Speaking as someone who loves to play hostess, I can’t imagine anything more romantic than attending a backyard wedding. Choosing a venue with personal history surrounded by lush trees and rolling hills, Tiffany Hughes captured a day bursting with bright arrangements by Buffy Hargett and it’s pure wedding perfection. Filled with a whole lot of heart this gallery is not to be missed!
From Mariee Ami Wedding Planning Studio…We love this bold color palette of vibrant oranges, purples, plums, and rich reds! This October bride had a clear vision of what she wanted her flowers to look like, and we are glad we didn’t make any changes! Set at a family members home in Cullman Alabama looking over gorgeous rolling hills and greenery, it was the perfect backdrop for this October bride! From The Bride…When Ken and I got engaged, all I really wanted to do was elope. I’ve never been what most people would define as “girlie,” and I can honestly say that, cross my heart, I really and truly never dreamed about my wedding day as a little girl. I did have a bride costume that I liked to wear with disturbing regularity, but I can’t say it was because I wanted to be a bride. I don’t think I understood the concept. Mostly, I liked the way the faux lace swished when I ran full-pelt through mud puddles. So when I miraculously met the man who somehow found my strange, goofy, abrasive, insistently non-comforming ways attractive, and he subsequently proposed 5 years later (will miracles never cease!?), the first thing I thought was “I wonder if we could get away with eloping and announcing we’re married via a Christmas card this year…” Obviously, the answer was no. For many reasons, including the fact that Ken didn’t want to and several family members would have cried. Regardless, I knew if we weren’t going to elope, which meant we were going to have a wedding, we had to do it right. And doing it right meant being comfortable, because otherwise the Bride would be grumpy, obstinate and generally unpleasant all day long. A wedding involves a party, and parties for grumpy people are no fun. When I think of comfort, I think of family and when it came to location, it really had to be my aunt and uncle’s gorgeous home in Hanceville, Alabama: Prospect Mountain. Aside from this location being, literally, a stunning white French chateau atop a mountain, surrounded by lush trees and looking over the rolling hills of central Alabama, it’s also a reflection of my family’s utter refusal to be relegated to a single definition. Inside this stunning masterpiece of a house, there’s elk heads on the wall. Also a water buffalo. The master bath, where my girls and I got ready day of the wedding, is a cavernous marble room with gleaming fixtures and mirrored surfaces. The master closet, connecting to the elegant bathroom, is literally bursting with various forms of camoflage hunting gear and mud covered boots. In a word, it was perfect. Confirming the location was the first step in determining the rest of the wedding details. And it was the last one we made by ourselves. We knew three things were certain about our wedding day. 1) We’d end the day married. 2) It would be at Prospect Mountain. 3) Everyone would have a blast because all the details would fall into place effortlessly. We were confident we could accomplish the first two items on our own. The third? Please. You might as well ask a five year old to produce a perfectly executed double back handspring. We went to Mariee Ami and spoke to Neillie Butler and her incredibly talented team of wedding planning experts. One of the first questions they asked was what we wanted in our wedding day. The answer was fairly vague. To be comfortable. To be relaxed. To have fun. And to embrace the beauty of the location. There’s no point trying to outdo something that is already transcendentally gorgeous. Also, no pink and no cactuses The rest, really, is history. Neillie and her team took it from there, asking our input along the way, and I surprised myself with how much I was looking forward to actually having a wedding. I even resisted the impulse to enjoy the experience, thinking “this is so cliche. This is something I’ve never thought I needed. This is what girlie girls do.” Which slowly morphed into “Look as those fabulous dahlias, I want to swim in them forever,” and “I never want to take this dress off,” and “Look at my family, they are having a blast,” and “Look at my new family, they can really boogie!” We were so comfortable in our skins, despite my wearing the heaviest dress I will ever wear in my life (but it swished down the aisle which was, thankfully, void of mud puddles) and Ken wearing a tux (He insisted, the formal goofball. I wanted him to wear slacks and a dress shirt. Maybe go barefoot, just to confuse people and validate ridiculous stereotypes about Alabama…but I will say this: the man is gorgeous in a tux). We were surrounded by family and friends who were ecstatic to be there and share the day with us. We danced like no one was watching (seriously, there’s photo evidence), and celebrated beneath a spectacular fireworks display that I still insist is better than any I’ve seen on the 4th of July, and coaxed friends having a little too much fun down from the stage they weren’t supposed to be standing on. We were in a place we loved, a place we were familiar with and which we knew we would spend countless more hours exploring and lounging with family in as the years of our marriage went on, a place that inspired awe in our out-of-town guests who didn’t know what to think about the fact that they were flying to Alabama to attend a wedding. There was even a cactus or three hidden in the exquisite arrangements put together by Buffy Hargett (aka Buffy the Flower Slayer), which were stunning. Looking back, I’m infinitely glad we didn’t elope. Our wedding was so many things, but if I had to distill it to just a few words they would be: fun, warm and JUST PLAIN US. Ann and Ken. And that’s really the heart of it. It was a perfect reflection of the way we’d like to live the rest of our lives together.
