Why Not Have an E-Session During Your Destination Wedding Weekend?

This darling couple planned to say “I do” in Italy, so they decided to have an engagement session just days before their nuptials. As their photographer Jen Huang says, “Why not when you have all your vendors in one gorgeous location?” Take note, destination Brides-to-be! The photos of this e-session at a historic Italian villa are sweet, playful, and all kinds of beautiful, so head to the gallery for more.

From Jen Huang PhotographyPlayful, fun, and fashion forward couple, Lora and Eric, were photographed on the beautiful grounds of Villa Cetinale in Sovicille, Tuscany. An inspiration to any destination couple who might be considering a portrait shoot during their wedding week – why not when you have all your vendors in one gorgeous location? Loved their carefree style paired with their casual yet elegant attire, like those purple pumps and that powder blue dress from Net-a-Porter. Always plan to dress up a little if you’re being photographed at a historic Italian villa.

A Multicultural Summer Celebration in Tuscany

With a Dutch groom and a Vietnamese bride living in Switzerland, this Tuscan destination wedding is truly a blend of cultures! The bride and groom enlisted the help of Trouwen in Toscane and FunkyBird Wedding Design to create their big day, and they incorporated each country represented in the couple’s love story. From the ancient Italian hamlet which served as their venue to the pops of red – a lucky and celebratory color in the Vietnamese culture – in the floral arrangements, FunkyBird Photography captured these special details. See them all in the Vault!

From Trouwen in ToscaneAlthough Nhi and Wesley are a Dutch/Vietnamese couple, they’ve lived their happy lives in Switzerland for years now and planned their Tuscan wedding from there. We guided them through the choice of the wedding venue and the wedding location, as they where not able to come to Tuscany to venue shop as most couples do, due to their busy jobs. As Borgo Petrognano is one of our favorite venues, it was the one we recommended to this beautiful couple along with the chapel of Semifonte, located just one kilometer from this ancient hamlet, which was the perfect location for the civil wedding. We feel really lucky to have know this fantastic couple, and we ere really happy that they trusted us to organize their whole wedding from a distance.

From FunkyBird Wedding DesignI love when a couple gives importance to the floral arrangements – in the end flowers really do make everything look so much more beautiful and richer. For the floral arrangements, Nhi and Wesley wanted a combination of lilac and peach with some brighter pops of color. The blossom bubble spray roses seemed like the perfect choice to start with. They’re such delicate little garden roses, but at the same time they will bloom for quite a long time without water, making them a great choice for bouquets and accessories.

For the boutonnieres and corsages, we paired lilac lysianthus with small peach rosebuds. Whenever a couple wants a lilac/purple themed wedding, I think clematis flowers. Since they’re climbers, they give lovely movement to any type of arrangement.

Clematis looked perfect in the bouquet, and we decided to add some miss piggy and peach avalanche roses. Since red is considered a lucky color in Vietnamese culture and is used for most celebrations, we added beautiful crocosmia stems to the ceremony arrangement and table flowers. Crocosmia has a golden yellow/orange base flowing into bright carmine red tips. Each stem has a lot of small blossoms and looks very cheerful yet delicate.

Tall white candelabras with full arrangements on the top and glass vases at the bottom with flowers and candles were provided for each table at the reception. All together, we created a gorgeous and elegant look.

From FunkyBird PhotographyIt was really great and easy to work with Nhi and Wesley, especially because Nhi worked as a model in the past. The time passed quickly while photographing the two of them! This part of Tuscany is my favorite because there are so many places where you can take pictures, plus the lighting during late summer afternoons is beautiful and puts everything on an even higher level.

Inspired by the Prettiest Shades of Gray in Tuscany

Gray is my favorite color, and Italy is my most beloved destination, so I’m obviously in love with every. single. image. of this Tuscany wedding inspiration session, captured by Thecablookfotolab. Between the gorgeous, gray silk dress and the romantic stationery suite, gray just might become your next obsession, too. Get lost in the beauty of it all right here.

From Ekaterina of OhMarriageTuscany has always been an inspirational destination, but when we saw pictures of the small hotel near Florence – Valdirose – we immediately realized that this was the place where we definitely needed to have our shoot! It’s so cozy, with lots of lovely details, textures, and shades. When we went there, we felt the special atmosphere of the place thanks to its owners, the wonderful Irene and Paolo Berni.

We organized the wedding dinner on the beautiful glass terrace of the house, inspired by textures and the simple interior of the space. We used shades of gray, ranging from light gray to almost black. We chose a dark turquoise hue for the accent color, which you’ll see in the textured plates. In general, we focused on textures – non-uniformly dyed candles, stone-looking vases, and ceramic plates, calligraphy on textured watercolor paper.

Our bride was dressed in a neat cotton sundress and then changed into a simple wedding dress in our color palette – the slip, a dark gray silk, and the top, a sheer weightless tulle. The look was complemented by an accentual crown in silver with stylized vine leaves. For the groom, we chose a classic look – a dark suit and light shirt in a simple design. This emphasized the groom’s style and the concept of the shoot.

The ceremony took place in the beautiful olive tree grove next to the house. We arranged the ceremony near the outdoor, stone stairs and decorated with several baskets of grape leaves, roses, and hanging bunches of green grapes. We used the same florals for the bride’s bouquet and the reception dinner, adding in lisianthuses, helleborus, and sweet peas. We ended the shoot in the Tuscan vineyards at sunset. What could be more romantic?

30 Guests in Tuscany for a Dream Destination Wedding

Hi SMP readers! Blogger Bride, Nicole here and I’m excited to reflect back on our wedding now that we have been married a few months. Even though I’m a wedding photographer, I have to admit that I underestimated just how much goes into planning (peek back at my entire journey!) We wanted our wedding to be elegant but unfussy, joyful and intentional.  And since we love to travel, no one was surprised when we chose to have a destination wedding.

And a look back at the entire wedding weekend!

We welcomed our 30 guests to Villa Petrolo in Tuscany with the most Italian of welcome cocktails, an Aperol spritz, followed by an informal pizza and prosecco gathering. It was a fun, low-key kick off to wedding festivities and the perfect opportunity for old friends to reconnect and new friendships to begin. Our goal was to create a relaxed weekend in a beautiful setting and for the wedding to feel more like being hosted at an intimate and lively dinner party. We invited all of our guests to stay with us at the villa and surrounding farmhouses. The next day we all hopped on a shuttle bus to explore Pienza, a charming hill town in the Val d’Orcia known for its delicious pecorino cheese and Renaissance architecture. That evening we got on the shuttle again to Castello di Meleto in Chianti for our rehearsal dinner, with wine flowing and hilarious and sweet informal toasts from friends. Hosting our rehearsal dinner in a frescoed room of a medieval castle was one of the most memorable events of the weekend.

Our wedding day was even more emotional than I expected. The ceremony took place on the steps in front of the villa, led by our dear friend who crafted a beautiful testament to our understanding of love, culture, and marriage. Our chuppah was decorated with olive branches, and the top was graced by a tallit (prayer shawl) brought from Israel by Daniel’s grandfather, while beneath our feet was a Moroccan handira (marriage blanket) we had purchased while traveling in Marrakech. We stood under the chuppah and committed to choosing each other that day and every day forward. Short ceremonies have become more popular, but we were happy to have a 45 minute ceremony that included circling each other, the seven blessings read in Hebrew and a modernized English interpretation, long weepy personal vows, three poetry readings, and a slightly less conventional “science reading” (Daniel was a biology major in college after all).

At the end of the ceremony, Daniel stepped on a glass and together we jumped over a broom! There are many explanations for why the groom breaks a glass, traditionally to remember the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem or to acknowledge the fragility of life and brokenness in the world even on such a happy day. We embraced the idea of a symbol that connects one generation to another. Jumping the broom is an African-American wedding custom that dates back to slavery. Slave marriages were not legally recognized but this act granted dignity to seeking love and domesticity within the confines of bondage. Much like breaking the glass, this is both a joyful moment and a powerful reminder of cultural memory.

We tried to make decisions for details that reflected our aesthetic and our budget. One thing I was excited about was investing in decor that could also be used in our new home since we bought a house just before our trip to Italy! The copper candlesticks and Silk and Willow table runner are now on our dining table at home, for example. Instead of hiring a florist, we chose to use olive leaves as decor, with me and my bridesmaids carrying olive leaves gathered in bunches for bouquets tied together with Silk and Willow ribbon. Working on our invitations gave me the inspiration to finally study calligraphy in order to do the calligraphy design for our invite and hand calligraph the addresses on each envelope! I used handmade paper with its luxe organic feel and found a wonderful and affordable letterpress printer. One of my favorite moments during wedding planning was when I had a minor melt-down to Daniel, saying that I should have just hired someone because my calligraphy didn’t look professional, and he told me that it looked beautiful but more importantly, that it was more meaningful since it was created by me. Our invitation felt more like a handwritten letter.

I was certain I would choose a colorful untraditional dress before I went shopping, but I ended up choosing a white lace dress. The moment I put it on I felt like a bride, so in the end, I wasn’t quite as daring as I thought I would be! Thanks to Rent the Runway, I had fun gowns for the welcome reception and rehearsal dinner, and on our wedding day I slipped into a stylish reception dress just after cocktail hour. I wanted to invest in accessories that fit with my style and that I could continue wearing after the wedding, so I found simple brass earrings at an Oakland boutique, a brass bangle at Marisa Mason, and dusty pink heeled boots from Anthropologie.

We were so lucky that two of my dear wedding industry friends made the trip to Italy with us! The weekend would not have been the success that it was without Nira of Amber Events making everything happen and Kristina Adams behind the camera. I still don’t know how Nira managed everything she did, with friendly composure and grace throughout! Kristina documented the weekend so organically and made sure that taking photos didn’t take us away from the party for too long! Her luminous film style captured the moments of our wedding in a way that we will cherish for years to come.

The following day was warm and sunny and we had a leisurely post-wedding brunch in the courtyard where dinner was meant to be the night before. In the afternoon guests went on walks on the property amid olive groves and vineyard-covered hills, and Villa Petrolo hosted a wine tasting for us. On our final evening my sister, who is a private chef, cooked a delicious farewell dinner.

As a wedding photographer who has seen so many different kinds of weddings, I think it’s important to note that the most important tip about wedding planning is to be authentic to you and your relationship. Don’t feel you have to abide by every tradition or unsolicited opinion! Throw “must” and “should” out the window. At least that’s what guided me, and I already wish I could go back and do it all over again.

Happy Planning!

xo,

Nicole

Colorful Inspiration from the Hills of Tuscany

This inspiration shoot is not only a work of art from the lens of Thecablookfotolab, but a true ode to the breathtaking colors of Tuscany. Inspired by vibrant shades you’ll find any time of year, Bianco Weddings designed every detail to reflect this Italian landscape and the results are so worthy of a place on your pin boards. Dive in right here!

From Nazym Kombarova of Bianco Weddings… Our concept for this photo shoot was to show a different side of Tuscany as very bright, colorful, energy-filled place. We wanted to create a shoot that speaks to the story of a couple’s love and at the same time, we wanted to tell a story of Tuscany, where every color has its own meaning and significance.

Yellow is featured in the rolling golden wheat fields of summer and also represents the warm Tuscan sun rising up over the hills, vineyards and olive groves all year long.

Look at sky at sunset or mists in the morning and you’ll see all shades of pastel pink! Purple shades are here in the beginning of autumn, and dark purple is the color of the olives that are gathered at the end of the season.

And of course green. Green is the evergreen color of olive and cypress trees, as well as rosemary and sage, which you can find together in any plate of the local cuisine. Try to describe Tuscany without using a single color reference and we bet you won’t be able to do so!

An Intimate Italian Wedding Worthy of Our Wanderlust Dreams

From the Bride… Steven and I met in Texas, just by chance. Turns out, it was the chance of a lifetime. From that moment on, we started to build a life together and never looked back. A few years later, Steven proposed in Big Sur on a California road trip up Highway 1. To no one’s surprise, I said yes.

How we decided to get married in Italy is still not completely clear to me, but it was the best decision we could have ever made. It was the perfect place to gather our closest family and friends and enjoy what we love most; eating, drinking, laughter and exploring new places.

We were married in San Galgano, a roofless 12th century abbey, on a warm and beautiful day in late September. The mayor of a nearby town performed the ceremony and honored us with the most poetic and kind words we could have ever hoped for. It was one of the most breathtaking moments of our lives; even our guitarist joined in the happy tears.

We had rented a villa in Tuscany for the week, and there, under a sky of twinkling lights, we had the most spectacular dinner feast. The traditional Italian meal was served family style and wine flowed freely late into the night. That evening, my mother presented us with the most wonderful gift we could have imagined. Unbeknownst to us, she had asked each of our dear guests to share their favorite memories of both Steven and me during dinner. Throughout the evening’s celebration, the people we love most in the world, shared stories that made us laugh, made us cry, and left us feeling so incredibly blessed to have such amazing people share this truly remarkable day with us. Our wedding day is something that we think about often and we know we will cherish forever.

For us, Italy was a dream; something out of a fairy tale. It took a lot of faith and trust to plan a wedding plus a week full of group activities and events from a distance (Mom in Michigan, me in Seattle, wedding planner in Italy), but it was truly one of the most extraordinary experiences of our lives. We are eternally grateful to all those who traveled so far and did so much to make our week in Italy an unparalleled experience that we will hold in our hearts always.

A Wedding Under the Tuscan Sun

It’s easy to see why couples like Courtnay and Deyhven opt for a destination wedding. Especially when it’s set in Tuscany with their dearest friends and family along to celebrate. Chic Weddings in Italy made sure their guests were treated to the best food and wine Italy has to offer, and an al fresco dinner beneath the stars was the ultimate reception setting. From Chic Weddings in Italy… We met Courtnay and Deyhven in 2015 through a lovely Skype call. They were sweet, in love and very keen on getting married in our beautiful country. I remember chatting with them and thinking that they were really a committed couple and really sure about their idea to have a destination wedding.

Their priorities for the wedding celebration focused on enjoying a good time with their guests, treating them to fine wine and exquisite Italian dishes. They also wanted to have a recognized civil wedding in Italy and celebrate this important day not with a symbolic ceremony but with a real contract and signatures.

The palette for the wedding was blush pink, white, and light tones of gray, using a touch of gold which was used throughout the use of the gold candelabras depicted in the images.

The bride and the groom were very elegant and very beautiful and the night passed with a dinner under the Tuscan stars, among friends and family all dressed up for the occasion.

Courtnay and Deyhven are very much in love and that’s what we love about this couple. We could feel their love in their eyes and on the wedding day they were very relaxed that it was a great pleasure getting to know them in this special day of their lives.

From Bride… Evan and I met seven years ago when we were both working at a restaurant – Evan was working as a bartender temporarily and I was paying my way through university. We were friends first and then quickly became more.. after eight months we moved to the city and got our first apartment downtown. We both began our careers doing what we love: Evan as a Construction Manager and myself in Marketing and graphic design. Over the next few years we grew as a couple and as people – we went through great times and some intense personal struggles, but kept the focus on our life together and each other. We would always come out strong no matter what life through at us. Little did we know that it was this mentality that would prove to be extremely helpful when the biggest challenge we would face yet was thrown at us unexpectedly…

Two years ago while working in his dream job as a Construction Superintendent, Evan broke his neck when an improperly secured load of flooring weighing 3500lbs fell off of a delivery truck onto his head and neck. Evan was instantly paralyzed from the shoulders down, and was left without full use of his arms and no use of his hands or legs. He was lucky to have survived his accident without any head trauma. After five months in the hospital and intensive rehabilitation, we began our new life together – although very, very different, nothing changed our outlook on life or how much we love each other. Evan is now confined to a wheelchair and needs 24 hour care and assistance, all of which I do myself as we decided early on we didn’t want to live with nurses and care aids – we wanted to lead normal, private lives!

After Evan returned home from the hospital we packed up our life and moved temporarily to Southern California to attend a world renowned rehabilitation facility for five months in order to help him gain his strength and focus. While we were there, Evan proposed to me at our favourite restaurant in San Diego called Juniper and Ivy – completely by surprise! He had designed my ring himself with Dino at Harlings Jewellers in Vancouver while he was in California – he even had it shipped to California without me knowing with help from his therapist!

We decided to have our wedding in Florence because we had planned a trip to Europe BEFORE his accident happened that we had never been able to do – and we did not want his injury to stop us from visiting all the places we want to go. Our passion together is great food and wine and Florence, Italy was at the top of our list for destinations. We found an amazing wheelchair accessible seven bedroom villa located 45 minutes outside of Florence in the Tuscan countryside called Castel D’Acone, and the rest just fell into place! Our wedding was intimate as we decided to turn the whole thing into a group European vacation with our closest family and friends for the week. The wedding was perfect and our entire week there was like a dream. For our honeymoon we decided to stay in Europe and visited Rome, Barcelona, The South of France and Amsterdam.. and enjoyed every minute of our travels.

We hope to meet other couples from around the world who are going through similar situations as us. We are soon launching a new website soon as a vessel to connect with people we can help, and let others know that you CAN live your life to the fullest as a happy couple – even after devastation and loss.

From Super Tuscan Wedding PlannersOn the 20th of August, in a really hot summer day, we celebrated the love of Sarah and Paul! They decided to get married in Tuscany because they fell in love with this region: landscape, people, food and culture. And they decided to share all of this with family and friends in this romantic and rustic chic wedding day! Stunning locations: Horti Leonini, gardens in San Quirico d’Orcia, hosted the ceremony and a hidden Borgo in the middle of Val d’Orcia, was chosen for the stay and the wedding party.

When we arrived at the Borgo, that morning, we smelt the excitement in the air. All the guests were staying there and while everyone was getting ready we breathed a festive air and could feel the real connection, bonding and closeness among all of them.

Sarah was surrounded by her bridesmaids all the time and assisted by her mum step by step. They were all together in the same room getting hair and makeup done to share also this special moment. The pastel colors palette chosen for flowers suits perfectly to the delicacy of these moments.
Paul was ready long before, and took his time to try and chill out with his friends playing pool. He and his best men were handsome with their blue suits and their pink ties and pocket squares. But nothing compares to their colored striped socks, such a nice touch!

When the ceremony time came, Vintage Buses were ready to bring the 70 guests to San Quirico d’Orcia, at Horti Leonini. While waiting, key parts were the parasols and the hats, essential details studied to let people enjoy the moments under the tuscan sun! The Bride arrived with an iconic Vintage Bentley. All eyes were on her!

The civil ceremony was held in the center of the characteristic radial design made of triangular flowerbed, under the statue of Cosimo III dei Medici. The ceremony attracted a lot of curious people but we all still felt the sense of something intimate, just because the only thing that mattered for everyone there was Sarah and Paul’ love. Bride and Groom offered an after ceremony drink to their guests and left San Quirico on their Bentley.

Back to the Borgo, with the vintage coaches, guests were ready for aperitif and dinner. One of the reasons why Sarah and Paul chose Tuscany for their wedding finally came out: it was time to taste the italian food and wine! And finally came out also other details: vintage bicycles and guest book corner, tableau de marriage and table decor in rustic chic style.

After dinner, time for a super wedding cake, for gelato and Cantucci, to bring a little bit of Tuscany also in the desserts! And, for sure, time for dancing to conclude an unforgettable wedding day with the stunning landscapes of Val d’Orcia in the background!

Bridal Perfection on the Tuscan Countryside

People always ask me what I would have done differently if I were to be given a wedding re-do. Well, I’d start with the guest list. 200 people – many of whom I didn’t even get a chance to say hello to – filled our ballroom and while I loved the support and the pure love that permeated the day – a wedding built for two would have been just as magical. And this one, crafted by Chiara Sernesi of Weddings in Tuscany, with photos by Esther and Gabe, is as spectacular as they come.

From the vendors… Tuscany is one of the most popular elopement destinations in Italy. Most of couples get marry during the summer months, but the Fall season has its own advantages, namely in the lack of crowds and tourists and in the beautiful colors of the landscape. And that was my first thought when Esther and Gabe, the talented husband and wife photographers from The Bell Weddings, contacted me for a shoot in Tuscany.

The gown from the Atelier of Marianna Lanzilli , the beautiful shoes from bella belle shoes that paired with the dress so perfectly The table and its warmly coloured palette, the flowers that Gianluca from Heaven Flowers crafted, the venue and its delicately hued wall whose nuances elegantly match the color of the season in a harmonious symphony.

I used the Fall palette of the season with browns and neutrals being the the prevailing tones, along with shades of red from the vineyards and the foliage, lilac and pastel for the sunset and greens which you can find throughout Tuscany. The bride’s golden dress added a magical finality to the look. And, Esther and Gabe’s attention to details and eye for creative shots is something to be envied.

Two Stylish Gents, One Incredible Italian Engagement

“Stylish” doesn’t even begin to describe the engagement session of Tom and Tim. In fact, these two gents took their impeccable sense of fashion and paired that with the backdrop of Tuscany for absurdly romantic photos captured by Rebecca Yale. Join us on their trek through Italy with lots more right over here.

From Rebecca Yale Photography My favorite thing about engagement sessions is they get to be a little slice of life so is there anything better than a destination engagement session which can perfectly capture the memories of an incredible trip exploring the Tuscan countryside? I spent a lovely Fall weekend photographing the incredibly sweet (and fashionable) Tom and Tim at Il Borro, a 1000-year-old castle estate, and medieval village in Tuscany owned by the Ferragamo family.

Tim, a former bronze medalist Olympic Ice Skater, was celebrating his master’s degree from NYU and of course their recent engagement. Tom popped the question at the historic Chanler in Newport, RI, where the couple will say their I Do’s next year. The trip was spent wine tasting, sightseeing in Cinque Terre, truffle hunting, shopping and eating way too much incredible Italian food. Minus a little rain in Cinque Terre we lucked out with a perfectly gorgeous Fall weekend, getting to enjoy the bright red leaves crawling up the wine caves and the perfect little breeze as we explored the medieval town.

The Proposal

From the Grooms… Planning an engagement proposal is very involved as there are many moving parts. For Tim and I, it started about 18 months before I actually proposed. In a non-traditional move, I mentioned to Tim that one day I could see us getting engaged. However, it would happen only after he went back to school to pursue a Masters in his field. With the proposal out there, I assumed it would be at least two to three years before we would potentially have serious conversation around being married; after all, at this time, marriage equality wasn’t even passed in New York yet and it was well before the Supreme Court decision made same-sex legal across all 50 states. But, Tim applied and was accepted into NYU Stern’s Masters program by that Fall 2015.

During the time that Tim was in school, I spent a great deal of time looking into unique options for a potential engagement. Ideas ranged from watches to cuff links, to bands, to an actual diamond, to just words. At the end, I worked with a jewelry designer in designing a unique diamond ring for Tim for our future engagement. This process took six months from start to finish. With the ring completed in late March 2016, I reached out to his parent’s to schedule a weekend together in early April while Tim was preparing for a series of exams with his programs. I arrived at his parents’ home in Arlington Heights, IL with a bottle of champagne and ring in box. His parents had a very strong idea of why I was there as their smiles were cheek to cheek upon walking in. Tim wasn’t aware that I flew to be with his parents for the weekend specifically; I mentioned that I was in the area for work and figured I’d stop by and spend time with them while he focused on his school work.

I asked Tim’s parents for their blessing to have the honor of asking Tim to marry me. His parents were beyond excited and we began celebrating from that point forward until that Sunday, which is when I headed back to New York to see Tim. Tim asked what exactly I was doing with his parents that weekend. I noted we were shopping for his graduation gift. So, upon returning home to New York on Sunday afternoon, Tim demanded that I share with him what I brought back for his graduation gift from his parents. The only thing I brought back was his ring.

Tim insisted on seeing the gift and went through all of my luggage. Fortunately, I had the ring in my pocket. I realized at this time that I was not safe in our home with the engagement ring – and with time, he was going to find it. So, we went for a long walk along the Hudson River. We ended up walking to where we first had cocktails together, Orient Express. We were the first guests of the day as they opened at 5:00pm. We ordered a cocktail and Tim inquired about his graduation gift from his parents. I started to laugh; I had no choice because of what I knew and he didn’t. Also because I was pretty sure that my perfectly planned proposal was about to be replaced by an impromptu proposal. Tim looked at me, grinned and asked what was so funny. I turned to him, took his hand, went into my pocket to pull out “nothing” and ask for his hand in marriage. Tim looked at me and sternly said, “this is not funny. You have repeatedly asked bent down on your knee before and proposed, you have repeatedly asked him in public for my hand, and you’re doing it again.” To which I replied, you’re right. Let me try one more time. So I went back in my pocket to search for the ring (mind you, I couldn’t find it in my pocket the first time as it was stuck in the crevice of the pocket) and presented Tim with a ring and a request for his hand in marriage. Tim was in shock and couldn’t believe it had actually happened. But it did. We toasted over another round of cocktails and made our way back to Perry Street to celebrate.

It wasn’t the proposal that I had spent the past few months planning in advance. However, I wouldn’t have changed it for the world as it brought us full circle from where we first fell love in one another to making our relationship “official” with a proposal.

The Dreamiest Al Fresco Destination Wedding EVER

What could possibly be better than a wedding in Tuscany? How about a wedding in Tuscany with Peter & Veronika behind the lens. Yeah, we’d say that tops the charts. An al fresco celebration complete with gelato and the dreamiest tablescape we’ve ever seen, it’s all waiting for you to fan favorite in The Vault!

From the Bride…I never imagined I would be married at a spectacular Agriturismo in the heart of Tuscany, Italy. If there is one thing I’ve learned from my husband, it’s that life is always full of surprises. I met Ben while we were both studying at the University of Toronto. Born and raised in Munich, Germany, he thought he would only stay in Canada for one year. Fast-forward five years, and Ben was not only still in Canada, but we were also engaged with two cats. So why Italy as our choice of destination? We each come from two very different (but amazing!) cultures. I am proud of my Canadian roots; and Ben is equally as proud of his Bavarian heritage. We wanted to have our wedding somewhere that was ‘neutral’ – not overly Canadian, and not overly German. In 2014, we rented a car and explored the picturesque hills of Tuscany, and it was love at first sight. Amazing meals, great wine, balmy weather, and beautiful scenery…we knew it would be the perfect location for us to tie the knot! And we could not have been more right.

Our main inspiration was one thing: family. We wanted an ambiance that was warm and inviting, with long tables that were reminiscent of family-style eating. We pictured our guests having a long, luxurious dinner together, with plenty of wine and smiles (in true Italian style). When we first visited Montelucci, we knew it was the perfect venue for us. It was both rustic and elegant, with an interesting history and lovely managers. We liked the fact that it was a working farm that produced great wine and olive oil, and this passion for freshness and sourcing local food came across in their meal preparation. They also had a beautiful garden area, and we knew right away that we would have our dinner and dancing beneath the stars, with the Tuscan hills as our backdrop.

Our colour palette was meant to reflect late summer, with bits of greenery, blush pink, off-white, fuchsia, and deeper burgundy accents. We also wanted to stay true to our Italian theme with garlands of olive leaves and garden roses. My maid of honour wore a blush pink dress, and our mothers also wore shades of nude and light pink. I also stuck with the tradition of ‘something old, something new…’ and was given a beautiful family heirloom: a white opal ring that my father had given to his mother when he was 18 years old. It was also important for me to have something that was made in Canada, which I found through the beautiful gold hair combs I wore. They were handmade in Vancouver, and they were the perfect addition to my bridal ensemble.

In the end, we decided to do a four-day wedding weekend for all of our guests, as many were traveling over eight hours, either by car or plane. And we were so happy with that decision: it was an amazing feeling watching 85 of our closest friends and family relaxing, chatting, laughing and enjoying themselves. The venue was the perfect fit for all of us, and we love that we created a weekend that everyone will look back on with fond memories. Although planning and organizing a destination wedding had it’s trying moments, everything executed even better than expected. All of the vendors we chose went above and beyond to make our day perfect, and we couldn’t be more happy with the final result. It was exactly what we hoped for, and more. The warmth and love from everyone who was part of our celebration was breathtaking, and it really was the perfect way to start the rest of our lives together!

From the Couple…What do you get when a boy from Nottingham, UK meets a girl from New York City? Robin from the ‘hood! And so this cross-continental love story between a forest boy and a gritty urban girl all began on a little app called Tinder, on the mystical island of Hong Kong.

After “swiping right” and matching with each other on Tinder in March of 2014, we cautiously met for after work drinks at Mario Batali’s Italian rooftop bar in the middle of Central, Hong Kong. By the time we met, we had both been through some arduous blind date dinners and were nearly ready to delete app completely.

What we both thought was going to be a quick drink turned into a moonlight dinner accompanied by the silly nonsensical banter exchanged between two people who speak very different variations of the otherwise common “English” language — for over six hours. We were both very surprised about how well we got on and also how very different we thought the other would be based solely on our Tinder profile photos. Insert the old adage “don’t judge a book by its cover”!

But what really cemented us was a life-changing moment in Lisa’s life. Just six months into our relationship, Lisa’s father unexpectedly passed away. As we are both thousands of miles away from home with no family nearby, Lisa needed strong support, patience and love and Paul stepped up to the challenge without a second thought. Still just early into the relationship, it was a true test for both of us; one that could have easily and understandably overtaken us.

Over the weeks and months, Paul took care of Lisa and made sure she was eating regularly, cradled her when she cried. Moreover, he took on Lisa’s greatest passion for photography (www. Wanderandlust.com) as his own so that she could keep that connection with her late-father, who was also an avid photographer.

From the Bride…Ever since my father handed me his old Nikon FM2 for my beginner photography class in high school, I would come home year after year to show him new stills of the world through the lens he passed on to me.

Having escaped the Nanking Massacre in his hometown at the age of four, survived through the Great Leap Forward in his 20’s, run from the Cultural Revolution and persecution by Mao’s Red Guards in his 30’s and then emigrating to the United States in his 40’s with nothing but a suitcase of clothing and books, my dad did not have many happy memories. But those moments that gave him warmth, and perhaps every now and then made him laugh, were carefully documented with his camera and filed into one of his photo archives.

With 50 years of age between us, photography was the only joy we truly shared. The time we spent over our photos (he with his printed albums and I with my iPad) was when we, but for mere moments, overcame the vast cultural divide between us.

We would spend hours going through his film snaps neatly arranged in albums and the colorful stories that came with them. Trekking Yellowstone Park’s forest trails in the 1970’s, shooting faces and NYC street scenes in the 1980’s, documenting family trips to Disney and Shanghai in the 1990’s.

As my dad hit his late-70’s, he became less and less mobile and even the lightest of DSLR cameras became too heavy to tote around. I carried the torch now: grainy film black and whites for high school – 1990’s, grinning friends acting older than our age – 2000’s, vibrant cities and varied landscapes – 2010’s. While his body slowed with age, his eyes continued to dance as if he were the one behind the lens, traversing through endless scenes in search of that perfect shot.

For months after my dad passed away, I kept my camera locked away in my dresser; we both laid as still as the moments it used to so avidly capture.

Paul picked up all these broken pieces and helped me rebuild my life and the shared passion I have with my father. He purchased his own equipment and planned weekend trips for us to explore new cities around us. Slowly, day after day, I began to heal and feel happiness creep back into my life.

I know that somewhere, somehow he’s reviewing this latest camera roll — the one capturing the best day of our lives — and feeling the warmth of the Tuscan sun and the beaming love of two united families.

From the Maid of Honor (who captured our love story so well and brought everyone to tears with her speech)… A bit of history — Lisa and I met in junior high. Not only was she my friend, but she protected me as a sister would, and many times at her own expense. I could share a million stories but I’ll share just this one-

Lisa and I took the train together to school every day. One morning, at the foot of the stairs, we heard the train pulling in. She flew up the stairs and I huffed and puffed my short legs after her. By the time I reached the top, she was already on the train. As the doors closed she stuck out her arms and leg to hold them open, completely ruining her outfit. But she pressed on, shoved the doors open and pulled me in. And as we were plastered against the doors, she somehow managed to pull an oil blotting tissue from her bag and started to blot my face. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.

Along the same vein, I attempted to show my love for her when I wore my superman T-shirt and superman ring to threaten to beat a girl up who was spreading lies about Lisa. True story–even the T-shirt part. Our friendship was basically cemented in stone from then on.

Though our lives led us to different colleges, jobs and cities, Lisa remained my close friend, never judging, always listening, always loving.

When Lisa called to tell me she was engaged, I felt what probably many sisters felt to hear that kind of news–joy, relief, and overwhelming excitement. But most of all, I felt pride — for reasons I will explain in a bit.

But first, some honesty — when Lisa first told me about Paul, I think my exact words were ‘I give him 3 months…’

Don’t get me wrong, it had nothing at all to do with Paul. What’s not to like about him? First of all, he’s from the UK, which means he has an English accent, which pretty much immediately puts you on any American girls’ scoreboard! She said he was tall, kind, funny, had a great job and big hands… And you know what they say about big hands… Big hands = big gloves. Big gloves for the best hugs! But still, I had my doubts and here’s why.

I believe that in order to fall in love, you must first learn to love yourself. Lisa grew up in NYC — arguably the best city to learn how to do just that. But over 20+ years, I witnessed Lisa time and time again, leave herself on the bottom of her love-list. I, myself, have been guilty of being on the constant receiving end of her love.

You see, Lisa taught me how to be loved, which in turn allowed me to open my heart to Josh, my husband—and now we have a beautiful son together. Naturally, I wanted the same for Lisa, so it broke my heart when she nonchalantly said at my wedding, ‘I’m never gonna find the one.’ Two months later, enter Paul.

Prior to meeting Paul, his name was just ‘the Brit’ — I couldn’t be bothered with dedicating his name to memory since I was sure he had a 3-month shelf life. But within hours of actually meeting Paul, watching them together, I noticed a distinct shift in Lisa. She was visibly relaxed, always laughing and truly happy. He woke up at dawn 2-mornings of our short 4-day Halong Bay cruise without a complaint because Lisa wanted to take photos of the sunrise. In the streets of Vietnam, she held his hand and scurried behind him as he walked swiftly through the crowds. I’d never seen that balance of power in Lisa’s previous relationships…Perhaps this Brit did have some staying power.

Sadly, Lisa’s father unexpectedly passed in the fall of 2014. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that Paul made the trip with Lisa to provide support. As I watched Lisa quietly weep for her loss, I wanted nothing more than to put that superman T-shirt back on and shield her from whatever was hurting her. I ran to give her a hug but when I got to her, Paul already had his arms around her and she was clinging to the back of his pants, the way a little girl would her father. Lisa had finally found her real superman.

Paul, thank you for loving Lisa as she is, and for opening her heart, something many have tried but all have failed until now. I never thought of it as the impossible, but knew it would take someone truly special to do. I hope you will always cherish her and know that though she’s strong, you have her heart–she is vulnerable.

Lisa, I could not be happier for you. I am so proud that you finally learned to love yourself enough to be unconditionally loved by this man. As I wrap up this unnecessarily long speech, I’ll leave you with this quote–“I no longer believed in the idea of soul mates, or love at first sight. But I believed that a very few times in your life, if you were lucky, you might meet someone who was exactly right for you. Not because he was perfect, or because you were, but because your combined flaws were arranged in a way that allowed two separate beings to hinge together forever.

From the Bride…As for how we chose our wedding destination, Matthew and I realized when we first started looking at venues, we thought we would want a resort so we flew to Puerto Rico and visited 6 different resorts. They were all very lovely but we did not connect with them and thought they were too unreasonable priced for what we would get. We envisioned having a place to call home where we could reside with our closest family and friends and celebrate our wedding week. We decided to randomly email “large houses” all over the world and we narrowed the results to 3 villas all located in 3 different countries: St. Martin in the Caribbean, Mykonos in the Greek Isles, and Lucca in Italy. I decided against St. Martin because I cannot hang out at the beach for more than a couple of days before getting bored. Matthew decided against Mykonos because it has a reputation for being a “party town.” So, we both decided on Borgo Benni in Lucca because who doesn’t love Italy? We wanted our wedding guests to make a vacation out of it and Italy would allow everyone to do just that. We rented the villa without ever visiting and seeing it beforehand. We just put our faith in love and hope for the best outcome.

From Honey & Cinnamon Italian Wedding Planner… Lost in the beauty of the Tuscan countryside, this bridal inspiration was particularly treasured because of the impressive venue we have found and of the magic you can breathe all around, with its stunning garden, the amazing villa, and the ancient charming atmosphere. That was exactly what we wanted to create and we specifically choose a palette with touches of burgundy and blush to enhance the styling with a vibrant beautiful color. The styling conceived by Federica, from Honey and Cinnamon, was simple but refined in very few details.

“I imagined a delicate and elegant bride, walking down the paths of the amazing Italian Garden, where perfect hedges create an amazing view for the visitor and the wisteria dominate all. We created elegance with a stunning bridal dress created by Anna Fucà Atelier, a very soft gown made or organza with a precious body made with delicate lace. The bride was beautifully prepared by the talented touch of Organic Brides with neutral shades to give this ethereal refined touch. She wore a unique hair piece designed by Orchidée de Soie, shoes by Bella Belle and above all the stunning jewels of Susie Saltzman to give a touch of pure elegance to this romantic set. She was embracing a gorgeous bouquet born from the talent of ISA’ Events, specifically designed loose and messy in the beautiful shades of dusty rose and burgundy of peonies, hellebore, ranunculus, roses and viburnum all together magically mixed. Sophie was able to capture the true essence of this work, giving everything a sense of ethereal elegance. Working with her was pure magic!”

Various the sets we re-created: a walk in the Italian garden, sitting down in the shade of the imposing sculpture where romantic ceremonies are often celebrated and where a beautiful cake created by Alessandra Frisoni was standing for its shots the marvelous view of the Tuscan hills, a romantic table set for two in the lawn in front of the pool where the elegance of the stationery suite conceived by The Little North Sea Studio, a pose in front of the villa and dreaming of her romantic and never-ending love.

Coral Charm Peonies Make This Italian Celebration All the More Pretty

If there’s one flower that consistently steals our affection it’s the peony. And this stunning Italian celebration? Well it’s filled with them. Bursting with vibrant coral charm florals and one fabulous celebration, Kir & Ira Photography has captured every bit to share and we’ve got it all waiting for you to fall in love with in The Vault!

From The Bride…I’ve been organizing events around the world for the past 15 years that’s why we decide to plan our wedding celebration ourselves. The expectations from our friends and family were high towards this one, which did not make planning any easier. We started looking on the Internet for ideas and places we liked. With guests coming from 21 countries, we wanted to rent a whole villa/house for a week, so all of our friends and family could stay near by to us. We also were looking for flexibility from the venue we were going to use, so we could decide our own suppliers, with not so many restrictions. Most important factors for us were great food and drink, good weather, nature and a peaceful unique place as we live in London, we wanted to get away from the crowd. We chose Italy, as it was easy to get to for us and our guests, offered great places to visit and it is a paradise for foodies.

We enjoyed doing site visits to Italy. We visited Tuscany twice to organize and see things, as we have organized our wedding ourselves. We chose the idea of travel and globe as a seating plan. We had an old map and we allocated guests per countries. We also really wanted to have two long banquet tables and it worked really well for our wedding. At our wedding we had many kids who were given kids packs full of games, stickers and toys to keep them entertained.

I liked the idea of braces and tie bows for page boys, and they were the stars of the day. We saw San Galgano Abbey and straight away decided that this is the place for us. On the evening of our first visit there, they had a opera concert, which we stayed and decided on that same evening that Opera during our ceremony would be a real wow factor as we enjoy it and our guests would have a different experience.

We had local honey as small presents to our guests. We found these little pots of honey in local shop and a supplier made special stickers for us (Tatyana and Lee, meant to bee) and we got lavender honey (bees been collecting piling from lavender flowers only). Peach and coral color scheme started from peonies, flowers which I have fallen for and which were used in wedding flowers as well.

Wedding took place end of April, and we decided it would be the best time as it was not to hot, not too busy with tourists and prices were lower compared to peak time. Only thing we had to consider was changing weather, therefore we have booked a big marquee and placed it just outside of the villa as we wanted most of the wedding to be outdoors, and we didn’t want to take a risk on the rain. We had booked two musicians, who stayed with us for from Friday until Monday playing piano, and guitars for us. On our wedding day we have put lots of effort to our entertainment program, which included traditional Russian games as well as some less traditional dance offs. We had also prepared a song list for our Italian DJ who successfully catered for each taste of music and got us all dancing to great hits like to Kalinka, Macarena and many Italian classics.

Best parts of the whole wedding planning experience was driving our classic car in the most beautiful areas of Tuscany, visiting places and trying food during our site visits and meeting with the Mayer of the town, two days before the wedding to sign pre marriage documents. We have met and made friends with great people including Jacopo, who is the owner of Villa di Corsano, so was there to give us great suggestions and local knowledge.

If you want to organize a wedding in Italy we would recommend to choose a place which is near places for sight seeing. We had Sienna only 15 minutes away, Florence 1 hour away plus many other great places. Make sure you use only recommended suppliers and it is not easy to book services in Italy, as people are very relaxed. We had very personal experience as our dear friend Carmen who is from Italy, was translating our ceremony into English. For Russian guests who did not speak English, we translated menus and order of service for them. We also had best mans and grooms speeches translated beforehand, to make it more personal on the wedding day.

As we had such a international wedding, we did our own website, where our guests could find travel info, tips and photos. It was the easiest way to communicate info and updates. In total we had just over 90 people and 60 of them stayed for the whole week. We made a holiday out of this and every evening we had BBQ and meals together, so we have an outstanding wedding party.

Why Tuscany Holds the Key to Wedding Day Perfection

If I could, I would crawl right through my screen just to experience the pretty captured by Allen Tsai Photography firsthand – it’s just that good. From those crazy chic florals, to the stunning scenery that is Tuscany, every darn detail is wedding day perfection and I’m just begging someone to recreate it all for their big day. See it all in The Vault and you’ll easily understand why I’m completely obsessed.

From Allen Tsai PhotographyMost wedding editorials focus on the bride and groom, but for this romantic Tuscan bridal inspiration we wanted to tell a story from the bride’s perspective during the quiet and intimate moments of her wedding day, pre-ceremony. Slipping into your bridal gown and writing a heartfelt note to your groom, a moment in front of the camera with freshly picked blooms from the Italian countryside, the linens on your reception table gently waving in the breeze as if anticipating the love and conversation to come over Tuscan wine…those are the relaxed pre-wedding moments we wanted to capture on film. There’s something extremely special and precious about those few pre-wedding hours before the guests arrive and the hustle and bustle begins, so we wanted to inspire brides to savor that time and capture some of that stillness in the beautiful surroundings they’ve created.

I can’t think of a more romantic destination wedding location than Tuscany, Italy, and the hilltop venue of Monteverdi Tuscany was a stunning backdrop of rolling green hills and tall Italian cypress trees, with rich surrounding textures of stone. From the stunning views to the fine wine and dining, every guest room has its own unique design, which makes for an unforgettable destination trip for your closest loved ones.

Letter Love Studio conveyed the tone for this intimate wedding experience with loose and organic calligraphy on handmade paper. The terra cotta colored ink mirrored the tiled rooftops synonymous with Italian architecture, and the imperfect ink splatters feel right at home in this simple yet rustic suite. Topped off with vintage stamps and a beautifully deckled edge cotton envelope from Italian paper maker Amalfi, this wedding suite lends elegance and character to this luxurious but understated shoot.

Wanting this editorial to be a true Tuscany experience, we included talented local vendors including floral design by Puscina Flowers, and hair & makeup by Andrea Hair Styling. For the tablescape, Tuscan fabrics from Biagianti, wrought iron sculptures from Biagiotti, and custom designed wood pepper mills by Brigitte Deval were all incorporated, lending an authentic Italian flair to our outdoor tabletop.

All of the wildflowers used were grown by Puscina Flowers on their own family farm. I’ve never felt so calm and close to nature as I did when I stepped foot onto their estate. 100% of their floral design is sourced from their own land, enabling them to have a rarely personal and profound understanding of the florals they use. The result is a unique, organic, and natural floral design that feels effortless.

To complete our old world influence, Watters “Florence” dress with its flowing silk mousseline skirt couldn’t have been more perfect for our bride. We paired it with a vintage inspired green emerald by Shapiro Diamonds, which was a custom design.

Chic + Intimate Elopement in Tuscany

Today we’re giving MAJOR props to this darling duo. For not only did they elope in THE most beautiful part of the world, but they also managed to plan the entire celebration via e-mail. I mean, that right there is proof that they had the utmost trust their vendors, and the payoff? AH-MAZING. It’s the perfect intimate ceremony complete with endless love and thanks to the ever-so-talented Jasmine Star we’ve got it all waiting in The Vault!

From the Bride… The most difficult part about planning an elopement in another county would be the communication, specifically the language barrier. Several of the important details from my perspective (hair, makeup, flowers, ceremony plans, etc.) were all discussed, negotiated, and confirmed/secured via email. That can of course be a little nerve-racking, especially when contracts and an exchange of monetary value is involved. However, as we’ve socially evolved as a culture over the past decade there are so many secure sites that make doing business internationally much more accommodating! Oh, and the time difference. Carl and I found ourselves up at 4am here in Florida calling the event coordinator at La Foce or our priest to discuss details, details, details.

The advice I would give to other brides wanting to plan an elopement internationally would be to start “planning” or at least securing your “must have” vendors (photographer, ceremony site, etc.) at least a year in advance. Engage with your “core vendors” for recommendations on other “must haves”. For example, when scouting a designer for a unique veil ask ask your photographer, “What’s the most beautiful veil you’ve ever photographed..and who designed it?”

Lean on your inner-circle of friends, colleagues, co-workers, family, etc. as a resource for different aspects of the inital planning. This could be as simple as posting on social media a question about “Anyone been to Italy? What was your favorite region? Any breathtaking venues I MUST know about when planning a special getaway?”

Build relationships with everyone you communicate (especially those who are located at your chosen destination). Yes, build relationships with folks you initially email simply inquiring about a venue, pricing on something, etc. How do you do this? Be diligent with your email follow through. Google their name and establishment to find something unique about them and mention it in your correspondence. Read reviews online and highlight something special someone said about their experience with said person and/or venue. If the person is extra helpful, write them a hand-written card thanking them. This “relationship building” in turns helps you find your “local liaison”…which brings be to my next point….

Find a local “liaison” of sorts to help you navigate the (even small) barriers of planning (language, time difference, etc.) This person isn’t necessary your “coordinator” (for instance Carl and I didn’t have a local coordinator/planner), but instead someone who you’ve emailed and/or spoken with on the phone enough times that you can perhaps Cc them in an email with someone they have referred you to to help explain something when you’re having difficultly understanding or “connecting a dot”. For instance, this person for us was the rental manager at the estate we stayed at and had our wedding ceremony. She was so helpful when we initially reached out to inquire about the property that I felt comfortable Ccing and including her on the email exchanges we had with our priest about ceremony details when we were each having a hard time articulating certain things. She was happy to chime in and help both ends fill in the blanks. We kept the theme of “relationship building” going with her by bringing her and her assistant a gift from Paris upon our arrival.

The real unexpected perk was getting to experience the special Sposi Novelli treatment at the Papal Audience where Pope Franicis welcomed people from all over the world to celebrate the anniversary of the Second Vatican Council and did a special blessing for those approved to sit up front (newlyweds!!!!). Newly married couples traveled from all over the world to experience this so for us having already scheduled a wedding and honeymoon in Italy and THEN finding out about this opportunity was definitely an UNEXPECTED perk. Needless to say we revolved our honeymoon schedule around getting a special blessing from The Pope. Apparently the tradition of “blessing newlyweds” has evolved over history (depending on who is Pope).

From Stefano SantucciHi, this is Regina and Ryan destination wedding in Tuscany.

They are both Americans who live a few miles away from New York. They decided to get married in Tuscany at a wonderful country chic wedding in Tuscany where everything was planned in detail.

Ryan is an important producer and Regina is a lovely girl with Italian origins. The ceremony took place in one of the most beautiful churches I’ve ever seen, “l’Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore”, immersed in the forests and fields of Tuscany, in Buonconvento. After the moving ceremony, the Bride and Groom celebrated with their relatives and friends at Casali di Bibbiano, with the best Italian food and wine.

It has been an incredible and full day full of emotions and very well planned, R+R wedding started their big day at the Abbazia di Monteuliveto and finished with stunning fireworks performed during the cutting cake.

Vintage-Inspired Tuscan Villa Wedding

When I was about 13-years-old, my family took a trip to Tuscany, and it was one of the best family vacations I’ve ever been on. This gorgeous day from FunkyBird Photography and FunkyBird is taking be right back to the rolling hills of Italy and filling me with warm memories. Fall in love with everything—from the couple’s sweet love and adorable children to the beautiful al fresco reception—in THE VAULT!

From FunkyBird PhotographyWhat a cute vintage wedding in Tuscany. It was a pleasure working on this wedding which took place on the Chianti hills of Tuscany near Florence. A beautiful September day and the perfect light for wedding photographs. As a wedding photographer in Tuscany I am always looking for that perfect moment ‘the golden hour’ and on this wedding it really shines trough. The way the bride and groom, their kids and all the guests were dressed gave a really nice touch to these wedding pictures. Beautiful flowers and decorations were provided by the one and only Sonja from FunkyBird Wedding Design to lift everything up on an even higher level and made this tuscany wedding even prettier. The whole day was perfectly organized by the wonderful Roos from Trouwen in Toscane.
