Destination Wedding in Puerto Rico at El Conquistador

When a weddings as gorgeous as this one from Lindsay Madden lands in our lap, I kind of want to cry with happiness. Because it’s not everyday we get to bask in this kind of beauty. Planned to perfection by Rosalina Torres with gorgeous florals from Blanco By Mara and stunning stationery from Julie Song Ink (I’m pinning every piece the moment this goes live), this gallery is pure bliss.

From Lindsay Madden PhotographyOh how I love shooting weddings in the Caribbean! I’m a beach girl at heart and love nothing more than soft sand and clear blue water. So when Adlin reached out to me about photographing her destination wedding in Puerto Rico, I was beyond excited. Adlin and Matt were married on a lovely October day on top of a cliff which provided the most breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea and Palomino Island. Adlin and Matt envisioned their wedding day to be intimate, unique and centered around their family and friends. Adlin knew exactly what she wanted design wise and she teamed up with Rosalina Torres to bring her vision to life. Adlin and Matt chose the colors blush and gold for almost everything. This pastel pallet complimented the light blue and green hues of the Caribbean Sea. Adlin asked her three sisters to be her bridesmaids and they all looked gorgeous in their blush pink Twobirds bridesmaids dresses. Their look was pulled together with a simple bouquet of white roses created by Blanco by Mara. Adlin’s lace Monique Lhullier wedding dress was perfection and I loved her Twigs & Honey headpiece. Adlin and Matt’s cocktail hour and reception were held outside and guests enjoyed a lovely seated dinner first and then danced the night away. I had a wonderful time capturing Adlin and Matt’s destination wedding in Puerto Rico and I hope to return soon!

Tropical and Glamorous Wedding at St. Thomas Ritz

With a love story that began underwater, it only feels fitting that a Ritz Carlton St. Thomas ceremony followed suit. Strawberry Milk Events came alongside the couple to plan their dream seaside soiree bursting with East End Flowers. Subtle patterns of (real!) wallpaper – from paper cones to table runners – were a lovely ode to the Bride’s family business while Sylvie Gil was beautifully capturing all the tropical glamour here.

From Julie at Strawberry Milk EventsAn elegant fun destination wedding weekend, 100 of their nearest and dearest gathered to celebrate their wedding. The night before the wedding there was a colorful beach bash with a carnival theme. We embraced classic glamour in a tropical setting. The muted palette showcased gorgeous scenery. With shades of white, cream, and a pale aqua accented against gold and lucite. We honored the Bride’s family by incorporating their family business, York Wallcoverings, as a subtle pattern through the day. Using real wallpaper into the details of the day, paper cones, petal toss, menus, invitations, escort cards, and table runners. It was a beautiful celebration.

From the Bride… We met by accident at a cocktail party. William asked me if he could take me on a date. He had trouble remembering my name and called me “Allison” when he asked me out. We went on that date 4 years ago and the rest is history.

As a birthday present William got me scuba diving certification classes and to complete my certification I had one last dive in Cozumel, Mexico. When I was underwater my future husband showed me a shell and lifted it up from the ground and when he opened the shell there was a diamond.. He proposed right there on the spot UNDERWATER! Which was pretty smart, because he didn’t have to say anything, plus the diamond looked extra big underwater :)

What was special about our wedding was the idea of creating a vacation getaway for everyone. Originally we were going to have our wedding in his hometown, which was going to require a long commute for everyone, especially for those guests who were coming from outside the U.S. So, we decided to change our whole plan and choose a beautiful vacation destination-the Caribbean. We chose St. Thomas, USVI.

We wanted it to be easy and exotic all at the same time. A place people might not ever get a chance to visit. We wanted a smaller, more intimate feel but with enough options of things to do. The choice of resort was extremely important with the requirement that everyone stay at the resort. Since English was the native language, US currency and cell phone reception was everywhere. There was a built in convenience factor that helped us make our destination decision. The setting of the resort, while large enough to accommodate all of our guests, was still very intimate, creating the environment for our 125 guest to meet and get to know one another over the course of the long weekend. Also helpful was the shared experience of participating in daily activities we planned like group snorkeling, a sailing Regatta and Beach Olympics.

Since I work in the family business of manufacturing wall coverings, we used wallpaper to accent the wedding decor – from the invitations and table runner to programs and pocket squares for the groomsmen. My wedding dress was from Monique Lhuillier, style-Luminere bought in Washington, DC. My shoes were custom-made by Kate Spade.

From Mary Bartolucci… Good tunes, breathtaking views, and creative minds are just some of the elements that helped make Natalie and Scott’s wedding day unforgettably harmonious. Literally. Musical theater is a big part of Natalie’s life, and with a wedding party that shared the same talents and love for performing they all joined in during the ceremony recessional playing percussion and dancing down the aisle to ‘I Choose You’ by Sara Bareilles. The joyous vibes from their ceremony at the historic Annaberg Ruins carried through to their reception at The Waterfront Bistro.

Soft peach and white roses with accents of mint and gold looked so elegant in all the flower arrangements. The dinner tables had subtle mint touches in the ribbon and menus while the ocean views remained the focal point. All the paper details were designed by Scott, who is a senior art director. Even the adorable welcome bags had Scott’s creative touch and the guests loved them! We look forward to seeing what the future holds for these talented, creative newlyweds!

Natalie and Scott’s wedding week started with beach days, boat trips and welcome parties and ended with a cheerful wedding celebration that left guests smiling and dancing all the way home. The evening was full of delicious food, surprise performances, tropical cocktails, and lots of dancing! Love was in the air and it was felt by all; simply beautiful.

Coral Bahamas Destination Wedding

As those winter blues start to sneak in, this island affair couldn’t have come at a better time. It’s a wedding from the lens of KT Merry, and at the center of it all happens to be top model, Amy Lemons and her love, Taylor. It’s a boho-style, toes-in-the-sand kind of day, and thanks to the help of Little Island Design the whole shebang was planned to perfection. See more for yourself right this way.

Over the last 15 years, Amy Lemons has established herself as a top model gracing the covers of various Vogue’s, Haper’s Bazaar, Elle, and Marie Claire to name a few and shot with some of the most prestigious photographers of all time, such as Steven Meisel, Mario Testino, and Bruce Weber. It wasn’t long before she was shooting campaigns for Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton, Versace, Abercrombie, Ralph Lauren and more. It became evident that Amy was the new “it girl” and well on her way to becoming a household name. As a self- confessed tomboy and small town girl from Richmond, Virginia her life had truly been quite the fairytale.

In 2007 Amy knew there was more for her to achieve. Deciding to take a brief hiatus from modeling Amy went back to pursue her education, graduating with a B.A. degree in History from UCLA. It was during this time she began to place an emphasis on her future and how she could utilize her success of the past decade to give back and advocate for other girls coming into the spotlight after her. Returning to the modeling world in 2010, she started to work with the Model Alliance, a non- profit organization working for Models’ rights in the workplace. This sense of balance ultimately drew her out of the fast paced lifestyle of New York and Los Angeles and back to her simplistic way of life back in Charlottesville, Virginia. It was here her life would change forever as she met her fiancé, Taylor Suttoon.

The couple was introduced by Amy’s best childhood friend at a Christmas party in 2010. Their mutual love of the outdoors, sports and dogs contributed to a relationship that developed quickly. Taylor proposed in 2012 and Amy said “yes” as their two dogs approvingly looked on. It was this moment that the fairytale came full circle and her life was complete.

Taylor an outdoorsman and advocate for environmental issues grew up in Charlottesville and attended The University of Virginia. Now working for his family’s oil business, he truly is the perfect balance to her picture perfect life.

Amy and Taylor were married on May 25, 2013 on Harbour Island, a tiny island off the North East Coast of North Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas. Amy first fell in love Harbour Island on a fashion shoot for Victoria Secrets with the acclaimed Mario Testino and dreamed of a future wedding on its pink sand beaches. The small island navigated only by golf cart, is the picturesque scene for the couple. The theme of the upscale beach escape is one of relaxing romance. Inspired by the pink and gold colored sand and blue/green colors of the ocean the wedding colors were
coral, turquoise, and gold.

The weekend began on Wednesday night when approximately 40 guests arrived for the long Memorial Day weekend. On Thursday, the men took off on chartered boats fishing for bonefish in the surrounding waters of Harbour Island, while the ladies enjoyed a luncheon/pool party at the Lemons’ private house, The Fig Tree.

After a day on the beach, the rehearsal dinner on Friday night for all attending guests took place at the Rock House Hotel and Restaurant. The resort was previously owned by Versace’s builder Jay Wallace Tut and is a perfect example of the island’s laid back shabby chic style. The event took up the entire lower terrace of the restaurant overlooking the harbor.

On the big day Amy wore an elegant yet ethereal gown by Claire Pettibone to pull the entire mood together.

Amy and Taylor were married on the beach in front of the Ocean View Club at sunset. Amy’s father, Justice Donald Lemons of the Virginia Supreme Court, married the couple in association with a Bahamian Anglican priest. The wedding was orchestrated by Ben Simmons of Little Island Designs. Ben is a native of Harbour Island and known for producing beautiful beach weddings. His mother, a Cordon Blue trained chef, works with him in their upscale menu and food preparation and owns the trendiest store on the island, Miss May’s. Ben specializes in pop-up wedding receptions on the beach incorporating the natural inspiration of the setting and using driftwood, conch shells, weathered furniture, tents with chandeliers and local flowers such as tuberous, lilies and birds of paradise to create a warm and comfortable outdoor atmosphere. The reception and dinner offered family style servings of local seafood such as Conch Beignets, local snapper with papaya salsa, and lobster. The open bar featured signature cocktails, the Dark and Stormy (dark rum and ginger beer) picked by the groom and Patron Mojitos, selected by the bride. Barefoot guests danced to live music and ended the evening around a bonfire.

The fashion forward guests, including close friends and top models Sara Ziff and Maggie Riser, partook in what will be one of the endearing and romantic experiences two people can share. For Amy what once was a magical fairytale is now a dream come true.

From Ben Simmons of Little Island Design… Destination weddings are challenging at the best of times..we do twenty a year or so and there is always that little challenge that bites at your comfort zone…So when Amy began throwing around terms like gypset, haute hippie, boho chic I was a little nervous. Harbour Island is three miles long by half a mile wide and not exactly a bustling metropolis with rental options. None the less we began to piece together a story and when I finally got to met Taylor and Amy, I wasn’t the slightest bit worried. Such a lovely couple – beautiful and down to earth.

Amy was set on sophisticated yet laid back affair that was deep in romance and soul yet unrestrained in convention. The design components were broken down into details that communicated a sophisticated vintage style, bohemian or hippy-ish feel and rugged textural carefree experience. Of course we opted for beach event, with the always impractical but enduring hope for tent less reception.

For a vintage sophistication we hunted for gold or brass – I recently smuggled a bunch vintage brass taper holders back from Ireland so I excited to have an opportunity to use them. I also happened to have collection of vintage gold Thai Cutlery with rose wood handles which were a perfect for the tables. I generally hate anything plastic, but we had gold acrylic chargers and so they completed our place setting.

For a hippy, bohemian feel we decided that musical instruments might a interesting and unique detail to incorporate. My family has a small hotel that neighbors the local school. Earlier on they and inspired by a limited budget they purchased all the broken instruments they could on the island to decorate the Hotel. 30 years of salt spray had weathered them wonderfully and so we placed them in the center of each table with pops of peonies and other small decorative elements.

We were of course worried about the weather and in the end threw up one of our sail cloth tents but in fact the weather was perfect on the day. Tailor and Amy used our old boat for pictures and it turn out wonderfully. The biggest scare was two days before the wedding when a loose frisby chipped one of Tailors front teeth…Dentists can be as be hard to come by as vintage props on a small island. Luck was with us though and one was around when we needed him.

It was a wonderful celebration, an incredible couple, captured beautifully by an amazing photographer.

Intimate Turks and Caicos Wedding

Between the approaching cold weather and my current honeymoon research, I’m swooning over every beach photo I see. Then this wedding came across my desk and I had to stop everything. From the ocean views to the beautiful couple, this Turks and Caicos wedding has me sold. Natalie Watson captured every seaside smile and I’ll be obsessing over this gallery as I bundle up with, once again, another blanket.

From Natalie WatsonThis wedding was a very sweet and intimate celebration with only 20 guests….and I especially loved the bride’s getting ready robe!

From The Bride… Our friends and family live all over the U.S. and Canada, so it was going to be a destination wedding for our guests no matter where we got married. With that in mind, we thought there couldn’t be a better place to bring them than Turks & Caicos. We got married on a Thursday in order to “get the wedding out of the way,” leaving us the rest of the weekend to have some stress-free fun with our family and friends.

The main thing we wanted was for our wedding to feel intimate. Our goal was to have the reception feel more like a casual dinner party on the beach rather than an event at a big resort. To do that, we kept things relatively low key. We used only one long table with simple bud vases of white hydrangeas. Dinner was served family-style. Our favors were bags of s’mores, which everyone roasted at the end of the night before many of them ran into the ocean – some in their wedding attire!

Romantic Harbour Island Wedding

This destination dream isn’t just another gorgeous wedding captured by Caroline Fontenot Photographer, it’s much more than that. Surrounded by Little Island Design lush blooms and Daddy D beats, these Ocean View Club sweeties wed in true island style. From Bahamian inspired local BBQ, to the lovely libations on the lower terrace followed by a bonfire on the beach, every moment is magical and you can see it all here.

From the Bride… We fell in love with Harbour Island immediately. It is secluded and luxurious and somehow feels instantly familiar. The island is rich with vibrant architecture and friendly locals. The pink sand beaches are breathtaking and we couldn’t get enough of the perfectly clear and turquoise waters. Everyone is very friendly, and is quick to point you towards their favorite place for Conch Salad by the bay, or share their secrets for making (or simply enjoying) a good Goombay Smash. Fresh seafood is a favorite of ours, and it is a staple on every menu. We met so many charming people on our fist visit: Ben and Charlie and Andy of course, but also Claudine, who spoiled Jay with fresh English muffins each morning, and a couple from Europe that has been holidaying on the island since they were both children, as well as an elderly couple that come for their anniversary each year. The love that people have for this place is infectious. We felt like old regulars after our first visit, and knew this place would play host so wonderfully to our family and friends. We wanted our wedding celebration to also be an unforgettable vacation for our guests. The experience we had on our first visit as a couple was wholly enjoyable and we were thrilled to share our special island with the people we love.

The Ocean View Club is a slice of bohemian heaven. We instantly felt at home at Ben and Charlie’s labor of love. We invited our guests to come down to the island on the Wednesday before our wedding so that they could make a vacation of the trip. We wanted this trip to be special for everyone and thought how wonderful it would be for us all to stay together. We decided to rent the entire hotel, which made for easy planning for our guests. The Ocean View Club is the perfect size for our party, with quiet rooms in the main house for both of our parents, smaller guest suites adjacent to a beach view terrace for our young friends and siblings, and private cottage retreats for a few couples and also for ourselves. The main house feels like a home itself, with a large living area with plenty of comfortable seating and tables large enough for jigsaw puzzles and dominos. The kitchen is always open to everyone, and became a kind of gathering place each morning, the way our own kitchen does at home. The honor bar by the patio was a huge hit with our guests, allowing us the luxury of having a fully stocked bar where self-service is encouraged. The staff at The Ocean View is accommodating and friendly, and atmosphere of the place encourages enjoyment of both the beautiful island and the wonderful company we shared. We are so grateful that Ben and Charlie opened their arms and their hearts to those we love. Our favorite memories will always be at The Ocean View Club.

We hosted a welcoming supper on Wednesday evening on the terrace, kicking off the beginning of our memorable trip. Our DJ, Devon aka Daddy D, actually caught the Tuna we were served the morning of our arrival. Our days after were spent playing bocce on the beach and floating lazily for hours in the ocean, Kaliks always in hand. We invited everyone to The Landing for supper on Thursday, served on the romantic patio for sunset on Harbour Island’s harbor. Dancing and shenanigans followed at many of the island’s disco techs, with a bit of night swimming to end the night.

Our parents hosted a Bahamian inspired BBQ of local flavors and libations on the lower terrace after our rehearsal, followed by a bonfire on the beach. Jay’s father gave a toast that everyone will always remember, and Lindsey successfully sabered a bottle of champagne to the excitement of everyone. We ate until we couldn’t, and enjoyed the company of the group with a seriously hilarious game of charades. No one wanted the night to end.

Saturday morning we all enjoyed a bit of beach before the girls retired for an afternoon of pretty pampering and primping. We decided to take our photographs as a couple before our ceremony, jaunting around the island on our golf cart, drinking champagne and sharing many wonderful moments with our photographer, Caroline, and her husband Mark. Our ceremony was held on the main terrace of the Ocean View Club, presided by a dear friend of ours. We wrote our ceremony together, maintaining many of the traditional rites, but also adding our own anecdotes and flair. We hosted a cocktail party directly after, entertained by each other and a duo of local musicians. Afterwards, our beach reception took place under a gorgeous white tent. Ben and Charlie created an elegantly simple tablescape adjacent to a custom dance floor. And boy did we dance! As the evening slipped into night, we migrated between the dance floor and the whimsical living room created around a bonfire. The scene was truly breathtaking. We would not have changed a single detail. As a special surprise for Jay, we spoiled our guests with an English muffin bar at the end of the night, as a late night snack for everyone before we departed. We exited along a lantern lit path from the scene, turning for one last long look to soak in the event that was a celebration in every way we had envisioned.

Coral + Gray Jamaica Wedding

Winter is upon us New Englanders so I’m officially in hibernation mode. For the next several months I’ll be daydreaming of warm weather and beaches, starting off with this beautiful wedding in Jamaica. Under the guidance of Travel & Events With Style and captured by Dwayne Larson Photography, this celebration has me soaking up every single seaside photo and craving more.

From The Bride… Sean and I wanted to chose a destination that would reflect us as a couple – Sean has been brought up with a Jamaican influence and it has shaped his life since he was a child. When we decided we wanted a beach wedding it seemed like a natural choice for us. Plus it gave everyone an excuse to escape one of the coldest cities in Canada!

As a graphic designer, I started with the stationery design, and the everything else seemed to roll out from there. We wanted our wedding to evoke simple, casual elegance and compliment the gorgeous natural backdrop of Negril. Our color palette was coral, greys, white and a light seafoam green. I based our invitations off a casual handdrawn script I made of our names, and since it was a beach wedding I chose to incorporate stripes to give it a nautical feeling. I chose coral as our main color because it felt tropical and I knew it would look great with the clear blue water as a backdrop. I had custom rubber stamps made with a graphic of the island with a heart overlaying Negril to customize various items. I had the main invitation letter pressed, and tied the pieces together with grey and white bakers twine.

Once the invitations were tackled I got to work planning craft nights with my friends to ensure we had decor that reflected us as a couple. One of our favourite things to do as a couple is to go to see live music, and travel to music festivals. My maid of honour found vintage sheet music at a thrift store that we used to make table runners, and pinwheels to label the bride and groom chairs. We made a backdrop for the guest table out of garland made with music sheets and paper in the color palette I chose. I chose to incorporate shells to tie in the beach theme, and made boutonnieres for the wedding party and family with starfish, grass and music sheets.

We had our ceremony on the beach with the waves crashing just feet away from us. We wanted an intimate feel for the ceremony. The aisle was lined with white lanterns with ribbons flowing from the chairs, and flowing white curtains on bamboo framed the altar. For our guestbook, we really wanted something that would encourage guests to write something more personal, so we made a book with various questions for guests to answer on each page.

Making sure our friends and family had fun at the reception was really important to us, and our choices for music reflected that. We had prepared our own playlist with a wide range of motown, soul, reggae, funk and hip hop, and had spin the bottle dance offs. A highlight of the night was when guests wanted us to kiss, we made them hula hoop. To end the night we set off Chinese Lanterns over the ocean.

My friend Dwayne Larson did our photography, and my maid of honour who is lead photographer with Victoria Anne Photography couldn’t help but snap a few shots for us when she wasn’t fulfilling her attendant duties. It was so great having two people that we feel comfortable with there to capture our day.

I cannot express enough about how much our wedding planner Jaime Valdes- Riench did for us. Planning an event from so far away adds a lot of stress and she made the process unbelievably simple and stress free – she kept us on track with decisions, gave us honest feedback, coordinated meetings with hard-to-nail down vendors and seamlessly planned the flow and sequence of our event.

Chic Harbour Island Destination Wedding at Three Bees Villa

Navy stripes are my neutral, so when they are stylish scattered throughout a soiree as chic as this one – my heart does cartwheels. And rightfully so, because this ridiculously gorgeous Three Bees Villa wedding captured by Sabrina Lightbourn and planned by Little Island Designs is honestly my definition of perfection, and you can see why here.

From The Bride…Harbour Island has been a second home to me for as long as I can remember. The friendly people, unique aesthetic, world-class pink sand beach and beautiful water conjure so many happy memories. Three months after Rob and I started dating I took him to Harbour Island. When I saw that he immediately loved it as much as I do I knew that if we got married one day, it had to be there.

Once we decided on Harbour Island for our wedding I knew that I HAD to work with Ben Simmons from Little Island Designs. I knew as much what I DID NOT want as what I DID for the wedding weekend. For example, we both felt strongly about having a church ceremony, rich with tradition, and I had my heart set on the reception at Three Bees Vila, Arki Busson’s home. Furthermore, while I wasn’t looking for the traditional “beach wedding”, I also wasn’t looking to recreate a Manhattan wedding in Harbour Island. I envisioned the style to be sophisticated and chic, yet understated. I wanted to make a statement, while still complimenting the natural beauty of the location.

We hosted a Welcome Party the night before the wedding for all 150 guests, whom had travelled far and wide to be with us. My parents, Rob, Ben and I agreed that we wanted our guests experiences on Friday and Saturday nights to be as different as possible. As Saturday night would be a more formal sit down dinner on the bay side of the island, we planned the Welcome Party to be a casual Bahamian Beach Dinner on the ocean. Ben built out an area with sail clothes, long white farm tables decorated with local grasses and sea urchins and LOT’S of candles and lanterns. We served a buffet of popular local dishes – fresh conch salad prepared right before guests, grilled fish and chicken, coleslaw and peas and rice, etc. Guests drank specialty drinks put of coconut shells, the local Harbour Island band “The Brilandrs” created a very Bahamian Calypso feel, a fire dancer entertained and guests lounged by a big beach bonfire after it got dark.

For the actual wedding reception, I wanted to use a color palette different than the soft pastels people normally use down there. The classic look of navy and white has always been a personal favorite. Put it against the chic West Indies, safari-like aesthetic of Three Bees, and pepper in variations of aqua/green/turquoise – the colors of the water down there – and I quickly had a color scheme. Years ago, I came across a picture of a black and white dance floor in Beverly Hills that I fell in love with. I showed Ben the picture and asked if he could recreate it in navy and white… before I knew it we had a custom dance floor right on the waters edge! It was certainly one of my favorite style elements of the night. Another favorite style detail is the way Ben so elegantly lights an outdoor area… several shabby chic white chandeliers hanging from trees is an image that will forever be in my mind. Having worked in PR for the past 15 years, I have learned that the difference is in the details. So…. we personalized the space with other details like monogrammed pillows for all the white couches; personalized cups, napkins and matches. We tied beige and blue pashminas to the back of all the women’s bamboo dinner chairs and also provided either blue or turquoise leather “dancing shoes” for all the women, which were separated by size in four different blue and white striped canvas containers. The flowers were green or white only and the centerpieces were tall vases of palm fronds with tea lights h and small white bouquets in mirrored vases around the base. We accented the table with navy and white striped runners on top of white table clothes. The combination of the blue and white with bamboo chairs and chargers and the natural looking palm centerpieces with punches of white flowers was beautiful yet understated.

It was really important to both me and Rob to utilize as many local vendors, and to include as many Bahamian traditions as possible. Examples of some of the traditions that we included were the “Sister Act-like” church choir, wedding procession through town after the ceremony and Junkanoo, which paraded guests from dinner to dancing and desert. A few other entertainment and style elements that made our wedding so special include:

• Transportation for all guests to and from Three Bees by boat, including our arrival
• Spectacular fireworks
• The gift bags – personalized straw bags that contained a custom belt with our coral motif, personalized sunscreen and Frisbee (again with coral motif and the wedding date), a stamped pre-addressed Harbour Island postcard to me and Rob (we are still receiving them, which is really fun!), bottled water with custom labels, a bag of Sea Salt potato chips as well as goldfish and Swedish fish gummy candies, welcome book and a GREAT map of the island by my sister
• DIY turquoise burgees with everyone’s name and our coral motif, laminated and stuck to each person’s golf cart

Rustic Spring Wedding in Puerto Rico

With Mother Nature making it clear to us New Englanders that it’s time to bundle up, I’m desperately dreaming of sunshine and warmth. This colorful spring wedding at Puerto Rico’s Hacienda Siesta Alegre provides the perfect mental escape and with Amanda K‘s gorgeous photos, I’ll be soaking up this sunny celebration for the foreseeable future.

From The Bride… We met when I was 12 and he was 14 at church camp. Not sure why he ever thought a skinny girl in oversized culottes was cute, but he swears he did. We officially began dating when I was 15, a few months shy of my 16th birthday. We dated for 7 years all through high school, college, the Marine Corps, and an Iraq deployment.

As I only had six months to plan the wedding, the dress was one of the first things I tried to find. After trying on different dresses, I decided to order a custom dress online. Unfortunately, the dress did not come in as it was described. So with only three months to spare, it was truly crunch time. I knew I could no longer order a dress from a shop, so I went to oncewed.com and found the exact dress I had fallen in love with for a fraction of the price. And bonus, the owner was local and my exact same size! She was so sweet, and we have even kept in touch. As she said perfectly, “the dress has had a very special existence.”

Our vision was romantic and soft with a touch of simplicity & elegance, but we still wanted it to feel relaxed. With it taking place in Puerto Rico, we also wanted to make sure we didn’t lose the feel of the culture. We go to lots of weddings, so we decided to do away with all traditions that are just that, traditions. We kept it simple and did not have a bridal party other than the flower girls. We had a first look, didn’t smash cake in each others faces, kept our first dance at 30 seconds, and did away with Daniel going up my dress to take off my garter, along with other traditions.  We’ve always wanted a destination wedding, and since my family is from Puerto Rico, that was our first pick. As soon as I laid my eyes on the Hacienda, it was love at first sight. It was everything I wanted to evoke on our day. The scenery was perfect; the cozy bed and breakfast had an old Spanish feel, and it was located in the mountains in the rainforest. Also, having a venue that could host both the ceremony and reception was important to us as many of our family members were traveling from abroad.

My head piece, party favors, wedding invitations, and linens were all handmade by my grandma, with a little help from us. She is crafty by nature, so she was thrilled to help in every avenue possible. The invitations were a daunting task, and the wedding would have never been the same without her. My favorite detail was by far my jewelry. Daniel bought me the jewelry while in Iraq in 2009, and I have been saving it for this day since. I’ve been telling him it’s too pretty to wear with just anything, so it was a surprise when he finally saw me wear it on our wedding day. It was special and unique to us.

My most memorable moment was our first look. There are very few moments throughout the day that you get to spend alone with your groom, and those are the moments I treasure most. We exchanged heartfelt notes, and he bought me a bouquet of flowers. We soaked in the last few hours before saying “I do,” and I’m glad our photographer, Amanda, was there to capture that. In keeping the Hispanic culture alive, we had a live band (a Batucada) during the reception unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. They played traditional music with drums and trumpets and got the guests involved by teaching them typical dances. It was the highlight to our evening. We also incorporated traditional food, and piraguas (traditional shaved ice desert) were served by a piragüero, in a small colorful pushcart.

Glamorous Caribbean Inspiration

It’s no surprise that when a labor of love unites the photo talents of Lesley Castle with the event design and styling of Island Style Weddings every detail turns out to be perfectly vibrant and relaxed. Combining Caribbean flair with glamorous glitter, everything from the arrangements by Roses too to the hair stylings by Grapevine Salon captured to create a gallery fit for paradise.

From Mary BartolucciAfter months of brainstorming, pinning, and sharing collective inspiration, Island Style Weddings’ first styled photo shoot came to fruition in this labor of love! What a delight it was to work with such a talented group of island friends on this collaboration. Our creative juices were flowing with visions of romance, whimsical Caribbean colors and glamorous gold accents. We hit the ground at the crack of dawn to capture the morning light at Carolina Corral, on the east side of the island. Leah, our stunning model was a great sport in calming her horse to get just the right shot!

The cocktail hour shoot burst with colors and island flavors. MJ of Motu Bar, our mixologist nailed our vision right on the dot with the tropical garnishes and lush flavors. The cocktails, were not only lovely but quite tasty! A Caribbean inspired shoot wouldn’t be complete without coconuts…and rum of course! Loved these playful shots drinking from the coconuts. Colleen Kramper and Michelle Collins of Grapevine salon, used all the tricks of their trade to keep our models looking fresh and camera ready in the tropical heat.

There was no shortage of laughs…Lesley Castle Photography did an incredible job capturing all of the details throughout the weekend! Not a moment was missed with her attention to detail and creative eye. Based in Los Angeles, Lesley is no stranger to the islands. Having been raised on St John helped Lesley explore the essence of the island through her camera lens. Jessica, from Roses Too transformed our color inspirations and vision into stunning arrangements! The bouquets were a festive mix of textures, colors, and whimsy – absolutely breathtaking.

The table setting at Villa Rapture of St John Ultimate Villas continued with our vibrant color and gold accent theme. The gorgeous sun setting in the distance made the ‘golden hour’ beautifully romantic! A champagne toast was the perfect end to our busy day.

Although this dream team works together regularly on real weddings, this was our first inspired shoot. As long time island residents and wedding professionals, it was magical to see our vision come together. We hope that this shoot warms your heart as much as it did ours. Enjoy!

Heartfelt Punta Cana Elopement

The powerful love that these two have for each other, made my heart swell and my eyes well with tears mere seconds into their powerful elopement film from PF Films. Happy tears, because Amber and John’s strength is awe-inspiring to say the least. With Amber facing a diagnosis of breast cancer, they chose to dive into the struggle head first, together, and this is their story.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/105889887 600 338]

From PF FilmsWe sometimes get requests for weddings that simply melt our hearts. About 2 weeks prior to this event we received a touching letter from Amber looking to film her last minute elopement to John. Amber was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer. There wasn’t a big bridal party, fancy venue with bright lights, or a huge Dance Party. There was Amber, her fiancé John, and us. Of course not to mention the incredible scenery of Punta Cana.

This story is the single most powerful film we have worked on.

Tropical Great St. James Weddingmoon Inspiration

Happy Friday, SMPers! Around these parts, sprinkles of snow and wintry cold weather is the norm this time of year, but that doesn’t mean we don’t like to dream of sand between our toes and a soft ocean breeze. So when a bit of tropical goodness comes our way in the form of this lovely little shoot from Island Style Weddings, you won’t hear us complaining. And for those of you considering a weddingmoon? You might want to spend some extra time cozying up to the gallery from Sara Wight!

From Island Style WeddingsLeah and I toured Great St James, a privately owned island between St Thomas and St John, US Virgin Island as a future wedding and vacation venue. Once we stepped on the island, it was clear we had found the perfect location for Island Style Weddings’ styled photo shoot.

Inspiration came from “Gift from the Sea”, by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. I have always loved this book written in 1955 by Charles Lindbergh’s widow. Many of my couples have incorporated passages from the book for their wedding ceremonies. Mrs. Lindbergh’s love of the ocean is complimented with her poetic insight into relationships of all kinds.

The story begins with a couple traveling to Great St James to begin a new life together on their weddingmoon. Escaping from the rushed world left behind, our couple rediscover the beauty of simplicity and each other. The island’s 164 acres provided space for exploration, playfulness, relaxation and romance.

Our vision was to enhance the rustic nature of the island, without distraction from the natural beauty that surrounded us. The soft colors of mint and sea foam in the dresses looked gorgeous against the natural colors of the surrounding sand and crystal waters. Accents of purple flowers in all shades helped bring vibrancy to the location. Subtle hints of ombré and various textures helped create the effortless feeling we were after.

One of my favorite parts of working on a styled shoot is collaborating with such a talented group of wedding professional. As wedding designers, photographers, stylists, pastry chefs, caterers, florists and mixologists our usual focus is translating our clients visions for their perfect Caribbean celebration. I love to team up with this group to share ideas and allow our creative juices to flow.

Elegant Bahamas Wedding

When you grow up visiting a destination as gorgeous as the One & Only Ocean Club in the Bahamas, it’s sort of a no brainer to gather up your nearest and dearest and head down there to say your I do’s. That’s exactly what this beautiful Bride and her Groom did. Tracie Domino Events made sure the day went off without a hitch and the result is tropical goodness galore. Beyond the island style details, calypso and love fill the air in this gallery from Sam Hurd and the film from Voila Cinematic.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/104816049 600 338]

From the beautiful Bride…John and I grew up eight miles down the road from each other. We went through nearly three decades of missed connections and visiting the same local haunts throughout our neighboring New Jersey towns. When we met – it was swiftly clear to us both that we soon asked – where have you been all my life? Fate finally brought us together in late summer of 2011 in our current hometown – New York City. I wore a white dress that evening and as soon as I walked through the door of that crowded Manhattan restaurant, Johnny said he knew instantly that I’d wear white again – as his bride.

Now we are inseparable in so many ways – perhaps to make up for lost time! We live together, work together, commute together and have a French bulldog, Gemma, together. As we are true partners in love and life, I wholeheartedly shared with John the paradise I’ve been visiting with my family for over 20 years.

The One&Only Ocean Club will always hold a special part of my heart – I grew up visiting ‘The Lady’ in the Augustinian Cloisters, always dreaming that perhaps someday she’d witness my vows and look after the little girl that came to Paradise Island every so often to ‘say hello’.

My wish came to life on June 28th 2014 with the help and love of so many and I am eternally thankful for everyone who traveled to the Caribbean to support the beginning of our new life together.

We arrived in the Bahamas on the Wednesday prior and were fully drawn into the whirlwind of emotions and excitement for the experience a year in the making. Colored only by the hues of a legendary sunset, our celebrations began with an all white-attired and decorated welcome-party on the Beach Deck. A calypso band brought in the local flavor as our guests unwound to island time underneath luminous paper lanterns.

After a wonderful night surrounded by our nearest and dearest – we knew the best was yet to come.

Our ethereal wedding evening unfolded like I had imagined – a ‘Midsummer’s Night Dream’ basked in the warm glow of periwinkle votive and floating candles, crystal chandeliers and the Bahamian breeze. Mercury glass and towering centerpieces overflowed with ivory garden roses and lush hydrangeas in vibrant shades of purple. Our menus, table and place cards adorned with a beautifully flourished font and a customized seahorse motif, carried throughout the wedding weekend. Tracie Domino, Grymes Cannon and team entirely captured the romantic elegance we discussed to perfectly compliment the magic and our sentimental love of the Ocean Club.

Later in the night as John and I sat together, relishing in our joy and gratitude – whilst our family and friends danced under the influence of happiness (and Bahama Mamas!) – we looked up the illuminated tiers of the Versailles Gardens to the Cloisters from our seats – where ‘The Lady’ glowed, watching over our most perfect memory.

Tropical Destination Wedding at Dreams La Romana

Through my eyes, destination weddings are a treasured vacation wrapped inside a memorable celebration. So, it’s no surprise that this stunning nuptial perfectly planned by Dreams La Romana and captured by Asia Pimentel Photography is pure paradise. Escape the ordinary and hop on over to the gallery for more.

From the Bride… Brett and I would have never considered a destination wedding if my sister hadn’t suggested it while we were looking for wedding venues locally. The idea of getting to spend a vacation with family and friends instead of just a few hours one night just made sense to us. We also were busy finishing graduate school, so going to a resort that took care of most of the details was appealing to us as well. One of the first sites she sent was Dreams La Romana, and after looking, at many more resorts we decided it was the best choice. We looked at as many pictures and reviews as we could find since we didn’t have a chance to go to the resort before our wedding.  We wanted to make sure we picked a location that would be beautiful for our wedding as well as an enjoyable vacation for our friends and family.

Planning the wedding mainly over email was stressful at times, but it did make it much easier that the resort truly does take care of everything. After exchanging many emails with our wedding planner at Dreams, we finally got to meet her when we got to the resort, and all of the stress faded away. She took care of every detail we wanted and even a few surprises.

Our wedding day was pretty much stress free from the start! My day began on the beach with family and friends followed by some time in the pool overlooking the beach. I was confident our wedding planner, Jenny, had every detail taken care of, so I was able to relax.

Our photographers, Asia and Nikolay, arrived for us to begin getting ready, and we were immediately happy they would be the ones capturing our big day. They were with us throughout our wedding day and captured so many beautiful moments. They captured little details for us to look back at forever. For example, they took pictures of Brett’s shoes. Brett had wanted these shoes (Cole Haan Nike Air Wingtips) for our wedding for years before we were even engaged. By the time we were engaged, they no longer sold them! Luckily, my dad searched far and wide for them on the internet and eventually found a pair that I gave to Brett to wear for our wedding.  They also captured one of my favorite moments, the walk up the aisle after getting married when our family and friends threw flower petals. This was one of the surprises our wedding planner prepared, and it was perfect.  Now we get to relive those moments looking at our pictures.  I cannot say enough about how happy we are with all of the photographs.  Our photographers are truly talented.

We enjoyed every aspect of our wedding from the ceremony through the dancing. Not only was the Dreams wedding planner great, the waiters and DJ were great as well. The service and food were wonderful! In the end, we were so happy with our decision to do a destination wedding.

Romantic Wedding at Trunk Bay Beach

I’m crossing my fingers that a friend will do a destination wedding. Witnessing “I do’s” combined with a vacation seems like the best arrangement ever. Seeing the pure joy on this bride’s face, you can tell just how relaxed she was, loving every beautiful moment. Elisha Orin and Nazareth Road Productions joined the party, capturing every sunny smile and beach sunset, all available to feed our wanderlust here.

From The Bride… After meeting in Italy 4 years ago, living in separate cities (Chicago and Dallas), it only seemed fair to have a destination wedding. Marco proposed at the Art Institute of Chicago, which was beautiful and sentimental. I majored in Art History in college and it was one of our favorite places to go. In front of beautiful Renoir paintings, I said yes! He presented my great grandmothers diamond in a beautiful halo setting, and later we both selected David Yurman wedding bands with matching cables.

Our wedding was mostly homemade with coordination help on the island by Island Bliss Weddings. Our style was filled with DIY decor, soft and flowing fabrics, destination travel, Italian and Southern roots, salty air you can almost smell from here, and a gorgeous background that will make your jaw drop. The guests and bridal party spent a week in paradise leading up to the wedding. Going on snorkel trips and hiking the national park trails, new friendships were made that will last a lifetime.

All of the reception and ceremony decorations were made in the states at our small apartment and shipped to the islands to wait for the big day. Our coordinator did a phenomenal job in setting everything up exactly as we wanted. It is very rare, I am sure, that weddings go off without a hitch, however ours went by effortlessly thanks to all our wonderful vendors who helped. Our favorite part of the planning process was the invitation design, which we selected to be a boarding pass complete with map of the island. Guest tore off the RSVP portion and mailed it back to insure a checkmark next to their name! The colors we selected were deep teal, navy, and coral with hints of grey and green. We wanted to enhance the beautiful colors of the island but still select something deep since we were having the wedding in the middle of January. Our flowers were small due to our budget but we were able to get creative with their usage. Detachable arch flowers doubled as flowers for main tables at the reception, and the bridesmaid bouquets were placed in small vases around the reception to add a fresh scent. Most of the other flowers at the reception and ceremony were burlap with lace and netting complements. The programs, welcome letters, and other paper items were all designed by me in my studio and carried the island travel theme.

We are so proud to have had the opportunity to for an intimate surf side ceremony with our closest friends and family. Please accept the following images and details for this submission and I throughly hope you enjoy our wedding.

Summer Engagement in the Bahamas

I kind of want to be these people. One, their engagement session was in the Bahamas. Two, they are drop dead gorgeous. Three, they had Julie Cate Photography behind the lens to snap up some seriously envy-worthy shots.  In the lottery of life, they are totally winning, and this gallery proves it.

From Julie Cate PhotographyAshley and Ash are such a beautiful couple. They are tying the knot next spring in North Florida but for engagement pictures we went to the Bahamas, a favorite of theirs. The couple went for a fun nautical and preppy look in hues of the blue and green that tied in so well with the surroundings. A simple wide brim hat is always appropriate for the sun and playful kisses.

The last evening of the trip, we went out to catch the last bit of light as the sun set. It began to rain and almost spoiled our photos. We stayed out and enjoyed the light shower. And the pictures were lovely.

It was great to spend this time with two special friends in a beautiful place that has been so memorable to them.

Sparkling Sequin Winter Wedding

There’s nothing better than a winter wedding, in my book. And while I might be a tiny bit biased as a January bride myself, it’s soirees like this that truly prove my point. Designed in the hands of Meagan Warren, it’s layered with gold sequins, rows of candles and white florals for as far as the eye can see. Landon Jacob Productions captured the gallery and don’t miss the film from Palmetto Digital.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/100672365 600 338]

From Meagan Warren WeddingsAmanda and Michael started planning their wedding in January 2013. They knew they wanted a candle-lit Winter wedding with touches of gold and neutrals throughout. Amanda hired Meagan Warren as her wedding planner with no other vendor booked. Amanda had no idea where she wanted to have her ceremony or reception. She was open to just about every suggestion Meagan offered… a dream bride.

We booked the historic 701 Whaley building to house her ceremony and reception that took place on Saturday, December 7, 2013. The ceremony was upstairs with the reception following downstairs on the first floor. Amanda wanted a neutral and champagne-toned color palette so she chose champagne dresses for the bridesmaids and black, floor-length dresses for her honorary bridesmaids. The groom and groomsmen wore classic, black tuxes.

Our vision was composed of simple classic florals under the glow of candlelight with white, ivory, champagne and a few very soft and tiny bits of blush hued blooms. Event colors also included soft beiges, khakis and touches of gold and metallic (e.g. sequin head table linen as well as on the bar and cake tables!)

The overall decor was comprised of crystal chandeliers, white soft draping, lots and lots of candles, gold Chivari chairs, custom linens from Connie Duglin and Creative Coverings, florals from the talented ladies of Fern Studio… all complimented by delicious food from Hudson’s Classic Catering. The night was highlighted by the bride and groom’s first dance, sung by local guitarist, Chase Asmer.

Flowers included blooms such as hydrangeas, french tulips, stock, garden roses, dahlias, sweet peas, ranunculus, queen anne’s lace, white astible, ruffled edge tulips, lisianthus, scabiosa, dusty miller, lambs ear, and eucalyptus.

This bridal party, by far, has been one of the most beautiful groups we have worked with, complete with a gorgeous bride and dashing groom. A winter wonderland!

St. Martin Destination Wedding Film

I still dream about the time my family vacationed on the little island of St. Martin. It’s nothing short of paradise and an absolutely magical spot to hold a wedding. Case in point? This simple yet completely stunning “I do” right on the crystal clear waters. Our friends at Hoo Films captured the beauty (tough job, right?!) and all that’s left is to get cozy and watch for yourself.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/100264904 600 338]

From Hoo FilmsSomewhere in the French Caribbean, we landed on the small island of Saint Martin for Ashley and Tom’s long awaited wedding week! Throughout the week we had so much fun at Pinel Island and Grand Case Beach Club having lunch, hiking, swimming, and shooting underwater footage into a dreamy sunset. Wow, what a week that was in Saint Martin. And then it was time for the big day. We began at a pristine rental home where Ashley got all dolled up and Tom was looking sharp in his sear sucker suit. From there, we headed over the Dreams for the ceremony out on the pier. The scenery was beautiful and the natural noise made you really feel like you’re on a secluded island together. Just us, just the wedding. Ashley and Tom’s vows are so sweet and real, it will be hard not to tear up on this one. Following the ceremony, we moved over to a private outdoor dining area at Dreams where their reception continued with an amazing dinner, ice cream cake with sparklers, and some hot fire dancers! Enjoy all the adventures in this French Caribbean destination wedding film!

Elegant Punta Cana Wedding at Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe Hotel

This couple took their destination wedding, sprinkled in a whole lot of romance and covered it in a beautiful pink hue – leaving us with a wedding so gorgeous we could spend our entire day getting lost in Jen + Ashley‘s images. Planned and hosted by the gorgeous Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe Hotel, Punta Cana, we pretty much love every image sitting in this gallery.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/97944815 600 338]

From Jen + AshleyWe are SO excited to send over this elegant and chic, garden destination wedding! Kim + Clark both live in Chicago, but wanted their wedding to be a celebration not only for them, but for their closest friends and family in a tropical paradise to give all of their guests a chance to step back from the hustle and bustle of city life. With fun activities planned all week, including a catamaran voyage with fresh coconut drinks and dinner served on the sea, they truly wanted their guests to be able to experience all that the gorgeous Punta Cana has to offer. Not wanting their destination wedding to be too “beachy”, they opted for a gorgeous, intimate garden setting on the grounds of the Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe hotel, with swaying palm trees and wild peacocks roaming during their heartfelt and sweet ceremony. With their open-air reception space draped in perfect white linens, a whimsical ombre cake, and just the right amount of pink spread around the room, the setting tied in perfectly to the lush gardens that surrounded the venue.
