Alabama Family Home Fall Wedding

Speaking as someone who loves to play hostess, I can’t imagine anything more romantic than attending a backyard wedding. Choosing a venue with personal history surrounded by lush trees and rolling hills, Tiffany Hughes captured a day bursting with bright arrangements by Buffy Hargett and it’s pure wedding perfection. Filled with a whole lot of heart this gallery is not to be missed!

From Mariee Ami Wedding Planning StudioWe love this bold color palette of vibrant oranges, purples, plums, and rich reds! This October bride had a clear vision of what she wanted her flowers to look like, and we are glad we didn’t make any changes! Set at a family members home in Cullman Alabama looking over gorgeous rolling hills and greenery, it was the perfect backdrop for this October bride! From The Bride…When Ken and I got engaged, all I really wanted to do was elope. I’ve never been what most people would define as “girlie,” and I can honestly say that, cross my heart, I really and truly never dreamed about my wedding day as a little girl. I did have a bride costume that I liked to wear with disturbing regularity, but I can’t say it was because I wanted to be a bride. I don’t think I understood the concept. Mostly, I liked the way the faux lace swished when I ran full-pelt through mud puddles. So when I miraculously met the man who somehow found my strange, goofy, abrasive, insistently non-comforming ways attractive, and he subsequently proposed 5 years later (will miracles never cease!?), the first thing I thought was “I wonder if we could get away with eloping and announcing we’re married via a Christmas card this year…” Obviously, the answer was no. For many reasons, including the fact that Ken didn’t want to and several family members would have cried. Regardless, I knew if we weren’t going to elope, which meant we were going to have a wedding, we had to do it right. And doing it right meant being comfortable, because otherwise the Bride would be grumpy, obstinate and generally unpleasant all day long. A wedding involves a party, and parties for grumpy people are no fun. When I think of comfort, I think of family and when it came to location, it really had to be my aunt and uncle’s gorgeous home in Hanceville, Alabama: Prospect Mountain. Aside from this location being, literally, a stunning white French chateau atop a mountain, surrounded by lush trees and looking over the rolling hills of central Alabama, it’s also a reflection of my family’s utter refusal to be relegated to a single definition. Inside this stunning masterpiece of a house, there’s elk heads on the wall. Also a water buffalo. The master bath, where my girls and I got ready day of the wedding, is a cavernous marble room with gleaming fixtures and mirrored surfaces. The master closet, connecting to the elegant bathroom, is literally bursting with various forms of camoflage hunting gear and mud covered boots. In a word, it was perfect. Confirming the location was the first step in determining the rest of the wedding details. And it was the last one we made by ourselves. We knew three things were certain about our wedding day. 1) We’d end the day married. 2) It would be at Prospect Mountain. 3) Everyone would have a blast because all the details would fall into place effortlessly. We were confident we could accomplish the first two items on our own. The third? Please. You might as well ask a five year old to produce a perfectly executed double back handspring. We went to Mariee Ami and spoke to Neillie Butler and her incredibly talented team of wedding planning experts. One of the first questions they asked was what we wanted in our wedding day. The answer was fairly vague. To be comfortable. To be relaxed. To have fun. And to embrace the beauty of the location. There’s no point trying to outdo something that is already transcendentally gorgeous. Also, no pink and no cactuses The rest, really, is history. Neillie and her team took it from there, asking our input along the way, and I surprised myself with how much I was looking forward to actually having a wedding. I even resisted the impulse to enjoy the experience, thinking “this is so cliche. This is something I’ve never thought I needed. This is what girlie girls do.” Which slowly morphed into “Look as those fabulous dahlias, I want to swim in them forever,” and “I never want to take this dress off,” and “Look at my family, they are having a blast,” and “Look at my new family, they can really boogie!” We were so comfortable in our skins, despite my wearing the heaviest dress I will ever wear in my life (but it swished down the aisle which was, thankfully, void of mud puddles) and Ken wearing a tux (He insisted, the formal goofball. I wanted him to wear slacks and a dress shirt. Maybe go barefoot, just to confuse people and validate ridiculous stereotypes about Alabama…but I will say this: the man is gorgeous in a tux). We were surrounded by family and friends who were ecstatic to be there and share the day with us. We danced like no one was watching (seriously, there’s photo evidence), and celebrated beneath a spectacular fireworks display that I still insist is better than any I’ve seen on the 4th of July, and coaxed friends having a little too much fun down from the stage they weren’t supposed to be standing on. We were in a place we loved, a place we were familiar with and which we knew we would spend countless more hours exploring and lounging with family in as the years of our marriage went on, a place that inspired awe in our out-of-town guests who didn’t know what to think about the fact that they were flying to Alabama to attend a wedding. There was even a cactus or three hidden in the exquisite arrangements put together by Buffy Hargett (aka Buffy the Flower Slayer), which were stunning. Looking back, I’m infinitely glad we didn’t elope. Our wedding was so many things, but if I had to distill it to just a few words they would be: fun, warm and JUST PLAIN US. Ann and Ken. And that’s really the heart of it. It was a perfect reflection of the way we’d like to live the rest of our lives together. What else is there to say beyond that?

Seaside Alabama Wedding at the Estuarium At The Dauphin Island Sea Lab

These stunning images from Jordan Brittley paint the prettiest picture of this couples’ absolutely priceless day. It’s the kind of wedding you’ll find yourself starring at for more time you care to admit, and that’s because it’s pure lovely from start to finish. You’ll want to wrap yourself up in every fabulous moment of this seaside soiree, and you can do just that here.

From Jordan BrittleyI wanted to send this Dauphin Island wedding your way since it is dripping with seaside beauty and a darling couple.

From The Bride…We had a wonderful time getting ready together! Brittany and Jessie helped me straighten my hair. And then after I had it pinned up Britt put in all of the flower pin hair accessories. Brittany then applied all of my makeup, so got to make lots of funny faces at her in the process. And Jessie was on hand with q-tips to fix all the smudges my mascara kept leaving on my face (gotta love long eyelashes!).

Its funny looking back because it’s all such a blur. I remember getting ready with my sisters the most and then waiting at the church. Everything else happened so fast I don’t think I can separate the memories out! The only other favorite/funny memory I have is when we were taking pictures and everyone had to help me move so my dress didn’t get dirty. At one point, I remember squatting down to grab the front of my dress while making a lovely face as I was trying to move when I looked up and caught my cousin taking a picture!

Advice to Future Brides: There is no such thing as too many lists!

The pictures are BY FAR my favorite keepsake from my wedding. I can look back on every moment and relive it, which was especially important to me as all of my family was not able to make the trip down for my wedding. Now I can share these memories with friends and family now and in the future.

From Ashley KelemenWhen planning a trip down South, I was able to team up with these incredible local vendors to pull together some true southern inspiration! I have always had a fascination with the culture and beautiful scenery in this part of the country, and dreamed of shooting some beautiful inspiration below the dripping spanish moss. Though the shoot was focused on bridal style, we had a lot of fun pulling together a little whiskey bar as an homage to the groom! The day of the shoot, we were hit with an unseasonable rainstorm, which added to the moodiness and drama of the scenery around us.

From Mary Me BridesWith this being Ashley’s very first time to Alabama we wanted to pull together a shoot that gave her the ultimate southern experience. Our inspiration came largely in part from the true southern charm that Alabama has to offer. Taking the classic southern aspects and adding a touch of elegance and a little wow factor we came up with the concept. We wanted to portray the natural beauty of Alabama while still bringing in the elegance we so love.

From White Rabbit StudiosThe afternoon in which Sonia and Matt tied the knot was a warm one for May, but that can be expected here in Alabama. The beautiful antebellum home, called Creekside Plantation, is situated right along Limestone Creek. The oak leaf hydrangeas were in full bloom, the birds were chirping, the bees were busy between buds, and every single person had a smile on their face! It was such a wondrous occasion to be a part of – a winning combination of magical and whimsical, carefree and blissful!

From the pops of color in the beautiful florals, to the stunning sunset ceremony, to the romantic newlyweds, to the fun with family and friends – this was a day to remember! Sonia and Matt were surrounded with joy as everyone came together to celebrate the love they have for each other! It was such an honor photographing their wedding and Sonia and Matt are wonderful subjects to capture! Their wedding was shot on Portra 400, which makes the colors absolutely sing!

Alabama Fall Orchard Wedding

When you sit down with this little autumn wedding, you’ll realize it’s exactly the pretty yet personal approach we preach here on SMP. Held at the Bride’s family peach orchard, it’s chock-full of meaningful moments – not to mention the Groom’s own home brew – and the kind of relaxed-yet-totally-chic day ANY guest would die to attend. Just Crumbs designed the cake, Mary Margaret Smith snapped the goodies and Southern Vibe put it all to film. Dive in here.

From the Bride… Matt and I have known each other pretty much all of our lives, growing up in the same town where our parents knew each other. I was three years younger than Matt in high school so we didn’t really connect until I graduated from college and he was finishing up his Bachelors Degree. One of my best friends (a bridesmaid) and one of his best friends (a groomsmen) got married a few years back so Matt and I were always the 3rd wheel (or 4th wheels?). We spent a lot of time together as friends for years – until the timing was perfect. I asked him on our 3rd date if he was going to marry me one day. He said yes.

I think it is safe to say that the most unique portion of our wedding day was the fact that I got to have my wedding in a location were no one else had been married, my family’s peach orchard. I had my wedding at home in my back yard where I grew up looking for arrowheads with my dad or fishing with my granddaddy. Matt got to get married at the local fruit stand that his mom took him to when he was a kid. The orchard consists of a pond surrounded by peach and apple trees. We had the ceremony in one set of peach rows, social hour/dancing around the pond, and dinner in another set of peach rows.

Everyone says “Don’t worry about the small details” well I say just the opposite – do worry about the small details! In the end it is all of those small details that come together to make your wedding unique. A lot of the details we decided on weren’t necessarily out of the box original, but we made them unique. We accomplished this by choosing details that were special not only to Matt and I but our families as well. For example, the guestbook on quilt squares has been done before, but my mom is actually going to be the one to put those squares together for us. This turns the guestbook quilt squares into a gift not only from our guest but from my mom as well. Another detail Matt and I were head over heels for were our table numbers, they were listed Table One – Table Twenty. But what made them special to us is that we took the time to sit down and go through song after song from all of our favorite artists and choose lyrics that remind us of each other to put on the table numbers.

One last thing I have to point out about my fairytale orchard wedding is that this wedding was not just about the bride and groom. This wedding was also about celebrating family and friends. Between Matt’s family and mine there haven’t been a lot of weddings. His parents/grandparents and my parents/grandparents all had court house weddings. No dresses or cakes, no suits or birdseed; this wedding was a chance for everyone to celebrate their marriage. And everyone treated it that way; we were surrounded by people doing things for Matt and I even when we didn’t ask. We had zero upsets the entire day. I found it relaxing and he had fun. The whole night was magical and romantic, it was so romantic. I think everyone there fell in love all over again. Matt and I were very blessed to be surrounded by such a wonderful group of people; we have families that feel like friends and friends that feel like family. You really could not ask for anything more. At the end of the night it was rewarding to hear our guests gush over and over about how perfect this wedding was. And they were right, it was perfect.

Romantic Alabama Wedding at the Hampton Cove Wedding Plantation

Any day we have a Simply Bloom wedding on the pages of SMP is a good day in my book, and it will only take on look at the pretty below to see why. Romantic, gorgeously captured and filled with heart-felt details – this gallery is basically my dream come true. See it all here.

From The Bride…Krzysztof and I met a few years ago and fell in love instantly. He took me to Poland to meet his parents two months after our meeting and from then on we just knew. It was funny because we actually went to the same high school at the same time but did not know each other then. It must have been fate. We got engaged on Christmas Eve when he got down on one knee in our little house’s foyer. While I was going to school for another degree I planned the wedding myself (my Korean background and analness would not allow for any delegation). Luckily we had a 1 1/2 year engagement.

Every since I was a little girl I loved the color pink (blush pink in particular) and I love the color with gold. This was basically my inspiration. I am an avid lover of thrift store shopping and bargain hunting. Pretty much everything for the wedding was found in a local thrift store. Vintage couches, anything brass or gold, and anything Victorian. I was going for a “Marie Antoinette in Alabama”.

We found the venue together and it was not like the usual Southern barns you see in weddings down South. It was fairly new and was set upon 23 acres of beautiful landscape. The ceremony took place at St. Mary’s of the Visitation Catholic Church where Krzysztof and I were member’s of. We had a full mass and included 7 groomsmen and 7 bridesmaids. The church was beautiful on it’s own so decor was unnecessary. Finery’s Traci Rush and I got together and I was able to explain to her my vision for the reception and she was able to set everything up according to my plan. We had a cigar bar out under the “hay barn” where there were two gorgeous vintage sitting areas and an electric violinist playing during cocktail hour. The DJ played much techno since that was our favorite genre of music. And our Polish and Korean families danced together.

The incredible cake that I sketched up was put together by Slice at a Time and was a showstopper….she made it look exactly like I envisioned. An almost 3′ tall fondant, almond cake surrounded by ruffles and gold touches. And of course what “french princess” wouldn’t have a delicious macaron tower to go along with it? We also included a tea and coffee station for after our plated dinner (on vintage mismatched china) that included a full course of Polish cuisine, we loved being able to see all of our family and bridal party at the head of a 48 foot long head table centered in the barn. Our lengthy reception of 6 hours ended with us walking between our wonderful friends and family lighting sparklers. The videographer, I Do Flix did a remarkable job capturing what all we missed and our lovely and talented photographer, Vania Morris from Simply Bloom Photography took some amazing shots. We could not have asked for a better wedding. I finally married my Polish Prince and lived happily ever after.

Rustic Chic Birmingham Wedding

Give me a good rustic, southern wedding, and you’ll have a blogger with a smile as wide as her screen. With the help of Mariee Ami, this Birmingham bride and groom designed the casual-yet-cool day of their dreams, and W&E Photographie didn’t miss a beat. Click right here for soooo much more.

From W&E Photographie… Sara Anne got ready along with her ‘maids in Birmingham’s most charming hotel, The Tutwiler. The Bride & Groom exchanged vows at the historic, european style Independent Presbyterian Church. Their reception was complete with a live jazz band, light up tamborines for the dance floor and tasty signature cocktails. The groom opted for a southern BBQ table in lieu of a groom’s cake. DIY details were in abundance throughout the stables, from the handmade shutters which displayed the couples childhood photos to the Alabama shaped puzzle which served as a fun, interactive guest book.

Summer Wedding Inspiration with Pewter Accents

Inspiration comes in all shapes and sizes but when it’s packaged up in the prettiest summer shoot you ever did see, we count our lucky stars for vendors like Elle AffairsSouthern Posies, Cakes By Kim and Spindle Photography. They know exactly how to get our hearts a’ racing, but the best news yet? This party is JUST getting started. Click right here for so much more.

From Spindle PhotographyEvent planner and stylist Brittany Lott of Elle Affairs dreamed up this romantic and feminine wedding inspiration shoot that is filled to the brim with gorgeous eye candy for spring and summer brides. While the color palette is pastel, the pink, purple and blue shades we picked for the long mix-and-match bridesmaid dresses are a little more moody than your typical Easter pinks and yellows. With pretty dusty blue details like the ink for the calligraphed paper suite, and pewter accents like the sparkly Kate Spade bride’s shoes, it was altogether dreamy!

The crazy-gorgeous florals were bursting with lush light pink and peach peonies, ranunculus, and Butterfly Blue scabiosa. The bride’s gown is a gorgeous Hayley Paige with flounced skirt and striking keyhole back adorned with a metallic crystal beading. Silver foil gave the light blue cake some subtle glam and were accompanied by Earl Grey macarons dusted with edible metallic powder that we quickly devoured at the end of the day.

The venue, Rucker Place, is a romantic and charming historic home with a wrap-around porch (with a painted dusty blue floor! Kismet!), and is the perfect setting for our fresh affair that a classic/romance-loving bride would adore.

Autumn Wedding With Shades of Gold

When I close my eyes and think of fall, this wedding is exactly what comes to mind. Crisp, autumn leaves, rich shades of gold and gatherings of loves ones in the great outdoors. The only thing that could top it, of course, is having Jonas Seaman by your side to capture every second. He snapped the whole gallery of wedding goodness you can’t afford to miss!

From the Bride… Geoff is from Cleveland and has always loved fall in the South. He just thinks it’s the prettiest time of year and it’s my favorite time of year, too. We knew we wanted our wedding to be in the fall and wanted an outside venue that would showcase the autumn colors. That was the first most certain thing. Everything grew from there as far as inspiration for the color palette and flowers.

Our families and friends helped pull everything together. My mom does flower design for a living so the ladies she works with did our bouquets using fall flowers and fall colors. My hairpiece was worn by Geoff’s grandmother when she got married. I had already picked my dress that had appliques of flowers. It was so cool when his mom happened to find the hairpiece and it had the same detailing.

As for the decor, I wanted it to feel antique inspired while still being comfortable. My mom works at an antiques store called Henhouse Antiques. They were really sweet to let us use little silver baskets for the flower girls and several antique tables. My family also provided the silver trays that we used to serve the appetizers and to present the programs.

The dining area was the most important element for us. We very much wanted to emphasize the coming together of all of our friends and family for a great meal. Geoff’s restaurant, El Barrio catered. I’d seen a picture of lights swooping down from a gable of a roof and thought that would enclose the outdoor dining space perfectly. We also used flowers overhead to fill the space. One of our friends from the antique store beautifully hand wrote the seating chart on a couple hanging flags. We did a mix of different silver vases and candlesticks for the table decor. I liked the wood feel of the tables and I wanted to add a little something without covering them entirely. Deep turquoise is my favorite color so we bought linen and cut it into runners.

Overall I wanted our day to feel elegant but without crossing the fine line into being stuffy or formal. I wanted people to feel like they were coming to play with us and enjoy the day.

Modern Stone Bridge Farm Wedding

You wouldn’t normally think of an Alabama wedding day in a brisk, 30 degree wintry setting. But I assure you, this sweet soiree from Simple Color is as warm as they come. Pashmina wraps for the ‘maids, handmade wool ties, a glowing ceremony and reception at Stone Bridge Farm… it’s a gallery you’ll want to cozy up to any time of year!

Modern

From the beautiful Bride… I married my sweet husband on the most perfect winter day in Cullman, Alabama at Stone Bridge Farm. While it was a chilly 30 degrees on our wedding day, the warmth of our friends and family (and lots of dancing!) kept us from freezing! My inspiration for the wedding was all things cozy and elegant. I also wanted to tie in Christmas elements without overdoing the holiday theme. When thinking about bridesmaid dress colors, I wanted to avoid red or green, so I chose a neutral palette. I gave my bridesmaids some dress options and allowed them to pick their own dresses. I wanted them to feel comfortable and beautiful! I also gave them cream pashminas and robes to help them stay warm throughout the day. My dress from the Anne Barge Blue Willow collection was made of a swiss dot material that I instantly fell in love with. The soft, unique material complemented the theme of the wedding.

The ceremony was held at the gorgeous wooden chapel at Stone Bridge Farm. Christmas trees and cypress adorned the chapel, bringing in just the right amount of Christmas touches. The wooden pews and candles in the windows added to the coziness! Soft Christmas music was played by the pianist and violinist as guests were seated. My pastor married us with the sweetest personal stories about Tyler and me in the sermon.

The reception was held next door in their beautiful reception hall. Everything about the reception gave off a warm, cozy feel. My husband, Tyler, was a former mascot at Auburn University, so naturally, Aubie the Tiger had to make an appearance at our reception. Also, the groom’s cake featured Aubie sitting on top of the Auburn University sign, a well-known monument in the Auburn community. We all danced the night away to the fantastic music of Az Izz…who danced just as much as we all did!

My favorite things about our wedding were the personal touches scattered throughout the day. Tyler’s super talented mom made the groomsmen’s bow ties out of grey wool. Also, his cousin actually made the awesome Aubie cake! My best friend, and Matron of Honor, sketched all of the pictures for the wedding program, and my talented husband designed the program himself. The pianist that played during the ceremony also played in my parents’ wedding. All of these personal touches made our day even more special. Instead of looking back and seeing a cold, winter day in Alabama, we’re filled with warm memories of our family and friends surrounding us on the best day of our lives.

Intimate Backyard Wedding

This is one of those weddings where mere words simply can not do it justice.  Because no matter how much I tell you just how beautiful every.last.detail planned by Mariee Ami is, it still won’t compare to the real thing: an intimate backyard affair that is sooo insanely gorgeous and heartwarming, it’s literally the epitome of a perfect wedding.  See it all captured by Jamie Clayton right here.

From the Bride… John and I were wed in a small ceremony overlooking the creek at my parents’ house on September 21st. Luckily enough, the downpour of rain had finally stopped about two hours before our guests arrived. Upon arrival, our friends and family were greeted with a glass of champagne and the violinist’s music. Soon, the ceremony commenced with my sister leading the way and my father escorting me. Shortly after the ceremony, John and I escaped to a dinner date downtown at Chez FonFon – one of our favorite restaurants in Birmingham. After a quick dinner, we headed back to my parents’ house to celebrate with all of our friends and family.

We had so many amazing people help make our wedding. Not only did my parents host our wedding at their home, but they also significantly aided in the planning. My mom also designed our wedding invitations and save the dates, while my father brewed beer and harvested honey as gifts for our traveling guests. My sister hand-addressed all of our invitations. Her boyfriend and one of our family friends read passages we selected for our ceremony. Together, we all set up last-minute rain tents and hastily covered the outdoor arrangements to protect them from the coming storm. One of my aunts planned and executed the the decorations, while another aunt ordered and created the flower arrangements. The band was full of John’s former bandmates and family friends. Finally, branches from my parents’ anniversary olive tree decorated our wedding cake.

Despite the rain, our day could not have been more perfect for us. We wanted an intimate, outdoor ceremony where we could relax and enjoy ourselves and the time we had together with our family and friends. At the same time, we wanted to ensure we had time for us to savor the moment and celebrate with our guests. Overall, we wanted to have fun – dancing, singing, sabering champagne, and playing with sparklers – and we got just that!

Purple Southern Wedding with Persian Flare

When Persian meets the South it’s bound to be a charming, beautiful thing, and all expectations have been blown out of the water courtesy of this stunning soiree from Glass Jar Photography. The hues of purple are making my heart race, but that ceremony venue has straight up stolen it right out of my chest!

From Glass Jar Photography… Amanda is Persian, but grew up in Alabama, met Ben (from Cullman, AL) then they moved to Chicago, now LA…So, they wanted to throw a wedding party that mixed her heritage with his, and their shared southern roots into a beautiful and fun wedding on the mountain.

The colors were a mix of purple, red and black, and at the reception they had belly dancer’s, fire breathers and all kinda of cutely named southern drinks, etc…they even had a cereal bar for later in the night!

What to Look for When Buying Flowers

We’ve talked a lot of flower shop on SMP.  Because we think flowers have the ability to totally transform not only your space – but your soul. And amidst tips on arranging flowers to those on making grocery store stock feel special, it’s time now to hear from Holly & Mandy‘s on what to look for when buying flowers. So that all of our fresh flowers look gorg and make everyone around them smile.

THE PALETTE:  I like to pick out my favorite flower first and then use that as my palette inspiration. From there I choose others that are in a similar color family and compliment well. Contrasting colors can be nice, but I think it’s simplest to begin by working tone on tone.

FRESHNESS: This is so key in making your flowers last longer. Always try to choose the freshest looking flowers at the market. Stay away from any browning, wilting petals or anything that just looks a little tired. When you get home immediately clip 1-2 inches off of the stems at an angle and place your flowers in clean containers full of fresh water. If possible let them drink for at least an hour before arranging them.

TEXTURE: I think it is ideal to have some nice textural variation in your arrangement or bouquet. I love ruffley flowers like the ranunculus and peonies in the photos. That said, I think ruffles stand out even more when accented by a contrasting texture – for example I wired a little pine cone into this bouquet to mix things up a bit. Using mixed greenery is another way to layer in various textures.

FORAGE: Remember that every ingredient in your arrangement does not have to be bought at a flower shop. Clipping greenery from around your neighborhood is a great way to have your finished piece reflect your natural environment. It brings the outside it. I always incorporate some greenery, vines or branches from my yard.

LOOSEN UP: I feel like this is as important for us as it is for the flowers. Just remember to relax and leave the perfectionism at the door when you start playing with your flowers. There is no perfect technique so let the beauty of the flowers speak for themselves. When you arrange, keep it loose and flowing – it’s more fun for you and each flower will stand out more that way!

Halekai III House Wedding

I’m a big believer that intimate weddings are the way to go. And after the loss of the groom’s father during the wedding planning process, this sweet couple decided on the same. They brought on Orange Beach Weddings to bring their family-focused vision to life and Christopher Nolan didn’t miss a beat.  It’s a small beach affair with a whole lot of heart, and you can swoon through it all right over here.

From the Bride… Ross and I started dating in 2006, got engaged two years ago and jumped right into planning our large, beautiful, formal wedding. Unlike many, I had not been planning my wedding since a little girl – I played house and dreamt more about my future husband. Of course, with the introduction of Pinterest, that certainly changed, and I was overwhelmed with the possibilities.

Our wedding was a dream, but along the way decisions began to feel forced, and it started to feel like someone else’s dream. After all, we’d originally wanted a destination wedding on the beach but, at the time, it just wasn’t in the cards. So when we started planning our first wedding I’d often find myself saying, “I wish I could give this beautiful, half planned wedding to someone else.”

We had an awesome wedding planner—Jessica Kersey at Finishing Touch Designs—and she was wonderful to work with. She took care of everything from handling vendors to helping us come up with a great menu to finding the best tasting cake! To each his own when it comes to getting a wedding planner or not, but we certainly could not have managed the beginning of this process without her.

About six months into wedding planning, Ross’s dad went into the hospital with liver failure and he did not come back home. During that time, planning our wedding was torturous: It wasn’t fun; decisions were laborious; and we felt our focus wasn’t in the right place. So we decided to postpone until Ross’s dad’s health was in a better state. Unfortunately, that day never came and he passed away on March 10th, 2012. Our large wedding party, close friends, and family were very understanding throughout it all and we could not have asked for more support.

A few months after his passing, Ross and I were ready to start planning again, but this time our priorities had changed. We wanted small, intimate, much more casual, and to get married in a family vacation destination that meant something, that meant a lot, to our family, the beaches of Gulf Shores, AL. Once that was decided, we hired Gulf Shores local wedding planner Jessica Wright at Orange Beach Weddings to handle everything and she more than delivered.

The inspiration for our wedding stemmed from the merging of three areas: Our original color palette of navy blue, ivory, and fresh green; the laid back vibe of our favorite beach; and the goal for our photos to not look dated in years to come.  Finding the stunning pale blue and white Halekai III beach house was the ideal start to the planning process. We knew it was the perfect place to host our large families for a week of relaxing and celebrating, as well as a fantastic backdrop for the ceremony and reception on its private beach.  Along with the original color palette and flowers (peonies, succulents, and hydrangeas), we were able to add in a nautical vibe with large lanterns, bistro lights, and driftwood as well as navy blue stripes on some décor. Along with Jessica, Etsy and Hobby Lobby were integral in pulling it all together.

I couldn’t begin to put a finger on my favorite detail of the wedding. I absolutely loved how everything came together (including the indescribably perfect, God-sent weather!). The large chalkboard program allowed us to honor our former wedding party and our loved ones who couldn’t be with us. I loved my dress and the guys looked stunning in their tan suits and navy ties. The food, especially the pancetta mac & cheese and truffle oil deviled eggs, was outstanding—guests were dragging leftovers out of the fridge late that night.

There were so many sweet, wonderful moments throughout the day, too: getting ready with my sister; my dad, happy and reluctant, responding “her mother says I have to” when asked who gives me away; and struggling to put Ross’s ring on the wrong hand and then trying not to laugh too loud. But I think my favorite is Ross singing along to the entirety of Vanilla Ice’s “Ice, Ice Baby” and not missing a word. I love that guy.

On top of all of the perfect details, what made the entire week so special was our family and friends being there to celebrate with us. We got to spend days lounging on the beach, celebrating two family birthdays, eating some great seafood, and all with those closest to us. A few special people, some still with us and some not, could not make the trip, but we are reassured in their support and are so grateful for those who could be there. We got to hear some hilarious and heartfelt toasts; Ross’s Uncle Ron was able to perform our ceremony; cousin Lilly hula-hooped to “Baby Got Back”; and we danced the night away with our best friends. It absolutely made our wedding what we wanted it to be – a friends and family affair.

From Simple Color… Lindsay and Will’s wedding was a perfect mix of rustic charm and southern elegance. Thanks to the ridiculously talented team at M. Elizabeth Events … along with an all-star lineup of wedding vendors … we were treated to one of the most beautifully detail-oriented events we’ve photographed in awhile. Everywhere you turned, there was something lovely to photograph, from the moment we started shooting with Lindsay and Will while they got ready … to the last kiss in the back of her grandfather’s 1944 pickup truck as they drove off into the night. The ceremony was held under a gigantic oak tree in the middle of a field at Russell Crossroads … with a stunning evening reception to follow at the Stables!
