of dancing. And the Miami weather did not disappoint.

Rustic Glamour from 5Thirteen Designs + Jessica Connery Photography

I like to think of this darling shoot as the perfect way to start the weekend.  Well, that, and a darn good way to spend your Friday.  Because when a talented team of vendors (think 5Thirteen DesignsL.I.F.E Events and De Azucar Bakeshop… just to name a few) join forces for some citrus-inspired pretty, it’s a sort of virtual celebration.  One that combines drop-dead gorgeous stylings with non-stop inspiration.  See it all captured by Jessica Connery right here.

From 5Thirteen DesignsGet ready to feast your eyes on the beauty of this styled shoot! We designed this shoot with an aim to incorporate chic and rustic elements in a quaint southern setting. Choosing three colors (pink, green, and yellow) within the citrus family, we focused on delicate and elegant details accented with gold. We featured a real life couple who are so passionate about each other you could hear the air sizzle between them.

The exquisite farm table was set with a delicate lace runner anchored by delightful flowers that faded from green to yellow to pink. Simple white chargers embossed with a delicate floral pattern were highlighted by gold cutlery, watercolor inspired napkins and paper menu. Gold chiavari chairs were adorned with handmade lace caps to bring a decidedly elegant and chic quality to the setting.

Our invitation suite which included invitations and RSVP cards, seating cards, paper menu, and table number was created using pink, green, and yellow in graceful watercolor strokes that incorporated the metallic gold juxtaposition to the delicate nature of the suite.

Resplendent florals included roses, asters, hydrangeas, orchids and so much more.

The bride donned an empire waisted slim a-line dress with delicate beading around the bodice and a gorgeous rhinestone broach attached to the sash. To complete the look we pulled in a lime green fascinator with a birdcage veil that complemented her red hair and low braided up do perfectly.

Boca Grande Wedding from Vitalic Photo

If we’re being totally honest here, I’ve never actually heard of Boca Grande (I know, shameful being a Gulf Coast resident myself), but after this gorgeous wedding it’s pretty much top of my vacation list right now. Vitalic Photo’s images of the day are something out of a dream – a really bright and happy dream – and they have totally convinced me to pack my flip flops and go!

From the photographer… Erin Leigh Littrell and Matthew David Turner’s destination wedding in Boca Grande was the perfect intimate affair on a July summer night. With most of their family and guests being from Oklahoma, the island was full of golf carts zipping around to the ceremony and reception. The quaint Baptist church and Gasparilla Inn Beach Club provided the perfect venues for a Florida West Coast wedding.

Sailboat Engagement from 1313 Photography

Sailboats, gorgeous light, super in love couples – all those things fall happily at the tippy top of my favorite things list. So it basically goes without saying that I want to live in each and every image from 1313 Photography sitting in this gallery. It’s true. I couldn’t possibly pick a favorite, but I’ll happily spend the rest of the day trying. Join me in devouring all the pretty here.

From 1313 PhotographyMike grew up on sail boats and thought this was a fair compromise, two hours on a sail boat for two hours of photography. The boat was the Nepenthe, through Classic Sailing Charters, Mike Del Marmol was the captain. The marina was Dinner Key Marina in Coconut Grove.

Downtown Miami Wedding at the Viceroy Hotel from Claudia Oliver

One of my favorite things in the whole wide world is getting to see a couple’s wedding planning period unfold on the screens of SMP. Take this couple for instance, it seems like only yesterday we were swooning over their engagement session, and now we get to devour every last gorgeous detail of their big day. It just makes my heart so happy, and I couldn’t be more honored that they wanted to share this important part of their lives with us. See all the gorgeous images from claudia oliver Photography in the completely gorgeous gallery of images.

From Claudia OliverAna and Chris are a gorgeous couple! She got ready at her parent’s home. Their ceremony was held at the Church of Little Flower, the most beautiful church in Coral Gables and their reception was at the luxurious Downtown Miami Hotel VICEROY. Their first dance was choreographed — such fun! Because they were engaged in Paris, they chose Eiffel tower favors. At the end of the night they had a traditional Latin American HORA LOCA which translates to a “Crazy Hour”– when guests don accessories and props for an hour-filled party!

From Melissa Wilson PhotographyPedicabs go hand-in-hand with weddings, special events, joyriding on the beach, or just a fun trip to the ball game downtown… and they’re officially my new favorite guilty pleasure. So it was incredible to feature them as the centerpiece in this styled session in Downtown Pensacola!

This was one of those shoots where you feel like lightning has struck… the best kind of lightning. When you know the idea is going to amount to something you’ve been dreaming of, even though you never knew what that dream looked like until you began photographing all the glorious details!

The idea happened one day on a whim. A single text message. And from that day until only one week later, our whimsy became more than we’d hoped for. Some of the best vendors in Pensacola and the surrounding area participated, and everyone brought their very BEST game!

Orange Grove Engagement from Jason Mize Photography

Monday mornings call for an extra dose of adorable, if I do say so myself. So today, Jason Mize is helping us serve up the style in an extra cute way with this super fab Florida engagement session. It’s a little bit vintage and a whole lot of adorable, and it’s all right here for you to enjoy.

From the Bride… Chris and I met our sophomore year of high school. Our friendship formed slowly over Spanish class, house parties, and rides out to the beach with mutual friends. As our friendship grew, we found ourselves driving all of Florida together in search of hurricane swells and good waves. He surfed, I took pictures, and along the way we got to explore different parts of our beautiful state. As we grew older, our many years of friendship turned to love, and after four years of dating, Chris continues to be my best friend. He continues to make me laugh daily, and we continually challenge each other to new adventures.

Our most recent adventure is beekeeping, so choosing a location for our engagement photos where we could incorporate our honey was really important to us. We also wanted a location that showed Florida’s natural beauty. We came across the Showcase of Citrus orange grove in Clermont and we were instantly attracted to it’s “Old Florida” style. It was the perfect blend of Chris’ love for gardening and my love for old, vintage things…and orange blossom honey happens to be one of our favorite types of honey!

We wanted the session to reflect who we are as a couple, so we kept it personable by using our own items as props – a blanket from my childhood, our picnic basket, a vintage Florida tablecloth, books we have around the house. Of course we had to include our black lab, Lola, and she behaved so well for her part of the shoot! We were able to use our jars of honey as our Save the Dates. As we were taken out to the orange grove, an employee brought us to the most wonderful prop – a light blue vintage flatbed pick-up truck. It definitely tied everything together beautifully and we ended up getting some of our favorite shots on the back of that truck.

We were so glad to work with Jason for our engagement photos. Chris and I are both pretty camera shy so we were a little nervous with being the “models” for the day. Jason helped us feel comfortable and natural in front of the camera and it was amazing how the photos really show who we are as a couple. We really couldn’t have chosen a better photographer and we are so excited to see how he captures our wedding day!

Orange Park, Florida Wedding at Winterbourne from Julie Paisley Photography

Equal parts lovely and fresh, this pretty little party at the Winterbourne beautifully captured by Julie Paisley warms my heart right up. Maybe it’s the happy color palette, or perhaps it’s the sweet southern style – but I’m pretty sure it’s the love between the new Mr. & Mrs. that is giving me the warm and fuzzies, and you can see why right here.

From Julie Paisley Photography… I LOVED this wedding! The colors, the bowties, the boots, it just screams southern style! Beautiful wedding, cute details, lovely venue, it just all adds up to an overload of cuteness!

Daytona Beach Shores Wedding from Monika Gauthier Photography

Oh how I adore a beach wedding. And a beach wedding with a bit of chic? Well, that is so up my alley. So this little seaside soiree captured by Monika Gauthier has my name written all over it. Each beautiful image paints the picture of a day that was not only gorgeous, but meaningful – and to me, it doesn’t get better than that. See it all here.

From Monica GauthierIt was a beautifully sunny day with a slight breeze at Daytona Beach Shores Resort & Spa. The guests arrived early for complimentary champagne while a string quartet played softly in the background. At six in the evening, Megan and Marc tied the knot on the resort’s terrace, overlooking the beach, surrounded by 80 of their closest family and friends. They were particularly happy that Marc’s family was able to make the trip from his home country of Poland to share their special moment. After the ceremony, the guests enjoyed a sunset cocktail hour of light hor devours and live jazz saxophone while the happy couple and their wedding party kicked off their heels and put their toes in the sand for some romantic pictures on the beach.

After dusting off the sugary white sand, the party headed upstairs to the resort’s Atlantic Room which boasts uninterrupted panoramic views of the ocean below. The tablescapes gave a nod to the venue with clusters of white coral, oyster shell votives and barnacle clusters tucked between small arrangements of white flowers in mercury glass. Dinner was then served, and the newly weds danced the night away with their guests.

Megan and Marc’s favorite moment of the whole day would have to be their first look moment. The bride and groom came downstairs on separate elevators, and when the doors opened and peeked their heads around the corner to see each other for the first time on their wedding day as captured by photographer Monika Gauthier.

Sarasota Wedding from Justin Demutiis

The BAD news: Labor Day weekend has officially drawn to a close. The GOOD news: this Sarasota wedding is more than enough to put the pep back in your pretty little step. Because when two photographers say “I do” with The Anti Bride and SRQtees by their side, the result is amazing. I’m talking an absolute overhaul of gorgeousness brought to life behind the lens of Justin Demutiis. And you know what, loves? We didn’t even scratch the surface. See it all right over here.

From Justin DemutiisI’m often asked if its nerve racking to photograph another photographers wedding. But the truth is, I find it energizing. In this case, both the bride and the groom are photographers and they could not have made my job any easier! Maybe all their experience shooting seriously inspired them, because I loved their design and detail choices! Of course you can never go wrong at the Powel Crosley Estate, but the florals, cakes, and vintage furniture truly added to their day. It was an absolute honor working with Dan and Vicki.

Fort Lauderdale Wedding at the Bonnet House from Kat Braman Photography

It’s a well-known fact that returning from a holiday weekend isn’t always easy, but a beautiful bride with an “aversion to all things boring” and a drop-dead gorgeous Fort Lauderdale wedding can make the transition much, much easier.  Believe you me.  Especially when that wedding happens to be filled to the brim with vibrant hues, succulent-filled lovely from Victoria Park and one breathtaking image after another captured by Kat Braman Photography.  See them all in the full gallery.

From the Bride… I was never the kind of bride who had planned her wedding from when she was a girl, so when I started planning, we made things simple. We wanted our guests to have a good time, our food to be good, pictures memorable, and atmosphere fitting to my husband and I. Since we lived out of town, my parents did the initial scouting of locations. The first place they brought us to check out was the Bonnet House, and from that point on no other venue could compare. From its Floridian and art history roots (my husband is both a history and art buff) to its a rustic and beautifully refreshing setting, we were sold.

With the vivid colors of the Bonnet House as a backdrop and my aversion to all things boring, we went with a color scheme of brilliant purple, yellow, and dark green. After choosing my dress, which had a lace overlay to give the artistic flair of lace without weighing the dress down, I picked out most of my accessories from small artists on Etsy. Hairpieces, belt, and veil were all chosen to highlight but not overpower the dress. The bridesmaids picked their own style of dress from the Dessy After 6 line in African Violet, and the groomsmen rented tuxedos with silver vests from Joseph A Banks.

The rest of our wedding went so smoothly thanks to a handful of wonderful vendors. I’m not the most artistic person, but finding Victoria Park Flowers made it smooth sailing. Steven Turner took my initial thoughts on color scheme and whimsical request to integrate vegetables into the centerpieces and ran with it, turning it into something amazingly vivid and beautiful. I love sunflowers, but know they can be overwhelming, and he made sure to work them in beautifully. Event Bliss came in and made suggestions to make the tent where the reception was held more soft and festive, but overall, we let the beauty of the Bonnet House speak for itself.

All together, a weekend of fun on the beach with our closest friends and relatives, beautiful wedding weather, great food and some breathtaking photos helped make our wedding a great success.

From the Bride… Our wedding was perfect. After I found my dress, a gorgeous Modern Trousseau lace gown, we knew we’d be going for a vintage classic look with a modern twist. Mustard yellow is my favorite color so we punctuated the elegant cremes, whites, and greys of the reception room with oncidium lilies, accent pillows, and my Badgley Mischka mustard pumps. We also tried to incorporate family heirlooms into our day. I wore a sixpence piece in my shoe for good luck – the same coin my mother had in her shoe on her wedding day – and pearl studs that were my great grandmother’s. I also wore a garter that was made by my husband’s grandmother that has been worn by every child/grandchild in their family. At the entrance to the reception, we included photographs of other family members’ on their wedding day. The reception was a blast and a testament to my mother’s keen eye for design. We danced the night away to the phenomenal band Serenade of Souls and left in a vintage Bentley driven by Duane Magnuson.

Orlando Engagement Session from Kelian Photography

Two things: I now need a zebra umbrella before my life can feel complete and a copy of I Married Adventure with that signature zebra cover. It’s a zebra thing and a way too cute to pass up thing. And this Orlando engagement shot by Kelian Photography has all of that plus a really sweet couple. This twosome clearly shares my love for those black and white striped animals and a love for each other which shines bright in every single one of these images. Have a look here for more.

Johns Island Florida Wedding from Vitalic Photography

Statement necklaces get me every time. Every.single.time. And this Bride’s stunning J. Crew bauble is the perfect example of why. It adds the perfect pop of wow to this seriously stunning day, and compliments the traditional yet preppy party in an oh-so fashionable way. This is a wedding where every detail should be adored, and you can do just that right here.

From Vitalic PhotographyKara & Stephen’s Johns Island wedding was classic, preppy and the perfect amount of a laid back Florida vibe. Their reception decor was colorful, the centerpiece trees pleasantly unexpected and the striped table linens from La Tavola added a unique touch to the look. Kara’s Priscilla of Boston dress fit her chic style perfectly, and her J. Crew accessories were bold yet understated. Kara also put her own personal DIY touches on their invitations and printed pieces.

From the Bride… Stephen and I had two engagements, really. A couple years before the official engagement, Stephen had asked me to marry him, but we decided to keep it between us because Stephen’s younger brother was getting married later that year and we didn’t want to step on any toes. After that wedding, there was an illness in the family, and again we put our plans on hold. Finally, the last day of August, 2011, Stephen proposed on bended knee while we visited my dad’s grave on a trip to California. It might seem like an odd choice to some, but my dad was my best friend, and it was Stephen’s way of ensuring that even though he was gone he was still a part of our special moment. We initially planned for an October 2012 wedding, but sometimes life has a way of making other plans…

Fast forward a couple months, and after a trip to the doctor for what I thought was my thyroid, I found out I was pregnant! The baby was definitely not planned, but was so welcome and loved from second number one. It was important to Stephen that I be able to enjoy the wedding festivities (and lose the 70 pounds of baby weight I added to my normally fit frame), so we decided to postpone the wedding until the following April 2013. Avery Jane Todd was born on July 11, 2012. She was a big girl (8 lb, 6 oz, and 21 inches) and just the sweetest and most wonderful little baby.

Wedding Planning: I can’t say that I recommend planning a wedding during pregnancy (while you are trying to decorate a nursery and purchase baby gear and take baby/pregnancy classes) and while raising a newborn and then infant (are there ever enough hours in the day to fit in all the eating, naps, diaper changes, baths, walks, tummy time, pediatrician visits, and classes and still find time to eat and sleep yourself), but you do what you can with what you are given – and I will say it really forces you to make decisions much more quickly. Despite having all that lead time before the wedding, the day approached pretty quickly, and before we knew it our daughter, Avery, was 9 months old and we were flying to Florida for the wedding!

Location: I’m an only child, and while my heart and roots are in the Bay Area (yeah, NorCal!) we didn’t feel it was practical to make the majority of our guests, who reside in the Midwest, trek all the way out to California. We wanted to do a destination wedding, in order to try to keep it small (small is a relative term) and give Stephen a beach in April, but again, wanted to give people an option that was close enough to travel to within a couple hours and also a place that wouldn’t break the bank. Ultimately we picked John’s Island, as it has special significance to Stephen, and his family (and to me and our little family as well!). Stephen’s grandparents were one of the first people to buy a home in John’s Island, and because he and Stephen’s grandmother retired there, Stephen and his family made multiple trips there every year to visit. Eventually Stephen’s parents ended up buying there as well, so we have been going to John’s Island about twice a year since we started dating to go and visit them. We had initially hoped that Stephen’s grandfather, who was 99 when we got engaged, would be able to attend, but unfortunately he passed away a couple months later. But both he and Stephen’s grandmother were there in spirit.

Weekend Events: John’s Island is truly a magical and lovely place – it’s got such a wonderful Florida feel, a little more buttoned up and preppy than Miami, but a little more relaxed than Palm Beach. When planning the wedding weekend, we decided that if people were going to take the time to fly down to Florida to be there for our big day, we wanted to make sure it was worth their while! Stephen’s aunts and uncles were kind enough to offer to host a Thursday night welcome dinner in a neighboring town called Sebastian, at a restaurant called Capt. Hiram’s Resort. It’s as kitschy as it sounds, but abounds with charm and fun – it’s very Florida Keys, and if you are a Parrot Head you would feel right at home there. The evening was very low key and it was such a great opportunity for people to meet and begin to unwind.

On Friday the rehearsal dinner took place at the West Course Clubhouse. John’s Island is such a truly lovely place – there are so many gorgeous venues you just can’t go wrong. We wanted to try to incorporate as many venues as we could, so it made sense that we would have the rehearsal dinner at the West Course. The evening was such a blast – Nicki from Vitalic Photo came out and photographed the guests, and also took a huge Todd/Brown family photo (the great thing about Stephen’s family is that it is hard to tell where his mom’s side, the Browns, ends and his dad’s side, the Todds, begins). After a fantastic dinner, and a run of speeches (I think nearly every member of the wedding party spoke with the exception of the Best Man, Maid of Honor, and 2 other attendants who made speeches at the wedding), we cut into the groom’s cake – Stephen’s favorite, red velvet, decorated like a sheet of Michigan hockey ice (his family are die-hard U of M fans, and Stephen plays hockey, so….) and topped with a groom in a tux with hockey skates and stick, and the bride cheering him on with a megaphone and foam finger. While I was an athlete (water polo) and not a cheerleader, I may have missed my calling – so the cake toppers were perfect! The end of the evening ended at Rafters, the bar at the Beach Club (where it ends every night we are at John’s Island). I went home to try to get some sleep, while Stephen stayed to try to catch up with family and friends.

Wedding Day: Saturday morning came and everything seemed to move so quickly! First thing in the morning we got mani/pedis, then headed back to our rented house to get ready. The hairstylists and make up artist set up shop and I was amazed at how efficient they were! Everyone was so sweet and helpful with one another, and took turns watching Avery and my friend’s twins, our gorgeous flower girl and darling ring bearer. By the time Nicki and Chrissy showed up we were just about ready to go! Putting on my dress was such a magical moment – I had dreamed about doing that ever since I was a little girl. And the dress turned out exactly the way I had hoped – it was a Priscilla of Boston style that I altered by shortening the train and adding a peplum waist and sweetheart neckline. I’m always altering clothes and putting my own spin on things, so I figured my wedding dress would be no different. My sandals, so appropriate for a California girl, were Tory Burch. I think a lot of people were surprised not to see me in heels (I love stilettos and I love being taller than my already tall 5’9″) but I think those who really know me understand that while I love fashion, I also like to be comfortable. The sandals were a perfect marriage of style and comfort. The jewelry I sourced from one of my favorites, J. Crew, although the earrings were Kate Spade. My something old was my grandmother’s brooch – she had passed away a few months prior to the wedding and my aunt very thoughtfully gifted it to me just for the wedding. My something new was nearly everything I wore, my something borrowed was one of my bridesmaid’s wedding band (for luck, she said!) and my blue was my engagement ring – the cushion-cut sapphire that took me over a year to pick out.

We arrived at the Beach Club to take photographs, and to do the first look. I thought I would be nervous, but I was just so excited – I love Stephen in a suit, and he looked so fantastic, better than I could have imagined. It was an incredible moment – and one I will remember forever. I had been told numerous times by as many people that the most important thing was to relax and try to enjoy the day and live in the moment. And I think I did that. There were some pretty big snafus, but after stressing about details the entire week, I felt that the one day I would let things go would be my wedding day. Never mind that I had an inflamed eye, my original hair style was a disaster (but with a little help from my style guru cousins I was able to salvage something from the wreckage), Avery’s headband got left behind, we were running tight on time for pictures…I could go on and on. But it honestly didn’t matter. I just couldn’t wait to see Stephen and to “get the show on the road”, as my dad used to say!

After taking group photographs (in gusty winds, no less) we headed across the street to the golf clubhouse for the ceremony. While we had wanted to have the entire celebration outdoors, we knew that we would be contending with the unpredictable nature of Florida weather, so we decided to have our reception indoors, and our ceremony outdoors. Moving a ceremony is often much easier than moving the reception, and it was a good thing we had a back up plan because it rained off and on the morning of the wedding, and it was windy as well. Not ideal weather for an outdoor ceremony! The night before the wedding we decided to move the ceremony indoors, down the hall from the reception site, into one of the beautiful rooms in the Golf Clubhouse they use for meetings and luncheons. It seemed like it was meant to be – the decor of the room matched the girls’ dresses and our floral schematic perfectly, as if it had been planned that way all along! We propped the interior doors open so that we could hear the sounds of the fountain in the atrium beyond. I was told later by numerous guests that they were thankful the ceremony had been moved inside – it ended up being quite hot, muggy, and windy, and I think everyone found the temperature controlled room preferable to the Florida elements.

Ceremony: It’s hard to say which part of the ceremony I liked best – the bagpiper was a nod to Stephen’s Scottish heritage (Todd) and because both my dad and I love bagpipes. The officiant was Stephen’s cousin, Casey, who performed his duties with humor and aplomb, as he does just about everything in life – it meant the world to us that he became ordained just for our ceremony, but he did such a good job he was told by more than a few people that he might have found a new vocation! The flower girl and ring bearer (Isla and Jack) were too cute in their J. Crew outfits and were a hit, even though they were less than thrilled about walking down the aisle. But I think my favorite part was something that I couldn’t see at the time but that everyone told us about afterward: while Stephen and I exchanged our vows, Avery smiled and beamed at us the entire time, almost as if she knew what was going on and couldn’t be happier that her parents were (finally!) tying the knot! Looking back at the photographs I could see what they were talking about!

Reception: The string quartet from the ceremony played contemporary hits during the cocktail hour and I have to say I was beyond thrilled – I have always loved classical music, and love even more when contemporary songs are played on classical instruments. Apparently I wasn’t the only one, as they received many compliments from our guests.

Vitalic has a photo booth called The Snapbooth and it was a HUGE hit! People loved it and couldn’t get enough of it – my only regret is that we didn’t have it for the entire night…people would have been in there all night! But the props were hilarious, and their props coupled with a few I bought on Etsy made for some really hilarious and memorable pictures.

Linda and Monica from John’s Island took me aside a few moments before we escorted the guests into the ballroom for the dinner seating. My jaw literally dropped to the floor. Between the colors, and the lanterns and candlelight and flowers…it was all just so perfect.
After the food was served the dancing began in earnest. Stephen and I are pretty sure that we had never seen a wedding where that many people danced at the same time, and for that long. I don’t think the dance floor was ever empty! Our first dance was to Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am”. For some reason we have always gravitated toward that song, and love to sing it to each other. I think it suits us and acts as the perfect caption to our relationship – Stephen is definitely the yin to my yang.

The speeches were wonderful – my maid of honor, who we affectionately refer to as “Pissa” (her name is Lissa, but she can be a wicked pissah, so the name kind of stuck. Oops.), could barely choke her speech out. Which of course made both Stephen and I cry too! Stephen’s brothers (one is older, one is younger – yes, Stephen is the quintessential middle child) were co-best men, and their tag-team effort on their speech was hilarious…just enough roast to singe the edges a bit. And speaking of roasts, my oldest friend (since kindergarten!) Megan, did a little of her own, with the desired effect – roars and peals of laughter.

The only thing missing from the night was my dad – but I know he was there in a way. It was definitely a difficult moment walking down the aisle by myself, but I wouldn’t have done it any other way. If my dad wasn’t there physically to do it, then he was there with me in spirit, as he has been for the past 14 years. We picked our wedding day because it was 14 years to the day since he died. I wanted to make April 20th a day to celebrate and be happy, and so that is the last April 20th I will spend mourning his loss and instead will spend it celebrating the (official) start of my life with my new best friend. I know my dad would have loved Stephen and would have been proud.

Decor: I love to decorate. I love to entertain. Needless to say, this wedding was the perfect opportunity for me to showcase two of my favorite hobbies! Stephen is so laid back, he more or less let me run with my vision, his only request was a minimum of flowers. He doesn’t like cut flowers, never has – so it made me get creative, and I was actually really happy with the result.
Traditionally I am not a country-club-ballroom-wedding-reception kind of gal. That is not a knock on anyone who is, but that’s just not my style. Stephen and I like to stay at boutique hotels when we travel, as we like decor and ambiance that are a little outside-the-box, a little out of the ordinary, a hint different. The ballroom itself is decorated with lovely wall coverings and drapes, but they just didn’t jive with my initial vision of a neutral palette with clean lines, minimalist decor and an emphasis on fine linens and accent pieces of china and flatware. So instead of fighting the decor, I decided to change the vision completely, embrace the locale and my preppiness, and go with a Palm Beach Chic theme. Kelly green in the dominant color in the room, with hints of bright pink (the kind you would find in a Lilly Pulitzer print). Navy is my favorite spring/summer neutral, so that was the obvious choice to complement the kelly and pink.

I scoured LaTavola’s site for the perfect linens to offset the floral print drapes and geometric patterned floor covering. Cheshire Stripe table linens with a seersucker stripe napkin were the winners. LaTavola is simply the best – the linens arrived perfectly pressed and ready to go and exactly as pictured and promised. I love old Palm Beach and looked to Pinterest for images of Florida decor – I loved the lanterns I kept seeing, as well as bamboo details ( in everything from furniture to wallpaper), and rattan and white EVERYWHERE. In a word, it was fabulous. Jamali Garden in New York is such a great resource for decor, so I purchased all my candlesticks and the white ceramic vases and bowls from them. My lanterns I sourced from Home Decorators Collection and the darling elephant planters came from Z Gallerie. We rented rattan chargers and green goblets to offset the white chivari chairs and pink flowers. My favorite detail might have been the limes – Florida is known for citrus, and I adore decorating with fruit (so underrated!), so it was a no-brainer. We probably cleaned out 3 or 4 of the local Publix of their limes! The little trees were to add a bit of visual interest to the tables – I love the dramatic juxtaposition between tall elements (the trees) and low elements (the chargers). We also had trees placed around the room to bit a bring of the outside in, and with some strategically placed warm orange-hued uplighting, the overall effect was, I hope, very Florida indeed!

Staff: I really want to make sure everyone knows what a fantastic job the staff at John’s Island did for our wedding. The service was beyond impeccable – I mean, it always is, but sometimes when you do events on a large scale one of the first things to go is quality…quality of food and quality of service. Neither of these two elements was compromised in any way through the duration of the weekend and at every event we hosted at John’s Island: the rehearsal dinner, my bridal tea, and the wedding ceremony and reception.
Linda and Monica of John’s Island may have answered literally hundreds of emails and a myriad of questions about food, guest policies and accommodations, venue changes, etc. They did so in the most timely manner possible and with the utmost professionalism. They were on top of every detail of every event, but were extremely subtle in their approach – you could barely tell they were there except when they would come by to say hello or ask a brief question. We hit a snafu the day of the wedding but they and their staff stepped in and helped set everything up to my specifications.

The chef outdid himself – our tasting was impeccable, and Stephen’s concern was whether or not the chef would be able to replicate not only the look of our meal (beautifully sliced tenderloin atop a bed of spring vegetable farrotto) but the taste as well. He not only met our expectations, he exceeded them! The crab salad was nearly a full cup of crab meat resting atop a bed of greens, drizzled with a grapefruit olive oil emulsion and accent with avocado. My friends that usually don’t like seafood raved over the salad. Our dessert table was sumptuous and decadent to the extreme – I just wish we could have eaten off it for a week because it would have taken all of us (125 people) that long to get through it all. The macarons were on par with Laduree, and our wedding cake (traditional Swedish Princess Cake – my favorite) was custom created and about 2 feet bigger than we thought it would be. People raved about the food, and those who were fortunate enough to attend the “trifecta” (rehearsal, tea, and reception) all commented how amazed they were at the taste and presentation of the food.

Sanibel Island Florida Wedding from Laura Elizabeth Photography

If you need a big ol’ dose of summery color this morning, look no further than this Sanibel stunner captured by Laura Elizabeth Photography. Laura was not only the talent behind the lens of this beauty, but she also just so happens to be the Bride’s sister. So it’s no surprise that the heart in each image sitting in this gallery shines just as bright as all the gorgeous details, and you can see every last one right here.

From Laura ElizabethFor this wedding I wore several hats- Bride’s sister, day of coordinator, babysitter, makeup artist, hair stylist, driver, Matron of Honor, and photographer. I was so thrilled to be able to be part of my sister’s wedding in paradise and happy to be the one to capture every moment for them. It was a day filled with happiness and joy after a struggle to get to this point. Last year, Brett and Jennifer were supposed to get married in Woodstock, Vermont, another picturesque area in which to get married. When plans fell through they wanted to have a secluded and intimate beach side wedding.

The day was gorgeous and after a week of storms threatening on the horizon it looked like we were just going to be able to squeeze the ceremony in before the only incredible down pour of the week began. The storm stayed off just long enough for an excited Jennifer and Brett to exchange their vows with their children standing next to them smiling on excitedly. Jennifer’s two children held on to each other, happy that their mother had found happiness, as Brett’s little girl tried to squeeze in close to her soon to be step-mother and father. The family was just filled over flowing with love, and it was written all over their faces.

Everyone smiled on as Sophia, Jennifer’s little girl, tried to quote the Princess Bride but was unable to because she caught a case of the giggles. After the ceremony all of us ran inside the Thistle Lodge were we dined, laughed and had the most amazing cake from Mason’s Bakery in Fort Myers. Jennifer’s flowers were amazing! Jennifer, not being the picky bride at all, just told the florist to have fun with color, and that they did! They were just as bright and beautiful as they could be. Standing out vibrantly against Jennifer’s snow white wedding gown.
