Elegant Peach Portugal Wedding

When the name Brancoprata flashes across my screen, I know it’s going to be a good day. André and Sofia are masters at both photography and florals (two of my favorite things to gaze at) and they absolutely nailed it with this pale peach Casa Allen wedding in Porto. From that gorgeous ring by AG Jewels to the dreamy cake from T Bakes, there’s so much pretty to love and a film from The Amazing Rabbit to boot!

From BrancoprataJoana and Ricardo knew exactly what they wanted for their wedding, so they went on a little “hunt” to find the perfect venue! They knew that they wanted an unexpected setting, not just another wedding venue and also, they wanted to get married in the middle of the city, Porto. They visited Casa Allen, an old house used as an Art Center and that was it, love at first sight! The place was everything Joana and Ricardo envisioned: classic, elegant and timeless.

The couple didn’t forget any detail, they made all the stationery and customized paper goods, the wedding dress was designed exclusively for Joana, a Mini Cooper classic was their choice of car to arrive at the venue and José Lima’s Jazz band played in front of the beautiful house, during cocktail hour. They chose the front of the house as a setting for the cutting of the cake and in the end, all the guests wished them all be best with sparklers.

From French Grey PhotographyA styled shoot in the amazing Sintra region of Portugal, just a few kilometres outside of Lisbon. Inspired by the amazing colors, products and beauty of the countryside.

We worked with a very experienced team of vendors from the region, to create some beautiful images which will hopefully inspire future couples to choose Portugal for their destination wedding. The people and choice of high quality vendors on offer in this small but historically rich country is amazing!

With the assistance of my awesome wife, Kasia, from French Grey Events; and Monica the owner of Amor Pra Sempre, we found the best of the best within Portugal to collaborate with us on this shoot.

This fabulous team included the likes of Tania from T Bakes, this american-trained patisserie chef makes the most amazing sugar creations, so good you just want to stare and marvel at them all day long (yes, even the leaves and flower on the cake is edible)! The beautiful dresses provided by Joana Montez Atelier are romantically detailed with layer upon layer of chiffon and beautiful bead detailing, that were married perfectly with the amazing hand-crafted jewelry of Sylvie Castro from SYO luxury jewelry.

Stationary and graphics were created by Nabe Fabrics from France, a partnership which started years ago when we first met at the Salon de Marriage au Carrousel du Louvre in Paris. This talented team were amazing to work with and helped us to create custom invitation designs for our happy “bride and groom.”

We got lucky and had the most amazing beautiful sunny day at the vintage Quinta nestled high up in the Sintra park, with amazing views of the ocean. The whole place was at our disposal for the shoot, and the venue was full of amazing props that we used for the styled shoot. Future couples can also choose from an array of furnishings and accessories on site to make their wedding decor uniquely European and add that touch of vintage.

Stunning White Wedding in Portugal with an Old World Feel

Sofia and Andres of Brancoprata just might be the wedding world’s cutest power couple. They’re equal parts stunning photography and design genius and anything they have their hands in is guaranteed to be an affair to remember. Like this destination wedding set in Portugal that’s swimming with elegant touches and sun-lit photographs a plenty. See the full affair from beginning to end here.

From Brancoprata… When the bride first emailed us, we immediately realized that this was going to be a special event! Both the bride and groom live abroad and they decided to get married in the north of Portugal, at Pousada do Monte de Santa Lúzia. A beautiful hotel with a spectacular view overlooking Viana do Castelo, a very well know city in the North of Portugal! It was a weekend of various activities for the guests, where they had the chance to learn more about portuguese traditions and customs. As far as the wedding day, the couple wanted to create an elegant and timeless ambience! They incorporated little touches that made the day unique! For instance, the cake topper used was a vintage piece designed for the bride’s parents wedding! To honor the groom’s cultural background, the bride did some traditional henna art. The couple and guests enjoyed a beautiful sunset during cocktail hour and after dinner they danced the night away!

From Love Is My Favorite ColorPortugal has long been popular for it’s beautiful beaches and landscapes, it is now getting more and more popular for it’s amazing wedding venues. The Palácio de Estói in the Algarve is a perfect example of a dream wedding venue. Its architecture dates back to the 18th century.

This breathtaking venue is decorated from top to bottom in Portuguese tiles on beautiful pink walls and amazing gardens. Once Sheila e João visited this venue, they knew they were getting married there, no matter what.

Portugal Palace Destination Wedding

When I was a little girl I’d dream of a fairytale type of wedding. It’d obviously be set in a far-away palace complete with a killer ballgown and horse-drawn carriage. And while my real wedding turned out a bit more understated, it certainly doesn’t mean I can’t live vicariously through this bride who, along with Karson Butler EventsBrancoprata and Meant To Be Calligraphy, brought every last dream to life. Katie Stoops captured the magic, and you better brace yourself for Portugal wedding perfection.

From Karson Butler Events… We absolutely love destination weddings and this spring wedding in the historic city of Sintra, Portugal is one of our all-time favorites. Lush landscapes, rolling hills and historic estates tucked into the mountainside provided a romantic backdrop perfect for a wedding weekend! We planned the weekend’s events at FOUR different palaces – each very different in architecture and style!

Favorite details:

*Its not everyday that you get to sleep in a palace, and Tivoli Palacio De Seteais, does not disappoint! The incredible team there ensured the wedding group felt right at home throughout their stay.

*The culinary team at Penha Longa Catering (led by the talented Sara Gomes) is incredible! We worked with them to create one-of-a-kind dining experiences. Our favorite meal was the wedding dinner! Each guest was served an individual Portuguese cataplana (a cataplana is both the name of the copper vessel and the dish itself – it looks like a copper shell and steam cooks the ingredients in broth.) During our initial consultation with the couple, I had mentioned a cataplana cooking class I had planned during my last trip to Portugal, which started our conversation about Sintra as a destination, and the rest is history! So to see this dish ultimately served as their wedding meal was really special for me!

*The intricate walls at the wedding venue Palácio De Monserrate served as inspiration for the invitation suite design (a laser cut custom sleeve matches the pattern in the walls) and the incredible cake by T Bakes! We had custom postage made using an image from a vintage postcard of the palace.

*Working hand in hand with Sofia at Brancoprata was a highlight to this wedding. We had long admired her work from afar, and were so incredibly happy to work together in her home country. The flowers were absolutely wonderful!

*Katie Stoops’ dreamy images bring back so many wonderful memories – we were so excited to have her in Portugal with us!

*A horse drawn carriage transported our bride between the palaces for the wedding.

Romantic Blush Portugal Wedding

If you haven’t noticed, we’re suckers for a pretty pair of heels and we’ve got a whole gallery full of them (thousands, actually!) to prove it. So when we heard that this stunning bride wore not one, but three pairs of shoes on her wedding day, designed by her own father AND brand-named after her? Well, you can imagine our excitement. There’s even more to swoon over from the amazing Brancoprata.

From BrancoprataBelinda has always been the kind of girl whose dreams had nothing to do with getting married! She always told her family and friends that she would never marry. Until the day she found herself hopelessly in love with her longtime friend, Pedro! They were best friends even before they started dating and shared everything with each other! It was undoubtedly a love that began in a true and very strong friendship! Maybe that’s why the motto of their marriage was “Today I married my best friend” or if you want, in Portuguese “Hoje casei com o meu melhor amigo”. Once Belinda and Pedro decided to marry , Belinda realized it was more enthusiastic about the subject marriage than what she initially thought. She was also very surprised when she realized that the colors she wanted for their wedding were blush pink and silver… quite girly and romantic, right?

A curious thing about this wedding was without any doubt the three… yes, three pairs of shoes that the bride wore, all from the same shoe brand, the one her father created with her own name, Belinda. How cool is that? Also she wore two different dresses, a Pronovias gown for the religious ceremony and dinner and a beautiful Karen Millen for the party!

At midnight they all sang “Happy Birthday” to Belinda’s goddaughter as she turned eighteen and afterwords they danced for the first time as husband and wife and didn’t stop dancing until dawn. Belinda and Pedro enjoyed their wedding day always with a smile on their faces and neither the fog or bad weather managed to get those smiles off their faces!

Romantic, DIY Wedding in Portugal

I’ve professed my love for the Brancoprata dream team a time or two on SMP, and just when I think they’ve wowed me beyond words (which is no easy feat), they send over a wedding like this one that completely knocks my wedding-loving socks off. With a simple yet completely elegant feel, this gallery is yet another reason I will always adore team Brancoprata. See even more here.

From the Bride…We met 8 years ago at a college party. I felt it was destiny that had brought us together. Our relationship has always been so magical and intense since we met…

It was a year ago that we decided to get married. It was the right moment. I knew that from there to the wedding it wouldn’t be very long. And so it was: 7 months of preparation was ideal for us. We wanted every detail to be our reflection. Our ceremony should show who we are as a couple. The most important decision was the venue and from there everything fell into place. We chose an historic estate with a stunning landscape, full of beautiful details and where the dining room is built over an old stone wine press.

We designed everything from the invitations to the ceremony guides. We decided the bouquet’s flowers and table arrangements. After organizing the space, we chose the music. In the end everything came out just the way we wanted. Every detail had come out of our hands and that was the most important. Love stood out.

Rustic Destination Wedding in Algarve, Portugal

André and Sofia of Brancoprata are a wedding dream team. Not only do they have more talent in their pinky finger than I have in my entire body, but they are also as sweet as they come. So we basically adore them here at SMP. And when they send a wedding along like this one at Villa Termal Das Caldas De Monchique? We want to reach through the screen and give them a big old fat kiss. See why here.

From BrancoprataLast September Brancoprata’s team traveled to the south of Portugal to help Stephanie and Luke’s destination wedding! It was an honor for us to be part of this day and, as you can imagine we love how everything turn out!

From the Bride…When Luke proposed to me in April 2012, I was in utter shock! We had only been dating four months but there was no doubt in my mind that this man was the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. After the shock had subsided, I screamed, cried, laughed and ran to call my family who were abroad. The moment their phone rang, they knew what I exciting news I was about to tell them! Luke had asked my father for his permission to have my hand in marriage a month or so before. My family all love Luke so much and my father was proud to have him as his son-in-law so wasted no time in accepting his request!

The proposal was intimate and personal. It was very well planned and so romantic. Looking back it was Luke all over. The ring? Oh my gosh. THE ring. It was perfect in every way and fell in love immediately. It is a bespoke engagement ring designed for me and that meant even more. We both agreed to enjoy a few months of our engagement first before making a decision where and when to get married. The venue, for us, was the most important decision we would make and we wanted time to get it right with no regrets. In the summer we visited many places in the Yorkshire Dales and The Lake District. None of the places had the “feel” we wanted to experience when we walked in. We just couldn’t imagine getting married in these places?! My mother dropped the idea of getting married abroad. We hadn’t really considered it, but why not? Good weather with a taste of local culture. We booked flights to Portugal immediately. Portugal is a special place to us both. It’s like a second home to me and has been for 25 years or so. Luke loved the country. We had shared some special holidays there together so it only seemed natural to visit some venues there. One thing we were sure about was that we didn’t want a “typical” beach wedding. We drove into the mountains one day and visited a place I once went to as a child. Caldas de Monchique. For anyone who has visited this place will agree, it is paradise. A stunning place with amazing views across the green mountains. For anyone who doesn’t know it, there is a wonderful history about natural healing waters from the springs.

We walked around and spotted a very old Chapel and below it, what seemed a village plaza. I looked at Luke and will never forget the cheeky smile that appeared on his face. Grabbing my hand really tight………….”This is it wife to be. This is where I am going to marry you”. I was so happy. I had butterflies already and my heart was pounding! I was in love with this man and this place. I couldn’t wait to get planning. We went into the Hotel adjacent to the plaza and discovered the Chapel and the plaza belonged to the Hotel. Perfect. We were booked in.

Our next choice was having Brancoprata involved in the styling and photography of our wedding day. We can’t even begin to explain how talented this couple are. Sofia with her stunning bespoke design service blew us away as we trawled through her blog, and we knew we needed her on board immediately. Take a look at our pictures and you will see exactly why. She has such a gift when it comes to her talent in design of paper goods, flowers and general styling. Andre, her partner in crime, a photographer with talent I’ve never witnessed before. His photos are not just amazing shots, but they tell a story. Since receiving the photos, they have brought a tear to my eye, we have been overwhelmed by the moments he caught.

We were particular about who we wanted at the wedding ensuring only our closest and fondest friends and family were there to share our special day with us. You can’t imagine how overwhelmed we were when 60 of the 70 accepted! We also ensured that for the intimacy and privacy we wanted, we booked the whole hotel out exclusively for the weekend Friday to Monday (getting married on the Sunday). This meant we had a couple of days to relax and have some fun with our friends before the big day. The Friday consisted of not much more than lots of Caipirinhas and Aqua Zumba in the outdoor pool. Don’t ask! The photos say it all! Saturday my father had arranged a barbecue for us all to spend time together. This was such a thoughtful idea as it gave all the guests a chance to get to know each other before the following day! At 11pm I gave up! I couldn’t keep up with the rest of them. I wanted an early night and I was spending the night in the Suite with my friend so headed back and had a very girlie chat about romance and love before hitting the sack!

The next day I woke up and I was remarkably calm. The hairdresser and bridesmaids arrived on cue at 9.30am and we began our 5 hour preparation session! Luke had arranged for breakfast to be served in the Suite for us (which I had not even thought about) and it was lovely having that time all together. Shortly after, a bunch of flowers and card arrived from the Groom himself. I stared at the flowers. I had no idea, but Luke had arranged with Sofia a couple of months previously to have a fresh bunch made up in the morning to be sent with his card. They were stunning. Wow. I had not given Sofia an idea about what flowers I had wanted, I trusted her and loved her work and this was the first little glimpse in what she had prepared for our big day as far as flowers were concerned. Trust me, we had A LOT of flowers!!! I was so excited, I opened the card. I began reading and the more I read, the more tears fell. Beautiful words from a beautiful man. The butterflies began, the mini bar was opened, the Champagne was opened and all of a sudden I was a nervous wreck! Get me there already, I cannot wait a minute longer to marry this man. My soul mate, lover and best friend. I looked towards one of my bridesmaids who had just started reading Luke’s card and she was now also balling her eyes out! It was too cute.

Our ceremony was personal yet modern. Father Paul was amazing and made it very light hearted by adding some humour from time to time which was lovely The guests loved him. Natasha our ceremony coordinator was present throughout so she ensured everything ran as it should and counted the String Quartet in for the arrival of the guests, the groom and of course the bride! I walked down the aisle to Canon Pachelbel. It was beautiful and the String Quartet were amazing.

Post ceremony we held the Arrival Drinks Reception on the rustic balcony belonging to the hotel. Again we had the string quartet who played modern jazz tunes and champagne was served. Luckily, last minute, we arranged for Caipirinhas to be served in large punch bowls on the rustic bar we had made by a local carpenter, who had one arm. Seriously. It was a lovely touch for the arrival drinks setting.

We kept dinner traditional and true to Portugal. The choices ranged from local meats, fish and crepes. The food was wonderful as was the service throughout. A traditional desert buffet was served later in the evening in the square. Again, idyllic and served below the trees that were lit with fairy lights. The band were amazing and I had provided all the girls with a pair of flip flops (in a basket by the dancefloor) and I am so happy to say that not one pair was left by the end of the night! Money well spent! Also, a great souvenir. The favours were traditional and the day before the wedding Luke and I went to collect them. I had arranged for bottles of Medronho (a local spirit translated as “firewater” enough said) for the gents and pots of local honey with pine nuts for the ladies. They were perfect and so practical as everyone could take them home in their suitcases as a memory. Needless to say, I think most of the Medronho was drunk that night, there were a few empty bottles on some tables and a few headaches the next morning at breakfast! Overall our wedding was more than what we had even dreamt, it was relaxed, memorable and so much fun! Our guests are still speaking about it and have serious holiday blues.

A big thank you to all the staff at Vila Termal Spa Resort and of course to Sofia and Andre in whom we have found a wonderful friendship and we will continue to support to them in everything they do. Viva Brancoprata!

Portugal Wedding at Quinta Matalva

I love a wedding that marches to the beat of it’s own drum. A wedding that bucks tradition and breaks all the rules in the prettiest of ways. *Enter* this Portugal beauty straight from the lens of Matt And Lena Photography. With the most picturesque woodland ceremony followed by picnic on the beach, these love birds said “I do” on their very own terms. Want even more? We’ve got it waiting right here!

From the sister of the groom… When my brother Daniel and his wife to be Doreen told me about their decision to marry in Portugal I was overly joyed. This would be my first wedding in Portugal and my mind was already spinning with endless ideas. Knowing Doreen, I knew that her special day would have to be the ultimate romantic fairy tale. D&D both share a passion for flea markets, vintage music, shabby chic home-style, nature and everything with that sort of patine that makes us dream again. Perfect for a vintage girl like myself.

But there was one issue: LOCATION. Our Quinta, Bella Vista, was still in shambles, so we would have to shop around. We decided that pictures alone, won’t do, one must feel the space for such an important moment in life and so D&D flew in and we went on a massive scouting week. We visited countless of Quintas one more beautiful then the next, yet there was always something that did not fit the dream. When their time over here came to an end and we still had no location, I started to worry. Doreen seemed to loose all hope, her pre-marriage glow fading away, when finally we spotted a perfect place. Quinta Matalva. Ahhh, stones dropped from my shoulders and smiles were back on. Matalva has an enchanting garden with an old wall which was seemed for the wedding backdrop. D&D went back home and excitedly booked the Quinta. Only much later we found out, that this part of the garden belonged to the main house which was a separate property and would not be available for use. Oh no!

Trying to find another area in the garden that would suit D&D’s expectations proofed fruitless. That’s when I decided that Quinta Bella Vista could be the place for the ceremony. Still under construction, it however has an area framed by proud plane trees, offering dazzling views over the villages and the Atlantic, perfectly isolated and utterly romantic. Taking some snapshots in the afternoon light (the preferred time of the wedding) I was immediately taken. Fairy tale here we come. D&D seemed equally thrilled after they saw the pictures in the golden afternoon glow and from there our imagination just run wild.

Doreen bombarded me with ideas and pictures she found online and slowly the wedding took shape. Rustic vintage was the style to be. I started to envision all the day of the wedding, from the arrival of our guests, the entrance of the bride to  a sunset picnic and a home-cooked dinner. I wanted everything to be special, unforgettable and I wanted surprises everywhere. That’s how I thought of an open jeep, filled with hay for seats to shuttle the guests. The ceremony place was decorated like a living room in the wild, with a special photo-booth made from old frames. An artist friend painted a queen-sized sheet with a big heart, to be cut by the young lovers, an old german tradition. From the boy’s boutonniere which was handmade by a village lady, the tile-style wedding cake and tile cookies, to the wooden signs with sweet messages, everything was made with love for love. The picnic in Adraga beach gave the perfect photo opportunity and we felt like on the set of an old movie.

When the delighted party returned back home to Matalva, dinner was already prepared in a sea of candles. We celebrated late into the night, thankful to be part of such a special moment. I wish D&D to be always as happy as on this day and I know that magic is everywhere where there is love. I also want to add, that magic is not that easy to be captured, but our photographers Matt and Lena did just that. They saved the magic for everyday. Thank you and everyone that helped us to make this dream become true.

Pousada Santa Maria do Bouro Wedding

Despite a few hiccups – scratch that – a lot of hiccups in their planning process, these two sweeties managed to pull off the ultimate “I do.” Swapping vows at 12th century monastery Pousada Santa Maria do Bouro, it was a destination wedding dream-come-true all captured by Piteira Photography. Get lost in all the gorgeousness right over here!

From the Bride… Our wedding day was absolutely beyond any dream I could have had. Getting there, however, was an absolute disaster. Everything that could go wrong did. From my husband almost not being allowed on the plane (check your passport expiry dates!), to the Portuguese consulate’s system breaking almost preventing us from getting our marriage licence, to hospital visits and missing table numbers. We somehow made it through and were surrounded by amazing people making it unforgettable. We were lucky enough to find wonderful people to help us through the process. We could not have done it without Graça the hotel manager and our photographers Kerry and Luis who kept us sane.

We had an intimate wedding of 44 people in the beautiful Pousada Santa Maria do Bouro in Amares, a 12th century monastery. We felt at peace once we found it. Everything fell into place after that. We wanted to let the natural beauty of the place speak for itself so we had minimal decor of white and green flowers, with some touches of orange throughout to echo the oranges trees we were surrounded by. Our vision for the wedding was a simple we wanted an elegant retreat where we can shower our loved ones with the things we love best in life: good food, good music, good wine, and good company. It was hard to keep our numbers small, but essential for our vision.

The ceremony was under a canopy built by my parents, we brought the bamboo from Canada and the traditional Jewish tallit was my father’s which was tied on top. The aisles were lined with Hydrangeas, the flower of the Azores, where José was born. The mountains did the rest. My husband’s best friend David translated the Portuguese civil ceremony and we had a humanist rabbi for the Jewish ceremony. The ceremony ended with an impromptu eferria (chant) from Coimbra. It was magical.

Our passion in life is food, so we searched far and wide for the best chef in Portugal to create our dream menu. We ditched the wedding cake and had a 6 course dinner instead. We also wanted to spend time with all of our guests so we decided to eat one course with each table. It was perfect, always too fast, but we really got to enjoy the evening with everyone and it was a great reset button to make sure that we remembered every moment of the wedding. After dinner we danced the night (and morning) away. Our band even learnt the traditional Jewish celebration song Chava Nagila. The evening was a perfect combination of José and I, and our two cultures. We loved every moment of it.

Our day was everything we hoped for, and it would not have happened if we did not stick to our vision of what we wanted. Staying true to who you are as an individual, and couple, is the most important advice I could give. That, and being grateful for the day itself no matter what happens.

Portugal Styled Shoot from Karson Butler Events + WIUP + Winners!

With the weekend right around the corner, this styled shoot from Karson Butler Events and brancoprata couldn’t have come at a better time. It’s filled to the gills with easy elegance and Mediterranean charm — making it the perfect dose of pretty to start a Friday night off right. So go ahead and get cozy in the full gallery plus keep an eye peeled for this week’s lucky winners. Happy weekend! xoxo

From Karson Butler Events…. On our previous two trips to Portugal, we fell in love with the Jardim do Núncio at the Penha Longha Resort, one of our absolute favorite properties in the country. The garden dates back to the XVI century when it was used as a place for contemplation and is unlike any event space we’ve seen before. We had longtime been fans of Brancoprata (thank you blogosphere for connecting us!) and over the course of planning calls and emails collaborating on an upcoming wedding together we fast became friends, even though we had never met in person.

Sofia and I decided it would be fun post-wedding to put together a mini-style shoot before we departed Sintra. Our friends at Penha Longa were gracious enough to lend us their space and we enlisted the help of Tania at T Bakes. We were introduced to Tania through Maggie & Jess at Maggie Austin Cake, who Tania had trained under the year before here in the United States. Tania, who is also located in Porto, was practically neighbors with Brancoprata (also from Porto) and we were so happy to bring these Portuguese super-stars together.

The only design direction we gave everyone was to be inspired by Portuguese tiles with blue being our primary color palette and a few copper accents. The shoot was so fabulous because it wasn’t overly contrived; we all collaborated onsite together and when you put talented people together magic happens. To say that T Bakes knocked our socks off with the cake is an understatement. The hand-painted tiles on the cake we’re so incredible and it was better than we could have imagined. The cake really anchored our shoot and we’re forever grateful for the time and energy that went into each brush stroke. Sofia’s flowers we’re so dreamy and to see her assemble arrangements on the spot was nothing short of amazing.

Sofia is an incredible floral partner! Every time we stole a peek behind Andre’s camera, we squealed with delight. How he captures such beauty behind the lense is breathtaking and inspiring. What a gift he has! When we talk about European wedding industry super-stars, Brancoprata & T Bakes are at the top of our list. We had such a great time – and hopefully you’ll love these images as much as we do! Designing this inspiration shoot was pure joy for us – we didn’t have a big agenda or a crazy shot list; we styled with materials we literally found onsite (the pottery chargers, pastries and copper bud vases were things we picked up in shops around the town center that week) and the design came together organically. Designing just for fun with our new friends – we couldn’t think of a better way to end our Portugal trip.

Rustic Elegance in Portugal from Branco Prata + Anneli Marinovich Photography

I am basically obsessed with everything Sofia of Branco Prata touches, so when I saw this pretty -as-can-be Portugal shoot I stopped everything I was doing to soak it all in. Because between the flowers, the scenery, the gorgeous tablescape and the perfect stationery – I can barely contain my happiness. Add the fact that Anneli Marinovich‘s images are so beautiful I could cry, and ladies and gents, we have a winner on our hands. See it all here.

From AnneliWorking with amazing Portuguese stylist Sofia from Branco Prata, we came up with the concept of a rustic bridal shoot set at one of the most beautiful wedding venues in Mafra, Portugal – Quinta de Sant’Ana. Making the most of the golden afternoon sunlight and yellow walls at the venue, the shoot was warm and definitely inspired by Portugal – showcasing rustic candle holders & Portuguese tiles on the sweetheart table, as well as stationery designed by Sofia from Branco Prata, drawing inspiration from Portuguese tile patterns. The bride’s bouquet was also quite rustic and incorporated lots of orange and yellow to tie in with the overall look & feel of the shoot. With two looks and a beautiful wedding gown from Sabina Motasem, our bride wore a soft & colourful flower crown at first, followed by a more elegant hairstyle & a gorgeous beaded belt to add some sparkle to the gown. Our groom looked dashing in his dark navy suit & bow tie, with a button hole pulling through the golden tones from the shoot. The overall feel of the shoot will hopefully inspire brides & grooms to have their destination wedding at a gorgeous outdoor wedding venue like this one, where the best of Portugal – beautiful vineyards and a rustic estate overlook the village of Gradil creating the perfect setting for a relaxed, outdoor wedding inspired by the rustic beauty of Portugal.

Portuguese Monastery Wedding by Piteira Photography

For all of the weddings we feature, its often the simple, sweet, understated affairs that make us squeeze the hands of the one we love a bit tighter. Because it’s in weddings where simplicity reigns queen, that you can truly feel the love. The joy. The nearly bursting with excitement energy. And this wedding, photographed by Piteira Photography, is nothing if not utterly joyful. And quite pretty to look at too. Just make sure you click here to see the rest of the story.

From Piteira PhotographyIt sounds like a cliché, but I swear it’s true — Joana and João’s wedding was truly magical. The location was the ancient monastery of São Cristovão de Lafões, which dates back to the 12th century. Even now, in the 21st century, it is lost in the middle of nowhere in the dense forests of central Portugal, so you can easily imagine the isolation and mystical existence of the monks who inhabited this monastery throughout the Middle Ages. If those walls could talk, the stories they could tell… The couple exchanged their vows under an orange tree in the central courtyard, and just to add to the romance and mystery, as the ceremony was about to end, a thick mist swept down the mountains and surrounded the entire area in a blanket of cloud. While this isn’t something that brides normally dream about for their wedding day, it honestly didn’t feel out of place.

Joana and João are both designers and together with a talented team of friends, they created every single piece of stationery and decor, all of which made this wedding truly exceptional. Instead of a traditional wedding invitation, they decided to tell the story of how they met in the form of a handwritten letter. Joana had her version, and João had his, and they wrote out the originals with an old calligraphy pen and then had copies made to send out to their guests. These two were an absolute dream to work with. They gave us all the time that we needed, took such good care of us and made us feel so welcome. We feel truly blessed to have been a part of this magical wedding.

From Michele of Michele Beckwith PhotographyThey met while attending university in Portugal. Adriano pursued Andrea until finally one day she answered Adriano’s request for a kiss. After graduation, the couple moved to London, where their relationship and careers continued to grow stronger. Adriano finally popped the question one afternoon on a vintage steam engine train while traveling through the English countryside. After seven years in London, they decided to try a new place before they fell too hopelessly in love with London and never left. So they packed up their bags and relocated to San Francisco. From there, Andrea, the art director for Ode Magazine, planned her Portugal destination wedding for June from across the pond. She had a vision in her head and spent countless hours making sure all the details were perfect. She handmade dozens of paper flowers that would encircle the ceremony area and selected (and shipped!) all the accessories for the cocktail hour and dinner tables. The couple also has impeccable fashion taste, she in her Amsale dress and he in his Gucci suit. Pair all that with a gorgeous estate, and you have one stylish wedding!

From the Bride… When Rogerio and I decided to get married, Pousada de Santa Maria do Bouro was a natural choice for the venue (actually, since I was a teenager I had been dreaming of tying the knot here). This historic luxury hotel is just beautiful and the surrounding landscape is breathtaking… It is located in the north of Portugal, between the city of Braga and the Gerês mountain range, and results from the restoration of a former Cistercian Monastery of the XII century, in a remarkable work of the 2011 Pritzker Prize winner Eduardo Souto Moura. Since many guests were coming from other parts of the country and abroad (US, UK, Italy and Netherlands), we booked the whole hotel for them to stay overnight. Another easier choice was Brancoprata. I had been following this team’s work for quite some time, and knew they provided the services we wanted with the best desired quality: invitations and paper goods, flowers and styling, photography and babysitting were services we booked all at once, which made the whole wedding planning a lot easier.

One of the most creative parts for us was planning the ceremony. Both Rogerio and I had never attended a non-religious ceremony in Portugal… However, with some guidance from the (most amazing) officiant, we came up with an idyllic ceremony. We can’t even describe how it feels to have your most loved friends singing in choir accompanied by a piano…

Since it is always a treat to eat in this historic hotel, choosing the menu was probably the hardest task in the whole wedding planning! Dinner was served in the cloisters, as well as the wedding cake, which just felt magical… In the old kitchen wing, surrounded by giant hearths under a soaring ceiling, guests enjoyed dancing, drinks and a photo booth with several props that kept everyone entertained all night. As wedding favors for our guests, we offered plants and local honey, a traditional product from Gerês mountains. Overall, our wedding day was like we were dreaming of: relaxed, fun and memorable.

From Piteira PhotographyCatia and Jamie, who hail from Madeira (Portugal) and Manchester (UK), respectively, aimed for a do-it-yourself destination wedding, with a vintage feel and, wherever possible, drawing upon locally sourced components and small local businesses. Their wedding took place on Comporta  Beach, on the west coast of Portugal, just south of Lisbon, the capital city.

The beach and venue has a special meaning for Catia and Jamie as it formed an important part of the early blossoming of their relationship. Four years ago, in the early stages of their long distance relationship, Jamie visited Catia, who, at this stage, was living with her mother in nearby Setubal. Catia chose to show Jamie the Alentejo Coast, starting in Troia and working south. Comporta Beach was one of the first places they visited. The early stages of their relationship combined with a beautifully quiet beach, facing the Atlantic ocean, and a fantastic restaurant – forged special memories for them both.

Instead of the traditional paper invitations, and because the majority of their guests were spread out around the world, the couple decided to create a wedding website instead, where people could RSVP and find out all the relevant details. All decorations were chosen, designed and implemented by Catia and her team of talented mother, sisters, father and uncles.

Gifts for the guest comprised of locally created honey and Moscatel, bought in the Setubal Market. Each gift was DIY decorated by the couple and their families with vintage fabrics and paper string. Family linen was used for the ceremony table and the pots used to contain guest’s table flowers were discovered abandoned, outside a pottery mill that had recently closed. Reclaimed jam jars were used for candles. All flowers were bought, in bulk, from the local Setubal market and were chosen for their small carbon footprint and because they typified the end of summer season. Design and arrangements directed by Catia’s mother/sisters. Decorations were implemented, on the day, by a frantic team, of father, aunties, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

We knew as soon as we met this awesome couple that their wedding was going to be the highlight of our season, and we were right. Their big day was a true reflection of who they are, individually and as a couple, and we love the way they made everything just fit so perfectly… they re-invented the rules of a wedding day to suit them and their style, taking out traditions that didn’t mean anything to them, and adding in things that they felt were important. And through it all they never lost sight of the bigger picture, there was no stress and drama, no freaking out about things not being “perfect” … the whole day just flowed so beautifully and naturally and we feel seriously lucky to have been a part of it all.
