NY Meets the Caribbean in a Modern Jungle Affair at Casa de Campo Resort

[section title=”The Planning”]
[field title=”Wedding Colors”]Ceremony – Neutral (white, creams and greens)
Reception – black, silver, mustard, burgundy, green (deep various tones)[/field]
[field title=”Design / Vibe / Vision”]General details about the events:
Their wedding was a three-day event starting on Thursday with a catamaran excursion to Casa De Campo’s private island where the groom dj’ed on the beach. Friday evening, they hosted a Dominican-themed welcome party for their guests featuring a Dominican Frio Frio station, cigar rollers, and custom straw hats for every guest. After enjoying all the Dominican food, guests made their way to the sand for a dance party. It culminated with a Catholic ceremony on the steps of Saint Stanislaus Church in Altos De Chavon, followed by a wedding reception at a private ocean-side villa in Casa De Campo on February 10th, 2024.

Guests:
Their guests comprised an eclectic group of international creatives, including fashion designers, fashion founders, c-suite record label executives, start-up tech founders, SAG actors, and former NBA players.

The Planning Process:
Juan started working with Claire Duran Weddings and Events in October of 2022 to plan the engagement and, by Claire’s recommendation, also book all the wedding venues. Allie separately messaged Claire and the team in November of 2022, looking to tour venues, not knowing Juan had already planned the engagement and booked the wedding. The day before their “tour” with Claire’s team, Juan proposed to Allie and, the following day, shared with her their wedding date, February 10th, 2024. Over the 17th month process, Allie, Juan, and Claire’s team worked together, carefully crafting every detail. With both Allie and Juan having creative backgrounds, Claire’s team had maximum leeway to prepare a more vibrant, fun, and non-traditional wedding than ever before. They held calls every month discussing everything from the custom-built entrances and bars to the espresso martini station to the audiovisuals and D.J. booth. Beyond the tropical-disco aesthetic, Allie and Juan put particular attention on the music, curating the eight different musical acts over the three days, including the groom, DJ Cuatro, Dominican pop-singer Nikola Santiago, and international DJs Pat Lok and salute.

[field title=”Proposal Story”]Allie and Juan met through a mutual high school friend, who transferred from Allie’s high school in Ridgefield, Connecticut, to Saint Andrew’s School in Florida for one year. They became fast friends after first meeting at a Topaz Jones show in 2016 at Trans-Pecos in Queens. Over two years, they maintained that friendship until Labor Day Weekend in 2018, when they went on their first date. At the time, Juan took a career break caregiving for his late mother in Baltimore, and Allie commuted back and forth over weekends at the start of their relationship. Through many cities – San Diego, Baltimore, and Boca Raton – caregiving for Juan’s mom and maintaining their careers remotely through COVID, Allie and Juan’s relationship only grew stronger through the turbulent times.

With his Latin roots, Juan is a passionate man who’s never been afraid to open his heart. After knowing Allie for several years, first as friends, while seeing other people, Juan poured his heart out to Allie on their first date. He told her he loved her at dinner that night – maybe not love at first sight but at first date. Their connection was instant. Both come from creative fields, Allie, a lingerie designer at Victoria’s Secret, and Juan, an advertising executive turned tech CMO. They say relationships have a rock and a star, but Juan and Allie buck that notion. Both stars are in their own right. Individually, they are the lives of every party they attend, often not finding each other until the night ends as they’re so busy socializing.

From the beginning, it was a labor of true love to keep their relationship steady through the rollercoaster of Juan’s (and often Allie’s) caregiving for Juan’s mom during her four-year fight against pancreatic cancer that, in many ways, fortified their relationship across all the cities they lived in and did long distance from – New York, San Diego, Baltimore, Hilton Head, and Boca Raton.

Once Juan’s mom, Dr. Marta I Rendon, passed in 2021, they both returned to New York to build upon the foundations they had left behind over COVID and in-between caregiving. They operated in this new normal and re-engaged in everything they love – music, food, travel, and art.

As is tradition, each birthday is a cherished moment, regardless of the year. Each year, they write all the reasons why they love each other correlated to how old the other person is turning that year (plus one, of course). For Allie’s birthday, Juan gifted her tickets to see Adele’s residency in Vegas – after seeing Adele sing “One and Only” in person, it was forever cemented in their minds as their first dance song. Months later, Juan invited Allie’s parents and his uncle, aunt, and cousins to spend New Year’s at Casa De Campo. Three days before New Year’s, December 29th, 2022, Juan asked Allie to marry her to a resounding “yes!” In his confident, passionate, and loving way, Juan had already booked their wedding venue and date months before, which he told Allie the following day. This was welcomed news, along with working with the tremendous Claire Duran weddings and events team to plan what would be the best day of their lives.

Allie and Juan got engaged on December 29th, 2022, in Casa De Campo. Juan had planned a family vacation there over the New Year’s holiday where one afternoon, he told Allie they’d be meeting with some of his cousins driving in from Santo Domingo for a happy hour. Juan walked Allie to a lookout with a violinist and flowers surrounding them, where Allie still stood perplexed, wondering who was about to be married there. Then Juan got down on one knee and wholly shocked Allie. Their families joined them shortly after for dinner, all fully surprised by the engagement.
Juan, unbeknownst to Allie, had already been working with Claire Duran Weddings and Events since October of that year, planning their engagement and more…

[field title=”Wedding Gown”]Working as a fashion designer, the thought of choosing Allie’s wedding looks had always come as a bit of an overwhelming decision; however, to her surprise- the first dress she tried was “the one”. Allie’s Ivory ball gown was designed by Toronto-based Rita Vinieris. The gown’s hand-painted silk organza fabrication depicted Allie’s two favorite flowers, hydrangeas & peonies, and paired back with a ribbon-detailed corset bodice- a classical nod to Allie’s career as a lingerie designer. She paired this with a bespoke blusher cathedral-length veil. For shoes, knowing the precarious cobblestone aisle she needed to walk down, she wore Loeffler Randall satin block heels. The jewelry she wore was simple yet meaningful. Juan gifted her a Cartier love ring as a wedding gift the night prior, and on her neck, she wore a single diamond Cartier necklace that he had gifted her for her birthday a few years prior. Her earrings- or “something borrowed” were small gold embezzled diamonds from her mother. For Allie’s bouquet, she loved adding sentimental elements from her and Juan’s family. Tucked in the ribbon of her bouquet, she carried her grandmother’s rosary beads, a pin composed of pearls from Juan’s mother’s veil, and a handkerchief from Juan’s grandmother. For her hair styling- Allie chose a low-swept bun with classic bronzed bridal makeup, going after more peachy and gold tones.
For her second look, Allie chose a pearl-encrusted and sequin-embellished strapless mini by Watters. She updated her shoes to white Manolo Blahnik stilettos. Allie’s hair was swooped into a high ponytail for the rest of the evening.

For the welcome party, Allie embraced the authentic tropical feel of the event. She wore a linen raffia detailed white maxi strapless dress by Alexis, and for her accessories, the Bottega Veneta mini intrecciato leather clutch. Allie looked everywhere for the perfect playful statement earring – until she found these Saint Laurent Cassandre palm tree earrings. They felt like the perfect touch of tropics to match the gorgeous beachfront backdrop. For her second look, she needed to be prepared to dance in the sand into the evening; for this, she chose the Blanca Triangle Neck Dress in White Sequin from The New Arrivals by Ilkyaz Ozel. For this event, she decided to wear her hair down with more casual beachy waves, in juxtaposition to her updo’s the following day.

For the Rehearsal brunch on Friday- Allie wore a palm guipure mini by Colombian designer Andrés Otalora.

On Thursday’s beach party, Allie wore a white linen gingham printed Cult Gaia maxi dress with a Zimmerman belted textured bikini.

Juan wore a bespoke Cad and the Dandy peach suit and shirt with Common Projects sneakers at the welcome party. For the wedding, he also wore bespoke Cad and the Dandy ivory dinner jacket tuxedo. He included an outfit change into a custom Small Talk Studio jacket featuring graphics from his Florida and Latin roots.

The bridesmaids wore designer Jenny Yoo in a mix of Whisper Blue gowns. The Maid of Honors wore Bec & Bridge, Sabrina Musayev & Michelle Mason. Getting ready, the bridesmaids all wore Victoria’s Secret satin pajamas. When Allie changed into her second look, she also requested that her bridal party bring a change of dress as well to ensure that everyone was prepared to party the night away! The bridal party then changed into a mix of sequin minis from a variety of designers, including Rotate Birger Christiansen & Retrofete.

The mother of the bride wore a navy one-shoulder gown by Chiara Boni, and the Aunt of the groom wore a bespoke strapless emerald green embellished gown.
The groomsmen all wore black tuxedos.

[field title=”Florals & Decor”]From Claire Durán: Allie and Juan’s floral and decor was so much fun for our design team to develop. They were happy to take risks, to be eclectic, to let us dream big in combining different textures and colores, in ways that we knew would come together formidably.

For the ceremony, since it took place in a very classic looking area, in a setting that replicates an old mediterranean village, we kept things more traditional (yet with a twist). Since the venue was so neutral, and since we were going to be quite bold in the reception, we kept the color palette of the ceremony fully neutral, in white, creams and greens, which popped up beautifully under the Caribbean sun.

For the Reception, we worked on the space transformation for over a week. The venue was an ocean front private villa, over which we built up a clear roof supported by greenery and metal covered structure. But the bigger feat was covering the sizable pool to create more seating space. We did it in a way that the floor would be at the same level as the existing floor surrounding the pool so guests wouldn’t have even guessed a pool was underneath.

For the specific details, the main icon of inspiration was the bird of paradise flower, Allie’s favorite, which we incorporated subtly into different elements (the columns at the entrance, the wedding menues etc). We wanted to have different setup for tables, as opposed to all the same, and have a diversity of linens or surfaces, chairs and table top options. Moreover, we wanted to create an atmosphere were wood, fabric, metal, marble, mirrors, all wood blend in to give plenty of dimension to the space. We also created contrast by combining curves and sharp edges in equal measures.

Finally, the clients live in NYC and love the scene there, just as much as they love the Caribbean tropical flare. So we worked on creating tropical ephemeral gardens that further complemented the vegetation already in the house, and brought in disco lights, chandeliers and other modern elements to bring that vision to life.

Not only did we rent lots of the elements, but we also worked really closely with a fabulous studio (Eccentrico) to create beautiful custom structures from scratch: their bar, the red metal columns covers, all elements in the stage, fake boulders, entrance columns, etc. [/field]

[field title=”Special Detail #1″]Almost all the speeches included mentions of Juan’s late mother, Marta Rendon, who made a profound impact on Juan and also Juan and Allie’s relationship. As part of her Colombian background, Allie wanted to represent that although the festivities were taking place in the D.R. by gifting Juan an original Fernando Botero lithograph that she won at an auction months ago.

[field title=”Special Detail #2″]While the wedding withdrawal is real after a euphoric weekend, they could not have wished for a better wedding weekend surrounded by 300 of their family and friends who traveled from Europe to South America and across the U.S. to celebrate with them. The wedding perfectly encapsulated who they are as a couple, celebrating every moment, dancing for hours on end, and filling rooms with the love they share. The best reflection of this was the new friends and relationships that were made along the wedding weekend that have already started blooming in the weeks after.

A Dream Ballgown For a Beach Ceremony

If you’re under the impression that ballgowns and beach weddings don’t mix, this wedding will come as a pleasant surprise. The bride, Ashleigh wore her dream Lazaro dress for their toes-in-the-sand ceremony and Carrie King made magic happen behind the lens. Believe me, this is one gallery you can’t afford to miss.

From the Bride… Brian and I knew from the start of the wedding planning process that we wanted our wedding to have some very important key elements — not all of which were easy to accomplish simultaneously! We knew that we wanted our wedding to have a romantic and elegant feel while also making our guests feel at home at a spectacular party. After searching high and low from Europe to Mexico to the Caribbean, we were so fortunate to find a venue that was the ideal fit, Casa de Campo.

We were able to have a private toes in the sand ceremony, just as we had imagined for our dream wedding. Directly following, we hosted our reception in the town square of a beautiful cobblestone village on the resort property that makes you feel as if you’ve been transported back in time to 17th century Italy. It truly felt like we were living in a fairytale with the best part being that I got to marry my very own Prince Charming! We danced the night away under the stars with a local band that kept the party going until 3am. It was everything we hoped for and so much more.

The Dress: The first Lazaro gown I ever saw was in a bridal magazine. My 5 year old self decided that one day, when I got married, it would be in a Lazaro. When the time came to actually pick out my dream dress, I jumped into the hunt to find the perfect one by trying on every possible style and designer. After countless appointments from coast to coast, I finally tried on my first Lazaro gown at the Bridal Galleria in San Francisco. I had never worn anything that felt like such a complete expression of my personality. The asymmetrical lines, varied blush hues, intricate embellishments around the waist, and deep v-back all came together in such an artistic way. It was love at first sight! The icing on the cake is that I got to meet Lazaro and hear his vision for the gown. Such a dream come true.

This Destination Wedding is the Best Thing You’ll See All Day

Not every happily ever after begins with fireworks. Sometimes it starts as a casual meeting between waitress and customer, develops into a years-long friendship and turns into something more when you least expect it.  Such is the case with these sweeties, who celebrated their true life fairytale with a wedding in paradise at Dreams La Romana. Think seaside nuptials meets a non-stop celebration under the stars. See it all captured by The Veil Wedding Photography in THE VAULT.

From the Groom… Did you ever hear the story of the good friends that eventually fell in love and got married? It’s a story we’ve all seen and heard. A story we’ve all wished we were a part of. Not all of us are lucky enough to have their wish come true. How I got so lucky I will never know. She was a waitress at a little hole in the wall, I was a frequent customer.

I won’t pretend there was an instant attraction, maybe not for her anyway, I can’t even say we became instant friends. I would say it was my humor, or at least what I perceived to be humor, and her unwillingness to be anybody but herself pulled us together. Our relationship over the next couple of years which started off as server and customer began to expand beyond the walls of our little hole in the wall. Then… at some point we became single at the same time and boom! Magic. That’s how I’m going to tell the story anyway. We both have our versions of who was the one who caused the other to fall in love. I can tell you though, I was the first one to say it.

We didn’t have the normal getting to know each other honeymoon period of a relationship. We had known each other for years. It made things simple in a way that I find it hard to put into words. We had gotten past each other’s annoying quirks and didn’t spend so much energy trying to be the person we thought the other wanted. We could just be.

It was during this time when most people are discovering that the person they chose has some rather disturbing habits that we discovered in each other a wanderlust. A need to get out in the world and experience new places and new things. Travel, even small road trips to nowhere towns to see nowhere things, became the thing we looked forward to. It was in this spirit that even our first discussions about marriage we locked onto the idea of a destination wedding. But where to?

I will spare you the details of the months and months of searching and skip right to what I thought was that magical moment when we found our spot. She had always talked about wanting a beach wedding, but not on the beach. She wanted a platform or a dock made of dark wood stretching out over clear turquoise waters. There it was, a picture of the place we would start the next chapter of our lives together. A long pier jutting out into the ocean at Dreams La Romana Resort.

The save the dates went out right away, a website for our wedding went up and the next year flew by. At least that is the story I’m telling. We don’t need to scare any more perspective brides and grooms with the stress of wedding planning. I will tell you that luck struck once again when we found our wedding photographers, or should I say they found us. That is a story for another time though.

Dreams la Romana Resort. What can I say? A beautiful sprawling resort set against the white sand beaches and turquoise waters on the Southern side of the Dominican Republic. You really couldn’t ask for more beautiful scenery for any event.

After spending some time exploring the resort we met with our onsite wedding coordinator. We went through everything rather quickly and I can’t say we felt completely comfortable with handing off our year of planning to someone we just met. Yanna, our coordinator proved our insecurities wrong on several occasions though.

Our wedding weekend started off with a meet and great for our guests in the gardens. It was an event we set up with the resort ahead of time and turned out to be the perfect. Small white tables set in the grass near one of the many gazebos with a backdrop of palm trees and flowers. After the planning phase the resort took care of everything making it not only a beautiful gathering, but stress free. It was really our first chance to take a breath and enjoy our guests and each other inside the beauty of the Dominican.

Then comes the wedding day. The day started early at one of the breakfast buffets on site then Heather and I separated to get moving on the schedule our wonderful photographers set up for us. It never hit me what was actually happening while I was sitting in the coffee shop with my dad waiting for our first look photos. Then I saw her in her dress for the first time. I don’t consider myself much of an emotional person but the rest of the day almost seemed a dream as I was looking at the world through tearful eyes. I know a lot of people say this, but I truly was the luckiest person alive.

I would love to comment on the beauty of the wedding. The care and time that Yanna put into setting up the pier, but all I remember for the rest of the day was her. When we were separated right before the wedding my thoughts were consumed with when I would see her again. Then there she was, walking down the pier to cheers coming from onlookers on the beach. The family, the friends, and her. It was a perfect day.

Once the ceremony was over we took part in a cocktail hour at the end of the pier where hugs, smiles, laughter and tears of joy were on the menu along with the amazing appetizers. The bar tenders at the private bar took time to learn all of our names and by the end of the hour it was as if they were just friends celebrating with us.

Moving down the beach we found ourselves in our own private paradise where a long family style table was set up for all the guests as we shared a meal cooked fresh there on the beach with us. The decorations, the lights, the overall set up was perfect against the setting sun at the edge of the sea. The music started as we ended our meal and we danced well into the night just enjoying the majesty and joy of the day. My mom even managed to pull in several other guests from the resort to join us in our celebration and dancing.

From The Bride…If someone were to ask me my favorite part of the wedding day I don’t think I could pick, I have so many favorites. Getting ready in my gorgeous suite (whose couch was perfect for bridal portrait photos) with the sisters of my heart was beautiful, it truly made me understand how much they loved me and supported my marriage. Trying to take a girls photo while jumping on the bed, an idea that was most definitely a Pinterest fail, but that was hilarious for us. Looking back at the photos of getting ready where all the girls are bunched together I just remember the love and joy that emanated from everyone, that’s one of my favorite memories.

We had the first look with Mike and my dad outside the spa. Somehow our photographers had found the most perfect locations on the large resort in the tiny amount of time they had the night before the wedding. The scenery was unbelievably beautiful, and walking from my room to the spa I was stopped by so many strangers to take a photo or receive well wishes. We did a first look with my dad first and seeing the look on his face was something I’ll never forget. My first look with Mike was so special, but at the time I thought it may make my walk down the aisle less significant since we’d already seen each and cried together, but it was actually just the opposite. The bridal party arrived (slightly late) at the pier and everything was more beautiful that I could’ve imagined. The DJ did an awesome job of queuing the music exactly where it was supposed to be, and when the first notes of “One and Only” by Adele started playing I began my walk to the rest of my life. Seeing my almost-husband at the end of the pier has been one of the most magical moments I’ve ever had, made even more special by the guests in the water cheering as I walked down the aisle. It was an unforgettable day filled with so many favorites and firsts that I’ll treasure forever.

Dominican Republic Wedding at Dreams La Romana Resort & Spa

For those of us at SMP HQ, where it seemingly hasn’t stopped snowing since November, we crave getting lost in weddings just like this beauty from Neringa Ridges at Dreams La Romana Resort & Spa. It’s like getting a big ol dose of pretty and vitamin D at the same time, and it really doesn’t get better than that. This entire gallery is like a virtual vacation, so pack your imaginary bags and join me here.

From the Bride…It was a very rainy week in the DR up until our wedding day. We had 56 people attend the wedding from Chicago, Sweden, Germany, New York, Michigan, and Houston. The morning of consisted with a morning swim, followed by breakfast in bed that was provided by the resort. Denis & I found it surreal that our wedding day finally arrived. After breakfast he went to his room to meet his grooms men to get ready for the day. My girls and I met in my honeymoon suite and got ready. It was a sunny and super hot day – the only day without any rain. We got ready, took pictures and by the time you knew it, it was time for the ceremony. Jenny & the Dreams La Romana team did a great job getting everything ready. We had a pier ceremony & a beach reception with LED lit dance floor – highly recommend this to any bride having a breach reception! At the end of reception, we had brought sky lanterns with us for each guest to make a wish and let into the sky. This is was coolest idea as everyone loved it and it was really pretty as the sky lanterns filled up the sky with pretty lights.
