Whimsical Aynhoe Park Wedding

Surrounded by curiosities and the careful planning of Mission Events, this couple wed at Aynhoe Park and kept it personal the entire way. From the Bride donning two dreamy gowns (hello Augusta Jones & Jenny Packham), to the romantic wishing tree Emma Remington crafted, every moment captured by Lucy Davenport deserves another peek. See the entire affair here.

Whimsical

From Lucy Davenport Aynhoe Park is a truly unique wedding venue in Oxfordshire Emma and Andrew held their wedding day there on Thursday 17th April this year. Emma has amazing style, and it shone throughout the wedding day! With two dresses, both from Morgan Davies, Emma wore an Augusta Jones dress for the day, then changed into a stunning Jenny Packham dress just before the first dance. Emma’s sister was chief bridesmaid in the turquoise dress, with the other bridesmaids in pink. Such a gorgeous color palette.

From the Bride… I wasn’t really expecting the belated birthday surprise Andrew had lined up for me while we watched the sun set on holiday in Mexico. Despite Andrew getting down on one knee and declaring his love, I was convinced it was a joke and started to walk away. It wasn’t until he hastily pulled out a beautiful engagement ring that I realized he was genuinely proposing!

We quickly started looking at venues on our return but struggled to find a venue we both loved where we could throw an amazing party for our family and friends to celebrate getting married. After visiting approximately 24 venues (most of which during heavy snow), we were about to book a venue in Northamptonshire when Andrew stumbled upon a blog that mentioned Aynhoe Park. It ticked all of our boxes: not a hotel (check), unique (we got married next to a rocking-horse zebra and unicorn) and filled to the brim with things (and local residents) to entertain our guests guaranteed that the day would definitely be one to remember.

As the wedding was being held at the start of the Easter weekend, we decided to go with a pastel color scheme. After searching for a bridesmaid dress that all of the bridesmaids were happy with, we settled on a pale pink maxi dress from Ted Baker. As my sister was giving me away, she wore a pale mint dress from Coast to compliment the other girls. They all looked truly stunning.

I had no idea what I wanted from a wedding dress until I visited Morgan Davies in Islington. After a few average attempts at choosing a dress, the assistant asked if I would let her pick one. Despite thinking the dress she chose looked hideous on the hanger; I was amazed to find that I loved it. It was a figure hugging mermaid lace dress with capped sleeves and a scalloped back. As my dress was fitted and I wanted to be able to dance and move around in the evening, I decided to wear a stunning Jenny Packham dress for my first dance and the evening celebrations. I loved having the two very different dresses and, must confess, was grateful that I had a lose dress for the evening to look forward to!

After seeing Kristina Gasperas’ phenomenal before and after pictures on her website, I quickly booked myself in for a makeup trial. Kristina instantly put me at ease and also recommended the lovely Kasia Fortuna to help with my hair on the day. Kristina and Kasia (along with their helpers) were stars on the morning of the wedding sorting makeup and hair for 5 bridesmaids, both mothers, as well as me, and keeping me calm. I unfortunately had an allergic reaction the week before the wedding, which resulted in me having a breakout of spots. Kristina and Kasia worked their magic, I was amazed at how beautiful I looked, which I cannot thank them both enough for.

We met our florist, Emma Remmington, at a wedding fair. Emma was friendly and a pleasure to work with from the start and instantly put Andrew and my minds at rest. As the venue was already decorated, we decided to keep the flower decorations simple and elegant. Emma also kindly created and decorated a beautiful wishing tree for us for guests to leave messages on.

Becky Jenkins was a friend of Andrew’s mum and after seeing pictures of the amazing cakes she had made with their spectacular sugar icing designs, we decided to ask if she would be kind enough to make our wedding cake. Although we were convinced that no one would eat the cake at the wedding (especially as neither of us had ever had any at weddings we had attended), on advice from our family we ordered a 4 tier wedding cake. After months of pinning potential cake options on Pinterest, Andrew and I opted for a simple and elegant pale mint green cake, with antique gold ribbon edging and a single peach flower on top. It was beautiful and, to our complete surprise, completely devoured by our guests by the end of the night.

Our caterer, Indulgence, were life savers and helped us during every part of the planning process from menu choices to tastings to potential room set ups to answering questions from suppliers that I had no idea about. After champagne and canapés, we were treated to a three course wedding breakfast of mozzarella and char-grilled Mediterranean vegetables, Oxfordshire lamb and a dark chocolate and raspberry marquise for desert, washed down with an espresso martini. To ensure that our guests had enough energy to dance the night away, we served delicious homemade burgers and chips in the evening and also offered cheese and biscuits (with a decanter or two of port).

The Palatine String Quartet entertained guests before and after the wedding ceremony with a mix of classical and modern music, which we received compliments about throughout the day. The CoverUp Band got the party going in the evening and sounded phenomenal when they came in half way through our first dance (Al Green’s “Let’s stay together”). Mission Events provided amazing lighting and kindly agreed to DJ, keeping us all dancing until the early hours.

We were lucky enough to have Lucy Davenport join us as our photographer on the day. Our wedding was filled with laughter (and a few tears) from start to finish and Lucy captured every moment, providing us with some wonderful pictures to reminisce over in years to come. Despite not being the most comfortable person in front of the camera, I often didn’t notice Lucy and her camera, which is a real tribute to her.

We must also say a special thank you to Aynhoe Park itself. Ross, Enrique and Charles the butler (to name but a few) looked after us from the moment we arrived and made sure our wedding day, for us and our friends and family, was one to remember.

Elegant English Garden Wedding

I’m not sure what is more romantic than an elegant wedding within an English garden. From the blushing bride and beautiful florals, to one dapper groom, this wedding feels like a fairy tale. Ashlee Taylor worked her magic and the joy and love of this day can be seen on each and every one of her stunning photos.

From Ashlee Taylor… Kathleen and Adam planned their wedding in the English countryside of Wiltshire where Larmer Tree Gardens is situated. They were fortunate enough to have a sweet outdoor ceremony which is a miracle with our tempestuous British weather! The outdoor ceremony was conducted with a stunning backdrop on the temple with its rich pink tones blending in perfectly with the bridal colour palette. Kathleen’s outfit was perfectly charming with accessories by stylist and milliner Philippa Eyland-Gentle who crafted Kathleen’s veil as a gift. It sat perfectly with Kathleen’s earrings from Fraser Hart that reiterated the halo on her engagement ring which was purchased on vacation in America. The Groom accessorized with a trilby which kept the relaxed English garden theme going! They also had lots of lawn games and a cake competition for their desserts table which made their day unique. The stunning florals where cleverly mastered by an Aunt which provided a perfect gift for them both… asking people to contribute to their day made it feel like a real family wedding, so personal! We did their photographs with about a 70% film ratio which suited this wedding so well! So many beautiful images I wish I could share the whole wedding with you! I hope you enjoy looking through the images as much as I enjoyed taking them!

Romantic Castle Wedding in Scotland

To say that I’m obsessed with this wedding captured by Craig & Eva Sanders is an understatement. Straight out of a fairytale, everything from the immense beauty of Murthly Castle to the relaxed blooms by Coach House Flowers and everything in between  is enchanting beyond words and looks like the perfect storybook romance. Dive in here!

From The Bride…Alex and I met at a party of mutual friends when I was celebrating my last exam from university. We got engaged four and a half years later on Christmas Eve on Store Beach in Sydney, when we were on holiday visiting Alex’s brother and sister who both lived there at that time. We were engaged for a year and a half before our wedding day, so we had plenty of time to plan all the details!

The most important thing for us was having all of our family and friends around us, which is why we chose to get married in Scotland where we both grew up. We wanted to create a relaxing and fun day for everyone closest to us. We loved the fact that we could have the ceremony and reception at the same venue, and that we could add our own touches by having a marquee.

The weather in Scotland can be very unpredictable, so we planned for the worst case scenario. We had organized umbrellas for all of our guests, but were delighted that the sun shined all day!

I loved walking down the aisle and seeing Alex’s face for the first time. We were very lucky to have our very good friend’s Dad officiate our wedding ceremony, who made the service very personal and special for us both. The chapel was very small, so it created a very close and intimate atmosphere for all our guests. We rented a lodge for the entire wedding party for four nights. I loved that the wedding was not just limited to one day, but that the celebrations just kept on going!

The bridesmaids dresses were the most stressful part of the wedding! I originally ordered dresses online, which were delivered late and the sizings were all wrong! Three weeks before the wedding, I was left with the small task of finding new dresses for five bridesmaids! My bridesmaids were amazing and we all scoured the internet to see what we could buy on the high street. As I had five bridesmaids, I liked the idea of mismatched dresses that suited everyone’s size and style.

I decided not to follow a particular theme for the wedding flowers, but wanted a relaxed summer bouquet with soft colors. The florists captured what we wanted perfectly and I loved the bouquets next to the bridesmaids’ dresses. We didn’t go for a table centerpiece, but instead we had a random mixture of jars and vases of different sizes, with soft summer flowers. I was quite relaxed about the flowers, as I knew that they didn’t need to specifically match anything.

We decided that we didn’t want a traditional wedding cake, as so often people are full by the time the cake gets served. We decided that a cake table would be a great way to use the wedding cake as part of the wedding breakfast whilst giving everyone a selection of cakes to choose from. We are friends with Linsey Reith from Three Sisters Bake, a gorgeous café and craft boutique in the West of Scotland whose cakes are fabulous, so it was really easy to organize and completely stress free.

Our friends very kindly lent us their homemade bunting so we decorated the marquee with that and also with pompoms that I had bought on the internet. My brother-in-law was put through sweatshop like conditions by my sister and made the wooden structures for the ribbon and confetti stands, and also all the signs that we had around the venue. We were so touched by the distance people had travelled to join us on our wedding day, so decided to put all of the destinations that people have travelled from and the number of miles to their destination on the signs. We were lucky enough that one of our guests is a very talented artist so she painted the signs the day before the wedding!

We set up our own photo booth with costumes and wigs that my friends and I had in our fancy dress boxes. My favorite was the Hawaiian skirt and leis which looked great on the boys! We bought a polaroid camera because we thought it would be fun for people to see the photos instantly. We had a BBQ the next day and it was fun looking through all the photos and outfits with our guests!

A tip for all future brides is don’t sweat the small stuff! Enjoy the planning and do not let yourself get stressed over the details. The most important thing is your love for one another, and it is your love that will create a perfect wedding that everyone remembers.

Young Love Cotswolds Inspiration Shoot

Last week we feasted our eyes on this insanely pretty shoot full of English charm from Planned For Perfection and CJK Visuals. We basically fell in love with all the gorgeous, and we couldn’t wait to share this darling sister shoot inspired by a beautiful, youthful love, drenched in innocence and adorable moments. I mean, what’s more romantic than a quaint picnic in the English countryside?! See it all here.

From CJK VisualsI met up with Jane during my second backpacking trip around Europe. I was beyond excited when she said she would work with me on an English-themed wedding styled shoot. Little did I know, she had planned a mini “young-love” picnic styled shoot as well!

The models, Molly and Ed, the daughter of the planner and son of the florist- had only met each other once or twice- and you would’ve thought they were each other’s first love! They were so adorable with each other and I had so much fun having them awkwardly hold each other’s hands for the first time. I don’t know about you, but I think these two should probably go on a real date after this shoot!

Jane put together an adorable English picnic “first date” shoot located on the grounds of the Bibury Court Hotel. Finger sandwiches, picnic basket, cupcakes, and Harry Potter- I can’t think of a better outdoor date in the Cotswolds!

Quintessential English Garden Wedding Inspiration

If you dream of quaint English charm and dapper details for your Big Day, I highly recommend you spend some QT in this enchanting gallery from CJK VisualsPlanned For Perfection filled it with the prettiest of pastels in the form of bow-tied linens, perfectly plated roses and floral crowns from Lilyfee Floral Designs and garden-gorgeous stationery from Lucy Ledger. It’s seamless and well, captivating beyond words. See it all here!

From CJK VisualsAfter my first backpacking trip around Europe, I immediately fell in love and needed to get back. I’ve wanted to shoot international weddings since I first started doing photography, so that first trip over inspired me to reach out and make it happen. I started to email different planners about meeting up in April, when I stumbled upon Jane Riddell of Planned for Perfection based out of the Cotswolds in England. She was immediately excited and up to work on an amazing English-wedding styled shoot with me on my next trip over in August.

When she asked what sort of shoot I was interested in doing, I said anything ENGLISH! It’s so different and very specific- nothing like I’m used to shooting over on the East Coast in the states. Jane was 100% up for it and she really put together something special.

Fast forward a few months of emails back and forth, discussing minor details- and I am in England prepping for my first international styled shoot! I arrived after a flight, train, and taxi ride to the incredible Bibury Court Hotel, and my jaw was on the ground. I can’t begin to explain how perfectly English this venue is- it looks like a movie set! Jane and her team put together one of the most incredibly beautiful shoots I’ve ever seen. The florals, dresses, and real-life couples that modeled for us couldn’t have been more perfect. I am so looking forward to getting back over there and working with this amazing team of vendors again!

Charming English Countryside Wedding in Yorkshire

Since becoming a devoted Downton Abbey fan, English countryside weddings captivate me more than ever. It’s something about the pomp and circumstance, not to mention the timeless charm, and this summertime affair is no exception. Sandra Rose styled the florals, M And J Photography snapped the photos, and the results? Well, let’s just say it’d give Lady Mary Crawley’s wedding a run for its money.

From The Bride…When Ross and I first got engaged, the big question was “Where was the wedding going to be?” With us living in the US, but being from two different countries it was anyone’s guess where we would get married. I am originally from the northeast of England and moved over to the US over 5 years ago and Ross is Ohio born and bred, so it made picking the perfect location for our wedding a little tricky.

Without any intention yet to marry in the UK, we stumbled upon Middleton Lodge online before we had really even thought about wedding planning. We were blown away by the images of the venue and thought the place looked amazing. After a quick phone call to my parents back home, they were on their way to check it out. We knew Middleton Lodge was the perfect place to say our “I do’s” so we made the decision to book the venue without even seeing it for ourselves. It was a decision we do not regret. The venue itself is breathtaking, with its quintessential British charm that has been meticulously maintained by its owners and staff. It is beautiful!

From the start, planning the wedding was easy. From finding my dress here in Ohio, to picking out the flowers and giant illuminated letters to all the other little details. We had a clear vision that we wanted the wedding to feel laid back yet elegant and romantic. It is crazy to think that we did it all from the other side of the world…but walking into the marquee for our reception and seeing all the little details come together to create a beautiful setting for our big day was amazing. I wish I could have paused that moment.

The day was fabulous. The great British weather held out and we had glorious sunshine all day, our guests from the US loved experiencing some real English countryside (and other parts of Europe for those who decided to make the most of their trip and turn it into a vacation). We heard nothing but great things from all of our guests, everyone had so much fun and everything was just perfect and created such a memorable day for everyone – but especially us.

Middleton Lodge was the ideal setting to be married in grand style but with an intimate atmosphere.

Intimate Dinner Party Wedding Infused with Vintage Glam Details

Intimate weddings have my heart. Intimate weddings dripping in gold and vintage glam? Well, that’s next level. Designed by Jessie Thomson with florals from Rose Hamson, these images from Hannah Millard are pure SMP gold. And the fact that this couple looks like they just stepped off the runway and their son rivals the cuteness of Prince George? Well, that’s all bonus.

From Jessie ThomsonThis celebration was a beautiful exchange of vows between the loveliest of couples who live in Australia, but wanted to create a gorgeous intimate wedding day with their nearest and dearest in the UK. They chose a stunning private house and gardens in The Cotswolds, which was the perfect location for friends and family to come and stay all week, as well as the ideal grounds for an outdoor ceremony and tent reception with a modern vintage glam theme, cocktails, macarons, gold dipped feathers, tassel garlands, gold sequins and blush pink florals!

I helped this beautiful bride with partial planning; creating her a bespoke wedding design scheme and recommending fabulous suppliers, taking over wedding management in the final weeks and styling & co-ordinating everything on the day itself.

With under 30 guests the day felt so special and intimate, and dancing the night away to vintage jazz and candle light was the perfect end to a romantic sunny day.

They have the sweetest love story, and the cutest little boy “Albie” who stole the show before bedtime!

Rustic Elegance Wedding Inspiration in England at Almonry Barn

If I could, I would crawl into these gorgeous images from Naomi Kenton and never leave. Because the styling and florals from Amber Persia are next level pretty. With the oldest barn in England setting the scene, this gallery is one you’ll want to sit with awhile, and you can do so right here

Colors

From Naomi KentonAlmonry Barn is unlike any other wedding barn in England, as not only does it still retain plenty of historical soul and a picturesque setting, but it also offers a super stylish twist of rustic elegance and striking architectural design throughout – perfect for the style conscious couple.

Almonry Barn is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (the same historical league as Stonehenge) and has been standing for over 800 years.

The barn is the oldest wedding barn in England!

It was once part of a beautiful abbey – the ruins of which stand opposite – and was used by the monks to give ‘alms’ to passing pilgrims.

This inspiration shoot offers a relaxed elegance with subtle styling details tying the look together; beautiful hand written place cards, linen napkins, and engraved water glasses, all set against the backdrop of the ancient stone walls.

For the outside setting, the weather worn table and bench, raw linen table runner and Edwardian etched glasses and decanter give the table setting the perfect combination of relaxed style and understated glamour.

From our florist and stylist Amber Persia ”I wanted the flowers to blend into the setting, so I went for meadow-like arrangements, which included ferns and wild flowers in gorgeous aged garden urns”.

The drinks table continued the restrained palette of muted greens and whites with glasses of chilled sparkling water, topped with fresh lime and decorated with slices of cucumber.

Whilst inside the barn, wild strawberries found growing in the cutting garden were the inspiration to create a quintessentially English summer wedding.

The striking magenta dahlias contrast against wonderfully fragrant and truly beautiful roses in hues of pink and white. Sweet peas and fragrant herbs not only add to the garden feel but also bring further scent to the arrangements.

Summer fruit features prominently in the styling, from the wild strawberries in the urn planters and individual fruit on each guest’s place setting, to the piles of fruit in hand-made wooden punnets.

This shoot was all about celebrating the natural beauty, serenity and pared-back luxury of this amazing historical setting for a wedding.

Our gorgeous model is Louise Wilson-Ward, who owns Almonry Barn. Louise is a bride-to-be herself – and can’t wait to get married at home at the barn next year.

The two fabulous pooches are Louise’s dogs, Woofy and Wally – because who doesn’t love a cute doggy at a wedding!

Chic British Countryside Wedding Film

Of all the films we share on this little ol’ blog, Super 8 films sit high atop my favorites list. The absence of voice translates to a powerful and timelessness, accompanied by a sweet song. It’s a visual story that seems to hit my core every time—and this British countryside wedding from Mark Brown Films? It left me with that subtle smile of happiness.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/102535424 600 338]

From Mark Brown FilmsA beautiful humanist wedding celebration at Larmer Tree, home to End Of The Road music festival, lost within the rolling wilds of the British countryside and lovingly immortalized on Super 8 Film by Mark Brown Films. Maxine chose a stunning Kate Halfpenny dress, and for her bridesmaids she went with Bespoke. Anthony donned a cut Alexander McQueen suit.

From the beautiful Bride… When I first saw one of Mark’s Super 8 films I cried. It was utterly gorgeous. We were so happy he was part of our day and could capture it through his effortlessly beautiful lenses. My reaction to our film? I was covered in goosebumps and reduced to tears. Everything I had ever dreamed this of being and so much more. Thank you so much Mark for being part of our day and making our memories look so utterly beautiful. Big Love!

Feminine, Floral Filled Garden Wedding Inspiration

Ladies and gents, if you don’t know Amy of Bo Boutique already, you’ll be thanking your lucky stars you landed on this post. Because she has talent like I’ve never seen. She not only whipped up the gorgeous blooms below, but she is also responsible for that gorgeous gown gracing our screens. Amazing, right? Well, thanks to Ashlee Taylor‘s stunning images, we can get lost in all the lovely right here

From Ashlee TaylorThis inspiration shoot was first inspired by Amy Bowley of Bo Boutique, an up and coming Stylist & Floral Designer here in the UK. She wanted to create an ultra feminine and indulgent shoot with lots of bespoke details, which included making the amazing wedding gown which she created herself.

The gown is made up of layers of tulle in blush pink, white, ivory, cappucino, and grey, layered over blush satin and ivory lace, all of which were tirelessly hand sewn by Amy. The result was a beautiful couture style gown, rich in delicate hues and texture. We thought this shoot would inspire brides to be extravagant with their wedding details making them big, blousey and beautiful!

We went with a romantic and indulgent love affair theme, choosing to set the shoot in the stunning gardens of Hampsted Heath… with a soft pale and in-depth colour palette which allows the pops of floral colour to shine.

Our gorgeous real life couple were the idyllic fit, with Charlotte’s wild blonde locks and Justin’s handsome rugged looks, they made for the picture-perfect characters for our love story!

I photographed the entire shoot on film to capture the intricate and delicate colour palette, and enhance the romanticism of the shoot and the whimsical location.

We really hope you looking through our much loved shoot!

Art Deco UK Wedding at Burgh Island Hotel

I don’t even have words for this wedding. It’s just too darn amazing. Honestly, I can’t seem to pull myself away from all of M&J Photography stunning images, and really, can you blame me? They paint the prettiest picture of a seriously stylish art deco-inspired day, and you can see every jaw-droppingly gorgeous image here.

From M&J PhotographyHayley & John’s intimate wedding took place at the Burgh Island Hotel in Devon made famous by the novels of Agatha Christie. The hotel is an original 1950’s art deco hotel that feel like it is caught in the past without having lost any of it’s originality or class. A wonderful place to photograph, especially when the tide comes in and it’s completely cut off from the mainland.

An intimate ceremony in the captains room was followed by Champagne afternoon tea with scones, cream and jam and of course wedding cake. Then the evening celebrations began with delicious cocktails in the bar followed by dinner and live jazz in the hotel dining room.

Scottish Manor Bridal Inspiration

Set amongst the rugged scenery of Scotland is an inspiration shoot that’ll leave you speechless. It’s romance in the purest form, and with Knot & Pop behind every styling detail, it sort of comes as no surprise. From the linen stationery by Lamplighter London to the rich florals from Pyrus, the gallery from Ann Kathrin Koch is one delicious image after another.

Romantic

From Knot & PopWith the founder of Knot & Pop, Susie Young, originally from Scottish shores, To The Manor celebrates all that Scotland offers with its honest beauty and stunning rugged scenery. Scotland has a way of capturing your heart forever – the mountains kissing loch-sides, the vivid and lush greenery, the misty mornings and open expanses of untouched countryside. If you are planning a destination wedding then allow To The Manor and Scotland to sweep you away. Shot at Ardkinglas, an opulent Scottish manor house and gardens, with character in every corner, To The Manor encapsulates a sense of theatre and romance in an indulgent setting.

Mixing purple tones with hints of green and a shot of rich red across florals, the palette speaks of a hunter’s haven and sets the scene for an atmospheric wedding. Pheasant feathers and ornamental birds feature as decorative touches, with the stationery by Lamplighter London also including touches of bird and feather motifs. Upon tabletops, a hand-died calligraphy table runner has ‘Love’ by Scottish poet Edwin Morgan inscribed, with stunning florals by Scotland’s finest florists, Pyrus Flowers, placed in copper vases, and a sense of feasting with fruits laid out for guests to graze upon. Beautiful hand-made plates by Love It Want It Buy It, mix with crockery from Helene Millot, with antique silver cutlery holding place names, written on red robin leaves.

Red robin leaves are layered to also form the table plan, reminiscent of bird feathers, and adding natural texture to the details. Further tactile flourishes appear across fabric flag table numbers, fabric menus and statement hand-crafted shields, in a collaboration between Knot & Pop and Lamplighter London. To move from day to evening, two incredible wedding dresses from UK designer Susie Stone team perfectly, with their dresses always speaking of individuality and absolute luxury. The Grace gown with its intricate rose detailing and ivory palette, contrasts beautifully with the evening allure of the 1920s inspired gown and all it’s embellished glory. Elaborate feather head-pieces by Vagabond Couture and Curious Fair, with jewellery by Maria Nilsdotter and Cornelia Webb add the statement finishing touches, giving an other-worldly feel to bridal style.

From Ann Kathrin KochBeing a wedding photographer is the best job I can imagine. Every week I work with people who are experiencing the happiest day of their life with their very closest friends and family.

I prefer working in a documentary style and shoot on film at every wedding for a few reasons, none of them nostalgic. I love that I am connected to my subject with no distraction like a screen on the back of my camera. I even love that shooting film is difficult. It slows me down and I can really concentrate on exposing the exact moment that matters. Mostly though, I just love the way it looks – incredibly flattering yet vibrant and full of life. Shooting film let’s me create images I love.

Scotland has always fascinated me. With an extraordinary beautiful but rugged landscape and known for endless rain and cold winds it’s not a conventionally pretty place. Yet everywhere you turn it seems as if things are just a little bit more special. The wind is a little stronger, the water a little more cold and the trees and mountains just a bit higher. If you are looking to be enchanted, this is the place to go. Combining the roughness of Scotland with delicate beauty creates just that – a little bit of magic.

With photos from Claire Graham, there’s more where this came from right here. And you might want to hold tight because we’re going behind the scenes!

SMP: Tell us a little about Maids to Measure!
Maids to Measure is a specialist Bridesmaid company that allows brides to come to the studio and design their own dresses!
Alternatively brides can order dresses already designed (and named after the bride) through our website (or through one of our wonderful stockists).

SMP: You’ve designed some of the most uniquely beautiful pieces I’ve ever seen. Where do you get your inspiration?
We’re lucky as its the brides themselves that bring their own inspiration to the appointments and we convert them into dream dresses for their maids, catering for all shapes and sizes.

We’re constantly evolving and always welcome new ideas. We recently launched 6 new colours with Ciate London which have proven very popular (iced frappe, empress, apples & custard, ferris wheel, cookies & cream, regatta).

SMP: What’s it like to run your own dress shop?
There’s never a dull moment! I set up Maids to Measure with my sister India when from our own experience we found their were little options for fashionable bridesmaids. We’d find a dress but not in the right colour of vice versa, with Maids to Measure you can choose any design have it in any colour, size length or fabric etc allowing the girls to create unique dresses.

SMP: What was the turning point in your business where you knew it would really take off?
It started with us working from home, just doing friends weddings and then friends of friends and before we knew it we had random people contacting us, from then it simply snowballed and we knew our idea and concept had legs!

SMP: The most difficult part of entrepreneurship?
Never switching off, I live and breath bridesmaids and I think thats what it takes. Even when Im away I cant relax but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

SMP: One thing you wish you knew when first starting out?
Theres no end, once you have the website done or say the first collection completed you just want to update and change things again, always wanting to improve and better everything constantly.

SMP: Do you have any tips for someone hoping to follow in your footsteps?
You need to be prepared that it becomes your life and you have to be super organised, not just in terms of work but also for a work/life balance. Id be on my laptop 24/7 if I didn’t specifically schedule in lunch/dinner with friends or family, after all its them that have supported us on this journey.

SMP: What’s one thing you’d tell someone who’s hoping to start their own business?
You have to bee passionate about what you’re doing and have 100% conviction that its going to work, any doubts will cause problems down the line. Theres an amazing event by Flourish & Prosper that has some amazing speakers sharing their business stories, which I cant wait for.

SMP: Three things every fashionable woman should have?
Knowledge! of what to spend on (shoes and bags) and what to save on (jeans and jersey), the latest apple product and the confidence to wear what you want, how you want.

SMP: One thing you just can’t live without?
My fiance Andrew!!!

Completely Classic Scotland Estate Wedding

When you cross a classic-loving bride and a formal Scottish manor, you’ve got a wedding that could even give Kate Middleton a little run for her money. From the exchange of vows on the marble staircase, to the regal celebration that followed, Craig & Eva Sanders photographed the swoon-worthy moments, and it’s all waiting right here in the gallery.

From The Bride & Groom…Soon after we got engaged we always knew we wanted a spring wedding in Scotland. Our plans started out simple, we wanted a beautiful big house for our ceremony and reception. Half our guests would be traveling from England the other half from Scotland so it was really important to have the whole day in one place.

The ceremony was going to be an intimate one and the venue should be a place for our friends and family to relax and enjoy the day. Followed by good food, good wine and of course, a band with whom we could dance into the wee small hours of the night.

After being engaged for a few weeks, we booked the breattakingly beautiful Gosford House. The venue was everything we could have ever dreamt of and more, located near our home in East lothian, it was the perfect ‘Big House’ for our wedding day.

A traditional Scottish wedding day with little English touches, we choose the marble staircase and landing as the perfect setting for our intimate humanist ceremony. The light and space was perfect for our guests to enjoy the house and share in our own words what marriage meant to us as we had written the ceremony ourselves.

With colours of peaches and cream running through the marble and the light from the glass roof filling the room, we designed our seating to complement the flow of the stairs, we wanted each of our guests to have the best seat in the house, whatever seat they chose.

Our inspiration for décor was easy, Gosford house is decorated so beautifully, original paintings fitted with gold gilt picture frames and giant antique mirrors, and we simply complemented the house by adding in lots of pretty details.

Our flowers were inspired by the marble staircase – colours of coral, pink, peaches and cream. Keeping the overall look loose and unstructured, we wanted a relaxed regal feel!

English Country Garden Wedding

This wedding is starting out with a fashionable bang (i.e. bridesmaid’s dresses for the books and a lace gown that could kill) and is ending with an English Garden party ripe with crimson florals by Bo Boutique and vintage styling by Helen Millot Furnishings. We love a good garden party, after all, and this gem shot by WOOKIE Photography is proving the English know their way around a fab outdoor affair.

From The Bride…Ben and I went on our first date when we were 12 years old in our hometown of Cambridge, UK. We were in neighbouring schools; I was at the all girls’ school and Ben was in the all boys’ school down the road. Our first date was a rendez-vouz in town one Saturday lunchtime. We were young at the time so, as romantic and sweet as the date was, it didn’t really go beyond sharing an ice- cream and a stroll through the park! Two years later our eyes met again at the mixed girls and boys secondary school. It was then we went on our second and more successful date and spent the most amazing 4 years together. We were high school sweethearts who got to see each other everyday and share some special moments together.

We knew straight away that we wanted an English country garden wedding in Cambridge. It’s where we met and where we are both from so it means a lot to both of us. The fact that it’s a very beautiful city and most of our family still lived there was an added bonus.

We opted for a humanist wedding. It felt like the right choice- we wanted our ceremony to be very personal and a chance to tell our story to family and friends. For us, our wedding was the chance to celebrate our next chapter with them, and also thank them for all their support over the years that had already passed.

Ben and I wanted an outside ceremony in a beautiful garden and preferably near the River Cambs, so with this in mind my Mother, Ben and I began our search. After a few weeks of looking, and word getting around, a close family friend offered us their house for our wedding. The house used to belong to well know 1960s hairdresser Raymond Bessone, AKA Mr Teasy –Weasy! It’s a beautiful property with lots of quirks and has the most amazing garden that leads down to a secret river. Perfect. It was typically English, typically Cambridge and in the exact right location.

The style and design of our wedding definitely changed and developed over the year leading up to the day itself. A big turning point for the design of the day was when my Mother offered me her late Mother’s (my Grandmother’s) antique silver cutlery to use. My Grandmother, Hélène Millot, was a Parisian dressmaker and costumier in the 1920s so you can just image how old and beautiful the cutlery is. (In fact the ornate engraving on the silver suggests that some of the pieces could be over 100 years old!)

And so our classic English country garden wedding became an English garden wedding with a chic French twist. I matched the antique silver cutlery with lots and lots of antique brass candlesticks, a very classic combination. The table glasses were all crystal and cut glass, and mismatched for a modern yet vintage twist. Simple white plates and white napkins gave the table clean lines avoiding the look becoming too eclectic.

The colour palate was determined when I found my dress. I searched high and low for one that was off-white and I finally found it in a Justin Alexander design. The description of the dress was antique gold but in actual fact it was a gorgeous taupe colour. I matched the table linen with the colour of dress by sourcing some beautiful Ralph Lauren tablecloths, and also managed to find some perfect taupe candles which I shipped in from a shop called Blokker, in Amsterdam.

The tables were adorned with beautiful deep red Peonies, grapes and Eucalyptus, all overflowing from antique brass vases onto the long tables, arranged beautifully by the talented Bo Boutique. It was a significant colour pop but worked perfectly with the lush greens coming in from the garden through the vast clear windows of the marquee.

The day itself was just as I had imagined: a personal, relaxed and most importantly incredibly romantic occasion- with a party atmosphere! We had hoped for an outdoor ceremony but in typical English fashion our weather was not kind to us! But this did not in anyway dampen the mood. Our ceremony took place in the marquee, in front of the large clear windows that looked out onto the large spans of garden down to the river. Then just as the ceremony finished, as though on auto timer, the sun came out and we were able to enjoy drinks and canapés outside. It was incredible!

Chic Summer Wedding in London

Move over Ladies of London, there’s a fab new Brit in town and she comes in the form of a stunning summer wedding captured by Caught The Light. This affair may be indoors but it’s wholeheartedly summer thanks to florals in every shade of sunshine by Hayford & Rhodes and simple details that scream chic. See even more of this light, bright beauty right here.

From The Bride…Hywel and I met two weeks after I arrived in London, five years ago. I’d just moved over from New York (ostensibly for a year…!) and happened to move into a flat with one of his best friends from university. One day I walked into the living room, saw this gorgeous Brit sitting there, and that was basically it. I was a goner. It took us a couple of months to make it official, but ever since then we’ve been happily living out our little London love story. I work as an account director for a branding & design agency, while Hywel oversees brand partnerships for the men’s health charity, Movember. We got engaged on a Saturday morning, lying in bed:

Me: “What shall we do today?”

Hywel: “Shall we get engaged?”

I’ve never been interested in a big, traditional proposal, so for us it was just right. After crying, laughing, family phone calls and a couple of Bloody Mary’s, we went into town to buy me a wedding ring! That night, we had friends over for a big Italian feast, shared our good news, and basked in the excitement. We got engaged in November, and knew right away we wanted to try to fit in a wedding within the next seven or eight months. Then the panic set in! Thankfully, we found One Marylebone fairly quickly, and once that was booked, everything else fell into place. We were able to give my American friends & family six months’ notice in order to book flights across the pond.

Our wedding planning was definitely a partnership – I was very lucky that my groom has event planning skills and industry contacts in spades! We share a similar aesthetic and are both pretty decisive, so we were able to keep the process moving along pretty quickly. The day itself was just absolutely amazing. It felt like ‘us’, which is exactly what we wanted. I walked down the aisle to The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” on the piano – just hearing the opening bars to the music now make me start to tear up! My grandfather, who is a federal judge in New York, delivered a sort of secular sermon with an incredible presence that moved everyone. Our friend Libby, who introduced us, read “I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart)” by E.E. Cummings. Hywel and I also wrote our own vows, which is much less of a thing here in the UK. It was wonderful to commit to each other in a way that was personal to us. I wouldn’t have done it any other way. Another friend, Miranda Heldt, a professional singer, performed the soulful “All over again” by Sharon Jones during the register signing. And then finally, we walked back down the aisle to “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” by Stevie Wonder, which was such a fun, unexpected thing for our guests to hear after a heartfelt ceremony. It definitely changed the tone – it was time to party! worked with the lovely Charlotte at Hayford & Rhodes on our flowers. For our ceremony, we chose beautiful silver birch trees for the front of the room. They added drama and a simple, natural feel to the space.

Seasoned Events worked with us to create our menu. Hywel and I love to host dinner parties, and we wanted our wedding to feel like the best one yet. We chose to have antipasti sharing platters to start, which really got people chatting and interacting with each other and the food. We served a delicious chicken breast with summer pea risotto cake and pea puree for the main, followed by truly decadent chocolate fondant. We worked with family friend and wine merchant, Simon Taylor, to choose a subtle Champagne, bright Sauvignon Blanc and yummy Pinot Noir to serve throughout the day. Our beer choice was just as personal: Camden Town Brewery is situated just down the road from our flat, and I’m a Boston girl by birth, so it only made sense to have Sam Adams for both our Yankee & British guests. We placed little cork-topped bottles of Welsh whisky at every guest’s place as name cards. Hywel’s entire family hails from the same area as that particular whisky distillery, and our relationship was definitely cemented over a shared love of neat whisky.

We hired huge light letters (H&L) to transform the space for the evening dancing. It really added fun to a space that is usually so elegant and refined. Plus they look awesome in pictures! Our phenomenal DJ had the dance floor packed from start to finish, and the whole thing just had such a fun & joyful feel to it. Some of our wonderful friends got us a guestbook & Polaroid camera to help us capture moments throughout the day. There are some pretty epic shots and very sweet notes in there.

My advice to every bride is simply to soak it all in. Everyone says it’s important to take a moment, just the two of you, to step away and just look at what’s happening all around you. Hywel and I were able to do that a few times throughout the night, and it was pretty incredible. I also made myself stay very present during the ceremony. It sounds like an obviously or silly thing, but someone once gave me that advice and I found it invaluable. Also, I found wedding morning yoga a really special and calming way to start the day! Oh, and pay as much as you can for a great photographer. It is the best investment you can make! After all, what are you left with after the fact, other than your photos?!

English Manor Wedding Inspiration

At first glance, this shoot might look like your typical English garden inspiration. But take a closer look and you’ll see an east-meets-west approach with a subtle Asian flair. Euphoric FlowersPocketful of DreamsCakes By Krishanthi along with a whole team of talent crafted up the pretty and Weddings By Nicola and Glen photographed the gallery you simply can’t afford to miss.

From Weddings By Nicola and GlenWe recently photographed a wedding inspiration shoot at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, one of the most famous luxury hotels in Britain renown for its 2 Michelin star food and idyllic countryside setting. The overall concept was Fusion – Where East Meets West and was designed, styled and co-ordinated by Vicki & Michelle of event design house Pocketful of Dreams.

From Michelle of Pocketful of Dreams… Inspired by the stunning Japanese Tea Gardens at the venue, we worked from a back story of a stylish British couple who had been heavily influenced by their travels to the Orient and set out to create a look that had an elegant feel with stylish and thoughtful touches across all the décor and details, subtly and creatively portraying that Far East influence. We worked with a rich, warm colour palette of burgundy, wine, soft pinks and peach with a grounding base of oyster silk, all offset by plenty of leafy greens. Brass and antique gold tones were then added to establish a luxe/old world feel that emulated a refined luxury.

Ciné Reportage… I’ve long been dying to share one of our super 8 and 16mm wedding films with you, and I’m delighted to be able to send you what may be the most beautiful wedding we’ve ever shot.

Justin & Carly were married at Preston Court, near Canterbury in Kent in September last year. It’s an incredible venue which includes a genuine Victorian carousel and an island for outdoor ceremonies.

The couple were enormous fun to be around and their wedding was packed with beautiful and original DIY touches.

I really hope that you like the film. We’re based in Brussels, Belgium but very much available for weddings anywhere in the world.

From the Bride… Preston Court was just so beautiful and so different from anything we had seen – we felt like it had been made for us. The weather was perfect, so we could have an outdoor ceremony like we had always hoped for. We got married on the island and most of our guests were just over the stream.

We loved the carousel and how excited all our friends and family were to have a go, and more than anything we loved the things that we had made ourselves because they represented such labors of love!

We didn’t have a color scheme or a theme as such. Everything was just ‘stuff we like’. I love anything that’s had a past life and love to know where something has come from and the story behind it. We spent endless weekends collecting and gathering bits. From all our china and linen to old bottles and tins for the flowers. I LOVED every second. We’re even thinking about hiring it all out so I don’t have to say goodbye to any of it!

Justin made a photo wall – we collected picture frames to poke your head through and covered it with very kitsch wallpaper. The swallows on the wall were from my Grandma’s kitchen.. We have family from different parts of the country so we made a sign with how many miles to each part on it, as well as an arrow to where you could ‘cut some rug’ .

I had my dress made by Kerry J Tuckett of Very Me. I had to put all my faith in Kerry and try and communicate exactly what I wanted. With Kerry’s prowess and infinite skill we worked together to make my dream dress. I collected the Art Deco buckle from eBay and the chain on the top back of my dress was from a cheapy bin at a vintage fair – in its heyday it was a set of collar clips!

My red shoes were Karen Millan and my hairpiece was a pearl necklace that I had found at a car boot sale made into a beautiful piece by Gemma Sutton, who also did my hair and makeup. The Bridesmaids dresses were from Zara which were all altered to suit each maid.

Justin’s suit was from Ted Baker, his Grandmother passed away a month before the wedding and left, with his mum, a lucky Horseshoe brooch to be given to him on the morning of our big day. It looked perfect.

Our best idea was deciding to have a cinematographer. We had Will from Ciné Reportage and it was the best money that we ever spent. They went above and beyond on the day and fit in perfectly. It was so unobtrusive that people were surprised when we said we had a film made. We can’t talk highly enough about them, the film makes me cry every time, it is so romantic.

Justin in case you’re wondering about the chimney sweeps(!): In Great Britain it is considered lucky for a bride to see a chimney sweep on her wedding day. It started about 200 years ago when a London chimney sweeper saved the life of King George III. The sweep had been the only person brave enough to stop the King’s out of control horses and carriage. By Royal Decree the King proclaimed that all sweeps are good luck bearers and should be treated with respect. The folklore was established and to this day chimney sweeps are still invited to attend weddings and kiss the bride for good luck.

From The Bride…We definitely had a bit of an animal theme going on with a side of cowboy and American Ranch thrown in for good measure. Our decorations came from all over the place: charity shops, antique shops, Etsy, Ebay and my Nan, and were mostly sourced by me in the months leading up to the wedding.

Our invitations (which I designed) featured two chickens so these kind of became our emblem. My favorite decorations were the two feathered life-size chicken that I ordered from the States. They kept a watchful eye over everyone from the bar all night.

I really wanted antler chandeliers but these are generally quite expensive – eventually I found the ones we had randomly at Next. Then there were vases, animal planters, chalk boards, wagon wheels. vintage signs, fake animal heads and brass animals. Paper decorations for the marquee were custom made by FunkyFrillsUK from Etsy. Each table was named after an animal so for the name places I bought lots of Childrens plastic animals and spray painted them white, in fact I was up early doing this on the morning of the wedding! I used kraft tags and hand stamped all of the names.

Will and I met through two of our best friends, the best man and one of the bridesmaids, who met at university and are now married. I always knew I wanted to get married in North Norfolk as it’s where I grew up and it’s a really special place but we were very lucky to find Scaldbeck House as it had only just been refurbished and the owner agreed to apply for a licence so that we could have our wedding there. The thing that did it for us was the view looking out over Morston Harbour, which is a bit wild and of course those big Norfolk skies.

One of my best friends, Charley (who did an amazing reading of Roald Dahl’s Cinderella at the ceremony) is a wedding planner and has a fantastic blog called London Bride. I was quite daunted by the task of choosing a photographer but she recommended a few and I loved Britt’s work. Beautiful, stylish and memorable and not a hint of cheese. Also she is very happy and relaxed which is great as Will and I are both terrible at having our photos taken usually.

From the Bride… Oliver and I met almost 10 years ago when I was living in Dubai and he was on holiday visiting a mutual friend. To my good luck he decided to move there a few years later and it didn’t take long for us to become great friends and then something more. We got engaged in the summer of 2012 and moved to London shortly after.

Planning the wedding was a dream for me. With the help of my amazing parents and my wonderful in-laws, we were granted everything we could have hoped for for our big day. The first thing we decided on was the venue, Oli’s family home in Kent, Little Bedgebury Farm. We fell in love with the idea of having a chic country wedding at a place that felt personal to Oli’s family and mine. The rest was a breeze, from finding our wonderful photographer, Sophia Hanbury, to choosing Simon at Wedding Film Studio to document the day, to Oli’s favourite part of the planning process, deciding on the cake!

The day itself couldn’t have gone any better. The weather was perfect, we had our closest friends and family around us, and the setting was dreamier than I could have ever imagined. Simon did an incredible job in capturing all of this and more. Our families have watched the DVD of the wedding more times than they can count, and every time Oli and I watch it, we get transported back to the best day of our lives.
