Puerto Rico Wedding from 13:13 Photography

I’ve decided that I need a vacation.  I mean, don’t get me wrong… I love this crazy gorgeous fall weather we’ve been having, and all of the hot cocoa sipping that goes right along with it.  But doesn’t a trip to the lovely land also known as Puerto Rico sound just soooo awesome?  Especially if that trip was anything like this drop.dead.gorgeous wedding captured by 13:13 Photography, a literal non-stop day of pretty with one totally fun party. See it all right here in the full gallery.

From the Bride… This hot blooded Colombian-American girl met her Norwegian viking skier, John, in Denver, CO in 2008. He turned my world upside down, and he proposed in the arctic frost of Norway in 2010.

The biggest challenge for John and I was deciding on the destination to celebrate our special day with friends and family from across the globe. As we were wedding planning from Norway, we decided to choose a neutral territory where we could combine traditions from our American, Colombian, and Norwegian upbringings. We chose the island of enchantment, Puerto Rico, and more specifically Hotel El Convento, a timeless and traditional restored luxury hotel nestled in the heart of the charming and mysterious Old San Juan.

While planning our wedding we kept our priorities relatively simple. We knew we wanted great music, an all-night dance party, and readings from my brother, and John’s sister during the ceremony. Our ceremony was held in a large courtyard at Centro de Estudios Avanzados next to the Hotel El Convento. The courtyard has beautiful arches, blossoming trees, and the refreshing aura of the Puerto Rican sun and breeze.

Following the ceremony we played in the cobblestone streets in Old San Juan while our wonderful photographers from 13:13 Photography captured our first moments as husband and wife. A cocktail hour, consisting of abundant and fruity sangria and a Puerto Rican cigar roller, was held al fresco for our guests in the elegant Patio Del Nispero of The Hotel El Convento, in the shadow of the hotel’s famous century-old, nispero fruit tree. Following cocktail hour, the guests were invited into the ballroom for dinner, speeches, and dancing. Our fabulous live band played the perfect mix of latino dance music combined with catchy tunes from Europe and the U.S.A. Everyone was on their feet, moving to the music, with the last bite of their dinner.

Around 11 pm, we surprised our guests with the arrival of drummers playing ‘batucada’ (a substyle of samba and refers to an African influenced Brazilian percussion style). This began the Colombian tradition of ‘hora loca.’ All the guests were provided props such as masks, silly hats, sunglasses, and whistles, to join the live drummers on the dance floor. The Puerto Rican rum was flowing, the dancing feet of our loved ones were rhythm to our ears, and we cannot imagine a night better spent surrounded by our favorite people from 12 different countries.

When the venue closed down, we crossed the centuries old cobblestone streets to a local dive bar, and continued to the wee hours of the morning accompanied by our closest friends and our new friends from 1313 Photography, for some local beer and laughs.

Travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico with Kimberly Chau

Our Livings editor, Jacquelyn, is a travel junkie. Me, not so much. I think when you have two smelly kids, the idea of being too far from home suddenly becomes a bit more, well, daunting. But honestly? Seeing these gorgeous images from the lovely Kimberly Chau from her trip to Puerto Rico sort of makes me want to throw caution to the wind and pack up the whole family. Almost. This trip is beauty defined and there is so much more right here in the gallery.

From KimberlyMy husband and I were married last year in July and we planned our honeymoon a few months later in October. We wanted to travel within the U.S. territories and found a city with a lot of culture, history, shopping, and great food. In the end, the decision and wait for San Juan, Puerto Rico was so worth it!

Our accommodations were at El Convento, a charming old world hotel in the heart of Old San Juan. The stay was a stone’s throw from food and shopping and provided gorgeous views of the city. We walked the historic streets of Old San Juan and they were filled with quaint and lively little shops, boutiques, and old buildings. Many of the owners run small businesses here and were very friendly and welcoming to tourists. Likewise, almost everyone spoke English.

The Puerto Rican food on the island was phenomenal, of course. My hubby and I still crave for the chuleta can can (Puerto Rican-style pork chops) and mofongo (mashed plantains) that were traditional dishes in the area. Both dishes are popular on the island and can be found at a reasonable price (and they accept U.S. Dollars).

During our trip, we also toured the Castillo San Felipe del Morro (or El Morro), a famous fort used the defend San Juan from enemies in the sea. The views towards the ocean and over the island were simply beautiful and amazing. Most people can walk to these sites, but there is the option of public transport as well.

I highly encourage travelers to pack light and to find a good pair of comfortable walking shoes when visiting Puerto Rico. Most of our travels were by ground and we knew we would come back heavier with all the available shopping. I chose to photograph my trip entirely in film and I’m so glad I chose this medium to journal our trip. I love how the film preserved the atmosphere, colors, and views of San Juan to its best integrity. I would love to go back and explore more of the island one day!

San Juan Destination Wedding from Envi Photo

Fairytale romances?  They start out with a bang.  A chance meeting in a Las Vegas bar kind of bang that you kind of think only happens in the movies, but when it comes to this darling NYC duo, it’s a seriously awesome reality.  One that was followed up by a long-distance romance, a cross-country move and a San Juan wedding that will, put simply, blow you away.  It’s a day that was made for the big screen, complete with the planning expertise of Momentus and one image after another of pure pretty from Envi Photo. See them all in the full gallery.

From the Bride… I (a native Texan) was living in Los Angeles, working for a boutique hotel in Beverly Hills… and Devin (a life-long East Coaster) was living in New York, working as Director of Business Development for a cross-channel digital marketing company – when our worlds collided in a Las Vegas hotel bar on January 28, 2008.

After a few short months of cross-country dating and endless hours of long-distance phone calls (thank goodness for unlimited plans!), we decided to see what would happen if we lived in the same city – in fact, in the same apartment! By July of 2008, I (and all of my earthly belongings) had landed in Brooklyn, and we never looked back!

In 2010, while on vacation in Puerto Rico to celebrate my 40th birthday, Devin charmed me into a midnight walk on the beach. He had managed to keep the proposal and the ring a complete surprise – I had no idea what was happening! The next thing I know, he is on one knee. After a few squeals and joyously running around in a circle (my trademark), I accepted.

We immediately chose San Juan for the wedding, not only to commemorate the location of our engagement, but also to honor Devin’s family from the island. Devin (definitely the romantic of the two of us) selected January 28, 2012 for our wedding. On that date, guests from New York, California, Spain, Florida, Sweden and Texas converged on Puerto Rico for a sunset wedding, written entirely by us.

Four years to the day after walking into a bar in Vegas (in my “I love boys” t-shirt), I walked down the aisle and married the love of my life (this time I was in Vera Wang).

A destination wedding is certainly no easy feat – especially for a detail fiend like myself! I approached the planning and the event itself the way I would have if it were going to be in New York. I am very hands on, and we both really wanted something classic, yet modern – and most importantly “us” – which meant some fun and quirkiness added in.

I can’t seem to leave anything alone – even our Save the Dates, I hand-cut a layer of vellum and tied each one with a platinum ribbon. As inviting guests for a Destination Wedding is a substantial undertaking, we wanted to ensure that our guests had as much time as possible to plan – and we also hoped they would make an extended trip of it, and truly enjoy the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. Although we selected a classic design, we included the note: “partypants required” which our friends and family loved.

The invitations were a critical component of the wedding for us. I found out through this process that my husband is as big a paper snob as I am! We both wanted letterpress, however, quickly decided it was well out of our price range. After weeks of searching, I simply could not get this ONE letterpress design out of my mind. We bit the bullet – and it was truly one of the best decisions we made. The invitations were exquisite… the design a perfect match of classic and modern. Of course, I couldn’t leave them alone – as gorgeous as they were. I wanted them to be absolutely one of a kind and set the tone for the entire weekend. I mounted each invitation on charcoal gray cardstock, and cut wide bands of the most stunning handmade paper that I had found in an art shop here in the city. And for my NEXT trick – I lined each and every last envelope by hand on our kitchen table – not only the invitation envelope, but also the RSVP envelope. I handmade the menus – using the same cardstock backing, and bands of the same paper that went around the invitations… details that were not lost on our guests – we had so many compliments!

Devin’s sister Cristina, also the Maid of Honor, was instrumental in organizing a number of group activities leading up to the wedding. More than anything, we really wanted to give everyone a sense of the island and to have multiple opportunities to meet and bond with each other before the wedding. We had a welcome happy hour at La Taberna Lupulo in Old San Juan, a guided rum tour at the Bacardi Distillery, and a sunset catamaran tour among others.

The day of the wedding was just happy. Everything had come together, and it truly just felt RIGHT. There were a couple of minor issues, but by the big day absolutely nothing could bother me. I think I may have floated down the aisle. Devin and I had spent hours and hours crafting our wedding ceremony. We wrote the ENTIRE ceremony, beginning to end. Our officiant said that in his almost 30 years of performing weddings, no one had EVER handed him an entire wedding ceremony. Especially as it was destination, and with a complete stranger performing the most important ceremony in our lives – I couldn’t imagine doing it any other way. We were able to take all the very best parts of who we are and who we want to be – and write a ceremony and vows that celebrated all of that, while including all of the amazing friends and family that have supported us and helped us become the people we are. It was so powerful for the both of us.

I also made the programs – MORE handmade papers and platinum ribbon – which included the story of us, as well as passages from the wedding, and favorite pictures and quotes. Although a lot of work, I truly enjoyed making each one of them knowing that a very special loved one would have this memento of our day to take with them. We had guests ask for extras!

The reception, the dinner and dancing – was all better than we could have hoped. For our table numbers, we decided to pay homage to hotels that had played a part in our story together. The Avalon Beverly Hills (where I worked when we met), The Rio Las Vegas (where we met), The London NYC (where I worked upon landing in NYC), The El San Juan (where we became engaged, and rounding out the group The Ritz-Carlton (the site of our wedding). It was such a magical night, and sharing it with friends and family from quite literally all over the world was simply overwhelming and humbling. To have these incredible people, from different parts of our lives all in one room sharing our joy and wishing us well – it was heaven! We sent our loved ones off to bed with a gift bag which included: an ultrasuede eye mask, bottle of water, advil, tylenol pm and emergen-c. We received MANY “thank you’s” the next day as everyone was recovering!

Our last hurrah, was our shoot in Old San Juan. I simply HAD to have pictures amongst the history, architecture, and colors of this amazing city. Enuel Viera of Envi Photo met us two days after the wedding, and we ventured all through the cobblestone streets shooting amazing pictures to complement our wedding day images. Of COURSE, as we met in a bar – we ended our shoot at a bar there in Old San Juan – and toasted our new chapter.

Vieques Island, Puerto Rico Wedding from Lexia Frank Photography

I often ask myself what my wedding would be like if I had a total do-over. And while I haven’t quite worked through all the details, I know it’d look a lot like this. Somewhere totally secluded and completely romantic. With only our nearest and dearest to bear witness. Throw in the ultra modern W Retreat & Spa plus the natural beauty of Vieques Island, Puerto Rico, and you’ve got my own little slice of wedding heaven. Believe me when I say this beauty from Lexia Frank is one perfect wedding you don’t want to miss.

From Lexia Frank PhotographyDana and Timo- two transplant Germans living in New York- planned their beautiful destination wedding on the tiny island of Vieques, off the coast of Puerto Rico.  The only resort on the island- The W Hotel- was a perfect location because it blended the soft pastel colors of the island with bright modern pops of color. The interior of the ultra modern hotel was designed by Patricia Urquiola, and was the perfect backdrop for the wedding. Dana and Timo wed on the cliff overlooking the turquoise waters, and had their intimate reception down on the private beach itself, with everyone barefoot and dipping their toes in the water while they ate.  After dinner they celebrated with a live guitarist, a bonefire (with soft blankets and pillows to cuddle with), sparklers and a flying paper lanterns to end the night!

Destination weddings are pure genius to me. I mean, what beats a trip with your nearest and dearest to celebrate your love? I honestly can’t think of much, expect maybe having Kimberly Chau Photography on hand to capture every sweet moment of the weekend unfold. Puerto Rico Wedding from Dziekonski Photography

I am totally obsessed with our Travel features on SMP Living. My travel bucket list grows every week, and today it’s growing even more. We’ve got a wedding in Puerto Rico that is seriously a piece of art. Dziekonski Photography captured the Old San Juan wedding in a way that has left me speechless and packing my bags. Before you grab your monogrammed luggage tags, make sure to visit the gallery to fully fall in love!

From the couple … Puerto Rico! Armina and Erick live in Hollywood, Florida but lived in Puerto Rico most of their life, so it was only right to plan a destination wedding in the beautiful city of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.

After ten years of having met each other and then getting lost in the distance, Armina & Erick reconnected only to realize that there was something that, unassumingly, they shared. In order to determine what was really happening, Erick who was living in Fort Lauderdale decided to board a plane en route to Puerto Rico. He was determined to find out if what he was feeling was as real to her as it was to him.

When Armina picked up Erick at the airport, she asked him: “So, what are your plans for this trip?” He replied: “Not really sure. I came to see you, so I’ll go wherever you take me or tell me to.” After the initial shock, they went to “Pal Cielo” where Erick asked her on their first date. We have the memory saved on a napkin…

Before embarking on their first trip to Argentina, they decided to go out for a romantic dinner. Erick had planned a night to remember. They went to a five star restaurant overlooking the ocean where they dined and enjoyed some fine wines for relaxation. After dinner they went for a walk on the beach: there was a full moon and the starry night was perfect. All of the sudden Erick stopped and while looking into her eyes said: “…this night would only be perfect if you would give me your hand in marriage”. Armina replied: “Yes!” The rest is history!

They where married at the historic 500 year old Cathedral of San Juan Bautista. The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista is located in the center of the city, just a few blocks from the Castle San Felipe del Morro. We didn’t find it necessary to do much decoration to the church; this would take away from the beauty of the Cathedral. After the ceremony the reception was held in the Hotel El Convento, a landmark monument of the Conquistador Age, it was originated as a Carmelite Convent 356 years ago. Our wedding colors where a light lime green, white and a light cream. Our flower was Orchids. The decoration was subtle and elegant. Since most of their dating time was spent on weekend trips between Fort Lauderdale & Puerto Rico, it only seemed natural that the wedding theme was Travel. Erick, being a Graphic Designer, created all of the artwork for the wedding including: the photo signs instead of table numbers, airport boarding signage for table setting, the guest book was a passport, favors, invitations, menu, etc. To top it off, Armina’s brother is a home brewer, so he brewed a special Beer, which we labeled as Full Moon Flight for our occasion, which we gave out as favors. it was the perfect gift.

Every moment of our wedding was memorable, I don’t think we could pick just one. Thanks to Marek’s Vision & Photography these moments are now captured forever and ever.

Puerto Rico Engagement Session from Alan Phillip Photography

Oh, Puerto Rico.  You are an amazing place.  Crystal blue waters, stunning architecture, vibrant hues every.which.way you turn… paradise never looked so good.  And when you add in a gorgeous couple ready to say I Do, well.  It makes for an even sunnier destination.  Especially when that gorgeous couple happens to be an uber-stylish duo such as these two and their day was captured by Alan Phillip Photography.  This is what we call a match made in engagement session heaven and you can see it all right here.

From Alan Phillip PhotographyThis bride, who is a photographer, definitely didn’t want the cookie cutter engagement session. It’s always an honor when a couple chooses me to photograph their engagement, but it’s even more of an honor when a photographer who recently got engaged trusts you with their engagement photographs. We flew out to beautiful Puerto Rico from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where the couple is originally from. Her fiance, Alex, is originally from Puerto Rico, so Polyana wanted to do her engagement session somewhere that meant a lot to the both of them. It was just a perfect location. I started their session in El Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico, which is rich in history and culture. I loved every minute of their session, and I would do it all over it again.

Surrounded by its beautiful waters and stunning architecture, they made their love official through their first set of wedding photos as a couple. Their session took place at the San Cristobal Fort and then through the streets of Old San Juan.

Puerto Rico Wedding by Ambrosio Photography + Elegant Occasions

I’m totally head over heels for this tropical and romantic fete. I love the simplicity of the monochromatic florals and their incredible impact on the tables surrounded by the white chairs and gorgeously draped white fabric overhead. The romance and drama continued into the night with candle lit dining and a gorgeous sunset. And when the bride and groom had their first dance, all the guests were surprised by a pretty, pretty firework display. We’re talking pure romance from beginning to end thanks to Elegant Occasions. Ambrosio Photography captured all the details and I highly recommend checking out the full gallery for this one!

From Ambrosio PhotographyLeAnn and Bernard chose Vieques because of the ease of access and being a U.S. territory. The W does a wonderful job at transporting you to some place new, a place that is relaxing. Elegant Occasions helped design and produce elevated flowers on boxes that glow. This helped create a romantic feeling for the two long tables. LeAnn was all about the details.

The day before the wedding, everyone went on a Biobay tour. For the day of the wedding, the beautiful town’s church hosted the ceremony. LeAnn hired the local high school marching band to lead the bridal party and guests out of the church. She did this because in high school she was in marching band! Cocktail hour consisted of over-looking the beautiful sun setting. Another surprise for the guests was as the couple started their first dance, there was a fireworks display.

San Juan Wedding by Sweet Caroline Photo

This 3-day extravaganza that we are about to embark on is a complete dream from start to finish. We are talking about a jaw-dropping sangeet ceremony and a gorgeous wedding that followed and all of it wrapped up in a melody of beautiful colors and Old World elegance in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Sweet Caroline Photo snapped all of the beautiful imagery and INvita Wedding and Event Designers designed each stunning event throughout this wedding weekend. Even the florals by Arquetipo are leaving us breathless. This is indeed a wedding for your favorites folder. See the whole gorgeous spread here!

Click here to see the entire gallery of images!

From Sweet Caroline PhotoThis was a 3-day event, the first day consists of a beautiful sangeet, the 2nd day was the wedding ceremony, the 3rd was a day after session held in San Juan, Puerto Rico. At the sangeet they had professional Bollywood dancers come in as well as a Plena band (playing traditional Puerto Rican music).

From the Bride…My favorite photograph is from the sangeet night when William, my husband and I performed to a Bollywood song on stage. The performance was a surprise to our wedding guests. The photo is full of so much life (and color) and I loved to see our friends and family around the stage supporting and cheering us on. We took 3 classes and practiced almost everyday for a month leading up to the wedding. We were so excited to surprise our family and friends!

I was lucky to have two nights to celebrate our wedding. I wanted these two events to look different from each other and represent some of the cultures we were celebrating. The sangeet night was modern, colorful, and lavish. The decor was moroccan themed. The reception venue, the next night, was held at an old convent house turned hotel. It’s located in the heart of Old San Juan which has an old vintage feel. I was inspired by these locations and used them to create a different look for the wedding ceremony and reception night. I wanted something romantic and simple. Color was understated and we used a lot of candle-light to set the mood.

My brother/officiant/groomsman created and sang a song just for me. He performed, guitar in hand at the sangeet. It was a beautiful and rare moment. What a great brother! Also, in the few days leading up to the wedding, I woke up to find a hand-written letter from my husband under my hotel room door that went into detail about the vows he would make to me at the wedding. At the ceremony, I knew exactly what he meant when he recited his vows. They were perfect and full of hope for our future. The tears wouldn’t stop rolling.

My biggest piece of advice for brides and grooms planning their wedding today would be start planning early. I can’t stress this enough. Your wedding day was meant to be stress-free and it’s important to get all the details out of the way early. If your budget allows, hire a wedding planner or a day-of coordinator. These planners know their stuff and give good advice. You know the old adage, “anything that can go wrong, will go wrong”? Well, your wedding is no exception to the rule. Despite the best efforts of many detail-oriented brides (trust me, I’m one of them), something may go wrong. So, go with the flow and don’t let the “small stuff” stain your memories. Additionally, if something does go wrong, don’t let guests in on your frustrations; your family and friends will feed off your vibe- so just enjoy it! In a few weeks, you won’t even remember you’re guests were rained on. True story.

San Juan Wedding by REB6studios

This wedding film has got it all. It’s sweet and sentimental but it’s also fun and exciting to watch. The music is perfect and the couple is absolutely adorable. I’d be lying if I told you I only watched it once! REB6studios flew all the way to Puerto Rico from San Francisco to capture their special day and aren’t we so glad they did because the outcome is fabulous! And don’t worry, I won’t tell if you watch it over and over again!

From REB6studiosComing from the Bay area, Mariane and I had to fly thousands of miles to get the opportunity to be the wedding videographer of Michelle and Armand’s destination wedding in San Juan Puerto Rico. The 12hrs of travel was definitely worth it. The place is just wonderful, the weather was also perfect. It reminded me of the Philippines.

I was eager to shoot because the place was just stunning. There were no bad locations for a shoot. I could walk around the resort for one day and I would have shot almost everything. Michelle and Armand and family will remember everything, especially the details and landscapes I shot. I actually had to go to old San Juan the next day because Armand’s parents suggested that it was a very nice place, which it was!

The couple expects nothing but the very best from us or else, it wouldn’t make sense to fly us there. And so, just like we always do, we shot like there was not tomorrow, got out there and had fun to prove to the couple that their investment with us is worth it.

Vieques Island Wedding by One Love Photo

One Love Photo has been wowing us time and time again with their exquisitely unique and artful photography but this Puerto Rico wedding has definitely sealed the deal for me.  I am in full blown crush mode right now.  Each and every image is like stepping into a dream.  An elegantly chic and romantic dream from which I never, ever want to wake.  Of course, the photographers did get a little help from the details like the insanely gorgeous Romona Keveza gown, the beautiful stationery made by the bride and the decor that is just the perfect amount of beachy and a whole lot of glam!  Lounge seaside in the full gallery to soak it all in!

From the Bride…We would like to first thank you, Style Me Pretty, for allowing us to find our super talented photographers, One Love Photo! I will never forget the moment…wedding blog browsing on a rainy Friday night and seeing a post of their work on your site. I knew that weeks and weeks of interviewing and meeting photographers were finally over. I was beyond thrilled with their talent and knew I would do anything to have them capture our wedding. Thankfully it worked out and we could not have been any happier with Heather and Jon from One Love. So thank you again!

Our story began more than 10 years ago in high school…2 proms, 6 months abroad in Australia, many vacations and a whole lot of laughs later, we are married! We always knew we would have a wedding on the beach, you can call us beach bums (everything is a whole lot better near the water after all, isn’t it?) After Josh proposed, our first order of business was finding the perfect location. When we found the W Retreat & Spa in Vieques, we knew we found our destination – a tiny island off the coast of Puerto Rico where horses run wild! (Guests would need to fly a 20 minute charter flight from San Juan to Vieques.) The design of the resort (modern yet rustic), the terrain of the island, it was all just very ‘us’. We are always searching for that little gem whether it is a travel destination or a restaurant. And Vieques was our new-found gem. And to top it, Alain Ducasse was the chef! And so the planning began!

As a designer myself, I had a pretty good vision for our day and was lucky to have the ability of designing most of the elements of the wedding day and every detail that came along with it. I guess you can say 5 years of tear outs was a big help! I have been dreaming of planning my wedding ever since I was a little girl therefore my creative mind really took over for the 7 months before our wedding! We were lucky to have the talented W team and Arquetipo, the florist in San Juan, to carry out our vision. I would call our aesthetic modern and elegant yet classic. Natural linen was used in many elements along with gold accents on an ivory background, combining a beachy feel with a modern touch. The island and more-so the resort has a vibrant vibe with splashes of bright colors incorporated in the design so I chose to keep the decor simplistic and minimal. I didn’t want to disrupt the natural beauty of Vieques.

I designed a monogram that featured 2 seahorses along with our initials, used in many items as an accent. Our seating cards were die cut seahorses that hung on each guest’s water goblet. I also designed our linen welcome totes that were manufactured in China, using a work vendor. Engraved and guilded-edged invitations were sent out in linen envelopes, designed by yours truly, along with the menu, programs, welcome notes, table settings, save the dates and tags for wicker fans provided at the ceremony. Custom made luggage tags were given at the brunch that were personalized with each guest’s contact information. As for my left-side brained husband…he handled all the logistics as there is an enormous amount of coordinating involved in a destination wedding. Thank god for his love of excel sheets! As much as a destination wedding is a whole lot of work, in the end it is worth every single second of the process in getting there!

All in all, it really was our dream come true.

San Juan Wedding by Kristen Marie Photography

Oh be still my glamour loving heart. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a more gorgeous backdrop for a wedding. But all palm trees and cobblestone laden streets aside, the details of this affair are what really shine through in each and every breathtaking image by Kristen Marie Photography. That and the insanely beautiful bride and groom. I’m just going to go ahead and vote them best dressed of 2011 as well as most likely to have the cutest offspring. The tuxedos, the baby’s breath, the old romantic architecture, the stunning dress…we’re dying over every second of it and you, my friends, can see it all here!

From Kristen Marie PhotographyCamillie and Blake were married in Camillie’s hometown of San Juan, Puerto Rico at El Convento Hotel in the heart of old San Juan. Bridesmaids wore peach floor length dresses and the groom and groomsmen wore black tuxes. Blake and Camillie wanted a sophisticated, romantic day to be shared with friends both in town and out of, and opted to have the ceremony held in the courtyard of the hotel and reception in the grand hall. Many small details with roses, peonies, hydrangeas, silver candle holders and baby’s breath adorned the tables and guests enjoyed salmon, chicken and great drinks. A band came in shortly after 10pm to surprise Blake and guests were given maracas to join in.

Puerto Rico Wedding by Amy Nichols Special Events

If you want to feel a bit fancy this Tuesday morning (and really, who doesn’t want to feel a little fancy on a Tuesday?), this elegant wedding by Amy Nichols Special Events will do just the trick. Complete with an Oscar de la Renta gown, stunning Puerto Rico views and drool-worthy Jimmy Choos – this wedding is making even my yoga-pant wearing self feel pretty glam on this otherwise standard weekday. We have Studio 1208 to thank for dressing up our morning with gorgeous images of the affair, and there is even more of this fancy fête in the full gallery of images!

And let’s continue the party for a bit with the gorgeous video from Studio 1208 – who also composed the original track you hear just for the couple. How special is that?

Bryan & Kim from Studio 1208 on Vimeo.

From the Bride…The Horned Dorset will always be a very special place for us.  Our first trip together was to this hotel. We planned the trip at the 11th hour with little expectations for the resort or Rincon.  When we pulled into the hotel, it was a pleasant surprise- 37 intimate villas on the beach.  Once we reached the villa, we almost jumped out of our skin!  Every room was Moroccan decor and they weren’t only romantic, they were two stories!  We were so impressed with our room, and the property, we decided we needed to come back.

On our fourth trip, Bryan popped the question with a cushion cut diamond on a rose gold setting.  It was the perfect place for me to say YES to a lifetime with him!  Almost immediately, the planning began.  The next day, we had breakfast with the GM, who led a tour of the property to see all the magical nooks and crannies (including the presidential suite).  The key selling point: the entire resort to ourselves and all 85 guests!   With Bryan from the West Coast, and Kimberly from the East Coast, a destination wedding was the perfect happy medium.  Our 4 and half month planning process began had already begun!

With a short timeline to bring our vision to life, I knew hiring a planner was key.  With some research, plus recommendations, I choose Amy Nichols Special Events. The reception room at the Horned Dorset is traditional, formal black and white decor with romantic red chandeliers.  To keep the color theme consistent we had white flowers, adding other touches. Amy used red and pink flowers to add pop along with mercury and silver vases.  I loved having more than two colors- it kept every room fresh and festive.  I walked into the reception and was filled with the smell of flowers- they were over the top and gorgeous (thanks to Arquetipo Flowers!).   One splurge, we flew in table runners / linens for the wedding from La Tavola Linens.  They pulled the black and white floors and table centerpieces together.  Never skimp on linens!

Since the ceremony overlooked the water, I wanted a dress that was sophisticated and beach appropriate, but nothing casual.  Slipping into my dream Oscar de la Renta dress, I couldn’t wait to walk down the aisle!  I felt like a princess, fortunate for me since our wedding was the same weekend as the royals!  The ceremony stage was set.  It was simple and tasteful with oversized lanterns surrounded by pink and orange flower petals.

Puerto Rico Wedding by Aaron Delesie + Elysium Productions

I was looking back through our real wedding archives yesterday and stumbled across THIS insanely beautiful wedding. It was given to us by my friend and crazy talented photographer, Aaron Delesie way back in the day when SMP was still finding its sea legs. Since that wedding, we’ve featured Aaron’s work time and time and time again…each perfect wedding more beautiful than the next. Well, I’m going out on a limb here and going to say this one, might be his best to date. The wedding itself is gorgeous (and don’t even get me started on the bride)…but the photography. Oh the photography. The images will literally take your breath away. And then, if it seemed like it couldn’t get any better, I got to open the film clip that Julie over at one of my fav cinema studios EVER, Elysium, sent my way. And I was proven completely wrong. The beauty is palpable…from the photographs to the film. Click here to see even more.

I know, I know. I’m considering printing some of these babies out and framing them for my home. They are art. To put it simply. Well, my friends. Wait until you see this next little piece of wedding heaven. Handcrafted by the fabulous team at Elysium, this vignette is beauty…come to life.

From the Bride…When Charlie and I began the wedding planning process, we knew exactly what type of event we wanted: An elegant yet intimate ceremony possibly under the stars surrounded by our closest family and friends. We wanted it to feel timeless, personal and romantic. A celebration of love and life between loved ones.  I also knew I wanted to incorporate my Colombian heritage and customs into our wedding celebration. Loving all things creative, I was ecstatic at the opportunity to design and create a beautiful and memorable experience and so the search for the perfect venue began in our home city of New Orleans. However, after numerous site visits, nothing seemed to fulfill our vision! We started toying with the idea of doing an intimate destination wedding …after all, it would allow us to share in a weekend-long celebration with our guests! Immediately, a light bulb clicked and a trip to Puerto Rico from two years prior came to mind. When we visited the island, we fell in love with the architecture and its old world charm. Puerto Rico or “La Isla del Encanto” (The Island of Enchantment) as locals rightfully call it, was the perfect representation of our two cultures- a blend of both English and Spanish influences plus it offered the old world elegance and allure we desired. After proposing the idea to our families, it was an easy decision and the Puerto Rican adventure began!

As we were glancing through our Puerto Rico vacation pictures for inspiration, we stumbled upon some shots from Castillo de San Cristóbal, a magnificent 200+ year old fortress and remembered its natural beauty. We knew the site would be perfect for a romantic, candlelight ceremony under the stars! Next we booked our reception site at the Salon Campeche in the breathtaking Hotel El Convento, a landmark monument located in Old San Juan. Once a convent, the hotel embodied the essence of Spanish Colonial architecture and design adorned with rich wooden beams, handcrafted tiles, carved chairs, velvet settees, antique chests and old ship bells.

We knew not all of our friends and family would be able to attend due to the distance so photography and cinematography were at the top of our list. I used SMP as my resource as I knew its featured vendors were the best of the best in the industry! It didn’t take long for me to fall head over heels in love with the work of Elysium Productions so I immediately contacted them and as luck would have it, they were available for our date! I struck double gold because I found my photographer, Aaron Delesie through them as well. I couldn’t have been happier…I was going to get married to my prince charming in a castle in front of our dearest friends and family and it would all be captured by the two most creative wedding vendors! Our fairytale was slowly coming to life!

San Juan Wedding by Dia Rao Photography

I have been swept off my feet by the pastel goodness found on the streets of Old San Juan and I love that the sweet, soft hues are mimicked in the pretty bride’s bouquet and adorable candy favors.  It’s taking all my control not to lick the computer screen because Dia Rao Photography‘s images are like fluffy clouds of cotton candy yumminess.  The dramatic and elegant reception just tops off this already delectable treat of a wedding!  Click here to see even more!

From Dia Rao Photography… Terra & Kevin were married at the Old San Juan Cathedral, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Terra’s family is from Puerto Rico, many of whom hadn’t been back for many years. And with many of Kevin’s family coming from Ireland, the couple settled on a destination wedding in the middle.

Terra & Kevin spent the week in a lofty Old San Juan rented flat which doubled as the bride’s getting ready space. They roamed the streets of San Juan with their family and friends, enjoying the local flavors, tastes and smells. The reception took place at the El Convento Hotel, a former convent, turned quaint boutique luxury hotel.

The small group of guests were greeted at the reception by an assortment of family photos by escorted to their tables with XOXO lollipops.

Puerto Rico Wedding by STAK Photographer Duo

I imagine that choosing the location must be one of the hardest parts of having a destination wedding.  For this vivacious couple, it certainly helped that many of their family members, and their childhood memories, were in Puerto Rico.  Getting their dream destination out of the way allowed them to just focus on how much fun they were going to have.  And did they ever!  It is quite obvious from these incredible images by STAK Photographer Duo that these two know how and love to party.  I adore a couple that doesn’t take themselves to seriously and can get down and have a good time.  There is even more from this beach bash in the full gallery!

From the Bride… As soon as Juan and I were engaged I knew we had to get married on the beach. Our first date had been a beach picnic with friends, our first kiss had been on the beach, we’re both from Puerto Rico and Juan had grown up going to the beach every weekend with his friends.  I sensed a theme…

It’s funny to say we had a “destination wedding” when we are from the destination and 90% of your guests actually live there. I have to say it was a huge help to have friends and family already in Puerto Rico, they helped us scout out venues, sample menus and prepare favors. In the end it was mostly a destination wedding for us, our out-of-town family and friends which included our photographers which we had met at a friend’s wedding in NJ.

We decided on Dorado Beach Resort’s West Beach Bohio for our wedding venue because it incorporated all the things we hoped for; a beautiful secluded beach and an open dining area that was just the right combination of casual, romantic and elegant. The Bohio is a large driftwood color structure with exposed posts and beams, it is covered with a corrugated zinc roof reminiscent of rustic country houses in Puerto Rico and has palm trees that come through the floorboards.  Perfect!

The color scheme was taken directly from the wedding site using sand, light gray and shell colors to continue the beach theme and adding white as a crisp accent to set it all off. My bouquet was a large bunch of light blush colored peonies tied with an ivory ribbon, the tables had white hydrangeas, the groom and bridesmaids had white minicalla lilies and the dads and groomsmen had white mini orchid boutonnieres. My dress was a multi layered ivory silk organza gown with raw cut edges, I felt it was unstructured and beachy in a very elegant way and I love the way the delicate layers echo the patterns waves leave on the sand. The bridesmaids wore strapless silk dresses in a soft pearly gray color and blush colored fabric flowers in their hair; the flower girls and ring bearer wore sleeveless silk crepe dresses in a soft ivory/blush color, I made ribbon sashes in light gray to match the bridesmaid’s dresses. The groom wore a sand colored suit, a crisp white shirt and (for a short while) a chocolate, blue and white striped tie.

The groomsmen were super relaxed in khaki pants and white cotton shirts. We wanted everyone to feel comfortable and casual so we had large white wicker baskets filled with flip flops for everyone to change into, silver for the ladies and brown for the men, I think this definitely help set the mood.

We wanted to keep the decoration clean and simple to let the scenery take precedence. We used tall clear glass vases, floating candles, votives and mirrored bases in simple geometric configurations and added an organic touch with some manzanita branches and air plants. We added some modern touches with acrylic elements throughout; a clear cake pedestal filled with flowers and foliage, clear flower girl baskets with white petals, and frosted table numbers in a super modern font. Our ring bearer box was actually a super simple DIY project, it’s a clear acrylic soap dish filled with brown sugar instead of sand since the groom thought this would be “sweeter”. The rings are nestled in a shell, actually one of the escort card holders. Our escort cards were white gloss cardstock in shells set atop a mirrored base. Our cake was lemon and coconut flavored cupcakes with buttercream frosting and fondant disks with our initials stamped into them, it was topped with a stainless steel monogram and heart I had purchased in NYC.

Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am” was our wedding march song which my very talented sister Lyssandra sang for us as the bridal party danced and clapped down the sandy aisle. For the first dance our dear friend June brought her brother’s band to play “Esto es vida” by Robi Draco Rosa (yes, the ex-Menudo turned rocker!).   I danced to “Over the rainbow”, the Israel Kamakawiwo’ole version, with my dad. This song has always made me feel nostalgic but that night it was just magical, while we were planning the wedding we learned that my dad had cancer and his last chemo treatment had been the week before our wedding, fortunately he was well enough to walk me down the aisle.

As a surprise Juan arranged for my sister to sing Bruno Mars’ “Just the way you are” just for me, so sweet! Juan has a thing for Brazilian music and culture and during the last year had learned Portuguese in order to better communicate with his clients at work, so as a surprise for him I had a Brazilian batucada come in during the middle of the reception. The music was so intoxicating I don’t think we sat down again after this, we had so much fun dancing salsa, merengue, bomba, ska; a tiki torch was even turned into a limbo stick!

I don’t think we could have imagined a more magical day than what we had, with the ocean as a backdrop and an evening filled with dancing under the stars. We felt very fortunate to be surrounded by the people we love and we hope to be able to celebrate our anniversary on the beach every year!

Gulnara Studio ~ Intimate Puerto Rico Wedding

Destination weddings take on many shapes and many styles ~ for many reasons. Today’s wedding from Gulnara Studio is for THE very best reason of all! Stephanie and Nomar were married this past spring in Puerto Rico …

Their wedding was not only a celebration of their love for each other, but their love for their family and friends … no holds barred. And as you’ll see from these spectacular images from Gulnara, Stephanie’s stunning Monique Lhuillier wedding gown was just as spectacular the next day for a romantic day-after shoot on the beach! See the whole gallery here.

Stephanie and Nomar’s wedding celebration ~ before, during AND after ~ is right here!

We were married May 22nd at the stunning Horned Dorset Primavera in Rincon, Puerto Rico. My husband was born in Puerto Rico; he shared this amazing island with me the first year we started dating and since then we have returned often. Puerto Rico holds a special place in both our hearts, we just feel at ease there. This is why upon getting engaged we decided there was no other place either of us could have imagined getting married.

When planning we decided we wanted an intimate, simply elegant wedding. The grounds of the Horned Dorset are incredibly beautiful so we did not want to overdo any of the decorating. Candles and simple flowers were all we used in both the ceremony and reception space.  The ceremony was held on the balcony overlooking the Caribbean Sea; the views could not have been any prettier. After the ceremony we had a cocktail hour on the veranda and then proceeded to the formal dining room for dinner.

Some of my favorite memories have been made while sitting at the dinner table with family and friends; this is why we decided to have a formal sit down dinner with low background music. We really wanted all of our guests to enjoy the incredible food by Chef Aaron while enjoying the company of family, friends and good conversion. Of course we still wanted to party and celebrate! So after dinner everybody went back down to the veranda to dance the night away!

From Ceci…Working in the wedding industry for almost seven years now I was often asked, “when is it going to to be your turn to get married, Ceci?” I would always smile and secretly wish to myself that that day would come sooner than later. Luckily, my dream came true last year and my husband Alan Johnson and I finally got married (after being together for 6 years!). I was all smiles and happy tears when he proposed to me on our favorite beach in Rincon, Puerto Rico. It was the best day of my life! Until our wedding day.

Originally wanting to get married in Spain, but with two sets of parents that did not have passports (nor any desire to get them) we chose to do an intimate destination wedding celebration in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Old San Juan has the old world characteristics and charm of Spain that I loved. And the venue, Hotel El Convento’s architecture was inspired by Spain so it ended up boasting all the details I was looking for.

We celebrated with 60 of our closest friends and family starting with the ceremony at five o’clock in the cathedral. I had a live string quartet that played traditional classical music for the ceremony. It was so lovely. My favorite part besides seeing Alan’s smiling face at the altar waiting for me, was my dad walking me down the long aisle. My dad has always been an inspiration to me. Not only has he taught me so much in my life but his strength and dedication has set such a great example for me to follow. So this was my moment with my Dad who also recently was diagnosed with Cancer. So the fact that he could be there on this day meant everything to me.

Guests received our wedding programs rolled up and tied with a burgundy ribbon to an ornate wooden fan to keep them cool.  We did a flat program that simply highlighted our ceremony details and wedding party. In my program, I also gave a nice “In loving memory” dedication to my grandmother who had passed away many years ago. Her one dream was to live long enough to see me get married. Well, she did live to be 93 so I guess I just waited too long. Regardless, I knew she was there in spirit.

After the ceremony everyone walked across the street to the courtyard of El Convento and were greeted with sangria and mojitos while live spanish guitar music filled the evening air. Paper lanterns were strung overhead along with white twinkle lights that dangled from the trees of the courtyard. I wanted the cocktail hour to be very light and glowy from candle light and lanterns. I even made paper wraps of my invitation designs that I wrapped around the votive candles to bring in some of my design details to decorate the tables. Passed hors de’ouvres of traditional Puerto Rican delights swirled around the party while the cocktails were enjoyed.

Once cocktail hour was over the large 50 foot wooden doors opened and invited guests to come into the ballroom. I wanted the decor to be dramatic and exotic. The three long tables were positioned in a U shape so the seating would be intimate. Like a big dinner party. A feast of family and friends, I like to say. I also had the idea to break up my wedding party and seat them sprinkled throughout all the tables. That way it would encourage conversations and Alan and I got to sit with some of different guests that maybe we didn’t get to see the night before at the rehearsal dinner. It worked out perfectly.

The tables’ centers were lined with candles of all sizes that provided the nicest glow. I paired different candelabras, and pillar candles of varying sizes to create dramatic heights. They were covered in local red orchids and black magic roses. I did round menus out of red paper with gold foil stamping which shimmered in the candlelight. Each guest’s name was calligraphed on red paper and paired with a single red orchid and peacock feather at their seats. My table signs were displayed on black lace Spanish fans and named after our three favorite beaches in Puerto Rico. When guests entered the space, they found my escort cards – which were in the shape of fans with an intricate laser cut pattern – and placed on the table with votive candles and red orchids.

We danced our first dance to Frank Sinatra’s, “Zing went the strings of my heart”. They lyrics were perfect for us and I loved how it started out slower and then turned into a swing dance.  My dress was an Oscar de la Renta gown. It was incredibly detailed and unique. It was all made of hand-embroidered detailing with bits of folded fabric, beading and organza. My favorite part was the blue lining. It was my “something blue.” Cole Haan generously gave me shoes which I proudly wore all night long. My bridesmaids wore the peep toes from the Ceci Air Bridal Collection. We dyed them red to match their gowns. I also chose to have them all carry bouquets of red black magic roses so the color became really intense and dramatic.

Since Alan and I love to eat and especially love the foods of different cultures, I wanted to incorporate the local Puerto Rican flavors into our meal to make it different. It was a five course sit down meal and the staff at El Convento was top notch. After dinner was finished the dancing began and we rocked out all night until around 11 when we cut the cake. April Reed from April Reed Cake Design designed my cake and flew bits and pieces of it in then finished in a local apartment in Old San Juan.

After the cake, we had a surprise entertainment appear. A local Puerto Rican percussion band, called the Batukada, came in and got everyone out of their seats with traditional drum songs and horns. Sort of salsa like sounds. Everyone loved it and the energy was flowing. I loved the infusion of the local culture.

A few more fun details that we infused…for an extra decor element, I printed my wedding logo on a sheer paper and wrapped them around glass vases with candles in them and had them line the stairs up to the balcony. Enticing guests to go upstairs where there was this huge mural painted on the wall. I had my photographer set up an extra camera so guests could go get their pictures taken with the mural as the backdrop. It was sort of my version of a fun photo booth.  Also, at my cocktail hour I collected local postcards from Puerto Rico and laid them out on a small table next to a crystal bowl. With a message on one of the sample postcards that said “please write a postcard to the newlyweds and we will mail it to them while they’re on their honeymoon”.

So one of the reasons that we wanted to revisit Ceci’s GORGEOUS wedding (you can see her DIY make-up and hair tips right here) was to celebrate her brand spanking new, online lifestyle magazine, CeciStyle. The gorgeous e-glossy launched this weekend and is filled to the brim with resources for the latest trends in invitation design, etiquette and fabulous new products finds. It’s Ceci’s approach to living a beautiful, style savvy life.  Pair that with the totally revamped Ceci New York site and you have a recipe for complete perfection!

Caribbean Wedding In Viequez From Hurwitz Photography

As we said yesterday, when our brides share a bit about who they are, how they came about choosing their wedding venue and other planning details of the day … well, it just makes it SO much more personal!  Today’s featured LBB photographers, Hurwitz Photography asked Nicole and Ryan to fill us in on their amazing day …

Eeeek! Where do I begin?

How we met?  Ryan and I met the during my first few weeks of law school, down in Tucson. He was the upper-classman, and he used to flirt with me by offering study aids and tips. Everyone was on to him when they saw us whispering in the library during Finals. I have to admit, it was pretty cute.

Why Vieques?  I am Puerto Rican, and it has always been a huge part of who I am. I am so proud of my cultural heritage, and the fact that Ryan appreciates that part of me is so amazing. About 4 months before he proposed to me, we took our first trip to the Puerto Rico together. I go back every year, but we had never taken a trip out there together. He wanted to meet my whole family, and see the beautiful island that had a hold of my heart even all the way out in Arizona. We went during the holiday season, and there was nothing cuter (or funnier) than watching a room full of my crazy, loud Puerto Rican family dancing and singing and trying to talk to Ryan. He speaks very, very little Spanish.

While we were there, I decided to take him to a special little island- the island of Vieques, a few miles off the coast of Puerto Rico. I had visited a few times as a child, but due to the Navy occupation of Vieques- it wasn’t that fun of a place to vacation. But, in 2003 the island was freed of Navy occupation, and now there was the whole undiscovered, and unspoiled tropical island for us to enjoy!

Well, Ryan and I fell in love with it. It is truly Paradise Lost. One afternoon, while sitting on the beach (which we had all to ourselves), we decided that we wanted to share the happiness and beauty that we felt with our family and friends. We knew we would get married on Vieques. It was the perfect combination- a place that we discovered together, and yet still a place connected to Puerto Rico.

Shortly after we visited, the island was written up in Travel and Leisure, NY Times, and several other publications for it’s stunning beauty- and hailed as one of the last untouched islands that was within reach.

Planning a wedding on a 20 mile by 7 mile small island was not without its challenges. There was one hair dresser on the island. There are no real grocery stores, and there are only 2 gas stations. When rental cars sell out- your guests are out of luck. And speaking of transportation, all of our guests would have to first fly to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and then either take a 2 hour long ferry boat ride, or a small 8-person prop jet to the island. But, we were so lucky…50 guests made the journey out to celebrate our marriage with us. We celebrated by hosting a whole week of wedding festivities with everyone.

We were lucky ~ yes, I had all of these beautiful images and visions in my head about what kind of wedding I wanted, but really, how could we go wrong with the stunning backdrops the island had to offer? We had help planning with a woman living on the island, and so despite the major limitations and few resources on the island, we were able to bring all of my SMP inspirations to Vieques! You should have seen my luggage- I swear half of what was in there were prints and pictures of inspiration! I hadn’t met any of these “vendors” before, and had to wait until I got there to show them what I had in mind. But, I have to say that I was so impressed- my cake especially turned out so beautifully!

One of my husband’s major requirements for our wedding was that he be allowed to wear sandals! So, a beach wedding was in order. The day before our wedding, my husband and I took some time by ourselves, and drove out to the beach. We kept walking along the sand, until we found a spot that felt right. It was so special to select that little spot of sand that we were going to stand at and become husband and wife. It was one of my favorite memories.

We rented out an absolutely amazing private villa overlooking the ocean for our wedding reception. We have never even been close to anything of this magnitude before. The backyard lent itself well to a tented, outdoor reception, complete with our DIY lanterns and lots and lots of twinkling white lights. We had tiki torches light the pathway for our guests, as there was no real other lighting as the sun set. It was so amazing to dance with my new husband and my father surrounded by all of the people I love one one side, and the Atlantic ocean on another.

I was so determined to have a tent filled with white paper lanterns at my wedding. Little did we know what a project that was going to be! I spent the morning and day of our wedding getting pampered, and getting ready. My poor husband, and his poor groomsmen spent the WHOLE day under the sweltering June Caribbean sun hanging a million paper lanterns with fishing wire to our tent! My new husband was up against the clock and he told me later that he only had about 20 minutes to get ready for the wedding! Had I known it would be that miserable, I wouldn’t have let them do it! But, it was so beautiful, and made me really happy to see.

Our wedding was so amazing, and of course we will remember and treasure it forever. But, I think we most enjoyed being able to share “our” island with everyone, and creating those lasting memories with each person there. I think our wedding in Puerto Rico really made Ryan feel so a part of my culture. And that makes my heart truly happy.

Oh wow!! Congratulations Nicole and Ryan on a spectacular celebration!  And thank you, thank you, thank you to Michelle & Harrison Hurwitz for capturing ~ and sharing ~ the beauty!
